Stock photography is simply photos taken "on spec". This means the photographer takes pictures of various objects, people, or situations, and sells them after the pictures have been taken. They are not on a specific photography assignment, instead they are taking photos of subjects they'd like to take pictures of.

Stock photography is primarily used in printed advertisements, brochures, magazines, and websites, though there are many other ways stock photography can be used.

Stock photography is licensed in several different ways. The two most popular are Rights Managed Stock Photography, and Royalty Free Stock Photography.

Rights Managed photography is the use of stock photos that are licensed for a specific, limited time and purpose. If an advertiser for instance, needed a stock photo for one specific ad campaign, they could license a photo for that specific use. And they'd be limited to using the photo only for that campaign. They'd also be charged based on the size of the ad campaign they intended to use the stock photo for.

If they wanted to use the same photo again, they'd have to pay another fee. And that fee might be different, if the campaign use and sizes are different. These recurring fees are called royalties, and with rights managed stock photography they can be quite hefty. Ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars for the limited use of one photograph.

Royalty free stock photography allows you to pay a license fee once, then use the photo multiple times. There are usually limitations on this form of stock photography, however the restrictions are not nearly as narrow as rights managed photography is. A designer or advertiser could license one photo for instance, and use it in hundreds of different ad campaigns, without incurring additional fees. In other words: No royalty fees need to be paid.

Generally royalty free stock photography can be licensed for as little as $50 up to several hundred dollars depending on the licensing source and rights given.

One of the most popular forms of stock photography for small and web based businesses, is royalty free micro stock photography. This is a variation on the royalty free model, but it's referred to as "micro stock" because designers and advertisers pay just a dollar or two per image license.

This type of stock photography has become quite popular with website owners particularly, because it's a very inexpensive way to get top quality photos for use on their websites. Quality stock photos can be licensed for as little as $1 in smaller, web friendly sizes. And prices go up to about $3 or $5 for larger, print quality photo sizes.

Since these photos are royalty free, designers can use them multiple times for that one time low cost. Be sure to check the licensing restrictions though. Royalty free does not automatically mean "public domain" or "copyright free", and each micro stock photography site has their own particular use restrictions on the photos you license. <bio>© 2006, Kathy Burns-Millyard.
There are many ways to make money online with photography, but a popular and fairly new way is through Micro Stock Photography websites.

Micro stock photography is simply stock photography that's sold at deep discounts. Clients are able to license stock photos for just $1 or $2, and photographers earn money each time a client chooses one of their photos.

Micro stock photography is considered to be still in it's infancy, and some people feel it's wrong to sell photography at such low prices. Particularly since many professional photographers invest a lot of time and money on equipment, learning, and photo shoots.

For the beginning photographer though, micro stock photography agencies can be ideal places to start. Since entry requirements are not overly restrictive, many hobby photographers with inexpensive cameras have already started making a nice second income from their pictures.

How Does It Work?

The process of making money from your photography through micro stock agencies is fairly simple.

1. Research popular micro stock photography agencies online. There are quite a few of them, but you'll want to start with just one or two until you get the hang of things.

2. Choose your absolute best pictures to submit. Some agencies require you to submit 10 pictures for review when you apply for an account with them, while others only require three the first time. Most don't have minimum requirements though, and you can start by submitting just one.

3. Your pictures will be reviewed by humans, and accepted or rejected into the micro stock photography site. If they're accepted, they'll be available for clients to "buy".

Technically they're not fully buying your pictures though. They're simply licensing the pictures for specific use. Usually micro stock photography is used in websites, though sometimes it's used in advertisements, brochures and other marketing materials. The photographer always retains full copyrights to their photos though, and is normally able to sell the same photos over and over again to additional clients.

And this is the beauty of stock photography. Once you've taken a great picture and had it accepted into a stock photography portfolio, that one picture can continue earning you money month after month... sometimes year after year.

Most micro stock photography agencies pay $0.20 - $0.50 per picture license, or download. This may not seem like much, however a good photographer with several hundred pictures for sale could make a nice second income over time, because it all adds up!

There's a lot more to the stock photography business, which we don't have room to cover in just one article. You'll find expanded details about making money with stock photography in this article though: "Can Photographers Make Money With Stock Photography?" found at: http://www.stocktography.com/Making-Money.php <bio>© 2006, Kathy Burns-Millyard. http://Stocktography.com is a new, free online guide to Royalty Free Stock Photography.
If you want to take pictures that sell very well - particularly in stock photography portfolios - you need to be taking pictures with people in them.

People add variety, interest, and unique perspectives to pictures. Even if you take a picture of something others have taken pictures of millions of times before, if yours has people in it, it will be unique.

Consider: How many ways can you take a picture of an apple? And yes, apples can say a wide variety of things: Nutrition, healthy eating, fruit, food, hunger... all sorts of things. But if you add a person to that picture, you open a whole new world of possibilites. And by opening those possibilities, you have a much better chance of selling your picture more often, to more people, and possibly for more money.

If you're starting a stock photography portfolio, here are three ideas that work very well with people in the photo.

1. Business concepts. Creating business oriented stock photos can create excellent income for you. And business concept photos sell best when people are involved. You could simply have stock photos of people in business suits, or you could have people in business situations too - at a desk, with a laptop, or standing in front of an office building for instance.

2. Health and Fitness concepts. Stock photos of fitness equipment or fitness concepts sell well by themselves, but they sell much better when people are involved. Create stock photos with people on fitness machines for instance, or people in exercise cloths. You could also create stock photos with people get their blood pressure taken, using an insulin glucose meter, or simply eating healthy foods.

3. People doing things. Yes this sounds generic, and that's actually a fantastic thing. People doing almost anything will sell nicely in a stock photography portfolio. You could have photos of people swimming, jumping, laughing, hugging, crying, talking, eating, sleeping and more.

So there you have it. Three ways to start incorporating people photos into your stock portfolio, and making much better money with your stock photos. <bio>For additional information on stock photography with people, please see this followup article: "Stock Photography of People: Model Releases" © 2006, Kathy Burns-Millyard.
Stock Photography is as a popular way of taking photographs of anything from nature to portraits and can be either sold over the Internet or displayed in photo albums. The reality is that there are more stock photographers around the world than in any other photography discipline. Stock Photography follows the same basic principles required for any other photography dealing with backgrounds, lighting, camera, lens, films, subjects etc. The remarkable thing is that there are many amateurs involved. For example, you can go for a mountaineering expedition and use your SLR or digital camera to take pictures of the base camp. If the picture comes out as an excellent composition then you can always display it on your website.

The standard format for stock photographs is 6x7cm and the smallest format is 6x4.5cm. Initially, the 6x4.5cm appealed more to most photographers because the image proportions of this format matched those from the 35mm. The camera and lens used for the 6x4.5cm is compact and small and can be carried around with ease. You will get around 15 shots with a roll of 120 speed film. It was not long back when the 6x4.5cm was rejected as the image size was no different from 35mm. This led to the introduction of the 6x6cm, which is a traditional size for medium-format photographs. The 6x6cm is ideal for fashion and portrait photography and even for social photography. But if you are specializing in nature or landscape photography then the square format of the 6x6cm will limit certain elements used in the composition of the photo. There will be more cropping, which will defeat the entire purpose of taking a stock photograph.

This leaves you with three options, which are 6x7cm, 6x8cm and 6x9cm. If you are in love with the 3:2 proportions of a 35mm, then the 6x9cm will seem like the ideal solution because it will offer the same ratio. The only camera available in this format is the Fuji GSW690III. The limitation of this format is that it will be difficult to use it with a polarizer and neutral density graduates. The next option is the 6x8cm but it is not good enough for stock photography. The only model available for this is the Fuji GX680. So this will leave you with only one option, which is the 6x7cm.

So now you know why the 6x7cm is considered as the ideal format for stock photography. Due to the rectangular image of the 6x7cm, it is easier and possible to create a dynamic composition, which can be horizontal as well as upright. The image size is also bigger and is five times that of the 35mm. One small limitation if you perceive it as a limitation is that you will get 10 frames only in a 120 film roll. But the good part is that due to the increased image size, you will be able to enlarge without any considerable loss of quality. The other key thing is that the 6x7cm color transparency is very impressive on a light box as compared to the 35mm and 6x4.5cm.

If you are aspiring to be a stock photographer then you need to start with the 6x7cm. <bio>Seth Willis is the webmaster for http://www.Starephotography.com he enjoys photography as well as painting and blues and Jazz guitar.Stare photography is an Online school for budding and seasoned photographers to enhance their skills or start a new career. </bio>

Online marketers often talk about just how important it is to find what the market wants, then sell them what they want. In other words, find out what people really want, and then provide the solution. Do you think this approach would work just as well with selling stock photography?

Let's say you've created photos that, although they make great visual eye candy and tell a unique photo story, no stock agency wants. (A simple reason might be that they may have too many of these type of images already). You can choose to see this as a learning experience and 'try a new approach,' or continue creating similar stock photography that you hope will be accepted, one day.

However, I'm sure you'd agree that it's better to work smarter than harder. This means that with stock photography you'll need to be flexible and 'bend your creativity' a little, perhaps shaping it towards a more profitable approach. The good news is that this is very do-able. After all, you are in charge of what the camera sees and you decide on what pictures you want to take.

So, maybe it's obvious, but if you want to sell more stock photos, find out what the stock agencies want (and need). Believe me, if you ask, they'll tell you.

Most, if not all, of the stock agencies or micro stock agencies out there will have a 'needs list or wants list' at their website. Make that your first destination. Be diligent in your research and you will be on the road to success with selling stock photography.

Then you can create a theme of photographic work that's tailored exactly to the stock photo agencies needs and wants and then submit these specific images to them. Obviously there'll be themes that you won't be able to shoot, but there will be some that will fit well with your own lifestyle, environment, location and photo style.

This should rapidly increase your chances of making photo sales.

A search on a few stock photo agencies web sites revealed that they are keen for their photographers to "...provide something more unusual, or sought after... and it might make the most downloaded page."

In other words, don't create photographs 'the same' as every other photographer. Make sure your unique, individual style lets your images stand out, and at the same time be conscious of what the stock agency really needs.

Another simple way to realize selling stock photography success is by going to photo agency or stock libraries web sites and looking at what types of images they have, promote, use and sell... on a regular basis.

Look for the type and styles of images that they prefer. Is there certain image themes that get downloaded (sold) often? What styles seem to sell regularly?

Check to see if there are images similar to what you create, or check the downloads section... the micro stock sites will usually show you how many times an image has been downloaded... of course, the more the better, that means it's more popular (more money for the photographer). Just ask yourself this: "Could I create images similar to this..?"

Being honest with yourself and your abilities as a photographer is important... It's a big time decision to submit images to stock photo web sites... you really do need to ask yourself how likely will it be that I can make sales through this? And, is it the best use of my images and time?

If you can stay open minded about what themes you shoot (especially with the great flexibility of shooting digital photography), and focus on tapping into 'what the market wants' then you might find that your unique little approach to selling stock photography keeps photo buyers happy and you in profit. Go for it.

Copyright Martin Hurley 2007 <bio>Martin Hurley, (http://www.martinhurley.com) the "Sell Photos Online" dude is a photographer who helps people uncover their genius, talents, and sell more photos!
I love taking pictures. I just can't get enough. The more pictures I take the better I want to get. This also means that the more pictures I take; the more high quality equipment I want. It's an addiction. Many photography hobbyists have the same problem I do. If you don't want to pour all your money into your photography hobby, there is another option. You can turn that photography hobby into a successful photography business. A great way to get started doing this is through stock photography. Businesses all over are looking for pictures to use in brochures, websites, advertisements, and more. These businesses will happily pay for your pictures rather than hire a photographer to take pictures for them. Here are some tips on how to get started on making money from your photography.

The first thing you need to do to start your stock photography business is to decide if you want to sell your pictures on micro or macro stock photography sites. Micro stock sites (ie. istock, dreamstime, and shutterstock) operate on the premise that if you offer photography at a low price, you'll get more sales (which they do). These sites sell pictures for as low as a dollar for small sizes, up to ten or twenty dollars for a large copy of your picture. They also offer other options like allowing prints, and exclusive license (they pay you a lot more but you can no longer sell the picture to anyone else). Photographers get a percentage of the sale, which can vary from 20 to 80 percent of the sale price. Many photographers don't like these sites because they sell photography for much less than they feel it's worth, but many small businesses rely on them for affordable stock pictures. The other option is macro stock photography (ie Alamy and MyLoupe). You will probably sell A LOT fewer pictures on macro stock sites, but on these sites you make significantly more per picture, usually around $250 per photo (as opposed to the 60 cents I made off my first micro sale). Most of these sites will only accept pictures with over 6MP, but if your camera has fewer pixels, you can learn to upsize your photo in an editing program. While it is your own choice which route to take, many photographers start out on micro sites and then start moving their best pictures over to macro photography sites as their skills improve. You should note that some macro sites will not do business with photographers who sell their work on micro sites, so be sure to check their policies before uploading.

Once you've started uploading pictures, you need to remember not to stop. The more pictures you have online, the more sales you will make. Most sites have uploading limits and if you can, you should try to put up as many pictures as you are allowed. You should also put your pictures on as many sites as possible. Many people have their favorite stock site and only look for pictures there. This means you can put shots up on multiple sites; although many sites will guarantee you a higher percentage if you decide to upload a picture to their site exclusively. I would try not to overlap picture on macro and micro sites since someone probably wont pay $300 for a picture they can get for $1.

The next key to becoming a top seller is to take pictures with content that sells. Whatever you're subject is, you will almost assuredly sell more pictures if the background is a solid color. Black and white are the best, but any solid color will work. Generally people want a subject without a background. If the background is a solid color, it's much easier to remove with an editing program. If you want to know what subjects sell best, most sites have a section where you can see their most popular downloads. Just remember to get inspiration from these photographs, don't copy them. If all else fails, you can never go wrong with pictures of people. You will need to get releases signed ahead of time for pictures of people with recognizable faces and also of recognizable property.

Hopefully these tips will help you get started making money with your photography. Just remember that, just like getting the perfect shot, starting your business takes time. You just need to work hard and not give up, no matter how slowly it starts. Many people started out slowly and are now making enough on stock photography sites to take photographs full time. <bio>Lawren Graf is a writer for http://www.digitalshotsguide.com/.
Many dream of photography school. It is an art and a passion that few people can take and make use of. But, those that do, really can amaze the world with what they can capture on a single roll of film. But, how can you find the right school to get into? Having the right photography school on your resume really can make a bit of difference. So, take your time in choosing the right school for your choice. Chances are, you'll have many options to consider when you choose correctly.

Here are some things to consider about the photography school that you will choose:

• Does the school provide you the best possible plan of study? It needs to offer you what you want to learn now and in the future. This will help determine how well you do in the end.

• You will need to consider the format of the school as well. If you are to take photography school lessons through the college, will you be required to get a degree or will you simply take classes to gain knowledge without a degree? This is up to you, but it is also up to the school to let you in as well.

• You also need to feel comfortable with the school. This is important because in art, you need the freedom to make choices. While hard and difficult, you will want to have the freedom to do as you need to.

• You'll want to find the photography school that offers the right scholarships and financial aid as well. Not all of us can afford the highest levels of education, but when you choose wisely and with good financial intentions, you can choose the right photography school.

Photography school is waiting for you. Are you ready to get started? <bio>For more information please see http://www.photography-school-info.co.uk </bio>

Can you imagine anyone paying you good money for your photos? No? You know, I had all those photos from a recent trip to Rome, Italy, laying around and I thought it should be possible to make a few bucks off of them. First, I couldn't think of a way to market or sell those images but then I discovered micro stock sites.

Micro stock sites are great: You register (it's free) and then upload a few sample images. After your samples passed an initial review you start uploading and making money.

Let's look how this works in detail:

Stock photography

What is stock photography? Imagine someone is creating a website about healthcare. To beef it up they want a few images of doctors, nurses, operating theaters and the like. Rather than hiring a photographer (sending him on andquot;assignmentandquot; as it's called in the business) which can be very expensive the designer decides to use stock photos, i.e. images that are readily available. Usually stock images are much cheaper than andquot;bespokeandquot; photos. So our designer would visit one of the established stock image sites and browse around a little until she finds some nice healthcare related imagery. After paying up (usually at the tone of $100 per image or higher depending on the use) she downloads the photos, puts them on the website and calls it a day.

Micro stock sites vs. traditional agencies

With a traditional agency our designer likely spent between $500 and $1,000 for half a dozen images of doctors, nurses and stuff like this. That's small change if you are a Fortune 500 company, but what if you are on a budget or doing website design for a friend or a non-profit organization?

Enter micro stock agencies. Micro stock sites have stirred up the traditional market for stock photography over the last three years. What's the idea here? Rather than charging $100 or more for a photo, on many of those sites you can get high quality images for less than $10, sometimes as low as $1!

With a payout of perhaps 25 to 50 cents per image this is not very attractive for professional photographers but an amateur can make decent money this way and should at least be able to finance her hobby. And remember, this is the Internet we are talking about: Make it up on volume. 25 cents per image downloaded may not sound like much but if you have several hundred or even a thousand decent and usable images, all of them submitted to the big micro stock sites even a paltry 25 cents per download can add up nicely.

What you need

Most micro stock agencies have the same requirements: You'll need at least a four Megapixel camera (more is better, although you'll be fine with between six and eight Megapixels), your images should be free of noise, properly keyworded and should picture sought after subjects. For example, good selling images are business or healthcare related or illustrate a concept or an emotion such as love, relationships, carreer and the like. <bio>Stock Photography - http://www.axelwolf.org/stock-agencies-earnings.html. </bio>

Taking pictures of people in stock photos can be very tricky. There are many various factors that come to play in order to make a photo look sells worthy. Stock photos of people need to have lighting that looks perfect and is perfectly lit. Harsh shadows are a definite no in stock photos unless you are specifically trying to get that specified look.

If you take a look at stock photos of people they all usually have diffused lighting. The transition from light to dark is seamless and very soft. The lighting is usually very even throughout the entire picture. Shadows are never present unless desired. Stock photography will require some good knowledge of lighting properly.

A good start for lighting people would be the key light. This light will be the main light of illumination of your person of interest. Placing the key light on the same axis of the lens will make less shadows and a more flat picture. This type of light placing will make for very even lighting and can reduce blemishes and such. Another option is to place the key light to the side of the subject thus creating side lighting. Side lighting can be very harsh and very diffused. It all depends on the fill light.

The fill lights primary purpose is to fill in the shadows that are cast from the key light. An actual fill light can be used or reflectors can be used as well. The fill light is placed usually on the other side of the subject. It is on the opposite side of where the key light is at. The fill light must have a light intensity that is either equal to or less than the key light. If it is more than the key light it becomes the key light.

A back light can also be used to create a halo effect around the subjects outline. This will distinguish the person from their background. A background light also can be used to light the background. You can have many lights for a single photograph. It all depends on the desired effect you want.

When lighting for people in stock photography or any type of photography you can always default to the high key lighting with even balance of light and such. However, is this really going to help show the subject better? More advanced lighting actually is for the purpose of showing the character of the person being photographed. You can use lighting to make a person look scary, powerful, weak, happy, etc. Lighting can make a person look like they have more of a personality. Using lighting to add impact to your stock photos will be very beneficial and can make your photo much more high quality and profitable.

The color of light used is very important as well. Using the right color of light can make a subject look healthier and more vibrant. Using the wrong light hue will result in a sickly looking person. Do not simply skip out on the details of light when taking stock photos. <bio>Al Sanchez has a great program that teaches how to sell pictures online at http://www.photoprofitz.com </bio>

There are many people who want to make photography as their career. Many people find it fulfilling to engage in a life of taking pictures. This venture entails a good photography education.

Just like any other kind of school, the appropriate selection of a photography school which will meet the needs of the students is essential for a good education. This article tries to lay down some tips on how you can choose a good photography school. Listed below are the tips:

- Look at the bigger picture

In choosing a photography school, you must be able to look from afar to able to see the bigger picture. The selection of a photography school must be made under consideration of your general career goals. There are several tracks which can be taken in the field of photography.

If you intend to be involved in the more artistic side of photography, you can get more subjects which will aid you in this goal. If you are more inclined towards the commercial side of photography, you can choose a school which offers good business courses on side of the photography classes.

- Photography is more than point-and-shoot

Some people may want to take up photography just to escape from the "hard" subjects, especially those which involves math. Guess what? These are things that a photographer needs to take to be able to survive in the real world. Since most photographers would eventually own their own studios, courses in business management, accounting, marketing and other such courses are important and should be taken by photography students.

- Inquire about the size of the class

Too many people in photography classes can really be a hindrance towards proper learning. It will also prohibit the instructor in giving hands-on supervision on the students.

- Computer skills

A good photography school needs to have courses regarding the use of computers. The field of photography is a very competitive one and you could really use some knowledge of computers. With the advent of digital photography, the need for computer literacy is more evident than ever.

- Scholarships

It would be best if the photography school is offering some kind of financial assistance for their students. Some of the equipments in photography are not that cheap.

These are just some tips on how to choose a photography school. Choosing the right school is as important as having a good view of where you want to go. The right school is the best way to get there. <bio>Learn Digital Photography Now - Is an excellent guide to Digital Photography and finding which camera suits your needs.
As a hobby photography has universal appeal and most people almost always have indulged in it. Occasions are not complete without photographs being taken to capture the essence of the event and make it more memorable. Pictures provide a record of what happened, when it happened and sometimes how it happened. You can always look back in time when you look at pictures taken long ago and they make for a historical and pictorial record of times past. Nowadays almost everybody has a camera, whether it is a modern digital one or an old-fashioned film camera. Many people have more than one, especially since mobile phones not come equipped with cameras. Photography equipment is not anymore the perquisite of the rich alone, it is now highly affordable and you get so much variety of photography equipment that you are spoilt for choice.

In case you are really taken up by photography and your skills are well honed, you may decide to buy more specialized photography equipment which will help you in your artistic endeavors.

What Photography Equipment You Require

Apart from your camera, which should be good, other photography equipment can also be purchased. The camera itself should have a good lens. You might want to buy something which is inexpensive, and there are many in the low-price range, or you may want to go in for a high end product. High end photography equipment is expensive, but you may want to buy it if you want to become a skilled photographer. If you are keen on taking photographs and making photography your hobby, do not hesitate to buy good quality photography equipment. Cameras can last a lifetime and also provide timeless memories. If your basic photography equipment is good, you know that you will find it difficult to go wrong when you take picture.

If You Want More Than A Camera When You Purchase Photography Equipment

Perhaps you want to buy everything you may need altogether. Apart from the camera, you can go in for good light equipment. Among the photography equipment which will be useful to you apart from a good light system, would be a tripod for still shots -- it will steady and center the camera. A camera bag is another piece of photography equipment which will protect your precious camera from scratches and breakages. While these peripherals may not be essential, your picture taking abilities will definitely be enhanced if you use these items. Your basic picture quality will be higher than if you use a cheap camera with no peripherals.

From Where Can You Buy Your Photography Equipment?

Fortunately, photography equipment can now be purchased from almost anywhere, from your supermarket or an electronic shop or a special photography shop. You will probably be able to purchase most of your photography equipment at one go. But before venturing out to buy, arm yourself with the knowledge as to what you want, what are the good brands available and how much you want to spend. You can always check out reviews and get advice from friends and colleagues as to what you should buy before you buy it.<bio>For more info about Photography click here.</bio>

One of the most interesting types of stock photos is the night photograph. This photo is very interesting and can make for visually aesthetic, mysterious, unusual pictures. Most beginning stock photographers will usually stick with the sun. They will refuse to try out shooting at night with long exposures. Having to use a tripod sends them running back to their sun that exposes their pictures every time.

A great benefit to shooting stock photos in the night is that not many other people do it! If you could specialize temporarily in night stock photos and build a massive collection you could very well be the stock photographer that everybody runs to when they need a night photograph.

Do, however, recognize that night photographs are not in as high demand as photographs during the day. There is, however, a limited amount of night stock photographs available. Let's take the subject of going out with friends. There are dozens of stock photos showing friends having fun in parks, public gatherings, and a plethora of other places. But when it comes to showing them having a good time during the night there is a lesser selection. Fill in this gap and create a collection of night photographs based on the concept of fiends having a good time at night.

Night stock photos will require you to have a tripod. There is no changing this. Unless you have a massive array of lights at your disposal, a tripod will definitely be needed. When taking night photographs you are going to be exposing your photo for a very long time. That means that you will need the tripod definitely. A blurry stock photo because of a lack of a tripod will be worth nothing.

The professional stock photographer will probably be using many other devices when taking stock photographs. One such device is the remote release. The remote release is attached to the camera and enables the photographer to take a picture without touching the camera body. They simply push the button on the remote release and the shutter opens to expose the image. This has great benefits when taking night photographs. The biggest benefit is that you won't be touching the shutter button and don't have to worry about the photograph getting out of focus because you moved it. If you are going to be shooting a lot of night photographs you definitely need one of these shutter release devices.

An alternative would be t use the self timer on your camera. Honestly, I hate using the self timer. It's annoying and always goes faster or slower than I want it to. If you like the self timer on your camera go ahead and use it. The self timer is a better option than pushing the shutter button with your fingers.

Stock photos at night can be very profitable and valuable. It is, however, fully depended upon the work that you do. Do not try to cut corners in night stock photography or any other photography for stock. Treat it as a professional stock photographer would. <bio>http://www.photoprofitz.com Al Sanchez has a great program that teaches how to sell pictures online </bio>

For many people, digital camera photography means getting photographs immediately and sharing them with a vast network of people. For others, digital camera photography means cheapening the time-honored art of photography. How do traditional and digital camera photography differ and what are the pros and cons of digital camera photography?

digital camera photography differs from traditional in how the image is captured. Rather than an image being processed onto a piece of film, digital camera photography utilizes thousands (or millions) of small squares called pixels to create an image. Each pixel stores information about the contents of that particular pixel, such as color, brightness and contrast. In this way, digital camera photography cameras act more like computers than traditional cameras.

The biggest pro of digital camera photography is immediacy. Most digital camera photography cameras have an LCD screen on the back where the photographer can see the picture immediately. Being able to see the photo immediately and being able to download the photo to either a computer or a digital picture printer eliminates film and developing costs.

The biggest drawback to using digital camera photography rather than traditional photography is the resolution. Although traditional has a higher resolution than digital camera photography, for many laypeople it isn't an issue. digital camera photography can produce a resolution high enough to satisfy all but perhaps print-layout needs.

Lack of creative control is another con, particularly with "point and click" digital camera photography. This feature is great for amateurs, but for professionals, it can be frustrating to have light, contrast, and focus decided for them. However, many different types of digital camera photography cameras are offered, and professionals don't have to settle for "point and click" photography.

In the end, it depends on what you want from a camera. For ease of use, lower cost, and better storage options, digital camera photography is the way to go. <bio>Jeff Carlisle is a freelance editor for Digital SLR Direct. They utilize thousands (or millions) of small squares called pixels to create an image, rather than an image being processed onto a piece of film. Each pixel stores information about the contents of that particular pixel, such as color, brightness and contrast.

Most digital photography cameras have an LCD screen on the back where the photographer can see the picture immediately. This is the biggest plus of digital photography because you are able to see the photo immediately. It also eliminates film and developing costs because you can download the photo to either a computer or a digital picture printer.

Resolution is the biggest drawback to using digital photography rather than traditional photography. Traditional has a higher resolution than digital. However, for many laypeople it isn't an issue. The resolution for digital photography can be high enough to satisfy all but perhaps print-layout needs.

"Point and click" digital photography can also create a lack of creative control. Having light, contrast, and focus decided for them might be great for amateurs, but for professionals, it can be frustrating. However, professionals don't have to settle for "point and click" photography, since many different types of digital photography cameras are offered.

For ease of use, lower cost, and better storage options, digital photo-graphy is the way to go. In the end, it depends on what you want from a camera. <bio>Jim Zurbrugg is owner of z2marketing and writes on a variety of subjects. With black and white digital photography, you are bringing the end user back into a period of time when life seemed a lot simpler. Many digital cameras come equipped with a function to take these types of photos. If your digital camera does not support this function, you can still change your photographs into black and white with software programs.

You'll want your black and white digital photography to look its best when you are finished. A technique that can help you get the best image out of your digital photograph is through image manipulation. You may find it better to convert your eight-bit color images (which are usually jpegs) into 16-bit colors first. This is important because an 8-bit RGB can be the same as a 10-bit grayscale.

You can find information all over on the Internet to help you with your black and white digital photography. These resources can be found in everything from websites to magazines. Colored pictures can look truly beautiful as a black and white display. You will usually have to convert your graphics, because although there are options with digital cameras, there are no true black and white digital cameras.

Correct the Colorcasts

An important part of black and white digital photography is correcting the colorcasts. These are caused by bad lighting, but you can use software such as PhotoShop Elements to make the relevant changes by using their editing applications. The Imaging Factory is also software that can help you to easily convert and fix lighting areas in your graphics to get the best look with your black and white digital photography. If you want to turn your graphics into black and white digital photography, you can step into a completely new dimension in photography. You can do an endless array of projects right from your own computer. <bio>Geri Stone publishes information about all types of photography at Discover Photography http://www.discoverphotographysite.com </bio>

So you've got an eye for a good photo and can use a computer? Why not sell your photos on stock photography sites? There is plenty of opportunity for keen photographers to make a little extra cash and there is also opportunity to make lots of it!

Stock photographs are photos that might be of use to someone somewhere for something. Which makes the playing field rather large! Think of it this way, a photo of a man walking quickly along a crowded city pavement carrying a briefcase while talking into a cell phone might be of use to a magazine doing an article on cell phones or an advertiser of stress busting weekends away, or a newspaper doing a piece on business growth in the city.

The potential income ranges from small to large. Amateur photographers with small volumes of images can make enough money to help develop their skills and maybe buy some new equipment which is itself a good reason to try the online stock photography phenomenon. Experienced photographers who produce hundreds of images on a monthly basis can make a significant part of their living from stock photography.

Stock photography sites like iStockphoto for one example, allow you to sign up free of charge and start uploading your image files. They accept good quality jpegs and vector images as well as videos and each file will attract a value based on its quality and size. You are then credited with a royalty for downloads of your files.

The payment to you for an individual file might be just cents but consider that this for every time an image is downloaded and it starts to add up. A very popular image might fetch you $50 in a month just for that one image. If you have an eye for good images and can see what is in demand you can make lots! By the way sites like iStockphoto actually help you learn to spot the trends in demand for photos and you can upload hundreds of images.

Copyright is obviously important so there are some rules fairly common to all stock sites such as providing model releases where people are the subject of the photo or are at least recognizable in it. The stock sites have similar requirements on this but typically will want to see the persons signed consent form giving you permission to use their image in your photos and a copy of their ID. A witness signature may also be required.

You should avoid using any recognizable brand or logo type images and even well known buildings can be subject to this too. Any image that might be considered a brand or subject to copyright and trademark protection is to be avoided unless you have the paperwork giving you permission for its use.

Make sure you comply with the site guidelines for filesize and type and of course rotate and crop your images appropriately to make them most appealing and eye-catching. Remember they have to catch the eye of the potential buyer who is browsing through screens of all the images available.

Related to that need to be eye-catching, you will also need to carefully consider the kind of keywords someone might use when searching for images like the ones you are selling. These keywords can be input on the site you upload to but its often easier and better to include them in the metadata of the images themselves as this will save you heaps of time when it come to uploading your work. Photoshop and other graphics packages use the IPTC standard for embedding your keywords into your jpeg files.

So now you know a little more about the potential of stock photography whats stopping you?
When it comes to taking stock photos, having the subject of interest clearly in focus is detrimentally important. Stock photos require the utmost care to specific details. For stock photos, having a clearly focused image is an extreme necessity.

Shallow depth of field is frequently used in advertisement type stock photographs. It can be used in editorial photos but more frequently is used in ads.

Using shallow depth of field for stock photos enables you to isolate the subject very easily. Having an isolated subject is very important. People that are advertisers don't want to buy stock photos that are cluttered and filled with detailed backgrounds.

Setting a shallow depth of field will make the stock photo much more profitable in certain situations. If you're taking an expansive landscape photograph, shallow depth of field probably wouldn't be your best option.

Great settings for which shallow depth of field work good for include a few categories. The possibilities, however, are endless. Shallow depth of field could be greatly used when taking pictures of a product. Isolating the product will bring more impact on the object. It could be used when taking photographs of people. It could even be used when photographing small objects of interest.

A shallow depth of field makes the object of interest more interesting. Having a simple background brings more impact to the subject of interest. Do not, however, think that the background is only a useless part of your photograph.

When setting the background up, even though it's out of focus, be sure that it adds something to the subject. If your subject is a duck then having an out of focus lake is a much better option than a white blank background.

In case you don't know, shallow depth of field is created by using a very large aperture .Using a large aperture lets a larger amount of light in. Having more light in makes the light that is let in lees detailed and thus creates a blur on certain parts of the photograph. Aperture settings such as F/5.6 or F/2.8 work great for shallow depth of field photographs.

With stock photos if you took a photograph of an object it can be greatly enhanced if you turn it into a shallow depth of field photograph. For example, let's say you took a picture of a salt shaker and the background was a kitchen fully in focus. You could open the photo up in an editing program and blur the background slightly or extremely. This will make more impact on the salt shaker.

An interesting way to use shallow depth of field in stock photography is when you take extreme telephoto lenses. I'm sure you have seen the pictures of very small objects and only a piece of the object is in focus. Everything else, the front and back, are out of focus. This shallow depth is achieved by using a very small field of vision. It is very interesting to play with the different effects of shallow depth of field. But always be sure that the subject of interest is as clear and focused as possible. Stock photography does not allow room for photos with out of focus subjects. <bio>http://www.photoprofitz.com Al Sanchez has a great program that teaches how to sell pictures online </bio>

If you want to make money with stock photography you'll have to follow some basic guidelines, no matter if you shoot for a micro stock site or a traditional stock photography agency.

Shoot photos that sell

That's by far the most important point. Would you pay for an image of your neighbors mother-in-law? Or of his dog? Of course not! No one would, perhaps not even your neighbor himself.

Likewise professional photo buyers don't care for that kind of images. What they are looking for are photos that illustrate concepts, like career, relationship or retirement. Business related photos generally sell very well. Photos of handshakes sell well because shaking hands is a universal, widely understood idea that can be used to illustrate negotiations, contracts, treaties and even things like breaking-up or divorce.

Travel photography can sell well if it can be used to illustrate concepts. For example, a photo of the Houses of Parliament in London can be used to illustrate democracy or governmental topics.

Avoid legal pitfalls

Most stock photography agencies have strict rules regarding images of people (if the people in the photo are recognizable), property (if the image of the property can lead to its owner, e.g. a license plate on a car), and trademarked logos or items anywhere in the image. If in doubt, don't submit such images. If you want to sell images with recognizable people in them, all agencies will require you to provide so called andquot;model releasesandquot;. A model release is a document with which the photographed person permits you to sell the image without need of compensation. Obtaining a signed model release from ordinary people is next to impossible, so you might be better off to either weed those images out or hire professional models.

Keywording is the key to success, literally

No matter how good your photos are, they won't sell if no one can find them. All stock sites let you tag or keyword your images. A good approach to keywording is to answer six simple questions for each image: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?

For example, let's suppose you have a bunch of nice healthcare related images, shot in a hospital. Answering andquot;Who?andquot; you might find andquot;doctorandquot;, andquot;nurseandquot;, or andquot;patientandquot;. Answer andquot;Whatandquot; to come up with andquot;lancetandquot; or andquot;stethoscopeandquot;. Answering andquot;Whereandquot; yields andquot;hospitalandquot;, andquot;waiting roomandquot; or andquot;theatreandquot;, while andquot;Whenandquot; gives andquot;morningandquot;, andquot;afternoonandquot; or any other time of day or year. Ask yourself andquot;Whyandquot; to evoke concepts like andquot;sicknessandquot;, andquot;comfortandquot; or andquot;patienceandquot;. Finally andquot;Howandquot; can refer to the photographic technique involved: It could be andquot;black and whiteandquot; or andquot;monochromeandquot;, it might be andquot;blurredandquot; et cetera.

Keep the noise down

Always keep in mind that the end user of your image may want to print it out eventually. The larger the print size the more noticeable noise will be. Noise is induced by your digital camera's sensor and is something digital photographers have to live with, much like traditional photographers had to live with film grain. Generally speaking the smaller (area wise) the sensor size and the higher the ISO sensitivity the higher the noise will be. <bio>Stock Photography - http://www.axelwolf.org/stock-agencies-earnings.html. </bio>

You know, there is something that is definitely more artistic about black and white photography. I know I am getting a little away from the overall concept of digital photography. But as a photographer, you will no doubt run into the phenomenon that is black and white photography.

I can remember vividly a photography named Michael Zagaris who is the team photographer of the San Francisco 49ers. He said that he was just captivated by the use of black and white photography. The way the light and the shading are so much more evident. This helps contribute to the overall feeling and emotion of the moment that the black and white photo captures.

Some of you may be saying to yourselves that color photography has surely taken the place of black and white photography, and I would say that for the most part you are correct. An interesting note here is that black and white photography still holds a degree of nostalgia in most photographers, amateur and professional alike.Perhaps one reason for this nostalgia is of course that photography was first taken on black and white film. Not only that, but many photography students are tasked with taking black and white photos when they are in their first photography classes. I know in my first digital photography class I was astounded at the very idea. Only later when the photos were developed did I truly start to appreciate black and white photos.

Therefore if you are an amateur or even experienced photographer, I would encourage you to give black and white photography a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the level of sophistication it takes to really pull off a great black and white photo. After that you may be able to take in some advanced photos such as adding one stream of color. You may have seen these kinds of photos before when the photographer allows one color to be very evident in a black and white photo. For instance I can remember a picture of a little girl in a black and white photo, but the coat she was wearing was bright pink. It was great moment to capture.

As for taking the black and white photos themselves, more advanced digital cameras have gray-scale mechanisms that allow to this. Also you can have the color picture converted by using a digital photography software such as "Photoshop." Give yourself a chance in black and white photography. I think you will be pleasantly surprised in the results. <bio>If you would like to know more please visit http://tipsondigitalphotography.com/Black_White_Photography.html Timothy Cashman is an independent reviewer on products and services.
Your wedding day is often one that has been planned for many months; the memories of which will always stay with you. In the process of planning your wedding you have had to decide between a myriad of vendors who are hired to make your special day go smoothly and to help you infuse your wedding with personal style reflective of both of you. But when it comes to choosing vendors, none is ultimately more important than the photographer - simply because those photographs will tell the story of your wedding for years to come. When choosing the style of photography, you may want to consider fine art wedding photography =96 a unique way in which to capture your special day.

Fine art wedding photography takes the photographs taken at your wedding and turns them into works of art; a photographer skilled in such photography can manipulate the photographs in such a way that they will forever capture the spirit and style of your wedding day. Such photography is meant to be displayed throughout your home and passed on through the generations.

There are many photographers who are skilled in the more traditional styles of wedding photography. But, in this day and age, more and more photographers are exploring their more creative side and offering such creativity on to their clients. With the advent of the Internet, photographers have been able to showcase these skills; and clients are able to browse through the work of each photographer in an effort to find those photographers who are in line with the photography they envision for their wedding.

Once you find those photographers who are skilled in fine art wedding photography you should meet with them to determine if you like and trust them on a personal level. A photographer =96 more than any other vendor at your wedding =96 will be right along with you during the course of your wedding day. It is vitally important that you feel comfortable in their presence so that they are able to get the shots they need.

Fine art wedding photography can help you communicate the tone of your wedding for those who were not there and as memories for you to cherish for a lifetime. <bio>For easy to understand, in depth information about fine art wedding photography visit our ezGuide 2 http://weddingphotography.ezguide2.com </bio>
