It is thought that the earliest spurs were probably made from bone or wood. Spurs have been used by horsemen and cowboys throughout the ages. In its earliest days the spur and the metal it was made with were a mark of rank. This is where the expression to "earn your spurs" came from. As punishment a knight would have his spurs and sword broken and taken away as part of his disgrace Rowels came along in France or Spain in the 10th Century or so and evolved through the Northern European and Spanish cultures according to their needs at the time. The Rowel of a spur is usually round and spins like a wheel with spikes that attach to the neck or shank of the spur. It is the part that actually touches the horse and makes a jingle noise when the rider is walking around.

Spurs are best known in the American West for use with the American cowboys. Spur styles continue to change just as the saddle, chaps and all other horse-riding equipment has changed over the years. The influence of early Spanish design is still evident in today's spurs. Chaps also influenced the spur in that where long chaps are worn, a dropped heel pattern and a chap guard were invented. The chap guard has a curved blunt piece that comes out on the shank just behind the heel which keeps the chap away from the rowel. The rowel is usually sharp and could tear up the leather of your chap in no time.

There are as many spur designs as their are horses in Wyoming and every maker tends to put their own special interest and personality to each one. Western style spurs tend to be heavy and are often decorated with rowels that rotate or spin. The neck of the spur is longer than others to fit the style of the western rider. The English spur is very different as it is lighter and more slim. It has a short neck with usually no rowel. The English spur has a blunt projection that is usually rounded. There are some English spurs that use a rowel, but they are rounded with no spikes and are used in sports requiring finesse such as dressage. Its goal is not to speed the horse up but to control his movements in precise complex movements.

A few types of spurs are: Prince of Wales style, The Disk style, Swan neck with rowels and the Waterford spur. They are divided in to Men's, Women's and Children's, according to the width of the spur. They also come in different neck lengths.

There are also modern type spurs used by motorcyclists. They are basically worn as foot jewelry that are hung off of the leather motorcycle boots. They are sometimes similar to spurs worn by equestrians and can actually be a safety tool as some of them have bright material that can worn motor vehicle drivers of their presence on the road. They can even add small strobing LED lights to them for added safety at night.

In any case, the spur has had a long history and multiple uses even in modern day. They will always be ultimately thought of as a tool of the American cowboy in the end.<bio>This article was written by Janine Carter, owner of Posh Pampered Pets.
If you find that your heel hurts, feels hot and is swelling, relax. It is likely your problem is not related to peripheral neuropathy. It is more probable that the condition you are suffering from is either Plantar Fasciitis or Bone (heel) spurs.

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that results when the plantar fascia (a thin layer of strong tissue that supports the arch of the foot) is repeatedly torn. These microscopic tears may be caused by stressing out the arch, muscles weakness within the foot, tightening of the calf or foot, wearing shoes that are too small, overusing your feet by running too hard, too fast and too soon, and obesity. People who have flat feet, low arches or high arches in their feet are at a higher risk of developing plantar fasciitis.

Sometimes, plantar fasciitis is mistakenly called "heel spurs". Although it is possible for a heel spur to develop from plantar fasciitis, they are not always a factor of the condition. Furthermore, heel spurs are actually bone spurs that occur on the feet. A bone spur is a bony growth that forms on natural bone. Bone spurs are often smooth but can be painful if they are pressed or rub against other bones, tendons, ligaments and other nerves in the body.

Bone spurs usually occur on the sole or back of the heel. Most bone spurs that appear on the bottom of the heel are the result of plantar fasciitis, while those that occur on the back of the heel are often caused by rubbing shoes. The most common shoe to cause bone spurs are high heels. That is why these types of bone spurs are known as "pump bumps". The forming of a bone spur is the body's effort to try and repair itself in response to prolonged rubbing, pressure or stress in the affected area.

People who suffer from plantar fasciitis and/or bone spurs can seek many different forms of treatment to help them cope with the condition and relieve symptoms. When treatment is started early most people experience relief of symptoms within six weeks, and avoid the need for surgery. However, successfully easing symptoms in some people may be difficult if the type of job they do is demanding of their feet (IE. constant walking, standing or bearing weight, etc.)

The main goal of treatment is to find a way to help an affected heel absorb shock. The best way to achieve this is to provide the heel with cushioning and elevation. This helps to divert pressure away from the plantar fascia. Special shoe inserts known as Orthotics are highly recommended for treatment. They are designed to absorb shock, elevate the back of the foot, and cradle the heel.

Wearing the right footwear is also important when it comes to treating plantar fasciitis and bone spurs. The best shoes are those that offer good arch support and a firm heel at the appropriate height. A podiatrist may be able to recommend a good shoe for your foot. However, the best person to visit is a shoe specialist known as a pedorthist.

Other forms of effective treatment include:

•Calf stretching exercises •Stretching the Achilles tendon •Massaging the plantar fascia by rolling the foot over a rolling pin •Avoid walking on hard surfaces barefoot •Foot pampering: Ice massage, heat, footbath, physical therapy, etc. •Using a night splint to stretch the plantar fascia •Surgery - this is rare, and is always the last treatment option.

Consult your doctor about the best treatment options that will suit your lifestyle. <bio>If you are looking for more ways to experience Foot Pain relief please go to http://www.foot-pain-relief.com where you can sign up for a free newsletter </bio>

Bone Spurs are a bony growth formed over the normal bone. The term 'spur' seems inappropriate because spur depicts the thrusting of the bony structure into one of the organs to cause pain. On the other hand bone spurs are smooth which are formed over a period of time. Bone spurs can cause wear and tear by pressing and brushing on other bones or soft and smooth tissues like ligaments, tendons or nerves. Even though you may suffer back pain, bone spurs may not actually be the culprit. The medical term used for bone spur is osteophytes affecting people mainly over 60 years of age. It is a sign of aging as people in that age group are more prone to this disease. Bone Spurs per say can be painful and disturbing but the fundamental problems are the ones which needs your attention. Many a times bone spurs can lead to severe problems like arthritis.

Bone spurs are mainly responsible for the immobility of the joints which is seen in arthritis. Bone spur formation, is the process of repairing by your body due to excess wear and tear. The extra bone describes its attempt to repair the bone which is formed over a period of time. It is commonly found in the joints and those include the knees, hips, elbow, shoulders, fingers and feet. Many a times having a bone spur goes unnoticed due to the lack of any sign or symptom. It can be detected only during an X-ray scan which discloses it growth. Bone spurs are the trademark sign of some of the most painful diseases like DISH - diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, plantar fasciitis, spondylosis and spinal stenosis. The formation of bone spur creates spaces along the existing bone. This adds stability to the maturing joints and prevents dislocation of the cartilage. This proves that bone spurs can be salutary for some, rather than an annoying pain.

Home Remedies For Bone Spur

You should minimize the acute pain by applying ice or ice pack for 10 minutes and continue do this for four or five times a day.

If this is a chronic pain you can apply heat to reduce the pain. A heating bag, pad or a hot towel can be used in the similar fashion as the cold application.

Avoid flat shoes as they are not shock-absorbent which causes the ligament to stretch making the problem worse. Canvas tennis shoes are not at all recommended. Wear shoes which are well-padded and shock resistant.

You can also have over-the-counter pain killers such as ibuprofen to reduce the pain and prevent further inflammation.

You can also take up massaging to reduce the pain. The continuous hand movement over the inflamed area increases the circulation which reduces the inflammation.

Warning: The reader of this article should exercise all precautionary measures while following instructions on the home remedies from this article. Avoid using any of these products if you are allergic to it. The responsibility lies with the reader and not with the site or the writer. <bio>Sharon Hopkins has been managing number of natural home remedies websites, such as http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com, which provides information on different uses of the home remedies and natural cures. Bone Spur can turn into an harrowing experience if proper care is not taken. </bio>

The Spurs is the only major professional sports team that calls the city of San Antonio their home. For this special honor, the residents of San Antonio shower their "boys" with praise and attention. In return, the Spurs team delivers an entertaining season and also gives back to the community. This is quite evident through the efforts and endeavors associated with influential personalities, such as David Robinson (Carver Academy) and George Gervin (Youth Center).

It is believed that the impressive community involvement from players greatly contributes to creating one of the most loyal fan bases within the NBA. This fact is also obvious through the attendance records that the team set when they called the Astrodome their home court. They also broke records for having one of the biggest crowds in history during the 1999 NBA Finals. Now, they play in the ATandT Center and continue to regularly sell out seats.

Another unique bond that the city and team have with one another showcases one of the most important forms of respect. When celebrating championship runs or significant milestones within the sporting world, the residents of San Antonio march up and down the streets, honking horns and spreading pride with little disruption. When it comes to rejoicing after a Spurs-title win, a major riot has yet to take place.

Throughout the years, San Antonio has had a lot to be happy about. They have sent three players to the Basketball Hall of Fame: George Gervin, Moses Malone, and Dominique Wilkins. The first of these basketball greats inducted into the Hall of Fame was George Gervin, who was nicknamed the "Iceman" during his career. In 1996, his outstanding run with the Spurs left him retiring with the second-most blocks of any guard in the NBA.

In 2001, Moses Malone was inducted into the Hall of Fame. By the end of his career, his longevity in the game sent him playing with two members of the Berry family (Rick in Houston; 1979 and 1980) and his son (Jon in Milwaukee; 1992 and 1993). The last of the current Hall of Famers is Dominique Wilkins, who in 2006 was inducted after leading an NBA career filled with major scoring and dunking accolades. <bio>Looking to invest in San Antonio real estate? http://www.satxproperty.com Agente de Bienes Raices en San Antonio Texas http://www.satxproperty-sp.com </bio>

Most heel pain goes away in a short period of time, either on its own or after treatment. Without treatment the pain will usually spread around the heel. Treatments that are used to reduce heel pain seem to bring only marginal gains over no treatment and control therapies such as stretching exercises. The pain in your heel should go away by itself with time, but until then you might want to seek treatment for the pain. Treatment of heel pain starts with resting the foot. Conservative treatment of plantar heel pain: long-term follow-up.

There are numerous sock supplies for people suffering from heel pain. The patented sock supplies support for the treatment of plantar fasciitis, commonly referred to as heel spurs or heel pain syndrome. The clear polymer gel self-adjusts to fit your unique foot contour, absorbing the painful foot shock that aggravates heel pain and heel spurs. If, after several months of non-surgical treatment, you continue to have heel pain, do discuss the situation with your doctor, because your heel pain may be caused by other factors and surgery can be considered.

Self Care Steps for Heel Pains

Self-Care Several steps can be taken to care for a painful heel at home. Most painful heels spurs resolve without surgery. Swelling of the heel is not common and, when associated with painful medial-lateral compression of the calcaneus, may suggest a stress fracture. At that point, you will likely agree that it is better to be a heel than to have a painful one. If you follow these steps carefully, most painful heels will clear up.

The heel spur is a-symtomatic (not painful), the pain arises from the inflammation of the plantar fascia. The Merck Manual says a true heel spur "tends to be painful during its early development, when little or no x-ray evidence is present. It is recommended that you get an over-the-counter product that support the arch of the foot or help support and comfort painful heels.

Some things you can do to prevent painful heel syndrome: Watch your walk. <bio>Many things can slow down your active lifestyle, but heel pain can definitely bring it to a stop.
According to a survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association, 47% of Americans have experienced some form of foot pain in their life. Foot pain can affect every part of the foot, including the sole, arch, heel, and toes. Most causes of foot pain can be treated very easily, but there are different circumstances where surgery is necessary.

Some of the most common causes of foot pain include:

1). Bunions

This is a very common condition that affects the base of the big toe. It occurs when the big toe gets pushed toward the second toe.

Treatment: As soon as you notice a bunion forming, switch to wider, more comfortable shoes. If the bunion is severe and results in deformity or relentless foot pain, surgery may be needed. If surgery is suggested, get a 2nd opinion.

2). Plantar Fasciitis

If you experience foot pain in your heal when you wake up in the morning, chances are you have plantar fasciitis. This irritating foot pain means the band of tissue connecting your heel to your toes is inflamed.

Treatment: Stretching and rest will help you deal with the foot pain associated with plantar fasciitis. In some cases, anti-inflammatory medication is prescribed.

3). Corns

Corns are thickened skin on toes or side of the foot. They are typically caused by poor-fitting shoes.

Treatment: The foot pain experienced by corns can be easily eased by wearing properly-fitted shoes. If the foot pain is severe because of an infection around the corn, antibiotics may be prescribed. For immediate relief of foot pain, soak your foot in warm water, and then rub down the corn with a pumice stone, found in most drug stores.

4). Heel Spurs

A heel spur is a small hook of bone that forms on the heel bone. Heel spurs occur in almost 70% of patients with planter fasciitis. See a podiatrist is you think you have either condition. The podiatrist can determine the condition by taking and reviewing an X-Ray.

Treatment: Do not use heel inserts because they can increase your foot pain caused by heel spurs. Treatment may range from cortisone shots, to physical therapy, to a pair of customer made orthonics.

5). Tendonitis

Over time, wear and tear affects the tendons in the foot, specifically the Achilles tendon. Those who suffer from Achilles tendonitis liken the foot pain to a sharp smack to the back of the heel.

Treatment: Initially, doctors will prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, to alleviate foot pain. Physical therapy may also be recommended in order to strengthen the muscles.

If after two weeks of self treatment, your foot pain still persists, see your doctor or a podiatrist. Also, if you cannot bear weight on the foot, or if there is bruising, deformity, or blood present, a trip to the doctor is mandatory. <bio>Non-narcotic clinically tried and proven foot pain relief products, click on: http://www.painreliefforpain/heel_spurs.com, Pain Relief Products for foot pain. and for Foot Pain Relief Solutions http://www.forfootpain.com Ray Attebery is the Managing Dir. for Daily Health Updates </bio>

The most common form of arthritis affecting people today is osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease. It is estimated that over 20 million Americans are afflicted with osteoarthritis and it remains the biggest cause of disability among adults. But this number is expected to skyrocket in coming years as the growing numbers of baby boomers retire. Still, young people can also acquire osteoarthritis from severe joint injuries but it remains a major health concern for older persons.

Although diagnosed in over 20 million people, it is estimated that half the population has osteoarthritis in at least one or more joints. Basically, it is a very common affliction and risks increase as we age. And unfortunately, osteoarthritis is common in both men and women. Oddly enough, however, the condition is more common in men before the age of forty-five. After 45, osteoarthritis is more prevalent in women.

So how exactly does osteoarthritis affect the body? Well, the disease mainly affects the cartilage in our bodies. Cartilage is important to us because it is what covers the ends of our bones. Those bones come together in joints and the cartilage is what prevents them from rubbing together. Cartilage is also a natural shock absorber and helps our bodies weather the physical activity we put them through.

However, osteoarthritis causes the surface layer of the cartilage to break down and dissipate. What then happens is the bones no longer have the same level of protection so when they rub together. The result will be painful and a person will lose movement as the disease progresses.

The joint itself will actually start to lose its shape as osteoarthritis progresses. This may then allow bone spurs to grow on the edges of the joints. When these bone spurs break off, they may become lodged in the joint and cause further discomfort and injury. In time, osteoarthritis can all but incapacitate a person and leave them immobile.

Unfortunately, there is not a lot physicians can do in order to stop the progression of osteoarthritis. Anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen will generally help alleviate the swelling in the joints and thus lessen pain, but no actual treatment exists. However, research has shown that maintaining a healthy diet and active lifestyle tend to delay the onset of the condition.

Osteoarthritis is a very painful and debilitating disease that afflicts millions of people every year. As our population ages and the baby boomers begin to retire in force, osteoarthritis will become an even larger health issue. Research is currently being conducted that hopes to one day be able to repair the cartilage itself and thus repair the damage caused by osteoarthritis. For now, those with the condition should consult with their physicians in order to determine the best pain management strategy for their osteroarthritis. <bio>Osteoarthritis Facts Hub is an information site that contains links, a directory and other Osteoarthritis Information.
Getting treatment for your heel pain treatment is something you should look into if you suffer from chronic pain.

There are many causes of heel pain. The pain itself is identified or divided into two groups, pain beneath the heel and pain behind the heel. A visit to your doctor will help to determine why you are having the heel pain and facilitate the proper treatment.

The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis.

This is an inflammation of the fascia ligaments in your foot. This ligament attaches the heel to the back of the foot. When this ligament is stretched irregularly, it develops small tears which cause inflammation and pain in the heel. The first steps in the morning, after a period of rest or being off your feet are when the heel pain is most intense.

Some of the root causes of plantar fascitis include no arch support in the shoe, being overweight, having flat feet, or a sudden foot injury.

Another cause of heel pain can be from the formation of a heel spur.

A heel spur is a hook of bone that develops beneath the heel. Heel spurs manifest themselves as an abnormal growth that forms when the plantar fascia pulls away from the heel. Heel spurs are often associated with plantar fasciitis.

Stone bruising is another source of irritation and heel pain. Just like the name suggests, a stone bruise is caused by stepping on a rock or stone and bruising the fat pad on your heel. This, of course, causes pain and discomfort when walking. This injury will usually heal itself with rest, but nonetheless it is a painful malady.

Treating heel pain can consist of several methods.

With all types of heel pain the first treatment method is usually refraining from putting any additional stress on the inflamed heel.

Do not engage in any exercises that put repetitive pounding and weight on the heel. Icing can also help to some degree by reducing inflammation in the heel. There are even rolling pins available that you can put ice in; and even though you are not rolling out dough, you can use the iced rolling pin to roll your foot over in order to get a good heel stretch and apply ice all at the same time.

If natural remedies fail to alleviate your pain, anti-inflammatory medications have also proven to be effective in helping to relieve the pain.

Orthotics is considered the most effective heel pain treatment for a number of reasons. They come in a variety of sizes so anyone can get them. And the design of orthotics also allows seamlessly movement with your foot and gives support to your foot as your weight shifts.

Early treatment is also a key ingredient in pain relief. The sooner you begin treatment the better off you will be.

The majority of heel pain can be treated and healed by conservative measures.

Only the more serious cases or chronic instances of heel pain are candidates for surgery; and only after other treatments have failed to produce the necessary relief.

Make an appointment to see you doctor today if you suffer from heel pain to discuss your options for relief. <bio>For more important information on foot pain be sure to visit http://www.sore-foot-remedies.com where you will find advice and tips on common foot pain causes such as plantar fasciitis, foot corns, and other articles that you can view at http://www.sore-foot-remedies.com </bio>

Metatarsal stress fractures or a bone spur can cause pain at the top of the foot. A bone spur is an enlarged bone that looks like a bump on top of the foot. The bone spur is likely the result of too much pressure or too tight shoes.

The most common remedy for bone spurs involves wearing a larger size shoe and not tying shoelaces quite so tight so that you take some of the pressure off the bone. Remember, feet swell when running long distances. If you're a runner, you might want to cut a piece of foam rubber about tick to make a doughnut-shaped pad that will fit over the bone spur. Put it on before you run, or glue it to the tongue of your running shoe.

You can also reduce the pain of bone spurs by keeping your weight under control. You should also try to minimize the shock to the feet from constant pounding on hard surfaces. Choose footwear with some padding or shock-absorbing materials.

A bone spur or overgrowth that develops on top of the bone may prevent the bone from flexing as it should, especially when walking. This results to a stiff big toe also known as hallux rigidus.

Hallux rigidus commonly affects adults between 30 and 60. There are no good explanations as to why this condition happens to some and not others. But one theory suggests that hallux rigidus is the result of an injury to the toe that damages that articular cartilage.

The usual symptom of hallux rigidus is difficulty bending the toe up and down, especially when walking. This type of foot problem is easy to treat in its early stage. Waiting for the bone spur to appear on top of the foot will only make the condition more difficult to treat.

There are many non-surgical options for treating pain on the top of the foot. Using pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen can help to reduce the swelling and pain. Using ice packs or taking contrast baths may also reduce inflammation and control symptoms for short periods. These measures provide temporary relief, but are not enough to prevent the condition from developing further.

Wearing shoes with plenty of room at the toe may also help in reducing the pressure -- and high heels are out I'm afraid. A shoe with a stiff sole, either with a rocker or roller bottom design and sometimes a steel shank or metal brace in the sole maybe required. For supporting the foot and reducing the bend of the big toe this type of shoe is excellent, especially when walking.

A contrast bath might also prove helpful. This technique involves putting your foot in first cold, then hot water to reduce inflammation. There are two buckets required, one bucket containing cold water and the other with hot water (at a tolerable temperature of course). Alternate between the cold and hot water for five minutes ending with a cold session. Surgical options may also be considered for severe foot problems.

If you think you have any of the foot problems discussed here, consult your own doctor for the treatments that will be best for your unique situation. <bio>By Dave Wilson.
Make sure you stand out from the dating crowd - with a great photo . . .

Adding your photograph to your personal profile is a great way of getting noticed, but it's the one thing that many internet daters are reluctant to do. Many of the profiles you view will have photographs attached, but that may not convince you that you need to do the same.

People who don't post their photograph often say that they are too shy, or that they are worried about security. Remember that the whole point of internet dating is to attract people you wouldn't usually meet and letting them see what you look like is very different from giving out your address or telephone number. If you're worried that your photo may not do you justice - don't. The photo just gives people an idea of what you look like. It's not meant to be model portfolio or glossy magazine standard - and people who reject you based just on your picture probably aren't worth getting to know anyway.

Still doubtful? Here are some good reasons why you should post your photo:

1. Studies have shown that dating profiles without photos are more likely to get passed over than ones with good, clear photos attached to them.

2. Not posting a photo may lead other people to suspect you have something to hide.

3. A good photo is an attention-grabber. Although most people won't judge you solely on your photograph, it could be the thing that spurs them on to read the rest of your profile and get in touch.

Remember that your photograph doesn't have to be picture-perfect. It just needs to be clear and preferably one that doesn't include other people. In the long run, it could increase your chances of being contacted by other interested daters, giving you the opportunity to show them what you're like in real life! <bio>Dateline is one of the top online dating agencies in the UK.
The human foot is made up of 26 different bones (25% of all the bones in the body), 22 distinct joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. The foot can be broken down into six separate sections: the heel, the instep, the sole, the ball of the foot, the toes and the toenails. Since this section of the body is so complex, many different ailments take place in the feet.

Pressure related problems: An average day of walking around is the equivalent of hundreds of tons of pressure to your feet. Injuries like fallen arches can result after a lifetime of being on your feet all day, every day. Long term effects of fallen arches can result in chronic knee pain and shin splints.

Traumatic injuries: As any professional athlete can tell you, traumatic foot injuries can be a pain in the, well, foot. Broken toes and foot bones can take months to heel, and Achilles tendon injuries can be debilitating for life. One of the most common injuries to the foot is simply dropping something heavy onto the foot and crushing one or more bones in the process.

Ingrown Toenails: An ingrown toenail is when the side or the corner of the toenail end up digging into the skin and causing moderate to severe pain, swelling, redness and in extreme cases, infection. They can usually be cured by simply soaking the toe in hot water for about 30 minutes and then placing thin fabric under the nail to keep it from digging into the foot. In serious cases, minor surgery might be needed to remove the nail from the foot.

Plantars warts: Plantar warts are small, usually round warts that appear on the sole of the foot and are caused by the HPV virus. They sometimes have small black specks with them that will bleed when the surface is punctured. The wart is usually covered by a layer of hard skin due to the pressure on the foot during periods of standing and walking. It can be spread by use of common showers or around swimming pools. They are usually treated by using regular over-the-counter wart medicine containing acid.

Arthritis: Arthritis in the foot is extremely common in older people since the foot alone has 33 joints. Any sort of traumatic injury to the foot can cause arthritis in the future.

Heel conditions: The two most common causes of severe pain in the heel belong to plantar fasciitis and bone spurs in the heel. Bone spurs are caused by a calcium deposit attached to the bone of the heel. They can go from mildly annoying to excruciating depending on the size. We'll discuss plantar fasciitis later.

Athelte's Foot: Athlete's foot is caused by a fungus that attacks the feet. It ranges from being almost painless to causing extreme burning and itching all over the toes and sole of the foot. There are many different over the counter remedies for Athlete's foot, but if you use many common areas barefoot, you may have to treat it over and over again as it's easy to catch.

Nerve Problems in the feet: Most nerve problems in the feet are caused by the long-term effects of diabetes. The nerves in the feet are the longest nerves in the body and are susceptible to neuropathy and other ailments brought on by diabetes.

Diabetes: Other than the aforementioned nerve problems, diabetes seriously effects the circulation in the body and many serious diabetes sufferers have lost fingers, toes and even feet due to lack of circulation due to a lifetime of diabetes.

Congenital foot conditions: Birth defects can range from misshapen feet to bone protrusions, to nerve problems. Most congenital problems can be dealt with through surgery.

You can see from this brief overview how many aspects there are to the feet and why foot pain can be such a common and complicated problem for many people. <bio>Dave Wilson has an interest in Foot Pain.
Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, is a condition that occurs when the arch in the foot collapses. The collapse of the arch causes the entire sole of the foot to come into complete contact, or almost in complete contact, with the floor. As a result, people with flat feet are unable to tread normally and are forced to alter their steps.

What causes flat feet?

- Genetics - In most cases, (approximately 20-30% of the population) flat feet is genetic and both feet are affected. Those born with naturally flat feet usually have a malformed joint, or two or more bones may have merged together that caused the feet to become stiff and flat.

- Injury that causes stiffness and distorts the foot joints such as a ruptured tendon - Arthritis - Illness -- Diseases that affect the nervous system or muscles (I.E. spian bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy) can cause flat feet because muscles become week and stiff, and can no longer function effectively together.

- Natural aging process - Pregnancy -- Sometimes pregnant women develop flat feet from the temporary changes caused by an increase in elastin in their body.

Usually, flat feet is a permanent condition.

What symptoms can occur from having flat feet? People with flat feet are at a higher risk of developing foot problems because they suffer from over-pronation. Over-pronation is when the feet roll excessively inward due to the stress overload placed on the ligaments and tendons of the ankle. This weakens the ankle and inside portion of the foot causing it to turn inward. Over-pronation can lead to painful symptoms including -

Bunions -- A deformity of the big toe that occurs when the joint becomes misaligned and protrude outward.

Calluses -- When the big toe loses flexibility, calluses usually occur under the sole of the foot near the second toe where stress is being placed.

Hammer toes -- When the angle of the big toe increases inward, it begins to slide under the second toe. As a result, the metatarsal bone rises up and causes a hammer toe to form.

Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs -- The Achilles tendon becomes shorter and pulls up on the heel of a person with flat feet, causing the arch to flatten and the foot to become longer. Thus, the plantar fascia (tight band of muscle under the foot arch) becomes abnormally stretched, which can lead to pain in the heel bone (plantar fasciitis) and heel spurs.

Low back pain -- This usually occurs due to strain on the sciatic nerve. This nerve links the lower back to the foot via the leg. The strain is typically caused by repeated shock from running and over-pronation.

Finding relief from symptoms -- There are different methods for treating flat feet, such as --

- Stretching exercises -- Engage in exercises (2 -- 3 times daily) that focus on the arch of your foot and Achilles' tendons (IE. rolling your foot back and forth over a rolling pin or foot gymnastics). This will help increase flexibility and reduce the stress and pain felt by these areas.

- Lose weight -- If you are overweight, losing weight helps to provide relief for your feet.

- Wear supportive shoes -- Keep an eye on the stability of your footwear. Don't wear shoes that are worn, tight, or tilt inwards. These shoes only increase your risk of injury and pain. Also, use orthotic insoles for your shoes to provide your foot with better support.

- See a professional -- If you suffer from chronic discomfort or pain, seek the attention of a foot specialist such as a podiatrist or orthopedist. They can help provide you with proper shoes and orthotics that are custom made for your foot. They can also recommend exercises and even surgery if it is in the patient's best interest. <bio>By Dave Wilson.
Yoga has been around for a very long time. For centuries, yoga experts have taught that by stretching and contracting the body, muscles joints and ligaments can be strengthened and you can relieve all sorts of pain as well. Yoga for back pain has been accepted by many chiropractors and back specialists. Before beginning yoga for back pain, consult your doctor to make sure you don't make matters worse.

Back pain can be caused by a number of situations, from slipped discs to damaged muscles or ligaments. However, back pain can also be caused by infections, bone spurs or tumors. When yoga for back pain is implemented, the pain is reduced by stretching and strengthening the spine. You must exercise proper posture and this should be practiced so that you can get relieved from the back pain even when you're not practicing yoga.

When you sign up for a yoga class, discuss with your instructor about your back pain. Tell them that you're using yoga for back pain so that they won't cause you to contort in ways you shouldn't. You should always start off easy and should refrain from doing more advanced positions.

A good starting out position is called the cobra. You perform the cobra by laying on your front, with your head facing forward. Place your hands on either side of your body as you would if you were doing pushups. Then, push with your hands, while keeping your waist on the floor, and lift your upper torso off the ground. Keep your face forward, not up, and make sure that you are stretching your back slowly. This yoga position for back pain has been known to help a lot of people but it can hurt you if done incorrectly. That's why it's so important to listen to your instructor before trying any position you're not sure of.

Yoga for back pain can help you, but need to be discussed with your doctor. You should be able to find a yoga school in your area. Many YMCA's and health clubs also offer yoga classes, and many are affordable. If you experience back pain and it keeps you from enjoying many of life's activities, then try yoga for back pain and finally live life as you once did.

For more Information check http://www.arthritisreliefhelp.info <bio>Roger Thompson writes articles on arthritis and pain relief for http://arthritisrelief.info </bio>

Neck arthritis, which is otherwise called cervical spondylosis, is a type of arthritis which is caused by degenerative changes in the bones and the intervertebral disks of the neck. It is primarily due to aging, as although there are other contributing factors as well, the condition usually presents itself after the age of 40 and then continues to process on from there.

With neck arthritis, the bones in the neck, as with the rest of the body, progressively degenerate as your body ages, and over time, arthritis of the neck may result from bony spurs and problems with ligaments and disks. As well, the spinal cord may end up narrowing and compressing the spinal cord and nerves, and injuries from neck arthritis can in fact cause full spinal cord compression.

There are a number of signs and symptoms that you are likely to notice from the onset of neck arthritis, and this includes: neck pain and stiffness that is usually worse with upright activity, you may have numbness and weakness in the arms, legs, hands and fingers and have trouble walking due to all over weakness, you may feel or hear grinding noises or popping in the neck when you move. you may experience muscle spasms or headaches which will typically originate in the neck area.

When it comes to the treatment of neck arthritis, most of the time, if your symptoms are mild, your doctor will most likely recommend a variety of non-surgical treatments such as rest and medication. However if your arthritis is very advanced or incredibly painful, they may opt to go for more serious forms of treatments.

Remember that different forms of treatment work differently from one person to the next, and so what works great for one person may not have any affect at all on you. This is why you may have to try out a few different options before you can settle on one specific one.

The most important thing is that you keep on top of your health and that you make sure to watch out for any signs or symptoms of arthritis, not only in your neck but over your entire body. Arthritis is, after all, one of the most common diseases worldwide, and although it can be treated, the pain and discomfort that is caused by it is incredibly severe.

Make sure that you get in for regular checkups with your doctor, so that together you can make sure that you are always top notch when it comes to your health.

For more information check http://www.arthritisreliefhelp.info <bio>Roger Thompson writes articles on arthritis and pain relief for http://arthritisrelief.info </bio>

The National Basketball League tips off another season Oct. 31 with both bet makers and bet takers sifting through the debris of last year's results in hopes of finding NBA betting clues to the upcoming campaign.

>From a wagering standpoint, the most important thing to know is that oddsmakers approach the NBA a bit differently than they do most other major sports, relying far less on Power Ratings, the numbers that form the price-making building blocks. There are several unique aspects to the NBA game that limit the effectiveness of Power Ratings:

Schedule: In order to keep travel costs down, NBA teams often embark on lengthy road trips. How far a team has to travel, how many time zones the players cross and how many games they're forced to play in a short time frame are crucial factors. A team in the east usually has a very difficult time negotiating a swing through Texas that includes three games in four nights in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. A team from the West Coast might struggle with an Atlantic coast travelogue that includes visits to Miami, Orlando, Memphis and Charlotte, for example. Because basketball is a series of cross-country one-night stands, more than any other sport, fatigue is an overwhelmingly important factor and NBA betting should reflect that element.

The Yin-Yang Factor: It may seem strange but if a team gets blown out one night, the next night they usually play a much better game. Every game is different, of course, but if a good team such as the Pacers were blown out by the Pistons, they'd be even more likely to blow out their next opponent and the NBA betting lines would echo that.

Injuries: Unlike football, where a team has a whole week to rest an injured player, or, if need be, prepare another player to take his place, with the day-to-day grind of the NBA, teams don't have that luxury. If there's an injury, oddsmakers make an immediate assessment of the impact that injury will have on the team. An injury to a key player not only has an effect on the pointspread but the total, as well.

While injuries are part of the game, it's naïve to suggest that a player is worth a certain amount of points. "It depends on the matchup," pointed out a noted oddsmaker. "For example, San Antonio's Tim Duncan might be worth more against the Nuggets than, say, the Trail Blazers. If the spread at home was going to be San Antonio -7 over Denver with Duncan, without him it might be -2 so in that situation, Duncan would be worth five points. But say the Spurs are playing at home against the Trail Blazers. With Duncan, the spread might be -14. Without him, San Antonio still would have a considerable edge in talent over Portland and you probably weren't going to see Duncan around at the end of a blowout anyway, so the line might be -11, meaning Duncan was worth only three points in that scenario. So it all depends on the matchup."

BETS AND PIECES: Most future books list defending NBA champion Miami as a slight favorite to repeat this season. The Heat didn't lose anyone to free agency meaning that Head Coach Pat Riley still can turn to a deep and talented cast that includes Dwayne Wade, Shaquille O'Neal, Antoine Walker, Jason Williams and Udonis Haslem. Prices vary, of course, but those interested in NBA betting futures shouldn't have difficulty finding 7/2 on the Heat.

If Miami fails to win back-to-back titles, which is no easy task, look for San Antonio, Detroit, Dallas or Phoenix, most of them in the 4/1 to 6/1 future book betting range, to be the new champions.

The Spurs still play defense with a passion and have a top-notch scoring triumvirate in Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili while the Pistons are hoping that Nazr Mohammed, who fled San Antonio, can help fill the hole in the middle left by the departure of Ben Wallace to Chicago.

The Mavericks strengthened themselves by adding Devean George, Austin Croshere and Anthony Johnson in separate deals. They'll help a nucleus that includes Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry and Josh Howard.

The Suns are a bit of an unknown because of the questionable condition of Amare Stoudemire's knee. If he's healthy, Phoenix will have plenty of firepower with Steve Nash and Shawn Marion. If Stoudemire is a liability, the Suns won't shine.

The bottom line? NBA betting, whether it is the daily grind or futures, can be tricky but astute bettors may also find it profitable. <bio>By Luken Karel for http://www.thegreek.com/ .
San Antonio is the eighth biggest city in the United States and the home of 1.1 million people. Situated in the state of Texas, the city has plenty to offer to tourists -- you will never get bored here! There are lots of things to see and something for everyone. If you have a week to spend in lively, colorful San Antonio, you can easily find something different to do every day.

You will find African-Americans, Native Americans and Old Mexican and Wild West culture still remaining. San Antonio has no less than five original Spanish Colonial Missions, if you are interested in history. The San Antonio de Valero Mission (known as The Alamo) is a fortress and former mission that is famous for being the scene of the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. You will also find La Villita in San Antonio, which is one of the first settlements of the Spanish military, who settled there with their families.

Nearly twenty-two million tourists visit San Antonio, the gateway to Southern Texas, each year, proving its great popularity. Even though it is a big city and still growing, San Antonio keeps its history and traditions alive and takes great pride in its status as one of the most popular and interesting tourist spots in the United States.

The Paseo del Río is another interesting site to visit in San Antonio. Spanish for "The River Walk", the Paseo del Río is a path of flagstone and cobblestone that passes by the San Antonio River and goes via the city center. You will find boutiques, parks, hotels, nightclubs, high-rise offices and cafes on the path, which is nearly two and a half miles long. You can choose between a morning stroll on the River Walk or time it for the evening to see a colorful bazaar of people and a beautiful sunset. If you enjoy theme parks, you might like to visit Sea World San Antonio or the Six Flags Fiesta Texas. The San Antonio Spurs of the NBA are also based here if sports is more your thing.

San Antonio boasts several interesting museums in addition to everything else. A forum can assist netrepreneurs in determining the direction of their growth and which products or services they may need to eliminate from their lineup.

Even the largest companies are acquiring smaller niche companies based on the notion that diversification often spurs company growth.

"If you're trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language, the language in which they think." - David Ogilvy

A business forum board allows you to interact with customers in an informal setting while you allow them the opportunity to do most of the talking while you do most of the listening. Someone once said, "We were given two ears and one mouth so we should probably listen twice as much as we talk."

Your customers want to be able to sound off and a forum allows them to do so in the safety of numbers. Don't be fooled, not everything that is posted on a business forum will be positive, but even the negative posts allow you to work at publicly correcting a mistake allowing other customers and prospects to see that you do care about making things right while seeing cases in which you followed through with positive customer service.

"I notice increasing reluctance on the part of marketing executives to use judgment; they are coming to rely too much on research, and they use it as a drunkard uses a lamp post for support, rather than for illumination." - David Ogilvy

Allow a forum to provide illumination and then take a few brave steps in the right direction. <bio>Scott Lindsay is a web developer and entrepreneur.
