It is about communications and the multiple ways of communicating through radio waves.

What most people do not know about this hobby and the people that are operators is that they are one of the most used groups as means of emergency communication, when other conventional means of communications fail, in a disaster situation for example.

Local communications is one of the first things to go away in case of a disaster such as hurricanes or tornadoes. Phones and electricity go down and the only thing left is amateur radio operators that can operate from a battery and a piece of wire for an antenna.

These operators have networks set up all over the world that can be immediately activated and used to coordinate disaster relief activities. Recent examples include the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, when amateurs worked weeks side by side with rescue crews supplying communications.

Amateur operators were also involved this last year in all the hurricanes that we had all over the world. They have been watching and reporting the advance of the storms, setting up nets to pass traffic for rescue groups as well as passing health and welfare traffic to people trying the get in touch with relatives in the stricken area. They carry a message out to someone that says we are ok and we are alive and that is always great.

The National Weather Service might have great radars, but a radar can't see the storms like human eyes can. Just ask someone that works for the weather service about the role of radio operators and you will get one answer- they are the "eyes" of the National Weather Service. They are on duty any time that there are storms in the area. Any time of day and night these people are watching storms and reporting what they see.

Their accurate reports can be used immediately by the weather service and further by the local radio and TV stations which broadcast the reported data to the public.

Amateur radio operators are saving thousands of lives each year, yet this gets almost no recognition. And the kicker is that their service is at no cost to the public. As mentioned before, amateur radio is a personal hobby; this means the operators buy all their own radio equipment.

And they use it for public safety. Whenever needed to warn the public of danger.

Are they heroes? Think about it. <bio>My name is Harry.
With the way that the world has been getting blasted by storms lately one may have to reconsider what it is that they are doing to protect themselves and their houses. One item to consider very well could be hurricane shutters. For a long time people have been using shutters as a means of keeping the weather out of your home. This dates back to ancient Rome where shutters were used before glass was placed in windows to keep the weather out. Today many shutters are used as accessories or decorations on a home as opposed to being used for protection, but this may be changing. With the advent of so many storms lately and the large amount of damage that they are causing one may be more strongly considering the purchase and installation of this protection for their home.

Hurricane shutters are shutters that are very helpful in that they will protect your home from many of the flying debris from not only a hurricane, but just about any storm that comes up. These are designed to protect your windows as well as your home from storm damage. Another item that one may want to consider when they are looking for protection from storms would be storm windows. In many homes where there is a single pane window they may have option of installing storm windows which would give a second layer of protection. These items will both work very well in protecting the large investment that you call your home as well as the things that you keep inside of it since it will keep the storm on the outside.

These are things that one must take into account as well when they are home building for the future. Think of where the location is and what the history has been in regards to the severity of storms and how often that they occur. Of course you could just play the safety and have either the shutters or windows installed when the house is being built. This will allow for the ultimate in protection as well as allow for the occupant to feel safe and secure since these items will always be there. As far as the shutters are concerned you can always make more aesthetically pleasing by choosing a color that is appropriate for the color scheme of the home as well as decorate them to look as if they are more natural as opposed to simple safety additions. <bio>Linden Walhard pens principally for http://www.shades-blinds-shutters-guide.com , an online publication covering information on storm windows and home building.
Do you wish you had a garage to place your car in so that you can protect it from that summer sun and also protect it from the snow and ice in the winter? Many individuals wish such things because they hate it when they see their car getting pummeled by the elements. A car is a large investment, so it is heartbreaking when it has to go through what the weather inflicts on it. Such weather events as ice storms and hail storms can do large amounts of immediate damage to a car. As for the sun, it damages the car's clear coat and paint over time.

The solution

Fortunately, there is a solution to those long mornings of scraping ice off of your windshield or shoveling snow off your car and that is steel carports. You may wonder how steel carports can offer such protection since it a carport more or less consists of a roof that is held up by four posts, but you would be surprised. Here is what steel carports will do for you:

- You preserve the clear coat and paint of your car in the summer.

- Your car is protected from those summer hail storms.

- You receive some protection from blowing debris during wind storms.

- Your car is protected from ice storms in the winter.

- The scraping of ice from your windows is minimal in the winter.

- You do not have to worry about large amounts of snow accumulating on your car.

Those are ways in which steel carports make your life easier. And to think that nothing will ever happen to your car is naïve thinking. If you own a car for five to ten years, then you know something is going to happen to it. Some individuals own their cars for just a matter of days or weeks before something such as a major weather event causes damage. Don't let that be you.

Convenience

Steel carports are affordable and they are durable. They don't involve a team of construction workers to put up. You have the option of erecting your carport on your own or having others do it. It will be up in no time so that you can park your car under it as soon as possible.

Just think...you will no longer have to spend fifteen minutes of your mornings scraping ice and knocking snow off of your windows. Having to do such a task is not fun, let alone when you're already running late for work or for an appointment. We tend to forget that we have to do these things in the winter. Steel carports keep these tasks to a minimum. Another thing to take into consideration is the fact that protecting your car's exterior means that you are preserving the value of your car. You're minimizing the chance for external damage, which can hurt the resale or trade-in value of your car. So not only are you protecting your car, but you are also saving yourself money on future purchases. Those savings can either meet or exceed the cost of the carport, which means you're coming out ahead on the monetary end of things.

So now you see that there is a plethora of advantages to steel carports and that you need one if your car is sitting in your driveway without any type of protection. It beats having to use a tarp or car cover for your car everyday. Then again, something such as that doesn't protect it from hail and ice storms and can be a pain to have to remove after a winter snow. So save yourself time and money by investing in one of the many steel carports available to you.<bio>Leader provider of steel carports and garages .
Like most of the Costa Blanca region, Benidorm weather is favourable for most of the year. The city is surrounded by mountains that offer natural protection from the cold north winds. This gives the area a favourable climate even in the winter months.

Benidorm has what is known as a typical Mediterranean climate. A Mediterranean climate has long, hot summers and a moderate winter. The autumn and spring temperatures are generally warm. Summer is the most popular time to visit the area. The hot weather and infrequent rain make it a perfect time for the beach.

Benidorm Weather in Spring and Summer

May through October is the most popular time to visit the Costa Blanca. The Spring in this region has mild, sunny weather. Most days are warm and sunny, with very little rain. In the Spring months the high temperatures range from 16 to 21 degrees Celsius. The low temperatures range from 9 to 14 degrees Celsius.

Some people choose Spring for their Benidorm vacations. The weather is beautiful. The temperatures are cooler than in the summer, but are still comfortable and warm for spending time outdoors. This is particularly true in the later Spring. If you want to enjoy the sun and warm weather, but want to avoid the crowds, consider taking your vacation in Spring.

The area is known for long, hot summers. The average high temperatures for the summer months range from 15 to 27 degrees Celsius. August is the hottest month in the area, with temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) not uncommon. The temperatures cool somewhat in the evenings. The average over night temperatures range from 18 to 21 degrees Celsius.

The summer is the hottest season and best for beaches. It can also be very busy and crowded during the summer months, as this is when most people visit the area. If you plan to travel in the summer months, you will want to reserve your flight, hotel and car hire well in advance. Waiting too long could leave you with limited options.

Benidorm Weather in Autumn and Winter

Although this area doesn't get much rain, Autumn is the rainy season. This is the least popular time to visit the Costa Blanca. Larger rain storms are not uncommon. In some cases, flooding happens at this time of the year. Electrical storms are quite common, especially in September.

The temperatures in autumn remain mild. The average high temperatures in the fall are between 16 and 25 degrees Celsius. The night temperatures drop to between 11 and 19 degrees Celsius. Rain storms often happen at night.

This area is known for mild winters, compared to many areas of Europe. For this reason, Benidorm is a popular winter destination for Northern Europeans looking to get away from the colder temperatures. The area is also popular among retired persons. Many come to Benidorm for the entire winter and return home in the Spring.

The winter temperatures are very mild and snow almost never falls. The average high temperatures in the winter months range from 12 to 14 degrees Celsius. This is still warm enough for a round of golf or relaxing outside. At night, the temperature drops. The average night time temperatures range from 6 to 8 degrees Celsius. There is very little rain in the winter months. <bio>Robert Carlton usually creates long articles on issues dealing with Spain and Costa Blanca. The temperatures during this season are from around 50 to 70 degrees.

The average temperature for the summer is between 60 to 80 degrees, with August usually being the hottest of summer months, going up to over 100 degrees at times. For this reason you'll want to plan your trip well in advance for the summer months. This includes planning your flight, reserving your hotel, and reserving your car rental as well.
Each year, exposure to cold, vehicle accidents caused by wintry roads, and fires caused by the improper use of heaters injure and kill hundreds of people in the United States. Add these to other winter weather hazards and you have a significant threat to human health and safety.

Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, wind-driven snow that lasts for several days. Some winter storms are large enough to affect several states, while others affect only a single community. Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, icing, sleet, and freezing rain.

How to Protect Yourself in Winter Storms

Winter storms are considered deceptive killers because most winter storm deaths are related only indirectly to the storms. Overall, most winter storm deaths result from vehicle or other transportation accidents caused by ice and snow. You should avoid driving when conditions include sleet, freezing rain or drizzle, snow, or dense fog. These are serious conditions, that are often underestimated, and they make driving and even walking outside very hazardous.

Make an Emergency Disaster Preparedness Plan with you family and review it every six months. Each member of the family should know what to do in case of an emergency, know where Survival Kits are kept and know how evacuate or shelter in place as the situation dictates.

If, you are evacuated go to a designated public shelter. Take any Emergency Disaster Preparedness supplies that you have with you so that you have enough food and water to last for at least 72 hours.

For information on designated shelters, contact your local emergency management office or American Red Cross chapter.

Don't Forget Those with Special Needs

You must not forget those with special needs such as infants and seniors and those unable to care for themselves. If someone on your list has physical needs and you may be unable to check on this person, appoint someone to check on them and report to you their status and condition.

Make sure that anyone with special needs has the items they would normally need to survive, such as adult/infant diapers, medical supplies, special foods and/or medications. If there is anyone that needs electricity to survive, like a respirator, be prepared with an alternative source such as a power generator. Also, it is a good idea to notify your local fire department (via a non-emergency business telephone number) in advance of this person's needs. They will do everything in their power to commit resources to this type of special need. Anyone with special needs or a disability should wear a medical alert tag or bracelet to help identify their individual situation.

Don't Forget a Plan for Your Pets

Due to health regulations, most emergency shelters cannot house animals. Find out in advance how to care for your pets and working animals when disaster or emergency strikes. You should not leave your pets behind. For more information, visit the Animal Safety section on www.redcross.org or visit the Humane Society Web site at www.hsus.org.

Preparing in advance will help you make informed decisions in the event of inclement weather, a disaster or an emergency. So make a disaster plan today and get prepared to survive. <bio>http://www.survivalkitsonline.com has a complete line of Emergency Disaster Preparedness kits and supplies that are safe, reliable and affordable. We offer customized kits with personalized logos. </bio>

Equilibrium is the key for proper maintenance of the complex system that is the Earth's atmosphere. A great deal of heat builds up in the tropical latitudes due to the Earths revolution in its orbit around the sun and its rotation on its tilted axis. This immense heat gets dissipated to the latitudes in the middle by way of tropical storms. Hurricane is the name of the tropical storms that are the most powerful. At the west of the International Date Line these storms are called typhoons while in Australia and around the Indian Ocean they are known as the cyclones.

The Tropical storms originate at a band known as the intertropical convergence zone over warm waters that characterize this zone. An optimal of above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, surface temperatures of the sea is essential. Thunderstorms clusters are formed when areas of large clouds evaporate due to evaporation and convection. The strength of Coriolis effect that's required to initiate rotation occurs if the formation of these storms take place 10 degrees or above from the equator approximately.

The winds get stronger and the spin increases in speed as the whole storm system rotates away from the equator. The system will be classified as a when winds reach As wind speed reaches 74 miles per hour and 39 miles per hour, the system gets classified as hurricane and tropical storm respectively.

Eye of the Storm

One of the most powerful and destructive of nature's storms is the Hurricane. But in maintaining a balance in the atmosphere these destructive tropical storms play an irreplaceable role. The eye of the hurricane that is right at the center of the hurricane is an area of calm and has the lowest pressure point.

Although a violent sea is always a possibility, yet predominately clear skies and calm weather characterizes the eye of the storm. On the surface the storm's coldest temperature is prevalent in the eye while on the higher altitudes the temperature gets warmer. The shape of the eye is usually circular and has a diameter varying from 5 to 125 miles.

The boundary formed between the storm and its eye is called the eye wall. The eye wall comprise of the heaviest rain, tallest clouds and the strongest winds of the storm. A tropical storm passing through land causes major damage and destruction on the land when the eye wall passes over it. The eye wall when completely wraps itself around the eye of the storm in a circle, creates the most well formed and strongest hurricanes. A partial eye wall is common among storms of weaker degree.

'Eye wall replacement cycle' is a behavioral pattern that's exhibited by hurricanes of higher level. The storms of this kind are more intense by nature. They have smaller eye wall radius and eye than other tropical storms. Occasionally the rain band in the outer section creates thunderstorms forming an outer concentric ring. The momentum and moisture that sustained the existing eye thus get cut off and considerably weaken the storm. But the storm intensifies and sometimes in a higher magnitude when a new eye forms in place of the old existing eye. <bio>Focusing recent findings in Murcia, Peter Wilson is writing at large for http://www.alicante-spain.com .
Extreme weather always seemed to be something that happened in far flung exotic places. Places with balmy climates or extreme temperatures. Britain it seems is just drizzly, mild, and dull. But there has been some scary weather in the British Isles and some experts are predicting it can only get worse as global warming and climate change take hold.

Boscastle

The <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/flash+floods" rel="tag">flash floods in the Cornish town of Boscastle were one of the most extreme to be recorded in Britain, according to the Environment Agency.

Homes damaged

The damage caused by the flood was estimated at millions of pounds. The flood was caused by two rivers bursting their banks -- a torrent of water swept through the main street. As well as homes and shops being destroyed, over 50 cars were written off.

Increased threat

Flooding is a regular problem in the UK in recent years and some are blaming the increase on global warming.

Flash floods

• Flash floods are increasingly seen in urban areas where surfaces are unable to absorb large amounts of water.

• The velocity of the water is often more damaging than the water levels.

It was over 50 years ago that one of the worst floods happened in the UK, in the fishing village of Lynmouth, Devon. In 1952, 35 people died and hundreds lost their homes to the flood after heavy rain led to a 12 foot wave surging through the village after the banks of the Lyn River broke.

Storms

It's often assumed that Britain escapes the more violent weather phenomena like tornadoes and hurricanes. But in fact, there is a long history of scary weather in the UK. In 1703, Britain's worst ever storm, known as the Great Storm, destroyed many towns. Robinson Crusoe author, Daniel Defoe, counted 17,000 trees down in Kent alone. The wind was 73mph - hurricane force. On land, 123 people died but it was thought some 8,000 were killed at sea.

Forward-wind to the future, in 1990 the Burns Day Storm left 47 people dead, between 3 and 5 million trees were thought to have been destroyed. Also in that year, hundreds of people lost their homes to floodwaters as high tides breached the sea wall at Towyn, North Wales.

In 2000, storms lashed southern Britain leaving carnage and chaos as they flooded homes, towns and roads. Gusts approached 100mph and tens of thousands of homes were left without power.

The Environment Agency advised householders had to take more responsibility as climate change threatened to make such storms more likely. <bio>T and R Direct specialise in house insurance.
Do you ever feel like your head is going to split open or that it is a balloon ready to pop? Does your head ever hurt before a storm? Does it get better once the rain comes? Have you ever noticed that when the atmospheric pressure changes that you can feel it? Our state was like many states due to the water shortage. We just did not have rain for weeks and weeks. I did not have headaches during that time either. We really needed rain because our reservoirs were very low and the situation was getting desperate. Places that were supposed to hot and dry throughout our country were having floods, but not our place.

Then all of a sudden, I started having headaches again. The weather was changing and the nights were getting cool. I started feeling like my head was going to pop when all of a sudden we got rain. About 5 inches feel over a 3 day period and my head hurt the full time. It was like my skull was a barometer and when the pressure started changing to indicate a storm was coming, I could tell. I would know before the weather man would tell us that we were going to get rain.

My father used to say that when he was a boy he could tell when it was going to rain because all the cows in the fields would start mooing and just lie down in the pastures. It was always a funny image in my mind that they would be affected by a storm that was approaching and just lie down and moo. During this last big rain storm, I did not think it was so funny when that was all I wanted to do, too.

It is pretty amazing that many people carry their own personal barometer in their skulls. During this last rainstorm, I found out that many people were also having serious headaches. My doctor said that many headaches are caused by weather changes, which can also cause migraines. But THAT is for another day!

Even with the 5 inches of rain we got over the last few weeks, the water tables are still low, so I guess we can all expect to have more headaches. It also means that the cows will be lying around in the pastures and mooing. Now that I have recognized some of the symptoms of a rainy headache, I find it interesting to look at other animal's behavior when the storms come. I have dogs and cats become restless and move around, like they are trying to get comfortable. While I was lying around pampering my head, my kitty was also sleeping more than usual.

I have noticed that birds are not bothered at all by the rain or storms. They continue to fly around in the rain. That is pretty curious, too, as you would think it would be hard to fly when their feathers get wet, but it doesn't seem to bother them.

I have even seen hummingbirds pick up the number of times they go to a feeder, both before a storm and during it. It is interesting to realize that when the barometer changes so many humans are affected by the storm that is approaching. Do you think it would affect everyone the same when the rain turns to ice or snow? I know it does for me, but it sure feels much better once the rain stops. <bio>Social network users, go to http://www.wishafriend.com/ac/ for myspace comments and http://www.wishafriend.com/graphics/ for myspace graphics.
Shutters As Protection

In many ways and in many places shutters on homes have become more of a novelty than having an actual purpose. Many people attach the artificial versions of these once useful items to their home in an effort to create an illusion and to use them to add more curb appeal to their home in an effort to pad resale value. However with all of the large storms that have been experienced worldwide lately the actual shutter is making what some might call a come back. The most popular kind is what is known as a hurricane shutter. With this style of exterior shutter people are experiencing a larger feeling of confidence in their security and safety from approaching storms. These are a very useful item in storm protection as they will work to keep debris from breaking your windows and from entering your home as well as work to keep the elements of the storm on the outside as well.

These items are also considered to be a home improvement since they will be adding so much to your home. You can purchase them to match with the current color scheme of your home as well as be able to use them to provide protection. There also shutters that you could put up on the inside of your home as well, however these will not protect your glass or offer you nearly the level of protection that you want. The reason for this huge increase in exterior shutter popularity is because of all of the inclement weather that has been experienced worldwide recently. However, many people still do not think that the storms will ever come to them. They need to look at history and decide if they are willing to take that risk to determine if their home will be safe or not. Also, one should consider what the next person that will be buying the home will think in regards to safety and visual appeal of these shutters.

Look into the many options that are available as well when considering the purchase of storm shutters. There are many makes, models, brand names ands colors available. Look into this before making your decision and be confident in how your house will look after you have this done. Weigh your options not only to your home, but to your wallet as well. You should also be thinking about the future as opposed to the now when you look into this purchase. <bio>Concentrating on the area of storm protection, Greg Hansward writes especially for http://www.shades-blinds-shutters-guide.com .
Due to the drastic weather changes that are occurring on a more regular basis, people need to educate their children about the various weather and other disaster alerts as well as teaching them the course of action that they should take in case of such emergencies.

Inclement weather is often announced on the television or radio. Yet if you were to ask many adults what the different alerts mean, many would find themselves struggling to find the answers. The following is a brief description of tornadoes, the warning systems, and the steps that you need to take to ensure your family's safety.

For many people in the United States, tornadoes are a common occurrence. Although they usually appear between the months of March and August, they can occur at any time. These violent storms can have winds up to 300 miles per hour and when they reach the ground, can damage an area of one mile wide and fifty miles long. These monsters of nature will devastate anything in their path so a safety plan has been developed to ensure that human lives are spared.

Tornadoes usually develop during periods of severe thunderstorms. If the conditions are favorable for a tornado to form, the National Weather Service that is responsible for your area will issue a tornado watch. This simply means that there is a possibility of a tornado and you should stay inside and tune into your local weather station.

Since many of these violent storms develop as a result of warm and cold air patterns colliding, you may notice a drastic change in the air temperature. It may become very warm or very cold. Hail is often reported before the appearance of a tornado as well. The air may become very still and quiet. If any of these phenomenons occur, you may want to keep an eye on the sky as well as listen to your local channel as the weather stations and warning alarms are not one hundred percent accurate. You want to look for any strange cloud formations or movements. If you notice anything unusual, you will want to seek shelter.

If a tornado has been spotted, your local channel will announce a tornado warning. This means that you should go to your basement or to a reinforced room in the middle of the house or one with very few windows (usually a bathroom is a good place due to the plumbing that is supporting the walls). Many areas also have a tornado alarm system that will sound off in the event of a tornado warning. Again, these warnings and alarm systems are not completely accurate. If you think that you have seen a tornado, seek cover even if the alarms have not gone off.

If you are in a vehicle and you spot a tornado, take shelter in a nearby building. If you cannot find a building, you should lie in a ditch or ravine face down, covering your head with your hands.

You should take the time to explain to your children exactly what a tornado is and the actions needed to be taken to remain safe in case you are not with them when disaster strikes.<bio>Find helpful and creative ideas for parents and grandparents while you shop our affordable kids furniture.
One of the most important factors to take into account when going to vacation to someplace is the weather. Punta Cana weather is one of the most attractive features of this vacation spot. The temperature and maritime conditions on Punta Cana are perfect to practice water sports and to enjoy comfortable time there. Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic offers tropical weather during the whole year. Like in most tropical areas the weather seasons are divided between summer and winter. The term winter here is a bit loose since there are no extreme cold conditions like in some other places around the world.

The weather in Punta Cana during the seasons doesn't vary drastically. The summer time ranges from May to October, and it gets a temperature of approximately 31=B0C and 22=B0C during day and night respectively. During summer the humidity can be quite high, raising the feeling of the temperature to a couple of more degrees. The mountains in Dominican Republic are a way cooler environment than the coast where the max temperature can go up to 16=B0C and to 40=B0C in the deserted areas in the southwest. The rain in Punta Cana take place mostly in the summer time but even then the showers are quite short and last a couple of minutes which is another advantage for spending a vacation there. Some thunderstorms can happen during this time of the year producing large amounts of rain, but these are very seldom and produced by severe weather systems.

The Punta Cana weather provides a winter where the temperature range is from 29=B0C to 20=B0C. The humidity during this time of the year that goes from November to April is very low. That means very low chance of rain and very mild temperatures. The reigning blue skies and shining sun make this one the favorite times of the year for vacationing in Punta Cana. Since Punta Cana is located in the eastern coast the weather, there is mostly hot even in the colder months but the typical difference of two or three degrees from summer is quite worth it.

The hurricanes that can develop in the Caribbean are a major point of consideration when thinking of vacationing here. These powerful storms appear during the hurricane season that goes from June to November but typically the months of greater risk for the area of Punta Cana are August, September and October. The hurricanes that affect the area usually have a hit rate lower than one per year, so as long you keep an eye on the weather reports you can vacation there even during the summer. Weather in Punta Cana can be tricky but one of the best tips for going there is to use winter time to avoid any hurricane risk and to have a very comfortable temperature. <bio>Article Source : http://www.puntacana-travelguide.com </bio>

When you really stop to think about it, people can decorate their homes with some of the strangest creations known to Man. Remember when those fancy globes were all the rage and everyone had to have at least one adorning their yard? People will place fake deer, roosters, and just about any barnyard critter out on their lawn for the world to see. One particular phase that has seen a resurgence of popularity in recent years is the appearance of a quality-made weathervane mounted to the rooftops of homes all throughout the land.

Now at one time, when the nation was still primarily rural and most people made their living from farming or some form of agriculture, weathervanes were more popular than garden gnomes are today. However, unlike those spooky gnomes that inhabit yards across this country, there was a very pragmatic and necessary reason to mount a weather vane to the top of your home.

The weather is the life force of agriculture and it was positively vital for farmers to know if storms were approaching. It was very common for brass or copper finials to have barometers and other useful instruments for predicting weather attached to them. Of course the primary purpose of weathervanes is to indicate the direction of wind--another useful piece of information for a farmer to possess as it would help predict the approach of coming storms.

Of course in this modern age of 24-hour weather channels, the Internet, and a number of various tools for predicting weather, the practical necessity for the weather vane vanished and so too did its popularity. However, there indeed has occurred a very real rise in the popularity of wind vanes but they are used solely for aesthetic purposes on homes nowadays.

In many ways, the premium weathervane is a real piece of Americana and a part of the fabric which is our nation. While the original antique weathervanes were hand-crafted and have become collector's items, the newer versions are made in a wider range of shapes and sizes. These new shapes and designs have indeed helped with the resurging popularity of weathervanes, but many people still like to buy the more traditional vanes made in the shape of farm animals like the rooster--a classic style.

But whether you are shopping for a quality antique weathervane to place atop your traditional home or perhaps a custom windvane to give your home an added touch of style, online shopping offers the best opportunity to find the greatest selection and lowest prices. <bio>Jesse Akre, owner of numerous online shopping and niche home and garden decor sites makes it easy to find fabulous http://www.weathervanes-store.com/weathervanes-birds.html for your special place, or the perfect copper or wood Weathervane for your home.
Hurricane Shutters are something very serious these days, if you read the news recently you probably know that the world climate is changing, as a result we are expecting more tropical storms in our region in the next few years, and the forecast for the hurricane shutters is that its going to be a much needed tool to protect your home.

A hurricane shutter is most common in the Southern states that often see bad weather a couple of months during the year. If you do not have these, you will risk a lot of damage to your house. Today more and more people are looking into buying hurricane shutters as a result of the last year storms and because some insurance companies has started recommending the use of hurricane shutters.

Hurricane or "storm panel" shutters are often constructed out of a solid steel or aluminum frame and provide protection superior to that of Bahamas, Colonial, wooden, or vinyl shutters. This shutter is also considerably less expensive than decorative shutters. You should think about the exterior of your house because those shutters are considerably less attractive--and you may want to put them in storage at the end of the hurricane season.

The reason that these shutters look less attractive should not deter you from considering them for protection of your home, although these hurricane shutters do not look so nice they can protect your windows, balcony, or storefront from bad weather. During a storm, these areas may be pounded with heavy rain, hail, and wind. If you have a hurricane shutter in place, you do not have to worry about a lot of damage. The great thing about the hurricane shutters is that they also give you some peace of mind while a storm is raging outside. The hurricane shutters can also help to protect the people inside of your house, and help to protect a little more then material positions. A hurricane shutter will go a long way in ensuring that your windows do not get busted out by bad weather.

Most hurricane shutters are designed for the use and maintenance of one person up and down operation. One person can operate the hurricane shutters and do it relatively fast so that the chances that you will not be prepared when a storm is on its way it relatively low. A great advantage if a storm sneaks up on you by surprise. This way, all you have to do is pull this shutter down and lock it into position; a simple five second job. While everyone else is boarding up their windows in the rain, you will be inside your house, protected from the elements.

The advice of most hurricane shutters companies is to set them up when the hurricane season starts and to take them off for the rest of the year, thus avoiding their looks and enjoying the protection the shutters offer. This is not a joke, and a lot of people use this advice, it makes sense that you want to keep your property protected when its hurricane season and once the danger is off to return to your "normal" look. <bio>Daniel Roshard is a interior designer fascinated by garden and outdoor architecture, he studies integration of house appliances to the outdoors and gardens.
Are you interested in the weather? If so, why rely on what other people have to say? Instead, you should look into buying some of the many weather tools that are available on the market today. Even if you are an amateur, there is much that you can gain knowledge of if you have the right tools, and also take the time to learn more about weather.

Here are a few of the basic instruments that you should look into buying if you are interested in learning more about the weather.

1. Weather Radio: One of the most common instruments is a weather radio. As you can imagine, with a weather radio you will be able to learn quite a bit. Not only do they speak the language that you are interested in, but you will also be able to see how often the so called professionals are correct. After all, it is the dream of every weatherman to be able to accurately predict the weather day in and day out.

A weather radio monitors everything from forecasts to weather bulletins and warnings. All in all, amateurs and professionals can learn a lot through the use of a weather radio. And of course, members of the general public can also find these to be quite helpful.

2. Windspeed Indicator: One of the most fun weather instruments to have is a windspeed indicator. Believe it or not, these can be exciting to use, and at the same time they are useful in a number of different ways. There are many people who regularly rely on windspeed indicators. They include climbers, kite flyers, surfers, sailors, engineers, and many others. No matter who you are, there is a chance that you will get great fun out of using a windspeed indicator. As mentioned before, a lot of people also use these for work or while having fun with their favorite hobby.

3. Digital and Analog Hygrometers: You will come across both digital and analog hygrometers as you become more interested in the weather. You can use one of these in order to measure humidity in enclosed spaces such as your home or office. These are also a great way to determine if your air conditioner and/or humidifier are working properly.

These are three weather instruments that both amateurs and professionals can use on a regular basis. If you are interested in learning more about the weather, look into starting out with these tools. Weather radios, windspeed indicators, and hygrometers may seem basic on the surface, but they surely have quite a bit of fun to offer, while also allowing you to learn at the same time. <bio>Kent Wood is a weather guru.
After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, many children have become aware of natural disasters and are beginning to ask questions about them. As a parent, you should become educated about disasters and the safety procedures that need to be followed to ensure that everyone remains unharmed. The following is an explanation of hurricanes and the steps that your family will need to take if they ever find themselves in a hurricane disaster situation.

Hurricanes are severe tropical storms that form in the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the Pacific Ocean. These storms rotate in a counter clockwise rotation and gain strength as they move into warmer waters due to the evaporation of sea water in these areas. They can reach winds of 74 miles per hour and can devastate coastal areas if they reach landfall.

Many of these tropical storms do not reach land, however. They "stall" or remain stationary in one place over the ocean for too long, cooling the water temperature. Without warmer water to fuel them, these storms dissipate with no harm done.

In the Northern Hemisphere, these storms are most common from the months of June to September while in the Southern Hemisphere they are likely to occur between October and May.

Unlike tornadoes, warnings involved in this type of storm activity are usually given days in advance. Meteorologists will begin tracking these tropical storms and their wind gusts while they are still out to sea. By calculating their speed and the direction of prevalent winds, these experts can accurately predict when and where these hurricanes will reach landfall although they may not know how strong the hurricane may be by the time it reaches the coast.

States that are affected by these storms on a regular basis have disaster plans already in place. If it appears that a severe tropical storm with the potential of becoming a hurricane is headed your way, state officials will usually issue evacuation orders. During regular sized hurricanes, you will just need to move inland away from the coastal regions. In the case of major activity, such as Hurricane Katrina, the evacuation may be statewide.

There are several things that you may want to do before the evacuation process begins. You will want to bring any outside furniture and other items inside so they do not blow away during the approaching storm. You will also want to protect your windows by boarding them up. You may also want to shut off any of your utilities lines to eliminate the danger of accidental fire during the storm, especially if you are not going to remain at home. You should also make sure that you have plenty of gas in your vehicle in case the evacuation order does come as the highways will be busy and the gas stations may be full.

To prepare for the evacuation process itself, you should make arrangements to meet your family at a predestined location if anyone should become separated.
