For those who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder -- or have a child who has been diagnosed -- there is an element of relief attached to the diagnosis. Finally, their struggles are validated and defined. And now that there's a name for all the symptoms, there comes the opportunity to treat the symptoms as well. For many who are in this situation, Attention Deficit Disorder drugs are the answer for which they've been searching.

Most often -- and most successfully -- stimulants are used as Attention Deficit Disorder drugs. Several have distinguished themselves as the more popular of the group.

Adderall -- a combination of several different stimulants -- is an oft prescribed Attention Deficit Disorder drug that helps to improve concentration and attentiveness in the patient, as well as reduce agitation.

Ritalin, one of the more commonly known Attention Deficit Disorder drugs, has the same effect as Adderall. It has proven very effective in alleviating hyperactivity and emotional outbursts. Other forms of this Attention Deficit Disorder drug are Concerta and Metadate.

Clonidin, most often used to treat hypertension, has shown some success as an Attention Deficit Disorder drug. Much as it lowers high blood pressure it is also beneficial in reducing agitation and hyperactivity.

Strattera is the first non-stimulant medication that has been approved in the treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder. The advent of Strattera is enormously encouraging as it indicates a possible future of other non-stimulant Attention Deficit Disorder drugs.

Some anti-depressants, such as Wellbutrin, have also been identified as having possible success as an Attention Deficit Disorder drug. However, most are not appropriate for children under eighteen years of age. Your medical professional will best be able to guide you in choosing the appropriate medications.

Information on these particular Attention Deficit Disorder drugs -- as well as many others -- can be found online. Be sure to thoroughly research any and all medications that are of interest to you. Not every Attention Deficit Disorder drug works for every patient. Be willing to put in the work to find the suitable therapy.

Finding the appropriate Attention Deficit Disorder drugs can sometimes be a journey; but not one to take alone. Proper medical supervision is paramount to finding the treatment that will work for your specific symptoms. Being an advocate for your own medical care -- or that of your child's -- will arm you with information and increase your chance of success in battling Attention Deficit Disorder. <bio>For easy to understand, in depth information about attention deficit disorder visit our ezGuide 2 http://attentiondeficitdisorder.ezguide2.com </bio>

ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) is an ailment that does not only concern children. Although signs of ADD are commonly manifested during childhood, it could also affect teenagers and adults. Symptoms would include hyperactivity, forgetfulness and lack of focus.

Individuals who are showing the symptoms of ADD should immediately consult their physicians. Doctors would immediately prescribed medication that can help control these symptoms. Study shows that ADD is attributed to the dysfunction of brain chemicals and prescribed medicines can help with such condition. Specific medicines can influence the make up of natural brain chemicals.

Here are some of the most common types of medical treatments for individuals who suffer from ADD:

• Dexamfetamine (Dexedrine) • Atomoxetine (Strattera) • Methylphenidate (Equasym, Concerta and Ritalin)

The above medicines basically affect the brain's noradrenaline and dopamine. These parts of the brain are responsible for the behavior and attention span of an individual. If an individual suffer from ADD, chances are these parts of the brain remain inactive. Medicines made for ADD could rouse activity in these areas.

Most of these medicines, particularly dexamfetamine and methylphenidate, are actually therapeutic stimulant medicines. These can improve an individual's sympathetic nervous system and are designed to improve alertness. Stimulants medicines have been used to treat ADD for more than three decades. For children one to six years old, atomoxetine is highly recommended.

ADD patients who take these medicines show less violent behaviour and a more controlled temperament. They are observed to have better concentration and listening skills. They begin to be less impulsive and think clearly before taking actions.

These behaviors when maintained would cause dramatic improvements after several months. ADD sufferers can be more effective in school. They can build more stable social relationships with their schoolmates, friends and family members. In the long run, these improvements would instill in them self-assurance to help them go on with their lives.

It is important to note that medicines don't guarantee a cure for ADD. They simply help reduce the symptoms. Although there are certain prescribed medicines to treat ADD, its effectiveness still largely depends on the individual who takes them. For prescribed medicines to be efficient, it should always be coupled with proper support and encouragement from the people that surrounds them. <bio>Jason Rickard is the owner of Your Favourite Shop - http://www.yourfavouriteshop.com - Offering White Noise and Relaxation CDs - Visit Hapa Health - http://www.hapahapa.com for more articles. </bio>

You had trouble concentrating, your work and social life was suffering and you couldn't keep it together long enough to hold on to regular a job for long.

One day, while surfing the web, you read an article on the Internet about adult attention deficit disorder, otherwise known as ADD and wondered if you had it.

You got checked out by prominent psychologist who specialized in adult ADD diagnosis and sure enough, you are suffering from the disorder.

The revelation is bitter sweet. On the one hand you now know what has been happening to you. On the other, you now have more questions than ever before.

This is normal, in fact, the next time you see your doctor, you should bring a list of questions with you that can put ADD in its proper perspective.

The list below is far from comprehensive, but is the fundamental questions hat one may ask to learn about more about living with this condition. Feel free to add a few questions of your own.

What causes ADD?

Even within the medical profession there is some debate as to the actual causes of ADD in children and adults. Some say that the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine is the culprit. This particular brain chemical control the cognitive functions of the brain and can greatly affect awareness, judgment memory and the ability to concentrate on tasks. Also, dopamine, another essential chemical, is very low in individuals with ADD. The fact that nearly 60 percent of ADD suffers have low dopamine count is very significant.

Indeed no one can argue with these facts.

Where the arguments come in is the how and why of these issues.

Some say it is a diet and nutrition problem, in fact, some studies have shown that the eradication of certain foods, like sugars, and refined and processed foods, decrease certain symptoms of ADD. Certain vitamins and minerals can also help stabilize symptoms.

This begs the question of whether or not the chemical imbalance that triggers ADD began with a nutrition deficiency.

Another argument is that there are structural differences in the brains make up that can cause ADD. In a small percentage of ADD victims, the forebrain, or he part that control our thought emotional and behavior are smaller than normal. This could influence certain behaviors causing not only the chemical imbalances but he problems that regularly manifest in the lives of people with ADD.

What ADD treatments are right for me?

The answer to this question will largely depend on the individual. For instance smokers will have to stay way from certain medications that may not be prescribed for fear of health risks.

ADD suffers who manifest symptoms of clinical depression may be given Prozac. Stimulants like Ritalin Adderall or Strattera can also be prescribed, but not for people with a history of drug or alcohol abuse, as these items are highly addictive.

As stated earlier, diet and nutrition can play a major role in combating symptoms, so if are really serious about getting the ADD/ADHD monkey off of your back you may want to modify your dietary habits.

Can I control ADD?

The answer is yes and no. Will you ever be able to truly suppress it? No. ADD/ADHD is a constant condition and the battle is fought on a daily basis.

That said, you can mitigate symptoms with a combinations of medication and behavior modification.

Also, seeing a therapist may also help you not only lessen he symptoms of ADD and ADHD but can perhaps aid you in putting the disorder in perspective.

Being diagnosed with ADD doesn't have to be the end of the world. You are now armed with the knowledge and know the enemy you have to defeat. With the right impetus and tools at your side, you can embark on a healthier lifestyle with new goals and a brighter future, in spite of your ADD diagnosis.<bio>ADD and ADHD doctor provides solutions for situations that can prevent you from doing your best at work, school or in relationships.
Teens experiment with prescription drugs for many different reasons. Some teens think the drugs will help them to have more fun or to be happier, or lose weight. Because family members could have the prescription, these drugs can be easier to get than street drugs. Prescription drugs are very commonly sold on the street like other illegal drugs as well. Some teens even think a prescription drug, regardless of whom it was prescribed to be safer than an ordinary street drug.

Cynthia may take her brother's ADHD medicine to curb her appetite because she had been told how bad diet pills could be. Cynthia thought the ADHD drug would be safer. After all, it was prescribed by a doctor for her brother - - but not for her - - and not for the condition in which she is taking the ADHD drug.

Prescription drugs are only safe for the people who actually have prescriptions for them. A doctor has examined the person and told them exactly how to take the drug, and most likely, the person has also been told those things to avoid while taking the drug such as alcohol or other medications. Cynthia would most likely not have the same type of information and may combine this drug with another substance that could cause her significant health problems and/or even death.

Cynthia did not know that taking her brother's ADHD medicine was also illegal. Taking drugs without a prescription =96 or sharing a prescription drug with friends =96 is breaking the law.

There are three classes of most commonly used prescription drugs which include:

=95Opioids =95Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants =95Stimulants

Opioids include:

=95Oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin) and meperidine (Demerol)

Opiodis are prescribed to treat pain or relieve coughs or diarrhea.

Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants include:

=95Valium and Xanax

Medical uses of CNS drugs are to treat anxiety, tension, panic attacks and sleep disorders. Stimulants include:

=95Ritalin and Strattera

Stimulants are used to treat narcolepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, obesity and asthma. Drug abusers usually have trouble at school, at home, in relationships with friends or significant others and the law. A person abusing drugs is more likely to commit a crime or have an accident regardless of whether the drugs are prescribed medications or street drugs.

As with all types of drug abuse, using prescription drugs for the wrong reasons has serious health risks. A single dose of an opioid can lower breathing rate and even kill if taken by the wrong person in the wrong circumstances. These health risks are increased when taken with other substances such as alcohol, antihistamines, and CNS depressants. The most common result of prescription drug abuse is addiction.

Signs of prescription drug addiction:

=95The need to have a particular drug or substance =95Changes in mood, weight, or interests

There are two kinds of treatment for persons addicted to prescription drugs, they are:

=95Behavioral =95Pharmacological

Behavioral treatments teach people how to function without the drugs, how to handle cravings, how to avoid drugs and situations that could lead to drug use and preventing and handling relapses.

Pharmacological treatments involve giving a patient a special type of medication to help him or her overcome withdrawal symptoms and drug cravings.

If you are worried about becoming addicted to a drug prescribed for you, this most likely will not happen. Doctors know how much medication to prescribe so that you do not receive too much. The prescribed drug for you will be the correct amount and the drug will relieve your symptoms without making you addicted.

If a doctor prescribes a pain medication, stimulant or CNS depressant, follow the directions exactly. Keep all your doctor's appointments. Your doctor will monitor how well the medication works for you and will make necessary adjustments. Some medicines will need to be stopped or changed after a while so the person does not become addicted. Follow all the instructions given regarding drugs and activities you should avoid while taking your prescription medication. Never increase or decrease the dose of your medication without checking with your doctor first regardless of how you feel.

Disclaimer: These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
In the past, rowdy, disruptive children were often spanked or scolded, while their parents were looked upon with disdain. With increasing research in child behavior, as well as with more studies in how molecular imbalances can trigger certain kinds of behavior and movements, physicians and psychiatrists have found that such unfortunate parents and noisy children should be treated with consideration.

In fact, as you know from reading thus far, they have in fact given a name to such a phenomenon: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

ADHD, now considered as a developmental disorder, is caused by changes in brain molecule levels, which in turn can be caused by head trauma in the womb. This head or brain trauma may be physical in nature, or chemical, say, if the expectant mother ingested certain toxins.

Children with ADHD tend to be impulsive and forgetful. They are also hyperactive and easily distracted. Because the disorder persists into adulthood, more and more adults are finding that their distractibility is due to ADHD.

ADHD also has a strong genetic component, and can thus be inherited. ADHD can't be cured, and its symptoms can be eased only with a combination of behavioral modification, special education, parental support, lifestyle changes in the person suffering from the disorder, and special medications meant to target the central nervous system. Popular ADHD medications have been used to treat blood pressure disorders and narcolepsy, and they can include the popular Ritalin, Cylert, and Strattera.

After reading about these medications and reviewing opposing points of view amongst the medical and psychiatric communities, you must consider the consequences of taking ADHD medications in the long term even though it hasn't been thoroughly studied.

Many ADHD medications also have dangerous side effects. In general, they can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pains, constipation, cramps, insomnia, and depression. In extreme cases, some ADHD medications have exacerbated existing cardiovascular disorders, such as high blood pressure and heart conditions; or have worsened certain psychiatric disorders such as mania and psychosis.

There is another component to consider. That is ADHD medications work by increasing alertness and attention, and by decreasing restlessness. Because of these properties, people who don't suffer from ADHD can and do abuse the drug. For instance, some students believe that ADHD medications can make them perform better in school by focusing their attention.

The disorder itself is subject to controversy. Some psychiatrists and parents contend that the symptoms of ADHD can be surmounted and obliterated by the proper discipline; in some extremes, some people don't consider ADHD a disorder at all. Backed by scientific proof, however, other scientists and physicians believe that ADHD is a real disorder that can be eased, thanks to long-term medication.

Long-term medication, however, doesn't sit well with many people. In fact, some psychiatrists, physicians, and even parents of ADHD-affected children cite their positive experiences with holistic medicine and natural ADHD medications. Before using such medications or even recommending them, however, you must read as much as you can on what advantages and disadvantages they carry. Moreover, you should always consult with your physician on what options are available to you before plunging into any natural or holistic treatments.

There are many natural treatment regimens available for ADHD, but the most common so far is a change in diet. ADHD-friendly diets are generally free from stimulants, such as sugars and preservatives, all of which can exacerbate ADHD symptoms and even interfere with the effectiveness of ADHD medications. There are many names for such diets, but in summary, they recommend that junk foods be taken out totally. Some junk foods contain a chemical called tartrazine, which is used to color foods, and can increase hyperactivity.

Holistic medicine practitioners also recommend certain drinks to help calm adults suffering from ADHD. Instead of taking ADHD medications, adults are asked to take yoga classes, which can help them concentrate, as well as monitor their breathing patterns. Adults suffering from ADHD are also requested to drink calming beverages, such as chamomile tea, instead of relying on ADHD medications to calm them down.

Holistic medicine practitioners also recommend certain herbs that can be integrated into an ADHD-friendly diet. For instance, fresh lemon balm can induce calm; while ginkgo biloba tablets can increase concentration. Melatonin can also regulate the body's sleep cycles and induce relaxation while Saint John's Wort can ease depression without pushing the body into hyperactivity. People with ADHD are also encouraged to take vitamins to increase concentration. Such vitamins can include Vitamin B complex, Vitamin C, and Zinc.

Other techniques, such as massage, magnet therapy, and even acupuncture have been used to calm people with ADHD and regulate their body cycles. These are only a few natural techniques that you may want to consider if you are looking for ways to cure ADHD. Always be on the alert for new research in the field of ADHD treatment, and be sure that you thoroughly and truly understand the underlying principles governing the use of your natural treatment of choice before you or your child use it to combat ADHD. <bio>Ainuddin Mohamad is the Webmaster of http://HealthyPages.info </bio>
