About a year ago my family and I began making plans for building a new home. My husband and I had never built a home of our own, but we wanted some say in the lay out of the house and in the details of the house that would make it feel like a home for us. We began consulting an architect and we had plans that we loved within a month. Next came the long process of watching carpenters and builders at work making our dreams become a reality.

I was amazed as I would stop by the worksite on a regular basis to see the progress that the carpenters and builders were making. I had never known anyone that was a carpenter by profession before, so I quite honestly didn't know what hard work they did each and every day. In fact, I took the building of homes and businesses for granted until I saw what hard work was put into my own home. During those long months of building I grew to have more appreciation for carpenters than I ever expected to.

I admire carpenters simply because of how hard their days of work really are. There is no part of me that could handle being outdoors all day regardless of changes in the weather. The carpenters were at work on our home when it was ninety degrees and sunny and when it was forty degrees and rainy coldly. I am so impressed by their work ethic. I spent several hours at the site on various days and never heard any complaining from the carpenters. It was like they were made to work this hard and their bodies actually thrived off of it.

I so admire carpenters because they help make peoples' dreams into reality. They are the ones that look at the house plans and begin forming the house from the ground up. Their magic makes the walls go up and the ceiling go on. They literally build homes for families to live in, and I think that is a noble and honorable profession for anyone.

So the next time you drive by a construction site and see carpenters and builders hard at work, be assured that they really are working hard and that they are good at what they do. They are making homes and businesses for the rest of us, so the least we could do is learn to appreciate their skills and to be thankful for the nice and comfortable homes and offices we get to live in each day. <bio>Belina Storrey is an interior designer that gets to work closely with carpenters often. She loves seeing carpenters at work building people homes of their very own. See http://www.allcarpenters.info for more. </bio>

A carpenter is a very skilled craftsman who creates objects out of wood. The projects that a carpenter can work on range from remodeling homes, to making furniture. You can find a number of different types of carpenters and the type you hire would depend on the scope of the project in hand.

There are rough carpenters who specialize in roofing, framing and structural work and they are generally hired to work on home construction and remodeling. They may also be hired to work on additions that are being made to buildings. This work is not artistic like other forms of carpentry as there are no fine details or exact finishing edges required. When hiring a rough carpenter there are some things that you should look for in order for a good quality job to be done. The carpenter should be experienced in their trade and should be able to provide references of previous work that they have carried out. It is important in some cases that the individual has knowledge of structural safety and local building codes. They must comply with the requirements of your area. There are many rough work carpenters around who will provide a quality product.

Another kind of carpenter is a finish carpenter. This individual has an eye for exact finishes and joints and will artistically craft fine wood pieces. These carpenters are more expensive to hire but this is due to the fact that they are highly skilled and tend to have a lot of experience and therefore you will get a quality job for the money that you have paid. You will need to look at previous work of the carpenter and spend time discussing the ideas that you have so you get the product that you want. A finish carpenter can also be used for home remodeling and other building work if the work that is needed is intricate and requires detail and artistic flair.

The more jobs that a carpenter has, the more skilled they will be at their job. Therefore it is important to ask to see references of jobs in the past in order to make sure they will do a good job of your product. If the job is small and you do not want to pay a lot of money then an inexpensive carpenter will do a good job. However, if the project is large and important then it will be an advantage to spend more money and hire a more experienced and skilled workman. This will ensure a quality product and, although will cost more, will save disappointment when the job is complete.

When hiring an electrician, make sure that you get a written contract detailed with specifications of the work, requirements and any special considerations to be made. The total price of the project should also be included in the contract along with payment procedures that are to take place. Although the carpenter will ask for a down payment so materials can be obtained, the final payment will not be required until after the project has been completed. A warranty should also be included and if not then you should ask for one so that you can be sure that any tweaking or repairs that are necessary in the future will be completed by the carpenter within the scope of the work. <bio>James Copper is a writer for http://www.newcareerskills.co.uk </bio>

A carpenter is a person who creates objects made of wood for various projects, from home remodeling to furniture. These skilled craftsmen should be able to complete the work per your specifications. There are several types of carpenters to choose from and hiring one should be determined based on the scope of the project.

A rough carpenter is someone who specializes in roofing, framing and structural work. These designs are not likely to need exact finishing edges or artistic ability. These people are generally used for home construction, additions and remodels. Choose an individual who has experience and can provide references of past projects. They may also need to have knowledge of structural safety and local building codes. Ask what requirements are necessary for your area and ensure they comply with those standards. If the project is small, budget may be a consideration. Many inexpensive rough carpenters are available who will provide a quality product.

A finish carpenter is someone who artistically crafts fine wood pieces with an eye toward exact joints and finishes. There is minimal margin for error so carpenters of this sort are generally highly skilled and experienced. Because of this, the cost is typically a bit more expensive but you will get a quality product. These types specialize in furnishings, cabinetry and other fine woodworking. Larger projects such as home remodels and building may also utilize this type if it is necessary to have precision or an artistic flair. It is important to discuss the ideas you have and get feedback on how the carpenter will accomplish the task. Look at pictures of previous work to get a feel for their style and skill level.

When hiring a carpenter get a contract in writing. This should include the scope of the work to be completed outlining all specifications, requirements and any special considerations to be made. Ensure the total price for the project is detailed as well as payment procedures. Many carpenters will require a down payment for purchasing materials but do not require a complete advanced payment. Ensure you have some leverage for quality assurance by retaining a portion for acceptance of work. Check the terms of any warranties available. Even pieces that look nice may not be structurally sound or may need tweaking after in use for a period of time. Be sure the carpenter will be willing to make minor repairs within the scope of work if necessary.

A carpenter becomes more skilled with experience, so it is important to check references and see past projects. For minor, one off work, hiring on a budget is acceptable and you will likely get decent quality of work inexpensively. For more important or larger projects, however, look for a carpenter who has a track record of quality work and sound references. The slightly added expense in the beginning may be worth saving frustration and disappointment in the end. <bio>Gray Rollins is a featured writer for CarpentersHire.
Woodworking is responsible for lots of the houses, furniture and other wooden materials and articles used in homes and office surroundings. Simply defined, woodworking is the art or craft (of which it seems more like magic) of creating things out of wood. Woodworking is usually done by a carpenter but nowadays anyone can do it, it can be learned to a point in a very short period of time and is a very enjoyable pass time.

Woodworking is an art and while it may come easy for carpenters to build other people's construction requirements, most people have a hard time building even a simple four sided cabinet. Woodworking is an acquired skill and most carpenters/ <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/woodworkers" rel="tag">woodworkers learned the skill early on in life. Being able to create quality and decorative woodworks is really a gift which not all people are able to do very easily.

The art of woodworking used to be done manually by skilled carpenters and the likes. However, new technological advancements now allow for the discovery of new machines that have made woodworking less manual, more modern and more creative and efficient (plus a heck of a lot more accurate). Instead of shaping wood materials in man's creative but flaw full hands, the woodworkers now make use several machines to shape the wooden product they want to make.

A beginning woodworker should have the necessary tools and supplies even if he is just starting out in his craft. Woodworking power tools can be quite tempting but those who don't have the budget for such gadgets should stick with the hand woodworking tools.

The modernization of woodworking has lifted the woodworking art to a new level. Modern woodworking tools and equipment led to the mushrooming of do it yourself shops that offer wooden materials, project designs for specific woodwork and the corresponding tools and equipment that can be used by the aspiring woodworker.

Both aspiring and expert woodworkers should be aware of the important terminologies used in woodworking. One often-used term is milling, which is the use of a mill for grinding a board. Woodworkers should know that board-feet isn't a kind of furniture but it is a standard measurement when selling rough lumber in the United States. On the other hand, yield doesn't refer to harvest of agricultural products but it is the term given to denote the efficiency of milling unprocessed lumber. Waste is a common result when milling rough wood so when you are said to have accomplished a hundred percent yield, it means you have milled the rough lumber without producing any waste at all.

Woodworking is also synonymous with joints so you should know the different kinds of joints. A dovetail joint is a stable and sturdy joint for a woodworking project. Dovetail joints can be done with the use of a scroll saw or even by hand. What matters is you know the technique of creating dovetails and you are patient and skillful. Another type of joint is the mortise and tenon joint, a kind of woodworking joint popularly used in ships. It is also a sturdy joint and a project using this kind of joint will definitely be a showcase of your woodworking prowess.

There are several terms used in woodworking which every woodworker should know. If you aren't aware of them then you must do some research or talk to expert woodworkers as you may learn a lot from them.

When starting out, choose a workbench that fits the place where you do your woodworking projects. A workbench with a wood top would be ideal. The size of the workbench also depends on the type of woodworking projects you intend to do in the future. If it is just for crafting toys then a small bench would be ideal. <bio>Byron Branfield All Wood Working http://www.all-wood-working.com </bio>

Furniture designers are admired around the world by all people interested in furniture design.

The period of medieval carpenters was during the 1500 and 1800, and they usually worked only with woods. This was a period when wood was widely used for the construction purpose and carpenters were the most desired artisans. In the 15th century, they used improved tools like the present day carpenters. In those days, carpentry was an occupation that might be adopted through experience. There was no formal training or schools for the same. It required labor-intensive work. Some of the famous religious carpenters were Lord Vishwakarma, Jesus of Nazreth and Saint Joseph. The contemporary carpenters were Lewis Quaye, Mike Holmes, and Roy Underhill.

Cabinetmakers and furniture designers: The Cabinetmakers use woodworking skills to make cabinets, furniture and shelving. They used joints, bevels, chamfers, and shelving and dados system tools to create decorative edgings.

Famous English Furniture Designers and Makers:

Until the eighteenth century, the English furniture designers dawdled, whereas the European furniture designers were much ahead of them in ways of innovation and skill. The only exception to this was Grinling Gibbons, who was the master carver to Charles II or his fine carving and artistic work on the wood in 17th century. In 18th century during the rule of King William and Queen Mary, some Dutch artisans and designers took their businesses beyond the local areas such as Gerrit Jensen. In 1685 after the annulment of Edict of Nantes, various French Protestants like Daniel Marot contributed towards the outcome of the Queen Anne Furniture style.

In the Georgian era William Kent became famous. In the middle of the 18th century Thomas Chippendale and Thomas Johnson went onto become the famous designers for their peculiar designs. Thomas Chippendale was known for his smooth carved designs. Some of the furniture designers such as Robert Adam, George Hepplewhite, Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Hope contributed the golden age of English furniture designer. The Industrial Revolt saw some of the machine made furniture designers and artisan furniture designers until the advent of William Moris followed later by Ernet Gimson.

Classic Modern Furniture Designers of the 20th Century:

The 20th century furniture designers are very innovative and very creative. The new materials were used in the designing of the furniture such as chrome, PVC, plastic, and innovative use of the existing furniture materials, bending timber, laminating timber and steam bending timber into the designing of chairs, tables like never before. These designs of Classic furniture designers are still looked upon and are most preferred in homes and offices. The groundbreaker furniture designers of the 20th century were Charles and Ray Eames.

The 20th century period is the certainly the era of contemporary furniture designers. This is a bit more advanced to the periodic furniture designers. The styles of Art Nouveau and Art Deco came into application by the modern furniture designers. The historical consciousness and the sharing of information of ideas and technology have led to the expansion of the 20th century furniture designers in forms of style, design and the material used.<bio>Take a look at furniture design.
Racking is a term used to describe a certain type of storage. It is a storage system used to create a versatile and flexible way of keeping and displaying almost anything. Many different materials can be used to make the racking, from metal to plastic and from wood to fiberglass. Basically it can be made from anything that has the strength to support the weight of the items that are meant to be kept in or on it. As you would expect racking is available in many different sizes and the one that will be perfect for you depends on what exactly you are planning to use it for. Factors to consider when buying this kind or any other type of shelving include, where the unit will be- will it be inside or outside? How much money do you want to spend on your new racking? Setting a budget is a great way of avoiding being drawn into buying something you can't afford. And lastly how much space do you have available? This is important because you want to make sure you are making the most of any spare or unused floor space and also because you don't want to find once you have ordered your unit, that it won't fit in its allocated spot.

Although wooden racks tend to be hand crafted by woodworkers and skilled carpenters it is metal racking that has been most commercially successful. It has proved popular in the home, the garage, the office, the warehouse and even in the garden. One of the best benefits of racking is the way in which the unit can be changed by simply unscrewing or unbolting the shelves and moving them up, down, left or right. This is also part of the reason why racking is useful for so long, because when you want to store different things in it you can adjust the unit to suit the new items rather than having to buy a whole new piece of furniture. Many people also say that because a racking system keeps all the contents of the unit visible it is easier and less time consuming to find what you need in it once you have it in your home and are using it.

Racking retailers do exist on the high-street but they are not specialists and you will find that most shops stocking racking will in fact be DIY shops or hardware stores. This means that even if the staff are friendly and helpful they won't be experts in solving storage problems. Neither will the staff be knowledgeable about racking in particular. For expert advice you are better off buying from a racking specialist online. There are literally hundreds of websites selling storage on the internet and you can find them by using a search engine or DIY directory. Try to find a company that has lots of information available on the homepage because this will give you peace of mind that you are dealing with a reputable company.<bio>Big Dug is your one-stop-shop for all your shelving, racking and storage needs.</bio>

Are you a student planning to study in Australia? Are you studying in Australia with the hope of applying for Permanent Residency (PR) after you finish your course? If so, then you should read this article very carefully.

Before you commit to an enrollment offer from the sheer excitement of being accepted into an Australian University, take a moment to see if your course will allow you to apply for Permanent Residency afterwards. It is a common mistake that some students take by studying a course that does not lead to Australian Permanent Residency. Taking a little time before selecting your course can save a lot of stress and headaches a few years down the road.

Australia's General Skilled Migration programme provides students with visa options to remain in Australia Permanently. However, not all courses are recognized under the General Skilled Migration programme. Students must remember that just because their course is a registered course to meet the requirements for a 'Student Visa', it does not mean that their course is a recognized course for 'Skilled Migration'.

There are specific occupations that are recognized under Australia's Skilled Migration programme. These occupations are listed in the Form 1121i which can be obtained from the Australian Government (Immigration Department). The relevant occupations for Skilled Migration are titled as SOL (Skilled Occupation List) occupations in the form.

Now, that doesn't mean that you can just study any of the occupations on the SOL. If you want to maximize your chances of being eligible to apply for Australian Permanent Residency, you should try to be selective in what you study. Each occupation on the SOL is allocated a value of points. These points are supposed to be indicative of the level of demand the Australia job market has for a specific occupation. Depending on your career choices and life goals, you should try to aim for higher points if you can. Why?

Skilled visas are points tested visas. What this means is that in order to apply for a visa under the programme, you have to meet a points pass-mark. You can accumulate points based on your nominated occupation, age, English proficiency, work experience and other areas under the points system. You can find out more information for specific visas under the programme by reading the 'General Skilled Migration Booklet' #6. This is a MUST READ for all students who are serious about becoming an Australian Permanent Resident before deciding what or where to study in Australia.

You must remember though that laws change over time (such as the occupations on the SOL and the pass-mark) and although you cannot rely 100% on your self-assessed points, you can 'maximize' your chances of success by putting yourself in the best possible position to mitigate your circumstances. Taking control of your situation by following the steps outlined in this article will help you to do that.

Studying in Australia can be a rewarding experience. It is a significant investment, yes, but you can make sure that your investment is wisely placed to yield a return that will open more doors for your future. <bio>We are a Registered Migration Agency in Brisbane, Australia.
What is a CNC router? This machine is used to cut wood, plastic or metal and is generally used for routing out letters for signs, etc. Besides routing and signage, these machines can act as engraving machines, so you can get a lot of usage from one machine.

Many small fabricating shops, and even individuals are finding the accuracy and versatility of a CNC router very useful. As used equipment becomes available, more and more will be in demand since the price is lower for used equipment.

But they are still an expensive addition to the home shop, and plans to make your own have now become available in sizes as small as 15X15 to 50X60. The use of the machine would determine the size.

A CNC router allows a worker to create many projects that would be very time consuming and sometimes almost impossible to do otherwise. Cutting a complicated design into wood or even putting inlays into it are difficult for even the most skilled of carpenters, but with a CNC machine, these are done easily and accurately.

This makes CNC routers ideal for furniture making. The software for the machine allows you to design patterns or to do signs, once you know the software, and learning the software is not difficult.

The smaller machines, typically for the home shop worker, only require 120 voltage and can therefore be run on household current. These smaller table top machines only require 1 or 2 HP motors and are within the range of a hobbyist. A large machine can cost upwards of $20,000 while these smaller ones are about $7,000. Used machines are usually half the price of new ones, so for an investment of $3500, a home shop can have a very versatile machine. If someone were interested in making furniture for sale, it would pay for itself in no time.

A used CNC router therefore is quite a bargain. At half the cost of a new one, it is a very attractive option. Just make sure you shop around and determine the best machine for the type of machine work you will be doing. The used machines are older, and therefore not as fast as the newer machines. For the home shop this may not be as important an issue as price.

Used machines are available that have been rebuilt and these are a very good value as a rule. After a thorough inspection any worn or damaged parts of the machine are replaced and the result is a machine that is so good that many of the companies who do this are able to offer a warranty on the machine.

It is also important to have support available from the company. This will allow you to get installation instructions, and may also entitle you to free training on the software. If you are buying and using such a machine for the first time, this may be very important. You will want to make sure you are dealing with a company that can give you help and support in case you need it. A manual is important to have, but it may not answer all of your questions. <bio>Eric Slarkowski works at large for http://www.insidewoodworking.com , an online publication on cnc machines and wood router.
Your wedding day is often one that has been planned for many months; the memories of which will always stay with you. In the process of planning your wedding you have had to decide between a myriad of vendors who are hired to make your special day go smoothly and to help you infuse your wedding with personal style reflective of both of you. But when it comes to choosing vendors, none is ultimately more important than the photographer - simply because those photographs will tell the story of your wedding for years to come. When choosing the style of photography, you may want to consider fine art wedding photography =96 a unique way in which to capture your special day.

Fine art wedding photography takes the photographs taken at your wedding and turns them into works of art; a photographer skilled in such photography can manipulate the photographs in such a way that they will forever capture the spirit and style of your wedding day. Such photography is meant to be displayed throughout your home and passed on through the generations.

There are many photographers who are skilled in the more traditional styles of wedding photography. But, in this day and age, more and more photographers are exploring their more creative side and offering such creativity on to their clients. With the advent of the Internet, photographers have been able to showcase these skills; and clients are able to browse through the work of each photographer in an effort to find those photographers who are in line with the photography they envision for their wedding.

Once you find those photographers who are skilled in fine art wedding photography you should meet with them to determine if you like and trust them on a personal level. A photographer =96 more than any other vendor at your wedding =96 will be right along with you during the course of your wedding day. It is vitally important that you feel comfortable in their presence so that they are able to get the shots they need.

Fine art wedding photography can help you communicate the tone of your wedding for those who were not there and as memories for you to cherish for a lifetime. <bio>For easy to understand, in depth information about fine art wedding photography visit our ezGuide 2 http://weddingphotography.ezguide2.com </bio>

They are easy to assemble and save lots of spaces. Loft beds provide lots more uses than just a mere place to lie on.

Bed space-savers and multi-function bunkers; loft beds are best for utilizing space wisely in our rooms. They not only offer comfortable beds to lie on--loft beds also provide small storage spaces or cabinets or shelves underneath. And now we can make them ourselves following this guide.

Yeah, that's right, we said you can do it yourself and this home project is a perfect home addition for novice carpenters as well as skilled ones. So if you are a novie, don't be scared. Just have a plan and stick to it. Before you know it that loft bed will be ready for use.

1. First, we need the loft bed posts. Have the 4 posts measure exactly 4 by 4 inches by 8 feet.

2. We need to form a rectangular box shape of 40 by 78 inches with 5 and 1/2 inches height supported by these four posts. The rectangular box is formed by connecting 2 by 6 by 8 lumber pieces at their corners using 3-inch screws. Into this box we fit the plywood to form the lying on area of the loft bed.

3. Hold 2 posts parallel each other at a distance of 78 inches from outer edge to outer edge. Attach the posts to the 2 by 6 by 8 rectangular box by drilling holes on the post and at the box corners and inserting 4-inch and 3/8 inch bolts through them. Repeat the process with the other corners of the rectangular box and the 2 remaining posts. After this, we have the loft bed (rectangular box) connected to the post.

4. Make another loft bed (rectangular box) for the upper level. Connect this upper level bed in the same way as the first loft bed level. Then we make a wooden ladder with a riser height of 10 inches. Attach the ladder to the double loft bed with bolts, nuts, and washers at the foot and header, and also at the mid section, if possible. We may attach this ladder on any part of the loft bed.

5. Then, apply sanding on all the exposed surfaces of the loft bed before painting. Make sure that the upper level has enough head clearance with regards to the ceiling and do not make the loft bed size too narrow or wide. Check the dimensions of the loft bed to fit the available mattress size. And double check the safeness and sturdiness of the ladder material, construction, and attachment.

Always use machine bolts and nuts to attach the rectangular box to the posts. Make use of the space underneath for small storages or built-in cabinets or drawers. There are ready made units (wooden or metal) of these ready to be attached using studs.

Loft beds are the best option for space-saving bedroom ideas. They're easy to assemble and practical to use long term. Moreover, kids just love them - just make sure the kids will not fight about whoe gets which bunk.<bio>John Grant is a the author for a how to site where he is writing articles about how to build a loft bed.</bio>

Have a noisy enthusiastic lad? Do not hesitate to throw the best of all "Carpenter Party". He will definitely enjoy it.

When Friday came the boys were right on hand after school. Each boy was given a boy-size carpenter's apron with a supply of shingle nails in the pocket. Each apron was made of sturdy material and was about eighteen inches long and twelve inches wide. A crosspiece was stitched on the lower half of the apron and up through the center to form two pockets. Sturdy tape was sewed to the top for a halter and the same tape was used for the apron strings. Every boy has seen carpenters wear such aprons, and each was delighted to have one of his very own.

We showed the boys the feeding tray next door thinking they might like to follow its pattern. We told them they were to take home their finished trays. One practical lad immediately asked, "Where'll we get the lumber?" And we answered, "You'll find lumber and tools in the basement."

The boys tore through the house like a thundering herd and down into the basement. In no time at all each boy was choosing from the little lumberyard the boards with which he wanted to work. In a shorter time than it takes to tell, each boy was busy making a tray of his own design.

The saws hummed and the hammers pounded as the happy voices of the youngsters compared notes on their progress. Near the end of the afternoon we inquired if they were ready to eat. For the first time in our experience with boys at parties we were greeted with "Can't we have just a little more time? We aren't quite through."

At last all were ready to eat. To each one we handed a workman's box lunch. The boys were excited over this new version of a birthday party lunch. Each box contained peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches, a half pint bottle of milk and a straw, an apple, a piece of birthday cake and a sucker.

After lunch the trays were brought up for display. Not one of the young carpenters had copied the neighbor's tray but each had followed his own design. They were all very clever. One was simply a tray with an edge around it to prevent food from falling off. Another was a bird house with a tray porch while still another had a broad peaked roof. On leaving the party each guest was presented with a package of bird seed from the dime store. While the boys were collecting their trays, bird seed and carpenter's aprons to take home, one enthusiastic lad said, "This is the best party I've been to in three years." A little tousle-head replied, "What d'ya mean three years it's the most fun of them all." Then we knew that our carpenter workshop idea had made a hit.

If your noisy lad wants the gang in for a party don't hesitate to give the go-ahead signal. For a party that's fun, economical and easy to manage try the carpenter workshop idea it really works.

For an enthusiastic young boy the carpenter workshop party appears to be successful all time. In this party a child not only enjoys the company of his friends but also learning a lot too. It helps to develop in them a new sense of unity, enjoyment and important of friendship. <bio>Mitch Johnson is a regular writer for http://www.kids-games-n-crafts.com/.
Many people take on their own home repairs and end up miserable, hassled and regretting their decision a short time later. From costly mistakes to time consuming ordeals, these projects can make anybody's head spin. Finding ways to get around performing these tasks can save a lot of headaches and lift the burden off of the homeowner.

Home improvement can be a tricky game for those who are not well-versed or skilled in the craft. Fixing common home repairs is something most men see as their duty as husbands, fathers and as men in general. While these smaller home repairs are usually pretty achievable by just about anybody, completely larger home repairs and improvement projects is not something anybody can do after reading a How-To manual. Many home improvement projects require skill, experience and the know-how required to complete the job in an effective and efficient manner. Many amateur home repairs end up looking, well, amateur. Especially with large home repair projects, in which mistakes will be more noticeable and costly, homeowners who are not skilled handymen should seek outside help. This could be in the form of friends, relatives, neighbors, or in any number of forms, however, often times these people are not as skilled as they claim to be. For this reason, home improvement projects are best left to the professionals.

Many homeowners feel like they do not need to call a handyman or group of handymen to complete their projects for them, as they feel they are strong enough and capable enough of performing the task themselves. While this is sometimes the case, too often do homeowners who should defiantly call a contractor fail to do so and leave their home improvement projects in shambles. In fact, these homeowners usually end up calling a contractor to come clean up their mess for them anyways. Now, add the cost of the initial attempt by the homeowner, not to mention they time put in, with the cost of now hiring a contractor to probably do more work than they would have been required to do had they been called in the first place, and you end up with a higher cost than you ever would have expected. Avoiding these situations is a smart thing to do, as they are actually quite avoidable. By not kidding oneself on their home repair capability and skill and realizing they may be unfit to perform these larger home repair projects, homeowners can save themselves a lot of time and money by hiring somebody to do their home improvement projects for them.

While many people are very capable of performing these projects on their own, and there are of course quite a few of these people, there are still those who kid themselves when it comes to their skill and experience as capable handymen. Unfortunately for the homeowner and the home itself, these projects often end in heartbreak and disaster. Calling skilled, professional and experienced contractors to assist in home repairs is usually the wise thing to do.<bio>More information on home improvement projects, exterior home painting and College Works Painting in your area is just a click away.</bio>

In a recent report by the Work Foundation, entitled Towards a global labour market? Globalisation and the knowledge market, the issue of using skilled foreign workers to help plug skills gap in UK industries was explored. The report concluded that there was an identified need to encourage more migrant workers, from both inside and outside of the European Union, in order to secure the future growth of technology and knowledge intensive industries, in a global economy.

This report was supported by numerous industry experts and is certainly one way to plug the gap and solve the problem of the skills shortage. However, while encouraging skilled foreign workers to enter UK industries in need of skills is an option, isn't there something to be said for exploiting the existing capabilities of people here in the UK through providing both the financial and vocational support necessary to become 'skilled' first? But how, with so many restrictions placed on obtaining Government funding, can this become a realistic solution?

The career changer

The missing link is training and encouraging career changers to move from areas that aren't affected by a lack of skills, into areas that are. People, here in the UK, need to be encouraged and supported by the Government to retrain for a career in the sectors that are threatened by skills shortages, such as IT and engineering. The current system falls short as funding for Government training schemes is channeled through employers; so training for a new career whilst working is inaccessible for thousands of people unable to fund themselves.

Moving forward with funding

The recent announcement that 18- to 25-year-olds in some parts of England who have never passed A-levels or got good GCSEs will be given an online skills account with the equivalent of £7,000 in credits is a breakthrough in this area. However, whilst this is a step in the right direction there's still a long way to go with regards to providing funding for qualifications demanded by industry. For many young people, the prospect of learning towards qualifications that they have already failed or could not relate to at school or college is discouraging to say the least.

In my view, providing funding issues are addressed, it is schemes like this which have the potential to enable industry to plug the IT skills gap and for individuals to gain useful and recognised qualifications of their choice. And this should be our primary focus. Giving choice and financial incentive to train offers a positive outlook for individuals and should be a reassurance to industry that there is a solution to the IT skills crisis.

Going one step further would be to open up these funding options for career changers -- those who are in low-skilled and unfulfilling jobs who have the enthusiasm and ability to train for jobs in demand in industries such as IT. I recognise the need and value of bringing in highly skilled overseas workers to fulfil positions in the UK short term, but the Government's long term strategy to develop the workforce must be rooted in a culture of training, development and opportunity.<bio>Karl Parkinson, Chairman.
Those that are considering lasik; Reston, VA residents or not, should take a close look at the factors that play a role in selecting the right doctor for the procedure. What you need to know is that lasik that is performed by a skilled professional that has experience can be more successful and a bit less of a risk then when it is played by someone that's newer. For that reason, you should take the time to find a qualified professional lasik eye surgeon that will provide you with the highest quality eye care possible.

Experience is by far the most important thing to look for in a lasik eye surgeon in Reston or elsewhere. It is essential for a number of reasons specifically because they have more practice in identifying the need that you have in cornea improvement. The more skill and experience they have using the laser equipment for lasik the better the results can be as well.

It is also important to find out the worst case scenario. Talking with your surgeon about the potential problems that he or she sees for you is essential to realizing the benefits and risks that you have. This information should be brought to you outright, but if you aren't told about it from the start, ask. It is important in the decision making process.

If you are considering lasik, Reston, VA has many wonderful, highly skilled eye surgeons that can provide you with the highest quality care. The good news is that many have the experience necessary to provide excellent results. Even so, there are risks to every patient that can't be controlled with just the helping hand of an eye surgeon. Those that are looking forward to having lasik should take into consideration all risk and benefit potential before making their decision. <bio>You can read more of Frank's articles about lazer eye surgery at http://www.lasereyesurgeryplanet.com </bio>

Whenever you gather writers together they talk about writing. There are many different types of writers. Those who prefer to compose in long-hand or can only write on an old-fashioned manual typewriter. Those who write to music, demand complete silence, or create best surrounded by noise. You have the writers who must plan and outline before they can begin and those who find even talking about a project before it is drafted can stifle their creativity. But one of the most controversial divisions among writers is about whether writing is a skill, craft, or gift.

I admit that I like to stir the fire a bit because I can argue all three points and depending on how my own writing is going at the moment I may find that one viewpoint carries more weight for me personally.

I know as a teacher of writing that writing is a skill. I have taken people, young and old, who loathed writing and believed they would never be able to write -- and provided them with basic tips and tools to become good basic writers. I have taken good basic writers and given them the support and direction they've needed to become skilled writers. I've watched skilled writers with practice and determination become proficient writers. I have seen this in the classroom, at writing conferences, and in newsrooms. I have witnessed this transformation enough to know that writing is a skill that can be taught and a skill that can be learned.

I know as a writer, editor, and reader that writing is a craft. As the definition reads to craft is "to make or produce with care, skill, or ingenuity". A skilled writer can capture our interest and convey information, but a writer can also craft a story, poem, or essay that touches our emotions as well as our brains. For those who have gone beyond simply skilled to be craftsmen and craftswomen they can rely on their knowledge, experience, and instinct to create writing that does more than simply delivers -- it also sings.

I know as a writer and reader that writing is a gift. Some writers simply possess a special quality that allows them to step beyond and above the huddled masses. For some it is a special ability to shape words into images and ideas and for some it is a unique vision of this world (or another) that speaks to our souls in a way others cannot.

Are writers born or made? Many people argue that some gifted writers are born, but I am not convinced. Perhaps you could have some predisposition but I believe that writers are made. They are made in the rocking chair when Mother reads "Goodnight, Moon"; they are made under the cover with a flashlight when you simply must finish "The Hobbit" for the first time; they are made when you proudly pocket your first library card; they are made when you fill your first notebook; they are made when you submit your first poem, article or story for publication; they are made when you receive your first rejection; and they are made when you turn the computer on every day to write.

I believe some writers are supremely gifted but even so does that mean it was a gift given to them whole or was it a gift developed through years of reading, writing, talking, and thinking about words?

So, I believe, writing is all three -- a skill, a craft, and a gift. Some writers find their ability spans all three while others never progress past the level of skill. <bio>Deanna Mascle has been teaching and writing professionally for more than 20 years.
Fortunately, there are plenty of skilled and experienced Tai Chi teachers in America and there are a few Tai Chi masters here in the US as well but you may have to do a little homework to find one of them. The good news is that you don't have to study from a Tai Chi master to get benefits. A basically skilled teacher as described in this article will suffice. The bad news is that if you study from some one who does not have at least the basic Tai Chi skills, some of which are listed in this article, then you are learning something from someone who may do you more harm than good.

One of the things that I really hope I have been able to accomplish with this article is to educate people about how much more there is to Tai Chi than just the form (moves). The moves are an important beginning part of Tai Chi training and it is necessary to learn at least a few moves but the art and its legendary benefits particularly regarding health and healing are not possible without an instructor who really knows the art, way beyond the moves.

Also, the real Tai Chi instruction starts at the beginning of training and does not somehow magically begin after several years of time during which only the moves have been learned. The real Tai Chi instruction begins on the first day and the moves help a person to understand, work and apply Tai Chi. Only an authentic and at least basically skilled teacher can do this.

This article has presented only the most basic criteria required for a beginning Tai Chi instructor. A Tai Chi Master has much greater and more depth of knowledge than what is presented here. Anyone teaching just the moves with a little bit of philosophy thrown in is a Tai Chi beginner at best and at worst an outright fraud. Without the rest of the information particularly the internal aspects of the art Tai Chi is nothing more than fancy choreography which is fine, if that is what you are after, but if you want real Tai Chi then take the time to do a little reading, searching, visiting and question asking. The rewards of Tai Chi are worth way more than the little bit of time investment that I am recommending here. The people I really feel bad for are those who began taking Tai Chi classes without doing their homework and who have now spent years studying Tai Chi wondering when the real benefits that they were told about will happen for them. Much better to spend the time to visit and check out a few instructors now than to figure out several years to late that an instructor you assumed was legitimate (because they knew some choreography) simply did not have more than the external form movements and that you have wasted years of time trying to learn Tai Chi from someone who simply does not know it.

Good luck in your search and research. Please contact us and let us know if we can be of any help or guidance.

Sincerely,

Sigung/Sifu
Richard Clear<bio>Sigung Richard Clear has over 30 years of continuous study in Tai Chi and Chi Kung both in the U.S. and China. http://www.clearstaichi.com</bio>

If you want to remodel your home or fix some things up, some of the greatest resources you can get your hands on are home improvement how to books. While you might have to shell out a couple of hundred dollars to buy these books from a bookstore, the time and money you'll save in finding and hiring skilled laborers can make it more than worth the investment. Plumbers, for example, can charge up to $150 per hour, plus travel time to and from your house. Of course, this $150 per hour fee does not include the materials the plumber will need to repair or improve your plumbing. Electricians can charge just as much, and you also have to deal with inviting a relative stranger into your home. Also, if they make mistakes you might have to rehire somebody else to fix the problems.

Home improvement how to books help you to teach yourself the ins and outs of what skilled laborers and contractors already know. Depending on which books you choose to buy, some even come with diagrams that will show you (as well as provide written instructions) how to rewire things or work on pipes. If you have enough time to search for the right books and then spend the hours required to learn what they're trying to teach you, you can save a ton of money.

In addition to picking up some home improvement how to books, you might want to head over to your local home improvement warehouse store and pick the brains of the people who work there. Unlike people found in general stores, most of the time they know what they're talking about and can help you with any problems that you're having. From making suggestions to the right materials to buy to best suit your needs to suggesting which books to buy, they can be an awesome tool to use. <bio>Want more great home improvement how to tips?
Are you considering Lasik eye surgery? Then you want to select a Lasik eye center that offers the best of care. Lasik is so popular today that many Lasik eye centers have sprung up to meet the need, but when it comes to your health and vision, you understandably want to find a Lasik eye center that can give you the best treatment and care available.

In order to find a reputable Lasik eye center, you will need to do a little research. Check the credentials of the doctors who will be doing your procedure. Have they had enough experience? Are they well skilled?

Do not choose your Lasik surgeon based on price alone. A lower price may mean a less skilled eye surgeon, or one who does not have the same training and precision equipment as a more expensive Lasik eye center might have.

Also be wary of the discount Lasik eye center which relies heavily on radio and other advertising to get customers in the door. Know too that choosing the most expensive surgeon does not necessarily mean you will get the best one either.

When comparing prices from one Lasik eye center to another, be sure you are comparing similar packages. Most Lasik eye centers will quote a price which includes the surgery along with a vision correction package, and pre and post operative care. Some may quote the price of the surgery alone which makes it look like a better deal than it actually is after you add in the rest of the necessary expenses.

You will probably only have one opportunity for Lasik surgery so you want to make sure it is done right. That's why it is so important to seek referrals and recommendations from previous patients who underwent the surgery at the particular Lasik eye center you are considering.

Lasik eye surgery is not cheap and it most likely will not be covered by your insurance since it is an elective surgery. Therefore, you may wish to look for a Lasik eye center which will allow you to make payments on the procedure. Be sure to discuss the costs and payment options with your doctor. The Lasik eye center may have arrangements with a bank to provide financing, or they may do their own in house arrangement that will allow you to pay in installments. <bio>Anne Morris writes articles about surgery.
Believe it or not, your home repairs and home improvement projects can be positive experiences and can actually be a fun project for the homeowner. Many give home projects a negative stigma as pains, annoyances that are filled with problems. These projects do not have to be hassles and burdens for their owners, however, as help is available and, if one makes the effort, a home project can be a rewarding experience.

Exterior home painting is no different, as the process does not have to be a primarily negative experience. Many feel it is always a painful process for the homeowner, as one's home will be in an uproar and the atmosphere will be extremely chaotic. However, with some planning and consideration, a homeowner can avoid all of these unpleasantries during exterior home painting. Deciding how and when to perform each step is an important part of planning, as it will help to organize the project and add a sense that the homeowner knows what they are doing, boosting one's confidence. Confidence in home repairs and improvement projects can often be the difference between a successful project and an unsuccessful project. If one believes that they are a capable and skilled painter, then it will reflect on the final product. It will also make the entire process more enjoyable for the homeowner, as nobody likes doing something they feel they are no good at. Feeling as if they can do a good job will make the painter more confident in themselves and will make it an enjoyable process since everybody enjoys doing things that they are good at.

The alternative, of course, is to hire outside help in exterior home painting projects. This does not have to be a negative experience either, as many feel that hiring contractors to help in their home repairs can only be a hassle and a burden on themselves and their home. Hiring the right person and making sure you have a good relationship with the contractor can make things go so much more smoothly as opposed to having a poor relationship with a bad contractor. These contractors can cause more havoc than anything else. Avoiding this situation can help to ensure that the experience is a positive one and that things go smoothly. Having a contractor do your exterior home painting can take the stress off of the homeowner if the contractor is respectful and skilled and will leave your house looking its best. Contractors are usually very skilled and are determined to provide excellent service to their customers. Many understand that their clients may recommend their services to friends and family and this positive public exposure can only help their business. So, doing a good job is a top priority for many contractors.

Only the homeowner can decide whether or not hiring outside help or doing the project themselves is the correct decision. If a homeowner does research into exterior home painting and painting contractors, they will be able to make a more educated decision and increase the likelihood that the entire process will go smoothly and with as little bumps in the road as possible.<bio>More information on exterior home painting gigs for students, home improvement and College Works Painting in your area is just a click away.</bio>
