A garden full of lush and blooming flowers in lively hues is such a sight to behold. When we have our very own garden and we see gardens like these, we can't help but feel desirous to also have one like it. Of course, everybody wants to have a garden that is beautifully ornamented with plants and flowers to be the envy of the neighbors. But the goal of having lush plants and flowers is not easy to achieve. Certain plants and flowers are expensive and it would be a waste if they would just die and wouldn't be given the chance to grow in your garden. So before you go on buying different plants and bulbs that you plan to have in your little "garden of Eden", there are certain things that you have to know especially if you are a novice when it comes to gardening.

First and foremost, it is important for you to check the soil of the area or areas where you plan to plant your flowers and plants. Certain plants don't just thrive anywhere. They require certain types of soil in order for it to survive. You need to know what type the soil is and it needs to be analyzed if it has enough nutrients to help the plants grow or produce flowers.

If you already have in mind the plants or flowers that you would want in your garden, it is important that you know what they need in order to flourish. Be in the know on what soil condition it needs to thrive in. If the soil you have is not suited then better select another one for chances of its survival will be slim. However, you could ask for certain remedies that could help. For example, roses like to thrive in acidic soil. If the soil is not acidic enough you can add humus or better yet sulfur to raise the acidity level of the soil. When buying plants, find out what it needs for it to grow and flourish.

Aside from having a good soil for your plants to grow in, fertilizers still play an important role. Think of fertilizers as vitamins for your plants. Fertilizers can help your plants grow fast by providing nutrients that may be lacking in the soil. We would want our plants to be healthy and to live long.

Now that you have a general idea of what it entails to have that coveted garden, get it going and in no time, you will be rewarded the fruits of your labor. <bio>Lanny Hintz writes about Irises coupons flower, Henry Fields Vaucher and http://www.flowergardennursery.com </bio>

Most every gardener strives to grow the best, most stunning flowers around, but that goal is hard to get hold of. Whether you want to raise prize-winning blooms or just have a home garden filled with of beautiful flowers, there are some things you can do in order to ensure your garden is in the best shape possible.

Soil chemistry counts The chemical make-up of the soil is one of the biggest factors that contribute to the success or failure of your garden. If the soil in your planting beds is poor in nutrients, it is unlikely that your plants will thrive or produce those beautiful flowers that you want until you enrich the soil with the nutrition the plants need.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that the soil chemistry is the same all over your yard. It is important to test the soil in each area of your property that you plan to plants, especially if the areas are away from each other. This can be important if part of your property is on a slope, or if it has been used for other things in the past.

The slope of the land and the soil type in your area are important considerations to make. A complete analysis of the soil in your yard will give you a good place to starts and a help you to monitor the quality of the soil as your garden matures.

Know what your plants will need to thrive You probably already have an idea about what you want to plant in your garden, so it is important that you understand what those plants will require in order to grow and flourish. Although many types of annuals, perennials, and bulbs can grow and thrive in a broad range of soil and weather conditions, others can have special requirements for food, water, and soil conditions.

For example, if you are interested I n cultivating roses in your garden, you will need to know the pH level of your soil, and adjust it if you need to. Roses are commonly acid loving plants, and therefore they will not thrive in soil with a higher alkaline level. Getting some humus and tilling it into the soil can amend alkaline soil. If the humus does not do the job, adding sulfur to the soil can raise the acidity level.

Keeping an eye on nutrition The nutrients in the soil will dictate the health and vitality of your plants and flowers. If the phosphorus and nitrogen levels, as well as the presence of other types of organic matter are not sufficient, your plants may be malnourished, and not thrive at all. Nutrients can be added to poor soil by suing humus or any number of good-quality fertilizers.

Now you understand why the chemistry of your garden soil is so important in growing your ideal garden. Having the best flowers around is a big task to fulfill. Make sure that your garden soil is ready for the duty. <bio>To learn more about flower gardening and receive a free flower gardening report visit http://www.discover-flower-gardening.info </bio>

To start you need a container and some soil to pot your plant.

Pot

You want a pot that is large enough to hold your indoor plant, the potting soil with a little extra room for water and growth. Do not start with a pot that is a lot larger than the plant as you will not see any growth on top. A pot that is too large can also cause root disease as a result of the excess moisture retained in the soil. A container that is too small will obviously restrict a plant's growth. You also want a pot with drainage holes. If you were to over-water, which may happen, the water sitting on the bottom of the pot will cause many problems for your plant. Plants in containers without drainage openings stay wet longer so if you do not have drainage holes and don't want to put any in, you should at minimum cover the bottom with pebbles so the water can sit away from the roots and be absorbed slowly.

These days pots come in many different materials -- clay, ceramic. plastic, fiberglass etc. Clay is still considered the best container for house plants as it provides excellent aeration for plant roots. FYI - Most plants you purchase already come in a clay pot. A clay pot is very porous and its walls hold moisture and nutrients for the plant roots. I recommend using a clay pot and inserting it into another container for decorative or practical purposes.

Soil

Potting soil is a mix of rich organic material such as peat, compost, vermiculite and barks designed especially for plants growing in containers. You can buy quality potting soil at your local nursery. You may also want to purchase organic potting soil which is not much more expensive these days. Just be sure to ask for soil that is porous, allows root growth, is fast draining and holds moisture. A tip - if the bag of soil is very heavy, it is not the one to buy. If you are very ambitious you can mix your own potting soil. I will post potting soil recipes on my site shortly.

Just remember correctly potting you plant is a key step, along with watering, fertilizing, and providing sufficient light in ensuring its healthy. <bio>Ann is a home based business entrepreneur who researches various topics and reviews internet products.
Watering of course is essential for your indoor plants to thrive. Over and under watering your plant can be very harmful so you need to learn first when to water and second how to water.

As a general rule plants with very thin leaves or very large leaves are going to require more frequent watering. The best way to determine whether your plant needs water is to feel the soil. Do not go by looks or by how dry the surface soil feels. You will need to get your hands dirty. Since indoor plant roots cover the bottom two thirds of the pot, put your finger into the soil approximately one third into the pot. For example for a standard 6 inch pot you need to feel the soil about 2 inches down. When this part of the soil feels almost dry it is time to water. If you have to struggle to push your finger into the soil it means that the soil mixture is not porous enough or the plant has become root bound. To solve this problem you will need to re-pot the plant.

Ideally if you could collect some rain water to use for your indoor plants they will definitely thank you. This can be done very easily by placing a large bucket on your patio or roof. If that is not possible, try to use room temperature water only. Cold water can stunt the growth of your plant. Pour the water slowly on the surface until it drains out of the bottom of the pot. Remember the bottom two thirds contains the roots so you want to ensure they get sufficient saturation. The draining also helps wash out excess salts and fertilizer residue. You do not want the plant to sit in this water as this can cause root rot and kill the plant. After this thorough watering wait for the soil to dry out as explained above. Most plants will require watering about once a week only.

If during watering you notice that the soil is pulling away from the sides of the pot, it is an indication that you have allowed the plant to dry out too much between waterings. You can place the plant in a shallow water container so the plant can absorb enough water to fully saturate the roots. You can even re-pot it at this time. Do not allow this extremely dry condition to re-occur though. <bio>Ann is a home based business entrepreneur who researches various topics and reviews internet products.
Gardening is a pleasure activity as seen by most people. Many believe that only people who have lots of spare time and nothing to do take up gardening. However, this is not true. Gardening can be done by any one irrespective of age, region or any other discrimination. Gardening is an activity which is practiced by people who want to make their lawn look attractive. It is also cost effective and can be practiced by anyone.

The good thing about gardening is that you need not spend a lot of money to bring up a good garden. Some people spend huge amounts of money to decorate their patios or lawns by incorporating some artificial decorations. Gardening helps you save all the time and money invested in such expensive undertakings.

The positive thing about gardening is that you don't even need a vast space of land to grow a garden. Flower plants can also be grown in containers or polystyrene boxes. All you need to do is make a hole at the bottom of the box for draining the excess water.

Then soil from which rocks and weeds have been removed and which has been nicely broken up must be filled in the container. There are 3 types of soil available for this purpose:

Sandy soil: This type of soil loses water very fast. Hence some peat should be added to it to increase its water retention capacity. In some cases, lime must also be added to the sandy soil to neutralize its acidity.

Loamy soil: This type of soil holds moisture for a greater amount of time than the sandy soil.

Clay soil: This type of soil holds moisture for the longest period amount the three. Organic matter or peat is to be added to this soil to prevent it from becoming too hard after planting.

Addition of lime to soil reduces its acidity, breaks down the organic matter that is added to the soil and prevents growth of fungi and bacteria. Due to these steps, nutrients added to the soil will reach the plants easily. Water retaining capacity of the soil is also increased.

Another important step to be taken is addition of fertilizers to the soil. Fertilizers can increase the nutrient quantity in the soil and increase your chances of obtaining a better crop output. Fertilizers are available in cheap as animal manures and also in expensive forms as nitrogen or other chemicals. <bio>Cathy Peterson writes about http://www.flowergardennursery.com/Coupons/Gardener's%20Supply%20Company.html, http://www.flowergardennursery.com/Coupons/BloomingBulb.com.html and http://www.flowergardennursery.com </bio>

One of the easiest ways to ensure that your rose garden is a success is to be prepared. You can do this by making sure you've followed these tips for rose gardening soil preparation.

People need healthy food to perform their best, and roses are no different. In fact, roses are plants that require a large amount of nutrients in the soil in order to grow large and colorful blooms. The most important thing you can do for you roses is to feed them right. Since roses gain their nourishment through the soil that they are planted in, this means that you should take extra care to make sure that the soil is prepared sufficiently to support healthy growth. Here are some tips for proper rose gardening soil preparation.

The first step you need to take before planting is to dig up all the ground in your bed. You don't want any hard soil left. By digging up the ground, you will have the ability to get the fertilizer well mixed into the soil and this will allow the nutrients to sink into all of the dirt. This means that no matter what direction the roots grow in, they will be able to reach food. You want to make sure that the entire layer of nutrients reaches at least two to three feet. As your rose plant grows, its roots will reach deeper and deeper and this will make certain they are fed.

Your next step is to dig a one foot deep hole and lay the soil to the side. You can place it in your wheelbarrow or on a piece of plastic so that it can be re-added later. After digging the hole in the garden bed, the next step in rose gardening soil preparation is adding fertilizer. This can be in the form of compost, peat moss, or manure. You may want to consult a local greenery expert for advice on which fertilizers are available and useful in your area. Since climate can affect them, your fertilizer should be the one most potent in your area. Add around three inches of fertilizer directly into the hole you have dug in the bed. Start digging for another foot, mixing the fertilizer with the soil. This is the hole where you will place your rose plant, so you will want to make certain that the fertilizer and soil are mixed extremely well. After it has been mixed very thoroughly, it's time to add the dirt from the hole back into the rose bed. Once the dirt has been replaced, add another three inches of the fertilizer over the top of the rose bed. To protect your roots and encourage their growth, also add some bone meal. There are also rose fertilizers especially designed for the soil of a rose bed, you may want add some now if you want. But the soil should be well prepared without it. After all these layers have been added, use a spade to mix them up a little more and rake the top of the roe bed smooth.

The next step of rose gardening soil preparation is the hardest one: waiting.
Natural lawn care basics need to be learnt before you can really take care of your lawn.

If you are looking for the healthiest way to take care of your lawn then natural lawn care products are just what you need. Often natural products can give you much better results than ordinary lawn care products and so if you have never thought about switching from chemical to organic, now could be a good time.

Before you can start using natural lawn care products however, you will need to know a few basics on how to use them. Here you will find everything you need to know about using natural lawn care products.

The Basics of Natural Lawn Care

If you find that your lawn needs fertilizing more than once a year then you ideally should look into the health of our soil. You should not need to use a fertilizer more than once per year and so if you do, it would suggest that there is a hidden problem within the lawn.

It could be that you have a problem with your soil. You can test this by testing the soils PH levels and if they come back higher or lower than 6.5-7.0 then it suggests there could be a problem. The soil could also have a problem with clay residue which can cause the soil to compact and stop the air and nutrients from getting to the lawn. If you have got a compacted soil problem then it will need to be aerated. This simply means that you will need to lift small areas of the turf to get air into the soil. If you are not confident doing this by yourself then you can always hire a professional to do it for you.

Watering tends to be another issue when it comes to natural lawn care. You really need to ensure that you do not over-water your lawn as if you do you will discourage the roots to grow deep into the soil. When the roots grow deeper, they gain the moisture that they need from the soil and you will not have to water the lawn as often as you do now. This means that weeds are killed off better as they will dry out long before the grass does.

Overall by taking into account these natural lawn care basic tips, you can be sure that you will be left with fantastic results. It is not as difficult as you might first imagine looking after your lawn the natural way. Just as long as you take care of any problems that your lawn currently has, you will ensure that you are left with excellent results all year round. <bio>Andrew Caxton enjoys writing about lawn care for http://www.lawn-mowers-and-garden-tractors.com . A great deal of care and preparation must be undertaken before you get started. You will need to know how best to prepare soil and know how to enrich it and also provide it with adequate protection from insects that can often do a lot of harm to your vegetables.

Healthy soils usually produce healthy plants provided you incorporate the right Ingredients into your preparation there is no reason why you should not produce healthy abundant plants.

To get the right kind of fertile soil for your organic vegetables, you need to ensure that the soil will is as fertile as possible, and to ensure that you need to have proper amount of nitrogen, phosphorous and also potassium. Before doing anything else, you need to have drawn up detailed plans about how you are going to perform your organic vegetable gardening chores; obviously the type of soil that you use will be a major consideration as far as your plans to grow vegetables organically are concerned.

Your plan must decide what you wish to grow, know the space requirements, make a small scale plan and know where to place different vegetables, and also you will need to calculate the right distance between seeds and rows. Once you have your plans sorted out, you will be ready to get the full benefits of organic vegetable gardening which includes giving your taste buds a treat and being able to choose to sow your favorite vegetables.

In order to be successful in your organic vegetable gardening endeavors you should protect your garden from unwanted intrusion by pets or vermin and plan towards well and constantly cared for gardening this requires a strong will if you want to reap the many possible benefits. You will need to mix the soil well and do so at least three weeks before planting, the soil must have been well prepared to take the seeds and even maybe the transplants.

You also need to ensure that the soil has those materials that have plenty of nitrogen and the soil should have pH of approximately 7.0 and temperatures should hover close to fifty degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, the soil must be properly aerated and to prevent soil from turning acidic there should be enough lime present. While irrigating the soil, care should be taken to make the soil thoroughly wet at least once in a week unless it has rained, which will ensure that the soil is moist especially around the root zone.

Go to your local garden supplier they will be able to assist you with local conditions and where to source your organic compost and manures lime and other soil inputs. When you start of with a well prepared patch you will find it easy to control weeds and provided your plants are well fed and healthy you should have no problems with insects and other parasites.. Before you realize it you will be harvestinf your first produce and from then on there is no looking back. <bio>Authors biography: Paul Courtney contributes articles to various publications pertaining to Alternative Medicine, Herbal Medicine, Herb Gardens and Organic Food. for more information please visit http://www.organiceandyou.com/index.php </bio>

If your pond membrane is leaking there are three main ways to fix it: the blanket method, the mixed blanket method, and the Sprinkle Method. Once you decide on a method you will need to test your soil to determine what the application rate of your sealant needs to be.

Testing the Pond's Soil:

Testing your soil is something that you must do to find out what kind of soil you have at the bottom of your pond. Take a can and perforate the bottom of it and then fill the bottom with about two inches of gravel. Cover the gravel with six inches of soil from the bottom of your pond and then tap it. Elevate the can so that the bottom is open and then fill the can with water.

The sealant you choose should have directions on how much should be used per square foot of soil on the bottom of your pond. Typically these application rates differ depending on what kind of soil you've used.

The Blanket Method:

This is the most effective method for sealing your leaking pond membrane, but you will need to take more care when applying it. After you prepare the surface that needs to be sealed, remove between four and six inches of the soil at the bottom of the pond. Fill any deep crevices or holes with your sealant=97the mixture should be one part sealant to five parts of soil, then smooth everything over with a drag or a roller. After that, cover the area with your sealant=97make sure that the sealant layer is even and that there aren't any thin or bare spots. When the sealant is as even as you can get it to be, replace the soil you removed, but take care to not disturb your layer of sealant.

The Mixed Blanket Method:

Prepare the area that you need to seal just like you did with the blanket method. If the soil is dry then you will need to add enough water to moisten it lightly and then disc or plow the bottom of the pond between four and twelve inches deep and then drag or roll the surface until the surface is smooth. When everything is smooth, apply your sealant in the correct amount. Mix the sealant with the to four to twelve inches of soil by hand raking, tilling or dicing until it has mixed uniformly, and then compact the bottom of the pond by tamping or rolling.

The Sprinkle Method:

You should only use the sprinkle method when you can't drain the pond or if there is an isolated leak in which spotted treatment might be an alternative. This is the least effective method because the accurate and uniform application of the sealant is hard and because the bottom of the pond might not be clear of debris. Simply sprinkle the appropriate amount of sealant onto the water's surface and allow it to fall down into place and plug the leaks. The particles will be drawn to the leaks naturally and will repair the leaks without much effort on your part. <bio>Derek Rogers is a freelance writer who represents a number of UK businesses.
Compost is formed when garden debris is allowed to decay. It is an organic matter. If you want to succeed as an organic gardener, you must take full advantage of using compost. It is good for increasing the fertility of the soil for planting seeds. It also forms an useful element for greenhouse and potting soil development. The nutrient value of cost depends on the fertilizers and other nutrient-rich materials which are added to it as it goes through the decomposing process.

The benefits of a composted humus is invaluable to the average gardener. It is no wonder that most amateur gardeners use compost in some form or the other. When nutritive elements have been added to compost it is used as rotted manure, while it is used as humus when no nutrients have been added.

To make the soil soft, spongy and absorbent, the best garden loam is used which contain one-third humus. Soil that is sandy and humus-deficient, permit rain water to seep through taking all the nutrients down with it. Likewise, a clay soil without humus is so hard that it nearly repels water, and does not let the roots to travel down looking for food and moisture.

Any organic matter can decompose (compost) if left at the mercy of the elements. Leaves, grass clippings, plant tops, straw, old hay, and sod are some of the materials which make good compost.

It is a common practice with many gardeners to add humus in the form of weeds (that is raw organic material) to soil without making a compost. They dig them in borders and all round the plants.

When you add raw organic matter to the soil, it causes soil bacteria to hasten the activity of humus. The soil can then be depleted of nitrogen causing leaves to turn yellow. Thus it makes sense to remove the weeds to the heap of compost, returning them to the soil once they have become compost. Leaf mold and peat moss are ready compost material that can be added to the soil without any further composting. They are good organic materials.

There are several ways you can make a compost pile. You can use a 15 feet or so snow fencing wired into a circle in which a leaf pile is kept. You can have a series of them in a row. Within 2 years, or less, depending on the weather conditions, this leaf pile will turn into compost without any extra effort from you. Compost made of variety of leaves is a good source of additional potting humus, but offer very little nutritional value. Broad leaved ever greens love acidic environment. Since beech and oak leaves are acidic, they make excellent additional humus to be placed around these trees. <bio>Jackson Porter is a staff writer at http://homegardenenthusiast.com and is an occasional contributor to several other websites, including http://www.environmental-central.com. </bio>

If you have always liked buying organic produce at your local supermarket you may have considered growing your own organic garden. Learning how to grow an organic garden is actually quite easy. The most important thing to remember is that the products you use must be free form chemicals and pesticides.

Steps You Should Take When Growing A Organic Garden:

1.The First thing you should do is test your soil. The test will tell you how healthy your soil is. If you test different parts of your garden you will be able to decide the best place for growing a organic garden. The soil should be sent to a lab who will conduct the tests and provide you with accurate results. You will then be able to make any adjustments necessary to ensure you have perfect soil for growing a organic garden.

2.The next step in growing a organic garden is the seeds. There are several outlets for gardeners to find the exact seeds they are looking for. The type of garden you choose to plant is entirely up to you.

3.Once you have chosen your seeds, you need to weed the area where you will be growing a organic garden. The weeding makes sure that the soil is kept at its best.

4.Planting the seeds, followed by watering is the next steps. Soil should be watered regularly; however it should never be over watered. Over watering will wash away all the nutrients you have been trying so hard to accumulate in the soil and ruin your hard work in growing a organic garden.

5.Fertilizing is also an important step when you are growing a organic garden. . Garden centers have fertilizer for purchase or you could mix your own fertilizer with products from your home. The best times to fertilize are in the spring, and then again during summertime. This will ensure that your organ garden will achieve the desired results you are trying to achieve.

Learning how to grow an organic garden is easy, with a few tips your garden will blossom in no time. Deciding on what you will plant is a different story. Some choose to learn how to grow an organic rose garden, while others may choose to grow herbs or vegetables. Using seed guides, you can determine what items would grow better in your region. You will learn from experience too as trial and effort in growing a organic garden will show in the results that you achieve. You will find what works and what doesn't and you should have fun learning too. <bio>http://www.myorganicgardener.com is an informative site offering help and advice in all aspects of gardening, organic gardening, herb gardens, to help you grow and maintain your garden. </bio>

The foundation of any garden, be it organic, container, square foot =96 whatever, is it's soil but how many of us actually understand how these soils develop into the different types we have in our garden =96 mine is almost solid clay. It is my frequent mutter that you could take a spade of soil and dump it straight onto the Potter's Wheel!

Soil is created from the primeval actions of the earth in its growth and development. Formed of rock mixed with vegetable and animal material over eons of time it becomes the friable and crumbly humus we like to have in our gardens. As the rocks moved and collided they were gradually ground down to form the fine particles that we associate with our soil, and so it still goes on. Many of the particles dissolve in water and are mixed with the decaying biological material to form a slurry that eventually dries out and is deposited as soil.

During the formation of the earth much of the slurry that was created went through a great deal more before it became the soil we treasure today. Often the dissolved rock would be compressed and subject to huge temperature changes which reformed it at a molecular level. The effect of heat, cold and weather caused more crumbling and eventually those rocks would break down as well. This mechanical action would form relatively large particles of mixed animal, vegetable and mineral matter akin to the sandy soils which are so easy to work and which have such good drainage properties.

Clay Soils, with which I am only too familiar, are formed in a slightly different way. The rock from which it was formed is attacked by acids in the atmosphere, mainly generated from Carbon Dioxide. This produces a chemical change, rather than the mechanical one which produces gritty, sandy soils. Vast amounts of water are required to create this kind of chemical change and the resulting mud based soils. This also has a dramatic effect on the way the soil behaves when it is waterlogged. Gritty, soils allow the water to flow through but clay flocculates, or flows together, and forms lumpy masses so however much other material you work into it, it will always be clumpy.

Soil Acidity is also critical to the well being of your garden.

Many plants are tolerant of high or low acidity, though there are some which are not. For example if you want your Blue Hydrangeas to stay blue then you need an acidic soil with a low pH value.

The acidity of the soil affects the solubility of nutrients and their availability to the plants, highly acidic soils can have high concentrations of iron and aluminum which will be toxic for a number of plants. Acidity is caused by rainwater leaching away alkaline minerals, the decay of organic material and the formation of weak organic acids within the soil. This acidity can be counteracted by using lime bearing soil additives in just the same way that you would add composts and soil conditioners to sandy soils.

The quality of your garden depends on the quality of your soil and how you care for it, so it is wise to be aware of the type and condition of the soil when planning and planting your garden. <bio>Lizzie Westerley has spent many pleasurable years developing her garden and her gardening skills.
So you have a yard, but do you have landscaping? The best thing to do is to get back to the basics and start learning about landscaping from the soil up.

It Starts with the Soil

In order for your soil to work as well as possible, you need to have it tested. Your soil might be perfect or it might just need some nitrogen. Soil engineers can test and analyze soil from different points in your yard to help your yard perform at its best.

What you need to understand about landscaping is that it serves more than just an artistic or aesthetic purpose. Landscaping is functional outdoor art, but it can also serve as a vehicle for privacy; landscaping can exist to attract certain insects or birds to your home; landscaping can be used to cover up your foundation that sticks out from the bottom of your siding, among other things.

Good landscape designers are taught to utilize your landscaping for whatever you desire (security, privacy, etc) with a design that is pleasing to the eye and to the neighborhood. So think about what you are trying to get done with your landscaping. If you are trying to attract butterflies or keep neighbors from peering in, keep this in mind so that your landscaping can serve both purposes.

Simplicity is important in design and art. It's one of the best guidelines you can follow as a beginner or do it yourselfer. Just keep things simple to begin with. You can do more later on. Simplicity in planting, for instance, would be to pick two or three colors and repeat them in your landscape. Keep decor to a minimum and within a specific theme.

Balance is just as the word implies a sense of equality. There are basically two types of balance in landscape design: Symmetrical and Asymmetrical.

Symmetrical balance is when there are equally spaced matching elements in the garden design. With a garden equally divided, both sides could share all or part of the same shape, form, plant height, plant groupings, colors, bed shapes, theme, etc. Symmetrical design is somewhat of a mirror image or reflection. Asymmetrical is just the opposite.

After you have completed your landscaping you will be outside, sweating, and getting your hands dirty trying to get that green thumb. <bio>Sara Nightingale is an avid gardener and landscaper who specializes in helping newcomers to beautify their outdoor surroundingshttp://www.landscaping.thegardenstop.com </bio>

Notice the lowly earthworm, squirming away, going about its everyday business. Simple creatures you may think but they have quite a important use in the garden. Did you know the earthworms are nature's first gardeners? They don't exist just for kids to eat and fishermen to use as bait :)

Some Basic Earthworm Facts

Earthworms are present in almost every type of soil but the healthier the soil the greater the numbers. A healthy soil permits lots of air and moisture, both of which are needed by the earthworm for a continued existence. Earthworms have no lungs like you or me but instead breathe through their skin. Their whole skin absorbs oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. They also need moisture to assist them in respiration but too much moisture is not good for them.

There are four types of earthworm that you may run into:

Nightcrawlers: 8 to 10 inches long and the fisherman's favourite. Garden Worms: 5 to 7 inches long and found commonly in damp soils. Manure Worms: 4 to 5 inches long and found in manure rich soils. Red Worms: 3 to 4 inches long and the most commercially available.

Why Earthworms in the Garden?

A garden without earthworms would miss out on all of the great benefits that they bring to it. Their first job is to till the soil by tunneling through it. Tunnels created allow air and moisture to pass easily through the soil, creating a healthy environment for plants. Tunnels retain water that the plants can take up and also hold air to help bacteria break down organic matter within the soil.

After digestion earthworms produce excrement about the size of a pin head. This excrement is called "castings" or "vermicompost" and is an excellent soil conditioning material. It improves properties of the soil such as porosity and moisture retention, aids plant growth and helps in the fight against pests and diseases.

Increasing Earthworm Population in the Garden

How does one go about increasing the number of earthworms in their garden soil? Well the best way to do so is to add more organic matter to the soil. Earthworms cannot get enough of the stuff.and will seek it out wherever they can find it.

Finally...

The earthworm is just as important to the garden as the gardener that maintains it because they till the soil and add a soil conditioner in the form of castings. They are as much a gardener as you are. The next time you see one wiggling on the ground in front of you bend down and say "got any good gardening tips?" You never know it may answer :)

I will leave the final word to a one Charles Darwin who once had this to say about the earthworm:

"The plow is one of the most ancient and most valuable of man's inventions; but long before he existed, the land was in fact regularly plowed and still continues to be thus plowed by earthworms. It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world, as have these lowly organized creatures." <bio>Francis Kilkelly runs one of the fastest growing home and garden communities at http://www.gardenstew.com/ that has gardening forums and gardening blogs ( http://www.gardenstew.com/blogs.php ).
Everyone who builds his own garden and choosing different flowers to plant in his garden necessarily chooses rose as one of those plants. Roses are indeed very beautiful flowers and they add a lot of charm to your garden. Hence, who would not like to have rose plant as one of his flower plants?

People usually have wrong notions regarding roses. They think that roses are difficult to grow and they might often have a lesser life span than expected. However, this notion is not true. Rose plants are easy to grow and they add a lot of charm to your garden when they blossom. All you need to do is arrange the rose plants the right pattern in your garden. Then you can observe for yourself how roses look so attractive whether in combination with other color flowers and separately by themselves.

There are some requirements for a rose plant to grow properly. The first requirement is good soil. The site used for planting roses must be free from weeds and rocks. Any previous vegetation that was planted on the site must also be removed. Then the soil must be turned and adequate quantity of fertilizers must be added. Fertilizers ensure that your soil is rich is nutrients and help your rose plants to grow properly.

Ensure that the soil has good drainage facility. Keep turning the soil for one or two weeks. Compost, a mixer of soil and materials like banana peels, eggshells, apple cores, and coffee can be added continuously during this period to increase the nutrient content of the soil.

Rose plants can be acquired in a number of ways. Like everything else, even rose plants can be purchased on the internet. There are a number of websites relating to horticulture which deliver rose plant bulbs to your doorstep, which can then be planted in your garden. Rose plant bulbs can also be obtained from the local nursery in your area for a decent price. They will give you the right variety of rose plant that can grow and flourish in that specific season.

The good thing about rose plants is that their growth can be controlled by pruning them from time to time. After you have planted the bulbs in the soil, keep watering them regularly. Within a few weeks, beautiful looking rose flowers will emerge in your garden and it will be a pleasant sight to watch <bio>Lanny Hintz writes about http://www.flowergardennursery.com/Coupons/Henry%20Fields%20Seed%20and%20Nursery.html, http://www.flowergardennursery.com/Coupons/BloomingBulb.com.html </bio>

Planting a vegetable garden at home can be fun, economical, and educational, but it can also be quite frustrating if you don't do some planning and preparation. Here are some ideas to get you started, check with your local Cooperative Extension for more tips.

First you should plan out your garden. One thing you will want to consider for a home vegetable garden is sunlight. Vegetable crops need a lot of sun, about six hours of full sunlight a day. For convenience, placing your garden near your water source, and near your house are good ideas as well, if possible. Draw a chart of your garden and plan out what crops will go where. If this is your first try at vegetable gardening, it is a good idea to start small so you can see how much time and work it will require. Plant crops that your family really likes in quantities that will be manageable to grow and use.

If you want good crops, you need good soil. Preparing your garden bed is the next step to a successful garden. Some preparation in the fall, like tilling, or loosening up the soil, will make it easier to get ready in the spring and will allow you to start some plants out earlier. For optimal results, have your soil tested to see if it is acidic, what nutrients it has, etc. This will help you decide how and how much to fertilize your garden. If you don't want to have your soil tested, ask the local gardening or seed store about local conditions. They should be able to give you a good idea of what is typical in your area. When you fertilize, pay close attention to recommended amounts and ratios of fertilizer to soil or size of your garden bed. Too much fertilizer will burn and kill your plants.

Now you can lay out your garden. Use stakes and string to create straight rows so you will know where your seeds are before they come up. Put up wire hoops or trellises for tomatoes, beans, and other plants that climb. Make soil mounds for tender vine crops like cucumbers and pumpkins. Whether you are planting seeds or plants that you have purchased or started indoors, make sure that you leave enough space between plants so they can get adequate sunlight, and not be competing with their neighbors for water and soil nutrients.

With a little forethought, you can end up with an enjoyable hobby that feeds your family, too! <bio>Jena Luthowski writes about http://www.HomeGardenCoupons.com/, http://www.homegardencoupons.com/Categories/Apple%20Trees.html and http://www.SimplyBestCoupons.com </bio>

When you go to the supermarket you can see fresh herbs for sale. These same herbs can be grown in your garden with a minimal amount of trouble. You can grow them from cuttings or seeds. You can divide the heavy growing herbs and plant new herb plants. Whatever format that you decide to use, herb gardening adds zest to your world.

Herbs are annuals, biennials and perennial plants. Herbs like Basil, Coriander and Dill are annuals that bloom for one season only and then die. Caraway and parsley are biennials that live for two seasons and bloom only in the second season. Perennials like chives, fennel, mint and tarragon 'die' over winter and then blossom each season once the plant has established itself.

Herbs need to be planted in a 20 by 4 foot garden space. In this garden, you can have separate plots for each type of herb. This mini plot is a 12 by 18 inch herb garden. With the many herbs that are being used, colorful and frequently used herbs can be planted around the borders of your plot. Parsley and Purple Basil are examples of colorful border herb gardening.

For your herb garden to thrive the soil should not be very wet. Herbs do not grow in wet soil. To make your herb plot well drained, remove about 15 to 18 inches depth of soil. To the bottom of the hole add some crushed stone or other material that is similar to the stones.

A compost and sand mixture added to the soil will lighten the soil's texture making it easier for the water to seep through the soil and drain away. Hummus will enrich the nutrients within the soil and restore the soil's Ph level. Then refill the hole higher than it was originally.

The herbs can be planted in the ground late winter. Herb gardening requires that you first grow them indoors in shallow trays. The herb seeds must not be covered with a thick coating of soil. The soil needs to be light and well drained. This type of soil texture will ensure that your herb gardening gets off to good start.

Once your herbs are planted outdoors there are a few insects that can attack the plants. Aphids like anise, caraway, dill and fennel herbs. The red mite spider attacks low growing herbs. Rust can be a disease-like status for mint plants.

But these minor troubles aside, herb gardening is a peaceful and intriguing activity that takes its place in history. Whether you use herbs for cooking, medicinal use or even aromatic usage, the art of herb gardening is making a comeback amongst gardeners. Join their ranks and enjoy the pleasures of using your own herbs.

To your gardening success!
