Questionnaires were mailed to the women in the study. The women were asked where they lived and if they had conditions that put them at risk for any other diseases. Waist and hip, height, weight, and blood pressure measurements were taken at the beginning of the study. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol were also reported if these conditions were diagnosed by a doctor. The questionnaire asked about how much each woman exercised and how much they ate.

The questionnaire also contained questions about how much alcohol the women drank, how often they drank, and what they drank, both currently and in the past. The researchers sent out two follow-up questionnaires every 3 to 5 years. These questionnaires asked the women whether they developed type 2 diabetes, what year they were diagnosed, who diagnosed them, and whether they were being treated by diet, drugs, and/or insulin.

Conclusion The researchers found that blood pressure was lower in the women who drank moderately, but it increased in women who drank more. During the study, a total of 760 new cases of diabetes were diagnosed. The research shows, however, that drinking alcohol in moderate amounts did lessen the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, I'm not sure she's a great role model for older women. This is why: Judge Judy was sharing her wisdom on the , and the conversation turned to computers. Judy and Larry admitted they had never used a computer, and that's okay. When you have people who can do what you don't want to do or can't do =96 that's fine.

But here's the thing. Judy implied that she was too old to learn. She didn't say so in so many words, but that was her message, loud and clear. It should not have surprised me =96 on her show, she often makes comments about "getting old" or "being old." As smart as she is, she seems not to understand that you are what you say you are. Chronological "old" is one thing. Mental "old" is something else. You can't control the former but you are in full control of the latter as long as you have your wits about you.

Here's what really bothers me: Her comment about age being a deterrent to learning new information compounds the widely held myth that old (or older) people can't learn new things. Judge Judy is an extremely influential woman =96 we listen to her and accept her wisdom. While she was speaking I could just picture older women who have given up on themselves, silently assenting that they too are too old to learn to use a computer, thankful to Judge Judy that she has given them permission to continue to vegetate.

She often chastises on her show, suggesting that they need an "epiphany." An epiphany, according the dictionary is a , "a sudden intuitive , especially through an ordinary but striking occurrence."

Judge Judy is not old, but her comments and demeanor make one think that she's older than her reputed 56 years. She needs an epiphany. Not just for herself, but for the who look to her as a role model.

That she has others who do computer work for her is great. It frees her up to do other things. However, I suggest that she keep her brilliant super-charged brain firing on all cylinders as she enters her older years by learning to use a computer. Other than doing crossword puzzles, I can think of nothing more challenging than doing battle with a dumb machine that makes you think far more intensely than you can imagine.

For example, remembering passwords is a major pain. I keep a log of passwords for handy reference, but I don't refer to it until and unless I am stumped when trying to log into a password protected page or program. I constantly surprise myself that I can remember so many different passwords. For me, that is a major benefit of using a computer =96 the constant challenge to remember what I want to remember.

But back to the senior center dilemma. In a nutshell, the center's problem with declining membership is that eligibility starts at age fifty. Remember when you had to be sixty-five to be labeled a senior? And then it was sixty, then fifty-five? Now it's age fifty. How can management not understand that's a major problem? I don't know any fifty- year- old woman who thinks of herself as a senior. (Maybe you know fifty year old "seniors" but I don't.) The term "senior" has become a to many older women, and well it should. It is loaded with too much decline-oriented baggage.

The director of the center says the senior stigma is so serious that groups such as the American Society of Aging and the Gerontological Center of America have been trying for years to find a new word to replace "senior". Why can't we call older people "older people" and let it go at that?

Why do we insist on rounding up mature people, labeling them with restrictive designations and herding them into age-segregated situations?

If the senior center cannot find enough people willing to call themselves seniors it needs to shut down and save taxpayer's money. The study began seven years ago. The group of women in the study was asked about their use of anti-resorptive agents and the women's was measured at the beginning of the study.

Researchers found an average 32 percent reduced risk of non-vertebral osteoporosis-related bone fractures associated with the use of anti-resorptive agents. This risk reduction was higher among women with major risk factors for fractures.

These findings are similar to previous studies that found anti-resorptive agents helped fractures in women with osteoporosis.

Another study found that low-dose estrogen therapy is more effective in treating osteoporosis in women with lower natural levels of estrogen in their blood. This is the first study to suggest a very low dose of estrogen may vary in effect substantially from woman to woman based on their levels.

A once-a-year injection of a common osteoporosis drug called zoledronic acid could be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Findings published in the May 3, 2007 issue of the the state researchers report annual injections of zoledronic acid greatly reduced older women's risk for fractures.

The once-a-year injection can be given to patients in the office with a 15-minute IV. The FDA has not approved a single-year injection yet, but researchers are very hopeful it will. This treatment would be a very convenient alternative for people who cannot or will not take traditional anti-resorbtive medicine. Still yet, it is not for everybody researchers warn. The study was in older people. Younger people should not be seeking this type of treatment. An outside expert agreed the new drug formulation could change the way people care for their bones.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that primarily affects women in their postmenopausal years. Men can also acquire osteoporosis; it is just not as common in men as it is in women. As Osteoporosis progresses bones get thinner and become more fragile. Thinner and more fragile bones mean "easier fractures." The goal is to help keep the bones strong and reduce bone loss to prevent fractures in women after menopause and/or over 50.

For women able to take these drugs, it is a very exciting discovery that will help prevent fractures in postmenopausal and/or women age 50 and over.

Furthermore, medical research has discovered that 40 year old women put themselves at high risk of developing these health conditions if they become pregnant, and the risk grows even higher with each passing year after 40.

As you can see, although it is rare for a woman to become pregnant during menopause, it is plausible. That being said, pregnant menopausal women need to be kept under the watchful eye of their doctor to protect the health of the expectant mother and the heath of her unborn fetus.

Doctors said the next step is further research that can provide a deeper understanding of what causes the more lethal subtype of breast cancer and why it tends to afflict a greater percentage of black women.
