Even if you are not aware of it, you have probably seen at least one of the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries. The Lady and Unicorn tapestry series has been a topic of discussion for years because no one can agree on the meaning of the scenes. Most people will agree that the tapestries represent the five senses and a culmination of the senses in the sixth tapestry. The tapestries are generally referred to by a particular sense with the sixth being To My Soul Desire or A Mon Seul Desir. You can view all of these tapestries at: http://www.european-wall-tapestries.com. The big question is why is the Lady with the Unicorn to begin with?

Some people think that the Lady is trying to tame the unicorn, because as legend has it, only a virgin can tame a unicorn. Others think that the Lady is renouncing all the physical senses to become part of the spiritual realm of the unicorn. Upon close inspection of the unicorn tapestries, you can see the interesting details that support both sides of this disagreement.

In The Touch Unicorn Tapestry, we see the Lady standing with her left hand on the unicorn's horn and her right hand holding her coat of arms flag. This stance appears somewhat aggressive, as though the Lady was prepared for battle. The three point stance also creates a sort of trinity, but not necessarily in a religious context. Her family's coat of arms, herself, and the mystical wild unicorn create the entire tangible reality to the young woman. If we were to look at this from the spiritual perspective, perhaps the young woman is giving up the support of her family for a life of spirituality. The Touch could also illustrate the power of purity over the wild carnality of the sensation of touch. The unruly unicorn has been tamed by the touch of the Lady.

The Sound or The Hearing Unicorn Wallhanging depicts the Lady playing an organ. This piece is also called Dame a L'orgue. Again, she is standing in a commanding position in front of the organ. The unicorn is calmed by the music and is lying down in the back of the scene. You can also see that the unicorn is holding up the Lady's coat of arms in this scene, which could symbolize some sort of acceptance between the Lady and the Unicorn--a transition, if you will, to the spiritual world from the physical world.

The Smell Lady and the Unicorn Tapestry depicts the young woman braiding a trail of carnations. Carnations were generally used to represent betrothal and loyalty. The unicorn is tamed by the scent of the flowers and by the purity of the Lady as she weaves them. Once again, the Lady is standing in a commanding position over the unicorn. This could illustrate the Lady's unfinished journey toward spirituality--she is still on a different level than the mystical unicorn.

In The Taste Unicorn tapestry, the Lady is depicted reaching her hand into a bowl of fruit, possibly grapes. She is still attached the physical world, and still reaches for sustanence that she feels she needs. She is still in a standing position, but the unicorn is now rearing back on its hind legs. The unicorn is closer to her level, but she has yet to submit to the spiritual.

The Sight tapestry is perhaps the turning point in the Lady and the Unicorn Tapestry series. In this scene, the Lady is seated with the unicorn resting on her lap. The Lady looks sad and distant, while the unicorn appears to be smiling. The Lady holds a mirror that reflects the unicorn's face--as though she could not look directly at the unicorn, but needed to see the reflection to fully transcend into the spiritual. You can also see that the Lady's coat of arms is no longer held by either her or the unicorn. The Sight unicorn tapestry shows the Lady's full realization of giving up the physical for the spiritual. It could also simply represent the complete taming of the unicorn.

The final piece in the series is A Mon Seul Desir, or To My Soul Desire, which could depict either the Lady's successful transition into the spiritual world or her failure of trying to transcend to the spiritual. In this scene, the lady is either giving or taking the chest of jewels. You cannot tell which from her facial expression or body position which she is doing. The tent behind the Lady appears to represent the culmination of desire (hence the text on the tent). Since the Lady is outside of the tent, it could mean that she has not fully gone into the spiritual world. She is just outside, either trying to get in by giving away her jewels, or is banished to remain just outside because she could not resist the jewels.

If you would like to see the entire Lady and the Unicorn Set, please visit The Tapestry Standard and look in our Lady and the Unicorn tapestry section. <bio>Opal Victoria is budding Arts and Entertainment journalist who lives and works in Tennessee.
Full of mystique and beauty, the Lady and the Unicorn series are among the best examples of medieval tapestry in existence. Many interpretations have been put forward through the ages, but there is no definite explanation as to the mystery behind the Lady and the Unicorn.

Dramatic Medieval Art

Each tapestry in this striking series shows a unicorn interacting with a woman in some way with the unicorn representing the six human senses in some way. These are sight, smell, touch, sound, taste and love.

Throughout history unicorns have been a mysterious force and have been considered a representation of Christ. Many people believe in unicorns, although their existence has never been proven. Unicorns are said to possess magical powers, and the Chinese believed the rare sighting of this creature signalled good fortune ahead. The horn is considered particularly magical with an ability to recognise and neutralise poisons with an antidote. During the medieval era the unicorn was linked to Christianity. According to legend it could only be tamed by the scent of a virgin.

The Lady: elegance and tranquillity

Unicorns were only attracted to purity and being connected with Christ and his spiritual integrity meant that only a woman with virginal attributes could be linked with the creature. The tapestries have been interpreted in several different ways. One belief is that they are a representation of the Virgin Mary with Christ. Another suggests the representation of a woman embracing the spiritual world by renouncing the physical one. These tapestries in their own classical and elegant way have widespread appeal, perhaps because of their pure and spiritual nature. People need to feel that which is good and these tapestries give the impression that good will prevail over evil.

The origins of the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries

Originally the tapestries were made for a French nobleman, Jean Le Viste during the 15th century. The family coat of arms is visible in the tapestry serves. What is less clear is who designed the work, which family member they were intended for and how they came into existence.

Based on the style of the clothing in the tapestries it is thought the tapestries come from the late fifteenth century, and possibly designed for Jean le Viste himself in celebration of his promotion to the French Court in 1489.

When Le Viste died the tapestries were probably passed on through family connections, although the exact whereabouts was unknown for 200 years. In 1841 they were discovered by a member of the French government who recommended the purchase of this magnificent work of art. Following restorative work and a purchase for the nation the government donated them to the Cluny Museum where they can be seen today.

The mystique of the tapestry

The origins of the tapestry remain a mystery to this day, with interpretation based on clues within the art itself. Perhaps the mystique of the work combined with elegance and purity affirms the appeal of these timeless pieces.

Copyright © The Tapestry House, all rights reserved.<bio>Angela Dawson_field writes on a number of subjects for the Tapestry House including unicorn tapestries. http://www.thetapestryhouse.com/products/detail/s67-s.html http://www.thetapestryhouse.com/products/list/medieval-unicorn.html</bio>

The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries are among the most beautiful and captivating masterpieces of Medieval times. And almost as captivating as the tapestries themselves is their wonderfully chequered history.

These works of art were undiscovered until 1844 when they were found by French dramatist and historian Proper Merimee in Boussac Castle. The novelist Georges Sands brought them to public attention in her novels . Badly damaged by damp, they were bought by the Cluny Museum in Paris in 1853 and restored. They are now displayed in their own circular room at the museum.

The designer and weavers of the Lady and the Unicorn series are unknown but experts estimate they were woven in the late 15th century. It is thought that the series were commissioned by the Le Viste family, of which the head was Jean Le Viste, a nobleman in the court of King Charles VII, as the coat of arms on the standards, including the lion and the unicorn, represented the family.

The decorative floral background of each tapestry is the same. The Mille Fleurs pattern, meaning the "thousand flowers" is a style most associated with the Bruges and Brussels areas of Flanders in Belgium so it is widely thought that the tapestries were made there.

The beautifully woven tapestries use the L'halluin weaving techniques with bold colors and intricate detailing. Each tapestry features the same subjects, a beautiful lady and a mythical creature, a unicorn. A lion also appears in each scene. However the theme for each is slightly different. The inclusion of other animals a rabbit, birds, a monkey adds to the world of fantasy and complement the enigmatic images.

The six tapestries are said to represent the five senses taste, hearing, sight, smell and touch with the sixth often interpreted as "love".

In the sight tapestry a woman is seen holding a mirror, the ubiquitous unicorn reflected in its glass. The tapestry representing hearing sees the woman playing a musical instrument, the lion and the unicorn standing at either side framing the scene. In the third tapestry the lady is seen taking a piece of candy as a celebration of taste. The lion and the unicorn once again feature, lying on their back. Representing touch, in the fourth tapestry the lady holds the unicorn's horn as the lion looks on. In the fifth tapestry we see the lady making a wreath of fresh flowers. The lion and unicorn once again frame the scene whilst a monkey smells one of the flowers demonstrating the theme.

Adorned by the words "A Mon Seul Desir" meaning "to my soul desire", the sixth tapestry in the series is larger than the rest and differs in theme. The tapestry depicts a lady holding a necklace whilst her maidservant holds an open chest. A tent in the image is said to represent the lady's soul desire, which she is about to enter.

Some interpretations see the tapestries as representing virginity, based on an ancient myth that only a pure virgin could tame the unicorn. Others interpretation sees the lady putting the necklace into the chest as a denial of the passions aroused in the other tapestries. Yet another version sees this tapestry as representing a sixth sense of understanding or empathy. The latter explanation is taken from the sermons of Jean Gerson, a lecturer at the University of Paris around 1420.

The mystery surrounding the story of the tapestry has inspired works of literature. Best selling author of Tracy Chevalier, inspired by the layers of symbolic meanings in the series, decided the tapestries would make an ideal subject for a novel. Centering on a young artist man torn between Love and Duty, the story has all the passion and uncertainty of the images themselves. Her colorful and enchanting interpretation of how the tapestries came to be created did justice to the rich, vibrant tapestries.

The original Lady and the Unicorn tapestries are currently displayed in Paris's Musee National du Moyen-Age Thermes de Cluny but reproductions are still being bought today to compliment home décor. The tapestries, rich in both beauty and history, make unique and creative wall hangings adding a touch of character to every home.

Copyright © The Tapestry House, all rights reserved. <bio>Christine Toner writes on a number of subjects for the Tapestry House including unicorn art. http://www.thetapestryhouse.com/products/list/medieval-unicorn.html http://www.thetapestryhouse.com/ </bio>

Of all medieval tapestry collections, perhaps none is more mysterious and thought-provoking than the Lady and the Unicorn series. Very little is known about the origins of the original tapestry set, which is currently on display at Cluny Museum in Paris, France. Throughout the ages, many different interpretations have been extracted from these complex tapestries. Yet no one can seem to agree on the precise breadth and depth of their meaning.

Striking Medieval Art

Each one of these artistic wonders offers a striking portrayal of a unicorn interacting with a woman. In medieval times, a unicorn was often seen as a representation of Christ, with the horn being a symbol of the unity between Christ and God. In each of the six tapestries in the Lady and the Unicorn series, unicorns are used to aide in the representation of human senses. These are defined as sight, smell, touch, sound, taste and love.

Unicorns have been a mysterious and fascinating force throughout history. While the actual existence of these creatures has never been conclusively proven in modern times, many people still believe in these mythical creatures.

In fact, the faithful have looked to other mammals, such as the giraffe and the ostrich, as proof that unicorns could have existed at one point in time. In essence, true believers are not at all hesitant to embrace the unicorn as something of divine significance that existed at some point in time. Some even believe unicorns may still exist in remote regions of the world.

The Myth of the Unicorn

The unicorn was said to have possessed magical powers. The horn, in particular, was widely regarded in ancient cultures as having the ability to recognize and extinguish poisons. The horn was often depicted as a perfect spiral. If a piece of the horn was placed in poisoned water, the water would bubble up. And if bits of the horn were sprinkled on food that was believed to be poisoned, the horn would act as an antidote to the poison.

The ancient Chinese believed that unicorns were a good omen that only made their presence known to humans in rare cases. It was thought that these appearances were a positive sign of the times, of good things to come.

In medieval times, the unicorn became a symbol of Christianity. The popular belief was that a unicorn could never be lured or tamed, except by the scent of a pure virgin.

The Lady: Putting the Pieces Together

The purity and spiritual invincibility of Christ meant that only the purity of a sweet virgin could attract a creature representing these attributes. The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries have frequently been interpreted as symbolic of a woman renouncing everything in the physical world (i.e. physical human senses) for the greater significance of the spiritual world. Some believe the tapestries allude to a woman's seduction of the unicorn. Some even believe these tapestries depict the Virgin Mary with Christ.

Perhaps this purity of spirit and the tranquility that the tapestries represent explains the widespread appeal of these classic art works. People have a strong desire to believe in that which is good and righteous in our world. We have a deep need to be reassured that there is a greater purpose to our existence: the notion that ultimately good and peace will prevail. When we embrace the visual aspects of these tapestries, perhaps we are embracing the symbolic concepts within each of our hearts.

Where Did the Lady and the Unicorn Tapestries Come From?

Symbolism aside, what also remains a bit of a mystery is exactly how these tapestries came into existence. What we do know is that the set was made for the family of Jean Le Viste, a wealthy aristocrat who was a member of the French nobility during the 15th century. The family's coat of arms can be seen throughout the tapestry series, although it is unclear for which family member the tapestries were made.

Based on the style of the clothing worn by the ladies in the tapestries and a number of other artistic indicators, many experts believe the tapestries were designed around the end of the 15th century. They may have possibly been designed for Jean Le Viste himself in recognition of his promotion to the French Court in 1489. However, we do not know specifically who designed the tapestries.

The tapestries were likely passed on through the family after Jean Le Viste's death, although their exact whereabouts were unknown for nearly 200 years. They reappeared in 1841 when they were discovered by a French government inspector of historical monuments. Noting the relatively poor condition of the tapestries at that time, the inspector recommended that the government purchase the works and attempt to restore them. Eventually, the French government purchased them in 1882 and donated them to the Cluny Museum.

The Mystery Continues...

Very few historical records exist that explain the origins of the Lady and the Unicorn tapestry series. At best, scholars have been only able to offer speculation based on the limited information and clues within the tapestries themselves. Perhaps it is this mystique that ultimately adds to the appeal of the pieces. Regardless, the original tapestries are open to viewings by the public in a specially-designed oval chamber within the Cluny Museum. They have undergone restorative processes several times since the 19th century and can now be seen as their original artists intended.

Copyright © The Tapestry House, all rights reserved. <bio>David Burr writes on a number of subjects for the Tapestry House including unicorn tapestries. http://www.thetapestryhouse.com/products/list/medieval-unicorn.html </bio>

Tapestries of early times were often patterned on current events or heroes of the day. Wall tapestries with knights and castles often adorned the very castles they displayed. Tapestries were important in castles to reduce the draft and cold in the large stone buildings. They were hung on the inside of exterior walls in the rooms where people congregated. Tapestries with knights and castles were often created to preserve the history of the occupants of the castle and the weavings often remained in the castle for many centuries and generations. With each new generation adding their piece of work to the visual history on the walls.

Tapestries from the middle ages can sometimes be very helpful in providing social information of the time period. They depict the armor that was worn and the accessories such as banners and horse decoration used during battle. They also showed the original construction of buildings that may no longer exist but still hold historical relevance. Such things as food and drink and household customs were depicted with pride and preserved as an indication of the family's position. They were often very busy tapestries in that they may depict many people and horses and activities all one the same piece of work.

Medieval tapestries also depict art forms of, hunting scenes, gallantry of nobles and knights, the unicorn, and dining and feasting of the nobles. Unicorn tapestries are one of the marvels of the world. Unicorn tapestries reflect Incarnation, the Passion, the Resurrection, and the five senses.

By the early Renaissance period or fifteenth century, artists were anxious to leave the Black Middle Ages behind and express their feelings of individual freedom in the bright colors of huge paintings and tapestries with heraldic, pastoral, romantic or exotic themes.

Online tapestry retailers have become a very good source for purchasing tapestries with medieval themes and tapestries of all subjects. Designer Wall Tapestries offers very detailed pictures of each tapestry and provide you with the dimensions and features such as rod pockets and types of fabric used. <bio>Susan Russell - Owner and Interior Designer for http://www.designerwalltapestries.com/ Feel free to browse there Medieval Tapestries section- http://www.designerwalltapestries.com/Medieval_Tapestries_s/68.htm </bio>

The French say, "La Dame a la Licorne", which I think may be best interpreted in English as "The Lady and the Unicorn", also known as the Tapestry Cycle. It is one of the greatest works of art of the Middle Ages in Europe. The original Tapestry Cycle resides in the Musee de Cluny, in Paris, France since 1882.

There are six (6) tapestries that make up the series in The Tapestry Cycle, which was woven long ago in the late fifteenth century in Flanders and made of silk and wool. Six different tapestries depict the six senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing, and "to my only desire" or as the French say, "=C0 mon seu d=E9sir". We interpret this to be "love" in all languages.

Not so easily grasped is the meaning of the sixth tapestry. To my only desire or as they say in French, =C0 Mon Seul D=E9sir - We shall call this our sense of Love. A very good sense indeed. This is the wider of all the other tapestries and the style is slightly different than the rest. Some feel the lady is putting her pearls into a chest as a renunciation of passions that were aroused by the other senses... an assertion of free will, yes? No? Maybe? Or perhaps this sixth sense is "understanding", (Jean Gerson, 1420). And last but not least there is the interpretation of love or virginity. You decide.

One common "thread" within each of these tapestries is a noble lady with the unicorn to her left the lion and to her right. However, some of the series will have a monkey instead of the lion. A pennant and armor are held up by the unicorn and lion which marks the powerful nobleman in the King Charles court, Jean Le Viste, who sponsored the work of art. The style of this work is of mille-fleurs, meaning a thousand flowers. A harmony of colors were used in a limited number of shades to provide poetic enchangment.

Having a reproduction of any of these six (6) series of tapestries is very popular and they are sought after. It can be thought of as that intellectual and educational wall hanging that will enhance your home decor. Regardless, these conversation pieces stir the imagination and bring on the many talks about the different interpretation of each of these six (6) senses in these wall hangings, as well as why these tapestries were sponsored and for what reason or reasons.

A fun tale and a fun time in the telling of these stories. Every tapestry tells a story... do you know the stories? Do you know the tales? It makes for a fun day at the museum, when you can take along Mr. Art History... a friend of mine. If you don't have one... a Mr. Art History that is, you always have some fun in my writings and those of others in telling you a bit of what we enjoy and our thoughts on these fine works of art. <bio>Maridee Hanselman enjoys researching work of art historical background in the creation of these works, as it bring more meaning and interest to the art today.
Lil Kinz are the smaller, little siblings of the larger Webkinz. Lil Kinz are a cuddly collection of very special plush pets that allow you access to the Webkinz World game and care site. On the Webkinz website, Lil Kinz are also shown as pint-sized, just like in real life. Lil Kinz are highly collectible and totally loveable and also make great gifts. Lil Kinz retail at around $8, and regular Webkinz retail for around $13.

Earning KinzCash to Care for Your Lil Kinz

KinzCash can be spent at several virtual Webkinz shops to buy food, support items, and luxury items for the Lil Kinz virtual pets. Kinzcash is earned by completing virtual jobs, answering trivia questions, and playing arcade games. KinzCash allows you to go shopping in the W Shop for your pet, where you can buy food, clothes, toys, furniture, design rooms, and clothes, and take the virtual Lil Kinz pet to the doctor.

Lil Kinz in Webkinz World

Adopting a Lil Kinz will grant you access to the Webkinz World website with the secret code that comes with the doll. Lil Kinz comes with the exact same pet special items in Webkinz World as their full size Webkinz partners. Lil Kinz and Webkinz are a perfect way to teach pet responsibility and the concept of working in order to care for a dependent to your child in a fun and exciting way. Lil Kinz have quickly caught up in popularity to their bigger siblings and are becoming more and more popular due to their lower price. Fewer of them are made, adding value, and they are cuter due to their smaller size. Lil Kinz can be used in play as little brothers and sisters for Webkinz pets, so if your plush virtual pet is lonely, you can adopt a Lil Kinz and they can have a virtual younger sibling. Because it is smaller and its legs are smaller, your virtual Lil' Kinz will appear to move more quickly across your screen inside of Webkinz World. You need to feed, bathe, and put to sleep your Lil Kinz just the same as your full-sized Webkinz. The Lil Kinz and the Webkinz pet special foods are the same also; for example, the Unicorn and the Lil Kinz Unicorn both like to eat the Sparkling Flower Fondue. Some people exclusively collect full-sized Webkinz, and others prefer the Lil Kinz. From the standpoint of price and convenience, many feel that the Lil' Kinz are the way to go.

Concerns About Lil Kinz

Some parents are concerned about the ability of kids to chat online in Webkinz World. However, KinzChat doesn't allow children to type answers; rather, they have 900 preset phrases that can be chosen to chat with others, which makes it impossible for children to give any information to a potentially dangerous internet user.

Lil Kinz are little members of the Webkinz family that you can buy for a lower price and still get the same amount of fun. <bio>Visit http://webkinz-for-sale.com/Webkinz-main/LilKinz to find a wide selection of new and used LilKinz at low prices </bio>

For lovers of home décor, tapestries are an ideal choice to lighten up a dull corner, to add beauty and grandeur to a room or simply bring forth a piece of history into their living rooms. For the latter option medieval tapestries are the perfect choice. Medieval tapestries are those, which have replications of medieval artistry and a piece of history attached to them such as these http://www.european-wall-tapestries.com/store/catalog/Medieval_page_1_c_2.html. Such tapestries bring through the canvas a depiction of a scene or an artwork made famous by a medieval artist.

Such tapestries go back to the renaissance and Arts and Crafts times. Medieval tapestries were intricately woven on fine fabrics primarily wool, for hundreds of years by different races and cultures. Egyptians as well as the Incas buried their dead in tapestries. The Greeks covered their walls like those of the Parthenon, with them. But the credit for excelling in this work goes to the French medieval weavers who with their exquisite work gave the tapestry a new dimension.

One of the highlights of medieval tapestry history is their work in the realm of Unicorn tapestries, rightly since the unicorn has always been a source of marvel and beauty, to the world. The medieval artisans in their attempt at capturing this magical creature have presented it in great depths and pictorial excellence apart from giving it a symbolic interpretation.

In the medieval ages tapestries were symbols of high art as well as items for practical use. Tapestries provided privacy for beds, insulation for castle walls and aesthetically closing awnings. Royalty made it a point to travel with their family tapestry place to place for their comfort as well as a show of prestige. Tapestries due to their richness of texture have always been associated with royalty; they epitomize the luxury and grandeur in their picture and luxurious feel too.

European and medieval tapestries come in different sizes, shapes and colors, and a host of European weavers have shaped the design trend, color scheme and subject matter so that the piece of work resembles that of the medieval ages as much as possible. The revival of interest in medieval tapestries, owe much to the endeavors of William Morris head of Arts and Crafts Movement in England. It must be understood that medieval tapestries are for art lovers and collectors with a taste for history, also that they primarily cater to a selective section of people who happen to be not only art lovers but also follow history and take an interest in the different ages that have exposed various art forms. <bio>To view other Medieval tapestries, please visit our home decor website http://www.european-wall-tapestries.com </bio>

The Middle Ages saw the beginning of early tapestry decoration and where wall hanging emerged as an authentic form of decorative art in the home. The Gothic style of Medieval tapestry has always prevailed with decorations of flowers, religious subjects and mythical creatures. They were thought to be the epitome of a tasteful home and even today continue to bring pleasure to the modern house. Nowadays tapestry is more affordable to people whereas it was once the domain of the very wealthy.

The imagery of medieval tapestry conveyed messages of love and redemption, of the senses and perception and deep religious meanings. A combination of the cultures of German and Roman Art ensured that religious themes remained a pillar to artistic development during the Middle Ages.

Medieval wall hangings have retained their popularity and are an exciting addition to the modern home. Classical designs from this period continue to please today and are charming pieces of wall art.

During the Middle Ages the Wool Season from June to July was an important time of year. This is depicted in the elegant tapestry, Travailler des Laines, showing a 16th century scene from the Loire Valley. Wall hangings were used to communicate and the work shows Tomas Bohier as adviser to Charles VIII supervising peasants. In those times people like Bohier would not have been directly concerned with the peasantry, however the tapestry has provided a resource for historians through time. This type of work would have been commissioned by the wealthy and offers a glimpse into the everyday world of the peasant.

The Lady and the Unicorn remain a classical set of Medieval tapestries that weave the senses with myth and legend. They can now be seen in the Cluny Museum in Paris and had almost not survived history, being restored after their discovery in damp conditions in 1844. They are believed to have been commissioned in the late 15th century, and their origin is unclear. This series contains the mille fleur pattern throughout which is a common feature of medieval tapestry. The theme for each hanging is slightly different and features a lady, a unicorn and a lion. Each tapestry is believed to represent the senses of taste, sight, touch, love, hearing and smell.

Les Vendanges is a charming medieval tapestry, complete with mille fleur decoration and shows peasants gathering grapes for the harvest. Medieval scenes were relatively rare and capture a vision of how life was in those times. This art from the gothic age was often bold in colour and really shows the level of creative artistry practicing at the time.

Medieval wall hangings continue to bring pleasure to the modern home. Their weave helps lift the colour and adds a warmth to the home. People are often surprised by the distinctive nature of a wall textile. There is so much choice in the medieval range of wall hangings that someone looking to enhance their home will not be disappointed with the selection of elegant wall hangings that are available.

Copyright © The Tapestry House, all rights reserved.<bio>Angela Dawson-field writes extensively on art, history and tapestry wall hangings .
Tapestry collections throughout the world have been celebrated by many. The vivid and dramatic colours and diverse interpretations have captivated audiences and have enabled artist's masterpieces to be transformed and reproduced through tapestry. Through the ages tapestries have been commissioned as a way of expressing art form. This may have been through dramatic religious belief, or in a representation of tradition and lifestyle using a more abstract symbolic approach. Museums now house many of the original tapestry collections which continue to exude a timeless appeal.

The Attraction of Medieval Tapestries

Some of the most well known and enigmatic tapestries are those woven during the medieval era. These works of art have stood the test of time and continue to appeal through their intricate design and detail.

Unicorns were incorporated into the design of many medieval tapestries, symbolizing good over evil and religious experience. One of the most famous sixteenth century collections can be seen in New York City at the Cloisters Museum. La Chasse de la Licorne, originally woven in France, contains a multifaceted array of symbolism and is believed to represent healing, particularly the horn of the unicorn. One theory behind the meaning of the series is that they were originally commissioned to celebrate a marriage and the Licorne Captive is representative of a lady capturing her betrothed.

The Lady and the Unicorn series shows unicorns representing the human senses such as touch, smell, and hearing and can be seen in the Cluny Museum, Paris. Many of the tapestries incorporating unicorns into their designs were based on religious beliefs, and a way of expressing emotions. Unicorns continue to appeal today to a wide audience.

A Medieval Raconteur- The Bayeux Tapestry

One of the most famous and well known tapestries of all time is in fact an embroidery. The Bayeux Tapestry was woven to celebrate the victory at the Battle of Hastings by William the Conqueror and is actually split into sections focusing on the story.

The precise origins of the tapestry remain a mystery and are thought to have been commissioned by Bishop Odo. Although there is a reference to the existence of the work in 1476 it has endured poor storage and was used to cover a cart during the French Revolution. Remarkably it has survived and has an enduring appeal.

Today this magnificent artefact is displayed in the Musee de la Tapisserie in the French town of Bayeux.

William Morris- Inspired Designs

William Morris tapestries signified the emergence of modern tapestry art, particularly those that could be adapted for middle class Victorian homes. Unique designs with striking and dramatic colours saw Morris become one of the most popular artists of his time. One example of his work entitled Ehret Die Frauen is displayed in the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester and was inspired by a verse by Schiller extolling feminine virtue. Other examples of Morris designs include the Tree of Life, Flora, Pomona, and the Woodpecker.

A Continual Inspiration

Textiles have been used throughout history for a variety of purposes and in differing art media.
Given below are few simple ways in which the medieval shields were made. You can make one for yourself in the traditional method.

Static: The symbol of Blazon means a family living on a land. After the death of the family head, the oldest son would take over the land and the family weapons. A sense of stability, infinity and eternity is symbolized by the coat of arms. According to the people of the Middle Ages, all things and people have a particular position on earth and they believe that these things should not be altered. You will not find recommendations for alterations and movements on the shields of the middle Ages.

Symbolic: All the pictures that were on the shields represented some thing. These symbols were more than mere symbols. Let's look at an illustration. An eagle or a lion symbolizes bravery. Such a picture was made in order to make the people understand what it meant and it wasn't necessary that the picture have to appear like an actual eagle.

Stylized: All the things and animals that were drawn on the shields were stylized and they were made in such a way that people would identify them easily. Logic didn't govern the creation of such pictures, rules did. Most of the time, the pictures were made in such a way that they displayed their essential distinctness properly like a unicorn's horn or a lion's mane. They were drawn from the front and not from side ways. Such a practice made sure that the description of the shield or the blazon would appear the same even though different artists made them.

Flat: The pictures that were on the shields were made without shading and in pure flat shades. Certain things were drawn in a bigger size not because they appeared bigger but because they were essential. The images were not drawn in perspective and neither were they made in the actual sizes. The castle and the horse may be of the same size because they were of equal significance and not because the horse was nearer to the onlooker. <bio>For medieval shields and other weaponry, please visit our website http://www.a2armory.com </bio>

Lucid dream induction is the art of making yourself dream lucidly. In other words, it's how to consciously start dreaming or how to "break into" a dream you realize you're having and take control.

One of the common techniques for inducing lucid dreams is called MILD, which stands for mnemonic induction of lucid dreams.

Don't worry, it's easier done than said!

In essence, this is like putting an alarm note in your cell phone. You're setting yourself a mental note to do something in the future.

Specifically, whilst you are in a dream state in the future.

Decide that you are going to briefly wake up the next time you notice you're dreaming. As soon as you wake, recall as much of the dream as possible. If you're regularly using a journal already, this should be a reasonably simple thing to do.

Then allow yourself to drift back off into sleep. Dr LaBerge, who invented this technique, claimed this is the best time to set your intention for your dream.

As you start to drift, tell yourself something along the lines of "Next time I'm dreaming, I will actually remember that I am dreaming". The exact wording you use is a lot less important than just remembering to tell yourself this, over and over again as you drift back into a sleeping state.

As you repeat that phrase or mantra, see yourself back in the dream you've just been having. Or, if nothing is particularly clear about that dream, another one that you've had recently. If that doesn't work, visualize yourself as though you're watching a movie of yourself dreaming.

Don't concentrate too hard, otherwise you'll stop yourself from going into a dream state and will find yourself wide awake through too much concentrating. It's far better to fall asleep during this process than keep yourself awake with it.

Ideally, do the next step whilst you're still in the process of falling asleep.

See yourself in the dream and notice something that clearly indicates it is a dream. Anything will do for this: a dragon wagging its tail whilst cooking a unicorn with its breath would be exceptionally clear. But its your dream, not mine, so notice anything that gives you a clear signal that you are in a dream state.

Say confidently to yourself "I'm dreaming". But continue with this twilight zone experience and allow yourself to drift further into the land of slumber.

You can use this process to set the intention of your dream at the same time if you want to. It's not essential to do this, but it can help point your dreams in the direction you want them to follow.

Keep repeating the process of setting your intention of remembering to notice when you are dreaming and to tell yourself that you've actually recognized it's a dream when you do notice. With a little practice, you'll start to become accomplished at spotting when it's a dream, not reality. You should then be able to enter a lucid dreaming state almost at will. <bio>Find out more about lucid dreaming at http://www.squidoo.com/dreamingluciddreams and discover the different things you can do to become a lucid dreamer: http://www.squidoo.com/dreamingluciddreams </bio>

So, you're considering a tattoo. It's quite a step to take. Along with the obvious things to consider like the pain involved, and the risk of infection, I think the most important thing you need to remember is a tattoo's permanence. One of my favorite Jimmy Buffet song lines is a tattoo is a andquot;permanent reminder of a temporary feelingandquot;.

Tattoo's have grown in acceptance and have become much more mainstream in the last ten or so years. It's interesting that tattoo businesses are now calling themselves tattoo andquot;salonsandquot; and tattoo andquot;studiosandquot; instead of using the old phrase tattoo andquot;parlorandquot;. In a 2003 poll it was found that 16% of American adults have a tattoo. You see many young women now with a lower back tattoo. Technology has helped advance the popularity of tattooing with better longer lasting colors and improvement in equipment. Helping the popularity also is the emergence of reality TV shows like Aandamp;E's andquot;Inkedandquot;. There are even forums on the web for people with tattoos and for people considering getting a tattoo.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of mass designed tattoo art works available, and, if one of them isn't right for you all that is standing in your way is your imagination and the right tattoo artist. Tattoo artists, like those featured in andquot;Inkedandquot; actually get followings due to the quality of their work. One of my favorite tattoos is a Rosie the Robot from the Jetson's (not that I would ever have one on my skin). There are of course animal tattoos, flower tattoos, bird tattoos, butterfly tattoos, demon tattoos, cross tattoos, heart tattoos, insect tattoos, skull tattoos and unicorn tattoos.

The care that you receive in a tattoo studio must be flawless. There are measures that each tattoo studio must follow in order to ensure a sterile environment for patrons. Each state may have their own laws governing tattoo studios. Some tattoo studios require their artists to have mandatory training in sterilization techniques. Check with the studio.

Also, how do you choose a tattoo artist? Perhaps, like me, you have a co-worker who isn't shy about pulling down her panties to reveal her large flower tattoo. Work of mouth is the best way to find a tattoo artist. Look at their work. Visit the studio, go several times. Look around, do you like what you see? Are the work areas clean? Do the artists seem to be following guidelines assuring cleanliness? How are they interacting with the patrons?

Make sure that you consider the tattoo process thoroughly. Having a tattoo removed can be painful, and costly too. <bio>To learn more about Tattoos http://www.tattoo-maven.info please visit http://www.tattoo-dragon.info </bio>

The popularity of tattoos among women is growing at an unprecedented rate. Over the past ten years, the number of women lining up at doors of tattoo studios has rocketed. Tattoos are now a mainstream fashion accessory for women, occupying the same category as shoes and handbags.

However, tattoos haven't always been popular among women. Fifty years ago, tattoos were almost the exclusive preserve of men. Only ten percent of tattoos belonged to women. And as recently as the 1980's there was a general belief in society that a women who got tattooed was either a criminal, a lesbian or a whore.

These days, things are completely different. The traditional stereotypes and stigmas that surrounded tattoos have been swept away and women have the confidence to wear their tattoos with pride. Women are now responsible for 65% of all tattoos. In fact the market for female tattoos has grown so rapidly that as many as one in four women in the US have a tattoo.

But apart from the change in the number of women who are getting tattooed, the female tattoo market has undergone a couple of significant changes.

1) Tattoo Placement

Previously, women who wanted a tattoo felt the need to position them on a part of their body where they could be kept well hidden. But these days women are proud of their tattoo designs and as such are placing them in more visible areas.

The stomach and lower back are two of the most popular areas for tattoo placement. This suggests that women want to have the choice of whether or not to display their designs. It also indicates that most women now have the confidence to select a more sexual placement of their tattoo designs. Other popular locations for female tattoos include ankles and the front of the hips.

2) Tattoo Designs

The type of tattoo designs that women want have also changed. In the past, the few women who got a tattoo opted for something small, discreet and well hidden, such as a name, a small flower or a cute design.

Today, the tattoo designs chosen by women are generally larger and much bolder. Increasingly, women are willing to experiment with the size and style of tattoos. The most popular designs now include shooting stars, fairies, butterflies and unicorn. Larger tribal and celtic designs placed on the lower back are also incredibly popular.

But beyond that, many women now have the confidence to seek out custom tattoo designs that will be unique to them. They're more style conscious than men, so they're no longer happy strolling into the tattoo studio, taking a quick glance through the catalog and becoming another one of the thousands who already wear the same design.

Instead, women tend to take their time when searching for their perfect tattoo. They're more likely to select a custom design, but only after ample consideration of how it will look and make them feel. This allows them to leave the tattoo studio with a design that they can wear with confidence and pride. <bio>Thinking about a new tattoo?
The practice of using herbal remedies for infertility had been in existence before any of the modern technologies were ever produced.

Despite its long history in the oriental regions, western medicine is still reluctant to endorse the practice as an integral part of infertility treatments. One simple reason may present us that such alternative medicines cannot be supported by the medical science that we were oriented to.

Therefore, acceptance even in the medical circles does not still penetrate. Nonetheless, there are medical practitioners that allow the use of herbal remedies for infertility in conjunction with more technical procedures so as to help gain balance in the treatment and benefit from both worlds as well.

While medical professions are hesitant in backing the use of herbal remedy for infertility, an increasing public demand has helped in the dissemination of information pertaining to the uses and benefits of so called 'alternatives'.

Herbal remedies used in infertility treatments are not the same as the conventional drugs.

If they don't work better as common sense may suggest, they just work differently and address the condition in a manner that is more holistic than the approach gained from infertility medications.

In general, herbal remedies in pills, herbs, powder forms seek the balance between the physical ailments and the effects they incur in the mind of the affected. Thus, producing an over-all treatment rather than the treatment of symptoms alone.

Herbal remedies for infertility seem to create more obvious results in women experiencing hormonal imbalances and irregular menstrual flow.
Knowing the hands of Texas Hold'em is so important you shouldn't play it if you don't. If you have to ask questions about hands during the game, you'll give your hand away. It's as simple as that.

To avoid embarrassment and begin to understand the game and the reasons you want the cards you do, check out the following hand rankings:

The Royal Straight Flush is a rare and beautiful creature in poker. It is the unicorn of poker. Even if you played every day of your life, you will rarely see one and even more rarely actually get one yourself. It is like the hole in one in golf. It is a straight. It is a flush. And it is made up of the highest cards in the deck. Look for an ace, king, queen, jack and ten of the same suit.

The Straight Flush is slightly less lackluster than it's more royal counterpart, but exciting and wonderful nonetheless. This hand is still rare and made up of five cards of the same suit, ranked in succession. An example would be the six, seven, eight, nine, ten of clubs in one hand.

Next, you'll be wanting the four of a kind. This is pretty obvious. You have a four of a kind when get four cards of the same number. Look for four kings, four tens, or four fives for instance.

The Full House is also a pretty good hand. It happens when you have three cards of one type and two cards of another type. To determine whether or not one full house ranks higher than another, look at the set of three cards first. The one that is larger wins. For instance three jacks and two tens beats three tens and two jacks.

A flush is something special, too. If you have five cards of the same suit, you're laughing, but be careful to hide your glee. You don't want to give your opponents an advantage. If there are multiple flushes, look for the hand with the highest card in the flush. An example of a flush would be a three, seven, ten, queen, and ace of diamonds.

After a flush, you're looking for a straight. This is when there are five cards in your hand that rank in succession. The ace can be played as either a high card or low card. Straights are very common in Texas Hold'em. Look for an eight of hearts, ten of spades, jack of diamonds, queen of hearts, and king of clubs for example.

The three of a kind is a more lowly creature, but it wins its fair share of hands. If you hit one of these with a pocket pair and one in the community cards, it's called "a set." If you have two cards in the flop and one in your hand, it's called a "three of a kind." Look for three fours, three queens, or three aces for example.

Two pair comes next. This is when your best five poker cards create a pair twice. Look for two aces and two queens or two fives and two threes for instance.

One pair is next. It's pretty self explanatory. Look for one pair in your hand. For instance, two threes or two jacks.

High card is the next hand in the ranking. This happens when you don't get anything and your hand only counts for the high card. Even if you had an ace, a pair of twos could beat you. <bio>Cyman Harrison writes for several Texas Holdem websites including http://www.PokerTipsandStrategies.com which provides resources to help poker players improve their skills.
