They are also known as legal assistants. They get qualified for the practice through formal education, paralegal training and experience. There are many paralegal schools that offer certificate courses and other research programs in paralegal studies.

A significant limitation of paralegal professionals is that they cannot give legal assistance to the consumers directly. All the legal services have to be regulated through the lawyers (attorney). Law offices, corporation and government agencies (entities that perform specific legal works) are some of the organizations that employ paralegals. A paralegal professional can practice law but not without a license. He or she cannot represent a client in the court, decide upon a fee or take on any case.

A paralegal professional should meet certain minimum qualifications in order to practice law under a lawyer.

and#61607; Completion of the Certified Legal Assistant certifying (CLA) examination held by the National Association of Legal Assistants and#61607; Completion of graduation from a course of study of legal assistants that is either ABA approved or institutionally accredited. and#61607; An in-house paralegal training for not less than six months is preferred. and#61607; It is mandatory to have at least three years of paralegal experience (law-related training) under the supervision of an attorney and#61607; You can have two years of in-house training as legal assistant as well.

Educational programs

Paralegal educational programs in the United States are on significant growth. There are estimated 600 paralegal education programs with a variety of formats and combinations (regarding course subjects and specializations). Several public and private institutions are offering paralegal education. Some of them include community colleges, four-year College and universities, Business College and other proprietary institutions. You can apply for the courses regardless of your educational background. The course structure are constructed in such a way that anyone can apply for the programs. The most common types of programs are:

and#61607; Associate degree programs. Two-year community colleges, four-year colleges, universities and business schools offer these programs. After completing 60-70 sessions, you can earn an associate degree. Half of the course constitutes paralegal course while other half deals with general education. The transfer facility of the courses is also available (do check about this before joining any institution).

and#61607; Bachelor degree programs. Various public and private institutions offers paralegal studies major, minor or concentration within a major. The length of these programs is about 120-130 sessions that includes 30-60 sessions in related topics. You will be awarded with a bachelor degree after completing the program.

and#61607; Paralegal certificate programs You can opt for certificate programs after you have successfully completed your bachelor program. You will earn a certificate after completing 18-60 sessions (various institutions have different structure).

and#61607; Master's degree programs. This program is an advanced degree in paralegal studies. The same colleges and universities that offer bachelor degrees have started offering masters degree. This is a specialized program that will enable you to learn paralegal studies in detail.

Apart from these, you have an opportunity to get paralegal training under any lawyer. However, if you are interested to go further into a research in paralegal studies then there are many specialized research institutes that offer such curriculum. <bio>Copyright 2006 Visit http://paralegal.atozlegal.net for additional paralegal training, paralegal certification and paralegal career resources, articles and news. </bio>

So, what's a lawyer got that a paralegal does not?

Well, there's that law degree diploma hanging on the wall. And that hefty fee that comes with an office visit.

While there are some limitations to what a paralegal can do, chances are that most of your attorney's work is done by a paralegal, a legal assistant that he or she trusts to know the law and the documents being prepared. Be thankful - the paralegal fee is far less than the fee would be if an attorney were completing your paper work. Don't worry that your legal work is less effective or efficient because it was completed by someone other than your actual attorney. When the attorney puts his or her signature on a document prepared by a paralegal, the lawyer is verifying that the information is correct. It's just as legal - but probably costing you a lot less - to have the paralegal complete your paper work.

There are a lot of duties a paralegal plays in an attorney's office. The paralegal may do legal research and writing for your attorney. A paralegal may even take over as case manager, a situation that many firms are considering if they have not already adopted to help keep legal fees lower and affordable.

There are five things a paralegal cannot do. One, a paralegal cannot give legal advice. Only a licensed attorney should do that. Two, a paralegal cannot develop the attorney-client relationship. It just makes sense - the attorney-client relationship should be between those two people, otherwise it would be called the law firm representative - client relationship. Three, the paralegal cannot sign papers on behalf of the client. Only the attorney can attest his or her name to those legal documents. Four, the paralegal cannot represent a client in court. While many paralegals could probably do so quite well, it just isn't legal. And, five, the paralegal cannot set and collect legal fees. Only the attorney can do that.

Different states have different requirements for paralegals. Some do specifically require certification. Other states allow attorneys hiring the paralegals to judge the person's qualifications. After all, the attorney will be the one signing off on all of the paralegal's work. Some attorneys require a certain amount of legal experience, a background in research or other clerical skills. If you are interested in a career as a paralegal, check with some attorney's offices or law firms in your hometown. See what their qualifications are. If they prefer to hire paralegals with course certificates, ask if they can recommend a school or schools for you to examine.

There are plenty of opportunities to take paralegal courses, even for today's busiest people. In addition to home study courses, there are online courses, and programs of study at two and four year colleges and universities. One method of study is sure to fit your budget and the school of your choice may even have financial aid options available. If you are thinking of a paralegal career - or changing careers to be a paralegal - check out all your options and decide if having a two or four year paralegal certificate will help make you more marketable in the legal world.

Tip - For options in finding the best lender for you, check out the links below. <bio>Visit http://www.totalparalegal.com | http://www.totalparalegal.com/sitemap1.html or http://www.totalparalegal.com/links.html for more information on a Paralegal Career. </bio>

A paralegal is an assistant to an attorney. This person participates in a number of activities that involve legal cases including researching case law, prepare pleadings, and assist in arguments. Becoming a paralegal is a highly lucrative position. Most paralegals work in law firms and are very well paid. It is also a great stepping stone if you are interested in becoming a lawyer. In order to be a paralegal, you must have an associated degree in paralegal studies. Online paralegal courses can help you attain that degree.

Many people who are already in the work force can not afford the time it takes to go to traditional colleges. Opting for online paralegal courses, though, will help resolve that problem by allowing you to work from the comfort of your own home and set your own schedule. This is a very convenient option for working parents or those who already have professional obligations. Anyone who has time restrictions will benefit from this.

Online paralegal courses will give a basis in understanding the law and the functions of a law office. Courses may include contract law, litigation, real estate law, research and criminal law. These courses will give the student the basis to be able to successfully work in and participate in a law firm or legal division within a company. Paralegals are highly valued employees who do a lot of the legal work in a case. With today's increasingly litigious society, the need for paralegals is on the rise. As cases increase, so does the need for attorneys and assistants. Paralegals earn on average, $40,000 per year and can increase with experience. Therefore, getting a paralegal degree is a valuable investment into your future.

Taking online paralegal courses does not need to be expensive. Generally, you only pay for the classes as you take them. Online paralegal courses are also less expensive than traditional courses because there is no need for a formal classroom setting or dedicated teacher with student to teacher ratio restrictions. The savings for this is passed through to the student. Also, because it is only necessary to have an associate's degree to become a paralegal, the degree can be obtained faster and cheaper than a bachelor's degree. If you still have budget concerns, most programs will offer financial aid. This can be in the form of student loans that do not have to be paid until the degree is completed or grants that never need to be paid off. Check with your school's financial assistance department for options.

The need for paralegals is on the rise. It is a great time to get into this field as there are many available jobs that pay well. The average salary of a paralegal is high and the additional earning potential is also high. It is estimated that this particular filed will grow at an above average rate over the next several years. Getting a degree will give you an advantage over the competition and help you land a very lucrative job. The convenience of online paralegal courses will help you attain your goal quickly and affordably.
Paralegal or Legal Assistant is an exciting profession in the Criminal Justice field. It is hard to imagine a law office without a paralegal. They can be described as the right hand of the lawyer. In this article I examine the role of the paralegal or legal assistant in the criminal justice field.

The legal assistant as the name suggests is there to assist the lawyer. It is vitally important to know that the paralegal cannot give legal advice or act as a lawyer. What the paralegal does must be under the supervision of a lawyer. The paralegal can do the following under the watchful eye of a lawyer:

1.The paralegal can conduct client interviews. They must identify themselves as paralegals to the client before starting the interview. In this instance, the legal assistant helps the lawyer ascertain the facts of a case by talking to the client. This saves the lawyer valuable time. The lawyer can use that time to work on strategies for the case.

2.The legal assistant can locate and interview witnesses. If you watched the movie Erin Brockovich, you saw Julia Roberts play the role of a paralegal that locates and interviews clients. In one of the scenes, she clearly states that she is not a lawyer. This underlines the point above that paralegals cannot give legal advice. It also underlines the point that they identify themselves as such.

3.Legal assistants can research and prepare legal documents. Paralegals do acquire the training and experience necessary to prepare legal documents. All the lawyer has to do is double check the work to make sure it meets the legal requirements that such document requires. Again, I don't have to tell what a valuable timesaver this is to a lawyer.

4.The paralegal can attend court trials. In this case, they help the lawyer with the case files. This way the lawyer is not fumbling in court looking for files or evidence. The paralegal is there to keep him or her organized.

I can write more volume on the role of the legal assistant or paralegal in the criminal justice field, but you get the point. It is indeed an exciting profession. Think of all the intriguing things that can be involved in a legal case. As a paralegal, you can be in the middle of it all.

Note: You are free to reprint or republish this article.
Paralegal Schools offer many options to help you get formally trained as a professional paralegal.

Typically a paralegal school will offer an Associate's Degree Program or a Certificate Program. Also you may find some paralegal schools that offer a Bachelor Degree or a Master Degree.

The Associate's Degree will take around 2 years of study, the Certificate will only need a few months, while the Bachelor's or Master's degrees will require 4 years.

As a whole the job market now require some shape of formal training and diploma. Gone are the days where only some typing skills and a clean pair of shoes assured you a job.

In order to qualify for a Paralegal Certificate you need an Associate or a Bachelor's degree, but some schools require only a high school diploma or a GED.

Also you may want to consider online paralegal schools. The online courses offer many advantages like schedule flexibility and reduced costs. Each course completed is credited towards the degree. A great advantage of online schools is that many will let you pay each course individually...

You may have already discovered that paralegal schools and online paralegal schools are very abundant to say the least. So I recommend that you take a special approach to select your own school and training. If you plan to study in a formal classroom versus an online paralegal school then obviously the physical location of the schools will help narrow the search, because you may prefer an institution that is close to your home. This step being taken I recommend that you analyze the current job market listings and that you note the training requirements for paralegal or legal assistants hiring. This will greatly help you select the amongst the school offerings and will almost guarantee you a strong position on your future job market.

Many job listings will ask for a Bachelor's Degree and/or a Certificate and specialized experience and many Junior Paralegal jobs will require training and some general experience.

Note that most paralegal schools will help you get the required base of experience thru internships or externships with various field experience and hands-on training. Also in the case of a career change, a good portion of your actual experience may apply to one of the many specializations of this field. In most cases only a couple years of related experience will be required.

So if you plan a career change or if you want to qualify for an interesting career you may find that Paralegal Schools are the fast track to a really decent salary (40K to over 100K is the norm) and some neat extras like bonuses and a fair amount of independence on the job. <bio>Peter St-Germain offers you tips and articles about paralegal schools.
The paralegal profession is currently experiencing a great deal of growth and prosperity. With the average USA annual salary averaging around $34,000 for local and state work, nearly double that for Federal Government work, and much more in the private sector, it's no wonder this career field is growing. Let's take a look at just a few reasons why a career as a paralegal is so rewarding.

Challenging Work

Attorneys pass much of their workload along to paralegals, also known as legal assistants. However, paralegals may not perform all of an attorney tasks, these tasks include setting legal fees, giving out legal advice, and presenting court cases. But they may play a role in virtually everything else.

Case preparation is part of a paralegals workload. Paralegals often help lawyers with background information and research, legal history, case studies, fact-finding investigations, document preparation and analysis, plea documents, folder, record and file handling. The work they perform is often involved with hearings, trials, closing comments, and corporate functions.

Jobs are available for paralegals in many types of companies and organizations. They work with employee benefits, labor law, criminal law, corporate law, government (at all levels), real estate and bankruptcy. And you'll find them working in personal injury law and litigation as well.

Career Tidbits

The following list includes a few pieces of interesting information concerning paralegals:

- Paralegals usually work year round, although temporary paralegal work is available. Although 40 hours is average, heavy workloads are a possibility. Work isn't always at the office; paralegals need to work in libraries and often travel in order to gather relevant information.

- In 2004, there were 224,000 paralegal jobs, with private practices employing roughly 7 out of 10 of them.

- Job opportunities for paralegals are expected to climb at a faster than average rate through the year 2014.

There's no better time to check into being a paralegal than now! <bio>Copyright © 2006.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for paralegals is very good, with an expected growth rate near 33 percent a year through 2010. The bureau notes that compared to other professions, the leap in the paralegal field is dramatic.

The paralegal or legal assistant profession is expected to grow because of a couple of economic factors. One, more law firms are hiring paralegals to do some of the necessary legwork - research and paper work on their behalf. This frees up the attorney for court appearances and for developing client-attorney relationships, two duties a paralegal is not allowed to do. Two, having a paralegal do the work rather than an expensive paid by the hour attorney saves the client money.

Law firms are not the only agencies that hire paralegals or legal assistants. Many corporations, businesses and non profit agencies have also seen the benefit of having a paralegal on staff. If you are considering a career as a legal assistant, keep that in mind and do not narrow your job search only to law firms or private attorneys - unless, of course, your passion is to work for a law office or directly for an attorney.

While the paralegal job market looks great, competition to participate in the paralegal field will be increasingly stiff. With competition growing, the best way to make yourself marketable in the field is to get all the training you possibly can. Once upon a time, legal assistants were trained on the job. There was not professional training other than clerical training that would prepare a person for a career as a paralegal. Many of those paralegals are retiring these days, having been hired in the 1960s or 1970s when the paralegal field really began. Now, the lawyers and firms they have been working for over the last 20 some odd years want their replacements to be trained and ready to work.

Getting training for a career as a legal assistant is convenient, even for those people who have other jobs who want to train in their spare time for a paralegal career. Many community colleges offer paralegal training certification in two year study programs. Some colleges and universities offer paralegal training as part of a four year course of study. Even more opportunities exist online and through correspondence courses. Research all your options and weed out the ones that just don't make sense for you. When you take time to look at all the training possibilities available, you will see that there is course work available to fit your time and budget constraints.

Of course, even with training and certification as a paralegal, you will still have to get in sync with your boss, whether working for an individual attorney, a firm, or as a paralegal in the business sector. Getting to know the expectations of your job and your role as a paralegal in the office in which you work will also play a factor in your success in your career as a legal assistant. <bio>Visit http://www.totalparalegal.com | http://www.totalparalegal.com/sitemap1.html or http://www.totalparalegal.com/links.html for more information on a Paralegal Career. </bio>

If watching TV shows like Law and Order or old Ally McBeal re-runs has you thinking you would love a career as a legal assistant, you may want to look into the real world of one before entering the paralegal job market.

Working as a paralegal can be interesting and very rewarding work, but no one should enter the field with delusions of becoming an Erin Brockovitch. Here are some of the qualities a good paralegal should have:

1. You must love research. Not only must you love it, you should be the kind of thinker who can find innovative ways to find facts as you research cases. Maybe your research will require surfing the Internet for days on end, or you may find yourself neck deep in old files at the county courthouse. You may even find yourself searching through old newspaper articles. If you do not like research, find a different career choice.

2. You must be organized. As a paralegal, you are not only organizing cases and files for yourself; you are also organizing them for use by attorneys and other case workers. Having your own system of filing will not work for a successful paralegal. Your organization must be logical and easy for others to follow. Remember, all the research you do could either make or break the client's case.

3. You must work well with limited supervision. If you require a boss standing over your shoulder reminding you that your work is due soon, don't consider a career as a paralegal. For one, the attorney or business person you work for will not have time to be your deadline reminder. And, don't expect that just because your boss says you have two weeks to complete a case file that he or she won't say they absolutely need it two days later.

4. You must work well under pressure. As you gather research about a case, little facts could pop up that change the entire course of your research. If you get frustrated easily, being a paralegal might not be the career choice you should make. An adaptable person succeeds as a legal assistant.

5. You must have good people skills. Just because your job might mean doing a lot of research doesn't mean you won't have vital contact with clients. As a paralegal, you may take statements from clients and help direct their questions and concerns to the attorney. You are their liaison with the lawyer. It's important that you like to help people and can work with a diverse group of people if you work as a legal assistant.

If you have the above qualities, you would probably make a great paralegal. If you have those five qualities, plus having training or certification as a legal assistant, the world will be your oyster. The training will set you apart from all the other people who also have the same qualities. Twenty and 30 years ago, no one had formal training as a legal assistant. All those paralegals are preparing for retirement now and their employers will plan to replace them with a trained professional instead of offering on the job training again. <bio>Scott Knutson is an entrepreneur and writer.
Believe it or not, a paralegal (or legal assistant) is not a licensed profession in the United States. While some paralegals originally received on the job training when the profession came into existence in the 1960s and 1970s, more people entering the field today do so with certification. Certification is voluntary, not a requirement to be a paralegal. However, a paralegal with certification and special training is generally better prepared for promotion and will stand out in a field of candidates who might likely meet most qualifications but who are not certified.

To get certified as a paralegal or legal assistant (the terms are used interchangeably), one must pass a test from one of several paralegal organizations. Certification for paralegals is a little like that of attorneys. Just because an attorney passes law school doesn't make him or her a lawyer. They must first pass the bar exam. The same situation is true for paralegals. Completion of a certification program does not make one a certified paralegal. It's passing the exit exam that issues that certification.

In addition to entering the field as a certified paralegal, most of today's legal assistant professionals choose to continue their education as an on going process. Some want to specifically develop certain areas of their work -- like receiving additional training in commercial law, criminal law, estate planning, etc.

When you are searching for a certificate program to either begin or continue education in the paralegal field, you will have to weed out those programs that are not right for you. There are quite a few programs out there. Some say they are approved by or compliant with the American Bar Association. The best way to check is to contact the bar association in your state. Tell the bar association representative that you are seeking information about either entering the field or continuing professional development certification and ask for program referrals. While most states do not require certification for people to be a paralegal, the state's bar association will be able to hook you up with some of the organizations and programs they do recognize as reputable.

If you are looking into various online certification courses or correspondence courses, check with your state's attorney general's office and better business bureau to see if any complaints have been filed about the institution offering the courses. The state's bar association would be another good source of information as well.

While selecting your choice of study for paralegal certification may take some legwork initially, it will pay off for you in the future. Besides, the research you do as you search for certification information will better prepare you for the types of research you may end up performing as a legal assistant. Additionally, it may save you a lot of expense and heart ache in the future. Nothing would be worse than "completing" a paralegal training program only to find out that its certification is not recognized widely and after the expense and time, you basically have nothing to show.

This article may be reproduced only in its entirety. <bio>Scott Knutson is an entrepreneur and writer.
When creating a resume, one of the most important aspects is the resume objective.
When creating a resume, one of the most important aspects is the resume objective. Employers get hundreds of resumes whenever they place an add for a job and unless you put down your employment objective in your resume, the document that you worked so hard to produce may end up by the wayside.

There are many different sample resume objective forms that you can use,. The resume objective is simply what you wish to accomplish by sending the company your resume. In most cases, the objective is to get a certain job. This should be clearly stated on your resume.

A sample resume objective for someone who wishes to become a paralegal, for example, can include a heading stating Employment Objective and under this heading should be the type of paralegal position which you are seeking. If you are seeking to be a commercial real estate paralegal, for example, this should be stated at this point.

Another sample resume objective would be for someone who is seeking a position as receptionist. Again, the Employment Objective would be listed as receptionist.

Suppose, however, that the person who seeks to be a receptionist is also going to school for a paralegal degree. He or she may be qualified now to be a receptionist, but upon completion of their studies, will want to seek employment as a paralegal. If this person is applying for a job at a law office, in addition to the sample resume objective there should also be a career objective stated. This could read something like this:

Although I am seeking the position of receptionist, I am currently enrolled in xxx college and expect to complete my paralegal studies in xxx. My career objective is to become a paralegal.

This will let the prospective employer know that in addition to getting a receptionist, he or she may also be able to get a qualified paralegal who will have knowledge of the law firm and can remain in the employ of the law firm for years to come. This may make the candidate a bit more desirable as it costs employers thousands of dollars to train new employees.

A good sample resume objective can be found within many different software programs that assist someone in creating a resume. The wording is all there, you just need to fill in the proper information. It is essential, however, that you put down an objective in your resume. It not only denotes professionalism, but lessens the confusion on the behalf of the employer.

Employment objectives and career objectives are two different headings on most resumes. An employment objective refers to the job for which one is immediately applying., A person just out of law school may apply for a job as an associate in a law firm. This is an employment objective. A career objective for the same person, however, would probably be partner in the law firm.

Many people are hesitant about putting down career objectives on their resumes. It makes them feel foolish as if they are shooting for the stars. Nothing can be further from the truth. Most employees want to hire people with some sort of ambition. It is not foolish to say that you want to be partner of a law firm when you are an attorney, it is more foolish to say that you are content with staying an associate and never moving up the ladder.

It is important, therefore, to put employment objectives as well as career objectives, where appropriate, on your resume. If you are going to school to become a nurse and have applied for a job as a secretary, it is not necessary to put your nursing career objective on your resume as this may cost you the job. A career objective should only be included on a resume if it adds to the employment opportunity which you are seeking.

To find a good sample resume objective, take a look at some of the resume building tools online or in some resume building software. All of the information that you need to find a good sample resume objective can be right at your fingertips. Remember to be honest in what you are hoping to achieve. You do not have to get too wordy, either. A good sample resume objective can be as simple as saying that you want to be a receptionist. <bio>Mario Churchill is a freelance author and has written over 200 articles on various subjects.
The paralegal profession began back in the 60's and 70's. Attorneys began hiring assistants to help them with general duties, case investigation and paper work. This trend was noticed by the American Bar Association and it resulted in the formation of the Standing Committee on Legal Assistance which was established to setup standards in the paralegal / attorney relationship. It included duties associated with a paralegal and employment guidelines. Today, the committee consists of both professional paralegals and lawyers.

The American Bar Association offers a certification training program to schools that offer paralegal certification and training. This helps to establish educational and training standards throughout the industry which helps to ensure training uniformity.

In addition to the American Bar Association, there are a number of national organizations for paralegals that have also contributed to the refining of the paralegal / legal assistant profession.

Two of these professional organizations are the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) and the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). Together they represent about 30,000 paralegals in the United States. While these organizations are competitors, they have come together to help shape and serve the paralegal field. NALA prefers to call individuals in the profession legal assistants while NFPA prefers to call them paralegals.

Another organization, which consists of paralegal educational programs and teachers, is called The American Association for Paralegal Education or AAfPE. Consistent paralegal educational standards are one of their key points of interest.

Another professional organization for paralegals, which primarily serves individuals, was created in 2003 and is called The American Alliance of Paralegals. It quickly began setting standards in the paralegal field and paralegals are required to meet particular work experience and / or educational guidelines in order to be a voting member. It was also the first national organization for paralegals to become involved in setting minimum educational guidelines and standards.

You may want to check with other paralegals in your area to see what they have to say about the professional memberships available in any of these organizations in your area. You may also want to inquire about other benefits of becoming a member and what type of professional development training each organization offers.

If you are considering a paralegal career or you have just begun your paralegal training, you may want to consider adding a membership card to one or more of the professional paralegal organizations in your area.

It's both common sense and good business sense to contact every paralegal organization you can find. Professional paralegal organizations that offer networking or job opportunity boards are clearly a great benefit to anyone but they can be essential to those who are just beginning their careers. These organizations can also expose you to many opportunities you may otherwise not have been exposed too like: scholarship offers or financial programs that could help you complete your training.

If you've been sitting back and waiting to take that next step in your life and your career and the allure of a paralegal career is calling you... then you must check out the links below. <bio>Visit http://www.totalparalegal.com or http://www.totalparalegal.com/sitemap1.html or http://www.totalparalegal.com/links.html for more information on a Paralegal Career. </bio>

Paralegals and Legal Assistants (the terms are interchangeable) back in 60's and 70's received much of their training on the job via real world experience. However, since that time things have changed and now most paralegals enter the field by going through the certification process. Although certification is not required to get a job, in fact it's still not a licensed profession, a paralegal that's been certified is generally considered to be a better trained, more qualified candidate than a paralegal that hasn't been certified.

The certification process for paralegals is a bit like becoming an attorney; it requires an individual to pass a test from a qualified paralegal organization. Just like gradating from law school doesn't make someone a lawyer - they must first pass the bar exam, and with paralegals, completing a certified training program doesn't make them a certified paralegal; they must first pass the exam in order to earn certification.

Even after certification many paralegals choose to continue their training by specializing in particular niches of the law like: estate planning, criminal law, commercial law and so on.

There is a wide array of certification programs out there so when searching for the best program for you to either further your education and training or to begin your paralegal career, you will have to spend a little time and weed out those programs that don't fit your situation.

Some organizations claim that they've been approved or that they are compliant with the American Bar Association but the only way to verify their claims is to check with your state bar association.

Explain to your state bar association representative that you are looking for reliable information about either entering the paralegal field or that you are seeking continuing educational training. While most states don't require paralegal certification, your states bar association should be able to connect you with the top certification and training organizations and programs in your area that they feel are reputable.

You can check with your states better business bureau or attorney generals office if you are looking into online certification or correspondence courses, to see if any complaints have been filed about the companies offering the courses.

Although, the paralegal certification selection process will take a bit of time and research, a positive off-shoot of the whole thing is that it will probably pay off down the road by helping to ensure that you find the best possible certification training available in your area or online. It should also help you avoid the time, expense and frustration of choosing the wrong training program; perhaps one that isn't recognized and then having to deal with the realization that you having nothing to show for your efforts.

In addition, the whole research process will prepare you for the type of research you will be required to do as a certified paralegal.

If the allure of a paralegal career is calling you, check out the links below. <bio>Visit http://www.totalparalegal.com or http://www.totalparalegal.com/sitemap1.html or http://www.totalparalegal.com/links.html for more information on a Paralegal Career. </bio>

The career field of paralegals began developing in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s as lawyers began hiring the assistants to help them with paper work, case investigation and general duties. As more attorneys began hiring legal assistance, the American Bar Association formed the Standing Committee on Legal Assistance to help set the standard in the paralegal - attorney relationship, employment guidelines and other duties associated with the paralegal, or legal assistant. That committee was formed in the late 1960s and today is made up of both attorneys and professional paralegals. The American Bar Association offers a certification program to institutions that give courses in paralegal instruction which gives the bar association the opportunity to set standards in the education of legal assistants.

There are several major national professional organizations for paralegals in the United States, in addition to their representation in the American Bar Association. Some of those organizations have helped form the career field of the paralegal, or legal assistant.

Two professional organizations, the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) and the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA), together represent more than 30,000 paralegals across the U.S. The organizations, while both working to serve the paralegal profession, have been competitive while determining the language that helps shape the profession. The NFPA prefers usage of the word paralegal while NALA prefers the term legal assistant.

The American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE) is an organization of institutions and teachers of paralegal education programs. The organization strives for consistent paralegal education standards.

A new organization for paralegals began in 2003 and quickly began setting standards in the legal assistant field. The American Alliance of Paralegals serves individuals. Members in the American Alliance of Paralegals are required to meet certain educational or work experience guidelines in order to be a voting member. The organization was the first national organization for paralegals to become involved in setting minimum educational standards and guidelines.

If you are a paralegal hoping to gain membership in a national professional organization, do some research to see what type of associations are typical to your area. The national organizations will likely have state and regional groups meeting in your area, or a nearby area. Talk to other paralegals in your area to see if they have professional membership in one of these organizations. Ask about benefits and professional development training the organizations offer.

If you are just entering a career as a paralegal or just beginning training for such a career, see if a professional membership can help you in your career plans. Perhaps an organization that offers various networking or job notice work boards would be of benefit to someone seeking to enter the field. Membership could be like having an insider pulling for you. Also, if you are a student planning to enter the paralegal field, a national organization might be able to hook you up with scholarship or other financial award information to help you complete your training. Contact all the paralegal organizations you can find to see if they have special information that might help you along your path to your legal career.

This article may be reproduced only in its entirety. <bio>Scott Knutson is an entrepreneur and writer.
The paralegal (also known as legal assistant) profession is one of the fastest growing professions at this moment. In the past several years, it has become a profession that requires higher education levels than ever before due to the onslaught of new technologies.

By having a legal assistant prepare first drafts and do the research pertaining to a case, the lawyer can charge much less than if they had to do the work themselves. A paralegal will perform many of the important tasks that pertain to a legal case.

They investigate the facts, gather all pertinent information, identify appropriate laws, and review past case law and judicial judgments. They will prepare documents to initiate a legal case, write letters to clients, request documentation from relevant sources, as well as write up reports that the lawyer may use to determine how the case should be handled.

But make no mistake about it, there are cons to the paralegal profession. The following are the most common:

1. A legal assistant could be required to work long hours, often beyond your normal nine to five job.

2. A paralegal will perform lots of research and spend lots of time writing up their findings.

3. The legal assistant profession at this time has no regulations or certifications by law to monitor their actions.

With regards to certification, one can choose to become certified voluntarily. It is a good idea to get paralegal certification because it shows that you are a qualified professional to prospective employers. You can get the Certified Legal Assistant Certification (CLA) through the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) or take the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE) offered by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA).

Even with the cons associated with the paralegal profession, there are many pros as well.
The following are the most common:

1. The legal assistant field offers numerous challenges and can be very rewarding.

2. The average salary for a legal assistant can range from $25,000 to $55,000, depending on location, education, and type of agency that a paralegal is employed.

3. A legal assistant can be employed by a governmental department, private practice, a large law firm, a corporation, or any number of places that require the services of an attorney.

Today the paralegals career prospects and opportunities have never been so superior. However, nowadays the paralegal needs to be trained in a variety of specific areas. A legal assistant that holds an Associate's or Bachelor's degree is in a more advantageous position to be employed by a governmental agency or a larger more prestigious firm than a person that does not hold one or the other of these degrees. A legal assistant that has their degree can also demand a better salary.

Becoming a legal assistant can offer the exciting challenges that you may be seeking in your career. Paralegals earn excellent earnings and it is a fantastic career for those that are concerned with aiding someone in need.

It is definitely a career worth looking into. They also maintain cases and review files and even help with obtaining clients.

Becoming a Paralegal takes a two year degree but its well worth the time spent. You will be a valuable commodity to the legal profession.

What does it take to become a Paralegal?

An education is the most important thing to have. It sets you apart from office clerks and other co-workers. The best way to obtain a Paralegal degree or certificate is to check out online colleges. It's best to look for an accredited school; it will be the difference between you and the other person applying.

It helps to attend a college that is recognized by the legal community. This way, when you approach a potential employer, they will see that the students who graduate from that particular school have the keys necessary to become valuable assets to any law firm.

What does it take to get a Paralegal job?

It takes referrals. Most of the time you spend in school will be with those who are obtaining their Paralegal degree or certificate. They may know somebody in the legal field or they may even be working at a law firm.

It is best to make friends with everybody so you can all network with each other. It will give you a chance to know what some firms pay, what the work environment is like and what is to be expected.

Another factor in getting a Paralegal job is to realize you will have to start at the bottom. Many people think they will come out of school making $40,000; it could happen, but it takes experience.

There is most likely a job board at your college that is reserved just for Paralegals. Law firms will post paying positions, so you'll be able to see what jobs are available. It is best to let a law firm know when you graduate so they can be expecting a call back.

Your professors may also know of available positions within the legal community. Some of them don't often give recommendations but if you are an excellent student, it never hurts to ask. You may even be able to work for the school you just graduated from.

You've got the job, now what?

Most Paralegals obtain their job and start working their way up. Some positions call for Senior Paralegals, those are Para-professionals that have more experience. Sometimes it takes five or even ten years experience to get there. They are usually team leaders and attend firm meetings or they might even be recruiters within the firm.

The most important thing to remember is your position; you'll be working right along side the attorneys. They will depend on you for important documents, and your professionalism should always be on display.

A Paralegal degree can open doors to corporate careers, hospital careers, and it could be a stepping stone to law school if you plan to attend. If this sounds exciting to you, then explore the possibilities further. You can do this by visiting websites which cover the career in more detail.

Note: You are free to reprint or republish this article.
As job opportunities in many professions continue to be downsized and outsourced in the new global economy, the paralegal field has continued to grow in stature and importance along with the job opportunities.

Sounds great for anyone who's interested in a career as a paralegal but regardless of the opportunities if you're not cut out for the work, it's of little importance. As a result, if you've been contemplating a paralegal career you may want to ask yourself if you've got what it takes to be a top notch paralegal.

To help you along in your self evaluation I've listed some of the top characteristics you'll need to excel in this challenging, rewarding and in demand profession.

People Skills

In today's workplace, most professions require the ability to work well with others and working as a paralegal is no different. Although research is a big part of the job and I'll go into that aspect of the job next, you will also be required to work with a wide variety of people. As a paralegal you are the liaison between the client and the lawyer for many duties. For instance, you may be asked to take statements from clients and then assist in directing their concerns and questions to the lawyer.

Research, Research, Research

The bottom line with research is that if you don't like it, you should run away from this career as fast as you can. You must love and excel at research if you want succeed as a paralegal. In addition, you need to be the kind of individual who can think outside the box in order to find the hidden facts that will help the cases you are assigned to research. Today, much of your research can be done online via the internet but good old fashioned research at the county courthouse or scrolling through old newspapers on microfiche down at the public library.

Self Starter

Are you a self starter with the ability to work at a high level with limited supervision? If you are the type of person who requires a boss standing over your shoulder "cracking the whip" pushing you to get busy and meet deadlines you may want to reconsider becoming a paralegal. Most attorneys and other business owners you may be working for simply do not have the time to be following the progress of your work on an ongoing basis. They will give you a task and then expect you to meet your deadline.

Pressure and More Pressure

All jobs have pressure but some pressure is more real because it's backed by a real world deadline that doesn't move and must be met. The type of work paralegals do usually falls into the category of work that needs to be completed on time because there's a deadline to meet. On that note, you need to be aware that as you are doing research and gathering information, facts may pop up on occasion that change the entire course of your research and then you may be forced to start anew, from a completely new angle. Therefore, you must have the ability to handle deadlines, adapt on a moments notice and be able to handle it all without getting frustrated or you'll burn out.

Organization

Because all the research you do can either make or break a case you must be able to organize all that information into a usable, user friendly format that anyone and can use and understand. This is vital because you'll be required to present your research to lawyers or case workers or to whomever and if they are confused the consequences could be disastrous.

That's it - arguably the top five qualities any highly skilled, competent paralegal needs to survive and thrive. Do you have what it takes? Be honest and if you do - congratulations, because with the right training your future should be bright.

If the allure of a paralegal career is calling you, check out the links below. <bio>Visit http://www.totalparalegal.com or http://www.totalparalegal.com/sitemap1.html or http://www.totalparalegal.com/links.html for more information. </bio>

Online degree programs are like the new technical school. They prepare busy people for the rigors of the work place and provide the knowledge necessary for getting a much better job. Specifically, they offer opportunities in new and budding industries where people have a chance to have a great, long career. Most online universities make their living from working professionals in business who want to gain a degree in order to move up in the corporate world. One different type of degree is gaining popularity, though. The online paralegal degree is one that is relatively painless and affords students an opportunity to work in the legal field. Specifically, this degree is aimed at a person who wants to get there quickly.

The best reason for getting an online paralegal degree is because it will give you an opportunity to jump into a lucrative field. With one of these degrees, you can work immediately as a paralegal or a legal assistant for a big firm or a small firm. With that position, you stand to make a good salary with an opportunity for advancement.

Online paralegal degree programs offer the convenience of quickness, as well. Most online paralegal programs can be completed in around one year, meaning that students can enjoy the fruits of their education much quicker than in the past. These universities have degree programs that will immediately prepare students for the rigors of the legal field. In the program, you will learn the skills of the job and the knowledge to do it right. You will also gain a bit of insight on the work ethic and other responsibilities that are essential to success. By choosing an online paralegal degree program instead of a traditional university, one can gain the skills and expertise to succeed at the job, while skipping the unnecessary courses usually assigned by a traditional program. This degree enables graduates to have a very high job placement when they complete the program.

Another extremely valuable component of this degree program is that it will equip you with a bachelor degree that can lead to many other opportunities. Should you enjoy the legal field after working in it, this degree will give you an opportunity to pursue post-graduate work that will make you even more marketable to big companies. In general, this online paralegal degree is simply a stepping stone to much greater things. While it requires only a year to complete, it affords a lifetime of better living.

Many online universities offer paralegal students the option of combining their degree with another program within the university. Many take advantage of the chance to combine their paralegal degree with something in business. A popular program is the applied management degree program in association with the paralegal training. This specific combination of learning will enable workers to work well with attorneys who work on business law and contract litigation. By gaining even more specialization in a field, workers make themselves doubly marketable to potential employers. With this knowledge, there is a good chance that you can do something that your competitor for a position is unable to do.

Online paralegal degree programs afford students with an opportunity to succeed in a very short period of time. Anyone who has a strong desire to work within the legal field and can put up with about a year's worth of online classes should consider this challenging and exciting career. This small sacrifice can go a long way to establishing a worker in a growing and very competitive industry. <bio>Andy West is a freelance writer for Virginia College.
Online education is rapidly developing. More than ever before, people are earning degrees from the comfort of their home or office. The benefits far outweigh the challenges and costs. Several types of degrees are available online. Those who want a career in law are now turning to online education. An online paralegal degree is one type of degree that is currently available. If you want to enter the legal field, you need to consider this form of education.

The field of law could not function without the assistance of paralegals. They are found in courtrooms, insurance companies, governmental offices, and attorneys' offices. An online paralegal degree allows you to enter a career that offers prestige and a bright future. You also gain an opportunity to affect the lives of others in a positive way.

Each year more lawyers join the workforce. More organizations witness firsthand the benefits of having skilled paralegals on staff. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2006-07 Occupational Outlook Handbook, the employment of paralegals is projected to grow much faster than average. Employers are trying to reduce costs by hiring paralegals to perform the tasks that are usually carried out by lawyers.

Instructors with real-world experience teach classes. Now is the best time to move toward an exciting new career. There is no longer a need to sacrifice commitments to work, family, or service to your country. Getting your online paralegal degree means that you can complete the program in an andquot;anytime, anywhereandquot; format. This will fit into your busy schedule.

Before you begin working on an online paralegal degree, however, ask yourself if you have what it takes to undergo online learning. You have heard a lot about online learning, but you still may not be sure if it is the right path for you. The positives are that it is convenient, it offers a quality learning experience, and it is often affordable. The negative is that you will not have the benefit of direct contact with your teacher or with classmates. Nothing can substitute for an authentic classroom environment.

If you believe that you will succeed in a very self-directed environment, you are ready to participate in a course that offers an online paralegal degree. If you know that you will complete assignments as they fit into your weekly schedule, you should pursue this type of education. You will benefit by learning at a pace that works best for you. Remember, though, that regardless of whether you are ahead or behind anyone else in your class, you need to finish assignments within the instructor's timeframe.

You must have strong communication and writing skills if you are going to pursue an online paralegal degree. All of your communication in the course is in written form. You need to feel comfortable getting online and expressing your thoughts using the written word. Make sure that you know your current level of writing and communication skills.

These are some things to consider when thinking of obtaining an online paralegal degree. Even if you did not respond positively to every question, you should still look into this form of education. You will find a number of things to do that will sufficiently prepare you if you feel that online learning is your path to success in the legal field. <bio>Andy West is a freelance writer for Virginia College.
