While there are a variety of stomach ulcer symptoms experienced by many, this common disease attacks millions of Americans each and every year.

The stomach ulcer often presents itself in folks that take anti-inflammatory medications, smoke or drink alcohol. There is still some controversy as to whether stress causes stomach ulcers or not.

The wicked stomach ulcer often presents as a burning, gnawing sensation in the pit of the stomach that can last for up to three hours.

Many of those who experience this phenomenon mistakenly think it is nothing more than hunger pains, heartburn or even basic indigestion. Unfortunately this can often cause patients to delay seeking treatment since they brush it off as basic health issues and nothing more.

Stomach ulcer pain often occurs after a meal, is located in the upper abdomen and is often relieved by resting, taking antacids or having a small drink of milk. Weight loss may even be seen in those suffering extensively from a stomach ulcer since they actually avoid eating in hopes of avoiding pain.

Nausea and vomiting may also be seen for those suffering from stomach ulcers. You might also see black, tarry stools or stools containing dark red blood. This is an indication that your stomach ulcer is bleeding and this is a serious health complication and may require abdominal surgery.

Stomach ulcer symptoms may be treated with basic antacids or an even stronger medication, which requires a prescription. Stomach ulcer medications such as Protonix can actually help to reduce the acid production in your stomach and many find it useful in the treatment of stomach ulcers.

This is not a health issue which you can ignore since the stomach ulcer can literally erode the protective lining of the stomach. Some times your physician may prescribe a medication which forms a protective barrier over the lining of your stomach and gives your stomach ulcer a chance to heal.

When trying to recover your health, it is important that you take the time to eat balanced nutritious meals, limit your alcohol, tobacco usage and caffeine intake, as well as anti-inflammatory medications if at all possible.

There are several medical tests that your physician may utilize in order to definitively diagnose your stomach ulcer. It is important to have a diagnosis that is based on solid evidence so that you can get the treatment you need.

Your health depends on it and it is ridiculous to ignore the stomach ulcer symptoms you are enduring. Talk with your physician to see what help is available to you. Here's to better healthy days and stomach ulcers that heal. <bio>For more important information on health topics sure to visit http://www.the-health-hub.com where you will find information and resources on personal health such as aches and pains, conditions and diseases, diet and nutrition, fitness and many other articles that you can view at http://the-health-hub.com </bio>

Affecting millions of Americans each year, a stomach ulcer is a raw, open area in the normal lining of the stomach. Stomach ulcers get their particular name depending on the exact location of the ulcer. For example, a duodenal or peptic ulcer is a stomach ulcer found in the first foot of small intestines past the stomach. A gastric ulcer in located inside the stomach itself. Although duodenal or peptic ulcers are almost always benign, it is important to remember that gastric or stomach ulcers can be malignant. Close medical management is critical.

A protective layer of mucus producing cells prevent the stomach from being destroyed by normal digestive juices and stomach acids. However, when there is a break in that protective layer trouble can occur. A stomach ulcer occurs when the gastric or intestinal mucosal lining of the stomach is destroyed by hydrochloric acid, an acid which is normally present in the digestive juices of the stomach.

Another cause of ulcers, particularly gastric and duodenal ulcers, can be a bacterial infection known as Helicobacter pylori or H. pylori. The helicobacter pylori bacterium may be transmitted from person to person through contaminated food and water and is treated with antibiotics.

One of the major symptoms of a stomach ulcer is pain, more specifically pain that feels much like a gnawing or burning pain in the middle upper abdomen often occurring some two to three hours after a meal. Often this pain is mistaken for heartburn or even hunger. Pain from a stomach ulcer may awaken you at night and may be relieved with food or milk.

Stomach ulcers are treated with prescription strength medications designed to reduce stomach acid, to protect the stomach lining and to treat the H. pylori bacteria, if it is present.

There are several medications that are commonly used to treat stomach ulcers. If the intent is to reduce stomach acid, then your physician may prescribe medications such as H2-Receptor antagonists like Nizatidine (Axid®), Cimetidine (Tagamet®), Ranitidine (Zantac®), or Famotidine (Pepcid®). Also used to reduce stomach acids are medications called Proton pump inhibitors. These types of medications include Omeprazole (Prilosec®), Esomeprazole (Nexium®), Lansoprazole (Prevacid®), or Pantoprazole (Pantoloc®). Medications used to protect the lining of the stomach include over-the-counter medications such as Rolaids or Tums or medications such as sucralfate, which forms a protective barrier over the site of the ulcer to help it to heal.

Stomach ulcers are certainly painful and can lead to additional complications such as bleeding. They require aggressive treatment directed by your healthcare provider in order to resolve the current ulcer and attempt to prevent future recurrences. <bio>For more important information on stomach pain be sure to visit http://a-stomach-pain.com where you will find advice and tips on common stomach pain causes such as acid stomach ulcer, Crohn's disease, and other articles that you can view at http://www.a-stomach-pain.com </bio>

Stomach pain that is associated with ulcers knows no boundaries. They are capable of afflicting any age, and either gender at any time.

Although generally not initially considered a serious health condition, ulcers certainly should not go untreated. Peptic ulcers are lesions located in the stomach, the esophagus, or the duodenum that left untreated can lead to very serious complications such as a perforated ulcer or even a bleeding ulcer that could become life threatening.

Essentially what happens with an ulcer is the thin protective mucus lining that protects the intestinal lining breaks down and allows bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori to attack the tissue and cause a sore to develop. So, the combination of the Helicobacter Pylori bacteria and natural stomach acids set the stage for a peptic ulcer to develop.

Stomach ulcers are extremely common in today's society. Each year millions of Americans are diagnosed with some form and severity of an ulcer - with research indicating that smoking, caffeine, and alcohol consumption certainly being heavy contributors to this disorder.

The warning signs of the onset of an ulcer are a sharp burning sensation in your stomach and even up into your esophagus. Many times the pain will surface at some time after a meal. Remember, consuming food will trigger digestive fluids (acids) that will come in contact with the sore (ulcer) and begin causing some level of discomfort and pain.

Over the counter relief in the form of antacids have long been the choices for temporary relief from the pain of a stomach ulcer. Although the antacids can help neutralize the acidic fluids that your body naturally produces and provide some relief, be advised that these same antacids can also affect the absorption of other medications. Because of this make sure you consult with your doctor before you consider embarking on any self treatment program.

Ulcers are no different from any other chronic or persistent pain you may being experiencing. If this is the case with your stomach pain, see your doctor. Certainly the passing of blood through a bowel movement is a huge red flag (that could be a symptom several health problems) that you should address immediately.

Regardless, of what you think may or may not be causing your stomach pain, take the time early to consult with your doctor. Today, the vast majority of ulcers does not require any type of invasive medical procedure and can be controlled or even eliminated through diet or doctor prescribed medication. But the key is early evaluation and diagnosis. <bio>For more important information on http://www.a-stomach-pain.com.
A peptic ulcer is a condition is which a lesion or open sore develops within the stomach lining because the natural protective lining of the digestive tract has been broken down.

A stomach ulcer is a very well know term that most of us have heard of. Contrary to popular belief it is not spicy food that actually causes the peptic ulcer, rather the condition is brought on by a particular type of bacteria.

Peptic ulcers gain momentum in you digestive tract primarily due to an insufficient supply or production of mucus. Mucus is your body's natural coating of your its tissue that offers protection. Also, your body may not be producing natural bicarbonates that are chemically the opposite of acid (in this case your natural stomach acids) that help neutralize the effects of your natural stomach acids.

When these natural defenses fall short, the acid that your stomach naturally uses in the digestive process will become an irritant to the tissue of your stomach and/or digestive tract and ultimately can lead to sores or small openings developing. It is the development of these sores or openings that radiate the stomach pain.

The physical location of the (peptic) sore itself determines the actual definition assigned (whether in the stomach, the small intestine, or the esophagus), but it is an ulcer nonetheless.

The leading medical cause of this ulcer is from a bacterium called Heliobacter Pylori. This particular bacteria works to weaken the stomach's natural defenses and as such allows the natural stomach acid to come in contact with the digestive walls that will eventually work to cause the damage to the soft tissue.

For your body, gastric acids and pepsin are necessary in the digestive process. However, as you can imagine (or have experienced) an over production of these fluids can cause the damages known better as ulcers.

Anyone who has experienced the pain of an ulcer is quite familiar with the 'burning' sensation associated with an ulcer. You may have initially associated the cause of the ulcer with foods that you ate, but in reality it is the food that you consume that naturally triggers your digestive acids, which in turn (not so gently) reminds you that there is an open sore in your digestive tract.

Research has shown that people who smoke and/or consume alcohol increase their risk of developing peptic ulcers because of the increased production of digestive acids that are associated with these lifestyle activities.

Remember that a peptic ulcer is a sore of wound to your digestive system and should not be left untreated or ineffectively treated, as serious complication can develop as a result.

If you are feeling persistent pain and burning sensations in your digestive tract particularly after eating, or perhaps you've noticed these symptoms after as a result of being on some type of medication, you should consult with your doctor for a complete examination and diagnosis that in most cases can lead to an effective treatment. <bio>For more important information on http://www.a-stomach-pain.com.
Signs of a stomach ulcer can include nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain just beneath the ribcage, indigestion, vomiting, symptoms of anemia, weight loss, and blood present in vomit or bowel movements.

If you experience these symptoms for any length of time, it is important to seek medical attention. These are not symptoms to be ignored.

Stomach ulcers occur when there is a break in the tissue lining of the stomach. These ulcers normally occur in the stomach or the first part of the small intestine that leads out of the stomach, called the duodenum.

Commonly stomach ulcers are related to extreme stress, smoking and diet. Any of which are factors over which we have control, making it possible to heal a ulcer; if you work to eliminate some of the contributing factors that can lead to the development.

If you begin noticing the signs of a stomach ulcer, these signs should not be ignored. In fact, an appointment with your doctor should be your course of action if these symptoms persist.

In order for your doctor to make a specific diagnosis, several tests may be ordered to help determine the exact cause of your stomach pain.

One of the first tests your physician may order is the barium swallow or upper GI series of X-rays. This test allows your doctor to identify and locate any ulcers and determine its type and severity.

The barium swallow test requires you to drink a "barium milkshake." This thick "shake" contains a liquid that will light up on an x-ray. The barium will light up on the x-ray making it easier for your physician to see exactly what is going on and causing your pain.

You are normally asked to eat only bland, easily digestible foods for two or three days before the test. After drinking the chalky liquid, you will be asked to lie down on a tilting examining table, which as it tilts, evenly distributes the barium around your upper digestive tract and allows the x-ray to capture images at different angles.

Treatment options for stomach ulcers can consist of over the counter medications, prescription medications, modifying your diet, perhaps a lifestyle change that includes the addition of exercise and reduction of stress, and as a last result, surgery.

In summary, any signs of stomach ulcers should not be ignored as the delay in diagnosis and treatment could lead to further complications. It is important to understand, however, that in many cases you have control over the factors that contribute to stomach ulcers. <bio>For more important information on http://www.a-stomach-pain.com.
Peptic Ulcer Disease is a condition where a lesion or open sore develops with the stomach lining because the natural protective lining of a person's digestive tract has broken down.

Although many people have heard of stomach ulcers and contrary to popular belief spicy food does not actually cause a peptic ulcer. Normally such ulcers are caused by a particular type of bacteria instead.

Unfortunately most peptic ulcers get to work on the digestive tract quickly because there is insufficient mucus being produced and this is a natural coating for the body's tissue and thus offers it protection from bacteria etc. Also in some cases it may be because a person's body is not producing enough natural bicarbonates and which are able to neutralize the effects of the acids produced by their stomach.

For those whose natural defenses fall short during such a time will find that the acid used in the stomach during the digestive processes will cause irritation to the stomach tissue or the digestive tract and this will lead to sores or lesions developing in this area. It is when the sores or lesions are developing that the person will begin to feel pain radiated from their stomach.

However the location of any ulcer really determines the actual definition assigned to it so those found in the stomach, small intestine or esophagus are commonly known as peptic ulcers.

The bacteria which is normally the cause of a peptic ulcer is called Heliobacter Pylori and this bacteria works by weakening a person's natural defenses in their stomach and as such allows stomach acid to come into contact with the person's digestive walls and this will result in damage to this soft tissue. Although gastric acids and pepsin are important in a body's digestive process, unfortunately the over production of such fluids can cause the damage that is commonly known as ulcers.

For anyone who suffers from ulcers that will often experience a "burning sensation" and usually you may associate the cause of this ulcer with certain foods that you have recently ate, but in reality the food you eat will trigger the digestive acids to work which in turn will remind you that you have an ulcer in your digestive tract.

Research carried out has shown that people who either smoke or consume alcohol are at a higher risk of developing a peptic ulcer due to the increased production of digestive acids which are associated with the kind of life that they are leading.

It is vital that a peptic ulcer when diagnosed should not be left untreated as it can lead to more serious complications in the future. So if at any time in the future you find yourself suffering from a persistent pain or burning sensation in your digestive tract after eating, or after you have been of a certain type of medication then it is important that you doctor to have a complete examination carried out and a diagnosis can be made, which will then lead to effective treatment for the condition. <bio>Lee Dobbins writes for http://ulcers.health-g8way.com where you can learn more about treating ulcers including peptic ulcer disease. </bio>

At one point or other in our lives we have all experienced some form of heartburn. The effects of heartburn may be mild or frequent and painful, but they are symptoms that we can ease. There is however, an unfortunate side effect that can occur due to frequent heartburn irritations. This complication is a heartburn ulcer.

What exactly is heartburn ulcer? A heartburn ulcer occurs when the lining of the esophagus deteriorates due to the effects of the stomach acid that has been repeatedly refluxed into the esophagus. Due to the corrosive effect the acid has on the esophagus lining,a hole is burned through the lower section of the esophagus.

Heartburn ulcers are usually located in the lower section of the esophagus and they are sometimes connected to GERD disease. Gerd is chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease. There is a possibility that someone told you that heartburn ulcers are contagious. This is a myth. You cannot catch heartburn ulcers from anyone. A heartburn ulcer is usually a symptom of another problem.

As heartburn ulcers erode the lining of the esophagus, there is a strong possibility of bleeding occurring. This condition may lead to iron deficiency anemia. So what are the causes of heartburn ulcer?

The main cause of heartburn ulcers is the destruction of the esophagus lining by the H. Pyloridus bacteria. H. Pyloridus bacteria are usually found in the stomach. When the stomach acid reflux back into the esophagus the H. Pyloridus bacteria is usually brought into contact with the esophagus. Repeated acid reflux will bring a high amount of stomach H. Pyloridus bacteria into the esophagus where it will be strong enough to begin eating away at the esophagus lining. Paving the way for a heartburn ulcer.

There are other causes that can develop heartburn ulcers. These include the continuous usage of anti-inflammatory medications, smoking and use of cigarettes and nicotine products as well as tobacco chewing.

The digestive disorders of GERD and Bulimia are also thought to have connections with heartburn ulcer.

For a person suffering from a heartburn ulcer how can it be diagnosed? Your doctor will refer you to a gastroenterologist. A barium x-ray or endoscopy will be taken to see if you do indeed have a heartburn ulcer.

The main complications that heartburn ulcer sufferers have, are bleeding and perforation of the esophagus. Luckily heartburn ulcers can be treated. The underlying cause of the problem must first be found and then treatment may be started. Some of the common treatments that are used are antibiotics to eradicate H. pyloridus.

Anti-reflux medication, and the elimination of risk factors and prevention of complications must also be taken into account when medication is being prescribed for heartburn ulcers. For more information on heartburn ulcers, it is best if you talk with your doctor, as this can be a very serious condition. On a parting note, also try to avoid the twin evils of stress and anxiety. They too will aid in giving you a heartburn ulcer. <bio>Author's sites: http://www.easyhomeremedy.com , http://www.myanxietyguide.com , http://www.home-remedies-for-heartburn.com </bio>

You probably spend more time thinking about your stomach -- what to feed it, when to feed it, how to keep it from sticking out so much -- than any other organ. A minor problem with another part of your body might go unnoticed, but when there's something wrong with your stomach, you know it immediately.

Consequently, ailments like acid reflux and ulcers get a lot of attention. They're sort of "Everyman" diseases, striking old and young, rich and poor, many times regardless of lifestyle (though some lifestyle choices can make them worse). Since both acid reflux and ulcers are caused by acid, it's natural to think one will inevitably lead to the other. But that's not necessarily the case.

You see, acid reflux is the result of acid from the stomach rising up into the esophagus. This can happen because the stomach is over-full and the acid is forced upward, or because there's been some damage to the sphincter that separates the stomach from the esophagus. Contrary to popular belief, acid reflux does NOT happen because the stomach has produced too much acid. The amount of acid is irrelevant. It's the fact that the acid is bubbling up into the esophagus, where it doesn't belong, that's the problem.

Ulcers, on the other hand, are usually caused by infection from a bacterium called H. pylori. It's commonly believed that ulcers are the product of stress, but that's a myth. Stress can make the symptoms worse, or make the sufferer more aware of the symptoms, but stress does not cause the ulcer out of nowhere. You could be the most stressed-out person in the world and you'd never get an ulcer if it weren't for that H. pylori bacterium or some other specific ulcer-causing substance.

So while ulcers and acid reflux both involve stomach acid, their causes -- and thus their treatments -- are very different. Having acid reflux will not cause you to get an ulcer, too. If you have both, treating the ulcer infection will take care of that problem, but it will do nothing for the acid reflux. That'll require its own separate treatment.

As with so many health problems, both ulcers and acid reflux can often be prevented through healthy diet and exercise. For acid reflux, it's important to avoid over-eating and eating fatty foods. Don't lie down right after a big meal, so eat meals early in the evening to give your food a chance to digest before bedtime. Remember that chocolate and peppermint (among other foods) can trigger reflux, as can alcohol, caffeine and tobacco. Losing excess weight and exercising regularly can also do wonders for preventing reflux.

Most of those precautions work for ulcers, too. In addition, aspirin and ibuprofen can cause ulcers, so taking those drugs as sparingly as possible may help prevent them. And get this: People with type O blood are 35 percent more likely to get ulcers than people with other types. So if you're an O, you would do well to take extra precautions.

Ultimately, there is little connection between ulcers and acid reflux other than the fact that they both have to do with stomach acid. Luckily, a healthy lifestyle can reduce the chances of getting either ailment, and there are adequate treatments available in case your precautions fail. For the most part, if you take care of your stomach, your stomach will take care of you. <bio>Kathryn Whittaker has an interest in Acid Reflux.
The term peptic ulcer is referred to both, gastric and duodenal ulcers. It is believed to have occurred due to an infection by a bacterium known as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). This corkscrew-shaped bug lives in the inner lining of the stomach causing peptic ulcer. If peptic ulcer is located in the stomach it is called gastric ulcer.

- Some of the common symptoms of peptic ulcer are:

• Constant pain in the abdomen - which mainly is a duodenal symptom. This pain occurs within one or two hours after meals and also when the stomach is empty. This pain lasts for several minutes or hours and you can get relief by eating or having any antacid medicines.

• Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and losing weight in the same process is another sign.

- Complications in Peptic Ulcer

• These complications have certain symptoms which need immediate care namely hemorrhage of the ulcer causing bleeding. This kind of bleeding occurs without pain making it very hard to detect. It may slowly enter the digestive tract leading to anemia. If the bleeding is fast it may be more dangerous. The symptoms include weakness, blood vomiting and dark-colored stools.

• The other complication is pyloric stenosis (obstruction) where in the valve at the bottom of the stomach leading towards duodenum becomes narrow. This complication obstructs the transition of the content from the stomach into the intestine. This increases abdominal pain, vomiting and causes bloating.

• Perforation occurs when the ulcer completely erodes the stomach or duodenal wall. This leads to leakage of acidic contents into the abdominal cavity causing acute peritonitis (infection of the abdominal cavity). You may suffer one of the worst kinds of abdominal pains during such times and it may worsen with any type of movement. This can be fatal if medical treatment is not given immediately.

Home remedies for Peptic Ulcer

• Avoid smoking, alcohol, drinking caffeinated food products like coffee and coke.

• Salt and sugar intake should be lessened, as it aggravates this problem furthermore.

• Avoid NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like aspirin, ibuprofen and many more which does not help in the healing process of peptic ulcers.

• You can use dried banana powder (Musa paradisiaca) to treat ulcers. Take two capsules of dried raw banana powder four times a day for eight weeks and see the improvement.

• Calendula plant is also known to have anti-inflammatory and healing properties which have been used as an age-old medicine for peptic ulcers. If capsules are available, have two, three times a day. Or you can use 2 to 3 tsp of calendula juice.

• Marshmallow (Althea officinalis) root extract is rich in protein and mucilage-carbohydrate which helps in production of a new tissue. It also helps in removing acid from your body.

• Papaya Leaf is a great ingredient for digestion. It digests the dead tissue which helps in treating many skin diseases, wounds and ulcers. It has the property to protect the stomach mucosa from any kind of damage and ulcer formation.

• People suffering from this disease should do yoga asanas too which would minimize the peptic ulcer problem. Asanas like Vajrasana, Padmasana, Pawanmuktasana, Bhujangasana and Paschimothasana can surely prove to be very useful to deal with this problem.

Warning: The reader of this article should exercise all precautionary measures while following instructions on the home remedies from this article.
Duodenum is a small lining that connects the stomach to the small intestine. When this lining gets inflamed or eroded it causes the condition known as duodenal ulcer (DU). Duodenal Ulcers are located in the duodenum tract. This type of an ulcer is three times more frequent in comparison to gastric ulcer. It has been said that this ulcer is caused mainly due to too much acid from the stomach. But studies have shown that is not the case. Duodenum surface and tissue is protected by the use of chemicals and mucus produced by duodenum. Duodenum ulcer occurs when this protection breaks due to the acid.

This ulcer is also caused by an infection with a bacterium called H. pylori. This bacterium affects the lining of the duodenum which makes way for the acid to cause inflammation and ulcers. The anti-inflammatory medicines also cause duodenal ulcers. Medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen and diclofenac including many others taken for arthritis, muscular pain are another reason for this problem. One of the rare causes is the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome which creates too much acid in the stomach causing duodenal ulcer.

Some of the common symptoms of duodenal ulcers are pain caused in the upper abdomen, mostly occurring before the meals or if you are going through one of the hungry pangs. The pain subsides once you eat your food or take antacid medicines. Other signs are bloating, barfing and feeling sick. Over eating can complicate things further by causing more pain. This problem can take a turn for worse when there is bleeding from the ulcer or when the ulcer penetrates the duodenum wall causing pain and need for doctors help.

- Home Remedies for Duodenal Ulcer

• Mix one dessertspoon of slippery elm bark powder in cold chamomile tea. Drink this everyday for next 12 weeks. Slippery Elm provides a protective lining to the mucosal lining of the gastro intestinal system. This 12-week program would heal any kind of infection.

• Make a mixture by using agrimony, chamomile, dandelion, gentian, rue, and uva ursi with Bach Flower Remedies Willow (found at your local chemist shop) and vine. One should have 20 drops of this mixture three times a day continuously followed by a cup of Dandelion Tea.

• Quit smoking and drinking as it increases your chances to develop ulcers.

• Avoid stress as it affects all parts of your life which in turn results in ulcers.

• You can have a tablet form of licorice root which helps to remove acid but may raise your blood pressure.

• Drink chamomile tea to minimize the duodenal ulcer effect.

• Reduce your fatty food intake as well as caffeinated drinks like coke and coffee.

• Foods which are high in soluble fiber such as oat bran, barely, seed husks, flaxseed, lentils, peas, soymilk, soy products, carrots, beans and many more are very effective in reducing the risk of duodenal ulcer.

• Increase your vitamin A intake by consuming fruits and vegetables like Tomatoes, Cantaloupes, Watermelon, Peaches, Kiwi, Oranges, and Blackberries to lower the risk of duodenal ulcer.

Warning: The reader of this article should exercise all precautionary measures while following instructions on the home remedies from this article.
In the past people suffering from peptic ulcers were restricted from taking small amount of bland food and milk regularly. Researches however showed that this in no way helps in decreasing the recurrence of ulcers. However, a diet rich of fibers may minimize the chances of developing ulcers, and will help in fast healing of the existing ones. In particular, fiber found in fruits, vegetables are very protective, and with vitamin contained in most of these foods, the benefits are increased.

There are some evidences that show that exercise helps in reducing the risk of ulcers in some people. In a study in 2000, it was found that although exercise is helpful for men but it has null effect on ulcer development in women. Stress relief programs are not known to have an impact on ulcer healing. However, they have other health benefits that are useful.

Treat Ulcer with Vitamin A

When it comes to ulcers, the main role of Vitamin A is to protect the lining of the stomach so that the sore, if in case it developed already, won't get worse.

Vitamin A also allows for the speedy healing of the affected areas of the small intestines. Patients suffering from peptic ulcer are advised to take foods rich in Vitamin A and dietary fiber such as fruits and vegetables.

Doctors would normally recommend peptic ulcer patients an initial dosage of 25,000 IU of Vitamin A daily for an entire week.

Then the dosage is reduced to just 10,000 IU everyday for maintenance. However, pregnant women or those who want to get pregnant are advised not to take more than 5,000 IU of Vitamin A daily.
Vitamin C can help Ulcer

Vitamin C works favorably for the patients of peptic ulcer because it directly inhibits the growth the very bacteria that cause the disease.

Also, if the H. pylori bacteria were abundant, it would directly impair the body's absorption of Vitamin C. When this happens, the patient has higher risks of developing stomach cancers from the condition that merely started as peptic ulcer.

The normal dosage of Vitamin C for peptic ulcer patients is 1,000 mg taken twice a day. Because Vitamin C could induce diarrhea, the dosage can also be taken in a buffered form.

A hormone found in the brain that has a role in sleep is known as Melatonin. Researchers have found that the hormone might have properties that will help in preventing ulcers along with reduction in acid secretion and an improvement in blood flow. Until now, it is not known if it will benefit people with peptic ulcers but it might well do so. However, high doses of Melatonin have adverse affects like mental impairment, severe headache and nightmares.

In the past anti acids were the drugs that were preferred for ulcers but now it has been replaced with proton pump inhibitors. There are natural alternatives that work really well to heal ulcer and can be used with other prescribed drugs. Researchers claim Deglycrrhizinated licorice {DGL) as a good complement to the therapeutic measures recommended by your health care professional. DGL works positively by addressing the underlying factors causing ulcers rather than trying to hide the symptoms. DGL works by promoting the natural defense mechanism that is already present in our body to fight against ulcers. Other drugs that are also beneficial in curing ulcer carry some side effects along with them but DGL has no side effect.

Therefore, although there is no sure cure for ulcers but choices available for getting rid of it are many and a proper treatment will see you through. The patient must consult the doctor for proper treatment and correct guidance. If the patient reaches at the early stage, ulcers can be easily cured with fewer complications.<bio>Jack L Bloom is the owner of The Vitamins and Supplements adviser.
Persons who treat themselves with antacids may do themselves more harm than good. Though they may get initial relief because the tablet neutralises the acid, the stomach responds by producing even more acid because the basic cause of the hyperacidity has not been dealt with. Ulcers can be best treated by natural methods.

Diet is of utmost importance in the treatment of ulcer. The diet should be so arranged as to provide adequate nutrition to afford rest to the disturbed organs to maintain continuous neutralisation of the gastric acid, to inhibit the production of acid and to reduce mechanical and chemical irritation.

Milk, cream, butter, fruits and fresh, raw and boiled vegetables and natural foods are the best diet for an ulcer patient. The fruits recommended are banana, mango, musk melon and dates. Such a diet will progressively reduce the acidity in the stomach. A low-salt diet can greatly help in curing hyperacidity and ulcers.

The use of banana and plantain is considered highly beneficial in the treatment of peptic ulcer. These fruits are antiulcerogenic and have long been used in folk medicine to treat ulcers. They are said to contain an unidentified compound called, perhaps jokingly, Vitamin U (against ulcers). According to British pharmacist Dr. Ralph Best of the University of Aston in Birmingham, bananas stimulate proliferation of cells and mucus that form a stronger barrier between the stomach lining and corrosive acid. Plantains should, however, be cooked before. eating because they are too hard and tough to eat raw. Green plantains are considered a more potent medicine for healing ulcers than ripe ones.

Cabbage is another useful remedy for peptic ulcers. It contains antiulcer drugs. In a research study, Dr. Garnett Chenery, a professor of medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine in the 1950s, demonstrated that just 850 ml of fresh cabbage juice every day relieved pain and healed both gastric and duodenal ulcers better and faster than standard treatments did. In a test of 55 patients who drank cabbage juice, 95 per cent felt better within two to five days. X-rays and gastroscopy revealed a rapid healing of gastric ulcers in only one-quarter of the average time. The duodenal ulcers of patients fed cabbage also healed in one-third the usual time. Cabbage can also be boiled in water and this water taken twice daily after cooling.

Almond milk made from blanched almonds in a blender is also beneficial in the treatment of ulcer. It binds the excess of acid in the stomach and supplies high-quality protein. Raw goat's milk is also highly beneficial. It actually helps to heal peptic ulcer.

Raw fruits and vegetables should be avoided for a few weeks, as many of these are especially irritating. Potatoes and squashes are, however, well-tolerated. All sour fruits should be avoided, especially citrus fruits.

Certain foods do not agree in cases of gastric complaints and should be eliminated. These include fried and greasy foods which are always difficult to digest; flesh foods which require a high amount of acid in the stomach for their digestion and acid causes more pain and flatulence in the sensitive stomach; condiments, preserves and sugar which are stomach irritants; and tea, coffee, tobacco and alcohol which create an acidic reaction in the stomach. The healing capacity and vitality of the body will increase if these harmful and unsuitable foods are avoided. <bio>Author's sites: http://www.easyhomeremedy.com , http://www.myanxietyguide.com , http://www.home-remedies-for-heartburn.com </bio>

GERD is a severe condition where the esophagus has become highly inflamed due to frequent acid reflux entering the esophagus.

Pepcid AC belongs to a group of drugs that are known as Histamine blockers, or H2 blockers, and is an over the counter drug that is used mainly to relieve and prevent future heartburn, acid indigestion and a sour stomach.

You should not expect Pepcid AC to begin with to relieve your heartburn problems immediately. It may take at least several days for the medicine to take effect. While you are using Pepcid AC, other antacids maybe used at the same time. Pepcid AC should be taken with water at least 1 hour before a meal that might cause heartburn. There is a course of treatment that you need to continue for Pepcid AC to be effective. Should you miss a dose and the time is near your next dosage, then you must only take the upcoming one tablet.

The most common side effect that you can experience is headaches. There are other less known side effects. A few of these are acne, breast development in males, depression, sleepiness and others.

For those heartburn sufferers who may have had an allergic reaction to Pepcid AC, or a another type of H2 blocker such as Tagamet, Zantac or Axid then you should not take Pepcid AC. Make sure that your doctor is aware of any drug reactions you have experienced due to this or similar drugs. Also those who have or suspect they may have stomach cancer should understand that Pepcid AC may relieve the cancer symptoms without curing the stomach cancer. Your doctor will be careful to rule out this possibility.

You need to take the recommended dose of tablets that your doctor will inform you of. You should not take more than 2 Pepcid AC tablets a day continuously for more than two weeks. This must be understood and followed unless you have other directions from your doctor.

Pregnant women need to understand that the effects of Pepcid AC are not known with regards to pregnancy. Like all medications it is best to consult with your doctor before you start using this drug. Your doctor will know if the use of this drug will be of help to you or if using it will cause harm, especially if you are pregnant. <bio>Author's sites: http://www.easyhomeremedy.com , http://www.myanxietyguide.com , http://www.home-remedies-for-heartburn.com </bio>

Treatment for heart burn and peptic ulcers has changed dramatically in the past few years. Now, antacids, histamine blockers, and proton pump blockers are being used as standard ulcer therapy. These medicines don't address the root of the problem, but rather just block the ulcers' effects. Luckily, there is a natural supplement that effectively stimulates the body's normal defense mechanisms, preventing ulcer formation and promoting true healing.

Peptic ulcers are sores that form from acid and pepsin in the lining of the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine. Peptic ulcers are very common, as one in every 10 Americans develops an ulcer at some time in his or her life. The most common type of peptic ulcers occurs in the duodenum and tends to heal more quickly than stomach ulcers. Stomach ulcers are also more likely to recur. Some individuals with peptic ulcers have very mild symptoms while others have no symptoms at all. Still, for some pain is the most common symptom. The pain associated with an ulcer may be dull and gnawing, or burning and crampy. The pain may also come and go, for several days or weeks and occur two to three hours after eating or in the middle of the night. For some people, the pain may be relieved by food. Other symptoms of a peptic ulcer include weight loss, poor appetite, bloating, burping, nausea, vomiting.

The cause of ulcers is no longer blamed solely on stress, spicy foods, alcohol consumption, gastric acid production, or heredity. Rather most peptic ulcers are now known to be caused mainly by a bacterial infection of H. pylori. The use of over-the-counter and prescription painkillers including ibuprofen also causes peptic ulcers. To determine if this bacteria is present, H. pylori can be diagnosed through blood, breath, and tissue tests. Blood tests, which are the most common diagnostic tool, are used to detect antibodies to H. pylori bacteria. Then, a breath test is used after treatment to determine if the treatment worked. Statistics show that 20% of people under 40 and over half of the people over the age of 60 are infected with H. pylori. However, those individuals who are infected do not always develop ulcers. Infection with H. pylori or irritation from medication use may depend on the gastric or intestinal environment of the person who develops and ulcer.

The purpose of medical treatment is to kill the H. pylori bacteria and reduce stomach acid. Medical treatment usually involves a combination of antibiotics, acid suppressors, and stomach protectors. H pylori peptic ulcers are usually treated with antibiotics to kill the bacteria. Conventionally, acid-suppressing drugs and stomach-lining protectors are used for ulcer treatment. The greatest risk for people with ulcers is that the ulcer will erode through the entire stomach lining.

This can cause life-threatening bleeding and infections. Therefore, anyone who thinks he may have an ulcer should seek help from a physician immediately. Although there are risks of adverse effects, it may be necessary to use medications at first. However, there are certain natural supplements that work well along with prescription medications to assist healing. The most effective natural supplement for ulcers is a specially processed form of licorice root. By using DGL instead of standard drug therapy one addresses the underlying cause for a condition rather than simply blocking an effect. Use of DGL addresses the underlying factors and promotes true healing by stimulating the normal defense mechanisms which prevent ulcer formation. DGL improves both the quality and quantity of the protective substances that line the intestinal tract. Research has proven that licorice root extract stimulates the release of secretin, which helps to rebuild the stomach or intestine's protective lining.

Antacids, which are alkaline compounds that neutralize stomach acid, were, at one point, the key player in anti-ulcer therapy.

However, these dugs have been largely replaced by the histamine2-receptor antagonists and the proton pump inhibitors.

Most antacids adversely affect the bowels, with some promoting constipation and others promoting diarrhea. Some antacids also contain large amounts of sodium, while others raise the stomach's pH, influencing the absorption of other drugs.

DGL licorice can be used along with antibiotic therapy and other agents that may be prescribed by a licensed health care professional. Consumers will find that DGL's restorative effects on the gastric mucosa help to speed up healing and prevent recurrences of future ulcers. The drugs that are used in standard therapy do not always address the underlying cause of peptic ulcers. Instead, they simply treat the symptoms caused by an ulcer. DGL, on the other hand, does not inhibit stomach acid production, neutralize stomach acid, or block histamine. It promotes true healing by stimulating the normal defense mechanisms that prevent ulcer formation and improve the integrity of the stomach lining. Additionally, DGL accomplishes this without any of the side effects that are associated with the standard peptic ulcer therapy.

DGL licorice should mix with saliva in order to promote release of salivary compounds, which in turn stimulate the growth and regeneration of stomach and intestinal cells. There are several forms of chewable DGL that are available on the market.

In order to treat a peptic ulcer, people should take 760 to 1,520 mg of DGL about twenty minutes before meals. It should never be used after meals, due to lack of efficacy. It should also be used for about eight to sixteen weeks in order to see results, or as recommended by a health care professional. As previously stated, DGL is a specially processed form of licorice which avoids the main hazards of regular licorice. There are no known side effects or drug interactions with the use of DGL. Those women who are pregnant or nursing should talk to a licensed health care practitioner before using any dietary supplement. DGL, which improves the integrity of the stomach lining, stimulates the normal defenses, and prevents ulcer formation, provides the body with the ability to heal itself. DGL licorice can be found at your friendly online vitamin store. <bio>Please visit VitaNet Health Foods at http://vitanetonline.com/ VitaNet sells supplements to help fight heart burn like DGL Licorice.
There are many causes of bad breath in a person. It is important for any person who suffers, or causes others to suffer, with bad breath to find the specific cause of their bad breath. This common social disease can be devastating to personal relationships at work and home. The only way to find a good, effective treatment for bad breath is to find the specific cause. Some people who suffer with specific digestive disorders will find that Zantac is a cure for bad breath. This is one of those unintended consequences.

Halitosis is often used as meaning foul odor from the mouth. This is not correct and is a common misconception. The correct term for odors emanating from the oral cavity (your mouth) is Fetor Oris where Fetor is defined as a strong offensive, foul breath odor smell and Oris is "from the mouth". Fetor Oris is a common malady for all ages.

Peptic Ulcer And Bad Breath

Bacteria in the body that is causing other problems as well cause many times bad breath. Certain bacteria have distinct odors and this will present itself as bad breath or other odor disorders in the human body. It has been found that peptic ulcers are often caused by a bacterium and the chronic infection makes a person have reflux and sometimes frequent vomiting that will contribute to the bad breath. By taking medication for the peptic ulcer, an H2 blocker such as Zantac may cure bad breath also.

The Effect Of Zantac To Cure Bad Breath

A person with a peptic ulcer not only has a bacterial infection that may be causing odor but has a problem with heartburn and reflux that will lead to bad breath as well. Zantac works in the stomach to decrease the indigestion associated with the ulcer. This will prevent heartburn, reflux, and any other odors with the ulcer. Taking Zantac to cure bad breath can be an effective method of treatment. The doctor may also treat the ulcer with an antibiotic to rid the body of the offending bacteria. The combination of treatments will make successful cure more possible.

Talk To A Doctor

Any one with a chronic problem of bad breath will want to see their personal physician and discuss the problem. If a person also has frequent indigestion or heart burn they should be sure to inform the doctor of this. The doctor can have tests performed that can help determine the specific cause of the bad breath and can prescribe treatment. If a digestive disorder is the basic cause Zantac can help to cure the bad breath problem.

Zantac is available over the counter but there are also prescription strengths available.

The doctor can best determine which strength and method of taking the drug will suit the patient. If a person can not get in to see the doctor quickly they may want to start taking the over the counter Zantac while waiting for their appointment but they should be sure to let the doctor know of this medication and any other medications they are taking. <bio>To Your Fresh Breath Success!
Caused by damage to the vagus nerve, which regulates the digestive system, Gastroparesis is a condition in which the stomach in incapable of completely emptying food in a normal manner.

Because of the damage to the vagus nerve, which regulates the digestive system, the muscles in the stomach and in the intestine work improperly and with this malfunction keep the food from moving through properly the gastrointestinal system.

With this disorder there is no evidence of an obstruction or other occlusion of the stomach which could be the cause of the delayed emptying of food contents.

Gastroparesis is caused by uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension, or gastric surgery with injury to the vagus nerve. However, in approximately 60% of the cases, there is no definite cause of Gastroparesis.

Heartburn, GERD, nausea, vomiting, vague stomach pains, abdominal bloating, weight loss, vomiting undigested food and feeling full very quickly when eating even after just a few bites are some of the primary symptoms of Gastroparesis.

Gastroparesis is a chronic condition and current treatment typically does not cure the disease.

However there are several options available to help better manage this condition. The treatment of Gastroparesis is dependent on the severity and life-impact of the symptoms.

Easy to implement treatment options include dietary changes of eating several small meals each day instead of three large meals which allows your stomach to empty the smaller meals more quickly.

Also, the diet of choice should be one lower in fiber, fat and roughage. Often liquid meals or softer foods are better than solid foods for those with Gastroparesis.

Certain medications may also be employed in order to help with stomach emptying. One of the more commonly used medications is metoclopramide or Reglan®. However, medication often has dose-limiting side effects that may cause a patient to decide to stop taking it after a short while.

Another medication, Erythromycin, an antibiotic, is also used to speed up stomach emptying. Anti-emetics designed to control the nausea and vomiting associated with Gastroparesis may also be used.

This chronic condition can be difficult to manage and to control the symptoms. Working closely with a healthcare provider is the key to finding the combination of treatments that will work best. <bio>For more important information on stomach pain be sure to visit http://a-stomach-pain.com where you will find advice and tips on common stomach pain causes such as acid stomach ulcer, Crohn's disease, and other articles that you can view at http://www.a-stomach-pain.com </bio>

Stomach discomfort is caused by many factors, mainly by something that you've consumed, which may not agree with you. Unknown to many, stress too plays an important role in causing stomach discomfort.

Your stomach and stress.

The intestinal tract's function is to make food supplies available to the body. Whatever is not absorbed by the body is excreted at the end of the tract. The intestinal system is a long tube. Food passing through the alimentary tract isn't "in" the body until it has been absorbed through the intestinal wall at some point.

It's common fact that when you are busy, anxious habits take a dive for the worst. It is during these times that you:

- Over eating or lose your appetite
- Eat to quickly.
- Binge on spicy and greasy food and "sinful" foods such as chocolates and cakes.
- Eat irregularly.
- Consume too much caffeine and alcohol.

When all these happen, your stomach takes the brunt of the overload. However, the stomach is smart. In no uncertain terms, it tells us by several ways that it is not feeling good. Some of these ways are:

- Indigestion
- Stomach ache
- Flatulence
- Vomiting
- Poor appetite.

How you stomach functions depends mainly on the type of food you consume and how often you consume it. Its only function is to prepare food for digestion and if there is too little or too much of the wrong sort of food, then your stomach is bound to show some sighs that all is not well.

Researches are still not absolutely certain what other problems can cause damage to the stomach. There is considerable evidence, however, to suggest that drinking too much alcohol, smoking too many cigarettes and taking too many of the wrong sort of drugs will all damage the digestive part of the intestinal tract. These behaviors affect the rate at which acid is produced and the speed and nature of the movements of the stomach's muscle walls.

Individuals who are under stress are very often also the same sort of people who drinks too much alcohol, smoke too much and eat irregularly or too quickly. These types of activities can also cause stomach disorder. Therefore, establishing a strict and formal relationship between stress and stomach problems is difficult.

Type of stomach problems.

There are just too many types of stomach ailments to list. There are some, however, which occur more often than others. Here we discuss briefly some of the more common ailments.

Indigestion.

Simply put, indigestion is associated with a meal that is eaten too quickly of after an unusually spicy of fatty meal. Indigestion normally causes some pain in the center of the chest. This is usually accompanied by a slight bloated feeling, excessive wind and nausea. Occasionally, an indigestion sufferer will actually vomit. Very few people who have indigestion will be interested in food as the pain tends to be accompanied by a full feeling and a loss of appetite.

Indigestion can be caused by smoking and drinking too much alcohol. It is also known to be caused by too much tea or coffee. However, although these specific causes are significant, many individuals who suffer from indigestion do so directly as a result of stress.

Heartburn.

An acid mixture helps to digest food within the stomach and is kept away from the oesophagus by a sphincter. This allow food to travel down into the stomach but doesn't allow food and acid to travel back upwards into the gullet. If the sphincter, which usually divides the oesophagus from the stomach in this way, doesn't do its job properly, acid can sometimes splash upwards and irritate the oesophageal mucosa. The word "heartburn" is very descriptive, even when the sphincter is in good working condition, acid can irritate the oesophagus when you lie down or bend over. Naturally, individuals who have a weak sphincter, will find that they suffer far more when they are lying flat or bending over than they do when they are standing up straight. Despite the fact that heartburn can have a physical cause, many individuals who suffer from this symptoms also have it as a result of stress.

Gastritis.

Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach that can be caused by several factors, alcohol, by the consumption of a foodstuff to which you are allergic, by a virus infection or by any one of a number of other mechanism which are not yet properly understood. There are some specific changes in the stomach mucosa when gastritis is present, but in practice, it is virtually impossible to differentiate clinically between dyspepsia, gastritis and peptic ulcers without undergoing specific investigation such as a barium meal examination or an endoscopy.

Peptic and gastric ulcer.

A peptic ulcer is simply any ulcer in the upper part of the intestinal tract. Th word "peptic" is used as a synonym for digestion. A gastric ulcer, however, is one that is found in the stomach, while a duodenal ulcer is one that is found in the duodenum. Ulcer of all kinds result from an imbalanced between the power of the secretions produced by the stomach and the resistance of the lining of the part of the intestine concerned.

Duodenal ulcer.

The most important symptom of a duodenal ulcer is usually pain, and this is often the only symptom that occurs. The pain is usually localized in the epigastrium, and, unlike gastric ulcers, eating usually helps relieve the pain. People who have duodenal ulcer will often wake up at night and sneak downstairs to get a glass of milk and a biscuit to give them some comfort for the pain. The other characteristic factor of the pain that people get with duodenal ulceration is that it tends to disappear for weeks or even months at a time for no apparent reasons. However, just when you think your problems is over, it'll come right back.

Nausea.

This is by no means a symptom caused extensively by the consumption of food stuff which upset the system. Nausea and vomiting can also be as sign of stress and distress. Nausea and vomiting are usually symptoms of acute stress rather that chronic, long lasting anxiety.

Wind.

The normal gastrointestinal tract is said to contain between 100 and 200 milliliters of gas under normal circumstances. A normal individual will often produce one to two liters of gas per day. It is, therefore, quite obvious that there must be a tendency for wind to pass out of the gastrointestinal tract at one end or the other.

Wind is produced within the gastrointestinal tract as food is digested, and some foods are more likely than others to result in the production of large quantities of wind. Brussel sprouts, cabbage and beans are often recognized as offending vegetables as they are known to have a fairly bad reputation in this aspect. However, vegetables can not be solely blamed. Some of the wind that causes such embarrassing noises gets into the intestinal tract in the same way that food gets in, it is swallowed. People who chew gum, smoke cigarettes or eat too quickly will often swallow air.<bio>Bardnurz Sham, Write an article to educate people so that they can improve their life by eat well and have a wonderful life. web: Health And Longevity Feed: Health And Longevity feeds Natural Herbal Medicine Store: *YOUR HERBAL STORE</bio>

A Hiatal Hernia, also known as a diaphragmatic hernia, occurs at the opening of the diaphragm where the esophagus connects to the stomach. The esophagus is also referred to as the food pipe since it is responsible for carrying the food from the mouth directly into the stomach.

A hernia occurs anytime when one body part pushes its way into another body area where anatomically that body part does not belong. The diaphragm is a large dome-shaped muscular wall which separates the chest cavity from the abdomen and is greatly used in the mechanics of normal breathing. There is a small opening in the diaphragm known as the hiatus. With a hiatal hernia the stomach bulges up and into the chest through the opening known as the hiatus.

Although the exact cause of a hiatal hernia is unknown, it is thought that these hernias occur as a result of a weakening in the supportive and surrounding tissues. Other contributing factors may include obesity, smoking and advancing age.

Although fairly common, especially in those over 50, the majority of hiatal hernias are small and of no consequence. Many are only discovered through tests when your physician is actually looking for something else, such as evidence of acid reflux disease. However, large hiatal hernias can certainly cause their fair share of problems, including allowing food and stomach acids to back up into the esophagus causing heartburn.

Symptoms of hiatal hernia include heartburn, chest pain, burping, and difficulty swallowing (dysphagia). These symptoms occur not as a direct result of the hiatal hernia itself but as a result of what the hernia allows...the backflow of food and stomach acid into the esophagus. Many people report an increase in symptoms when lifting heavy objects, lying down, leaning forward or straining.

Even if you have been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, unless you have symptoms then you generally will not require any treatment.

However if you have been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and are experiencing symptoms then it is important work closely you're your healthcare provider in order to determine the best treatment plan for your symptoms.

Lifestyle modifications such as weight loss, if you are over weight, reducing stress, sitting up after eating, avoiding tight fitting close and limiting fatty foods may be enough to give you complete relief from the symptoms of a hiatal hernia. Other treatment options include medications such as antacids, histamine blockers and proton pump inhibitors, and surgical repair if the hiatal hernia is large enough.

Relief can be found from a symptomatic hiatal hernia.
The kidneys:

The two kidneys are responsible for many vital functions. Briefly, they perform the complex task of extracting from the blood, used up proteins, minerals and other elements making up the toxic waste of the metabolic process. This residual material, together with waste water, is then passed in the form of urine, through to the bladder before being finally expelled from the body.

Allergy-caused overloading may cause the liver to deteriorate and lose its capacity to cope fully with its detoxifying duties. As a result, the toxins, left to circulate in the blood, will poison the body and cause damage to the kidneys. Recent studies have shown that kidney failure can be caused by overloading with food toxins. Since undetected food allergies are known to overload the body with toxins, it follows that the kidneys will indeed suffer and may become a 'target' organ.

The respiratory system:

The respiratory system comprises the trachea (windpipe), the bronchials and the lungs. Air that we breathe passes through the trachea and bronchials into the lungs where it is used to oxygenate the blood. At the same time, carbon dioxide is extracted from the blood and expelled from the lungs into the atmosphere.

Victims of ecological allergies invariably suffer from chemical as well as food intolerances. Some of the more common chemical allergens are the hydrocarbon products, such as petrol and diesel fumes, pressure pack propellants, etc. When these substances are inhaled into the lungs they are absorbed along with oxygen into the bloodstream. To the allergic person, this ingestion through the lungs sets up the same allergic process as an allergy reaction, caused by eating an allergenic food. Consequently, the person becomes ill but often does not realize the cause, since chemical allergies, like food allergies, can be masked, with resultant symptoms that are seemingly unrelated to the chemicals concerned.

An example of food allergies causing respiratory symptoms is found 'in a report from Dr Elmer Cranton, of Virginia, who says that recurrent coughs are due to food allergies, not colds. This view was also recently supported by the British Medical Journal. Dr Cranton said that the most likely causes were dairy products, yeast, wheat products, eggs and citrus fruit. He has found with people allergic to these foods, that once they have been removed from the diet, the coughing stops.

Milk and milk products are one of the commonest causes of food allergies. Often, the reaction is a general tendency for excessive mucus to form in the nasal and other respiratory passages. This, in turn, can lead to constant colds, sore throats, nasal catarrh and asthma - all by-products of an ongoing and debilitating food allergy.

The stomach:

The stomach is a simple, bag-like organ and is part of the alimentary canal. It lies between the esophagus and the small intestine. The upper end of the stomach connects with the esophagus, whilst the lower end opens into the doudenum, which is the upper part of the small intestine. The stomach serves as a storage place for food, enabling a large meal to be eaten at one time. It also produces hydrochloric acid and the enzyme pepsin, to digest the food partially.

There are a number of different foods that will irritate the mucous membrane lining the stomach. Highly spiced foods, extremely hot foods and alcoholic drinks can cause ulcers to develop in the stomach or duodenum. Another cause of stomach ulcers can be the regular ingestion of foods to which the person is allergic. It is interesting to note, that the Japanese have the highest rate of stomach cancer in the world, due to the high salt content in their diet.

Dr James Brennan, in his book, Basics of Food Allergy, says that some ulcers are actually a symptom of milk allergy. He discovered this after treating a patient of his who had a duodenal ulcer for over ten years. He found that, by putting his patient on a diet which excluded many of the allergenic foods, the ulcer symptoms disappeared within three days. One by one, various foods were then added back into the diet to see which food caused the allergy. When milk was added to the diet the patient suffered abdominal pain, vomiting and weakness. Once it was again removed from the diet the symptoms disappeared.

Dr Brennan went on to discover, by the same process, that his patient's ulcer was also inflamed by wheat and pork. Once these foods were permanently removed, the patient remained symptom free for sixteen years.

Other doctors have found that, after removing chocolate, coffee and other known allergenic foods from their patients diets, stomach ulcers have disappeared. Dr Albert Rowe, co-author of Food Allergy, has found that eliminating eggs from a person's diet can greatly assist ulcer conditions.

There seems no doubt that stomach and duodenal ulcers are yet another symptom of the chronic masked food allergy. <bio>Author sites: http://www.e-self-help.com , http://www.herbalremedieslk.com , http://shabi-home-remedies.blogspot.com </bio>

Was your latest bout of the stomach flu really the stomach flu? Or was it some other virus that found its way into your intestines? Kid get sick and throw up all the time -- is it always the stomach flu? Actually, it is probably not. It turns out that what most of us think of as the stomach flu is really something else, a gastrointestinal virus. The flu is actually a respiratory illness, everyone just thinks that the stomach flu is that horrible sickly diarrhea. Even some doctors have started calling it the flu, just so people know what they are talking about.

If you have children, then you probably know how much the stomach flu can affect them. In most cases the name of the virus that they actually have is the Rotavirus. This is especially common in small children. This is not the only thing that can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Your child could be sick due to some nasty bacteria that found its way in, or even parasites. If your child is ill for more than a couple of days or is running a fever, it is always better to be safe than sorry, and take your child to the doctor.

A lot of times parents don't want to call the doctor about the stomach flu, but it is okay to if you are worried. That is what doctors are for, to support you and let you know what is going on, so that you don't have to worry about it any more.

The notion that the stomach flu is only supposed to last a day or so is completely off the mark. Most people stay sick with the stomach flu for days -- even a week. It all depends on which kind of stomach flu you or your child gets, because some are just stronger and nastier than others.

Whatever you do when your child has the stomach flu, you need to keep him or her well-hydrated. Lots and lots of water is going to make the stomach flu go away that much sooner, and it is going to keep your child feeling better than they would without the fluids. This is even more important if your child has diarrhea. In this case, it can be downright dangerous if your son or daughter is not getting enough water. You may want to look into getting some Pediasure, as it has the electrolytes your child's body needs when it is dehydrated. <bio>Dorothy Brown writes articles for several web sites, including http://foraw.com and http://mowek.com </bio>
