During the exodus of the people of Israel, God guided them on their path. The people of Israel did not go in the direction that they wanted; they followed the way that God marked out for them with the cloud.

The Scriptures reveal that this cloud was not something, but rather someone... "Where is the one who brought Israel through the sea, with Moses as their shepherd? Where is the one who sent his to be among his people? ...As with cattle going down into a peaceful valley, the gave them rest. You led your people, Lord (Is. 63:11--14, NLT).

By saying, "who sent his Holy Spirit to be among his people" and "the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest. You led your people, Lord..." Isaiah points that the cloud was a representation, or a symbol of the Holy Spirit.

Very often, our slavery to programs obstructs us from seeing what the Holy Spirit desires to do (programs and structures are necessary, but they must be subject to us, not the other way around).

As ministers, we must pay close attention to God's leading, before and during the service. He is not predictable as we are. The way the Lord leads could be different every time. The path is not the same from one day to the next, and the direction that worked yesterday may not be the one that works today. (When using the word "Way" or "Path" I'm referring to a specific direction given by the Holy Spirit, before or during the service).



Moving With the Cloud

The people of Israel moved when the cloud moved. When it rested in a place, they rested until it moved again.



"When the cloud lifted from over the sacred tent, the people of Israel followed it. And wherever the cloud settled, the people of Israel camped. In this way, they traveled at the Lord's command and stopped wherever he told them to" (Num. 9:17- 18, NLT. See also Ex. 40:36-37)."

Israel had to daily observe the cloud. They were in the desert and didn't know the way. They depended on the cloud to keep them from getting lost or taking the wrong turn. The book of Numbers declares: "they traveled at the Lord's command." The cloud revealed when to move, in what direction, and when to stop.

When leading corporate worship, sensitivity to the Holy Spirit it's key. He knows what the congregation needs... If we make room for Him, He will give us new songs, words and heavenly melodies that will change the atmosphere and renew the strength of His people.

I frequently hear these questions from my clients and from people who attend my workshops and intensives. Everyone who is on a spiritual path wants to experience the of Spirit in his or her life. We want to know that we are not alone. We want to know that we are being loved and guided in our highest good each and every moment of our lives.

How can we have this experience?

Sometimes we have this experience accidentally. We might be feeling particularly open - like when we are walking in nature or hugging a child or a pet. At those times, we might feel a wonderful warmth within our and a deep sense of wellbeing. Creative ideas or might pop into our mind when we are in this state. This is an experience of the Presence of Spirit.

But it is not enough for many of us for this to happen occasionally. We want this in our lives all the time. What can we do to consciously open ourselves to an experience of the Presence of Spirit?

The love, compassion, peace, joy, and truth that is Spirit is . It is what we live in and is the essence of what lives within us. But in order to experience it, we have to be open to it. Our hearts and minds have to be open to receiving the Presence of Spirit.

Whether or not we have an experience of the Presence of Spirit depends upon our INTENT. When our intent is to protect against pain by trying to control ourselves, others, and outcomes, our heart closes. When our intent is to learn about loving ourselves and others, our heart opens. We cannot experience the Presence of Spirit when our heart is closed.

Our desire to learn with our spiritual Guidance about loving ourselves and others opens the heart and invites in the Presence of Spirit. Our intent to learn is the most powerful doorway to the Presence of Spirit. Once you have chosen the intent to learn, there are other doorways that can facilitate the opening of the heart.

GRATIATUDE AND APPRECIATION

The choice to express gratitude and appreciation for the everyday blessings in our lives opens the heart. A sincere prayer of gratitude for the food you eat or the beauty of nature, or a sincere "thank you" for another's kindness will open your heart and bring in the feeling of fullness and wellbeing that is the experience of the Presence of Spirit.

If you are having trouble opening to learning, you might try focusing on what you are grateful for and what you deeply appreciate. This may open your heart enough to move into learning about love.

ACCEPTANCE

When you choose to accept what is rather than continue to attempt to control things over which you have no control - such as how others feel about you or the outcome of things - you will feel a sense of inner peace. This opens the door to being able to learn about the part of you that keeps trying to control. Learning about the controlling part of you rather than judging this part of you opens the heart and allows in the love and compassion of Spirit.

KINDNESS

Kind acts toward your self and others will open the heart. Kindness is an invitation to the Presence of Spirit to fill your heart. Choosing kindness is a powerful doorway to the Presence of Spirit.

When you choose to express gratitude and appreciation, and you choose to accept yourself and others, and you choose to be kind to yourself and others, and you choose to open to learning about loving yourself and others - you will experience peace and joy, which are clear indications of the Presence of Spirit. You remember, of course, that Paul believed that Jesus' blood took care of the sin problem for the human race.

Now here are his three dynamite questions and their obvious answers.

Question #1: "Did the Galatians receive the by the works of the law or by the hearing of ?" Galatians 3:2. In other words, can you work to receive the Spirit or is that a product of believing on Jesus and receiving Him (by faith) as your ? Of course, receiving the Spirit comes by faith upon receiving Jesus as savior.

Works have nothing to do with it. Paul's logic, then, forces the conclusion that works of the law have nothing to do with the removal of our and feelings of unworthiness for our sins. This is solely through Jesus' blood which is God's supreme act of grace. The blood of Jesus is appropriated by faith and not by works at all

Question #2: "Since they started out by the Spirit, what makes them think they can switch from the Spirit to the flesh to continue their Christian experience? What makes them think they can switch from the Spirit to the fleshly works of the Law to finish out their Christian experience?" Galatians 3:3.

They can't. Therefore, Jesus' blood, applied to us by the Spirit through faith, will take care of our guilt and unworthiness problem. Consequently, Christians who rest and trust in Jesus' blood refuse to be brought under bondage for unworthiness caused by the guilt of their sins.

Consequently, they will not let these feelings of guilt and unworthiness interfere with God's blessings of healing, prosperity, family well being and salvation contained in the for them.

Question #3: "Did the one who ministers the Spirit to them and works miracles among them do these things by the hearing of faith or by the works of the law?" Galatians 3:5. Of course, he did these things by faith and not by the works of the law.

Paul's logic, here, forces the conclusion that (1) since these Galatians received the Spirit by faith and not by works of the Law, (2) since they cannot switch from the Spirit to works of the Law to maintain their Christian life and (3) since the ones ministering the Spirit and works miracles among them continue to do them by faith and not by works of the Law, then neither can the Galatians arbitrarily switch from salvation by faith in Jesus to salvation by works of the Law. Neither can they attempt to follow any mixture of faith and works.

>From the preceding, obviously Paul believed that Jesus' blood took care of everything. His blood was the grace of God in action. His blood took care of the guilt and feelings of unworthiness for all our sins. To add one thing to this heavenly formula in the form of any religious work that we must do to get our guilt and unworthiness removed would void God's grace and render Jesus' death useless and meaningless.

This is why Jesus had to come and die for all of us - because of our sins, because of our sin nature, and because of all of our character flaws and imperfections.

Just realize who you really are in Christ and learn to grow and mature in your walk with Him and try to keep your temper tantrums and pity parties to a bare minimum. This life is way too short to be wallowing in wrestling matches with the Lord, holding grudges against Him, and questioning some of the decisions He may have made with your life.

Realize that God the Father always knows best, trust that He has made the right decisions in the way that He has been handling your life, and press on into the calls and divine assignments that He has set up for you to walk in with what little time you still have left down here.

You only get one chance in the eternal scheme of things to accomplish God's perfect will for your life down here on this earth. Don't blow it or lose it because you have been wrestling with God over all of these years over issues that you will end up finding out later on were a complete waste of time to be arguing with Him in the first place.

Remember, God is perfect - you are not! God always knows best - you do not! God can see into you future - you cannot! For Christians, this poses a major dilemma. One of the ways of our God is that He is a very patient and longsuffering God. His ways are not our ways. And one of the things you will find out very early on about His ways is that He works on a much slower time frame than we do. And unless you learn to adjust to His slower way of working things out - you will find yourself easily losing your patience with Him and how He wants to work things out in your life.

God operates on a much longer and slower time frame than we are used to operating in the fast paced world in which we live in. You will really have to work with the on this particular quality to get it properly worked up into your soul. The reason for this is that your own impatience will start to act up and try to override the patience and longsuffering that the Holy Spirit will try and transmit to you. At times, it may become of - your will against His will.

But once the Holy Spirit starts to try and manifest this quality up into your personality, then you have to try and move with it and allow it to get worked into your mind and emotions. If you do, then His patience will start to override your impatience, and before you know it, your fuses will start to lengthen and you won't lose your patience like you used to do.

What kind of leading is available? Well, listen to the prophet Isaiah: "Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way, walk in it,' whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left (Is. 30:21).

Another illustration of the 's leading is found in the book of Ezekiel, he had a vision of the glory of the Lord and saw how the heavenly Cherubs moved: "Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went." (Ez.1:12, ). The phrase "Wherever the spirit would go, they would go" indicates dependence and obedience to the Spirit's leadership.



Seeing what the Father is Doing

: 'I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does' (Jn. 5:19, NIV). Jesus also said: "Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit" John 3:6 NIV. The journey into prophetic worship starts by identifying all that is flesh in our ministry, repenting of it and start seeking what the Holy Spirit births...

To go deeper into this we need to grow in intimacy with God. When we spend time in His presence, our heart becomes sensitive and our dependence on the Holy Spirit grows.



Growing in Confidence While Making Mistakes

To avoid presenting the wrong picture, I would like to end this article by bringing some balance about following the direction of the Spirit of God in a service...

Many times I have made mistakes in an attempt to follow His direction, thinking that He was going "south" and finding out later that He was going "north." You know what? Knowing myself, there are countless chances of future mistakes. But I have found a truth that sets me free every time--The Lord is not intolerant.

He tolerates mistakes...

If you are not convinced of this, I invite you to study the life of the disciples. You will be shocked when you discover to whom Jesus gave the keys of the kingdom of Heaven. Get this: He did not take them back when this person severely failed.

As long as you have a willing spirit and readiness to learn, don't be afraid of getting it wrong, you will make mistakes trying to follow His direction, so, don't get discouraged when it happens. Learn from your mistakes and keep following Him. Throw away and refuse all religious tension, condemnation, insecurity and have plain confidence in Jesus who deeply loves you. Trust his Holy Spirit who is eager to help you. Otherwise, you will be afraid to move, enslaved by fear and without initiative.

Trust the Lord and be encouraged! Like Paul prayed: "May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word" (2 Thes. 2:16-17 NIV).
