The best whale watching opportunities in the world can be found at the southern tip of Africa. This premier whale watching spot is possible due to the fact that two of the largest oceans in the world converge right at this very point.

Throughout the world, 78 species of dolphins and whales can be found. 37 of those species can be found right in the waters off South Africa. These whales can be divided into two categories; baleen whales and toothed whales. Baleen whales include the Humpbacks, Southern Right Whales and Bryde's Whales. Toothed whales include Sperm Whales, Beaked Whales, Killer Whales, dolphins and porpoises. The main difference between the two types of whales is the fact that while baleen whales strain food using a horny plate inside their mouths, toothed whales typically feed on squid and fish.

Whale watching along the Western Cape offers the opportunity to view whales as they participate in a variety of amazing behaviors including blowing, breaching and lobtailing. Blowing consists of whales creating a sound as they expel water through their blowhole. Breaching involves the whales leaping from the water in a back flip that arches and then falling back into thee water on their sides. When whales lobtail, they slap their tails on the water; creating a loud sound. This is believed to be a form of communication. Whales may also spy hob, which occurs when they lift their heads and bodies from the water in a vertical fashion in order to see what is happening above the water.

Throughout the year, residents and visitors can enjoy the opportunity to view a variety of different whales. Some of the best opportunities for whale watching begin in June and last through November. Beginning in May and lasting throughout December; the Humpbacks begin their migration to the area. In many cases, it is possible to catch site of the whales just a few feet from the shore. A bit further offshore, Bryde's whales can often be viewed all year around.

One of the best places from which to observe whales begins at Lamberts Bay and runs all the way down the coast to Cape Town. For the best chance to catch sight of the young whales, be sure to check out the old harbour near Hermanus where the whales come each year in order to calve. You can be certain you will not miss any opportunity to see the whales as an official Whale Cryer travels the coast in that area and informs passerby of whale sightings.

Still Bay also offers excellent whale viewing on the Garden Route. The placid waters here offer the perfect locale for the Southern Rights to gather and bear their calves. Wilderness also provides excellent whale viewing points as well, including Dolphin's point. Other great spots include Sedgefield, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. In fact, Plettenberg Bay offers a unique whale hotline and the opportunity to view whales as they come in quite close to the coast.<bio>We are your source for Cape Town Accommodation, Garden Route Accommodation, Knysna Accommodation, and more for your next vacation to the Western Cape.</bio>

It's no secret to anyone that the coast of San Diego is the ideal place to watch the annual migration of the gray whale. Looked upon as one of nature's ultimate spectacles; the migration of gray whales is nothing short of breathtaking. The coastline of San Diego is one of their migratory points as they travel from the waters of the Arctic to the warmer regions of the Baja (California), where females also give birth.

Every year, roughly 26,000 gray whales will make the long journey of 10,000+ miles from the Arctic to the Baja and back. If you look at this journey and compare it to any other mammal, you'll notice that the gray whale by far has the greatest amount of traveling at hand.

If you've never experienced whale watching, you'll be happy to know that anyone will find it memorable - young or old. Spotting a gray whale along the coastline is something that is truly a memorable moment, making you stop for a second and truly appreciate these awesome mammals.

If you ask the Birch Aquarium in San Diego, you'll find that gray whales are seen most frequently from December through March. While they travel in dozens normally, it's nothing to see pods of them (2 - 3) as they travel during migration. Throughout the coast of San Diego, you can easily spot these whales as they are somewhat slow swimmers.

During their swimming, they will normally dive to a depth of 100 feet or more for a few minutes, then surface and blow. Then, they will do a few shallow dives, before making that deep dive again. When watching whales, figuring out this pattern makes the success of watching them all the more fun and exciting.

While there are many common places to watch whales, nothing seems to compare to the excitement of watching them from aboard a cruise. There are many cruises that take place in San Diego, many of which offer unbeatable deals. From Handamp;M Landing to the Birch Aquarium, cruises are some of the best ways to see the beauty and tranquility of the traveling gray whales.

The beauty of the gray whales can also be seen from many points of the San Diego coast, including the Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma or the cliffs of Torrey Pines State Beach. Along these points, you can see the whales as they make their travels.

Whether it's a cruise or just watching from the coast, whale watching in San Diego is something you truly have to see to appreciate. You can take your kids, family, or even your friends. Whale watching can definately be exciting, all you have to do is plan your day and enjoy everything that the beauty of the gray whale will provide you with. <bio>Burt Cotton http://www.about-san-diego.com </bio>

While they once numbered in the millions, many whales are actually very close to extinction due to the whaling ships of the time who would go out and slaughter these animals for the blubber and other parts of the body that were used to make a good many products over the years. The eventual increase in value for whale ivory made the slaughter continue all the way through until the past few years where whaling ships have been banned from hunting anywhere in the world.

This was a grand day as the number of whales is starting to increase and today the people of the world are able to view these magnificent animals in their natural habitat and during the mating ritual. Unlike other sea bound creatures, whales do not have a natural fear of man and will readily display and play for the many people who come out to watch them.

Patagonia in South America is one of the best places on Earth to watch whales. The Southern Right whale uses this area as its primary mating ground, and they swim in by the thousands every year to mate and roll in the surf. This brings great delight to the locals and the tourists who flock to the area every year for the simple purpose of whale watching.

The mating ritual of the whales is impressive to say the least. Not only are they rolling around to attract other mates, but the males will perform spectacular jumps, lifting their enormous bodies out of the water and then crashing while displacing thousands of gallons of water at the same time. This will continue for many days as the couples begin to pair off. The boat trips that are offered in this area take you right into the middle of the action. The whales are familiar with the boats and seem to know what the people want to see. It is not uncommon to have several whales surround a boat and perform for the crowd that is happily looking on. This is the whole reason for the trip.

The Nuevo Gulf in South Patagonia is the best place to find whale watching in top condition. This area holds the Fauna Reserve which is a whale protected area where hunting and fishing is illegal. The area is home to some of the largest whales that can be found anywhere.

The open sea is a dangerous place for many of the whales in the world. Even though there is a world wide ban on whaling, some companies still operate pirate operations that will take hundreds of whales every year. The governments of the surrounding countries are working hard to toughen the laws and increase the penalty for whaling. One whale will make over one hundred thousand dollars worth of income for the capture on the black market. The fine for taking a whale is only twenty thousand. <bio>You will find more from this author at: http://www.pets-mag.com </bio>

The Hermanus Whale Festival, the only Enviro-Arts festival in South Africa is held annually in September to celebrate the return of the Southern Right Whales to the waters of Walker Bay, Hermanus which is the best land based whale watching destination in the world. This is a fantastic addition to a South African travel itinerary (especially for those visiting Cape Town) and is a popular attraction for families.

From early June until November, the whales come so close to the Hermanus shoreline (within 200 meters) that they can be viewed from the strategically positioned boutique hotels situated along the coastline. The town even employs a whale crier who walks through the town announcing the places where the whales have been spotted.

The Southern Right Whale is a baleen whale, one of the three species classified as the Right Whale belonging to the genus Eubalaena. There are around 7,500 Southern Right Whales spread throughout the southern part of the Southern Hemisphere.

There has been historical disagreement on whether to classify the populations of Eubalaena whales as one, two or three species. Morphological factors indicate that there were at least two species. One in the Northern Hemisphere and one in the Southern Ocean. No group of Right Whales has been known to swim through the warm equatorial waters to make contact with and breed with the other sub species. Recent studies have proved this to be correct.

Southern Right Whales are distinguished from other whales by the callosities on their heads, a broad back, absent dorsal fins and a long, arching mouth that begins above the eye. The body is dark grey or black with with some white patches on the belly. The length of the Right Back Whale is between 11-18 metres (36-59ft) and they can weigh up to 100 tonnes. The females have a gestational period of 1 year.

One behaviour that is unique to this whales is called 'sailing', where the whales use their elevated flukes to catch the wind. It is interpreted as a form of play and is seen on the coast of South Africa and Argentina. Another interesting behavioural pattern is the fidelity of a mother to its feeding and calving habitats. This instinct is very strong and is passed down to the calves.

The Southern Right Whales are listed as endangered species and have been protected since 1946 in the territorial waters of the countries where they breed.

Hermanus boasts some world class hotels. It is a cosmopolitan town that has retained some of its historical fishermans village heritage. The harbour has been restored and gives visitors a glimpse of times past. For those looking for an adrenalin filled activity, shark cage diving gives you the opportunity to get up close and personal with these magnificent sea predators.

A visit to Hermanus can easily be combined with a malaria free safari in the Eastern Cape. Some excellent family lodges/hotels include the Grootbos Nature Reserve, Long Lee Manor, the beautiful Cape Grace and the Waterfront Apartments.<bio>Jane Harmsen is a specialist in luxury safari travel to africa.</bio>

Whale watching in South Africa: Every year, these beautiful gentle giants congregate to our shores to mate and calve. South Africa has got to be one of the most incredible destinations in the world for watching marine mammals. In early June, southern right whales leave their Antarctic feeding ground to frolic in the warmer waters of the Western Cape coast. Here they mate, calve and generally hang out, occasionally flopping a tail up, or sticking their heads out of the water, much to the delight of onlookers. They are a true marvel to behold.

Whale watching in South Africa is done from June to November, although it's not uncommon for whales to be spotted outside this period. They pick some of the most beautiful stretches of our coast for their activities. Some of the best viewing spots include Lamberts Bay on the Cape West Coast, the Cape Peninsula, False Bay, Hermanus, Arniston, Mossel Bay, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. Some 37 species of whales and dolphins are found in South African waters, but the most common are the humpback whales and southern right whales (in spring), which are frequently encrusted with white barnacles. Humpback whales are similar in size to southern right whales (around 15m), and are often seen off the South African coast between July and November as they move to Mozambique to calve and breed, and to Antarctica, where they feed.

The absolute best way to enjoy whale watching in South Africa, is to go on a whale-watching boat trip. The boats are big, comfortable and moderately dry. Boarding is easy and people in wheelchairs can be accommodated. In some cases, the prices of these whale watching boat trips can be quite high, but the chance to get within metres of whales at water-level is simply unforgettable.

Hermanus is one of the finest places for South African whale watching. It is home of the Southern Right Whale which is named as such because it was considered to be the 'right' whale to catch. Whether it is the calm waters or their well-documented curiosity that brings them closer in, whales often come within a few meters of the shore. Hermanus as a town, is very much geared towards whale watching and many vantage points have been set up to accommodate the hundreds of people who flock here for the Hermanus Whale Festival every year in late September. The festival consists of nine days filled with music, theatre, sport and parties. The famous Whale Crier will be around to give everyone the latest whale watching news.

You could also visit one of the many coastal nature reserves to enjoy more South African whale watching. For example the De Hoop Nature Reserve near Bredasdorp which offers numerous spectacular trails and hikes varying in distance to get the most out of your whale watching experience.

Plettenberg Bay justly lays claim to the title of the South African Whale Watching Capital. The southern right whales can be seen for the whole season and when they are getting ready to leave in early November, the humpback whales arrive with their calves, and stay until the end of December or early January. A truly memorable sight! Plettenberg Bay is where the South African dolphin and whale watching industry is said to be the most organized. There are whale watching boat trips, dolphin-watching kayak trips and a number of aircraft from which you can check out the whales from the air. The town has made a vast effort to promote a responsible boat-based whale and dolphin watching program. Viewing, distances and time spent with each animal are strictly monitored so that there is minimal interference.

Which ever way you choose to watch these magnificent creatures, it is an absolute must. South African whale watching is truly an unforgettable experience! <bio>SA-Venues.com is a comprehensive travel guide for South Africa with essential travellers information including visas, safaris, hotels, accommodation, maps, attractions and more.
There are at least five things you can do on your holiday to La Palma that are exciting and fun. One of the things to do is to visit the theme park. There are four theme parks that you can visit, Los Tiles, C. Visitante El Paso, Jardin de los Aves and Maroparque. There is something that every park that will please everyone in the family. It may be landscapes, plants, birds or nature in itself. You could take a day, spend at each one of the parks, and still have time for other things. All the theme parks have so much to offer as well as restaurants, cafés and little shops.

Visiting the island can be even more exciting when you take a bus tour. This tour takes you around the island and shows you areas that you might not see if you are on your own. The guide is very friendly and makes the tour very interesting and adventurous. The nice thing about taking the bus tour is that you do not have to concentrate on driving. You can enjoy the scenery in the beautiful views of the island. The bus tours take their time and drive slow so you can see everything there is to be seen. This is perfect for families who want to get out and see the sights without renting a car.

Whale watching is another fascinating thing to do in La Palma. You can see the whales and the Dolphins while enjoying a nice quiet boat ride. Most of the boat rides take between two and four hours and you usually see more than enough dolphins and some whales in their natural habitat. The catamaran tours are very popular, so you should make sure to make reservations for the day that you want to go. It will have a fascinating time watch the Dolphins perform their funny antics and watching the whales jump out of the water and spray.

Another thing that seems to be popular on the island is the cigar factories. You can tour these factories and see how they make the cigars. It is actually very interesting to see the time and work that goes into one cigar. The one factory that fascinates everybody is the one where the cigars are rolled by hand. When you light up the cigar, you never think of the time that was spent to make that cigar just perfect. This factory considers the cigar a work of art and many people that smoke cigars will agree.

If you have a rental car, you might enjoy a drive along the old road. You will see chestnut trees and the Canary Pine. You will see black lava flow and the volcanic cone. When you get up closer to the top of the road, you will see many picnic areas to stop and rest. You can take along a picnic basket and enjoy a nice leisurely lunch while taking in the scenery. It is always a great time when you take your cheap holidays to La Palma.<bio>Want more than five tips on what to do on La-palma then we recommend you read the article 4 Things To Do On Your Holiday To La Palma. A cooling breeze softly massages your face where you sit, and you begin to close your eyes and drift away... the sound of the boat's engine begins to fade and finally stops. The boat, like you, is drifting over the waves and following the breeze. It's very peaceful and calm and after a stressful week at work you finally feel in harmony with the world.

Then something explodes... out of the water... and only a few feet from your nose! A 30-ton humpback... the length of a large house... it breaches... and in another second is gone. And you're left in disbelief and wonder. And it's just the start of your whale watching!

While whales are scattered throughout the world there's only a handful of accessible locations to view them in their natural environment. The coastal waters of New England and the west coast of North America are prime locations for whale watching. Hawaii and South Africa are also superb locations to spot whales, as are the ocean waters around New Zealand. So if a vacation or trip takes you to any of these areas make sure you book a cruise and take in the biggest show on earth.

Here's five things to remember to ensure you have an enjoyable whale watch.

PLAN YOUR WHALE WATCHING TRIP

It may seem obvious but book in advance for your trip to avoid long lines or even disappointment. Usually at least one week before the trip is recommended. Whale watching cruises can last anywhere from 3 hours to 41/2 hours, and the length depends on how long it takes to find the whales. If you're easily bored staring at the open ocean then take along a novel or your iPod, or something to entertain young children if they're part of your group. While most boats are equipped with a place to buy food and drink they don't usually mind you taking your own pack lunch or snacks to keep the costs down.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A WHALE WATCH CRUISE

I've two criteria when I choose a whale watch cruise company. How long have they been in business and does it have whale experts on staff? You can usually uncover this information by checking out their web site or calling them.

Most whale watch boats use sophisticated sonar and communications equipment to find the whales, but as I'm not an expert in equipment I look to see if a company has a history of organizing whale watch trips. Good experience is usually a sign they're doing something right and a safe bet. I also like to see at least one scientist or naturalist on the crew narrating the tour, as having a knowledgeable authority provides a better understanding of what you're seeing.

CHECK FOR A WHALE SIGHTING GUARANTEE

It happens occasionally you don't get to see a whale. These mammals are unpredictable, and while the captain will make every effort to uncover their location, some days they're nowhere to be found. So make sure you book on a cruise that offers a guarantee sighting or you get to cruise again for free. Offering a guarantee is another good sign of a confident and experienced whale watch company.

WHALE WATCHING IS DONE ON THE OPEN OCEAN.

Experienced whale watch cruise companies do not go out in rough seas, but the whale feeding grounds are normally miles from land in the open ocean. Even at the height of summer the open sea can still be choppy, and so if you suffer with motion sickness then take something about an hour before you board the cruise.

QUICK CHECK OF WHALE WATCHING EQUIPMENT.

Recommended things to bring on your whale watch are a camera and plenty of film or memory cards. Take or borrow a pair of binoculars, as whales many times surface yards from the boat, and having binoculars will provide close up views other passengers just won't get.

As for clothing, wear sneakers or something rubber-soled for good traction on a wet and slippery deck. And take sunscreen, sunglasses, and if it's got a tie strap - a hat. Because of the breeze on open water take a sweatshirt just in case of temperature drop, especially for a late afternoon trip. The boats will go out in the rain, so if you've got a poncho pack it as well. I put most of my whale watch necessities in a small fanny pack.

Whales are mesmerizing mammals that've traveled thousands of miles to feed in their playground coastal waters. They don't stay for long so go ahead and book your whale watch adventure and prepare for the biggest show on earth. <bio>For more details on Whale Watching in New England and to pick up your free vacation reports go to Cliff Calderwood's New England Vacation site at: http://www.new-england-vacations-guide.com/ </bio>

Mount Everest, the Grand Canyon, and Niagara Falls are all marvels of the natural world. But one of nature's greatest spectacles lies in one of the planet's most remote areas.

The majestic Na Pali Coast of Kauai is a spectacular wilderness area that the typical tourist will never see. Located along Kauai's remote North Shore, the Na Pali Coast is an awe-inspiring 6,175 acres; and although it has been converted into a state park, and remains as isolated from civilization as it was many centuries ago. Practically inaccessible to vehicular traffic, the Na Pali Coast is ideal for adventurous hikers and campers. However, to truly appreciate the unmitigated view of the famous and breathtaking cliffs, your best bet is to travel by helicopter or boat.

If fate allows you to cruise the 15-mile stretch of Na Pali Coastline, you will witness an awesome view of the stunning 4,000-foot cliffs. The area was named for these rugged cliffs, as andquot;paliandquot; is the Hawaiian word for andquot;cliffsandquot;. As you near the coastline, you will see these cliffs rising abruptly from the Pacific Ocean, occasionally giving way to gaps and revealing wide stretches of golden sand, deep jungle valleys and the mysterious sea caves between.

Winter is the best time to go on a cruise up and down the Na Pali Coast, as that is when the humpback whales frequent the Kauai waters. If you take a chartered ship, your captain will likely know exactly where these wonderful sea creatures can be seen. Truly fortunate sight-seekers will have the opportunity to take pictures and enjoy a spectacular show by these playful dirigibles of the deep as they perform with sea turtles, dolphins and other oceanic creatures.

Humpback whales can be measure 40 feet in length and can weigh up to 85,000 pounds. The fifth largest of the world's greatest whales, humpbacks are seen only in Hawaii over the winter months. Federal law protects these breathtaking creatures, so their population is rising. Plan a tour of the Na Pali Coast during humpback season, and you're sure to witness a fantastic spectacle of nature.

Na Pali boat tours are not necessarily restricted to the coastline. Both Hanakapiai and Kalalau Beach (named one of America's Top 40 Beaches by the National Geographic Traveler) are well-known Na Pali Coast State Park destinations. You can also visit the famous arch of Honopu, or the stunning fringing reefs of Nualolo and Milolii.

Depending on your itinerary and how adventurous you feel, the tour options you choose can be as wildly exciting as the Na Pali coastline itself. Most boat companies launch their charter tours from west side harbours. However, you can choose to sail from the quaint town of Hanalei if you choose to charter one of the smaller companies. Cruises to Ni'ihau are also available, providing you the opportunity to stop for a bit of snorkeling and scuba diving.

Tips to Successful Kauai Whale Watching:

* Choose a professional boat company, with a captain who knows where to find the whales and more importantly, respects the safety and environment of the whales

* Catamarans, cruise vessels, sailboats and rubber zodiac rafts are all good choices for whale watching

* Bring your camera so that you can preserve this incredible sight forever. You could be in for a wet ride, especially if you'll be riding in the bow area of the boat. Consider bringing waterproof, disposable cameras.

* Binoculars give you a closer observation of whale behavior, but they can be tricky to use if the water is rough. Your best bet for binoculars is to choose a pair with 8 x 40, or 7 x 50 dimensions.

* Keep a keen eye. You could see spinner dolphins, sea turtles, albatross and other sea birds and animals, in addition to humpback whales. Pay attention and see what you can spot in the air and in the water.

* Dress accordingly. Wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Remember, you'll be in a boat, so be prepared to get wet. Wear your beach clothes, and bring a towel. If you decide to bring extra clothes to change into, make sure you keep them in a waterproof bag.

* If you are prone to motion sickness, be sure to take homeopathic or non-prescription motion sickness prevention medication at least one hour before getting on a boat. Your trip will likely include the North Shore, where winter waves can swell to 10-30 feet, so the ride can get very bumpy at higher speeds. Medicated motion sickness treatments can make you drowsy and you don't want to miss a thing, so consider a non-medicinal alternative. Dry bread, crackers, ginger, papaya and avoiding alcohol can help reduce nausea.

Traveling is a great way to witness nature's most impressive sites firsthand, but the truly adventurous travelers go to where others only dream of. When planning your next journey, plan on cruising the Na Pali coastline with humpback whales. It will be an experience you'll never forget. <bio>Daniel Thomas contributes to several online magazines, such as http://bivec.com and http://kesaw.com </bio>

If you really want to get away from it all, think about a cruise to Antarctica.

Underneath the ice at the South Pole is a land mass that used to be much nearer the equator, where it was forested with a normal variety of animal life. AS the continent drifted south, at a rate of centimetres a century, the species living there evolved to cope with the changing climate.

Those animals still live there. The continent, or at least the Southern Ocean surrounding it are teeming with wildlife. This is the only place on Earth where wild animals have not learnt to be afraid of humans, meaning that you can get really close to these animals in their natural habitat.

This area may not be inhabited by many people but there is an enormous variety of wildlife, including various species of whales, seals and sea-lions. You will see Rockhopper penguins, Magellanic penguins, Adelie, Chinstrap, Gentoo and King penguins. For those interested in flying birds there are Albatross, Kelp Gulls and Terns.

Most people are interested in seeing Orca, killer whales, and this is certainly an impressive species, especially when seen in family groups.

An Antarctic cruise will enable you to see the Antarctic coastline and visit some of the islands of the Southern Ocean. Many of these islands have only a very small human population, others are uninhabited (by people anyway.) The silence away from the ship is simply stunning.

Visit the graves of some of the early Antarctic explorers such as Shackleton and venture amongst the islands and icebergs in a Rigid Inflatable Zodiac Boat (RIB).

That's just the activities OFF the ship. Of course you have the normal exciting cruise ship lifestyle on board, with all luxuries available. No ordinary cruise this, though. You will have so much to tell people when you return home from your out of the ordinary holiday to the Earth's least known continent at the end of the world. <bio>Ciara McGrath has four daughters and travels widely.
If you think that all you are going to see in Antarctica are snow and icebergs and more icebergs, you are wrong. There are many cruises that can take you around this great continent yet get to enjoy your travel in style and luxury and get to see its teeming wildlife. To enjoy more of Antarctica, make sure that your cruise goes through these famous tourist spots.

1) Falkland Island Sightseeing

As you are on your cruise, you can get to see the island's wildlife from the ship's deck.
How busy are we with our everyday life that we cannot "smell the flowers" anymore. Yes, to smell the flowers is just a metaphor, but it refers to a lot of things.

For example, we walk everyday on the same streets, near the same stores and people that we forget to watch them, we forget they are there. We do this automatically, we rarely stop to think. Just make a test and see for yourself: the big white house you walk by every day, what kind of windows does it have? What colors are they, what's the shape of it's roof top? Does it have a chimney or not? Mmmm, you don't know, do you?

The thing is that we get so absorbed by our little problems that we forget to stop and see the big picture. I think this really depends on the level of living of each country. For example people from a poor country think about their immediate needs, like food , having a home, having someone that takes care of them. On the other hand people from a highly developed country start thinking about the planet needs, they want to "Save the whales" and take care of the Ozone layer, the start seeing the big picture because they don't have pressing needs to attend to.

Why don't you do something for yourself from now on? A friend of mine told me that every week she takes half a day for herself. That day is for relaxations, for doing something different, that she doesn't during the week. Change your point of view, see from another perspective, try different new activities and enjoy yourself.

I promise that you will discover new sides of yourself that you never thought you had, and that you will begin to like them. Also even if it sounds strange and you say you'll never do something like going to a museum, or visiting an exposition, drawing in the park or going to dance courses, just give it a try and then judge for yourself.

Wake up, do something with your life, don't live in monotony and self sufficiency, there are so many things out there that you can try, that you'll never believe how you could have missed them. <bio>Mike Francis's home page - http://www.pegasusdirectory.com is a free portal where you can find everything you need ordered into categories. </bio>

Sometimes you just can't do everything you want during your vacation get away. What if you have a number of holiday destinations you would like to try out but a limited amount of time. There is a way to fit a cruise into part of this vacation

The key is booking a short holiday cruise. Sometimes a very, very short one-day cruise will let you have the experience without the major time expense.

There are a number of great options for these types of cruises, depending on the region you are visiting. You may even use the one-day cruise as part of your transport to your other holiday locations. Consider taking a cruise from New England to Florida. That is just one of many one-day cruises offered by Carnival cruise lines. Others will allow travel along the U.S. west coast, around the Hawaiian Islands, or even into Mexico.

On the other side of the world, there are day cruises offered through Sydney Harbor in Australia, voyages through the waterways of China, and even cruises that will take you through the Isles of Greece or the Mediterranean.

I guess the point here is that there are one or two day cruise options in all different climates, on all different continents and they will all give you a different way to view that region, while still having time in your holiday vacation to spend on land or visiting other areas.

In addition, if you are booking your cruise at a special time of year, there may be other cruise opportunities waiting. A number of the cruise lines offer special cruises around holidays. If you were thinking of traveling on the Fourth of July, near Thanksgiving Christmas or New Years, you should see what kind of extra special cruise offerings are available.

Before you book a one day cruise, it is important to know just because it says it is a one-day cruise, it could actually be a little longer. The term one-day really refers to the one night you will stay on the ship. So, if you leave early the first day, spend the night and spend much of the next day aboard, your trip will really be more like a two day stay.

Here is a list of very popular one-day cruises

Seward, Alaska =96 Cruises here will take you out to Fox Island where you can see wildlife usually only reserved for National Geographic videos, such as sea lions, sea otters, humpback whales, and puffins.

Valdez, Alaska =96 Here the one day cruises will take you though Prince William Sound to watch the whales, and get up close to the glaciers.

Monterey, California =96 Another offshore wildlife adventure sails for a day from this port, where there is a good amount of whale watching to be done as well as catching the antics of sea otters and seals.

San Diego, California =96 For a day of fresh air, and great scenery, this is the one-day sail to take. Sometimes it will also turn into a wildlife-watching trip. <bio>Concentrating on news and information about Elche, Clinton Maxwell wrote at large for http://www.alicante-spain.com .
While Puerto Vallarta is known for its charming architecture and majestic scenery, the city has always relied on Banderas Bay for survival. Resting in the middle of this sprawling bay off the Pacific Ocean, the city supported itself with the fishing industry long before the tourists arrived. Today, the vibrant culture of this unique destination still relies on the recreational possibilities of the bay's calm waters. From the beaches lining the bay to all the water sport activities possible off the coast, visitors to Puerto Vallarta shouldn't miss Banderas Bay.

In one way or another, all of the activities in Banderas Bay start with the beaches. The bay boasts 34 miles of coastline, 26 of which are beaches. From Puerto Vallarta in the middle of the bay to the northern surfing village of Sayulita, the beaches are typically wide and sandy =96 perfect for relaxing and water sports alike. South of the city, the beaches tend to be rockier and more secluded. However, these beaches represent the exotic ideal known to travelers through movies and magazines =96 where the mountains spill into the sea and jungles rest above the water.

Lining the bay in Puerto Vallarta, you will find the famous boardwalk =96 the Malecon. This waterfront walkway is lined with shops, restaurants and the city's unique sculpture collection. The Malecon is a popular destination for visitors of all ages, as families can enjoy the scenery and festival-like atmosphere while couples can shop the luxurious boutiques and hit some of Mexico's best nightclubs.

Out in Banderas Bay, one of the most popular family-friendly activities is a whale watching tour. Each year, families of humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of Banderas Bay from their Artic homes. Here, the whales breed and raise their young in the bay's protected waters. Conveniently, the whales visit the bay during the peak of the tourist season =96 December to March. There are plenty of tours available tailored to both whale watching and photography. Each tour company will offer unique options for travelers, from privately chartered sailboats to group tours perfect for families with young children. As sorting through the options for whale watching can be difficult, contact your resort for recommendations and reservations.

Not to be outdone by the humpback whale, dolphins also offer plenty of fun for tourists. In addition to boats that tour the bay allowing visitors to observe bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat, some organizations even offer trips to the Marietas Islands for scuba diving and snorkeling with these friendly mammals. Banderas Bay is also a hotspot for dolphin research, so you will be able to interact with gifted marine biologists able to answer all your questions about this vibrant ecosystem.

Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay are also great spots to start a scuba diving or snorkeling expedition. There are plenty of great reefs within the bay's calm waters that novice divers and families can enjoy. At the edges of the bay =96 where Banderas Bay meets the Pacific Ocean =96 experienced divers can test their skills in the waves. Regardless of where you dive, you will be able to spot numerous species of exotic fish, coral formations and underwater plant life. It is even possible to take scuba diving lessons and earn certification while in Puerto Vallarta.

From sailing and fishing to jet skiing and surfing, pretty much every water sport is possible in Banderas Bay. Even if you aren't the adventurous type, you can still relax on the bay's white sand beaches or on the deck of a boat cruising the calm waters. Just make sure that when you visit Puerto Vallarta, you don't miss a chance to enjoy the peaceful waters of Banderas Bay. <bio>Justin Burch writes articles about travel in Puerto Vallarta [ http://marriott.com/hotels/travel/pvrmx-casamagna-marriott-puerto-vallarta-= resort-and-spa/ ] for the Marriott Resorts. </bio>

There are many exciting adventures that you can enjoy while on a Maui vacation. Many individuals enjoy the white, warm sands of the beautiful blue beaches. Some people enjoy diving in and snorkeling in the sapphire crystal waters of the ocean that surrounds the picturesque beaches. One can enjoy experimenting with a wide assortment of exquisite wines and similar beverages that Maui has to offer. Many individuals may take pleasure in the various water activities, such as boating and surfing, in the wonderful world of Maui. If you are planning on taking a Maui vacation, this article is your one stop shop for Maui vacation ideas.

There are so many things to do and only so much time to fit it all in while you are visiting Maui. Yes Maui, the little piece of paradise that has been voted the "Best Pacific Island" by Conde Nast Traveler's readers for the last 16 years. Trying to fit it all in is enough to make your head spin, so hear are the top five picks of things you must do on your trip to "The Magic Isle."

A trip to Maui would not be complete with out a drive down the road to Hana. This is a road trip that is meant for those that like to take risks and live on the edge. This is a winding, 52 mile drive through amazingly breathtaking scenery that is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. This is a day long adventure that will let you see the rainforest and the exquisite flora and fauna that finds home there.

For those who enjoy an adventurous bicycle ride, a bike trip from Maui's highest peak into the depths of Haleakala Crater is a must. You will be taken to the peak, and then engage in a tour that is guided by a number of professionals down a paved road. This road offers just over twenty miles of beauty and history of Maui. If you find that the guided tour is not for you, you can choose to ride the road at a pace that is comfortable for you. This is a great opportunity to get some excellent photographs of the rare beauty of Maui. This makes a great Maui vacation idea for those who enjoy the great outdoors and a good workout.

Visit the Tedeschi Winery. Whether you are a wine enthusiast or not this is an experience that you simply must have. Take the scenic drive to Maui's "upcountry" and enjoy the historic vineyard that sits 2000 feet above sea level. Take a picnic lunch on the beautiful grounds of the vineyard then enjoy a free tour and sample the sinfully delicious pineapple wine. This is a really nice alternative to a day at the beach especially on the incredibly hot days that Maui can have. Two thousand feet above sea level brings the vineyard pleasant cooler temperatures.

If you would like to experience the adventure of visiting a volcano that is now extinct and being introduced to a variety of fish species and other animal life, snorkeling at Molokini is for you! Known for its unique underwater landscapes and crystal clear waters, Molokini is a favorite among Maui vacationers. You can also participate in various boat tours at this location. These tours will send you to the Maui away from Maui. You can get to the best snorkeling and scuba diving locations with these tours see sea turtles in their natural habitat and enjoy a one of a kind Pacific adventure. Your vacation to Maui would not be complete without visiting the beautiful underwater world that this paradise offers.

Visiting Maui in the winter, then you must watch the whales. Again the same boat tour companies that want to share the underwater world of Maui with you now want you to see Maui's best friends, the whales. From mid December to mid April the humpback whales make their annual migration. If you are fortunate enough to visit Maui during these months you absolutely must take a tour, the crews again wanting to share with you what Maui is all about, will take you out to show you as many humpbacks as they can find. The Maui Princess departs from Lahaina Harbor and guarantees whale sightings or you get another day trip for free. An extra bonus for this boat is it's underwater WhaleCam.

As you can see, there are numerous Maui vacation ideas that you can implement when visiting this Pacific paradise. Before arriving in Maui, it is important to outline all of the wonderful and exciting things that you want to do to ensure that you are able to succeed in your vacation endeavors. Then, once you have done all of the things that you outlined, you should immediately start planning your next Maui vacation to soak up some more of the marvel and beauty at this location. <bio>http://www.Hawaii-Top-Ten.com </bio>

If you're planning a vacation to California, you should really consider the San Diego area. There is multitude of activities and sights to see; you probably won't have enough time to do it all! To make your San Diego vacation is one to remember, be sure to start plenty ahead of time. It's possible to purchase tickets online for such attractions as Sea World and the San Diego Zoo, which are usually available at a discount when purchasing in advance. There is something for everyone, depending on what you have in mind. Torrey Pines State Park offers room to run with viewing of wild rare birds and a stately abundance of pine trees, which of course, gives the historic park its name.

With such a wide variety of activities, events, restaurants, and lodging, you can plan your trip on a budget or spend lavishly, whichever you prefer. Such historic sites as the Hotel del Coronado, offer upscale shopping, dining, and informative tours as well as fine overnight accommodations. Many festive occasions take place at this ocean side historic landmark; grand weddings being the most popular. There are many family friendly activities also available, such as bike rentals, swimming, and sand toys to rent. This grand old hotel is also rumored to be haunted, something for those who enjoy the paranormal!

The San Diego Zoo is one of the most popular attractions. It is considered to be America's best, and one of the most famous zoos also, with many of the rarest animals on display. According to Frommer's, a well respected travel publication, the zoo serves as residence to over 4,000 different creatures and is operated by the Zoological Society of San Diego. Plan on spending a whole day and then some meandering through the many paved walkways of the park, or you can take the popular tramway for a wonder aerial overview. There can sometimes be a wait for some of the zoos newest and most popular exhibits, but all well worth it! Bring your camera and take lots of pictures, the animals love the attention!

Another must see attraction is Sea World, home of Shamu and as of December, 2004, Baby Shamu, the killer whales. These spectacular creatures put on shows daily exhibiting their unique relationships and many talents. Watch out for the big splash if you're sitting in the front rows! Brrrrr! When the killer whales make their dives, they splash chilly 55 degree salt water on the closest fans; an exciting, wet experience!

Where ever you stay, or what attractions you see, you won't be disappointed by the over abundance of things to do or experience in San Diego. Fine dining on the wharf, or shopping in Gaslamp Quarter, the possibilities are endless.
For the traveler who wants to experience the Ultimate outdoor vacation, the Western Cape of South Africa offers activities and adventure like no other destination. There is plenty to do and see here, including majestic Table Top mountain, the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, hundreds of miles of beaches, whale watching, and diamond shopping. You'll need plenty of endurance to experience everything that the Western Cape of South Africa has to offer, including internationally ranked surfing and other extreme activities.

As you fly in, the first thing you will notice are the endless beaches. Remember, there are two oceans on the Western Cape of South Africa and they both have beaches; so the surf and sand go on forever. The Indian Ocean is warmer than the Atlantic, so it is more popular for sunbathing. The real attraction for surfers however, is Haut Bay, where the surf surges against the jagged rocks and international surfing contests are frequently held. Sunbathers will prefer the beaches of the Western Cape 'Riviera', a place where the rich like to see and be seen.

Something else to be seen on the Western cape of South Africa are the whales. Many whales, including the Humpback Whale, come to the Western Cape to mate and calve during the summer months.

Hiking enthusiasts love Table Mountain, the tallest peak in the Western Cape of South Africa. It rises 3,300 feet over the City Bowl of Cape Town, and is so tall that the summit is often surrounded by clouds that are referred to as the 'table cloth.' By following the trails that lead to the summit, hikers can enjoy views of Cape Town as well as the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. For those who want to ride, there is also a cable car that goes to the top.

The Garden Route affords weary travelers some easier walking along the Atlantic Ocean. The Garden Route is a series of trails that winds around the coastline on the Western Cape of South Africa. Here, visitors can enjoy flower gardens, native forests, and breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The Garden Route also runs parallel to the famous Route 62, which is a beautiful drive along the coast as well.

Another popular tour in the Western Cape of South Africa is the Wine Route. The famous Constantia Wine Route is thriving these days, thanks to a boom in the wine production on the Western Cape. This is a great place to get a close-up look at wine production and sample the wine and cuisine of this picturesque valley.

Not to be overlooked, the city of Cape Town has some of the best shopping in the Western Cape of South Africa. Shoppers usually head straight for the 'Diamond Works', one of the best places in the world to buy diamond jewelry. Shopping abounds all throughout Cape Town, which also has the largest collection of Cape Dutch style buildings in the world.

The Western Cape of South Africa isn't as hard to get to as it might seem. The Cape Town Airport is near to all of the attractions and has direct international flights. The Western Cape of South Africa is an amazing place to visit, especially if you love incredible outdoor adventures.<bio>We are your source for Cape Town Accommodation, Cape Town Hotels, and more for your next vacation to the Western Cape.</bio>

Donsol used to be a sleepy coastal town in Sorsogon--a province in the southernmost tip of Luzon. Nobody knows Donsol except for, of course, its local inhabitants until a few years ago when tourists from all over the world began to flock this remote place to get a look-see at the largest fish on earth: the whale shark.

Before, fishermen in Donsol were ignorant of the ecological (and tourist) value of whale sharks. They used to hunt, slaughter and sell the poor gentle sea creatures to Japanese traders. Local folks call them "butanding" or "big fish" in the vernacular. Early sightings of the butandings were reported in the Visayan seas in Bohol further south. It was said that massive slaughtering caused their migration to Donsol waters.

Although, according to stories, the first butanding that was netted out in the area was also butchered. A marine biologist witnessed it and instantly recognized the fish as a rare marine specie. The biologist immediately reported the incident to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), an international organization promoting the preservation of the wildlife.

WWF wasted no time and launched an education campaign about the giant creature. After coordinating with the Department of Tourism, whale-watching soon became a tourist activity that allowed extra income for the people of Donsol.

Whale sharks can grow up to 50 feet in length. It has a rather wide mouth with hundreds of pointed teeth. It usually comes in grey or greenish brown color with white or yellow spots all over its body.

It earned the label gentle giant of the sea because of its harmless nature, considering it is of the shark family. It has nothing in common with whales except for its size, thus the name. Divers can swim and interact with them and are only known to sink deeper into the ocean when it gets upset. There has been no known attack on humans of whale sharks.

Scientists are still baffled with the large migration of whale sharks in Donsol. These fishes are known to prefer the cold waters, not the tropical seas that we have. One explanation would be the flourishing of planktons in the area. Planktons are organisms that fill the diet of the whale sharks. It is also hard to record the number of whale sharks that now thrive in Donsol. But early studies show that whale sharks can travel 14,000 miles in 40 months and is capable of breeding in different sea environments.

Whale sharks swim on the surface of the water especially during the morning and early afternoon. It opens its mouth rhythmically when feeding on the planktons and visitors may be treated to this wondrous sight if they spot the fish at the perfect time. But don't expect them to jump up and down the water like the whales or dolphins. That's actually another beauty of the whale shark experience because this makes it perfectly east and safe to get near them. <bio>John Grant has been living in the Philippines for 5 years and has travelled the country extensively.
