Believe it or not, I actually hate onions in my food. Whenever I detect the sharp and pungent flavor of an onion in my meal, I cringe to myself a little and slowly pick through my food, trying to avoid the onions at all costs. So why am I writing an article about them? Well as it turns out, I'm alone in my opinion on onions...and the rest of you Americans and world-class citizens love the bulby oddities. So who am I to deny you an onion education -we wouldn't want you crying over an onion, would we? Oh but you already have.

So here's my guide to the onion. I hope you find it helpful as we'll go through some of its history, some interesting facts, and of course - the best of the best onion recipes.

The National Onion Association classifies onions into two categories: spring/summer fresh onions and the fall/winter storage variety. These fresher onions are available April through August while the dryer storage onions turn up more often August through April. Both come in red, white and yellow forms, but the spring/summer onions are said to be sweeter, moister, and milder. Therefore used in sweeter dishes, the fall/winter kind is used for savory dishes.

The most common onion is the yellow onion. Not only is most of American onion production (for more information on domestic onion production, click here) focused on yellow onions, but their full flavor is suitable for a wide range of cooking, most notable French Onion Soup. Red onions are used more often in salads, and other fresh uses, or for grilling or broiling, according to the National Onion Association. White onions show up quite a bit in Mexican cuisine and have a sweet flavor when sauteed. Others argue All of these varieties range in size - from 1 inch to 4.5 inches in diameter. For a more specific guide to the different varieties of onions including vidalia, walla walla, and Texas, click here.

"Onions should be firm and heavy for their size. Avoid onions that have sprouted or that have an odor, or that have green or moldy blemishes," says Cooks Thesaurus, who offers up some helpful advice on purchasing and cooking onions.

Another way to classify an onion is by its type: bulb, multiplier (a derivation of the bulb onion) or tree onions. The most common form is bulb, which includes the sweet onions like vidalia, and all the colored varieties we've just discussed. But if you noticed,

The top onion producer in 2005, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, was China, followed by India, who was followed by the United States. The third top onion producer, Americans harvested 3.3 million tons of onions in 2005.

Celebrating the Onion Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Festival

Why do onions make us cry?

You've probably noticed that when you cut up a raw onion, your eyes start to tear. A common problem for every onion chopper, this happens because of the enzymes in an onion. Since the onion is being chopped, the cells are being broken - allowing the enzymes to be released. The enzymes in an onion are called allianases and they react to the sulfides in the onion-chopping environment to create a sulfuric acid gas. This gas is immediately composed and released into the air, therefore reaching your eyes. Our eyes' nerve endings are irritated by sulfuric acid, therefore inducing uncontrollable "crying."

Cooks Thesauraus recommends chilling onions first to avoid tearing. "If you're prone to crying while cutting onions, try chilling them first, then peeling them under running water. Always cook onions over low or medium heat, since they become bitter at high temperatures."

Onion Recipes Worth Crying Over

Onions turn up in all sorts of dishes, from appetizers and soups even to desserts. They are one of the most widely used ingredient, not just across dishes but across cultural cuisine. Here are some recipes worth trying out:

Recipes that focus on onions:

Tandoori Onion Salad Onions Au Gratin Caramelized Red Bell Peppers and Onions French Onion Soup Brown-Braised Onions Baked Onions Onion Tart (Pissaladiere) Onion Bhajis Indian Pickled Onions Tomato and Onion Salad with Tahini Dressing Onion Rings

Recipes that use onion as a supplement:

Onion Meatball Supper Braised Artichokes with Little Onions and Bacon Grilled Sirloin and Red Onions with Blue Cheese Butter Onion Chicken Breasts Cranberry Onion Pork Roast Grilled Bratwurst and Onion Sandwiches Onion-Beef Fettucine Corn and Onion Casserole

Sources:

National Onion Association Cooks Thesaurus UN Food and Agriculture Organization OnionFestival.com <bio>Hillary Marshak is a writer and editor for http://Recipe4Living.com, an up and coming recipe sharing Website.
Hair loss has been a problem for many people for many years and as an effect of that, there is a huge industry of medical companies that are targeting that market with all kinds of products. As it has always been with medicine it is commonly produced in laboratories and often it is therefore a recipe put together by a variety of chemicals. To avoid all those chemicals that our world is full of people are turning to natural hair loss remedies.

Believe it or not but one of the natural remedies that is said to have an effect on the loss of hair is to rub onion juice into the head. This procedure should stimulate the growth of the hair and might have some positive affects on the loss of hair as well. Rubbing onion juice is not a solution for everyone as onion juice will make your eyes water and has a terrible smell =96 so don't leave your house with onion juice in your hair. Secondly it doesn't work for everyone and there has currently not been any real proof to show that this kind of treatment will actually produce any significant results. On the other hand it is a safer and much cheaper solution than the products already on the market, but to compare the two are maybe not fair to neither of the hair loss treatments.

Using onion juice is not the only natural treatment to be used against hair loss as many other herbs are believe to have a positive affect on hair loss and retention of hair, but as with the onion juice the scientific proofs are still missing. One of the reasons for the lack of proof is that these scientific tests are extremely expensive and there are currently no major companies in the market with a sufficient economical strength to carry through these tests and until that happens the only proofs of bettering hair loss comes from the products offered my the companies behind Rogaine and Propecia.

The key ingredient in brand names such as Rogaine is Minoxidil. Rogaine is one of the only over-the-counter products approved by the Food and Drug Administration for men and women and because of that it has gained extreme popularity. You can find lots of other hair loss products on the market making claims similar to those of Rogaine, but other than Finasterade which is marketed under the brand name Propecia, no other product has been approved as a treatment for hair loss by the FDA.

Using a formula with 5 milligrams of Finasterade it has been marketed with the name Proscar and has also been used to treat prostate problems in men. It works by inhibiting the development of Dihydrotestosterone in the body and the drug does show results when using it as one of the hair loss remedies made available. While the product Rogaine is used as a scalp lotion the Propecia product is only available in the form of pills. As a final remark the use of Finasterade is not recommended for women as it is known to cause birth defects, so if your are a woman and are pregnant =96 stay off the Propecia product. <bio>For more information about hair loss and ways to prevent or even reverse the loss of hair visit http://www.StopHairLossSite.com </bio>

I love a good metaphor. An especially powerful metaphor for me lately has been that of an onion. The Cleveland Method deals with a deep understanding of our core drives and unconscious motivations. When we focus inward, only then can we genuinely understand others.

In recent months I've noticed a tremendous amount of growth in many of my students who have been applying persuasion techniques not just to business and sales, but to every facet of their lives.

One of my students, an adviser who is becoming more and more successful in his business and financial life, was telling me on a recent phone call how these skills have not only affected his "bottom line" but they have meant so much to him in other ways. As a result of one technique, he stopped smoking and some other incredibly positive things have taken place in his life. (This is what I live for. When my students have breakthroughs in all areas.)

I have experienced this in my own life as well. After shedding 140 pounds of unwanted fat, and still going strong, I've seen the figurative layers of the onion being peeled away in a tangible way. As we peel and change and get to the core of what is important in life, we find even more enhancements and improvements we can make.

Peeling away the layers of the onion, shows us what's underneath. I peeled away layers of unnecessary padding and found another problem that needs to be addressed. A hernia. And now I'm able to help myself even further.

Metaphors motivate us to understand the power of our unconscious drives and the ultimate motivating factors in life. While m focus in my programs has become more laser focused on how to persuade our affluent clientle and prospects, I see that the bigger picture is fantastically important. We are our own first project in persuasion. When we learn to influence and persuade ourselves, that is the first brick in the foundation.

I can absolutely guaranty you that there's never been a great persuader on the face of the planet who doesn't have a degree of mastery over his own life. Before I lost the weight, I had a very conflicted relationship with the thinking, the practice, and the actual doing. Eventually, something clicked. I got it. I understood on another level that as an onion, the first step is to peel away the skin, and to keep peeling through visualization, through tapping, through intention, through coaching, through determination, through the universe system-it all came together as if I were a magician and finally figured out the alchemical recipe for my own self mastery.

This is all a process. I will be the first to say that this cannot be mastered. It would be arrogant to say that I have mastered persuasion or self-persuasion. It can't be done. The minute I feel I've attained the highest I can, what point is there in continuing? Continuing to grow and evolve is what keeps us vibrant. My hope is that while I continue to focus primarily on persuading the affluent, that the bigger picture of evolution, growth and persuasion is really what my students come away with. <bio>Kenrick Cleveland teaches techniques to earn the business of affluent clients using persuasion. He runs public and private seminars and offers home study courses and coaching programs in http://www.maxpersuasion.com persuasion techniques. </bio>

When you are camping out you do not have to put up with snacks and dehydrated dinners. Nor do you have to make cooking seem like a chore. Using a few easy camping recipes you can eat as well as you do at home. Part of the fun of camping is experimenting with different ways and types of cooking. Below are four tasty recipes for you to try.

Camp Stew:

Ingredients. One and a half pound of ground beef. Two medium sized carrots. One medium sized onion. Five medium sized potatoes. One large tin of peas. One packet of onion soup mix.

Instructions. Cook the meat in a large pan until nicely browned. Chop the carrots, onion, and potatoes, and add to the meat. Make up the soup mix with enough water to cover all the ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste and cook with the lid on until the potatoes are tender. Add the peas and simmer for a further five to ten minutes until they are hot.

Hobo Dinner In Foil:

Ingredients. Four medium sized potatoes. One onion. One pound of ground beef. Quarter of a cup of water.

Instructions. Peel and slice the potatoes, and the onion. Place the ground beef into a container and add the water, mix together well and then add the potatoes and onion. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Divide into three or four portions and wrap with double thickness of tin foil. Place onto a medium to hot grill for about forty minutes, carefully moving occasionally. Open with caution and serve with some bread rolls.

Chicken In Foil:

Ingredients. One small green pepper, chopped. Half of a small red pepper, chopped. Ten button mushrooms, chopped. One teaspoon of butter or margarine Four chicken breasts. One can of pineapple slices. Four sixteen inch squares of tin foil.

Instructions. Divide the peppers and mushrooms into four equal portions. Coat a small area in the centre of each piece of tin foil with the butter or margarine. Place one portion of the peppers and mushrooms onto the greased area of tin foil, place the chicken breast on top and a pineapple slice on top of the chicken breast. Season with salt and pepper and fold tin foil over securely so there are no leaks. Repeat with the rest of the ingredients so you have four individual servings. Place onto hot grill or coals for approximately Fifteen minutes, then turnover for another ten to fifteen minutes.

Baked Potatoes With Bacon Wrap:

Ingredients. Potatoes. Bacon. Tin foil.

Instructions. This is a really cheap and easy camping recipe. Scrub enough potatoes (for the amount of people to be served) in water and pierce several times with a fork. Wrap the potatoes in a layer of bacon and then wrap with tin foil with the shiny side inside. Place in the hot coals of your camp fire and turn occasionally. Check that they are cooked by piercing with a fork; if it slides into the potatoes easily then they are done. Serve with whatever vegetables are available, or beans etc.

These are just four easy camping recipes for you to try out, but with a little imagination and some trial and error, I am sure that you will be able to come up with many more of your own. <bio>Click the link below for 580 great easy camping recipes that your family will love! http://www.buytryreview.com/recommends/580campingrecipes </bio>

Holding great outdoor BBQs is not just about the sausages, the burgers or the fish dishes that compliment the grilled food. With some advanced thought and good presentation can certainly go along way to making that all important great outdoor BBQs something to be remember and envied.

When cooking those famous burgers of yours don't forget the all important burger buns, but don't forget the importance of a fresh and somewhat crusty bread will always go down well. The French stick! The French stick always looks superb cut in diagonal slices, wrapped in a fresh cloth placed in the middle of the table in a long dish. Place a cover over the butter dish. We don't want unwanted guest at our great outdoor BBQs such as bugs and flies.

A quick and easy recipe that can be made the day before the great outdoor BBQs is the homemade potato salad. The potato salad can be brought out from the fridge nicely chilled just before the bbq begins. The night before cut some new potatoes into quarters, then mix in some mayonnaise and some chopped chives. If you decide to add freeze dried chives remember these will be stronger in flavor than fresh chives.

A Different Salad

Most salads can look a little boring and a lot of people think of lettuce, cucumber and tomato and very little else. Use some imagination and creativity to create a salad that is more appealing for your guests at the great outdoor BBQs you have.

What about an onion platter? An onion platter is easy to make and certainly doesn't have to be overpowering that it will knock the socks of friends. Ok lets get started; slice a few red onions into thin rings. Next chop up some fresh spring onions like you did with the red onions. Mix both the onions and spring onions together, add some chives and a spoon of olive oil, salt and pepper to season the onion platter. Once this is done leave them to marinate for a few hours before you serve the onion platter. Of course a bowl of beef tomatoes and cherry tomatoes (halved) can be prepared in a similar fashion.

At any great outdoor BBQs the perfect accompaniment using our traditional oven is a plate of jacket potatoes. These can be served anytime during the day but in the evening is the special time. Start by pre-cooking the potatoes in the oven; don't fully cook the potatoes then finish cooking the potatoes on the BBQ. If you do use potatoes at your great outdoor BBQs more than likely you will require less meat. This in turn will help you keep the costs down and keep you within a reasonable budget. A perfect topping to any jacket potato is a serving of butter and add salt and pepper to taste.

At any great outdoor bbqs, providing or adding accompaniments isn't all that difficult. Some thought and preparation before hand goes along way. You will be envied. <bio>David Smith is a successful Webmaster and publisher of Great Outdoor BBQs Blog.
Think spinach and the cartoon Popeye comes to mind. It is not so much of a mystery why the creators have decided to create this character. It is the only way to convince kids to eat their spinach. High in iron and vitamins, the spinach has a slightly bitter taste that needs a little getting used to. But with the following preparations, even most discriminating kids will come in for seconds.

24-HOUR SPINACH SALAD RECIPE

Ingredients:

1 pound Fresh Spinach -- torn in pieces 1 pound Bacon -- chopped 1 Head Lettuce -- torn in pieces 1 medium red onion -- diced 6 Eggs, Hard-Boiled -- cut in wedges 3/4 cup Mayonnaise 3/4 cup Miracle Whip 8 ounces Swiss cheese

Directions:

This is a layered salad, don't mix until serving time.

Place prepared spinach in bottom of large bowl, sprinkle with salt, pepper and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Add prepared bacon, do not mix. Add onion and prepared lettuce, add the eggs.

Mix both mayonnaise and Miracle Whip and pour over eggs, cut up the Swiss cheese and place over mayonnaise. Cover and let the salad set for 24 hours. Mix and stir just before serving.

WILTED SPINACH SALAD WITH WARM DRESSING RECIPE

Ingredients: 2 heads spinach; torn 1 small can mandarin oranges; drained 1 avocado; sliced

Dressing

2 teaspoons sugar 2 green onions; sliced 4 slices bacon; chopped 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons water

Directions:

Tear spinach into bowl; season with salt and pepper. Fry bacon crisp; add vinegar, water, sugar and onion; heat to boiling. Pour over spinach. Toss until wilted. Add mandarin oranges and avocado.

SPINACH FLAMBE RECIPE

Ingredients:

6 bunches spinach -- washed and dried 6 hard-boiled eggs -- sliced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper 12 strips bacon, crisply fried -- chopped 3/4 cup bacon drippings 1/2 cup malt vinegar 1/4 cup lemon juice 4 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 1/2 ounce brandy (100 proof)

Directions:

Tear spinach into bite-sized pieces and place in large salad bowl. Add egg slices, salt and pepper.

Mix remaining ingredients except brandy in small saucepan and heat until very hot. Heat brandy briefly, add to saucepan and ignite. Pour flaming dressing over spinach and toss gently but thoroughly. Serve on warm salad plates.

SHRIMP AND GRAPEFRUIT SPINACH SALAD RECIPE

Ingredients:

3 pink grapefruit 3 tablespoons wine vinegar 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard Salt and pepper 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 1/2 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 1/2 pound spinach, stems trimmed and leaves washed well 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced

Directions:

With a sharp knife, peel the grapefruit, removing all the bitter white pith. Slice about 3/8 inch thick. In a large bowl, whisk together the vinegar, mustard, and 1/8 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Drizzle in 1/2 cup of the oil, whisking to combine. Season the shrimp with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper.

In a large nonstick skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon oil over medium heat. Add the shrimp, and cook, turning once, until pink, about 3 minutes per side. Add the grapefruit, cooked shrimp, spinach, and onion to the vinaigrette in the large bowl.
Making a pea salad is quick and easy. Here is the basic recipe with some options to tweak it up a little.

If you're putting a meal together and need something quick to go with it, a simple pea salad recipe may be the answer.

It's very simple, just drain the water from a can of peas and put peas into a bowl. Add a little chopped vegetable and a tablespoon or so of mayonnaise and mix.

That's the basic recipe, here's a few suggestions to spice it up a little:

1 - Add a slice of finely chopped onion. You don't need much and it really adds flavour.

2 - Mince a small garlic clove and add to salad. Do this only if you like garlic.

3 - Add other vegetables. Cucumber, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper, celery and more. Chop them up very fine and add sparingly. Like the onion you don't need much.

4 - Cheese it up. Shred or cube some cheese and throw it in. Any kind will do. You could also use some 3 cheese ranch dressing rather than mayonnaise for the dressing.

5 - Add a hard boiled egg, peeled and chopped of course. This mixes very well with the mayonnaise.

6 - Chopped sweet pickle or relish will sweeten it up and add a little crunch.

7 - Enhance the mayonnaise dressing with a little shot of mustard.

8 - Add a pinch of spice. Oregano, dill, cilantro, any others you may like.

9 - A pinch of salt will bring the flavours together.

10 - You may want to add a can of beans such as green, waxed, garbanzo, kidney etc. Any type of salad bean will do. This is a great way to make your salad more interesting.

When you have your ingredients all together, gently mix and refrigerate. If you are in a hurry to get it on the table just chill it in the freezer for 5 minutes or so. <bio>Gordon Angrignon is a sea-urchin diver from Cumberland, British Columbia on Vancouver Island.
Hair loss is a wide spread phenomenon that often makes you feel very bad about yourself. Nothing could enhance your looks as better as healthy hair. For most of the people hair loss happens to be a miserable experience and they take a long time to accustom themselves with this new condition. But I would suggest all folks who feel traumatized because of their partial or complete hair loss to better search for remedies instead of feeling bad about it for the whole of their life.

There is a wide range of remedial options which claim to offer permanent cure to hair loss. Herbal remedies are the best treatment options available though. There are two advantages with herbal hair loss treatment, first it is cost effective and secondly it doesn't give way to side effects that you may experience with other hair loss treatments. Herbal hair loss remedies are of two types, either it could be in form of herbs meant to be ingested or there could herbs to be massaged or applied on scalp.

In this article I would restrict myself to relate only external use herbs for hair. There is a good number of external use herbs which are applied on the scalp but only a few of them have the proven record of bringing back hair on scalp.

Following are some of the easily available herbs:

1.Carthamus Tinctorius: It is popularly known as Safflower oil. This oil happens to be very useful in making hair follicles work again. It tends to increase blood circulation towards follicles making follicles enriched with essential elements to combat any disruption in its functioning. It could be applied twice on scalp in a day. A consistent and long term use would give positive results.

2.Onion: This essential food ingredient happens to be a unanimous choice as herbal paste to be applied on scalp for improving hair regeneration. Onion proves effective because of its sulfur content. Before taking bath you can apply onion on your scalp. The practice could be continued for months to get the desired effect.

3.Red Henna: It is very common herb in use to combat hair loss. This herb is better suggested to be used twice a week. If you constantly keep applying red henna on your scalp you would prevent hair fall and you might be able to activate follicles for hair regeneration.

4.Aloe Vera: It is also common use herb for various purposes and its efficacy for treating hair loss is due to presence of nitric oxide and certain enzymes that help in hair nourishment and growth.

5.Red Pepper: It also serves the same purpose. But it shouldn't be excessively used on hairs.

These are some of the herbs that have proved to be effective as hair loss remedy. You can use any of them to overcome hair loss but consistency and patience is a prerequisite with these herbal external use medications. <bio>The author writes about a number of different topics.
