Allergies, more so a disorder than a disease, affect a person's immune system. Allergens are the trigger for an allergic reaction and these allergens are most commonly found in the environment. Most allergic reactions are acquired over time by the immune system, are very rapid and are predictable. Most people, who have suffered from allergies for an extended period of time, know when their body is going to have a reaction to an allergen. The most common allergic reactions are from food, asthma, venom of a bee or wasp, hives, hay fever, eczema and/or grasses and weeds.

Not all allergies are harmless. Some are so severe that they can become life-threatening. People who have an allergy to a certain food are in danger of an anaphylactic reaction, which could lead to death. Food allergies can cause swelling of the throat and restriction of the airwaves if medicine isn't administered immediately. People who are allergic to bee stings, if the medicine is not administered immediately, can also face a life-threatening situation.

There are different tests that doctors and allergists use to determine whether or not someone is allergic to a specific thing. Treatments available are medication in the form of steroids, anti-histamines, other oral medications and even immunotherapy to desensitize the response of one's body to an allergen.

Some of the most common allergies are to ragweed, dogs, cats, dust mites and tobacco smoke. How can you tell if you have allergies? The symptoms are easy to pinpoint. They are watery eyes, itchy eyes, coughing, wheezing, sneezing and even itchy areas on the skin. It is also possible to be allergic to medicines such as aspirin, Tylenol and even penicillin. If someone with allergies to these medications happens to take one, a doctor should be consulted immediately. When someone is stung by a bee or a wasp, eats a food they are allergic to, or takes medication they are allergic to, the most common form of treatment on the spot is an injection of epinephrine. Epinephrine will ease the reaction to the allergen and allow time for transport to a doctor or hospital for further treatment.

Many allergies occur because of high pollen counts in localized areas or pollutants in the air. These cause redness of the eyes, an itchy nose, sneezing and coughing on a regular basis. Allergies can also be tied to family history. Parents that suffer from allergies are more likely to have children that suffer from allergies, if not the exact same ones. Doctors use two different tests to determine allergic reactions. They are skin testing and blood testing. With skin testing, a doctor or nurse will prick your arm or back with various needles containing allergens. If you have a certain reaction then you are allergic. Blood tests are used more commonly to determine if a patient is allergic to different types of medicine.

Treatment for allergies comes in many different forms. Patients can take oral medications, steroids, allergy shots and even immunotherapy. The easiest treatment for an allergy is avoiding the allergen at all costs.<bio>Family Intervention for DrugsBenefits of a Family Intervention</bio>

There are currently a variety of allergy treatment medications available to help alleviate the misery allergies can bring. The coughing, sneezing, runny eyes and itchy nose associated with allergies can make life hard to deal with.

Allergy relief can come in the form of allergy shots, prescription medications or over-the-counter treatments. Your doctor can suggest the treatment that will be best for your individual condition.

One form of allergy relief comes in the form of a series of allergy shots. In order to receive allergy shots, your doctor will take tests to determine which allergens you are allergic to. An allergen is basically a substance, such as pollen, ragweed or cat dander, that produces an allergic reaction. The shots you will be given will contain a small amount of this allergen.

The idea is that if the body is exposed to a small bit of this allergen over an extended period of time, the body will begin to produce an antibody for the allergen. After a period of six months, you should start to see some relief from your allergies.

Before you start allergy shots, however, talk to your doctor about your entire medical history. Certain health conditions you have or medicines you take may prevent you from being a candidate for allergy shots.

Allergy relief is also available in the form of both over-the-counter and prescription allergy medications. Most allergy medicines will contain one of two different classes of ingredients. One of these ingredients is a class of drugs called antihistamines.

Antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine, help to stop the chemical reaction in your body that result in an allergic reaction. Decongestants, such as pseudoephidrine, on the other hand, will help to relieve nasal and sinus congestion caused by allergies. Allergy medicines may also contain ingredients to help thin mucus, lower fever or ease aches and pains if you experience these symptoms also.

If you choose to see your doctor for you allergies, he might order a prescription allergy medicine for you. Prescription allergy medications are available in tablets, capsules, liquids and even eye drops. Non-sedating antihistamines are available only by prescription.

Generally prescription allergy medications are longer acting than those you can get without a prescription. These treatments also don't impair learning abilities. This is especially important for children who suffer with allergies.

There are also a variety of allergy treatments available over-the-counter if you want to treat your allergies on your own. You can purchase these medicines without a doctor's prescription; however, you might want to consult with your pharmacist about your particular symptoms to be sure you are choosing the best one for you.

Many forms of allergy relief that once required a doctor's order, such as Claritin and Nasalcrom, are now available without a prescription. While these two medicines generally don't cause drowsiness, most other over-the-counter antihistamines, such as Benadryl, will possibly make you sleepy. If you do decide to take these medicines, pay attention to the effect they have on you. You might not want to drive if you notice yourself becoming very sleepy.

Whatever extent your allergies bring misery there is allergy relief available. See your doctor to find out if your case could be helped with allergy shots or if your best bet is prescription or even over-the-counter treatments. <bio>For more information on allergies try visiting http://www.theallergyeffect.com - a website that specializes in providing allergy related tips, advice and resources to including information on allergy relief. </bio>

Whether it's dust, pollens, or different kinds of food, many Americans today are susceptible to having an allergy. An allergy is a reaction of the immune system to certain types of substances, which are called allergens.

When the person with an allergy, for example animal dander, comes in contact with the allergen, his body will experience different types of reaction. Depending on the type of allergy, the person can experience rashes, difficulty in breathing, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes or involuntary bowel movement. In the most extreme cases of allergy attacks, the person can suffer an anaphylactic shock and can cause death.

What are the symptoms of an allergy?

Allergy attacks vary in symptom and degree.

Mild allergy symptoms can usually be seen on a specific area and do not spread on different parts of the body. This is indicated by a rash, itchiness, watery eyes, uncontrollable sneezing, or swelling in the affected area.

Moderate symptoms include allergic reactions that spread to the entire body. This is manifested by itchiness, numbness, involuntary bowel movement or difficulty in breathing.

A severe allergic reaction is called anaphylaxis. It is a dangerous emergency state where the body's reaction to the allergen is fast, sudden and does not hit only one area of the body. This allergic symptom can begin with a persistent itching followed by abdominal pains, vomiting and hives. Dizziness or confusion may also be a symptom because anaphylaxis causes a sudden drop in the person's blood pressure.

These allergy symptoms can appear in different parts of the body:

Eyes -- redness, itchiness and watery eyes.

Nose -- swelling of the mucous membrane resulting in a runny nose and sneezing.

Lungs -- constriction, wheezing and difficulty in breathing, which is sometimes signs of asthma.

Ears -- swelling, a slight pain and even temporary impairment or hearing loss.

Skin -- itchiness, reddening and swelling of affected area.

Treatment

There are treatments for a person's allergy, depending on the type of allergen he or she may be susceptible to. For an airborne allergen like pollen, animal dander, mold, dust mite feces and fur from cats or dogs, medicines like a nasal spray, decongestants or antihistamines can be sufficient to give immediate relief from the symptoms. Eye drops can also be used if the redness and itchiness becomes too much.

For an ingested allergen like an allergy to certain types of food, the best treatment is to avoid the food altogether. Food allergy can cause wheezing, hives, runny nose, swelling of the mouth area and sometimes, difficulty in breathing. For the rashes, a skin cream can applied to make it feel better. Antihistamines also reduce the other symptoms.

There are people with allergies to certain types of drugs and insect bites. Usually, they get their treatments through an injection of epinephrine (adrenaline) administered by a doctor. This will immediately reverse the allergy symptoms and save the person.

Most of the allergy medicines can be bought over-the-counter at the local drugstore. But before you get one, make sure that a doctor properly diagnosed the person with the allergy. A wrong treatment can kill a person.

Prevention

Can an allergy be prevented? Sadly no. One cannot prevent an allergy attack but they can treat it by getting the right medicines. The person with an allergic reaction must also look at their environment and make the proper changes to reduce the symptoms in their body.

One can only win the battle against allergies but making a positive action. Do not fall victim to these allergens. <bio>Charlene J. Nuble 2006.
Why don't restaurants know what ingredients are in their food?

I have been allergic to dairy products among other things for quite a few years. So when I visit restaurants, I always politely request "no cheese, or sour cream." The next thing you know I get an entrée with a cream sauce on it. Most food servers don't even know that this contains dairy products!

Since the menus are never explicit about exactly what the allergen ingredients are in the entrees, I will ask the food server if a certain dish has dairy products in it if I'm not sure. Sometimes I'll ask if it contains something else I am allergic to. They automatically look at you like you are the pickiest person on the planet! Then I have to explain that I am allergic to dairy products and other certain ingredients. They will get a concerned look, and tell me that they will talk to the chef to find out what is in the entrée I am questioning.

They usually come back to the table and explain that the chef doesn't know what is in some of the sauces or ingredients because they are sent to them pre-packaged or bottled. So I sometimes take a chance and order an entrée thinking that it is okay. Even tarter sauce for fish sometimes is made with sour cream, even though I like it made with mayonnaise and I've had to stop eating it after trying it out.

One time I ordered dinner that I was allergic to unknowingly and immediately I started getting a reaction and had them take it away, I then just ate the bread that came with the meal. I was very pleased when they took my order off the bill, but it could have been avoided in the first place if they would have been more knowledgeable about the ingredients.

I really appreciate the fact that it is now mandatory that the allergen ingredients are listed on most all types of products in the grocery stores! Especially when the label plainly states that the product contains milk, instead of having to read through the long list of ingredients that often list milk as "whey" or "casein." When you are allergic to dairy products especially, it is always wise to learn the different terms for dairy because not all products are plainly written on the food labels. Some products say "dairy free" on the front label but the ingredients label lists casein, so the labels need to be checked thoroughly.

While we are on the subject of food labels with allergen information, a thought comes into my mind (okay...I've been thinking about this for a long time!) Why aren't restaurants required to list the allergen ingredients plainly on the menus next to the entrée description? Are we allergy sufferers asking too much?

I guess if I didn't have food allergies, I wouldn't really care whether the restaurants did or not. But if a person does ever experience what it feels like having an instant food allergy reaction or some of the "soon to follow" reactions, they would really want this information on all restaurant menus.

How extremely nice it would be to not have to bother the food server, and have a dinner where I wouldn't have to be worrying whether or not, I am going to pass out, have difficulty breathing or worse!

Food allergies are more and more common everyday. I am for getting this valuable information on all restaurant menus! When will this happen? Soon I hope. <bio>Verona maintains several websites including a Food Allergy and Colitis website with a forum, plus a Christian website. Both are filled with expert articles and information.
Latex allergies were first recognized about 35 years ago. It is an alarming allergy and incidence of latex allergies are on the rise. The majority of people at risk for a latex allergy are people who have to wear gloves such as in a medical workplace or in a restaurant. Allergic reactions to latex can be very serious. Exposure to latex has been implicated in many deaths in the past decades. The FDA has reports of more than a thousand complaints attributed to latex and about fifteen deaths.

Latex is contained in over 40,000 products. It is very prevalent and many people have found that the latex can burn their skin. If you are unfamiliar with latex, it is a milky substance made from the natural rubber harvested from a rubber tree. There are some latex gloves that do not contain natural rubber. The allergy symptoms result from a reaction to the natural rubber.

Latex allergy comes in two different forms. Delayed hypersensitivity refers the development of a rash that following the use of gloves or touching products containing the allergen. Though your rash may be severe and uncomfortable, it is nothing to worry about. You should consult your doctor and to get help for the rash and any anti-bacterial medication needed to keep the rash from getting infected. The second type of allergy is much serious. The initial reaction is called anaphylaxis. This results in a lowering of the blood pressure, difficulty breathing, and potentially even death. Many patients with the second type are also affected by severe hay fever.

You can be tested for latex allergy by your doctor. He or she will usually conduct a blood test and skin test. Some people are highly prone to the severe, immediate reaction; therefore, it is important to conduct a blood test to determine the severity of an allergy. An immediate reaction can cause inability to breathe and eventually cause death by suffocation. If you are interested in being tested, you should contact your doctor to determine if you are at risk for immediate reaction or if you have a delayed hypersensitivity reaction. <bio>Lisa Davis contributes articles to several online magazines, most recently http://byvak.com and http://ruvek.com </bio>

Can you believe that an estimated one third of all Americans suffer from allergies in one form or another? Allergies today are the most common cause for chronic nasal congestion in children. Furthermore, for some people who suffer from both allergies and eczema, allergy shots are an effective way to manage their eczema flare-ups. A general practitioner will often provide a referral to an allergist for a patient with eczema. An allergist is a doctor who is trained in helping pinpoint the source of a patient's allergy and then in helping the person treat the symptoms, thereby reducing the frequency of flare-ups.

How does it work? Allergy shots are a form of allergy and asthma treatment in which increasing, controlled doses of an allergen are injected into a patient over a period of time. The goal in using allergy shots is to increase a patient's natural ability to tolerate a particular allergen, while simultaneously, decreasing the symptoms that result from an allergic reaction.

Allergy shots, also known as allergen immunotherapy, are similar to a vaccination. They serve to increase the ability of the immune system to work properly. The stronger the immune system is, the easier time it will have blocking an allergic reaction. An allergic reaction occurs when the body mistakes a common, harmless substance for an invader. When the body is exposed to the invader, it undertakes a series of chemical reactions as protection. As long as the person administering them is a trained professional, allergy shots can be both effective as well as safe and can be successfully used on children as young as four or five years of age.

Of course, this is not without debate. Some people believe in the effectiveness of allergy shots in the control of eczema while others are less impressed with the results. Research into allergy shots as treatment for eczema has shown that in some cases they can cause worsening of the symptoms. However, allergy shots have been found to be beneficial in treating other problems such as allergic rhinitis also known as hay fever, the symptoms of which are a runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes; breathing problems relating to asthma and symptoms accompanying an insect sting allergy. So each individual case must be considered before treatment is begun.

Allergy shots contain a purified form of the suspected allergen. Customarily, the shots are given to a sufferer throughout the year, over a five-year span of time. The allergy shot dosage begins small and then increases gradually over the first four to six months, little by little. After that time the dosage levels off to what is called a maintenance dose. This amount is then administered to the patient for up to a period of three years.

It is necessary to go for your allergy shots once or twice weekly at the start of treatment. The dose begins slower, gradually increasing to allow the immune system to become accustomed to it as well as to allow it time to begin to build an immunity to the substance. This is often called the buildup phase. Once this is reached, the aforementioned maintenance dose is administered and then the frequency shots begins to decline. It goes from a weekly shot, to bi-weekly, and then, in many cases, to a monthly shot.

Allergy shots have been found be more effective on some allergens than others. For example, they are most effective on inhaled allergens such as pet fur, dust, pollens, and mold. That may offer explanation as to why hay fever and asthma would respond better to allergy shots than eczema. The particular changes that the body undergoes with eczema may not respond as well to treatment. Only further research will answer those questions. <bio>Linda Williams contributes articles to several online magazines, most recently http://bosiv.com and http://nedod.com </bio>

Those that have allergic asthma are known to have chronic inflammatory conditions within their breathing airways. Those that face allergic types of asthma will have an asthma attack that is brought on by the various types of contact with such things as they are allergic to such as dust, pollen, dander and even mold. The treatment for this type of asthma is important to take note of although the treatment method often starts by learning what the allergy is.

Those that have allergic forms of asthma are those that often have the same types of symptoms as other asthma patients. It is estimated that about 60 percent of those that suffer from asthma actually have allergic asthma. The symptoms of an attack are the same as other asthma in that shortness of breath, changing breathing patterns, pain in the chest area, wheezing, coughing and rapid breathing are all experienced by those that suffer from this form of asthma. The most common way to get this type of asthma is to inherit it from a parent or relative that has had allergic asthma.

As far as treatment goes, the first step is to determine the allergn to individual and then to avoid that allergen. In doing this, the frequency of allergic reactions will happen. The same medications that are used to treat other asthma sufferers such as anti inflammatory, are used to treat those that suffer from allergic asthma. In addition, there are other medications that can be taken to limit the reaction that the body has to the allergen thereby lower the frequency of the asthma reactions. Those that face asthma should determine if allergic asthma may be behind their asthma. If so, avoiding the trigger to that allergy will help in minimizing the asthma attacks. <bio>Roger Thompson writes about asthma, health related Issues and jobs for http://www.idohealthcare.com </bio>

There are three main kinds of allergy: allergy to food, inhalant allergy, and contact allergy.

Allergies to pollens and seasonal grasses fall into the inhalant allergy category, because breathing them triggers allergic reactions. Some people have exercise-induced allergies, especially when exercising outdoors, because breathing increases and thus exposure to allergens is enhanced. But you can also inhale allergens indoors. Many people have indoor allergies, the most common ones being to pet dander, mold, and dust mites. Inhalant allergies usually exhibit themselves in breathing difficulties, congestion, watery eyes, sneezing, and other respiratory symptoms.

Contact dermatitis is the official name for allergic reactions to things that come in contact with the skin. Many people don't realize that poison ivy is an allergen. Poison ivy is probably the best known example of contact dermatitis. Poison ivy isn't poisonous; it triggers an allergic reaction in most people. Rashes and skin irritation are the body's way of trying to repel an andquot;enemyandquot; in the form of an allergen. Some people have contact dermatitis reactions due to an allergy to rubber, wool, dyes or cosmetics. Nickel is the most common metal to trigger contact allergies; people with a nickel allergy need to be careful that they don't wear jewelry that contains nickel, in bracelets, necklaces, or in body piercings. Certain cosmetics ingredients trigger allergies, including some ingredients in hair dyes. Fragrance is the most common cause of allergies to cosmetics; if you experience allergies, try unscented products. Contact allergies typically are manifested in itching, rashes and hives.

Not all contact dermatitis is due to allergy. In fact, 80 percent of skin reactions are to actual irritants such as chemicals, acids, and some soaps.

Food allergies typically manifest themselves with itching, rashes and hives, but they can also affect the respiratory system. In severe cases, a food allergy can trigger anaphylactic shock that causes the throat to close and breathing passages to swell. Food allergies usually become obvious within two hours of consuming the food allergen. <bio>http://www.whatcauseallergy.com </bio>

Can I Give Myself "Immunotherapy" by Intentionally Being Exposed to the Allergen?

No, if you are allergic to a substance such as Chinese elm, you will not overcome your allergy by repeatedly inhaling Chinese elm pollen into your nose or lungs. So then, how can a series of injections allergen relieve your allergy symptoms?

Allergen immunotherapy is almost like a vaccine. Your body responds to the injected amounts of a particular allergen, given in gradually increasing doses, by developing an immunity or tolerance to the allergen(s).

As a result of these immune changes, immunotherapy can lead to decreased, minimal or no allergy symptoms when you are exposed to the allergen(s) included in the allergy vaccine.

What is the Immunotherapy Process?

There generally are two phases to immunotherapy: a build-up phase and a maintenance phase.

Build-up phase is the initial period of receiving injections with increasing amounts of the allergens. The frequency of injections during this phase generally ranges from 1 to 2 times a week. The duration of this phase depends on the frequency of the injections but generally ranges from 3 to 6 months.

Maintenance phase begins when the effective therapeutic dose has been reached. The effective maintenance dose is different for each person, depending on individual sensitivity (how `allergic they are' to the vaccine) and their response to the immunotherapy build-up phase. Once the maintenance dose is reached, there will be longer periods of time between immunotherapy treatments. The intervals between maintenance injections, generally ranges from every 2 to 4 weeks. Your allergist/immunologist will determine what range is most appropriate for you.

Reduced allergy symptoms are not normally immediate or dramatic. Improvement with immunotherapy is usually a progressive, cumulative effect that happens slowly throughout the immunotherapy treatment period. Effectiveness of immunotherapy appears to be related to length of treatment and the dose of the allergen.

Does Immunotherapy Ever Fail?

Most individuals receive at least some benefit from the treatment. However, it is 100% guaranteed to be effective for everyone. Failure to respond to immunotherapy may be due to several factors including:

Inadequate dose of allergen in the allergy vaccine. Missing allergens not identified during the allergy evaluation. High levels of allergen in environment (i.e. inadequate environmental control). Significant exposure to non-allergic triggers (i.e. tobacco smoke).

If there is no improvement after a year of maintenance immunotherapy, possible reasons for failure to respond should be explored. If no apparent reason is found then discontinuation of immunotherapy should be considered and other treatment options should be pursued.

How Long Does Immunotherapy Last?

When immunotherapy happens successfully, maintenance treatment is generally lasts around 3 to 5 years. The decision to stop immunotherapy should be thoroughly discussed with your allergist/immunologist after 3 to 5 years of treatment. Some individuals may experience long-lasting remission of their symptoms, but others may relapse after discontinuing immunotherapy. Therefore, the decision to stop immunotherapy is an individual one, after consulting with your allergist/immunologist.

Are There Risks or Side Effects?

A report from the Mayo Clinic on 79,593 immunotherapy injections over a 10-year period showed the incidence of adverse reactions to be less than two-tenths of 1 percent (0.137 percent). Most of these reactions were mild and responded to immediate medical treatment. There were no fatalities.

However, it is possible to have an adverse reaction. There are two types of reactions that can occur with immunotherapy: local and/or systemic reactions.

Local reactions are relatively common and can show up as redness and swelling at the injection site. This may happen immediately, or a few hours after the treatment.

Systemic reactions are much less common. Systemic reactions are usually mild and respond rapidly to medications. Symptoms can include increased allergy symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion or hives. Rarely, a serious systemic reaction, called anaphylaxis, can develop after an immunotherapy injection. In addition to the symptoms associated with a mild systemic reaction, symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction can include swelling in the throat, wheezing or a sensation of tightness in the chest, nausea, dizziness or other symptoms. Systemic reactions require immediate treatment. Most serious systemic reactions develop within 30 minutes of the allergy injections and this is why it is usually recommended that you wait in the office for 30 minutes after your allergy injections. It is for your own safety. Allergist/immunologists are trained to monitor for reactions, as is members of his or her staff able to identify and treat systemic reactions.

Guidelines for safe and effective immunotherapy

Although side effects are rare, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology offers the following guidelines to ensure the safety of any patient receiving immunotherapy:

Only an allergist/immunologist or other physician who is expertly trained in the therapy should prescribe immunotherapy.

Immunotherapy should be administered under the supervision of an allergist-immunologist or other physician specifically trained in immunotherapy, the early signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, and appropriate emergency procedures and medications. Patients must be suitably selected for immunotherapy. Immunotherapy should be given only in facilities equipped to treat anaphylaxis. The health status of the patient should be evaluated prior to every injection. Patients who are acutely ill, especially with asthma or respiratory difficulties, should not receive immunotherapy until their disease is stabilized. Patients should always be asked about current medications prior to immunotherapy, to avoid interactions with beta-blockers and other conflicting medications. Patients must wait at the health care facility a minimum of 20 minutes after an allergen injection. The time period may be extended for high-risk patients.

Who Decides If a Patient Should Receive Immunotherapy Treatment?

Ultimately the decision about whether or not to receive immunology treatment is up to the individual and their family, although the allergist has the expertise to help his or her patient understand what options are most appropriate according to their individual needs. <bio>Visit http://www.utahallergies.com/allergy-info/allergy-information/immunotherapy= ..html to find out more about allergies and allergy treatment. </bio>

Allergies are the result of a person's body having hypersensitivity which could be due to something that is ingested or applied to the body or even something in the air that you breath. The substance or condition that causes the allergy is called the allergen. There is almost no limit to what can be an allergen as everyone reacts differently to different substances.

Food allergies are still the most common allergy that people experience. Although any type of food can cause a reaction, often life threatening, the food that causes the most problems are nuts (especially peanuts). Probably the next most common food allergy is that caused by dairy products - usually milk or cheese but it could be anything that is made from milk.

A few people are even known to have an allergy to chocolate. Allergies to things we eat usually affect breathing, digestion and the ability to resist disease. Fish and other types of seafood can also have an adverse effect and some people put themselves at risk knowing they have a allergy but enjoy the food so much they still eat it. Reactions to these type of foods are generally seen as more serious.

The effects of food aleergies vary. Some foods just bring the individual out in rashes or cause the skin to itch. Oranges, lemons, limes and other citrus fruits often cause this type of reaction. A peanut allergy can on the other hand, be very severe and it might even result in death by just contact with a peanut so an allergy test would prove to be very helpful in case of peanuts and even other nuts for that matter as they can be among the most dangerous of all allergies.

Flowers are one of the most beautiful parts of nature but even these can also prove to be dangerous for people who are allergic to pollen formed in certain flowers and even certain kinds of weeds and grass can affect respiratory system which can cause severe damage and problems with breathing. Of course this situation can often be quickly rectified by getting away from the flowers, but until an allergy test is performed, there is no guarantee that the flowers are to blame.

Certain drugs might cause adverse reactions in the patient resulting in complications resulting in irritation, swelling of face and body, breaking out into hives etc. These are some of the well noticed symptoms, but some drugs might cause internal allergies that take some time to detect and cure. The most frequent drug related allergy is that of chemical sulfur which is a component in many drugs, so a doctor must be aware of this before any other drugs are administered.

Although a reaction to nickel is not unusual to most people, a very small number of individuals even have an allergic skin reaction to silver and gold. Metal allergies can cause many skin related symptoms including hives, rashes or the skin turning a deep red in the affected area and even swelling.

Normally, avoiding metals that cause problems is enough but if you have an allergy to any substance, there is every chance it could get worse or even incorporate new substances so taking an allergy test on a regular basis is the best form of prevention.

If you suspect you might be seriously allergic to any of these substances then it is very important to get tested so that a health professional can put in place a plan to help you overcome the problem.<bio>Why not consider seeing a naturopath for a natural alternative to helping your allergies?
While most forms of allergy only cause misery, an extreme reaction to an allergen can possibly result in death. Those who suffer this type of allergy reaction, commonly referred to as anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock, must receive allergy treatment immediately. It is important to recognize the symptoms of anaphylaxis so you can offer the lifesaving treatment these people need.

Anaphylaxis can occur when a person is exposed to a substance they are allergic to. There reactions come on quickly and their symptoms are often life threatening. Perhaps the most common forms of allergic reaction that results in anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock are those from bee stings.

However, patients with food allergies who ingest a food they are allergic to can also suffer an anaphylactic reaction. It should be noted there is a difference between the terms anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock. Anaphylaxis refers simply to a severe allergy reaction while anaphylactic shock is the most extreme form of anaphylaxis. This type of shock will result in death in just a few moments if help is not sought right away.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis include trouble breathing, low blood pressure, itching, and swelling of the mouth, face, neck and throat. The allergy sufferer may also become flushed, develop hives or even become unconscious. The most dangerous symptom is the swelling around the throat which can cause the airway to become restricted. Because of this swelling, rescue breathing - which is the part of CPR where one person helps the other person breathe - may not be successful.

If you or someone you know is prone to anaphylaxis be prepared in case you suffer a reaction. Be sure those around you know what to do in the case you have a reaction and aren't able to speak. For those who suffer these reactions regularly, you doctor may prescribe an anaphylaxis kit. These kits include a shot of epinephrine which can help save a person suffering from a severe reaction.

The epinephrine is a form of adrenaline that speeds up your heart beat and helps keep your airways from constricting. If your doctor prescribes a kit for you, keep it with you at all times. Also, check it regularly to make sure the shot is still in date as an out of date shot may not be potent enough to help your reaction.

If you suspect someone is suffering anaphylaxis and they don't have an epinephrine shot, there are some things you can do to help them. First, get them to a hospital or medical facility as soon as possible. If necessary, call an ambulance, they may be able to get to you more quickly than you can drive to the hospital.

While you are waiting for the ambulance, try giving the person an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl). This will combat the histamines that are causing the reaction. Liquid diphenhydramine is best, but if all you have are capsules, break the capsules open and give the person the powder out of them directly. This way the medicine will immediately enter the person's bloodstream instead of having to wait for the capsule to dissolve.

Anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock are both dangerous, possibly life threatening situations. Be familiar with the symptoms of this dangerous condition so that you can recognize if someone is suffering anaphylaxis and you can get this person the allergy treatment they need. <bio>For more information on allergies try visiting http://www.theallergyeffect.com - a website that specializes in providing allergy related tips, advice and resources to including information on allergy treatment. </bio>

Among the allergies rampant in American lives today, food allergy is one of the top three. However, some people misdiagnose food allergy as food intolerance. There are certain similarities but one must be careful in administering medicines to a person with an allergy.

The wrong medicine for the wrong condition can increase the allergic symptom resulting in anaphylaxis and even death. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction where all the symptoms swiftly attack the entire body all at the same time.

Symptoms Of Food Allergy

Food allergy is an allergic reaction to certain types of food. The most common food allergens are: cow's milk, wheat, peanuts and other tree nuts, eggs, fish, soybeans, shellfish, meat and certain types of drugs. The allergic reaction can vary depending on the type of allergen but they have the same number of symptoms:

- Rashes or hives begins to appear on the skin. In extreme cases, the swelling and hives can spread to the entire body. - Swelling of the certain areas near the mouth. - Swelling of the ear - Redness and itchiness of the eyes. - Runny nose - Vomiting and diarrhea - Difficulty in breathing and wheezing, sometime signs of asthma

Food intolerance has much of the same symptoms except the runny nose and watery eyes. Most often, food intolerance results in diarrhea and swelling of certain areas of the body.

Aside for the similarities in symptoms, a food allergy is more severe than food intolerance. Someone with food intolerance can eat small portions of the food he is allergic to. They can still enjoy the food, though in small quantities. But to a person with food allergy, that small portion can immediately trigger an allergic reaction. And if not treated at once, the patients can go into anaphylaxis.

What makes a food allergy more life threatening is because of the immediate threat to the person. Someone with food allergy can have an anaphylactic shock and start to experience the swelling of the throat muscles. This can block the air passage of the person and could result to death.

Another real danger is the sharp drop in the blood pressure of the patient. In this case, the person with food allergy may experience mental confusion and dizziness.

Food Allergy Treatment

A food allergy can be treated as soon as the symptom occurs. For rashes, there are skin creams available to ease the swelling and itchiness. The antihistamines will give relief to symptoms of runny nose, watery eyes and swelling. These medicines can be bought right in the local drugstores and does not require a prescription.

For those who experience the severe food allergy reactions, a dose of epinephrine (adrenaline), either self- injected or given by the doctor can immediately reverse the symptoms. As of now, a shot of epinephrine is the most effective treatment for food allergy and other types of allergies.

Preventing Food Allergy

Although food allergies cannot be prevented, the best way to defeat it is by staying away from the food a person is allergic to. Taking a risk will only cost you more pain in the future. So it is best to see the doctor to get a proper diagnosis and guidelines on what to eat and what not to eat.

Making the right diagnosis on food allergy versus food intolerance can be tricky. It all depends on how severe the allergic reactions are and the number of symptoms that show up on the person when exposed to the food allergen. <bio>Charlene J. Nuble 2006. If a hive appears it would be assumed you are allergic to that particular allergen which makes it easier for you to form a workable plan to help keep your allergies under control.

Environmental factors have become a big problem causing all kinds of allergic reactions. Sometimes your allergy treatment can be as simple as avoiding the environmental factor you are allergic to which can significantly reduce the number of reactions.

There are many medications that can be used to help treat your allergies. A common allergy treatment might be a decongestant or antihistamine or a combination of the two which can reduce the symptoms. There are many over the counter formulas.

If you are looking for an allergy treatment that is much more natural you will be happy to know that there are some excellent homeopathic and natural medicine formulas worth trying. Many work on boosting the immune system so that it can better handle the allergies without assistance.

Sometimes anti-inflammatory medications and corticosteroids are also used. They can be a very useful allergy treatment for airways that are inflamed and corticosteroids are often found in nasal sprays.

Another allergy treatment is the allergy shot which is used for people suffering with allergies in the moderate to severe range. It is frequently used if the substance is almost impossible to avoid or that occurs all year round. They are usually given weekly and contain a small amount of the allergen designed to help build the patients immune system against the allergen.

Each week the amount of allergen is increased slightly and this allergy treatment is generally given over as many as 5 years. This is a very old type of treatment and there may be better ways to accomplish this by simply building ones immune system.

If you are a wine drinker you may be drinking more than just grapes. Your wine might include egg and fish proteins as well as traces of milk. They may also contain traces of nuts, wheat, soybeans, and fish all of which are common allergens and some such as nuts can be very dangerous. The only allergy treatment here may be to avoid your favorite wine. The government is looking to pass legislation so that wine products come with a standard warning -- this product may contain traces of.... Many people have food allergies but few would think to look in their wine.

Dust mites are one of the major causes of allergies and asthma. These little creatures are microscopic and found in carpets, upholstery, and bedding. They are even more common in humid and coastal climates. The allergy treatment for this type of allergy can include using HEPA filters, vacuuming frequently, using allergen covers on the mattresses and pillows, and reducing the moisture in the air since dust mites can't live in dry air.

There are many causes of allergies and the best allergy treatment will depend on the allergy itself. However as a first line of defense why not try natural products which are far less invasive to the body and many work great! <bio>Get all the latest information about Allergies from the only true source at </bio>

My sister recently lost her cat Topaz. She had been a long time member of our extended family. As much as my kids loved her they experienced cat allergy symptoms whenever they went to visit their aunt. Both my children have mild asthma which typically means they are going to be allergic to cats. My sister actually has asthma herself but she loved Topaz enough to manage through her cat allergy symptoms.

You don't necessarily need to see an allergist to determine whether you are allergic to cats. The allergic reaction is usually immediate upon entering a room with a cat or cats. So it doesn't take much to put the dots together. Can you get rid of your cat allergy symptoms without getting rid of your feline friend? First we need to identify your symptoms.

Common Cat Allergy Symptoms

*Uncontrollable Sneezing *Watery Eyes *Wheezing *Hives *Eczema

An allergy to cats is caused by contact with the dander and the saliva that are in the air. They may also be on surfaces where you sit or sleep or even in the carpets around your house. Cats lick their fur when they are cleaning themselves and when that happens they deposit a protein on their fur that is the actual allergen. Cat allergy symptoms can be experienced in areas where you might not expect. Due to the nature of the allergen it can stick to clothes and hands and can therefore appear in the office or other places where cats are not allowed.

You can attempt to treat your symptoms with medications but for cat allergies it is best to consult with a doctor. Antihistamine medications and allergy eye drops may help. If your cat allergy symptoms can not be managed it may be time to consider giving your cat away. This is a last option but may be your only resort particularly if anyone in the family suffers from asthma. Their symptoms, like wheezing, are more serious and therefore be the bigger priority.

If your cat allergy symptoms are mild or moderate and you can't imagine finding a new home for your feline family member here are some tips that may minimize your allergic reactions.

1. Get an air purifier with a HEPA filter 2. Keep your cat out of your bedroom where you spend the most time 3. Try to contain your cat to certain areas of the house 4. Vacuum your carpets with HEPA Vacuum Cleaner at least 2 times a week 5. Wash your hands after touching your cat

Cat allergy symptoms can come between you and your cat but if you really care about him you can do everything possible to manage your symptoms. Please keep in mind that new treatments are always being researched and keeping up to date on these may help you find the ultimate cure. <bio>Marilyn Franklin writes for http://www.allergyfiles.com where you can find more info on cat allergies. </bio>

Usually, substances such as pollen, animal dander, and dust are harmless. However, some of us have an immune system that believes these ordinary substances are a threat. In response, the body creates antibodies normally reserved for fighting true dangers, such as bacteria and viruses. Since the immune system incorrectly believes the allergen to be threat, it begins to create an immune response as if it were fighting off an illness. The immune system's response is what causes nearly all allergy symptoms.

There are a wide range of symptoms associated with allergies, and none of them are very pleasant. Allergy symptoms can range from very mild to life-threatening. If you suffer from allergies, you are not alone. Allergies, and other hypersensitivity reactions, currently affect approximately 30% of the population. The following is a list of some common allergy symptoms:

Nasal Symptoms are a common allergic reaction to a variety of allergens. Sometimes called Allergic rhinitis, or "hayfever", these symptoms afflict 20% of the US population and are often a result of airborne pollens, dander, dust or other allergens. Some common nasal allergy symptoms include:

Nasal Congestion (Stuffiness) Sneezing Runny nose Itchy nose Impaired Sense of Smell Swollen Nasal Membrain Sinus Headaches Sore Throat (caused by nasal drip)

Skin Symptoms like hives, contact dermatitis, and exema (charachterized by inflamed, itchy or dry skin) are all relatively common forms of allergic reactions. Usually these types of skin symptoms occur when the skin comes into direct contact with an allergen, or it can be an immune response to eating food that you're allergic too. Some of these conditions can cause small, reddish bumps. They are caused by an inflammatory reaction, causing leakage from the capillaries of your skin.

Eye Symptoms, or Allergic conjunctivitis, is a common allergic reaction to many different types of allergens and can be caused by an allergen physically getting in the eyes, such as dust, or as a side-effect of a food allergy. It is caused when the conjunctiva (the membrane covering the white part of the eye) enflames due to allergy. One of the most common causes is hay fever. Symptoms consist of redness (mainly due to the swelling of small blood vessels), itching and increased tear production.

Ear pain, especially in children, is often a result of fluid building up pressure behind the eardrum. The middle ear is connected to the nasal passages by a short narrow tube, known as the Eustachian tube. The Eustachian tube drains fluids out of the middle ear, and helps keep the pressure of the ear equalized. Allergies can cause inflammation of the Eustachian tube, and cause secretions to build up, preventing the normal flow of fluid. This happens more often with children, because their Eustachian tube is shorter. These accumulating fluids can cause stuffiness, pain, hearing loss, and ear infections.

Headaches are not as common as other allergy symptoms, but some individuals will experience headaches, whether alone or in conjunction with other symptoms like nasal congestion.

Fatigue (tired feeling) can be caused by the immune response that you body is creating. Just like when you're sick, it takes a lot of energy for you body to get better. Even though you are not technically sick, your body thinks you are. That's what makes you feel so tired. In addition, some allergy medications can cause additional drowsiness.

Food Allergy Reactions happen when your body mistakes certain foods as harmful, and the reaction can become more severe every time the food allergen is encountered, but sometimes children can outgrow mild food allergies. Allergic reactions to food usually happen within a few minutes of eating the offending food, but it can sometimes take several hours to develop, which can make it hard to know which food is causing the allergy. It is very important to have it diagnosed if you suspect that you may have a food allergy, so that you can know for certain which foods to avoid. The first symptom of an allergic reaction to food is often itching and swelling in the mouth, tongue and throat. Some other common food allergy symptoms are:

skin reactions- hives, swelling, itching, eczema and redness vomiting diarrhea coughing, wheezing or a runny nose swelling of the lips sore, red and itchy eyes

Severe Symptoms, known as Anaphylaxis, can be life-threatening. It consists of a series of reactions in which the entire body's response to the allergen comes on suddenly. It can begins with sudden itching of the eyes or face and within minutes can progress to more serious symptoms, including:

Swelling of the esophagus which can make breathing and swallowing difficult Abdominal pain and cramping Vomiting Diarrhea or bowel irritation Mental confusion and/or dizziness

How Can You Know if Your Symptoms are Allergies or a Cold?

Allergies, colds and flus all share many of the same symptoms like congestion (stuffy nose), runny nose, and sneezing. One way to tell is that colds do not usually last longer than 10 days. If your symptoms carry on longer than then, then you may be experiencing allergy symptoms. Another clue can be "itchiness". Allergies often cause an itchy sensation in either your eyes or nose. Your allergy doctor can help determine the cause of your symptoms and how to treat them. Here are some simple guidelines.

It's probably an allergy if:

You have no fever. Mucus secretions are clear and runny. Sneezes occur in a rapid, multiple sequence. Your nose, ears, and throat feel itchy (especially the palate or roof of your mouth). Symptoms last longer than the typical duration of a cold (which is usually 7 to 10 days). Your symptoms get worse when you are in one environment, and get better when you are not in that environment. Your nose, ears, and throat are not as itchy after you take an antihistamine. You feel stuffy and congested. Take the Congestion Test to see if you need treatment.

It may be a cold or the flu if:

You have a fever. Your symptoms occur all together =97 normal allergy symptoms tend to appear more gradually. You have a sore throat. Your symptoms last only 7 to 10 days. <bio>Visit http://www.utahallergies.com for more information. </bio>

It is helpful to know about your allergy testing options before you go to the doctor. The type of allergy testing depends on what you suspect you are allergic to and the severity of your reaction. Some tests work better than others depending on your case. Your allergy testing map ends at 3 different destinations.

The 3 type of tests are:

*Scratch Tests *Elimination Diets *Blood Tests

Scratch tests are the most common form of allergy testing conducted today. The results can be seen as quickly as twenty minutes. The actual test is conducted by placing a small amount of the suspected allergen onto the surface of the skin, usually along the spine or on the upper arm. The patient is then scratched or pricked on the same area allowing some of the substance to penetrate the skin. The area is then observed to see whether the patient has an allergic reaction such as swelling, redness or itching. This method of allergy testing is quick and can cover quite a range of possible allergens. That is why it is particularly good when you don't know what your allergies are. The test works well for insect bites, airborne allergens like pollen and food allergies as well.

Specific food allergies can be tested by using a different form of allergy testing that puts a patient on an elimination diet. For a period of several weeks the range of foods suspected of causing the allergy are eliminated from the patients diet. Then each food is then reintroduced individually to see whether the allergy symptoms come back. Of course, this method of allergy testing is better for mild food allergies. If you get severe allergic reactions bordering on anaphylactic shock then you should skip this test and the scratch tests and immediately go to your next option.

The last form of allergy testing on our list is a RAST(radioallergosorbent test) which most people just classify as a blood test. Blood is drawn from the patient and is then sent to a lab for testing. The blood is examined for the presence of immunoglobulin (IgE) antibodies. The presence of these antibodies indicates whether the body's immune system is causing the body to have an allergic reaction. Elevated levels of these IgE's can tell your doctor whether you are allergic to certain types of allergens. This type of allergy testing has been known to not be as precise or accurate as other methods.

The last type of test that is provocation or challenge tests. This is where a doctor exposes you directly to what you think you are allergic to so that your reaction can be monitored. This can be very dangerous so definitely don't try this at home. Your reaction may be more severe than you think. This type of allergy testing is of course not that common.

In conclusion you should be prepared when you go in for your testing. The doctor will ask you for a thorough medical history and depending on the testing involved may ask you to stop taking any sort of medicine you have been taking to treat the symptoms of your allergies. This will make the allergy testing more effective. <bio>Marilyn Franklin is a writer for http://www.allergyfiles.com where you can also find information on allergy medicine. </bio>

If you're having difficulties that appear to be initiated by what you consume, pay vigilance to the symptoms to work out if you have a nourishment allergic reaction. That manner, you can have your difficulty correctly treated.

As unusually, hypersensitivity reaction is the most long-familiar symptom of nourishment allergies. This is when some allergy evidences arrive on rapidly and happen all at a time. This can be very unsafe, and if not handled directly, can even outcome in decease.

While most persons believe of nourishment allergies, they consider of certain thing severe. As most persons who are powerfully allergic are very aware of when they are having a response, there are persons with gentle allergies who don't even understand they're having one. Here are some of the more usual, but less critical nourishment allergy evidences:

* Itching

* Efflorescence

* Cephalalgia

* Itching, watery eyes

* Upset breadbasket

Particularly with more gentle responses, evidences can change with time and journey through your physical structure as the nourishment does. You may seem ill to your breadbasket at the start, then subsequent have a response in the bowels. Evidences can take some time to evolve if the starting of your alimentary canal doesn't respond, and can boost as the nourishment moves through your organic structure.

The best manner to work out if you have a milder allergic reaction is to hold a nourishment diary. Just drop a line everything you consume and how you're sensing. Then go on and regard at unnatural evidences or times you're feeling sick. You may find they're began by a certain food.

Invariably reconsider your diary with a medical practitioner because they are better trained to identify a reaction. For example, if you had a response after consuming a food with some components, you likely have no estimation which one is initiating you to be ill. It could even be a little allowance of chemical compound or other component you didn't recognize was in the food. A medical practitioner can help slender down the alternatives founded on symptoms and then run examinations.

After considering your symptoms, your medical practitioner will do a skin allergy test. This engages putting a little allowance of fluid encompassing the allergen on your skin, generally on your back, and then piercing the skin. Don't try to check yourself for allergies, particularly if your response is severe. If you were to have a farthest response, a doctor's bureau is the best location to be so you can be treated at once.

As nourishment may be initiating your symptoms, that doesn't inevitably signify that you are allergic to that food. Frequently persons who respond to a nourishment often are easily incapable to digest the nourishment correctly or have some other digestive issue. That's another significant argue to visit your doctor.
If you are one of the individuals who suffer from gluten allergy you will need to avoid certain foods, particularly wheat, rye, barley and oats. These foods contain gluten in which is the allergen responsible for a gluten allergy sufferer. The problem with this substance is that it is a key component in baked foods such as bread, in fact it is responsible for giving dough its binding properties. In this article we take a closer look at gluten allergy.

Gluten is a protein, it doesn't cause any problems for the average person when consumed, but if you have a gluten allergy it's a different story. When suffering from an allergic reaction to gluten in some individuals may experience minor symptoms whilst others may suffer more severe symptom that have the potential to be fatal. Some of the most common symptoms of gluten allergy include swelling, cramps, asthma, vomiting, hives, nausea and swelling amongst other symptoms.

Pinpointing the cause of an allergic reaction is a pretty straightforward process. Let's say someone has an allergic reaction after consuming gluten, and he or she goes to the doctor. The doctor will either conduct a blood test or a skin prick test. The results of these tests will reveal whether or not the allergic reaction was a result of gluten allergy.

As mentioned earlier some people have minor allergies to gluten, whilst others could potentially die as a result of a gluten allergy. The method of treatment depends on how the gluten allergy affects the individual. For example, if a person suffers from minor symptoms during an allergic reaction, they may be advised to only eat small amounts of wheat as this may stop allergic reactions in future. This individual may also be given medication such as an allergy shot. However if an individual suffers from major symptoms during an allergic reaction, they are usually advised not to consume products that contain gluten full stop.

If a child suffers from a gluten allergy he or she is treated differently than an adult with the same allergy, reasons being young children have a tendency to grow out of allergies, but adults don't.

A condition that is commonly confused with being a gluten allergy is Coeliac Disease, this is not an allergy, it is infact a disorder that can be inherited, and it is characterized by the damaging effect it has on the immune system. If an individual with Coeliac Disease consumes gluten, the lining of the small intestine gets damaged. As a result the small intestine loses its ability to absorb nutrients and vitamins effectively and this causes a whole host of other problems for the unfortunate individual.

The way that the body reacts to this hereditary disorder differs for children and adults, for children the symptoms can be anything from poor appetite to stunted growth. In adults the symptoms include weight loss, diarrhea and constipation amongst others.

Anyone suffering from gluten allergy is strongly advised to seek medical advice, doing so will allow a health professional to give you a proper diagnosis of your condition, as a result you'll find out whether or not it is necessary for you to eliminate gluten from your diet. <bio>For more information on allergies head over to http://www.allergyrelieffacts.com, where you can also find out about natural allergy relief and natural allergy remedies. </bio>

Your dog's body has a remarkable immune system of antibodies, which are protein substances produced by cells called lymphocytes, that destroy antigens that invade the body, such as viruses and bacteria.

This system can become supersensitive to such foreign particles as flea saliva, pollen, house dust, and wool, however, and this super sensitivity can produce chemicals that cause an allergy, a severe inflammatory reaction. Allergenic inhalant dermatitis has been well documented in dogs. It is caused by a super sensitivity to certain particles in the air, such as pollen from trees, ragweed, grass, and other plants, house dust, feathers, and wool.

The allergy follows a predictable history:

1. It is inherited, so if the parents had it, the offspring probably will too. 2. It is seasonal -- the signs appear about the same time every year. 3. The signs begin between six months and three years of age. 4. The signs include severe biting and scratching, licking the paws, sneezing, rubbing the face, and generalized redness of the skin.

Home treatment is directed toward symptomatic relief and avoiding the foreign particle, or allergen. Bathing your dog with a mild shampoo, (such as baby shampoo) will soothe any skin inflammation and remove any allergens on the hair coat. Calamine lotion can be applied to the irritated skin, and hydrogen peroxide (3 percent), and antibiotic ointments are also helpful.

Your veterinarian will take time to get a good history. He or she may be able to identify the allergen in your pet's environment. If allergic inhalant dermatitis is the problem, most veterinarians at this time use a low dose of steroids to relieve the signs. However, steroids, even in low dose, should mot be given for long-term treatment because they have some very serious side effects.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns do not be afraid to contact your veterinarian. <bio>Randy Jones and his partner Brent Jones have been in the pet industry for a long time.
For those who suffer any type of food allergy eating at a restaurant, or even eating at someone else's home can be can be like taking their lives into their own hands. Symptoms of food allergies can range from mild rashes to life threatening anaphylactic reactions. Ingesting even a small bit of the food that causes an allergic reaction can be deadly for the allergy sufferer.

Foods that most commonly trigger an allergic reaction include shellfish, fish, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, milk and eggs.

Since such a small amount of these substances are required to start a serious allergic reaction those who live with food allergies have to be very careful where they eat and what they eat.

There are various ways the ingredients that cause allergic reactions can sneak into the food we eat every day even if we try to avoid them. The following are some things you should take into consideration if you suffer a food allergy.

If you have an allergy to milk, be sure the person who cuts your meat at the deli hasn't previously used to machine to cut cheese as this cheese residue may find its way into your meat. Also, check your food labels carefully for the ingredient in case this is a milk derivative.

Finally, some restaurants use butter in their marinade for steaks. If you suffer with a milk allergy, be sure to request they skip the butter when cooking your food.

For those who suffer peanut allergies, you already know how hard it can be to avoid peanuts or peanut oils. There are many times when peanuts are reflavored and passed off as a different type of nut. Be sure you always read product labels carefully.

Also, sunflower seeds may also be processed on the same equipment as peanuts meaning the seeds may contain some peanut oil residue. When eating out, be aware that any type of ethnic food may contain or be contaminated with peanut oils. It is always better to pass on a particular food than suffer a life threatening reaction.

Allergies to fish and shell fish are also common. If you suffer these types of allergies, it is best to stay away from steak sauce as well as some Caesar dressings as they may contain anchovies, a type of fish.

Again, read food labels carefully before eating anything suspicious. When dining in a restaurant that serves fish, inform the waitperson of your allergies so that special precautions can be taken to keep you from getting sick.

Since soybeans and soy-based products have become so popular in American foods, it is difficult to remove this food from your diet entirely. If you suffer from an allergy to soy products, be sure you know the foods you are eating are soy-free.

Since such a variety of foods contain this ingredient, however, you may find it difficult to eat a healthy diet and avoid soy. You may want to consult a dietician for advice on how to handle your allergy and still eat a healthy diet.

In order to keep from suffering a dangerous allergic reaction, it is important to keep in mind that your allergen may be hiding in the least expected places. Be aware of these hidden sources of allergy-causing foods. If you suffer a food allergy being vigilant can save your life. <bio>For more information on allergies try visiting http://www.theallergyeffect.com - a website that specializes in providing allergy related tips, advice and resources to including information on food allergy. </bio>
