andquot;Get over there,andquot; my friend Nan said with a shove.

I won't. I can't go, I thought, then recoiled. I set down my tea, put the book back into my black tote bag and zipped it shut. She'd never, I mean why would she?andquot;

andquot;Just come on, will you?andquot; Nan said so... well, so confidently. Oh yeah, that's right. I'm the journalist here.

I straightened by back, fumbled for the paperback and walked over to greet Nan. Yes, living life at the marrow, that's what I'd promised myself. It's my favorite quote from Thoreau's Walden: Life isn't worth living unless you can live it at the marrow. And I was doing it. Although, I could begin tomorrow... andquot;Hurry up!andquot;

Okay, now I'm nervous, tightly gripping my dog-eared and yellowed copy of First Lady From Plains with anticipation. In the other hand a pen, damp with perspiration. andquot;Are you sure? Do you think she'll mind?andquot;

andquot;Get over there next to her and I'll take your picture.andquot;

I looked up. Yes, there I was standing right next to her; the former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. I was. I swear. (You can see me here: www.lauramturner.com) I'd been invited to the National Women's Hall Of Fame annual induction luncheon in Seneca Falls, New York. The best credential I'd ever earned working as a journalist. Just to be on the beat was an accomplishment, I promise you.

The Women's Hall pays tribute to females of experience, women of power, persuasion. Women from the likes of Oprah, to legends passed such as suffragist Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks and literary giants like Willa Cather and Eudora Welty. These Great Ladies, all two hundred seventeen of them, line the walls of the National Women's Hall. Accomplished women. Women who dared. Women who live life at the marrow.

andquot;Oh! Hello. Good afternoon, Mrs. Carter,andquot; I stammered. andquot;Congratulations on your induction, and your accomplishments,andquot; I paused. andquot;Oh and would you mind very much signing my book. Would you? Oh and my name's Laura, by the way.andquot; I swallowed hard. Smooth, right? I finally get to meet The First Lady From Plains and there's no place at all to buy a vowel.

Rosalynn Carter extended her hand. I placed the pen in her grip and gazed at her like a child opening a pop-up storybook and watching the pictures come to life. andquot;Pleased to meet you,andquot; she said.

She signed, then placed the volume and pen back into my hands. Snap!

andquot;Thank you,andquot; I said smoothing the glossy cover. Nan and I returned to our seats. The former First Lady returned to her seat. And the chicken salad was served.

About The National Women's Hall Of Fame (Reference: http://www.greatwomen.org/mission.php):

andquot;In 1969, a group of women and men of Seneca Falls created the National Women's Hall of Fame, believing that the contribution of American women deserved a permanent home in the small village where it all began. The Hall is home to exhibits, artifacts of historical interest, a research library and office. The National Women's Hall of Fame, a national membership organization, holds as its mission:

'To honor in perpetuity these women, citizens of the United States of America whose contributions to the arts, athletics, business, education, government, the humanities, philanthropy and science, have been the greatest value for the development of their country.' (Copyright 2006 National Women's Hall Of Fame)

The Hall is a shrine to some of the greatest women in the history of this country and a tribute that grows annually with each induction ceremony as we learn to appreciate more about the wonderful contributions that women make to our civilization.andquot;

To take the online tour or to learn more about the National Women's Hall of Fame, visit their website http://www.greatwomen.org <bio>Laura M.
"Winter Blues". Willa light box help me?

Perhaps a winter trip to Hawaii, Texas or Tahiti may help as well or even as much in controlling your, a family member of a friend's winter depression.

It is medically estimated that about 2 % of the general population suffer from what is technicality referred to as "Seasonal Affective Disease" or "SAD", popularly called "Winter Blues". It is said that approximately 10 % of the general population manages to "get by", throughout the winter with troublesome, irritating but troublesome symptoms of the "winter Bleus".

What are the symptoms of "SAD"? What to watch for in you, friends and family during the cold winter time and that by spring disappear or subside First and foremost it should be noted and emphasized that depression can be the result of many causes. If the person shows serious or even moderate signs of depression they should receive immediate professional care and prompt attention. If you are having trouble obtaining treatment then the person can be taken to a medical emergency ward at your local hospital promptly.

Sleep problems - oversleeping, but the person is not refreshed, often cannot get out of bed. The same person may need a nap in the afternoon. Big time weight gain. Overeating. Cravings of sweets and chocolate. Depression, despair, misery, guilt and anxiety. Normal task that previously were no big deal are difficult if not impossible. Is the person just too tired or lethargic to accomplish their other task? Lastly physical symptoms may become more apparent such is irritable bowels disease with its assorted cramps and pains and as well rheumatoid and / or joint pains. Lastly if the person becomes seasonally and unmorally crabby and difficult to live with in the winter but seems fine during the spring, summer and fall seasons.

What causes these "Winter Bleus "or "Seasonal Affective Depression" and what you do or what can be done about it? This winter sadness is all in the brain. It may be because of missing strong light in the winter. It may be as a result of chemistry in the brain and the interaction of chemical "neurotransmitters".

It has been noted since the dawn of man, that ancient poets have described a sense of sadness as the days shorten in the fall and winter =96 leading to the winter equinox. In fact most cultures have winter festivals that are associated with candles, light or fire =96 be it Christmas, Hanukah or Sikh holidays. In fact most cultures have holidays that mark and celebrate the winter solstice =96 the time period and day from which onwards daylight increases.

It is now known that bright light will definitely help ward off the severity and incidence of SAD. In addition the further south a person moves, the less is the severity of the illness. It is also appreciated that women have a highest rate of, and severity of SAD.

What are your options? Therapy at your current location with "Bright Light Boxes". Walking outdoors, travel and vacations and even relocation to warmer, brighter climes.

"Bright Light Boxes" can be used. Typically the light is 5 times a bright as the standard florescent lights in an office. The person treated will need to be under these special lights for approx half hour a day, It is not simply the case that a somewhat brighter light or lighting will do, it is special lamps with these brightness levels. Secondly it is highly unlikely that a whole office will allow it self to be subjected to these levels of brightness lighting levels. Poor concentration, work levels and even insomnia can result.

Outdoor light will do the same trick of helping winter depression. Walking outside half an hour or so will both accomplish the therapeutic amount of proper light needed and as well provide relaxing exercise. This is all very simple, and can be very good =96 that is the weather is not too cold, the person is mobile and the neighborhood safe.

Lastly travel and a change of scenery can do the trick in more ways than one. It is well known that if the person moves his location from a more northern clime =96 say Grand Forks North Dakota to a more southern clime that will have longer hours, and a warmer climate to walk outside- then the SAD symptoms will diminish. An example might be a winter vacation to Las Vegas Nevada, Florida or Hawaii. Indeed in very severe cases of winter depression individuals have decided to move their place of residence once and for all.

After all better to be hot and perhaps humid than cold, dark and depressed. <bio>Margaret Z.
Tricia was feeling the full impact of being a member of the Sandwich Generation as her father declined in his 80's. "Dad and I shared such fun times together when I was young =96 he taught me how to ride a horse, shoot a BB gun, ice skate, stand on my head. He was always so active. Last year, I had to insist that he not drive anymore. Now, seeing him shuffle around just breaks my heart."

It's difficult for any baby Boomer to watch as parents deteriorate. And they may complicate the situation by being in denial about their vulnerable condition. It's up to you to acknowledge the true state of affairs and be straightforward in dealing with their increasing fragility. A number of issues must be discussed, uncomfortable as that is - health care directives in an emergency, long-term care options, the designated power of attorney, distribution of income and assets.

After evaluating the practical issues that need to be managed, you will feel more in control as you gather detailed information and make arrangements for the most immediate concerns. Like Tricia, you can recall the good times and use some of the following 8 tips to help you plan and implement your caregiving:

1. Embrace the changes in your parents and respect their integrity. Accept them at whatever stage they are, even as they become less strong physically and mentally. Willa reminisced about her Father. "He has always been my hero. As a child, I felt safe with him because he was so powerful. Now I admire his courage and dignity, as he struggles with coming to terms with end of life issues."

2. Spend time learning more about your parent's illness. Educate yourself on what to expect and the resources available. Talk to friends who have gone through similar experiences in order to get realistic feedback and concrete advice.

3. Make sure that your parents are as involved in the decision-making process as they can be. Moving out of their own home may signify their loss of independence. This often creates anger, frustration, or feelings of depression. Understanding their pain and engaging a geriatric social worker or gerontologist at this time can be helpful for everyone in the family.

4. Don't do it alone =96 secure help, even if it is over your parents' objections, and have support systems in place. Reach out, create a network, hire someone to assist them as often as you think is necessary. Betty was frantic about making arrangements for her Dad after his stroke. "I was so relieved when I was introduced to the hospital discharge planner. Her expertise and kindness made the move to a rehabilitation center almost bearable." Make good use of community interventions, respite care, support groups and adult caregiver resources.

5. Be forthright with your family. Engage your siblings in the problems and the solutions. Ask for practical help and delegate responsibilities. Have them set aside personal agendas and work together toward collective goals.

6. Some nonprofit organizations nationwide offer free services or financial grants for respite care for family members who provide most of the care to their chronically ill elders. The federal government, through the National Family Caregiver Support Program, provided funds for respite care to over 190,000 families in 2004. To learn if there is a program in your local community, go online to Eldercare.gov and look for the Eldercare Locator, or call 1-800-677-1116.

7. See the present challenge as a teachable moment and make the most of learning whatever you can. Apply these lessons to other areas of your life. What insight have you gained about dealing with your own aging process? How can you talk to your children about your wishes when you become older?

8. Look for the positives in these tough times. Gloria was learning a lot about herself as she cared for her Dad in the last months of his life. "I had never really been tested like this before. Sometimes caring for him seemed like more than I could endure, but I kept going. Now I know how strong I can be." In the end, think less about what you're losing and more about the chance you may be gaining. This could be the only time in your life that you have the opportunity to give back to your parents emotionally what they have given to you

As you are discovering more about developing your own capacity for resiliency, you will find the way to nourish yourself. You may call on your faith, your spirituality, or your sense of humor. Rely on whatever sustains you during these most difficult moments.

=A9 2007, www.HerMentorCenter.com <bio>Rosemary Lichtman, Ph.D. and Phyllis Goldberg, Ph.D. are founders of http://www.HerMentorCenter.com, a website for midlife women and http://www.NourishingRelationships.Blogspot.com, a Blog for the Sandwich Generation.
