Have you ever had a bad episode of digestive gas buildup? It can be very embarassing. However what most of us never consider is that fact that flatulence is a primary sign of poor digestion. Poor digestion is problematic for your long term health.

If you do a little comparative test, you will note that you feel better and your digestion is smoother when you eat in a quiet and peaceful environment. Digestion is the process of converting food into an absorbable form that the body can use to produce energy. If this does not happen, protein digestion is incomplete. If protein digestion is not taking place, then the proper number and amounts of amino acids will not be present to make other proteins which are necessary for other important bodily functions.

It is a good idea to support digestion with enzymes responsible for the healthy breakdown of nutrients.

Enzymes are catalysts which help break down nutrients into a form that the body can absorb them.

The health risks behind excessive flatulence are worthy of your immediate attention. Flatulence is caused by undigested foods that are fermenting in your digestive tract. If these foods are not eliminated quickly from your body they turn into fermenting toxins which can actually poison the body and prevent natural healing from ocurring. This is referred to as poisoning from within or endotoxemia.

Naturopathic Doctors strongly suggest that we increase roughage (fiber) in our diets.

The latest holistic medical research suggests the high incidence of heart disease, diabetes, bowel disease, hernia and diverticulitis in western countries on a lack of dietary fiber in the diet.

How much dietary fiber are you consuming on a daily basis?

Americans usually avoid high fiber diets because of a concern that it will increase gas levels and bloating. As a matter of fact eating fiber will help the normal detoxification processes, normalize your bowel and support maintenance of a healthy weight and prevent bowel diseases.

Dietary fiber amounts are now listed on most product labels in supermarkets.

It is suggested that we consume at least 35 grams of dietary fiber daily. This amount can assist in re-establishing proper digestion in your body by toning and strengthening your bowel, eliminating harmful toxins. High Fiber Foods in Your Diet represent the revolutionary way for you to lose weight, prevent disease, stay slim and have more energy. Dietary fiber and digestive enzymes are a great way to improve poor digestion. <bio>Brandon H. Masters is a Health Enthusiast, Researcher and Brandon H.
Seems like the public has been brainwashed in the last several decades to think that digestive acids produced by the stomach are the root of digestive problems. Antacid tablets and liquids have been around for years. Now the latest supposed remedy for stomach problems is the "acid blockers" that have been advertised so heavily on television and in magazines. They have become one of the best-selling over-the-counter drug categories in history. Some of the advertisements even claim they can stop the production of stomach acid for up to 12 hours.

The question is, how will food get digested without stomach acid. The answer is, it won't, which leads to three problems for people who use acid blockers. The problems get worse the longer ou use one of these drugs.

Firstly, proteins won't be broken down properly and certain minerals won't be absorbed, because they require stomach acid for this process. When these improperly digested substances reach the intestines, gas-forming bacteria multiply quicker than election-year promises, leading to a serious gas problem.

Secondly, low stomach acid eventually causes a protein deficiency. Your body then robs protein from joint surfaces and transports it to areas where it's needed, leading to possible arthritis.

Thirdly, a lack of stomach acid also impairs the digestion and assimilation of calcium, which can result in many problems, including muscle cramps and osteoporosis.

There is a simple way to stop this problem and that is to eat the protein foods at the beginning of the meal. Most of us in this U.S. eat a salad as the first part of a meal. The carbohydrates that make up the salad require no hydrochloric acid for digestion. Nevertheless, the stomach dumps all the hydrochloric acid in to begin with. Then when the protein food (meat, fish, beans, cheese, etc.) needs the acid, there's none left. So always eat the vegetable salad either with the protein food (with meal) or after, but not before.

If this is still not enough to stop the problem, you may need to help your stomach out by taking some hydrochloric acid in the form of betaine hydrochloride tablets. One really important point to remember here is to take one or two tablets after you eat. Whatever you do, don't take them before or during the meal, which will shut off your natural acid production. Instead, you want your stomach to produce and secrete as much acid as it can first, then you can add the additional acid needed.

Once your digestive tract is re-acidified, the next step in improving your digestion is to provide a proper digestive enzyme. Many supplements are available so you should not have any trouble finding one but remember a good product will include acids and enzymes very similar to the ones produced by the stomach. You want to look for pepsin and betaine hydrochloride on the label. It should also include enzymes commonly produced by the pancreas, as well as the enzymes present in bile from the gallbladder.

An all-purpose digestive enzyme is bromelain. It's a combination of protein-digesting enzymes that come from the and stems of the pineapple. When taken shortly after a meal, bromelain can relieve an upset stomach or heartburn. In addition, brmelain is an effective anti-inflammatory.The German Commission E (Germany's equivalent to the U.S. FDA) has approved it for healing after surgery or injury. It can reduce swelling, bruising, pain and improve healing time.<bio>Jonathan Bell wants you to be healthy and is a proponent of natural supplements and good nutrition is what our bodies need today more than ever. Health is Wealth</bio>

So you are wondering if the dog food you are feeding is really good for your canine.

Maybe you heard that your particular brand of dog food is bad for your dog.

Here I will try to explain what to look for as well as the ingredients and how they measure up to what you are currently feeding. Please keep in mind dog food is essential to their health as for most it is their main source of nutrition.

Some easy tips are:

Do not buy dog food that contains BHT or BHA, they are chemical preservatives and could be harmful. Do not buy food that has by-products in it; these are often left over from is given to the human market. That means by-products could be feet, intestines, necks etc.

Grains that are often difficult to digest like corn, wheat, gluten and soy, are often used as a protein source instead of meat. -- This is not healthy and in addition can cause allergies.

Now we get into the fun part!

The first 5 ingredients play a significant role in the overall nutritional make up of a dog food

What are the protein sources? I believe the primary source should come from quality animal protein, not vegetable protein or grain. Foods that list 2 or more grains in the first 5 ingredients may have more vegetable protein than animal protein.

What about grains? Two or more grains listed in the first 5 ingredients means your food may have more vegetable protein than animal protein. Grains such as soy, corn, corn gluten and wheat gluten can be difficult to digest, which means less nutrition and more clean up.

Are there by-products? Some manufacturers consider by-products inferior sources of protein and, depending on the source, they can be difficult to digest.

What are the fat sources? Some fats are better than others. We believe the primary fat source in dog food should be animal based because animal fats contain a profile of fatty acids that are easily metabolized and thus are generally more available to the body.

Look for an identifiable animal protein such as "chicken meal" rather a generic term; such as, "poultry meal," which can contain any fowl (turkey, chicken, geese, etc.).

Some manufacturers use chicken in their pet foods; however, look for Chicken "Meal" Why? Because chicken meat contains a certain amount of moisture in the flesh; however, chicken "meal" is a concentrated source of chicken protein because most of the water has been removed. Therefore, it only stands to reason that you get a greater "protein content" in 1 pound of chicken meal versus 1 pound of chicken.

Make sure your dog food has bacteria cultures (acidophilus) for easy digestion. Look for vegetables and fiber for anti-oxidants protection, vitamins and minerals. <bio>Lori Matthews studies health, nutrition and wellness.
High protein foods are great for packing on extra muscle. To make sure that your diet is filled with muscle-building proteins, it is extremely important to consider which high protein foods you should consume during your daily eating routine. To help you select the best high protein foods for your diet, we've compiled a list of some of the most protein-packed foods that you can find in your average grocery store.

You will notice that the list covers a broad variety of high protein foods. This was done intentionally so that you can compare food types and have more options to add to your daily meals.

The list:

(all nutrition estimates are based on standard single servings)

Peanut butter (2 tbsp)

Protein- 8 g

Calories- 188

Fat- 16 g

Raw almonds (19 pieces)

Protein- 7 g

Calories- 180

Fat- 14 g

Almond butter (1 tbsp)

Protein- 2 g

Calories- 101

Fat- 9 g

Skinless chicken breast (1 cup)

Protein- 38 g

Calories- 258

Fat- 10.4

Ground beef (90% lean, 3 oz)

Protein- 23 g

Calories- 182

Fat- 9 g

Ground turkey (3 oz)

Protein- 22 g

Calories- 193

Fat- 11 g

Salmon (half fillet)

Protein- 39 g

Calories- 367

Fat- 22 g

Tuna (canned, 1 cup)

Protein- 39 g

Calories- 179

Fat- 1 g

Deli turkey (1 oz)

Protein- 4 g

Calories- 31

Fat- 1 g

Findings:

High protein foods vary substantially in protein, fat, and calorie content per serving. Some of the best high protein foods have high fat counts; however, it is important to consider that not all fats are bad for you, and some can be very beneficial to your diet- even if weight loss is your top priority. Almonds, for example, are rich in omega three fatty acids but low in saturated fats.

In general, if you are looking for an efficient way to increase your protein count but keep your calorie and fat intakes minimal, than fish and lean meats are an effective option. Canned tuna (hold the mayo) tops the list as the most efficient protein source. Skinless chicken breasts, deli turkey, ground turkey, and lean ground beef are also highly efficient high protein foods. <bio>A.J.
Are you interested in looking after your body before and after strenuous activities or exercise? Do you avoid supplements that contain additives and possible side effects?

If you are interested in better health and improved physical fitness, you may have heard that bodybuilders and other athletes are turning to a simple, natural supplement called whey protein.

What is whey protein?

Whey protein is a pure, natural, high quality protein from cow's milk. It is a rich source of the essential amino acids that are needed by our bodies daily and are the building blocks for healthy muscles, nails, skin, and other body tissue. Whey is the by-product of making cheese and was usually thrown away as a waste product. Whey protein is an excellent choice of protein for people of all ages. Researchers now know that whey protein provides numerous benefits in areas that include sports, weight control, immune support, bone health, and general well-being. It is naturally found in mother's milk and also used in baby formula. Whey protein isolate is the purest form available. Whey protein is being considered for use as a fortifier of grain products because of its considerable health benefits and bland flavor. In addition, whey protein is easily digestible, lactose-free and is a rich source of branched chain amino acids or BCAAs. It also contains the highest known levels of BCAAs in any natural food source and these are of particular benefit to athletes and anyone who exercises hard. Although protein is also found in other foods such as meat, soy and vegetables, whey protein is proven to have the highest absorption rate (digestion) in comparison to all other foods.

Why do athletes use whey protein?

Protein levels are depleted through exercise. Muscles require the amino acid leucine. Leucine is important as it plays a key role in promoting muscle protein synthesis and muscle growth to prevent deterioration, give endurance and build mass. Proteins supply these amino acids to the muscles, which is why athletes use whey protein.

Who should consider using whey protein?

Because amino acids are 'building blocks' for the human body, it is sometimes used by patients to speed up the healing of wounds or burns.

The high quality protein that comes from whey makes it a recommended choice for those who need optimal benefits from restricted diets including diabetics, those on weight management diets and even ill patients not able to consume enough protein in their diet to assist with healing.

Can whey protein be dangerous?

Whey protein is a food and therefore does not have the risks associated with other supplements. Nevertheless, too much of anything carries risks. Extremely high use of whey protein can overload the liver, which can cause serious problems. Moderation is always recommended.

Should you be lactose intolerant you might want to try whey protein isolate, which has less than 1% lactose and is generally tolerable for most users.

Whey protein is a great natural and healthy way to bring protein into your diet and increase your general well-being. <bio>For more articles and information on weight loss the healthy way visit the authors site at http://www.TheFatBurner.net NOTE:You have full permission to reprint this article within your website or newsletter as long as you leave the article fully intact and include the "About The Author" resource box </bio>

Protein shakes are extremely popular energy supplements that are heavily used by both dieters and bodybuilders. Protein shakes provide a large dosage of protein, which is necessary for bodybuilders to build the muscle bulk that they are looking for, not to mention that protein shakes are filling and work great for weight loss dieters as a meal supplement. Instead of having a full sized meal around 500 calories, a protein shake of 1-200 calories can satisfy a person's appetite while helping them to shave off the calories.

Protein from protein shakes can improve the muscles, skin, and bones, and protein is harder for the body to break down than carbs, meaning the body will burn off a larger percentage of the calories from protein high foods than foods high in carbs. Protein is a necessary part of bodybuilding diets and weight loss diets, which shows just how effective protein shakes can be regardless of what your specific dieting goals are.

There is a huge variety of protein shakes available, not only by company, but also by flavors, textures, and protein sources. For example, with whey protein shakes alone it is easy to find vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream, or even strawberry flavored shakes. All of these provide the massive amount of protein that your body needs to function on a high level.

You should check out specifics of every protein shake before you buy, since one protein shake is not always made equal to the others, and you want a protein shake that matches your needs. One protein shake might also be loaded with carbs and caffeine in order to help serious bodybuilders really bulk up heavily. Meanwhile another shake might have no carbs or caffeine, but only pure protein and calories from the protein. This might work better for someone who wants protein, and also wants a protein shake that takes the place of a meal.

Some protein shakes are also designed towards one group or another. This means that there are protein shakes that were made with the weight loss dieter in mind and are designed to work well accordingly, and there are protein shakes that are designed to do the complete opposite and help major bodybuilders actually bulk up. Depending on what your goals are, you obviously want one over the other and you don't want to mix the two up.

If you're looking for a great addition to any diet, whether your goals are weight loss or actual muscle gain for bodybuilding, then there's a protein shake out there that can help you to more quickly and efficiently achieve your goals. So be willing to find a good protein shake and as you race towards making all your goals you'll be smiling that you did.

Whey protein, and other protein shakes, are becoming enormously popular among dieters and bodybuilders alike. Whey protein is added to water or milk, and is the best protein source of all. The human body can process nearly all 100% of whey protein, a far higher rate than almost any other kind that appears in nature. Whey protein is the absolute best source of protein available, and it comes from a natural source which makes it even better.<bio>Find out more about Protein Shakes and Weight Gainer at 2Fit4You.com</bio>

I'm sure that most of you would agree that in today's world, where we have to rush from one situation to the other, getting a properly balanced diet is somewhat impossible, and often beyond the scope of our capabilities. This can be due to many things, like insufficient time to cook a meal, insufficient restaurants around to even pop out and eat a good meal, or you're tied down to your desk, or a multitude of other equally good reasons. If you think about it however, I'm also sure that you would agree that this is probably the leading cause for the poor digestion suffered by many people around the world today.

Bloating, constipation, and gas are a few of the more common symptoms of poor digestion. Abdominal cramping, chronic fatigue, premature aging, joint and muscle pain, arthritis, and nausea are a few more symptoms induced by poor digestion, from a list that can go on and on, and on.

If you suffer from poor digestion, you could be having one or all of these conditions and not even realize it. And from there it will just start to snowball, as you experience more discomfort, more pain, and finally succumb to a much worse condition than poor digestion.

It has been said, that poor digestion is akin to poor nutrition, where with poor digestion you might be getting the proper nutrients into your body, but your system isn't able to absorb it. There are many contributing factors to a poor digestive system, but it has been found that processed foods can be one of the biggest factors.

And no wonder, really with the amount of ready to eat meals, and fast foods that are out there on the market, beckoning to us eagerly when we're at most vulnerable, (read `irritable, tired, and hungry' into that last sentence.)

So how do we stop poor digestion? Ideally it should be easy to stop poor digestion, and correct it so your digestive system is working again properly right? Unfortunately, this is not always true, and for some people an extensive course of medication may be required before they can fully cure their poor digestion problems.

The best course that you can take would be to consult your doctor on how to remedy your condition. Just remember that you will need to remedy it. Poor digestion takes a lot out of your body, and makes it weak, leaving it more prone to attacks from other sources.

Missing vital nutrients due to lack of proper digestion can harm your body more than you realize. So just pick up that phone, and talk to your doctor straight away. Self-diagnosis isn't always right, and it's always better to have a professional opinion to back you up. Listen to your body, it's the greatest gift you could ever have, and it might just be trying to talk to you, don't ignore it. <bio>Author's sites: http://www.easyhomeremedy.com , http://www.myanxietyguide.com , http://www.home-remedies-for-heartburn.com </bio>

How many times have you tried to gain weight and increase the size of your muscles but achieved less than optimal results? For several years I had the exact same problem. Fortunately, I found a great solution that I am happy to share with you: weight gainer protein shakes.

The philosophy behind gaining weight and building muscle is simple, and it involves three key points

Point 1: consume more calories than you burn

Point 2: make sure that as many of these calories as possible come from protein rich foods

Point 3: hit the gym and lift heavy

Now, how do you make sure that you consume more calories than you burn at the gym? This is where weight gainer protein shakes come into play. Weight gainer protein shakes can pack so many calories that it would be nearly impossible for you to burn this many calories in a normal workout. Protein shakes are a great supplement to your diet for many nutritional reasons, but most importantly, because they are not as filling as a meal of solid food with the same number of calories.

So, what should I put in my weight gainer protein shakes you might be asking yourself. Because I'm a nice guy, I've decided to share the weight gainer protein shake recipes that I use when I am trying to bulk up fast. These protein recipes were developed with a great deal of trial and error, and they really do work and taste great as well.

Recipe 1

Delicious Peanut Butter and Chocolate Weight Gainer Protein Shake

1 =BD cups whole milk

2 table spoons peanut butter

1 scoop chocolate ice cream

2 scoops chocolate protein powder

Calories: 645

Protein: 47 g Fat:

37 g

To decrease the fat per serving, switch out the ice cream for frozen or regular yogurt. You can further reduce the fat calories by substituting more protein powder instead of the peanut butter.

All nutrition facts in this recipe are approximations and are based on a single serving of whey protein. <bio>A.J.
You've designed what you hope will be the perfect match of a workout program for your needs. You know what type of muscle mass gain you want and you have written out a training guide to get there. You know you will need to ingest the "big" three to avail yourself to proper nutrition. Carbohydrates, fats and PROTEIN. Back to the basics you know that you need to feed a two hundred (200) pound body with about one and one-half (1 1/2) daily grams of protein per body pound. If you are going to ingest up to three hundred or more grams of protein per day you better get to cooking and chewing!

You are set up for a number of small meals throughout the day scheduled to complement your workout and rest periods. Well, get a hold of yourself. Three hundred grams of quality protein equates to about fifty (Yes 50!) medium size eggs. No way? Then grab yourself about three and a half (3 1/2) pounds of cod fillets! One more try? Three hundred grams of roast beef would be about two and one-half (2 1/2) pounds! Might as well throw in the caloric content of the above. Fifty eggs is four thousand five hundred calories! The roast beef? That much cooked cow will give you about seventy five hundred (7500) or great tasting calories.

Think you are set up to eat and work off that much caloric content without turning to a tubby? Ok, where are you going to find the time. Unless you have a cook on call for your six meals then no way you can develop the time to cook that stuff.

Now we are to the supplements. Read labels and you will find that pound for pound and dollar for dollar the powders or drinks will be more cost effective than "food". If you could ingest solely powders you could get your three hundred (300) grams of protein out of about ONE pound of the product which would yield somewhere in the neighborhood of eighteen-hundred (1800) calories. DON'T DO THAT. While cost effective and easy these supplements still are not food and to derive the same nutrients you will be balancing the diet daily. The majority of your dietary protein still should be from chicken, tuna, etc, etc, etc, etc. So if you are on a six meal day then you would probably be OK with about three shakes maximum per day.

So now we know supplements are easily effective for just under half of your meals. There are hundreds if not thousands brands, type and concoctions of protein supplements on the market. We need quality, so it is necessary to READ LABELS! You can easily omit the ones containing fructose, sucrose, rice syrup and other unwanted sweeteners. Now you need to weed out the questionable ingredients such as aspartame and artifical flavors or colors.

Do your homework. Research the company for reliability and reputation. Products filled with crappy ingredients are and will continue to be on the market because we will buy them. Don' simply check out the protein gram marker on the label and grab it up. Safe and nutritious can be found from quality manufactures which have a valid and enduring interest in healthy and functional body building.

Flavor? Just like the protein grams listed on the label you might want to ignore the taste until you investigate what the darn stuff if made of. It might prove necessary to sacrifice flavor for quality. Add a banana. Add another properly nutritious flavor in the form of a favorite fruit. If you have a great product that is easy to mix and deliver to your gut then flavor should be way down on your list of wants.

Your choice of protein type might send you into a research fit. Three types of protein are the usual ones on the shelf. Gee whiz---you are back to realizing your goals and pick the type of protein powder best suited for you.

Whey. This protein makes up about twenty (20%) percent of milk. With am excellent amino acid profile along with a rapid digestion this is a good one. Use it before, during and just after your workout. These are the times of the day your body needs energy the most and rapid digestion just might help out!

Casein is another derivative of milk. Making up about eighty (80%) of milk protein. Having a slow digestion rate along with excellent amino acids and peptides use Casein for the times outside of the pre and post workout windows. MAXIMUM benefit realized then.

And good old Soy protein. Arguments are constantly raging on both sides of this protein battle. Advocates claim a super food with "great magical" powers. The other side cites many many detriments of the soy product. So unless you appreciate the taste of have another good reason for use you might just as well leave this bucket of calories sitting on the store shelf.

And of course, if we have different types of protein you can just imagine the number of blends manufactures put on the market. Well, with a blend you can alter digestion time, alter percent of amino acids and peptides. While you could seek a blend out with great benefits you may have to watch what you ingest just prior and just after workout.

So we actually know supplements are great time and calorie savers as we seek hight volumes of protein. Well, back to limiting yourself to thirty (30% or forty (40%) of your daily intake and you can greatly benefit. Just do not forget the nutrients available in the chicken and tunas that are not in the powder. As long as you do not make the mistake that protein powders are a magical elixir then can become a valuable asset to a muscle mass gaining program.<bio>Gordon Chandler is just starting his sixth decade on this upholstered planet we call earth. While currently limited by a heart disorder from lifting he still maintains an interest in what can be accomplished by proper nutrition and weight training. http://www.escapeyourshape.info</bio>

As every bodybuilder knows, have the battle is having the proper diet for your goals, and there isn't a successful workout regiment around that doesn't include a diet loaded with high protein food. High protein food comes in many forms, and while most people automatically assume meat, that isn't always the best source (although meat does consistently provide a high level of protein). Beans, shakes, and whey protein are just a few of the other options available, and all of them provide the protein building blocks needed to be part of a great bodybuilder's diet.

High protein foods should definitely be at the top of your diet list whether the goal is to become a high level bodybuilder, lose weight on a diet, or some middle of the road combination of both. Protein is definitely your friend.

There are many high protein food that you should consider as part of your diet. Some of these foods include:

• Buffalo
• Turkey
• Lean Beef
• Chicken
• Fish
• Organic Beans
• Whey Protein (supplement added to shake)
• Eggs
• Nuts (go for unsalted and unsweetened)
• Skim Milk
• Cheese

These are just some of the great foods groups that provide high protein food. There are many other choices, but that list includes some of the best, and a good mix of these foods will help you build muscles, maintain your current muscle mass, and eat foods that will heal your muscles after workouts. High protein food is an absolute necessity to get into, and stay in, good healthy shape.

If there is a downside to high protein food, it's that the majority of them are high in fat, and some are very high in cholesterol. Some fats are good, but even if you have "good fat" like from fish, nuts, or olive oil, you don't want too much. Then there are the terrible saturated fats and cholesterol that can harm you, threatening with heart disease and clogged arteries. This is where finding the good high protein food comes in. Fish, chicken, turkey, and beans are all considered some of the absolute best high protein foods because they are high in protein, tend to have more good fat than bad, and less of it (although some nuts are certainly high in the fat category).

That being said, you need to have a protein heavy diet, and there are plenty of great high protein foods that have reasonable amounts of fat. One of the major reasons pork was left off the list in this article isn't because that's a low protein meat (in fact it's one of the best), but pork is one of the most unhealthy meats due to the bad fats and cholesterol and isn't a good add. Meanwhile, grilled fish and chicken almost always make the list of top notch high protein foods that can be added to any diet without worry.

So do your homework, decide on the best combination of high protein food and you will be on your way.<bio>Discover how to get your dream body! Bodybuilding, Fitness, Weight Loss and Supplements</bio>

Those that have a hard time gaining muscle most of the time think that it has something to do with their workout routine or their supplementation. After they've been lifting weights for a while without seeing any muscle building results, they immediately think that they must be on the wrong bodybuilding program.

They start to add in all kinds of techniques that they read in some bodybuilding magazine or website. They start to add in supersets, forced reps, negatives, giant sets, heavier weights, static contractions, stretch overload, so on and so forth. Or they'll begin to add more exercises, sets, frequency, etc.

Or, they'll run to the nearest supplement store or internet site and begin to pour their hard-earned money on testosterone boosters, prohormones, weight gainers, protein bars / shakes, pre-workout / post-workout drinks, creatine, NO2, glutamine, branch chain amino acids, etc., etc.

Yet, after all of that extra effort, time, and money spent, they still are getting the same muscle gaining results..........nothing!

Wanna know why?

Because they fail to look at the number one factor on how to gain muscle .........eating more calories. That is 99% of the time the problem, not their training or supplementation.

And I love it when I hear someone complain that "no matter what they do they can't gain any muscle mass". But when asked how many calories or food their eating, it is always, and I mean always, not enough, even though they swear up and down that they do.

Sure, they think their eating a lot of food, and they may be doing so a day here and a day there. But when you look at how they eat over the course of several months, you'll see that they are eating like a bird, and that's why they look like one.

Trust me, I know what it feels like. A lack of an appetite is what kept me from gaining muscle mass naturally for years on end.

Well, here are a few tips and tricks to increase your natural appetite so that you can actually start to eat enough to grow, even though you may be fooling yourself into thinking you already are (but hey, regardless of what your stomach may be telling you, if you haven't gained any significant amount of muscle in a while, it's time to look in the mirror).

First, avoid eating foods that are very acidic, like carrots, orange juice, tomatoes, lemons, limes, and other citrus fruits......since a high level of acid tells the brain to slow digestion down, which will result in a lot of food just sitting in your stomach, killing your appetite.

Second, don't eat too much protein, since this releases certain hormones that also tell your brain to slow digestion down.

Third, don't eat a lot of foods that contain a lot of sodium, like frozen foods and canned soup. Again, sodium also tells the body to slow digestion down, and, again, taking away your appetite.

And, avoid a lot of fiber, since fiber stretches the intestines, bloats you, and fools the brain into thinking you're "full". <bio>Did you know that simply eating more food isn't enough to gain muscle without body fat? With the protein shake diet you enjoy the tasty flavor of protein diet shakes in between your regular meals - yeah, you drink protein shakes, eat less of your regular meals and lose weight.

It is not impossible, it is very simple -- the protein diet shakes are portion controlled and rich in variety of nutrients, so when you eat them between your meals, you are not starving until your next meal. You can substitute any of your regular meals with high protein diet shake or other snack. How? Calculate the number of calories from the packets details (do not to exceed 1200 calories per meal), follow the preparing directions and your meal is ready.

Most protein diet shakes are portion controlled and contain whey protein isolate, no fats or in insignificant amounts, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fibers, carbohydrates and very little amounts of sugar.

With protein shake diet you can choose the type of protein shakes you like and wanna drink. But whichever high protein shake you choose, you should know that every product has a plan for taking or recommends a proper diet plan to follow.

You can design and adjust the protein shake diet to help you reach your weight loss goal, but you need to have a good knowledge on diet menu planning, combining and portioning of the basic nutrients from protein shakes. That is why there are many easy to follow and time saving diet plans that will also help you lose weight faster.

Protein Shake Diet Pros

- Easy preparing and consumption -- all in all not more than 5 to 10 minutes.

- Delicious flavors

- Each protein diet shake can give you all you need in one single serving

- Subtle and successful weight loss

Protein Shake Diet Cons

Though it may sound like a fad diet, the protein shake diet can help you lose weight and with proper meal planning afterwards you can maintain your reduced weight easily.

You may feel a severe hunger for the first couple of days, but it will pass shortly.

You can't drink protein diet shakes for the rest of your life and that's the greatest cons of the protein shake diet.

Conclusion

You do not need to be on shakes for life. Just follow the protein shake diet to lose the weight you need and maintain your new weight by proper meal planning, smart food choices and exercising.
Enzymes are the workers in the human body that make everything function by enabling chemical reactions. All the living cells in body contain enzymes but they are hard to visualize, since they are not tangible things. Enzymes are one of the most important things in human body that do everything ranging from helping us to breathe to digestion to living life. So most chemical reactions in the body would occur too slowly without the effects of enzymes.

An enzyme is a protein that catalyzes, or speeds up a chemical reaction. Enzymes help in digestion of food. The digestive enzymes in our human bodies break down food into tiny particles that get easily accumulated by the body into the blood stream. These are the compounds that our human body uses for fuel, repair and growth. Food is filled with enzymes called "food enzymes" that help in the digestion of food. When we cook our food we unconsciously destroy those enzymes.

How do pancreas work?

Our body, in general, can manufacture enzymes called "digestive enzymes" in our pancreas. When we eat a diet that is filled with mostly cooked and processed foods, devoid of all enzymes, then pancreas starts working hard on it and thus manufactures the enzymes that the body needs to digest the food. So pancreas overworks and the body starts spending much more energy and resources on digestion instead of spending on important things like boosting an immune system, fighting diseases and repairing body parts.

Types of enzymes

However you should try to heal the overworking capacity in pancreas by filling it with an abundance of enzymes. Foods rich in enzymes include raw materials, vegetables, seeds and nuts, as well as marinated and fermented foods. After you complete overloading your pancreas with enzyme supplementation you can check with your health care provider whether you need more medication to improve on your enzyme building system.

Food enzymes not only help in digestion procedure but they also help in cleansing the body, breaking down allergens and environmental products that can potentially prove to be harmful. So we should always have a diet that contains a range of fresh enzyme filled foods, to make our bodies stay disease free.

Capacity of enzymes

For most enzymes to operate in the body, the optimal temperature is 37 degree Celsius or 98 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the human enzymes have a maximal activity at pH around 7.2, which is the pH of most body fluids. However, there are exceptions such as, pepsin. However, this enzyme is most effective in the highly acidic conditions of the stomach, pH 2. The pancreatic enzymes work optimally in the alkaline conditions of pH 8.5 of the small intestine.

Enzymes have a plethora of responsibilities in the body, digestion, metabolism of carbohydrates, and much more. With all the right ingredients of enzymes, the body can remain fit and healthy. <bio>Author Barney Garcia is a proud contributing author and enjoys writing about many different topics.
When you exercise, you do it in order to try to maintain good health. You know that you have to eat so that your body has the energy to perform the workouts that you do as well as for everyday tasks. But, just what you should eat before and after you workouts is important for making the best of your workouts. Also, how long you eat before and after each workout is equally important.

Whether you are going to be doing a cardio workout or a resistance workout, you should try to make it a point to eat a mix of carbohydrates and protein. What determines the percentage of carbohydrates and protein you should consume is whether you are doing cardio or resistance and the intensity level you will be working at.

The ideal time to eat your pre workout meal is 1 hour before you start. If you are working at a lower intensity level, keep this meal down to around 200 calories or so. If you are working at a higher intensity level, you may need this meal to be as high as 400 to 500 calories.

If you are doing a cardio session, you will need to eat a mix of around 2/3 carbohydrates and 1/3 protein. This will give you longer sustained energy from the extra carbs with enough protein to keep muscle from breaking down during your workout.

If you are doing a resistance session, you should eat a mix of around 1/3 carbohydrates and 2/3 protein. This will give you enough energy from the carbs to perform each set you do and the extra protein will help keep muscle breakdown to a minimum during your workout. It has been shown that your body most effectively uses protein during exertion meaning that taking in more protein before resistance workouts aids in faster recovery as well.

Now, eating after a workout is just as important as the pre workout meal. Remember that when you exercise whether it is a cardio or a resistance session, you deplete energy in the form of glycogen. Our brain and central nervous system relies on glycogen as their main source of fuel so if we don't replace it after exercise, our bodies will begin to break down muscle tissue into amino acids, then convert them into usable fuel for the brain and central nervous system.

Also, mostly during resistance workouts, you break down muscle tissue by creating micro tears. This means that right after a workout; your muscles go into a repair mode. Proteins are the key macronutrient for muscle repair and so you don't want muscle breaking down further to create fuel in place of lost glycogen.

If you have just finished a cardio session, you will need to consume mostly carbohydrates, preferably ones with high fiber. Oatmeal, rice, whole wheat pasta, and most northern fruits are good sources. Try to consume around 30 to 50 grams of these carbohydrates after a cardio session. After cardio, it is ok to eat within 5 to 10 minutes of completion.

If you have just finished a resistance session, you will need a combination of carbohydrates and protein. Because unlike cardio workouts, with resistance workouts you are breaking down muscle tissue by creating micro tears. The protein is needed to build up and repair these tears so the muscle can increase in size and strength. The carbs not only replace the lost muscle glycogen, but also help the protein get into our muscle cells so it can synthesize into structural protein, or muscle itself.

Chicken or fish with a potato, egg whites with a piece of fruit, or a protein shake with fruit mixed in are good meals after resistance workouts but remember to keep the fiber low here. High fiber slows down digestion, meaning the protein will take longer to reach the muscle cells.

After resistance, it is recommended to wait 30 minutes before eating so as not to take blood away from your muscles too soon. The blood in your muscles helps with the repair process by removing metabolic waste products from them.

Any fats should be consumed well before and well after exercise. <bio>Jim O'Neill gives you tons of valuable information on the subjects of weight loss, fitness, and nutrition to make it easy for you to live a healthy lifestyle.
Bodybuilding means proper discipline with time management, training and of your diet intake. No, bodybuilding isn't just about physical hard work but it also requires wise decision in setting up diet plans for your daily intake. Since a bodybuilder requires a lot of work out, proper nutritional supplement is highly needed.

But don't perceive bodybuilding diet as a difficult element in achieving your bodybuilding goals. It doesn't take a lot of time to decide which appropriate you should choose since most likely, energy-giving food is going to be on top of your diet list. Don't forget though that you also need to complete your other nutritional needs to balance out everything.

Protein enriched foods should be a priority. You might ask why. It's simply because protein-rich foods is responsible for developing muscle synthesis and since your goal is entirely devoted to developing body muscles, you need not to argue why there's a need for you to drink milk or include eggs in your meals. For better protein consumption though, ensure that you consume about a gram of any food rich in protein for every pound of your bodyweight daily.

Assuming your total weight minus body fat is 190 pounds. This means that you should consume 190 grams of food rich in protein everyday. But you don't have to take it all in one sitting. Divide your protein consumption depending on the grams you need to take each day. If you eat five times a day for example, divide 190 grams to five. This is easier since you don't have to eat all the 190 grams of protein food in one go. But other problems may occur. You may not be able to take the entire amount of grams you need per day. If this is the case, you can resort to supplements rich in protein instead.

Keep in mind that protein is just a portion of what you need to have everyday as a bodybuilder. Watch your body fat as well. Your calorie and complex carbohydrates intake should also be monitored. <bio>Shareen Aguilar is a writer for Bodybuilding Training Program http://www.body-building-book.com which has information on Bodybuilding and other fitness topics. </bio>

The question has been asked many times. Just how does protein affect a dog's body and why do they need it. Proteins help to build a strong dog with hair, ear and a nose. Without protein, the body does not develop in a way to sustain life.

The muscular building block of protein consists of twenty-three amino acids. The dog produces about thirteen amino acids on the inside and the other ten on the outside of the body where it is consumed. If a puppy is not given the ten outside amino acid sources, it will not grow and develop. Without the outside source of amino acids, a puppy with not grow and will become sick and can die. An adult dog on the other hand will suffer a deficiency of nutrition and grow weak.

The best source for amino acids is plants and meat, which contain the largest amounts of amino acids that are needed for growth and strength. Some proteins are better than others are because not all protein supplies are the same. The amount of protein needed depends on the amount of protein in the amino acids. A dog just as a human does needs to have a daily-recommended amount of amino acids, which are also called biological value.

Understanding how important protein is for a dog is important when you are choosing the proper foods. If your dogs food lacks the needed proteins, they could become weak and develop a protein deficiency.

Five Facts about Protein

Proteins are the building block of the body and are needed to build strong bones and muscles. A lack of protein is called protein deficiency.

A dog's immune system and structural makeup relies on protein to develop and grow as the dog grows. Without enough protein, the dog will become a structural disaster. Growth will not appear in a dog with a lack of protein.

Proteins help with the growth of the coat, skin and nails. Without protein, the dog's coat can become dull and fall out at a high rate of speed.

The immune system relies on proteins to continue to protect the body from diseases and other such infections. Without a properly developed immune system, a dog can contact a disease or an infection and die as a result because their immune system cannot fight the ailment.

Proteins can come in many different sources. Check your usual dog food to make sure that it's got enough protein. Good protein sources would include beef, chicken, lamb, and other real meats. Poor sources include bonemeal and chickenmeal. If you'd like to supplement your usual dog food with extra protein, a good option would be to add some raw ground beef and mix it with the dry food. The fat content isn't really that important. The standard 85% lean ground beef mix will work just fine and dandy. You don't have to use the extra lean grades like 93% lean or 99% lean. Your dog will be fine with the additional fat. He's not worried about love handles. <bio>For more information, visit http://www.ohmydogsupplies.com/ </bio>

There are a lot of protein supplements available nowadays for those trying to lose weight or build larger muscles. These protein supplements can be fast release or slow release. Which protein powder you should seek depends on your needs and goals.

The foremost thing you had better do is taste a sampling from each protein powder prior to purchasing one. If you are interested in more common flavors such as chocolate and vanilla, then check out the supplies at your local gym and check if there are sample packs or single servings of the various flavored protein powders. Perhaps you are thinking it is foolish buying a protein powder based upon taste, but trust me, there is a huge difference between protein powders. Why would you buy a flavor that you choke on whilst you drink it? You many also get stuck with one that is so lumpy you swear you are going to choke on a lump of dry powder. You must refuse to blow away your hard earned cash on a protein powder that tastes so ordinary you end up buying something elee and discarding the rest of the tub. Been there, done that! Be sure to do the taste test.

Luckily there is a fast way to pick a protein powder that's guaranteed to taste good. Pick any flavor of Muscle Milk! Yes, I'm sure you have heard about the taste, its true. If you google "best tasting protein powder", you will find many a muscle milk review showing that Muscle Milk dominates the protein market in terms of taste and quality. Muscle Milk is simply yummy. You'll have no trouble consuming the protein powder as many times as you need to. You will find yourself having extra shakes because it tastes so good. Muscle Milk also mixes very easily too. In the past I have thrown away a close to full container of a different brand as it just resisted mixing. I even blended it for about 5 minutes and still found lumps. Muscle Milk comes in many flavors too besides chocolate, in fact there is close to 30 flavors, cake batter is the new favorite.

Those who are serious about building muscle will understand how crucial it is to find a perfect protein supplement, which is all about choosing the right protein blend for you. If you don't know much about protein, you need to understand that there are many types that all work differently. I think the best options is to choose a protein that combines various protein sources so that you have both fast and slow release proteins in your system. Combining casein and whey is the best pick according to most studies - so be sure to check the label for this.

So should you choose muscle milk as your protein supplement? I have had great results with this product and so have my training partners, however it can be different for each person. I would suggest you read some muscle milk reviews from people who tried this product and observed the results, then you will have a better understanding if it is right for you.<bio>To read muscle milk reviews from users visit Muscle Milk Review http://www.muscle-milk-review.com</bio>

This is the third article in a five part series devoted to digestion where we have been following a nutritionally poor meal, typical of America, from the mouth to the esophagus to the stomach. We have seen that the food enters the mouth where enzymes are added via sublingual glands. The meal then moves through the esophagus where it is warmed, and then to the stomach where pre-digestion takes place depending on the nutritional value of the meal (does the meal have enzymes to digest protein, fats and carbohydrates). Then stomach acid and a strong protein digesting enzyme are added to complete the stomachs processing of this meal. Now we will follow this nutritionally poor meal from the stomach into the duodenum.

The Function of the Duodenum

The chyme (digested food from stomach the consistency of a milk shake) is slowly transported from the pylorus (a valve at the end portion of the stomach) through the pyloric sphincter into the first part of the small intestine called the duodenum where further digestion occurs.

The inside wall of the duodenum has a smooth surface like the skin on your face. It is at this point that the acidic chyme must be alkalized so the assimilation of this nutrient filled liquid is as complete as possible. In addition, this alkalization is very important so that the acid from the stomach is neutralized and will not burn the walls of the small intestine.

The duodenum, an eight to nine inch long chamber is where more chemicals of digestion are added. The Ampule of Papilla is located in the duodenum wall. This is an opening where bile from the gallbladder, and enzymes and bicarbonate from the pancreas enter the duodenum. They combine with the chyme to begin the final part of digestion in the small intestines. Enzymes are also excreted through the walls of the duodenum to assist with this digestion.

The Average American Meal and what happens at the Duodenum

Your body is aware of what you have eaten (there are sensors in the duodenum) and it calls on your liver, gallbladder, pancreas and other avenues of digestive chemicals to assist in the breakdown and assimilation of nutrients and protection of the digestive tract. Your body expects you to bring in live food rich in enzymes (uncooked foods such as produce) to assist in this digestive process.

Here at the duodenum is where the body has a chance to recover from any mistakes made at your mouth. But without enough raw food to supply the enzymes and alkaline that was needed to create a balanced meal no recovery will take place. A meal totally unprepared will continue through the duodenum to the small intestine where impossible assimilation is undertaken. From this point on the damage to your body takes place over and over bringing disease.

If you do not bring in enough live enzymes with the food you have eaten you may expect to have acid indigestion (undigested food), acid reflux, ulcers and constipation all caused by food improperly prepared at your mouth (no live enzymes). As this improperly prepared food enters the duodenum, your digestive awareness will call on the pancreas and gallbladder to do the job you did not do. Your pancreas and gallbladder will then strain to prepare this acidic chyme for release into the small intestine. Allow this to happen enough times and you will get sick.

Constantly releasing acidic unprepared chyme from the duodenum to the small intestine, can lead to such diseases as Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease and leaky gut. These in turn can lead to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, muscular dystrophy, etc.<bio>Paul Blake is a doctor of herbal medicine and a master herbalist.
There is more to do for your dog, when it comes to buying food for him or her to eat, then simply going to the grocery or pet store and picking up the cheapest bag of food you can find. Different formulas for foods mean varying levels of quality and effectiveness in helping your dog. The following ingredients that are listed have different, albeit positive, effects on your pet, utilizing them properly can be beneficial towards reaching a long and productive life.

Protein

Protein is a vital ingredient in a lot of puppy formulas that populate the pet food market. This is mainly rooted in the fact that protein helps in the promotion of developing the muscles of your pet at an early stage. It also becomes beneficial to the aiding the natural growing process of your dog.

Fat

While too much fat is harmful for any animal (both humans and dogs alike), a proper, controlled amount can be very beneficial for the health of your dog. For one, fat helps provide energy for your pet throughout its life. It also helps in the promotion of healthy skin. Finally, and this is very important during the winter months, it aids in the growth of a lush fur coat. Finding a formula with just the right amount of fat included can make for a healthy animal.

Vitamins and Minerals

These ingredients probably spring to mind first when trying to decipher what exactly constitutes a healthy formula for providing nutrition to animals. Various vitamins exist that provide varying, yet beneficial, effects. Ditto for minerals. Mainly, they provide help in the promotion and development of the bones in your animal's body. There are a slew of additional benefits, but they are discovered on a case-to-case basis depending on the specific vitamins and minerals.

Fiber

In a way, fiber can prevent your dog from putting on too much weight. In a nutshell, fiber helps digestion to become a faster process. This makes excretion more frequent and less uncomfortable. Also, fiber, and the sped up digestion, increase the metabolism of your dog. This metabolism keeps your pet lean and also promotes an increased lifespan.

Even the cheapest of dog foods have some redeeming qualities, as there are a minimum number of nutrients for manufacturers to put in their formulas. But to find a quality product, locating the aforementioned ingredients is key to providing your canine with food that will promote health, aid in development, and prolong life. Certain circumstances may require additional ingredients (such as particular health issues), but discussing any and all problems with your normal veterinarian will lead you to the right blend of nutrients in the dog food you should purchase. But, as long as you have a healthy dog, a basic formula containing the ingredients listed above, and any others you or your vet deem beneficial, should do more than suffice. The bottom line, however, is that if you love your dog, you should not hesitate to spring a little more for a higher quality formula as opposed to feeding your pet any old dog food.<bio>For more information or to find products for all your Dogs needs please visit Just Dogs is JUST for DOGS and Cosmos Delicious Dog Treats</bio>

Remember all those times mom told you to chew your food? She was on to something. Beneficial enzymes released by your salivary glands jumpstart the digestive process, which in turn facilitates the breakdown of food and the subsequent transfer of nutrients, water and electrolytes from the digestive tract to the bloodstream.

The chemical processes of digestion begin with reducing food's larger constituents to smaller and smaller molecules. Within this procedure, enzymes catalyze the chemical reactions, making it possible for food to be digested and absorbed. Each type of food we eat contains different combinations of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, as well as vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. The end result of the digestive process is that those nutrients are broken down into forms usable by the body's cells. For example, when proteins from meat or vegetarian foods are digested, they are broken down into amino acids, which are subsequently used to build the proteins incorporated into organs and body tissues.

Further, because unhealthy eating habits can lead to a buildup of harmful toxins in the body (which can subsequently lead to weight gain and poor health), adding a daily enzyme supplement to your diet may also help rid the body of toxic chemicals. Many experts believe that taking supplementary enzymes to aid digestion enables the body to devote more time to producing the enzymes that help eliminate toxins. When choosing a digestive enzyme supplement, look for a formula that combines several different enzymes such as lipase (to help digest fats), amylase (for carbohydrates), and protease (for proteins), as this combination more closely mimics natural enzyme activity. If you have a particular digestive problem, however, individual enzymes can provide targeted support. For example, those who are lactose intolerant may benefit from supplementing with lactase, the enzyme that helps break down milk sugar.

Proteolytic enzymes, which help break down protein, are now available from the kiwi fruit (kiwi protease), pineapple (bromelain) and papaya (papain). Research shows that these enzymes help the body break down protein, casein, and gluten. Digestive enzymes are also effective in the fight against inflammation.

Plant-based enzymes are gaining popularity as people discover their potential to help promote healthy digestion. The main advantage of these supplements is their versatility: although each person's digestive system varies in its acidity and alkalinity, plant enzymes are equally effective in both types of environments. But the bottom line is simple: Supplementing with digestive enzymes relieves the body of some of the burden of creating these chemicals, giving it the opportunity to invest more energy in making other types of enzymes, such as those used for detoxification. Doing so can also release energy to repair damaged tissue and slow the aging process, offering our bodies a valuable defense against the many stresses of our modern lifestyle. <bio>Brenda Watson is a New York Times Bestselling author, a Naturopathic Doctor and President of Renew Life Formulas.
