<content:encoded><![CDATA[You wake up one morning and you decided that you have had enough of being obese! You have a very personal reason: a choice for change and a healthier you. <br /><br /> Whether you're considering weight-loss surgery and want to understand what's ahead, adapting to a new lifestyle following the procedure, or looking for non-surgical weight-loss tips, all the information is here. <br /><br /> Opting for weight-loss surgery is not an easy choice. To decide whether it's right for you, consider the facts of the procedure and the post-operative road you'll need to travel. <br /><br /> The challenges of dieting, exercise and even medications can seem daunting when trying to keep weight off. As a result, many have turned to weight-loss surgery as the best long-term option. But before making that difficult decision, questions need to be answered. <br /><br /> Which type of weight-loss surgery is right for you? What's involved in the procedure? Are there any risks associated with weight-loss surgery? In normal digestion, food passes through the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stomach" rel="tag">stomach</a> and enters the small intestine, where most of the nutrients and calories are absorbed. It then passes into the large intestine (colon), and the remaining waste is eventually excreted. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/gastric+bypass+surgery" rel="tag">Gastric bypass surgery</a> makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size, which reduces the amount of food you eat and thus the calories consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fewer+calories" rel="tag">fewer calories</a> being absorbed. This leads to weight loss. <br /><br /> The most common gastric bypass surgery is a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. <br /><br /> In a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the stomach is made smaller by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach using surgical staples or a plastic band. The smaller stomach is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine (jejunum), bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine (duodenum). <br /><br /> This procedure can be done by making a large incision in the abdomen (an open procedure) or by making a small incision and using small instruments and a camera to guide the surgery (laparoscopic approach). <br /><br /> Male gender is a predictor of morbidity and age a predictor of mortality for patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery. Open gastric bypass surgery requires up to a 5-day stay. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery requires a hospital stay of 2-3 days. <bio>The most common surgery for obesity is Gastric Surgery. <content:encoded><![CDATA[There are several types of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/obesity+surgery" rel="tag">obesity surgery</a> available to those wishing to undergo the procedure. All of which have some level of permanence, meaning that you won't be able to fully reverse the obesity surgery once you go through with it. <br /><br /> The most commonly known form of obesity surgery is gastric bypass, also known as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stomach+stapling" rel="tag">stomach stapling</a>. This procedure involves removing a large portion of the stomach from itself via a stapling device. The remains of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stomach+pouch" rel="tag">stomach pouch</a> are attached to a portion of the lower intestine. <br /><br /> Another well known procedure is the lap band. This is a less invasive form. The doctor places a ring with an inflatable section around the upper portion of the stomach. The ring has a tube attached to it that ends with a port that the doctor can easily access to inflate the ring and gradually reduce the stomachs capacity. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/biliopancreatic+diversion" rel="tag">Biliopancreatic Diversion</a>, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/duodenal+switch" rel="tag">Duodenal Switch</a> is a more involved surgery which consists of removing two thirds of the stomach and attaching the end of the stomach to a lower portion of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestine" rel="tag">small intestine</a>. The part of the intestine which was bypassed is still attached to the duodenum and its end attached to the small intestine where food is now routed to carry <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/digestive+juices" rel="tag">digestive juices</a> to the area. <br /><br /> The Long Limb Gastric Bypass is similar to the above except that doctors will attach the portion of small intestine containing digestive juices further down in the intestinal tract so that the food and digestive juices have even less time to mix. <br /><br /> There is a form of Gastric Bypass known as the Fobi modification. A normal gastric bypass procedure is modified by the placement of a firm ring of material around the new stomach pouch. <br /><br /> Other types of obesity surgery are vertical banded arthroplasty (rarely used anymore), Jejuno-Ileal Bypass, and Gastric Pacing. <bio>Read more <a href="<a href="http://www.obesity-surgery.biz">http://www.obesity-surgery.biz.</a>/sitemap.html"><a href="http://www.obesity-surgery.biz">http://www.obesity-surgery.biz.</a>/sitemap.html</a> and <a href="<a href="http://www.obesity-surgery.biz">http://www.obesity-surgery.biz.</a>/obesity-surgery-biz-index.htm"><a href="http://www.obesity-surgery.biz">http://www.obesity-surgery.biz.</a>/obesity-surgery-biz-index.htm</a> or visit our <a href="http://www.obesity-surgery.biz">http://www.obesity-surgery.biz.</a>. </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Although the mention of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stomach+gas" rel="tag">stomach gas</a> problems, such as belching, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/flatulence" rel="tag">flatulence</a>, bloating and "gas pains" often elicits some degree of amusement, all of us have gas in our intestinal tract and must expel it in some way. <br /><br /> Some individuals are very sensitive to the effects of gas collections in the stomach and intestinal tract and may develop significant discomfort. <br /><br /> If such complaints are troublesome and persistent and do not respond to simple measures, such as change in diet, a visit to your doctor could be helpful. <br /><br /> The gas brought back by belching comes entirely from swallowed air. We all swallow some air when eating food and drinking liquids. Most of the gas mixes with the stomach content and either enters into the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestine" rel="tag">small intestine</a> or is belched back. <br /><br /> The air that enters the small intestine is either absorbed or it may continue through to the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/large+intestine" rel="tag">large intestine</a> and is then passed rectally. Individuals may swallow more air (and thus increase stomach gas) if they have a post-nasal drip, chew gum, have poorly fitting dentures, suck on hard candies or smoke tobacco. Drinking carbonated beverages (soda or beer) or eating rapidly can also increase stomach gas. <br /><br /> The food we choose to eat can influence the amount of gas passed rectally. Although most of our food intake is absorbed in the small intestine, some foods, such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, baked beans, and bran are incompletely digested. <br /><br /> They are then broken down by bacteria in the large intestine, causing the formation of gas. A high <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/roughage+diet" rel="tag">roughage diet</a> is important to promote bowel regularity, but excessive roughage or fiber may lead to bloating and increased flatulence. <br /><br /> When increasing the amount of fiber in your diet, do so gradually, allowing your intestinal tract time to adjust.Milk sugar (lactose) requires an intestinal enzyme (lactase) for digestion. When individuals lack this enzyme the lactose in milk and other dairy products enters the large intestine where the lactose is broken down by bacteria, producing gas. <br /><br /> Although milk is an excellent source of protein and calcium, many adults experience abdominal bloating, gas and diarrhea after consuming milk sugar. Persons from Asia and Africa are often extremely intolerant to the smallest quantity of dairy products. <br /><br /> Everyone passes some rectal gas, although the volume of gas is different each day. Much of the flatus comes from the nitrogen found in the air one swallows. The remainder of the flatus volume is the result of carbohydrates which are not absorbed in the small intestine and are broken down by bacteria in the large intestine. <br /><br /> Therefore, the amount of flatus represents a combination of swallowed air and poorly absorbed carbohydrates. The unpleasant order of flatus is due to other gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, which is produced by the bacteria. <br /><br /> Individuals with a long history of occasional gaseousness and abdominal discomfort need not seek medical attention. A change in the location of abdominal pain, significant increase in the frequency or severity of symptoms, or onset of new symptoms in individuals over the age of 40 are some of the reasons to see your doctor. <bio>Learn all you wanted to know about stomach gas <a href="http://www.stomach-gas.info">http://www.stomach-gas.info</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Managing stress in your life is a great way to help get your negative emotions under control, but unfortunately, stress is only one of many IBS causes. In fact, research that has been conducted over the past few years has found that IBS may also be related to Small Intestinal <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/bacteria" rel="tag">Bacteria</a>l Overgrowth (SIBO). <br /><br /> What is SIBO? It is an overgrowth of bacteria that naturally occurs in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestine" rel="tag">small intestine</a>. The small intestine contains a small amount of bacteria that is essential to the proper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. However, when too much bacteria exists, problems such as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fat+malabsorption" rel="tag">fat malabsorption</a> occur. In addition, it also stops carbohydrates from being absorbed, leaving them to rot in the intestines causing a number of unpleasant and often foul-smelling symptoms including bloating, pain, gas, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/mucus+in+stools" rel="tag">mucus in stools</a> and diarrhea. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/bacterial+overgrowth" rel="tag">Bacterial overgrowth</a> can lead to nutrient deficiencies, food allergies and digestive enzymes that barely function. It is a common condition that usually goes undetected for years, even when symptoms are present. Why? Most people who have chronic digestive problems and have bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation are typically diagnosed with <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/irritable+bowel+syndrome" rel="tag">irritable bowel syndrome</a>. Doctors rarely consider bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine as the problem. <br /><br /> What causes bacterial overgrowth? There are many different factors that can lead to SIBO. Some of the following conditions that could cause an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine include: <br /><br /> • Reduction of motility in the small intestine -- condition caused by too much dietary sugar and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/chronic+stress" rel="tag">chronic stress</a>. This condition can also occur from diabetes, scleroderma and hypothyroidism. <br /><br /> • Structural abnormalities within the small intestine -- abnormalities may be caused by small intestinal diverticula, gastric bypass surgery, and intestinal obstruction. etc. <br /><br /> • Hypochlorhydria -- As people age, they produce less stomach acid. Stomach acid helps to eliminate bacteria in the small intestine. Thus, if there is a decline, the acid won't be able to eliminate enough of the bacteria. <br /><br /> • Other causes -- stress, prolonged use of steroids, antibiotics, antacids, birth control pills and other medications, immune deficiency, pancreatic enzyme deficiency and a diet insufficient in fiber. <br /><br /> Are IBS and SIBO related? <br /><br /> One study that was conducted by researches at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in California involved 202 participants with IBS. Each participant was tested for bacterial overgrowth with a lactulose breath hydrogen test. A person with bacterial overgrowth produces high levels of methane or hydrogen gas. The lactulose hydrogen test analyses the gas in breath, and is the best test for diagnosing SIBO. <br /><br /> At the end of the study it was found that of the 202 participants, 157 tested positive for SIBO. When the 157 people that were diagnosed with SIBO were treated for the condition, and the extra bacteria within their intestine were eliminated, 48% of them had an improvement in their IBS symptoms. <br /><br /> Although it has been found that bacterial overgrowth and IBS can co-exist, researchers are still determining whether or not IBS symptoms are caused by SIBO. Some theories suggest that the high levels of methane or hydrogen gas that are caused by the overgrowth of bacteria produce IBS symptoms. However, the theories are yet to be proved. <br /><br /> How do you treat SIBO? <br /><br /> Excess bacteria are eliminated through the use of antibiotics. Unfortunately, although antibiotics can control bacteria overgrowth it isn't a cure. Like IBS, SIBO symptoms often return when medication is ceased. Thus, antibiotic treatment is often a continuous process. <br /><br /> If you think you may have SIBO, talk to your doctor about taking a lactulose hydrogen test. If you find that SIBO is related to your IBS causes, or even if it's not, it is a good idea to look into other alternative and complimentary forms of therapy to treat your symptoms such as acupuncture aside from medications. <bio>Want to learn more about <a href="http://www.natural-irritable-bowel-syndrome-relief.com/ibs.html" >http://www.natural-irritable-bowel-syndrome-relief.com/ibs.html</a>? <content:encoded><![CDATA[ It's a worrying statistic that for people with crohn's three-fourths of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/sufferers" rel="tag">sufferers</a> wil have to undergo crohn's disease surgery at some point in their life. Most medical professionals will try to control Crohn's with medications and lifestyle changes before they suggest this, but there are times when it just has to be done for the sake of saving the life of the patient. When this condition strikes in the intestinal area, which it often does, there are complications that can arise that require Crohn's disease surgery, and even though it is not a cure, it can help make a patient feel much better. <br /><br /> Because Crohn's disease causes moderate to severe <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/inflammation" rel="tag">inflammation</a> in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/intestines" rel="tag">intestines</a>, complications can occur. There are medications that can help with many of the symptoms, but there are times when the inflammation that is the root cause of Crohn's will <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/reek+havoc" rel="tag">reek havoc</a> on the system as a whole, or just a small part of it. Most doctors will not rush a patient into Crohn's disease surgery unless they think it is absolutely necessary as some of the procedures are rather complicated, carry risk and can change a person's life forever. <br /><br /> For some crohn's sufferers there are times when the intestines become blocked. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/this+means+that" rel="tag">This means that</a> foods cannot pass through the system, and the patient will become unable to absorb nutrition nor will they be able to have a bowel movement. Alternatively, abscess can occur or tears in the intestinal walls will begin to bleed. The blood will exit through the rectum, alerting the patient that something is wrong. Surgery will be necessary if the wall of the intestine is perforated, as that might mean waste is leaking into the body. <br /><br /> One type of surgical procedure commonly performed is strictureplasty. This is done when there is a blockage or problem in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestine" rel="tag">small intestine</a>. When the problem is minor, the surgeons look to fix the problem but if the situation has gone past the point of repair a small section of the intestine will be removed and the ends will be connected. <br /><br /> Occassionlly there are times when the problems in the colon are so bad that it must be removed completely. When this happens, the small intestine is rerouted though the front of the abdominal wall. This is called a proctocolectomy. The waste then leaves the body and empties into a small bag that is changed by the patient. Doctors will do everything they can to avoid the latter from happening. <br /><br /> If you are one of the lucky ones, you will never have to have Crohn's disease surgery, but many patients are faced with it. Though the thought of surgery is a scary one, you should take some times to think about it before you decide that you don't want to do it. Have a conversation - or many conversations - with your doctor to talk about what is bothering you and what might happen if you don't have the operation. Understanding the risks involved by not having the crohn's disease surgery can help you make a clear choice. <bio>Grab your free copy of Sharon Dobson's brand new Crohn's Disease Newsletter here <a href="http://natural-crohns-disease-relief.com?source=is" >http://natural-crohns-disease-relief.com?source=is</a> which is overflowing with information and advice to help you understand when crohn's disease surgery is necessary. </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[ Many people suffer from the problem of flatulence, which is the act of expelling intestinal gas from the rectum. There are only two sources of gas in the gastrointestinal tract, swallowed air that enters the stomach, mostly gulped while eating or drinking, and the gas produced by bacteria present in the intestines, primarily the colon. The air that we swallow is rarely the cause of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/excessive+flatulence" rel="tag">excessive flatulence</a>. It mainly occurs due to the over-production of gas by the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/intestinal+bacteria" rel="tag">intestinal bacteria</a> present in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/large+intestine" rel="tag">large intestine</a> or colon. Sometimes, flatulence is associated with some specific conditions such as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/irritable+bowel+syndrome" rel="tag">irritable bowel syndrome</a>. People who suffer from irritable bowel flatulence may also experience other symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and abnormal bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation. <br /><br /> In the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/digestion+process" rel="tag">digestion process</a>, the food that is not digested in the small intestine, primarily sugars and polysaccharides (e.g. starch, cellulose), is digested by the bacteria present in the large intestine. In this process, bacteria produce different gases such as hydrogen, methane, etc. Lactose, sorbitol and fructose are the main sugars that are poorly digested. <br /><br /> The amount of gas produced by the bacteria <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/varies+from+person" rel="tag">varies from person</a> to person. Some people have more bacteria in their colon, which results in more production of gas. Some people have particular bacteria that produce more gas. In some people, digestion of food in the small intestines is not complete, which can also effect the levels of gas produced. <br /><br /> Continue reading to discover natural methods to relieve <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/irritable+bowel+symptoms" rel="tag">Irritable Bowel symptoms</a> and sign up for our free newsletter. <br /><br /> Conditions such as lactose intolerance, and celiac disease may also result in poor digestion. Since more undigested food reaches to the bacteria in the colon, it results in more gas. Some people suffer the spreading of gas-producing bacteria from large intestine into the small intestine. Therefore, the food reaches the bacteria before its complete digestion or absorption by the small intestine, and this increased volume of undigested foods which is available to the bacteria produces more gas also.<br /><br /><br /><br /> Excessive flatulence can also be associated with eating of particular type of food. For example, eating beans can lead to excessive flatulence. <br /><br /> The unused gas distends the intestine. The intestinal muscles contract and push the gas further along the intestine until the gas is finally expelled. People who have constipation as the main symptom in irritable bowel syndrome experience more flatulence and generally pass more gas than those who don't. <br /><br /> For those with a hypersensitive intestinal tract, like those with IBS, the build up of gas can trigger other IBS symptoms. <br /><br /> There are a number of options available to a person with excessive flatulence, which include the identification of the foods that seem to cause the problems, and reducing the volume eaten of these foods. They can often be reintroduced slowly at a later stage. <br /><br /> While evaluating the problem of excessive flatulence in a person, the physician may ask the patient to count the number of times he/she passes gas for several days. <br /><br /> It helps in confirming the presence of excessive flatulence since the count correlates well with the total amount (volume) of gas passed. It is normal to pass gas about 20 times a day. However, it is not always easy to measure the amount of passed gas. If an individual passes gas less than 20 times a day but complains of excessive gas, the problem might be something other than excessive gas. For example, the lack of ability to control the passing of gas or the foul odor of the gas might be the main problem. <br /><br /> Such problems are also socially embarrassing and may prompt individuals to consult a physician. These problems are not correlated to excessive gas production or Irritable Bowel Flatulence and have different treatments. <bio>Sign up for Susan Reynolds' free IBS newsletter - Overflowing with easy to implement methods to help you discover more about Irritable Bowel Flatulence at <a href="http://www.natural-irritable-bowel-syndrome-relief.com/?source=is" >http://www.natural-irritable-bowel-syndrome-relief.com/?source=is</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[ Gastric bypass is a kind of surgical interference that is mostly used for significant weight loss if you are over weight. This surgical interference reduces your calorie intake. After the surgery, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stomach" rel="tag">stomach</a> will be small and you feel full faster to reduce amount of food. Part of stomach with small intestine will be literally skipped over so less amount of calories. Gastric bypass is also known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, Bariatric surgery - gastric bypass. <br /><br /> In Gastric by pass stomach is made small by creating a new small pouch at the top of abdomen by using plastic bands or surgical <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/staples" rel="tag">staples</a>. The smaller stomach connected directly with the middle portion of small intestine called as jejunum, bypassing the remaining part of stomach and upper potion of small intestine called as duodenum. After performing Gastric bypass the patient is recommended to reduce the quantity of his intake food as small intestine absorbs less calories at this stage. This leads to weight reduction. <br /><br /> Doctors will only recommend for bypass surgery if you have no other way to lose weight and it is only considered if your body mass index 40+. Bypass surgery usually needs 4 to 6 day hospital stay. Most people return to normal activities within 20 to 30 days. Gastric bypass may sometime cause <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/dumping+syndrome" rel="tag">dumping syndrome</a>. Dumping syndrome occurs when food moves very quickly through stomach and intestines, which causes sweating, weakness, faintness, nausea and sometimes diarrhea just after eating. These symptoms may go worse by taking high calorie foods. <br /><br /> As other surgeries, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/gastric+bypass+surgery" rel="tag">gastric bypass surgery</a> also includes risks. Risks include: <br /><br /> 1. Leak from stomach into abdominal cavity that can cause peritonitis. 2. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/blood+clot+in+lung" rel="tag">Blood clot in lung</a>. 3. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/vitamin+b12+deficiency" rel="tag">Vitamin B12 deficiency</a>- this occurs in near about 30% cases. 4. An iron deficiency anemia- this occurs in 50 cases. 5. Possibility of ulcers in 10% to 20% cases. <br /><br /> The weight reduction results after gastric bypass surgery are normally steady. Most patients reduce an average of 8 pounds every month and can reach towards stable weight between 20 and 25 months. Usually, greatest rate of weight loss take place in very beginning i.e. just after the surgery when you are just on liquid diet. <br /><br /> You will need a regular check up with doctor usually during first year. Your physician will evaluate your mental and physical health status, including weight change and your nutritional requirements. With help of a physician, dietitian and nutritionist, you can reduce your weight effectively through gastric bypass. <bio>Christopher H. Waters writes on several different. <content:encoded><![CDATA[For people who are heavily overweight, and suffering from severe or <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/morbid+obesity" rel="tag">morbid obesity</a>, dieting and exercise will often produce a short-term weight loss and can bring some marked health benefits. Any weight loss is however short-lived and the vast majority of people (between 80% and 95%) will regain their weight, and often put on further weight, relatively quickly. It is no surprise therefore that many morbidly obese individuals turn in the end to the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/gastric+bypass" rel="tag">gastric bypass</a> as a lasting solution to their problem. But just how does the gastric bypass promote long-term weight loss? <br /><br /> To understand the mechanics of the gastric bypass we need to start by considering the normal digestive process. <br /><br /> When we eat, food passes initially into the stomach where it is broken down by a strong acid solution. Once the digestive process has been completed in the stomach, food moves into the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/duodenum" rel="tag">duodenum</a>, which is the first part of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestine" rel="tag">small intestine</a>, and bile and pancreatic juice is added to the mix to continue the process of digestion. It is here in the duodenum that iron and calcium are absorbed into the body. <br /><br /> Food then continues on down the small intestine, which is almost 20 feet in length, passing first through the jejunum and then through the ileum and it is here that the body extracts the bulk of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/calories" rel="tag">calories</a> and nutrients contained in the food that we eat. Finally, any food particles that cannot be digested are passed into the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/large+intestine" rel="tag">large intestine</a> where they are stored until they are passed out of the body. <br /><br /> We gain weight because the food that we eat contains more calories than we need to support the level of activity within the body and so the body, having burnt up the calories that it needs, stores any left-over calories as fat which is dispersed throughout the body. <br /><br /> Gastric bypass works by altering the body's digestive process in one of two ways. <br /><br /> One form of gastric bypass (referred to as restrictive surgery) physically restricts the quantity of food that we can eat and so not only stops us from consuming more calories than the body needs but reduces our intake to fewer calories than are necessary and so forces the body to start burning off the reserves that it has laid down as fat. <br /><br /> The second form of gastric bypass (referred to as malabsorptive surgery) does not restrict the quantity of food that we can eat but creates a new passage for that food so that a substantial proportion of the small intestine is bypassed and the body is able to extract only a small number of calories. Once again this forces the body to dig into its fat reserves. <br /><br /> In many cases gastric bypass operations are in fact a combination of these two forms and will both restrict the intake of food and reduce adsorption by re-routing the food past much of the small intestine. <br /><br /> There are many variations of the gastric bypass and each has its advantages as well as its disadvantages. Some forms will be more suited to one individual than to another and in other cases it will be very much a matter of personal preference in consultation with your surgeon. <br /><br /> The gastric bypass is a powerful solution to the problem of obesity but it comes at a price and is not without both risk and complication. It is also important to understand that the gastric bypass is not in itself a magic cure for obesity and that you will need to learn to work with your new digestive system by adopting a whole new set of eating habits and a dramatic change to your lifestyle if you are to maintain the weight lost as a result of surgery. <br /><br /> Once the initial and virtually automatic weight loss has been achieved following the gastric bypass it is quite easy to abuse your new digestive system and to start putting the weight back on again. <bio>For more information about the gastric bypass please visit <a href="http://GastricBypassFacts.info" >http://GastricBypassFacts.info</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Crohn's sufferers that have constipation due to a stricture, have a severe case of Crohn's that may one day lead to more complications that could result in an ileostomy. An ileostomy (pronounced il-ee-os-tuh-mee) is an operation that involves bringing the end of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestine" rel="tag">small intestine</a> (the ileum) through an opening surgically created in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/abdomen" rel="tag">abdomen</a> known as a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stoma" rel="tag">stoma</a>. <br /><br /> An ileostomy is a procedure given to those who require their colon (<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/large+intestine" rel="tag">large intestine</a>) and rectum to be removed, because the disease and injury that has infected the large intestine has rendered it incapable of safely processing waste. <br /><br /> Since the small intestine is no longer attached to the colon to pass waste on, the stoma created connects the ileum to the outside surface skin of the abdomen. A special bag known as an appliance is securely attached to the opening and collects waste from the small intestine. Most ilesostomies are located on the right side of the abdomen just above the groin. <br /><br /> Living with an ileostomy <br /><br /> An ileostomy is an operation that usually improves symptoms of Crohn's disease. However, living with an ileostomy can be a struggle at first. The following are some tips on how you can cope and make the most of your new lifestyle. <br /><br /> The Pouch -- All <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/pouches" rel="tag">pouches</a>, regardless if they are open or closed ended, are designed of lightweight plastic and are attached by an adhesive <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/wafer" rel="tag">wafer</a> to the skin. The wafer should fit snuggly to avoid leakage. <br /><br /> Due to the way modern ileostomy pouches are designed, they usually remain inconspicuous under regular clothing. This is because pouches lie flat to the body. Pouches can be worn inside or outside of underwear, so you can wear it in the way that is most comfortable for you. Just make sure that you don't apply pressure to the stoma by wearing tight clothing or belts over it. <br /><br /> Activities -- As soon as you have your doctor's permission and are feeling up to it, you can engage in all of the activities and sports you enjoyed prior to surgery. This includes swimming, jogging, skiing, tennis, etc. However, you will want to avoid rough contact sports (IE football) and heavy lifting. <br /><br /> Work -- to give yourself peace of mind when you return to work, make sure you keep an extra pouch and a change of clothing on you at all times. <br /><br /> New Diet -- Even though you can eat virtually any food after you have your ileostomy, it's a good idea to continue avoiding foods that had a serious impact on your Crohn's condition and maintain a healthy diet. Furthermore, you should lower your intact of tough and high-fiber foods such as raw vegetables. These types of food are hard for your small intestine to digest and this could lead to blockage. <br /><br /> Emotional Repercussions - At first, living with an ileosotomy can be hard to deal with. Many people feel embarrassed about their ileostomy and are afraid to start new relationships, or open up emotionally to others. The best way to make these feelings of shame and insecurity pass is to share your feelings and educate others about your condition. You'd be surprised at how understanding people are who love and care about you. <br /><br /> If you have a hard time talking to your family, friends, spouse, or partner, at first, consider joining a support group and talk with other people who live with ostomoies. <br /><br /> Keep in mind, an ileostomy does not stop a person from engaging in sexual activity, sports, traveling, or most activities. The only thing holding a person back from doing the things they enjoy are their thoughts and attitude. <bio>If you are looking for more help for Chron's Disease symptoms please visit <a href="http://www.natural-crohns-disease-relief.com" >http://www.natural-crohns-disease-relief.com</a> and sign up for a free newsletter. </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/weight+loss+surgery" rel="tag">Weight loss surgery</a> is something that a lot of people are turning to because regular dieting may be impossible or very difficult for them. Why is regular dieting hard for some? Well, dieting consists of also exercising and some individuals may be unable to exercise the way they need to because of the amount of weight they are carrying, because of a physical injury or disability, or because of an illness that prevents them from doing so. Perhaps there are other <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/health+factors" rel="tag">health factors</a> that keep them from dieting the way they need to. That's when weight loss surgery becomes an option.<br><br>The different types of weight loss surgery<br><br>There are five different types of weight loss surgery that a person can opt for. Those types are:<br><br>- Vertical Banded Gastroplasty - The stomach is divided into two parts with surgical <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/staples" rel="tag">staples</a>. The upper part is the smaller part so that the intake of food can be reduced. A small opening is placed between the two parts so that food can slowly move into the larger section. There is also a band placed around the opening so that it doesn't enlarge. There are some complications involving wearing of the band and the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/staple+line" rel="tag">staple line</a> breaking down. It is rare, but <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stomach+juices" rel="tag">stomach juices</a> may leak outside of the stomach or infection could result.<br><br>- Lap-Band Surgery - A band that is inflatable is used to divide the stomach into a smaller section and a larger section. Just with Vertical Banded Gastroplasty, a small opening allows food to make its way to the larger part of the stomach for digestion. The band is inflated by injecting saline into a valve. Saline can also be taken away. People should be around 100 pounds overweight to receive this surgery and they need to be individuals who have failed at loosing weight through other means that have been supervised by a doctor. Risks are minimal, but some side effects such as heartburn and nausea may exist.<br><br>- Roux-en- Y Gastric Bypass - This surgery is more involved in that the stomach is divided into two parts by surgical staples. However, the small <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stomach+pouch" rel="tag">stomach pouch</a> is connected to the middle of the small intestine. This is so food goes directly into the small intestine. The amount of nutrients and calories that are absorbed by the body are reduced. That can have its pros and its cons. Some have been known to become nutritionally deficient. If food moves too quickly through the small intestine, "Dumping Syndrome" can occur.<br><br>- Biliopancreatic Diversion - This is a procedure that is not used in the United States because it involves removing a part of the stomach and then connecting the remainder to the end of the small intestine. Basically, the food is deposited into the colon around the area in which bile and digestive juices are still mixed with the food. This is the least frequently used method because of nutritional deficiencies.<br><br>- Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy - This is a procedure that only 15 surgeons worldwide perform. It restricts the amount of food a person can take in. There is no bypassing of the intestines, but the stomach is basically cut in half vertically rather than divided into two horizontal halves. The larger part is removed.<br><br>If you're considering surgery<br><br>If you're considering surgery, you now know of five different types of weight loss surgery, including the lap band. Yes, two of these are not performed as often as the others, but it is still good to know they exist in case these methods are available to you. Each has its pros, it's cons and each have their own risks. Be mindful of all of it.<bio>CIBO Clinic offers safe and sustainable results for <a href="http://www.ciboclinic.com/comparison.asp">weight loss surgery</a>. The <a href="http://www.ciboclinic.com">Lap Band</a> reduces the amount of food your stomach can hold and allows you to feel fuller longer.</bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[ Abdominal pain with diarrhea and weight loss for no apparent reason can be an early indication of Crohn's disease. <br /><br /> The symptoms of Crohn's disease can vary in intensity from mild to severe to even life altering. Your health can suffer greatly if you are experiencing intestinal disorder. Some Crohn's sufferers find themselves giving up some of their basic daily activities just in case of an episode of Crohn's disease eruption. <br /><br /> Crohn's disease is an inflammation or ulceration of the digestive tract and is most often seen in the lowest portion of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestine" rel="tag">small intestine</a> known as the ileum. Crohn's disease can also be seen in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/large+intestine" rel="tag">large intestine</a> or colon. <br /><br /> Symptoms of Crohn's disease include abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, poor appetite, fever, night sweats, rectal pain and rectal bleeding. These Crohn's disease symptoms can vary in severity and can show themselves all together or a few at a time. Regardless any of these symptoms can make you feel horribly and can invade your plans for the day. <br /><br /> There are <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/several+different+types" rel="tag">several different types</a> of Crohn's disease which include Crohn's <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/colitis" rel="tag">colitis</a>, Crohn's enteritis, Crohn's terminal iletis, Crohn's entero-colitis and ileo-colitis. <br /><br /> The two most common types of Crohn's disease are Crohn's <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/terminal+ileitis" rel="tag">terminal ileitis</a> and Crohn's ileo-colitis. <br /><br /> Crohn's terminal ileitis is an inflammation that invades, as its names suggests, only the very end of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestines" rel="tag">small intestines</a>. Most commonly with terminal ileitis, symptoms experienced are often seen as abdominal pain and diarrhea. <br /><br /> Crohn's ileo-colitis is one of the other most common types of Crohn's disease seen today. With ileo-colitis, the colon and small intestine become horribly inflamed and show up as abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. <br /><br /> If you see these symptoms then it is important to see your healthcare provider to determine if you have a definitive diagnosis of Crohn's disease. To determine if you have Crohn's disease, your healthcare provider will take a complete medical history and perform a physical exam. Your physician may also order imaging test such as a barium x-ray to look at the intestine and the colon. It is also rather common for physicians to order a colonoscopy to determine a definitive diagnosis of Crohn's disease. This allows your physician to look directly into the colon to see exactly what is going on. <br /><br /> Unfortunately at this time, Crohn's disease cannot be cured. However, there are many medications on today's market that can help manage the disease. Medications can reduce the inflammation and infection often seen in conjunction with the worsening symptoms of Crohn's disease. <br /><br /> Remember, if you are suffering from health issues involving your intestinal function, it is important to seek medical care so that you can receive the proper treatment. Crohn's disease is a serious health issue and one that deserves your attention. <bio>For more important information on health topics sure to visit <a href="http://www.the-health-hub.com" >http://www.the-health-hub.com</a> where you will find information and resources on personal health such as Crohn's Disease, conditions and diseases, diet and nutrition, fitness and many other articles that you can view at <a href="http://the-health-hub.com" >http://the-health-hub.com</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/food+allergy" rel="tag">Food allergy</a> remains one of the most persistent forms of allergic reaction. No one knows why people have certain allergic responses to different types of food. But it is a fact that once a person is exposed to the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/food+allergen" rel="tag">food allergen</a>, the symptoms will surely follow. <br /><br /> Gluten allergy is a food allergy that makes the sufferer sensitive to gluten. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/coeliac+disease" rel="tag">Coeliac disease</a> is a health condition in the small intestine. What happens to a person with gluten allergy is once the allergen comes in <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/contact" rel="tag">contact</a> with the small intestine, it causes the immune system to attack the lining of the bowel. <br /><br /> This attack on the small intestine's lining of the gluten <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/allergy+sufferer" rel="tag">allergy sufferer</a> weakens the stomach and can cause serious health problems in the future. The delicate lining is responsible for the absorption of nutrients and vitamins in our body. Once it is weakened, we lose our capacity to effectively turn food into energy, <br /><br /> Gluten allergy starts at a young age, right after the weaning period and the mother is feeding the baby with cereals. There are no specific reasons why a person develops the gluten allergy but when it happens, the only thing the gluten allergy sufferer can do is avoid gluten at all cost. <br /><br /> Symptoms of Gluten Allergy <br /><br /> Gluten is usually found in wheat products. Breads, pasta and other baked goods can be considered dangerous to a person with gluten allergy. Biscuits, pastries, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/breakfast+cereals" rel="tag">breakfast cereals</a> and instant soups and sauces also have gluten. The symptoms of a gluten allergy differ from children and adults. <br /><br /> Children with gluten allergy may suffer from slow physical growth, weight loss, with poor appetite. Gluten allergic symptoms also include vomiting and diarrhea. Because the small intestine's lining is damaged, the vitamins and minerals do not go to the body. The kids end up looking thin, pale and have no energy at all. <br /><br /> In adults, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/gluten+allergy+symptoms" rel="tag">gluten allergy symptoms</a> are similar, with loss of weight, diarrhea or constipation complicating the disease. Aside from this, adults often complain about depression, extreme fatigue, lethargy, bone pain and ulcers in the sufferer's mouth. <br /><br /> Treatment <br /><br /> Treatment for gluten allergies begins like all other food allergy, avoiding contact with the allergen. There are certain food substitutes for gluten allergy sufferers like using sunflower oil instead of the usual cooking oil and drinking wines instead of beer. <br /><br /> There are medications available to these sufferers. But unlike other food allergies that show external symptoms like rashes, gluten allergy destroys from the inside, making diagnosis and detection hard. Oral medication can help ease the pain from the small intestine and vitamin supplements must also be taken along with it. <br /><br /> Gluten allergy prevention <br /><br /> Gluten allergy sufferers are asked to be vigilant in monitoring their diet. Reading the labels for anything with wheat is a good start. Self-discipline is the key to beating gluten allergy. The food selection for coeliac disease sufferers is still varied like fruits, salads and vegetables, rice, corn, nuts, meat and chicken eggs and dairy products, fish and seafood. <br /><br /> What could be the worst-case scenario for gluten allergy sufferers? If left untreated, coeliac disease can result in anemia, bone disease and some form of cancer. The best advise is to steer clear of gluten-laden foods. The more the person does not intake gluten, the better their chances of not having a serious health problem in the future. <bio>For answers to All your frequently asked questions about gluten allergy, please go to: <a href="http://gluten-allergy.allergyanswers.net/" >http://gluten-allergy.allergyanswers.net/</a> or go to: <a href="http://allergyanswers.net/" >http://allergyanswers.net/</a> <a href="http://allergyanswers.blogspot.com/" >http://allergyanswers.blogspot.com/</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

A condition that causes abdominal pains, diarrhea, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/constipation" rel="tag">constipation</a>, bloating, or a combination of those symptoms, IBS is a disorder that is illusive in nature. <br /><br /> The reason that IBS is so <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/intriguing" rel="tag">intriguing</a> is the fact that it has no known cause. There are theories about the causes of the disorder, but if a doctor was to examine an <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ibs+patient" rel="tag">IBS patient</a>'s intestine, the results of that examination might shock you. The intestine would appear to be normal in every way with no apparent damage. <br /><br /> If this is true, what causes IBS? Finally, as technology and research evolves, more theories are developing on possible causes of IBS. In the past, many <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ibs+patients" rel="tag">IBS patients</a> were deemed "<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/hypochondriacs" rel="tag">hypochondriacs</a>". Was the disease really in their head? <br /><br /> One of the theories of the cause of IBS has to do with stress. Patients who suffer from IBS notice that their symptoms are greatly agitated when anxiety levels are the highest. This is mainly due to the fact that stress can bring on the muscle spasms that often either trap gas and fecal matter in your system or rush food through your system. The results are either constipation or diarrhea. In many cases, severe abdominal pains accompany this constipation or diarrhea. <br /><br /> Other possible causes have been suggested. Some of these are immune system malfunction and sensitive reactive colon. These were two of the more common theories, but many doctors are beginning to think otherwise as research continues. <br /><br /> It is possible that irritable bowel syndrome can be due to a large amount of bacteria in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestine" rel="tag">small intestine</a>. This could explain the change in bowel movements, gas, pain, etc. Since there are so few bacteria in your small intestine, a rapid increase in bacteria could really impact on your system. <br /><br /> Another possible cause of IBS is intolerance of foods. Depending on the individual, certain foods which would be harmless to the average person can cause an IBS episode. If an IBS patient can identify these "trigger" foods, they can remove those foods from the diet, cutting down the IBS symptoms. The good news is that doctors often say that, after taking a break from those foods, they can later be reincorporated into your meal plans. <br /><br /> The bottom line, unfortunately, is there is no known cause for IBS. Doctors have theories, and many medical professionals believe some of the above mentioned things can contribute to IBS symptoms. The truth is that the real root of IBS is a mystery. As research continues, we can hope to eventually find a definitive answer. Until then, if you are suffering from the disorder, you can be comforted by the fact that your doctor can help you devise the best treatment plan to help you cope with this disorder. Many patients suffering from the disorder have learned to control their symptoms and resume their full, active pre-IBS lives. It is also important to seek a proper diagnosis to ensure that you aren't suffering from another type of similar IBD. <bio>Susan Reynolds has an interest in Health related topics. <content:encoded><![CDATA[A <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/gluten+allergy" rel="tag">gluten allergy</a> can result in <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/coeliac+disease" rel="tag">Coeliac disease</a> which is a condition of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestine" rel="tag">small intestine</a>. Gluten is found in rye, barley, and wheat and it reacts with the small bowel causing the immune system to attack the bowels lining. <br /><br /> Sometimes it's subtle while other times you know that you have a problem. When it is not treated it can lead to anemia, diseases of the bone, and even some types of cancer. Of course the best treatment for a gluten allergy is to avoid foods with gluten. <br /><br /> What causes the gluten allergy? Gluten is two proteins glutenin and gliadin which when mixed with water become sticky like dough. In the small bowel are little tiny fingers called villi which are supposed to absorb nutrients but with a gluten allergy your immune system attacks them and destroys them. <br /><br /> The symptoms of a gluten allergy in a child include irritability and generally not feeling happy, poor appetite, not gaining weight, swollen stomach , arms and legs become thin and wasted. In adult symptoms can be very similar but also include horrible smelling diarrhea, constipation, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/abdominal+bloating" rel="tag">abdominal bloating</a>, tiredness, depression, bone pain, thinning of the bones, itchy skin, and sometimes even a difficulty becoming pregnant. <br /><br /> Symptoms can also include nausea, vomiting, stomach ache, diarrhea, stomach cramps, skin disorders, eczema, dermatitis, respiratory infections including asthma, hypertension, headache, and even <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/anaphylactic+shock" rel="tag">anaphylactic shock</a>. Great you know what the problem is and you are doing your best to avoid wheat but it's in the most unexpected places and you do occasionally mess up. <br /><br /> Diagnosing your gluten allergy might include blood tests for anemia, iron and folic acid, as well as blood tests for different antibodies. An endoscopy test with a biopsy might also be conducted. <br /><br /> A gluten allergy is not preventable and the best treatment is to have a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/gluten+free+diet" rel="tag">gluten free diet</a> to stop the damage to the small intestine and even reverse it. You will need to do you homework so that you know which foods contain gluten. There are many that you would not generally think of that do such as cooking oil. <br /><br /> There are some excellent books on dealing with a gluten allergy that can help you as well as help you learn about natural products that can help heal the intestine. Your doctor will also be able to assist you and a dietician can help you with your diet. <br /><br /> Don't forget to heal your body with vitamins and minerals as well as herbal supplements that can boost your immune system and help bring you back into balance. Healing the intestine is an important part of bringing your body back into total health. <br /><br /> Complications from a gluten allergy are very rare. Occasionally infertility does occur, autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis, and a slight increased risk of bowel cancer can occur. Studies have shown that after 5 years of being on a gluten free diet your risks of all cancers associated with gluten are removed. <br /><br /> Foods that contain gluten are everywhere -- after all it is a staple in the American diet. But both the protein and the gluten in the wheat are a common allergen. Dealing with a gluten allergy can be frustrating because there are so many restrictions. Learning how to properly deal with it will reduce your frustration and keep you healthier. <bio>Get all the latest information about allergies, from the only true source at <a href="http://www.1allergyinformation.com" >http://www.1allergyinformation.com</a> Be sure to check out our gluten allergy pages </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/gastric+bypass+surgery" rel="tag">Gastric bypass surgery</a> is a common form of weight loss surgery that results in outstanding weight loss with minimal side effects. But once you undergo the gastric bypass surgery procedure you have to accept lifelong changes in your diet. The post-diet of gastric bypass surgery includes an adequate intake of protein, taking vitamin and mineral supplements including multivitamin, iron and calcium, B12 and avoiding sweets and fatty foods. <br /><br /> Types of gastric bypass surgery <br /><br /> In gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon takes off a large portion of the stomach leaving behind a tiny pouch. It is this small pouch that prevents overdose of eating as it can take very less amount of food. Moreover, with large parts of your stomach and small intestine bypassed, most of the nutrients and calories in the food do not get absorbed at all. This helps the person from gaining excess weight. <br /><br /> There are several types of bypass surgery operations. They are: <br /><br /> §Roux-en-Y gastric bypass [RGB] -- this is a common surgery where a small <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stomach+pouch" rel="tag">stomach pouch</a> is created by stapling part of the stomach together or by vertical banding. This reduces the amount of food to be taken. Then a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/duodenum" rel="tag">duodenum</a> as well as the first portion of jejunum. This causes reduced calorie and rapid nutrient absorption. <br /><br /> §Extensive gastric bypass [<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/biliopancreatic+diversion" rel="tag">biliopancreatic diversion</a>] -- in this complicated surgery, the lower portion of the stomach is removed. The small pouch that remains connected to the final segment of the small intestine completely bypasses both duodenum and jejunum. <br /><br /> People who undergo gastric bypass surgery always lose two-thirds of their excess weight within two years. <br /><br /> Risks of gastric bypass surgery <br /><br /> Gastric bypass surgery causes "dumping syndromes" where the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stomach+contents" rel="tag">stomach contents</a> move too rapidly through the small intestine. The usual symptoms of gastric bypass surgeries include weakness, sweating, fainting, nausea, diarrhea, as well as inability to eat sweets. <br /><br /> People who undergo this procedure are at risk of: <br /><br /> §Band erosion -- the band closing off part of the stomach disintegrates <br /><br /> §Pouch stretching -- stomach gets bigger overtime, stretching back to its normal size before surgery <br /><br /> §Leakage of stomach contents into the abdomen [acid can eat away other organs] <br /><br /> §Nutritional deficiencies causing health problems <br /><br /> §Breakdown of staple lines -- band and staple fall apart, reversing procedure <br /><br /> Gastric bypass diet <br /><br /> Gastric bypass diet helps the patients to drop 50% to 90% of their overall excess fats. The diet is designed to bring about significant weight loss. It basically includes foods that are high in protein and low in fat, fiber, calories, and sugar. You should have lots of vitamins and minerals. Iron, vitamin, folate and calcium are the best nutrients for patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery. <br /><br /> You can undergo gastric bypass surgery only if you have been obese for at least 5 years, do not have a history of alcohol abuse, and do not possess untreated depression and range between the ages 18 to 65. <bio>Author Barney Garcia is a proud contributing author and enjoys writing about many different topics. <content:encoded><![CDATA[The ileocecal valve, which is made up of sphincter muscles that close the ileum, prevents toxins and other materials that are released by the appendix from entering into the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestine" rel="tag">small intestine</a>. Additionally, the ileocecal valve helps to keep digested material in the small intestine until all of the nutrients have been absorbed. When the food residue is ready for elimination, the small intestine mixes bile, mucus, and other excretions with the food residue and releases it systematically through the ileocecal valve into the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/large+intestine" rel="tag">large intestine</a>. This process prevents an overload of material in the intestine for the body to eliminate.<br><br>When the toxic material of the colon is able to enter back into the intestine, where it becomes rapidly reabsorbed, ileocecal valve syndrome occurs, which can lead to infection and disease. Symptoms of ileocecal valve syndrome include constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/irregular+bowel+movements" rel="tag">irregular bowel movements</a>, lower right bowel tenderness, acne, immune weakness, migraines, and duodenal ulcers.<br><br>To avoid ileocecal valve syndrome one should eat a diet that is high in fiber and includes whole grains. These whole grains should be soaked and cooked in order to avoid irritating the valve. Foods that cause constipation such as diary products, meat, and bananas should be avoided. Raisins, figs, and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stewed+prunes" rel="tag">stewed prunes</a> should be eaten for breakfast. More <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fresh+fruits+and+vegetables" rel="tag">fresh fruits and vegetables</a> should be added to the diet. Softer raw vegetables such as leaf lettuce, spinach, avocados, sprouts, and tomatoes should be used first.<br><br>Additionally, one should reduce the amount of meat that they eat and take a fiber supplement in order to avoid constipation. Fasting on juices two or three days a week will help to speed the healing process of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/digestive+tracts" rel="tag">digestive tracts</a>. Grains that are thermos-cooked are healing on the digestive tract and rich in enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and protein. The slow cooking process protects the body from destruction of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/vital+enzymes" rel="tag">vital enzymes</a>. Milet, buckwheat, and basmati brown rice can also be eaten for breakfast, as they are easy for the body to digest and extremely nourishing. Raw vegetables and fruits, steamed vegetables, yams, and avocados are all also extremely helpful in healing the digestive tract, so they are recommended.<br><br>Nutritional supplements that can assist with ileocecal valve syndrome include antioxidants, vitamin A, B-complex, vitamin C with bioflavonoids, calcium, magnesium, essential fatty acids, blue-green algae, acidophilus, and plant digestive enzymes. Also, aloe vera juice, cat's claw, grape seed extract, pau d'arco, licorice, goldenseal, slippery elm, and comfrey are great herbal aids for helping for ileocecal valve syndrome.<br><br>Colon health is a lot more important than most people realize, as the digestive process is directly related to the health of the body, immune system function, and overall longevity. When any disease occurs, the colon should be the first thing looked to for treatment. By understanding what it means to have a healthy colon, adding fiber, nutritional supplements, herbal aids, and a change in diet, one can promote overall colon health. Eating habits should be changed slowly and unhealthy, nutrition robbing foods should be eliminated from the diet and replaced with whole grain foods, fruits, and vegetables.<bio>More information on <a href="http://vitanetonline.com/searchs/Fiber/Fiber/" target="fiber">fiber</a> and nutrition is available at VitaNet ®, LLC Health Food Store. http://vitanetonline.com/</bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Crohn's Disease is a disorder that most commonly affects the colon or <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestine" rel="tag">small intestine</a>. Crohn's disease is chronic and causes inflammation of the digestive or <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/gastrointestinal+tract" rel="tag">gastrointestinal tract</a>. Crohn's belongs to a category of illnesses known as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/inflammatory+bowel+disease" rel="tag">inflammatory bowel disease</a> (IBD). One disease related to Crohn's is known as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ulcerative+colitis" rel="tag">ulcerative colitis</a>, and also belongs to IBD category of disease. The symptoms of both diseases are very similar and it is often difficult to accurately diagnose. Nearly one in ten of ulcerative colitis and misdiagnosed as indeterminate colitis. The strong, and to some what, identical symptoms of the two diseases both show signs or cause the response of the bodies immune system to be described as abnormal. <br /><br /> in our immune system we have cells and proteins to protect us. attacks often occur on intestinal bacteria or microbes thinking they are foreign and so begin attacking what is in fact cells that occur naturally in our bodies. This process inevitably causes ulcerations and bowel injury. This occurs because the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/white+blood+cells" rel="tag">white blood cells</a> that move in to affected area produce chronic inflammation. These are the symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. <br /><br /> Crohn's disease can affect the gastrointestinal tract and is most commonly found at the beginning of the large intestine and the end of the small intestine. The other disease mentioned earlier, ulcerative colitis, is only seen to occur in the colon, and only affects the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/superficial+layers" rel="tag">superficial layers</a> of the colon. It usually begins at the anus and moves progressively towards the colon. In Crohn's disease, all layers of the bowel can be involved and the disease can affect different isolated areas within the bowel. <br /><br /> What the exact cause of IBD is still unknown. It seems to appear that the immune system once turned on, knows not how to turn it's self back off. Some studies suggest that foreign particles trigger the immune system defenses, but there is no conclusive evidence to back up this theory. You may be wondering just how safe are you from developing an IBD disorder. Again there is very little known about this but it can be caused by a complex interaction of factors. Some of the factors that may contribute to someone developing Crohn's disease are environmental factors, human genetics, possibly hereditary, and the immune system itself. Many scientists now believe that it is foreign bodies (virus or bacteria) that trigger a response of the immune system to fight, and then lead to the disease it's self when immune system is unable to stop. <bio>Janie Jonah <a href="http://www.perfectdrugrx.com" >http://www.perfectdrugrx.com</a> (c) 2006, PerfectDrugRx. <content:encoded><![CDATA[This is the third article in a five part series devoted to digestion where we have been following a nutritionally poor meal, typical of America, from the mouth to the esophagus to the stomach. We have seen that the food enters the mouth where enzymes are added via <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/sublingual+glands" rel="tag">sublingual glands</a>. The meal then moves through the esophagus where it is warmed, and then to the stomach where pre-digestion takes place depending on the nutritional value of the meal (does the meal have enzymes to digest protein, fats and carbohydrates). Then <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stomach+acid" rel="tag">stomach acid</a> and a strong protein digesting enzyme are added to complete the stomachs processing of this meal. Now we will follow this nutritionally poor meal from the stomach into the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/duodenum" rel="tag">duodenum</a>.<br><br><b>The Function of the Duodenum</b><br><br>The chyme (digested food from stomach the consistency of a milk shake) is slowly transported from the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/pylorus" rel="tag">pylorus</a> (a valve at the end portion of the stomach) through the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/pyloric+sphincter" rel="tag">pyloric sphincter</a> into the first <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/part+of+the+small+intestine" rel="tag">part of the small intestine</a> called the duodenum where further digestion occurs.<br><br>The inside wall of the duodenum has a smooth surface like the skin on your face. It is at this point that the acidic chyme must be alkalized so the assimilation of this nutrient filled liquid is as complete as possible. In addition, this alkalization is very important so that the acid from the stomach is neutralized and will not burn the walls of the small intestine.<br><br>The duodenum, an eight to nine inch long chamber is where more chemicals of digestion are added. The Ampule of Papilla is located in the duodenum wall. This is an opening where bile from the gallbladder, and enzymes and bicarbonate from the pancreas enter the duodenum. They combine with the chyme to begin the final part of digestion in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/small+intestines" rel="tag">small intestines</a>. Enzymes are also excreted through the walls of the duodenum to assist with this digestion.<br><br><b>The Average American Meal and what happens at the Duodenum</b><br><br>Your body is aware of what you have eaten (there are sensors in the duodenum) and it calls on your liver, gallbladder, pancreas and other avenues of digestive chemicals to assist in the breakdown and assimilation of nutrients and protection of the digestive tract. Your body expects you to bring in live food rich in enzymes (uncooked foods such as produce) to assist in this digestive process.<br><br>Here at the duodenum is where the body has a chance to recover from any mistakes made at your mouth. But without enough raw food to supply the enzymes and alkaline that was needed to create a balanced meal no recovery will take place. A meal totally unprepared will continue through the duodenum to the small intestine where impossible assimilation is undertaken. From this point on the damage to your body takes place over and over bringing disease.<br><br>If you do not bring in enough live enzymes with the food you have eaten you may expect to have acid indigestion (undigested food), acid reflux, ulcers and constipation all caused by food improperly prepared at your mouth (no live enzymes). As this improperly prepared food enters the duodenum, your digestive awareness will call on the pancreas and gallbladder to do the job you did not do. Your pancreas and gallbladder will then strain to prepare this acidic chyme for release into the small intestine. Allow this to happen enough times and you will get sick.<br><br>Constantly releasing acidic unprepared chyme from the duodenum to the small intestine, can lead to such diseases as Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease and leaky gut. These in turn can lead to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, muscular dystrophy, etc.<bio>Paul Blake is a doctor of herbal medicine and a master herbalist. <content:encoded><![CDATA[Most of us at least once in our life have experienced the severity of diarrhea that brings the life to a temporary standstill! Then the same of us also have viewed the other side of the coin that is a painful experience of constipation! There are also people among us who suffer from the spells of diarrhea and bouts of constipation quite frequently. Well, all these are the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/symptoms+of+irritable+bowel+syndrome" rel="tag">symptoms of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/irritable+bowel+syndrome" rel="tag">irritable bowel syndrome</a></a> that results from a clogged colon and leads to more <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/crucial" rel="tag">crucial</a> complications like malignancy or <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cardiovascular+diseases" rel="tag">cardiovascular diseases</a>. <br /><br /> But no need to get panicked, there are millions of Americans who suffer from the same disorder as you and there are many effective and workable solutions to this problem. Detoxification of organs like kidney and colon is the focal point in these treatments and the process starts right with the cleansing of colon which is the most vital organ in the waste management of our bodies. <br /><br /> So far as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/colon+cleansing" rel="tag">colon cleansing</a> is concerned, you will come across various methods that have their respective benefits and shortcomings. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/colon+hydrotherapy" rel="tag">Colon Hydrotherapy</a> has remained a trusted method for years for several reasons; let us examine them below. <br /><br /> Do you know what the greatest virtue of Colon Hydrotherapy is? It is the simplicity of the procedure. It is a process where filtered warm water is used to cleanse the colon. The water is gently pushed into colon through the anus via a plastic disposable tube. <br /><br /> Also known as '<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/colonic+irrigation" rel="tag">colonic irrigation</a>' and 'colenemas', the hydrotherapy is so easy that you can get it done at home through suitable home applications, certified by FDA. It is generally recommended that the procedure be administered by a licensed professional especially when the intestine is in really bad shape. When performed by a professional, the process ensures maximum safety and optimum results. When it is performed in clinic the whole procedure takes approximately 90 minutes to finish. <br /><br /> However there are many people who would rather stay away from hydrotherapy in spite of its many benefits. They have their reasons; first of all it is claimed to be costly that takes approximately $25 and $100 per treatment. Those who are against colon hydrotherapy also hold that it cleanses the large intestine only. <br /><br /> Let us see what experts say in answer. They hold that when hydrotherapy is carried on in conjunction with oxygen colon cleanser, it can effectively eliminate in the long run the impacted toxins from both the small and large intestine. Then there can be no better way than hydrotherapy to rapidly get rid of the impacted materials from the large intestine by the flush of water. <br /><br /> A last piece of information: You may probably need a series of colon hydrotherapy, instead of just one. While the first few sittings are meant to force out the gas, it is only after a few session that old encrusted feculent matters start to come out. As your colon has taken years to reach this miserable condition, you should also be patient enough to let the hydrotherapy take its time to eliminate the clogged up fecal matters. Patience is the key to get great results from a course of colon hydrotherapy. <bio>Rastus Filby has experience with colon hydrotherapy. <content:encoded><![CDATA[Cosmetic weight loss <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/plastic+surgery" rel="tag">plastic surgery</a> or bariatric surgery is fast gaining popularity because increasing affluence and knowledge of using surgery as a form of targetted or fast weight loss. <br /><br /> Patients may opt for a weight loss plastic surgery out of reshaping their body shape or simply to improve their health and escape from severe obesity. <br /><br /> There are basically three basic types of weight loss plastic surgery :- <br /><br /> There are the restrictive surgical procedures like the lap band surgery to make the stomach smaller and thus limiting food consumption. <br /><br /> Then there are the malabsorptive surgeries to shorten the intestine that comes in contact with food so that the body absorbs less calories from the food consumed. <br /><br /> Finally, there are surgeries that combine both restrictive and malasorptive <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/plastic+surgeries" rel="tag">plastic surgeries</a>. <br /><br /> Restrictive surgeries encourage easy weight loss in two ways. First, the surgeries reduce the amount of food consumed. The stomach is shrunk by creating a small pouch at the top of where food enters and therefore less food is consumed by the patients. Restrictive surgery also make patients feel full longer because the lower outlet of the pouch is made smaller so that food empties slowly. Lap band cosmetic weight loss surgery and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/vertical+banded+gastroplasty" rel="tag">Vertical banded gastroplasty</a> are examples of restrictive surgeries. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/gastric+bypass+surgery" rel="tag">Gastric bypass surgery</a> is a combination both the restrictive and the malabsorptive surgery. This surgery is done by creating a small stomach pouch to restrict the amount of food intake. Then a bypass of the duodenum and other parts of the intestine is constructed to cause malabsorption. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and Distal Gastric Bypass are examples of the gastric bypass weight loss plastic surgery. <br /><br /> What are the risks of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/weight+loss+surgeries" rel="tag">weight loss surgeries</a>? <br /><br /> Health risks are almost the same for both restrictive and gastric <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/bypass+surgeries" rel="tag">bypass surgeries</a> although the risk of nutritional deficiencies for calcium, Vitamin B12 and iron are higherin gastric bypass surgery patients. Intestinal leaking may also occur. <br /><br /> Gastric bypass surgery patients may experienced the andquot;Dumping Syndrome.andquot; This is when food moves too fast through the small intestine and the patient may experience nausea, cold sweat, dizzy and fainting spells, weakness and occasionally, even diarrhea. <br /><br /> Patients can opt for the either the traditional open surgery or laparoscopic sugery the latter being that there will be smaller scars as well as less down time since the bariatric weight loss surgery patient can recover faster. <br /><br /> As with any form of surgeries, patients must ask their surgeons which for of cosmetic surgery is best suited for them. Before a patient is committed to undergo a surgery, he must have tried other healthy means to lose weight. A weight loss surgery should always be the last option when all other efforts failed to help the patient to reduce weight. <bio>Chris Chew is the author of andquot;Burn Fat Build Muscles Fastandquot;.
