I bet every one of you readers is familiar with message boards. Probably you've been joining in most of the discussions provided by these boards online or you probably have designed a message board for your group. Well, the concept for message board has long been commonly heard among many people. Children and adults alike are familiar with this concept. However, if you haven't heard about message boards yet, then note the following facts.

The Basics

Message boards are also known as internet forums or discussion boards. They are basically a web application that serves for online discussions. They are also considered as the modern heir of the bulletin board systems as well as existing Usenet news systems that were far-flung in the 1980s and 1990s.

What does a bulletin board system means lies on the idea that it is a computer system running software that allows users to have contact into the system through phone line and then carry out actions such as downloading software and data, reading news, exchanging messages with other users, and uploading files.

Speaking of computer system, the message boards generally appear to be part of a website. They encourage the computer users to involve or participate in the online discussions. This simply means that that the computer users have the chance to start topics and discuss issues with one another. If we will look at it as a whole system, it seems that "team work" is present there.

Message Board and Wikis

There are some times when message boards comprise most, if not all, the content of a particular mise-en-scene. Also, most of the time, the users are not allowed to edit or to change the one's post on the forum. However, since message boards are usually controlled by the known site "administrators" and "moderators", these people have access to the posting as well as on editing. It is this feature actually that compares message boards to wikis, a website that allows the users of the forum to add content. Unlike message board, the wikis gives the full authority to the users in editing the content written on the pages.

Message Board and Weblogs

Aside from wikis, message boards are also often compared to weblogs. I guess most of you are familiar with weblogs or blogs. Well, these are but another form of internet application that contain periodic, reverse chronologically ordered posts on a common webpage. The difference between weblogs and message boards basically lies on the fact that message boards mainly grant the board uses to employ and discuss topics that are sometime referred as "threads". Weblogs, on the other hand, only permit one or few users to post an entry. In addition, most of the message boards apt to be more spiked in focus, while weblogs apt to be more particular to a particular topic or issue.

Generally speaking, a message board or internet forum has certain characteristics that differ greatly from the other web applications. It can be flat, which means that each response from the other user within a particular topic is listed in chronological order. It can further be threaded, where every post is linked from a parent post. <bio>Who Else Wants To Get Their Hands On My Closely-Guarded BILLION-DOLLAR Collection Of 73 Winning Advertisements and Sales Letters- FOR FREE! Given the disparity in resources and organization against other actors, their influence presents a puzzle. How can a collection of decentralized, nonprofit, contrarian and discordant websites exercise any influence over political and policy outputs? As the World Wide Web approaches its teens, we have new expectations about both the right to express an opinion and access to information upon which to base that opinion. Blogs have begun playing an important role in raising people's expectations Thus, blogs have demonstrated influence; the power to affect events. Blogging is now positioned inside the context of participatory journalism and the responses of mainstream media and political parties to the new technology are reflections of its emerging influence. Boccaccio's Decameron, published in 1353, is considered to be among the earliest works of literature to propose that a point of view is crucial to understanding. Gutenberg's printing press brought forth a revolution that no one could have anticipated at the time. Today, the Internet is the most important medium since the printing press. It subsumes all that has come before and is, in the most fundamental way, transformative. When anyone can be a writer, in the largest sense and for a global audience, many wish to become one. Actually, no better environment exists nowadays for people to exercise these among many other rights, than the Internet and one of the best mediums to exercise these rights are weblogs.

According to some critics, most weblogs will never attempt to reach a public, even if they are in theory reachable by all Net users. The great majority of weblogs will probably be for personal use, while the user base will be peer to peer, not author to public. Other critics, in their attempt to evaluate the accelerating speed of the weblog trend, support that from what it seems so far, it is probable that most weblogs will be short lived, and wind up abandoned, just as most conversations are abandoned. Also it is probable that a few popular blogs will have huge user base and the vast majority will be invisible most of the time, a pattern that reminds some of the "old" and "traditional" mass media. Since the software and interface are highly flexible, and the uses of an easily updated, good-looking page are endless, weblogs will be commonly used in closed systems--private and company networks--as much as the open waters of the Web.

In relation to political coverage and news stories, bloggers have broken or magnified major news stories and blogs themselves draw fire for partisan politics, poor journalistic practices, and duplicity. They provide a reasonable, but far from perfect, entry point into the news space, better at offering commentary and starting conversations than serving a current-events-indicator role. <bio>Jonathon Hardcastle writes articles for http://letstalkaboutbusiness.com/ - In addition, Jonathon also writes articles for http://universeofjobs.com/ and http://yourealestatesource.com/ </bio>

All the hype about the sale of Weblogs Inc. to America Online (AOL) has given rise to the now famous question -- How much is your blog worth? In acquiring Weblogs Inc., AOL has provided some concrete metrics to future valuation of blogs. How much will traditional media be willing to pay for a blog? Conversely, how much would you sell your blog for?

AOL-Weblogs Inc. Deal -- Benchmark for Future Blog Valuation

Weblogs Inc was established by Jason Calacanis and Brian Alvey in 2003. It is a network of blogs which includes under its wings successful blogs such as Engadget and Autoblog. Jason Calacanis pointed out that Weblogs Inc. earns in excess of $1 million yearly in Google Adsense revenues alone.

AOL purchased Weblogs Inc. for a confidential sum assessed at somewhere between $25 - $40 million. After said purchase, Tristan Louis came up with a blog valuation scheme based on the deal. He created a chart of blog value using the value of each inbound link to Weblogs Inc. as the basis. It is common knowledge that blog readers follow links. Search engines also act as users and primarily determine blog quality rankings based on linkage data thus direct and indirect value links are a great proxy for value measurement. In the blogosphere, conversations that nurture connectivity represented by links and indexes like Technorati give a vantage view of the value of a blog.

Tristan Louis itemized the publicly available data (list of blogs indexed) at Weblogs Inc. network including the number of inbound links (Technorati blog numbers) per blog divided by the purchase price to determine the value of an inbound link to a blog. At the rumored price of $25 million, the estimated value is $ 564 per link. At $30 million, it is $677.57 per link and $903.42 at an acquisition price of $40 million. Interestingly, the consumer segment chalks up the biggest percentage of linkage. Engadget represents over a third of the overall network traffic.

Applying Tristan Louis's Weblogs Inc, sale, Dave Winer has also sold http://Weblogs.com to Verisign for a rumored price of around $2 million. Blog entrepreneur Nick Denton, founder of Gawker Media has signed a deal with VNU Media to publish Gizmodo (gadget blog) across Europe in six languages. VNU Media is a leading worldwide information and media company which owns ACNielsen, Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, among others. With this deal, blog publishing has hit big time.

However, the value of a blog is not calculated based solely on links using AOL's purchase of Weblogs Inc. Jason Calacanis, the man behind Weblogs Inc., disputed using links alone as proxy for the value of the blog network. He reiterated that the acquisition price was based also on the ever reliable revenue, earnings, management and other metrics.

Tristan Louis based his valuation scheme on links to a blog but he also acknowledged the significance of technology, talented management team, financial performance and growth. There is direct correlation between links, traffic, revenue and earnings capacity of a blog or blog network but it takes sound management to maximize all these potentials.

Value of a Blog -- Some Metrics to Consider

How much is your blog worth? There is no one standard gauge yet. But one way to measure the value is to look at certain factors to gain a better perspective on how to measure the future value of a blog.

Aside from number of links as mentioned earlier, traffic level is a key factor in determining blog value. Highly trafficked blogs definitely have a bigger potential for earning compared with those blogs with few readership. A blog's success is highly dependent on visitors/readers. However, ascertaining the value of traffic is a thorny issue. Some bloggers value traffic anywhere from $3 to $10 per hit a day. From this data, a blog with 2000 unique visitors (page views) would be worth between $6000 to $20,000. The downside to this valuation approach is that some traffic is more valuable than others. A personal blog might have 1000 unique visitors but more difficult to convert to revenue than a blog with 1000 readers that blogs on the topic of digital cameras.

Aside from diverse traffic streams that come from bookmarks, direct links or RSS subscribers will make risk of losing traffic low. Social bookmarking sites are inching their way to becoming prime sources of traffic, with peer referral at times carrying more weight than search results. There are a number of well known bookmarking sites you should link to. Top bookmarking sites include Furl, http://del.icio.us, Diggs, to name a few. By leaving an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed, you can feed you readers' desire for information. Visitors can get automatic updates whenever you provide new content. Having a fairly good base of bookmarkers and subscribers ensure a steady flow of fans and repeat readers -- the all-important traffic.

In the blogosphere as in any other field, revenue or earnings is a major focus. a logical approach to blog valuation would be to base its worth upon current and projected earnings, assuming that your blog is earning something to start with. Again, there are varying views on how to use current earnings to measure a blog's value.

Some bloggers opine you should expect six to eight months earnings as your blog value. A blog with a daily income of $150 would be worth between $27,000 - $36,000. Still, others determine a blog's value as being two years of current earnings. A blog earning $150 a day would be worth $108,000. Again, there is a huge disparity between these methods of assessing value. Having diverse streams in the form of multiple affiliate programs also increases blog revenue. An affiliate program is an advertising model in which a blog owner markets via his blog a given product, on behalf of another company. The blog owner is reimbursed a percentage of all sales sold thru his affiliate link. Reimbursement rates can vary from 1% and upwards. Google Adsense is a prime example.

Visitors access blogs throughout the Internet primarily through search engines. If your blog does not have a post appearing in the top ten search engine rankings, the chances of visitors reaching your blog is low. A blog's presence on relevant search engines is a significant medium for maintaining a blog's success. Search engine ranking and pages indexed in search engines is critical for generating traffic to a blog. Having your blog among the top results of a search or receiving a high Google PageRank (a system for ranking blog posts) would increase your blog's overall value.

High quality content will always be a key factor for determining a blog's value. As has been said time and time again -- Content is King. Moreover, search engines can only "read" a blog. What attracts a search engine are the words, the content of a blog that explains, informs, shares and educates readers. Good content increases blog value.

All these aforementioned objective metrics can be considered in assessing the value of a blog. Added to all these, a talented management team behind a blog, its underlying tools and blog technology in use can further help to estimate the future value of a blog. <bio>http://www.theinternetone.net </bio>

The United States Department of Labor believes that by the year 2025 up to two-thirds of all Americans could be working from home. Many will be employed by companies using workers, while numerous others will have started their own jobs.

Yes; most people love to work at home and make money. They have several different reasons:

- They can start working whenever they like. - They can stop working when they feel tired or think that need a break. - There is no one looking over their shoulders or telling them what to do. - They can work as much as they like and make more money.

So people love to work at home but there are some serious questions: What is a good, reliable and legitimate work at home job? or How to start working from home? What to sell? What to promote? How to use internet to promote a work at home program? and ... .

For most people work at home jobs mean working online with internet and through the world wide web. In fact internet is the best tool to be in touch with the world from your bed room while you kids are playing under your nose.

If you join one or a few legitimate work at home job opportunities, learn how to promote them through the web, you can really make money. To do that, you need to learn how to distinguish good and reliable work at home programs from the bad and scam ones.

If you are new to this and you are serious to have some extra income from home or your are even more serious and intend to quit your full time job in near future, the golden rule is "Do Not rush and do not join any program offered to you at least for a few months." What should you do so?

Just read and learn for while. Participate in forums, discussion boards, online communities, sign up for newsletters, visit the related websites and weblogs, read, compare, think and ask others who know more than you about this business and have been involved in it at least for a few years.

Do not invest any money in any program that you find over the web. If they are free to join and they don't ask for information like your credit card number, you can join and see what they will teach you and what you should do to make money through their program. But if they have any membership fee, avoid them.

Spend some time to learn about internet marketing and online advertising methods and learn how other promote their products, services and online business. Learn a little about websites, domains and web hosting services because having a website is one of the best and most important tools in internet business. Read success stories and learn from others' experiences before you learn by spending and losing your own time and money.

Some of the best newsletters that I can suggest is the SirLook Multiple Streams of Income newsletter at http://simc.sirlook.com. They publish their newsletter regularly and will give you lots of good and free information plus several impressive success stories that you will enjoy reading them. Unsubscribe form newsletters that try to sell several different products to you everyday. Most newsletter publishers try to make more money and earn more commission without giving any good information to their subscribers.

Another good resource is the http://www.scam.com. It is the best forum to learn about scam work at home and internet business opportunities.

You can find good information in on weblogs too. Some weblogs are so informative and helpful - although most of them try to make more money by any means.

After you made sure that you have learnt enough about the work at home online jobs, choose the best and most reliable program and join it and start working. Try to join the programs that have been working at least for a few years. All the programs work perfectly during the first months but most of them will be disappeared suddenly just after a few or maximum few months. Generally programs that look too good and talk about making thousands of dollars per month, are not reliable. <bio>Paul Wagler is a successful internet marketer. T

he ranks of so-called pro bloggers are still quite small, and there are very few people who make their living entirely off of their blogs. However, every day there are more and more people who have managed to turn their weblogs into cash cows that supplement their income. The number of pro bloggers is growing by leaps and bounds, but it is difficult to say whether this trend will continue.

Many bloggers dream of entering the sphere of professional blogging. There are very few people who happily devote an hour or more each day to their blog without at least occasionally wishing that they could earn some kind of financial reward for all of their work.

Several models exist for making money with a blog, the most popular being to sell advertising space through Google's AdSense program or directly to a company that wishes to reach the demographic that your blog appeals to. However, there are very few people indeed who can make a comfortable living just by selling space on their blog sidebars. Setting up AdSense on your Blog is a breeze, and you can complete the whole process in less then an hour. Free $97 Adsense Secret Ebook on Adsense Tips here.

A lot of the people who read weblogs are bloggers themselves, in part because of the fact that the people who use blogging technology on a daily basis are most likely to be interested in what other writers are doing with the medium.

This fact begins to explain why the people who succeed in the world of professional blogging are mostly people who have devoted themselves almost entirely to learning about, talking about, and writing about blogging. More than any other topic, pro bloggers turn their attention to the phenomenon of blogging itself. A lot of pro bloggers make the topic of blogging the stunningly self-reflexive ongoing focus of their blogs.

Of course, professional blogging is destined to become much more complicated in the future than it is today. In the current moment, pro bloggers who attract the largest audiences and make the most money are mostly concerned with investigating the blogging movement and with offering advice to amateur bloggers. Most people can make their AdSense Blog sites veritable cash cows!
A Ping is a basic Internet program that allows for verification of the existence of a particular IP address. This is used to ensure that the host computer intended to be reached is actually operating. Recent developments have caused people to abandon their existing Ping community and standards which threaten to alter the positive outlook for Ping.

What is Ping All About?

In December 1983, Mike Muuss wrote a program used as a tool to troubleshoot peculiar behavior on an IP network. He named it "ping" after the pulses of sound made by a sonar. Its operation is considered analogous to active sonar in submarines wherein an operator issues a pulse of energy at the target which would then bounce back and be received by the operator. An acronym was provided by David Mills to mean "Packet Internet Grouper" and by other people as "Packed Internet Gopher".

Its usefulness in terms of assisting the diagnosis of connectivity issue in the Internet was undermined when several Internet service providers filtered out echo request messages at their network boundaries. The use of Ping for target reconnaissance by Internet worms in locating new hosts to infect is partly to be blamed. Another factor that might have contributed to the situation is the resulting over all load on networks due to the wide availability of Ping responses.

The Ping utility has its unique use being essentially a system administrator's tool to determine if a computer is working or if network connections are intact. Ping uses the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo function to send a small packet through the network to a particular IP address. The computer that sent the packet waits for a return packet. A good return packet will be received if the connections are good and the target computer is up. However, it is indicative of a problem with the matching of the name and the IP address when a packet bounces back. An extended period of time used up for the round trip is likewise indicative of a problem. Ping can also determine the number of hops that lie between two computers and the amount of time it takes for a packet to make a complete trip.

There are some things that Ping cannot tell. Ping may not be able to always provide the reasons why packets go unanswered. Neither can it tell why or where a packet was damaged, delayed or duplicated. A detailed description of every host that handled the packet and the details that happened along the way cannot be provided by Ping.

Dropped packets are usually detected through a skip in the sequence numbers and such number does not appear again. The probable causes for this are a queue that grew too large and link-level failures. Fluctuating round trip times are caused by the same things responsible for packet loss. Connectivity that comes and goes may be caused by problems in the router.

The negative creation of the Ping is the so-called Ping of Death that essentially crashes a system by sending a Ping packet larger than 65,536 bytes. An IP datagram of this size usually cannot be sent but perpetrators apparently chop the packet into small pieces when it is sent down the line and have it rebuilt at its destination. The sheer size of the packet causes the buffer to overflow and results to a reboot or a hang among others.

The Ping Outlook

Ping-O-Matic is the only remaining large-scale and independent Ping relay service left with the purchase of http://Weblogs.com by Verisign. The purchase has been received by some quarters with skepticism due to Verisign's supposedly checkered history in the blogosphere. All major content producers and companies relying on this specific Ping stream are considerably wary of this move.

Weblogs.com was widely perceived to be a service that has stagnated and a business that has declined. It is believed to have attempted to monetize what should otherwise be a public service. Users who got frustrated with the situation have chosen to abandon their existing Ping community and opted to produce their own feeds. There is a need to get competing services to work together so that no one gets to successfully exploit the situation.

There are those that believe that http://Weblogs.com under Verisign may not be the solution to the existing problem in the Ping community but views it as a start of better things to come. However, there should be an entity having the resources and the ability to command respect among the tech companies being served that would run it. The cooperation of those that have extensive experience with it can only work to benefit the community as a whole.

The bleak outlook of Ping persisting at this time can be attributed to the fact that it is impossible to leave doors open on the web and not have it abused. The traffic gained by blog searches can all expect the same spam problems being experienced by other areas of the web. The problem will only worsen unless some barriers are put into place. It is also very difficult to come up with an algorithmic way to stop Ping spam. Clearly, the problem is not only about one entity purchasing a particular service.

Major search players such as Google and Yahoo! are expected to move to a combination of rapid crawling, trusted Pings and open Pings as a back up. Since they are able to get news content very fast, they can concentrate on spidering and hammering their trusted sites. They know the major blogs that really matter and be able to discover links from blogs as quickly as possible.

Another way is to have people enroll to come up with trusted Pings. Proper identification through signing up can be used to determine whose Pings are to be taken in and penalize those who abuse it. A redistribution of trusted Ping feeds by major players would be ideal but is almost next to impossible since they don't share web crawling data. Major blog services will most probably continue to be trusted while others might take Pings for third party servers.

Some aver that the real surprise is seeing how open pinging has managed to survive this long. There are ways to be done to tackle spam such as through the machine learning algorithm and the like. It would probably be best to open the Pings up to the community and let them fix it.

Technorati, Bloglines and Feedster are all closed systems and Pings sent to them are only available to their service. Some are hoping to see an open system of notification and proposes Feedmaster to achieve it. It hopes to allow a wide variety of new services to be able to focus on getting into the stream of updates. At present, the various players are still actively participating but whether or not there is indeed a future for Ping would depend on how they act individually as competitors and as common participants in one community. <bio>http://www.theinternetone.net </bio>

It is confirmed. The Blogosphere continues to grow at a pace no one has anticipated. In fact, it would be very difficult to quote a number as the total tends to change by the second of every day.

The Blogosphere Report

According to the State of the Blogosphere report as of February 2006, Technorati is tracking 27.2 million <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/weblogs" rel="tag">weblogs and is expected to double about every 5.5 months. The Blogosphere as it is at present is estimated to be over 60 times bigger than it was three years ago. New blog creation is placed at over 75,000 new weblogs everyday which translate to an average of one weblog created every second. It has also been noted that 13.7 million bloggers are still posting three months after its blog creation. This sends a clear message that blogging is becoming a habitual activity.

The report on the Blogosphere growth made in October 2005, showed Technorati tracking 19.6 million weblogs which was expected to double every five months. During this time, there were about 70,000 new weblogs created everyday and that the blogosphere was estimated to be over 30 times as big as three years prior to the report. A comparison between these two recent reports would show that the blogosphere growth is showing no signs of letting-up at the present. Reports prior to that of October 2005 will support this thinking.

While growth brings its benefits as well as its downside, the increasing popularity of blogs brought with it the proliferation of "spings" or spam pings. These are fake or bogus notifications that a blog has been updated. It is believed that it accounts for as much as 60% of the total pings received by Technorati. This prompted the development of a sophisticated system that mitigates the spings and helps keep spam blogs out of their indexes. Technorati's efforts on working against this problem are continuous and in cooperation with other players such as Google, Yahoo! and others. Another aspect of the problem is the considerable percentage of new blogs that are either spam, machine-generated or attempts to create link farms or click fraud.

There are about 1.2 million posts made each day and a number of spikes in posting volume are generally seen during major news events. It has become impossible to read all the relevant posts to an issue or subject due to the sheer number of choices. Again, a challenge has been presented as to how to find the most interesting and most authoritative information in a monstrous sea of conversation.

This problem is being sought to be countered through the use of tagging. This is essentially a simple way for bloggers to categorize their posts to assist the searchers in their quest for the right information. There are thousands of categories that have been created to attract influential bloggers to write while more are created everyday to provide the most comprehensive coverage for the reader's varied needs and requirements.

Most blogs are personal but many of which feature the new influences of consumer decisions. These are the consumers that provide feedback about large brands ranging from positive raves of product excellence to rants about the latest product recall. These have prompted more businesses to consider the relevance of maintaining a blog as part of their regular activities. With so much freedom and availability of on-line information or misinformation, any business would benefit from having their own conversation forum for their brands, products and services to protect their reputation. Blogs provide the chance to give the other side of the story especially for businesses that are on siege with negative feedback.

The Blogosphere Statistics

In the year 2004, which was considered the Year of the Blog, some interesting facts came to the fore with regards to blog readership. A very sharp increase was noted during the most part of the year despite the fact that most American Internet users have no clear idea about blogs. The increase in interest was evident on both the creation and demand sides.

The surge in blog creation and readership was partly credited to the fact that 2004 was an election year in the U.S. with a highly divided electorate. The concentration was on political blogs which spilled over into other areas. Spikes on blog activities were readily seen during Iowa's caucuses, the beheading of Nicholas Berg and the Southeast Asian Tsunami catastrophe, among others. Blog traffic tends to spike sharply when certain web-communicable events occur.

In a survey conducted during the same year, it was found out that 57% of bloggers are male, 48% are under 30 years of age, 82% have on-line experience for six years or more, 42% live in households earning over $50,000 income annually, 70% have broadband connection at home and 39% have college or graduate degrees. It was also the year that the conversational dynamics of blogs caught on. A considerable percentage of American Internet users have posted comments or other materials on blogs and are regular blog readers. The more active bloggers update their blogs regularly resulting to more than 275,000 posts daily or approximately 11,000 updates an hour.

In the same breath, there seems to be some initial data that says less than 10% of women are political bloggers and approximately 20% only of blog readers are women. There also seems to be a belief that the blogosphere is elite because of the qualifications of most of its bloggers as well as its readers. Its present composition however, may not exactly agree with the said data as gender and educational background have long ceased to be exclusive factors to be considered. Generally, as long as someone has something to say or contribute, the blogosphere will always welcome him/her with open arms.

Several other studies indicate that most blogs are abandoned soon after creation and that only a few are updated regularly. The average lifespan of a blog is very short. Most blogs do not even reach 100 days while some gets abandoned after a year or more. A typical blog would be one that is written by a teenager updating friends of daily happenings in his/her life. The tone would be very informal with no particular concern for form and spelling.

With the phenomenal popularity of blogs, some are quick to point out that it is about to reach its peak and suffer the same fate as an outdated fashion. Blogs' attraction can be largely attributed to the novelty attached to it, but it can be tiring when overdone. Bloggers should look for that balance where frequency and relevance come together.

Blogging may be replaced sometime in the future by some technical innovations. That is just the way it is in modern technology. The good thing about it is that some things like the need to converse with another would remain. So even if blogging goes, a better alternative would surely come that would serve the same purpose, but definitely in an improved way. <bio>http://www.theinternetone.net </bio>

I was reading through some posts on other websites the other day. There was a hot topic about how to get traffic to your site, and I thought I'd share some of the things that people said, beacuse I've done it for my sites, and noticed that this particular course of action worked for me as well.

There are so many different so-called "easy" ways to get traffic, that it's pretty ridiculous. All you have to do is type the word "web traffic" into Google, and you'll get a host of different programs, websites, ebooks, etc, telling you how to do it. You'll get bombared with ads for PPC, banners, link exchanges, FFAs, newsgroups, etc.

And the thing about it is this: Most of them do not work. Let me repeat that in big letters to override that 36-point type you read on that web page that says, "We'll Get You Traffic In 24 Hours, Guaranteed" along with the testimonials that were probably made up: THEY DO NOT WORK!!!

So you ask: what does work? How can I get traffic to my site?

If you haven't read my first two articles on content, you can read them at my new blog here at axalda.info/blog. Excuse the mess in the blog though, because it's a work in progress.

But outside of content, we're going to take a minute, and talk about promotion. What do you have to do to get consistent traffic coming to your site?

I'm going to break this up into a multi-part series. I know that I have another series that I'm putting together as well on Adsense sites in general. I promise, that's still coming as well. But for now, let's talk traffic...

I am assuming that you've picked a Adsense topic already. If not, I offer a free Adsense keyword list, updated every 2 weeks. To get it free, go to www.axalda.info/topkeywords.html and check out the 500 Top keywords, absolutely free. It'll give you an idea about what's hot and what's not.

1. Get a good domain name for your site. Your site should have your Adsense keyowrd in the site. It will give it relevance, and give your site credibility if it's found VIA a search engine. Is it important? If you can get a domain name that reflects the keyword, you should try to get it, but if you can't, it will probably only hurt you in search engine relevance in the future steps of your promotional traffic plan, as you'll see later.

2. Blog it, baby! You got content? Then you need to blog it (for the time being). I recommend WordPress to do your blog. It seems to be the favorite of people in the blogging community.

Now the thing about blogging your content is this, and WordPress makes this especially handy. You need to ley others know you have new content in your blog. And WordPress does that automatically (for the most part) everytime I write a new blog entry. It does what is called a "ping". A ping is a prompt sent to other websites that tracks the updates of blogs. There are about 50 blog ping sites that are worth adding to your blog ping list in WordPress (or whatever blog software you are using). This is a list that I use:

The reason why you are seting up a blog is to let others know about your content. You goal is to post new content at least 2-3 times a week. Do that consistently for the next 9-10 weeks, and watch your traffic start to jump! It's work, but it's worth it, and it gives you and your site credibility for now, and for the future.

Till Next Time, Keep Building!

Gary <bio>Gary Hollins is a writer for http://www.axalda.info..
There are many reasons you might want to change what you do for a living and work from home. First of all, you have to consider all of the time that you are spending at your current job, and what it is doing to the rest of your life. If you find that you are working all of the time, and never getting a chance to have a break, you might want to figure out a way to get a new job. You might want to consider working from home, or even changing jobs so that you are working somewhere closer to home, or somewhere that allows you to work less hours. If you aren't happy with your job, there are many things that you could find that might make you happier.

One of the best places to look for jobs is on the internet. You can go to a weblog and use it to discover many things about the jobs that you are interested in. For starters, you can get an idea of what others in your field are doing and how it is affecting them. There are discussions on each business opportunity weblog relating to the prices that people charge for different services, to everything from finding new jobs to making your old job better.

A business opportunity weblog might just be the best way that you can find to learn more about the job you are interested in and the way it is going to be going.
Importance of Navigation

According to an article written by Jacob Nielsen, typical user behavior shows that users almost always ignore navigation areas of a web page and look straight at the content. He asserts that "navigation is overdone on many sites" and that most users are extremely goal driven and do not understand nor spend time learning navigation and global design elements of a website but will click the back button in a few seconds if the page does not seem to contain the information they need.

If users therefore value content far above navigation bars and design does it mean that navigation is meaningless or useless? The answer is of course no. Users do need a way to go around your website and access the information they need and that is what navigation elements do; it connects the different parts of your website and provides a way for users to get from one part to another. Without navigation elements, visitors will get stuck on one page and not be able to access all the information they need. A good website will never do away with navigation elements but will make sure that it is designed in such a way that it will be very usable and helpful to the users instead of retracting from the page's usability.

When designing a web site navigation system it is important to remember that your web site is designed for your visitors and not for just for you, a few friends, or search engines. If the web site is designed for visitors then the navigation system should address their needs, and what visitors need is information. A good navigation system will always try to lead the visitors to the information they need with the smallest number of steps. Remember that navigation is simply the use of images and/or text to guide a visitor through your website and help the visitor go where he needs to go. A navigation system should always guide and help visitors because if they don't do that then the system is useless.

Tips for a Useful Navigation System

Navigation leads to reduced usability when it is overdone. As Nielsen said usability is affected when each page in the website is linked to every other single page. Usability is also affected when there are too much links on the bottom of the page leading to meta-features. To ensure that your website's navigation will be helpful to visitors and not be meaningless here are a few tips for a good website navigation system.

1. Make use of structural navigation. As mentioned earlier, do not link to all the parts of the website from every page. Instead simply provide links to all the levels of hierarchy above the current page. Although visitors usually ignore structural links they are still helpful to visitors who find themselves in a page that contains related but not the exact information they need. The presence of structural links will enable them to go directly to a higher level of the site which is a page containing more general information about the topic they need and which most probably has links to more specific information about the topic they need.

2. Have local links to the current page's related content. As mentioned in tip number one, visitors often do not land on the exact information they need when they get to, especially if they got there via search engines. However, the information they need IS usually found in the website but on another page. Having links to related content will help them get to the exact page containing the information they need. Examples of good links will be previous articles or new clips about the same topic.

3. Place your navigation system on the left or on the top, just below the header. This is usually the place where navigation systems can be found and most visitors will turn to left and top area if they need to navigate through your website. This is simply because it is what they are used to doing. So unless you are very sure of what you are doing stick to the conventional design to avoid confusing visitors.

4. Be consistent. If your navigation system is found on the left always have it on the left, or wherever it is you choose to put it. Doing otherwise would be extremely confusing to visitors. Make sure that you link categories are also consistent. Structural links will of course be different for each page but if made use of should always be present and at the same area of the page.

Navigation in Blogs

The above tips will help all kinds of websites improve their navigation system. Weblogs, however, are special and mostly "accessibility challenged". Weblogs' navigations systems are usually inadequate. According to an article on Weblog Usability, two of the top ten design mistakes are that blogs often use the calendar or a timeline as the only navigation tool and that classic hits (popular articles) are often buried in the archive. Using a timeline as the only navigation tool is very inefficient and almost always useless in pointing visitors to the information they need. Visitors after all do not have any idea when you posted about certain topics. Both of the design mistakes signify the need for a better navigation system in blogs.

A more useful navigation tool would be categories. Categories should be detailed but not too many making the list too long and difficult for visitors to scan. For those who write about many and varied topics ten to twenty categories ought to be sufficient with less for those with less topics. When tagging posts make sure that the post isn't tagged for too many categories or else categorizing your posts would be useless then.

Having links to your more popular posts is also smart since your posts deserve to be read by visitors other than your regular readers. Having direct links to your popular posts will also help new visitors get acquainted with your blog and hopefully encourage them to come back and be regular visitors.

There should also be links to your other recent articles or latest posts, especially if your posts have a continuing theme. Do not assume that all your visitors are regulars and would know the context of your current post. Having links to previous posts will help visitors understand more about your current post.

However, even if you use categories, have links to your popular and previous recent posts, and follow the tips for a useful navigation system there is still much room for improvement when it comes to accessibility of information in blogs. A good discussion about surrounding the problems and possible solutions about accessibility can <bio>http://www.theinternetone.net </bio>

Over the past week, there has been a lot of discussion about the "SEO is/isn't rocket science" debate. Although this issue has been around for years, the spark that brought it back to life can be traced back to the Search Engine Strategies Conference and Expo in Chicago. During the Search Engines Strategies Conference in Chicago, which took place from December 4th through the 6th, Jason Calcanis (the cofounder of Weblogs Inc) completely wrote search engine optimization off as a complete waste of money and resources. His philosophy is that if you build a clean page and great content, the traffic and rankings will follow naturally.

This statement caused quite a stir among not only the audience (which was primarily made up of a bunch of SEOs) but also the search engine optimization community as a whole. Angry blog posts were flying up left and right, and there was not a lack of great discussion on both sides of the issue.

At the beginning of January, Shoemoney made the statement on his radio show and blog that ninety-five percent of search engine optimization is "super simple" and the other five percent is what really matters in the world of SEO.

After all this various discussion, Todd Friesen (aka Oilman) decided to write an excellent blog post to address all of these various issues. Although he does not update his blog very often, the posts he does write are always well thought out. This particular post helped to give the SEO community some perspective on this issue. Even though ninety-five percent of search engine optimization may be extremely easy for someone who does it on a daily basis, it is still a complete mystery to ninety-nine percent of the population. The purpose of his post can be summed up by the idea that instead of spending time arguing within the SEO community, we need to realize that there is an entire world full of people who probably don't even know what the term SEO means. <bio>The article was written to help conduct an experiment on the usefulness of article submissions for indexing sub domains like http://4.tylerbanfield.com </bio>

And with the growing number of spam blocking devices, come the also growing number of spamming geniuses who find new ways to annoy us.

Bloggers are the newest victims. Their comments boxes are flooded with special offers of all sorts, from Viagra to salary loans. Their impact has also compounded that of email spam content because they can only be taken out one by one, as opposed to email spam where we can just click several at a time to delete. What a hassle!

Spammers started off by individually posting their advertisements on blogs.
