Any horse racing lover worth his or her weight knows about Churchill Downs. This legendary track is rich with memorable horse racing moments. The track was and is home to top horses from all over the country--even the world. To say that the horse racing action at Churchill Downs is loved by all would be a grave understatement. In the world of horse racing, Churchill Downs is a masterpiece.

Churchill Downs has a slow beginning. The famed Kentucky Jockey Club was formed in 1809. However, some 70 years would pass before the first glorious race at Churchill Downs would actually take place. Even the most casual of horse racing fans are familiar with the Triple Crown. One of the Triple Crown races, the Kentucky Derby, is held each year at Churchill Downs. At a time when race relations in the USA were not the best, it was a bit ironic that jockey Oliver Lewis who was an African American won the very first Kentucky Derby.

Back in 1883, the name "Churchill Downs" first appeared in a newspaper article. However, it would take until 1937 for the track to officially incorporate the soon to be legendary name. To raise fund for the track, Clark--who decided on the final spot for the track--sold 320 memberships to Churchill Downs. These memberships we sold at the whopping cost of $100 each. At the time, $100 was a good deal of money.

Today, the Churchill Downs is owned and operated by Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI). They run many horse racing tracks around the country, including: Churchill Downs, Arlington Park, Calder Race Course, Ellis Park, Fair Grounds Race Course and Hoosier Park. All of these tracks have one thing in common--they are great horse racing tracks.

Did you know that the Kentucky Derby was first televised in 1952? That's when the famous race really got a boost. It was the 77th running of the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Derby has always been a solid race, and today it's one of the biggest. Each year the purse is normally $1,000,000 to $2,000,000. Popular and legendary horse, Smarty Jones, won the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs back in 2004. It was special in that the purse, some $6,000,000, was double the amount in 2005. It just shows you what an exciting horse can do for the sport.

The Churchill Downs is rich in history. If you have never visiting Churchill Downs, try and make it some day. Betting on the races at Churchill Downs are exciting whether you are there in person or not. <bio>Links must be included and working when clicked to use this article. http://www.advantagesportsbetting.com/horse-wagering.htm http://www.bettingonhorse.com http://www.bettingonhorse.com/category/horse-betting/ </bio>

If you have read my other articles, you understand that you have to be the Leader of the Pack. This should take place by structured obedience training, by real life dog training and by everyday real life living.

One of the many ways to show your dog that you are his leader occurs when you feed him everyday. With many families, feeding their dogs is an act of servitude.

I bet many of you didn't realize that, did you?

Why not let the act of feeding your dog help change the way your dog looks at you? Here is what I do with my dogs and what I recommend to my Winston-Salem dog training clients.

1. Always run your hands through the dog food. I like for my scent to be all over his food. Why? In the wild, the Leader of the Pack is always the first to eat. By putting your scent on his food, we are teaching our dog that we are the leader. Our dog will eat only after we have finished with it.

2. I don't just put the food down for him to eat. I will hold it and make him do some form of obedience for it before he eats. This can be sitting, laying down or just standing their being calm. Many dogs are so excited to eat and devour their food, it becomes a frantic process. I purposely slow down the event. I am showing my dog I am in the lead position. By doing this, you are also giving your dog mental stimulation in this process by making him relax and be patient. This is a mental exercise which is just as important as physical exercise for a well rounded dog.

3. I also make sure I praise him for good behavior and I make sure I always win. I never give in without getting the respect the Leader of the Pack deserves. If you do give in, you are just showing your dog you are not his leader, that you are pretending to be. Nothing good can happen in this situation.

You have to be consistent with all aspects of training in the obedience setting and in real life. If you do this, you and your dog will explore a totally new relationship together. You as his leader. Your dog as willing follower. Believe it or not, you dog will be much happier with this relationship.

That's all we need to discuss right now! If you have a food aggressive dog you must contact a dog training professional before you attempt this; but, this should be a relatively safe event as long as you are not trying to remove his food while eating.

Note: Jim Hodges is a certified master dog trainer training dogs in Winston Salem, NC. He also trains dogs from other areas of the country via his North Carolina Residency Dog Training Program. The information he shares is from his many years of training and observing/studying dog behavior.<bio>Do you want to become the Leader of your Pack?
Audio equipment can be expensive, especially if you purchase a new head unit, amplifiers and speakers. And don't forget installation. However, there are ways to cut costs and still purchase top-of-the-line audio equipment. The secret is to know where to look. In this article we will discuss where you can get your hands on high quality, audio equipment at discounted prices.

Online discount stores: There are many great places online to find discounted audio equipment. One of these places is online. Because online stores have very little overhead, they can afford to sell their equipment cheaper. You can find these stores by surfing the web and comparing prices. This is much easier and much less expensive to do on the internet, and then it is if you went offline. You don't have to leave your house and with a few hours of dedicated research, you can find awesome prices in no time.

Second Hand: You may also go the second-hand route. This simply involves purchasing equipment that someone has already used. Of course you run the risk of some parts being missing, and the equipment is likely to look a little bit worn. However, the deep discount that you receive may more then make up for it. To provide a little bit of protection, try purchasing any second-hand equipment from an online store that provides user feedback, or a money back guarantee. This way you can gage whether or not a seller has a history of selling crap. Also, always ask to see a picture.

If you purchase second-hand equipment offline, at least you will have an opportunity to look at the equipment and see if it at least looks like it is in working condition.

Ebay: Ebay is good place to look for cheap audio equipment. Generally sellers will provide a picture and a brief description of the product and its' history. A good thing about Ebay is that it allows buyers to evaluate sellers. This way you can quickly determine if a seller generally sells high quality stuff. Purchase only from someone that has been around for a high and has a good reputation. If you purchase with a credit card and find that what you receive isn't what you paid for, you will be able to get your money back.

Ebay sellers are also more likely to work with you and issue a refund, because the lifeblood of their business is their reputation and they won't want negative feedback. Of course, this is only true for individuals who have been around for sometime and make a good portion of their income from Ebay.

Craigslist: Craigslist may also be a goldmine to finding good audio equipment. However, there are also a lot of scammers on Craigslist and since there is no way to trace them, they can take your money and disappear. If you are considering doing business with someone from Craigslist, only work with someone local and make the exchange in person, in an area where there are a lot of people, so that you don't get robbed.

Sales: Catching a sale is also a good way to find discounted audio equipment. Check regularly with local and online retailers or give them a call and ask them when their equipment will be going on sale. This will save you a lot of time and effort.<bio>Winston Salem Car RentalsRenting a Car in Winston Salem</bio>

Havana is a city steeped in history, and there's certainly plenty of culture and echoes from the past amongst many of its main tourist attractions. But for those who really want to absorb themselves in a historical holiday in Cuba, these luxury hotels in Havana all have their own claims to fame. From famous events to people, these Havana hotels all have a story to tell within their walls...

Hotel Ambos Mundos

While few would argue that the Hotel Ambos Mundos is the best hotel in Havana, it does have one very strong endorsement -- one that the management has been promoting for decades: between 1932 and 1939, Ernest Hemingway stayed at the hotel, and room 551 is where he wrote the first few chapters of "For Whom the Bell Tolls". It was clearly his favourite room, and is now preserved as a shrine to the legendary author, with his affects -- including the typewriter he worked on -- exactly as he left them when he moved into his own house 9 miles outside of Havana. Local drinking establishments Hemingway was said to favour include La Bodeguita and La Floridita, so if you work up a thirst on your Cuba holiday, you can enjoy a mojito to Hemingway's specifications.

Hotel Riviera

Notorious gangster Meyer Lansky (known for his work in The Commission and heading up Murder Inc. in the US) used his relationship with corrupt Cuban leader Fulgencio Batista y Zaldivar to build this casino and luxury hotel in Havana in 1957. It was short lived though, as Zaldivar was overthrown by the Cuban revolution just two years later, and the casino was shut down, with the hotel becoming property of the state. In its two years of Vegas style glory, it managed to attract celebrities from around the globe.

Hotel Nacional

The Nacional hotel in Havana has the longest list of celebrity visitors in the whole of Cuba. Holiday making celebrities included actors Errol Flyn, Marlon Brando and Buster Keaton, historical figures Winston Churchill, Alexander Flemming, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, and even various Italian-American gangsters such as Lucky Luciano and Frank Costello.

Santa Isabel Hotel

The Santa Isabel is another luxury Havana hotel that's popular with celebrity visitors to the island. Amongst the likes of Jack Nicholson, Jake Bloom, Bruce Willis, Sting, Naomi Campbell and Robert Plant are heads of state including King Juan Carlos II and former US president Jimmy Carter. His 2002 visit was the first person to hold that high office to visit the island since 1928 when Calvin Coolidge attended the Pan American Conference in Havana.

Hotel Inglaterra

Although time has been less kind to the Hotel Inglaterra, its heritage speaks for itself. As well as hosting guests from the world the arts (Garcia Lorca, Sara Bernhardt, Anna Pavlova) and sports (Jose Raul Capablanca and Ramon Fonst), the Inglaterra was host to Cuban national hero José Martí's famous speech in homage to Manuel Marquez Sterling in 1879. More recently, the hotel has hosted Frei Betto -- one of the creators of the Liberation theology.

While some of these Havana hotels may not be the most luxurious in town, what they lose in features and decadence, they more than make up for in character in history. If you want to walk in the footsteps of Winston Churchill, Federico Garcia Lorca or Ernest Hemingway, the historical hotels of Havana provide the perfect place to hang your hat on a Cuba holiday.<bio>Emma Lelliott is the general manager of Captivating Cuba, an independent specialist in Havana hotels and holidays.
As a building material, brick is as old as dirt and water, and the basic way bricks are made hasn't changed much in the thousands of years people have been using them. But there are many varieties available, and which kind you choose depends mostly on what your aesthetic goals are.

Bricklaying, or masonry, is enjoyed by many people as a relaxing hobby -- Winston Churchill was an enthusiast -- though of course it is more commonly used for its practical applications. Brick walls don't need to be painted or weatherproofed, and they provide good insulation. They look sturdy and beautiful, too.

Building bricks have holes in them to reduce weight and save on materials. andquot;Face bricksandquot; are the more familiar bricks, the solid ones that are used when the entire brick will be visible. There are also paving stones, or andquot;pavers, andquot; which are used for decorative purposes such as patios and sidewalks. Firebricks are specially made heat-resistant items to be used in fireplaces and other heat-intensive places.

Another style of brick is the cinderblock. It's not nearly as nice to look at as the standard red brick, but being larger, it's useful for building particularly large walls, as not as many bricks are required. Cinderblocks can be glazed or burnished, too, in order to make the wall look more appealing.

If you're planning a brick-laying project with the standard red bricks, plan on about five bricks per square foot if it's a paving project, or seven per square foot for walls. A pallet of bricks has 516 of them. Buy a few extra bricks to allow for mistakes, particularly if you'll be cutting any in half and are not experienced at it. Cutting bricks is tricky business -- always wear protective goggles! -- and even pros ruin one now and then. <bio>http://www.brickchoice.com is packed with information on facing bricks and faux bricks </bio>

Jewelry collectors of the world know that often a piece of jewelry's value lies not only its karat worth but also its past -- where it came from, how it was acquired and the intrigue it has created through the years. These individual pieces, brought together, form prized collections that hold stories of conquest and mystery.

Considered to be one of the world's most valuable and largest collections, the Imperial Crown Jewels of Iran is comprised of an exhaustive number of tiaras, crowns, thrones, and the world's largest collection of emeralds, rubies, spinels, and yellow diamonds. Representing nearly 2,500 years of Shah rule in Iran, most of the items were acquired by the Safavid shahs who ruled from 1502-1736 A.D. The collection is so invaluable it backs Iranian currency as a reserve.

This Persian treasure also boasts the world's largest spinel. The Samarian Spinel is a 500-carat, blood-red stone currently held at the National Jewelry Museum of Iran in Tehran. Like many treasures of its magnitude, the Samarian Spinel has a unique legend which tells of its use around the neck of the gold calf built by the Israelites while Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments.

Equally breathtaking, the collection's Pahlavi Crown sports a 60-carat brilliant-cut yellow diamond and was created in the early 1920s for the last ruler of the Imperial Dynasty. The crown is also studded with 3,380 diamonds which total 1,144 carats and is made with red velvet. The official crown of the Qajar Dynasty, which ruled from 1796 to 1925, the Kiani Crown features 1,800 pearls and rubies, as well as emeralds and diamonds.

During the Iranian Revolution in 1979 that caused the collapse of the Pahlavi Dynasty, rumors spread that the Imperial Crown Jewels had been stolen and sold abroad. While a few smaller pieces had indeed been stolen and smuggled out of the country, most of the collection remained intact. Unfortunately, while the smugglers and their booty were caught by Pakistani authorities, the stolen items have yet to be returned to Iran.

One of America's most famous jewelers, Harry Winston created a jewelry empire that now includes salons in New York, Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, Dallas, Paris, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Winston really began his collection with the acquisition of Arabella Huntington's jewelry collection. Wife of railroad magnate Henry Huntington, Arabella's collection was one of the world's most prestigious. The jewelry, whose style was considered largely old fashioned, was redesigned by Winston into more contemporary styles.

In addition, Winston was the owner of some of the world's most precious diamonds known to man. The Hope Diamond, which appears brilliant blue to the naked eye, was donated by Winston to the Smithsonian Institution. A curse was believed to have been placed on the diamond, creating financial ruin and heartbreak to anyone who owned it. Winston never believed in the curse of the diamond, which was once owned by Marie Antoinette. Today it is part of the Smithsonian's National Gem Collection.

Also in the collection, the Napoleon Diamond Necklace was given to Empress Marie-Louise by her husband Napoleon. Made of 47 diamonds weighing a total of 275 carats, the necklace was passed down through the Empress' family for generations. It eventually reached Winston in 1960 who sold it two years later to Marjorie Merriweather Post. Today, it is also on display at the Smithsonian Institute.

Purchased by Winston in 1935, the Jonker was originally discovered as a 726-carat rough crystal and represented the first a diamond of its caliber to be cleaved in the United States. The Jonker, the largest diamond of the crystal, was much beloved by Winston who refused to sell it for many years. Instead, he displayed the diamond at exhibitions. Winston eventually sold the diamond to King Farouk of Egypt, who sold the diamond to the Queen of Nepal. Eventually, the Jonker was sold at a Hong Kong auction for $4 million.

The personal jewelry collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is conservatively valued at $57 million. Most of the pieces were given as gifts to the Queen. A magnificent piece of the collection is the Timur Ruby, a splendid 352.50-carat spinel. The piece is inscribed with the names of previous owners who were Mughal emperors.
Though there are several over the counter medications, instant relief giving pills for headache, most of them are temporary relief. Nobody knows the real cause of headache, for the simple reason that there are more than one cause and type of headaches. As for stress, the root cause of the stress is also the root cause of headache. If the conditions of stress are removed, the related headache also vanishes.

The reasons for stress could be many, but generally one strong factor overrides all others. But the empowering reasons for headaches are many. The headache could be due to a simple reason or some serious reason. They could be hunger, serious study during the examination, working without intermission far into the night, anxiety over certain issues deeply concerning you, the atmospheric conditions, changing of seasons, abrupt change in the climate and drinking impure water to name a few.

Most of the minor headaches disappear without medication. Due to the peculiar nature of the headache, it is very difficult to locate the reasons for headache in children. Like the elders the children too are stressed for their own reasons.

Stress and headaches are closely interlinked. The dividing line is so thin that it is difficult to understand whether stress is the cause of the headache or the headache is the cause of stress. If stress is the cause of headache, it is futile to take treatment for headache. Even if taken, the results won't be permanent. The causes of stress will have to be removed first.

Headache can also be due to multiple causes-- physical conditions coupled with psychological conditions. To know the root cause of the headache whether it is stress-related or due to any other causes is very important.

The reasons for stress related headaches could be working in a not properly ventilated room, walking or standing in the hot sun for long hours, eye strain due to lots of reading, too much watching of television from the close range and things alike. The modern materialistic civilization throws many more causes for stress related headaches. Traveling in overcrowded railway compartments, waiting for long hours at the air-port due to delayed flights could also be the reason for the headache.

"It is better to have a world united than a world divided. But it is better to have a world divided, than a world destroyed," said Mr. Winston Churchill at the time of The Second World War. The relation between headache and stress is somewhat like that! <bio>To get more information on stress management, stress management and stress and headache visit http://www.aboutstressmanagement.com/stressrelief/ </bio>

Interestingly enough, two innocuous prunes claim to be accepted as one of the secret weapons of World War II period.

Spink, an auction house in London, is selling two graying prunes that it claims were chosen to be stuffed with documents or other maps to be passed on to prisoners of war secretly. As part of the memorabilia sheltered by a British spy the prunes had been preserved.

According to Emily Jackson, the Spink spokeswoman, the prunes are extremely dry and hard and it is really astonishing that they have survived.

The late Doreen Mulot, a previous member of Special Operations Executive of Britain, which was started to steer operations behind enemy lines, had collected World War II memorabilia such as these http://www.a2armory.com/ww2-weapons.html of which the prunes formed a part.

The then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Hugh Dalton had established the executive to carry on warfare by means other than direct military engagement and it was referred to as 'the Baker Street Irregulars' after Sherlock Holmes' fictional group of spies.

In a telephonic interview Marshall informed that his great-aunt prepared the prunes in a large bathroom of her large house in Hampstead in north London neighborhood.

In water the dried fruits were softened and then de-pitted to allow insertion of carefully rolled documents covered in waxed paper into cavities. Next those were re-dried and packed in Red Cross food parcels for the prisoners who utilized the information to flee away. Quite an ingenious idea it was, Marshall said, but not at all a thing normally connected with fighting when war rages.

Marshall added that she had told him how she along with an associate would be seated over the bathtub that was filled with prunes.

Confirmation came out from the auction house that in any operation these prunes were never used. <bio>For further information from Jackie Kent about World War II Weaponry and Medieval Swords, please visit http://www.a2armory.com </bio>

With so many young people trying to work from home on the Internet it is amazing just how many of them really do not have the slightest idea of the workload they have got themselves into.

Many of these people did not even sit down and assess what it is that they see as reasonable personal goal. This is a huge mistake on their part. You must know what you want in order to find a way to obtain it. It must be clear to everyone willing to jump into the Internet marketing world; if you are not sure whether or not you have the drive and a willingness to succeed you might want to save yourself some time, money and much aggravation. It is easy to desire something, and you may think you know how to get it, but there is this little issue about dedication and determination, do you have it? Why put yourself through the troubles of failing and wondering exactly where you went wrong.

The great Winston Churchill once said, "If you find yourself walking through hell, just keep going". This idea of the struggles people face, in business and in life is just that. Struggles, the winners will survive and the weak will fall. This has been a true facet in life since the beginning of time. Basically staying power in the Internet marketing business is about keeping your face off the pavement.

They also do not get the fact that because it is their business and not someone else's responsibility, that they in turn will have to work probably much harder to keep it going. When these people hear the nonsense about working 1 hour per week and striking it rich, I truly feel sorry for their heads and wallets when they inevitably re-enter the earth's atmosphere, and hit the ground with a screeching halt. Again this may be nothing more than naivety, and not total stupidity. The unfortunate part for most people new to the scene is that they have absolutely no idea just what it entails on a time basis.

What must be remembered is that success cannot be bought in a can. It is the single marketing plan and strategy that is doomed to fail. You must be able to walk many avenues in order to reap the benefits of the successes it can yield. Buy into what you truly feel will get you ahead, listen to what other marketers are saying in the forums and try to catch on quick. This field is extremely fast and waits for no one. The best way to do business is to spread out your resources as much as possible; the best way for exposure is to be out in the middle of the field, if you do your research first, then i have no doubt you will be successful.

Copyright © Vincent Murphy <bio>Vincent Murphy can help you to find the best home based business ideas and opportunities so you can work at home visit: http://www.HomeGrail.com </bio>

"There's a better way to do it. Find it." - Thomas Edison

There may be joy in web design, but often the joy rings hollow when there are multiple steps to create something that may not even work. Certainly there are individuals who thrive on learning various web codes and how to make them work together, but this is not often the case.

"Recognizing the need is the primary condition for design." - Charles Eames

If the need is to create an ecommerce website then you have a target for what will ultimately become your web design. The design should never come before discovering the need.

"A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked." - John Gall

The complexities of web design can be distilled in a template rich web design and web hosting solution that pulls together some of the best web design tools and allows the complex system of web design to be developed in a simplified system that does not require a degree in computer language.

"Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way." - Edward de Bono

The established pattern has often been to find a web designer who can create something totally unique to your need. This may be a practical means of developing your website, but when you factor in creativity you may discover that the use of website design tools already in existance may allow you to personally create something in a 'different way'. The result may help you to feel more gratification knowing you were the one who created your ecommerce site.

"Out of intense complexities intense simplicities emerge." - Winston Churchill

It is possible that by discovering the complexities that can be associated with web design you may see, with clarity, a solution that is low cost and driven by your own personality and tastes.

The use of a template rich system is that, as technology advances and new methods become available, your website can literally morph into these new design methods with your site design host assembling upgrades that will benefit your ecommerce site as your business grows.

"Design and programming are human activities; forget that and all is lost." - Bjarne Stroustrup

A comprehensive web design solution provides the means to place your humanity into the design elements of your website and may well be the ecommerce solution best suited to your need. <bio>Scott Lindsay is a web developer and entrepreneur.
A recent survey indicated that nearly 30% of American parents are seriously considering <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/homeschooling" rel="tag">homeschooling their children rather than sending them to school. Home schooling is a different way of education for many parents. It allows children to be educated at home free from the daily school assignments and pressure. It also allows more bonding time between the child and the parent fostering closer relationships.

There are 4 main reasons why you should homeschool your child.

They are

1) Academic Results

One of the reasons parents are hesitant to adopt homeschooling is because they are afraid their child's academic results will suffer. However studies have shown that children who are homeschooling have the same and if not better academic results than those going to traditional schools.

You could also say some of the world's most famous people were homeschooled. Examples include Benjamin Franklin, Florence Nightingale, Winston Churchill and Thomas Edison. Their achievements do not compare less than those who went to school.

Home Schooling allow the parent to cater the study schedule according to the needs of the child. In school, since a teacher has to teach 40 to 50 students at a time, it is quite impossible to cater a specific teaching schedule for each child.

2) Social Reasons

Another important reason why you should homeschool your child is because traditional school do not deal with this aspect of education. Teaching your child to be comfortable with dealing with people.

By introducing your child to church programs and other volunteering programs to help others, it educates the child's moral values which are just as important as academic results.

Homeschooling also shields the child from bad habits due to peer influence. Examples are smoking, alcoholism, gambling, sex, drugs and violence etc

3) Family Bonding

Since homeschooling allows more time between your child and parents, the family relationship is strengthened and there is more family bonding. The child self-confidence and self-esteem improves. Studies have also shown that homeschooled children values family ties and kinship more.

4) Religious Reasons

Schools have always kept away from religious issues due to its sensitive nature in our country. The schools typically has a neutral stand regarding religion and spirituality. Therefore, most schools do not have any kind of religious education

Homeschooling does not have that limitation. Parents can pass on their religious values to their children. This has a great impact on the spiritual development of the child. <bio>Ricky Lim is the founder of http://www.homeschooling-guide.info where he regularly write homeschooling articles to help educators and parents. </bio>

In most cases you learnt them by example- either by a close family member or another very important example in your life.

Many people you will meet in your travels may repeat simple phrases and slogans such as "Those that do not plan -- plan to fail" or such truisms as "The job is not done until the tools (or paperwork) is either put away or finished.

Yet the amazing thing is that most of these same people do not comprehend simple truths that you as child learnt. It is amazing that even a hamster seems to know such things intuitively and instinctively.

How can this be? Why is it that apparently intelligent or in many cases non intelligent people cannot grasp these simple and apparent truisms.

The answer comes down to two factors. Firstly the examples these people saw in life whether it was from their home and family environment or other important role models. It is most important that you set good role models in your parenting skills.

Secondly in life and in many job or power structures a person is promoted not to the station that he or she is best at or most competent but rather to the stage at which his terrible incompetence stops them and their progress up the ladder of life..

Think of it who is it that influenced you to good worthwhile habits in life. What is a family member, an uncle a neighbor? This person may have inadvertently set you on the good path. It is much better to learn from a good role model than have to overcome the mistakes that a poor role model will leave you to overcome

Secondly it should be understood that in life people do not stop at their level of competence. Organizations whether it is at your place of work, your church, school or non profit group tend to promote people until even after trouble begins. Organizational structure is such people are seldom trained for their jobs. They are thrust into a position that they are not trained for and bumble through. To make it worse their role model of choice is their previous poorly or untrained processor... This cycle of life goes on and on infinitum.

Winston Churchill said democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried. The same can be said for role models in life. The same parallels can be said about the job site and parenting skills. It is amazing that there are not more homicides in the workplace among staff and management. <bio>Bill Z Piker IT Dept head call_kirk@hotmail.com Ace Employment Services http://www.aceemploymentservices.net </bio>

Some of the world's most spectacular diamonds and other gems can be admired in the National Gem Collection in the Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Collection in Washington, D.C. The collection is comprised of diamonds known to almost everyone, as well as other diamonds and precious gems possessing a priceless place in history.

While many are familiar with the Hope Diamond, they may be surprised to find out it is not a clear diamond, but instead of brilliant blue stone, surrounded by white diamonds and suspended from a diamond necklace. The Hope Diamond first appeared in history around the mid-1600s when it was purchased by a merchant named Jean Baptiste Tavernier who admired the stone's original violet color. He later sold the stone Louis XIV of France, who gave it to Marie Antoinette.

The spectacular Blue Heart Diamond is a large, heart-shaped diamond mounted on a platinum ring surrounded by white diamonds. It was cut in Paris between 1909 and 1910 but the stone's origin -- Africa or India -- is unclear. Famous jeweler Harry Winston mounted the diamond in its current setting in 1959 and sold the ring to Marjorie Merriweather Post. It's possible that the popular "Heart of the Ocean" heart-shaped diamond necklace in the movie Titanic was based on the Blue Heart Diamond, which is actually set in a ring.

A wedding present from Napoleon, the Marie-Louise Diadem was presented to his wife on the occasion of their marriage in 1810. The diadem, originally part of a set that also included a necklace, comb, belt buckle and earrings, were all made of emeralds and diamonds set in silver and gold. They were made by French jeweler Etienne Nitot et Fils of Paris. After the fall of the empire, Marie-Louis fled to Vienna with her jewelry. She left the diadem to her aunt in Hapsburg. The emeralds were eventually sold individually as pieces "from the historic Napoleon Tiara." The diadem, reset with turquoise cabochons, was purchased by Majorie Merriweather Post for the Smithsonian Institute.

One of the most spectacular all-diamond pieces of jewelry in the Smithsonian Institution is the Napoleon Necklace. Though to have originally been owned by Catherine the Great of Russia, it was presented by Emperor Napoleon of France to his second wife, Marie-Louise of Austria on the birth of their son in 1811. After a succession of owners, it eventually was sold to Harry Winston in 1960. Marjorie Merriweather Post obtained the necklace from Winston and donated it to the Smithsonian Institution in 1962. While difficult to place value on a piece such as this in today's market, it is estimated to be worth millions.

While one does not typically associate diamonds with the Spanish Inquisition, a stunning necklace of diamonds and emeralds of the same name is part of the Smithsonian Collection. According to legend, a portion of the necklace belonged to Spanish royalty and was later worn by ladies of the French court. However, there's little information about the provenance of the necklace. In the early 20th century, it was purchased by the Maharajah of Indore, whose son sold the necklace to Harry Winston. Winston sold the necklace to Mrs. Cora Hubbard Williams of Pittsburgh. She bequeathed it to the Smithsonian in 1972.

Having met an untimely end at the guillotine in 1793, Marie Antoinette loved jewelry and possessed many magnificent jewels. Two large, pear-shaped earrings, part of the Smithsonian collection, were supposedly set in earrings that belonged to Marie Antoinette. The diamonds were later acquired by the Grand Duchess Tatiana Yousupoff of Russia. They were never rested in the 100 years that they were in the family. Marjorie Merriweather Post acquired the earrings in 1928. They were eventually reset in platinum replicas of the original silver settings in the 1950s. The diamonds are originally from India or Brazil.

Women who discover Pandora Jewelry bracelets and complementing jewelry create their own collections with these exquisite pieces made of 14K gold and sterling silver. These Danish-designed pieces are also handcrafted with colorful precious stones and cultured pearls. With more than 600 beads and matching jewelry to choose from, Pandora bracelet wearers have an endless array of combinations from which to create their own masterpiece.<bio>Lewis Jewelers is proud to carry the full line of Pandora Jewelry.
It's common to believe, when you listen to great speakers at work, that certain people are simply born with the talent to speak well, and therefore no amount of training or practicing is going to transform you into a great speaker, no matter how hard you try. And while it's true that both John Kennedy and Bill Clinton have what most people don't - charisma - their ability to speak as they do was not part of what they were born with.

Bill Clinton was not always a great speaker. He was guilty of several bad practices, one being common to the political class: Clinton actually thought people wanted to hear elected officials go on at the mouth for one, two, or even three hours. The truth is you rarely hear someone say, "That was a great presentation - I only wished he would have droned on for another hour or so". And FDR is famous for his advice to public speakers: Be sincere; be brief; be seated!

Brevity is the soul of wit, but it's also the heart of a great talk. President Ronald Reagan, the person for whom the name "The Great Communicator" was coined, had a strict limit of 45 minutes, but preferred to stay under 25 whenever possible.

Another annoying practice of Clinton's was the repeated use of his forefinger to point at the audience when he spoke. People tend to feel uncomfortable when pointed at, and we know how important it is for audience members to feel comfortable. His handlers never could break him of the general motion, but they were able to train him to crank that finger back into his hand and then lock it down with his thumb.

You can probably easily picture Bill Clinton with his fist moving up and down, thumb pointed outward as it held a firm grip on his finger, declaring to the assembled press, "I did not have relations with that woman, that Monica Lewinsky..."

Finally, like most people, and by far the majority of politicians, he would rarely stop the word flow once he started. As charming and charismatic as he was with individuals, when speaking in public, he did not understand the essence of the pause. But his handlers knew the respect he had for his "mentor", and so they sat him down and had him watch videotapes of JFK over and over again until he got it.

A New Style

Clinton's speaking style is really a modernized version of Kennedy's. But JFK was one of the most influential speakers of the 2oth century, in that he really introduced the "humanistic" style of public speaking. Prior to Kennedy's showing the world the power of an authoritarian's speaking to his "subjects" on equal terms, we had the "oratory" style, best exemplified by Winston Churchill.

Churchill spoke to us from on high - Kennedy brought speech down to the level of the common man, and people loved him for it.

We are not suggesting that every time you give a speech or deliver a presentation you should speak as if you were the president of your country. We use these two men as examples because they learned just how powerful the pause can be when needing to persuade others to see things as you do. The reality is that few people will ever use as many pauses when they present as these and other Masters of The Skills, but then most people don't average 10,000 or so people in their audiences.

But we want you, from this point forward, to be constantly hearing these cadences in your head when you speak, with the understanding that you'll be gaining more and more message uptake the more you strive to hit their stride. Right now, we would wager that you probably average no less than 25 words between pauses, and that many of you don't pause at all. If you want to be a speaker who can truly lay claim to having The Skills, you must work to incorporate the pause at least at the end of every thought.<bio>J. From Bulgari to Cartier to Harry Winston, the world's famous jewelers have created pieces of bejeweled art that have captured the attention of collectors worldwide, as well as the imagination of those who appreciate fine jewelry.

Frederic Boucheron

Acquiring fame as an expert in precious stones, Frederic Boucheron opened his first jewelry salon at the Palais Royal in 1858. The masterful creator of beautiful jewelry, Boucheron also set up shop at the Place Vendome in 1893, which is still in successful operation today. Boucheron branches are also located in Moscow, Japan, London, and the Far East. Historical international expositions included exhibitions of Boucheron's pieces, including the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial, the 1889 and 1990 Expositions Universelle, and the 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs, all in Paris.

Sotirio Bulgari

Sotirio Bulgari of Greece began his firm in 1879 when he moved to Rome to open his first shop in Via Sistina. Bulgari's distinctive style was carried on by his sons after his death in 1932. Bulgari jewelry-lovers admire the firm's classical and Renaissance-inspired art, which features colors and patterns found in mosaics. Bulgari is also famous for transforming ancient coins into jewels. Bulgari boutiques grace Geneva, Hong Kong, London, Milan, New York, Paris, Singapore, and Tokyo. In 1998, a Bulgari diamond and colored diamond brooch auctioned at Christie's for $1,186,400.

Louis-Francois Cartier

Renowned French jewelry and watch maker, Cartier may have gotten its start in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier, but it took it his grandsons Louis, Pierre and Jacques to build Cartier into the world famous empire it is today. Throughout its history, Cartier has undergone continued changes which have made it an international phenomenon. In 1983, the Cartier Museum was initiated; and in 1993, Cartier became a part of the Vendome Luxury Group.

Joseph Chaumet

Official jeweler to Napoleon:Chaumet was originally founded under another name. This jewelry firm captured favor for its grandiose creations and royal clientele including the Empress Josephine and later Empress Marie-Louise. Following the fall of Napoleon, the firm garnered continued acclaim under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Fossin and his son, Jules. Both were artists in their right who captured a spirit of Romanticism in their jeweled creations. In 1889, Joseph Chaumet, a Bordeaux jeweler took over the company and changed its name to Chaumet. The successful change in ownership thrust Chaumet onto the international scene, serving as jeweler to European royal houses and winning copious awards at international exhibitions.

Laurence Graff

Creating jewelry with some of the rarest gems available, Graff Diamonds was founded in London in 1960. The revered firm has handled some of the world's most treasured gemstones, including The Idol's Eye, The Emperor Maximillian, and The Begum Blue. The jewelry maker's glamorous style is a result of its highly skilled in-house craftsmen. In 2002, a pair of Graff diamond and emerald ear-pendants sold at auction for $772,000. The House of Graff has locations in London, New York City, Monte Carlo, Dubai, and Moscow.

Tiffany and Co.

While Tiffany and Co. may have begun as a fancy goods store in the 1800s, by the 1950s Tiffany and Co. had captured its emphasis on the jewelry business. Its most famous pieces were created and sold by the founder's son, Louis Comfort Tiffany. However, other esteemed jewelry designers, as well as renowned gemologist George Frederick Kunz were later instrumental in propelling Tiffany and Co. to international jewelry stardom. Today, Tiffany and Co. can be found in more than 100 locations worldwide.

Harry Winston

At only 24 years of age, Harry Winston opened his first jewelry store in New York City. A little more than a decade later, Winston established a company under his own name. Here, he handled such famous diamonds as the Jonker, the Taylor-Burton, the Star of Sierra Leone, and the Vargas. He was also responsible for donating The Hope, The Portuguese and, the Oppenheimer diamonds to the Smithsonian. Known as the "King of Diamonds," Winston owned nearly one third of all the famous museum diamonds at one time or another. After his father's death, Ronald Winston continued the Winston dynasty, expanding into additional markets in Tokyo and Beverly Hills.

While some of the world's most famous jewelers have made their mark in history, many local jewelers also carry on this tradition of beauty -- fashioning jewelry that delights and commemorates. Whether famous globally or just well-known to a local community, artists in jewels are part of a long legacy -- creating today's jewelry for tomorrow.<bio>Lewis Jewelers is proud to carry the full line of Pandora Jewelry.
In the epic classic book and movie, Ben-Hur, the main character, Judah Ben-Hur, through an accident and tragic misunderstanding is arrested and sold to work in the mines by the Roman authorities. Despite going from the son of a wealthy family to slave, Ben-Hur refused to fall into despair. He exercised and built his strength up. When he was ready he inched his way up the mineshaft and made it to the top. Unfortunately, he was easily captured because he was blinded by the sunlight after spending so much time in the dark mine shaft.

His captors were so impressed with his strength that they sold him to the Roman navy as a rower for their warships. Again Ben-Hur refused to give up. He used his great strength to become the best rower on the boat. Eventually, he was given the special privilege of not being chained to the boat.

Later in a great naval battle, his boat was rammed and sunk. Because Ben-Hur was not chained, he was the only slave to escape. He was able to save the admiral who had given permission to have him unchained. The admiral was so grateful; he took him to Rome and adopted him as his son. Later when the admiral died, Ben-Hur inherited his great wealth. He eventually made his way back to Jerusalem and was reunited with his mother and sister.

What can we learn from this story? Instead of slipping into despair from the injustice done to him, Ben-Hur burned with great desire for freedom and to right the wrong done to him. He refused to give up. Despite the hopeless situation he found himself in, he spent his time preparing himself. When opportunities came he took advantage of them.

Winston Churchill

"To every man there comes . . . that special moment when he is figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a special thing unique to him and fitted to his talent. What a tragedy if that moment finds him unprepared or unqualified for the work which would be his finest hour."

Many have had to go through tough times. Many think their situations are hopeless. Many think they are in dead-end jobs going nowhere. There is an amazing miracle waiting for those who bide their time by preparing and improving themselves.

Develop your talents. Don't waste your time spending hours watching TV or spending unproductive time on the Internet. Take classes. Successful people never stop learning. Improve the skills you already have. Improve your reading, writing, and vocabulary.

There seems to be a universal law which seems to always send opportunity to those who are moving forward. You will be amazed when that opportunity comes along that your unique collection of talents and abilities fits it perfectly. <bio>Richard Kimball is a successful entrepreneur, artist, and teacher.
Modern presentation theory espouses a conversational approach to presenting, because that's the way to maximize both comfort and trust between you and the audience.

The conversational approach, a modern refinement of the humanist style first made popular in western cultures by president John F. Kennedy, is quite a bit different from the oratory style that most people associate with earlier great speakers such as Winston Churchill.

The foundation of the conversational approach is proper eye-contact, and the nature of that eye-contact is quite unlike the way 99% of presenters practice. In fact, once you know what to look for, you will discover that what first differentiates those who have The Skills from those who don't is the way they engage their audiences with their eyes.

Make no mistake, proper eye-contact is only one component of The Skills, but when you understand exactly how you must look at your audience to be a great speaker, the other components tend to fall into place.

When you nail down these (surprisingly straightforward) eye contact techniques, you can deliver to a group of 500 without ever feeling more anxiety than you would when discussing your job to friends around a lunch table.

Most people find that hard to believe until they've actually received training in The Skills, but when you get it, it's rather powerful stuff!

These exercises sound simple enough, but they do require a bit of vigilance on your part to have the desired effect. You must practice them at every opportunity for a week or so. At the end of that time you will know what you need to know to move on to the next level of acquiring The Skills, but only if you make a conscious effort to do what the exercises ask you to do every day.

Exercises:

1.Observe others' eye contact. In every situation in which you interact with others, watch their eyes. Observe how long they maintain eye contact while they are speaking to you. Watch how they maintain eye contact while speaking to others. As often as you can, count the number of seconds they maintain continuous eye contact before switching to a new target and note this, preferably in a log of some sort.

2.In situations where someone is speaking to a group, again count the number of seconds the speaker maintains eye contact with each individual. Determine what the average amount of time is.

3.Be conscious of your own eye contact. When speaking with someone, do you stay focused on them? Do you look up, away, or down while speaking? Or do you maintain eye contact the entire time you are speaking with someone? How often do you move away from eye contact and then return? Do you look at other people for the same amount of time when talking to one as when you are talking to many?

If you've vigilant in your observations, you'll probably be very surprised at the amount of time people hold continuous eye-contact when speaking. And yet it is this amount of time that sets the tone for what makes average speakers average and great ones great.<bio>J.
