Woodworking is responsible for lots of the houses, furniture and other wooden materials and articles used in homes and office surroundings. Simply defined, woodworking is the art or craft (of which it seems more like magic) of creating things out of wood. Woodworking is usually done by a carpenter but nowadays anyone can do it, it can be learned to a point in a very short period of time and is a very enjoyable pass time.

Woodworking is an art and while it may come easy for carpenters to build other people's construction requirements, most people have a hard time building even a simple four sided cabinet. Woodworking is an acquired skill and most carpenters/ <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/woodworkers" rel="tag">woodworkers learned the skill early on in life. Being able to create quality and decorative woodworks is really a gift which not all people are able to do very easily.

The art of woodworking used to be done manually by skilled carpenters and the likes. However, new technological advancements now allow for the discovery of new machines that have made woodworking less manual, more modern and more creative and efficient (plus a heck of a lot more accurate). Instead of shaping wood materials in man's creative but flaw full hands, the woodworkers now make use several machines to shape the wooden product they want to make.

A beginning woodworker should have the necessary tools and supplies even if he is just starting out in his craft. Woodworking power tools can be quite tempting but those who don't have the budget for such gadgets should stick with the hand woodworking tools.

The modernization of woodworking has lifted the woodworking art to a new level. Modern woodworking tools and equipment led to the mushrooming of do it yourself shops that offer wooden materials, project designs for specific woodwork and the corresponding tools and equipment that can be used by the aspiring woodworker.

Both aspiring and expert woodworkers should be aware of the important terminologies used in woodworking. One often-used term is milling, which is the use of a mill for grinding a board. Woodworkers should know that board-feet isn't a kind of furniture but it is a standard measurement when selling rough lumber in the United States. On the other hand, yield doesn't refer to harvest of agricultural products but it is the term given to denote the efficiency of milling unprocessed lumber. Waste is a common result when milling rough wood so when you are said to have accomplished a hundred percent yield, it means you have milled the rough lumber without producing any waste at all.

Woodworking is also synonymous with joints so you should know the different kinds of joints. A dovetail joint is a stable and sturdy joint for a woodworking project. Dovetail joints can be done with the use of a scroll saw or even by hand. What matters is you know the technique of creating dovetails and you are patient and skillful. Another type of joint is the mortise and tenon joint, a kind of woodworking joint popularly used in ships. It is also a sturdy joint and a project using this kind of joint will definitely be a showcase of your woodworking prowess.

There are several terms used in woodworking which every woodworker should know. If you aren't aware of them then you must do some research or talk to expert woodworkers as you may learn a lot from them.

When starting out, choose a workbench that fits the place where you do your woodworking projects. A workbench with a wood top would be ideal. The size of the workbench also depends on the type of woodworking projects you intend to do in the future. If it is just for crafting toys then a small bench would be ideal. <bio>Byron Branfield All Wood Working http://www.all-wood-working.com </bio>

There are a lot of woodworking tools ranging from the manual tools to the most modern power tools. A combination of the traditional tools and modern technology tools is important for a woodworker to invest in order to produce high quality products.

Woodworking is a craft of creating furniture or anything that is made of wood. The most common types of wood used for woodworking are hardwood, softwood, and the most recent man made materials like MDF and plywood. While traditional hand tools can execute well for woodworking, the need for power tools and modern equipments are also vital for further productivity and convenience.

Traditional woodworkers normally use manual hand tools as well as simple measuring tools. In spite of that, they can accurately create beautiful furniture. However, traditional skills and tools require much more time to complete a project. With this concern, many woodworkers have shifted to utilizing modern woodworking machines and more accurate measuring tools. These modern tools and machines offer woodworkers ease of doing even the toughest projects in less time. With these features, woodworkers can perform with increased productivity and greater precision.

It is a fact that woodworkers must have the proper tools whether it is hand tools or power tools so that outstanding wood crafts can be built. It is also vital that they learn the proper way of using these tools. Below are some of the essential tools needed for woodworking shops. We start with the most basic to the most hi-end power tools which a woodworker ought to have.

Hammers

Hammers are mostly used by traditional woodworkers. This tool is a general woodworking tool and is necessary especially when applying nails for crafting furniture. This can also be used in making jigs for your workshop. For quality woodworking, a small dead-blow hammer having a weight of one to two pounds is recommended. A rubber mallet hammer is also needed for accomplishing finishing touches crucial to avoiding scratches on the wood.

Hand Plane

Hand plane tools are frequently manipulated to remove small wood surpluses in finishing cuts of wood. This tool can also be adjusted depending on the required cut. It can be used to take away extra glue from the wood joints for a smoother finishing.

Hand Saw

Although there are power tools for cutting wood, it is still best if you have a hand saw. This tool is very flexible and can do a lot of general cutting requirements. It can be utilized to cut braces or complete some trimming.

Level

This tool is substantially functional for hanging cabinets and tool holders.

Screwdrivers

Screwdrivers are not only valuable to woodworking but they are versatile tools, as well. Although rarely used in woodworking applications, screwdrivers are still an indispensable tool for a workshop. They are ideal for adjusting or tightening other power tools and can also be used in fixing screws in furniture and cabinetry.

Chisels

Even if you have the most advanced power tools, there will always be a project that will necessitate the application of chisels. These tools are available in different sizes and are good for multi purpose treatments. They are just right for rounding corners, glue removal, as a scraper, and a lot more functions.

Table Saw

Generally, table saws are the heavily exploited among all machines in a woodworking shop. These machines are significantly advantageous in cutting large quantities and sizes of wood pieces in less time. This too is considered the backbone of a woodworking shop, so make sure to purchase the best which would last for long years.

Band Saw

These types of saw machines are great for accurately cutting curves and intricate forms of cuts.

Radial Arm Saw

This tool is handled for manifold cutting applications such as cross cutting, stock ripping, and bevel cutting. These are joined by miters, rabbets, and dadoes. It can also be applied as a guide for routers.

Power Drill

A power drill is elemental and has the power for most drilling job. This tool is handy and is useful for drilling hard to reach areas of a project, as well. This power tool comes with a modifiable speed.

Drill Press

The drill press can be employed for drilling holes in stocks of wood with precision. This machine comes with adjustable clamps which hold the stock into place. Drill press machines can either be for table tops or floors.

Random Orbital Sander

The orbital sander can perform sanding with random motion and thus, reduces sanding markings as compared to palm sanders. The sanding disks can be effortlessly replaced with proper grits required for a task.<bio>For more information on Essential Wood Working Tools please visit our website.</bio>

The power tool most often used in woodwork today is perhaps the router. The humble router is the mainstay of many woodworkers' workshops and along with the bandsaw it is usually mentioned as the tool most of us wood workers could not do without.

A surprisingly large percentage of amateur woodworkers would often over look the versatility of a router often spending much more money on there jigsaw, believing it to be the more useful of the two tools. Personally, I think you just have to watch a router in the hands of a skilled artisan such as Norm Abram to realize this isn't true.

Dovetail joints are a good example of this. Yes, they can be done with a jigsaw and a little patience. However, it is many, many times easier safer and quicker to use a router with a dovetailing jig, as Norm usually shows us on the New Yankee Workshop.

Many amateurs also consider the router an dangerous tool. Yes, it is dangerous, very dangerous in fact. The router should be treated with the up most respect. The kind of respect you show a Doberman. Router cutters spin very fast (up to 30,000 rpm), so do not underestimate the speed with which they will have a finger off - it will be gone long before you even feel it! That said, there is an old saying in woodworking that the tool that you respect the least is the one that will bite you. At least with the router your careful a steady with it. There is a surprising number of people across the world who have lost a finger or two to the humble bandsaw.

It is often said that the home workshop is the most dangerous place you can be. So please if you are investing in a workshop, make sure you save some money for some safety equipment. Such as goggles, dust masks and extractors. However, do not forget the often-overlooked safety devices such as a kill switch for any powered machines. Keep a powder fire extinguisher to hand, along with an eye bath and a well-stocked first aid kit.

As I mentioned above the wood router can be used for all sorts of problem tasks in the workshop. For example, Trend Machinery has a jig for cutting out a hole for a mortise lock. Whist this is not a time consuming task in its self, imagine having to fit doors in an office block or block of flats. Another popular use of the router is for jointing kitchen worktops together.

Whilst the router is an often-feared tool, it is also very versatile. As the old saying goes with great power comes great responsibility. If I were to recommend a router to you, I would have to say a Trend Machinery T11 or Makita 3612 if you are looking for a large router.

Band saw wise, I would suggest a Scheppach Basato 4 it is a high quality saw that is not too expensive.

Remember people measure twice cut once. <bio>Johan Nickson is an work wear expert at http://www.powertooldirect.co.uk </bio>

Those who are handy may be able to make a crib using crib woodworking plans. Custom built cribs are not only beautiful they are filled with special meaning as well. There are many crib woodworking plans available to you. Here are some tips for choosing and using crib woodworking plans wisely.

=B7 Check woodworking sites. Some offer plans for free while others charge for them. Some offer plans immediately for download or you may choose to have the plans sent to you through the mail. Typical baby crib plans for woodworkers sell for about $15 and up.

=B7 When choosing a crib building plan think about its complexity and your woodworking skills. While you may be able to take on a challenge you don't want to get stuck in the middle with an unfinished crib. Consider the skill level needed for the type of crib you want to build and pick a crib in your skill level. If choosing a plan through a Web site look for comments from others who have already made the crib.

=B7 Make sure that the baby crib woodworking plans meet all the federal safety guidelines. Check the most current standards before choosing a plan. Remember that some plans may be older or out of date and some originate in another country where safety standards aren't followed.

=B7 When choosing a crib woodworking plan make sure that the plan contains detailed instructions and not just basic instructions. The more detailed the plan the better the results will be, especially for those with less woodworking skills.

=B7 Look for crib woodworking plans that include color photos which make the process easier to follow. Also, plans that have detailed drawings and exploded views are the easiest to follow so review what is included in the plan before purchasing it.

=B7 Allow plenty of time to build the baby crib. Most people who take this project on are not professional woodworkers and are building the crib in their spare time. Unlike other projects that don't have a due date, the crib does need to be used by a specific date. Don't cut it too close or you'll be stressed at the end and may produce a less than excellent result. A rule of thumb is to try to have the crib fully completed one month before it is needed.

=B7 Seek help if and when you need it. There are many ways to get some assistance on your crib project. Don't be afraid to use any resources that are available to you. Many woodworking web sites have forums where you can ask others questions. This is an excellent way to get support. You may also be able to get support from the maker of the crib plans. Some offer a phone number or web site specifically to help those with questions along the way.

=B7 Always test the finished product before starting to use it with the baby. Make sure that the rails work smoothly. Ensure that there are no sharp or rough edges and that all the hardware is properly attached. If staining or painting the crib allow adequate time for the piece to dry and air out properly. <bio>Article written by Randi Reese, she offers a wide selection of baby cribs at http://www.cribsandtoddlerbeds.com </bio>

Creating your own products to sell online is definitely a unique way to be your own supplier. A lot of people really love to buy unique items that cater to craftsmanship. If you have good skills you can do well.

Traditionally when you think of wooden items that are for sale, you think of the traditional items you see at crafts sales. It used to be that spice racks, paper towel holders and picture frames were the most common item. This has always bothered me since they are such basic and mundane items that don't really cater to the skills of real craftsman. Even in my 11th grade shop class when most guys were making sconces, I wanted to make something practical. So I built a cabinet to house my stereo. To me this made sense. I bought the wood for $11 and ended up with something that we used in our home for years. This is how buyers think as well, give them something they can use and that they cannot regularly find in a typical department store.

Target Audience

Think of who your target audience is when thinking of a product to make. Large target audiences give you a better chance of selling your product on a regular basis. The typical woodworking items discussed above are often purchased by an "older" target audience. The problem is, they are not a large user of the internet shopping portals. This group is changing and starting to access shopping online, but start out with a better chance to make consistent sales.

Another idea to keep in mind is to do your research. Take the time to look through the completed items portion of EBay. You can find out a lot about what items sell by looking at auctions that already closed and sold their items. You can do this several ways including accessing the "what's hot" section of EBay, (go to sitemap at top of page and then scroll down half way down in the middle of the screen) I have found that unusual items sell the best.

Think about this, table legs. Table legs that are handmade and unique, sell very well. Don't take my word for it, do your research. A lot of woodworkers come online to buy a part of a project they cannot make themselves. Most table legs require the use of a lathe to make them. A lot of shops don't have a lathe in their arsenal. Woodworkers tend to stock their shops with a limited budget with the die hard basic tools. You can also use a legacy ornamental mill to make some excellent table legs that will fetch high prices. Most people will wince at the thought of spending the bigger dollars to get the mill. However you can make some items on it that you cannot get or make anywhere else. I call these short cut tools. They make killer projects but cost premium dollars. The extra dollars can be justified quite easily by making more sales and the tools area tax write off, if you structure your business. I use woodworking shows to get great ideas on what to market. The vendors are eager to help you figure out a unique product that you can make with their tool. Again the key is to think outside the box. <bio>Tony Scorch is a contributing author to http://www.Routertabledepot.com home of unique router tables, parts and an extensive article section. </bio>

This article describes an easy way for a man to choose a jewelry box as a gift for a woman by answering three simple questions.

It's that time of year when a young man's fancy turns to, "What am I gonna get my girl for Christmas?!" While jewelry is the typical choice, a jewelry box can be an equally pleasing gift. It's a little out of the ordinary, but buying your special someone a jewelry box shows that you've put a little extra effort into her gift.

A couple of things to remember: First, much like jewelry, this is an area where quality counts. A cheap, flimsy box with the wrong kind of lining can actually make jewelry tarnish faster. You want to find a sturdy box, preferably solid wood, with a fabric lining. There are also smaller boxes of glass or ceramic that might be good for teens, but buying anything other than wood for a woman's large collection of jewelry is just asking for trouble.

Second, don't limit yourself to the boxes carried by the jewelry store where you bought her last piece of jewelry. There are many woodworkers all over the United States who are handcrafting jewelry boxes. These boxes are usually sold through local gift stores and not through jewelry store chains. In addition, art galleries often have beautiful boxes, and of course you can find them online.

But what kind of box should you get? There are still many options available among the styles of wooden jewelry boxes, jewelry chests and jewelry racks. Just answer these three questions to find that perfect box for your perfect mate:

How much jewelry does she have?

A big collection of smaller pieces like earrings and rings calls for a large box with several smaller compartments -- think two or three drawers with dividers inside. A smaller collection might benefit from a jewelry rack instead of a box. A jewelry rack can be placed on a dresser or hung on a wall to save space. Some racks revolve to make access to jewelry easier. Even if the her jewelry collection grows later on, a jewelry rack will come in handy for her favorite -- and thus, most often worn -- pieces.

What type of jewelry will she put in it?

If she has plenty of necklaces and just a few earrings you could get by with a necklace rack to hang necklaces and a small box for the earrings. Having chunkier bracelets and pins, however, means that a box with larger, more open compartments may be in order. Many jewelry boxes now have areas for specific types of jewelry: soft slots for rings, side compartments to hang necklaces and bracelets, even long compartments to lay out watches.

How do you want the box to fit in with the home's other furniture?

Most people make the mistake of thinking that a jewelry box always has to match the furniture in the room. When we show customers the exotic wood jewelry boxes in our stores, many of these customers inevitably say, "But my bedroom furniture is Oak...that box won't match!" When you choose a box that accents your furniture instead of matching it, you allow the craftsmanship of the box and the beauty of the wood to stand on its own. The box becomes a showpiece in the room instead of blending into the other woodwork. Also, remember that the jewelry box you buy today can be a timeless display of craftsmanship that passed on to future generations as an heirloom.

One more thing: It's bad luck to give someone an empty box as a gift. Adding a new piece of jewelry to the inside of the box will make your gift complete!<bio>Melani Weber enjoys working with the woodworkers and artists whose creations are featured in the gift store where she has worked for the last 20 years.
A few centuries ago, in the 1600's you may not have been likely to find chairs in all churches. If you did find seating, chances are good it would not have been in good shape because money was not readily available and churches often had their congregation stand rather than sit. Today, however, church chairs are a necessity. Very few people are likely to attend a church that doesn't give them somewhere to sit!

Frequently in the 1600s and 1700s, and even the 1800s, those churches that did have church chairs or pews for the congregation chose to rent that seating out, so in order to have a place to sit on Sunday, you paid for your family to have a pew or chairs reserved for them. Unlike today, that means that your family could be the last ones in the door, but you would still have a place to sit while others who arrived before you may have had to stand. Obviously, if your family was financially well-off, you were more likely to have pew space, and less-wealthy families who could not afford it would have to stand.

Later, near the end of the 1800s, churches began to rethink their church chairs and seating arrangements. It became more important to offer pews or chairs to the congregation, and it was becoming more important to allow everyone a place to sit regardless of their ability to pay for the privilege. Typically back then, and still today, church chairs and other church furniture is expected to match; that is, they should be made out of the same kind of wood. Today, that is not as difficult to accomplish as it was a few hundred years ago. Back then, building church chairs was time consuming and required the skill of many workers. It was also more difficult to get "matching trees" to have matching furniture. Usually, a church would buy all the same type of lumber all at the same time to ensure that the wood would all be the same. So, once that was done, the church had wood but no stacking church chairs, regular church chairs, or pews. All they had was raw wood.

Once the lumber arrived, it was time to get the wood in the best possible shape for furniture making. It had to be put somewhere out of the elements and the best place was a place that could be heated so some of the natural wetness in the wood could evaporate and the woodworkers could work with wood that had been dried a little. Then, the wood had to be cut to the right size and any natural blemishes had to be removed. Then, the woodworkers could begin their skilled carving of the church chairs or pews.

They would carve out the individual pieces of the church furniture first; for example, they would make the legs and arms, then the seat, then the back. Once those were carved, all the pieces could be put together to form complete church chairs. They could be held in place with special types of glue and/or jigs. It was important that the church furniture be finely crafted so that it would last a long time and also remain intact with its beautiful and pretty looks. So, you can see what a time-consuming and difficult task it used to be to make church furniture! To keep those church chairs looking their best, they needed to be waxed and/or oiled on a regular basis, as well, so upkeep was important also.

Today, most church furniture is manufactured by machine in factories, so it is less time-consuming and takes a smaller percentage of the church budget than it did a few hundred years ago. Some fine wooden church furniture is still oiled, but for the most part modern church chairs and pews have a lacquer coating or some other kind of wood finish that simply allows the furniture to be dusted to look its best.

As evidence of the difficulty in getting a lot of church chairs or pews in a church, you can look to St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The Basilica itself is huge, but the seating is very limited. That probably has to do with the complicated and time-consuming method of church chair building that was necessary several centuries ago.

Nowadays, it is not nearly so difficult to furnish a church. Church furniture is mass produced, and even if it is not, shipping of lumber and improvements in furniture making equipment have made the task of providing church furnishing so much easier. In fact, if you ever find yourself with the task of furnishing a church, you can probably get everything you need from the Internet. What could be simpler than that?<bio>Seomul Evans is a seo copywriter for a leading Church Chairs manufacturer specializing in affordable Church Chairs.</bio>

Woodworking may just be a hobby to some people but it can also become a money-earning hobby and a small business later on. Most entrepreneurs started their businesses as hobbies but are now full pledged business people.

The good thing about turning a hobby into a money-making venture is that it doesn't seem like work at all because you love doing what you do. When you love what you are doing, it makes things easier and more profitable financial and emotionally.

Woodworking is a hobby that can be turned into a business venture. Woodworking is the art of creating things that are decorative and functional using wood as a material. It is a very labor-intensive occupation but the use of modern techniques and equipment lighten the load a bit.

Creating cabinets and furniture through woodworking can be a possible money-earner because people love to have wooden items in their homes because it brings memories of country life and coziness. Those who are starting out in woodworking can take advantage of shops selling do it yourself wooden products. There are also shops selling woodworking kits which includes the pre-cut materials as well as step by step instructions on how to do the project.

You can start a woodworking hobby with simple projects that require simple and inexpensive hand tools. However, a woodworker who wants to do more complicated wooden projects and wants to move on to become a better woodworker should start buying woodworking tools. The search for woodworking tools shouldn't be that hard because there are vendors both on the internet and in actual shops who sell woodworking tools at reasonable prices.

You should be very careful and informed when choosing woodworking tools because you don't want to waste your money and effort on useless tools that aren't useful and important for the projects you will do. Talk to experienced woodworkers about the tools that are most useful in the industry, their present market value and their ability to carry out big projects.

You can go from hardware to other stores selling woodworking tools. However, an easy way to get these tools would be through the internet. Internet shops not only offer a list of available woodworking tools but they also offer some articles on the proper woodworking tools to buy especially for a beginner. There are also sites that give reviews on woodworking tools. Internet shops also offer different brands and prices of woodworking tools like saws and chisels.

You must take stock of what projects you will be doing in the future because it will give you an idea of what woodworking tools to buy. The belief that the more expensive the tool, the better its performance may be true but if you are new to woodworking and are just practicing, the best tools aren't a necessity. Of course, if you think you will do woodworking for a longer time and might consider this as a permanent hobby or business then you should buy quality tools at the best possible prices.

To start with, you need to have a drill which you can use for a number of projects. A cordless drill would be ideal but isn't recommended for those just starting in woodworking because it is expensive. You will also need a circular saw for basic cutting requirements. A driller and a good saw will enable you to do a variety of projects.

A wooden project will always require sanding so it is advisable to have a finishing sander which you can use to smooth surfaces as well as the edges of some wooden projects. It is also ideal to buy a quality table saw which can withstand the pressures of ripping wood. A common tool used by woodworkers for cutting the edge of a wood as well as molding is the router.

Wooden projects will require a lot of wooden pieces that need to be combined or joined. To be able to do this, you should also buy a biscuit joiner. This tool is important in hastening a project's assembly.

There are more tools that would be useful to you in the future, depending on the type of projects you will be doing. You should only buy the really important ones which can be used in different small or start-up projects. Remember that when buying woodworking tools for a beginner; just choose a few pieces that are inexpensive. <bio>Mohamed Rabea - Online Tips and Resources! http://www.retractable-awning-guide.info http://www.retractableawning-now.info </bio>

Planning is the secret to a successful home workshop. More and more people are setting up a woodworking or model engineering shop, either in their basement or garage.

The first step is to make sure your location is dry. You may need to make repairs to your garage roof, windows or door. If you are planning on using your basement then you will need to waterproof it, so that damp and the corrosion and rot it causes do not become issues.

Your next step is to provide water and electricity supplies. You need to have hand washing facilities if you are going to keep your job clean. An electricity supply suitable for running your machine tools is essential. These tools will be permanently wired in. You will also need lots of switched electric sockets about three feet from the floor. These will be used for plug in tools.

The number of lights will need to be increased. Three fluorescent fittings will be enough for most home workshops. The glare free ones are better, but you may need to fit four of these. Be sure to fit them above your drill, saw and lathe.

You will need to consider the location for your machine tools. These need to be away from the door and back onto a wall. This reduces the possibility of someone walking round the back and being hurt.

You need to install a dust extraction system, especially for wood and plastic work. This will remove potentially harmful sawdust from your machining areas and collect it for disposal.

Choosing your tools and workbench are the final issues.

A few solid wood traditional woodworking benches are the best choice. These will last for years and are solidly built to last for years.

A lathe is the absolutely essential tool for home model makers and woodworking businesses.

It is essentially a device for reshaping square cross-section timber, metal or plastic into a circular cross-section piece of finished material. This is achieved by holding the material to be worked between 2 plates and spinning it. As the material spins someone holds a sharp tool against it, shaving off some of the material. Round table and chair legs are produced using lathes.

Lathes come in different specifications, designed for different intensities of use. The home model maker will clearly need a much lower spec lathe than the timber company making tables. Specification differences include the output of the motor, the distance between centers (the clamping plates), stands and chuck size.

It is possible to buy second-hand lathes without too much difficulty and someone starting out, either in home model making or in a home-based business should probably consider this option first.

The band saw has become the preferred power saw for most woodworkers. It has a long band of steel as the blade that travels around two or three wheels. The band comes in various widths and it is possible to use a narrow width band saw blade for scroll-work and irregular shapes.

Timber mills use very large band saws for ripping lumber; they are preferred over circular saws for ripping because they result in less waste.

Resaws are large band saws that are optimized for a narrow kerf, and therefore low waste. The blade is wide usually between 2 and 3 inches. They are primarily used for cutting wood along its thickness, to produce a veneer.

Home woodworkers can purchase a range of band saws suitable for use in the basement or garage workshop. <bio>Loreno Lepe is an engineer.
Tips, Setup, Bits, Multiple Uses

Would you like to know how to use a Router Table? Here are tips to realize the most from your router table.

You do not need a miter channel. Normally, you slide your work along the fence. If using a miter channel, the fence must be square to the miter channel. Why go to that trouble?

You can build a jig to glide along the Fence. This automatically aligns the wood for a square cut. You can make adjustment in profile and depth of cut. A shop-made Router Lift makes this easy.

A quality Router Table fence eases dust collection. Use your Router Table and Fence for simplicity and ease!

You should never put your work between the fence and the router bit. That is just asking for trouble.

Usually, you slide the wood from right to left (when looking at the fence from the front). That is called an anti-climb cut. You make practically all cuts this way.

If very careful, you can go a short distance in the opposite direction. But you must hold on tight to avoid kickback and/or injury. This climb cut gives cleaner edges, which you should attempt only after a lot of experience.

Just do less than 15% of your cuts this way. You must use shallow or light cuts for the climb-cut. Do NOT take big cuts. Use this method when your hands are protected and away from the router bit.

How to use a Router Table to center edge-to-edge joints:

Have you ever wondered how to center edge-to-edge joints? You use this technique for making solid tabletops, wide panels, or even make edging to go around your router table top.

Let's use an actual example of oak edging on a MDF Router Table Top. The top is 1 1/8" thick. The oak edging is 1 1/8" thick.

How do we guarantee a centered edge? Decide on the tongue dimension. You have a 1/4" slot cutter. You want the tongue thickness less than two times the cut. Hence, the tongue thickness is slightly less than 1/2". We use a 1/4" depth of cut in this example.

We want a tongue that is less than 1/2" in thickness. Therefore, we know that the rabbet on the Table Top is slightly more than 5/16" on both sides of a 1 1/8" thick piece.

Rabbet the top with a rabbet bit with a bearing to produce a 1/4" rabbet. You don't want to take a lot during your first pass. Therefore, the depth of cut is set for 1/8" for your first pass.

Set the fence so it is even with the bearing of the rabbet bit.

Cut both top and bottom of the router top. Take your time and go all the way around. Make sure the workpiece is flat on the Router Table Top. Or use the router on top of the workpiece.

Measure the thickness of the tongue. If it is larger than 1/2", then adjust the depth of cut. A shop-made router lift makes this easy. Note: you rout both sides; therefore use one-half the adjustment for each side.

Make your adjustment, rout the top and bottom again. The tongue's thickness is now slightly less than 1/2".

Replace your rabbeting bit with your 1/4" slot cutter.

I always disconnect the power source to the router before changing bits!

Sit the rabbeted piece on the router tabletop near the slot cutter. Raise the Router so the bottom of the slot cutter aligns with the bottom of the tongue. You may need support if the workpiece is large.

Set the depth of cut for the slot to around 3/16" initially. Now slot your Oak edging. Turn it over and slot again. Test the slot on the tongue. Is it too tight? If so, remember that you make two passes with the slotter. Only lower your slot bit by 1/2 of the dimension needed. By the way, the Porter Cable 7518 Router makes this a snap.

Since the slot cut is 1/4", the second pass is not using the entire cutter. You get an exactly center slot that fits on the tongue.

Once the slot (groove) fits on the tongue, you are ready to set your final depth of the groove. The final depth of cut is slightly more than 1/4" to allow for glue.

Set your fence for this final depth. Remember - make two passes with the slotter. This gives you an exact fit.

You can use this method for any edge-to-edge joinery, such as tabletops, panels, large drawer fronts, and any time you want to join two-pieces. You get perfect alignment and a rock-solid joint.<bio>For more information on Using Your Router Table, including pictures and tips, please visit How to Use a Router Table Jim is a woodworker with over 36 years of experience. A table saw can cut up wood adequately but tenon making necessitates a fixture. Drilling holes in line on the drill press demans a fence. You can Bandsaw circles free hand. If you want two of them the same diameter, you'll need a jig.

Hand tools are just as reliant on jigs. A corner chisel needs a guide to chisel a square mortise corner. Most cutting tools require assistance to achieve their chosen task. Routers are the worst-case situation -- they are purely needy and dependent on support.

You might think that the key to getting control of the router is difficult. Instinctively, you would think a spinning tool enclosed in a metal case is not good for jigs and fixtures, but it is.

Commercial jigs are available, as some experts suggest. Can you make your own? If done correctly, they are better than most commercial jigs and cost a lot less. You can make better the jig after building your first one. As this evolution continues, your work improves. Often, you find more uses for the same jig.

The point is jigs aid you to become a quality woodworker. Besides, your skills will increase as you make woodworking jigs!

A good woodworking jig allows quick set-ups, and efficient cuttings. With a better-quality jig, few mistakes are possible and not much skill is necessary for good results. Can you ask for more?

Some jigs take time to make. Once finished, you can use them repeatedly over a period of years. This is an excellent reason to use first-rate materials and take your time to align the pieces.

Let's discuss a couple of the woodworking jigs that you can make. These jigs are superior to Commercial Jigs.

Mortise Jig

Why bother with a mortise jig? The mortise and tenon is the best joint for furniture. The joint resists tension and twist, and work great in compression and shear. In addition, registration of your joint is perfect.

Some people use hand chisels or a drill press with hollow square chisels. For the most precise and repeatable mortises, you should consider a mortise jig. For a perfect fit, you want the tenon to fit the mortise exactly.

The Mortise Jig gives excellent results without compromising quality. The mortise and tenon joint will last for a lifetime. You can make mortises of nearly any length, width or depth. Moreover, they are repeatable for multiple cuts.

How does the mortise jig work?
The beauty of this system is simplicity.
The set up is quick.
The cuttings are efficient.
It supports the workpiece in all directions.
It locks in the router to remove only the mortise needed.
It is repeatable for several pieces, such as multiple drawers' cavities on each side of a desk.
It makes the joint uniform and strong.

Tenon Jig

A Tenon Jig is easy to make. It provides precise four-faced tenons of nearly any length and width. It has fewer parts than the Mortise Jig, yet is just as precise.

With a Tenon Jig, the cutting results are excellent, the process fast, and guaranteed safety. All that you need is a little patience to make a Tenon Jig. Along with the Mortise Jig, you can instantly have a mortise and tenon joint that fits snugly and aligns correctly.

Using these two woodworking jigs, you can craft precise mortise and tenon joints in less time than any other method. You get accurate alignment for both parts. Can you ask for more?

You can build many woodworking jigs. Examples: Baby Crib Spindles Jig, Circle Cutting Jig, Edge Guides, Inlay Jig and Templates, Lapping Jig, Notching Jig, and Router Insert Plate Jig and Template, just to name a few.

You will gain confidence with making jigs. It gives you more flexibility with your projects.
Woodworkers, hobbyists and clock enthusiasts have often looked to grandfather clock kits in order to build their own clocks. The popularity of grandfather clocks has never been greater. Interchangeably referred to as tall case, long case or floor clocks, the venerable grandfather clock has been widely produced since the seventeenth century. Variations of the classic grandfather clock include the grandmother clock and the granddaughter clock. Grandmother and granddaughter clocks are generally shorter than the average grandfather clock and feature smaller dial faces.

Through the years, craftspeople have turned these timepieces into works of aesthetic and musical art. Vintage and antique grandfather clocks have become family heirlooms, passed down for generation to generation. Antique and vintage floor clocks from such famous makers as the Willards, Levi Hutchins and Samuel Mulliken have piqued the interest of collectors from all over the world.

For a number of years, skilled woodworkers have been able replicate popular designs from scratch. The market for grandfather clock kits was, for many years, geared towards hobbyists and collectors who had a good bit of skill at fine woodworking. Thankfully, the market for clock kits has advanced once again.

Designed for hobbyists and clock enthusiasts with average woodworking skill, grandfather clock kits are now available that make the process of creating a master work much easier. Manufacturers of clock kits have designed their products in a way that has taken some of the guesswork out of the process. Without the need for specialized woodworking tools, most kits include most everything you need to build a complete working clock.

Selecting a floor clock kit starts with the case. There is endless variety of styles from which to choose, from the traditional, to designs that are more contemporary. Cases are available in a selection of fine hardwoods such as cherry, oak, walnut and ash. Many of these case kits have been cut and milled to fit together properly. To make assembling the case even easier, some of the more complex components such as a door come preassembled. Holes for hardware such as locks and latches are often predrilled.

Not all wood kits come complete with items such as cabinet glass. Many manufacturers may offer a selection of glass panels, from flat to beveled, as options. Other case options include differing styles of hardware such as locks, latches and hinges. The all important dial face may come in various styles including moon phase dial plates, shaker styles and the smaller diameter dials that are characteristic of grandmother and granddaughter clocks. Moon phase dials are integrated with the clocks movement to calculate automatically the phases of the moon.

The heart of any clock is the movement. The movements are usually sold separately from the case kit and are available in various configurations. As a rule, the more simple the movement, the less expensive it is. The movement can easily cost as much or more than the case kit. Some movements may feature more than one chime tone. Others may have a mechanism that automatically mutes the chimes during nighttime hours. There are many other types of options available when purchasing a clock kit including different styles of pendulums and counter weights.

It is important to understand that building your own grandfather clock is not an easy business. A great deal of time and patience is needed to do the job correctly. Building something as large as a grandfather clock is not a kitchen table project. The process of finishing the wood case may involve using volatile adhesives, stains and varnishes. The importance of having a dedicated work area that is clean and well organized cannot be understated.

If you enjoy a challenge, consider building your own grandfather clock from a kit. The work will tedious but the feeling of accomplishment can last a lifetime. <bio>Michael O'Brien is the staff writer for the internet shopping site http://www.finewebstores.com.
After the advent of the printing press, when average people began to be literate and own books, there were no such things as bookcases. People simply put their books in cupboards, sometimes taking the doors off for easy access. Eventually woodworkers started making freestanding bookcases like the ones we see today.

Wood is still by far the most common material used to make bookcases. It's sturdy, handsome and traditional. Libraries often use metal shelves, but these lack the aesthetic appeal that most people want for their homes. Bookcases made of granite, marble or other materials are on the market, but their expense prevents them from being widely used.

Bookcase design is fairly simple, and most consumers still prefer the standard andquot;lookandquot; for both form and function. People who have hundreds of books in their possession usually want something sturdy and simple, elegant perhaps, but mostly focused on the basic task of holding the books.

Some innovations have been made, however. A fairly recent shift in bookcase design has the shelves at the bottom much deeper than the ones at the top, tapering up as they go. This design, aside from being visually appealing, is great for homes with small children because it makes it virtually impossible for the bookcase to be tipped over.

Other bookcases are shaped in a modern, stylish fashion, with shelves of different sizes and lengths. These are often more useful as decor than as bookcases, as they don't actually hold very many books. But if you don't have many books (or knickknacks, picture frames, etc.) to display, one of these modern designs may complement your home nicely.

Many bookcases that require assembly come with adjustable shelves, allowing the owner to accommodate books of unusually large or small heights. These bookcases are not generally of the highest quality, however, and may not be as visually pleasing as some of the more expensive ones. They are usually perfectly functional, though. <bio>Jon Kilminster writes for http://www.bookcasemarket.com a website packed with information on kids bookcases and oak bookcases. </bio>

Woodworking can be an enjoyable and rewarding hobby or profession. When setting up a woodworking area, it's important to stock the right tools and follow some practical safety rules to make the most of your woodworking projects.

Nearly everyone has used a hammer at some point in time. And hammers come in many shapes and sizes. The most versatile and helpful to the woodworker is the claw hammer, which features a smooth, slightly rounded finish head. Choose a hammer that is not too heavy but fits comfortably in your hand, such as a 20 ounce model.

An invaluable woodworking tool, the speed square is the quickest and easiest tool for making a square line for an end cut. The triangular-shaped measuring tool is designed to assist the woodworker in making square marks or angles on stock. It can also be used to mark any angle up to 45 degrees or measure up to six inches. Speed squares are available in 6- and 12-inch models and the aluminum model is nearly indestructible.

The 25-foot retractable tape measure is a woodworker must. Be on the lookout for certain features when choosing a tape measure. Tape measures include both standard (imperial) and metric markings. Your tape measure should also have a locking mechanism that allows you to pull out a length of tape and lock the unit so that it won't retract. Also choose a tap measure whose hook at the end is slightly loose on its rivets (this is by design), which will allow the woodworker to take inside and outside measurements.

No woodworker should be without a utility knife as well. The razor-sharp knife is useful for cutting thin material and it can also be used for cleaning out hinge mortises or scoring before making a cut with a power tool.

No matter how many power tools a woodworker may have, the chisel remains one of the most versatile tools in the wood shop today. Its likely precursor was the sharp rock used to carve wood in prehistoric times. The most commonly used chisel is the bevel-edged chisel that features a blade four to seven inches and a 25-degree bevel on three edges. The chisel's sharp-cutting edge can be guided through wood stock with a handle that has been specifically created to aid the tool in its cutting task.

Woodworkers often need to determine if their piece of stock is perfectly level (horizontal) or plumb (vertical) and the level is the tool for this job. Woodworkers most often reach for a full-length, 48-inch level that features two glass-encased bubbles on each end of the level. The other most-often used level in a woodworker's shop is the torpedo level, which is between eight and ten inches in length. This level is ideal for examining level and plumb on small objects.

Like the claw hammer, screwdrivers are a necessity to the woodworker. Consider acquiring a variety of sizes in your woodshop, including the #1, 2, 3 sizes of Phillips and Flathead, as well as several with a square head, Torx, and star drivers.

Resembling a small, round chisel, nail sets are used to sink nail heads flush or just beneath the wood's surface. A nail set allows the woodworker to sink a nail into the wood without causing a dent or bruise in the wood. Nail sets come in a variety of sizes, based on the size of the nails being driven.

Finally, every woodworker needs a block plane in his or her woodshop. A small block plane is a device used for shearing small amounts of wood away from the stock. It's also invaluable for cleaning up edges during assembly.

Safety

Like any other pursuit, safety in woodworking is mostly common sense. However, failure to follow the rules can greatly increase the chances of injury. To begin, always wear safety equipment, especially safety glasses. Avoid loose-fitting clothing and wear clothes that can protect you from flying wood chips. Before beginning a blade change on your power tools, disconnect the electricity to the power tool. Use sharp blades and bits, as a dull cutting tool can be dangerous. Always work against the cutter - a router bit or saw blade should cut into the stock not with the stock. Especially important, never reach over a blade to remove cut-offs.<bio>Safecutters Inc., provides an online store of utility knife box cutters for opening shipping boxes and shipping packages, as well as safety knives to open moving boxes and packages.
E-advertisements of woodworking services force the woodworkers to compete to survive in the market.

The question which arises here is how one under such circumstances does, effectively attract customers and start receiving profitable business.

Well, for starters, here are a few suggestions that might help: 1) Showcase your products locally in trade shows organized by different communities. In this way you will be able to get a clear idea of the popularity and prospect of salability of your product. Also, in this way you get a feedback right away so it is profitable for the medium scale businesses. Apart from this a craftsman can make a deal with bigger businesses who can sell his goods and for which he will be charged a small percentage of the sale.

2) Next, forming a network of product marketing through friends and family relatives also helps a lot. They buy the goods initially and informally advertise it for you.

3) Placing ads in the magazines read by your targeted market can work wonders because it is a very popular form of media. You can place an ad in a woodwork magazine. To make it catchy you can hire a photographer to take snaps of your products to be placed in your advertisement.

4) Though people hardly appreciate the time and effort spent on creating woodworks some buyers do have interest in such things. To attract these buyers, at local trade shows, you can set up a live demonstration exhibition.

5) You can also create online woodwork shopping websites for the online transaction of your goods. Basically, creating an online store that features you wonderful woodworking products.

Hiring a broker to sell your woodworks can also help. He can provide you clients, market information and advice you regarding the time and location for you to advertise. That's how you can market your woodwork products. <bio>Josiah Roell is involved with an online woodworking project that informs and educates the woodworking enthusiast through well-written articles.
Racking is a term used to describe a certain type of storage. It is a storage system used to create a versatile and flexible way of keeping and displaying almost anything. Many different materials can be used to make the racking, from metal to plastic and from wood to fiberglass. Basically it can be made from anything that has the strength to support the weight of the items that are meant to be kept in or on it. As you would expect racking is available in many different sizes and the one that will be perfect for you depends on what exactly you are planning to use it for. Factors to consider when buying this kind or any other type of shelving include, where the unit will be- will it be inside or outside? How much money do you want to spend on your new racking? Setting a budget is a great way of avoiding being drawn into buying something you can't afford. And lastly how much space do you have available? This is important because you want to make sure you are making the most of any spare or unused floor space and also because you don't want to find once you have ordered your unit, that it won't fit in its allocated spot.

Although wooden racks tend to be hand crafted by woodworkers and skilled carpenters it is metal racking that has been most commercially successful. It has proved popular in the home, the garage, the office, the warehouse and even in the garden. One of the best benefits of racking is the way in which the unit can be changed by simply unscrewing or unbolting the shelves and moving them up, down, left or right. This is also part of the reason why racking is useful for so long, because when you want to store different things in it you can adjust the unit to suit the new items rather than having to buy a whole new piece of furniture. Many people also say that because a racking system keeps all the contents of the unit visible it is easier and less time consuming to find what you need in it once you have it in your home and are using it.

Racking retailers do exist on the high-street but they are not specialists and you will find that most shops stocking racking will in fact be DIY shops or hardware stores. This means that even if the staff are friendly and helpful they won't be experts in solving storage problems. Neither will the staff be knowledgeable about racking in particular. For expert advice you are better off buying from a racking specialist online. There are literally hundreds of websites selling storage on the internet and you can find them by using a search engine or DIY directory. Try to find a company that has lots of information available on the homepage because this will give you peace of mind that you are dealing with a reputable company.<bio>Big Dug is your one-stop-shop for all your shelving, racking and storage needs.</bio>

The high quality finish for your project can be the crowning touch the really shows off the beauty of the wood. Completing a really fine finish takes time, skill and good quality materials. A fine finish cannot be rushed experiences has taught fine woodworkers a little patience will go a long ways towards achieving a good quality finish.

The first up the good finish is prepping the wood it must be properly sanded as a rule of thumb down to 180 to 220 grit sandpaper depending on the type of wood. Remember to always sand with the grain and not across the grain if you sand across the grain you can leave scratches that will show up once the wood has been stained, all curved surfaces Will need to be sanded by hand by starting with a heavy grit work up to a finer grit. A little trick that I've learned is to wipe the wood down with mineral spirits prior to staining this will show any scratches in the wood that normally would not show up until you apply a stain. It is also a good idea to lightly sand all sharp edges.

Once your project has been prepped you are now ready to apply the stain But I prefer to use it in oil based stain tie have not found any water based stains that come close to a good quality of oil base stain. When using any softwoods as good idea to use a wood conditioner prior to staining soft woods can make the stain appear blotchy as the stain is not absorbed evenly by the wood. The bus practiced I've found for staining is to simply use old cloth that is clean of course and apply a liberal amount of stain to work peace allow the stain to set for a few minutes And wipe off any extra with a clean cloth. Allow the stain to dry prior to finishing with a top coat. The easiest most durable top coat to apply is a polyurethane clear finish it will take several coats most likely to three to two desired finish. I prefer to apply 2 coats of polyurethane And allow to dry thoroughly and sand off any dust particles that are stuck in the clear coat and follow up with a third and final coat. Once the third code has tried I like to wet sand with 320 grit sandpaper and then buff to a fine finish <bio>Megan Cherry writes for http://www.pegandrail.com </bio>

Always be alert and know how much you are going to spend even if your 'reliable' contractor has already given you a detailed estimation of the woodwork cost. Study the charges and do homework before relying completely on him. Don't depend on your intuition to make sure your contractor has not overcharged you. It may also occur that he is focusing on purchasing low-quality and cheap materials to impress you.

For estimating the woodwork cost, some persons seek professional help from third party, depending on the extent and size of the woodwork. But before going for professional aid, check the tips of this article which will help you in judging intuitively in checking the charges estimated by your contractor.

At first be sure of the price of the materials. The costs of materials are very important as they found the base for the value of any woodwork. Cost of the materials form the chunk of the bill offered by your contractor, so check out the market rates to see whether he is overcharging you.

Have a look at the background of the laborers. You are only obliged to pay a price higher than the market rate in case your woodwork involves certified expert workers. If you find out that you are charged sky-high for laborers even when your contractor has incorporated ordinary laborers, you have the right to complain. If he is reluctant to charge you low, fire him out from your project.

Make a thorough study of the design. Even if your woodwork so complicated, it can of common design and can be easily mass produced. Check if this is the case; if it is, ensure that you are charged properly for the apparent expensive design. Seek the help of online to see for yourself.

Study the workmanship. You may be charged a higher price for every work since your contractor does his work meticulously and intricately. He may work with great precision, a single sand mark may be absent in his work and one can't find out that various pieces of wood are pasted altogether. In case you contractor works impeccably, don't worry about the higher price he has charged.

Follow these four important tips and you will get a rough idea of how and what you are charged. But don't forget that there can be differences between your estimation and that of your contractor. If you don't comprehend any part of the bill, talk with your contractor to get the reasons. Thus you can be assured that you are not ripped off your money. <bio>Josiah Roell is involved in an online woodworking project to help develop better woodworkers.
Trend Router

Routing encompasses a wide range of skills, not just in handling the router itself, but in using it to its best advantage in conjunction with various, guides, jigs and other `routing devices', as well as the extensive range of router cutters now available. Routing is also about innovation in both the methods and applications to which the router is applied and in the aesthetic and technical design that it is used to create.

The Router Most woodworkers turning to routing have some idea and experience of working with power tools. Most householders will have occasionally used a jigsaw or electric drill and will know that power tools come in a range of power ratings and capacities - the more power you have, the faster and harder you can go about the job - well that's the theory anyway! However, as if you are buying a new car, computer or washing machine, you will still want to know just what to buy to suit you and your pocket. Accordingly, the questions facing the newcomer to routing are most likely to be: How much power do I need?, What collet size do I need?, Do I need variable speed?, Do I need to buy lots of accessories?, Do I need to buy lots of cutters?

Self Assessment! How much power? - This depends on the type of work that you intend to use the router for. If you are cutting dolls house mouldings or trimming veneers or laminates, there is little point in buying a heavy duty router. It will be too heavy and clumsy for the purpose. Conversely, if you are making doors and window frames, you would not be able to remove enough material efficiently without overloading the motor. This would what is routing? The electric router is now accepted, by both amateur and professional woodworkers, as an essential tool for the workshop. cause the cutting speed to drop, resulting in a poor finish and possible premature burn-out of the motor and bearings.

Collet Capacity For many applications the strength of a cutter often depends on the diameter of the cutter shank. The thicker the cutter shank, the more wood you can remove and the deeper you can cut on any one pass, with less risk of the cutter flexing excessively or breaking. Light duty routers are generally supplied with 6.5mm (1/4") collets although some models can be fitted with an optional 8mm collet. The introduction of 8mm shanks has allowed many of the larger diameter cutters to be used in light duty routers, although particular care must be taken when using them and any manufacturers recommendations concerning cutting speed and depth of cut must be closely observed. Most medium and heavy duty routers can be fitted with alternative diameter collets of 6.35mm (1/4"), 9.5mm (3/8"), 12.7mm (1/2") and 8mm diameter, although most are supplied with only 1/4 inch or both 1/4 and 1/2 inch collets. Alternative size collets are available for most makes and models of router. Do remember that small diameter cutter shanks will flex more, with a greater risk of breakage under the increased load from a heavy duty router. Speed and Variable Speed Router spindle speeds are generally given as no-load speeds, that is the speed that the motor spindle is rotating at before the cutter enters the wood. This is generally between 18,000 and 30,000 RPM depending on the power of the router. Light duty routers will have a higher no-load speed to help compensate for their lower power. Most routing operations using cutters up to 25mm diameter, should be carried out at the maximum router speed to achieve optimum cutting efficiency.

Operations involving the use of cutters over 50mm diameter should be carried out at speeds of between 12,000 and 16,000 rpm. Variable speed routers with full wave, load compensated electronics, tend to run smoother and possibly quieter than single speed machines, resulting in reduced bearing wear and eliminating the initial jolt on start-up. They also accommodate the use of large diameter cutters at their recommended safe speed. Aluminium and plastics require routing at lower speeds to reduce overheating or melting, preventing problems such as weld-back, whereby molten waste material re-forms within the cut, or the fusion of waste particles to the cutter. Which Accessories? The few guides and accessories supplied with the router allow you to carry out various basic cutting operations such as edge trimming, moulding, and template work. However, to increase the versatility of your router it is worth considering adding further accessories to your routing workshop. The range of accessories that can be bought, includes router tables, circle and ellipse cutting jigs and decorative carving, lettering and turning attachments. Proprietary jigs and templates are also available for cutting stair-housings, joining laminated worktops and cutting dovetail joints. Alternatively many jigs and templates can be made in the workshop to suit your specific requirements, and jig making accessories, such as levers, knobs, threaded inserts and router mounting plates, are readily available. For the newcomer, the array of routing accessories is often confusing, but one of the first considerations should be an inverted router table to allow the router to be used as a stationary, rather than a hand held machine. A rigid, easily adjustable inverted router table will provide far greater accuracy, ease of use and increased safety for carrying out a wide range of routing operations.

Which Cutters?

For the beginner, it is certainly not worth buying a large selection of cutters until you know exactly which types you will use most frequently or until you are faced with a specific task. Various size straight cutters are always worth having as they serve many more applications than just cutting grooves and rebates. Used with angle guides and stepped fences, they can be used for cutting mitres, edge planing and trimming. An economic solution for the beginner is buy a basic set of cutters such as the Trend starter set. Although not all the cutters will be used as frequently as others, this will provide valuable experience of the basic range, and in selecting the most suitable cutters for specific applications in the future. <bio>Paul Disley write for http://www.powertooldirect.co.uk </bio>

With the price of everything going down lately, people who purchase collectibles may be looking at their shelves full of well-loved pieces and thinking, "They're not worth anything anymore! What will I do?" It may seem counter-intuitive, but the best thing might be to expand your collection. Just think about it: What are the smart investors doing right now on Wall Street? They are holding onto their portfolios and spending a little money to pick up some great bargains. That's what you should be doing with your collectibles, too.

"To get a great deal" is the best reason to spend money in any economy, especially when it comes to collectibles. While it may not be the best time to sell off your own collection, you may see deals now on pieces that you don't have that you would never see otherwise. A bonus to buying during a downswing is that, since you are buying items at a discount, the chances are good that your new collectibles will go up in value as the economy gets stronger.

Another reason to invest in collectibles in an economic downturn is if you've been thinking of starting a collection for someone else. If you have a daughter or niece to whom you were planning on giving a few pieces, those starter items now can be found at great prices. Often times merchants will bundle pieces together that make great starter sets and offer them at a discount. Plus, everyone knows that the most expensive time to collect is when you first start out, so now is the time to make those initial costs a bit less.

Remember the most important reason to collect anything: because it means something special to you. Can you really put a price tag on a collection if you purchased it for sentimental reasons? If your collection is making you happy then it is giving you value and no one can argue with that. Artwork that you collect because it makes you feel relaxed, for example, is like investing in your mental health. Figurines that feature different emotions or family members can memorialize events or honor loved ones while they expand your collection. Eventually, when the time comes to whittle down your collection, these items become perfect gifts for family and friends. If you've ever watched those shows where experts estimate the value of a person's antiques or collectibles, you know that most people say that it's nice to know how much it's worth, but they're not interested in selling due to family history with the item(s). A collection may have monetary value, but it all boils down to how much it means to you personally.

One of the best bonuses of collecting is the sense of community you get from talking and trading with other collectors. The internet has now given us the ability to talk to people all over the world who are interested in the same things you are. So even if you don't feel like changing the size of your collection today, communicating with other people who appreciate the things you do can improve your mood, no matter the state the economy.<bio>Melani Weber enjoys working with the woodworkers and artists whose creations are featured in the gift store where she has worked for the last 20 years.
