Gastric bypass surgery is not about losing weight the easy way and looking good, the operation is about improving health.

There are several types of gastric bypass procedures, but all of them involve bypassing part of the small bowel by greater or lesser degrees. Surgical options Gastric bypass procedures involve constructing a gastric pouch whose outlet is a Y-shaped limb of small bowel of varying lengths. By far, the most common procedure is the gastric bypass, which is done both open and laparoscopically.

In most types of gastric bypass surgeries done today only 50 cm of the intestine is allowed to function in normal fashion.

How is the gastric bypass surgery different than the LAP-BAND? Generally, gastric bypass patients stay in the hospital one to two days following surgery, and recovery takes approximately one to three weeks. With laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, most patients are completely back to normal activities around three weeks after surgery.

Of the several surgical variations of gastric bypass now available, the most widely used is the "Roux-en-Y" procedure. Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass involves dividing the stomach and forming a small pouch while sealing off a large proportion of the stomach. In lay terms it is like a hybrid of the intestinal bypass and a gastric stapling procedure. Early adverse event rates are low following laparoscopic gastric banding, and are probably lower than gastric bypass. The most common are the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, or simply, the gastric bypass and the Lap-Band, or adjustable gastric banding system.

As with any surgery, there are possible risks with gastric bypass. With no treatment, one in four gastric bypass patients will develop gallstones following surgery. During the recovery period the limitations imposed by the gastric bypass procedure should be kept in mind.

The following are common phases in the gastric bypass diet progression: Liquids. In general, the gastric bypass diet includes foods that are high in protein, and low in fat, fiber, calories, and sugar. Fiber, found in foods like bran, popcorn, raw vegetables, and dried beans, is also limited on the gastric bypass diet. The gastric bypass diet is low in sweet and sugary foods for reasons.

Nonetheless, gastric bypass surgery is a major surgical procedure and is certainly not suitable for everyone and is not without risks. For these people the traditional remedy of diet and exercise simply doesn't work and they are turning increasingly towards gastric bypass surgery. A soon-to-be published study of gastric-bypass patients age 65 and older also showed that the procedure produced good results and improved quality of life. I have a friend that had gastric bypass surgery about 6 months ago - he is doing great! <bio>The most common surgery for obesity is Gastric Bypass.
The most common surgery for obesity is gastric bypass. The gastric bypass results in an effective resolution of major illnesses that accompany obesity. Most gastric bypass surgery candidates have already tried more conventional diet and exercise plans with little success. With few options, doctors and patients are increasingly turning to gastric bypass surgery as a lifesaver and often as a last resort.

Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity. Obesity risks add to complications of gastric bypass. Today, gastric bypass surgery is being marketed and promoted to obese patients as a panacea for obesity. According to the report, "Gastric bypass is now established as an effective and safe therapy for morbid obesity and its associated health problems.

Research investigators followed 20 women who underwent gastric bypass for treatment of morbid obesity to compare the safety and effectiveness of RNY and MGB in the treatment of morbid obesity. It was found that Laparoscopic gastric bypass is simple, effective and safe.

Patients who have a BMI over 50 tend to lose about 50 percent of their excess weight with a gastric bypass. With the gastric bypass, patients with a BMI under 50 seem to lose 70 percent of their excess weight or more.

Undergoing a gastric bypass requires patients to commit to a new lifestyle. The amount of calories and nutrients absorbed by the body are significantly decreased after gastric bypass surgery.

People who have gastric bypass operations usually lose two-thirds of their excess weight within two years after the operation. It is no miracle that patients of the gastric bypass lose weight rapidly.

However, weight reduction surgery known as gastric bypass is merely the first step. After a gastric bypass, it is recommended that you follow a certain diet in order to maintain proper weight balance and nutrient intake. The gastric bypass diet helps you maintain good nutrition while losing weight. People who regain weight after gastric bypass surgery usually are consuming too many high-calorie foods and beverages and do not exercise enough. About 1 in 20 people who have gastric bypasses fail to lose sufficient weight or regain weight and the operation has to be repeated.

Kyle Potts is a general surgeon who specialize in performing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery for people with severe obesity. He performs laparoscopic obesity surgery since 1994 and is experienced in gastric banding, gastric bypass, intragastric stimulation and intragastric balloon procedures. He specializes in laparoscopic redo surgery where he converts failed previous obesity surgery to gastric bypass laparoscopically.

Before you consider going for such a surgery, it is always wise to read up everything on this subject, and subsequently meet your doctor to discuss the possibilities of the surgery. <bio>The most common surgery for obesity is Gastric Bypass.
With the popularity today's media has placed on physical fitness and the beauty of those who are physically fit, gastric bypass surgery has gained popularity as a solution for obesity, especially morbid obesity.

While there are two primary methodologies within the world of gastric bypass surgery, the original method, called the "loop" method. Having been practiced in the 1960s, this method is now commonly avoided because of better advances in research and medicine. Right now, the most common gastric bypass method is known as the Proximal, or Roux en-Y system.

As with any gastric bypass method, with Proximal, or Roux en-Y gastric bypass surgery, food intake is significantly restricted due to the mechanical limitations of the stomach.

With this surgery, a small pouch of a stomach is created and essentially closed off from the rest of the stomach. As you take in food, it moves into this tiny pouch and then on to the `Roux limb' of the small bowel which is created during surgery. This allows the food to bypass the rest of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. With this re-routing of the intestinal tract, the body is unable to absorb as many calories as previously done. This allows the body to lose weight at a rapid pace.

Finally, the remaining gastric bypass method is known as the biliopancreatic diversion. This method is used less frequently and is rather complicated. With the biliopancreatic diversion , portions of the stomach are literally removed from the GI tract.

A tiny pouch of remaining stomach is then directly connected to the end section of the small bowel. Since this method bypasses the remaining intestine there are less calories absorbed and weight loss occurs.

The gastric bypass methods used today are important advances in the field of surgical medicine and have helped thousands of people who previously suffered with obesity to lose the weight with which they struggled for years. No, it is not a quick fix, but in some cases, the gastric bypass methods are life-saving alternatives to continuing to haul around the excess pounds. <bio>For more important information on health topics sure to visit http://www.the-health-hub.com where you will find information and resources on personal health such as aches and pains, hair restoration, diet and nutrition, fitness and many other articles that you can view at http://the-health-hub.com </bio>

The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System is a form of weight loss surgery that is is becoming more popular because of its lower costs and quicker recovery times. The operation is also perceived as being less invasive than the more commonly used Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure.

The laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding procedure is often called the LAP-BAND® System, after the inflatable silicon band that divides the stomach, creating a very small stomach pouch with an adjustable opening to the rest of the stomach. The diameter of the band is usually about two inches, but the surgeon can adjust its diameter by pumping saline into it from a reservoir implanted under the patient's skin.

When the band is in place, the stomach takes on an uneven hour-glass shape, with the smaller portion at the top.

Unlike the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, the gastric banding procedure does not reroute the upper intestine. Weight loss occurs solely because the size of the stomach is restricted. The adjustable band decreases the amount of food the patient can eat at one time, but does not otherwise interfere with the digestive process.

Because the procedure does not bypass any portion of the intestines, patients who have the gastric banding operation don't usually experience one of the Roux-en-Y operation's more uncomfortable side effects, the dumping syndrome. After a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass operation the patient is unable to eat sugary foods, and some patients are also unable to eat red meats and any food with high fat contents. When patients attempt to eat these foods they become nauseous and may vomit, making the experience extremely uncomfortable.

Since the gastric banding operation does not cause this side effect, post-operative patients are still able to eat the foods that originally led them to obesity, and for this reason long-term nutritional and behavioral counseling is usually recommended.

Gastric banding patients do not lose weight as quickly as patients who undergo the full gastric bypass procedure. This may be the reason why many U.S. surgeons prefer to offer the Roux-en-Y operation for their obese patients. Surgeons in Europe and Australia appear to show a preference for the less invasive gastric banding, because it is usually safer.

Although weight loss is slower with the gastric banding procedure, after 3 to 5 years both gastric banding and gastric bypass patients show comparable weight loss, according to recent studies.

If no complications occur, a patient can expect to go home in a day or two after the operation. This helps to reduce the total cost of the surgery, which may run around $14,000 to $18,000 if there are no complications, as opposed to the commonly quoted $35,000 to $40,000 that gastric bypass surgery will cost in the United States.

An operation using the LAP-BAND® system is less invasive than gastric bypass, and there are fewer reported complications and deaths from this type of surgery. However, complications do occasionally occur, and a second operation is sometimes needed. A recent study that looked at the records of 300 gastric banding patients found a 5% complication rate, while other studies have found the rate of complications to be higher. Some patients will need a second operation due to band slippage or because the stomach pouch becomes dilated.

As with all patients who undergo rapid weight loss, gall stones are common, and long-term nutritional and behavioral counseling is needed for the best outcomes. <bio>If you want to know more about the LAP-BAND® system, the cost of gastric bypass, or the gastric bypass diet, visit http://www.1gastricbypass.com </bio>

If you are intending to have a gastric bypass performed there are several steps you need to go through before the surgery. First off you'll need to do some research for yourself and decide if a gastric bypass is for you. Then you'll need to see your doctor.

Many doctors will insist on trying alternative methods of weight loss before moving on to the last resort as they call it. A gastric bypass surgery is permanent and an extreme form of weight loss. There are patients who undergo the surgery only to fail to lose their weight and keep it off. This can occur from cheating, falling back on old habits or a sedentary lifestyle. So if you really want to lose the weight by having a gastric bypass done you are going to have to make lifestyle changes in addition to the gastric bypass surgery.

There may be a two year period in which you work with your doctor before the surgery to make dietary and exercise changes. If you still cannot lose sufficient weight to be considered healthy then the doctor will move on to the next steps. You will discuss the various types of surgeries. You will have a variety of tests done on you, including blood gases and typing. Also you will have to get your gastric bypass surgery approved by your insurance. Some insurance companies may not approve the procedure if they feel you can lose weight by alternative means. That's why its important to work with your doctor for up to two years and have a documented record of previous attempts to lose weight.

Also before your gastric bypass surgery you will have to visit with a psychiatrist for a mental competency evaluation and get approved. You will begin meetings with a nutritionist, preferably someone who has worked with other gastric bypass patients, about changing your diet and what to expect. <bio>Read more gastric bypass articles and gastric bypass surgery news or visit our http://www.gastric-bypass-stories.com </bio>

You wake up one morning and you decided that you have had enough of being obese! You have a very personal reason: a choice for change and a healthier you.

Whether you're considering weight-loss surgery and want to understand what's ahead, adapting to a new lifestyle following the procedure, or looking for non-surgical weight-loss tips, all the information is here.

Opting for weight-loss surgery is not an easy choice. To decide whether it's right for you, consider the facts of the procedure and the post-operative road you'll need to travel.

The challenges of dieting, exercise and even medications can seem daunting when trying to keep weight off. As a result, many have turned to weight-loss surgery as the best long-term option. But before making that difficult decision, questions need to be answered.

Which type of weight-loss surgery is right for you? What's involved in the procedure? Are there any risks associated with weight-loss surgery? In normal digestion, food passes through the stomach and enters the small intestine, where most of the nutrients and calories are absorbed. It then passes into the large intestine (colon), and the remaining waste is eventually excreted.

Gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size, which reduces the amount of food you eat and thus the calories consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed. This leads to weight loss.

The most common gastric bypass surgery is a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

In a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the stomach is made smaller by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach using surgical staples or a plastic band. The smaller stomach is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine (jejunum), bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine (duodenum).

This procedure can be done by making a large incision in the abdomen (an open procedure) or by making a small incision and using small instruments and a camera to guide the surgery (laparoscopic approach).

Male gender is a predictor of morbidity and age a predictor of mortality for patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery. Open gastric bypass surgery requires up to a 5-day stay. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery requires a hospital stay of 2-3 days. <bio>The most common surgery for obesity is Gastric Surgery.
Weight loss surgery is a rapidly developing area of medicine, and many have turned to weight loss surgery as a treatment for obesity. There are a number of different types of weight loss surgery that are offered today. Because of this fact, one needs to keep in mind that no one procedure has emerged for being "ideal" when it comes to the treatment of obesity. Each procedure has its own advantages, as well as potential problems and complications.

Types of Weight Loss Surgery Available

Today, there is a wide array of surgical procedures available for the treatment of obesity. Some of these include: Open Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Micro pouch Gastric Bypass, Long Limb Gastric Bypass, Biliopancreatic Diversion, Gastric Band, Laparoscopic Gastric Band, Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band, Vertical Banded Gastroplasty and the Laparoscopic Vertical Banded Gastroplasty. (Note., there are 3 gastric band types on the market today--the American by Bionterics, the Swedish band by Obtech--Johnson and Johnson and the French band by MidBand.)

You and you alone, along with some guidance from a medical professional should decide if having surgery to help with your weight problem is the right answer. Having any type of surgery does present some risks. For instance, with Gastric Bypass it is reported that up to 20% of patients have needed to have corrective surgery because of complications such as the breakdown of the staple line and abdominal hernias. In addition, patients are at risk for developing gallstones.

Considering surgery to help you with your weight loss, is a serious decision. The National Institute of Health has developed somewhat of an outline to help in the determination. Generally if you are 100 pounds or more over your ideal weight, or have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or if, your BMI falls between 35--40, and you have one or more of the following obesity related conditions: Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or degenerative joint disease, and if you've tried and failed to lose excess weight with diet and exercise, then you are a good candidate. <bio>Sanoviv provides alternative and complementary health care, obesity surgery, lap band surgery, bariatric surgery and more with advanced diagnostics and holistic procedures.
There is more to gastric bypass than merely controlling stomach size. During gastric bypass surgery, a large portion of the patients stomach is stapled together, leaving a tiny pouch.

When you get your gastric bypass surgery you will have a new stomach that only holds about three tablespoons of food at a time. With your stomach pouch reduced to the size of a walnut, you'll need to follow a gastric bypass diet.

The surgeon does not remove any part of the stomach or other tissue while doing the gastric bypass operation. This operation is the most common gastric bypass procedure performed. In another more complicated gastric bypass operation, portions of the stomach are removed. In this more complicated gastric bypass operation, portions of the stomach are removed. This is a relatively complex operation. It is recommended against having it reversed.

Results from long-term follow-up data of gastric bypass surgery show that over a five-year period, patients lost 58% of their excess weight.

Eating sweet or sugary foods promotes "dumping," a reaction which can occur after the gastric bypass operation. Dumping syndrome occurs when the small intestine fills too quickly with undigested food from the stomach, as can happen following gastric bypass surgery.

Other commonly seen complications of gastric bypass surgery include intolerance to some foods, vitamin and mineral deficiency, gallstones, bleeding stomach ulcers, hernia and dehydration. The most important of all, given that gastric bypass patients have a new, tiny stomach to fill is diet.

Another recent problem which is fairly common, especially in menstruating women, after gastric bypass, is anemia. Because many nutrients are not absorbed by the body after gastric bypass, anemia can be a long-term effect. Due to the changes in digestion after gastric bypass surgery, patients may develop such nutritional deficiencies as anemia, osteoporosis, and metabolic bone disease.

The gastric bypass operation reduces the progression and mortality of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. However, this complication only occurs to a very small degree in the gastric bypass operation. One of biggest advancements in the gastric bypass operation has been the technique used to enter into the abdomen through the laparoscopic approach.

Gastric bypass surgery creates dramatic changes in the size and shape of the stomach. Barely 16 months after gastric bypass surgery, which reduced your stomach to the size of a hard-boiled egg, a patient is able to shed 185 pounds. <bio>The most common surgery for obesity is Gastric Bypass.
Gastric bypass is a kind of surgical interference that is mostly used for significant weight loss if you are over weight. This surgical interference reduces your calorie intake. After the surgery, stomach will be small and you feel full faster to reduce amount of food. Part of stomach with small intestine will be literally skipped over so less amount of calories. Gastric bypass is also known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, Bariatric surgery - gastric bypass.

In Gastric by pass stomach is made small by creating a new small pouch at the top of abdomen by using plastic bands or surgical staples. The smaller stomach connected directly with the middle portion of small intestine called as jejunum, bypassing the remaining part of stomach and upper potion of small intestine called as duodenum. After performing Gastric bypass the patient is recommended to reduce the quantity of his intake food as small intestine absorbs less calories at this stage. This leads to weight reduction.

Doctors will only recommend for bypass surgery if you have no other way to lose weight and it is only considered if your body mass index 40+. Bypass surgery usually needs 4 to 6 day hospital stay. Most people return to normal activities within 20 to 30 days. Gastric bypass may sometime cause dumping syndrome. Dumping syndrome occurs when food moves very quickly through stomach and intestines, which causes sweating, weakness, faintness, nausea and sometimes diarrhea just after eating. These symptoms may go worse by taking high calorie foods.

As other surgeries, gastric bypass surgery also includes risks. Risks include:

1. Leak from stomach into abdominal cavity that can cause peritonitis. 2. Blood clot in lung. 3. Vitamin B12 deficiency- this occurs in near about 30% cases. 4. An iron deficiency anemia- this occurs in 50 cases. 5. Possibility of ulcers in 10% to 20% cases.

The weight reduction results after gastric bypass surgery are normally steady. Most patients reduce an average of 8 pounds every month and can reach towards stable weight between 20 and 25 months. Usually, greatest rate of weight loss take place in very beginning i.e. just after the surgery when you are just on liquid diet.

You will need a regular check up with doctor usually during first year. Your physician will evaluate your mental and physical health status, including weight change and your nutritional requirements. With help of a physician, dietitian and nutritionist, you can reduce your weight effectively through gastric bypass. <bio>Christopher H. Waters writes on several different.
When people start getting overweight they usually need to start thinking about how to lose this weight. For a lot of people the best ways to accomplish this goal is by exercise and going on a diet. There are some instances however, where these methods will not provide any relief at all. For these people their doctors can advise any of the gastric bypass procedures.

These procedures will need to be done once the person's overall health is seen to. The best person to advise a patient about the suitability of having a gastric bypass surgery is that of their doctor. If you are unsure about what is entailed in the surgery you should do some research.

This research will inform you exactly what occurs in the different versions of the gastric bypass surgery. As some of these details may be couched in medical terms you should write down any questions that you have. This way you can ask your doctor for help. You should make sure that you are getting this advice well before you make an decision to have gastric bypass surgery.

There is one other item which needs to be covered for people who are planning on having this gastric bypass surgery. This is the question of whether you will be able to afford having such a surgery. You can find out what sort of costs you can expect to pay for the various surgeries. These gastric bypass surgeries will generally cover ones like mini gastric bypass surgery, duodenal bypass surgery, bariatric surgery and others.

Once you have decided which of these surgeries that you want you will need to see just how much you should keep aside in order to pay for various fees like the hospital stay, the doctor's fees and other such expenses. For those of you who are interested in having a gastric bypass surgery you should understand that sometimes you can get good service at places which specialize in these types of weight reduction surgeries.

As with all surgical procedures you should make sure that you are following the doctor's advice so that you are consistently losing weight. While getting a gastric bypass surgery is a good idea you may want to try the old fashioned options before you make an appointment for such a surgery.

And while getting this gastric bypass surgery is an ideal way to lose weight you will need to understand that it is not a permanent solution. Instead you will need to drastically change your entire lifestyle in order to accommodate the changes which have happened with a gastric bypass surgery. <bio>Author's Sites: http://www.easyhomeremedy.com/pregnancy_weight_loss/index.html , http://www.easyhomeremedy.com/home_remedy_for_vaginal_infections.html

</bio>

There are several requirements for patients of gastric bypass surgery. This is to ensure that the major surgery isn't performed unnecessarily or on those with very high risk factors. Be aware that gastric bypass is a major surgery and you will be in much pain, experience many changes in your body and have to adapt to a new lifestyle.

Initially a gastric bypass surgery is only an option for those with a body mass index of forty or higher. Your body mass index is a general measure of whether your body weight is healthy for your height. A BMI of forty or higher indicates that you are obese and would benefit from a gastric bypass.

A surgery of this kind is not available to everyone with a body mass index this high though. You need to have tried for sometimes up to two years to lose weight via alternative methods, such as dieting before a doctor will consider this last resort method.

In addition a doctor will consider the following requirements when discussing this surgery with you. Whether you have been obese for five years or more. They will make sure you do not have a history of alcohol abuse or an untreated mental condition such as depression. As these conditions can make it harder for you after your surgery and may be part of the root cause for obesity in the first place. You should be relatively healthy in order to undergo the surgery and have a reasonable chance of survival and success. You should also be between the ages of eighteen and sixty five. Any younger and a doctor will insist that you keep trying other methods of weight loss. Any older and an ethical and experienced surgeon will begin to question the plausibility of survival for the patient. <bio>Read more gastric bypass articles and gastric bypass surgery news or visit our http://www.gastric-bypass-advice.com.. </bio>

Because of the many complications associated with the mini-gastric bypass weight loss procedure, it has been abandoned by nearly all bariatric surgeons as unsafe. In fact, The American Society for Bariatric Surgery has determined that the procedure should never be performed.

The mini gastric bypass is done using a laparoscopic technique that avoids large scars and cuts down on operating time. However, this is still a very drastic procedure. The mini gastric bypass procedure is sometimes called the "Loop Gastric Bypass."

The surgery requires less time in the operating room than the more commonly performed Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. However, insurance companies consider the procedure "experimental" and rarely cover it because of its poor safety record.

The mini gastric bypass is "mini" only because the incisions are small when the surgery is done laparoscopically. The surgical changes are quite extensive. Common complications can send the patient back to the operating room, where large incisions may be required to repair internal leaks or remove infection.

Some debilitating complications associated with the mini-gastric bypass, such as bile reflux, can appear a year or more after the surgery, and may require a major operation to reroute the digestive tract.

During the surgery, a small portion of the stomach is surgically removed from the rest of the organ, and the lower portion of the new section is attached to the upper intestines below the pancreas. The larger portion of the stomach, which no longer connects to the esophagus, will remain in the abdominal cavity. Because only the smaller portion of the stomach is now used for digestion, and some of the intestinal tract is bypassed, patients eat smaller portions and nutrients are not well absorbed. This will lead to weight loss.

Studies have shown that the mini-bypass procedure creates a severe hazard in the event of any leakage after surgery. It also seriously increases the risk of ulcer formation, irritation of the stomach pouch by bile, and could increase the potential of esophageal cancer.

Many persons who underwent this procedure in the past have required major surgery to correct severe discomfort and life-threatening effects.

Some medical experts believe the type of surgical connection used in the mini gastric bypass procedure can cause biliary reflux gastritis and other complications, in addition to the complications that are common to other gastric bypass procedures.

The procedure resembles the Billroth II procedure, a surgical treatment for stomach cancer, which is no longer used because of safety concerns.

Studies have shown that the risks associated with gastric bypass surgery can be reduced (but not eliminated), by having your surgery performed at a fully approved ASBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence (BSCOE). However, it will not be possible to find a Center of Excellence willing to offer the mini gastric bypass because of its poor safety record.

During a search on the Internet to find surgeons who perform this procedure, this author could find only one name - Dr Robert Rutledge of Henderson, Nevada. Dr Rutledge also contracts with surgeons in other states who perform the mini-bypass procedure on a fee-splitting arrangement with Dr. Rutledge.

Several press releases were found extolling the safety of the procedure, but these releases named Dr. Rutledge as the chief researcher. The Wall Street Journal published an article about this surgeon that questioned many of his safety claims.

If you go ahead with the decision to have a mini gastric bypass, be sure to research the surgeon's experience and safety record, and speak with the surgeon's former patients. Most obesity clinics are happy to supply names of people who will give references.

If you are considering the mini gastric bypass surgery because you don't want large scars, you might consider the Roux-en-Y or Lap-Band™ procedures instead. Both the gastric bypass and gastric banding surgeries can be done laparoscopically, which reduces the scarring and sometimes reduces the possibility of infection at the site of incision. The Center of Excellence near you will be able to perform these procedures. <bio>Learn more about mini gastric bypass, gastric bypass complications, and the cost of weight loss surgery at http://www.1gastricbypass.com </bio>

Typically, a gastric bypass surgery involves a 4- to 6-day hospital stay and 2 to 3 days for a laparoscopic approach. Most people can return to their normal activities within 3 to 5 weeks.

Gastric bypass surgeries may cause dumping syndrome. Dumping syndrome occurs when the small intestine fills too quickly with undigested food from the stomach, as can happen following gastric bypass surgery. This occurs when food moves too quickly through the stomach and intestines. It causes nausea, weakness, sweating, faintness, and possibly diarrhea soon after eating. These symptoms are made worse by eating highly refined, high-calorie foods (like sweets). In some cases you may become so weak that you have to lie down until the symptoms pass. After gastric bypass surgery, you will need to train yourself to chew your food thoroughly, eat slowly and not overeat.

Talk to your doctor about the exact level of risk gastric bypass surgery may pose for you. As with any major surgery, gastric bypass carries risks such as bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to the anesthesia. A risk of death has been associated with gastric bypass surgery. It's important to follow your doctor's directions in preparing for gastric bypass surgery. Bypass surgery in unresectable distal gastric cancer. However, it does not have any of the risks of nutritional deficits associated with gastric bypass surgery.

Risks common to all surgeries for weight loss include an infection in the incision, a leak from the stomach into the abdominal cavity or where the intestine is connected (resulting in an infection called peritonitis), and a blood clot in the lung (pulmonary embolism). About one-third of all people having surgery for obesity develop gallstones or a nutritional deficiency condition such as anemia or osteoporosis.

Most people who have gastric bypass surgery quickly begin to lose weight and continue to lose weight for up to 12 months. One study noted that people lost about one-third of their excess weight (the weight above what is considered healthy) in 1 to 4 years.1 Although some of the lost weight may be regained in time.

The laparoscopic approach showed similar results, with 69% to 82% of excess weight lost over 12 to 54 months. <bio>The most common surgery for obesity is Gastric Surgery. Doctor recommended diets are numerous and for some they work well, but for others, the long-term sustained weight loss doesn't occur. Behavior modification tends to be more effective, but then again, weight-regain is common when the patient doesn't abide by the learnt behavior. So, what is the answer? Well truthfully, there isn't any simple one answer to help cure obesity.

There is a more natural and less invasive surgical option to help cure obesity and to help those attain optimal health. For those patients who are severely obese, there is the gastric lap band procedure. This surgical procedure calls for a gastric band to be placed around the stomach, creating a smaller pouch.

Gastric Bypass vs. The Lap Band

The Gastric Bypass, sometimes referred to as the Roux en-Y Gastric Bypass, is the only bariatric procedure that appears to combine both volume restriction and malabsorption. In the procedure, the stomach is transected and separated from the stomach pouch. Generally, a stomach pouch the size of a grape is created, and the rest of the stomach is divided and separated. A portion of the small intestine, or bowel, is then attached to the pouch which allows the food to "bypass" the separated, larger portion of the stomach. This surgery typically requires 2--4 days in the hospital and 1--6 weeks of recovery. It is important to note that this a potentially dangerous surgery and can cost between $25,000 and $40,000, or more.

The Gastric Lap Band procedure is a simple laparoscopic surgery that is far less invasive than other bariatric procedures such as the Gastric Bypass and is fully reversible. Because it has no malabsorptive components, the Gastric Lap Band system induces weight loss solely through restriction of food intake. Lap Band patients generally experience a healthy, gradual weight loss of approximately 1-2 pounds per week over the first year, and up to 40-60% of their total excess body weight within the first few years. <bio>Sanoviv provides alternative and complementary health care, obesity surgery, lap band surgery, bariatric surgery and more with advanced diagnostics and holistic procedures.
You've been through endless diet regimes, exercised regularly, and sometimes even gone overboard in the hope of losing weight=85and you are still 100 pounds overweight! Maybe it's time to consider Gastric Bypass Surgery, which is a surgery that limits the amount of food you can take in.

Gastric bypass surgery is a surgical procedure to treat extreme obesity, caused by severe accumulation of excess weight as fatty tissue, which causes other health problems too. As part of the surgery, the stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and a much larger, lower remaining pouch. Furthermore, the small intestines are also re-arranged to allow both pouches to remain connected to the intestines. In this way, the food intake decreases and the amount of food you can digest is also restricted.

There are two types of surgery. One is called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass which is the most common bypass procedure performed. By this, a small stomach pouch is created by stapling part of the stomach together; limiting the amount of food you can eat. Next, a section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow the food to bypass into the duodenum. This causes reduced calorie and nutrient absorption.

The second type is called Extensive Gastric Bypass, which is more complicated, as the lower portion of the stomach is removed. The remaining small pouch is connected directly to the segment of the small intestine. While this procedure is very effective in promoting weight loss, it is less used because of the high risk for nutritional deficiencies.

People who have gastric bypass operations have been known to lose around two thirds of their excess weight within two years. However, there are several risks such as having the stomach getting bigger over time and then reverting to its original size before surgery. Sometimes the staples that are used to tighten the stomach can break and reverse the procedure. Additionally, there can also be a leakage of the stomach contents into the abdomen. This is dangerous because the acid can eat away at other organs. Nutritional deficiencies can also cause further health problems such as anemia, osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases; a result of limited absorption of vitamin B12, calcium and iron, and people then have to take nutritional supplements to prevent these deficiencies.

The risk of complications and nutritional deficiencies depends on how extensive the bypass operation is, and requires close monitoring and lifelong use of special foods and medications.

In some cases, post-operative symptoms could include nausea, fainting, weakness, sweating and sometimes diarrhea. Gallstones can also occur as a result of rapid weight loss, although they can be treated with medication.

While weight reduction surgery doesn't guarantee that you will lose all your excess weight or keep it off long-term, a lot depends on your commitment to making life long changes to your eating and exercise habits. However, your weight loss accomplishment and improved overall health are significant benefits, and will definitely be worth the effort. <bio>Further information about Gastric Bypass Surgery can be found at: http://www.gastric-bypass-notes.info/ and http://www.ultimate-gastric-bypass.info/ </bio>

Gastric bypass surgery is a common form of weight loss surgery that results in outstanding weight loss with minimal side effects. But once you undergo the gastric bypass surgery procedure you have to accept lifelong changes in your diet. The post-diet of gastric bypass surgery includes an adequate intake of protein, taking vitamin and mineral supplements including multivitamin, iron and calcium, B12 and avoiding sweets and fatty foods.

Types of gastric bypass surgery

In gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon takes off a large portion of the stomach leaving behind a tiny pouch. It is this small pouch that prevents overdose of eating as it can take very less amount of food. Moreover, with large parts of your stomach and small intestine bypassed, most of the nutrients and calories in the food do not get absorbed at all. This helps the person from gaining excess weight.

There are several types of bypass surgery operations. They are:

§Roux-en-Y gastric bypass [RGB] -- this is a common surgery where a small stomach pouch is created by stapling part of the stomach together or by vertical banding. This reduces the amount of food to be taken. Then a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the duodenum as well as the first portion of jejunum. This causes reduced calorie and rapid nutrient absorption.

§Extensive gastric bypass [biliopancreatic diversion] -- in this complicated surgery, the lower portion of the stomach is removed. The small pouch that remains connected to the final segment of the small intestine completely bypasses both duodenum and jejunum.

People who undergo gastric bypass surgery always lose two-thirds of their excess weight within two years.

Risks of gastric bypass surgery

Gastric bypass surgery causes "dumping syndromes" where the stomach contents move too rapidly through the small intestine. The usual symptoms of gastric bypass surgeries include weakness, sweating, fainting, nausea, diarrhea, as well as inability to eat sweets.

People who undergo this procedure are at risk of:

§Band erosion -- the band closing off part of the stomach disintegrates

§Pouch stretching -- stomach gets bigger overtime, stretching back to its normal size before surgery

§Leakage of stomach contents into the abdomen [acid can eat away other organs]

§Nutritional deficiencies causing health problems

§Breakdown of staple lines -- band and staple fall apart, reversing procedure

Gastric bypass diet

Gastric bypass diet helps the patients to drop 50% to 90% of their overall excess fats. The diet is designed to bring about significant weight loss. It basically includes foods that are high in protein and low in fat, fiber, calories, and sugar. You should have lots of vitamins and minerals. Iron, vitamin, folate and calcium are the best nutrients for patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery.

You can undergo gastric bypass surgery only if you have been obese for at least 5 years, do not have a history of alcohol abuse, and do not possess untreated depression and range between the ages 18 to 65. <bio>Author Barney Garcia is a proud contributing author and enjoys writing about many different topics.
While the old fashioned route to weight loss will include the use of strict diets and exercise there is another method which is available for people who are morbidly obese. This route is called weight reduction surgery. There are many different surgical procedures which fall under this umbrella. You will find that one of these is called mini gastric bypass surgery.

Of the many different weight reduction surgeries that are possible you will find that mini gastric bypass surgery is considered as being one of the better ones to have. The reason for this is because of the least amount of surgical invasion which occurs. This statement simply means that instead of having a large cut performed on the stomach the surgeon will make a small incision.

With the aid of an instrument called a laparoscope the surgeon will see where the mini gastric bypass surgery needs to be performed. The laparoscope will show via the attached camera the walls of the stomach. This allows the surgeon to staple the entire stomach into the shape of a narrow tube. This tubular stomach is then attached to a part of the small intestines.

In order to make the mini gastric bypass surgery more effective the tubular stomach is attached to the small intestines about six feet from the original starting point. This allows the stomach to bypass the part of the small intestine where usually most of the food is digested and absorbed into the body.

The theory behind the mini gastric bypass surgery is that by creating a smaller space for food you have the ability of reducing your weight. The added benefit of the stomach being placed six feet from the starting point of the small intestines is that most of the calories and fats will not become absorbed into your system.

The other benefits which can be found with having a mini gastric bypass surgery performed is that it is less expensive than the traditional weight reduction surgeries. Besides this you will find that a mini gastric bypass also provides you with the opportunity of having this operation reversed if it is necessary.

In general the entire mini gastric bypass procedure will take about 30 minutes. The time that you need to spend recovering from the surgery in hospital is about 24 hours. These are some of the benefits which patients of mini gastric bypass surgery experience. It is for these reasons mainly that mini gastric bypass surgeries are now becoming the favorite option for weight reduction surgery. <bio>Author's Sites: http://www.easyhomeremedy.com/pregnancy_weight_loss/index.html , http://www.easyhomeremedy.com/home_remedy_for_vaginal_infections.html </bio>

Deciding the type of Bariatric surgery to have and choosing amongst the many obesity doctors available, can be a daunting task. Bariatric surgery options include the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery and the Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, also known as the Lap Band. The latter surgery (Lap Band) has only just recently (since June of 2001) been approved to be performed here in the United States, and thus, not too many obesity doctors in the U.S. are familiar with it.

Although still new to the United States obesity doctors, the Lap Band procedure is well known to many doctors in Mexico and Europe. This procedure is the least invasive of the bariatric surgeries and poses less risk and complications. It doesn't involve any stapling or cutting and is performed as a laparoscopic procedure.

Unlike the Gastric Bypass and other weight loss surgeries, the Lap Band system does not involve any cutting or stapling of your stomach. The end results are less pain, less of a hospital stay and fewer risks and side effects. With the Lap Band you are at a low risk of nutritional deficiencies, compared to the Gastric Bypass and other procedures. It is the only obesity stomach surgery that is fully reversible and it is adjustable to allow for individualized restriction for long-term sustained weight loss.

Choosing Amongst The Obesity Doctors

Choosing an Obesity Surgery doctor is a very important decision. This person is the one who will help provide guidance as to what type of medical treatment you need. It is therefore important to select a doctor who is qualified and who will meet your needs. There are various important factors to consider when selecting a doctor such as expertise in procedures and medical philosophies that shouldn't be ignored.

As mentioned, many doctors in the United States aren't as familiar with the less invasive Laparoscopy procedure of the Lap Band. This should cause you some hesitation when choosing to have such a procedure performed by a doctor in the United States. You may be better off choosing one that has expertise in the procedure and is known to have performed it regularly with success. <bio>Sanoviv provides alternative and complementary health care, obesity surgery, lap band surgery, bariatric surgery and more with advanced diagnostics and holistic procedures.
Cosmetic weight loss plastic surgery or bariatric surgery is fast gaining popularity because increasing affluence and knowledge of using surgery as a form of targetted or fast weight loss.

Patients may opt for a weight loss plastic surgery out of reshaping their body shape or simply to improve their health and escape from severe obesity.

There are basically three basic types of weight loss plastic surgery :-

There are the restrictive surgical procedures like the lap band surgery to make the stomach smaller and thus limiting food consumption.

Then there are the malabsorptive surgeries to shorten the intestine that comes in contact with food so that the body absorbs less calories from the food consumed.

Finally, there are surgeries that combine both restrictive and malasorptive plastic surgeries.

Restrictive surgeries encourage easy weight loss in two ways. First, the surgeries reduce the amount of food consumed. The stomach is shrunk by creating a small pouch at the top of where food enters and therefore less food is consumed by the patients. Restrictive surgery also make patients feel full longer because the lower outlet of the pouch is made smaller so that food empties slowly. Lap band cosmetic weight loss surgery and Vertical banded gastroplasty are examples of restrictive surgeries.

Gastric bypass surgery is a combination both the restrictive and the malabsorptive surgery. This surgery is done by creating a small stomach pouch to restrict the amount of food intake. Then a bypass of the duodenum and other parts of the intestine is constructed to cause malabsorption. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and Distal Gastric Bypass are examples of the gastric bypass weight loss plastic surgery.

What are the risks of weight loss surgeries?

Health risks are almost the same for both restrictive and gastric bypass surgeries although the risk of nutritional deficiencies for calcium, Vitamin B12 and iron are higherin gastric bypass surgery patients. Intestinal leaking may also occur.

Gastric bypass surgery patients may experienced the andquot;Dumping Syndrome.andquot; This is when food moves too fast through the small intestine and the patient may experience nausea, cold sweat, dizzy and fainting spells, weakness and occasionally, even diarrhea.

Patients can opt for the either the traditional open surgery or laparoscopic sugery the latter being that there will be smaller scars as well as less down time since the bariatric weight loss surgery patient can recover faster.

As with any form of surgeries, patients must ask their surgeons which for of cosmetic surgery is best suited for them. Before a patient is committed to undergo a surgery, he must have tried other healthy means to lose weight. A weight loss surgery should always be the last option when all other efforts failed to help the patient to reduce weight. <bio>Chris Chew is the author of andquot;Burn Fat Build Muscles Fastandquot;.
