Strep throat is a very common illness that occurs in all humans of all ages most often in the winter months. It is an infection of the pharynx and possibly the larynx and the tonsils. It is a form of group A streptococcal infections. Group A streptococcal infections cause such illnesses as pneumonia, tonsillitis, arthritis, meningitis, osteomyelitis, scarlet fever and sinusitis. Strep throat is the swelling of the throat and can cause pain when talking or swallowing. Some severe cases cause problems with breathing because the throat swells up so much that it cuts off the airwaves through the mouth.

The symptoms of strep throat are rash, hives, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, red and enlarged tonsils, sudden and severe sore throat, yellow and white patches in the throat, trouble swallowing and general discomfort.

Doctors can diagnose strep throat by simply looking at a patient's throat. Doctors will also swab the back of the throat with a stick to pick up some of the mucus and test it for an infection. This is called a throat culture, which is also known as a Rapid Strep Test because the results come back within 10 to 15 minutes and are done within the doctor's office. They are not sent to a nearby medical lab for diagnosis. If the test comes back negative and the patient really isn't feeling well it could suggest that there is a viral infection somewhere else in the body.

If the throat culture comes back positive the patient will be prescribed antibiotics, which should have the infection cleared up within 36-48 hours. Because strep throat is contagious, patients suffering from the illness should not go to school or work for the duration of treatment. Doctors will write a note to send to school with a younger patient explaining why they missed two days of classes. Some strep throat cases can last as long as eight days.

Strep throat can be contracted through air-based germs. It can also be on infected pillow cases, toys, utensils, pens, pencils, clothing and even toothbrushes. The main antibiotic prescribed to strep throat patients is Penicillin. Once detected and treated, strep throat is not life threatening but can cause other health problems if left untreated by a patient. If they have symptoms of strep throat they should see a doctor and have antibiotics prescribed to avoid any long term problems.

Strep throat, which is caused by an infection, can also affect the blood, throat and the skin. It can also flare up herpes if the patient is suffering from herpes as well as causing scarlet fever. Some strains of strep throat can be so severe that they can cause the reduction of blood pressure which in turn can lead to lung injuries and kidney failure. Strep throat cannot be avoided because it is caused by air-born bacteria that is unavoidable and contagious. Even though strep throat is unavoidable it is still treatable. One way to try and avoid strep throat is to constantly keep washing your hands with germ killing soap.<bio>Holly Springs DentistryQuality Cosmetic Dentistry</bio>

Its most common symptoms are: nausea, difficulty to swallow, fatigue, fever, a red =96 colored throat, cold chills, headache, pain and discomfort of the throat. It is not a severe disease, but some of its complications such as rheumatic fever, kidney problems or coronary damage may be.

It may affect anyone, especially in winter, late fall, in early spring, but the most exposed to it are children between the ages of 5 and 15. This is the larges segment of population with strep throat.

This disease is extremely contagious and it usually affects your child when he or she is in direct contact with someone that has it or that carries the bacteria. It may be transmitted through nasal secretions, saliva or through air. In order to partly prevent the infection with streptococcus pyogenes you should explain to your child how important it is for him/her to wash hands frequently and to stay away from persons that have strep throat. The dishes or glasses used by a person affected by this condition shouldn't be shared with the healthy family members in order to avoid their contamination.

The infection can be successfully defeated by the proper treatment. it is important for you or your child to take only antibiotics that have been prescribed by the doctor. If the pharyngeal exudate detects strep throat, your health care professional will prescribe you penicillin V, clarithromycin and erythromycin in order to cure it immediately.

Even if your symptoms improve or even disappear, don't interrupt the antibiotics. You need to follow the entire course of the prescribed treatment. Strep throat is not a disease that may stop you from your daily activities. It will be safe for you to be in contact with people after 2 or 3 days of antibiotics, when you are no longer contagious. Hygiene should be kept at high standards, even if you are no longer contagious, in order to protect you and the people around you. <bio>For more information visit http://www.strepthroatinfection.com </bio>

The specialists at Rockefeller University performed a complicated medical research which has as main result, the identification of another possible cause of strep throat: a bacteriophage. The so far neglected microorganism that eats bacteria seems to cause not only strep throat but also many other conditions of bacterial nature. It is a surprising discovery, because the main role of the bacteriophages is to infect and destroy a large variety of bacteria, thus also Group A hemolytic streptococcus bacteria, the cause of strep throat.

Researchers blame the bacteriophage for some of the cases of strep throat; the results of their series of studies contradict the traditional belief that bacteriophages don't produce infections inside the human organism. What makes them responsible for conditions like strep throat seems to be the fact that they appear to transfer toxins between bacteria. This discovery is very important, because it gives the answer to the question why some of the patients that test positive for Group A hemolytic streptococcus bacteria lack the symptoms of strep throat and other develop both the disease and one of its complications.

Bacteriophages are viral microorganisms that seem to alter the normal benign function of a large variety of bacteria as it is the case with E -- coli that was proved to have a malign function that causes ulcer, although its normal role is to protect the intestinal flora from the external invasions. The study of bacteriophages may help in the identification of a treatment for diseases caused by altered bacterial functions.

Researchers consider strep throat to be generated by a lysogenic conversion, a process in which a bacteriophage carries a toxin to Group A hemolytic streptococcus bacteria, transforming thus what was supposed to be a harmless microorganism into a dangerous one that generates various conditions. A component factor of the saliva, SPIF, makes the lysogenic conversion easier and quicker because it produces the mobilization of the bacteriophages.

On mice, any bacterium appears to be able to convert non-toxicogen and non-infectious agents in toxicogenic infectious agents in presence of a bacteriophage that carries a toxin in its structure. The conversion is made through the very contact. The studies reached the conclusion that the bacteriophage should be controlled too in order to treat diseases generated by lysogenic conversion whose previous treatment only focused on bacteria such as Group A hemolytic streptococcus bacteria in strep throat. <bio>For more information visit http://www.strepthroatinfection.com </bio>

Strep throat represents an acute bacterial form of pharingitis that requires antibiotic treatment and is caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus bacteria. There are also viral forms of acute pharingitis -- the common throat sores, which may have the same symptoms of strep throat: difficulty to swallow, soreness, inflammation of the throat and discomfort. This similarity between their symptoms leads to confusion, in absence of accurate and proper investigation: although they are generated by different factors, strep throat can be taken for sore throat and the other way around. Usually sore throats don't need treatment, so there are cases in which the proper medication is not given to people that have strep throat because of diagnosis errors. The same errors may lead to the administering of strong antibiotics to patients that don't need them. So it is vital to have an accurate diagnosis in order to prevent such situations.

Cases of erroneous diagnosis have been recently investigated and the results were worrying: 50 % of the children that have strep throat are prescribed antibiotics they don't need while 33 % of the children with strep throat are not prescribed the necessary treatment (they either receive the wrong treatment or not receive medications at all). The persons to blame for that are the physicians and pediatricians, because there are very efficient methods to diagnose and distinguish viral from bacterial pharingitis, which makes their error unjustifiable.

Antibiotics are very effective when properly used but they may also cause strong side effects. in case of proper administration, these side effects may be: allergies, nausea, weakness of the immune system. When they are not needed but still prescribed, they have no positive effects; they may be damaging for the patient instead. In case a patient with strep throat receives other antibiotic prescription than one of the spectrum of amoxicillin, penicillin derivates, erythromycin or cephalosporins, or if the doses are not correct, side effects may appear. One of the risks of such situation is that of bacterial resistance to the treatment. Inappropriate treatment induces the person the tendency to have lower response to future antibiotics administration, which makes necessary for that person to take higher doses.

The available methods to obtain the exact diagnosis of strep throat are effective enough so that many erroneous diagnoses are not excusable.

One such method is the simple, but very effective and reliable pharyngeal exudate test, which consists in the culture of a secretion sample by means of a spatula rubbed against the walls of the throat. Laboratory tests will then be performed on the sample and will identify whether the infection is caused by viruses or bacteria. In case the streptococcus bacteria results to be the cause, antibiotics are prescribed in order to eradicate the infection.

Antibiotics are not recommended for viral infections of the throat. The pharyngeal exudate will thus help to avoid their needless prescription. It is a simple, rapid and inexpensive test so you should take it to make sure you receive the correct diagnosis and treatment. <bio>For more information visit http://www.strepthroatinfection.com </bio>

Sore throat ailment is widespread during winter months and viral outbreaks. Signaling the onset of cold or flu, it is preceded by sneezing, coughing, runny nose, pain in the throat and fatigue.

Chamomile tea had every few hours will ease the pain and reduce inflammation. Sage is beneficial in treating throat pains by reducing inflammations and protects the membranes of the mouth and throat, while garlic is a natural antibiotic helpful in speedy recovery and removal of bacteria in case of sore throat caused by flue or bacterial infection. Beside the above alternatives, one should take proper rest; drink extra fluids and gargle twice or thrice a day with warm salt water.

Strep throat is a contagious infection of the pharynx (throat) by the streptococcal bacteria, resulting in pain and inflammation. Symptoms of strep throat are sore throat, pain during swallowing of foods, headache, fever, general ill feeling, appetite loss, ear pain especially when swallowing, tender or swollen red glands in the neck, tonsil swelling, redness, and infection. The infection spreads through saliva and nasal secretions through coughing, sneezing, and touching. Strep throat is caused by person to person contact with an infected individual. Strep throat occurs most commonly in children between the ages of 5 and 15, but it affects people of all ages.

Strep throat if left untreated can cause complications such as tonsillitis, sinusitis, ear infection, fever and rashes, inflammation of kidney and rheumatic fever.

Strep throat can be prevented with proper hygiene. Proper cleaning of hands prevents all kinds of infection. Hence it is important to clean your hands every time it gets dirty and also teach the same to your children. Educate on your children on covering their mouths while coughing or sneezing. Despite take care, if you or your child still gets infected, none should use the same utensils, drinking glasses or share any other common sources of infection transmission.

Doctors will prescribe antibiotics when the condition gets worse, though one still has to take utmost self care.

- Getting plenty of rest and sleep helps to fight body infection.

- By drinking plenty of water the throat is lubricated, moist, eases swallowing and prevents dehydration.

- Eat foods such as soups, cooked cereals, mashed potatoes, soft fruits, yogurt and soft-cooked eggs as they are easy on a sore throat.

- Cold foods such as frozen yoghurts, fruit popsicles are also soothing. It is ideal to avoid spicy and acidic foods.

- Gargling with warm salt water several times a day helps to relieve throat pain.

- A cool mist humidifier will put more moisture in the air, making sticky, dry, irritated throats feel better.

- Saline nasal sprays also help to keep mucous membranes moist.

- Irritants such as smoke, pollution, paint or products with strong odor and smell can irritate the throat, lungs and increase the likelihood of infection.

- Warm soaks will soothe throat pain as well, and reduce inflammation to glands.

- Sage taken in a pill or tincture form will reduce the inflammation in the throat and ear areas.

- Garlic is also effective for speedy recovery and removal of bacteria with its natural antibiotic properties.

The reader of this article should exercise all precautions while following instructions on the recipes from this article.
The primary symptom of acid reflux is heartburn. Heartburn is a burning sensation that radiates up from the stomach to the chest and throat. It is most likely to occur in conjunction with the following activities: lying down on your back, lifting, bending over or after eating a heavy meal.

Another common symptom is regurgitation, which is the feeling of acid backing up in the throat. Acid can regurgitate as far as the mouth in what is sometimes called a `wet burp'. In rare instances, acid regurgitation can exit as vomit.

Acid reflux sufferers that frequently experience symptoms at night tend to have more severe symptoms than those that suffer during the day. However, most acid reflux sufferers experience their symptoms at night. Acid reflux can indicate a damaged esophagus, so it is best to consult a doctor when experiencing continued acid reflux symptoms. Even with severe heartburn, it is not an indicator of an injury to the esophagus. People can suffer sever heartburn without damage to the esophagus.

There are symptoms of acid reflux that are less common. One such symptom is chest sensations or pain in the chest. Patients may feel that there is food trapped behind the breastbone.

Another less common symptom is throat irritation including dry cough, hoarseness, or having a lump in the throat and always having to clear your throat. In rare cases, a person may have trouble swallowing their food, causing severe chest pain. In this case, there is the feeling that the food is stuck in the esophagus. Other symptoms include persistent hiccups or chronic sore throat.

Some acid reflux sufferers experience asthmatic symptoms such as coughing and wheezing. Even nonsmoking people suffer from a cough associated with acid reflux. A patient may experience persistent nausea for weeks at a time that is not associated with any common cause of stomach upset may be a symptom of acid reflux. Even vomiting can occur on a daily basis. However, other causes of chronic vomiting and nausea need to be ruled out, before determining that the cause is acid reflux.

There is a condition known as Barrett's Esophagus. This condition occurs by repeated acid reflux occurrences, which cause changes to the lining of the esophagus. Approximately 10% of these cases will develop into esophagus cancer. If you suffer from Barrett's Esophagus you must undergo regular examinations and you should be receiving continued acid reflux treatment. <bio>Thomas D.
More and more people are having problems with heartburn acid reflux symptoms. The burning and pain associated with it are costing people both money and time.

This increase has a lot to do with our modern lifestyle, so this means that there are steps people can take to control symptoms. Being overweight is one of the causes behind this problem, and with the numbers of obese people climbing each year, it is understandable that the cases of chronic heartburn are piling up. Stress is a big problem too, as it leads to behaviors that make reflux worse.

It is a good idea for someone with heartburn acid reflux to understand the difference between an occasional nuisance and a problem that needs medical attention.

Almost everyone will have a bout of heartburn or two at one point or another in their lifetime. This happens when eating spicy foods or perhaps when someone has been drinking a lot of coffee and has forgotten to eat. Many of the foods that promote excess acid production can cause problems for anyone on occasion. Normally this is harmless and goes away with a simple over-the-counter medication and is forgotten about. Occasional sufferers never wake up at night with pain, and they never have any of the secondary symptoms.

Those who are diagnosed with GERD have a different story to tell. The main thing they feel most of the time is the burning that is associated with the acid production, and when that acid leaks up into the esophagus and throat, it hurts.

When this is happening, there may be damage to these tissues as they are not capable of handling that acid. There are many times when someone with GERD feels like they have a lump in their throat, or they may experience a sore throat on a regular basis. They will probably find that they are also waking up many times during the night. Sinus problems are sometimes a secondary symptom that points to problems with acid reflux.

There are other secondary symptoms that indicate a case of acid reflux might need medical intervention. They may seem unrelated, but when you add them to the more common and obvious hearturn symptoms, they are an indication that medications might be needed.

These might include a sore throat in the morning and even a feeling like there is a lump in throat or it is closing up. A person with GERD might feel tired each day from waking up many times in the night with pain and other symptoms. Once all of these fall into place, it will be obvious that something is wrong and damage from acid escaping into the esophagus may have occurred.

These symptoms are hard to deal with, but there is a lot of hope for anyone who has heartburn acid reflux. There are medications that can help reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. These are called proton pump inhibitors. They stop the production of acid so that the tissues that have been damaged have a chance to heal. These are only needed for about two months and healing should be complete.

Add a change in diet and stress management to that and these together can greatly help with many of the heartburn acid reflux symptoms. <bio>By Kathryn Whittaker. It can rapidly progress to severe and intractable hypotension and multisystem dysfunction. Desquamation, particularly on the palms and soles can occur 1-2 weeks after onset of the illness.

Prevention The bacteria that cause toxic shock syndrome can be carried on unwashed hands and prompt an infection anywhere on the body. So hand washing is extremely important.

Females can reduce their risk of TSS by either avoiding tampons or alternating them with sanitary napkins. If a girl uses only tampons, it's important to choose tampons with the lowest absorbency that will handle her menstrual flow and to change the tampons frequently. Between menstrual periods, it's a good idea to store tampons away from heat and moisture (where bacteria can grow) - for example, in a bedroom rather than in a bathroom closet.

Because staphylococcus bacteria are often carried on dirty hands, it's important to wash your hands thoroughly before and after inserting a tampon. If your daughter is just starting her menstrual period, she should know about taking these precautions. Any female who has recovered from TSS should check with her doctor before using tampons again.

The best defense against STSS is to clean and bandage all skin wounds as quickly as possible. Call your doctor immediately whenever a wound becomes red, swollen, or tender, or if a fever begins. Although STSS almost never follows strep throat, it's wise to check with your doctor whenever your child has a sore throat with fever, particularly if your child's condition is worsening despite medical treatment.

Diagnosis and Treatment Call your doctor immediately if you experience the signs or symptoms of toxic shock syndrome, especially if you're menstruating or have just finished menstruating and have been using tampons. Tell your doctor what your symptoms are, how long you've had them and when your period started.

You may need to provide blood and urine samples to test for the presence of a staph infection. Samples from your vagina, cervix and throat may be taken for laboratory analysis by using cotton swabs.

Doctors typically diagnose TSS and STSS by doing a physical exam and conducting blood tests that assess a child's liver and kidney function. In toxic shock syndrome, doctors may want to rule out conditions like measles or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which can produce similar symptoms. A doctor may also take samples of fluid from an abscess, boil, or infected wound to look for a possible source of staphylococcus or streptococcus infection.

Doctors typically treat TSS with antibiotics. If there is a pocket of infection, like an abscess, a doctor also may need to drain the infected area. A child who has TSS is monitored for signs of shock until the condition has stabilized and seems to be improving. Steroids are also sometimes used to treat severe cases of TSS.

As with TSS, doctors typically treat STSS with antibiotics and give intravenous fluids and medications to maintain normal blood pressure. Surgery is sometimes necessary to remove areas of dead skin and muscle around an infected wound. <bio>Can Toxic Shock Syndrome Be Prevented?
Laryngitis is when the larynx becomes inflamed. The voice becomes hoarse and there can possibly be a complete loss of voice because the vocal cords become irritated by the inflammation. Laryngitis can be acute; lasting less than three days or it can be chronic; lasting for more than three weeks.

There are a handful of symptoms for laryngitis:

• Having a dry, sore throat.
• Difficulty swallowing liquids or food.
• Constantly coughing; this ironically can cause laryngitis itself.
• Swelling of the larynx.
• Swollen lymph glands in the throat, face or chest.
• Having a cold or flu-like symptoms; this ironically can also cause laryngitis.
• Suffering from a fever.

When should you see a doctor? If you begin to cough up green or yellow phlegm or even blood; you should consult a doctor immediately. If you have a history of breathing problems, such as having to sit upright while breathing, you should see your doctor as quickly as possible because laryngitis could be a life threatening problem.

There are plenty of causes of laryngitis. They are excessive smoking, coughing, alcohol consumption, an infection from a fungus, inflammation due to overuse of the vocal cords and a viral infection.

There are a variety of different treatments for laryngitis. Some of them are breathing in moist air, resting your voice, drink plenty of fluids, treat the underlying cause of laryngitis and suck on lozenges. You can breath in moist air by sitting in the bathroom with the shower running on hot or putting hot water in a bowl and breathing in the steam. Drinking plenty of fluids helps to prevent dehydration, treating alcoholism or excessive smoking will help rid of laryngitis and sucking on lozenges makes the throat wetter and takes away the dryness and soreness.

Sometimes acid reflux can lead to laryngitis. If so, taking pills to prevent or downplay the symptoms of acid reflux can help against laryngitis. Such pills are Zantac or Prilosec.

With laryngitis, more so young children and older adults, the risk of your throat swelling shut is great. If this occurs get to a hospital as soon as possible. The treatment for a swelled shut throat is a breathing tube being placed in your throat, the patient being placed on a ventilator and the patient will have an IV in them. The IV will be pumping antibiotics and more than likely steroids into the patient's body.

Laryngitis, like having a cold, is almost impossible to defend against. One precaution most people take is constantly washing their hands before they touch their face or their mouth. Young children should receive the influenza vaccine which can help prevent this sickness which can possibly be deadly for children at a very young age.

If the symptoms of laryngitis do not go away after 2-3 weeks you should consult a doctor again. Why? There is a slim possibility that there could be a tumor in your throat that needs further medical attention before it develops into anything life threatening.<bio>Nebraska Drug Recovery Midwest Alcoholism</bio>

What is Laryngitis? The larynx houses your vocal chords which are which mucous membrane folds that cover cartilage and muscle. All of this forms the entrance to your wind pipe. If any infection or irritation occurs the larynx (voice box) becomes inflamed. This is referred as Laryngitis. With the inflammation and irritation that laryngitis causes, the swelling of the vocal chords that occurs from the inflammation or irritation causes the sound to distort as the air passes over the swollen vocal chords. When your vocal chords are healthy they open and close smoothly allowing for undistorted sounds occurring, which we recognise as normal speech. Short-term or acute laryngitis is not a serious disorder and can be cured relatively quickly. Long-term laryngitis however, also referred to as chronic laryngitis that presents itself with a persistent hoarseness can indicate a more serious condition, in which case you should see your doctor or medical health practitioner. Some of the causes of chronic laryngitis are from excessive alcohol use, a reflux of stomach acid into the throat or esophagus. This is called gastroesophageal reflux disease.

The symptoms of Laryngitis are quite easy to identify. They include a dry throat or dry cough. The throat may be come sore and raw along with a tickling sensation in the area of the larynx. Laryngitis will also cause the sufferer to develop a weak voice and their speech may become hoarse. Laryngitis often occurs along side other illnesses such as flu, cold or pneumonia. Often it is a viral infection that causes laryngitis, but laryngitis may also be caused by bacterial infections. Although the symptoms mentioned above can occur in people of any age, sometimes there are other symptoms that come with the disorder particularly in adults and the elderly. These include the paralysing of the vocal chords due to a lung tumor, stroke or an injury. Sores and growths on the vocal chords, such as ulcers, polyps or nodules. The loosing of the vocal chords associated with the elderly, due to aging. <bio>Janie Jonah http://www.perfectdrugrx.com (c) 2006, PerfectDrugRx.
I'm willing to bet that almost everybody knows exactly what heartburn is, I'm sure that the vast majority of us have actually experienced heartburn first hand, and even if you haven't I'm sure you know somebody that suffers from it. Im going to explain what severe gerd symptoms are and what you can do about it.

Heartburn is a pain that starts behind the breastbone, it is very close to the heart, hence the name. Heartburn actually has nothing to do with the heart, actually it is caused by stomach acid entering the esophagus. This symptom normally occurs just after eating a meal.

Gastriesioghageal reflux disease is where stomach acid refluxes (moves back) into the esophagus, this occurs a number of times. The stomach is designed to handle acid, the esophagus is not. This reflux can cause damage to the esophagus.

There are a number of digestive disorders, all of which have similar symptoms, there are some pretty easy ways to identify which type of disorder you're actually suffering from. If you get persistent heartburn, and you regurgitate acid then you are more than likely suffering from heartburn.

There are many different symptoms associated with heartburn, from the burning feeling that you get in your chest, to sour taste, loss of voice, and even shortness of breath. This is the main reason why heartburn is so often misdiagnosed as a heart attack. Heartburn often gets worse just after eating.

There are certain foods which make heartburn worse, these are things that contain tomatoes, citrus fruits, and chocolate. You should avoid these as much as possible. Drinking tea and coffee can also cause you to have heartburn.

Heartburn also sometimes causes a burning of the throat which makes swallowing difficult and painful, you may notice the taste of bile in your mouth and you may be unable to stop coughing.

Above are severe gerd symptoms, however there are hundreds, the exact symptoms you suffer from will depend completely upon you.

Sometimes people who suffer from GERD find it very difficult to swallow their saliva, and there is an uncomfortable feeling in their throat like something is stuck there.

Whatever you're suffering from, don't suffer in silence there are many treatments available to you for severe gerd symptoms. <bio>Discover the 100% all natural cure for your acid reflux and stop heartburn today.
Burning, oh the burning in my stomach and even my throat!

Acid reflux symptoms are most often described by sufferers as burning, gnawing, painful and oh, yes, chronic...like the kind that refuses to go away, chronic...and persistent... and burning!

Painful, chronic persistent heartburn that lasts three or more months and occurs at least twice each and every week is often diagnosed as Acid Reflux Disease or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). This pesky little nuisance can cause long term damage to the esophagus if left untreated.

Erosive esophagitis, wow... that even sounds painful just reading those words..., occurs when the gastric acids bubbling backwards through the LES, the lower esophageal sphincter, and into the esophagus eventually eroding away the lining of the esophagus causing not only the erosions but often times inflammation and tissue damage as well.

This leaves the patient with a very painful esophagus which can make swallowing undesirable and quite difficult.

In the adult population, acid reflux symptoms are classically seen as heartburn, chest pain, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), pain or an uncomfortable feeling in the upper middle part of the stomach (dyspepsia) and even difficulty swallowing or the feeling of a lump in the throat.

Less common symptoms include a chronic cough, wheezing, hoarseness, a sore throat and earaches.

When trying to minimize the symptoms of GERD it is important to remember that everyone is different!

Some easy things to try include losing weight if obesity is an issue, avoiding or at least decreasing alcohol consumption, eliminating or decreasing smoking, and avoid foods which may trigger acid reflux symptoms.

Food triggers can include chocolate, caffeinated drinks, spicy foods, garlic, onions, tomato-based foods, fatty foods, fried foods, mint flavorings, citrus fruits. Bummer, sounds like that leaves out a lot of my favorite foods!!

But it is certainly worth making the lifestyle changes necessary to avoid the pain of acid reflux disease symptoms. <bio>For more important information on stomach pain be sure to visit http://a-stomach-pain.com where you will find advice and tips on common stomach pain causes such as acid reflux, ulcers, and other articles that you can view at http://www.a-stomach-pain.com/flx/acid-reflux.html </bio>

What we normal folk (as we would like to believe that we are) call a sore throat is referred to in medical terms as pharyngitis. A sore throat can be quite painful when the patient attempts to swallow food or liquids, the soreness from this can be unbearable - so therefore the sufferer tends to go with out - due to their inability to eat - up to an extent where they starve themselves to avoid the discomfort. And if you enjoy getting up behind a microphone to give a song - forget it - because karaoke is definitely out of the question.

A sore throat is normally caused by a virus infection. Soreness in the throat may not only be the main symptom, you may experience loss of voice, hoarseness, cough, high fever, feeling nauseated, lethargic. At this time you may notice the glands in your neck swelling. A person suffering from a throat infection will do their best in holding back with a coughing bout - purely because of the pain. Over a period of time (a couple of days) the symptoms can worsen but can gradually disappear within seven days. If it persists speak with your doctor.

Depending on the severity (severe) a sore throat is some times thought of by the biggest majority of people as having tonsillitis. What is tonsillitis - well it is an infection of the tonsils at the back of the mouth. It is quite understandable for why the confusion between both (sore throat/tonsillitis) because the symptoms are very similar like sore throat signs. With tonsillitis you may notice at the back of your mouth some pus which resembles white spots which appear to look like enlarged red tonsils. In other words - inflamed and swollen.

There are many available options in the form of medicines to help ease the pain from a sore throat. However, some people opt not to take medication, and endure the pain that comes with the ailment. Drink plenty of fluids if possible - because without realizing it - you can become mildly dehydrated when not quenching the thirst. More suffering and misery can rise from this. Painkillers like paracetamol and ibuprofen are common pain relievers.

Always consult your doctor first before taking any medication - especially tablets or pills not prescribed by a person in the medical profession. Medicines purchased over the chemist counter can help but make sure you follow the instructions accordingly.

Throat and tonsil infections are nearly always connected to a virus, although some can be caused by bacteria. Medical tests are the only way to decipher which is which. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics if a bacterium is present, however they do not kill viruses. Bear in mind that not all antibiotics are thought to make much difference when going to work on bacteria. Every one differs greatly in their needs for a cure (treatment) the reason for this is - because we all suffer differently.

Your immune system usually clears these infections within a few days. Antibiotics are known to cause side affects so you need to be aware of this. Trouble controlling the bowels, diarrhoea, rash, and stomach upsets are all ailments of the side affects involved. If in doubt always check it out with a doctor - in case the sore throat could be the beginning of some other illness. <bio>Health matters http://www.onlinehealthaffairs.com Weight worries http://www.globaldieting.com or http://www.dietingeducation.com </bio>

Sleep apnea is a disorder that causes a person to frequently stop breathing when sleeping. The episodes occur as often as a hundred times a night, and can last up to a minute each. Over 10 million Americans experience sleep apnea symptoms, but only 0.6 million have actually been diagnosed. Undiagnosed cases are attributed to a lack of awareness within the general and health populations. In addition, sleep apnea symptoms arise from feeling tired, which is a common occurrence and may not be recognized as a symptom to investigate.

There are three classifications of sleep apnea symptoms: obstructive, central and mixed. Obstructive is the most common sleep apnea. It involves the relaxation of the throat muscles to the point of obstructing the airway. Sleep apnea symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, abrupt awakenings accompanied by shortness of breath, morning headache, difficulty staying asleep, awakening with dry mouth or sore throat.

Sleep apnea symptoms are not unusual. Sometimes the symptoms for obstructive and central sleep apnea overlap, making definitive diagnoses difficult. The severity and frequency of sleep apnea symptoms are important to note. Daytime sleepiness is one of the sleep apnea symptoms that could easily be considered working too hard, bad week, etc, but are the frequency and consistencies excessive. Do you fall asleep without warning? Do you fall asleep at inappropriate times? Do you feel drowsy for days, even weeks in a row?

Loud snoring is one of the most common sleep apnea symptoms. Loud snoring, especially snorting could be worth investigating. With obstructive sleep apnea, sleep apnea symptoms result from the throat muscles relaxing so far as to collapse the windpipe upon inhaling. When the brain triggers the muscles to tighten to breathe again, the arousal is accompanied by a snort.

Observed episodes of breathing cessation during sleep are the less easily noticed sleep apnea symptoms. This means that someone else actually witnessed the sleeper stop breathing. Abrupt awakening with shortness of breath after these episodes is more often a central sleep apnea symptom, than of obstructive, which means the brain, is not sending proper signals to the breathing muscles.

Difficulty staying asleep is one of the sleep apnea symptoms directly related to the frequent awaken signals issued by the brain. When the blood oxygen level drops, the body responds, arousing the sleeper long enough to resume breathing. The sleep pattern, therefore, is frequently interrupted resulting in restlessness.

Morning headache, along with dry mouth and sore throat are sleep apnea symptoms resulting from lack of oxygen to the brain, and the frequent gasps for air when breathing is resumed. In addition, mental impairment from restlessness and interrupted sleep can result in memory lapses, problems concentrating, personality changes and even depression.

Sleep apnea symptoms, left untreated, can lead to potentially dangerous and life threatening consequences, such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Fortunately, sleep apnea symptoms, though common and sometimes vague can be diagnosed and treated. Several treatments exist and research to develop additional options is ongoing. <bio>Do you suffer from sleep apnea?
There is a very common condition called globus pharyngis that is best described as feeling like there is a lump in your throat. Though this condition can be caused by many different factors, acid reflux is one of the leading causes of globus pharyngis.

Forty five percent of the population will experience globus pharyngis at some time or another in their lives. It can feel either like a solid lump or ball in the throat, or as fullness in the throat, close to the area of the cervical esophagus. The strange thing about gobus pharyngis is that though there is a specific, definable sensation to the individual sufferer, there is no detectable abnormality in the throat when examined by a doctor.

Currently no single explanation has been accepted as actually causing the globus sensation, however, GERD or acid reflux is among the leading factors attributed to its existence. Other suspect conditions are hypertensive upper esophageal sphincter pressure, sinusitis, overclosure of the bite, anterior cervical osteophytes, and certain psychological disorders.

Therefore, to treat globus pharyngis, doctors must systematically eliminate each of the potential causes through several forms of examination. This often includes a thorough ear nose and throat examination using an esophagoscopy (a small instrument with a light and camera that is inserted into the throat). It may also require a Barium swallow or counseling services.

In the case of acid reflux causing globus pharyngis, it is much more common in women than in men (though it is not unusual for men to experience it), and usually occurs between the ages of 40 and 60. Men who do suffer from globus pharyngis will often also have a mild case of dysphagia, which is the feeling of food getting stuck in the throat. More rarely, men will present with a severe case of dysphagia along with the globus pharyngis. Young men are more likely to suffer from both conditions at the same time.

Among the most effective treatment for the globus pharyngis condition are counseling -- to let the patient know that everything is alright and that they're not choking and their lives are not in any danger. Furthermore, treatment with rigid esophagoscopies will often ease if not eliminate the sensation.

To prevent the recurrence of globus pharyngis, treatment of GERD is recommended, as it is likely to be the cause in the first place. Speak to your doctor about your acid reflux and globus pharyngis symptoms to create a practical prevention strategy that can be worked into your lifestyle.

This will include instructions regarding changes to your diet both when you're preparing your foods at home and when you're eating out at restaurants, cafes, etc. You will likely be required to include some new foods into your diet, while reducing others that cause acid production to increase in your stomach, such as alcohol. You will also benefit from eating frequent, smaller meals throughout the day, instead of fewer large meals which cause your stomach to fill up and more acid to be produced, increasing the risk of reflux.<bio>Grab your free copy of Kathryn Whittaker's brand new Acid Reflux and GERD Newsletter - Overflowing with easy to implement methods to help you discover more about getting rid of the feeling of a lump in the throat and other acid reflux symptoms.</bio>

Have you been experiencing symptoms that you once thought could be indigestion, but are now thinking that perhaps the symptoms you are experiencing are related to acid reflux? The only way you can determine if what you are suffering is acid reflux is to know the symptoms of the digestive condition and seek the advice of your health care provider.

To start you on your path of discovery, the following is a list of all the possible symptoms of acid reflux:

Common symptoms:

Heartburn -- This is the most common acid reflux symptom and is characterized by a burning sensation that feels as though it is rising from the stomach or lower chest, and continues up towards the region of the neck. In many cases, the burning sensation typically begins behind the breastbone, and it may travel up to the throat.

However, heartburn can be severe in some people and spread to the neck, jaw, arms and back.

Chest Pain -- This may include chest pressure, dull chest discomfort, or severe burning pain that radiates across the mid chest. If you are suffering chest pain you should consult a physician immediately to rule out any heart problems.

Excessive salvation -- An increase in saliva production after eating may be the body's response to dealing with too much acid, as saliva helps to neutralize acid. Sometimes the stomach produces excessive acid which increases the risk of reflux.

Burning sensation in the throat -- This symptom generally causes a person to feel burning high in the neck close to the mouth, but it can happen in the lower region of the neck as well. It is common for the painful burning sensation to worsen when the person swallows.

This particular symptom is often brought on by irritation that occurs when stomach contents have been refluxed up the esophagus into the throat.

Painful swallowing -- This symptom usually follows the burning sensation in the throat.

Acid taste in the mouth/regurgitation -- With this symptom a person tastes a strong sour or bitter flavor in their mouth.

This usually occurs when acid has been refluxed up the esophagus into the back of the throat. Sometimes, along with the bitter taste, a person may also have food contents refluxed back into their mouth, which is better known as regurgitation.

Sore throat, bad breath, and dental erosion -- These symptoms typically occur as a result of a person suffering from acid being refluxed up into the throat and mouth.

Trouble swallowing -- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) is a symptom that occurs when food cannot pass normally from the mouth to the esophagus and to the stomach. Most people who experience dysphagia feel as if food is stuck in their throat, a choking sensation, pressure in their chest, or a burning sensation after eating. If you are experiencing dysphagia, you should seek the attention of your health care provider as soon as possible to have your condition evaluated, as this symptom is often associated with more severe complications involving the esophagus.

Less common symptoms:

Nausea and/or vomiting -- Very few gastroesophageal reflus disease (GERD) sufferers experience this symptom. Nevertheless, nausea does occur, especially in those who don't typically experience heartburn. When unexplained nausea and/or vomiting occur, GERD is usually one of the first conditions doctors suspect.

Chronic coughing -- A persistent dry cough can be a symptom of acid reflux that may occur if acid is irritating the windpipe or when acid is refluxed into the lungs, which is known as aspiration. Persistent coughing can cause hoarseness or asthma-like symptoms such as wheezing.

Severe chest pain -- sometimes severe chest pain can develop that feels like a heart attack. Though severe chest pain related to acid reflux is non-life threatening, if you experience what you feel is a heart attack, do not just assume it is acid reflux and seek medical attention immediately!

Keep in mind that almost all symptoms of acid reflux occur, and are at their worst, shortly after eating. However, it is also common for symptoms to be present when lying down or sleeping. Symptoms of acid reflux tend to come and go and may last for minutes, but can also remain for several hours. Symptoms usually go away when acid is neutralized by medication such as an antacid, or sometimes with a natural remedy.

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, you are likely suffering from acid reflux. If you are experiencing symptoms frequently, this could be an indication that you are suffering from GERD. In either event, it is best to speak to your health care provider about your symptoms and your concerns, so you can receive a proper diagnosis and discuss your treatment options.<bio>Grab your free copy of Kathryn Whittaker's brand new Acid Reflux and GERD Newsletter - and discover more about how to recognise acid reflux symptoms.
If you have been sleeping and suddenly you wake up because you cannot breathe, you probably have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea happens when air cannot get into your lungs when you are sleeping. Either your throat stays open and air cannot inhale or your throat will temporary collapse causing you to wake up without breath. This is a scary experience and can cause loss of sleep unless controlled. The sleep apnea usually happens when you are lying on your back, but there have been some cases where it can happen in any sleeping position.

What are some sleep apnea causes? One cause of sleep apnea is when your throat or tongue muscles relax more than normal. If you are sleeping on your back, your throat muscle could relax enough so that your mouth is agape. This will cause your tongue to relax also. Your tongue can slip upwards and backwards inside your mouth and cause you to stop breathing. You will awake gasping for air and feel like you have not breathed in awhile. If this is the cause of your sleep apnea, you could try not to sleep on your back. Sleep on your side or stomach. This could allow you to get a good night's sleep.

Your tonsils or adenoids being to large is another sleep apnea cause. Surgery is the best treatment if this is your problem, but ask your doctor before you make this decision. Uvulopalatopharryngoplasty is the name of the surgery that removes your tonsils or your uvula. Open your mouth and look into the mirror. The soft piece of tissue is your uvula. Run your finger in your mouth and feel the soft tissue around the uvula. That is another section that can be removed from your mouth so that it will not cover your bronchial tubes while sleeping. This surgery may not help all people with sleep apnea, but it can help some.

Another of the sleep apnea causes is that you are overweight. When you gain weight, you gain weight everywhere. Even the soft tissue in your mouth and at the back of your throat can have fatty deposits that can collapse and block your breathing while you are sleeping. You can get a mouth piece fitted and use this device is you have mild sleep apnea, the mouth piece will keep your tongue down and position your jaw so that the you will be able to breathe properly and get a good nights sleep.

The final cause for sleep apnea causes is that the size of your skull and neck bones is shaped in such a way that when you lie down the bones will force the muscles to close over the throat and your peaceful night's sleep will be ruined. You can ask your doctor to have a continuous airway device prescribed for you. This is an air mask that you wear while you sleep to keep fresh air going into your throat and lungs. This is for extreme cases of sleep apnea, and it could become quite costly. <bio>Do you suffer from sleep apnea?
When you are dealing with acid refluxing up into the esophagus, you know there can be many painful problems that follow. Acid can travel up to the top of the throat and may leak into the lungs, causing all kinds of breathing problems, and even lowering lung function. You may have problems with your sinuses, and you know all about the pain in the chest that comes with reflux. You may also notice that it hurts to swallow sometimes, and that can be due to damage in the upper esophagus and throat. When that happens, you want to find something for immediate relief, and that means finding good ways to soothe acid reflux throat irritation.

The first thing you should consider when thinking about acid reflux throat pain is that you have to get your reflux under control if you have not already done so. If you don't stop the root of your throat irritation, nothing is going to help you. The biggest problem you may have with your throat is that it hurts in the morning. This is because acid has leaked into the esophagus while you were sleeping, and has sat in your throat. Start taking medications or natural remedies to combat acid reflux, which ever you are more comfortable with using.

You will still experience some acid reflux throat irritation while you are working to get your reflux under control. That is when you can think about things that can soothe your throat until the acid is not doing any more damage. Once the acid is contained, your tissues will heal, but it might not happen right away. However, depending on the state of the damage, it might not mean complete healing.

Here are five tips for soothing your acid reflux throat pain and irritation:

- Think about minimizing your throat damage by elevating the head of your bed. Find something you can use to raise the top of your mattress so that the upper half of your body is elevated by at least six inches. You have to make sure you elevate the entire upper torso, and not just your head. This helps keeps acid down into the stomach and out of the esophagus while you are sleeping.

- Sometimes a sore throat can be aggravated by dry air. When sleeping, many of us breath through our mouths without realizing it. What might help is having a humidifier going while you are sleeping. This puts moisture into the air, and helps the throat from drying over night.

- There are a few drinks you can use to soothe your throat irritation in the morning. You can try gargling with salt water, or you can try any number of teas. You only need about a half a teaspoon of salt per tall glass of water for gargling, and when drinking tea, add some honey.

- You can also try zinc cough drops or lozenges.
