America is often defined by Times Square. After all, this is the famous location of the dropping of the ball on New Year's Eve. With such a famous designation, it's only reasonable that Americans would want their country to be represented by something decent. Not as it was for years, a seedy, littered, crime-ridden district.

Times Square, New York at one time was littered with sex clubs and porn shops. One of the most notorious establishments in Times Square could be considered the Gaiety Theatre. This was a male strip club that operated in Times Square for more than thirty years. When they officially closed their doors recently, the Disneyfication of Times Square was considered to be nearly complete.

The decline of Times Square began with the Great Depression, however the original opening of The Gaiety Theatre ushered in hustlers, tourists and individuals of the gay variety. With them, sex clubs opened up and porn movies became popular in this section of New York. Once these establishments took hold in Times Square, the crime rate skyrocketed and people began to avoid this area. After a bit, it began to be considered one of the seedier places to be in New York.

This was presenting a very bad image for New York. With the newly formed Giuliani administration, they swooped in and began enforcing laws that encouraged a higher quality of life for people. By doing this they were able to begin shutting down many of the sex themed establishments. They worked to drive out the people who encouraged sex solicitation and shops. The only drawback was that in people's minds, it still had a reputation of being a place to avoid. So the biggest hurdle New York had was to show the world that Times Square had indeed changed for the better. Police worked to clean up the streets and brought the crime rate down dramatically.

It wasn't until the Amsterdam Theatre was closed and transformed into the Disney Theatre that Times Square began to share the Disney name synonymously, then people started to associate Times Square with the "family oriented theme park" kind of mentality. With that association they began to feel that Times Square would also be subject to the Disney type of regulations as they have in their parks.

With the gradual closings of the gay clubs, porn shops and sex establishments, Time Square began to build up a more wholesome image but it took time. These shops weren't eliminated immediately, it took time and a lot of effort on the parts of many individuals. The upgrading of Times Square was considered a complete success once the last remaining establishment that had such a stronghold on this New York crossroads was officially closed. <bio>Johnny Moon recommends using http://www.NewYorkHotelDeals.us for all of your NYC hotel reservation needs. </bio>

Times Square, one of New York City's premier tourist destinations, is located on a major intersection in Midtown Manhattan--at the junction of Broadway and 27th Street and from West 42nd Street to West 47th Street. It occupies the blocks between 6th and 8th Avenues from east to west, and West 40th and West 53rd Streets from north to south. Times Square was "christened" in 1904; not coincidentally, so were neon lights and the city's first subway line. New Yorkers wasted no time in starting the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration tradition: they began ringing in the new year at Times Square in 1904 as well.

Previously, the area that has been called "Times Square" for over 100 years was known as The Longacre. On April 8, 1904, the name was changed to Times Square to commemorate the official opening of the brand new New York Times Building located on the triangle of land at the intersection of Broadway, 42nd Street, and 7th Avenue. The building was the tallest in Manhattan at the time. In 1913, the New York Times moved to a larger facility across Broadway and the New York Times Building was renamed the Allied Chemical Building. Today, it is known simply as One Times Square.

During the First World War, Broadway became known as one of the world's premier theatre districts. The Great Depression hit New York City hard, and many theatres had to close or offer less discriminating fare to attract more theatre-goers. Thus began a slow decline that reached its lowest point in the 1960s and 1970s. At this time, Times Square had become (in)famous for erotic bookstores, live nude shows, X-rated movies, and other adult fare. By 1975, many people considered Times Square to be the epitome of urban and moral decay.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, city and state officials began serious efforts to reverse the decline of Times Square. Today, Times Square has been restored to its former glory and boasts over 27,000 residents and over 26 million visitors each year, and makes a serious contribution to New York City's economy=97the annual total output is comparable to the economies of Bolivia and Panama, and far exceeds that of small countries.

New Year's Eve at Times Square is now a global tradition. Approximately 1 million people gather there each year; additionally, millions across the United States and about 1 billion people all over the world tune into the New Year's Eve celebration. The famous ball (currently made of Waterford Crystal) drops from One Times Square, a tradition that began on December 31, 1907 and has continued ever since, except during World War Two when a moment of silence was observed followed by the tolling of church bells, as the blackout restrictions prevented excessive New Year's Eve festivities.

Times Square has cemented its place in American popular culture. It has been featured in movies such as Vanilla Sky, King Kong, and Spider-Man. ABC's Good Morning America and MTV's Total Request Live are broadcast live from their studios at Times Square. Additionally, many exclusive, popular, and specialty retailers and restaurants have locations at Times Square, such as the Hard Rock Caf=E9, Virgin Records, Toys R Us, ESPN Zone, Sketchers, Planet Hollywood, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, Ruby Foo's, and Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. Today's Times Square is a perfect family destination. <bio>Johnny Moon recommends http://www.NewYorkHotelDeals.us for all of your NYC hotel reservation needs. </bio>

New York, New York -- so good they named it twice -- is one of the most fascinating, exciting and cultural cities in the world. Within the 20 square miles that comprise Manhattan can be found some of the world's greatest museums, shops and restaurants, as well as a spectacular skyline that's known the world over.

You could spend a lifetime in New York without experiencing everything fully. Some of the sights that any first time visitor to New York must see include the Empire State Building - for many years the world's tallest building - the immigration museum at Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and the United Nations Building.

One of the joys of visiting the city is simply to wander through the different and varied neighborhoods -- Greenwich Village, Chinatown, the Theater District, Harlem and Little Italy. The outlying borough of Brooklyn has several attractions including the botanical gardens and the famous amusement park at Coney Island.

One of the biggest attractions is the city's diversity - in New York you can hear virtually any language spoken and dine in a different ethnic restaurant every night for a month. Apart from Manhattan, the borough of Queens is also well known for its wide selection of foreign restaurants.

Shopping in New York is equally satisfying, offering world class department stores with such famous names as Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdales. At the other end of the shopping spectrum are street markets, designer boutiques and specialty stores.

New York has some of the greatest museums in the world -- several conveniently located together at the edge of Central Park. The Metropolitan Museum of Art attracts more visitors than any other place in the city and offers everything from Egyptian mummies to 20th century masterpieces.

On the other hand the city has over 50 smaller but fascinating museums dedicated to such diverse subjects as firefighting, tenement living and the history of finance. Children are not forgotten -- there are several museums aimed at children as well as the ever popular Bronx Zoo with its more than 4,000 animals.

Since the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001, one of New York's biggest attractions has been the remains of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. More than a tourist attraction, to many it's a site of pilgrimage and a poignant reminder of the events of that day. <bio>Sharon Stajda loves to travel and write about it.
The New York area is one of the largest in the world. With approximately 8 million people being in New York City alone and with less than 900 thousand kilometers squared radius, it is the densest city in all of North America! After a long anticipated debut we finally made our way to the Big Apple, and we were so excited we could barely contain ourselves. Going there has been a childhood dream for us ever since we decided to be world travelers and see everything this globe has to offer!

The people, lights, Times Square, Rockefeller, everything seems so exciting! This poised a big question though... What to do? What New York City event to pick? Well, I want to share with you some tips on New York travel that won't break the bank! These are all an incredible experience and I would suggest doing them all if you can. Keep in mind there is no shortage of things to do in New York City. You'll never get the chance to do everything, so do what you can, relax and enjoy what this wonderful city has to offer!

1) New York City comedy clubs: This is maybe the best thing I can suggest if you enjoy any sort of comedy at all. It works out really well because they have salesperson on the streets in the middle of Times Square, you don't even have to look or try to find tickets. They will literally just flag you down and give you a very good price (We only paid $20 for both of us) on the condition that you buy 2 beverages at the club. The nice thing about their special, for those who don't drink alcohol you can buy any drink of choice. Soft drinks and water were accepted as well so it really can appeal to everyone who enjoys this sort of thing and the cost is very low for the reward. It really was such a great time, the comedians were fantastic and we were very glad we decided to go. Highly Recommended!

2) Times Square: I realize this must be on everyone's "top of the list" but it really is an amazing sight to see. This experience is something that you will never forget. The lights, people, banners, you don't even realize how crazy it is until you are there. I must have seen Times Square on television a million times but honestly it really just is not the same. Spend a little time there to take in the atmosphere. There are plenty of very nice places to eat but the prices on their novelty restaurants (Hard Rock Café, ESPN Zone, etc) are very expensive. If you want something for a very good price, check out the side streets and look for the local pubs. I would really recommend going at night to see it lit up. A note to those who absolutely hate crowds of people, if you go to Times Square don't go on a Friday or Saturday evening when it is the most busiest. We went on both a Saturday and Sunday night... the Saturday was chaos, and the Sunday was very nice and calm in comparison :) All the same, I really enjoyed both of them in different ways.

3) Rockefeller Center: We had the pleasure of going during December month, so we got to experience the Christmas tree and Skating Rink all done up at Rockefeller center. This is also home of the famous NBC Studios (Costs $18.50 for the tour).

4) Central Park: One of the most famous parks in the world and the most visited park in the United States, Central Park is a wonderful place to go on a nice day. Central Park is actually bigger than 2 of the world's smallest nations; Monaco and Vatican City.

5) See a local New York City Event: Take in a ball game, a musical, or something at the theatre! New York really has everything to offer no matter what your hobbies or interests are! You can usually find something very reasonably priced as well, depending on what you are after.

I realize as most people do, New York tends to be quite expensive but with these travel ideas you can go out and have a really great time and still not spend too much money. There is plenty to see, even just going to see the landmarks and places like Rockefeller, Central Park and Times Square are well worthwhile! I really enjoyed my time just walking the streets and taking in the atmosphere.

If you are planning to stay in Manhattan for a week or so, I would really suggest picking up a copy of "The New York Pass", spend your week and do everything you can. These passes are actually very reasonably priced (Starting at $55.00 daily and only $139.99 for a 7 day period, per person) and you get FREE access to literally almost EVERYTHING you could want in New York City. Here is just a glimpse of what is here. Keep in mind these are only about a quarter of the free things you get, not even including the other discounted items and special offers.

* Central Park Zoo * CNN Studio Tour * Empire State Building * Madison Square Garden All Access Tour * NBC Studio Tour * New York Aquarium * New York Botanical Garden * Radio City Music Hall Stage Door Tour * Rockefeller Center Tour * Statue of Liberty / Ellis Island Ferry * Suede Lounge (VIP nightclub access) * The United Nations Tour

Well worth the money if you plan to do a lot of sightseeing, Museums and Tours.

Here's a link to the page directly for those who are interested: http://www.tropicalbeachdestinations.com/NewYorkPass.php

I absolutely loved my time in New York! I found it really offers you so much, no matter what month, or what day, there is always something for you to do that is interesting. How can you not like that about a city? It has everything and it is a great place to visit. I hope these tips on New York travel were helpful! I know I can't wait for our next adventure, here in the Big Apple!

Until next time, Best Wishes and Happy Travels! <bio>At Tropical Beach Destinations we share the secrets of http://www.tropicalbeachdestinations.com that your travel agents wish they knew.
New York Knicks tickets were always nearly impossible to find for many reasons. They play at one of the most famous venues in the world in Madison Square Garden. The culture of New York City exudes basketball. The stars would love to be seen at a Knicks game. Oh, and one final thing - the Knicks were almost always good.

Of course, last year was one of the biggest disasters in the history of the entire NBA, let alone just the Knicks. Coach Larry Brown failed miserably in his attempt to mold what many felt was a misfit roster into winners, and the team tanked badly. Brown did not get along with his players or with management, and he was sent packing after only one season.

This led to what basically amounted to an ultimatum from owner James Dolan. He installed Isiah Thomas as coach, and told him he had a year to turn things around or he'd be joining Brown in the unemployment line. Of course, no one thought he'd actually improve the team, and no one gave this team a chance at the beginning of the season.

However, surprisingly, the Knicks are getting better. Their bloated payroll doesn't look so ridiculous these days, and against all odds and the predictions of almost everyone who claimed to know anything about basketball, the Knicks are fighting for a playoff spot and New York Knicks tickets are once again becoming a hot item.

The reasons for this resurgence can actually be laid out pretty easily. No one ever doubted that the Knicks' roster was talented, but the players were portrayed as a bunch of overpaid, underachieving coach-killers who didn't know how to function as a team. After all, if a great coach like Brown couldn't get them to play together, no one could.

Thomas changed all of that. He tinkered with the lineup, is getting production out of C Eddy Curry, a supremely talented player, and the one thing that's most different from last year's Knicks is that this year, New York plays hard every single night. How many times have we seen their games come down to the last shot? Last year, those games would've been blowouts.

Whatever Thomas is telling them, the message is apparently getting through. This section of New York City includes the area between 14th Street and 59th Street from the East River to the Hudson River; the "heart" of Midtown is from 31st Street to 59th Street between Third and Ninth Avenues.

Manhattan was originally settled by the Lenape. In 1624, a permanent European presence settled on the island; one of the Dutch East India Company's explorers, Henry Hudson, was the first to successfully map the region. The land was named Fort Amsterdam and the natives sold it for $24; 1625 is now recognized as the birth date of New York City. The British conquered the settlement in 1664 and renamed it "New York" after the English Duke of York. From January 11, 1785 to the Fall of 1788, New York City was one of the capitals of the country under the Articles of Confederation; New York was America's fist capital city under our Declaration of Independence.

The nineteenth century population explosion made Midtown Manhattan the center of commerce for the entire area. During the Great Depression and between the World Wars, Midtown saw a lot of art deco buildings erected, in particular, the Empire State Building, which was the tallest building in the world at that time. Today, it is the tallest building in New York after the demise of the World Trade Centers, and the second tallest building in the country.

Today's Midtown includes a variety of vibrant, eclectic neighborhoods: Gramercy, a relatively quiet area; Hell's Kitchen, which figured prominently in New York City's organized crime; Chelsea, a very gay-friendly area and a center of art and night life; Murray Hill, formerly a stiff and professional area, recently becoming a nightlife haven; Turtle Bay, where the UN Headquarters is located; Rockefeller Center, site of the famous Christmas tree, the Theatre District, famous for the many Broadway theatres in the area; the Meatpacking District, once an undesirable location is now one of the hottest nightclub spots in Manhattan; Koreatown, affectionately called "K-Town" by the locals; Times Square is one of the busiest tourist destinations in the entire world; the Garment District, the center for fashion design and manufacturing; and Herald Square, a hub for retail shopping.

Most of the famous New York City tourist attractions are located in Midtown Manhattan: The Museum of Modern Art, or the MoMA, is one of the foremost museums of modern art in the world.

The largest gothic-style Catholic Church in the United States is St. Patrick's Cathedral, located on Madison Avenue. Nearby is high-end retailer Saks Fifth Avenue's flagship store. Legendary concerts and sporting events happen nightly at Madison Square Garden. The New York Public Library, one of the world's best research institutions, has various locations throughout Midtown. Midtown Manhattan is absolutely packed with restaurants, bars, and just about anything for individuals of all ages.

Midtown Manhattan is a bustling metropolis for both tourists and locals. It's easy to navigate and you're never far from a museum, world-class shopping and dining, or family attractions.

Midtown offers a colorful, vibrant slice of New York life that you can't afford to miss. <bio>Johnny Moon is a contributer to http://www.NewYorkHotelDeals.us/blog - a NYC travel guide. </bio>

As the most populated city in the country, New York is a hub for people from various walks of life -- people who can be polite and don't mind getting to know each other.

New Yorkers are an interesting lot. Because of their focus on their careers, they tend to be thought of as power-hungry or very ambitious. In truth, they fear loneliness, and so they turn to bar hopping to meet singles like them. Being a New Yorker means that your career comes first, though in reality, the people are looking for that special someone who they can share their life with. They're not a snobbish people -- they just find it harder to commit.

New York has a corner for everyone. There are arcades, bowling alleys, and pool halls for fun dating. Colleges for intellectual pursuits, gyms for those who want to experience physical fitness together, parks for romantic walks, and spoken word lounges for the intellectual and spiritual type.

For specific spots, Mars 2112 is the place for a fun date. For something more formal, the Water Club and Manhattan Grille are sound choices, and for formal Italian, Brunelli's the place to go. If you just want to sit down and have a nice leisurely date, go to Central Park or Washington Square Park. Bars are not that romantic, though clubs with good music are nice. There's the Midtown, the Lower East Side, The Knitting Factory, and Tribeca. If it's the classical arts your date craves, bring him/her to the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. And for a really interesting afternoon, drop by Union Square -- bookstores, costume stores, and music stores galore.

If you can't afford an expensive date, take her on a ride on the Staten Island Ferry at sunset. Feel the sun's rays and the wind's touch, and enjoy the beauty around you. <bio>Ron Zvagelsky has a degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California.
One of the must see places to visit while in New York City is the Broadway district, located in Manhattan. Broadway is great if you are on a New York City walking tour, because there is so much to see on this very long avenue that runs from north to south. While Broadway is most famous for its shows, you will see some wonderfully designed old buildings, restaurants of every stripe, landmarks and lots of shops.

The famous Flatiron Building sits regally at the intersection of Broadway, Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street. Built at the turn of the last century, it is a wedge-shaped 21-story office building that still attracts curious visitors. Officially called the Fuller Building, after George A. Fuller financed its construction, it was nicknamed the Flatiron Building because the shape of the foundation looked like a flatiron.

It is rumored to have helped coin the popular 1920s slang phase "23 Skidoo" (meaning get out of here) when men would gather at the building on a windy day to watch ladies skirts fly up in a gust of wind. The officers would shoo the guys away uttering "23 Skidoo".

As you walk further up Broadway, you'll spot one of the world's most celebrated buildings =96 The Woolworth Building, located at 233 Broadway. The Building was commissioned by the wealthy merchant, Franklin Woolworth, founder of the F. W. Woolworth Company. Franklin Woolworth pioneered the concept of discount stores and got wealthy enough to pay over thirteen million dollars in cash for the building that bears his name. The Woolworth Building opened in 1913 and is a National Historic Landmark.

A short ten minute walk north will bring you to the famous Times Square =96 one of the most recognizable areas in the world. Your heart will skip a beat as you stand there at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. Not only is this the famous theatre district, but you will be dazzled by the hustle and bustle of people, taxis, and so much to see and do. So, stand there a moment and take it all in.

If you are into people watching, this is the place to be. Sit down at a restaurant table, and watch all the interesting people walk by as you eat a nice meal. A famous place you might want to try out is The Rainbow Room, located just north of Times Square at Rockefeller Center. If you're in the mood for something sweet, Lindy's deli is known to have some awesome New York style cheesecake.

If you get to Times Square early enough in the morning, you can stand outside the NBC Studios and wave to your family and friends as they tape their morning program. The younger crowd may enjoy a visit to the MTV studio, also located in this area.

A lot of people come to Times Square to see a theatre show and this is where you buy tickets. Savvy theatre goers with extra time on their hands can be found at the TKTS (Tee-Kay Tee-Ess) booth waiting in line for discount theatre tickets. There are two locations in the city. The Broadway booth is located at 45th and 47th streets. While there's no guarantee of getting a ticket, you can buy tickets here for 25-50% off regular price.

After visiting shops for souvenirs, you might just pass by the Naked Cowboy (he performs in his underwear) strumming on his red, white and blue guitar and singing one of his original songs. Street performing or busking, is a long tradition in New York City. It certainly adds to the colorful atmosphere.

Continuting on your walking tour, you will reach Columbus Circle, which intersects Broadway, Central Park West and Central Park South. This is the first traffic circle ever built in the U.S. If you are a music and ballet lover, you'll want to see the Lincoln Center, home to the Joffrey and American Ballet troupes, and hosts to many orchestras and special cultural events.

Exploring Broadway Avenue will definitely be a rich experience during your visit to New York City. You will see first-hand why Broadway is celebrated around the world as a hub of entertainment and excitement. <bio>Cruise the beautiful Hawaiian Islands =96 even if you're on a budget http://www.last-minute-hawaii-cruise.com </bio>

Frank Sinatra knew what he was singing about when he declared that he was going to be a part of it in New York. New York City is the queen of metropolitan life and the quintessence of globalized heritage. From the sensory excitement of Times Square's King Kong-sized interactive plasma screens to the serene greenery of Central Park's 850 acres, every aspect of New York life has been nurtured with exacting detail.

When you travel to New York, you'll quickly realize that New York's culture is an integral component to the social heritage of the United States, as nearly one out of every four Americans can trace their family genealogy back to Brooklyn at some point in time and one in thirty-seven Americans lives in New York Metropolitan Area. Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are both very popular among visitors, especially those interested in family immigration records or how America as a true "melting pot" was established. The borough of Brooklyn happens to be the most ethnically diverse county in the United States, while New York as a whole represents over 180 nations.

Cosmopolitan Capital with Charisma

You'll need far more than a New York minute with more patience than a New York attitude to fully indulge in the exciting and delightful offerings of the city. New York is centered in Manhattan, which is the main urban, cultural, intellectual and commercial hub. The 4 other incorporated boroughs are Queens (home to the Mets and the U.S. Open), The Bronx (home of the Yankees), Brooklyn (infamous for the fun and bizarre attractions of Coney Island), and Staten Island (connected to Manhattan by the largest suspension bridge in the U.S.).

Experience the heart of American theater at a Broadway or off-Broadway show and if you can fit it in, an opportunity to attend a classical performance at Carnegie Hall is priceless. Enjoy one of the world's premier opera companies at the Metropolitan Opera House while at the same time visiting the Lincoln Center, one of the largest arts and culture complexes on the planet. In Central Park, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a gloriously shining reminder that New York is not only home to the world's classics, but to an established and burgeoning society of independent artists and galleries worth exploration. Spend some time perusing art in Chelsea or catching the latest wave of music on the Lower East Side.

Layers beneath the Landmarks: Travel to New York

Beyond New York's countless famous landmarks, there is an intense depth of culture and society that defines the city and draws an endless stream of people to this exciting energy year after year. Neighborhoods like Little Italy may have lost some of their residents to commercialism, but there is still no better place to get cannelloni and some tiramisu. New York hosts some of the world's best established restaurants and nightclubs and its bohemian culture is a pioneer through diversity. Even better, you can travel and explore New York City with peace of mind knowing that today it has the lowest crime rate of America's 25 largest cities.
As the largest school district in the nation, with over a million students, the New York City Public Schools face a mammoth task. In some ways New York City Schools are at an advantage because New York State has required the stringent Regents exam as a requirement for graduation for years. That doesn't mean that everyone in the New York City Schools is fond of the mandatory tests, but it has put the city and state at an advantage as far as meeting some of the No Child Left Behind Act's Standards. At least teachers and administrators of the New York City Schools already had some tight standards in place.

Teachers in New York City Schools need to have or obtain a Master's Degree to teach. While the New York City Schools are in need of teachers, just like the rest of the nation, the standards that they hold their teachers to and the pay are among the highest in the country. That's not to say the New York City Schools don't have problems- they do. But the New York City Schools do have a sound foundation for hiring teachers.

Diversity of New York City Schools

For anyone who hasn't visited the Big Apple, it's not easy to explain the different worlds that exist in one city. It's like the difference between the hustle and busy of New York City and the rural feel of the rest of New York State- different worlds. For teachers in New York City it means that where you teach can make all the difference in the world. New York City school teachers in Harlem will have an inner-city experience, while New York City school teachers in Long Island may have a more suburban teaching experience.

Issues for New York City Schools

The size of New York City Schools and classrooms is an issue that has haunted teachers for years. Most teachers agree that smaller class sizes are more effective for creating learning environments. Some students and teachers in about 50 New York City Schools have moved into smaller sized school buildings. Teachers in New York City Schools say that smaller school sizes create a more intimate setting, better parent-teacher relationships, and higher student achievement. Teachers also have a better chance of individualizing instruction when there are fewer students in a classroom. While the small schools initiative was mainly targeted at school size, teachers try to address class size as well.

Teacher turnover has been an issue in many, usually poorer, New York City Schools. Coming up with ways to keep teachers happy in these at-risk areas continues to be a challenge. Tenured teachers often leave these for "better" schools. And turnover itself creates issues. The teachers in the New York City Schools have a tough job by anyone's standards. And as the country looks for solutions to public education, New York City Schools will continue to be watched closely. <bio>Patricia Hawke is a staff writer for Schools K-12, providing free, in-depth reports on all U.S. public and private K-12 schools.
The necessity to assess students is irrefutable. In fact, a lot of people believe that formal assessments are the only way to tell how a student is progressing, and teachers feel pressured to teach to the test. For many educators, part of their paycheck is based on how well students score on standardized tests. Fortunately for students and teachers alike, New York Public Schools recognize the need to not only assess them fairly and accurately, but also see the necessity of offering various kinds of tests to be used at the teachers' discretion.

New York Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein recently announced that all schools will have access to a range of flexible periodic assessment tools to help them track students' progress in English Language Arts and math starting in the 2007-08 school year. It's interesting and encouraging that the Chancellor recognizes the need for these tools. Perhaps even more interesting is the motivation behind them.

"Teachers have always used assessments to monitor their students' progress. Now they'll be able to find out quickly exactly what [New York Schools] students are learning and where they need more help," Chancellor Klein said. "These tools are quicker and more accurate than what =85 [New York Schools] have today. They'll make it easier for our educators to tailor instruction to meet the individual needs of every student."

The New York Schools Department of Education (DOE) has encouraged schools to use these kinds of no-stakes assessments since 2003. The 2007-2008 school year will be the first time that all New York Schools will have easy access to a menu of "differentiated assessment tools" rather than pre-packaged exams that do not necessarily match the needs of individual teachers and students.

It's important for schools and teachers to decide for themselves what kinds of assessments to use. Being able to choose their tools of assessment will enable New York Schools teachers more freedom of movement within their curriculum (how and when subjects will be taught) by freeing them from a high-stress testing date that only occurs once a year for all New York Schools students.

New York Schools can choose any combination of the new periodic assessment tools as long as they are assessing students five times a year in grades 3-8 and four times a year in high school in both English Language Arts and math. This policy must be intended to ensure that New York Schools teachers are actually using the new tools. This use should also give educators the opportunity to provide feedback to the New York Schools Chancellor and his staff on what works, what doesn't, and what they want to see more of.

Naturally, the leaders of New York Schools have the best interests of the students at heart, and want to provide the best possible education along with the means to assess the students' achievement. <bio>Patricia Hawke is a staff writer for Schools K-12, providing free, in-depth reports on all U.S. public and private K-12 schools.
I was once listening to German tourists in Canada talk about the United States. They were explaining all the things that they didn't like about the U.S. They said New York was the exception. They said New York had culture. New York had a European feel to it. They said Europeans would always like New York because of its cultural element. Having traveled extensively in European cities, spending so much money to do very little, I was thinking to myself that they were flattering themselves. There is no European city that is anything like New York. Yes there are fascinating cities in Europe, old cities with so much culture and history, cities that can not be compared to anywhere else, but with a New York feel? I don't think so.

New York City can not be compared to any other city in the world. It is the most densely populated city in North America. It is home to the United Nations. It is made up of five famous boroughs; Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island and Queens. If all of these boroughs were cities in their own right, with the exception of Staten Island, they would be among the most densely populated cities in North America. With 18.8 million people in New York City's metropolitan area, the city has no shortage of people. The city is unique and is one of the most exciting places on earth. It is often referred to as the city that never sleeps. There is always something to do in New York City. But it is New Yorkers who make the city what it is. And that includes everybody, the original Italian and Jewish immigrants, aspiring actors, angry taxi drivers, people who love New York and even people who hate New York.

There is fascinating architecture to see in New York City. There is fascinating history to learn about. If one wants to visit museums one can go to the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design, the Jewish Museum, the International Center of Photography, the Museum of The City of New York, El Museo de Barico, the Goethe House and the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts all located on what is known as museum mile. All of these museums are located on 5th Avenue in between 82 and 105 streets. There are plenty others also all over the city.

Classical concerts can be heard at the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and Brooklyn Academy of Music. One can even hear the New York Opera for free in Central Park during the summer months of June, July and August. Jazz lovers can enjoy big names at Radio City Music Hall or Madison Square Gardens or attend more intimate concerts in the numerous smaller jazz venues where so many big names started off.

Surprisingly, it is possible to have a fun and thrilling day in New York City without even spending one penny. You can go for a long walk in New York's enthralling Central Park and then visit some of New York's many fascinating landmarks. You can visit many radio and television stations like NBC. You can even be part of a live audience. It does not cost anything to sit in on a taping of David Letterman and watch your favorite band perform in the best acoustic situation possible. You just need to order your tickets ahead of time.

Apart from the live music, live theatre, history, architecture, sport venues, restaurants and shopping that the city is famous for, New York City has soul. It has a buzz. There is nowhere else on earth like New York City.

As Sammy Davis Junior once said, "When you leave New York, you ain't goin' nowhere." <bio>Johnny Moon is a contributer to the best New York Hotel Reservations site in the world: http://www.NewYorkHotelDeals.US </bio>

Availing a mortgage loan is commonplace in the United States where majority of the citizens own personal properties across the country. Their personal property will serve as collateral to assure the bank or financing institution of payment of loans. If you live in New York and is planning to get a mortgage loan, you must know a number of facts about New York mortgage loans.

The standard New York mortgage loans, as is similar to other states, follows the Fixed Rate Mortgage (FRM) loan model. A Fixed Rate Mortgage is paid periodically with a fixed interest rate over a loan term, which can take up to 30 years. The main advantage of the Fixed rate Mortgage over the Floating Rate Mortgage is that no changes are supposed to take effect on the principal and the interest rate throughout the life of the loan. This is especially an advantage for start-up families who need the loan as capital.

New York mortgage loans will be tagged as a conforming mortgage, or a mortgage with an acceptable level of risks, if the loan met the rules of at least two major entities in the finance market that is sponsored by the government.

No need to worry, lenders of New York mortgage loans usually use the salary of an applicant as reference for a mortgage loan so a bundle of pay slips together with real estate documents can be enough to persuade approval of the loan. Even self-employed individuals have their Self-Certification Mortgages to be able to apply for a New York mortgage loan. Evidently, New York mortgage loans are easily acquired as long as you have the proper documents with you.

Please note: all above information is not an advice. Before you make ANY financial decisions please contact with your financial adviser. Your financial adviser can keep up with changing federal regulations regarding to new york mortgage loans. <bio>For more articles and resources on New York mortgage loans http://newyorkmortgageloans.us please visit our website. </bio>

New York is a city that vibrates with energy. It is one of the most dynamic cities, having a densely packed and multi-cultured population. You find colliding languages, cultures and nuances here where you are stimulated all the 24 hours of a day with highs and lows of fun.

Wherever you go in New York, you will feel that you have seen it all before. Be it the leafy Central Park, the lady liberty or the French bistro in Soho as all this has been shown in a movie or a television serial. However, there is something special in seeing these landmarks, and many more, of the 'city that never sleeps'.

You will find that New York consists of five boroughs; the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn and the Manhattan. Those who visit Manhattan seldom leave it as so much is packed here. You find the 24-hour pasta restaurants, sidewalks of Chinatown, the theaters of Broadway and the jazz clubs of Greenwich Village all merged in Manhattan. Moreover, you also find the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and the Empire State Building here.

New York has often been called the best place to spend a three day holiday. You find beautiful museums, bars, clubs and galleries. You have a choice of spending your day in the National Park of Upstate New York, the leafy oasis of Central Park and the beaches of Long Island. You get to be bewitched and bewildered by the pulse of New York.

The Statue of Liberty is the universal symbol of the country of New York. It was the first sight that 12 million immigrants passing through the Ellis Island Immigration Center got to see when they came to New York. The Statue of Liberty was sculptured by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, and modeled on the Colossus of Rhodes. It was donated by the people of France in the year of 1886 to commemorate the alliance between the country of France and America. You can climb its 354 steps to reach the crown of the statue where you get a panoramic view over the New York harbor. The height here is equivalent to a 22 story building.

The twin towers of the world trade center were destroyed with the blast of September 11, 2001, where about 3,000 people had lost their lives. A worldwide competition was held in April 2003 to design a memorial to the world trade center, where the Reflecting Absence, created by Michael Arad and Peter Walker was chosen. The Empire State building is another enduring symbol of New York. It is the city's tallest structure which is one of the most impressive engineering feats. It was built in 410 days and has been immortalized in many films, like King Kong. You can get a beautiful view of the city from the 86th and 102nd floors.

There are numerous museums it New York housing works of art from the masters of art. All lovers are sure to enjoy a visit to anyone of these museums. New York offers continental climate where you find cold winters and hot summers. Transportation is convenient with a choice of buses, trains and cars. Access to New York is possible through the numerous airports you have here. And for your communication sake, you can use any phone card or calling card from the various phone booths found here. These cards are found practically everywhere, making it easy and convenient for you to make your phone calls. Several prepaid calling card and phone card companies are available to call both to and from New York City. <bio>Josiah William works in marketing for http://www.cheapphonecards.com, http://www.dealking.com, http://www.snapmobile.com and eCellular. </bio>

It also is one of the most populated cities in the US with more than 8 million residents. New York City plays a very important role in the global economy. It is a very important location for the United Nations who works to bring peace to the world through international relationships. It is an area well known for financing, and trading. Some of the world's highest skyscrapers are found in the business sector of New York City.

Due to the large amount of people in New York City, roads are very congested. Many people take modes of public transportation to commute including taxi cabs, buses, and the subway. It is not uncommon for residents of New York City to not own a vehicle. New York City is known for being a trend setter from fashion to food. In 2005 it became the first city to ban trans fats from the restaurants. This will be effective by 2008.

New York City is divided into five main areas. Each has a history and character of its own. Manhattan is the least populated area of New York City. Skyscrapers and historical landmarks make this a common area for tourism. The arts and entertainment are popular here as well. The Bronx has a rap/hip hop culture to it. This is a very poor area of New York City with low levels of education, high unemployment rates, and one of the highest crime rates.

Brooklyn is an area full of history. It is also a huge residential area. People come here to experience the fun of Coney Island including the beach and amusement parks. Queens has three major airports and is a hub for the other areas of New York City. Staten Island is connected to Manhattan via a ferry. It is undergoing construction to become the largest urban park in the US.

Perhaps the most historical event to take place in New York City is the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11th of 2001. Two planes taken control of by terrorists crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. This was an event that took many lives and affected the economy of the world. <bio>Find Discount New York Hotels at http://www.newyork-hotels.us/ </bio>

One of the best types of eye surgery out there is lasik. New York has some of the best eye surgeons to provide that surgery, too. Throughout the area you will find many different companies that offer this type of surgery, but you are likely not to be able to tell the difference between them just by looking at them. Unfortunately, though, there are differences that can affect the quality of the vision that you end up with as well as the experience that you go through. The good news is that you can find quality lasik, New York area and beyond.

To do this, take the time to look for other patients that have gone through lasik in your area. In New York, one of the largest areas for this type of corrective surgery, you'll find many people that have experiences to tell you about. You can also look for reviews on the web of local doctors.
