This is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to one or more terrifying events.<br><br>The history of PTSD date back to the early 1800's where military doctors began diagnosing soldiers with "exhaustion" following the stress of battle. This "exhaustion" was characterized by mental shutdown due to individual or group trauma. Around this time there was a syndrome in England called 'railway spine' or 'railway hysteria which bares a resemblance to what we call PTSD today. This was found by people who had been in the catastrophic <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/railway+accidents" rel="tag">railway accidents</a> of that time.<br><br>In World War I and II the term 'shell shock' and combat fatigue' were terms to describe veterans who exhibited stress and anxiety after being in combat. The official designation of "<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/post+traumatic+stress" rel="tag">Post Traumatic Stress</a> Disorder" did not come about until 1980 when the Third edition of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/diagnostic+and+statistical+manual" rel="tag">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual</a> of Mental Disorders (DSM) was published.<br><br>This anxiety disorder occurs when you are afraid and your body activates the fight or flight response. This reaction to fight releases adrenaline, which is responsible for increasing your blood pressure and heart rate as well as increasing glucose to muscles (to allow you to run away quickly in the face of immediate danger). However when this danger has gone your body begins to go through a process that shuts down the stress response and this process involves the release of another hormone known as cortisol. If your body doesn't generate enough cortisol to shut down the stress reaction you may continue to feel the effects of adrenaline. Trauma victims who develop post-traumatic stress disorder often have higher levels of other stimulating hormones (catecholamines) under normal conditions in which the threat of trauma is not present. These same hormones kick in when they are reminded of their trauma.<br><br>Military <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/post+traumatic+stress+disorder" rel="tag">Post Traumatic Stress Disorder</a> is a very serious disorder with symptoms such as self harm, anger, violence and drug addiction as well as depression. For example, most people would consider losing their job as more stressful than getting married. Under normal conditions, the heart has a way of taking instruction from the mind so that it receives guidelines about what to believe about such circumstances and how to hold them in a way that gives them believability and credibility. But under the circumstance of severe and ongoing trauma or of a single traumatic incident of great intensity, the heart no longer believes that there is any explanation that is credible for what it is feeling or perceiving, and no longer knows how it will survive the need to continue enduring what cannot be explained. This is a perception of the heart rather than the mind, for the mind may hold explanations, but these do not appear to make a difference to the heart. <br /><br /> Often, one who has experienced severe trauma - whether on a battlefield, in a violent or cruel relationship, as a victim of sudden brutality, terror, or horror, or, as a witness of severe violence done to others - first becomes numb to these circumstances as a way of turning down the volume of nervous system overload that is a result of the situation. However, when numbing is not possible, either because the situation continues without let-up at the same high level of intensity and the body's fear responses are continuously activated, or, because the sense of disbelief and shock have already taken hold, and one has already begun to feel that nothing makes sense, symptoms of PTSD can begin to be observed. <br /><br /> The violence and horror that are the general precursors to PTSD can occur in many forms. They can occur through one's own being the subject of cruelty, abuse, or horror, or they can occur through witnessing someone else or a group of others in this role. The heart, having come to the end of its capacity to tolerate the pain of its own experience, begins to look for ways to compensate for the amount of distress it is feeling so that its very survival can continue. <br /><br /> The spiritual context in which PTSD develops is an outgrowth of the emotional, for the powerful emotional resonance of PTSD produces a separation of the lower emotional body from the higher, so that an infusion of light from the higher Self which might otherwise transform the situation and make it more bearable, becomes difficult or impossible. For many who experience traumatic situations, the experience, in retrospect, is one in which the individual does not know how they got through it, feeling that something unknown took over that made survival possible. This 'something' is often a transfusion of spiritual energy from the higher energy bodies into the heart center so that more capacity exists to deal with the present circumstances. Such a transfusion of light occurs in many instances of difficulty for individuals, for each soul who is severely challenged in life is being helped from the soul level of their being as well as by other beings of light who may be assisting. Nevertheless, where the heart has become enveloped with its own pattern of resonance with energies of terror, despair, confusion, anger or helplessness, it can happen that the higher bodies cannot gain access to the level of the physical self in order to further self-healing. As a result, the physical self who experiences the results of trauma can come to feel that there is no way to relieve it. <br /><br /> There are many forms of treatment that have been refined, today, for <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/post+traumatic+stress" rel="tag">post traumatic stress</a> disorder, and also many who are in need of this help. The spiritual incorporation of greater light into the body and heart would add to these, the possibility for creating a bridge of light and healing so that the woundedness of the heart could be held in a different energy than the one it is presently resonating with. This practice of alignment with the higher levels of oneself, carried out regularly, can serve the purposes of healing, enabling many more to find their way back from traumatic situations than can occur at the present time. It is also true that in a future in which such separation of energy bodies might take place, there would be enough transmitted light so that the seamless reconstruction of the pathways between upper and lower bodies could take place as a normal part of the maintenance processes of the entire spiritual-physical being. <br /><br /> For now, both the current ways of addressing PTSD and the incorporation of light from the spiritual dimension are effective means of addressing the healing needs of PTSD, the latter by increasing the joining of the physical self with the self-of-light so that a new energy can enter the picture and alter the disabling conditions from within. PTSD is the fourth-ranking psychiatric disorder in the United States. <br /><br /> An estimated 1 out of 8 soldiers who will eventually return from Iraq will suffer from PTSD-=96most often from having been through multiple deployments and witnessing the carnage left by suicide and roadside bombers. However the soldiers themselves are not the only victims: Family members will also be affected by their soldier's PTSD. Particularly if their soldier avoids social situations and other activities he previously enjoyed. <br /><br /> Although I was never in the armed forces, I am a survivor of PTSD who can offer tips to soldiers with that problem and their families. As a woman raped at gunpoint by strangers, I often experienced flashbacks in which I heard the voice of the rapist when I was at work or <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/washing+dishes" rel="tag">washing dishes</a> at home. There were six steps that helped me cope with PTSD, which I would like to share with you: <br /><br /> 1. If you have never talked about your PTSD experience with anyone you should do so by finding a place in which you feel safe and a person with whom you will feel safe confiding. In that safe place with your confidant at your side, scream, cry and vent as fully as you can, holding nothing back. <br /><br /> 2. Seek treatment as soon as possible from a specialist in PTSD such as a therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist. Only a specialist can help you effectively deal with the symptoms you may be experiencing. In addition to flashbacks, these might include nightmares, depression, insomnia and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/feelings+of+hopelessness" rel="tag">feelings of hopelessness</a> and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/social+isolation" rel="tag">social isolation</a>. The specialist may suggest medication that may be helpful. The worst mistake PTSD suffers can make is trying to go it alone. Attempting to do so may cause you to remain stuck in this nightmare for your entire life. Remember that there is nothing manly about refusing to get help. Soldiers can seek help at Walter Reed Medical Hospital or do a Google search to find a local person who specializes in the disorder. <br /><br /> 3. Join a group therapy support group. Your specialist may refer you to such a group that puts you in contact with others who are going through the same process. By listening to their stories and sharing your own you will understand that you are not alone. <br /><br /> 4. Look for other ways to let off steam. Exercise, paint, dance or keep a journal of your thoughts. I kept a journal for eight years and eventually turned it into a book. Even if you don't feel like it, make yourself socialize. Go to picnics and family gatherings and try to resume old hobbies. Don't isolate yourself. <br /><br /> 5. Put your PTSD into perspective. Even if you take all the steps I have outlined, you may find that you continue to have some episodes of nightmares, anger, fear or depression. But as those symptoms ease, you may be ready to move on to the stage in which you accept that this horrible thing happened to you but does not define your life. You have talked it out, let it out and put it in perspective. You are ready to move on. <br /><br /> 6. Volunteer to help others with PTSD. When you have reached the stage of acceptance and forgiveness you may feel ready to help others who are not as far along as yourself in recovering from PTSD. This is the stage I am currently in. Some suffer from panic disorder where there are unpredictable attacks of panic on the person, with its physiological consequences, while some others feel helpless in an embarrassing situation and this is <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/agoraphobia" rel="tag">agoraphobia</a>. There are also others suffering from various other phobias like <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fear+of+heights" rel="tag">fear of heights</a>, insects and water. It is best to avoid these situations as much as possible in the beginning of your treatment so that there is no feeling of anxiety at all. <br /><br /> It may be needed to approach a psychiatrist to help in the treatment of anxiety. Among the different kinds of anxiety sleep disorder, you will find one that is especially nerve wrecking and that is when you get panic disorders. <br /><br /> Panic Disorders <br /><br /> Panic disorder is a severe instance of anxiety in which the sufferer will feel that something terrible is going to happen and it is also something that can strike without giving any warning. It is used to treat things like schizophrenia, post-<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/traumatic+stress+disorder" rel="tag">traumatic stress disorder</a>, learning disabilities, eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, and other personality or mental health issues that people may be facing in their lives. It works very simply. This therapy is based on eye movements. A stick (sometimes lighted) is in front of a patient in patterns and the patient must follow that stick with their eyes. There may be a connection between the anxiety of autism and EMDR treatments. <br /><br /> Dr. Francine Shapiro invented this theory or practice while strolling through a park and noting that her feelings of anxiety had lessened due to her rapid eye movement. As a result she decided to write her thesis on this premise, however, the school she attended and where she earned her doctorate no longer exists, and was never accredited. However, that does not mean this sort of therapy is not without merit. <br /><br /> The reasoning behind how the treatment works is unclear however for many patients it is the key to reducing symptoms brought about by stressful or shocking experiences. Some suggest EMDR works along the same lines as acupuncture. Just as the chi in the body must be manipulated so that it is running free and clear for good function of the body, the brain must have the same balance.
