Nothing beats a home theater experience when the sound is set up properly with speakers strategically placed through out the room. Getting the perfect sound isn't just about have the right speakers, it is in having the speakers set up in just the right locations. Having done this you are rewarded with great sound and annoying speaker cables strung about the room.

It is frustrating, annoying, and ugly to have speaker cables sprawled about the floor. Not only that, it is a dangerous safety hazard both to the person tripping over the cable and to the components that might be yanked and crashed onto the floor. Luckily there are a few ways to deal with the speaker cable problem.

The most common method of handling the cable problems is to use the 'hide' method whereby one runs the cable under the carpet and along the baseboard to keep it from view. In some cases this works pretty well and the cable is hardly noticeable. Other times, especially when a door is involved, it doesn't work so well.

The 'hide' technique can be refined by utilizing flat speaker cable. The flat cables lie flat under carpeting so they don't leave the little hump that gives away regular cables. They are also paintable so they can be blended into the walls and baseboards.

Another idea is to use wireless speakers. This will completely get rid of the need for cables all together. Or you can combine the methods and use wireless speakers for the ones that are the farthest away or the hardest to run cable to.

Wireless systems may not have the same quality as speakers with regular cables plus they are more expensive so using them in places not suitable for cables works out pretty well when you use regular speakers elsewhere.

If you are committed to the placement of the speakers you can choose another option and that is having the speakers built into the walls and ceiling. That way the cables are totally hidden. This makes for a great sound system both in appearance and sound quality but is not practical for a lot of people.

You can use a similar method to the above by running the speaker cables through the walls only and leave the speakers outside the walls. This takes quite a bit of effort and doesn't allow for changing the location of the speakers on a whim.

If you are sure you have the optimal location for your speakers, using this method is a good choice for keeping the wires out of sight.

Any of the solutions above, from the simplest to the most complex will work and the one you choose will depend on the amount of effort you want to invest. Using the simple 'hide' method will work quite nicely, so don't put off getting a home theater set up because you are dreading the cable problem. <bio>Jason Allen is a staff writer at http://flatscreentvexpert.com and is an occasional contributor to several other websites, including http://www.wireless-times.com. </bio>

Anyone who has ever thought of having their own business =96 whether it is from home or an office downtown =96 has probably sought the help of marketing software or companies. MLM marketing, or Multi Level Marketing, is a combination of direct marketing and franchise; now it is often called network marketing and yes, it is similar to the calling network you get from your cell phone company. Others have called it a pyramid market, where you start with your company owner on top then it literally scales down=85 the president calls two people, those two call two each and so on. The question is: if your business is selling the MLM network software, how do you (or should you) go about marketing that?

There are many different venues in which to advertise your MLM network software, but you have to utilize the one that will bring you the most business and is the most relevant to your area. You don't want to erect street side signs in a very rural area; this is where you'd want the internet or phone book advertisements. In a highly populated city you might want to use fliers or the reciprocal services of other companies.

The internet is going to be the first thing you look into. This is your most comprehensive way to reach hundreds of millions of customers who are interested in starting their own businesses. It's simple, really and there are many different avenues to take when using the internet as a marketing tool. First off, you can do banners =96 you know the ones that are sprawled across the top of a webpage that makes the page itself take forever to load. They work well when they're animated or flashy because they really grab someone's attention. Something else to do is purchase keywords from internet search engines. The more keywords (or tags, depending on the engine) you have, the better your chances will be of having your business being at the top of the list. Another thing to do on the internet is take the emails of existing customers and send out mass emails about your new product or service.

Television works wonders as well and if you have enough money put into it, you can choose the time slots in which you wish your commercials to appear. Something else to consider is street side signs, or fliers. Go to technology or computer sales stores and give them your business cards and offer reciprocal services: they advertise about your MLM marketing and you'll advertise about their computer repair services. You can even take out an ad in the phone book under computers or software or technology. Another thing to think about is word of mouth. If you live in a town that is not the size of New York City then this may work really well for you =96 just have a friend start out telling someone who needs your service and, if what you provide is a good service, they'll tell their friends. <bio>Dustin Cannon, of Next Level Enterprises, LLC is a successful Internet marketer working with top leaders in the home business and Internet marketing industry.
Vacation Rentals: A Budget-friendly Solution

Vacation rentals, London tourists should know, are one of the easiest ways to stay in the city without breaking the bank. If you cringe at the hotel prices of cities such as Seoul or Moscow, for example, then you would be alarmed at how much everything costs in London.

This is how vacation rentals London-style works: a landlord leases to you an apartment, fully furnished and ready for occupation. Use of apartments like these are more long-term than hotel stays, so vacation rentals, London-style, may be availed of for three days or longer. In exchange, you pay a sum that covers not your daily stay, but the entire duration of your visit.

Vacation Rentals: Options

A gaggle of lodging options are available for tourists who are considering the vacation rentals London has to offer. There are one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments. However, if you want to experience first-hand the colorful traditions and history of London, then why not explore other options?

The vacation rentals London proffers are not limited to modern apartments. Other excellent options include properties that belong to the National Trust and Landmark Trust. These two are organizations that safeguard historic buildings and estates sprawled throughout Britain. They rent these out to vacationers. So, if you are adventurous enough to prefer the historic to the convenient, then you should leap at this opportunity to relieve a piece of history. You could stay in a cozy farm cottage or inside a 500-year-old castle.

Vacation Rentals: At the Heart of the Bustle

The good thing about the vacation rentals London districts provide is that these are very close to the most visited tourist attractions, most of which are in Central London. These include Westminster Abbey and a dozen of theaters, museums, and old structures. These lodgings are found close to the shopping districts, too. Price is definitely one of the less savory things about London, but many tourists go shopping, nonetheless, because the products sold in London are of the highest quality. The West End of London, particularly Trafalgar Square, is a world-renowned shopping area.

In planning your London vacation, remember to make not just flight and lodging arrangements, but also transportation provisions as well. Many websites, such as http:www.Holiday4You.com offer free information about London's vacation rentals and public transport, be this road, rail, air, or water. Oh, and while in London, you must never forget to take a cab. London cabbies are as much a distinctive part of the city as its <bio>Looking for vacation rentals in London ( http://www.holiday4you.com/arizona.htm )?
Everyone who has a child or a close relative in college in Boston knows just how hard it can be to find accommodations in the city for special weekends. Graduation weekend is a particularly big problem, but other weekends witness the same problem, such as move-in weekend as well as various homecomings and parents' weekends. At these times, Boston hotels come at a premium price and usually are the only ones available.

Sometimes it is not even possible to find a lodging that has any rooms available. Parents and others going to Boston for one of these weekends are encouraged to find and book their accommodations with plenty of time to spare. Waiting too long will either mean staying in a hotel located miles and miles away or staying within the city but in a room that leaves much to be desired.

U.S. colleges and universities publish their yearly schedules long before the weekend events are upon the students and parents. Theoretically, giving this much time in advance before an actual event should allow everyone plenty of time to secure accommodations, but a lot of people traveling to see their loved ones graduate wait until the last minute to look for places to stay.

Boston hotels are frequently overbooked on these special weekends, because there are simply so many schools within the city and in nearby Cambridge as well. The colleges and universities are not limited to the city proper, but are sprawled out over the greater metropolitan area. Weekends in May leave parents and students haggard at a time when everyone should be celebrating the accomplishments of earning a degree.

Although there are often problems in finding accommodations, there are quite a number of lodgings in the greater metropolitan area. However, because Boston hotels are spread out all over the metropolitan area, it is useful to consider and decide on the neighborhood where you want to spend the most time prior to beginning your accommodations search. Location is important in an area as large as this. Of course, travelers want their rooms to be suitable, but it is also important to find accommodations within a close distance to where you will be spending your days and evenings while in the city.

Frequently talked about as a small city, the home of Boston University, Boston College, Emerson College, and Harvard University is anything but quaint. Although the subway and bus system within the city and surroundings are quite developed, that does not mean that you will want to spend an hour each morning getting to your son or daughter's school. Like any other major city, the traffic here is just about unbearable, especially during the morning and evening commutes and during special occasion events such as baseball games and graduations of large universities.

Essen Travel can help you find affordable, convenient Boston hotels for your son or daughter's special weekend. Its search engine gives you several options to narrow your search such as price and major landmark. Each result lists amenities that come with the lodging.
When writing in the English language, there are rules that must be followed in order for the reader to understand the text. Without writing rules, words would be sprawled all over the page without making much sense, but with these rules in place, what is on the page can be processed and a mental image be developed. Otherwise, English-speaking people would be intellectually deficient due to the lack of quality reading materials.

Spelling

Spelling is one of the most important things when writing because misspelled words can ruin the credibility of the person who wrote them. Following such rules as "I before E except after C or when it sounds like A as in neighbor or neigh" can help in the spelling of words, especially if the writer is not sure which comes first =96 the I or the E.

Punctuation

Punctuation is very important in making a sentence read correctly. The most common punctuation mistake is the placement of the comma. Sometimes people are called "comma happy" because they have commas every five words. This isn't necessary because commas are supposed to be used to separate the parts of sentences that stand by themselves, such as parenthetical sentences. An example of a parenthetical sentence: "There was so much candy, not that I minded, but I knew I couldn't eat it all alone." Also, avoid using commas after conjunctions such as "and" and "but."

The run-on sentence

It is only appropriate that run-on sentences be listed next under punctuation because it is due to lack of punctuation that a run-on sentence is born. An example of a run-on sentence is: "We went down to the store to get some candy but they didn't have the kind we wanted so we went to the next store and they didn't have what we wanted either so we decided to go home when we saw a store we had never seen before and it had exactly what we wanted." Try saying that one without taking a breath. Okay, you might be able to do it and it might make sense, but it will read a lot better with some punctuation. Two or three sentences could be formed out of that run-on sentence with a couple periods, a comma, and added words to make it read less choppy.

Capitalization

There are some who think that the words at the beginning of sentences are the only ones worthy of capitalization. People and places, referred to as proper names, should be capitalized and so should acronyms and titles.

Tense

When referring to the time, tense is very important. The time period in the whole piece of writing should be consistent. When talking about yesterday, the entire piece should stay in yesterday unless the reader is being brought into today. A sentence that reads, "He missed the bus yesterday and he is mad" is not correct. The correct tense is, "He missed the bus yesterday and he was mad." True, he might still be mad today, but chances are the sentence is not speaking of today.

These 5 rules are amongst the many grammar rules that exist, but they do tend to be the worst offenses that can compromise the quality of the content. The reader can become frustrated and the writer makes it obvious that they were napping during English grammar class when these basic rules were discussed. By building a strong foundation with the basics, other rules will fall into place with practice. Before long, the writing is of a better quality and the reader understands everything. <bio>http://www.englishlink.com/index_ENG_HTML.asp Learn English in the Comfort of your own home! http://www.englishlink.com/aboutus_ENG_HTML.asp Learning English online has never been so comfortable and easy. If being curled up is his favourite sleeping style, then we recommend lounger dog beds. However, if he likes to sleep sprawled out, we suggest pillow or mat style dog beds.

If it is cold where your dog sleeps a heater will keep him warm and comfortable. It may be that your pet suffers from arthritis or other disability that would most certainly benefit from an orthopaedic dog bed.

There's soft cushion or pillow type dog beds, plus a huge selection of sleeping mats and pads, some of which are electrically heated. You can also choose from raised dog beds and couches or as mentioned, wooden framed and orthopaedic beds.

So many dog beds to choose from to keep your beloved pooch happy!

There's a leading range of high quality dog beds at: My Pet Dog Supplies - and all the advice, tips and information you'll need to make the right choice of dog bed for your pet.

Here's - Seven Quick Tips for Buying Dog Beds from our leading supplier...

1.
Nestled along San Francisco Bay, the Bay Area boasts of one of the finest natural harbor in the world, which has a total area of around 450 square miles. Home to almost 8 million people, the San Francisco Bay Area provides the only real break in the coastal mountains of California making it one of the most ideal spot for living within the state. It is divided into 6 sub-regions (North Bay, San Francisco, East Bay, Peninsula, South Bay, and Santa Cruz) and composed of 10 counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, and Sonoma).

North Bay is a sub-region north of the Golden Gate Bridge, is separated by water from the rest of the Bay Area. It has numerous affluent communities and is probably the least urbanized among the 6 sub-regions. North Bay has many undeveloped parks, farmlands, and plantations. One popular location is Napa Valley, which is well-known for the world class red wines produced from its vineyards.

The City and County of San Francisco was once the largest city, in terms of population in the whole Bay Area. Although it no longer holds that distinction, it remains as the traditional, cultural, financial, and urban center of the region. The most famous landmark in this area is the Golden Gate Bridge, which spans the Golden Gate Strait, a water passage connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The bridge connects the city/county of San Francisco with Marin County in the North Bay.

The East Bay area is split into 2 regions, the Inner East Bay and the Outer East Bay. Inner East Bay, located along the bay's coastline, is more urban, densely populated, and has a more ethnically diverse population. Old buildings in the area suggest that it is one of the oldest developed regions. Outer East Bay, on the other hand, is composed of inland valleys separated from the Inner East Bay by hills and mountains. Its development dates back to less than 60 years ago and is mostly suburban to rural.

San Francisco Peninsula (or simply Peninsula) is the area between East Bay and San Francisco. It is composed of a series of towns, small cities, and suburban communities along San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

South Bay is the sub-region where the past blends well with the present and the future. The past is typically characterized by the city of San Jose, the oldest city in California, while the present and the future could be gleaned from the products churned by Silicon Valley. In 1990, San Jose became the most populated city in the area.

Santa Cruz, although regarded by most as part of Monterey Bay Area, some agencies and records show it as a part of San Francisco Bay Area. It is sprawled along San Francisco Peninsula, Santa Cruz Mountains, and Monterey Bay.

With tourism being the region's leading industry, the Bay Area is teeming with tourist destinations and historic landmarks. It is one of the wealthiest regions in the United States. Of the 280 metropolitan areas nationwide, the Bay Area has the highest median household income with $62,024. Six of the top ten places in California with the highest per capita income could also be found in the Bay Area. These figures are a testament of the boundless opportunities available for the citizens residing in the region.

With its idyllic setting and mild climate, living in the Bay Area is an investment that you can never be wrong about. <bio>Visit the beautiful State of California http://www.stateof-california.com/popular-city/popular-city.html, California information and places to visit with the entire family or business.
The Island Hideaway of Bangaram island resort is some 200 miles from Kerala to the south west of India in the Arabian Sea, and is one of the Lakshadweep Islands. Normally it is accessed by a flight from Cochin to Agatti, then onward by boat for a 90 minute ride. Getting onto the boat at Agatti is an experience in itself, as you get onto a raft, and then they tow you out to the boat!! You immediately feel this is a true hideaway holiday, and your tropical island resort is going to be a bit different. Take good advice and fly Kingfisher and not Indian Airlines for reliability.

It is the perfect romantic honeymoon getaway, a lush green uninhabited island covered in coconut groves, and shaped like a teardrop. It is surrounded by pristine white sand and a huge lagoon, and is part of a coral atoll with another three islands, all of which can easily be reached form Bangaram, by outboarding, sailing or rowing, kayaking or windsurfing if you find the need to be energetic.

It is probably the way the Maldives were before mass tourism arrived, because the coral reefs are ablaze with colour and packed with fish because as yet they are relatively unexplored.

If you want a tropical vacation on an island hideaway, or a romantic honeymoon getaway, then Bangaram could be your ideal destination or as part of a package including time in the Kerala part of India.

You need to understand that this island hideaway, whilst perfect for a romantic honeymoon getaway, or for people who want to play at being castaways, it isn't at all for people looking for luxury. If you need the trappings of a five star resort, just don't go.

Bangaram itself consists of 30 huts which includes a number of family huts in twin/double cottages. There are no televisions, telephones or air-conditioning, and to complete the island getaway feeling there are no newspapers so you will be completely out of effective contact with the stresses of the modern world. Each hut is tiled, on the beach, and has a palm thatched veranda, ensuite bathroom, ceiling fan and a fridge. The accommodation is simple but very comfortable, but please note there is no hot water!!

The epicentre of Bangaram Island resort is the restaurant hut which has been built around a central pole and made of bamboos and palm fronds. The food at the resort for lunch and dinner is a bit Indian, and a bit Continental, and very much seafood based. The food is without exception outstanding.

Breakfast includes cereals, eggs, Indian dishes and a lot of fresh fruit.

At night there is a barbecue on the beach, and the chance to eat outside overlooking the moon shining on the lagoon Bangaram Island resort is the only place where alcohol is permitted in the Lakshadweep Islands, and the beach bar is the centre of the evening activity. It serves beer and cocktails and will remain open until the guests have had enough!!

You will find the staff at this island hideaway very courteous and helpful, there is even a volleyball match played between staff and guests.

There is little doubt that Bangaram Island Hideaway makes for a romantic honeymoon because of its ambiance. It is a place to come, to totally relax. The only noise you will really hear is the murmur of conversation. You can do nothing a little or a little more. Choose from snorkeling, diving, swimming in the lagoon, massages and volleyball. From sailing or rowing, kayaking or windsurfing. There is an activity center, so you can play on board games, or take a book and read it, whilst sprawled on one of the many hammocks or relaxed on a sun bed.

If you want to dive, the diving is spectacular, with unspoilt coral, and incredibly clear water.

What an island hideaway in the Lakshadweep Islands is Bangaram Island resort. Perfect as part of a romantic honeymoon package and perfect for families who just want a simple castaway tropical island vacation. <bio>Peter Stewart writes exclusively for http://www.in-kenyasafari.com as well as http://www.worldwidevacationspots.com and he has in depth knowledge of the places he writes about </bio>

Most people in the world have heard of Pompeii, Italy, the site of one of the worst natural disasters of ancient times. One of the greatest finds in the history of the city was made in July, 2005, when an archaeologist checking on the progress of a new motorway being built in the area dug up the remains of a man lying next into an ancient Roman basket containing silverware. While the silverware and numerous articles such as pottery and paintings have been commonly found amongst the ruins, this was on of the few times that a Roman basket had been unearthed, although the container and its contents were somewhat melted together.

To understand the significance of this find, you must first understand what happened in Pompeii on August 24, 79 A.D. The city was a busy seaport and a summer resort area for wealthy Romans who wished to get away from the demands of living in Rome itself and was located at the base of Mount Vesuvius, an active yet mostly quiet volcano. Estimations of the population at the time of the disaster vary, although most experts agree that thee probably approximately 20,000 people living in the area at the time. In the past few years, earthquakes were a common occurrence, so when the ground began to shake on that fateful August day, most of the residence ignored it (much as Californians do today). Suddenly, Vesuvius awoke and began to erupt.

The people became panicked as they tried to reach safety. While many fled to the seaport, others took their chances trying to journey overland. Still other individuals sought shelter within their homes, not realizing that they would remain there through eternity. The high intensity heat and the amount of ash in the air soon eliminated anyone who had remained in the area.

The volcano eventually buried the town with layers of ash and pumice, where it remained buried for 1700 years, until it was rediscovered in 1748 and excavation was begun. The buildings were the first to be exposed, as well as statues, fountains, and gardens. As the archaeologists began to explore deeper into the structures and streets, they began to uncover the heartbreaking remains of the residents of this ancient city, laying sprawled face down or, as in one case, appearing to be sitting and praying. It seems that the ash had formed a casing around the individuals that had been buried in the eruption. Although their remains had long since decomposed, the outlines of their bodies were still visible, some of these even showing the looks of suffering that was apparent on these poor souls' faces.

As well as finding the inhabitants' bodies, the archaeologists found a treasure trove of daily utensils and household items that could give them an idea of what daily life was like 2000 years ago. Most of the artifacts that remained were made of metal, marble or other materials that could easily withstand the heat of the molten lava that was exuding from Vesuvius.

It is for this reason that the Roman wicker basket that was found was so exciting. It would seem that the man who was found lying next to it was trying to escape Pompeii's devastation and had crawled underneath a stairwell with his valuables. The sheltered design of this area helped to protect the basket from being destroyed. Although it is not in perfect shape, the archaeologists are treating the fibers with different chemicals to preserve that material that it was made of, with the hopes of displaying this rare container with the rest of the Pompeii exhibit in the near future.

Pompeii is one of the largest tourist attractions in all of Italy. If you wish to get a peek into the lives of ancient Romans as well as to experience the emotional aspects of the disaster, it is a trip that you will not soon forget.<bio>We have baby gift baskets that are cute and practical. Be it on a stag weekend in Budapest or a stag weekend in Krakow (two of the coolest new Eastern European stag weekend destinations) your weekend can take a variety of sophisticated and stimulating forms. Activities such as wine tasting, caving, fencing, city tours are proving as interesting to some visitors as the more adrenalin-fuelled Kalashnikov shooting, Trabant tours or paint-balling stripper fests.

On a Budapest Stag weekend you have the option to take a break from all the fun and frolicking with a city tour for example. A three-hour guided bus tour to all the major sights, including the Castle District, Heroes' Square and the Basilica. You'll have plenty of photo opportunities and the chance to crash course your knowledge on the city ready for any questions when you get home.

If you don't fancy an organised trip one of the best things to do in Budapest is to simply stroll around the city soaking up the unique atmosphere and historical architecture. Must-see sights include the Heroes' Square, the St. Stephen's Basilica and the giant Parliament building, but they are just the tip of the iceberg. The views from almost anywhere along the Danube are stunning, if you scale one of the Buda Hills (exploring the Castle District is highly recommended), you will see the whole city sprawled out in front of you.

You might prefer an afternoon sampling the sophisticated delights of Hungary's top wines as they emerge to do battle with the finest France and Italy have to offer. An expert English speaking sommelier will talk you through between 6 and nine varieties of reds, rosés, whites, and a world-famous Tokaj desert wine. There's even a large cheese and cracker platter. If you're feeling particularly highbrow, take a fencing lesson from double Olympic Silver medallist Erno Kolcsonai. Touché.

On a more relaxing note the idea of a trip to the thermal baths for some good old steam room, plunge pool and massage therapy might be more your thing. If you're that way inclined check out the tranquility of Budapest's most trendy day spas. Some organised stag weekend packages include a 60-minute massage or comparable treatment. The list of options is extensive: Watsu, Indian Stone treatment and Mauri massage.

Though regarded as more of a high-octane nightlife and girls type destination even Krakow can offer a sophisticated alternative to the stag weekend festivities. The city which has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Polish scientific, cultural and artistic life has in it's historic centre the Old Town, Kazimierz and the Wawel Castle, added to the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1978. It's absolutely beautiful and well worth exploring for time of reflection, meditation and by way of a short break from stag party mayhem.<bio>Josey Walker - The Founder and Managing Director of party organisers Stag Republic and Hen Nation.
Needing to get some exercise after surgery my wife talked me into spending Sunday afternoon's visiting one of the parks in Tulsa. We were surprised to find over 150 parks spread across the city, from tiny neighborhood "mini-parks" to sprawling recreation areas with almost every thing imaginable.

The Neighborhood Parks

Scattered across town in out of the way spots are small neighborhood parks sometimes with nothing more than an open area for kids to play football or baseball. Some will have a picnic table but they are generally small, quaint and very inviting for neighbors to gather and meet each other. With television, America's communities have grown distant, sometimes with neighbors barely knowing each other. The internet has exasperated the problem. It's not uncommon for someone to talk with people from a half-a-dozen different countries on a daily basis, online, but speak with their own neighbor once a week if even that frequently. These neighborhood parks help bring people together when our changing culture is working to spread them apart.

The Playgrounds

Tulsa has been referring to many of their parks as "playgrounds" not as a way of saying here's where kids can play, but to say here's where families can play. Typically the "playgrounds" include sports fields as well as play areas for kids often alongside picnic areas where parents can stay close and watch their kids. It's not too difficult to imagine the small children playing on the "Big Toy" while older kids play soccer, while dad joins in a game of baseball, while mom watches all of them from a picnic area strategically situated in the midst of the park. Tulsan's do like to play.

The Community Centers

On a larger scale Tulsa has several Community Centers. These are parks that also have facilities for indoor recreation. The outdoor recreation is never neglected since Tulsa's Community Centers are almost always surrounded by good sized parks with a plethora of features. The buildings offer many events year round as well as being available for smaller private events. We've had family Christmas get-togethers for my wife's rather large family at a nearby Community Center. Some even have libraries on site or nearby making them a widely functioning civic point.

The Regular Parks

And of course there are the run-of-the-mill parks which offer the typical fields, woods, sports fields and picnic areas. Both the City of Tulsa and Tulsa County do a wonderful job maintaining them and you'll find clean, well kept areas for the typical recreational needs. In order to save the taxpayers' money many are situated next to schools so they can also be used as playgrounds, making the need for keeping them safe even more important. You'll find them exactly what you need for a friendly weekend softball game, group picnic or simply a place to stretch your legs.

The Big Parks

Tulsa has always been a place that works toward large city efficiency with more of a small town friendliness. We pride ourselves on possessing Southern charm, Midwestern ruggedness and American ingenuity. There are other towns with bigger parks, but quantity isn't nearly as important as quality. From Riverparks to Mohawk park to Chandler park you can find someplace to enjoy your time outdoors with verdant woods, soft green fields, scenic jogging trails, beautiful flower gardens, enough to fill a whole lifetime.

Visit one of Tulsa's parks and you'll see a family picnicking, a college student sprawled with his books beneath a shade tree, some more college students playing frisbee golf, kids laughing in a play area, couples walking along paths trying to decide which deserves their attention-the scenic view or each other, a rabbit frolicking amidst trees and rocks, kids playing a game of softball, people swimming in one of the many swimming pools or maybe someone by themselves, just enjoying the sunshine. It's all there waiting for you. <bio>Danny Carlton is a freelance web designer who has lived in and around Tulsa for over 30 years.
On a recent early morning, I sat on the floor beside my daughter Ella, writing in my journal as she stretched and bounced in a desperate and unsuccessful attempt to reach her favorite butterfly finger puppet. Aware of Ella's growing frustration, I wrote about my own frustration with the speed at which I am moving toward one of my primary goals. Just as I wrote that, Ella's persistence overcame the force of inertia and caused her to fly forward toward the butterfly, landing face down, sprawled out, right hand beside her intended target. Unharmed, but startled by the unexpecte manner in which momentum and gravity conspired to assist her desire, she began to whimper until I picked her up and, with a big smile, congratulated her on her courageous effort.

As a charter member of the "there are no coincidences school," I could not ignore the timing of Ella's face plant. How did her action relate to my frustration? Ella's desire fueled her actions and propelled her forward toward her goal. Without the power of her desire, she probably would not have persisted, let alone, breached the barrier of inertia between her and the pink and yellow butterfly. A quick review of my goal revealed that the desire which had originally fueled me was hidden. I could feel its presence deep down inside me, but it was not actively fueling my intention.

Desire can be a scary thing. As children and young adults, we may have reached for what we wanted only to be rebuffed by parents and teachers and bosses. We discovered that it is easier, less disappointing, to keep our desires hidden from others. Unfortunately, from there it is far too easy for our desires to become hidden from ourselves.

In Crossing the Unknown Sea, David Whyte reminds us that the Latin root of desire is de sider or "of the stars." He continues:

To have a desire in life literally means to keep your star in sight, to follow a glimmer, a beacon, a disappearing will-o'-the-wisp over the horizon into some place you cannot yet fully imagine. A deeply held desire is a star that is particularly our own; it might disappear for a while, but when the skies clear we catch sight of it again and recognize the glimmer.

My personal sky had clouded over and I had lost sight of the star of my desire. It was not that my goal was wrong, but rather that I had lost touch with the guiding, shining light of desire that had originally drawn me to it.

The path leading to our goals often requires a leap of faith along the way. And occasionally when we take that leap we end up flat on our face just like little Ella. We cannot always know the manner in which our goals will be realized. The Universe conspires to connect us with our dreams and desires in unknown and unknowable ways. The fear of that unknowing can cause us to swerve off course, to lose sight of our desires.

In pursuing my goal, I had run, full speed ahead, right up to the cliff-edge of the unknown, fully intent on taking that giant step. But at the last moment, when I saw how vast the chasm truly was, I balked and skidded to a halt, peering frightfully into the empty space before me. At that moment, I became disconnected from my desire and driven by less powerful forces--need, obligation--toward my goal. With Ella's help, I found my way back to where the sky above me was clear, and I could, once again be guided by the star of desire.

You are the navigator on the journey towards your goals. And just as a navigator on an ocean voyage, you must constantly check your course. Are you still following your guiding star? Is the goal you are pursuing still aligned with your desire? The sky may cloud over at times or become stormy, but when it clears, remember to look up, to locate your guiding star and determine if you have stayed on course or drifted off.

Some months ago I received another valuable lesson from a wise teacher, this one a precocious seven year old girl. "What do you do?" she asked me. "I'm a life coach," I said. "What's that?" "I help people figure out how to get what they want," I explained, adding, "how do you get what you want?" She gave me an answer that made me realize how truly complicated we adults make the simplest things. With a little shrug of her shoulders, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, she said, "I ask!"

As the bible says, "Ask and you shall receive. . ." But remember, you cannot ask for what you want if you do not know what that is. What do you want? What are your deepest heart's desires? By discovering and following the star of your true desire you will find that your goals begin to fall easily and gracefully into place. Know what you want, ask for it, and the path will be opened for you to receive it! <bio>Edward Mills, MIM, is a life coach, teacher and speaker, empowering people to more joyfully and abundantly share their essential gifts with the world.
We sat in a glassed-off viewing lounge over-looking the water hole, anxiously waiting for darkness that would bring elephant and buffalo, rhino and bushbuck to sample the salt lick below our window.

Maybe even a Bongo would venture out of the surrounding giant bamboo and into the spot lights, I remember hoping. The San Diego Zoo, where I was public relations director at the time, didnt have the rare Bongo antelope, so I had never laid eyes on one.

Our overnight stop at The "Ark," a tree-top inn high in the Aberdare Forest of Kenya in East Africa, was a highlight of that many-years-ago camera-safari - the most memorable vacation of our life, my wife and I agree.

Hot tea was served that late afternoon as we sat wrapped in blankets to keep from freezing our buns off. It was a bit brisk at 7,600 feet when night fell in the Aberdares, the eastern wall of Africa's Great Rift Valley!

We had departed Nairobi that a.m., made a two-hour, dusty drive through Kikuyland and stopped for a hearty lunch at the Aberdare Country Club. (I had zebra meat for the first time.) Well refreshed, we piled into Land Rovers for an 11-mile bumpy ride into the forest, accompanied by an armed guard.

After debarking, we silently followed the hunter across a draw-bridge, taken up at 4 p.m., so no one could come, or leave. Then into the beautifully furnished Ark Lodge, where our 20-person group were assigned rooms (unheated but had hot-water bottles we later snuggled up to under the icy covers.)

Our group soon settled into lounge chairs on the glassed-in veranda, which featured a roaring fireplace and drinks. To enable guests to continue watching and photographing until late, the waterhole was floodlit from six p.m. to dawn, and spare blankets were provided.

Photo flashlights were not permitted, since they could startle some animals, causing them to bolt to the safety of the surrounding forest.
But we eagerly snapped photos as first a buffalo, and soon, elephants and a fierce-horned rhino were the first wildlife to wander into the small clearing to partake of the salt lick after determining the coast was clear. The close-range viewing of wildlife cautiously leaving the protection of the forest was nothing short of breathtaking.

Unique feature: A buzzer alarm in each cabin -- sounded by the game-spotter on duty to alert guests when an interesting animal appeared, or something unusual happened. My wife and I responded to the first call at midnight, but were too tired to fall out for the second buzzer at 2 a.m. I believe we missed seeing a rare genet cat.

Next morning, after a hearty breakfast (I had warthog with my egg), we resumed our three-week zoo- sponsored tour, where next, we saw the most impressive variety and numbers of wildlife yet - in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park.

This 5,700 square mile game preserve contains the world's greatest population of wild animals, if you cared to believe the booklet 200 Mau-Mau's each tried to sell me at the park's entrance. We were soon believers as we encountered prides of lions, hyena gangs, baboon families, cheetah, zebra, and antelope herds of thousands.

Our tour driver even managed to sneak our VW bus across the plains to a small clump of trees, where we excitedly photographed a rare sight -- a female leopard sprawled over several branches high in one.

When we returned home, the local CBS-TV-affiliate used 25 of these shots, including the spotted cat later vacating his snoozing place to chase a little gazelle. (No luck -- the beast instead settled for making a kill on an African hare and victoriously dragged it several hundred yards to cubs hidden in a thicket.)

We have grieved since our return those many years ago to read of the worsening of Africa's political unrest and the continuing decimation of its precious wildlife. Even I, who worked in a menagerie with 5,000 of them, came away with a new appreciation.

And as a living example of how Africa can affect you, one of our tour members, a San Diego doctor, had enjoyed big-game hunting on vacations through parts of the West. After experiencing a first-hand look at the beautiful African wildlife, so endangered, he vowed that the only hunting he'd do in the future would be with a camera! And he kept his word.

If only everyone were given our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see and learn to appreciate the danger of extinction many of these wonderful creatures face from wide-spread poaching and encroachment of their habitat, stricter measures could be taken to save them.

As it is, in another decade or two most of these species will be able to be seen only in a zoo such as San Diego's.<bio>Bill Seaton is a prize-winning author and lecturer who has served nearly 25 years as public relations director of the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld and the California State Lottery.
Alternatives to Pricey Retirement Homes

It happens to everyone with parents. One day, it will be time to take care of those who raised you. Retirement homes have long been the choice for busy families that don't have the time or the room to care for their folks. But there are other options. If you plan ahead, you hook your mom and dad up with an agreeable living situation that will make you happy, them happy, and will not break your budget.

I recently quit my job at a retirement home. By all appearances, it was a very nice retirement home. The first thing you saw when you walked in was a large elegant dining room, a winding staircase, and a grand piano in the middle of a sky-lit atrium. The average age of residents was eighty five years old, and while it was considered "independent living" most of the residents were dependent. They depended on staff to prepare them three meals a day, they depended on the bus driver for transportation (since many had given up driving) and they even depended on an activity director to schedule ways for them to pass their time (that was my job). These services were selling points for the facility, and families were willing to pay an average of four thousand ($4,000) dollars a month so mom and dad could play bingo and bridge in a nicely furnished community. Because this facility was considered independent living, the rent did not cover health services.

In the year that I worked there, I got to know many of the residents. They confided in me. I learned that many of the seniors never really felt like it was their home or even a suitable replacement. Despite the extravagant landscaping, it was still institutionalized living. A lot of them hated the food. Some were even pretending to be happy just for their children. OK, some old folks are just cranky, and you can't please them no matter what. But regardless, I couldn't help the feeling that in many ways, retirement homes are completely unnecessary and even a waste of money.

In today's tight economy, it's time to be creative and resourceful when it comes to finding a home for Mom and Dad. Rather than committing your parents (or grandparents) to expensive retirement institutions, consider these housing alternatives.

Make room at home (Seriously.)

Up until the second half of the 20th century, this is how people lived! Multiple generations lived under one roof. Make room in the basement. Convert the garage into another bedroom. Or simply plan ahead now and buy a bigger house than you need. Ever notice how big houses were in the 19th century? That's because families actually lived together. They were much more unified than they are today. In the old days, it was not unusual to have granny answer the door in her curlers. In fact, in many households, grandparents had an important and useful role in the family. I'm not sure what changed, but somehow Americans became embarrassed by their elderly relatives. It's time be proud of our families again --no matter how senile they may be!

Of course having your parents live with you works extremely well if you actually get along with them. I lucked out having really cool folks. But it can be done even if you have differences. Just make sure you have enough space for privacy. My parents are not even retired yet, but my husband and I have decided that our next house will be designed to accommodate them when the time comes. We will have an in-law suite (on the first floor of course) or a separate cottage on our property. It's important to make sure the space is accessible with walkers and wheelchairs. In my opinion, it's never too early to consider a house with extra space for aging relatives. You can always make use of the space in the meantime by renting it out, hosting an exchange student, or housing your teenage kids.

Buy the house next door (Hire home health care services as needed.)

Keep property in the family. On a business trip in Greece, I made friends with a local colleague. Before going out to dinner, she invited me to her brand new condo to meet her family. Her family lived in separate condos, but literally owned the whole building. Her great grand parents lived in the condo on the first floor, her grand parents lived on the second floor, her parents lived on the third floor and she had just gotten the deed to the fourth floor where her and her new husband lived. Why pay over four thousand ($4,000) dollars a month on a small apartment in a retirement home, when you can purchase the house next door (or the apartment below you?) Most mortgage payments are considerably cheaper than rent at a retirement community and plus your money goes toward an investment. Not to mention the sense of true independence this will provide your parents. Old people like to have their own things too.

Understandably, some seniors need special care. In this case you can hire a home health service! There are enough services out there for you to choose from a la carte. Many private health services provide drivers, nurses, and housekeepers as needed. Decide what services you and your parents really need to spend money on and employ a private company. There are many such services. You can find them online or just go to your nearest "independent living" retirement home and look through the multitude of home health care brochures. Otherwise, if your parents are close enough, you can provide meals for them and take them shopping. Of course there may be a time when seniors require full-time nursing care for serious illnesses, but in the meantime, why pay for three meals a day at Sleepy Hollow Retirement when you can keep real estate in the family?

Encourage your parents to move to a big city. (Especially a city you would want to visit!)

For the more active retirees, there are options for adventure. If you have the kind of parents that can't stand to be still, you may consider packing them up and sending them off. The complaint I heard to most when working in a retirement home was how much the residents missed their cars. They hated giving up their wheels and missed being able to go wherever they want when they want. Subsequently, there is an increasing trend of seniors moving to large cities so they can take advantage of public transportation. While many people have sprawled out to the suburbs, it makes sense for driving impaired seniors to choose an urban setting. living in the heart of a metropolitan area means you don't need a car, plus there are many things to do and see.

Send your parents to college.

If your parents have an active mind, think about getting them a dorm on a college campus. That's right, some colleges are now catering to seniors and even offering free classes and discounts on amenities such as golf and tennis. Who needs bingo night when you can take a French class, go to a football game, or see a theatre performance? Research has shown that mental activity may prevent dementia. So, for those seniors considering an "institutional lifestyle," they may as well choose a college campus over a retirement home. The cost of senior dorms vary. Depending on the housing package, some dorms may be just as expensive as retirement homes. But hey, if you plan on forking out rent for a home, renting a room on a lively college campus sure beats the activity department of any retirement home.

Help your parents escape the country.

Retiring abroad may be an appealing choice for seniors who are looking to stretch their dollars. If they insist on enlisting in a retirement community, look at places like Mexico. In fact, many retirement homes in Mexico cater to the American market. One major pitfall of course, is that you won't get to see them as often. But look at it this way, you'd have a cool place to visit. A few years ago, a lady from England made news for choosing to live out her golden years on a cruise ship. 86-year-old Bea Muller of Florida was aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2 in 2000 when her husband died. She didn't want to move back home to live alone and she didn't want to live in a retirement home. So, she decided to sell everything and book herself for a world cruise one year at a time. In her case, with all the amenities, it actually worked out cheaper than assisted living.

Of course there may be that rare instance where your parents insist on living in a retirement home. They may actually want to have a 400 square foot apartment, collect "funny money," endure Elvis impersonators, and rely on a one-size-fits all activity calendar for fun. But this is doubtful. Most people want to remain as independent as possible for as long as they can. Most people want to be an active member of a family or community. No matter how old and senile, there are certainly plenty of options for giving them that opportunity outside a cookie-cutter retirement home.<bio>April Norhanian is the editor of http://www.halfpastnine.com Life and Leisure in the Metro Atlanta Suburbs.</bio>
