<content:encoded><![CDATA[What happened to the time? When we are busy in our day-to-day lives, it sometimes seems that whole seasons pass in a blink. And the goals we have...well, they can easily slip by in that blur too. You want to WAKE UP: to get control of your time and meet your goals. But how? <br /><br /> In coaching we sometimes talk about our lives being in process. That is, our lives are constantly flowing forward over and around the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/highs+and+lows" rel="tag">highs and lows</a> of our everyday experience, like a river. As humans we often try to minimize those <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ups+and+downs" rel="tag">ups and downs</a>: We plan for the future, we dwell on the past, and thus avoid experiencing the emotion at this present moment. As a result we dampen our aliveness and sort of zone out. No wonder we suddenly "wake up" to realize minutes, even days or weeks, have passed us by! <br /><br /> Have you ever had the experience of driving a car only to find yourself suddenly at your destination? Where have you been? Not present, that's for sure! But really, what does it mean to be present in your day-to-day life? <br /><br /> It's quite challenging to focus all your attention on this moment. Try it: As you are reading these words, slow down. Experience the action of reading one word at a time. What sounds do you hear in the room around you? How comfortable are you? How are you breathing? Recognize that you are alive. Right now. In this moment. <br /><br /> What was that like for you? <br /><br /> Here's another experiment. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/go+ahead+and+laugh" rel="tag">Go ahead and laugh</a> - - but try this anyway. It may give you a whole new way to be in the moment: <br /><br /> As your go through your day, ask yourself: Where's my butt? On a chair? Against a wall? Walking past the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/consignment+shop" rel="tag">consignment shop</a> on Main Street? Crazy as it sounds; it is very difficult not to be present when you're trying to figure out where your <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/rump" rel="tag">rump</a> is! <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/welcome+to+the+here+and+now" rel="tag">Welcome to the here and now</a> :-) <br /><br /> OK! Now you've tried rump-awareness and have probably heard all kinds of other advice for becoming present in the moment -- breathing, mindfulness, meditation, and so forth. Now broaden the concept: how can you stay present and focused for a project or goal in your life? Select a theme. <br /><br /> Here's how it works: As an example, my theme for my business this year is "fun and inspired action." <br /><br /> This theme serves a filter. Each month, I review my business goals through the lens of my theme and prioritize those that will be the most fun and give me and my clients the most inspiration. <br /><br /> Brainstorming projects to undertake, I look for those that best match my theme. My theme gives me a sense of exploration when choosing new opportunities: last week alone, I was on a radio show and was a guest lecturer at the University of Maryland. These are experiences I wouldn't have imagined for myself in the past, but they came my way, fit the criteria and were so FUN! <br /><br /> A client of mine has a theme for the month in regard to his job search: Action! Driven by action he's got some aggressive goals for landing job interviews. In every step he takes he asks himself, "does this forward my action toward my goals?" You should see the guy -- he's on fire! <br /><br /> What is YOUR theme? It's time for you to wake up and be on fire too! <bio>Laura Koehne, founder of THRIVE Against the Grain, coaches you to take the road less traveled with complete confidence. <content:encoded><![CDATA[ Dear Mr. Katz: <br /><br /> I have a 4 month old <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/female+pup" rel="tag">female pup</a>, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/amstaff" rel="tag">AmStaff</a>/Boxer (we think - she was a rescue). She responds well to all training, EXCEPT for walking and heeling. <br /><br /> We've practiced the loose-leash "turning on a dime" technique described in your book and audio tape at length, but she refuses to cooperate. <br /><br /> [See <a href="<a href="http://www.<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/dog" rel="tag">dog</a>problems.com">http://www.dogproblems.com</a>/secretsbook.htm"><a href="http://www.dogproblems.com">http://www.dogproblems.com</a>/secretsbook.htm</a>] <br /><br /> It's not a matter of distraction - when I attempt to train her in this style, she pulls back with all her strength. When the loose leash is snapped, she sits, paws braced, or lays down on her back. These responses are immediate. <br /><br /> I've tried instantly righting her, and continuing the training, but she responds as above just as quickly. This can go on indefinitely. I've tried correcting her with a low "No," and praising her if she responds correctly for even an instant. I've tried using treats to get her to at least walk with me briefly...... all to no success. <br /><br /> What else should I try? <br /><br /> Thanks, Geoff <br /><br /> Dear Geoff, <br /><br /> It's a good question you've asked. <br /><br /> First, you DO NOT want to work the dog around distractions at this point in the game. <br /><br /> Second, you should not be telling the dog, "No!" and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/jerking" rel="tag">jerking</a> the leash for this behavior. Instead, you need to simply glue the leash to your belt and keep walking. <br /><br /> Now here's where your problem will arise: You've already <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/inadvertently" rel="tag">inadvertently</a> taught your dog that if she kicks and screams long enough (or rolls on her back and throws a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/tantrum" rel="tag">tantrum</a>)... that eventually you will stop walking and come to see what's wrong. <br /><br /> The only problem is... NOTHING IS WRONG! <br /><br /> It's like if I take you in a helicopter and drop you off in the middle of the desert and tell you that I'm going to leave you there, but will eventually come back and pick you up in half an hour (or 2 hours, or a whole day!!!) ... you will simply sit there and not attempt to remedy your situation, as you know that I'm coming back to pick you up. Eventually, this situation will end and I'll come back and your problems will be over. <br /><br /> However, if I instead drop you off in the middle of the desert and tell you that I'm never coming back... then all of the sudden you're in a position where you MUST START TRYING DIFFERENT THINGS TO BETTER YOUR SITUATION. <br /><br /> Maybe you start to look for some twigs you can start a smoke fire with, to draw the attention of an airplane overhead. <br /><br /> Or perhaps you climb on top of a rock, to look for a nearby highway so that you can hitch hike to a nearby pay phone. <br /><br /> But the point is... you start actively looking for a solution because you IMMEDIATELY REALIZE THAT YOUR SITUATION WILL NOT SIMPLY END BY ITSELF. <br /><br /> And this is the same thing you need to teach your dog. And it's a lesson that will extend beyond this one exercise. Your dog must learn that just because she does not want to do something DOES NOT mean that you will give in and let her not do the exercise. <br /><br /> BECAUSE THIS CREATES A SPOILED DOG. <br /><br /> So... what should you do? The answer is really quite simple. Just keep walking. No matter how much the dog kicks and screams and throws a tantrum, remember: You're not asking her to do anything she cannot do if she chooses. We're asking her to SIMPLY WALK WITH YOU. <br /><br /> Now, in light of everything you've already taught her (remember, every action you do teaches your dog something)... you may have to keep walking a quarter of a mile before she finally realizes that you're not stopping and that it's easier to walk alongside you than it is to be dragged on her rump. <br /><br /> Trust me... it won't be a pretty scene for your neighbors to look out their window and see you dragging your dog on her rump down the street. <br /><br /> But when you will be able to take that same dog out for a casual stroll later that evening, your neighbors will wonder if you didn't trade your dog in for a different one and will gasp at how well she walks alongside you on the leash. <br /><br /> That's all for now, folks! <content:encoded><![CDATA[The <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/havanese" rel="tag">Havanese</a> is a small sturdy dog. He is slightly longer than tall. The Havanese's coat is long, silky and wavy. He has a plumed tail that he carries loosely curled over his rump. <br /><br /> Size and Proportion <br /><br /> The Havanese stands from a range of 8 to 11 inches tall. The ideal height is between 9 and 10 inches measured at the withers, and slightly less than the length from point of shoulder to point of buttocks. His outline is somewhat of a rectangle rather than square. The Havanese should never appear fragile. A coarse dog with excessive bone is contrary to type and therefore undesirable according to the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/akc" rel="tag">AKC</a> standard. The minimum height stated here does not apply to males and females under twelve months of age. <br /><br /> Head <br /><br /> The expression of a Havanese should be soft, mischievous and intelligent. The eyes are dark brown, large, almond-shaped, and set widely apart. A chocolate colored Havanese may have somewhat lighter eyes. Pigment on eye rims is solid black for all colors except for the chocolate Havanese. The chocolate colored Havanese will have <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/dark+chocolate+brown" rel="tag">dark chocolate brown</a> pigment. No other dilution of pigment is acceptable. <br /><br /> The ears are of medium length. The leather when extended reaches halfway to the nose. The ears are set high on the skull, slight above the endpoint of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/zygomatic+arch" rel="tag">zygomatic arch</a> and are broad at the base. They show a distinct fold. When the Havanese is alert the ears lift at the base. This lift will cause an unbroken shallow arc from the outer edge of each ear across the backskull. <br /><br /> The backskull is broad and slightly rounded. The stop is moderate. The length of the muzzle of a Havanese is slightly less than the length of the backskull measured from stop to point of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/occiput" rel="tag">occiput</a> and the planes are level. <br /><br /> The nose is broad and square. The pigment on the nose and lips is solid black for all colors except the Chocolate Havanese. The Chocolate Havanese will have dark chocolate <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/brown+pigment" rel="tag">brown pigment</a>. No other <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/color+pigment" rel="tag">color pigment</a> is acceptable. <br /><br /> A scissors bite is ideal. Full complement of incisors is preferred. <br /><br /> Neck, Topline and Body <br /><br /> The neck is of moderate length and in balance with the height and length of the Havanese. The neck carries a slight arch and blends smoothly into the shoulders. The topline of a Havanese is straight but not level. The body measured from point of shoulder to point of buttocks is slightly longer than the height at the withers. The chest is deep, rather broad in front and reaches the elbow. The tail is high-set and plumed with long, silky hair. The tail arcs forward over the back, neither flat on the back nor tightly curled. When the Havanese moves the tail is carried loosely curled over the rump. The tail may not be docked. <br /><br /> Forequarters <br /><br /> Shoulder layback is moderate. The upper arm is relatively short. The elbows turn neither in nor out and are tight to the body. Forelegs are well-boned and straight when viewed from any angle. Dewclaws may be removed. The feet are round with well arched toes and turn neither in nor out. Pads and nails may be black, white, pink or a combination of these colors. Chocolate Havanese may also have brown pads and nails. <br /><br /> Hindquarters <br /><br /> The hind legs are well-boned and muscular through the thigh with moderate angulation. In normal stance, the hind legs are parallel to each other from hock to heel and all the joints are in line when viewed from the rear. The rump is slightly higher than the withers and contributes to the Havanese's unique, springy gait. The hind feet fall slightly behind a perpendicular line from the point of the buttock when viewed from the side. <br /><br /> Coat <br /><br /> The coat of a Havanese is double. He does not have a woolly undercoat usually associated with double coats. The coat is soft and light in texture throughout. The outer coat carries slightly more weight. The long hair is abundant and ideally is wavy. The ideal coat of a Havanese will not be so profuse nor overly long as to obscure the natural lines of the dog. A disqualification would be a coarse, wiry coat. <br /><br /> Color <br /><br /> All colors are acceptable. The skin may be freckled or parti-colored. <br /><br /> Gait <br /><br /> The Havanese has a lively, elegant gait. The characteristic "spring" in his gait is caused by the strong rear drive combined with the flashy front action caused by the short upper arm. The front legs reach forward freely. There is good extension in the rear and no tendency toward sickle hocks. Head is typically held high even on movement. <br /><br /> Temperament <br /><br /> The Havanese is playful, alert and intelligent with a sweet disposition. He is easily trained. <bio>Author: Connie Limon. <content:encoded><![CDATA[Use this guide to help you select and prepare your baked ham for that special meal. With this guide, you will be able to identify and understand the various types of hams and select the best ham for your family. We'll even tell you how to bake your ham. <br /><br /> This guide is organized in a question-and-answer format for easy reference. <br /><br /> What are the different types of hams that I should consider? <br /><br /> A ham is cured pork, specifically the entire back leg of a hog. But ham is very different than uncured pork. It's the curing process that changes the flavor and texture of the meat. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cured+hams" rel="tag">Cured hams</a> can be either cured in <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/brine" rel="tag">brine</a>--the most common--or dry cured. There are four major types of brine-cured hams: fresh, cured, canned but not <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/pasteurized" rel="tag">pasteurized</a>, and canned and pasteurized. With the exception of some dry-cured hams, any ham that is not pasteurized must be refrigerated. <br /><br /> Dry cured hams are usually more expensive, are quite salty, have a unique flavor, and are not commonly used as dinner hams. A country ham is a dry cured ham that is usually heavily salted and is usually soaked to remove some of the salt before it is cooked and eaten. Dry cured hams are not generally found in grocery stores. Dry cured hams include <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/prosciutto" rel="tag">prosciutto</a>, serrano, and like types. <br /><br /> Hams may be whole or half. A half will be labeled either as a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/rump" rel="tag">rump</a> half or a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/shank" rel="tag">shank</a> half. In some cases, a half ham has had a cut removed and is therefore a rump portion or a shank portion. A shank portion will have more connective tissue and will be less meaty. <br /><br /> What about water content? <br /><br /> Except for dry cured hams, hams absorb moisture from the curing brine either by soaking or injection. In smoking and drying, that moisture may be removed. The government dictates that the moisture level must be indicated by the labeling. The driest product labeled "Ham" will not exceed ten percent added water. A product labeled "Ham with <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/natural+juices" rel="tag">Natural Juices</a>" is the next driest, then "Ham Water Added" and finally a "Ham and Water Product" which has as much as 35% water. <br /><br /> Should I be concerned about nitrites? <br /><br /> The brine used for curing is a combination of water, sugar, salt, and sodium nitrite. After several days of curing, the ham is washed free of brine, cooked, and is sometimes smoked. According to government allowances, the finished product cannot contain more than 200 parts per million of nitrite. All processors are regularly inspected by the USDA to assure compliance. <br /><br /> The nitrites used are approved by the FDA as safe in the concentrations allowed. <br /><br /> How do I select a quality ham? <br /><br /> Hams may be one of those items where you usually get what you pay for. Mass produced, inexpensive hams may be processed in as little as twelve hours. More expensive hams may not be ready for market with less than two weeks of processing. Additionally, the best hams come from selected pigs that have been fed high protein diets prior to slaughter. <br /><br /> Processors may vary the amount of salt or sugar in a ham to meet company specifications. Additionally, the smoking process may vary. When you find a ham that has the flavor that you like, stick with it. <br /><br /> Color and appearance are important considerations in selecting a ham. <br /><br /> Select a fresh ham that is a bright grayish-pink. Those fresh hams that have a pale, soft, watery appearance are less desirable. A fresh ham that has a greenish cast may indicate bacterial growth and should be avoided. <br /><br /> Select a cured ham that has a bright pink color. A lighter-colored pink or a non-uniform coloring may be the result of improper curing or exposure to store lights. Again, a greenish cast may reflect the presence of bacterial growth. Avoid those hams that have a multi-colored appearance. It may suggest the presence of bacteria. <br /><br /> Avoid those hams that have excessive marbling. These may have a greasy taste. <br /><br /> The general rule is to plan on six to eight ounces of boneless ham per serving and eight to twelve ounces of bone-in ham per serving. <br /><br /> It is the opinion of some that bone-in hams taste better. <br /><br /> How do I prepare my ham? <br /><br /> Most hams, including many canned hams, require refrigeration before baking. Unless it is pasteurized and states that refrigeration is not required, keep your ham in the refrigerator. <br /><br /> As with all meat products, make certain that your ham is properly baked--though a ham marked "fully cooked" does not need to be cooked again. A meat thermometer is essential. Measure the baked temperature of the meat in the thickest portion of the ham and in at least two spots to make sure that the thermometer is not inserted into a pocket of hotter fat. Make certain also that the thermometer is not placed against the bone. <br /><br /> To be safe, a fresh ham should be baked to 170 degrees and a cured uncooked ham baked to 160 degrees--many bacteria can survive to temperatures of 140 degrees. If you are warming a fully cooked ham, heat it to 140 degrees. <br /><br /> If you are purchasing a bone-in ham, be certain of your carving skills. Carve at right angles to the bone. Let the baked ham set for five minutes before beginning to carve. <br /><br /> Sources: University of Minnesota, <a href="http://About.com" >http://About.com</a>, House of Hams <br /><br /> Copyright 2003-2007, The Prepared Pantry (<a href="http://www.prepraredpantry.com" >http://www.prepraredpantry.com</a> ). <content:encoded><![CDATA[Wool Preparation Instructions <br /><br /> Select a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fleece" rel="tag">fleece</a> with a staple (fiber) length of at least two inches. Shorter fleeces can be spun without difficulty, but if you intend on using your <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/handspun+yarn" rel="tag">handspun yarn</a> for warp in weaving, the longer <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/staple+fiber" rel="tag">staple fiber</a>s will result in a stronger yarn. <br /><br /> Lay your fleece out on a table, cut side up. If the fleece is bundled, try to unroll it to maintain the wool as it came off the back of the sheep. Look over the surface of the fleece and remove any short clumps of wool known as second cuts. Look over the perimeter of the fleece and remove any <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/dung" rel="tag">dung</a> tags (poop), really awful wool, leg wool which looks like felted fluff, and any thing that looks too matted to spin. Some people save this wool (minus the dung) for felting. <br /><br /> Flip the fleece over, scanning the surface of the wool for any visible hay, burrs, matted or felted wool Now sort the fleece by color, wool type, length, etc. Label bags in that manner, example being 'Romney, sheep number 23, grey back wool', or 'romney, #44, long white rump'. Anything that will help you to identify where the fiber came from. Don't trust your memory. <br /><br /> Take a bundle of wool, whatever amount will fit in your washing container, maybe a pound. Fill a bucket with the hottest water that comes from your tap. Add an eighth of a cup of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/dawn+dishwashing+liquid" rel="tag">Dawn dishwashing liquid</a>, or any liquid that has a grease cutter in it. Submerge the wool into the bucket without agitating it in any way, and allow to sit there undisturbed until the water begins to cool, about an hour. <br /><br /> Carefully lift the wool out of the water. Gently squeeze the dirty water out of the wool. Fill a container with the hottest water you have out of the tap. Gently submerge the wool into the water. Allow to soak for 15 minutes. Continue doing this until the water stays clear. Remember to do everything gently. <br /><br /> Wool washing rules: Never plunge wool into water of different temperatures, especially from hot to cold as you may felt your wool. Don't agitate. You may gently work dirt out of the ends of the wool, but it can very well result in felt. <br /><br /> When you are satisfied that the wool is clean to your liking, and this becomes highly personal, drain it, (you may spin it out in the washer in a mesh bag if you want), and lay it out to dry on a screen or wherever it can lay undisturbed. <bio>Michelle Winters is a spinner, weaver, author and business owner. <content:encoded><![CDATA[ Are you the type who looks at numbers instead of the horse? <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/betting+on+horse+racing" rel="tag">Betting on horse racing</a> may require you to know more than just numbers. You've got to have a good <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/horse+sense" rel="tag">horse sense</a> if you want to have more than just your <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/horse+racing+tips" rel="tag">horse racing tips</a>. <br /><br /> Your Numbers and Your Horse Sense <br /><br /> For a punter dreaming of a miracle win, your life's daily routine begin with a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/horse+racing+form" rel="tag">horse racing form</a>. It is here that you get your <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/free+horse+racing+tips" rel="tag">free horse racing tips</a>. You've hoarded quite a lot of tips, enough to start you on your own racing system. But being an amateur, you accept that you need more than just form and numbers to appreciate the horse racing scene. <br /><br /> You rely on numbers that tell you how the horses did fare in previous races. You look at the numbers and learn how some horses placed 2nd, 3rd, or 1st. Or you check out the "Cs", "D", and "CDs". All amateurs know this. <br /><br /> These are the basic horse racing tips available to all punters. Numbers may rule, but punters also need to know their horse sense. Of course, you are not required to think like a horse. You just need to understand why some horses make it and others don't =96 that is if you want to know what makes a good runner. <br /><br /> Practical Horse Sense <br /><br /> What makes a horse stand out above the rest? Is it his genetic make-up? The trainer? Or the jockey? All of the above contribute towards the making of a champion. But you're just a punter, you argue. Okay here's to a better selection of a horse at the paddocks. Knowing some of these horse racing tips will make you a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/pro+punter" rel="tag">pro punter</a>. You can see through the numbers with some knowledge about the runners. <br /><br /> At the paddock, check out the horse's coat and mane. Naturally, you'd love a horse that has a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/glossy+coat" rel="tag">glossy coat</a> and strong muscles that ripple with every canter. But wait, before you are sold out on the horse, watch for tell-tale signs, like nervous sweating. A nervous horse and one that does not go along with the jockey won't do well. One of those horse racing tips will advice you to put your money in a horse that shows an easy canter. <br /><br /> Muscles Will Tell, So Do The Jockeys <br /><br /> For steeple racing, favor the horse that is a little bone-heavy. For a flat race, a horse must be lean but well-muscled. Look at the rump. It should look strong and firm and the belly must not have any excess fat. The muscles in the rib area should be well conditioned and defined. A little extra weight and the horse is doomed. <br /><br /> Watch the jockeys too. The top jockeys are given the better horses. A jockey must have that horsemanship to know how to handle a horse in a race. A slight pressure here and there and the horse knows what it is supposed to do. Seasoned jockeys have developed the riding skills as well understand their uses. <br /><br /> So your horse sense should help you make your decision, whether you're backing or laying a horse or going for the odds. Your numbers and those horse racing tips will have more logic when you have aced your horse sense. <bio>Need valuable horse racing tips (<a href="http://www.sure2profit.com" >http://www.sure2profit.com</a>), horse racing system (<a href="http://www.sure2profit.com/horseracingsystem.html" >http://www.sure2profit.com/horseracingsystem.html</a>), and a horse racing software (<a href="http://www.sure2profit.com/horseracingsoftware.html" >http://www.sure2profit.com/horseracingsoftware.html</a>)? <content:encoded><![CDATA[Rabbits make wonderful <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/indoor+pets" rel="tag">indoor pets</a> for first time pet owners. In fact, many <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/domestic+rabbits" rel="tag">domestic rabbits</a> are meant to be kept indoors. Domestic rabbits are not like their wild cousins; they do not fair well in extreme temperatures. They also do not react well to predators. Domestic rabbits are very attentive and affectionate. They care about their owners and are very social. Domestic rabbits are meant to be played with and loved by the entire family. <br /><br /> The choice of whether you keep your rabbit in a cage or allow him to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/roam" rel="tag">roam</a> freely is up to you. If you do opt to keep your rabbit in a cage, you should make sure that he is allowed to get out of his cage every day so he can exercise. When purchasing a cage for your rabbit, you should take into account how big he will be when he is mature and purchase a cage that is five times that size. Your rabbit's cage should be big enough for him to sit up on his hind legs. You should also put cardboard or a piece of untreated pine wood in the bottom of wire cages to protect his paws from the wire. <br /><br /> If you decide to allow your pet to roam, make sure that your home is safe. Rabbits like to chew and they don't know the difference between an electrical cord and a stick. Most <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/rabbit+owners" rel="tag">rabbit owners</a> that do allow their pets to roam limit their wandering to specific areas. <br /><br /> Rabbits are herbivores, which means that they only eat fruits, vegetables and grasses in the wild. You should keep a bowl of commercial <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/rabbit+food" rel="tag">rabbit food</a> in your pets eating area. However, you should feed your rabbit hay every day, as well. Many rabbit owners also feed their pets a few <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fruits+and+vegetables" rel="tag">fruits and vegetables</a>, such as a carrot or a bit of apple. Always provide something hard and crunchy for your rabbit to gnaw on. This will keep his teeth from becoming overgrown. You should also make sure your rabbit has access to water and that it is changed every day. <br /><br /> Many domesticated rabbits become accustomed to be handled and even enjoy being held. However, you should always use both hands when picking up your rabbit. Place one hand under his chest and the other around his rump. You should never lift your rabbit by his ears. <br /><br /> Rabbits keep themselves clean. However, you should brush rabbits that have long hair regularly to keep their fur from matting. You should trim your rabbit's nails every six weeks. Also, check your bunny's teeth when you trim his nails to be sure they are wearing evenly. If a rabbit's teeth don't meet evenly, they may grow too long and curl, preventing him from eating. If his teeth are growing too long, you will need to ask your vet to trim them on a regular basis. <br /><br /> Rabbits do not need to go to the vet for vaccinations, but will benefit from a yearly checkup, just like any other pet. You should also take your rabbit to the vet if he has hair loss, loss of appetite, a runny nose, has difficulty breathing or has any swelling or lumps on his body. <bio>For more information about caring for pets, from bunnies to ponies, visit <a href="http://www.animal-chat.com" >http://www.animal-chat.com</a>. <content:encoded><![CDATA[ Educating Yourself About <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/acid+reflux+foods+to+avoid" rel="tag">Acid Reflux Foods To Avoid</a> <br /><br /> Knowing your enemy and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/knowing+oneself" rel="tag">knowing oneself</a> is a vital idiom to learn. Your enemy in this case is are those sapping pains and restless nights caused by <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/acid+reflux+disease" rel="tag">acid reflux disease</a>. Yet there are positive steps to take to alleviate the problem. <br /><br /> For a start it is important to understand the fact that certain foods and drinks can trigger acid reflux and if you suffer from the complaint then you certainly know about acid reflux and the foods to avoid. <br /><br /> The acid reflux foods to avoid include: Dairy products Breads and wheat products <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/spicy+foods" rel="tag">Spicy foods</a> Fried foods <br /><br /> There are very few people who have to will power to say no when it comes to that tasty fried <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/rump+steak" rel="tag">rump steak</a>, yet if it is going to kick off your acid reflux pain then isn't it better to say no and to go with one of the many foods that can actually have a positive influence on your acidity? <br /><br /> The fat and extra pack of protein in a beef steak, as in a great many other foods, will in an instant, throw a switch to your acid producing system. Your body knows that it requires the extra acid to breakdown the food that you have just ingested. Fried beefsteak is just one of the acid reflux foods to avoid. <br /><br /> Many people with acid reflux the problem lies in a loosened lower esophagus sphincter. It is this that permits the acidic contents of the gut to seep back into the gullet, hence causing severe irritation and pain. <br /><br /> You wouldn't ever consider it a safe option to go into your garage at the end of the day, taking out you <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/automobile+battery" rel="tag">automobile battery</a> and pouring yourself a long, hot drink, even over ice! Yet the acid produced by your gut is exactly the same thing. Battery acid is highly potent and so is <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stomach+acid" rel="tag">stomach acid</a>. It is an easy matter for it to burn into your esophagus. Your stomach has an amazing way of dealing with the problem; it produces a highly efficient mucus membrane that lines the gut and prevents any acid attack. You should learn to understand which acid reflux foods to avoid. <br /><br /> Acid Reflux Healing Naturally <br /><br /> Thankfully there is another route to acid reflux healing. It is absolutely not unavoidable that you will have to take prescribed medication and doctor issued drugs. <br /><br /> A few simple, well thought out changes in your lifestyle can work wonders for your condition. <br /><br /> Firstly, learn of the basic acid reflux foods to avoid and seek to delete these from your regular diet. <br /><br /> Raise your head while sleeping - use and extra pillow Avoid pasta dishes Avoid fatty meats Avoid eating after 8pm Keep a diary for a few weeks to help identify those foods that cause acid reflux Avoid caffeine-based drinks <br /><br /> Sure there are always going to be times when you fall behind in your plans but you'll soon learn about those acid reflux foods to avoid. Educate yourself. <br /><br /> This article can only provide a mere wisp into acid reflux causes and healings. Certainly vial yourself of the free information and resources available on my blog you'll find the link below. <br /><br /> Have a great day and a blessed life! <bio>Peter Wellington writes for <a href="http://www.treatacid.com" >http://www.treatacid.com</a>, a website providing a comprehensive archive of free information and guides on the signs, symtoms adn treatment of the painful compliant acid relux - he answers the common question what is acid reflux?... </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/dogs" rel="tag">Dogs</a> and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cats" rel="tag">cats</a> can suffer allergies due to the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/presence" rel="tag">presence</a> of fleas. The identified cause is the saliva of the fleas, especially when the flea has bitten and penetrated the skin of the dog or cat. Since fleas multiply fast and do not voluntarily leave the body of the pet, the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/flea+allergy" rel="tag">flea allergy</a> will last for a long time. <br /><br /> There are symptoms that will tell the pet owner that the dog or cat is being troubled by a flea allergy. Some symptoms displayed by dogs are slightly different to those found in cats. But in general, the symptoms of a flea allergy are continuous itching, loss of hair, occurrence of sores, and unexplained depression. <br /><br /> Among dogs, the specific symptoms are: <br /><br /> Massive loss of hair Presence of red and swollen sores Irritation and scratching in certain areas, such as <br /><br /> o Along the tail o On the rump area o All over the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/hind+legs" rel="tag">hind legs</a> o The region of the groin, which is the sensitive area between the hind legs <br /><br /> Among cats, the symptoms of flea allergy are: <br /><br /> Constant scratching in various parts of the body The formation of painful scabs in sensitive areas, such as: <br /><br /> o The neck o The face o The groin o The main body <br /><br /> A diagnosis of flea allergy no longer involves skin tests and blood tests. The mere presence of fleas indicates that flea allergy has befallen on the pet. The owner can even conduct his own examination by looking for fleas in the coat of the dog or cat. Fleas are parasitic insects that feed on the blood of their host. They are tiny but can cause powerful irritations. They are usually black in color, which make them more difficult to detect especially if the coat of the pet is also dark-colored. <br /><br /> Fleas also move fast. This makes it impossible to individually catch the fleas. They scatter their dirt all over the pet's body and this adds to skin irritation. The flea dirt looks like regular black dust when dry. But when wet, the flea dirt shows a reddish old copper-like color. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fortunately" rel="tag">Fortunately</a>, there are proven ways to remove fleas and allow the pet's body to heal itself from the allergy. <br /><br /> Using flea combs -- These devices can be purchased from any pet supply store or from the veterinarian. Flea combs are designed so that they can sweep out the fleas along with the flea dirt from the coat of the pet. <br /><br /> Bathing or immersing the pet in a recommended solution -- The solution is usually a mixture of water and a detergent which is recommended by the vet. The detergent can immediately kill the fleas and loosen their hold on the skin. <br /><br /> The pet owner will find the dead fleas floating in the bath solution. This solution may also turn reddish due to the presence of so much flea dirt. <br /><br /> Cleaning the environment -- A good general cleaning will get rid off the source of fleas. Cleaning the pet will not prevent the recurrence of flea allergy. The environment must be cleaned too. <br /><br /> Applying anti-itch medications -- These medicines can be administered orally or by direct application on the affected area. They will reduce the painful itching and prevent further infection. <bio>Grace Palce is writing articles for pet meds 101, a comprehensive pet medicine guide <a href="http://www.pet-meds-101.com/">http://www.pet-meds-101.com/</a> Specialing in cat and dog medicine <a href="http://www.pet-meds-101.com/">http://www.pet-meds-101.com/</a>your-dog.php </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[If you were to have legal access to the records of every general practitioner across the United States, you would find that <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/lower+back+pain" rel="tag">lower back pain</a> is one of the most common reasons for visits to physicians. Studies show that about 60 percent of reported pain problems in the U.S. are lower back pain. Most such pain is relieved with treatment as conservative as over-the-pain medication. <br /><br /> Ask a physician for advice on the best treatment, and you will likely be told, "You need back pain exercises to strengthen <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/lower+back+muscles" rel="tag">lower back muscles</a>." <br /><br /> What Kind of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/back+exercise" rel="tag">Back Exercise</a>? Stretching and strengthening back exercise is usually recommended. Hip rotations, rump lifts, and thigh pulls will stretch you back muscles. Alternate superman exercises, along with things such as "slippery heels', "high heels", and "brake pedals" will strengthen your back. <br /><br /> Instructions for these exercises are available from your therapist or online, and no equipment is necessary for performing them. <br /><br /> At the Gym <br /><br /> Our body's cores are often neglected, and need a program of regular <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/back+exercises" rel="tag">back exercises</a> to strengthen lower back muscles. We work on the front of the body, slimming, trimming, and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/building+abdominal+muscles" rel="tag">building abdominal muscles</a>, but we neglect the back. We use exercises to strengthen arm and leg muscles, but forget the back. <br /><br /> When you work out at the gym or health club, check how much time you spend working on abdominal muscle groups. Now schedule identical time for back exercise. <br /><br /> If your gym has a hyperextension table or bench, by all means use it regularly. <br /><br /> In Your Home <br /><br /> The back is vital to standing and sitting upright, and worth investment, if needed. You do not have to invest money, of course, but you may choose to invest in one or more of these four basic tools. <br /><br /> 1. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/exercise+mat" rel="tag">Exercise mat</a>. A <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/simple+exercise" rel="tag">simple exercise</a> mat is often all you need to keep yourself faithful to a regimen of back pain exercises to strengthen lower back muscles. Very inexpensive exercise mats are available in the sporting goods department of discount "box" stores. Cover your exercise mat with a towel to keep it clean, and throw the towel in your wash as needed. <br /><br /> 2. Exercise ball. An exercise ball is also called a physio ball or a Swiss ball. They are available in fitness stores, sporting goods stores, and online. Exercise balls are a cost-effective solution for such things as balance, cardiovascular fitness, coordination, flexibility, neuromotor training, and strength. They can help you do several back exercises. <br /><br /> The exercise ball is a conservative treatment option for back pain sufferers. It will not only treat current pain, but will go far toward preventing future episodes of low back pain. 3. Roman chair. A roman chair is a type of hypertension bench. They are found in many health clubs or gyms, but investing in your own may keep you more faithful in doing vital back exercise. <br /><br /> Roman chairs do not look like chairs, and users are more likely to be on their stomachs than on their backs in roman chairs. They are great for back exercise, though. They are especially helpful for extension exercises, one of a number of effective back pain exercises to strengthen lower back muscles. <br /><br /> A roman chair should have a traction foot plate to help you position yourself securely while using it. For beginners, a 45 degree exercise angle will make it easier to perform back extension exercises. This will mean a less intense workout for you. 4. If you are determined to work your "abs" -- and have a little more to spend on back exercise equipment, an "Ab and back machine" will give you the balance you need. An ab and back machine will place your body in the seated position, which is the most comfortable and safe position for back exercise coupled with ab exercise. Used straight forward, this machine will tighten and tone your abs, obliques and midsection. Rotate the action arm, and the machine provides back exercise. <br /><br /> All back exercise should be done in moderation, and any increases in repetitions should be gradual. This is not a competition, but a means of strengthening your back. If you rush back exercise, or overdo it, you may cause more problems than you had. <br /><br /> Remember, before starting a program of back exercise, consult a physician. There may be underlying physical conditions, such as hernias, that you would worsen by stressing muscles. In addition, medical problems such as coronary disease or diabetes may require your physician's specific observation. <bio>©2007, Anna Hart. It will not only treat current pain, but will go far toward preventing future episodes of low back pain. <br /><br /> 3. <br /><br /> 4. If you are determined to work your "abs" =96 and have a little more to spend on back exercise equipment, an "Ab and back machine" will give you the balance you need. <bio>=A92007, Anna Hart. <content:encoded><![CDATA[ Most people hear the word beef and they automatically think about <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/steaks" rel="tag">steaks</a>, especially the big four: <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/filet+mignon" rel="tag">filet mignon</a>, NY Strip, rib eyes and even top sirloins all pop onto the grill at a great rate. And of course, beef also means hamburger, be it patties, meatloaf or <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/hamburger+helper" rel="tag">hamburger helper</a>. <br /><br /> However, the movement to artisan and natural foods leave most <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ranchers" rel="tag">ranchers</a> in the dust. Many ranchers trying to meet the demand for source verified, locally produced and of course, all natural beef have been smacked hard when he finds the consumer only wants steaks. <br /><br /> Let's take a quick view what a rancher sees when he slaughters a steer. He gets about 450 lbs of beef. Only about 100 lbs is actual steaks (if he is lucky). Yeah, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ouch" rel="tag">ouch</a> for him and for his consumers. So he has to figure out a way to market the rest of the beef. <br /><br /> The easiest way is to grind it into hamburger. And actually, 350 pounds of hamburger doesn't seem all that much, but it really is. While it will easily fit into a large <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/chest+freezer" rel="tag">chest freezer</a>, this amount of hamburger will feed 1050 individuals a 1/3 lb burger, which is a generous size. That is a lot of people. A family of three would get pretty sick of eating this much burger over the course of the year. <br /><br /> Let's look at other cuts. Recently, and especially in the restaurant circle, you may have heard about some other steaks such as flank, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/skirt" rel="tag">skirt</a>, hanger and especially flatiron. The last one is the second most tender steak to filet mignon. All of these steaks are incredibly delicious, but there is not much of them. All together, maybe 15-20 lbs per animal. A couple of those steaks such as hanger and skirt, well there are only two per animal. <br /><br /> Those butcher steaks as they are often called don't really help much. Now we are down to about 330 lbs of beef. Unfortunately, we are now into the cuts that require a bit of time and very small amount of cooking skills. However, in many ways these cuts fill the house with delightful aromas and of course eating enjoyment. <br /><br /> I wouldn't touch a grocery store roast or hamburger for that matter. But artisan or locally raised beef roasts, wow. Some awesome roasts can really wow your family and friends. Artisan roasts are well marbled, almost self-marinating. I'm used to dry-aged beef and so my roasts are essentially fork tender when cooked. <br /><br /> Roasts, bones and some off cuts make up about 150 to 200 pounds. One of my favorite roasts is the old fashion chuck roast. There is close to 50 pounds of this mouth watering cut. The best way to cook this cut is with a simple crockpot. Yup, it will take 8 hours or so to cook and the last few, you might even nibble a bit here and there. But, you don't have to stand there for 8 hours. Put it in the morning and go have fun. <br /><br /> Rump roasts are also good when properly cooked and especially from quality beef. They are a bit dryer than chuck and with a tighter grain, but sliced thin and served with a mushroom gravy, just incredible. <br /><br /> Then we have the odd cuts, London broils, sirloin tip roasts (luxury), fresh brisket (barbecue beef), eye of round (poor mans tenderloin), and a few other steaks such as bottom round. <br /><br /> A few of the odd cuts that even chefs like are short ribs. Braised short ribs are almost sinful for how good they can be. You would be amazed how many 5-star restaurants serve this simple but elegant treat. <br /><br /> While we continue to whittle the cuts down, at the end of the day, you will have about 150-200 pounds of hamburger to eat. And you thought we would eliminate it all. Sorry, can't do it. But a good meatloaf is a pretty tough dish to turn down. <br /><br /> The best way to help an artisan rancher including ourselves is to buy a eighth or a quarter of beef. It is also cost effective way as well and includes some steaks, some roasts and of course some hamburger. <br /><br /> Here is a simple and elegant dish using chuck roasts that your family will beg for more. <br /><br /> Mock Beef Stroganoff <br /><br /> Traditional beef stroganoff is made with diced tenderloin roast. Personally, any beef dish would be incredible with tenderloin, but there are actually better tasting options that take a little longer to make and are touch more economical. <br /><br /> 6 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons minced onion 2 pounds chuck roast, cut thin in 1 x 1 inch cubes and#733; pound mushrooms, sliced salt and pepper to taste 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup sour cream, at room temperature <br /><br /> 1.Preheat the oven to 300F. 2.Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a heavy dutch oven with the heat on medium-high, add the beef and quickly sear all sides until the beef is brown. Add a cup of beef stock and place the lid on the dutch oven and cook until fork tender, about 2 hours. Check occasionally to make sure the meat does not dry out during cooking. 3.Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a heavy skillet. Add the onion and cook slowly until transparent. Remove and set aside. 4.Add the remaining 2 tablespoons butter to the skillet. Stir in the mushrooms, cover and cook 3 minutes. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Whisk the sour cream and add to the pan, but do not allow it to boil. Return the beef and onions to the pan and just heat through. 5.Serve over a bed of egg noodles. <bio>Memphis Red is world renown steak expert, often appearing on the food channel and other cooking shows during the 4th of July. <content:encoded><![CDATA[She first came to our attention after we had visited a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/local+show" rel="tag">local show</a> at the village hall organised by a nearby refuge for abandoned <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/dogs+and+cats" rel="tag">dogs and cats</a>.<br><br>At the ripe old age of eight Poppy, we were told, had been "rescued" from owners who had over time collected more than 30 dogs, many the result of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/interbreeding" rel="tag">interbreeding</a>, and who understandably had found themselves no longer able to cope.<br><br>A little less easy to comprehend perhaps was how come these people had never heard of the possibility of spaying their animals and instead had kept an ever-increasing pack in the most miserable of conditions. When Poppy arrived at the rescue centre, she was undernourished, unhealthy and desperately in need of some TLC.<br><br>Over the next three months she was nurtured back to good health, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/neutered" rel="tag">neutered</a> and vaccinated, but time and time again passed over by <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/curious+visitors" rel="tag">curious visitors</a> as a likely pet because of her age and her less-than-generous helping in the looks department. Even by canine standards Poppy is no beauty.<br><br>Surrounded by larger and more <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/aggressive+dogs" rel="tag">aggressive dogs</a> at the shelter, this mild-mannered dog, who apparently never barks, had even sustained a nip in the rump which had required a few stitches.<br><br>We've kept dogs for several years now, always buying puppies with pedigrees longer than your proverbial arm and pampering them as befits any of man's best friend and perhaps oftentimes more than a little OTT.<br><br>Although harbouring some doubts, we both felt it was about time to return some of the affection and joy we've received over the years to a dog less likely to find a home - in other words one entering dog <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/dotage" rel="tag">dotage</a>.<br><br>After first contacting the shelter directly a couple of weeks ago, we had spent hours discussing the pros and cons of another dog - especially one whose past and character were still a little fuzzy to us.<br><br>We poured over the sites of all the nearby rescue centres, looking at one "I need a home" face after another, reading the profiles of dogs who had spent far too many years chained to a post, kicked, beaten, abused and neglected, or whose owners had died and there was nobody willing to take them on, or pedigree bitches thrown on to the scrap heap after years of factory breeding, or puppies that as adults had outgrown, outchewed and outeaten their initial cuteness, or simply those handed in because someone in the family had discovered after a couple of years that they suddenly had an allergy.<br><br>Each story seemed more chilling, more moving and certainly sadder than the last.<br><br>So with more than a little reticence, we made the one hour journey to Poppy's shelter - just for a visit - and although we didn't exactly "crack" for her on the spot, her plight certainly tugged at our animal-lovers instincts.<br><br>Still there was the unresolved issue of how she - or any other adult dog for that matter - would fit in with our "pack". So we bid farewell and promised to return a week later with a couple of our hounds for the sniff 'n tell session.<br><br>And return we did, taking Poppy and our two beasts for a spin in the car to see how they all travelled together, followed up by a romp in a nearby field. All seemed hunky dory, even if Poppy looked more than a little confused by our imploring requests to "come" "sit" "heel" and "lie" (she is French after all) but after half an hour of doing only what dogs can reasonably do in public, all three appeared to be happy with the natural order of things and we decided in the time honoured tradition to say, "We do."<br><br>Poppy is now settling in to her new home, probably still completely confused as to what has happened and who the heck those two jibbering idiots are who insist on interrupting her sleep and barking gentle commands at her that she has never in her life heard before.<br><br>It's early days yet, and it'll doubtless take time for her adjust and to join in all the fun, but the early signs are encouraging.<br><br>Still we can't help sparing a thought for the thousands of other dogs here in mainland France (and of course elsewhere), abandoned through no fault of their own. And apparently it's especially a problem in Summer, as owners suddenly discover they have nobody with whom they can leave their pet during the holidays and instead decide to abandon them at motorway service stations.<br><br>Even worse is the fate of abandoned dogs in some of this country's overseas departments, such as La Reunion, where they're used as shark bait, as the person in charge of Poppy's shelter reminded us after she had received a consignment of half a dozen dogs from the Indian Ocean island.<br><br>Yes I know there are probably more important things in the world, and I'm not advocating that animals be put above human beings. But as the supposedly superior species on this planet, we have an obligation to protect and treat our environment and all creatures accordingly and it's a sad fact of life that we so often fail.<br><br>And I'm not looking for back-slapping praise nor do I intend to come across as all sanctimonious.<br><br>But if there's anyone out there thinking about getting a dog - or any animal come to that - why not take a trip to the local pound and see what really requires a home. And listen to some of those heart-wrenching stories of exactly what we're capable of doing while remembering if you have even the slightest doubt that - in the words of that campaigning slogan - "A dog (or a cat) is for life.<bio>Johnny Summerton is a Paris-based broadcaster, writer and journalist specialising in politics, sport and travel. If you ever come across a good beef cookbook, you will be able to appreciate a good diagram of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/beef+cuts" rel="tag">beef cuts</a>. <br /><br /> Beef is the widely consumed animal protein through out the world when compared to any other meat. Hence it is important for a good steward to select a good piece of beef for his wonderful recipe. <br /><br /> Grading of beef cuts <br /><br /> The beef is usually graded into three categories based on its quality by the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/united+states+department+of+agriculture" rel="tag">United States Department of Agriculture</a> (USDA). Grades are specified after taking into consideration the color, appearance, meat's consistency and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/last+but+not+least" rel="tag">last but not least</a> the amount of marbling in the beef. The Graded beef is classified as follows: <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/prime+meat" rel="tag">Prime meat</a> Choice meat Select meat <br /><br /> Prime Meat <br /><br /> The meat, which is having more marbling, is termed as Prime meat. This is usually found in fine restaurants. <br /><br /> Select Meat <br /><br /> The select meat consists of less marbling, which means low fat and less calories. But it won't be as tender as that of prime and also contains less juice and flavor. <br /><br /> Choice Meat <br /><br /> Choice meat consists of more marbling than Select meat but less marbling than Prime meat. But it is somewhat tender than Select and also juicy and flavor than select. <br /><br /> Beef Cuts <br /><br /> The names of the beef cuts vary between countries. Sometimes it varies within the regions of the country also. The rear section of the carcass is termed as Rounds in US, but in Canada it is called hip. Here is a break down of some common <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cuts+of+beef" rel="tag">cuts of beef</a>: <br /><br /> Rib eye <br /><br /> This is the top cut preferred by most of the beef connisieurs. This is characterized by abundant marbling. When you cook this beef cut, the rib eye gets melted into the meat and produces a juicy tasting recipe. The Rib eye steak is called an Entrecote in French. <br /><br /> Top Sirloin <br /><br /> Lesser grade cut but this is the largest beef cut when compared to other beef cuts. In layman's terms, a family of four can complete their dinner with one top sirloin. Always prefer to buy prime grade rather than choice and select grades. <br /><br /> Porterhouse <br /><br /> As the name suggests, it is not concerned with any kind of house. This beef cut has ample marbling. It is a top loin with good flavor. It has the largest eye and tenderloin. This is being usually used in restaurants with challenge for their customers. They will give entire meal free for those who took all of their 26-ounce steak. <br /><br /> Chateaubriand <br /><br /> This has been cut from the butt end but should weigh around 24 ounces. A six inches long chateaubriand will weigh around 24 oz. A chateaubriand with Bearnaise sauce served in a dining table is a wonderful delicacy. <br /><br /> Filet Mignon <br /><br /> A well worth costly choice beef cut, if you cook it with pot-roasting. This is most soft with less water beef cut. This don't have intense flavor as that of rib eye and porterhouse. <br /><br /> New York Strip <br /><br /> This is one of the cost-effective beef cut parts. This cheap cut is a t-bone with the tenderloin and also a good quality cut. <br /><br /> T-bone <br /><br /> This is also one of the cheapest beef cuts. This consists of a full loin eye and medium sized tenderloin. A couple for few delicate bites always prefers this. This smaller tenderloin is not always suitable for heavy meals. For heavy dinner, the customers usually prefer New York Strip. <br /><br /> Ground Beef <br /><br /> Ground beef should not be less than 70% lean. The package will usually indicate whether it is from ground sirloin, or ground round. <br /><br /> Suitable cooking methods <br /><br /> Loins and ribs are the most tender cuts of beef. The loins and ribs should be cooked with high heating methods to improve its taste and tenderness. Broiling, grilling, roasting, sautéing, and frying are the common methods employed for cooking the loins and ribs. <br /><br /> Pot-roasting, stewing, and steaming are the most preferred methods of cooking the cuts from the round, plate, brisket and flank. <br /><br /> Selecting beef cuts based on cooking methods <br /><br /> Apart from selecting a good beef cut from butcher shop or grocery store, the beef cuts can also be selected based on the method of cooking you preferred to perform. <br /><br /> If you want to cook the beef on a grill, it is always advised to go for tenderized meat rather than tougher cut from the rounds. A beef with minimum of 2 inches thick may require oven roasts. A very tender cut such as loin and rib primal cuts can be oven roasted for better results. <br /><br /> If you want to do Pot roast, it is always to select the beef cuts from round and chuck. Pot roast is the method of boiling the beef in a pot containing liquid in the stove. Standing rump, eye roast are the best pot roast products. <br /><br /> Tips to select better beef cuts <br /><br /> Before shopping for a good beef cut for a particular recipe, you should learn about the various cuts available in the market. The following tips may help you in selecting good beef cuts: <br /><br /> 1. Try to locate the origin of the cuts from the body of the carcass. <br /><br /> 2. This will help you to identify the names of the cuts. <br /><br /> 3. Look for the tenderness and leanness of the beef cuts before procuring it. <br /><br /> 4. Inspect the "Sell-by" date in the packaged beef. You should buy your beef cut either before or on the "sell by" date. <br /><br /> 5. When selecting the beef cuts from cold storage cases of the grocery stores, the packages chosen for your use should have no excess liquid at all. If it is not too cold, then it has been stored above 40 degrees and taste may be questionable. <br /><br /> Inspect thoroughly the coolness of the pack and ensure that it has not been damaged. <br /><br /> 6. Firmness of roasts and steaks should be checked. Avoid the purchasing of soft roasts and squishy steaks. <br /><br /> 7. Always select the beef cuts that are bright red in color with thin creamy white fat evenly distributed throughout the surface. But if you are selecting veal, the color should be either white or light pink. <br /><br /> 8. Beef injected with flavorings should be avoided because flavoring makes your beef break down and may be easily overcooked. <br /><br /> 9. Always try to avoid buying tenderized beef because during the procedure, the butcher pierces the beef to push the juices and flavor out of it and produces tough and bad flavored beef. <br /><br /> 10. Be friendly with the butcher to get ideas about the perfect beef cuts and sometimes he will offer you fantastic recipes too! <bio>Mike Sullivan is a grill master and meat lover. <content:encoded><![CDATA[You can tell summer has arrived here in France because the signs are all around us.<br><br>First up there are the obvious ones - such as the weather and the dress code. Of course the latter, especially in the nation's capital, can still turn into something of a catwalk as this year's chic hits the streets big time in what for many is the Mecca of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fashion+world" rel="tag">fashion world</a>.<br><br>Then there are the music festivals, concerts, outdoor productions, and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/jumble+sales" rel="tag">jumble sales</a> held up and down the country and let's not forget the smell of a BBQ wafting in from the neighbour's garden.<br><br><a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/prime+time+television" rel="tag">Prime time television</a> news reports begin focussing on the queues at airports and the number of passengers passing through the French capital's major <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/railway+stations" rel="tag">railway stations</a>, rather than hard news. And national newspapers go in for the inevitable silly season.<br><br>The inside lanes of the motorways are bumper-to-bumper full of Dutch cars, trailers and caravans, busting at the seams with provisions for a month.<br><br>In August of course, when (hopefully) summer will be in full swing a huge chunk of the country will all but close down for a month and Paris will put up shop almost completely as the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/french+head" rel="tag">French head</a> south literally and metaphorically with "Aoutien" holidaymakers replacing "Juilletistes".<br><br>But the real clue that the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/whole+shebang" rel="tag">whole shebang</a> is underway has to be the reappearance on the small screen of Secret Story.<br><br>It reared its less than attractive head on Friday evening on the country's number one national channel, TF1, and is set to be in everyone's sitting rooms for the next 10 weeks.<br><br>In essence it's France's answer to Big Brother - only more downmarket. Impossible you might think, but sadly true.<br><br>Basically the idea is very simple. It starts with 15 people, strangers to each other - with the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/odd+exception" rel="tag">odd exception</a>, as will become clearer later on - moving into a built-for-TV house, where they'll be under the watchful eye of the production team and the viewing public 24/7 (via the Internet of course) for two and a half months.<br><br>Each carries with them into the house a "secret" - and the idea is to keep it hidden from the others for as long as possible while trying to cajole out of fellow house mates exactly what they're trying to keep under wraps.<br><br>Off camera there is also the deep bass booming tones of The Voice (La Voix), dropping hints whenever he feels like it, setting playful if somewhat idiotic tasks with cash rewards should they be completed successfully without anyone else in the house realising.<br><br>Every week two candidates are nominated and television viewers get to vote in a 'phone poll (at premium rates of course) on who should stay in. Original stuff huh?<br><br>Yes the country which so often likes to think that it has taken the cultural highroad, brought the world classics in the fields of literature, art and music, prides itself on its language and traditions, cuisine, fine wines and haute couture - now proves once again that it can mix it with the best and worst of what the world of reality TV has to offer.<br><br>The new series, which kicked off on Friday evening will have a hard act to follow.<br><br>Last summer, when TF1 first ran the programme, the eventual winner quickly had her secret revealed .She was a triplet -- and after the other house members wheedled it out of her, in tramped her two sisters.<br><br>Thus the three of them provided viewers with hours of entertainment as they played cards, ate, played cards and slept, eventually being crowned the winners because.... well because they were pretty inoffensive and bland.<br><br>Up against them was the nudist, the escort boy, the son of a famous French tennis player (Henri Leconte) a transsexual and an obnoxious couple (their secret) who bickered and manipulated their way to the final, earning their Warhol moment of fame and then (thankfully) disappearing into oblivion.<br><br>This year's dollop of dubious "culture" kicked off with the contestants tastefully arriving at the house one by one in his and hers blue and pink limos. Each woman seemingly more buxom than the last, many of them sporting micro dresses of which even pop diva Mariah Carey would have been envious.<br><br>And with a few exceptions each man was more muscled, more coiffed and more drop-dead gorgeous than the last, preening and pouting as though they were models in Milan.<br><br>Separately they tottered, strutted, swaggered or tripped their way through the jeering and cheering masses into 10-weeks-worth (for the eventual winner) of fleeting public notoriety and a stab at the chance of picking up a €150,000 cheque at the end.<br><br>Some of the contestants have had their secrets revealed to the public already -- such as the lesbian couple from Belgium, the black mother and white daughter or the 30-something hunk and teenage siren who have to pretend to be "a couple". But none of the other housemates (apart from those "in" on their own coupled secrets) is any the wiser yet.<br><br>Nor do any of the contestants know exactly what secrets they have to find out, although once again viewers have been told that among the 15 there is an Anglican minister (male of female not revealed), an undertaker, a medium (who you would think might just have a head start on the others and know whether he or she would end up winning), a prince or princess and a Don Juan with apparently more than 750 "conquests" under his belt already.<br><br>So as the 15 pretenders to the title of French telly's newest reality TV hero or heroine are busy settling in to their 24/7 life together transmitted live on the Net and daily on the small screen, we can probably expect some tasteless antics similar to last year's offering -- such as the rump steak shoved down the underpants of one male contestant.<br><br>There'll also doubtless be the same sort of petty rivalries, squabbles and handbags-at-dawn stuff that characterised much of the first series.<br><br>But breathe a sigh of relief because at least it's all being done in the name of entertainment. And as much as some might question why and find it "outrageous", there'll probably still be millions tuning in.<br><br>Let's also not forget there's always the "off" button on the TV set or alternative viewing on other channels.<br><br>As compulsive and trashy as Secret Story might be it'll still more than likely pull in the viewers and become its own story in itself as the nation tut-tuts and hisses in disapproval and indignation at the antics of the previous night's revelations.<br><br>Oh well. In the indomitable words of La Voix "C'est tout pour le moment."<bio>Johnny Summerton is a Paris-based broadcaster, writer and journalist specializing in politics, sport and travel. <content:encoded><![CDATA[*BALUCHI*<br><br>Found in areas of Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sind, Muzaffargarh, Bahawalpur, and Baluchistan, the Baluchi Horse, is typically put to use for tonga pulling, tent pegging, and riding for pleasure. <br><br>Characteristics include a gray, chestnut, or bay color, along with strong, fine legs and touching pointed <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ear+tips" rel="tag">ear tips</a>, as well as a long neck and fine heard. Generally, the characteristics of the Baluchi horse will depict where they derive from. For example, the horses in Pakistan are typically larger, yet with a lighter build. Because they have ears that are turned in, people typically find them similar to the Indian Kathiawari. The Baluchi Horse is a possible descendant of the Banamba, Beledougou, and the Barb of West Africa. <br><br>*BAN-EI*<br><br>One of the most popular <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/racing+horses" rel="tag">racing horses</a> in Japan, the Ban-ei horse is exclusively used in horse racing. This draft type, heavy breed, specifically geared for the popular heavy sledge race called Ban-ei <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/keiba" rel="tag">Keiba</a>, stands anywhere between fourteen to sixteen hands. The origin of the Ban-ei horse is in the areas of Breton and Percheron. <br><br>*BANKER*<br><br>Believed to be a descendent of 16th century <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/spanish+horses" rel="tag">Spanish horses</a>, the Banker Pony originates in the North Carolina Bank Islands, such as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/shackleford+island" rel="tag">Shackleford Island</a> and the other Outer Islands of the North Carolina Bank. This semi-feral breed of horse peaks at around fourteen hands. <br><br>*BARB*<br><br>Originating from the North African region of Maghreb, the Barb, is typically used as a horse for light riding. The Tunisian, Moroccan, and Algerian are a few of the many varieties of the Barb. Descendants of the Barb include the United States developed <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/spanish+barb" rel="tag">Spanish Barb</a> and the West African Barb.<br><br>*BASHKIR*<br><br>Originating from the steppe zone and mountains of the Urals and Volga, the Bashkir breed is typically used for meat, milk, and as a utility or draft horse. Identifying characteristics of the Bashkir include its fleshy, short neck, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/massive+head" rel="tag">massive head</a>, and low withers. Typically, the Bashkir has a broad, erect back, with a rounded croup, long, sprung ribs, with bony, short legs. <br><br>As a bony, wide-bodied, small horse, it has a thick tail and mane. Typically colors include mouse grey, roan, chestnut, and bay. Stallions typically carry measurements of 143 cm tall at the withers, 144 cm long, 180 cm chest girth, and 20 cm bone girth. Mares typically carry measurements of 142 cm tall, 145 cm long, 178 cm chest girth, and 18.5 cm bone girth. <br><br>Because mares are typically used for milk, the average amount of milk produced by the mare is 1500 kilograms of milk for the market place. However, the high breeds of mares, in seven to eight lactation months, will produce 2700 kilograms of milk. The work endurance of the Bashkir is extremely high.<br><br>Work to improve the Bashkir breed is underway. Many breeders are breeding with pure bloods and attempting to cross the breed with the Heavy Draft of Russia. Other experiments have been tried with the breed, such as crossing with the Yakut horse and the Kazakh horse. <br><br>*BASHKIR CURLY*<br><br>No one knows the specific origination of the breed of horse known as the Bashkir Curly. In fact, in the horse world, this is to be called the greatest mystery of all. There are many theories as to the origin and naming source. One such theory is that the Bashkir Curly is a direct descendant of the Bashkir from Russia. Though researchers have no been able to prove this because the theory seems unlikely after examination of the breed further. Researchers such as Shan Thomas, Russian scientists, zoo's in Moscow, and livestock experts have discounted this theory altogether. <br><br>On the other hand, during their research they have found that the Tajikistan Lokai, does have many of the same Curly Coat characteristics. However, this does not seem likely as well. Ship logs from horse imports do not depict any imports from the settlers from Russia to the North American coasts.<br><br>The realistic fact is that horses and stock breeding were not altogether popular in the 1700 or 1800 hundreds. Breeding was rarely successful and only a few horses or livestock were kept with the settlements. In fact, Russian America only had 16 horses in the year 1817. Many horses died yearly thanks to the Siberian trip, which was dangerous at the time. Furthermore, local people named the horses in the region Yakut. Therefore, it can be deduced that horses coming from Russian into the Alaskan region would have likely been the breeding of the Yakut instead of the Lokai or Bashkir breeds. The Lokai and Bashkir horses were generated further west and south than the Yakut breeds were.<br><br>More theory still exists, yet another one is that the Bashkir Curly ancestors may have existed in the Ice Age, crossing the land bridge. This theory cannot be supported due to lack of any fossil evidence in the America's to prove any horse existence prior to the Ice Age. <br><br>Several more theories have also been discredited due to lack of any evidence to support the claim or have yet to be tested. Blood tests performed on two hundred curly horses have concluded that the Baskir Curly is not a distinct breed genetically. In fact, the testing concluded that many different breeds of horses contributed the development of the horse. The most prominent being Morgans and Quarter Horses.<br><br>Bashkir Curly -- The Formation of The American Breed<br><br>Present day Bashkir Curly's are not as mysterious. It begins in 1898 when a young man named Peter Damele was riding along with his father on the mountain range of Peter Hanson, which is located near Austin in a very remote section of Nevada. Though Peter died at 90 years old in 1981, it was not before he recalled vividly the sites he saw one day. He came across three horses together. The horses bodies had curly ringlets that were both tight and covered the entire horse. Both Peter and his father were intrigued by these horses and began breeding them from that day forward. Most of the American Bashkir Curly horses derive from the herd Peter and his father owned.<br><br>In 1971, the American Bashkir Curly registry was established. It was the goal of the founds to prevent the extinction of the Baskir within the United States. Because they were becoming heavy in numbers, people were slaughtering them ignorantly. The founders also started the act of establishing traits in breeding. They summoned owners in the United States to identify the Bashkir Curly unique characteristics. After compilation of these traits, many interesting characteristics were noted. For example, the mane hair of the Bashkir Curly can be entirely shed, in some cases their tail hair can be as well. This is routinely done during the summer season. During the winter season, the hair grows back. This is seen as a great characteristic for owners because the tight, kinky, fine hair can become virtually impossible to maintain. <br><br>Another feature that is extremely interesting is that the offspring of the Bashkir Curly only receives the characteristics of the curly half of the time. In other words, only half of their young will only have the characteristics of the Curly. This is true even when the male and female are both curly coats. Winters are no trouble for this breed of horse, they are extremely hardy and able to sustain through winter conditions of extreme severity. In Nevada, the 1951 to 1952 winter was extremely harsh. The only surviving breeds were the curly horses.<br><br>The Bashkir Curly is a medium sized horse, comparable to that of the Morgan in its early days. Generally they can come in a variety of colors that most common horses come in, which includes Pinto and Appaloosa. Some horses have chestnuts, while others have ergots. Oriental breeds have wide eyes for a wide vision range. Their hooves are black, tough, and round. Other characteristics include a short back, strong hocks, flat knees, straight legs, powerful shoulders, and smooth rump,.<br><br>The Bashkir Curly is popular is horse events. You can easily spot them in events such as dressage and driving, endurance riding, competitive riding, gaited pleasure, western pleasure, English equitation, roping, jumper, hunter, Gymkhana, Reining, western riding, pole bending, and barrel racing.<bio>Phillipe Wiskell is a writer for HorseClicks.com, popular classifieds of <a href="http://www.horseclicks.com/horses/">horses for sale</a>, <a href="http://www.horseclicks.com/trailers/">used horse trailers</a> and <a href="http://www.horseclicks.com/properties/land/">land for sale</a>.</bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[ I was introduced to a real stress-reliever while in Thailand; a most amazing practice, and one that all new expats come to love. It was the wonderful Thai massage. It is usually performed by strong young girls, however I did notice a few males in the trade. One hour of this <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/relaxing+massage" rel="tag">relaxing massage</a> and most women would be able to negotiate with a terrorist. What a warm and muscle-stimulating practice it is =97 for most people. I have a problem with pain. I admit it. I have no tolerance for pain and don't try to hide it. <br /><br /> After a few trips to the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/massage+parlors" rel="tag">massage parlors</a> around town, I'd earned a reputation as Madame Ow-Ow. The tiny <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/massage+girls" rel="tag">massage girls</a> all seemed to be amazed that I could be so sensitive. As soon as I appeared in the waiting room, I'd hear the giggles start. Fine, giggle all you want =97 just don't hurt my body. Like it or not, they had to use a little less muscle with me. One of the little power-houses literally left her fingerprints on my arms and legs in the form of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/purple+circles" rel="tag">purple circles</a>. I warned her about my condition before she started on me; in fact, I showed her some old bruises that the last girl had left on my rump. She obviously had no clue why I was pointing to four round dots on my butt, but as was the norm in this <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/land+of+smiles" rel="tag">land of smiles</a>, she giggled and began leaving her own marks. Giggling I later learned, can also be the Thai way of hiding embarrassment. Bruises or no, I kept going back =97 possibly because it felt so good when they stopped. Okay, I admit it, I'm a masochist. <br /><br /> Seeing all the massage parlors in town brought back memories of an earlier visit to Thailand. I had to laugh as I remembered being introduced to the words: "Physical Massage." It was in the 70s and we were expats living in Iran. My husband, feeling we had earned this treat just by living in that hotbed, had surprised us with a week of RandR at Pattaya Beach. On our first day there we decided to let the kids enjoy the pool while we read and soaked up the sun. We were half asleep when my youngest son, about ten years old at the time, came running up to us. "Dad! Can I have ten bucks?" <br /><br /> "Whaa for?" my half-asleep husband asked. <br /><br /> "That lady over there said to bring ten bucks and she'd give me a good massage." <br /><br /> At these not so soft-spoken words, we both sat up =97 as well as most of the people around the pool =97 and looked in the direction my son pointed. And there she was, a beautiful Thai girl who looked to be no more than sixteen, standing in her shimmering red gown, leaning seductively against the massage parlor door, smiling the sweet Thai smile and motioning for my son to come to her. <br /><br /> "Uh, I think not, son," I said. <br /><br /> "But, why?" he whined in his usual "you love her more than me" voice while pointing to his sister. "You give her money all the time. Can't I just have ten bucks?" <br /><br /> Honey," I whispered, "she's not a nice lady. She'll take your money and God knows what she'll do to you. Besides, massages are for grown-ups. Wait until you're older, then you can pay for it." <br /><br /> "Paaaleeez," he cried plaintively. <br /><br /> By now the male population around the pool was sitting upright, awaiting our decision. <br /><br /> "No! And that's final," said my husband in a not-so-final voice. This was not the answer my son wanted to hear. He was the kind of kid who never would accept the word "No" and could argue you to the ground until you cried "Uncle!" <br /><br /> "She said it was good for me," he yelled in his outdoor voice. "How could she hurt me, Mom? Dad could go along with me to make sure I got my ten bucks' worth." <br /><br /> "No." I said, this time in my outdoor voice. "No more talk of massages." I turned to my husband for reinforcement, but he was busy putting a bookmark in his novel. "Go back to sleep," I said, "you're not going anywhere either." <br /><br /> One of the best massages I found was in an old run-down home outside of town. The Hilton Hotel Spa it was not, but you soon overlooked the lack of fluff for the wonderful treatment you received. The house was over 100 years old, with cracked windows, torn curtains, sagging sills, patches of linoleum missing here and there, and a musty smell that permeated the whole environment. The interior walls in the center of the house had been removed and the space had been converted to a large dormitory-type room, with mats laid out side-by-side on the floor. Much to my discomfort, air conditioning (or air-con as the Thais say) was sadly absent in this old house. The AC phenomenon was introduced to Thailand with the advent of the farangs invading their land. The Thais don't seem to feel the heat as the farangs do. When the temperature drops to eighty-five degrees, it might move them to put on a sweater. <br /><br /> Now, I could handle everything else in this place, but when the weather was at its worst, the massage room became one huge sauna and bordered on feral. I tried to get there early before it became too warm. Warm, as in 100 degrees F. The place lacked the niceties of Muzak and ambiance, but it was home to some wonderful girls. <br /><br /> The Blind Student Massage School, appropriately named, was home to young girls who were clinically blind, but who gave wonderful massages. The girls were mainly from poor villages where their parents were unable to get help for them. They were brought to Bangkok by Good Samaritans and schooled in the art of Thai massage. Once trained, they were sent to Pattaya and other towns to live with their benefactors, working to earn their keep. The Thai couple who owned this establishment gave the girls a home to live in, in exchange for their massage work and a small salary. They did very well on their tips and always thanked us profusely. We did wonder how they knew how much we tipped. <br /><br /> The routine went something like this: After check-in, you were given a towel and a pair of cotton PJs =97 designed to fit a ten-year-old =97 then escorted to individual vapor steam rooms the size of a small shower, with a bench seat for snoozing. After disrobing, you'd be saturated in wonderful mystical aromas of incense, eucalyptus steam and various other herbal delights. It took me five minutes of this heaven before I would doze off and dream I was Eve, lolling about the Garden in my birthday suit. When you'd yell "Uncle" they'd scoop you out of the shower, help you on with your PJs, and lead you to the massage room and the assigned mat on the floor. What joy! You were clean, warm, snugly, and then the fun began. <br /><br /> The girls would first try to identify you =97 a game they all played with giggles and excitement. They'd begin by running their sensitive little fingers over your face and downward. By the time they reached your legs they could identify you. Of course, with me, as soon as I uttered "Ow-Ow" I was caught, and had to listen to a chorus of giggles wafting through the room. I still think it was unfair; when they couldn't immediately identify me, they'd give a pinch to hear my Ow-Ow. <br /><br /> After one hour of this heaven you were escorted to the co-ed shower room where you'd find the usual male opportunists =97 showering, changing clothes, urinating, or sitting and watching you do the same. At first it was difficult, but over time I would envision myself as Raquel Welsh =97 loin cloth and all =97 and didn't feel quite as modest. <br /><br /> At this same establishment they offered haircuts, facials, manicures and pedicures =97 I asked for the sighted girls for these jobs =97'all for less than ten dollars. If you came in for a wash, you were put on what looked like a hospital gurney and rolled to the shampoo bowl. The first time I experienced this I was a tad apprehensive. Okay, where's the operating room? But it turned out to be another treat for the pampered farang. They had a very inventive way of preparing you for the shampoo by slipping one end of a rubber tray under your neck, while the other end drained into the shampoo bowl. Why don't we have this technique stateside? What a simple concept: the water doesn't drain down your neck, leaving a soggy blouse; no wet towels to deal with, and no concrete slab for your arthritic neck to balance on. You're in a lying position and soon you're fast asleep. <br /><br /> Along with these wonderful shampoos would come a head massage, neck and scalp massage, and anything else you wanted massaged. The shampoo was something all the expat ladies looked forward to; three washes, three rinses, and a twenty-minute head and neck massage. <br /><br /> Other pleasures to the senses were the trips that many of the ladies took to Bangkok for beauty treatments. The salon offered massages, hair and nail services, and pedicures. It was heaven to spend the day being pampered. If you were in a hurry it was the best place to go. To gain entrance you had to ring a buzzer, wherein the manager would greet you at the door and ask you three questions: (1) Are you in a hurry? (2) What services do you want? And (3) Whom would you like to have work on you? If the answer to number one was in the affirmative, the manager would assign as many girls to you as you had appendages; one girl for each hand for manicures, one girl for each foot for pedicures, one girl for cutting, curling and blow drying your hair. Watching all these girls working on me, I felt I was being prepared for a Thai barbecue. <br /><br /> It was marvelous if you needed to be in and out quickly, but made it quite difficult to read a book. <br /><br /> (Reprinted with permission from A Broad Abroad in Thailand by Dodie Cross). <bio>Dodie Cross is a freelance writer who has received numerous awards for her writing and poetry.
