Maps have been around for centuries, it is hard to image how our forefathers were able to so accurate depict the world with the limitations they face. Babylonian clay tablets are the earliest surviving signs of any maps made. These showed the world as flat; because no one knows for sure when or where the first map was drawn the Babylonian depiction hold the honor as the world's first map. This map was found in 1930 in present day Iraq.

While we can trace the history of maps to ancient times, the history of aerial maps is much shorter. The discipline came about only after the advent of photography and flying. The first aerial maps were photographs taken from hot air balloons in the mid 1800s. The first record aerial photograph was taken over France in 1858 by Nader (Gasper Felix Tournachon). He took a picture of a French village, Petit-Bectre from a hot air balloon. This picture showed the houses in the village; he followed this feat with another depicting Paris in 1868. Unfortunately these aerial maps no longer exist, but James Wallace Black's aerial shot of Boston in 1860 is still in existence today.

By 1906, the full range of what could be done with a camera in mid-air was being realized. Photographer George Lawrence captured the aftermath of the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 using a number of kites equipped with cameras. This showed the use of aerial photographs as a map to identify what destruction was done to the area. The first such picture using an airplane was done by Wilber Wright, of the Wright brothers, in 1909.

Today many aerial maps are available from Microsoft TerraServer, which includes thousands of spy maps from the Cold War era. These are a great addition to the developing knowledgebase on the history of aerial maps. <bio>Visit http://www.aerial-maps.info and read more of Jamie's articles. </bio>

The antique collector has many items he can treasure and appreciate, there are many different antiques and collectables that are uniquely favorites of different collectors niches. One such very special niche is the antique map collectors, a group that is interested not only in the item and its antiquity but also in many other fields such as history, military and cartography through the ages.

Maps have been the main tool with which the world has been discovered and colonized, starting as a unique craft in the ancient world map making had a combination of the skills in arts and painting as well as the ability to correctly describe a landscape for navigation and trip planning. This art of map making had evolved even further when navel history started making its mark on the exploration of the world and its new frontiers.

One reason why antique maps are so special and unique is their close connection with specific events, when an antique map is well traced and you can estimate who was the owner and on what general purpose it was used, it is only a question of research that will lead you to the owners personal history and with it you will also probably know more about the maps history as well. It is sometimes an amazing travel in time to find an owner of a map and than trace his activity with that map over a period of a few years.

The map collector will be interested not only in the historic value of the map but also in the quality of the map making, as some maps from earlier time can clearly show a less developed skill in map making the map can also be used to point to a certain point in cartography history and development. In some cases the collector will be also interested in the overall quality of the map as it will be used on display in a living room or other place, in these cases the historic value is not so much a consideration.

Antique maps are also an item many institutes and businesses look for as an art like item to fit on their walls or offices, these antique maps usually have some kind of relevance to the business or establishment in which they are placed, and demonstrate some kind of connection between the company and its past or geographic roots. Some antique maps are especially wanted in businesses and industries which involve travel like world transport and delivery services.

In any case the market for antique maps is a very busy one with a lot of new buyers entering the market every year, the excitement of antique map searching and the connection to naval and military history as well as the development of the craft and art of map making make this a unique niche in antiques and historic item collecting, even the most experienced art or antique collector will always be interested in learning more about antique maps. <bio>Simon Oldmann has been experimenting with internet auction sites for some years now, he is writing about his experience in researching and buying Antiques online, Simon writes articles about Antique Maps at http://antiques.zupatips.com </bio>

Several General Positioning System (GPS) maps are already provided with your GPS device when you buy it. Because these maps are offered for free, there is an overhead in getting them. Indeed, these maps do not allow any tweaking in order to meet your specific needs. Another drawback of these built-in maps is their lack of knowledge about your given destination. For instance, let assume you want to travel to Philippines; it is obvious that you will appreciate details about this location beforehand. If your device was purchased in Brazil, you will be very lucky if it has any knowledge about Philippines. Therefore this GPS map cannot act as a travel aid.

Many GPS devices are used as travelling guides for a trip. Therefore GPS devices have superseded our old map artifacts. You may be wondering how useful a GPS device is. It is obvious that having detailed information about your trip in advanced will only make it more enjoyable, faster, safer and reduce any risks during your trip.

Although there are several programs that can be purchased to install new GPS maps on your device, there are also several free programs that can be used for the same purpose. In order to use these, some software prerequisites should be installed at first. These include the cables of your device. You do not to worry about it because they are included with your device when you purchase it.

They are also many websites that can help you to design our own GPS maps. By customizing your maps, you will be able to pinpoint specific locations you are fond of. These include restaurants, bars, night clubs, schools and so forth. You may add traffic reports in your GPS maps in order to avoid traffic jam during your journey.

Another outstanding benefit of GPS systems is their ability to record several maps. For instance, if you are traveling a lot to the same place, your GPS device can save all your personal information once so that the trip you will not be asked to enter your personal details and preferences.

When you have a GPS system, you may find it easier to have many maps about your trips. This will make your trip very enjoyable. You should therefore spend some time looking at pre-installed maps as well as other amazing features of your system.

Briefly speaking, GPS maps offer you the unique opportunity you explore your final destination without heading there. This is very interesting because it is sometimes recommended to glance at a country before formally deciding to go there. Some GPS maps provide outstanding features such as an unlimited online access to view, print, save aerial pictures. Some of them also come with bunch of programs allowing you to personalize them, add texts, graphics, compute GPS coordinates, upload your GPS coordinates and plot them atop of your maps. Updating new GPS maps to your device can be a very daunting experience. There are available in many shopping centers not for free. If you are looking for free stuff, you should definitely look on the internet as several, interesting maps are available.<bio>Learn more on what is gps used for today and all the nuances of gps for car tracking wireless when you visit http://www.gpsportabletracking.com, the internet premier GPS auto tracking portal</bio>

Anthropomorphism is the attribution of appearance and qualities of human beings to animals and inanimate. It is very common in all world civilizations as a mean of expressing ideas. All religions use this principle at daily level.

The developments in computer and robotic technology create a bigger need of it for optimizing the connection between man and machine.

The huge popularity of Anthropomorphism is because the human body is a major focus of attention concerning health, nutrition and nurturing. The human body is a microcosm where the big outer world is reflected.

Historic collaboration exists between Medicine men and artists for illustrating Anatomy by advanced graphic and contemporary art styles. This is done even by sacrificing the pure scientific description.

In the arts there is a great freedom of creativity. Every work of art which combines man with landscape is both a unique description of the human body and anthropomorphization of the landscape. The artistic spirit unites between the two. The development of new art styles allows bolder representations of this proclaimed relationship.

Geographic maps are a very influential medium for delivering culture dependant messages. Antique maps represented the visual essence of their creators' world view.

Although modern map making utilizes sophisticated measurement instruments, it is still under the influence of aesthetic design. Even accurate maps are forced to represent interpretive and tendentious view points.

The earliest anthropomorphic maps were the constellations and zodiac maps which are associated with the universe.

Later on subjective world maps of early Christianity were created. Anthropomorphic maps of continents and single countries evolved gradually from them. From the 17th to the 19th century Atlases of this genre were very popular.

Anthropomorphic maps are developed occasionally into caricatures in the Media. The state of Israel is described frequently as a ridiculous anthropomorphic image by the Arab media.

The Land of Israel, although a favored cartographic subject, never had its proper anthropomorphic map. The Holy land Map as a Human Shape can fill the empty space in this field. <bio>Avinoam Amizan is the creator of The Human Map of the Holy Land at: http://www.holylandmap.net/main5.htm. Cadastre refers to ownership boundaries and often includes the tenure, precise location, ownership, value, and dimensions of specific parcels of land.

Drawn to a variety of scales, parcel maps can be simple and general in design or very precise and detailed. The most simple of map designs will show a very basic schematic representation or layout of the basic land cadastre, whereas the most complex will include a finely detailed representation.

Since most parcel maps are drawn up at the local level, the standards used for their development vary widely. Hence, the existence of a disparate group of depictions for parcel maps. In fact, the purpose for each parcel map often determines the manner in which it will be drawn up. Some of the reasons motivating the drawing up of parcel maps include the movement of natural boundaries that have been used for boundary identification, administrative boundaries, the depiction of varying levels of interest in the parcel, and the attempt to show more than one parcel under the same ownership.

Parcel maps are generally related in some way to the document containing the legal description of the land. These documents include the information that makes up the record for describing the boundary ownership for given parcels of land. The line work and text on the parcel map can include subdivision name, right-of-way identification, lot lines, lot dimensions, page references, and parcel acreage. The purpose of parcel maps extends beyond the indication of ownership when they include positional accuracy, cultural information, and physical details.

Parcel maps often include the identification numbers to the land, the parcel dimensions, and streets and the street names. All of the shown information is typically used to locate and identify property. Parcel identification numbers are given to specific parcels to aid in their recognition. They are often used on tax assessment maps as well.

The existence of parcel maps in the private sector can be useful to appraisers, attorneys, engineers, surveyors, and corporations. Parcel maps have been developed at a variety of governmental levels as well as in the private sector. The existence of parcel maps can ease the governmental burden of zoning, site development, administrative tasks, the design of roadways, the construction of public works, and the control of lake and stream erosion. Tax parcel maps are one of the most common. This type of parcel map is typically used for describing properties that are linked by tax bills, ownership, or assessment. <bio>For more information about Parcel Maps visit http://www.docedge.com The nation's #1 Online Public Land Records Provider. </bio>

Traveling in Wisconsin without a map can be a task. But with technologies available today, it should actually be a breeze. Maps of Wisconsin are readily available and when combined with GPS technology you should never get lost. Using car navigation systems allows users to have up to date Wisconsin maps loaded and ready for use. If you know the address of the location you are looking for, then entering this in the GPS will take you directly to your final destination. Most GPS units will take you in two ways, either shortest route or shortest time. A map of Wisconsin will not show you traffic jams, but the latest GPS systems can. So sometimes the shortest time actually is not, unless you are equipped with the traffic alerts available on a variety of GPS units. Some will also show work zone areas, again to help avoid those pesky things that increase your travel time.

POIs (Points of Interest) in Wisconsin will also be available on most maps downloaded to your GPS. These will include places such as museums, WI state parks, theaters, art and culture spots, restaurants, and even gas stations. If you have a list of addresses, you can enter these in the GPS as custom POIs to help you navigate to places in Wisconsin. Once you start your trip, the GPS will calculate your route and show your locations on a map. Some units will also give more detailed information like estimated time of arrival (ETA), moving time, stopped time, and speed.

Maps of Wisconsin lakes are also available for download to many units, but there are some GPS units that are specific for boating and lake navigation. These units can show you your location on the lake and depth information throughout. Maps on the GPS unit can also show items such as fish attractors, hazards, and boat ramps. This information is handy for the avid WI fisherman. A map can help find the "big one" when a experienced angler gets their hands on it.

Handheld GPS units with Wisconsin maps loaded on them can also be beneficial to the hiker and hunter. Today's technology lets you pack a large amount of data in to a small space. Many trail maps are available for download and can be added to a GPS unit for a great day of hiking. Also, you can mark your map with waypoints for hunting if you have a particular favorite spot.
People have always been curious about the world around them and the development of maps has echoed this historical fascination. Maps were once considered to be valuable objects and were treasured by their owners and regarded as works of art in their own right. These objects attracted the attention of artists as well as skilled draughtsmen and maps became quite ornate and decorative items, capturing the imagination of those who wondered what lay beyond the horizon.

Early maps tended to reflect what people knew or remembered and were largely topographical in nature. Often, these early pieces depicted myth and lore, combining to create "living maps" that were passed form generation to generation. Formalising the topography into early maps, knowledge became standardised and sowed the foundation of early cartography.

By the Middle Ages cartography had slowed in that accuracy became replaced by religious depiction through maps. Examples of strong belief can be seen in some maps where the Holy Land is shown to be at the centre of the earth. Another example is Europa Regina by Johannes Bucius which shows an early and elongated map, depicting Europe as the Queen of the World.

The Age of Seafaring during the 16th and 17th centuries saw new interest in map making, particularly the British and the Dutch taking to the seas and exploring new lands. At this time maps became increasingly artistic. An East Indies map in tropical colouring with pineapple trees and other exotic flora and fauna, designed to capture the imagination and evoke the scent of spice in the air is a typical example. As the demand for cartographers grew in the 17th century the artistic nature of maps from a purely functional item to a work of art began to evolve.

Maps were often decorated elaborately with sea creatures or mythical characters. Many of these very accomplished draughtsmen created quite unique works of art from map making. Maps designed by Petrus Plancius (1552-1622) or Abraham Ortelius (1528-1598) were frequently found embellished with intricate pictorial content. A successor to Abraham Ortelius was the Dutch cartographer Jan Baptist Vrients (1552-1612) who designed Obis Terrae Compendosia. The world is split into two hemispheres and surrounded by ornate and detailed pictorial decoration. The map brings a perception of how the world looks and a plethora of exotic creatures and landscapes from the far flung shores of the globe.

Another famous example is Nova Totius Terrarum, designed by Henricus Hondius (1597-1622), a Dutch Cartographer. This 17th century map is an ornate depiction of the world and is surrounded by detailed nautical scenes, perhaps reflecting the age and drama of exploration by sea as mythical creatures rise from the ocean and men are seen contemplating their journey.

Antique maps are increasingly popular in the modern home and make elaborate tapestries in home décor. There are a number of ways in which an antique map can add charm and elegance to the home, whether in poster, print or tapestry format and are much appreciated by connoisseurs of good taste.

Copyright © The Tapestry House, all rights reserved.<bio>Angela Dawson-Field writes extensively on art, history and tapestries and tapestry art.
A lightweight and handheld General Positioning Satellite (GPS) device with the highest number of GPS maps installed is always helpful. Ideally, all these maps should be as accurate as possible with the most detailed information available for your trips so that it will become your perfect travel companion. Having several GPS maps in your handheld is a very good idea because of the increased capacity of storing all your journeys as well as tracking your vehicle during your trip.

A lightweight handheld GPS device usually has several built-in maps which are not customized to meet your specific needs. In order to fully enjoy a trip, having detailed information about your trip beforehand is a huge boon as it can avoid you getting lost and have a very unpleasant experience. For instance, you may wish to travel to a new place destination that is not covered in default built-in maps.

GPS maps for portable GPS devices are available at many repositories. You first stop should be the Internet where you can download a lot of free GPS maps ready to be installed in your handheld GPS device. Just looking at search engines like Google will return a lot of maps ready to be downloaded for free with a variety of destinations.

Traditional mounted GPS and handheld GPS equipments make use of the same maps although their size is different because of the actual size of their respective monitors. These maps are very well detailed for traditional browsing systems and also provide specific information in order to guide you through your trip. Hikers can find this information very handy as they may get lost in a forest.

Finally, having many GPS maps in your handheld can be a huge boon as we saw in previous sections. The first reason of this is the detailed information and news about your routes for your trips so that there is less possibility to get lost. GPS maps mobile units are used for several purposes especially in aviation. This technology has opened up a world of accurate navigation to every pilot.
Maps provide the visual representation of the area. There are different types of maps that are meant for different purposes. Learning their type would help you analyze which map is used for certain situations.

A Visual representation of an area is a map. It shows relationships between elements of the space such as:

-objects
-religions and
-themes

A map is a:

-stationary two-dimensional,
-Geometrically precise representation of three-dimensional space.

Maps may represent any space, real or imagined, without considering the context or scale.

Examples:

-Brain mapping
-DNA mapping
-Extraterrestrial Mapping

Geographic maps are celestial maps from the 17th century. This was made by the Dutch cartographer Frederick de Wit.

Cartography (mapmaking) is the study and practice of crafting representations of the Earth upon a flat surface. A Cartographer is the person who makes maps.

Road maps form a subset of navigational maps. It includes the following:

•aeronautical maps
•nautical charts
•railroad network maps and
•hiking and biking maps

For quantity, the largest number of drawn map sheets is made up of local surveys carried out by:

•municipalities
•utilities
•tax assessors
•emergency services providers and
•other local agencies

ORIENTATION of MAPS

The relationship between directions on a map and compass is called ORIENTATION. Orient comes from the word "oriens" which means "east". The T and O maps, during the Middle Ages, were drawn with the east at the top portion. Now, the common cartographic convention is that the North is at the top of the map.

Maps that are not oriented to the north are:

-Reversed Maps

These are also called the Upside-Down maps or South-Up maps. These maps generally show Australia and New Zealand at the upper part of the map instead of being at the bottom.

-Polar Maps

These include the map of the Arctic or Antarctic regions. These maps are traditionally centered on the pole. The north direction is away from the center of the map.

-Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion Maps

These maps are based on the projection of the sphere of the Earth onto an icosahedron. The triangular pieces may be arranged in any order.

-Maps from Non-Western traditions.

These maps are oriented in different ways. The old map of Edo has the Japanese Imperial Palace at the top and at the center portion. The labels are oriented in a way that you cannot read them correctly. You can read it only if you put the Imperial Palace above your head.

-

The Medieval European T and O Maps

One example of this type of map is the Hereford Mappa Mundi. It is centered on Jerusalem with the east at the upper part. Before the reintroduction of Ptolemy's Geography to Europe in the year 1400, there was not even a single meeting in the West. Portolan charts are oriented to the shores that they are described in.

-Route and Channel Maps

These maps are traditionally oriented to the road or channel they dare described in.

-Maps used in the Society for Creative Anachronism

These maps show the west at the upper part portion. This is made in honor of the Society starting in California.

SCALE AND ACCURACY

There are lots of maps but not all are drawn onto a scale. This is expressed as a type of ratio like 1:10,000, which means that 1 out of any unit of measurement on the map, is equivalent to 10,000 of that same unit in reality.

This allows the reader to calculate the sizes of and distances between depicted objects. A bigger scale can give out a more detailed and accurate estimate. This means that it requires a larger map in order to explain the same area. Those highly detailed maps are now often printed on books or computer software.

The printed version includes:

-Broad Index
-Tables of distances between cities and
-even a Cross Reference of important destinations

Computer software-based maps provide several tools in order to help the user. It includes:

-User adjustable scale or zoom and
-Customized Search Engines

Large maps are also presented before as scrolls. Tabula Peutingeriana is an example of this. This is a hand-made copy that was rediscovered only recently.

USGS Topographic Maps or Topos is a type of modern printed map designed for hikers. It is scaled at the ratio of about 1:25,000. On the other hand, maps designed for motorists display major highways that are scaled at 1:250,000 or 1:1,000,000.

Thus, an accurately made map may either show its scale or it can declare that it is not scaled. This can not be reliably used in order to assume distances.<bio>For more information on Road Maps please visit our website.</bio>

You're in a foreign country that you have never visited before and you're in a rental car. This is the perfect combination to get you lost. You have several elements working against you. Those elements are: You're in a car that is unfamiliar to you, the steering wheel is probably on the opposite side of what you're used to, and you are not familiar with the area. That is why you need to do everything you can to keep yourself from getting lost. By not getting lost, you are able to get to your destinations faster and enjoy your trip instead of being frustrated all of the time.

Things to do before the trip

Before you leave to go to a foreign country, make sure you familiarize yourself with the spoken language. Make sure you recognize it in writing as well. It is ideal that you acquire maps of the places you're going to visit in your own language so that you understand what the maps are telling you. If you don't and you acquire the maps in the country you are visiting, you may be able to acquire maps in your own language. If they are not available, that is another reason for you to familiarize yourself with the language so that you can read the maps.

Try to arrange a group tour. See if there are any tours going on in which you can travel in groups. That way you have some kind of guide on your trip while enjoying the tour and you don't have to worry about getting lost unless you get separated. The odds of you getting separated is very slim, so hooking up with a tour guide and going on some sort of tour can really be quite the treat and you don't have to worry about losing your way.

Once you're there

Many cellular phones nowadays have built-in GPS systems. Many of these phones can also be used in foreign countries because they are designed to work on the different bands that exist around the world. If you have a phone with a built-in GPS system and it is called a 'world phone,' then you can use the GPS system on your phone to help you navigate around a foreign country in your rental car. This is stress-free travel at its finest.

However, for those who do not have world phones, there is another option. There are cellular phone rental booths at airports that allow you to rent these phones. If your phone has a SIM card, all you have to do is insert your SIM card into the phone and all of your activity is billed to your cellular phone account. In the meantime, you are able to utilize the GPS feature and make phone calls to your loved ones back home.

You also want to acquire a map when you get there anyway. Even if you acquired a copy in your own language, you want to compare the maps since some things change. You don't want to miss anything, so this is definitely an ideal task. Even if you didn't hook up with tour guides before you left, you can learn about tours and find out what types of tours are taking place within the country. That way you can become a part of these tours and know exactly where you are going. No matter which way you do it, you can enjoy your trip to a foreign country and drive around the way you want to so that you can enjoy your freedom.<bio>Car hire Sydney has rental car classes including large corporate car hire, truck hire and more.
We have always tried to make sense of the world around us and it is this drive to understand and document our environment has given rise to one of arts' least appreciated gems - antique maps and cartography.

Although today we are used to maps as dry, functional things that we occasionally reach for when lost, it was only a few centuries ago that they commanded the attention and wonder normally reserved for great works of art.

History of Cartography

The earliest maps date back to ancient Greece and the works of the Greek astronomer Ptolemy from the 2nd century are still referred to now as superb examples of the rise of early cartography.

Map making in Europe declined during the Medieval era as leading philosophers concentrated more on religion and spiritual matters than the practicalities of geography. However with the rise of European navies in the 16th and 17th centuries all this changed with cartography attracting not only the best geographers and astronomers, but also attracting the attention of many skilled draftsmen and artists.

During this time cartography took on new importance with many commercially produced maps being considered valuable works of art as well as useful tools for maritime travellers.

Art and Science Combined

The leading lights of this era produced some of the most memorable and distinct maps of any time, before or since. Since maps had to be sold many of the decorative embellishments were designed to attract buyers and make each map maker distinct from rivals.

As well as accurate map detail many maps from this time used decorative elements, such as sea monsters, mythical creatures and cartouches to help elevate the works from useful tools to works of art. It is this embellishment that makes them so attractive to art lovers today, as we are used to maps as dry objects.

World Map Tapestries

Given the recent rise in interest in textiles in the home it is no surprise some of cartographies best examples are now reproduced as wall tapestries. The distinct weave of high quality tapestries expertly captures the detail, drama and artistry of antique maps dating from the 16th and 17th centuries -- adding a striking dimension to art that already impresses.

One of the most famous examples is Typus orbis terrarum by Abraham Ortelius (1527 - 1598). It covers the known world at the time, and is a testament not only to the craftsmanship of cartographers but it demonstrates an impressive level of knowledge for its day. As a wall tapestry Typus orbis terrarum cleverly combines the expansive detail of the original map with the depth found in textile design making for a striking work of art.

One of the most famous maps ever produced was Jan Baptist Vrient's Obis Terrae Compendiosa, meaning "A Brief Representation of the World". It contains an astonishing amount of detail matched only by the breadth of its knowledge. Like earlier maps that it was based on it is decorated with numerous details including symbolic figures at each corner, exotic animals and fauna from the far-off shores it represents and landscape vignettes. As with all quality tapestries it's subtlety and vibrancy transfer well to textiles, adding an almost antique quality to and already distinctive work of art.

Rediscovered Majesty

Nowadays many people are looking to antique maps wall tapestries to add some charm and history to their home decor. With a vast array of options to choose from, including some of history's finest examples of cartography art, there's never been a better time to appreciate these unique works of art.

Copyright © The Tapestry House, all rights reserved. <bio>Sam Barrett writes about the arts and history with a number of interests including textile and tapestry art as well as world map tapestries. http://www.thetapestryhouse.com/products/list/worldmaps.html http://www.thetapestryhouse.com/ </bio>

Visitors to Cyprus sometimes come to the island and spend all their holiday in hotel compounds relaxing and getting a fabulous sun-tan, which with the Cyprus weather is guaranteed, whist this is the perfect destination for those pastimes -- it is a shame to come all this way and not explore the island so grab some Cyprus road maps and maybe even look at Cyprus property for sale for your own place in the sun.

Holiday car hire in Cyprus is very accessible and easy to arrange, you just have to be over 25 with most companies and bring your driving licence and you are sorted. There are many businesses offering holiday car hire so it will pay to look around for the best deal. Most of the vehicles will have a tourist map in the paperwork given to you, but it if you intend to really explore it makes sense to get one of the Cyprus road maps that are foe sale in most general stores. The Cyprus Tourist Office (CTO) also has many maps and brochures available free of charge, just pop in and collect all you need.

The Cyprus road maps show that as the island is actually quite small and the network of highways is very good and links all the major towns, from there you can branch out and wander around at your leisure. If you prefer to have trips mapped out for you there are many guide books that will give you suggested routes that will take in spots you might otherwise miss. It is easy to spot a holiday car hire in Cyprus as all the vehicles have red number plates beginning with Z and are therefore known locally as Z plates.

Cyprus road maps also show the North of the island, but before you plan a trip there do check with your holiday car hire in Cyprus that you are allowed to take the vehicle across as many will not allow it. Turkish car insurance has to be bought by everyone crossing over the Green Line, but this may not be valid for cars that are rented so do enquire first.

Cyprus property for sale is very popular especially to UK citizens due mainly to the feeling of familiarity; most Cypriots speak English, driving is on the left and all the road signs are the same as the British and are in Greek and English, the legal and banking systems are both based on their British counterparts and satellite television means that you can still see your favourite shows! Also on Cyprus road maps are marked the Sovereign Bases where British Forces are based, which means there is also BFBS radios 1 and 2 and if you are near the bases you can sometimes pick up their television station as well. Added to all that there is of course the wonderful climate of long hot summers and mild winters, yet still having snow on the Troodos mountains -- if you miss the cold!!<bio>Kate Deas-Smith recommends having a holiday car hire in Cyprus and using Cyprus road maps to explore the island.</bio>

An atlas is a collection of maps in the form of a book. There are different kinds of atlases available in the market today.

A collection of maps bound into book form is called an ATLAS. There are also atlases in various multimedia formats today. It has geographic features and political boundaries. An atlas usually features:
-	Geopolitics
-	social aspects
-	religious traditions and
-	economic statistics

Claudius Ptolemy, a geographer, constructed from his calculation the first book of atlas. He worked in Alexandria in 150 A.D. In 1477, his first edition was published in Bologna. It was illustrated with a set of 27 maps. This means it was not known then whether these maps were original engraved versions or otherwise.

In 1544, trading centers in Rome and Venice produced many maps. The publishers worked separately and produced maps based on their needs. These maps vary in sizes and later on, they bound them together into composite works. These works were called IATO or Italian, Assembled to Order. It was more often called Lafreri Atlases.

Abraham Ortelius was recognized in issuing the first modern atlas in May 20, 1570. The Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Ortelius has about 53 map-sheets. It actually covers the whole world. This work reduced the available maps into a uniform size.

Gerardo Mercator introduced the earliest atlases in 1595.

The word ATLAS is a common basis of mistaken belief. This is because two mythical figures are connected with the making of maps.

-	King Atlas -- the mythical king of Mauretania.
A great philosopher, mathematician and astronomer based on legend who allegedly made the first celestial globe. It was possibly Mercator's atlas that the legend was referring to. This was when "Atlas" was first coined. This was also where even a description of the King on the title page was included.

-	Atlas (from Greek Mythology) - He is the son of Titan Iapetus and

Clymene (or Asia). He is also the brother of Prometheus.
Atlas was punished by Zeus so as to bear the weight of the heavens on his back. In Homer's Odyssey, he refers to Atlas as the one who knows the depths of the whole sea. He kept the tall pillars that hold the Heavens and the Earth.

In arts, Atlas is represented as the one carrying the heavens or the Celestial Sphere on his shoulders. The earliest representation is the Farnese Atlas. You will see this at Museo Archeologico Nazionale Napoli in Naples, Italy. This figure is more often found on the cover or title-page of atlases.

In modern times, publishers in different countries can reprint maps from different places. Maps displaying roads and transport links are known as Road Atlases. These show transport links and not geographical information.
Road Atlases come in many shapes, sizes and scales. It has motoring organizations in:
-	UK
-	Republic of Ireland
-	Mainland Europe
-	North America
-	Australia and
-	New Zealand

There are different styles of maps, depending on individual countries on a large scale. Thus, it is the user who can find this more useful for them. An example of this is the AA's Close-up map of Britain. The map is of a large scale. It is good for driving on and off road. The scale helps place tracks and conventional roads.

European maps differ in scales as well. When people buy maps of Europe they also need to consider where they are traveling to. Thus, maps are sold in the United States and Canada, having scales that more often the best. These maps can be used for businesses. It can also be used either by tourists or just for general interest.

Australian and New Zealand maps have smaller scale. It is made to be sold for the European market. It was made by motoring organizations or map makers. This was made so that they will have an advantage on knowing the layouts of:
-	Roads
-	railways and
-	rivers<bio>For more information on Reading A Road Atlas please visit our website.</bio>

If you are looking into buying a handheld GPS, then chances are you already have an idea of what these items are and how they can make your life easier. In fact, many people are starting to look into these very useful Global Positioning System devices, since they quite literally tell you were you are in the world. Obviously if you are active in outdoor sports, such as hiking, camping or boating or the like, a GPS can be a very handy item, giving you piece of mind that you will always know exactly where you are. With a GPS, you never need to fear getting lost in the wilderness ever again.

When it comes to choosing a handheld GPS, the first step is to know what you will be using it for. For example, the best GPS for hiking in the Canadian Rockies may not be as useful if you are trying to navigate the city streets of London. Moreover, if you are using your GPS in a boat or car, as well as when walking, you should look for a multipurpose unit.

GPS receivers perform so many functions that you need to decide on the right one for you. For example, the basic GPS simply displays the latitude and longitude of your location. While it might include routes and tracks, the basic variety will not include maps or points of interest.

If you do require maps as well as location details, you should opt for a Mapping Handheld GPS which has the power to download maps from CD-Roms sources such as Garmin MapSource, and Magellan Mapsend. A Mapping Auto GPS is the perfect answer if you are exploring in your car, and likewise the Marine GPS is the ideal choice if you are planning to do a lot of boating.

Before you chose you handheld GPS, be sure to consider how you will be using it. Again, what is needed for hiking in the wilderness may not be appropriate for urban adventures! Speaking with knowledgeable staff can make you decision a lot easier! <bio>Robert Coram writes for http://www.gpsevolution.com a website packed with gps articles and resources. </bio>

Introduction

The technology available due to sensors is making it possible to achieve benevolent results that were formerly impossible. Information is made available with ease and precision.

Zambian authorities have recently used sensor technology to aid in resolving water shortages. Part of the Integrated Water Resource Management for Zambia (IWAREMA), funded by ESA's MERIS sensor aboard Envisat, an array of environmental maps were generated to deliver local policy makers options for effective water resource management.

Mapping out a plan

Maps were produced from the efforts elucidating existing water resources, suitable dam locations, and land cover. The project's primary concern is to protect Zambia's ecosystems mainly in the Kafue flats, which grants water outlets for wildlife, agricultural activities, fisheries, and tourism.

The sensors immediately help with the water shortage, and offer long-term advantages. With access to the maps, authorities can determine the expansion of urban areas and loss of forest and agricultural areas, and assess the risk of erosion, fluctuation in water availability, and percentage of surface water (acting as preparation for early flood warnings).

The project is mainly focused on the Kafue River Basin (a sub-basin of the Zambezi River). The area is of paramount importance to the country's economy and houses more than half of the country's population.

Seeing into the future

More than 30 percent of Zambia's population lives in urban areas. The rate of the county's urbanization has surpassed the rate of infrastructure development and service provisions like water supply and sanitation. The land cover maps will depict how demographic variables will affect natural resources.

The project is a model for future efforts made around the world. The existence and availability of sensor technology decreases the likelihood of disasters such as water shortages and increases the chances of avoiding similar situations completely. <bio>Measurement Specialties Inc.
GPS is a system that's used by the military, companies, and individuals to plot locations on the surface of the earth. These devices are mainly used commercially as high-end maps which offer detailed directions to a plethora of locations in the country. The Garmin Nuvi 350 is an example of such a GPS device. Finding accommodation, food outlets, gas stations, and more is very easy with this device because it contains maps and points of interest.

A PDA is a Personal Digital Assistant or a "pocket computer" in layman's terms. The RIM Blackberry is a perfect example of a PDA that's developed into a cell phone as well, with its advanced audio capabilities. This phone has been dominating the PDA market over many years and continues to gain popularity due to celebrities such as Paris Hilton using them.

Therefore, GPS PDAs are PDAs which have the added function of being GPS enabled. For finding maps and direction you can just turn on your PDA. An example of this device may be the Garmin iQue300 which holds the honor of being the first PDA to include GPS technology. Its GPS system was a Garmin and its PDA Operating System was that of Palm OS 5. An added feature of this device was that you could call up contact information through voice commands.

However, the debate rages on as to which is better? Is it better to have one PDA with GPS, or have your GPS as a separate device?

Regardless of your choice, there are always benefits and drawbacks. Two separate devices will definitely work out to be more expensive. Some of the GPS devices can be quite bulky and can be a problem if you need to carry them around with you. In such situations you will be best suited with a GPS PDA phone. With a single device it's rather difficult and inconvenient to use both the phone and GPS at the same time. A PDA also have a tiny screen, which could make reading the map quite cumbersome.

All in all, it depends on your needs. If your primary use of the PDA is as a phone and organizer, then two separate devices would be better. If you want to save some money and don't mind a little inconvenience, the combined device would be a better choice. <bio>At http://pdas.besttipsonline.com you can get PDA assistance. </bio>

With ticket prices soaring higher it is become much wiser to plan a road trip when you're going on vacation. Sure, plane travel can be more convenient and much quicker; it is often much less reliable because of the new airline safety procedures and the chances for a delay. Plus, a road trip can add quality to any vacation! Here is a guide to planning a road trip to the best of your abilities, what to take and how to stay occupied!

What you need to bring:

=95 Cell phone! Cell phones are pretty important just in case you need it or have any car trouble. Cell phones are a form of safety and protection for road warriors!

=95 Have a map! The best maps out there usually come from the internet nowadays because they are the most up to date. Look at Google Maps or Yahoo! Maps. These maps are great because they give driving directions and estimated time.

=95 Check your car over ahead of time! Check your oil, put air in your tires and make sure you don't have any leaks! If you are traveling a far distance you will want to make sure you don't break down quickly or anytime soon!

=95 Spare tire! Make sure you have a spare tire and make sure that it is in good condition! If you need to change a tire it will go much quicker if you actually have a usable one on you.

=95 Have an emergency kit! Inside your emergency kit should be: a flashlight, road flares, blanket, tool kit, gloves, towel, jumper cables, first aid kit, duct tape, water, spare parts and a pocket knife.

Here are some helpful things you may want to stay occupied and busy on your trip:

=95 Music! Long road trips can get kind of boring so it isn't a bad idea to take some sort of music, whether a CD player or an I-pod. Make sure you have an adapter for your car as well.

=95 Books! If there are other drivers with you, you should bring reading material for the times you aren't behind the wheel.

=95 Blankets! You will want warm blankets and pillows for comfort because as you probably know by now, cars are not the most comfortable places to sleep! Blankets and pillows will turn any car into a bed!

=95 Snacks! Have a bag of snacks and a cooler of ice and sodas because it will cut down on the number of stops you have to make. <bio>Article written by Mark Hammond Marketing Manager of http://www.nationalhotels.co.uk - UK Accommodation Finder and Travel Information website. </bio>

NLP is becoming a familiar buzz word among forward-looking business, self-help and self-improvement circles. But what exactly is NLP and how can it help me? This article will cover the basic precept of NLP techniques and provide an example of how they can be used to change the perceptions keeping you from achieving your full potential.

NLP is the acronym for Neuro Linguistic Programming, the science that was developed in the early 1970s. NLP embraces several techniques in its attempt to bring changes to a person's thinking, learning and communication. Proponents teach that our mind and body (neuro), and the things we say (linguistic) interact and together form our perceptions of the world. This perception is also referred to as our 'model' or 'map' of the world. NLP teaches that we act and feel according to our perceptions of the world around us and not necessarily as a reaction to the real world we're in. NLP then concludes that an impoverished or unrealistic set of beliefs will create a map for us that narrows our field of choice and as a result brings us problems.

So what do the practitioners of NLP do about these beliefs and our world maps? Is there a concrete plan that can change these maps or are they something we're stuck with? NLP believes these maps can indeed be changed, and one of the methods used to do so is called the Meta-Model.

The NLP Meta-model is a complete set of questions designed to challenge and expand the limits a person has imposed on themselves through their model or "map" of the world. When a person is talking about a situation or a problem, their word choices (which NLP calls "indicators") will actually distort, generalize and completely delete portions of the true experience. An NLP practioner will apply specific language patterns in an attempt to help the client recover the information beneath the surface of the chosen words.

NLP was originally developed to understand the language patterns of successful therapists so the results of these therapists could be replicated. Since then, the practices have been expanded to include solutions for business, self-help and other self-improvement areas.

Applied to business, a meta-model could be utilized to help an individual elaborate on the details of a problem, a proposal or objectives by seeking the important information being veiled by the person's perspectives.
