Unfortunately, as long as you are working on a symptom it will be difficult to get your prospect to identify whether or not they are someone you can do business with. Right now, you have deals in process that may be stalled because you are working on the "symptom" and not the "problem". <br /><br /> The following example will help you understand this concept: <br /><br /> Symptom: "We <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/need+more+time" rel="tag">need more time</a> to think this through". Most salespeople, thinking the problem is they need more time,  respond with "when should we get back to you? "This response addresses the symptom... Not the problem. <br /><br /> Problem: The "symptom" need more time is driven by the problem which is: they are not 100% convinced that they need or can benefit from what you have. Letting the prospect have more time is the strategy that deals with the symptom and not the problem. The reality is they usually don't need more time but rather more information. <br /><br /> Needing more time can also be driven by one of these problems: <br /><br /> They are not the real decision maker and can't say yes.  They don't feel like what you have proposed is the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/right+solution" rel="tag">right solution</a>.  They are not good at selling internally to their people and can't justify the purchase.  They can't go to their current vendor and tell him he's been replaced.  They don't have a compelling reason to make a change <br /><br /> A <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/typical+sales" rel="tag">typical sales</a> response like "why do you <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/hesitate" rel="tag">hesitate</a>?" will often put pressure on your prospect. A better response that will help you get to the real problem might be "maybe you shouldn't do this at all?" <br /><br /> This "negative psychology" response keeps you from sounding like a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/sales+person" rel="tag">sales person</a> and is contrary to what they are expecting. It also tends to take the pressure away. Now they might actually reveal the problem by saying... <br /><br /> "Yes, we've decided not to buy...  Or,  "We're just not sure it's the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/right+decision" rel="tag">right decision</a> for us." <br /><br /> Either one is O.K., because now we can decide how best to proceed. Finding the real problems will give you the ability to move forward in the selling process so don't be afraid of getting an answer you think you don't want. <br /><br /> Some other examples of symptoms vs. problems are: <br /><br /> "Your price is too high" is the symptom not the problem.  The problem is your prospect "doesn't believe you are worth what you are asking". <br /><br /> "Timing is not right" is the symptom not the problem.  "I don't have the belief that I pay a penalty not to buy from you" is the problem behind the symptom.  "My people want to wait on this" is the symptom not the problem.  "I didn't have the conviction when I presented it to our people to get their buy in" is the problem. <br /><br /> Don't be fooled into dealing with symptoms=85 as a sales professional take the responsibility to insure that you are both working on the problem. You can't help your prospect by working on the symptom! <br /><br /> Action Step: Identify what some of the "symptoms" are that trap you and what are the underlying problems that you need to ask about? Learn to ask for "clarification" of what appear to be symptoms rather than trying to fix what really isn't the problem!   <bio>John E. This is by no means an "end all" resource. My hope is that I'm able to give you some direct mail tips and ideas that you can use now as a starting point to develop your own strategy. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/direct+mail+advertising" rel="tag">Direct mail advertising</a> can be pretty expensive, so it's best you know the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ins" rel="tag">ins</a> and outs of it before you start. <br /><br /> My first of several direct marketing tips... It typically takes anywhere from three to five <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/mail+pieces" rel="tag">mail pieces</a> before you get any kind of response, and sometimes it takes even more exposure. For an optimal response rate, it's best that you use a highly targeted direct mail advertising list. <br /><br /> To acquire a nice, highly targeted direct <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/mail+list" rel="tag">mail list</a>, rent one that has some commonalities, such as the same industry, occupation, people in certain age rages, demographics, etc... <br /><br /> Once you have that list, write a headline that can connect with the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/target+audience" rel="tag">target audience</a>, one that will hit their hot buttons. If you write up a pretty good headline, mailing out to a solid list, there's not reason that you can't do better than the standard one percent response. Why would you want to mail out your offer to an audience that does not want it. They are not used too often by larger businesses and when you do find one, save it. They know what they're doing. It's an excellent way to reach out to your customers and clients at a fraction of the cost. It's cheaper to reproduce and mail out postcards, and it's especially <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/beneficial" rel="tag">beneficial</a> when you can post all your content on one side and have a nice picture. I love this because the prospect or client will be forced to read your message. <br /><br /> Moving on with the direct mail tips... you should set up a system to track and measure all mailings you send out. You want to test the headline, offer, price, envelope, day of the week you're mailing, etc. Once you find a number that you're happy with, you can continue until you see the numbers dwindle, or try to beat it by testing even more. <br /><br /> Next, you should be using a two step process. Get your audience to first let you know that they are interested, then it will be much easier to market to them, as opposed to marketing to a cold list. Here's one of the most powerful of all direct mail tips, when it comes to writing your sales offer... you're going to want to use a deadline. It forces people to take action, instead of having them wait days, weeks or months, if ever to respond to your offer. <br /><br /> Start small, then work your way up. Test 500 to 1000 pieces first, adjust and track your numbers. The bottom line here, direct response advertising can be an effective tool, you must know how to use it. Maximize your return by testing and comparing your data, always trying to reach for the highest response. In spite of a sensible plan and good intentions, most people find themselves off course by March. Imagine if you could uncover the cause, stay the course, and get what you really want. The answer lies in having a solid starting point=85a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/strategic+plan" rel="tag">strategic plan</a> that really works. <br /><br /> Every year, we meet thousand of decision makers around the country in our consulting and speaking work. Like you, they're smart, ambitious, and they're doing a decent job. But, they're also often frustrated that they aren't doing better. When we break down the element for them, we find that few if any of them have a good strategic plan they can work from. In fact, most of them don't even know how to create one. <br /><br /> The following is a mini lesson in strategic planning. We don't have a lot of space, but here are some important things to know when creating a basic plan. <br /><br /> 1. Know the difference between a strategy and a tactic. Strategy is the plan that defines where you're going. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/tactics" rel="tag">Tactics</a> are the things you do and use to get to the destination. Sounds simple, right? Specific statement: We will improve <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/customer+service+response" rel="tag">customer service response</a> time will drop 29%.  Can you see how a few words change the way you might approach a challenge or opportunity? <br /><br /> 3. Engage the aging process. Like great wine, the making of a strategic plan takes time. A strategic plan is NOT built during a weekend retreat! It evolves out of thoughts, research, information, and experiences. Spend some real time developing a strategy so that it's the right one for your organization. Not having a strategy is hard on a firm. But having the wrong strategy, because you just threw one together, can be disastrous. On the flip side, don't let the time frame hinder you from doing something, at least. It's better to have some type of plan to follow, even if it isn't exactly what you want it to be today. <br /><br /> 4. Keep it simple. You can still be thorough without running yourself through the mill. Use the A-B-C approach: <br /><br /> A. Establish what you want to achieve: STRATEGY.  B. List available, realistic ways to make it happen: TACTICS  C. Select options that give the highest rewards for the lowest output: IMPLEMENTATION. <br /><br /> 5. Follow the plan. Most plans are developed, and then put on a shelf. When (or if) they're finally taken off the shelf for referral, you usually have to blow the dust off them. Not good. Senior management is guiltiest of not following the plan. A CEO should be able to clear everything off his desk and follow the plan daily if the plan is complete. He shouldn't think it is meant for everyone but himself. Think of the strategic plan as the road map you and your organization use to follow your intended path. If you were to drive from California to New York, you would use a map of some sort. You'd refer to it to make sure you took all the turns and exits you need to follow the right roads, prevent getting lost, and get where you want to be. The same with the corporate map.  6.Be flexible. If, during the course of the year, you find that the plan needs some tweaking, you can certainly modify it. Be careful not to switch directions too often, as this will discredit you and your plan in the eyes of its followers. But, make sure that the plan is working in the best interests of the organization, even if that requires a sensible, justifiable change here and there. <br /><br /> Using these tips alone, you should be able to develop a stronger strategic plan=85one that will endure through the unexpected trials that arise through the year, also. The <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/job" rel="tag">job</a> was an easy one. It was to announce the opening of a gorgeous new, upscale, very expensive hotel. Easy, right? <br /><br /> Keep in mind that I was just brought on for this job, so I did not have much experience if any with the company that I was dealing with. So I was ready to conform to their rules and see how I can fit it. What was I going to bring to the table? I was going to apply my basic knowledge of direct response marketing techniques by the book. <br /><br /> So I started out using a standard letter in a standard windowed envelope, and I was ready to get it out. I was also hoping and ready to do a lot more because the hotel deserved a better <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/launch" rel="tag">launch</a>, or at least that's how I personally felt. A hotel as nice as this needed to be introduced to the new people who would stay inside it's beautiful luxurious walls. And sleep on its amazing beds looking out over the Pacific Ocean. <br /><br /> I was hoping for people to experience the "experience" of this hotel through my sales offer, and I was not too convinced that a standard letter in a windowed envelope would convey that message I was hoping. <br /><br /> So what did I do? I did what I always tell others to do, I took care of the project as they wanted me to, then I did what I felt would be best. I showed them the ideas that I had with the envelope and the standard letter, the serif type, but then I took it a step further. <br /><br /> I showed them something that I thought was worthy of that amazing hotel. It was a multifold, full color, bleed brochure that looked amazing, because it was exactly what the hotel felt like, inside and out. Rather than try and sell this hotel in words, I did so in pictures, capturing the grandeur of the hotel. Now, I'm not saying I'm a genius, but this direct response marketing technique really worked! <br /><br /> So what was the result of going against the grain so to speak? It was a staggering success. So looking back, yes, your direct response marketing techniques should be anything but direct! <br /><br /> So what did I learn out of all this?
