The place of business that accepts the credit card is called the "Merchant." In order to be able to accept credit cards, the Merchant must open a "Merchant Account" with a "Merchant Bank" which is also known as a "Sponsoring Bank" or an "Acquiring Bank."

This is the bank that receives the "Net Settlement Amount" from the Issuing Bank after the transaction is processed. The Net Settlement Amount is the amount of the actual sale minus transaction fees called the "Discount Rate." In some instances merchants may also have to pay "Pass-through Fees" which are additional transaction fees that are charged when a transaction does not meet some particular requirement such as passing the Address Verification System (AVS) test.

Credit Card Processing Steps

1.A transaction begins when the magnetic stripe on the back of the credit card is passed through a credit card terminal, or the credit card account number is entered into the system manually by either the merchant or the cardholder. This enters the transaction information into the Processor's network.

2.An "Authorization Request" is generated.

3.The Processor links up with the Visa/MasterCard network in order to transmit the Authorization Request to the Issuing Bank's computer network.

4.The Issuing Bank verifies that a valid credit card number has been received and that the Cardholder has enough money available ("Open to Buy") to fund the transaction.

5.A "hold" for that amount is placed against the Cardholder's Open To Buy thereby reducing the amount of his or her Open To Buy for future transactions.

6.Once the approval is received a "Deposit Transaction" is transmitted which finalizes the transaction. The merchant then releases the items purchased by the Cardholder.

7.The Net Settlement Amount is deposited to the Merchant's account usually by the end of the same business day.

When Credit Card Processing Go Wrong

There are times, however, when the process hits a snag and human beings have to get involved. Although it is 100% computerized, the Visa/MasterCard network is programmed with many "triggers" that will route the transaction to a human being for closer scrutiny when one of those triggers are pulled.

The most common triggers are:

Unusual spending patterns that do not match the Cardholder's normal purchases. Purchases of products or services that are considered to be in a "high fraud" category. Purchases made outside of the country where the cardholder lives. In fact, some Card Issuers require their Cardholder's to notify them when they will be traveling outside of their home country.

What's really amazing is not that the entire processing cycle is flawlessly repeated millions of times per hour, but that it all happens in just seconds! <bio>This article has been provided courtesy of Creditor Web, http://www.creditorweb.com . </bio>

In order to accept credit card payments, merchants need to have a payment processing method available to them. Typically, this means having use of a merchant account. This allows the merchant to accept major credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard. The downside to having a merchant account is the wave of fees that are attached to every transaction. Depending upon the merchant account contract, these fees can dramatically reduce the profitability of a transaction.

Today, more consumers are using debit cards to purchase items. While many merchants know that accepting debit card transactions will lower their payment processing fees, they often fail to realize that there are different types of debit card transactions, each with different fees. Below, we'll describe the difference between accepting debit cards and credit cards. You'll also learn how you can lower your fees even further by accepting direct debit transactions.

Debit Card Versus Credit Card Processing

From the merchant's point of view, there's only 1 notable difference between accepting a debit card and a credit card for a transaction. While a credit card allows the customer to tap into a credit line, the debit card allows the merchant to withdraw money for payment directly from a customer's bank account. The main benefit for the merchant is that processing a debit card transaction implies less risk for the bank. Therefore, the discount rate applied to the transaction is lower.

What Is A Direct Debit Transaction?

A direct debit transaction has the same result as a normal debit card transaction. The money is taken from the customer's bank account and transferred to the merchant. However, the process through which this happens is different. Processing a debit card for payment must be done through the merchant account. These transactions follow the same stream through the network as transactions processed with a credit card.

By contrast, a direct debit payment goes through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network. It's transferred between banks. As long as a merchant has authorization to process ACH transactions, the direct debt can be performed through a business checking account.

Lowering Fees Through Direct Debit

Even though processing a debit card transaction through your merchant account will usually result in lower fees than a credit card transaction, you can lower your fees further. A normal debit card payment will typically have a discount rate of 2-3% attached. A direct debit payment carries a flat fee. Most of the time, it's $1 or less per transaction.

Here's an example of how much you can save by accepting a direct debit payment. Assume a transaction is $200. Using your merchant account to process a debit card payment with a 2.25% discount rate, you would pay $4.50. Accepting a direct debit payment through the ACH network would cost $1 (or less). If you complete 300 transactions per month of similar size, you could save over $1,000 per month.

Getting Started With Direct Debit Payment Processing

Accepting direct debit transactions is simple. You should start by asking your bank if they can help you gain authorization for ACH payment processing. Unlike establishing a merchant account, you won't be required to sign a long-term contract. You'll likely be able to use your existing business checking account for processing the payments.

As a merchant, you will still need to maintain your merchant account to process credit card payments. But, for customers who wish to use their debit cards to purchase items, consider becoming authorized for ACH payment processing. It's transparent to the customer and less-costly for you, the merchant.<bio>This article is brought to you by PaySimple, a leading provider of merchant account services.</bio>

While the advent of information technology in conjunction with credit cards has made the life very convenient as any thing can be obtained at the click of a mouse, it has also increased the susceptibility towards frauds as well. The fraudsters after taking the cards and the PIN numbers do online transactions and lead to a situation of despair for many of us. There was an apprehension that with the intensity of online frauds increasing the luxury of conducting all the business related and personal transactions from the comfort of home may become a thing of the past. But it has not happened like that. After all, the creator is one step ahead than the destroyer. The lucrative business proposition that the credit card companies have created for themselves could not be allowed to die a slow death. So, the panacea was found in the virtual world itself, and the genie unplugged out of the bottle was Virtual Credit Cards. What is a virtual credit card?

A virtual credit card is a card that exists in a virtual world. It does not have any physical shape or size. The validity of the card is also transaction limited. The card has come into vogue so that the transactions can be done in the cyber world without using the physical card. This is to instill confidence in the user about the security of the transaction. Whenever a transaction is to be done through the credit card, and if it has an option to generate virtual credit card, it would give you an option of generating the same on screen, before the transaction is to be completed. This is done through a note or a dialogue box that would pop-up on the screen and would ask you whether you want to use the virtual credit card to complete the transaction. Virtual credit card therefore can also be termed as a pre-paid card in the virtual world.

As the virtual credit card is a pre-paid card with a fixed denomination value, it can only be used for a specific transaction and after that the card is destroyed from the records. For every new transaction that is to be done, a new virtual credit card is generated so the cheaters and fraudsters cannot con you even though they might have copied the number of the card stealthily, as it is self-destructing. When you use the virtual credit card, it provides protection about your financial information. The biggest advantage of virtual credit cards is that it comes with zero liability against any unauthorized purchases made from your account. Another advantage of virtual credit card is that as it generates a new number every time, there is no chance of number being misused at all. Besides, the virtual credit card is free of cost and no maintenance or membership charge is made on this card. If you are using it, there is no download or user charge as well for using the virtual credit card. You can be assured that the transaction done by you is safe as a dialogue box appears on the screen which announces that the information being passed on to the web is encrypted by a state of art encryption method. <bio>Devin Gilliland provides expert opinions and advice on how to manage and apply for credit cards at http://www.credit-wisdom.com </bio>

Payment processing fees can initially seem reasonable. But, millions of small and medium-sized merchants have found that the aggregate amount of fees charged on each transaction they process can quickly become overwhelming. A transaction that first appears profitable can become far less so once the various fees are paid for processing the credit card. Discount rates, authorization fees, batch fees and statement fees can add up to siphon the profit from a transaction.

Though small merchants have few options and little leverage in demanding lower fees, understanding how the charges accrue can open the door to alternatives. In this article, we'll clear the confusion about the major fees involved in a credit card transaction. After reading, you should have a few ideas regarding how you can save money on your payment processing fees.

Clearing The Confusion

Each credit card transaction that you process carries a host of various fees. The most significant can be summarized into 2 different camps: Interchange fees and merchant service provider fees. The Interchange fee is levied by the customer's credit card company. It includes a small percentage of the purchase amount as well as a smaller flat fee. The merchant service provider fee works similarly (percentage of the transaction and a smaller flat fee).

Most small business people are coaxed into a merchant account contract with a competitive "discount rate." This rate includes both the Interchange fees and the merchant service provider fees. The problem with this is the merchant doesn't actually know how much the merchant service provider is charging. Without knowing the amount, you can't shop for a better deal.

Understanding Why Fees Vary

There's another problem that adds to the confusion (and thereby prevents the merchant from finding a better deal). The fees levied on each transaction can vary based upon how the transaction has been categorized. There are more than 100 different categories. The end result is that the same item purchased at different merchants can have different fees attached. The categories are lumped into 3 levels, averaged and a margin is applied. This process causes payment processing fees to fluctuate for each transaction. The variance muddies the waters and makes it difficult to shop for lower fees.

Can You Negotiate?

The size of your monthly transaction volume will largely determine how much you can negotiate your fee arrangement. If your business consistently processes over $20,000 each month, you may be able to qualify for the Interchange fee (and pay an additional small transactional fee). If you don't process that volume, you likely won't have the option. That said, it's important to remember that much of the confusion lies in the combining of the Interchange fees with the merchant service provider fees (i.e. the discount rate). There's little you can do about the Interchange fees. But, if you can identify the fees charged merchant service providers, you can shop for the lowest rate.

Knowing Your Options

Unfortunately, most merchants don't have a clear understanding of how much they're paying for each type of fee. Worse, many don't attempt to find out. As a result, their transactions are loaded down with fees they could likely lower. If you're looking for a merchant account for a payment processing solution, identify how much of the discount rate is distributed to the merchant service provider. As a small business owner with a light monthly transaction volume, that will probably be your best chance to lower your payment processing fees.<bio>This article is brought to you by PaySimple, a leading provider of echeck services.</bio>

These are some of the fees that a merchant will pay when they process credit cards through a typical merchant accunt=85

Address Verification Fee

The fee charged to the merchant to perform address verification. This usually happens when a merchant has to key in a transaction if the mag stripe does not work.

Chargeback Fee

This is the fee charged by a bank when a chargeback is issued to a merchant. This varies from $15.00 =96 30.00 per transaction. (Plus the actual amount of the chargeback sale)

Check Guarantee Fees

Check Guarantee fees are basically structured similar to credit card processing fees. There is usually a percentage rate, transaction fee, statement fee, monthly minimum, and application fee.

Check Verification Fees

Check verification does not guarantee checks. Check verification checks whether the check writer has a history of writing bad checks. There is usually not a percentage fee associated with check verification

Debit Fees

Debit fees vary based on the debit network that issues the debit card. Debit fees are comprised of network fees and transaction fees.

Discount Rate (Per Transaction)

The discount rate is the fee charged by the acquirer to the merchant to process each transaction. This rate is dependent upon several factors, but usually the rate is either a retail (card present) merchant or a MOTO/Internet (card not present) merchant. (If the business owner is set up on a three tier system) Retail Rates are lower because they present less risk than card not present transactions. Card not present rates are higher due to the increased risk exposure to the bank.

Internet Payment Gateway Fees

A monthly fee associated with maintaining a merchant's secure payment gateway. Usually there is a setup fee, a monthly gateway fee, and/or a transaction fee. The monthly gateway is usually between $10.00-$25.00, and the transaction fee ranges from .05 - .15 per sale.

Investigation Fee

This fee is charged by some banks to investigate or research merchant transactions.

Monthly Fee

This is the monthly fee charged to the merchant in order to produce a monthly statement of transactions and will cover customer service. This statement will usually breakdown their total sales by day, average ticket amount and total charges.

Monthly Minimum Fee

This is a set minimum the bank charges each account. Monthly minimum fees range from $10.00 - $25.00. That means if the merchant doesn't process any transactions, the bank will still receive the monthly minimum fee income in order to service the account. Let's look at a merchant with a monthly minimum of $25.00. If they processed $1,000.00 in charges and the discount rate is 1.65%, the monthly discount fees will be $16.50, they did not reach the $25.00 minimum, so they will be charged the difference of $8.50. If they ran $10,000 in sales at a 1.65% discount rate, the monthly discount fee would be $165.00, so they would not be charged the $25.00 monthly minimum fee.

The monthly minimum only comes into play for low sales volume merchants.

Retrieval Fee

Fee charged to process a retrieval request.

Transaction Fee

This is a fee charged to the merchant to authorize a transaction.

Voice Authorization Fee

This is the fee charged if the merchant calls to Visa/MasterCard for a manual voice authorization.

Wireless Fees

Wireless terminals require a wireless network to process transactions. The monthly wireless access fees range from $15.00 =96 $30.00 and additional per transaction fees can range from .05-.35 per transaction depending on the carrier. <bio>Jerry Kadish and Capital Bankcard specialize in setting up gift and loyalty card programs and merchant services.
As a Realtor and Buyer's Agent, the most visible part of my job is searching for real estate, negotiating the property, and then contracting the property. Most people think that my job ends there. However, if I want to make sure that I continue to receive business referrals from my past clients, I have to make sure that every aspect of the transaction goes well.

Because of this, I have to be knowledgeable about every aspect of a real estate transaction: contracts, inspections, insurance, title, and most importantly, financing. The right financing can make a successful transaction, and a bad lender can turn a successful transaction into nightmare. I have long-standing relationships with many quality lenders -- I'm highly selective about who I work with, and very wary about outside lenders that find their way into my clients' transactions.

The Mortgage Brokers and Lenders who I know and trust make a habit of making promises, and keeping them. A bad mortgage broker will either choose to make no commitments to their client, or make promises that they have no intentions of keeping. Oftentimes, this has to do with interest rate -- which makes a huge difference in a buyer's monthly payment. Imagine contracting a home for a certain price that you were assured would mean a specific monthly payment, then being told that the price of the home was still the same, but you would pay hundreds more per month for the home. You wouldn't feel that the transaction went well, and I wouldn't receive business referrals from you.

Good Mortgage Brokers and Lenders create deadlines for themselves and the transaction, and they keep those deadlines. A bad mortgage broker will avoid making any commitments and will not respect your closing date. Buyers always assume that their lender knows and respects their closing date. However, when dealing with unknown lenders, I have seen bad lenders close 2-3 weeks late -- and sometimes not at all. When asked why the transaction won't close on time, it's typically "due to underwriting." This excuse is invariably used because the buyer and buyer's agent are not permitted to contact the loan underwriter.

Good Mortgage Brokers and Lenders maintain an open line of communication and contact their clients regularly. A bad mortgage broker will "disappear" for extended periods of time and has no set contact schedule. Many times, there is little to no news to report. However, clients oftentimes need the reassurance that everything is still on track and that nothing is needed of them. Good lenders understand this, and they make sure that clients hear from them on a regular basis, from first contact to closing.

There are small differences between good and great mortgage brokers and lenders -- lenders who attend closing, go the extra mile to make sure that their clients understand every detail of the transaction, etc... While a great mortgage broker can help to make your transaction great, avoiding bad lenders will help to make sure you're happy at closing. The only way to make sure you avoid a bad lender is to use someone who has been referred to you and who has an established track record. <bio>Eric Bramlett Broker/Realtor One Source Realty http://www.ericbramlett.com http://www.onesourceaustin.com Austin, Texas and Surrounding Areas Eric Bramlett is Broker/Owner of One Source Realty in Austin, Texas.
In the last few years, many credit card companies have begun charging foreign fees for purchases made with credit cards outside of the United States. Many customers have become frustrated, wondering why the banks and credit card companies would charge such fees. While it is easy to say that these companies just want more money, the situation is much more complex than this.

Many of the fees associated with credit cards are charged in order to pay for the costs involved with a variety of different transactions. It is important to remember that there are generally more risks involved with making credit card transactions in foreign countries. When you make purchases with your credit in a foreign country, there are likely to be problems with currency exchange, fraud, or charge backs. Because the costs involved with these things can be high, banks have decided to transfer the cost to the consumers.

Most foreign transaction fees are about 3% of the transaction, and this includes any foreign taxes or other fees you may have to pay. It is likely that these fees are permanent, and banks will continue to charge them as long as they are able to pay for the cost of making credit card purchases in foreign countries. Despite this, there are a number of things cardholders can do to avoid these fees. One thing travelers can do to avoid these fees is to use prepaid debit cards. Because they are not true credit cards, prepaid debit cards can help you avoid the foreign transaction fees.

However, you may find that many hotels, restaurants, and other establishments may not accept them. If you plan on using a prepaid debit card, it would be helpful to contact these places ahead of time to make sure your card is accepted. There are also a few credit cards that don't charge foreign transaction fees. Before you get a credit card, call the company to find out if they charge these fees. In the past, Discover and American Express didn't charge these fees, but they are not as well known as Visa or MasterCard, and may not be accepted at some foreign establishments.

Another thing you should consider is traveler's checks. They are widely accepted in most countries, and you can avoid the fees that are charged for credit cards. Though traveling will always be a bit more expensive, you can avoid certain fees if you do your homework. <bio>Joseph Kenny writes for the credit card comparison sites http://www.creditcards121.com and also http://www.cardguide.co.uk </bio>

You don't have to know how credit card processing works online in order to operate a successful business. There are many merchants who process thousands of dollars in transactions each month without knowing what is happening behind the scenes. That being said, having a rudimentary understanding of how money travels from your customer's credit card account to your bank account can be useful. Below, we'll give you a brief overview that describes the entire process. We'll begin when someone visits your website and follow the trail of the transaction until your bank receives the money.

What Your Website's Visitors See

When your visitor arrives at your website, they'll be able to choose the products they wish to purchase. By clicking on the appropriate link, they're transported to a page on your website where they can enter their credit card information. The shopping cart that you're using should calculate any taxes or shipping fees. Once your customer has filled in the necessary fields (address, phone number, etc.), they can validate their purchase decision by clicking a "Submit Order" button.

Preventing Fraud At The Gateway

Before the transaction and the accompanying credit card information reach your merchant account's bank, they must go through a payment gateway. At the gateway, the transaction is checked to ensure its validity. This includes making certain that the credit card number is correct and verifying the address and CSV code (normally found on the back of the credit card) to prevent fraudulent activity. If the customer's credit card is deemed invalid, a message is sent back to your website to alert the customer. If the credit card is valid, the transaction continues to the merchant account.

On The Way To The Merchant Account

The payment gateway transfers the money for the transaction from the customer's credit card account to your merchant account's bank. You don't actually have possession of the money (yet). Once the money arrives at your merchant account's bank, it's held there.

Payment Notifications

If the transaction is completed without issue, a message is sent to your website that notifies the customer. This message confirms to your customer that her credit card was charged for the appropriate amount and the transaction was processed successfully. Most merchant accounts are set up to also send an email confirmation to the customer. From your perspective (as a merchant), you'll be able to see the new transaction payment immediately.

Into Your Bank Account

The last step in the process is to receive the money into your bank account. The money is currently held at your merchant account's bank. Assuming that your merchant account is in your name (or the name of your business), you'll receive the money within a few business days. It's transferred automatically according to the agreement you signed when you established your merchant account.

A Smooth Process

The credit card processing system initially seems complex, but each step is refined to minimize fraud while making the transaction flow as smoothly as possible. Your customers usually won't be aware of what is happening behind the scenes. The only thing they'll see is a confirmation that their transaction was processed or a message letting them know their credit card was declined. On your end, you may need to reconcile the payment data from your merchant account with your own database. But, that can usually be accomplished by a simple download once you've programmed your system to import and merge the information.

Credit card processing plays a critical role in your online store sales. You now have a broad understanding of how that process works.<bio>This article is brought to you by PaySimple, a leading provider of echeck processing services.</bio>

With the rise in popularity of credit cards and debit cards, over 40% of offline transactions are now conducted using plastic over cash. With this set to rise to over 2/3 thirds by 2012, the question remains =96 should I be using a credit card or debit card? For most, the answer is far from simple, and comes as a result of a number of factors, such as the size of a transaction, the transaction type and your current liquidity. With so much to consider, we have prepared this guide to ensure that you are aware of the factors that influence the fundamental choice =96 debit card v credit card.

Credit Cards Advantages

1. Should you complete a purchase with your credit card, your credit card company will provide a dispute resolution service should things go wrong. They will actually refund you in the interim until they are able to find evidence to suggest either party was correct.

2. Strapped for cash? If you are unable to finance a purchase, but will have the capital in around 1-8 weeks, then a credit card could be for you, if you are aware of the costs that you will incur for borrowing.

Credit Card Disadvantages

1. The inherent disadvantage in credit cards is that it is all too easy to get yourself in a mountain of debt. To avoid this, you must only spend with a credit card, what you know that you can afford.

2. Credit card theft and issues relating to this are on the rise. Although you may be covered for a large amount of the transaction, this can cause worry and stress to credit card users.

Debit Card Advantages

1. You can only spend money you have. With a debit card, you will not be able to spend money that is not available in your bank account, this means that you will never be in red, and therefore the risk of debt spiraling out of control, is less of a worry to you.

Debit Card Disadvantages

1. Should you complete a purchase online and things go wrong, you will have nowhere to go apart from the merchant. That is why it is strongly recommended that a credit card is used for large scale, online purchases.

2. If you do not have the cash upfront for a purchase then you may find yourself unable to finance a transaction. If you had a credit card then you would be able to do this. <bio>Devin Gilliland is editor for http://www.credit-wisdom.com </bio>

We've all heard the children's song, 'Dem Bones'.

The foot bone's connected to the leg bone, The leg bone's connected to the knee bone, The knee bone's connected to the thigh bone, The thigh bone's connected to the back bone, The back bone's connected to the neck bone, The neck bone's connected to the head bone, Etc.

This same concept can be applied to ecommerce. For those who may not fully understand how ecommerce works let's try this:

The Consumer's connected to the Internet The Internet's connected to the Transaction Server The Transaction Server's connected to the Processing Network The Processing Network's connected to the Customer's Bank

Now, let's look the other side of the equation.

The Merchant's Website's connected to the Internet The Internet's connected to the Transaction Server The Transaction Server's connected to the Processing Network The Processing Network's connected to the Merchant's Bank

Both the consumer and the merchant are connected to the ecommerce shopping cart through similar channels, but like blood pumping through a body the consumer follows the links from checkout to confirmation and the information flows through the Transaction Server, Processing Network and customer bank before it flows back through to the seller through the Transaction Server, Processing Network where the money is deposited in the merchant's bank. This entire process only takes a few seconds.

The good news is all reputable shopping cart systems rely on encrypted technology to preserve the integrity of the online purchase. This means that a customer's credit card information is not in danger of being confiscated and used by a third party.

This is important because the success of ecommerce relies heavily on privacy and security. A reputable shopping cart system is a must for any serious web store.

The truth is, all your client really wants to be sure of is the safety of their information, the reputation of your business and if the transaction was complete. They may never know or even care how exactly it is accomplished, but the use of a secure shopping cart, the attention to the reputation of your firm and the use of autoresponders to alert the customer to the completion of the sale will be necessary for positive ongoing client relations.

You've worked hard to provide a quality product at a competitive price. You've worked to optimize your site for search engine success and you've added knowledge-based articles to your site -- so to use a football cliché, it would be a shame to drop the ball so close to the end zone. Make sure you have a secure shopping cart for present and future customers. They may just thank you by coming back. <bio>Scott Lindsay is a web developer and entrepreneur.
Shopping online can be wonderful. There's a virtual world of selections when it comes to the goods and services that you may need such as electronics and jewelry and they are all available at the speed of your mouse. However, there are many things to consider whilst shopping online; while we may not like to think about it, there are many scamsters on the internet just waiting to take your hard-earned dollar. In this article, we'll be discussing some things to consider before making a purchase online to ensure that you're getting exactly what you pay for.

First and foremost, you need to ensure that the transaction that you will be performing is done under the utmost scrutiny when it comes to security. When placing an online order, you send your credit card number through a host of lines and circuits. They may be intercepted if you choose to do business with a company that does not employ encryption. To be sure that you are performing a safe transaction, you need to ensure that the online retailer uses SSL technology to encrypt the data. To be sure that the SSL technology is performing, you should check the bottom corner of your web browser for a lock icon. This is your web browser's way of informing you that the transaction should be a safe one. If you don't feel safe giving your numbers over the internet, many retailers offer an option to call in by phone to process an order.

Next, it is important to know that the seller is a reputable one. To ensure that the business is on good terms when it comes to customer service, you may want to check their status with the Better Business Bureau. Located at <a href="http://www.bbb.org" >http://www.bbb.org, the site offers a place for consumers to file complaints with businesses that have performed poorly when it comes to a transaction or another aspect of customer service. You can look up a business on the website and see if they have any pending customer complaints or issues. If they seem to be straddled with a number of complaints, it may be in your best interests to avoid doing business with the company.

Last, but definitely not least, is reading the fine print. Many online scammers employ the use of fine print to tie you to some sort of agreement which you were not planning on. This may include extending a subscription fee, or issuing a cancellation fee should you decide to no longer need the business' services. Also, you may want to consider what the company's return policy is when it comes to merchandise purchases. Knowing exactly what you are getting into when performing a transaction is of the utmost importance when it comes to keeping your money safe online. <bio>Kadence Buchanan writes articles for http://lookwhosshoppingnow.com/ - In addition, Kadence also writes articles for http://forsocietiessake.com/ and http://1stconsumerinfo.com/ </bio>

In general, there are three ways to turn your web site into a place of business where your customers can buy products or services from you.

One way to do this is to get a merchant account and set up a professional private shopping cart. This method makes sense if you do consumer shows and need to take credit card orders, or if you otherwise have situations where you take credit card orders in person. On the other hand, if you are predominantly Web-based, you probably don't need to do this. Installing a shopping cart requires some serious elbow grease and some technical savvy. You also need to get a signed security certificate. In addition, the list of things that will wrong with the shopping cart is long and somewhat arduous.

Another way to do this is to use a payment transaction service. There are several, although the most recognizable is arguably PayPal. StormPay is a good secondary service. With a payment transaction service, the service basically runs the shopping cart for you, which means your customers will probably be more comfortable using the shopping cart function. Although these services do charge a small percentage of each transaction as a fee, it's pretty close to what you'd pay with a merchant account, with much less hassle. Many of these places will also let you accrue interest on any balance sitting in your account, so that's another benefit of using a payment transaction service.

A major drawback to the third party payment transaction services comes in the form of regulations. Because they are not banks, they also do not have bank regulations. This means that they can and do seize accounts or close them if transactions are in dispute. And make no mistake; they have no qualms to do so. You've probably heard many woeful tales about PayPal in particular, because of consumers who got accounts seized and closed, or hacked into. This can be generally avoided by making sure you have good customer service and that you e-mail your customers regularly. Make sure as well that you ship products, as applicable, as quickly as possible. In addition, make sure that you provide a tracking number so that customers can keep track of their shipments.

A third way to do this is to get an eBay shop or an Amazon.com shop. Downloadable electronic products like e-books also have other sources. A PayPal transaction will cost you, in general, to 2 to 3% of the purchase price. However, these shops will take anywhere from 10 to 25%. On the other hand, they also calculate shipping for you and provide something very important to you: they get you exposure.

Amazon.com and eBay are both very well known businesses. No tiny business web site will get exposure like Amazon.com or eBay can. You can also create your own web site and use Amazon shops or eBay shops to make a combined multidimensional sales process.

In short, all of these techniques work in specific situations. Most will take at least a little bit of homework to figure out how best to set them up. Although we can't go into detail here because they change so often, you can do your homework regularly, to keep up with them. <bio>For more information and reviews please visit us at: http://www.xsiteprowebsitedesignbuilder.com </bio>

All transactions where a credit card is not physically swiped through a terminal, including internet transactions, phone transactions, or credit-card numbers keyed into a terminal, fall into this category.

CREDIT CARD RATE TYPES

The rate for each credit card transaction type is determined by both the kind of card used, the way it is processed, and the time it takes the merchant to batch the transactions for processing. It is important to know whether you do mostly card present or card not present transaction when selecting a plan type, because card not present charges are significantly higher in a Type 1 plan than in a Type 4 plan.

Type 1 (or Retail)--This type of account is designed for card-present transactions.

Type 1 Qualified--The card is swiped through a terminal, and the merchant batches the transactions within 24 hours. Most swiped credit cards will fall into this category. It is typically the lowest rate.

Type 1 Mid-Qual--This rate applies to rewards cards and key-entered transactions. It also applies to charges batched in 24-48 hours, that would be Qualified had they been batched sooner.

Type 1 Non-Qualified--All corporate and government cards are charged this rate regardless of batch processing time. Other transactions batched after 48 hours are also charged this rate. This is typically the highest rate charged.

Type 4 (or MOTO)--This type of account is designed for card-not-present transactions.

Type 4 Qualified--Most transactions fall into this category, provided the merchant batches transaction within 24 hours. This is the lowest Type 4 rate.

Type 4 Non-Qualified--All corporate, government, and reward cards are charged this rate regardless of batch processing time. It also applies to charged batched after 24 hours that would otherwise be Qualified had they been batched sooner.

DEBIT CARD RATES

Debit cards are classified the exact same way credit cards are, but the rate for a debit card transaction of the same category and type is typically lower than the rate for a credit card.

MONEY SAVING TIPS

1. If you have an account that gives you good rates for card-present transactions it will typically penalize you heavily for card-not present transactions. However, you can get a Merchant Account that is designed for these Card Not Present transactions that will provide you with substantially lower rates. Thus, before selecting an account you need to understand the type of transactions you use most. Also note that it is very important to immediately destroy credit card information provided in writing or over the phone and to store electronically submitted information (such as that submitted over the Internet) on a secure server.

Tip: If you regularly have both types of transactions, create two accounts. One Type 1 account and one Type 4 account.

2. Make sure your credit card processor is giving you separate lower rates for Debit Card transactions. They can afford to charge you less for these transactions, because their risk of non-payment is substantially lower. Approximately half of the transactions nationally are actually debit cards transactions, so if you're not getting the benefit of a lower rate, you are paying too much.

Tip: Very low Type 1 Qualified Debit Card rates are often advertised as teasers to get people to switch Merchant Accounts. Know what percentage of your transactions fall into this category before making a switch.

Merchants: Make sure you know what you are really paying! <bio>Lisa Hephner, PaySimple Marketing Manager - PaySimple offers some of the lowest credit and debit card processing rates available for all types of transactions.
Before you get started with a rent to own deal it is very important that you are aware of all the details. When it comes down to it, a rent to own transaction is not something that you should take lightly. Although it is not the same as buying a home, you are still making some major changes in the way that you live. And anytime that you are going to be spending money on real estate, you need to make sure that you are 100 percent aware of what you are doing.

Here are three details to consider when it comes to rent to own real estate. These details should help you when moving forward with getting started.

1. A rent to own transaction means that you do not have to pay money for closing costs or a down payment. But with that in mind, you are going to have to pay rent each month; as the name implies. Additionally, your landlord may charge you a bit extra each month so that it can be put towards the purchase price in the future. These are all things that you have to work out before a deal is put in place.

2. You should carefully read your rent to own contract to ensure that you are not required to buy the home after the rent period is over. As you can imagine, you may live in the home for a few months, and then decide that it is not right for you. When it comes down to it, you want to make sure that you have the right to walk away if you are not satisfied with what the property has to offer.

3. You need to make sure that your landlord is being fair with you. A deal that sounds too good to be true probably is. If you are not comfortable with the rent to own terms that you are being offered, there is no reason that you should sign on the dotted line. Remember, the rent to own may know more about rent to own real estate than you. In turn, they have the advantage when negotiating.

These three details should help you if you are thinking about getting involved with rent to own real estate. You want to make sure that you know exactly what you are getting so that your transaction turns out just how you thought it would.

For Rental Properties in Mumbai(Bombay), India check the link http://www.bharathrentals.com/browse/all/all/Mumbai <bio>James Gunaseelan writes for rental portal http://www.BharathRentals.com </bio>

In order to accept credit cards either online or through your physical storefront, one of the things you are going to need is an account with a credit card processing provider. A Credit Card Processing Provider is a company that manages the interface between your credit card terminal or shopping cart software and the Visa/Master network.

Since you are paying a portion of each credit card transaction to your credit card processing provider, it is important that you fully understand the services that your provider offers and how much you are going to pay for these services.

The rate that you will be charged depends upon many factors including the type of product or service you sell and the amount of the average sales transaction. Using this information you can shop around to find a credit card processing provider that offers you the best value for the least money.

For example, if you sell mostly high-ticket items you may be better off finding a provider that will offer you a higher flat-rate transaction fee and a lower discount rate. It may be better for you to pay as much as a $1.00 per-transaction fee when combined with a lower discount if your profit margin can handle it. On the other hand, if you sell a lot of low-priced items, you are better off finding a provider that offers a very low per-transaction fee and a discount rate somewhere in the area of 2.5% or less.

Be Prepared To Pay A Penalty For Poor Credit

If your personal or business credit is below par, you are not going to be able to negotiate much in the way of processing and transaction fees. If that's the case, look for credit card processing providers that work with people who are in your particular credit situation. But don't go with the first one that makes you an offer. Even though you may not be able to negotiate, you can still shop around for the best deal.

Look For Technical Integration Issues

Your online ordering software needs to be able to communicate seamlessly with your credit card processing provider's software through a program that is known as a "Gateway." Not all providers offer gateways that are compatible with all shopping carts. Make sure that yours is.

Evaluate Your "Risk"

There are a number of credit card processing providers that will not do business with start-up companies or companies that serve certain markets such as the Adult Entertainment or Gambling industry.

Be prepared to pay higher fees if you are in those industries and be prepared to spend some time finding a credit card processing provider that is willing to serve you. The best way to find one that serves your industry is to check your competitors' sites and see which providers they are using.

Do You Need International Processing?

If your business has a global presence that requires you to handle credit card transactions from outside of your home country, you are going to need an international credit card provider.

Some merchants choose one provider for their domestic transactions and another for their international transactions since the fees are usually higher when the customer is from another country.

Your best advice is to shop around, read the contract carefully and completely before signing, and have your attorney and accountant review all of the paperwork before you commit. That way you'll know for sure what you are agreeing to and you'll have a much better chance of running a profitable business when you can control your credit card processing costs. <bio>This article has been provided courtesy of Creditor Web, http://www.creditorweb.com . </bio>

Electronic check conversion is becoming more popular these days and consumers should know what it is and how it can affect them. The last thing anyone wants is to bounce a check or to have a clerk deny a sale because of a lack of funds in your account.

So what is electronic check conversion?

In simple terms, electronic check conversion is a transaction in which your written check is used only as a source of information. The information taken from it includes the check number, your account number, and the number that identifies your financial institution or the routing number. This information about your check is then used to make a one-time electronic payment from your account. This is also known as an electronic funds transfer. The written check itself is not the method of payment, which is the main difference between what we used to know about check payments.

You will know that an electronic check conversion is taking place because, by law, when you provide your check, you must be given notice that information from your check may be used to make an electronic payment from your account.

Consumers should understand that there may be different ways that this information is given to them. For example, a credit card company might put a notice in your monthly bill telling you that if you pay by written check, your check may be used to make an electronic fund transfer from your bank account.

For those who use checks at stores that use electronic check conversion, you will receive notice in two different ways. The first notice is a posted sign, usually located at the register, which states that if you pay by written check you are agreeing to let the store make an electronic fund transfer from your account. The second notification is a copy of the posted notice that you keep for your records. In most cases, this second notice usually appears on your sales receipt.

It is important for all consumers to understand that an electronic transaction may be processed faster than a check. For this reason you want to make sure that you have the money in your account when you make the transaction.

Your bank will not return any checks that are converted, even if you normally receive your original checks or images of those checks with your statement. This is something new to many consumers. In addition, you have different rights with an electronic check conversion transaction than you do with your normal check payments.

With an electronic check conversion, consumers have the legal right to an investigation by bank when an error occurs. Consumers also have the right to receive notice that if they provide a check as payment, information from the check may be used to make an electronic payment from their account. You must also be notified of any fees that the store collects if there is not enough money in your account to cover the transaction.

Consumers should understand that merchants can charge for non-sufficient funds just as they can do with written checks if there is not enough money to cover the purchase. This is the same as with written checks. <bio>Peter Kenny is a writer for The Thrifty Scot, please visit us at http://www.loansubmit.co.uk/debt-consolidation-loan/ and http://www.thriftyscot.co.uk/Mortgages/ Visit http://www.thriftyscot.com </bio>

Credit card processing has become an ease for customers and an advantageous tool for business owners. Credit card processing does not just add to the status of a business, but is also the best way to increase the sale of any business or trade. The array of benefits makes business and credit card processing go hand in hand.

Credit card processing is a process where customer gets to pay for his/her payment by simple swiping of its credit card through a credit card processing equipment or machine. The whole procedure of credit card processing to complete a money transaction consist of a network of credit card holder, credit card provider and the trader or merchant account holder.

Before owning a credit card processing service to facilitate a business with series of advantages and bonuses, a trader or a business owner needs to open up his/her merchant account. This merchant account allows a business to provide its customer with the quick mode of money transaction. In business, two kinds of merchant account are available i.e. OTC (over the counter) and MOTO (money order/telephone order). Out these two, OTC is the kind of merchant account suitable for a land based business where the transaction fee is less and MOTO is the kind of account suitable for online business.

But for any business to have a merchant account in order to begin with credit card processing service, there are eligibility parameters to be cleared i.e. every merchant account provider will check for the work history of the particular business as well as the current status and feedback of the company. A merchant account may provide a business with credit card facility, improved sale and good customer feedback, but before you pick up on a merchant account providing company do not forget to search well, compare the services and get a clear understanding of the fees and charges for money transaction. Also, whether the merchant account you wish to choose supports your choice of credit card or not (example: VISA, American Express and Master Card). Banks, Third Party Processor, Associations and many more such credit card processing companies offer merchant account with variety of offers and scheme.

For an ecommerce transaction, credit card processing acts as savior from all the hassle of cheque collection or payment collection from the client. Also, a credit card processing service adds to the visitor list of the site as well as boosts up the sale and ranking of the business.

Business and credit card processing makes buying and selling process easy, fast, convenient, flexible and reliable (in terms of safety for both the business owners and customers). It saves a business from a long/delayed transaction as well as from bounced/invalid cheque or draft. Similarly, the secured system behind the whole process also encourages customers to use the power of purchasing anytime, anywhere without worrying about the safety of their account. Thus, this combination of business credit card processing has become a need of changing trend and busy lifestyle. <bio>Devin Gilliland provides expert opinions and advice about apply for credit cards and credit card processing at http://www.credit-wisdom.com For credit card processing visit: http://www.credit-wisdom.com/credit-card-processing.php </bio>

Traditionally small to mid sized businesses have been set up with what is called multi-tier pricing for their credit card processing. This system is usually set up with three tiers (qualified, mid-qualified, and non-qualifed.) Occassionally, if the business owner has negotiated well, there will be a fourth tier for qualified offline debit cards. While this system has worked well for many years, the increasing number of rewards and corporate cards being issued has made this type of pricing obsolete.

Visa and Mastercard have many different interchange categories for the multiple card types that are issued. Tier pricing takes a large number of these categories and lumps them into one of the three tier buckets available to the merchant. If the merchant only ever takes standard credit cards then this system will work well for them. Once they start to see more debit, rewards, and corporate cards being used in their place of business they will notice that their merchant services bill has increased dramatically. This is because many of these transactions are falling in to the mid or non qualified transaction categories.

Some of these cards are actually not that much more to process than a standard credit card, but the underwriting company for the merchant account needs to make sure that they are profiting on every transaction. They can ensure profit if they charge a large mark up for any transactions that are not qualified. So you may pay 2.9% for a mid qualified transaction and 3.5% for a non qualified transaction (These numbers can range much higher and lower.)

The fact is that some of the cards that fall into these categories may only cost an additional quarter of a percent to process. So the merchant may over pay by 1-2% to run certain card types. The business owner can avoid this if they are set up on interchange plus pricing.

What interchange plus pricing does is pass the true cost of running the card right through to the merchant. So the fees associated with that individual transaction will be put through at the lowest possible cost. The business owner pays a mark up at the end of the month based solely on their number of transactions and the sales dollar volume. (typically .25-.50% plus $.10-$.15 per trnasaction.)

This system will almost always prove to be a better deal than a three tier structure. Make sure to check your latest credit card processing statement to look for a high number of mid or non qualified transactions. If you see them, then setting up an interchange pluse pricing system may be the way to start saving your business money. <bio>Jerry Kadish and Capital Bankcard specialize in setting up gift and loyalty card programs and merchant services.
The ACH processing network connects financial institutions throughout the U.S. Overseen by the regulatory agency, NACHA, this network supports the seamless transfer of funds in and out of bank accounts. As the costs of accepting physical checks is rising, business owners are looking for ways to run their companies more efficiently. Many businesses are turning to ACH processing to expand their customer base and increase their revenues. In this article, you'll discover 4 benefits of using ACH processing for your business.

#1 - Faster Access To Funds

Often, merchant banks will not release funds from credit and debit card transactions for several days or weeks. They want to protect themselves from the risk of not getting paid. That is, if they release the funds to the merchant prior to receiving them from the issuing bank, the transaction could later be denied. ACH processing is much quicker. Funds are often available within 1 or 2 days because the funds clear through the network more quickly.

#2 - More Convenient

Any business owner who has accepted checks for purchases knows how inconvenient they are. Customers forget to sign the checks, leaving employees responsible for double checking the information. The checks can easily become lost. Plus, a merchant must endorse the checks and then travel to the bank to deposit them. Often, checks bounce and merchants are forced to pay extra fees. All of these things take time. By contrast, ACH processing precludes the use of checks. The money for a purchase can be debited directly from a customer's checking account. It is much more convenient, saving time and money.

#3 - Cost Effective

Many merchant accounts and third party payment processors charge high fees for each transaction. What's more, the fees increase with the size of the transaction. In other words, the fees that a merchant will pay to process a large purchase will be more than those applied to small purchases. By contrast, the fees that are applied for each ACH transaction are fixed, regardless of transaction size. While a large purchase that is processed through a merchant account may cost several dollars in fees, an ACH transaction will typically cost less than $.50.

#4 - Easy Recurring Payments

There are millions of businesses which charge customers' credit cards monthly or annually. For example, newsletter publishers, book and music clubs, and health food companies often levy monthly membership fees. Aside from a few administrative tasks, the recurring billing is automated.
