As a woodworker, you have a desire to create beautiful works of art. Probably one of the last things you want to think about is dust collection. But, this is a potentially important aspect for you to think about. Dust collection is a necessary part of a woodworker's life. Without it, you may be facing a lot of time dealing with a mess, an itchy rash or just the annoyance of it all. But, by taking advantage of the purchase of a dust collection network, you can minimize all of this.

Why Do You Need It?

Do you experience any of these things?

• Do your eyes, nose or throat become itchy, scratchy or irritated? • Some develop a rash from too much dust. • Do you have allergies or asthma that is aggravated by the dust in your shop? • In some very serious cases, dust can also lead to lung disease. • In even rarer cases, it has been shown to have lead to nasal cancer.

Perhaps you don't realize when you first begin your workshop, just how powerful dust from wood can be. You may want to purchase that new tool or that expensive workbench long before you consider a dust collection system. And, while this isn't something that you realize you want, it is something that you will need. Because dust collection is so very important in a wood workshop, you should have it at the very top of your to do list.

The good news is that there are some excellent products available to you to aid in your dust collection need. These products allow you to easily clean up dust, helping to remove it without causing it to fly into the air all over again. While dust collection is something you don't want to think about now, it is something that you won't want to regret later. <bio>For more information please see http://www.dust-collection-help.co.uk </bio>

Woodworking can be an enjoyable and rewarding hobby or profession. When setting up a woodworking area, it's important to stock the right tools and follow some practical safety rules to make the most of your woodworking projects.

Nearly everyone has used a hammer at some point in time. And hammers come in many shapes and sizes. The most versatile and helpful to the woodworker is the claw hammer, which features a smooth, slightly rounded finish head. Choose a hammer that is not too heavy but fits comfortably in your hand, such as a 20 ounce model.

An invaluable woodworking tool, the speed square is the quickest and easiest tool for making a square line for an end cut. The triangular-shaped measuring tool is designed to assist the woodworker in making square marks or angles on stock. It can also be used to mark any angle up to 45 degrees or measure up to six inches. Speed squares are available in 6- and 12-inch models and the aluminum model is nearly indestructible.

The 25-foot retractable tape measure is a woodworker must. Be on the lookout for certain features when choosing a tape measure. Tape measures include both standard (imperial) and metric markings. Your tape measure should also have a locking mechanism that allows you to pull out a length of tape and lock the unit so that it won't retract. Also choose a tap measure whose hook at the end is slightly loose on its rivets (this is by design), which will allow the woodworker to take inside and outside measurements.

No woodworker should be without a utility knife as well. The razor-sharp knife is useful for cutting thin material and it can also be used for cleaning out hinge mortises or scoring before making a cut with a power tool.

No matter how many power tools a woodworker may have, the chisel remains one of the most versatile tools in the wood shop today. Its likely precursor was the sharp rock used to carve wood in prehistoric times. The most commonly used chisel is the bevel-edged chisel that features a blade four to seven inches and a 25-degree bevel on three edges. The chisel's sharp-cutting edge can be guided through wood stock with a handle that has been specifically created to aid the tool in its cutting task.

Woodworkers often need to determine if their piece of stock is perfectly level (horizontal) or plumb (vertical) and the level is the tool for this job. Woodworkers most often reach for a full-length, 48-inch level that features two glass-encased bubbles on each end of the level. The other most-often used level in a woodworker's shop is the torpedo level, which is between eight and ten inches in length. This level is ideal for examining level and plumb on small objects.

Like the claw hammer, screwdrivers are a necessity to the woodworker. Consider acquiring a variety of sizes in your woodshop, including the #1, 2, 3 sizes of Phillips and Flathead, as well as several with a square head, Torx, and star drivers.

Resembling a small, round chisel, nail sets are used to sink nail heads flush or just beneath the wood's surface. A nail set allows the woodworker to sink a nail into the wood without causing a dent or bruise in the wood. Nail sets come in a variety of sizes, based on the size of the nails being driven.

Finally, every woodworker needs a block plane in his or her woodshop. A small block plane is a device used for shearing small amounts of wood away from the stock. It's also invaluable for cleaning up edges during assembly.

Safety

Like any other pursuit, safety in woodworking is mostly common sense. However, failure to follow the rules can greatly increase the chances of injury. To begin, always wear safety equipment, especially safety glasses. Avoid loose-fitting clothing and wear clothes that can protect you from flying wood chips. Before beginning a blade change on your power tools, disconnect the electricity to the power tool. Use sharp blades and bits, as a dull cutting tool can be dangerous. Always work against the cutter - a router bit or saw blade should cut into the stock not with the stock. Especially important, never reach over a blade to remove cut-offs.<bio>Safecutters Inc., provides an online store of utility knife box cutters for opening shipping boxes and shipping packages, as well as safety knives to open moving boxes and packages.
Use a magazine rack to keep all that reading material in order. A quality magazine rack can add a touch of elegance to any living room or library. Though magazines are usually transitory and non-literary in nature, when kept in a handsome rack they take on an air of sophistication.

A magazine rack also serves a practical purpose: It gives you a place to keep all your magazines! Some people use a coffee table or an end table for this, but those pieces of furniture are often occupied by other things, too. A magazine rack is dedicated to just one task, though if the rack is covered, it can serve as a sort of end table as well.

As with so many furniture items, the question is: To build or to buy? Magazine racks are actually fairly simple to build and are often one of the first projects that a beginning woodworker attempts. A homemade magazine rack can be especially aesthetically pleasing in a andquot;rusticandquot; setting such as a cabin or cottage; it may not fit in quite as well with modern home decor, unless you're a particularly skilled woodworker.

When it comes to buying one, there are many options, depending mostly on how much money you want to spend. Magazine racks don't generally get a lot of wear and tear, so you needn't shell out big bucks for the finest imported mahoganies or anything like that. But at the same time, you want something that will complement your decor and look nice by itself. Spend accordingly.

One very useful option is the combination magazine rack and lamp. This is essentially three items in one. On the bottom is the standard magazine rack. It's covered, though, making it a small table. And coming out of the table is a built-in lamp. This is a great piece to have next to your favorite easy chair, perfect for holding reading material, remote controls and snacks. <bio>http://www.magazineholderhut.com is packed with information on chrome magazine racks and bathroom magazine racks </bio>

If you want to set up a woodworking shop quickly and easily, just find a distributor of Jet power tools. These top quality woodworking and metalworking tools are found at over 9,000 dealers around the world.

The unique feature of Jet tools is that they are not manufactured in only one place, but in different parts of the world, depending on what specialties the engineers in that part of the world are experts in. They use the best technology available and combine it with materials from specific regions that supply the best of that material.

Jet power tools are noted for their extensive selection of accessories for each tool. Their power saws have the Cyclone Dust Collector and the Parallel clamps, each of which make working with the power saw cleaner, easier and more efficient. Jet backs all of their power tools with warranties and the many authorized Jet distributors will stand behind these warranties. You can have your Jet power tools maintained or serviced at any of the Jet service centers, which are located all around the world. There is never a problem with spare parts; replacement parts and spare parts are carried by all of these service centers and there is a $3million inventory of parts at any one time.

Jet is the proud recipient of many awards that are granted by the power tool industry. These awards are not lightly bestowed: contenders are compared on every quality and category and price range among all the brands around the world. Magazines that specialize in material for the woodworker, either professional or hobbyist, consistently rate Jet tools as the best brand in the market.

Knowing you have the best quality on the market is assuring, but the variety of tools that Jet offers also makes any job easy for the woodworker. The Jet lathe, the Jet table saw and the Jet Long Bed Jointer are the most popular power tools of the line, and the easiest and most convenient to use.

A specialized item that may interest a woodworker is the portable horizontal band saw. A small saw for big jobs, its light weight and portability make it perfect for bringing to a job site. Adjusting the blades to 45 or 60 degree angles makes it perfect for miter cuts. It has a bi-metal blade that makes it extremely durable and thus able to handle jobs that usually would require a bigger saw.

You can turn your horizontal band saw into a multi-use table saw by using the option floor stand.

Jet wants you to be able to get the most use and enjoyment out of their power tools, so each one of them has a training video in their training series called "Shopclass Series". Your Jet distributor can provide you with the list of titles of these videos to help yo with just about any job. <bio>Greg Hansward works normally for http://www.insidewoodworking.com , a web page with information about automotive tools and portable power tools.
There are many beautiful things that are made out of wood and these beautiful wood crafts are the results of the talented woodworker. Woodworking is a beautiful art, although it may not be delicate as some artwork is. Creating beautiful things out of logs of wood and wooden boards it truly a wonderful and beautiful form of art that takes talent.

Being able to take a meaningless piece of wood and turning it into a beautiful artwork is what fuels the passion of the woodworker. Woodworking can be a very fulfilling hobby and hours of recreation can be found if one has woodworking as a hobby. The following are some reasons that woodworking is such a wonderful hobby to have.

First of all you will find that woodworking is not only a hobby that brings about financial benefits, but there is more to this hobby than that. People who do woodworking as a hobby do it for more than the money. Woodworking is a pleasure and is a hobby that brings about great personal satisfaction. Creating something gives people a feeling of meaning that is more important than financial gain. While it may be hard to actually make a full-time income doing woodworking, having it as a hobby allows people to enjoy their woodworking without having to worry about bringing in profit for their work.

Secondly you will find that a hobby of woodworking does not always mean that you are the one doing the work. If you do not have the talent or time to do the actual woodworking work then you may enjoy collecting woodwork that has been made by others as well. You may find fulfillment building beautiful collections of woodwork and maybe you will enjoy restoring woodwork that has already been made by others.

Thirdly you will find that you can actually save some money if you have woodworking as a hobby. Even if you are not making money with your woodworking hobby, you may find that you can save some money instead. You may be able to start making things that you would have had to buy, which will save you money, as well as giving you the satisfaction of knowing that you created that with your own hands.

Woodworking as a hobby can be relaxing and fun, and there is definitely more to it than a way to earn money. If you enjoy just taking the time to work with wood and create new things then you will enjoy your hobby of woodworking. <bio>Dorothy Kimble is a staff writer at http://www.crafts-digest.com and is an occasional contributor to several other websites, including http://www.recreation-digest.com. </bio>

Woodworking is responsible for lots of the houses, furniture and other wooden materials and articles used in homes and office surroundings. Simply defined, woodworking is the art or craft (of which it seems more like magic) of creating things out of wood. Woodworking is usually done by a carpenter but nowadays anyone can do it, it can be learned to a point in a very short period of time and is a very enjoyable pass time.

Woodworking is an art and while it may come easy for carpenters to build other people's construction requirements, most people have a hard time building even a simple four sided cabinet. Woodworking is an acquired skill and most carpenters/ <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/woodworkers" rel="tag">woodworkers learned the skill early on in life. Being able to create quality and decorative woodworks is really a gift which not all people are able to do very easily.

The art of woodworking used to be done manually by skilled carpenters and the likes. However, new technological advancements now allow for the discovery of new machines that have made woodworking less manual, more modern and more creative and efficient (plus a heck of a lot more accurate). Instead of shaping wood materials in man's creative but flaw full hands, the woodworkers now make use several machines to shape the wooden product they want to make.

A beginning woodworker should have the necessary tools and supplies even if he is just starting out in his craft. Woodworking power tools can be quite tempting but those who don't have the budget for such gadgets should stick with the hand woodworking tools.

The modernization of woodworking has lifted the woodworking art to a new level. Modern woodworking tools and equipment led to the mushrooming of do it yourself shops that offer wooden materials, project designs for specific woodwork and the corresponding tools and equipment that can be used by the aspiring woodworker.

Both aspiring and expert woodworkers should be aware of the important terminologies used in woodworking. One often-used term is milling, which is the use of a mill for grinding a board. Woodworkers should know that board-feet isn't a kind of furniture but it is a standard measurement when selling rough lumber in the United States. On the other hand, yield doesn't refer to harvest of agricultural products but it is the term given to denote the efficiency of milling unprocessed lumber. Waste is a common result when milling rough wood so when you are said to have accomplished a hundred percent yield, it means you have milled the rough lumber without producing any waste at all.

Woodworking is also synonymous with joints so you should know the different kinds of joints. A dovetail joint is a stable and sturdy joint for a woodworking project. Dovetail joints can be done with the use of a scroll saw or even by hand. What matters is you know the technique of creating dovetails and you are patient and skillful. Another type of joint is the mortise and tenon joint, a kind of woodworking joint popularly used in ships. It is also a sturdy joint and a project using this kind of joint will definitely be a showcase of your woodworking prowess.

There are several terms used in woodworking which every woodworker should know. If you aren't aware of them then you must do some research or talk to expert woodworkers as you may learn a lot from them.

When starting out, choose a workbench that fits the place where you do your woodworking projects. A workbench with a wood top would be ideal. The size of the workbench also depends on the type of woodworking projects you intend to do in the future. If it is just for crafting toys then a small bench would be ideal. <bio>Byron Branfield All Wood Working http://www.all-wood-working.com </bio>

Woodworking may just be a hobby to some people but it can also become a money-earning hobby and a small business later on. Most entrepreneurs started their businesses as hobbies but are now full pledged business people.

The good thing about turning a hobby into a money-making venture is that it doesn't seem like work at all because you love doing what you do. When you love what you are doing, it makes things easier and more profitable financial and emotionally.

Woodworking is a hobby that can be turned into a business venture. Woodworking is the art of creating things that are decorative and functional using wood as a material. It is a very labor-intensive occupation but the use of modern techniques and equipment lighten the load a bit.

Creating cabinets and furniture through woodworking can be a possible money-earner because people love to have wooden items in their homes because it brings memories of country life and coziness. Those who are starting out in woodworking can take advantage of shops selling do it yourself wooden products. There are also shops selling woodworking kits which includes the pre-cut materials as well as step by step instructions on how to do the project.

You can start a woodworking hobby with simple projects that require simple and inexpensive hand tools. However, a woodworker who wants to do more complicated wooden projects and wants to move on to become a better woodworker should start buying woodworking tools. The search for woodworking tools shouldn't be that hard because there are vendors both on the internet and in actual shops who sell woodworking tools at reasonable prices.

You should be very careful and informed when choosing woodworking tools because you don't want to waste your money and effort on useless tools that aren't useful and important for the projects you will do. Talk to experienced woodworkers about the tools that are most useful in the industry, their present market value and their ability to carry out big projects.

You can go from hardware to other stores selling woodworking tools. However, an easy way to get these tools would be through the internet. Internet shops not only offer a list of available woodworking tools but they also offer some articles on the proper woodworking tools to buy especially for a beginner. There are also sites that give reviews on woodworking tools. Internet shops also offer different brands and prices of woodworking tools like saws and chisels.

You must take stock of what projects you will be doing in the future because it will give you an idea of what woodworking tools to buy. The belief that the more expensive the tool, the better its performance may be true but if you are new to woodworking and are just practicing, the best tools aren't a necessity. Of course, if you think you will do woodworking for a longer time and might consider this as a permanent hobby or business then you should buy quality tools at the best possible prices.

To start with, you need to have a drill which you can use for a number of projects. A cordless drill would be ideal but isn't recommended for those just starting in woodworking because it is expensive. You will also need a circular saw for basic cutting requirements. A driller and a good saw will enable you to do a variety of projects.

A wooden project will always require sanding so it is advisable to have a finishing sander which you can use to smooth surfaces as well as the edges of some wooden projects. It is also ideal to buy a quality table saw which can withstand the pressures of ripping wood. A common tool used by woodworkers for cutting the edge of a wood as well as molding is the router.

Wooden projects will require a lot of wooden pieces that need to be combined or joined. To be able to do this, you should also buy a biscuit joiner. This tool is important in hastening a project's assembly.

There are more tools that would be useful to you in the future, depending on the type of projects you will be doing. You should only buy the really important ones which can be used in different small or start-up projects. Remember that when buying woodworking tools for a beginner; just choose a few pieces that are inexpensive. <bio>Mohamed Rabea - Online Tips and Resources! http://www.retractable-awning-guide.info http://www.retractableawning-now.info </bio>

A table saw can cut up wood adequately but tenon making necessitates a fixture. Drilling holes in line on the drill press demans a fence. You can Bandsaw circles free hand. If you want two of them the same diameter, you'll need a jig.

Hand tools are just as reliant on jigs. A corner chisel needs a guide to chisel a square mortise corner. Most cutting tools require assistance to achieve their chosen task. Routers are the worst-case situation -- they are purely needy and dependent on support.

You might think that the key to getting control of the router is difficult. Instinctively, you would think a spinning tool enclosed in a metal case is not good for jigs and fixtures, but it is.

Commercial jigs are available, as some experts suggest. Can you make your own? If done correctly, they are better than most commercial jigs and cost a lot less. You can make better the jig after building your first one. As this evolution continues, your work improves. Often, you find more uses for the same jig.

The point is jigs aid you to become a quality woodworker. Besides, your skills will increase as you make woodworking jigs!

A good woodworking jig allows quick set-ups, and efficient cuttings. With a better-quality jig, few mistakes are possible and not much skill is necessary for good results. Can you ask for more?

Some jigs take time to make. Once finished, you can use them repeatedly over a period of years. This is an excellent reason to use first-rate materials and take your time to align the pieces.

Let's discuss a couple of the woodworking jigs that you can make. These jigs are superior to Commercial Jigs.

Mortise Jig

Why bother with a mortise jig? The mortise and tenon is the best joint for furniture. The joint resists tension and twist, and work great in compression and shear. In addition, registration of your joint is perfect.

Some people use hand chisels or a drill press with hollow square chisels. For the most precise and repeatable mortises, you should consider a mortise jig. For a perfect fit, you want the tenon to fit the mortise exactly.

The Mortise Jig gives excellent results without compromising quality. The mortise and tenon joint will last for a lifetime. You can make mortises of nearly any length, width or depth. Moreover, they are repeatable for multiple cuts.

How does the mortise jig work?
The beauty of this system is simplicity.
The set up is quick.
The cuttings are efficient.
It supports the workpiece in all directions.
It locks in the router to remove only the mortise needed.
It is repeatable for several pieces, such as multiple drawers' cavities on each side of a desk.
It makes the joint uniform and strong.

Tenon Jig

A Tenon Jig is easy to make. It provides precise four-faced tenons of nearly any length and width. It has fewer parts than the Mortise Jig, yet is just as precise.

With a Tenon Jig, the cutting results are excellent, the process fast, and guaranteed safety. All that you need is a little patience to make a Tenon Jig. Along with the Mortise Jig, you can instantly have a mortise and tenon joint that fits snugly and aligns correctly.

Using these two woodworking jigs, you can craft precise mortise and tenon joints in less time than any other method. You get accurate alignment for both parts. Can you ask for more?

You can build many woodworking jigs. Examples: Baby Crib Spindles Jig, Circle Cutting Jig, Edge Guides, Inlay Jig and Templates, Lapping Jig, Notching Jig, and Router Insert Plate Jig and Template, just to name a few.

You will gain confidence with making jigs. It gives you more flexibility with your projects. With a little practice, you can't go wrong!

Have fun making Great Woodworking Jigs with safety in mind!

For more information on Woodworking Jigs, including pictures and tips, please visit http://www.provenwoodworking.com/woodworking-jigs.html<bio>Jim is a woodworker with over 36 years of experience.
The garage. It's where some people park their cars and keep a few spare items on sparse shelves. For most of us, it's a place where cars battle junk, debris and miscellaneous stuff for space. Most of us have garages that are completely full of random storage items, with a space carved out for the car.

Because of this, a booming industry has sprung up centered around storage cabinets and other organizational tools.

Storage cabinets for the garage are essentially the same shape and size as indoor cupboards and bookshelves, only more durable and intended for tough items like tools and paint buckets.

Do you need storage cabinets in your garage? First consider whether all that junk can be dealt with in some other way -- either disposed of (or donated), or put into storage bins and cardboard boxes. Storage cabinets are generally for things you actually use -- don't let the word andquot;storageandquot; mislead you. These cabinets should be where items like paintbrushes and screwdrivers are kept, not where you shove things you don't plan to use again.

If you're a regular woodworker, auto-tinkerer or do-it-yourselfer, you've probably accumulated a lot of tools related to your hobbies. Storage cabinets can be a stylish way of organizing them, more aesthetically pleasing than a big steel toolbox.

Cabinets, along with proper lighting (a rarity in a garage), goes a long way toward making your workspace look clean and inviting. It's safer, too, when all your andquot;stuffandquot; is put away instead of left lying on a workbench or on the ground.

Once you've decided to get storage cabinets, you can either build them yourself or have them installed. Cabinets aren't always easy to build, though, and they can be purchased pre-built (or even custom-made) relatively cheaply from several online outlets and at home improvement stores. <bio>Milton Felton writes for http://www.storageshedhut.com, a website packed with information on Residential Storage Sheds and Metal Garden Storage Sheds </bio>

There are a lot of woodworking tools ranging from the manual tools to the most modern power tools. A combination of the traditional tools and modern technology tools is important for a woodworker to invest in order to produce high quality products.

Woodworking is a craft of creating furniture or anything that is made of wood. The most common types of wood used for woodworking are hardwood, softwood, and the most recent man made materials like MDF and plywood. While traditional hand tools can execute well for woodworking, the need for power tools and modern equipments are also vital for further productivity and convenience.

Traditional woodworkers normally use manual hand tools as well as simple measuring tools. In spite of that, they can accurately create beautiful furniture. However, traditional skills and tools require much more time to complete a project. With this concern, many woodworkers have shifted to utilizing modern woodworking machines and more accurate measuring tools. These modern tools and machines offer woodworkers ease of doing even the toughest projects in less time. With these features, woodworkers can perform with increased productivity and greater precision.

It is a fact that woodworkers must have the proper tools whether it is hand tools or power tools so that outstanding wood crafts can be built. It is also vital that they learn the proper way of using these tools. Below are some of the essential tools needed for woodworking shops. We start with the most basic to the most hi-end power tools which a woodworker ought to have.

Hammers

Hammers are mostly used by traditional woodworkers. This tool is a general woodworking tool and is necessary especially when applying nails for crafting furniture. This can also be used in making jigs for your workshop. For quality woodworking, a small dead-blow hammer having a weight of one to two pounds is recommended. A rubber mallet hammer is also needed for accomplishing finishing touches crucial to avoiding scratches on the wood.

Hand Plane

Hand plane tools are frequently manipulated to remove small wood surpluses in finishing cuts of wood. This tool can also be adjusted depending on the required cut. It can be used to take away extra glue from the wood joints for a smoother finishing.

Hand Saw

Although there are power tools for cutting wood, it is still best if you have a hand saw. This tool is very flexible and can do a lot of general cutting requirements. It can be utilized to cut braces or complete some trimming.

Level

This tool is substantially functional for hanging cabinets and tool holders.

Screwdrivers

Screwdrivers are not only valuable to woodworking but they are versatile tools, as well. Although rarely used in woodworking applications, screwdrivers are still an indispensable tool for a workshop. They are ideal for adjusting or tightening other power tools and can also be used in fixing screws in furniture and cabinetry.

Chisels

Even if you have the most advanced power tools, there will always be a project that will necessitate the application of chisels. These tools are available in different sizes and are good for multi purpose treatments. They are just right for rounding corners, glue removal, as a scraper, and a lot more functions.

Table Saw

Generally, table saws are the heavily exploited among all machines in a woodworking shop. These machines are significantly advantageous in cutting large quantities and sizes of wood pieces in less time. This too is considered the backbone of a woodworking shop, so make sure to purchase the best which would last for long years.

Band Saw

These types of saw machines are great for accurately cutting curves and intricate forms of cuts.

Radial Arm Saw

This tool is handled for manifold cutting applications such as cross cutting, stock ripping, and bevel cutting. These are joined by miters, rabbets, and dadoes. It can also be applied as a guide for routers.

Power Drill

A power drill is elemental and has the power for most drilling job. This tool is handy and is useful for drilling hard to reach areas of a project, as well. This power tool comes with a modifiable speed.

Drill Press

The drill press can be employed for drilling holes in stocks of wood with precision. This machine comes with adjustable clamps which hold the stock into place. Drill press machines can either be for table tops or floors.

Random Orbital Sander

The orbital sander can perform sanding with random motion and thus, reduces sanding markings as compared to palm sanders. The sanding disks can be effortlessly replaced with proper grits required for a task.<bio>For more information on Essential Wood Working Tools please visit our website.</bio>

In the good old days of highly skilled craftsman only real wood was considered for any trim work or for furniture building. Over the years many wood substitutes and plastics have bee introduced for trim and furniture building. Terms like particle board and even plywood have been four letter words for the true woodworker and no quality furniture builder would even consider using anything but good old natural wood for the top line of furniture. Things have changed recently although good quality furniture like end tables and coat racks are still made from natural wood some of the new wood substitutes are actually better than wood in certain cases.

I am not sure anyone actually enjoys painting the outside of their house especially when it comes to painting intricate trim, up the ladder down the ladder move the ladder repeat. Well today PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a great substitute it will not absorb water or rot and can be purchased with a pressed in wood grain look if your trim color is white you can simply attach the PVC boards and you are done no painting no paint peeling no repainting every few years no need to replace do to rot ever the only two drawbacks are price and that PVC will contact and expand more than wood. The price factor is more than compensated for by reduced maintenance costs and painting.

Engineered woods we are all familiar with like plywood and OSB board have been used for many years and have their place but a new engineered wood or compressed fiberboard is made from wood fibers and a rein that is heated and compressed this procedure basically waterproofs the wood making it ideal for exterior trim however it still needs to be painted but is far better than traditional Cedar or Pine for exterior trim work.

A combination of wood and plastic is evident in the new composite these are created by utilizing scrap wood fibers and adding plastics and a bonding resin this makes the composite very strong waterproof and it can be machine just like traditional wood with a router or sanded to fit just like traditional wood trim. The big drawback to any of these engineered type of wood substitutes is they do not convey the feel of wood the natural wood grains cannot be reproduced but if you are painting the trim anyways it will not mater for fine furniture natural wood is still the way to go. <bio>Megan Cherry writes articles of interest for http://www.pegandrail.com. </bio>

For commencing you journey of selecting the correct tools, read this article which focuses on buying tips for saws, chisels and squares which are the primary tools of woodworking.

• To start with, chisel is the most traditional and important of all hand tools for every woodworker. Chisel is great in cutting the edges of innumerable sturdy materials like wood, metal or stone. When buying a chisel, you should emphasize on two things- the fit of the chisel's handle and the quality of steel. Many wood carvers and craftsmen go for the Japanese chisels particularly those that are of blue steel. You can opt for the boxwood handles resembling the shape of octagon. For getting a tighter grip. Above all, check that the steel is sharpened and honed accurately. You may take the aid of any professionals to get rid of any accidents.

• When you are deciding on buying squares, remember that extremely high precision and accuracy are the key words for squares as they act as guides in measurement in any kind of woodworking plan. The perfect is 0.003 inches or less. If you feel you are convenient with, you can purchase even the 3-4 inches long squares.

• In woodworking, an array of saws is used and the functions differ slightly with each tool. For any home repairing project, the trim saw with teeth on opposite sides of the blade is commonly used being the ideal one for repairing works.

I know all you want is to have a unique design. But for carrying out your dream project you are in need for the correct tools and equipments. And don't consider these tools as just machines, they mean more than that. Maintain them and take care of them properly. Check them, sharpen, and hone them on regular basis. Thus not only you will get value for money but also avoid accidents while doing you favorite past time- woodworking. <bio>Josiah Roell is involved with an online woodworking project that informs and educates the woodworking enthusiast through well-written articles.
I get the question a lot lately about cutting dado's and grooves for larger projects such as shelves. If you are a beginner woodworker, you spend a lot of time just trying to figure out which tool you need to build the project you are interested in. It's nice if you have someone there with you to ask your questions to, but it does not always work that way. If you go to a website to purchase the tools, you probably will not be able to speak to someone knowledgeable about how to make a part or cut a certain type of joint. The one question I get asked about a lot pertains to router tables. A lot of people want to use the table to cut the larger grooves to hold the horizontal shelf portion for a book case. Usually these items are longer, averaging about 72 inches in length. Most router tables are only about 30 to 35" long.

The problem you run into is that the project is longer than the table and you cannot support the work piece. This is a common problem, so you're not alone. Unless you work in a cabinet shop, you are going to have to figure out a way to support your work piece. You can always go out and by a roller stand for the support. I recommend setting up some sort of bench stand. Even boxes that help hold your work piece have worked. The whole idea is to make something work and then take it apart. Again this is very common.

Cutting the grooves is left best to two different tools. The first is the table saw. You really need to have a dado blade set up in the table saw to do a decent job that will not take you all day. The table saw allows you to cut the grooves in one or two passes. Again because the pieces are larger you will have to fashion some sort of support. The other tool you can use is a handheld router. You will need an edge guide for this method. An edge guide is a nice tool that is basically a straight edge with a clamp built into each end. You can even substitute a straight piece of wood if you do not have an edge guide. You will want to install a straight bit into your router and line up the edge of the cutter with a line you have drawn on your project. Next clamp down your edge guide so that your routers base plate will move along the cut line as you have it drawn. It only takes one complete cut before you will be flying through this type of joint. The time is spent in the setup and in figuring out how you want to make the cut. Make sure you only take the stock out in small bites so as not to bog down the router. This is better for the tool and for your router bits. <bio>Tony Scorch is a contributing editor to Router Table Depot.
Biscuits you can't eat? If you are talking about woodworking, this is true. If a woodworker wants to closely join two pieces of wood, he will use "wood biscuits" to do so. They are discs that are cut thinly to fit into a groove on each of the pieces to be joined. Using glue alone to join the boards or pieces would not give enough strength. Wooden pegs or dowels used to be used, but biscuits are stronger and easier to use, especially if you use a biscuit joiner. The biscuit joiner cuts the grooves in each side of the wood; the biscuit is covered with glue and inserted in the grooves, giving a strong joint.

Biscuits are strong and will hold in situations where glue alone will not. Today, these biscuits are made of compressed wood, usually from wood shavings. Once it is inserted into the grooves, it will expand to fit the slot, and make the joint good and tight.

Biscuits are very thin, less than a fourteenth of an inch thick, so they are just about invisible once they are installed. They come in three standard sizes: Number 0 is 5/8" wide X 3/4" long; Number 10 is 3/4" wide X 2 1/8" long and Number 20 is 1" wide X 2 3/8" long. There are other sizes, but those are the most common.

How can you tell which is the right size? Use the largest one that will work in your project. This will give more strength and stability to the project, since the thinner it is, the less strength it will add. Wood biscuits are most commonly used when you are doing edge to edge joints, such as in tables or miter joints, as in picture frames or molding. They are also used in making drawers to strengthen the corners of the drawers. If you are building a book shelf, you will put in a T joint, and adding wood biscuits will give the shelf more stability.

There are some things you need to know if you are going to be using biscuits in your woodworking. They have to be carefully stored in a clean dry container, since they are designed to expand when exposed to moisture. Make sure the biscuit will fit the wood being joined before you put on the glue and put the biscuit in. This is called "dry fitting" and lets you know the biscuit will work; if you put it in and it is the wrong size, you will have a mess with the glue and perhaps not get it out easily.

You can obtain wood biscuits at hardware or home improvement stores, or, like just about anything else, on the Internet. <bio>Linden Walhard frequently produces newsletters on topics dealing with machinery and power tools. Working on his detailed publications like http://www.insidewoodworking.com/wowo/019.html ,the writer proofed his skill on information much like wood working tools. </bio>

Have you ever dreamed of being handy in your own home? Have you ever hoped that one of these days, you would not only be able to fix or refurbish old tables and chairs, cabinets, doors, and other fixtures whenever they get broken or need a serious makeover? Have you ever wanted to be able to build new things with wood so that you can replace your old stuff at home without burning a hole in your pocket, or make something extra for your efforts by accepting made-to-order wood-based products? Whether your motivation is savings, self-satisfaction, or dollars and cents, what you want to become is a good woodworking craftsman.

To become one, you first need to have the right tools for the job. This is not to say, of course, that you need to max out your credit cards or spend your life's savings to buy all the tools that you see on the catalogs or brochures. Start with the basics. A good tip to follow when you are just about to embark on your adventure in woodworking is this:

=95 Start with a simple project, e.g., a birdhouse. Do not immediately embark on a complex project just because you can already imagine how good it will look when you are done with it. You may end up getting frustrated on your first try and forget about woodworking altogether.

=95 Once you have decided what project you will do, check out the materials and tools you will need for it. The Internet is full of designs and their corresponding bills of quantities as well as tools needed which you can download and print as a reference.

=95 Once you have completed your first project, move on to the next one that requires the same tools. This will allow you to gain more familiarity with your tools. When you are very familiar with your tools, you can then move on to other projects that will require you to have a new tool or two. Over time you will find that you have slowly built up your tools and that you have progressed steadily towards more and more complex projects.

Aside from having the right tools, a good woodworker needs to be intimate with the materials he uses (through research, learning from others, and personal experience) and how to make the most out of their characteristics to build or create the best possible wooden items for his personal satisfaction as well as commercial objectives. For example, you need to know what kind of wood is best for outdoor projects and which ones are for indoor projects. There are wood types that are better suited for constantly changing weather conditions, and there are those that require stable climate conditions and minimal exposure to the elements. Another example is for jointing conditions, i.e., parallel jointing (or jointing of two pieces of wood along their long grain side) is far stronger than perpendicular jointing (or jointing between two pieces of would where one is jointed at the short grain side). <bio>Tony Scorch is a contributing editor to Router Table Depot.
Space is limited in my garden raised beds, so I have to garden vertically when I can and make use of every square inch. This year, I decided that squash and cucumbers would share a 4'x8' bed. The cucumbers would need room to grow and I needed to build a trellis.

If you're looking for a fancy trellis made by a woodworker or someone who can bend and twist wrought iron to make art, then you'll have to look elsewhere. This is a quick and easy trellis made from wood and twine.

The posts are 1x2's. You could use 2x4s but 1x2s are cheaper and they're strong enough to support the weight of most veggies so why not save a few dollars. You'll need two 1x2s to use as posts and one as a cross piece that goes across the top.

I avoid the whole old pressure treated wood (CCA) vs. new pressure treated wood (ACQ) in the garden argument by using regular lumber. It's going to rot in a few years, but at $1.88 for an 8 foot 1x2, I'd rather replace the wood instead of worrying about chemicals leaching into the soil. Will they or won't they? That's a question for someone else.

Each post should be buried at least 18" deep or if you're building a trellis that will go inside a raised bed like mine, then you can secure it to the frame with 2 more screws. Remember that you'll want the two posts to be the same height so that the cross piece is level. A laser level is a great tool to easily accomplish this. If you don't have a laser level then place the cross piece on top and use a regular bubble level. Use a hammer to slowly tap the posts into the ground. If you keep knocking the cross piece off, then duct tape it. Once you're level, use two 3 inch galvanized screws to secure each joint. If you're worried about the wood cracking, then pre-drill your holes.

Now measure and make pencil marks one foot apart going down from the top and then along the cross piece. Partially drill a short screw with a large head (or add a washer) into each mark. These screws are for attaching your twine. Tie a knot around the first screw and then screw it in the rest of the way so that the twine is secure. Fasten the string going horizontally across the trellis and then going vertically, screwing the screws in as you go. When going from top to bottom, tie a knot in the twine every place that it crosses the horizontals.

After enjoying a nice harvest of cucumbers this summer, I was very happy with the results of this garden project. As I said before, my trellis may not look good enough for a gardening magazine but it sure did the job. <bio>Anthony Tripodi is a garden blogger from New Jersey and when he's not in his garden you can find him posting about Building A Garden Trellis, Composting and Growing Vegetables at http://compostbin.blogspot.com </bio>
