Internet radio is occasionally an overlooked feature of the Internet. The act of broadcasting music over the Internet in this way is referred to as streaming music and there are many stations that offer streaming over the Internet. You will often find that your favorite terrestrial station can be found online, but there are just as many radio stations that are transmitted solely over the Internet. One of the biggest benefits of Internet radio is that the data is transmitted over the Internet making it possible to listen to radio stations from all over the world. Expatriates find this particularly beneficial.

Similarly, though, it is also cheaper to produce music over the Internet and this means that smaller stations with a smaller fan base than mainstream radio requires are able to run their own radio station. This makes it perfect for those who like particular genres of music to find exactly what they are looking for.

Internet Talk Radio was the first ever Internet radio service and was established in 1993 and in 1995 the first radio service published only on the Internet was introduced -- Radio HK. Since then the number of stations opening on the Internet has increased dramatically. Peercasting, or P2P technology, makes it even easier to start an Internet radio station so it is likely that there will be even more stations in the near future.

Internet radio is perfect for people in small towns that are monopolized by only two or three radio stations and are forced to listen to one playlist of songs over and over. With internet radio the possibility of gaining access to music that a person likes is greatly increased.

Whether you are looking for radio broadcasts from countries miles away or you want to listen to one particular genre of music you can be virtually assured of finding a station that caters to your needs. You can even find chat stations that deal with one particular topic. The quality of sound and the quality of the programs distributed are both excellent. If you haven't tried Internet Radio before, you should try it now. About The Author: Lavinia Snider is the editor of internet Radio Guide. Find out everything about internet radio.
What is the purpose of free radio stations? Free radio stations are way to listen to music without the advertisement and commercials from the major corporations. Now not all free radio stations are ad or commercial free, some radio stations do have ads and commercials. These are still free radio stations but free in a different way. These radio stations are free for you to listen to but they still charge for advertisement and commercial time.

The radio stations which charge for advertisement and commercial space differ big time from the radio stations which do not have advertisement or commercial space. First off radio stations which charge for ads and commercials have to cater to their sponsors. Don't you hate it when you are listening to a radio station and they go to commercial every 7 minutes? That is because they have to make room for all of their sponsor's ads and commercials to air. Normally the higher the ratings the more sponsor ads and commercials. Radio Stations which charge for on air ads and commercials cater to their paid advertisers. That is how they make their money. Before Howard Stern went to Satellite Radio if you ever watched his show you would notice how every 5 mins he would have to go to a commercial break, plus he was heavily censored on what he could say and what he could not say. The reason for this is two-fold. First Howard Stern had the number 1 show on the radio, so CBS was charging top dollar to get ad or commercial time during his show. The more commercial slots CBS could fill in the more money they made. Which butchered the show because they would go to a commercial break every five minutes. Now on the censorship, the big deal with censorship is the CBS company does not want Howard Stern to offend viewers. Not because they have high moral grounds but because they are afraid they may lose sponsors willing to pay for airtime on his show. Just look at what happened with Don Imus or Michael Vick, major corporations pulled the plug right away on the both of them because they did not want to lose customer sales.

With radio stations that charge for airtime there are many fine lines and politics they must follow. With radio stations who do not charge for airtime space they are in more control of what they play and what they say. The only problem with them is they do not normally make the same amount of income the larger stations make since they do not charge for airtime space. No matter which types of free radio stations you decide to listen to, just know when a station does not play commercials or play ads, you will get a better radio experience.

Free radio stations are the route many consumers are going since paid radio stations have way too many commercials. With free radio stations you will not have to listen to all of the garbage that goes along with them. <bio>This article was written by Aaron Aldama.
If you're not familiar with HD Radio, it's the hot digital technology that's being pushed by radio broadcasters as the next big thing and the savior of terrestrial radio.

The Good

First, the good news. HD Radio does sound better than regular radio. In fact, HD AM sounds almost as good as FM radio, and FM sounds almost as bright, clear and interference free as if you were listening to a CD. And because HD is digital, broadcasters can squeeze more signals into the same frequency. This allows them to broadcast different programs on what they're calling HD2 channels. For example, an oldies station could program contemporary CandW on its normal frequency, and old-time CandW on its HD2 channel.

More good news is that fact that, depending on who you believe, there are now either 1,300 to1,500 stations in the U.S. that are broadcasting HD Radio.

The difference? It's that he HD Radio Alliance claims there are 1,500 HD stations, but the FCC has only 1,300 licenses on file.

The bad news

While HD Radio may sound great and while there at least 1,300 stations broadcasting HD Radio, you can't hear them. That is, not unless you purchase an HD radio. And HD radios tend to be expensive. There is only one, inexpensive, entry-level tabletop available, the Radiosophy HD100 at $99.95. The next step up is RadioShack's Accurian HD Radio, which usually sells for about $199 and a Sony unit at $199.95. Beyond that, there is the Sangean HDR-1 with a manufacturer's suggested retail of $249, and then it's pretty much into the stratosphere of $300-plus.

Want HD radio in your car? The situation there is even worse. There are very few HD car radios available and most of them are only tuners and must be connected to your existing factory radio =96 an ugly solution at best.

The ugliest part of th HD2 channels is that the programming =96at least so far =96 is hardly good enough or creative enough to warrant buying a HD radio.

What makes it ugly is that the broadcaster could be using HD2 channels to do something really exciting as broadcasters have in Great Britain, where digital radio has just skyrocketed. Unfortunately, here in the U.S., most broadcasters have chosen to use their HD2 channels as just "variations on a theme," or variations of their regular programming (see rock station example, above).

So, what's the future of HD Radio? At this point, it doesn't seem great, especially when you compare it to satellite and Internet radio. But as they used to say, "stay tuned for more" because it could get brighter. <bio>Douglas Hanna is the editor and publisher of the highly popular website, http://www.hd-radio-home.com, which he believes is the Internet's number one site for fair and balanced news about HD radio.
My satellite radio is just about the best toys that I bought myself in a long time. No more spending the majority of my driving time switching between stations, with a satellite radio, I can choose exactly what I want, when I want it.

The units that receive the satellite signal in the home are rather limited but the ones for the car, well that's another story. Here are some tips for selecting satellite radio for your car.

Buying an after market radio that has a satellite receiver built in is the easiest way to add satellite radio to your car in my opinion. My husband went the route of adding a simple satellite receiver to his existing radio. The drawback was, not only did it take awhile to install it came out messy.

Aftermarket radios, can be purchased to bring in just the satellite signal, AM/FM radio stations, CD or it can come, as I selected, with all three built in.

When traveling on a trip, I found this was the most convenient as I could keep up with local happenings with my regular radio but when I wanted crystal clear tunes, I had my CD or Satellite radio to choose from.

One of the things that people mistakenly think about satellite radio is that all you have to buy is the monthly subscription to enjoy commercial free satellite radio. The fact is you do have to consider the cost of your subscription AND the cost of your satellite radio AND the cost of a professional installation. In most cases this amount can easily add up to a few hundred dollars.

By far the least expensive way to get started with satellite radio is to add one of those add on radios, like my husband bought. You can buy one for about $100 dollars and although the installation will take some time, it sis nothing that most people can't do themselves.

Some don't require installation at all, all you need is something called the FM modulator to be located near the FM radio in your car, IT will do the rest. This is a great solution if you just want to try satellite radio or if you change cars often.

So you can get started for as little as $100 dollars but for a mid to top of the line radio, expect to pay between $300 and $500 plus installation, and worth every penny! <bio>Holly Dodd writes for and publishes a number of consumer oriented websites like: http://www.My-Satellite-Radio-Review.info, she can also be found at http://www.blog.freeofferguide.com </bio>

Satellite Radio has become a very popular alternative to broadcast radio since its first release. It did take a while for the two competitors of satellite radio, Sirius and XM, to begin gaining customers. Equipment was expensive and bulky. There is also a monthly fee for the service, where broadcast radio is free. Satellite does have a few advantages against broadcast that helped it gain momentum more each year. There are very few channels on satellite radio that have commercials. This is very similar to premium cable television like HBO or Showtime...they cost extra but have no commercials. Another great feature Satellite Radio offers is quality that you cannot find in broadcast radio. Satellite radio is a digital signal that sounds cleaner and has virtually no static because with digital signals you either have close to full quality or nothing at all. Satellite also offers coast to coast coverage so you do not have to search for a local station when you travel.

Recent technology moves have helped the receiver end of satellite radio tremendously. Car manufacturers now offer satellite equipment built in to new cars so that there is nothing to buy, just the monthly service fee. Some car companies like GMC only offer XM capability, but many companies offer you to choose either but not both. Car manufacturers also offer much more high end stereos that can utilize the benefits of a digital signal. They use this as a sales pitch to show how good their stereos really are.

Satellite does have new competition that is broadcast for free like analog radio. HD Radio will be broadcast by many local stations in the near future offering better quality than satellite radio. This is much like television stations that broadcast HD TV locally. There are still commercials, but clear sound and music information about artists is available by any HD Radio equipped stereo. Only the future will tell if people are willing to shell out the dough to avoid commercials. <bio>Find the latest information and more at http://all-satellite-radio.info/ </bio>

For individuals who love to listen to music in their car and want a high-quality sound, they may want to consider looking into HD radio. HD radio is an easy way to upgrade both FM and AM channels. Instead of receiving analog signals, individuals with HD receive digital signals. What this means, is a clearer, crisper sound that is closer in quality to a CD then to traditional, FM radio.

If you are an individual that listens to AM radio stations but are disappointed and annoyed with the typical, lower quality sound, this will enable your AM radio listening experience to be very similar to your FM listening experience. This is a huge upgrade in itself. You also no longer have to worry about the signal fading or the static that often breaks up your favorite shows that are played on AM radio.

You also get more information, and then you would by simply listening to traditional radio. You'll be able to receive the name of the artist and the titles of every song that is played. This enables you to go out and purchase the CD or download MP3s anytime that you hear a song that you like.

You also will have more options, because HD radio does come with multi-casting. This allows you to listen to a lot more stations and DJ's. Another very neat feature of HD radio is that it allows users to tag songs so that they can go on and buy them from Itunes at a later time.

HD radio was created IBiquity digital and it allows radio stations to buy a license to this technology. Another advantage of HD radio is that if an individual is no longer pleased with it or no longer finds it necessary, they can go back to listening to the analog signal. This is a bit different from HDTV, because in a few years, individuals will not have a choice, because the analog signal will be turned off permanently. This is not the case with HD radio.

HD radio allows for a very advanced, clear and informative listening experience. Users can listen to their favorite shows and even additional channels. They are also able to get artists and song titles of all songs that are played. This gives them the opportunity to identify an artist and then go out and purchase the album, if they feel so inclined. HD radio is also an excellent choice for individuals that listen to a lot of AM radio. It allows them to finally be able to listen to it clearly. HD radio involves using a digital signal instead of the old traditional analog. This allows for a listening experience that is much closer to what would expect when listening to a CD. The music will have much more clarity and will have a much higher quality. If you are interesting in purchasing HD radio, don't worry, it's free. You will however, have to pay for the HD tuner which isn't too much of a hassle or expense though.<bio>Auto TransportVehicle Transport</bio>

What are your options in terms of radio stations? We all grew up on FM/AM radio in the car. This is called "terrestrial radio." In the 21st century, we now have options that span beyond the traditional FM radio stations.

Some of those options include: internet radio, satellite radio, and other forms of streaming audio online such as podcasts and live streaming. Even video sites and social networking sites have tons of music to listen to.

The beauty of this, our current time and culture, is that we get to choose what we consider to be our "radio." That is, we get to determine what we consider our source of music, entertainment and news from an audio standpoint.

Think about that: how blessed are we that we have those options now? In generations passed, the only choices were a few stations on the FM/AM dial, which hardly came in half the time, and records/tapes/CDs. Now there are mp3s and all of these other types of broadcasts that we can choose from.

So where does that leave terrestrial radio, and how do we move forward. Does terrestrial radio just evaporate ultimately in this time, this time that used to be known as "the future" which is now? Maybe it will.

Isn't that sad? Wouldn't it be a shame to see such a traditional format that has enriched the lives of so many just...disappear? Yes, that would be sad. I think we know that all to well. Consider this: perhaps the terrestrial radio that was truly so enriching as it was historically has already disappeared to a large degree. That IS sad.

Terrestrial AM/FM radio, for the most part, is owned and controlled by a very select group of very rich people. The stations you may call "local" are not, in fact, local at all in the traditional sense.

The decisions being made by radio stations on what to play changed since 1996, when the Telecommunications Act of 1996 was enacted into law. That new statute lifted the limit on the number of radio stations one corporate conglomerate could scoop up, as it were. Since that time, radio was never the same.

We lost something called, "localism." Sure, you still hear about traffic and weather locally, but what else? Is there a sense of community on that Top 40 radio station you love so much? Nope. Nowhere to be found!

It is sickening how we have become conditioned to stupid fart jokes and a few call-in contests, and call that localism. That is not localism. Localism was when what was happening locally really mattered. Localism, most importantly, was when the decisions about what a so-called local radio station played, in terms of songs, were done by... yeah, local people! Hello! Imagine that!

Nope, Corporate America is now in control of music decisions. So what you hear is based on clinical things like focus groups now. What you and your neighbors want to hear is only in the back of their minds, not in the front of their consciousness as it should be.
Americans are nothing if not selectively fickle. It took almost no persuasion for them to abandon their analog landline technology-based telephones, camera, and record players in favor of digitally based alternatives.

But when it comes to their listening pleasure, Americans have been fighting the digital revolution with as much gusto as they fought the American one. They are however, beginning to come around. Having spotty reception, or none, on long commutes or when in the back country on a recreational outing, or simply because they live in a particularly reception-unfriendly area has finally made many Americans start to take notice of their digital radio options.

The first digital radio alternative is satellite radio. Both Sirius and XM Satellite radio have eliminated the commercials from their digital radio transmissions and are beaming their broadcasts into the automobile receivers of millions of US drivers, no matter where they are located. The glitch is that the service is subscription only, and many older cars do not have the satellite digital radio receivers. And in some large urban areas, the reception is lacking, although Sirius and XM are working on fixes for their problems.

But between them Sirius and XM have still managed to collar only fifteen million of the estimated two hundred and thirty million AM/FM listeners in the US. The two companies have applied to the FCC for permission to discuss a merger, which will cut costs for both. But even a single entity may never move satellite digital radio beyond the niche stage.

The real up-and-comers in the US digital radio field appears to be local radio stations, both because they do not charge their listeners, and because the price of digital radio receivers is beginning to drop rapidly. At the beginning of 2006, a digital radio receiver cost a minimum of $500; now the most expensive are half that. With rebates it is frequently possible to find a digital radio receiver for under $100.

Hybrid digital radio is the result of combining digital power with the regular broadcasting of an AM or FM station. It costs a traditional broadcasting station upwards of $100,000 to make the transition to Hybrid Digital technology, and even then they have to pay royalties to iBiquity, which developed the process. But more than 1300 radio stations have either bought, or plan to buy, the necessary equipment. <bio>You can also find more info on http://www.digitalradio-review.com/Articles/DAB_Digital_Radio.php on DAB Digital Radio and http://www.digitalradio-review.com/Articles/Digital_Radio_Recorder.php on Digital Radio Recorder. </bio>

What will become of radio in the 21st century? Will it become obsolete eventually? This may not have occurred to you just yet. But if you are the innovator type, it may have been on your mind for more than a decade.

With the explosion of the internet and all of the other advanced technologies that have changed the way we communicate, this is the perfect time to be alive! Everything we want is practically at our fingertips, like never before.

Not only have the internet and modern technology of the new millennium impacted how we communicate, but they have also revolutionized entertainment.

Did you forget to record your favorite show on your DVR? That's ok; just watch it online or "on demand"--any time you like!

Hear your favorite song on the radio? Why go to the "brick and mortar" record store when you can just download it from an online retailer of mp3 music? Oh yeah--and who needs CDs? Just plug your mp3 player into your car stereo and you can listen to hundreds of CDs worth of music--all from an object the size of a box of mints!

Stuck on the side of the road due to car trouble? Use your cell phone. Did you leave your grocery list at home? Call home, again with your mobile telephone, and ask someone to read it to you!

Are you hungry, but out of cash and no time to stop at the ATM? That's ok! Even fast food restaurants and some vending machines take credit and debit cards now!

Need to write a letter or send out a work order? Forget stamps and envelopes: just email it!

We take all of these advancements for granted (as every generation has taken for granted each era's technological breakthroughs).

And now, the social networking revolution, online music sites, and online video sites are quickly changing the way we see celebrities. No longer is there an elite group of "special people" who are able to share their talents with others. Due to the proliferation of the internet all over the world, we can now connect to and enjoy the talents of people from across the globe!

Thus, the future of radio--terrestrial radio (meaning FM/AM radio)--is starting to look a little bleak. Standard radio and television (along with print) used to be our primary sources of entertainment. The internet is replacing everything!

There are now thousands upon thousands of internet radio stations broadcasting for free from around the world--most of them commercial free, too! Even terrestrial stations are simulcasting online!

Furthermore, internet radio is now available throughout your home on internet radios, and once Wi-Max or "internet everywhere" is available, you will be able to listen to internet radio in full quality on the go (you can already do so using a mobile device but at limited quality).

For now (and in the immediate future), we are stuck listening to the very displeasingly limited playlists of our local radio stations (which are corporate-owned and thus rife with corporate-formulated, payola-driven artists).

But that reality is not here to stay. The people have spoken! We want something more! And with the internet on our side, we can make our world anything we want. That is why this is the perfect time to be alive!<bio>To learn about the latest and greatest in radio technology, visit Your Two Way Radio and Radio Communications Experts - http://www.apexradio.co.uk</bio>

DAB, or digital audio broadcasting, brought to the radio industry what the digital technology of cellular phones brought to the telecommunications industry--an alternative to analog technology.

Using the Eureka 147 format, broadcast companies in Europe and the UK made the shift form analog broadcasting to DAB digital radio broadcasting; the Eureka format became globally standardized everywhere except in the United States.

The United States chose instead to have its DAB digital radio broadcasting formatted in hybrid-digital radio, which make it the only country to have done so, and more or less stopped the adoption of DAB digital radio technology altogether. In the United States, satellite radio has received all the broadcasters' and broadcasting equipment manufacturer's attention. Why?

Because satellite radio requires listeners to purchase expensive receivers, and in addition, to shell out the cost of subscribing each month. Radio listeners in other countries must simply raise their eyebrows at the prospect; they receive Eureka 147 and digital radio at no cost.

DAB Digital Radio Features

When the UK decided to make a massive commitment to DAB digital radio in 2001, all of the BBC's public radio stations, and more than fifty private ones switched their operating systems from analog to the analog and digital hybrid. The radio receivers used to pick up HD audio broadcasts have the capacity to display information relevant to the audio content of the broadcast.

DAB digital radio transmits radio text to the listener, providing tidbits lie the name of particular musical artist when his or her song is being aired, or the plot summary of a radio drama for which the listener may have tuned in a bit late. It will identify the participants in a talk program, or give up to the minute scores for sporting events. For more info see http://www.digitalradio-review.com/Articles/Digital_Radio_Recorder.php on Digital Radio Recorder.

A DAB digital radio receiver eliminates the need for fine tuning the reception on your favorite station as you move through its broadcast area. All you need to do is scroll through the list of stations available and then hit a button to select the one of your choice, for crystal clear reception.

iBiquity Digital

In the United States, iBiquity Digital has been approved by the FCC as the only supplier of hybrid digital analog technology, which it claims enormously increase the amount of broadcast channels, improve the sound quality so that AM sounds like the FM of the past, and FM achieves CD quality. <bio>You can also find more info on http://www.digitalradio-review.com/ on Digital Radion Online and http://www.digitalradio-review.com/Articles/DAB_Digital_Radio.php on DAB Digital Radio. http://Digitalradio-review.com is a comprehensive resource to know about Online Digital Radio. </bio>

If you are looking for ways to keep track of your culture and to know what is happening in the lives and minds of the youth of your culture, then there are many resources you need to consider. You can read magazines, watch television, watch the latest movies, or spend time on a university or college campus near you. Another great and inexpensive way to get a handle of this generation is to pay attention to the chart music that is on the radio every day of the week.

Basically, chart music is the top music of our culture. It is the most popular music that is being listened to by the most people. There is chart music in a variety of music genres, and each week the top music of many genres is put on the radio for the whole country to hear. So if you are looking for a way to get up to speed with the youth of our world or even of your own children's world, then tune in to chart music and pay attention to it.

Just how do you pay attention to chart music? Well, the first thing that you need to do is just listen to it. Instead of going for your favorite radio station when you jump in the car each day, find the radio stations that are playing the chart music and listen in to those. Your kids can tell you those popular radio stations if you don't already know. You do not necessarily have to set aside hours of valuable time each week to get to know chart music, instead you can just utilize your time in the car for a different purpose.

Another way to pay attention to chart music is to talk to your kids about the music they are listening. Let them put on music of their choice when they are in the car, and even ask to borrow some of the CD's. Be prepared that you may be offended with their music choices, but determine ahead of time that you are simply trying to use chart music to get a grasp of their lives, not to discipline them in any way. Start really listening to the words of chart music too.

The lyrics in chart music are a huge reflection of what the youth of our nation are thinking about and caring about. So listen up and you may find that you learn a great deal. You may be surprised by the depth of thought and emotion that our youth are experiencing each day. Chart music is a great way for parents to keep a handle on the interests of their kids, so tune your radio into their radio today. <bio>Triston Huntsmin is a family therapist that is always looking for creative ways to help parents engage their children's world. Paying attention to chart music is an effective way. See http://www.chartmusicgroup.info for more on current chart music. </bio>

You have probably been hearing about satellite radio for a while and of course, lately there has been plenty of news about Howard Stern, he is bringing in many listeners to Sirius and the fan base is growing quickly.

One of the big differences between regular radio and satellite radio is that with satellite you get hundreds of channels that are of digital quality, plus on the screen you know who is performing because it gives you that information. There are very few channels on satellite radio that have commercials. With over 100 channels to choose from there is always something good to listen to. No commercials just the music you want to listen to , you don't have to listen to salesmen, fuel companies, food advertisements, you will have no static, you will be able to listen to your music or talk show with no interruptions 24 hours a day. There are so many channels; a few of them are comedy, local weather and traffic, women's issues, sports, old time talk shows from the 20s to the 40s.

Through digital magic, you will not get static or any other types of disturbances you would normally get from an analog radio. The possibilities do not end there though, as it may even be possible for digital stations to broadcast pictures and videos directly to your car or home stereo through the magic of digital broadcasting. When receiving a signal from satellite the signal is completely digital and everyone knows a digital signal sounds cleaner and there is no static, you either get the signal or there is not signal. The signal is encoded and sent to the satellite and then it is sent back down to a receiver which it will be decoded and then the receiver plays the sound. If you find you loose the signal it is because when you travel you move along the earth and since the earth is round you will sometimes loose the signal because the satellites are traditional on the horizons.

Now, people you don't need to switch stations when driving because you cannot get a clear station in, you can listen to the same station or hundreds of other stations ranging from news, music and news in better quality than AM or FM bands. To receive the digital audio streams you will need a antenna to receive the signal.

Its small, portable and it fits in your purse or pocket, don't be fooled because they are small, they give the best sounding quality a radio can offer. The auto manufacturers are installing satellite radios to enhance the new automobiles, and many stores are now carrying the portable models to be used in the homes.

Satellite radio is subscription based, meaning that you pay a monthly fee for the service. The purchase of a satellite radio and a small monthly fee will open a whole world of ad-free radio listening to you. You will need to pay a monthly or yearly subscription fee to enjoy satellite radio. Many of the automobile dealerships and manufacturers offering many different types of incentives, so are giving 3 months free or even up to 6 months of free service to get you hooked, they are also throwing in no activation fee. <bio>David Marc Fishman is the owner of http://www.bornasuperstar.com.
Ham radio is often referred to as amateur radio and is a hobby that is enjoyed by millions of individuals across the globe. A ham radio operator uses a two-way radio to broadcast with other amateurs for the purpose of entertainment, public service or other venture.

The use of ham radio may actually help to save lives as operators often support the local community with emergency and disaster communications. On a recreational basis, ham radio can help to increase an individual's self awareness of electronics, the operations of radio and communication. In addition, ham radio is often used to showcase entertainment for listeners and may even help to launch a new career for an amateur.

Ham radio was once confined to an actual radio, but the progression of the world wide web has changed the way that people both listen and communicate via radio. In fact, there are a number of radio stations that actively communicate with listeners online. This activity paved the way for ham radio to reach a broad audience via the internet. While some simply use ham radio as a way to talk with friends, meet new people who share common interest and discuss topics that are relevant to a specific idea, others regularly use ham radio to send and receive emergency notifications relating to severe weather, emergency situations, disaster relief and other forms of scenarios that call for fast action that are of interest to the public.

Like traditional radios, ham radio equipment is often portable enough to accompany the operator while on vacation. In order to use ham radio, individuals must be licensed and cannot successfully travel with the equipment otherwise. The only way that an individual can become licensed to operate ham radio is to successfully pass an exam, which is created to confirm the individual's knowledge and understanding of key radio concepts. Unlike CB radio, individuals broadcasting on ham radio must possess a valid license to do so.

The best way to learn about ham radio operator licensing is to stop by a local club and speak with the owner. He/she will be able to direct most hopeful operators in the right direction. Once licensed, individuals will gain additional information on regulations and rules surrounding ham radio use and broadcasting. In addition, ham radio broadcasting equipment will be made available to licensed amateurs and can be found at a variety of internet specialty stores. <bio>To find out more about ham radio, please visit our website at http://www.hamradioguide.info .
You have probably heard of the two satellite radio companies, Sirius Radio and XM Satellite Radio, but you may not know a lot about them such as how much each costs or what radio talent is available on each. Many people are tired of listening to regular AM and FM radio stations for several reasons. It may be that they are tired of being bombarded with commercials. It may be that they do not like the programming available to them. On the other hand, it may simply be that they are in a rural area and tired of losing their radio signal all the time. Regardless of the reason, many consumers are turning to satellite radio as a viable alternative to regular radio stations.

Both companies are able to offer you static free radio due to satellites. XM (based in Washington D.C.) has two and Sirius (based in New York) has three satellites across the United States. Both companies offer users commercial free radio. Sirius offers over 125 channels and XM offers 160 different channels. There are dedicated channels for genres of music such as jazz, folk, country and pop for diehard fans. One cool feature of satellite radio is you can see the name of the artist playing as well as the song title. So never again do you have to spend time wondering just who sang that song you just heard! There are also channels for local weather and traffic, sports, comedy, women's issues, talk shows, even old time radio shows. Soon, you may be able to see video as well as hear audio on your satellite radios.

There are also celebrity shows for both satellite radio companies. Martha Stewart recently signed a deal to launch a 24-hour radio channel on Sirius Satellite Radio. And most everyone has heard that Howard Stern is on Sirius as well - uncensored. Having gotten in trouble with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for his radio talk show, he decided to jump to the uncensored airways of satellite radio. Since his show started, the Sirius subscriber base has increased by at least 2.7 million. If have satellite radio and want to hear National Public Radio (NPR), you will have to subscribe to Sirius as they are the only one offering NPR. But XM is not to be left behind by Sirius. XM signed Snoop Doggy Dog, but the big coop is Oprah. In September of 2006, XM users will be able to tune in to Oprah andamp; Friends. The new channel will offer broadcasts of The Oprah Winfrey Show, O, the Oprah Magazine and programming on fitness, health and self improvement.

All this sounds great, but what do you actually need to be able to receive satellite radio? You will need either a Sirius or an XM radio. This does not necessarily have to be a radio only for use in your car either. There are also home radios available today and there are even radios you can use both at home and in your car. The price for a basic radio offered by both Sirius and XM is as low as $49.99. You will also need to subscribe to a service. Both Sirius and XM charge $12.95 a month for you to receive satellite signals on your radio. However, if you have several cars with satellite radios, you can save by choosing the family plan available from both companies.

Just how popular is satellite radio becoming? In March of 2005, Hyundai announced that it would be the first automaker to put satellite radios in all of its models sold in the United States. Each Hyundai, including the popular Sonata, Santa Fe, and Elantra models, will come equipped with an XM satellite radio. When this was announced, shares in XM's parent company rose by more than 8 percent. Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz also announced in March 2005 that Sirius radios would be a dealer-installed option on some of their models.

So which satellite radio should you choose? That depends on you. You should check out the stations available by visiting each company on the web before making a decision. Both offer radios at comparable prices, so it really comes down to what you want to hear. Are you a Stern fan? Then you have to go with Sirius. But if you love Oprah, you can only hear her on XM. Regardless of which one you choose, you will no doubt be very pleased with the services and reception of satellite radio. <bio>Matt Barstow offers valuable tips and information about satellite radio, players, and services.
The best thing about the satellite radio is that you get about seventy channels of music, commercial free. The consumers keep the radio on air not commercials and the range of channels varies from opera to rap, from blues to dance music and much more.

Another great feature of this radio is the absence of static. >From East coast to West Coast and all over the US, you will get a clear signal where ever you are.

In addition, if you have just heard a song and you want to know the name of it, simply look at the receiver display. It will tell you the name, the artist, what channel you are listening to, and what program it is.

Satellite radio is completely free from censors. Howard Stern can put a program on air as is, without interference. You can hear music like hip hop without any interruptions.

The radio service provides local weather and traffic conditions. In big cities, there are more detailed forecasts. In addition, if there is a national crisis, unlike regular radio stations that go blank, satellite radio will be able to provide information. You may listen to the radio on your computer.

Most people mistakenly think regular radio is free, but it isn't. You are forced to listen to sections of annoying commercials in exchange for music. With a satellite radio subscription, of about thirteen dollars, you get a clear reception, you get channels of music you can listen to no matter where you are and you can listen to exactly what you want.

This is perfect for a person who travels throughout the US. You don't have to worry about static and you don't have to fiddle around with the radio every time you leave a specific area. Soon XM and Sirrus will provide the same service for Video Channels. Their subscribers would be able to enjoy great quality, a clear reception and commercial and censor free viewing. <bio>Jason Allen is a staff writer at http://www.wireless-times.com and is an occasional contributor to several other websites, including http://www.entertainment-digest.com. </bio>

As time goes by and technology grows and changes to suit the needs of people we have seen an increase in the need for portability in media. People are on the go and require more portability in their Radios. Science and Technology has grown with the demand of the people. This demand has bred Portable Satellite Radios.

Portable Satellite Radio allows a person to listen to various genres of music at any given time, on demand, via Satellite technology. Where once we had Cassette tape walkman devices, then Compact Disc walkman devices we now have the capability to take our music with us wherever we go without being limited to the radio stations in our local vicinity. This means there is no longer a boundary of radio signal that is limited to your town or city. Now you can hear feeds that take place all over the nation, without having to wait for it to be syndicated and picked up by your local radio station.

There are many different Portable Satellite Radio providers such as XM, Sirius Radio and many others. These services are fee based and provide users with a variety of different genres of music for a monthly service charge. This allows the Portable Satellite Radio user to be able to travel with his or her musical selections but not limit them to a play list of music that is made up of only a few songs.

Not only is there a wide variety of music on Portable Satellite Radio. There are also many other types of media such as the national news and Talk Radio. As the Portable Satellite Radio technologies took off shock jock Howard Stern made the switch from normal syndicate radio to Portable Satellite Radio. Many other radio personalities quickly followed suit.

The reason behind the boom of radio personalities making the switch from normal analog radio to Portable Satellite Radio is that it gave them the freedom from some of the FCC restrictions about freedom of speech. Unlike analog radio the FCC doesn't control as strictly Portable Satellite Radio feeds. Portable Satellite Radio and the boom in the industry also gave radio personalities a broader fan-base. Exposing them to more people who typically may have not heard of them or had the opportunity to enjoy what they bring to the radio.

When looking for a Portable Satellite Radio service you must take into consideration coverage area as well as pricing. What kind of cost will you pay for the convenience of not being bound to limited music and services? Portable Satellite Radio gives you the convenience that is almost necessary in today's fast paced world of technology and media.

Most audio equipment retailers now provide Portable Satellite Radio devices and services. For the most part these devices can be budget-friendly and the monthly service fees reasonable. If you are interested in expanding your musical tastes and are an on-the-go type of person, Portable Satellite Radio may be something you would be interested in. <bio>Satellite Radio HQ http://satellite-radio-hq.com/ talks about the history of satellite radio, the equipment you'll need, the satellite radio channels you can receive and much more. </bio>

The Internet has evolved and made many changes in our culture including personal MySpace pages, individual blogs, the way we trade information as well as the way the public finds and listens to music.

One of the upcoming and most popular formats is Internet Radio.

Let's discuss an Internet station, www.ilike2rock.net, who promotes, plays and exclusively features independent artists and their music.

Internet radio stations have been online for more than three years and offer listeners an alternative to "subscription radio" and commercial radio because of the eclectic music formats and unique opportunities for independent bands. The music is being brought to the forefront with stations like www.ilike2rock.net.

I spoke with DJ Tom of ilike2rock.net about the radio station and why it is important, not only the bands and individual artists they promote, but to the public as well.

"First and foremost, it is all about the music," explained DJ Tom. "We offer a chance for the independent artists to submit their music free to us and to do that, they just go to our site and submit the music through a resource called "Music Submit" (we have an exclusive agreement with them). "Music Submit" allows bands and artists to submit band bios', media kits and of course, the music, and this service in turn helps the bands by promoting them on ezines, other Internet radio stations, blogs and music related web sites."

And www.ilike2rock.com adds even more to the table. I asked DJ Tom to elaborate.

"This gives the independent band or artist a unique opportunity to be heard with free exposure on our home page to reach their target audience and a chance for the band to attain new fans. We will also showcase bands in our "Talent Showcase," keeping the band active on our play list. We also use the artists own promotional material (blogs, YouTube, My Space) and link up with them within our web site structure and we even create ring tones for them."

There is a free program on the site to download called "Destiny Music Player" so you can tune in to the station and other Internet radio stations. It is similar to many of the music players for computers and is very easy to use and navigate.

Tired of the same format from your local radio station? Tune in ilike2rock and you can add more than 150 (and counting) independent bands and artists to your music play list. I spoke to DJ Tom about some of the bands they play and promote.

"This is what is the most exciting to me, we play the independent bands that submit to us (and Music Submit), from all kinds of musical genres and it is a free format, for both the listener and the bands. I am very excited for all our bands and artists. Some of the bands we promote are Hypnogaja, which supplied background music for the hit television on FX called "Dirt," Black Frog, who have played at the Sturgis Bike Rally and Hide From Cleo, one of Michigan's hottest bands and we promote all the bands equally."

I was very impressed with DJ Tom and I too am excited to find new bands to listen to on the Internet. After all, it is always about the music. <bio>Author Robert Benson writes about rock/pop music, vinyl record collecting and operates http://www.collectingvinylrecords.com, where you can secure your copy of his ebook called "The Fascinating Hobby Of Vinyl Record Collecting."
Has someone told you that you have a voice for radio? Do you like to meet people? Are you willing to learn and put your ego aside? Then you might have what it takes to break into the radio business.

I feel like it's important that you know who's writing this article, because there are many people who claim they know how to get into the radio business, but have never worked in the industry. I started off at a small AM/FM combo radio station in Ithaca, NY in 2003. I was going to Ithaca College at the time and wanted to do anything I could to get my start in my dream of being on the radio. I literally fetched people coffee, but I also got to announce the weather on the AM station, and that was the beginning to a great career! Since then, I've worked in 9 states as a Morning Radio Host for stations from Memphis to Hartford, CT.

If you have a passion for radio and you've got the heart and determination to be an on-air announcer, that's a good start. Most radio program directors (those that hire announcers) like people who are willing and eager and display a true love for the art of radio.

Are you still here? Do you want to take the next step? Here are some suggestions on what you can do now (I'll describe them more fully after this list).

1.) Make a Demo Tape. 2.) Set up an interview with a program director. 3.) Be persistant, but not annoying. 4.) Take any job at a radio station you can get. 5.) Don't take andquot;noandquot; for an answer.

Making a Demo tape is an important step. When you contact a program director, the first question they'll ask is, andquot;Do you have am MP3, a tape or CD Sample.andquot; To make your sample, I suggest getting in touch with a radio station in your area and asking them if you can get a tour of the radio station. Then once you're at the station, ask if you would be able to make a demo tape. You'd be surprised to find how many radio people are willing to help you out. If you can't get into a professional studio, then record yourself on an MP3 player and submit it to a Program Director. As far as what you say on your demo. You might want to transcribe your favorite radio personality as a guide.

The next thing you'll want to accomplish is to talk with a program director. Be persistant, but not overly persistant. I suggest sending an email, since they can respond to you on their time. Talk about your love for radio and that you'd like to help out the radio station in anyway you can.

Once you have your demo tape, it's time to send it to area program directors for your first chance to be on-air. Remember that each Radio Programmer is looking for specific types of voices for their radio station. Don't be upset if you don't get a callback right away or if they don't think you'll fit the station. If you send out 100 CDs or MP3 samples, your chances are good that someone will think you have what it takes. So don't give up.

There are many people who say they'd like to become a radio announcer, but never pursue their dream. If you love radio enough and want it bad enough, I know that you'll be a great success, and I look forward to hearing you on my radio soon. <bio>Chris Kellogg has been a Morning Radio Show Host for over 13 years.
The introduction of satellite radio has been one of the biggest innovations in recent FM broadcasting history. This radio signal can be heard at a distances of thirty five thousand kilometers and beyond. That is more that twenty two miles with a clear reception, no static and more than one hundred stations to listen to. The inception of this concept was 1992 when the Federal Communications Commissions gave up the S band on the radio wave spectrum (2.3 GHz) to Digital Audio Radio Service. The companies that were initially given a license to broadcast on this spectrum were XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio. Currently, there are three satellite radio services broadcasting around the world: XM and Sirius in North America and WorldSpace in Europe, Asia and Africa.

The three satellite radio companies each have a different system for broadcasting their signals. This means that a customer would end up buying specific equipment depending on what company they subscribe to. There are three parts to a satellite radio system: the ground repeaters, the satellites and the radio receivers. The XM satellite radio has satellites that are geographically located above the equator at all times. To combat the issue of obstacles such as hills, bridges and buildings, the XM radio service has a network of repeaters. These are antennas that get the signal from the satellites and transmit it to the subscriber's radio. The Sirrus radio service is set up a little differently. The satellites are elliptical in structure and they orbit the Earth. Because these satellites are on a higher level, the signal is usually clear and there is no need to have quite as many repeaters.

The satellite radio programmers are able to choose what music or program to fill air time. Many use CD's or have musicians come in to perform live. This sound is transmitted via a digital format. The signal is encoded by the satellite and then sent to the repeater antennae. The repeater moves it along to the subscriber's radio which decodes the signal and plays the sound. Satellite radio also utilizes digital compression which is a method of reducing a set amount of information into a bandwidth using complex algorithms. If you are a subscriber, you will have to purchase the correct equipment to get the signal.

The amount of people who subscribe to satellite radio has grown due to the improvements made to the technology. The appeal of the radio station has always been the fact that the radio doesn't depend on advertising to pay the bills, therefore the programs available are commercial free. <bio>Jason Allen is a staff writer at http://www.wireless-times.com and is an occasional contributor to several other websites, including http://www.entertainment-digest.com. </bio>
