Nail fungus happens when fungi and bacteria get into your nails through a cut or tear. Nail fungus can be a bit difficult to treat because repeated infections are common. It is also be tricky since the fungus is found under the nail and can be hard to reach. However, there are a variety of treatments you can use to hasten the healing of your fungal infection.

1. Oral medications

In the past, a somewhat toxic oral medication called griseofulvin (Fulvicin) was the only known drug that has the efficacy of treating fungal nail infections. Now there are other oral antifungal drugs that can cure nail infections. These are Itraconazole (Sporanox), Fluconazole (Diflucan) and Terbinafine (Lamisil). These medications help a new nail grow which is free from infections and replaces the infected portion of your nail. They are normally taken from six to twelve weeks and you won't be able to see the results until after your nails have grown back completely.

Oral medication should not be taken lightly because they can be dangerous and have been known to cause several side effects. They may affect liver and kidney functions and severe skin rashes. They are not recommended for people with liver and heart diseases.

2. Antifungal Creams

Antifulgal creams are one of the most common nail fungal treatments. They can be over the counter or prescription medicine which you can apply directly over the infected area of the nails. Antifungal creams are used for mild to moderate cases of nail fungal infections and can be used in conjunction with oral medications for a more effective cure.

3. Vicks Vapo Rub

Vicks vapa rub has been said to treat nail fungal infections. However, no scientific studies have been made to validate this claim even if there are some people who said that it is effective.

Due to its antibacterial nature, Tea Tree Oil has always been used as treatment for a number of different bacterial and fungal infections. Its most common use is against, cuts, acne or pimples and yeast infections. However, some people found out that it can be an effective treatment for the milder cases of nail fungus.

4. Antifungal Lacquer

For mild to moderate nail infections, doctors might prescribe to you an antifungal nail polish called ciclopirox. You paint it on your nails as you would an ordinary nail polish. Do this everyday for seven days then wipe it all off and start with fresh applications. Use of ciclopirox on a daily basis for one year has been shown to treat nail fungal infections.

5. Surgical Nail Removal

For recurring and severe cases of nail fungal infections, this may very well be the best treatment option. The infected nail is removed and an antifungal cream is used to treat the infected area. Because the area of infection is exposed the efficiency of antifungal creams can be maximized.

Whichever treatment you prefer to use, will depend of the severity of your infection. For mild cases self-medication with topical creams will be okay. However, it is always best to consult a doctor to get an accurate diagnosis and cure. <bio>Author is the webmaster of http://www.toe-nails-fungus.com and http://www.squidoo.com/fingernail-fungus-infection. </bio>

Most women think that because they get regular pedicures their feet and toenails are clean and safe from infections. What they don't realize is that women are more susceptible to toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders. Think of the variety of shoes most women squeeze their feet into for the sake of looking fashionable. Most of women's footwear sacrifice comfort and ultimately, the health of their toes.

According to David Wong, a dermatologist from Sydney, the most common toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders are onychomycosis, Athletes Foot, bunions, and tinea. These are often infectious, ugly, and uncomfortable conditions which may affect the ability to do daily activities. He also stressed that nail infections are not cosmetic problems. It is not also a matter of cleanliness. You are at risk of fungal infections even if you're toes and feet are squeaky clean. Regular pedicures are not the answer since feet specialists at most salons are only trained and equipped to beautify feet and toes, not to cure these infections. What's more, most think that toenail discolorations are just that, discolorations. They think that these can be covered up by the latest nail polish trend. What they don't know is that these discolorations can be symptoms of toe infection. He names stubbing toes, too-short nails, and wearing tight foot wear as most common causes of infections because these weaken nails and opens nail beds for contamination of bacteria.

Aside from discolorations, other symptoms of toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders are nail crumbling, thick nails, and brittle nails. Extreme cases might even cause nails to separate from their beds. The skin around the infected nail might also collect pus. Foul foot odor is an almost sure sign of fungal feet infections. If you are thinking to avoid damp places to avoid getting infected, Dr. Wong states that damp places are not the only place where you might be infected. Places where skin can get contact like carpets, mats, linens, and other towels are also possible places to incur infections. Public places like public pools, showers, hotels, motels, changing/locker rooms, and laundry service rooms are high infection risk areas. Sharing foot wear is also a culprit in getting infections. He emphasized to avoid borrowing or lending of footwear like socks and shoes to reduce risks of infections.

Dr. Wong advocates immediate medical action if you suspect being infected by toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders because it is uncommon for these infections to heal on their own. Early medication and treatment could prevent fungi to grow, hence, stopping the progress of the infection. At the first symptom of nail disease, consult your doctor to avoid unpretty feet. <bio>For more valuable information on toe fungus, please visit http://www.fungustoe.com </bio>

You may need toe nail fungus medication for your fungal problem. In most cases, not getting any kind of treatment for nail fungi is simply not an option. Leaving your infection untreated could result in very ugly nails. Some experts also say that untreated infections could lead to more serious infections.

Oral Medications

Medicines for nail fungi can be prescribed by your doctor. You may have to resort to oral medication if your infection is a little bit advanced and is no longer receptive to topical treatments. Before you begin your treatment regimen though, there are a couple of things you should know about oral medicines.

- They do not work overnight. There is simply no magic synthetic pill for toe nail fungus. You would have to be under medication for two months or more. After that, a new, clean nail will begin to grow. In some cases though, toe nail infections could drag on to a little over one year. Nail fungi are typically resistant even to the best medicines.

- Some medicines can't be taken without a health price. This is simply another way of saying that some oral medications for nail fungi may cause some side effects. The least that you could expect would be skin rashes. There are however, other possible serious side effects caused by prolonged medicine intake.

- Oral medications will not protect you against succeeding infections. Even if you have successfully treated an initial infection, you could get infected again. This is especially if you continue to be exposed to the same conditions that put you at risk of infections. That includes walking barefoot in wet, public places.

Natural Product Options

There are other options besides toe nail fungus medication. One option would be to settle for natural products that have been specifically made to fight nail fungus. Natural products do not cause any side effects and are therefore generally safe to use. Good natural products contain only the best natural ingredients that have been traditionally known to fight against fungal infections.

Do take note though that natural products are also not magic bullets. Like medicines, it could take a lot of time before you are completely free from fungi. You would have to ensure weeks or months of constant and diligent application. Getting infected again after successful treatment is possible.

It is also generally advisable to use natural products only at an early stage. They work best against nail fungi if you use them as soon as you spot initial symptoms such as white nail spots. Natural solutions may not work very well if you use them during the advanced stages of your infection.

Be careful with your product choice. Not all products are what they say they are. If you want to be sure that you have a good natural product, read some product reviews and research on product ingredients.

Your treatment option is a matter of choice. You could opt for toe nail fungus medication or a natural product solution. What is important is that you are aware of what to expect in these types of treatment.<bio>What is the common cause of nail fungus?
Listerine Can Help Cure Nail Fungus

Although Listerine is well known as a superior germ-killing mouthwash, it has many other uses including treatment for nail fungus. Many people have reported that their nail fungus problem is cured by soaking their foot or finger in Listerine.

Listerine can be used like any other soaking solution such as hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, etc. Some people add a tiny bit of household bleach to the soaking solution. Either powdered bleach or liquid bleach may be used. It generally takes a few months of using Listerine before the nail fungus is cured. For best results, the fungus sufferer must soak his or foot in Listerine at least thirty minutes each day.

Although this treatment is generally effective it is a very slow method of treating the nail fungus. You may have to use this treatment for several months before the nail fungus infection is completely cured. However, you should have almost immediate relief from the itchiness, pain and swelling that often accompany nail fungus infections.

Skipping the treatment for even one day can slow down the healing process. The treatment must be continued until the nail begins to look healthy and not discolored or disfigured. For more info see http://www.treatnailfungus.org/treatment/PreventionNailFungus.htm

Some people say mixing vinegar to the Listerine solution brings results much faster. Vinegar creates and acidic environment in which fungi cannot thrive. Vinegar almost instantly relieves the itchiness that is associated with nail fungus infections. Any type of vinegar will work but most people use regular white vinegar. Some people take two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar by mouth twice a day to help prevent and cure nail fungus infections. Because the taste of apple cider vinegar is offensive to many people, it is often mixed with fruit juice before it is put on the spoon.

Rather than soaking in the Listerine and vinegar mixture, some people simply paint it over the affected nail to get the desired results. While there is no scientific evidence to back up Listerine's role in treating fungus infections, it is not likely to do harm and it is a cost effective way to address the problem. Prescription medications to treat nail fungus often cost 8-10 dollars per day and that become very expensive if the nail fungus lingers. Given the expensive of prescription medications, Listerine for nail fungus is certainly worth a try. <bio>Learn more information at http://www.treatnailfungus.org/treatment/how-to-treat-the-nail-diseases.htm= l on treating toenail fungus disease and http://www.treatnailfungus.org/treatment/new/Listerine-toenail-Fungus.htm on Listerine review for treating nail fungus </bio>

The first symptom of a toenail fungus infection is discoloration of the nail. The symptoms of a nail infection will vary depending on the type and severity of the infection.

Nail fungus infections, also known as onychomyscosis, account for about half of all nail disorders. They can be difficult to treat and repeated infections are common. The infections are particularly prominent in nails that have been continuously exposed to warm, moist environments like sweaty shoes or shower floors.

Toenail fungus infections usually begin with a white spot under the tip of the nail. As the fungus spreads deeper into the nail, the following symptoms may occur:

=95 Thickened nails =95 Brittle, crumbly or ragged nails =95 Nails that are distorted in shape =95 Nails that are flat and dull =95 Yellow, green or black nails =95 Pain in and around the nail bed

The nail may develop white, yellow or brown patches. In some cases the nail may become brittle and appear chipped. There may also be flakey, scaly skin surrounding the infected nail.

A toenail infection that has an unpleasant odor may be in advanced stages and you should see a doctor immediately. If the infection is severe, you will have significant pain and will find it difficult to walk.

Thickening of the nails is another symptom of toenail fungus infection. If your nails thicken, you may find it difficult to wear shoes. Sometimes thickening leads to an ingrown toenail which can be painful and limit mobility.

If the symptoms are left untreated, fungal infections of the nail can cause permanent damage to the nail, leaving it ragged and distorted. The fungus can spread to the skin surrounding your nail causing paronychia, a surface infection of the skin around the nail.

Paronychia can cause painful lesions, redness, swelling and pus-filled blisters. You can avoid the pain and embarrassment of paronychia by treating your nail fungus infection symptoms in their early stages. For more info see http://www.treatnailfungus.org/Symptoms/toenailabnormalities.html

The type of treatment plan you choose will depend on the severity of your symptoms and your personal preferences. Some people prefer to try home remedies before consulting a physician for prescription medications. Many of the prescription medications that are available to treat nail fungus infections have unpleasant side effects. The most commonly prescribed oral medications are Sporonax, Diflucan and Lamisil.

It is important monitor your nail fungus infections symptoms to make sure they do not worsen. For effective treatment, you should address nail fungus infection symptoms when they first appear. <bio>You can also find more information at http://www.treatnailfungus.org/treatment/new/Over-the-counter-medication.ht= m on nail fungus medication and http://www.treatnailfungus.org/treatment/diet-for-fungal-infection.html on fungal infection. </bio>

Candida is the genus name for a number of bacterial yeasts. The most common variety is Candida albicans. It lives in the small intestine and the mucous membranes, where it generally doesnandamp;#8217;t cause any trouble because it is kept in check by the andamp;#8220;friendly bacteriaandamp;#8221; that live there, too. But if the balance is upset, Candida can thrive and start to cause problems, including infections on the fingernails and toenails. While nail infections are common enough -- about 7 percent of adults suffer from them, usually in the toenails as opposed to the fingernails -- the leading cause is not Candida but fungi from the genus Trichophyton. Those fungi are responsible for the vast majority of nail infections. Still, Candida is sometimes to blame. Whatever the specific cause, if a fungus invade the nails, it is known as onychomycosis

Studies show that men are twice as likely to suffer from nail infections than women are, and that the likelihood increases with age. Also, those with compromised immune systems (as with HIV) are particularly susceptible to it.

In the most common kind of nail infection, distal subungual onychomycosis (DSC), the fungus enters between the tip of the nail and the toe (or finger, but rarely) and causes the nail plate to separate from the skin underneath it. The nail also turns white, green, or yellow.

There is usually no pain at first, but the nail is ugly, and people suffering from onychomycosis are often embarrassed to let others see it and may avoid social situations where it would be visible. Because of that, while the infection may not be painful or medically dangerous, treating it is more than merely a cosmetic consideration. Psychologically, no one wants to have something dead and ugly attached to their bodies.

As the fungus progresses, the nail becomes thick and hard and separates farther from the toe. Also, dead, dry material collects between the nail and the nail bed. Sometimes it becomes painful, though often, if the nail is thick enough, the pain is negligible or absent altogether.

The most effective treatments for nail infections, whether candida-induced or otherwise, are basic systemic antifungal medications. Slightly less effective are topical treatments (ointments or creams that go directly on the affected area), though better ones are being developed.

There are folk remedies, too, that some people swear by while others scoff. Tea tree oil is a known antifungal that, when applied topically to the nail itself, is generally effective. (Itandamp;#8217;s one of the few andamp;#8220;home remediesandamp;#8221; that medical science can back up.) Grapefruit seed extract is also used, but its effectiveness has not been confirmed. Likewise, applying vinegar to the cuticle, a few drops a day for several weeks, may be helpful in some patients.

In general, the home remedies get the basic idea right: Pay attention to your nails! It is so much easier to prevent the condition than to treat it. Keep your feet clean and dry, donandamp;#8217;t wear tight or moist socks or shoes, and keep your nails trimmed and clean. <bio>Jane Symms has an interest in Candida.
The appearance of a pale nail will vary depending on the cause and severity of the problem. Nail paleness can be triggered by trauma to the nail or it may be caused by a disease. The scientific name for pale nail is leuconychia.

A pale nail is sometimes an indicator of a general health problem. For instance, people with chronic liver disease often show signs of pale nail. In the case of liver problems the total nail will be pale except for the top portion, which will retain its original pink color. The nails on the thumb and the index fingers are the most likely to be pale when there is liver disease present.

People with lymphoma, renal disease and fungal disease are also prone to pale nail. Diseases that reduce the quality of oxygen in the blood will often cause the nails to turn from pink to white. Thyroid diseases such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism may lead to the formation of nails that are pale and brittle. For more Info see http://www.treatnailfungus.org/overview/

Sometimes pail nail is the sign of poor nutrition. It is extremely important to eat a nutritious diet every day to help boost the immune system. Most physicians and holistic practitioners recommend reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing the amount of protein in the diet. It is important to eat a diet that contains several servings a day of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as whole grains. Sugar intake should be minimized as much as possible because sugar aggravates nail infections.

Some people find that their pale nail symptoms improve when they eat yogurt daily or take acidophilus capsules. Food supplements containing Vitamins B,C,D and E are also recommended as well as zinc.

Certain types of fungal infections can cause changes in the texture, color and shape of the nail. Certain types of bacteria can bring about changes in the color of the nail and cause painful areas under the nail. Psoriasis may cause splitting and paleness of the nail plate.

There is no treatment currently available to treat pale nail, but some people choose to wear polish in a darker color to hide the paleness. Since pale nail is often the cause of a more serious underlying medical condition it is important to consult your physician if you see dramatic changes in the color of your nails. <bio>You can also find more information athttp://www.treatnailfungus.org/treatment/new/Home-Remedies.htm on home remedies and http://www.treatnailfungus.org/treatment/homeopathic-for-toe-nail-fungus.ht= ml on homeopathic treatment. </bio>

Many people prefer a natural approach to treating toenail fungus because they do not want the unpleasant side effects that often accompany prescription medications. There are numerous natural products and home remedies from which to choose. Some of the natural ingredients used to cure nail fungus contain coconut oil, lavender oil and almond oil. Garlic and goldenseal also contain healing properties that help treat nail fungus.

Tea tree oil and oregano oil are two essential oils that have been used by some to treat nail fungus infections. These oils, which are applied topically, have a deep penetrating power that can reach into the nail bed and help kill the fungus.

Vinegar is another natural remedy used for nail fungus. The acidity in vinegar creates an environment in which a fungus cannot thrive. Either white vinegar or apple cider vinegar can be used as a soak or can be placed directly on the affected area. Some people take two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar twice a day to help prevent and cure nail fungus infections. Because the taste of apple cider vinegar can be offensive, many people mix it with fruit juice before they put it on the spoon.

Poor nutrition has been linked to a myriad of health problems, including nail fungus infections. A nutritious diet can give your immune system the boost it needs to fight off fungus infections. For more info see http://www.treatnailfungus.org/treatment/athletefootfungus8.html on athlete foot fungus.

Some people find that their symptoms improve when they eat yogurt daily or take acidophilus capsules. Food supplements containing Vitamins B,C, D and E are also recommended. Zinc is another important vitamin for the immune system. Be sure to monitor the amount you are taking because some vitamins can be toxic if they are ingested in excessive amounts.

Leucatin is a natural product that has shown to be very effective in treating nail fungus. This product is available in both topical and oral form and produces quick results in most cases. In fact, Leucatin is the number one choice of people who decide to cure their nail fungus naturally.

The topical form of Leucatin is especially formulated to penetrate through the nail and absorb into the skin around the nail and the nail bed. The Leucatin topical solution helps to thin out thickened nails and clear us the yellow color that is caused by the fungus. Leucatin is also available in oral form. <bio>See more information on http://www.treatnailfungus.org/overview/Epidemiology.htm on nail fungus infection and http://www.treatnailfungus.org/index2.html on fungus treatment. http://TreatNailFungus.org is a comprehensive resource to inform individuals suffering from toenail fungus. </bio>

Are you looking for a remedy for nail fungus? The truth is that many other people are looking for one too. Here's what you should know about nail fungi and finding the right remedies when you get infected.

The Horrors of Nail Fungus

You don't need to panic if you have a nail fungal infection. You won't die because of it. You should however act quickly. A nail fungi infection could look very harmless at the beginning. You could be suffering from nothing more than a white spot or two on your nail or a dull discoloration of your nail. Many people though suffer from more than just these preliminary symptoms. If you leave your nail untreated, it could begin to turn yellow. The nail could also thicken, become flaky and brittle and may start to smell.

It is when your nail changes color and appearance that you begin to be embarrassed. Not many people would want to sit beside someone who has a very ugly nail. The worst part is that you can't always hide your ugly nail. Using shoes, gloves or even just nail polish to hide your nail could result in better fungal growth. This is because fungi love warm and moist areas. By covering up, you are actually encouraging moisture retention and more warmth.

The Relief of a Good Remedy

The good news is that there are solutions to nail fungi infection. You do have to start early with the use of a remedy though. Nail fungal infections are best treated in their early stages. Fungi may not die at all if you start treatment too late. When this happens, you might just have to have your nail removed by a doctor.

One popular nail fungi treatment option is to take medication. There are a couple of good ones that your doctor may recommend. Like other forms of medication however, those used for nail fungus may result in some side effects. This is why many people would want to resort to a natural remedy for nail fungus.

Finding a Good Remedy

There are two major kinds of remedies for nail fungi. You can pick between a home remedy and a natural product. Home remedies are of course the cheaper option because you just have to use the ingredients that you have at home. The downside to natural remedies though is that there are so many different sources with different instructions for home remedies. There is simply no way you can tell which instructions, preparations and applications are the best to use. You would have to make a guess and experiment on a home remedy.

A natural product on the other hand may be a better choice for some. Although you may have to spend for it, you at least have the benefit of manufacturer standards. A reputable manufacturer would make sure that careful research and procedure standardization have been conducted before a product is released to the market.

If you notice symptoms of a nail fungal infection, you should begin treatment immediately. Regardless of whether you choose a home remedy for nail fungus or a natural product, early treatment is essential.<bio>Get rid of those ugly fungus under toe nail!
Vicks Vapor Rub is a product that is commonly known to fight colds and to help an individual to breathe easier. While there are no medical studies or findings to support theories, some nail fungus sufferers have reported success in using Vicks Vapor Rub for nail fungus. This medication is available at any supermarket or most retail stores and is fairly inexpensive. There is no prescription required; however it is recommended that an individual speak with his/her doctor prior to using Vicks Vapor Rub for nail fungus.

Individuals who have used Vicks Vapor Rub for nail fungus have reported applying it directly to the affected toenail area. Because this product is rumored to discolor the nail area, it is not typically used on fingernails. As with most medicines, it is important to keep this product away from the eyes and is for external use only. This is another reason that it is not commonly applied to the hands because, throughout the day, we eat with our hands, rub our eyes, etc. It is not clear how using Vicks Vapor Rub for nail fungus actually aids in removing the fungus, but some have reported success.

After applying Vicks Vapor Rub on the toenail, it may be a good idea to wear socks to bed in order to keep the medicine from rubbing off on the sheets. It is also a good idea to wear cotton socks because of the fabric's breathable nature and this will prevent the medication from rubbing off onto other surfaces during the day. It is important to note the frequently changing socks will help to prevent the toenail fungus from worsening.

While there have been individual reports of success with using Vicks Vapor Rub, it is not clear how accurate these findings are. Before applying any medication to the infected area, the sufferer must read all of the general use information and warning label, if any, on the product packaging.

If left untreated, nail fungus can be a very painful ailment and can also lead to more serious complications. The possibility of permanent nail damage and spreading the bacteria to other nails is always a concern with nail fungus. However, in some cases, a more serious infection may develop if nail fungus is not treated quickly and accurately. There are a number of rumored home remedies for nail fungus, with Vicks Vapor Rub being one of them. <bio>Vincent Abrugar is the webmaster of http://www.cure-nail-fungus.com a useful information website about nail fungus and nail fungus treatment. </bio>

Toenail fungi, the same bugs that cause athlete's foot, squeeze under toenails and hide. Foot sweat combines with the toe jam and toenail fungus to form a damp festering jelly which is an unstoppable force. This is a toenail-fungus patient memoir.

In fact, athlete's foot is one of the most common toenail fungus infections. Often, toenail fungus follows athlete's foot. Almost anyone who wears tight-fitting shoes or tight hosiery is more likely to develop toenail fungus, especially if they also practice poor foot hygiene. Use different towels to dry off the infected skin area. For athlete's foot and toenail fungus, keep your feet and shoes aired and dry. This will reduce your risk for getting athlete's foot, toenail fungus, bacteria or warts, but it isn't foolproof.

Foot surgery should always be a last resort for fungus toenails, but if needed, it is absolutely done right in the podiatrist's office. For further information or to schedule an appointment to evaluate and treat toenail fungus, consult with your dermatologist.

The medicines used to treat athlete's foot are normally totally ineffective against fungus toenails infections. The drug is used in the United States to treat toenail fungus, and several kinds of thrush as well as cryptococcal meningitis. Treat athlete foot regularly as it can progressively lead to a condition of toenail fungus.

To treat toenail fungus apply tea tree oil to all areas of the toenail and toe that are affected by the fungus. Due to the well known fact that it is difficult to treat or eradicate toenail fungus, it is a good idea to try to prevent it. Fungal infections can affect the fingernails as well as the toenails, but toenail fungus is more difficult to treat because toenails grow more slowly.

Fortunately for all of us now, toenail fungus is a relatively easy to treat condition. Most of the medication for nail fungus on the market is excellent for home use, and nail fungus can be treated in the privacy of your own home!
Prevention has always been the best remedy for any kind of ailment or infection. The same goes with nail fungus especially since it takes a long time for nail fungus to be removed. Curing it as soon as symptoms appear will prevent the infection of your other nails therefore saving you of unnecessary pain and trouble.

Nail fungus can infect anybody. Excessive sweating on your feet and hands, defects in the nails and people with reduced immune system are susceptible to nail fungus infections. However, it does not mean that you have an immune system problem if you develop a nail fungus infection. Moreover, it is contagious and should be treated as soon as it appears. But do not fret, nail fungal infections are treatable.

Here are some preventive measures you can do to avoid getting nail fungus:

1. Wear protective shoes or slippers when you use public facilities such as gym showers, locker rooms and swimming pools. A lot of people use these facilities and you never know if someone infected has just used the shower stall you are using. Remember nail fungus is contagious.

2. Keep your nails clean, short and dry. Trim your nails regularly and in a straight line. Dry your hands and feet thoroughly after bathing especially in between your fingers and toes. Fungi growth occurs mostly on damp areas.

3. Use anti-fungal sprays and powders in your shoes or on your feet to eliminate any fungus that might be present. Avoid using the same shoes everyday to give it time to air dry especially if you sweat a lot. Same goes with your socks. If you sweat excessively change your socks and alternate between open toed sandals and closed shoes.

4. Wash your feet regularly and dry them well. Ditch the nail polish to cover up an existing fungal infection. It may look nice but it can trap the moisture and fungus in your nails and make it worse.

5. Go to a reputable pedicure and manicure salon. Make sure that they sterilize their instruments after every customer. Or you can bring your own just make sure you sterilize them as well even if you are the only one using it. It will keep fungal growth at bay.

6. Wash your hands after touching or putting medication on an infected nail. It can infect the other nails on your hands.

7. Don't pick at the skin around your nails or pluck "hangnails" off of them. This might cause the skin to break and give access to germs and fungi.

8. See a doctor at the first symptoms of nail fungal infection. The earlier it is treated the better it is for you.

9. Eat a well balanced diet to keep your immune system healthy. It will help you fight bacteria, viruses and germs that can cause nail fungus.

As the old saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth an ounce of cure." This holds true with nail fungus. It is always wise to stick to some precaution that will bring you relief from nail fungus infection. <bio>Author is the webmaster of http://www.toe-nails-fungus.com and http://www.squidoo.com/risk-factors-complications-nail-fungus. </bio>

Nail fungus is something most people know very little about. We may see a few different advertisements or commercials about nail fungus treatment and prevention, but we really do not know what nail fungus actually is. Nail fungus is a fungal infection of the nail also known as onychomycosis in the medial world.

Studies show that while nail fungus is a common occurrence, it will typically infect the toenails. Very seldom will nail fungus attack the fingernails. Further studies show that approximately twelve percent of the U.S. population has some sort of nail fungus and it is typical with age. People aged 40 and older are the most susceptible to nail fungus. Like many other forms of affliction, nail fungus is hereditary; it seems to run in families. Some others may be more susceptible to nail fungus as well such as those who have a suppressed immune system due to certain diseases or treatments. People who have been diagnosed with AIDS, have received transplants, are undergoing cancer treatments are at risk.

In order to determine if you have nail fungus, you must make an appointment with a dermatologist. They will scrape your infected nail and submit it for microscopic examination. The nail will be carefully examined with a microscope and, occasionally, cultured, to determine what type of fungus is growing in the nail. Your dermatologist will determine if you have nail fungus and which type you have. Dermatophytes are nail fungus found in the toenails. Yeast is the type of nail fungus found in the fingernails.

If your dermatologist has diagnosed either type of nail fungus, he or she will prescribe one of many varieties of treatments available to combat the infection. In treatment of nail fungus, there are prescriptions such as gels, creams, and lotions that may be affective in treating mild cases of nail fungus. For particularly harsh cases, your dermatologist may prescribe oral medication to clear the problem. In extreme cases, the doctor may remove the nail, either the section that is infected or the entire nail to assist in treatment of the nail fungus.

The good news about nail fungus is, if you do get it, it can be treated fairly quickly. There are also steps you can take to avoid getting the infection or avoid getting it again. Talk to your dermatologist, he or she will provide you with the necessary information you need about nail fungus and how you can prevent it. <bio>This article is Copyright © 2006, Heather Colman.
WHAT IS NAIL FUNGUS?

An infection of nail fungus can occur when fungi infect one or more of your nails. A nail fungal infection may begin as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. As the nail fungus spreads deeper into your nail, it may cause your nail to discolor, thicken and develop crumbling edges =97 an unsightly and potentially painful problem.

NAIL FUNGUS SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

You may have a nail fungal infection =97 (also called onychomycosis) =97 if one or more of your nails are:

* Thickened * Brittle, crumbly or ragged * Distorted in shape * Dull, with no luster or shine * A dark color, caused by debris building up under your nail

CAUSES

Fungi are microscopic organisms that don't need sunlight to survive. Some fungi have beneficial uses, while others cause illness and infection.

Nail fungal infections are typically caused by a fungus that belongs to a group of fungi called dermatophytes. But yeasts and molds also can be responsible for nail fungal infections.

RISK FACTORS

Nail fungus is more common among older adults for several reasons, including diminished blood circulation, more years of exposure to fungi and because nails may grow more slowly and thicken with aging, making them more susceptible to infection. Nail fungus also tends to affect men more than women and those with a family history of this infection. Resistance to fungal infection likely has a genetic component.

COMPLICATIONS

Nail fungal infections can be painful and may cause permanent damage to your nails. They may also lead to other serious infections that can spread beyond your feet if you have a suppressed immune system due to medication, diabetes or other conditions.

TREATMENT

Nail fungus can be difficult to treat, and repeated infections are common. Over-the-counter antifungal nail creams and ointments are available, but they aren't very effective.

Oral medications To treat nail fungus, your doctor may prescribe an oral antifungal medication, such as:

* Itraconazole (Sporanox) * Fluconazole (Diflucan) * Terbinafine (Lamisil)

These medications help a new nail grow free of infection, slowly replacing the infected portion of your nail. You typically take these medications for six to 12 weeks but won't see the end result of treatment until the nail grows back completely. It may take four months or longer to eliminate an infection. Recurrent infections are possible, especially if you continue to expose your nails to warm, moist conditions.

Antifungal drugs may also cause side effects ranging from skin rashes to liver damage. Doctors may not recommend them for people with liver disease or congestive heart failure or for those taking certain medications.

PREVENTION

To help prevent nail fungus and reduce recurrent infections, practice good hand and foot hygiene by following these steps:

* Keep your nails short, dry and clean. Trim nails straight across and file down thickened areas. Thoroughly dry your hands and feet, including between your toes, after bathing.

* Wear appropriate socks. Synthetic socks that wick away moisture may keep your feet dryer than do cotton or wool socks (you can also wear synthetic socks underneath other socks). Change them often, especially if your feet sweat excessively. Take your shoes off occasionally during the day and after exercise. Alternate closed-toe shoes with open-toed shoes.

* Use an antifungal spray or powder. Spray or sprinkle your feet and the insides of your shoes.

* Wear rubber gloves. This protects your hands from overexposure to water. Between uses, turn the rubber gloves inside out to dry.

* Don't trim or pick at the skin around your nails. This may give germs access to your skin and nails.

* Don't go barefoot in public places. Wear shoes around public pools, showers and locker rooms.

* Choose a reputable manicure and pedicure salon. Make sure the salon sterilizes its instruments. Better yet, bring your own.

* Give up nail polish and artificial nails. Although it may be tempting to hide nail fungal infections under a coat of pretty pink polish, this can trap unwanted moisture and worsen the infection.

* Wash your hands after touching an infected nail. Nail fungus can spread from nail to nail.

NAIL FUNGUS SELF-CARE

Sometimes, people turn to traditional home made remedies because current treatments can take a long time to work and aren't always effective . There are two remedies that have proved to help nail fungus infections : vinegar and Vicks VapoRub. <bio>If you want to know more about our natural remedy to get rid of nail fungus, please click here: http://nail-fungus--cure.blogspot.com/ </bio>

Many medications today, both prescribed and over the counter, carry a risk of dangerous side effects and can be very expensive. For reasons of both safety and budgeting, many individuals are forced to find a natural cure for whatever ails. Nail fungus is an infection that occurs with many individuals, some of whom are always searching for a natural cure.

Nail fungus occurs in two areas, including the toenail or fingernail. The best way to provide a natural cure for nail fungus is to keep the area clean. Bacteria worsen if the area isn't properly cleaned, which is especially true with nail fungus. In addition, the area should stay dry and cool. This can be achieved by always drying the hands thoroughly or the feet after bathing or swimming. Hands will naturally stay cooler than feet, which is why anyone suffering from toenail fungus should consider wearing cotton socks. Cotton, itself, is a very breathable fabric and absorbs sweat effectively. These are great examples of a natural cure for nail fungal infections.

If nail fungus is infecting the toenail area, avoid wearing shoes whenever possible. For example, sufferers should not wear them around the home or needlessly. In addition, house slippers may increase warmth on the feet and should be avoided if possible. Cotton socks will help to ease the discomfort better than other footwear. Once nail fungus is already present, it is clearly too late to prevent the infection. However, frequently changing socks and shoes will help to keep the foot clean and free of additional bacteria that may aggravate the condition.

When searching for a natural cure for nail fungus, many sufferers overlook the type of soap that they are using. An anti-bacterial soap will often be more beneficial in clearing up nail fungus than a regular, or moisturizing, soap. A product that is specifically designed to fight bacteria would have the potential to be a better natural cure.

Vinegar, a product commonly found in any supermarket, is another natural cure for nail fungus that is often recommended among sufferers. Some individuals apply this product to the site of the infection on two or more times each day. Many retail products are said to work in much the same way and often are able to fight the infection more aggressively. However, vinegar is a natural product that is often reported by sufferers as a part of a natural cure for nail fungus. <bio>Vincent Abrugar is the webmaster of http://www.cure-nail-fungus.com a useful information website about nail fungus and nail fungus treatment. </bio>

Nail fungus is an embarrassing dilemma which causes humiliating experiences and restriction of wearing open-toed sandals. It is not easy to treat when the fungus is quite hard to reach.

Some people don't realize that they have toe fungus. So how do you exactly know? Here are some symptoms: yellowing of toenails, thickening, and painful separation from the nail bed. Now you know that you have nail fungus, here are five nail fungus treatments which can help you get rid of that horrific problem.

The first treatment is to apply an anti-fungal cream religiously for at least 6 months to ensure that the nail fungus doesn't come back. Most anti-fungal creams are available over the counter and are reasonably priced. Creams are applied directly to the nail and can be used for mild and moderate nail fungus infections. Make sure to read the contents of the creams before buying and follow the instructions carefully to prevent further damage. Make sure to clean your hands and feet before applying anti-fungal creams to prevent more bacteria from spreading.

Second treatment is to orally take medication. Prescription pills are one of the best choices for treatment. However, when taking prescription pills one must monitor the effectiveness since it can cause some dangerous side effects. Liver and kidney functions are most likely to be affected and the heart's ability to contract is also a factor to be considered. Always ask for a prescription from a legitimate doctor to prevent more problems. You can ask them regarding the side effects and what can be done to avert it. If you are still worried about the risks, creams are the best option for you.

Third treatment is a non-surgical nail removal. For this treatment, a cream is used to soften and dissolve the nail which will remove the infected tissue. An anti-fungal cream will be applied once the infected nail is removed. Non-surgical nail removal is a rare procedure but nonetheless painless.

Fourth treatment is a surgical nail removal. This procedure is done if you have a severe or recurring nail fungus infection. Just like the process for non-surgical removal, an anti-fungal cream will also be applied directly once the infected nail is removed.

Fifth treatment is to apply soothing oils that will move down under the nails and reach down to the roots of the fungus. Oils have other purposes which come in handy while you treat your nail fungus. It helps in smoothing and softening your nails during each application and it also penetrates the nail when applied on top of it for protection. Soothing oils must be applied day and night to further improve the chances of nail fungus infection treatment. It also helps to apply oil to other nails with no nail fungus infection to prevent the spread of the nail fungus to the other nails.

Last but not the least, ask for a professional doctor's advice. Creams and treatments can only do so much. Getting advice from a professional will help prevent further infection caused by wrong treatments. <bio>Author is the webmaster of http://www.toe-nails-fungus.com and http://www.squidoo.com/nail-fungus-treatments. </bio>

In my own opinion the nails on the fingers as well as on the toes actually reflect how hygienic a person is. It shows just how concerned a particular person is when it comes to cleanliness. With the busy schedules most women may be leading, it is common for most to neglect having their nails get the regular manicure and pedicure. You can actually have to die for nails at a fraction of the price and in the comfort of your own home with this nail care guide.

If you want to clean your nails it is best to remove and wipe off any nail polish that may be remaining on your nails. Soak a cotton ball with a nail polish remover or acetone and apply on nails.

Long nails are great to look at but nails of just the right length would be ideal. Cut and trim your nails with a nail cutter based on your desired length. Toe nails though are better if they are snipped short.

The nail cutter does not all the time give straight cuts so refine your nail's cut with the use of either a nail file or emery board whichever one you have. It is best to file in one direction instead of going back and forth which have the tendency to cause your nail to break. The direction of filing should be from the outside towards the center. A square cut that is somewhat oval in shape as well is ideal to avoid ingrown nails which can be very painful.

To remove unwanted cuticle, rub a solution of cuticle remover and gently push it with a pusher. If you know how to use a nipper, you can slowly cut them as well but you have to be extra careful because an incorrect way may cause infections. It is best to have your cuticles cut by a professional. Soaking your fingers and toes with the cuticle remover in warm water helps speed up the softening of your cuticles.

Before any color application a base coat is important to help protect your nails as well as prevent it from absorbing the color. Before applying nail color rub the bottle between your palms to prevent clumps. Apply a first coat allow to dry before doing another coat. Prevent smudges by applying nail color in a single direction. A topcoat is then applied to help maintain the shine as well as prevent chipping. <bio>Daniel Smith writes about http://www.diydealsdiscounts.com/ </bio>

You have tried everything on your nail fungus: OTC antifungal ointments and creams, Penlac, Vicks Vaporub, Listerine, tea tree oil, vinegar. You have used them individually and in combinations as recommended by friends, all to no avail. You have other recourse but to try oral medication.

Nail fungus is scientifically known as onychomycosis. It is caused by a type of fungus known as dermatophyte which invades the nails through a break in the skin. The fungus feeds on keratin, the main component of the hard shell or the nail plate.

Nail Fungal infection is often tough to treat because the nail plate inadvertently harbors and protects the infecting agent. For this reason, it is sometimes recommended to treat the disease from within using oral prescription medication. As with most prescription drugs, doctors order lab tests on the diseased nail either through fungal culture, KOH preparation or nail biopsy in order to determine the type of infection. From there, the doctors will determine the appropriate course of treatment.

1. Sporanox (Itraconazole)

Sporanox is a capsule administered to patients suffering from different fungal infections including onychomychosis of the toenails and fingernails. It is usually taken by patients for at least 3 months although the effect may be seen in as much as 9 months up to a whole year.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a pubic advisory on the potential danger of Sporanox to overall health. It has been found to have contraindications on people with congestive heart failure or CHF as well as with liver malfunction. Thus, physicians order several laboratory tests and conduct research on a person's medical history prior to prescribing the drug.

2. Lamisil (Terbinafine)

Lamisil is the most doctor prescribed medication for nail fungal infection. It is in tablet form and Lamisil has about the same success rate as that of Sporanox although costs relatively less. It is usually taken for 6 weeks by patients with fingernail infections or for 3 months for patients with toenail infections.

The FDA issued an advisory on the potential danger of Lamisil tablets on liver health. Thus, prior to issuing prescriptions and 6 weeks into the course of treatment, administering physicians require their patients to take liver functions tests to ensure safety.

There is also a topical variety of Lamisil which can be used in conjunction with the oral treatment for faster result. Lamisil topical treatment is excluded from the FDA's advisory concerning Lamisil's adverse effect on liver health.

3. Diflucan (Fluconazole)

Diflucan is an antifungal drug primarily prescribed for treatment of infections due to candida such as vaginal, esophageal and oropharyngeal, as well as for cryptococcal meningitis. The FDA has not yet approved its use for nail fungus treatment although a study shows that it performed significantly more effective compared to placebo treatment of the disease. It is administered in mild to moderate infections for a duration of 3 to 6 months, and in moderate to severe infections for a duration of 6 to 9 months.

Diflucan is also potentially harmful to liver health. Thus patients are advised by their doctors to take a liver functions test prior to taking the medication. There have also been reported rare cases of anaphylaxis and skin rashes in patients who have taken the drug.<bio>For more information, kindly visit Nail Fungus Treatment.
