So, your perennial border is prepared with the requisite quantities of plant food soil and drainage grit if required. What's next?

* Plant Selection

Once you have gotten this far in the process, it is time to think about actually selecting the plants that will populate the bed or border itself.

My first piece of advice to gardeners selecting perennial plants is to let your mind "drift". Groupings of plants that weave and interlock with other groupings of plants within the same bed are known as "drifts". One cluster of plants begins where another cluster ends and the groups have a flowing effect as they grow to bloom. The shapes that these drifts create should be irregular, weaving through your perennial border and wrapping around other plants. Planting in drifts creates a sense of movement, which in turn will make your garden look alive, full and lush.

Select plants with interesting and contrasting textures. Plant fine leaved perennials with bold leaved specimens. Also, select different flower forms and shapes, select from tubular, loose, flat, round, pendulous spiked etc. Do not be afraid to include some non-perennials as well. Plants like Phormium, Cordyline, ornamental conifers and grasses all add structure and body to the perennial border.

When selecting colours be guided by the following...

Drifts of light or pastel coloured flowers tend to fade into the background, so the quantities of these colours should be larger than the drifts of vivid colours. If you find yourself having colour clashes (red / pink), try creating buffers between these colours with massed plantings of ornamental grasses or plain green leaved plants.

* Planting Rules

To ensure rapid establishment and growth of a perennial or herbaceous border it is important to follow a few simple planting rules.

Water your perennial even before planting. Immerse the pots in water-filled containers for about 10 minutes before planting is the best method, after this time remove them and allow the surplus water to drain away. Remove the pot and if the plant roots are wrapped tightly you should gently tease some free. This will cause new roots to branch out into new soil instead of continually encircling themselves.

When creating a planting hole, the ideal situation would be to make it twice as wide and deep as the pot, don't forget to break up the soil as you dig. The planting depth can be just as important with some perennials, with certain varieties refusing to bloom or thrive if planted at an incorrect depth. A good rule of thumb to follow is to never plant any higher or deeper than the compost level on the pot. Position the plants in the prepared holes and firm the soil around the roots.

Water thoroughly and deeply afterwards; continue doing this twice weekly for a few months to aid establishment. Certain perennials are quite tall upon purchase, I would advise you to reduce these in height to prevent plant failure due to wind rock. Although bark mulch is not a traditional material used on herbaceous borders, the addition of it to soil around your plants will save weeding and retain valuable moisture.

A 5 to 8cm (2 - 3in) layer of bark is sufficient for this purpose. <bio>James Kilkelly is a freelance horticulturalist and garden writer for four Irish regional newspapers.
Cooking can involve so many wonderful ingredients that produce fantastic smells and flavors. Different recipes call for various spices and herbs that you can find bottled at the local grocery store. To enhance those dishes, you may want to consider growing your own herbs and having the opportunity to pick the freshest of herbs and add them to your dish can make a big difference in taste and quality of the dish. Growing your own herbs enables you to pick what you need whenever you need it.

Herbs are not very difficult to maintain provided you have a enough space in a well-light area of your kitchen. Herbs do not require much space to grow and need about six hours worth of sunlight during the daylight hours. Depending on which herbs you use in your cooking, you will have a difference between those that are perennials, which means they grow year after year without needing to replant seeds and there are annuals, which means the plants last only one season and when they die off, new seeds must be planted to re-grow the herbs.

Some classic examples of perennial plants are mint, lavender, chives, tarragon, and thyme. Annual herb plants include dill, chamomile, parsley, cilantro, and basil. For the cooks who do not necessarily have a green thumb, it may be easier to purchase grown plants rather than starting from see. Some of the more common plants may prove to be difficult to grow directly from seed if you are not an experienced gardener. The choice of plants, which can be found at most nurseries or home improvement stores, is up to the chef and what herbs are most likely to be used in regular cooking.

For some ideas on which herbs you may want to cultivate in your own kitchen, here are some of the most common herbs used in recipes:

Sage

Sage is a perennial that comes in different varieties which affect the taste of the herb and the dishes to which sage is added. A variation known as pineapple sage is used for sweetening desserts.

Rosemary

Rosemary is a perennial and a member of the mint family. It is also one of the oldest herbs on record. Rosemary has been used for everything from a cooking ingredient to a healing agent that cures headaches. Rosemary plants can turn into a shrub after several years of growing.

Oregano

Oregano is a perennial that is most often used in tomato sauces, on pizzas, or to season meats.
For a very long time, perennials have been one of the more popular varieties of flowering plants. One of the biggest advantages of planting perennials in your garden is that they come back every year. Perennials are popular with both beginning gardeners and experienced gardeners because of the rewards reaped for planting them and being able to have beautiful flowers for multiple seasons.

Another benefit of planting perennials is that they are often easy plants to maintain. Usually perennials are quite easy to care for, and don't require too much extra maintenance, usually just some good quality soil, adequate water and plenty of sunshine. They do have some issues that you should be aware of, one of the most serious being that they are more apt to get plagued by insect and disease than annuals, which only live for one season. Because perennials remain planted in the ground and come back year after year means that they are prime targets for various types of problems, even in fall or winter.

In order to prevent disease or infestation, it is best to buy the healthiest looking plants that you can find. Pay close attention to the plants you buy at the nursery or home center, and do not buy any that show visible signs of disease, fungus, or insect infestation. Healthy plants are stronger plants, and therefore are better able to withstand any bacteria that might be in the soil. A healthy plant will be able to fungi or bacteria that would likely kill off a weaker one.

If you can find them, look for disease-resistant varieties of perennial plants. They have been specially bred for resistance to diseases and insects. Through the process of selective breeding, perennial plant breeders have worked hard choose certain plant varieties that able to survive many common garden problems.

Once you plant your perennials, check them daily for any signs of disease of insect infestation. The ideal time to do this is when you are performing your normal plant maintenance, such as weeding or watering them. Make it part of your general plant maintenance routine. Look for plants with wilted leaves, holes or chew marks on the leaves, dark areas on the leaves or flowers, or chew marks or cut marks on the stems. If you notice any problems, use a gardening manual consult a more experienced gardener to figure out the problem. If you diagnose the problem quickly and accurately, you have a better chance of saving the plant.

The method that you use to water your perennials can affect whether they become diseased. Watering from overhead, such as with sprinklers, promotes the water to pool up on the leaves, which can encourage mold or bacteria to spread among the plants. It is preferred that you water at the root, either through drip irrigation or a garden hose. Not only will this keep water from pooling up on the leaves and flowers, but it the water will reach the roots more quickly, where it really needs to be.

Good care for your perennials is not over at the end of the growing season. It is important to continue to care for your plants even after they have stopped flowering. Make sure you prune your perennial plants according to the specifications for the particular variety. While some varieties of perennials need to be trimmed back drastically, others need very little pruning or none at all. It is vital to heed the needs of each of the types of perennials in your garden. <bio>To learn more about flower gardening and get a free gardening report visit http://www.greatflowergardening.info </bio>

Popular with new and more experienced gardeners alike, annuals are some of the most beautiful, lively, and interesting of all flowers. The massive diversity of annuals, their wide range of colors and styles, and their ease of care make annuals an in-demand choice for gardens everywhere.

Do you know what makes and annual plant truly an annual? For an annual to really be an annual, the plant must finish its entire life phase in one planting season. The seeds germinate, the flowers bloom for the spring and summer months, the plant lays its seed and the plant then dies, all in one planting cycle.

There are some plants that are treated as annuals but are not truly annuals. Some sensitive perennial plants are used as annuals and replanted each year, especially in colder northern regions. While these plants could regenerate in warmer planting zones, in colder zone they are can't re-germinate and are planted as annuals instead.

Conversely, some annuals are used as perennials. Some varieties of annuals drop such a large amount of seed in the fall that the seeds are able to germinate and bloom the next year. The plants are not perennials, but their seeds simply germinated and took root, and proceeded to bloom the following year. Some of the more common perennial impersonators include snapdragons and petunias.

There are several ways in which you can start annuals in your garden, either by planting them as seed, buying seedlings (or smaller plants), or buying more established plants. Many annuals can be bought as cell packs, which are a sort of multi-pack. Whenever buy plants to transplant, make sure that you plant them as soon as possible. If you can't plant them immediately, then make sure to keep the plants in a shaded area and water them regularly. Remember to also water the planting area so that you can moisten the soil well before you put your new annuals in the ground.

When using annuals in your garden it is important not to plant them too early in the season. The soil should be warm and the air temperatures should be stable before planting any annuals. To get the annual plant out of its packaging, lift the seedlings gently out of their packs by pushing on the bottom of the container. Try to make sure that the plant and its soil comes out intact.

If the roots of the plant are compressed, loosen them by tenderly breaking up the root ball or cut the sides using a small knife. Doing this will promote deeper rooting and longer plant life after the plants have been put into the ground.

Make sure that you plant your annuals in the ground at the same depth in which they came in the packs. After placing the plants in the ground, gently pack the soil down around the annual and water the area thoroughly. You should then apply a good fertilizer that is phosphorus-rich. Apply the fertilizer at a strength of two tablespoons of fertilizer per gallon of water.

Following these steps will help get your annual garden off to an excellent start. In no time you will have a garden filled with vibrant annual flowers. <bio>To learn more about flower gardening and to pick up a free gardening report visit http://www.flower-gardening-help.info </bio>

If I say herbaceous border or perennial border to you, what comes to mind?

To many people this conjures up images of gardens filled with colourful blooms all summer, only to become empty and barren of flower or leaf during autumn and winter. Many more of you will think of landlord's estate grounds, staffed by teams of subservient garden workers. These workers tend the herbaceous borders requiring constant deadheading, pruning, staking, mulching, feeding, watering and division. Now those impressions may have been the way perennial borders were thought of in the past, today however, perennial borders are somewhat different. They are actually seeing a bit of a mini revival.

* Perennials, alternatives to large lawns

Homeowners who have become tired of the never-ending cycle of feeding, weeding and mowing lawns, have decided to decrease the size of these green areas.

Instead, replanting them with colourful perennial or herbaceous borders. These may have been lawns that their all grown up children once ran and played on, now devoid of that activity. On the other hand, perhaps the homeowner became tired of having the same mirror image lawn as his neighbour; I can tell you there is nothing like a perennial border to change that situation.

* Perennial form and growth

Planting a new perennial border can really help improve your garden.

The plants overall are much faster growing and softer in form than shrubs. It is also interesting to watch these new perennials grow and develop, often shedding their skin of last season foliage only to replenish it the following spring.

* Layout and Soil Preparation

The first thing I would suggest when creating a perennial border is to become nosey.

When out driving or walking, have a look into others gardens, you may see something you like or an idea you can borrow. Another good way to learn new planting ideas is to visit garden open days or gardening exhibitions. When you have an idea of what perennial plants types you like, you can then select a point in your garden to position a border. Try to determine how much sun or shade your chosen location gets. Do not try to make sun-loving plant like the Michaelmas daisy grow in an area that gets a lot of shade.

* Border Shape

Decide the shape of your border.

Do not make your perennial border too narrow, a wide border will be easier to maintain and look far more awash with lush planting. Go gentle on the curves, we all like a curving border but avoid a very fussy serpentine shape. Try to make the border lengthy, you will be able to accommodate many different-sized and blooming plants. Use a long length of hosepipe or heavy rope to mark out the shape of your border, this allows you to adjust until you achieve a comfortable shape. When your shape is decided, you can mark the ground with marker spray or simply by scratching with a stick. Follow this by spraying off any existing grass and weeds (if present) with a translocated herbicide such as "Roundup".

* Preparing Your Soil

Now its time for soil preparation before planting.

Most new garden beds and borders benefit from additional organic material being added to it and dug in. This is especially true of the perennial border. So, dig over the ground thoroughly and remove all traces of perennial weeds and large stones, leave the small stones as they aid drainage and help to regulate the soils temperature. Dig or till in lots of organic matter to improve the soil for your perennials at this stage as well. If you have a good back and you feel up to it, this organic matter is most effective if dug in to a depth of 12 inches. Choose from the following source of organic matter... garden compost, leaf mould, well rotted farmyard manure, spent mushroom compost, garden centre soil enricher. An ideal situation would be to have half your soil made up of organic matter, a great reserve of plant food.

I would advise adding grit at this stage as well if your soil is very heavy, sticky or poorly drained. Digging in a good quantity of sand grit or gravel will open up your soil and allow channels for drainage.

The final part of the soil preparation is to fork around 10-20 grammes of 7-6-17 per metre squared into the soil. If 7-6-17 is not available, then any general-purpose fertiliser applied at the rates stated on its pack will do. After all this is done, you must allow the soil to and its amendments to settle for around a week or two before planting.

This gives you ample opportunity to select and source the plants you would like to inhabit your newly created border. <bio>James Kilkelly is a freelance horticulturalist and garden writer for four Irish regional newspapers.
People tend to think of spring as the season for planting flower seeds, but fall actually makes for a good season to plant flower seeds too. As the fall brings along cold weather, planting becomes a much easier task compared to working in the hot sun of the late spring and summer. It is also a good season for various types of flower seeds to grow their roots just in time for the spring growing season. Certain types of perennial flower seeds do really well when planted in the fall as they get the advantage of adjusting to the weather beforehand. Most of these perennial varieties do not grow soon after they are planted in the fall, but roots are established during this time until the weather is suitable for above ground growth.

Contrary to the common understanding, some annual flower seeds can also be planted in the fall. These hardy annuals, capable of enduring cold weathers, are usually planted as seeds in the fall and start to grow when spring comes. As planting the seeds in the fall gives an early start for the flower seeds to grow, the plants will grow faster compared to those planted in spring, as they already have root systems intact. Gardeners are usually keen on having their flowering plants to flower as soon as possible, and are willing to pay more to get this result. They can also still achieve this result by using cheap seeds to plant with during the fall, as an alternative to buying seedlings to transplant.

Planting flower seed in the fall is really not as strange as it sounds. The natural cycle of flower seeds actually begins in the fall- not the spring. The flowers that begin to fade in the fall drop their seeds in autumn, allowing the seeds time to find receptive ground before the spring rains come. Gardeners can take advantage of this natural cycle by planting when the ground is the most receptive to new seeds. This may be before or after the first frost, depending on local climate. In very cold area, the best time to plant may be after at least one frost. In areas that do not freeze, hardy wildflower seeds can be planted during any month of the fall or winter.

Planting annual, perennial or wildflower seeds in the winter will call for extra care as the ground is more dry and cold during the fall, making it necessary for the ground to be watered in order for it to be receptive to the fresh flower seeds. To make the ground more fertile, potting soil or other organic matter can be used. Until the ground has frozen, the seeds will require a lot of water and organic matters, and watering will need to be done regularly until the earth freezes. Seeds planted in the areas that freezes will require some protection in order to stop the new roots from being frozen and thawed repetitively during the winter. To keep the temperature at a constant level for the new flower seeds, mulch can be applied to the soil. <bio>Jeff is the founder and president of http://cheapseeds.com, a leading retailer of flower seeds, wild flower seeds, perennial seeds, annual flower seeds and much much more. </bio>

One difference concerning garden design with perennials from other kinds of flowers is that perennials take a year to really fill in. If you are looking for instant gratification, you might want to simultaneously have an additional non-perennial garden to satisfy your immediate needs.

Even in the second year of garden design with perennials, your garden will not look the least bit impressive. Again, if you start second garden at the same time, you'll have something to bring you some gardening joy while you are waiting for your perennials to mature.

Most people who haven't dabbled in garden design with perennials are literally shocked in year three as the plants burst out in growth and color. At this time, you'll be thinking about how you can get rid of that instant-gratification garden you had going while you were waiting.

Now, don't think you can just sit on your behind as your garden is in full bloom. Your plants will start to take on minds of their own, some maturing even more, while others wither away and die. One of the many advantages of garden design with perennials is that the plants are easy to move. You will find in year three that the garden doesn't look quite like you though it would and you'll want to make some rearrangements and changes.

Something to consider while garden design with perennials is growing extra plants in a separate area. Since the wait time for a mature-looking garden is two years, any additions you make will take two years to catch up with the rest. Plant perennials in several places, even in areas you hadn't considered. This way, after all the gardens mature, you can move plants around to get the design you want.

The Importance of Planning Your Garden Design With Perennials

Those not experienced in garden design with perennials will also want to talk with an hold hand. The challenge with this variety is anticipating what it is going to look like in two years. Depending on the plants you choose, you are going to want to pay attention to factors like spacing. Your plants will look quite sparse for the first two years, and then all of a sudden they'll looked crammed together. In addition to talking with an expert, you may want to check out some garden design software to see if that can help you (see link above).

Garden design with perennials can be fun and rewarding as long as you know that you are going to have to wait for the payoff. In addition to you garden design with perennials, you might want to plant a garden with varieties that will payoff immediately to keep you interested. And finally, plant perennials than you will need so that you can add in or take out flowers until you get the garden you want. <bio>Jonathan sends out gardening tips to his newsletter subscribers.
A weed is not a specific type of plant, it is simply an unwanted plant or a plant that is growing where it is not wanted. Once upon a time, this weed was a wanted plant and may have been introduced to the locality for a particular use -- to look pretty, to be used in cooking or for culinary purposes. However, the plant has now become undesirable and has been labelled a "weed".

Due to the fact that they are native plants and are ideally adapted to their local environment, weeds can take over an area of land or a garden very quickly. They are unwanted because they compete with wanted garden plants for nutrients in the soil, water, light and space and can push out more fragile plants. It is important to do regular weeding in your garden, to stop the growth and spread of these undesirables, so that your other plants can grow. You do not need any high tech or expensive equipment to get rid of weeds in your garden - just buy a small garden hand fork and some gardening gloves and use a washing up bowl or bucket to collect weeds in. For bigger, established areas, you may need a proper garden fork.

Be careful when disposing of weeds, you do not want any seeds to spread or fragments to fall on the soil and regrow.

When you are thinking about ridding your garden of weeds, you need to consider what type of plant the weed is, so that you will know when and how to deal with it:-

Annual -- An annual weed germinates, matures, produces seeds and dies off in one complete season (year), leaving behind seeds to produce new plants. The seed supply can be vast -- Groundsel plants can produce over 30,000 seeds! Seeds of annual weeds can lie dormant in the soil for many years. For example, the seeds of field speedwell can survive in the ground for over thirty years and even groundsel seeds can lie dormant for up to three years. Dormant seeds are "activated" by a change in conditions -- turning over of soil, a change in temperature, light reaching them etc.

Annual weeds need dealing with before they have the chance to produce seeds. They are relatively easy to remove and control because their whole life cycle is over within one year.

Examples of annual broad leaved weeds are groundsel, common poppy, field forget-me-not, scarlet pimpernel and cleavers.

Examples of annual grass weeds are wild oat, barren brome and winter wild oat.

Biennial -- These weeds take 2 full seasons (years) to grow enough to be able to produce seeds. Typically, during their first year, biennial weeds have a period of growth and of storing nutrients and food reserves. Then, in their second year, biennial weeds flower and produce seeds. After seed production they die off.

You need to remove these weeds in their first year before they can produce seeds. You can either treat them with a herbicide or uproot them by weeding.

Examples of biennial weeds are hogweed, giant hogweed, hemlock, spear thistle and evening primrose.

Perennial -- Perennial weeds survive for many seasons because their roots and stems act as storage systems. They flower and produce seeds over many seasons, without dying off. Even if their top parts are removed by grazing animals, by picking or by weeding, they can regrow. You need to practise careful, heavy duty weeding to get rid of these weeds. Their whole root system must be removed and all stems/vines, otherwise they will regrow.

Examples of perennial broad leaved weeds are clover, bramble, nettle, daisy, dandelion, ground ivy, ground elder, mugwort and Japanese Knotweed.

Examples of perennial grass weeds are common bent, creeping bent, perennial rye grass and rough meadow grass.<bio>Carrie Wykeham is a writer and publisher who writes articles for for Japanese Knotweed Solutions Limited, (http://www.jksl.com), who are the premier UK specialists in the total removal of japanese knotweed.
Perennials are one of my favorite types of plants to have in the garden.

Perennials are flowering plants that go dormant in the winter and return each spring. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of different types of perennials. Perennials have as many different blooming seasons, colors, textures and sizes as there are types. This is what makes perennials so fabulous. Complete gardens can be created from using strictly perennials.

By planting different types of perennials in your gardens you can have color from the first of spring until a hard frost in the fall. If you are lucky enough to live in Planting Zones 8-10 you get to have color all year long!

Some perennials are grown for their striking and beautiful foliage, others for their flower. Some perennials will only bloom once per season, but the show is spectacular! Many perennials will bloom repeatedly throughout the growing season. Dead-heading the spent flowers will encourage more to bloom. Use a good, sharp pair of pruning shears or garden scissors to remove the spent foliage.

Adding compost or organic fertilizer twice per season (spring and fall) your perennials will be lush and beautiful. After a few seasons you will be able to spread these perennials around in your own yard and share them with friends. Another added benefit of perennials, they multiply! Most perennials can be divided easily. Choose a cool day for dividing your plants and make sure the plants get plenty of water, so they will recover quickly.

Planting perennials for the best show...plant them in groups. By planting a few (or more) in the same area you will end up with waves of color in your garden. This is striking. If you would like a more informal look spread them out, so you have color here and there.

When creating a perennial garden, as is a good idea with any garden, lay out the design and place the plants before putting them in the ground. This will give you a good idea of how the garden will look when it is finished. It is easier to make changes before all the holes are dug. Check the information tags to find out the requirements of each plant. If you plant the perennials where they will be happy, the results will astound you.

I even use perennials in my planters. They make an interesting and unusual look in pots and even hanging baskets. I only use annuals as an accent tucked here or there in my planters. This is also a time saver in the spring, your pots will grow all by themselves.

You will get many compliments on your planters, because they are not the same old Impatiens or Petunias. There are many plants that are only perennial in warm climates. That's ok! If you like it, grow it. In the fall simply pull up the plant, (many of these have bulbs or tubers) and store it in a cool dry place for the winter.

Using perennials will allow you to use your creativity and your imagination to create the garden of your dreams.<bio>This article may be reproduced and/or distributed for the purpose of education only, and may not be changed in part or whole.
Planting flower seeds in the spring has some distinct advantages over growing them at any other time of the year. The spring rain and mild temperatures make the ground perfect for sowing new flower seeds. When planting a flower garden, most flower seeds can be planted as soon as there is no more threat of frost. Annual flower seeds particularly need warm weather and spring rains in order to take hold and grow. If the warm weather is present, but not the rain, make sure to water new flower seeds liberally. If the soil is particularly dry, try adding a potting soil or peat moss mixture in order to give flower seeds the best chance to flourish and bloom.

While there are other times of the year for planting flower seeds, spring is the ideal time in for seeds to grow. When planting annual flower seeds in the spring, the gardener doesn't have to wait for the dormant period to be over, and will not be looking at a short life for the plants. Flower seeds grown in the spring will have the advantages of the rain and the spring warmth in which to sprout. Once the ground is thawed and there is not likely to be more frost, it is time to ready flower seed for the garden. In dry areas, the ground will need to be watered regularly in order to create the ideal environment for new flower seeds. In many dry regions, the soil may also call for fertilizer, peat moss, or mulch as well.

Annual flower seeds can be planted as soon as the weather is mild. Hardy annuals, those with a higher tolerance to cold, can be started at the very beginning of the growing season, even if there is the possibility of another frost. For those who wish to have their plants flowering as soon as possible, starting annual flower seeds indoors in the late winter or cold part of the spring, and then transplanting them outdoors, is one way to get early blooms. This makes for an early flower garden using cheap seed instead of using expensive plants or seedlings from a nursery. But annuals are not the only flower seed variety that responds well to spring planting.

As we move on towards the middle of spring, where the weather is lovelier and the frost is long gone, regular annual seeds that require warm temperature can be planted. For hardy annuals you can plant them in the early spring as they have a strong resistance towards cold spring frost. While you plant your hardy annuals, you can simultaneously plant your regular annual flower indoors and later transplant them outdoor when the weather settles. Once you have the regular and hardy annual flowers in your garden, you can see the result of having the prettiest garden as your flower would bloom continuously throughout the season. Besides annual, a lot of other varieties of flower seeds also can be planted in the season of spring as well.

Perennial flower seeds usually need some cold temperatures before being planted, but can do this naturally in the soil. Perennial flower seeds should be started early in the spring both to give them some cold temperatures in which to germinate, and to ensure that they will be large enough by winter to survive freezing temperatures. If the climate is warm and mild all year, these flower seeds may need to be refrigerated before they can be planted. Perennial flower seeds grow into flowers than can live for three years or more, making them a popular favorite for gardeners. Taking special care of these seeds will eliminate the need to replant them each year.

During the early spring, when the temperatures are still teasingly cold, perennial flowers can be planted naturally in the soil. This is because most of the varieties of perennial flowers need a little bit of cold weather to germinate before they began sprouting. This is also to ensure that they would have matured nicely and can withstand the cold and harsh condition when winter arrives. Not only that, growing perennial early in the spring would also guarantee that you would have a blooming garden with flowers earlier than any type flowers. Although not very suitable to plant in warm climate countries, those who simply insist of having them needs to keep them refrigerated before planting to give them time to germinate. Even if one is staying in a cold weather country, and had bought the seeds a little bit too late in the spring they still have to conduct the same practice of refrigerating these flowers. The beauty of perennial however is their life span as they can easily last for three years or more. Their life span would be longer if one takes good care of the seeds and nourish them appropriately.

Another seed that is usually planted in the spring is wildflower seeds. As the seeds can take root easily and are generally less tending than other types of flowers, it is known as one of the hardiest and most resilient flower varieties around. Not only that, they are usually cheaper and can grow easily in most climates. However, it needs to be planted in the early season so they can benefit from the spring rain in order to survive. It does not require any special fertilizers but may need some tilling in order to grow. Because wildflower seeds are cheap, easy to grow, require little labor and resources, most of the states have taken to planting them to prevent erosion. That's also the reason why most people plant them at their flower garden.

Although the cost of bearing the wildflower seeds is cheap, the flowers that they produce can be quite a sight. That is also one of the reasons why many homes choose to have the wildflowers at their backyard or even along their driveway. The ease in which they can sprout and grow, as well as requiring little tending and care makes it a favorite in a garden or a yard. To get a better chance of them surviving longer, one can do a little bit of tilling. Like other plants as well, even if it's low maintenance one still need to water it especially during the dry season to ensure it will stay blooming in your garden. <bio>Jeff is the founder and president of http://cheapseeds.com, a leading retailer of flower seeds, wild flower seeds, perennial seeds, annual flower seeds and much much more. </bio>

Everyone needs some form of flower guide to get the most out of their gardens, especially those who may not have time to garden every day. Flower gardening is all about stimulating the senses with a display of colors. So what should we plant, and when?

The buzz in gardening seems to be about whether to plant annual or perennial flowers. Some of these flowers give us textures, shapes and heights, while others just go blooming crazy all season long. Here's a basic flower guide for these two kinds of flowers that will help you design a spectacular wash of color for your garden.

Annual Flower Guide:

Annuals do all of their growing in one season. The seeds germinate in the spring, the plants bloom and grow all season, and then they die. You will have to plant them each season, but the result is instant color. Also, if you make an error in your design about color or height, the wrong effect will only last a year.

Annuals produce an endless array of colors and sizes, and most are easy to plant and grow. They can be used for cuttings, in mass plantings, for edging, in rock gardens, in mixed beds, in containers, and in hanging baskets.

Indeed, most annuals are fabulous plants for the weekend gardener because they are so versatile and not too finicky. For all their glorious color, annuals are very inexpensive. You can start them indoors as seedlings, or buy bedding plants from your nursery or garden center. The majority of annuals bloom for most of the growing season.

Here's a list of some great annual flowers that are easy to grow, show off spectacular colors, and are worth every dig of a trowel to plant:

Begonia - Grows 6 to 12 inches tall. Flowers are white, pink, red, rose and scarlet.

Tricolor Chrysanthemum -- Grows 2 to 3 feet. Flowers are white, yellow, gold, red, or maroon, with contrasting color bands on the base of the petals. (This chrysanthemum is different from the perennial chrysanthemum called the "garden mum".)

Dahlia -- Grows 1 to 6 feet. Flowers are every color except blue and green.

Geranium -- Grows up to 2 feet. Flowers are white, pink, scarlet, orangish-red, red, and salmon.

Impatiens -- Grows to 1 feet. Flowers are white, pink, rose, scarlet, violet, salmon, and orange.

Marigold - Grows 6 inches to 4 feet. Flowers are yellow, gold, orange white, near red, and mahogany.

Zinnia - Grows 6 to 36 inches. Flowers are all colors except blue.

Perennial Flower Guide:

Basically speaking, perennial flowers live more than one growing season, returning year after year. When perennials finish blooming, their foliage provides wonderful background texture, form, and color for your garden.

Perennial flowers may only bloom for a short spell and at certain times of the growing season. This makes it more difficult to plant a garden limited only to perennials and still achieve the desired effect of constant color. For this reason, mixing perennials with annual flowers is the key to a fabulous garden of continual color.

Let's look at some favorite perennial flowers that offer magnificent color and depth to any garden, and will grow just about anywhere:

Butterfly Weed -- Grows 1 to 3 feet. Flowers are bright orange (great for attracting butterflies!) with pretty pods covering the plant once the flowering ends. Blooms all summer.

Chrysanthemum or "Garden Mum" - Grows 1 to 4 feet. Flowers are all colors but blue. Blooms in the fall.

Daylily -- Grows 1 to 3 feet. Flowers are all colors except blue and white. Blooms from late spring to fall.

Felicia -- Grows 1 to 2 feet; Flowers are blue-petalled with yellow centers. Blooms from early summer to fall.

Hosta -- Grows up to 3 feet. Flowers are white, lavender or pale violet, often with colorful foliage. Blooms from summer to early fall.

Peony -- Grows 2 to 4 feet; Flowers are white, pink, maroon or red. Blooms from late spring to early summer.

Shasta Daisy - Grows 1 to 4 feet. Flowers have white petals usually with a yellow center. Blooms all summer.

With a little experience and planning, you can create a flower garden that blooms from one end to the other, from spring through fall. Bring together a few of these annual and perennial flowers for a wonderful mixed garden.

Learn as you go, make your own improvements... but most of all enjoy whatever time you do have in your garden. Soon you'll be writing your own flower guide inspired by your garden creations!

Copyright 2006 Robert Mosse <bio>Robert Mosse is a garden and lawn care specialist and author of the "Easy" Lawn and Gardening Book Series. Hence, they can survive with minimum or no maintenance at all.

Different varieties of wildflowers are present which thrive in different climates. Hence, you must firstly choose the wildflower variety which will survive in the type of soil present in your area. Secondly, it must also be able to adapt to the climatic conditions and seasonal variation in your area.

If you acquire any instructions or clarifications regarding when and how to plant your wildflowers plants, just visit a local nursery and inquire from the people there. This information can also be found on the internet. There are some websites on the internet relating to horticulture. All types of information regarding wildflower plants can be found on these websites easily.

The important pre-requisite for planting wildflower plants is that the soil where it will be planted must be made free from rocks and weeds. It must also be crushed into fine particles to allow penetration of nutrients. Any grass present on the ground must also be removed.

The land used for sowing wildflower seeds must be exposed to sunlight for a minimum of five to eight hours a day. The site must also have good drainage facilities. Since the wildflower seeds are sowed by scattering, the site should be nicely ploughed before sowing the seeds. Even coverage of the seeds throughout the site can be ensured by mixing the seeds with fine-grade builder's sand. These seeds will need constant watering until they grow to a minimum specified height.

Wildflower plants grow in regions were they can adapt to the climate and soil easily. However, there are certain varieties of wildflower plants which can grow well in any region or season. These can be obtained in both annual and perennial types. Mixing both will ensure that there is blossoming of plants throughout the year. Since these require comparatively lesser work input from your side, it will be a pleasure to just watch these flowers blossom. <bio>Lanny Hintz writes about http://www.flowergardennursery.com/Categories/Ground%20Covers.html, http://www.flowergardennursery.com/Coupons/BloomingBulb.com.html </bio>

When starting a flower garden, there are a few important things you need to know about how to care for the garden. For beginner gardeners, the most common mistake is not letting your plants get an adequate amount of natural light. Natural light whether they are partially or full is essential to ensure that the flora gets its nutrients on regular basis. Another important element for a healthy garden is water. Water as the liquid of life, however, anything beyond the needs of a garden will completely destroy it. Making sure the garden gets enough water and at the same time sustaining it is a daily challenge that a gardener has to face. Let it get rain water if you wish or you can even provide it for your flowers yourself. On top of these two essential components for gardening, fertilizing the soil is a must. Fertilized soil will boost your garden's vegetation nevertheless, too much of it will burn your plants.

Garden should be a place where one can picture heaven on earth, well if not they can relax and dream away in the lushness of its beautiful landscape. That is why a thriving garden would need all the nutrients and care it deserves. Water is on of them. Water and good drainage system goes hand in hand to provide the perfect amount of fluid the garden needs. Plants need the sun to produce chlorophyll, without it they will lack other things that they need to grow. Do not expect your garden to thrive if it doesn't get enough light it needs. Fertilizing your soil also means providing food to the garden. When it gets enough food it can live and work, so treat your garden like the way you would want to be treated!

Annuals and perennials can be mix in your planting project to get the best of both. Not only they provide assortment of flowers for your garden, they will make sure that there will always be something to see in your backyard. Of course for enthusiast gardener, this will keep you busy all through the year. If you find flowers that are drooping, pinch them off to let new flowers bloom. If you do not wish to use your hands, cut off the buds instead. This process is called deadheading.

Mixing different types of seeds in a garden can create a wonderful combination of flowers. There will be plants growing throughout the year. Perennial plants grow in early spring and this will be a sight for sore eyes. Adding annual seeds simultaneously will make sure more growth to come. Make the plants productive by cutting off old flowers. This is also called deadheading.

Insects can in fact help maintain a garden so that it becomes healthy and well balanced. Insects provide natural nutrients to the soil in the garden. It helps purge other predators of the plants. For this reason, a garden with bugs and insects has all the natural insects should do away with artificial insecticide as it can do more harm than good. Thus keeping the good insects for your garden would be a better option than artificial chemicals.

When you see bugs and insects in your garden, before you fret, you must be sure whether they are the ones you must rid off or keep. Although some insects may eat away your leaves and plants, some are there to help maintain your garden. They usually help pollinate flowers and keep nutrients in the earth. They can also act as natural predators to harmful bugs. This makes them good fertilizers and insecticide. Not only they are not harmful to your plants and environment, they come to you absolutely free.

One way to keep your garden attractive is using mulch to cover the soil. Other than that, mulch can also regulate optimal temperature for seeds to grow. Besides, mulch will not give room for weeds to grow. Another thing that a gardener might want to use in his garden is fertilizers. Fertilizers can maintain flowers blossoming for a longer period of time. When choosing fertilizer, one should opt for fluid type as the usage is easier to administer.

Soils need to be fertile in order for them to nourish seed and existing plants. When your soil is not naturally in this condition, you may need extra help from additional fertilizers. Liquid fertilizers are best because they not only let flowers bloom for longer period, they are also easiest to handle. Other than fertilizers, mulch will take care of soil during cold temperature. Therefore you can maintain the best temperature for your newly planted seeds. Adding mulch to soil should be done by at least 3 inches thick. <bio>Jeff is the founder and president of http://cheapseeds.com, a leading retailer of flower seeds, wild flower seeds, perennial seeds, annual flower seeds and much much more. </bio>

Many people think the orchid plant cannot be grown indoors. When grown in the wild, the orchid plant often forms a symbiotic relationship with other plants in order to get the nutrients that it needs. The orchid plant, like most other plants, must live in the proper conditions in order for it to bloom. The three major conditions that must be controlled in order for the orchid plant to bloom are water, light, and temperature. The orchid plant receives moisture through its roots like all other plants. Avoid planting the orchid in potting soil, because it does not like to be in standing water. The orchid thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. The orchid will continue to grow without this change, but it will not bloom.

Orchids can be a difficult flower to grow indoors because they are usually found growing in nature. As long as you are familiar with the living conditions that orchids need to grow, then you can grow orchids indoors. Orchids should be grown in a similar way. If wholesale orchids are left in standing water, they will eventually die. Wholesale orchids also need to have the temperature variations of the plants that are grown in the wild. The leaf color of wholesale orchids will indicate whether or not the orchid is getting the right amount of light. Yellowish color leaves mean the plant is getting too much light.

The orchid is a perennial plant that usually has three petals. There are about 30,000 different species of orchids wildly growing worldwide. There three basic types of orchid: epiphytic, terrestrial, and saprophytic. The first of the types of different orchids, the epiphytic orchid, grows mostly in tropic and subtopic regions. The epiphytic types of orchid are the most popular for growing indoors. The terrestrial orchid is the second of the major types of orchid. Many people who try to grow terrestrial orchids attempt to grow them in potting soil. The third of the types of orchid is saprophytic. The saprophytic orchid has underground roots just as the terrestrial orchid does. Some species of saprophytic orchids grow completely underground and never come above. If a person can understand how to grow other plants inside the home, then they can understand how to grow orchids. <bio>Jeffery Rush is a budding gardener with a passion for Orchids.
You may have chosen to install a pond in your backyard in order to grow water lilies and other aquatic plants. But even if you put in a pond to raise fish, or simply to enjoy the soothing sights and sounds of a water feature, plants are still an important part of a pond. They help to filter the water, and keep the water oxygenated, which will help fish to thrive. They also help to blend the pond into the landscape, and make it look more natural. A good selection of water lilies and other flowers will add a touch of color to your pond.

Several types of plants can be planted in and around your pond. A good combination of these plants will help to enhance the pond.

Bog plants and marginal plants are planted around the edges of the pond. The bog plants are placed in moist soil around the edge of the pond, and help to blend the pond in with the landscape. Marginal plants are planted in pots which are submerged in the shallow waters of the pond. The primary difference between a bog plant and a marginal plant is that the bog plants are not planted in the water, while marginal plants are.

Some plants will float on the surface of the pond. Plants such as water hyacinth and water lettuce float freely, with their roots hanging into the water below. Plants like water lilies are planted in pots submerged in the deep parts of the pond. The foliage and flowers float above, on the surface of the water. Both kinds of plants help to shade the water, and keep algae from forming. Water lilies also add a bright touch of color to your pond.

Underwater plants are plants that, as the name suggests, grow underwater. These submerged plants help to filter the water and keep it oxygenated for the fish. They also give the fish a place to hide from predators and from the bright sunlight. These plants also provide a source of food for fish.

Whatever your reasons for installing a pond in your backyard, plants are an important part of a complete water garden. They'll make it look a lot nicer, and help the pond's ecosystem to flourish. The proper plants will help to increase your enjoyment of your little backyard oasis. <bio>You can find more about water gardens and ponds at http://water-gardens-fountains.com </bio>

One of the most appealing things anyone will learn about herb gardening is how relaxing and simple growing herbs can be. Discovering all the wonderful, various herbs and what they do is a captivating pastime, and can be quite beneficial. You can use herbs for cooking, as medicinal aids such as topical dressings or healthy teas, or simply for decorative plants in the garden.

There are so many herb plants to choose from, it can be a bit daunting to the beginning herb gardener. A good source of information that you probably have is your cookbook, which often devotes a chapter or two to the uses of different herbs as flavorings and accents.

Planting a Basic Herb Garden

Get acquainted with herb gardening by growing herbs you think you'll use, plus throw in one or two that sound interesting to you. Herb gardens can range in size from small containers to vast outdoor gardens.

To best learn herb gardening, start simple with a small, sunny plot, or use a clay pot filled with potting soil.

The Two Big Needs that herbs have are:

- lots of sun, and

- well-drained soil.

Most herbs have a preference of full or partial sun, and the seed package or nursery will have this information clearly stated. Most herbs will not do well in very wet soil, and watering about every 2-3 days is usually sufficient. Raised garden beds are a good fit for herb gardens. They have excellent drainage and can be easily arranged for proper sunlight.

When planting herb seeds, cover them lightly with soil, and don't plant the seeds too deep. A good rule of thumb with herb gardening is andquot;the smaller the seed, the shallower you sow.andquot; If you are using young herb plants already started in growing trays, simply transplant them into your pots or garden bed. Sometimes the plants in the trays are dry; if so, water them first before planting them.

Finally, remember that annual herbs (herb plants which only grow for one season and then die) and perennial herbs (herb plants which will return the following year) do best when planted separately. This avoids disrupting the perennial plants' roots when it is time to dig out the dead annuals. It also prevents leaving dead root pieces behind which can contribute to fungus growth.

Grow Fresh Herbs for Cooking

Cooking with fresh herbs from your garden is a wonderful experience. To get started, here are gardening tips for two well-known herbs that are great for beginning herb gardeners.

Sweet Basil -- Sweet basil leaves are good in salads, and are a main flavoring ingredient in tomato dishes such as spaghetti and marinara sauce. In the northern climates, basil is usually grown as an annual plant. In milder climates, sweet basil will return each year on its own, and therefore is considered a perennial plant.

The sweet basil herb is a pleasure to grow because it thrives in average soil, and likes sun or partial shade. Sow the seeds after danger of frost is over, or start them indoors about eight weeks before growing season and then transplant them outside. You can also purchase ready-to-grow starter plants from nurseries and through catalogs.

It's easy to promote the bushiness of the basil plant leaves by pinching and clipping the herb throughout the summer. Use the leaves fresh during the summer growth months, and in the fall, dry the leaves and store them for use during the winter.

Garlic -- Garlic is full of minerals and nutrients, and is known to have great medicinal properties. It is a staple in every chef's kitchen for cooking dishes from chicken and pasta to seafood and vegetables. We've all seen garlic bulbs at the grocery store... but did you know that one simple garlic bulb has enough cloves to begin a garden full of garlic plants? Here's what you do:

When spring arrives and the weather has begun to turn warm, prepare a small garden bed in a sunny spot. Take the cloves and place them, pointy side up, in the soil. Plant them in clusters, or rows, and put a light layer of topsoil over them with some compost mixed in. When fall arrives, lift the garlic bulbs out of their bed.

Dry the garlic by slicing the bulbs into thin slices and placing them on a rack at room temperature. You can also store the bulbs by braiding the stalks and hanging the garlic in a dark, cool space. You may also freeze the entire garlic bulb!

Learn about herb gardening with these herbs, and then begin to branch out with more. In the meantime, you'll add wonderful flavors to your recipes, and mouthwatering aromas in the kitchen! <bio>Robert Mosse is a garden and lawn care specialist and author of the andquot;Easyandquot; Lawn and Gardening Book Series.
Everybody understands the reason why most plants can be seen in many aquariums. Healthy plants and their lush are beautiful to look at when they are in an aquarium. They also create a natural setting in the aquarium.

Most of the fishes feel secure, less stressed and safe whenever they have plants to hide in. Some species of fish do not survive in an aquarium without any plants.

Aquarium plants will not only give the fishes a helpful shelter and make your aquarium look attractive but they can maintain the quality of the water as well. Plants and fish both exist on the wild and they will surely match well in your aquarium.

The wastes discharged by the fish contain compounds that are useful for the plant's nutrition. Therefore, the organic wastes can be contained in the plants instead of seeing them float in the water. The plants must be pruned regularly and the dead parts must be eliminated from the aquarium ASAP.

Not only that, the aquarium plants will also provide a shelter to many micro organisms which are useful for the ecology and environment of the aquarium. In addition, plants have also the capacity to inhabit the growth of ugly algae since algae and plants compete for similar nutrients.

Most species of fish will never reproduce in an aquarium without plants. This is because some species need plants for them to feel secured enough to reproduce, while other species need the leaves of the plants to place their eggs in. An abundantly planted aquarium will also enhance the survival growth of the fry especially if you want to increase the number of fry in a similar aquarium like with the adult fish.

However, we all know that plants rely too much to light and photosynthesis. An aquarium with no plants will only need little. But if you are planning to have an abundant number of plants in your aquarium, you will be required to put new lights. A fluorescent light will be better to your planted aquarium, make sure that they are made especially for aquariums.

If you are a beginner, the plant species that will be suitable for you are the Java Moss and the Java Fern. These are strong plants that can survive in water hardiness and pH values. They can even be placed in a brackish aquarium like the Molly aquarium.

Aquarium plants are very important to the survival of most fishes in the aquarium. It does not matter what aquarium plant you choose, the important thing is you know how to maintain your aquarium as naturally as the fishes and plants habitat. <bio>This content is provided by Low Jeremy.
If one is aware of the ways of looking after his garden, a huge change can come over in the appearance and general well-being of his plants. If you follow the easy clues given below, you will have a blossoming, healthy garden.

Chief Attention Should Be Given To the Fundamentals

One's floral garden requires ample water, the light of the sun and rich, luxuriant earth. The well-being of plants will suffer much if they are devoid of these necessary requirements. A floral garden should be watered repeatedly throughout arid weather.

Bulbs should be planted at the right profundity. Do not amass earth or mulch about the stalk while planting out perennials and shrubs, for in that case, the water will draw off and not go inside, as it should. The stalk could decompose due to too much warmth.

Plant Perennials along with Annuals

Since they develop and blossom for many years, the bulbs of perennial plants do not require being planted again. On the other hand, annuals blossom and develop merely in their season. If you plant perennials with annuals, you may be sure of having flowers all the year round.

Deadheading Will Promote Number of Blooms

Deadheading is the process by which, the top of a flower is clipped, following its drooping. More flowers are generated due to this process. The plants will be stricken with maladies like mildew if the deadheads are thrown in the garden itself.

Differentiate between the Useful and the Harmful Insects

Usually, garden bugs are not harmful but useful. Insects like butterflies, bees and beetles are called pollinators. Pollen grains are transmitted from flower to flower by these insects, so that fertilization takes place. For existence, 80% of the plants with flowers depend upon bugs.

Lifeless plant substance is decayed by sow bugs, dung beetles, and microbes like bacteria, fungi and others. The earth becomes richer in this manner, so that developing plants can utilize a greater number of nutrients.

Bugs like aphis, responsible for genuine harm, are prey to normal predators such as lacewings and dragonflies.

Intermittent use of fluid fertilizers helps flowers to remain in bloom for a long period.

Remember to trim lifeless and injured twigs. Fuchsias, on being grazed, usually break. The wrecked twig is not useless.
