Software engineering, known as SE, is the development, design, maintenance and documentation of software by applying practices and various technologies from fields such as computer science, engineering, application domains, project management, digital asset management and interface design.

The conception, development and verification of a software system is what software engineering is all about. It is necessary to identify, define, realize and verify the resultant software's required characteristics. Necessary testing is required for attributes such as reliability, functionality, testability, maintainability, ease of use, availability and portability. In software engineering, software can be verified to meet these requirements by having design and technical specifications prepared and implemented correctly. The characteristics of the software development process are also important in software engineering. Development itself, development duration and risks in software development are examples of such characteristics.

A computer uses software as part of its system that allows the hardware to operate properly. Software can be system software or application software. System software includes the main operating system and a variety of other utilities that enable the computer and its applications to run. Application software includes the computer programs and relevant documentation responsible for end-user data processing tasks. This kind of software is developed for such tasks as word processing, payroll, inventory and production control.

Software Development

A series of processes undertaken systematically to improve a business through using computerized information systems is what is known as software development. There are two major components to software development, which are systems analysis and design.

Systems analysis is the specification of what exactly the system is required to do, or the main objective. Design is about how to make the system do what is required of it. For system analysis, it is required to study the current system by certain procedures in order to gather and interpret data and facts, identify any problems and use this data to improve the system currently in use. System design refers to the process of developing a new system, concentrating heavily on the technical specifications and other specifications that make the system operations.

Software Development Life Cycle

Software Development Life Cycle, or SDLC, is a sequence of events done by designers, analysts and users to develop and execute an information system. There are a number of stages to this practice, which can overlap. The stages are Preliminary investigation (which is feasibility study), Determination of system requirements (which is analysis), Design of system, Development of software, System testing, System Implementation and System Maintenance in that order. <bio>Visit the Software Management Institute, an association and resource for software professionals: http://www.softwaremanagementinstitute.com </bio>

Engineering is a great career choice for many. With 1.4 million engineering jobs in the U.S. alone, it's no wonder this career field is a popular one. Let's take a look at a few reasons why engineering is such a hot and rewarding career.

Challenging Work

Engineers get to combine their creativity, mathematics and science background with technology in order to help solve everyday problems. They get to work on the design and development of new products, help with their production, monitoring, maintenance and testing.

In alphabetical order, the main engineering specializations are: aerospace, agricultural, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, electronics, environmental, health and safety, industrial, marine, materials, mechanical, mining and geological, nuclear and petroleum.

Career Tidbits

The following list includes some interesting information about this career field according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook:

- Engineers generally work 40 hours per week, but the workload may increase under tight deadlines. Daily engineering tasks often involve work outside the desk space including lab research, field work, exploration and construction sites, monitoring stations and more.

- Engineers need to continue their educations to keep on top of the latest research and technological changes. Some companies offer funding for this. Not staying on top of the changes can mean the difference between maintaining employment and being laid off.

- The Internet has opened the doors for telecommuters (who may often come aboard for less money via long-distance arrangements), but local engineers are still in demand. Engineers often work on-site teaming up with others and their support staff.

- In 2004, engineers with higher degrees (Master's and PhD's) earned more. And for specialty engineers, workers earned well into the 6-figure ranges.

- Rapid growth in the technology sector means companies must seek the means to stay ahead of competitors with product and technology development, testing, and monitoring. Therefore, engineers are in demand and will be for some time to come. <bio>So check into career opportunities in your area and see what rewards you can reap as an engineer!
Civil engineering is among the oldest branches of the vast field of engineering. Civil engineers create, construct, and maintain all types of public systems and structures, and are literally the backbone of any city or town. Civil engineers are often responsible for any of the following tasks: design and/or construction of road systems, municipal buildings and centers, airports, as well as water supply and sewage systems that include tunnels, bridges, dams, and filtration structures. The general field of civil engineering is an umbrella under which there are many sub-fields, including structural engineering, building construction, environmental engineering, transportation, and geotechnical engineering (soil and rock mechanics). If you are currently working as a Civil Engineer, you know that there are a variety of jobs available within the discipline. And if you have a graduate degree in Civil Engineering, you know that the career prospects are even broader. It has never been easier to earn a Master's degree in Civil Engineering. Online programs offer a great deal of convenience and flexibility. By earning your Civil Engineering Master's degree online, you give yourself the chance to expand and develop your knowledge and scope of the field, and thus broaden your career possibilities.

Civil Engineers often find employment near cities that house major industrial and/or commercial hubs. In areas such as these, engineers are needed to design and build safe transportation systems, water and sewage systems, as well as maintain, repair, or replace current roads and municipal construction (bridges, tunnels, etc). Because employment opportunities within the field of Civil Engineering depend on the geographic area and need for specific work, it is important to be as competitive a candidate as possible when looking for employment. Earning an online graduate degree in Civil Engineering will give you an edge, even if you are currently employed in the field. The career opportunities are seemingly limitless in the field. A Civil Engineer can hold a managerial post, ranging from construction site manager working out in the field to a city engineer designing and implementing roads and structures on computer-based interfaces. There are also many types of support positions available for a Civil Engineer, including working as a designer, conducting research to further scientific knowledge and design methods in the field, and, of course, teaching. Many of the higher-ranking (and higher-paying) positions in the field of Civil Engineering are made available to those who hold a Master's degree or higher.

If you are considering earning a graduate degree in Civil Engineering, consider enrolling in an online program. There are a number of good reasons to do so. Number one is convenience. You can continue working your regular work schedule and earn you degree simultaneously. Many online programs offer lectures via streaming video that you can watch at any time on your computer, from home or at work. And all of your assignments can be submitted to your professors using your email. With the convenience of online learning also comes flexibility. Because you can fit your class time into your schedule, you don't have to sacrifice family commitments or leisure time. Earning your Civil Engineering degree online is an almost ideal way to achieve your highest career aspirations.

Many online graduate degree programs in Civil Engineering are specifically designed for the working Civil Engineering professional. They are offered through fully accredited Universities, and the programs are planned around the most current recommendations of the ASCE (the American Society of Civil Engineers). Among the degrees that can be earned are a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Construction Engineering or Structural Engineering. There are also programs available that emphasize the technological side of the field, providing instruction to those who are more inclined to do design work on a computer. Whatever you decide to do, you can often develop your own study strategy within a field of specialization that is related to your current occupation.

When you decide that you want and need a graduate degree in Civil Engineering, you must consider earning it online. The approach to continuing your education is convenient, it is adaptable, and it is simply the most current way to advance your career. Having a Master's degree brings with it not only the professional development, but also a sense of accomplishment, and the testimony to current and future employers that you are resolute in being the best Civil Engineer that you can be. <bio>Mark is a director of 3 Internet Companies, is a published author and has written many articles on a widespread number of topics.
The top money making majors vary every year. These majors though most of the times are the hardest to complete, are usually the most rewarding at the end. I just looked up these statistics because I was curious about my major which is economics. Here I will compile a list of the top college majors to make money; I will then list the types of jobs you can get with that major.

1.)Any type of engineering. This includes Chemical Engineering ($55,900), Electrical Engineering ($52,899), Mechanical Engineering ($50,672), and civil engineering ($45,000). These majors are usually the hardest to complete due to massive homework and projects. They require a lot of mathematical skills which I don't possess, and many other people don't. It is not for everybody. The amounts of jobs you can acquire with this are pretty absurd. The employment growth for the majority of engineering jobs is moving at a pace faster than most occupations. The jobs for these majors include: Designing anything from bridges to skyscrapers, to creating medical advancements and much, much more, just google it.

2.)Computer Science ($50,046)- With the endless growth potential of computers and the internet, computer science skills are very important, and because of this, people who have skills in this are paid very well. Believe me when I say, I've tried to program on my website and it is pretty impossible for an average joe like me. I tried to outsource some of my work but it would cost a ton. The work load is a ton for this major, but if you are a fan of computers and believe in the future growth of computers and the internet, then this major is for you. Jobs for this major include: Database manager, Systems analyst, Applications programmer, Computer programmer.

3.)Accounting ($45,723) - If you like numbers, this is for you. As for me, I like numbers, but only on my pay checks. This major can be EXTREMELY boring, but it could be worth it for your post college opportunities. I always assume people are lazy, and people will remain lazy and don't have the knowledge to do their taxes, accountants will always be in great demand. This job has after than average growth. These jobs include: Management accountants, Government accountants, Public accountants, Auditors

4.)Economics/Finance($45,200)- Finally, we get to my major Economics. Let me tell you about Econ. It can be fun, I mean if you are a complete loser like me. With economics you can analyze anything from tacos with computers to clowns and dynamite. It can be very interesting. But on the other hand, with the wrong professor you can have an awfully boring time. If you have an interest in this major, I recommend reading the book "Freakonomics". This book really opened up my mind to economics. Job growth is very strong for finance and economics. These jobs include: Economists in government, business, academic fields.

More majors you can choose: Business Administration-$40,000, Marketing $37,500, and Liberal Arts at roughly $31,000<bio>Visit Campusbathrooms.com - College Resource for Bathroom Reviews</bio>

There are many changes coming about in the oil and gas industry as a direct result of this constant demand, with new means of sourcing oil and gas being looked at every day on a global perspective. The increased demand and the limited supply of both these fuels means the oil and gas industry has many difficult challenges ahead in the next decade and beyond, making it a very interesting sector to break into.

Oil and gas jobs represent a huge part of the job market in the UK, with positions ranging from customer-facing roles in public relations to commissioning jobs and project management jobs in the global arena. Ensuring a safe supply to those countries dependent on oil and gas for their economic prosperity is a difficult challenge the oil and gas industry has to face up to with depleting supplies and more countries becoming more dependent every day. Perhaps unsurprisingly this has led to a greater number of project management jobs in smaller countries where the emphasis is on working with the people and securing their future in terms of cleaner and sustainable fuel production.

Whatever your discipline, from engineering to geology and exploration engineering, there is a position within the oil and gas industry to accommodate your skills. Most oil and gas jobs will require a basic understanding of the challenges faced by the industry today and some will form a platform for the beginnings of solutions to those problems. Becoming part of the solution to a global problem is the toughest challenge the industry has ever had to face is what makes starting a new career in the oil and gas industry appealing to many.

Providing an oil and gas supply to consumers throughout the world may involve a great deal of traveling to ensure supply is reliable and clean. Depending on your role, it could also involve working in harsh environments such as drilling jobs offshore in the North Sea to supplying energy onshore to meet the high demands of the UK alone.

The main areas of work within the oil and gas industry are:

Exploration drilling and production
Construction jobs and fabrication
Engineering and research
Installation piping jobs and maintenance jobs
Equipment supply

Each of these areas has a wealth of positions available. Having a degree in your chosen area of work within this industry will of course stand you in the best stead as so many vocational degrees involve practical training and experience. Whether you're looking for a project engineering job or a mechanical job, a background in engineering will stand you in good stead in the oil and gas industry and give employers the confidence that you are able to meet the needs of this global sector. However, even without an engineering or related qualification, there are now many ways to enter into the oil or gas sector than ever before, and those with people management skills are as welcome as those who have previously been involved with installation and piping jobs in unrelated industries.

Working towards alternative solutions for the replacement of fossil resources, sourcing cleaner energy production methods which respond to climate change and finding methods of extraction which are secure and respect the area being mined are all aspects of the nature of the industry.
As with any parent of a student aspiring to become a good engineer, even I was worried. Especially with so many options available to complete the graduation from and so many entrances to face it was ever more important for the students to make the right choices. IIT-JEE was and still is the most precious engineering entrance that any aspiring student would want to get through. It's easier said than done.

When my son decided to appear for the IIT-JEE all I could think of was the extra hard work he would have to put in to succeed in it. I was pondering about how to ease his efforts. I was determined to make a contribution towards his future and ambition. I researched a lot through all available sources.

There were many tutorials giving good training to appear for the IIT-JEE but what I was looking for was the best one among them. Being from a remote location away from the big cities it was going to be a tough ask. Then, one fine day I received information from a friend about askiitians.com. A little visit to their site caught my interest and I decided to discuss it with my son.

This was a subsidiary firm of TransWeb Educational services Pvt. Ltd, providing all kinds of educational services. What interested me most was that the methodologies of teaching were online-interactive-realtime learning sessions, problem solving sessions and strategy sessions. This meant all I required was good internet connectivity. There was no hassle of traveling to far away cities for my son. He could get the tuition at home. Even my son seemed to like the idea. And we decided to get him enrolled on askiitians.com.

I believe it was one of the most intelligent decisions of my life. While other tutorials have a few ex-IITians involved in the teaching process at askiitians.com all the instructors were ex-IITians. This meant the quality of guidance received by my son was the best available. He too was showing a lot of interest in the way of teaching. I could see improvement in his performance as well as his confidence about taking on the IIT-JEE. They were not only preparing him for the IIT-JEE but also for other engineering entrances.

They are offering various courses and you can choose the one suitable for your children. I am glad I decided to get my son tutored by askiitians.com. The counseling sessions are not only useful for the aspiring student but also for the parents as it gives a good idea about what to expect and how to prepare you for what is expected. The people giving the counseling are the one's who have been there and done that so whatever counseling you get is the right one.

With the help of askiitians.com and the hard work my son put in today he is completing his engineering from an IIT. I don't think it would have been possible, without askiitians, for my son to prepare properly and succeed in IIT-JEE. Not only did he succeed in IIT-JEE but in every engineering entrance exam that he appeared for. Askiitians.com has been a boon in my life.<bio>Devraj Sinha, Parent For more information about IIT-JEE coaching, please visit http://www.askiitians.com </bio>

One of my friends, a former community college student at the school at the same time I was working there, has decided to go into biotech research. She is technologically confident and at the same time is fascinated with and good at working with the environment, and hopes to make some important contributions to our area (Northern California). So what does it mean to do biotech research? What does it take to get into the field of biotechnology? And how much dough can you make?

Biotech research can involve anything in the life sciences, from 'human health and computational disease mapping to crop and tree improvements,' as those studies are done by students at the Biotech Research Center at Michigan Tech, from 'forensics, [the] testing of biotoxins, and management of the nation's organ transplantation process' to 'drug development, medical diagnostics, biomedical engineering, and environmental analysis,' such as those done at Virginia Biotechnology Research Park, or from biogenetic engineering, farming, or nutritional assessment and engineering to toxicology, biomedical imaging and engineering, or food, drug, and environmental technologies, as conducted by University of California Biotechnology Research and Education Program (UC BREP).

How much a person in biotech research makes depends on what funding the biotech research facilities are backed by. At the Biotech Research Center at Michigan Tech, for instance, funding is at $8.3 million, provided by such organizations as the U.S.Department of Energy (DOE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Health (NIH), and the U.S. Drug Administration (USDA).

At the same time, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the biotech research engineers (as well as the biomedical engineer) make an average of $48,503 with a bachelor's degree and around $59,667 with a master's degree.

But will the jobs in biotech research be there when my friend and you finish your degrees. Well, again according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the projection for job growth in the field of biotech research in particular but biotechnological engineering in general looks good through 2014, with the growth 'much faster than average.

This, BLS declares, will be attributed to the aging of the population, the increased focus on health issues, and the demand for 'better medical biomedical engineers.' Because of the sensitive interest in biotech research and biomedicine, more degrees are granted in these fields or area sand hopefully, more grants are awarded. <bio>Luke T. The name doesn't quite make it clear what the invention was, but if you haven't already guessed it, it was an engine. This engine was designed to be put to use in rural areas and was powered by a four-cylinder water-cooled engine and could be hooked up to a 120v DC current, a great asset to farmers who lived away from the hustle and bustle of the booming cities.

While this first engine was a mild success, it wasn't until 1939 when Kohler really began to thrive by developing liquid-cooled diesel engines. These engines ranged from single cylinder to four-cylinder, and from 5hp to 20hp. Kohler products were a big part of the war effort against Germany and Japan, which led to huge profits from government contracts.

By 1948, Kohler was beginning to manufacture "stand alone" engines for industrial applications in their first ever engine factory. Three years later Kohler had manufactured the K90 cast iron single cylinder air-cooled engine. By the end of the 1950s Kohler had an entire line of engines, as well as interchangeable parts. There have been no limits for this company ever in its 80 year history.

The list of the engineering accomplishments of this company are many and could be turned into a novel, but suffice it to say that to this day Kohler is still engineering what they believe to be the strongest and most dependable engines in the business, and they also have many satisfied customers who will provide evidence of this fact. And as if this wasn't enough, Kohler also backs its engines with a full lifetime warranty and full after sale service, a practice they have used since their inception into the engineering world.

Kohler still manufacturers a wide variety of engine sizes for all type of uses today. You can find their products in lawn mowers and at construction sites powering generators and other equipment. The horsepower of their engines has not changed much in the company's history, ranging from 4hp to 30hp today. The engines also come in either air or liquid cooled designs and can meet the application needs of all customers.

Kohler is a company that forms lifelong bonds with its customers, and periodically updates its customers on what's new in the engineering world and what new products Kohler has come out with. Kohler understands that many people put their confidence and trust into their products, which in turn drives them to strive for excellence. <bio>Read more from Joe Goertz at: http://www.industrial-magazine.com </bio>

The story of Porsche could begin in 1950 with the introduction of the Porsche 356 to the United States by Max Hoffman. It could begin in 1948, when the first auto bearing the name of Porsche came out. However, to get a real grip on the heritage of Porsche, you must go back as far as 1875. In September of that year, Ferdinand Porsche was born in the bohemian village of Haffersdorf.

Ferdinand Porsche showed indications of his technical genius at the age of 18 when he wired the family home for electricity. His only formal education was received when he was a part-time engineering student in Vienna, although the title 'Doctor' is often appended to his name. By the time he was 25, Porsche had gone into automotive design. The Viennese firm of Loyner and Co. accepted his first car design. Over the next twenty years, he successfully associated himself with every major car manufacturer in Germany, and he designed about a dozen of the most technically important automobiles in history at the same time.

When he worked for Mercedes-Benz, he helped to create the SSK series, while for NSU, he designed the Auto Union Wandered and the Type 32, which as an ancestor of the Volkswagen Beetle. His disagreements with Mercedes-Benz over the company's engineering policies prompted him to establish his own engineering group, which became Porsche A.G. He collected a premier group of engineers to work under the name of "Doctor of Engineering Ferdinand Porsche, Inc. Construction Facility for Land, Air, and Sea Transportation" in Stuttgart. His son, Ferry, was one of his employees, and his major interest was in sport and racing cars.

The elder Porsche and his engineers were busy. They developed for Steyr, a luxury sedan in Austria, but this vehicle did not make it out of the prototype stage. They also worked for Auto Union, which is now Audi, the firm that created the Front, the first front-drive economy car in the world. They also created the mid-engine Grand Prix cars and supercharged V-12 and V-16 engines. These, along with the racers from Mercedes-Benz, dominated European auto racetracks for almost ten years.

The company created its most well-known designs for NSU and Zundapp. Prototypes were characterized by Porsche's torsion-bar suspension and rear-mounted engine. Neither of the firms manufactured the designs, so Porsche sold the idea to the German government. He then provided the oversight on the construction of a plant in Wolfsburg to build the design. He called it the Type 60, but the world knows it as the Volkswagen Beetle.

After World War II, the Porsche Company began to create the vehicles that now bear the name of Porsche. Almost one hundred years later, Porsche became the marque, and the family that developed the unique and lasting contributions to automotive design and engineering has gone down in history. <bio>For more articles of interest to men visit http://easy-men.com </bio>

When I was 29 years old, I started an information technology consulting firm. Our goal was to persuade Fortune 1000 companies to hire us to convert their information systems to Microsoft Windows. It was 1991, and there wasn't much Windows programming expertise in the marketplace.

In our first few months I made more than 500 cold calls, scheduling only 35 sales meetings. At each of those 35 meetings I was rejected. Yes, at every single one.

The frustrating part was that I was selling against Big Six consulting firms that had never done a full Windows implementation before. On these sales calls, I was competing against men in their 50s, men in suits, men representing companies that were considered "safe."

And there I was, in my 20s, a total nerd, fresh from Microsoft. I had worked on the Windows engineering team. I had years of relevant engineering experience, and my staff had even more. But the sales prospects chose the competition over us every time.

New Kids on the Block I kept hearing wishy-washy reasons as to why they wouldn't buy, such as "I need to check our budget" and "We haven't worked with your firm before." Actually, what they were really saying was, "You're not in your 50s, you don't have gray hair, you're not with a huge, well-known firm, and that makes us uncomfortable."

After the 35th failed meeting I told myself, enough already! It was time to evaluate what I was doing wrong. I asked myself: What does my business stand for? I knew the answer cold: We delivered the highest quality work possible on time and on budget, we provided outstanding customer care, and we had solid engineering expertise. I had made my brand clear to our earliest tech clients, but now it was time to make it clear to their larger counterparts as well as prospects in other industries.

I decided to stick around and spy on the successful guys after my most recent rejection. Positioning my car near the building's entryway, I sank down in my seat and hid behind a newspaper as they walked out. As they passed by my car, I lowered the newspaper and stared at them. What did they have that I didn't?

They had glasses. They had wedding bands. They had navy blue suits. Their look said: "Hire us and your head won't roll." My look said: "Want fries with that?" Could my sales challenge be as trivial as my looks? Could it be that the prospects simply couldn't get past this stumbling block?

Look the Part Sitting there in my car, I declared this stumbling block a stepping stone. I drove to the nearest mall and bought a fake wedding ring, non-prescription glasses, and a navy blue suit. Voil=E0! Now my look made potential customers feel comfortable.

When you're early in the game, trying to make it all happen, you have to realize that sometimes you just have to look the part to feel the part. It's just like declaring victory as you step onto the battlefield.

It's what we do as entrepreneurs: We act it until we are it. I had seen myself as a dweeby engineer. To take my company to the next level, I had to see myself as a CEO worthy of selling to the Fortune 1000. And I had to back this up with the right look.

Starting with the first firm that said yes after I looked the part, we went on to build a client base of 700 of the Fortune 1000. We went back to the companies who'd rejected us earlier and closed deals. When you come across stumbling blocks, resolve to turn them into stepping stones, whether in sales, financing, or management scenarios. <bio>Christine Comaford-Lynch is CEO of Mighty Ventures and author of Rules For Renegades: http://www.rulesforrenegades.com </bio>

OVERVIEW

People are visual creatures. They look at your product, and see, for example, a button or display. They want to find out about that control or indicator. A Visual Index is a simple but powerful document access tool that enables your Readers to find the information that they want.

This article describes the Visual Index concept and tells how to create one for your document.

A VISUAL INDEX

A Visual Index is a picture of your product or process with links to the relevant information in the related document. Using a Visual Index, your Readers can look at the picture, and quickly jump to the place in your document that describes the item of interest.

Your document may include several Visual Indexes (the plural of "index' is "indexes" not "indices").

STARTS WITH A PICTURE

The Visual Index starts with a picture of your product or process. There are various kinds of pictures to use, based on the product type:

* Physical Product (for example, a barbecue or video disk recorder) Pictures of the product (all relevant views).

* A Procedure or Process: A flowchart of the steps and decisions in the procedure or process.

* Software Product 1: Screenshots of the software.

* Software Product 2: Before and after images of the work that the product does.

* Organization: An organization chart.

LABEL THE PICTURE

Label all the User-Product Interaction Points (U-PIP) on the picture. A U-PIP is anywhere that your User and the product may interact. U-PIP's include controls, displays, and relevant physical features of the product (such as handles, latches, etc.). Provide a meaningful (to your Reader) label (name) for the U-PIP. (Use that same exact label everywhere you refer to that U-PIP.)

Aside: If your product uses sounds to inform the User, then include a table of those sounds, what they mean, and a link into the relevant area of your document (describing the sound).

LINK THE U-PIP's TO YOUR DOCUMENT

Up to this point, the Visual Index is just like any well-labeled picture of your product or process. However, when you add links into your document, the well-labeled picture becomes a Visual Index.

The link should be to a section of your document that you believe your reader would most want to reach to get the information about that U-PIP. (This is a fundamental question whenever you create an index: "does my reader want to come to this place in my document for this item?")

Your method of adding links to the picture depends upon the publishing mechanism for the document. If the document is published as:

* A Printed document, then use page numbers for the links;

* An Electronic Document, then use hyperlinks that a Reader can click on to follow. If the document is published as HTML, then the visual index can be an image map.

EXAMPLE 1: A PAIN IN MY FOOT

I have a pain in my foot when I walk. If I go to a website about feet, it would be very efficient for finding out about my pain, if I could see a picture of a foot with various areas where the pain could be. Links from the foot areas to specific web pages would enable me to find the information about my specific foot pain quickly.

EXAMPLE 2: PHOTO CORRECTING SOFTWARE

Show a picture with the errors that your software can handle, before and after correction. Here the U-PIP's are each of the photo errors.

EXAMPLE 3: A COURSE ON WRITING USER DOCUMENTATION

The Visual Index is a flowchart for creating the User Document. Since the Course is presented in HTML, the Visual Index is made from an image map, with hyperlinks into the sections of the Course relevant to each item in the flowchart.

BOTTOM LINE

A Visual Index is a simple concept. But like many simple concepts it is very powerful. Try to include one in your next document. You'll be doing your Reader a great service. <bio>Barry Millman, Ph.D., has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Psychology (Human Information Processing).
One of the most important things your company needs is a name. Your name will be the very first thing that almost all of your customers see from you -- long before they meet you, they'll have responded to something (or someone) that told them the name of your business.

So What?

So, if you're planning on running a professional operation, don't call it 'A1 Supplies' just because you want to be listed first in the phone book. You have to pick a name that says something about you and your business, and that people in your target market will be able to say without feeling stupid.

The Professional Name.

If you're running a serious business targeted at other businesspeople, you'll probably want to keep the name sober, but memorable. A good formula is your surname, followed by what you do: 'Smithfield Tailoring', or 'Watson Engineering'. You might also want to add the name of the town where you live: 'Watson Engineering Anytown'. Little things can make a big difference: 'Watson and Associates Engineering' or 'Watson Engineering Co.' both sound quite good, for example. Don't use your first name, though -- it sounds terribly amateurish. Would you rather deal with Ted's Office Supplies or the Johansson Office Supplies Co.?

Another approach is to leave out your name altogether, and simply become 'Anytown Engineers' or 'The Anytown Engineering Co.'. This makes you sound like the first choice locally, especially if your main competitor has the name of another town nearby in their name.

The Corporate Name.

They sound quite bad, I reckon, but there's a still a place for them -- mainly if you want to deal with the big companies that this kind of name appeals to. Simply think of a word to describe your business and translate it into Latin. Then add the word "Consulting", if you want.

The Trendy Name.

If you're going for a more young or technology-savvy market, you might want a less formal name. Names of this form should be kept to one word, and preferably written in lowercase, URL-style. Another common trick is to make '.com' part of the name. Notice the difference between 'Fun House' and 'funhouse.com' -- the Fun House doesn't sound all that much fun, does it?

The Playful Name.

You'll be surprised how many people will love your name if you just decide to name it after an animal, and use that animal in your logo too. If you don't have much of a marketing budget, this is a good way to get a quick brand identity -- if you choose the panda, for example, then people start associating you with pandas, and you can have panda-pattern designs on your stationery and decorate your office with bamboo. Don't underestimate the power of this, seriously.

The Shortened Name.

One naming method that seems to be especially well-used by the big hitters is to take two words that describe your business, shorten them both, and make it one word. So you end up with Fedex (Federal Express), or Microsoft (Microcomputer Software). This is good for suggesting what you do without having an overly lengthy name.

The Random Name.

If all else fails, a great way to make up a name is to just string together sounds that you like until you come up with a made-up word. This can be a surprisingly good way to come up with a name -- and it will be completely unique.

Make It Easy.

Whatever you do, though, make sure your business' name is easy to pronounce and spell. If your surname is hard to say, don't use it. If people seem to have trouble spelling a made-up word, come up with something easier. You'll lose out on an enormous amount of word-of-mouth business if people have to write your name down just to communicate it to each other.

Check for Others.

Once you've got some ideas, make sure you check that no-one else is already using them. It will be expensive to get halfway through starting up a company only to find that the name you wanted is already taken. Also, you'll have trouble establishing any kind of Internet prescence with an over-used name, if that was part of your plan -- if your name is too common, you won't stand a chance of getting yourname .com. <bio>See How You Can Profit From Your Very Own Pay Per Click Search Engine By Selling Traffic To Millions Of Advertisers.
Google has gone from being the #1 online search service to becoming a giant, wildly successful advertising company.

Who hasn't seen the little andquot;Ads by Gooogleandquot; text ads on any website page?

What Google brought the online world that has made them so insanely popular: contextually relevant ads.

Translation: ads that go with stuff people are already interested in - e.g. what they are already reading about. Visiting a travel site? The little Google ads you'll see offer luggage and other travel related fare.

Goodbye to ads we have no interest in. E.g. SUV ads on an environmental preservation site.

Google offers up ads on hundreds of millions of web pages, but only to the readers of THOSE specific pages, relevant to THAT specific content. Instead of putting the same product and service pitches on each web page. What a concept!

This is niche marketing - and Google has done it FOR the advertisers - who until Google, tried to pitch their stuff to everyone, like Ford Motor used to do.

Telemarketers pitched their stuff to the wrong people so often that the public rose up and asked the government to create the andquot;Do Not Call Registryandquot; - to get them to STOP calling us with stuff that wasn't andquot;contextually relevantandquot; to - i.e. not relevant to us.

Shall we follow Google's lead and become relevant to others? We focus on asking around for someone like you, who might like to know about something that has helped your achy knees, without surgery or drugs...

Or you might ask around for someone who who might like to know about a business of their own that they can do from home, like what you're doing...

Mass advertising is so over. Niche prospecting (for people like you) is what the world is responding to.

Shall we follow Google's lead? <bio>Kim Klaver is Harvard andamp; Stanford educated.
Sometimes, it's hard to have a marketing job as a loan officer. Simply because you have to be skilled in getting clients and there are a lot of competition from a lot of other loan officers in the market. To be able to save your job, you have to have an edge over your competitors.

First of all, many loan officers would want to stick on one particular type of loan because it narrows down their field and gives them a better way to contact potential clients. But if you want to be on top, you have to make sure that you could do all types of loans.

So whether the person needs personal loans or business loans, you have to be able to take care of their needs, so they will not have to go to someone else. If you market this to people, there's no doubt your appointment calendar will be filled right away.

Also make sure that you focus on your advertising efforts to find a large customer base. All types of people want to have several loans, and there are a lot of free advertising around. You can put your name and website for free. Remember that visibility is the key. If you do these things, you will find that you can surpass the veterans in your field.

The job market in the UK is greatly benefiting from the influx of new talent. There is an annual increase in University graduation rates, which means that companies are gaining benefits from these talented young professionals. In addition, decreased barriers between countries and the convenience of the internet mean that international workers are welcome in the United Kingdom.

Sales and Marketing are the professional fields that benefit greatly from this situation. Since both sales and marketing requires business acumen, intelligence and creativity. There are plenty of corporate sectors in the U.K. where interested marketing graduates can search for a job.

Telecommunications is one of the hottest fields for marketing professionals in the UK at present. In fact, there are a lot of print or television advertisements which are creative in showing the virtues of data plans and cell phones. Marketing professionals working with telecommunication firms work on effective and creative advertising to keep them beyond and above competition.

The automotive industry is also a good consideration for marketing professionals. These companies are always looking for people to sell and promote their latest line of products. Marketing professionals typically review the past advertising campaign and tag line of their firm and bring these older concepts into a new generation.

Finally, a good outlet for the skills of a marketing professional is the engineering industry. Young professionals can find great work with small and big firms even if the engineering field may be understated in its advertising to the public. Almost all sales people sell engineering services while working with large corporations, government bodies and other potential clients. On the other hand, marketing professionals can work with advertisers and graphic designers to find outlets. These outlets are used for their firm's logo and name. These professionals also often work on website and publication materials, as engineering services have few commercials.<bio>Jon Caldwell is a professional content manager.
Most house plans include everything you need to build your home; however, additional items may be needed to obtain a building permit. You will need a site plan which shows the location of your house on the property, the property line, and the setbacks. Other items may or may not include a septic tank system design if your lot is not serviced by the city or county sewer system.

Depending on the part of the country you live in, you will need to insure your house plans are in compliance with local codes. Many areas have specific energy codes and/ or special engineering requirements that are to be followed. For instance, the west coast area have strict engineering requirements for areas subject to earthquakes. Areas such as Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the southeast coast line are areas with high risk of hurricanes requiring special engineering to withstand such risk. North east areas such as New York, New Jersey, Baltimore and surounding areas require houseplans to stamp by a local licensed professional such as an architect or engineer. Building in these areas, will likely require the need to hire a local licensed structural engineer to analyze the house plans and provide additional drawings and calculations required by your building department. If you are unsure as to what is required in you area, check with your building department. They usually have some form of written instructions listing all of the items they require to submit for and obtain a building permit.

You will want to submit your plans and other require documents for a permit as soon as possible so you can begin construction at your scheduled time. Residential permits can take up to 3 months if everything is in order. If it is rejected for any reason this can extend well into your schedule and disrupt the entire building process in the beginning. So be smart and properly plan for the permitting process. <bio>Kirya Duncan is a Professional Building Besigner and a member of AIBD (American Institute of Building Designers).
Previous Jaguar XK, which was produced in 1996 and terminated in June of 2005, is considered a good selling sport car in the previous time. It is quite a challenge of new XK that the design and automotive engineering must be better than the old one. New XK improves the progress in automotive engineering very much and is more than Jaguar's expectation in the production of sport cars. It is because its development in aluminum body, transmission system, modern and luxury inner design. Debut a new Jaguar XK, which is fully improved in design, engineering, and thrust, is considered an extreme excitement.

New Jaguar XK was debuted in the beginning of 2006, and it showed the leadership of light-weighted automobile technology and still stayed beauty. A quality production of new XK will show the performance, luxury, and Jaguar design.

New XK is categorized in large-sized luxury sport car. Its market has high rate of growth and competition. During 1996-2006, sport cars market around the world has been growing over 200 percent, from 48,000 to 99,000 cars, as well as the quantity of competitors, from 4 to 7. It is predicted that in the next 5 years, there will be at least 8 competitors.

Generally, there are 2 main groups in large-sized luxury sport cars, which are Grand Tourers, high class luxury and comfortable one, and Overtly Sporty Cars, great performance and control. For XK, the significant property that draws both kinds of customers is the luxury sport cars and has great performance and control. In the past, when customers were going to buy one, they would have to consider which kind of sport cars they would really want, between luxury and comfortable or a great control.

New XK can interest customers who want a luxury car. That means they are looking for Grand Tourers that indicates wealth and extra but still sport, or in other words, luxury in sport style.

New XK has an incredible appearance which shows Jaguar-ness and high performance. Furthermore, customers will see the inner design which is very well-blended. Everything will focus on the driver. For instance, high quality materials, color tone, and many technologies play a part in comforting the drivers which makes the cars their highest performance.

The modern technology will help produce customers' driving experience and get their hearts. For example, an automatic reverse variation speed controlling and touch screen display in center console. We can say that new XK is the best sport car that can very well satisfy the customers in both sport style and luxury. <bio>Varon Sanornoi is the internet freelance writer.
You may have noticed that in the manning section of the Large Yacht Code (LY2) there is a new grade of engineer which was not mentioned in the old code, that of 'Assistant Engineer'. So.......

What is an Assistant Engineer?
Why did the MCA introduce this role?
What qualification do you need to be one?

What is it?

The concept of an Assistant Engineer was not invented for the yachting industry but has been adapted from merchant navy practice. The Assistant Engineer is someone carried in the complement of a yacht who, though not certified to be responsible for the operation and maintenance of plant, has enough knowledge to be of use to the Chief Engineer in carrying out many routine operations such as changing filters, transferring liquids, doing routine maintenance tasks, starting and stopping machinery. It is also intended that if anything were to happen to the Chief Engineer then the Assistant would have enough knowledge to get the yacht safely back in to harbour.

It is important to remember this role is only intended for yachts operating with an Unmanned Machinery Space (UMS): vessels requiring traditional watchkeeping will have to carry a minimum of two STCW qualified engineers. The person holding this position does not necessarily need to be someone who actually works full time in the Engineering Department, they could be a deck hand, the mate or someone from another department. Deck candidates take note, however, that in their case the service credited will not be counted at full rate but will be split equally between deck and engineering service.

Why did the MCA introduce this role?

The MCA considered that there was a need to enhance the Engineering Department in the smaller yachts, and it was also recognised that on the larger yachts, with UMS, operating on coastal voyages the Second Engineer was not being fully employed and could be safely replaced with an Assistant Engineer.

By using an Assistant Engineer in these positions a pathway is opened to enable holders of AEC and MEOL(Y) (see below) to gain useful experience on larger yachts on their way to gaining their Y4 qualifications.

As the Assistant Engineer can be a dual role position, a by-product of this change is a reduction in the salary bill whilst maintaining an acceptable standard of engineering expertise on board. This is important particularly on smaller yachts where no increase in actual numbers is required but engineering expertise is enhanced.

What qualification do you need to be one.?

Those who have been required by an MCA inspection to get an Assistant Engineer will know that nowhere does it say exactly what qualifications are needed for this role! This is because LY2 is relatively new and MGN 156, which would normally have this information, is too old. By calling the MCA you can find out that in fact the Approved Engine Course and the MEOL (Y) are the two key requirements depending on the engine power of the yacht and where it wants to go. Obviously general service merchant navy qualifications are also accepted,

I have suggested to the MCA that they rename the Approved Engine Course the Assistant Engineer's Course because the existing title does not describe adequately the course content which does not just concern engines. Keeping the initials the same will also save me from having to reprint our publicity! The table below gives guidance on what qualifications could be required for the Assistant Engineer under various circumstances. Always bear in mind that these tables in LY2 and in MGNs were not handed down to the Chief Examiner on marble tablets, like Moses on the mountain. Often this is misunderstood by senior crew and managers; they are GUIDANCE and can be varied, either relaxed or toughened in particular circumstances. A good example of this has already been mentioned: a yacht requiring a permanently staffed engine room would not be allowed to run with an Assistant Engineer whatever it says on tables like the one below.

The Master of a yacht, not the Chief Examiner, is responsible for the safe manning of the vessel, so if he or she is in any doubt they should ask for an opinion from the Seafarer's Training and Certification department of the MCA.

This table is an assimilation of LY2 and the current interpretation of engineering manning rules. Remember it is only applicable to vessels where the engine room is operated on an UMS basis.<bio>Blue Water Yachting is an exclusive yacht charter company specialising in luxury yacht charter in the South of France.
