Parents in the Oklahoma City Schools face similar challenge to parents around the nation. Preparing children for high stakes testing, trying to balance home and work, and preparing students for independence in a global economy are not small tasks for parents or teachers. What the children of Oklahoma City Schools have in their favor is a local community that is unusually supportive of public education. In 2001 residents voted in an historic bond initiate that used future taxes to provide new and renovated school buildings for all Oklahoma City Schools. Such a wide margin of public support is sadly unusual.

But give the community involvement the parents of Oklahoma City Public Schools really seem interested in what they can do to give their own children, and local schools, the best chance possible. As a former teacher and parent of school-age learners, here's my advice on the three critical steps parents can take for their children's success.

Read Together

Reading is the single most important skill for students in the Oklahoma City Schools. Until the third grade your child is learning how to read. But after that, he or she will be reading to learn. In essence, the success in every other subject depends on the ability to read. Yes- it is that important that you and your child set aside 15 minutes a day for reading. It doesn't matter who does the reading, it matters that it happens.

The Oklahoma City Schools have a great library system. If you're not a reader by nature ask the librarian at your Oklahoma City Schools' librarian for family read-aloud recommendations. There are books that you will enjoy reading to your child. And hey- turn off the TV on school days. Is it more important that you child is successful in school or that she learns the critiquing techniques of Simon Cowell?

Keep Showing Up

The Oklahoma City Schools are generally very encouraging of parents and others who want to volunteer in the schools. The biggest challenge for parents is usually finding the time. But again, a large measure of your child's success in the Oklahoma City Schools will be your amount of involvement. This may take some creativity if you work a job or two outside the home, or are a single parent. Some Oklahoma City Schools have elementary packets that they send home with parents to help assemble, cut, or color. The key is to let your children know what you're doing, and to deliver it to the teacher so you have more face to face time. Or just stop by and have lunch with your child.

Support Your Child's Teacher

The teachers of Oklahoma City Schools need parental support. Involvement, encouragement, volunteers, and backup with getting homework done=85.Your child's age will factor into the ways you can support the teachers and Oklahoma City Schools. But the end result is the same. It will help your child to succeed. <bio>Patricia Hawke is a staff writer for Schools K-12, providing free, in-depth reports on all U.S. public and private K-12 schools.
Many people understand the importance of exposure to the arts. We love art; it is a necessary part of our society. In fact, for every culture and every society, art in some form or another is critical to how we live. For many, many years, arts programs have been cut in Oklahoma City Schools in efforts to divert funds to "more pressing" subject areas like reading and mathematics. While these are indeed necessary subjects for Oklahoma City Schools students to master, including an arts education in a student's learning experiences can do nothing but improve their time attending Oklahoma City Schools, as well as contribute to the amount of success they see as a whole.

Most Oklahoma City Public Schools concentrate on teaching students in three ways; by showing them how to do things, by telling them the information they need, or by giving them opportunities to try things themselves (also known as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles).

There are, in fact, many learning styles as identified by Howard Gardner, psychologist and noted pedagogical theorist:

- Linguistic =96 "word-smart" - Interpersonal =96 "people smart" - Bodily-kinesthetic =96 "body smart" - Logical-mathematical =96 "math smart" - Naturalist =96 "nature smart" - Spatial =96 "picture smart" - Musical =96 "music smart" - Intrapersonal =96 "self smart"

More than ever, schools are realizing the importance of addressing all of these learning styles. Students attending certain Oklahoma City Schools are reaping the benefits of the commitment to providing educational experiences via these learning styles.

In efforts to give more and more students an education that addresses their specific learning style(s), some Oklahoma City Schools are integrating the arts into their programs. Following an "A+" model originally begun in North Carolina, Oklahoma City Schools are instituting their own arts integration programs. Originally a project of the DaVinci Institute, it is currently administered by the University of Central Oklahoma.

The model being used by Oklahoma City Schools looks at 8 different areas to improve arts integration in their schools:

1) Arts; 2) Curriculum; 3) Multiple intelligences; 4) Experiential learning; 5) Enriched assessment; 6) Collaboration; 7) Infrastructure; and 8) Climate

For teachers employed with Oklahoma City Schools, the program has been a godsend. All educators strive to "light the spark" and desperately want to reach all - 100% - of their students. For the instructional staff, of the Oklahoma City Schools using this model, discovering how to appeal to the different ways children learn has been exactly what they have been looking for.

Another impressive aspect of the program is the Oklahoma City Schools professional development that goes along with it. Instead of giving newly trained teaches the manual with the expectation that they follow the model, the A+ model provides extensive and ongoing training and support to all teachers new to the program. Oklahoma City Schools' teachers focus on learning to work together, using research-based practices to establish curriculum that includes interdisciplinary themes that foster arts integration across classes as well as use Gardner's various learning styles.

Clearly, Oklahoma City Schools are working to improve learning, one style at a time. <bio>Patricia Hawke is a staff writer for Schools K-12, providing free, in-depth reports on all U.S. public and private K-12 schools.
The state of Oklahoma is widely known for the outdoor recreation and recreational activities it can offer residents and visitors. The state boasts beautiful lakes, mountains and camping areas as well as first-class museums and cultural events. Oklahoma is rich with culture, too. With several Native American reservations, the State of Oklahoma is a true cultural experience. It is within these reservations that Oklahoma casinos thrive.

The work andquot;Oklahomaandquot; is from the Choctaw Indian word andquot;okla hummaandquot;, which means the andquot;land of the red peopleandquot;. Oklahoma is located in the western south-central United States. Kansas, Colorado and Missouri border the state to the north, Texas to the south, New Mexico to the west, and Arkansas to the east. The capital of Oklahoma is Oklahoma City, which is the center point of the state and the most heavily populated city within the state. Oklahoma ranks 28th in population in the United States and about 3.4 million people reside there.

Oklahoma offers both residents and visitors a wide range of recreational activities. The state boasts more man-made lakes than any other state in the United States. This makes outdoor sports such as boating and fishing very popular. In addition, the Arbuckle Mountains and many state parks draw visitors to outdoor activities such as camping and hiking.

In addition to the outdoor recreation that the state offers, Oklahoma is well known for its casinos. Oklahoma casinos can be found on Indian reservations across the state. While gambling is not legal outside of the reservations, the casinos within the reservations draw a large amount of tourists. With a change in gambling laws in the state, the Indian casinos are booming, since they are now able to offer gamblers Blackjack, Poker and Las Vegas-style slot machines. Craps and Roulette are still not allowed in Oklahoma casinos, but that could change.

Many of the visitors to Oklahoma casinos are Texans. Gambling is not legal in Texas and the other closest casinos are located in Shreveport, Louisiana where the drive is much longer. The two largest and most popular Oklahoma casinos are the Choctaw Casino and the WinStar Casino. The Chickasaw Nation, which is just north of the north Texas Metroplex area, operates both of these casinos, Oklahoma casinos are located throughout the state and are expected to raise billions for the state. Oklahoma casinos offer easy gambling access to visitors that live near the state. <bio>This article is the property of http://www.oklahoma-casinos.info Before you use my article(s), you must agree to my Terms of Service http://www.incomekey.com/terms_of_service.html </bio>

All you wrestling fans out there who aren't quite sure what to do for their next vacation should plan a visit to Oklahoma City. That's because the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum is located in Oklahoma City and it is a must see for anyone who enjoys wrestling. Here you will learn about wrestling's past, its present, and the plans for the future.

It is such an educational trip not to mention enjoyable that individuals who aren't that big on wrestling will probably even enjoy it. There really is a lot to learn because the sport of wrestling did not begin with the WWF - WWE. Instead, the sport had a much more modest beginning and the museum celebrates this as well as all the leaps and bounds the sport has made in popularity since.

When you head to the museum make sure you plan on arriving Monday through Friday 9 am until 4:30 pm or else by appointment on the weekends. Within the Museum you will see the Paul K. Scott Museum of Wrestling History, the John T. Vaughan Hall of Honors, Gable/Smith Room, FILA International Hall of Fame, William S. Heins Jr. Library, Cliff Keen Theater, as well as others.
All schools across America strive for excellence, which is reflected through various regional, state, or national awards. Being recognized as an excellent place of learning can help schools in numerous ways. Some awards give the recipients a cash bonus, while others give an endorsement of excellence. Oklahoma City Public Schools are no exception. Recognized for numerous, innovative programs, and admirable improvement, Oklahoma Schools enjoy a high status within the 50 states. Improved in reading and math, advances in technology, and being named a Blue Ribbon School are all examples of these recognitions.

One of the highest national honors an Oklahoma School (or any other school in the nation, for that matter), can receive is being named a Blue Ribbon School. The Blue Ribbon honors schools that have closed achievement gaps and where students are excelling at high levels. For the 2006 =96 2007 school year, several Oklahoma Schools have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. More than 50 schools in the state have been honored since this program began in 1982. Six Oklahoma Schools were honored for the school year. Four elementary schools and two middle schools received the honor.

The number of K-12 schools, public or private, that each state can nominate depends on that state's population. 60 percent of schools nominated each year for the Blue Ribbon status are recognized by the federal government. All six of the nominated Oklahoma Schools won the recognition. These Oklahoma Schools are recognized because they have met criteria in two areas. These requirements are: improvements made by low-income students, and schools that have scored in the top 10% on the state's standardized tests.

Advances in technology have been made in Oklahoma Schools. More than 200,000 computers are available for students' use, at a rate of one computer for every three students. Ninety-nine percent of Oklahoma Schools classrooms have internet access. A majority of this progress in technology comes from the federal E-Rate program, local bond issues and grants, and upgrades for schools and libraries in high poverty areas.

Oklahoma Schools not only added technology to the classrooms, but have also integrated standards defining basic skills of technology into its core curriculum for Pre-K through 12th grade, known as the Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS). Students must learn the operation of a computer, application of software as a tool, problem-solving skills, telecommunications skills and ethical and legal issues in using technology.

Oklahoma Schools have shown improved performance in reading and math at all levels between 2002 and 2006. Achievement gaps between different ethnic groups have narrowed between 2002 and 2006 in reading at all grade levels tested. The biggest improvements were seen in elementary math, but reading scores have also increased.

In the Technology Counts 2007 report released March 29, Oklahoma Schools earned an overall B- compared to the national average of a C+. The state's schools scored an A- in the use of technology for student standards, establishing a virtual school and offering computer-based testing. Oklahoma Schools, as well as the other schools throughout the nation were surveyed to measure the status of K-12 educational technology; developments over the past ten years are also considered. <bio>Patricia Hawke is a staff writer for Schools K-12, providing free, in-depth reports on all U.S. public and private K-12 schools.
Knowing when to refinance and not to refinance is difficult for every homeowner, but after bankruptcy, the decision gets even tougher. There are a lot of different things that should factor into your evaluation, including your current finances, your credit score, and your ability to get approved. Here are a few tips to help you decide whether or not you should refinance your Oklahoma mortgage after bankruptcy:

Evaluating Your Finances

There are many advantages to refinancing a mortgage after bankruptcy. You may be able to get a lower rate, a lower payment, rebuild your credit, or get cash back at closing. Unfortunately, it will cost you to refinance. On average, Oklahoma borrowers pay $3,181 to close on a mortgage loan. If you can't afford to pay for your refinance upfront or if this amount of money won't override the amount you will be saving, refinancing may not be the best thing you can do for your finances.

Understanding Credit and Interest Rates

Finances aside, there are two other factors that will prove to be most important when deciding whether or not it is the right time for a post-bankruptcy Oklahoma mortgage refinance. These factors are your credit score and interest rates. The rate that lenders charge you will inevitably be affected by your credit score. The lower your score is, the more the refinance will cost you in interest. Before making the decision to refinance, you need to understand exactly where you stand with your credit score and how it will affect the rate that you are required to pay.

Getting Approved

Surprisingly, getting approved for an Oklahoma mortgage refinance after bankruptcy isn't that difficult. As long as your house isn't worth less than the amount of your current mortgage, you shouldn't have much of a problem. Most lenders, especially those in the sub-prime industry, will be more than happy to work with you to get you the refinance loan you're looking for. <bio>For a list of Bad Credit Mortgage Refinance Lenders Servicing Oklahoma, visit http://www.oklahomalendingcenter.com/badcredit-afterbankruptcymortgage </bio>

Despite the fact that America boasts of one of the most effective judicial and criminal systems in the world, we still struggle mightily with the problem of dealing with sex offenders who prey on innocent victims. American society has yet to find an ideal approach to dealing with this social problem.

This concern has resurfaced in recent weeks due to various high-profile sex crimes in media. With the dearth of an effective national approach to the problem states and cities have tried to deal with sex offenders in their own way. For instance, California has instituted a two-year civil commitment for convicted sex offenders, which means that these sex criminals will serve another two years locked up in a prison facility in addition to the official sentence handed down by the court in their case.

Oklahoma is dealing with sex criminals in a different way. The state has a law that prohibits sex offenders from living in most residential areas in an attempt to keep them away from families and children that reside in these areas. An updated version of the law stipulates that these criminals cannot move into an abode that is within 2,000 feet of day-care centers, playgrounds and parks. Schools have been a banned territory for sex criminals in Oklahoma for years. In addition, sex offenders who were already residing in such areas when the law was passed will be compelled to move residence if they are within 300 feet of these locations.

As such, the law practically expels sex offenders from most places in cities and towns in Oklahoma, which leaves little option but to live in the rural areas. And already, this possibility has raised an uproar in several rural venues in Okalahoma as law enforcement officers, civil rights proponents, prosecutors, lawmakers and children's advocates complain that the new law will make Oklahoma countryside less safe.

As one local parole officer put it, ``Residential restrictions actually increase recidivism'' and since these criminals will likely be based in rural communities, that is where they will likely revert back to their evil form.

In any case, national observers are keeping a keen watch on Oklahoma to see just how effective this new approach to sex offenders will be. <bio>Kadence Buchanan writes articles for http://aboutoursociety.com/ - In addition, Kadence also writes articles for http://4aginginfo.com/ and http://itsfamilytime.net/ </bio>

Oklahoma Sooners football tickets are always in demand in and around Norman, but the 2006 season carried expectations as low as any season in recent history. The Sooners suffered one crushing loss before the season began, and suffered two more once the season started. However, the Sooners are once again in a BCS bowl game, and almost no one expected this. It's a credit to the coaching ability of Bob Stoops, and other factors are also responsible for this surprisingly successful season. We'll examine the reasons for this great season below, and Sooner nation will once again be out in full force in January.

Obstacles Presented

The Sooners seemed to be destined for a disappointing season even before fall practice got into full swing. QB Rhett Bomar, a returning starter and a player many expected to be among the nation's elite, was kicked off the team after it was discovered that he accepted money for what amounted to a "no-show" job, as it was alleged. Not only did the Sooners apparently lack depth at the position, but given the timing of this potential disaster, the team was basically put in a very difficult position on offense.

Two other serious problems arose during the season. The first was a highly-controversial loss to Oregon, which occurred when officials basically botched a late-game call that all-but handed the Ducks a victory. The Sooners play a challenging non-conference schedule with regularity, and this loss angered everyone from the coach to the president of the university, and it was quietly acknowledged by many that the Sooners had been robbed in that game.

Finally, the Sooners' superstar, RB Adrian Peterson, was lost to injury when he broke his collarbone diving into the end zone after another of his patented scintillating runs. Peterson was the most feared offensive player in the Big 12, and perhaps the country, and most teams simply don't overcome a loss like that and continue to win. Although Oklahoma Sooners football tickets are always hard to find, Peterson by himself was the reason many fans came out to see Oklahoma play.

Perseverance

As a credit to the program, each of these obstacles was met and handled with aplomb. New QB Paul Thompson, who had been expected to play WR this season, grew into his new position with what appears to be excellent coaching. Thompson has thrown for almost 2,500 yards and 20 TD's, and finished the regular season with a QB rating of 144.56. If that isn't great coaching, then there's no such thing.

The Sooners also refused to fold after the Oregon debacle, even though they did suffer a tough loss to Texas two weeks later, and were sitting with a mediocre 3-2 record as of October 8. Many teams would simply fold at that point, but all Oklahoma has done since is run the table, including wins over three ranked teams and a Big 12 title. Again, credit needs to go to the coaching staff for this continued focus.

Finally, the loss of Peterson did not ruin the season. New starter Allen Patrick has racked up 700 yards in only about half a season, and he has kept the running game at Oklahoma churning. Included in his body of work are games where he rushed for 173 yards at Texas AandM and 163 yards at Oklahoma State. The result is teams still have to fear Oklahoma's running game.

Results

The results speak for themselves. Oklahoma finds itself once again in a BCS bowl game with an 11-2 record, and a date with undefeated Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. This is perhaps Stoops' best coaching job, and Oklahoma Sooners football tickets are going to be impossible to find for yet another big-time bowl game. <bio>Written by Jay Nault, sponsored by http://www.stubhub.com/ .

When I was a child in the 1970's, my grandmother heard that Amtrak was coming to an end in our part of the country. So, she arranged with my parents to take us kids on a train ride one last time, before the end of an era. Fortunately, we were able to ride the train twice before the service ended in the Great Plains of the United States.

On our first trip, we rode the train an hour-and-a-half to Oklahoma City. On our second trip, we traveled much further, riding all the way to Fort Worth Texas. And then the Amtrak service ended its run from Chicago, Illinois to San Antonio, Texas. That was in the early 1970's, when I was about eight-years-old.

In the 1970's, Congress decided that in the era of air travel that the citizenry of the United States would not ride the train anymore. But in 1999, Amtrak brought its service back to Oklahoma. Now, if we are willing to change trains in our route, we can catch a train out of Oklahoma City and reach nearly every area of the nation in less than a day.

Traveling With Young Children

Given the challenges of arriving two hours early at the airport, toting young children through security, and keeping children calm during a long flight, a train ride may be much more attractive for most parents. With my children, we will not even consider flying with the kids, but we have taken the train to San Antonio to visit family.

With comfortable seating, great views of the Oklahoma and Texas countryside, and a dining car available to us, the twelve-hour ride to San Antonio and back again even beat putting the kids in the car for the long trip.

Don't get me wrong - if it were only my wife and myself, I would enjoy the long drive. But with three young children in tow, I would not consider making such a trip with the kids again. The last time we drove, we only had two kids, and that was very painful and frustrating, as the kids needed to get out and run about every hour. What is normally a 13-hour drive by car took two days and a hotel-overnight, when we took the kids with us for the trip.

Most Any Destination In The Country Is Served

When you visit the website, you should click the tab at top labeled, "Routes". Once on that page, you should click the link for the "Interactive Route Atlas". Upon doing so, you will notice that Amtrak routes run through 47 of the 50 states in the United States. The only states not served by at least one stop are: Hawaii, Alaska and South Dakota.

No matter where you live or where you want to travel, you will find that the Amtrak service can get you pretty close to your intended destination. When we rode to San Antonio, we rented a car that helped us travel the last ten miles to our final destination.

The Amtrak website offers an interactive scheduling tool, to help you to find the right train to carry you to your target destination. It can also offer you an accurate tool to help you to determine the real costs of your journey.

Compared To Airfare

In the next couple months, I need to make a solo trip to Chicago, Illinois, so if I decide to Amtrak to Chicago, I can do a full round trip from Oklahoma City to Chicago for just about $263. The same trip will cost me anywhere from $271 to $490 by air, depending on which airline I get my tickets.

Cash-wise, Amtrak offers the better deal. Time-wise, I gain a little bit of time by using an airplane. The train ride will take 15 hours. The airplane ride will be five hours, but I need to buffer that by arriving at the airport at least two hours early, so my airplane commitment will be 7-8 hours.

If I were taking my kids with me to Chicago, Amtrak would be my only consideration. However, since my future travel plans are related to business, I might opt to fly, but I doubt it.

Fun For The Whole Family

Not only is a train ride less stressful than an airplane ride, on small children; it is also less stressful on parents who are tending to the children. But beyond the stress factor, a train ride can be fun for everyone in the family, since more than one of you will be able to see out the windows on the train.

I have to be honest. When I took my children on the Amtrak to San Antonio, not only did they have fun, but also I found the trip as exciting as I did when I was eight-years-old.<bio>Chuck Saddler has traveled America most of his life. The team takes pride in it recent achievements including a National title in 2007. They have thirteen conference titles, seven division titles, and one Heisman trophy recipient.

Coach Leslie Edwin Miles heads the team today. He agreed to coach the LSU Tigers from 2005 until 2012. Coach Miles has a long coaching career, which he started in 1980 as an assistant coach for the University of Michigan. After the University of Michigan, he became an assistant coach of the University of Colorado from 1982 to 1986. From 1987 up until 1994, he went back to coach the University of Michigan. He helped the team achieve eight successive winning seasons.

He left Michigan to coach the Dallas Cowboys from 1998 to year 2000. He got his first head-coaching job in 2001 where he coached the Oklahoma State University. When he came to Oklahoma, the university football team was in bad shape. They had losing seasons in the previous years. Miles did not make any drastic improvement during his first season as head coach; however, he led the team in winning seasons from 2002 to 2004.

He had memorable games with the Oklahoma State University. Their face off with the Oklahoma Sooners was among the highlights of his coaching career there. He led his team to a victory against the much-favored Sooners during the end of his first season in the Oklahoma State. The next upset took place in the ensuing season. They again faced the Sooners by the end of the regular season, and again, they came out victorious. During the same year, the Associated Press named him the Coach of the Year for the Big 12 Conference.

His career as head coach of the LSU Tigers started in 2005. He replaced Coach Nick Saban who led the Tigers in a Sugar Bowl Title in 2003 and two Southeastern Conference titles in 2001 and 2003. His first season with the team was strong. Although they had heartbreaking losses to weaker teams, they manage to finish an 11-2 record.

The 2006 season was also a blast. Although they did not bag the division title, they received an invitation to play the Sugar Bowl and faced one of the strongest teams, the Fighting Irish. Here they defeated the Irish. By the end of the year, they ranked third. This was according to the ESPN polls and the Associated Press.

The 2007 season was tough for both the Tigers and Coach Miles. Several distractions were coming from the media. There were wrong reports about him leaving the Tigers. They also had another devastating loss at home to a weaker team, Arkansas. Although this was the case, the team came out victorious. They won the conference title and earned its third National championship title.

Speculations of Miles accepting the head-coaching job in Michigan refused to die until such time that Coach Rich Rodriguez accepted the offer. Settling that, he led the Tigers to a smashing 2007 season, winning the BCS National Championship game against the number one team, Ohio State Buckeyes.<bio>Rick Grantham is an expert on sports equipment, specially on LSU Tigers Merchandise for more information on College Fan Gear, visit BooYah Village.</bio>

Kristen Chenoweth tickets are a chance to see an artist who has excelled in every effort she's made in show business. Chenowith has built a loyal legion of fans from many walks of life, and she's hitting the stage once again. Below is a look at how this interesting and diminutive star rose to lofty heights, and there's no reason to think that her star won't continue to rise.

Early Life

Kristi Dawn Chenoweth was born on July 24, 1968 in the little town of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Chenoweth was adopted at birth, and enjoyed what can be viewed as a "normal" childhood with a supportive home and a nurturing family environment. She was always the one in her class to perform, and was in love with the idea of being on stage since she was a small child.

This desire took her to Oklahoma City University, where she began to blossom both as a performer and a person. She was voted "Miss OCU" and ultimately won first runner-up prize in the Miss Oklahoma pageant. However, Chenoweth offered then and continues to offer much more than beauty now.

She graduated with a bachelor's degree in musical theater and a master's degree in opera performance. Soon after graduation, Chenoweth turned down opportunities to advance her studies even further and made her way to the theater. It was here that Chenoweth's star began to rise.

Career

Chenoweth's career took off almost immediately after a few off-Broadway performances, but she landed her first Broadway role in Scapin in 1997, and she won a Theatre World Award for her performance. This was only the first of many awards and recognitions Chenoweth would enjoy, and she hit stage superstardom in 1998 with her performance in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Chenoweth won a Tony Award the following year for Best Featured Actress to go along with her Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

She continued to star in several productions, including her 2003 role in Wicked, one of the most successful theater ventures of all time, and a show that continues to draw a big crowd to this day. However, Chenoweth has also succeeded in several other genres, including television and music.

In regards to her music, Chenoweth has released 10 albums of different persuasions. Much of her work in the music world reflects her time on stage, as many of her songs are classics from the 1930's and 1940's, and she has also released other recordings of her Broadway songs. Chenoweth knows how to perform in concerts, as her stage experience lends itself nicely to a concert setting. Kristen Chenoweth tickets are always in demand because fans understand that they're going to see a first-class show.

Overall, it's hard to believe that this 4' 11" lady could stand so tall in the entertainment industry, but she's only going to continue to grow in popularity, as she has already excelled in every setting in which she has worked. If you want to see a true superstar do what she does best, get your hands on Kristen Chenoweth tickets today. <bio>Written by Jay Nault, sponsored by http://www.stubhub.com/ .
I will be describing the 1971 Nebraska-Oklahoma football game as seen through the eyes of a 20 year old die hard Nebraska football fan. I was born in Nebraska and spent my first 10 years there. In that time, my dad ,who was a huge Nebraska fan from way back instilled what has lasted to this day a love for Nebraska football.

In the late 50's we moved to Illinois and there was hardly any type of media coverage available for Nebraska football. By 1963 Bob Devaney had brought the Corhuskers to National prominence. The 1963 team won the Big 8 Conference and was headed to the Orange Bowl. At that time the game started in the morning. There were only 4 bowl games of national significance going on at that time, the Orange which the Big 8 was contracturally tied in with, the Cotton which had a team from the Southwestern Conference, the Sugar Bowl which had an SEC team, and the Rose Bowl which pitted the Big 10 against the Pac 10. In the Orange Bowl Nebraska was playing Auburn. Nebraska jumped out to an early lead on the first series with a QB keeper that went for around 67 yards. Oh Boy, they had it in the bag. Not exactly. The final series found Auburn deep in Nebraska territory, but with a break here and there the Cornhuskers prevailed 13-7.

By 1965 the cover of Sports Illustrated had Nebraska on its cover predicting them to finish number 1. Big Red fever was taking on a national fan base. The 1965 team had a chance at winning the national championship game except for the fact that Bear Bryant, Alabamas head coach found out we couldn't field an onside kick.

This trend continued, with a couple of lean years thrown in to become a stage setter for what was to be the 1971 game of the century.

The Oklahoma Sooners were good, really good. Their offense was nearly unstoppable, and they had a respectable defense. Nebraskas defense was considered excellent while their offense was quite good with Jerry Tagge, future Heisman winner Johnny Rodgers, and future first round draft pick Jeff Kinney. The Sooners had Jack Mildren guide the Oklahoma offense which ran a wishbone attack. It was a triple option offense that didn't rely much on the pass. It didn't need to, Mildren had rushed for over 1000 yards at this point an Greg Pruitt was averaging 9.5 yards per carry. The teams had been ranked 1 and 2 for the entire season and something had to give.

I remember listening to Howard Cosell do a 5 minute radio show every morning, and doing nothing but talking about the Nebraska Oklahoma game. Life magazines cover featured the game, along with Sports Illustrated. In 1971 there was usually only one game broadcast and the others you had to read about or try and catch some highlights on a Sunday morning college football show. I had seen Nebraska play Colorado earlier on television that year in which they won 35-7 and had gone to two other games in person (Missouri and Iowa St. where they won easily). They were now on the big stage. It was something I could have only dreamt about 10 years ago.

This football game itself ended up living up to all of its hype. Mildren who hadn't been much of a passer all year was killing Nebraska with his arm. Johnny Rodgers 1st quarter punt return for a touchdown was probably the deciding factor that couldn't be changed, as these two team competed evenly down to the final minutes.

After the game was over and Nebraska had prevailed by a score of 35-31 I felt a sense of pride and relief. I had just witnessed two great teams go at it for 60 minutes and my team came out on top. The 1971 Nebraska team regularly is ranked as the best college football team of all time, I'm always surprised Oklahoma wasn't usually ranked second. After the 1971 season concluded, Nebraska ended up with a unanimous number 1 ranking, followed by Oklahoma in second, and Colorado, which only losses came to Nebraska and Oklahoma as third in the polls.

I hope you enjoyed this little trip down memory lane.
