The scenery is primitive and has understandably, been the setting for films such as the Tarzan films.

Apalachicola Barrier Islands

Apalachicola, an old town south west of the forest, is the state's oyster capital. The three marvellous Barrier Islands are across the bay.

One of these is St George Island - a 28 mile barrier island. It is still the least inhabited and is unspoilt, even though you can get there by road. Its miles of white sand beaches are uncrowded, great for swimming and catching a variety of fish. You can see many gracious wildlife like turtles.

Take a break from the beautiful seashore and visit one of the many restaurants serving fresh local seafood such as oysters of course.

Or go shopping on the Island for clothing, beach stuff, gifts and art.

Another of the Barrier Islands is Little St George Island. Perfect for those who like a measure of isolation. The island is about 75 miles from Tallahassee and is reached by bridge and causeway from US 98.

You can camp for free, but bring your own facilities. There is of course, the white sand beaches, bird watching (ospreys and eagles), wildlife (yes, and racoons) and last but definitely not least - fantaastic fishing.

The third of the Barrier Islands is the St Vincent Island. You can only get there by boat.

But is has many fresh water lakes and salt water swamps. It is a birdwatchers paradise. <bio>Tim Burton writes travel articles for the popular Orlando Villas Florida by Owner website at http://www.milkriver.co.uk and Worldwide Villas by Owner website at http://www.worldwidevillas.net Article may be reprinted but must include the all the author's bio </bio>

The last card dealt into the flop in the center of a Holdem table is called the River. This card can break or make hands for more than one player at the table. Be careful if it makes your hand, as it could also make some other player's hand. There are obvious exceptions, like flushes or full houses, but just do not let making your hand blind you to the possibility that another player may have been helped by the deadly River card.

If you are unsure think about checking and calling your opponent. This is the safest way to play the hand. If it gives you the mortal lock think about check raising so as to get full value from the hand. If the card makes you an unusually good hidden hand, make a bet and hope you get raised.

If the cards are running over you then playing to catch on the River makes sense. Do not play for River catches all of the time, as this can be very costly in Holdem. Good players make bets and raises to stop others from playing to get River help. A small raise may be all that is needed to make an opponent throw away their hand and not see the River.

Do not be a constant whiner about getting beat on the River. It happens to all players who play Holdem. You also will get little sympathy from the other players who are forced to listen to your sad tale. You are not the first player to be killed on the River. River cards do even out over time. Some times you will get a strong hunch as to what the River card will be. It is okay to play a hunch in poker. The math of the game only goes so far for really good players. Watch a few tournaments on TV and you will see miracle River draws that defy any reasonable expectation by most players. It happens to all players, making or breaking their hand. It hurts when you get a bad beat on the River, but how you handle the adversity can determine how you play from that time on. Good players accept the River as part of the game. After all Holdem is a seven-card poker game and each player is entitled to see all seven cards if they are willing to pay the price. <bio>This article is the property of http://www.webcamcasinos.org </bio>

When whitewater rafting Salmon River Idaho is brought up in polite company, many people simply turn away with a look of shyness or quiet humility. This is likely because many of the potato-loving folks of the state of Idaho are very aware of the dangerous adventure that lurks on the Salmon River.

Many of them also are very aware of the fact that the Salmon River is known as "the River of No Return". This is not simply an urban legend, either, as most Idahoans will tell you. Regardless of this, many tourists must see for themselves in a yearly whitewater rafting Salmon River Idaho adventure.

Now whether or not the Salmon River is haunted is up to anyone's guess, but the reality behind the Salmon River is probably more frightening than any fictional adventure tale will inform you of. No, the Salmon River in Idaho is among the most frightening places in all of North America simply because of the fact that at one point, for seemingly no reason at all, the river plunges into the second deepest gorge on the continent.

This clearly signifies a very belligerent piece of natural heritage and clearly makes the Salmon River in Idaho one of the deadliest places in the entire world, second only to Euro Disneyworld.

Crazy Enough To Raft The River

Despite the true horror stories of the Salmon River and the fact that it, for no reason at all, plunges the poor rafter into suddenly gorged oblivion, people are flocking to it for whitewater rafting Salmon River Idaho adventure. Many locals shout: "stick to the potatoes" but the adventurous spirit in the rafters simply do not heed the cries.

Instead, many tourists and whitewater enthusiasts head to the Salmon River for fun, excitement, and certain doom. The last part, admittedly, has likely never happened on the Salmon River and likely never will. Nothing sells an adventure, however, like a little bit of danger.

So whitewater rafting Salmon River Idaho might not be the most dangerous place in the entire world. In fact, whitewater rafting Salmon River Idaho might not even be the second most dangerous place in the world; it might not even be the third, and so on.

But the reality is that under any circumstances whitewater rafting on any river can be dangerous without the proper supplies and without the proper safety precautions. So pack a potato for lunch, bring your lifejacket and paddles, and enjoy yourself on your whitewater rafting Salmon River Idaho adventure=85or else be swallowed by the gorge. <bio>John Mailer has written many articles on the extreme sport of whitewater rafting at http://www.whitewaterrafting-trip.com offering whitewater rafting vacation ideas.
Summer brings along with it the warm sun and glorious blue skies, outdoor activities and adventures. If you are one of those people who greatly enjoy the nature in all its beauty along with the adventurous sports it brings your way such as hiking, kayaking and camping in the wild then you are the right person for a river rafting adventure.

River rafting combines the dangerous rapids of the waters with the amazing views, which one has to see to believe that they exist. This is a sport for the brave who has an eye for the nature as well as a good physical condition.

What Does River Rafting Classification Mean?

If you have heard a few times about the classification of the river rafting for different rivers and wondered what they were, here are a few explanations, which will be of help:

Class I =96 This indicates that the river does not have dangerous rapids and beginners may venture on it with confidence. If you are a beginner and/or are not very familiar with the waters try a river rafting adventure on this type of river at first.

Class II =96 This classification indicates some fast rapids and channels which will require basic skill to be able to sail through them safely; only pick a river rafting adventure through these waters after you have practiced a few times in Class I waters.

Class III =96 This classification indicates some difficult currents and white waters through which one will not make it easily without previous experience in such waters. If you have never been through a Class III river rafting and still would like to try it out, do not proceed without an experienced guide.

Class IV =96 When rafting is given this classifications waters are expected to have both high torrents and relaxing stretches, which will require some expertise to handle successfully. Choose a river rafting adventure in these waters only if you have previous rafting experience.

Class V =96 The Class V river rafting waters are to be tackled only by an expert in river rafting; the currents will be high as well as the difficult to maneuver through the channels. This type of river rafting adventure will provide a thrilling experience.

Class VI - These types of waters are only advised for the masters in rafting and those who are addicted to real life thrills. The waters are dangerous and will not forgive anyone who makes the slightest mistake.

A river rafting adventure can be as fun or as relaxing as you choose =96 start slow and you will get to the high, dangerous waters in no time; rafting is addictive of that I am positive, the more you practice the more you want. <bio>John Mailer has written many articles on the extreme sport of whitewater rafting at http://www.whitewaterrafting-trip.com offering whitewater rafting vacation ideas.
Whitewater rafting can be a very dangerous activity. That's because the water is very rough. A whitewater rafting river is rough and is often riddled with rocks and rough terrain. For this reason, you should always follow the correct precautions while on a whitewater rafting river and always use the proper protective equipment.

When choosing a whitewater rafting river, you want to choose one in which the water flows very rapidly. The term whitewater comes from the way the water rushes past rocks and other terrain, which turns the water white. When the water's white on the whitewater rafting river, you know you've picked a good spot.

Rafting Tours

There are several companies that offer whitewater rafting tours for a small fee. They will show you exactly where to go and will show you the best whitewater rafting river for you and your skill level. You'll want to stay away from the particularly rough rivers at first. Then, as you gain more experience, you can move up to the especially tumultuous ones.

Use The Proper Precautions

Make sure you always wear a life jacket since rafting on a whitewater rafting river will inevitably send you into the water quite a few times. Since the water is so rough, the small raft gets tossed around quite a bit. And, since you are in the raft, you are bound to be tossed around as well. This makes it especially important to wear the proper protective gear while on the whitewater rafting river.

It is also a good idea to have a first aid kit handy while on the whitewater rafting river. You should also choose a first aid kit that floats. Since a whitewater rafting river is riddled with rocks and other rough terrain, your chances of getting cut on a jagged edge are fairly high. You'll want to stock your first aid kit with anti-bacterial ointment and bandages so that an infection can't set in.

A whitewater rafting river is a great place to raft but it can be very dangerous. There's no guarantee that you won't be tossed out of the raft or injured. You'll want to wear the proper protective gear, stock a good first aid kit and, most of all, use common sense.

Don't take chances and be extremely careful. After you have taken the proper precautions, then you can go out and have fun. Being on the whitewater rafting river can be very fun, just be safe and use your head. <bio>John Mailer has written many articles on the extreme sport of whitewater rafting at http://www.whitewaterrafting-trip.com offering whitewater rafting vacation ideas.
For many, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/whitewater+kayaking" rel="tag">whitewater kayaking is a fun, adventurous, and often adrenaline filled experience. whitewater rafting is usually done on a river in a kayak which is made of durable, tough plastic that is able to flex a little as it moves down the river. Kayaks can be anywhere from about 6 feet long to 12 feet or longer.

For beginners, tamer sections of a river are much better to learn in. the more extreme and advanced kayaking enthusiasts sometimes can end up looking like they are insane, especially if the river is particularly harsh.

Types Of Whitewater Kayaking

There are basically four types of kayaking. The first is generally called river running. This type of whitewater kayaking can be a combination of sight seeing and running down the rapids, or whatever types of challenges the river may offer. These kayaking trips can be one day or several days.

Creeking is a much more difficult type of kayaking. This is the type of whitewater kayaking which involves going down difficult parts of the river or rapids. Boats used in this type of kayaking are generally larger with a rounder front and back, which helps the kayak resurface more quickly if it happens to go under.

Slalom is another type of whitewater kayaking. This is basically the same as competing in slalom down a hill on skis. The kayaker navigates a section of a river, going in and out of the gates or poles. This involves going downstream through some gates and upstream through others. Interestingly, this is the only type of kayaking that is seen in the Olympics.

The most unique form of whitewater kayaking is called playboating or freestyle. Instead of going upstream or downstream, the kayaker generally stays in one area of the river performing different maneuvers, which can include spinning, cartwheels and other aerial feats. Sometimes you will hear this version of kayaking called whitewater rodeo in America.

Whichever version of kayaking interests you the most, there is one main requirement: you have to have a river to go whitewater kayaking. You can generally rent all of the other equipment once you arrive at the river, but it will take some investigating to find a river suitable for whitewater kayaking near you.

Whitewater kayaking can be a thrilling an interesting sport to compete in. Of course, you have to have a certain love of the water since you will be immersed in it quite often if you are going to go whitewater kayaking. <bio>John Mailer has written many articles on the extreme sport of whitewater rafting at http://www.whitewaterrafting-trip.com offering whitewater rafting vacation ideas.
The basic definition of a whitewater river is simply a river that has quite a few rapids along its length. The whitewater itself is formed in the rapids, when the river drops suddenly enough to let the water drop rapidly which then makes the water churn and froth enough to form whitewater, or basically foamy water.

Types and Features of Whitewater Rivers

Whitewater rivers are classified into six different categories worldwide. The ratings range from one, the easiest, to six, the hardest. The grades also refer to how technically difficult and dangerous the river and rapids are. The whitewater river's rating can change over time, depending on how quickly the water is flowing through the river, and also how deep the river is at that particular time. When a whitewater river is flooding, it may become more dangerous and difficult because the water is flowing much faster and is much deeper.

Whitewater rivers can have many different features along their path. These features all have their own names. Strainers are a blockage of the river that still lets the water run around and partially through it. Strainers are very dangerous features of whitewater rivers because once something is trapped against it, the water will continue to push against it, and the object or person will be forced down under the water.

Sweepers are simply trees that have fallen into the river or are partially in the river, but are still attached into the riverbank by their roots. Sweepers don't form whitewater but can still be dangerous because they can trap paddlers or seriously obstruct their path.

Hydraulics are a more serious threat on a whitewater river. Hydraulics form when water flows over the top of an object under the water, which can then cause the water to flow back upstream over the top of the underwater object. This essentially causes a whirlpool effect, which kayakers can easily become stuck in.

Pillows are another cause of whitewater. These are formed when a lot of water runs into a large object, which makes the water rage against that side of the object. Often the object that is the cause of the pillow can be undercut and kayakers may be forced underwater and trapped under and against the object.

Whitewater rivers can be thoroughly exciting and cause adrenaline rushes. This is simply because they can be very dangerous and the primal adrenaline rush makes it just that much more exciting. If you use common sense and take necessary precautions on a whitewater river, you will have a great time and more than likely survive the trip itself. <bio>John Mailer has written many articles on the extreme sport of whitewater rafting at http://www.whitewaterrafting-trip.com offering whitewater rafting vacation ideas.
Travel agents are used to getting calls from travelers interested in luxury travel vacations who want to travel on a budget. While some more experienced travelers may roll their eyes, there is one big secret for travelers who are looking for a five star experience on a three star budget. It is called river cruising.

These river cruises have all the benefits that large cruise ships have. River cruising ships and itineraries are specifically set up to meet the highest standards of luxury, comfort, and convenience, similar to that of a luxury world cruise. You only unpack your bags once, dining is included in the price, and you can visit several different locations. Unlike big sea cruise vessels, river cruise boats are much smaller, with a maximum passenger number of about 150. There are no large crowds onboard during dining times and at on board activities. You will come to know your fellow travelers very well, and are likely to form bonds to last a lifetime. Thanks to the small and intimate number of travelers, the attention paid to each traveler on a river cruise ship is truly the height of luxury.

With river cruises, you get more included in your fare than large sea cruises, making it a luxury travel vacation full of added value. River cruises usually include a half-day land excursion for each day of the cruise. Many river cruise boats do not have interior cabins, meaning you will have more views of the countryside. While most sea cruise ships are forced to only experience the charm of port cities, river cruises give travelers access to inland areas of countries. A lot of your sight seeing can be done from your boat. Imagine sailing along some of the most famous rivers and waterways of the world, rather than the country's infamously congested highways. River cruises often stop to experience sights that are more quaint, such as intimate villages, towns and vineyards, which would most likely be missed or overrun by a sea cruise ship. For more help with your luxury travel vacation visit http://www.amtvacations.com.

River cruises start at about $1,300 per person. That amount may seem like a lot when big sea cruise ships are offering interior cabins at about $500 per person; but on a river cruise, you are staying in a cabin with a guaranteed ocean view. On big ships, excursions are almost always an extra price, whereas on river cruises, they are included. With river cruises, all the food is gourmet, and is included. River ships are smaller, more intimate and are built to provide the highest level of customer service and satisfaction. If you want to take a luxury travel vacation and want the most bang for your buck, consider the values in a luxury river cruise. <bio>Virginia Morgan is an expert travel writer for http://www.amttravel.com/ AMT American Express Travel.
Whistler is a great location that thousands head to both in summer and winter for sports and just plain relaxation. The 7000 acres of one of the best mountain landscapes North America has, is filled with tourists year round. Whistler offers its tourists skiing in the glaciers, guided fishing tours, golfing, hiking and biking, Para-gliding and hang gliding, kayaking and rafting, which is just the tip of the ice burg.

Rafting River Whistler is ideal for all the family to enjoy. It is almost impossible to pin point and say that one particular river is better than the other. While the Birkenhead River provides you with a class three rapids which allow you to float longer than shorter paths, the Green river makes the ride fast, short and refreshing; the Elaho and Squamish rivers offer a more relaxing whole day adventure in store. So, even if one river does not have it all, all of them together offer something for everyone.

Whichever river you may choose, there are many packages and trips available to suit and match everyone's desires and needs. However, booking a river rafting Whistler should be done well in advance as it is a highly popular location both during summer and winter time.

Rafting - a Great Summer Exercise

Rafting is a great summer exercise that provides a full body workout, but it also requires that you be in good physical shape. The river rapids are rough in many cases, and it can throw you over board once in awhile, requiring quick reflexes and actions to be able to save your life, or the one of your fellow team members.

River rafting Whistler provides guides usually for beginners and/or those who request one. It is highly recommended for those who are practicing this sport for the first time or who are not familiar with the waters. River rafting Whistler is especially great because it has all types of possibilities from very adventurous, to a lazy relaxing day on the river.

Helpful Tips

Even if you are going just for river rafting in Whistler, indulge in other season activities that Whistler has to offer all summer long. Due to the fact that it's very popular and crowded with tourists year round, Whistler has well-organized activities and events. Again, book them in advance to ensure your participation.

River rafting Whistler is a recommended vacation for the whole family. There will be something of interest for everyone, no matter the age. So what are you waiting for, take the road to Whistler today to get in shape and taste the adventure. <bio>John Mailer has written many articles on the extreme sport of whitewater rafting at http://www.whitewaterrafting-trip.com offering whitewater rafting vacation ideas.
Whitewater rafting is a great experience for families, business teams, kids at summercamp, or just for some outdoor fun in the water. But the person who is going to be most responsible for a great experience on the river is your rafting guide. Most rivers have a couple of rafting outfitters to choose from, so how can you select one which will provide the best guides? We've done the research for you on what features to look for in the perfect rafting guide.

Safety First The first thing you should always be sure of is that your rafting guide is First Aid and CPR certified. Most rafting outfitters will require this for their guides to be hired. You will also want to make sure that every guide is recertified every year (or even more often!).

While most river rafting trips are fun, exciting and supremely safe, in the unlikely event of an emergency, there is a world of difference between a guide who is very familiar with CPR and First Aid methods and one who is new to the concepts. Always be sure the rafting company you go with has well-trained guides.

Licensed to Paddle In most states, river guides need be licensed by some wing of state government in order to operate river tours. The most common issuers of these certifications are the state itself, departments of wildlife, or forestry departments.

Rafting companies that operate without certified guides place an extra burden on the environment, and also may not meet the standards of safety training required by the state. Inquire about the certification of river guides at companies you are considering, and make sure that all of the guides with that company are certified.

Learning is Fun Although it's difficult to tell how knowledgeable a rafting company's guides will be without speaking to them, there are some clues that will help you identify companies with guides who will know interesting facts about the river and surrounding area.

Check out the website of the rafting company. Chances are they will put some of their knowledge of the area there. If their site has only general information on rafting and no links to local businesses, you might reconsider your choice. On the other hand, if the website tells you about some of the history of the area as well as recommendations for where to go after your rafting adventure, chances are you will be dealing with a company that knows the area and river and imparts similar knowledge on their guides.

By selecting a river outfitter with safe, certified, and knowledgeable guides, you are helping to ensure that you and your rafting group will be able to enjoy your ride to the fullest, without being scared or bored. <bio>For the best guides in the West Virginia, Maryland or Virginia area, check out http://www.buttstubes.com </bio>

Within the United States there are fifty stretches of river that are considered the cr=E8me de la cr=E8me for those who enjoy whitewater rafting. Regardless of your expertise, you will find whitewater rafting trips that cater to your abilities. Beginners can start with easy trips that introduce them to this popular sport, while experts can really test their skills on some of the country's most difficult stretches of river.

New England Whitewater Rafting

In New England, Vermont's West River offers class III and class IV rapids near Stratton Mountain that are tricky in the spring when the snow melts off the mountain and provides amazing scenery when the fall foliage hits peak in late September and early October. In Maine, the Penobscot River outside of the Katahdin/Baxter State Park area has many stretches that are challenging to experts. Some quieter stretches are available for beginners and intermediates. In Greenfield, Massachusetts, the Deerfield River is perfect for class II rapids.

Gauley River Rafting

West Virginia's Gauley River and Upper Gauley River are extremely popular whitewater rafting spots. The 2,000-mile stretch of river winds through the Appalachian Mountains creating rapids ranging from class I to class V. On top of this incredible length of river, the Summersville Dam creates upwards of 3,000 cubic feet of water per second creating strong rapids that challenge even the most experienced whitewater rafter.

Western US Whitewater Rafting

The thirty-five mile stretch of class IV rapids along the Rogue River in Oregon provides rafters with incredible views of bear, bald eagles, turtles, osprey, and otters in their natural habitats. Oregon's Owyhee River connects Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon. The class II rapids are perfect for families looking for a whitewater rafting adventure. The gentler Grande Ronde River is the best option for beginners who want to learn the sport of whitewater rafting in a less dangerous environment. Down the coast in California, the Tuolumne River, just outside of Yosemite National Park, provides class IV rapids for those seeking a challenge.

The Gunnison River in Colorado is the best choice for whitewater rafters who want to spend mellower moments fishing. Gunnison River winds through the Black Canyon and is a perfect river for trout and salmon fishing. Heading north into Montana, whitewater rafters will find many miles of whitewater rapids in Glacier National Park. The 220-mile stretch of Flathead River travels through the Glacier National Park, Great Bear Wilderness Area, and Bob Marshall Wilderness Area.

Tennessee River Rafting

Finally, Tennessee's Upper Ocoee River's "Olympic Run" is a class IV and class V stretch of river that travels through Tennessee heading towards Atlanta, Georgia. The Pigeon River in Tennessee is another popular choice, with many stretches of rapids that are suitable to beginners. The Pigeon River lines the borders of Tennessee and North Carolina, so you really visit two states at one time.

If you are planning a crazy whitewater rafting experience, find a cheap hotel nearby through HotelClub who have access to numerous accommodation options ranging from affordable 2 star hotels to the luxury and pampering 5 star hotels. <bio>http://blog.hotelclub.com </bio>

The beautifully diverse state of Wisconsin is crossed with beautiful and scenic rivers frequented by both kayakers and canoeists, as well as those enjoying a day of tubing, rafting, or just relaxing on the river. With more than 40 rivers for kayaking and canoeing, it is no wonder the whitewater kayaking in Wisconsin is some of the best in the nation. This brief guide will cover some of the best whitewater kayaking spots in Wisconsin.

The Bad River, winding through northern Wisconsin, offers more than 40 miles of whitewater for kayaking and rafting. Beginning at Devil's Gate footbridge in Ashland County, intermediate whitewater kayakers can brave class I through III rapids for 18.8 miles of scenic, mountainous views before ending at Elm Hoist Road. Another popular stretch of the Bad River for advanced whitewater kayaking also begins at Devil's Gate footbridge and boasts 6.2 miles of class III-V rapids, as well as breathtaking views of the Gogebic Range in Wisconsin.

There are many other sections of the Bad River that offer fun and exciting whitewater kayaking adventures for experienced paddlers, as well as a few calmer Wisconsin kayaking rivers nearby. If you are planning on kayaking Bad River, there are a limited number of hotels in the area and a few nearby campgrounds. It is recommended that you make reservations for overnight accommodations in advance. The best time to kayak the Bad River is in the spring, but the landscape is quite colorful in the fall. A variety of plant and animal life is abundant along the undeveloped shoreline and Native American artifacts have been discovered as well.

The Montreal River, passing through Iron and Gogebic Counties in Wisconsin, offers 40 miles of whitewater kayaking for paddlers of all experience levels. The Erickson Road to Saxon Falls Dam section of the Montreal River is a relaxing 16.7 mile paddle with class I and II rapids, perfect for beginners or to warm up for the highly difficult western fork of the river. The challenging western branch of the Montreal River features class II through V rapids and several waterfalls for an ultimate whitewater kayaking experience.

Accommodations can be found at several nearby hotels and campgrounds. The water gates at the area dams can create very low water levels at times, so it is recommended to check on gate openings before planning your whitewater kayaking trip. If the water is too low, the Montreal River is practically impassable. You can also enjoy hiking to Wisconsin's beautiful waterfalls or whitewater kayaking on the other numerous rivers nearby.

There are plenty of majestic rivers that offer outstanding whitewater kayaking in Wisconsin, from a refreshing paddle down the east fork of the Chippewa River to the heart-stopping rapids of the Potato River. Several of Wisconsin's whitewater rivers are perfect for multiple day kayak trips. Plan ahead and make the necessary preparations for overnight camping along the river and remember a durable, lightweight camping tent like the Coleman Exponent Krypton 2 that comfortably sleeps two and weighs less than 8 pounds. <bio>For more tips and information about Camping Gear, check out http: http://www.summitcampinggear.com. </bio>

But don't worry, special safety features make whitewater rafting a safer recreational sport. These rivers offer plenty of opportunities in addition to rafting: swimming, kayaking, fishing expeditions, etc.

The New River Gorge area is rich in history and culture. It flows North from the mountains of western North Carolina and it reaches the 'Grand Canyon of the East', the New River Gorge in West Virginia.

The New River took millions of years to carve this incredible gorge filled with breathtaking scenery, rich history and exciting whitewater rafting. Dependable and consistent year round water flows and exciting rapids like Surprise, Railroad and The Keeney Brother have made New River rafting a whitewater classic.

You can go rafting all the year, but you have to know it means a different challenge in every season. In springtime the river is full of big waves, only those with courage and adrenaline lovers try whitewater rafting in spring. This is class V, which means 'very challenging'.

Summer is for those who like cozy circumstances and who would like to enjoy scenery, instead of shouting and flinging among waves. It also means warm water, so you can swim and enjoy sunshine, too.

If you go in autumn, you'll love the colors of the nature. Another advantage of this season is that it is less crowded in autumn. So any time is a great time to experience whitewater rafting.

It doesn't matter if you are a beginner. There are many sections that are suitable for first-time rafters. Start with easy level, and you won't have any problem. Additionally, anybody can try whitewater rafting, even children, pensioners or coach potatoes. So there is no excuse! <bio>Fruzsina Csery wrote this article for http://www.westvirginiaonsale.com </bio>

Tony BrianFor kayaking in particular, you'd better have a basic understanding of nature's rules in the water. You'll want to know what you're in for when you look at a river and how to analyze the water before you ever set foot in it. Analyzing rapids could be the most important skill you learn besides paddling; it's good to know where to start.

Before ever setting out you'll want to know a few basic facts about the river you're facing. Do a little research, know the area around the river and read any information from other kayakers of their experiences in that river. If there are any impasses that need to be circumvented, you'll want to know before you get there. Have the area mapped out first.

Beyond simple research you can make some very important observations while you're out there that will help you to have a more enjoyable time. You should take note of the water speed and the current as well as the terrain around the river. If you are on a mountain you should expect steep drops and wild water, while valleys are slightly less predictable. If the slope is gentle and largely flat you'll be bored half way down the river though, so try and decide before getting in what you're looking at.

Beyond the natural terrain look for anything out of the ordinary that might spell disaster later. Look for trees in the water or freshly fallen rocks. You want to know what you'll be running into before you get there. Man made obstacles are a similar problem. Look out for bridges and fences as well as the occasional barbed wire or dam.

Before heading out check the weather forecast to make sure you're heading into something you can handle. Don't expect easy to read conditions if there is a storm on the way. Heavy rain can quickly change the course of a whitewater trip and you should be prepared. Check to see what has happened in the days leading up to your trip as well. If it's been raining a lot of late, the river level might be higher.

The past weather is very important in case of the rise or fall of the water line in the river. In either case you might be faced with unsafe conditions. Not only is it important to have a good idea of what you are paddling into, it's important to know that that will stay the same as when you checked on it before. Unpredictable weather or past extremes might have changed the flow of the rapids over time and make your ride much less safe than you'd like.

In general there are safe guards in effect to help a kayaker or rafter know what to expect when they approach a rapid. They are graded on a scale of I to VI and you should know the skill level that best fits you. Knowing the class of the rapids you're attempting is important as well as your own skill level. Never push you limits right away. Build up to attacking those harder runs.

White water kayaking is a fun and rewarding outdoor sport, but without the proper preparation it can become dangerous quickly. Take the time to research your river and the surrounding terrain and you'll likely have a much better time when you step in the water. <bio>Tony Brian is a freelance writer for outdoor sports magazines and a contributing writer for Body Sports, kayaking, water raffling and http://www.paintball-gun.com/milsim-gun-mods.html </bio>

White water river rafting is both adventurous and dangerous at the same time; it is easy to see why some get addicted to it however it offers both great whole body exercise as well as an outdoor experience.

Rafting Facts for Beginners

First and foremost, know that you will get wet no matter what you do so be prepared. It is a very fast moving sport, which leaves you with little time to think about what you need to do next so listen carefully to the more experienced rafters with you.

Wear the required gear with no exceptions, as there is a good possibility that you will be thrown out of the raft and can easily get hurt on rocks or other things found in the river. Helmet is a must at all times for beginners or professionals.

Life jacket is part of the gear without which no rafting expedition should take place; even the most experienced rafters have had difficulties with river torrents once thrown in the water.

Rescue Mission for Rafting Beginners

White water river rafting can at times get very adventurous and have one of the team members or all thrown over board at which time presence of mind and common sense is required to quickly rescue and recover the raft, whichever the case may be. In case one of the team members in the raft is thrown in the water, here are a few easy steps to follow to assist with the rescue mission:

Do not panic, that will lead to making a wrong move thus risking everyone's life in the raft. Reach out if the fallen person is within reach and pull them up to the boat with both arms. If the person in the water is too far away, reach them with the paddle. Extend the handle towards the person in the water and hold strong on the other side.

Every raft meant for white water river rafting is equipped with a rope bag, which is to be used when a fellow raft member falls overboard and is too far to reach with the paddle. A very important rule is never ever to stand up in a raft as the high river torrents will overturn it in a split second and all of you will then need assistance.

The Thrill of the Game

White water river rafting is dangerous but very addictive; the fact that you need to be always careful and still get to enjoy the nature at the same time makes it one of the best summer sports. Follow the rules, use common sense and go with the flow, you will soon come back for more white water river rafting no matter how hard the first ride was. <bio>John Mailer has written many articles on the extreme sport of whitewater rafting at http://www.whitewaterrafting-trip.com offering whitewater rafting vacation ideas.
Mississippi's name was derived from the "misi-ziibi" Ojibwe word which means "Great River". Another Ojibwe term for it would be "Gichi-ziibi" which means "Big River". It is regarded as the United States' 2nd longest river.

The famous Mississippi River is regarded as the United States' 2nd longest river. It has a length of 3,734 kilometers coming from the Lake Itasca that is found in Minnesota, its source, going to the Gulf of Mexico, its mouth. The recognized longest would be the noted Missouri River, its tributary, which measures 3,767 kilometers.

The famous Mississippi River is actually a part of the so-called "Jefferson-Missouri-Mississippi River System", North America's largest recognized river system. It is also included amongst the worlds largest. With a length of 6,275 kilometers, it ranks as the 4th longest. With an average discharge amounting to 572,000 cubic feet, it ranks as the 10th largest.

Amongst the various long Mississippi tributaries, the longest is indicated as the popular Missouri River and followed by the documented Arkansas River. Thus, if according to water volume, it is the renowned Ohio River that ranks as the largest.

Mississippi's name was derived from the "misi-ziibi" Ojibwe word which means "Great River". Another Ojibwe term for it would be "Gichi-ziibi" which means "Big River".

Hence, Mississippi River's widest point is actually Lake Onalaska, which is beside La Crosse, Wisconsin. It is about 6.4 kilometers wide. Since the so-called Lock and Dam No. 7 created Lake Onalaska, it is indicated that the historically widest natural spot with over 2 miles and 3 kilometer wide measurement would be Lake Pepin. However, this area is more of a reservoir rather than a "free flowing river". As for the areas that feature the Mississippi River as a "real river", it is noted that they exceed a mile when it comes to their width and they are located in many places along the Mississippi River's lower course.

Moreover, the Mississippi River is divided into two parts, the "Upper Mississippi" and the "Lower Mississippi". For the Upper Mississippi, its source would come from the south towards the renowned Ohio River. The Lower Mississippi, on the other hand, its source would come from Ohio towards its mouth which is beside New Orleans, Louisiana.

Furthermore, the Upper Mississippi has a series composed of 29 dams and locks, which were mostly built during the 1930s. Their design is mainly maintaining a 9-feet deep channel meant for commercial barging of traffic. With regards to the formed lakes, these are being utilized for recreational fishing and boating. Although the dams actually make this river wider and deeper, it still doesn't stop it. In fact, flood control is not even one of its intentions. In the event of high flows, the gates, which are mostly submersible, are being completely opened. With this, the dams would basically cease its function. Thus, just beneath St. Louis, Missouri, you will find that the Mississippi River is already free flowing. This is amidst being constrained by several levees and generally directed by several wing dams.

On record, the famous Mississippi River runs throughout a total of 10 states. It is even utilized in order to define the portions of the borders of these states. Plus, during the time when these borders were being established, it is the middle part of the riverbed that acts as the line for defining the state's borders. Although the river has shifted since that time, there were no indicated changes with the lines of Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee. Up to now, they still go after the Mississippi River's former bed.

When it comes to the Mississippi River's watershed, it is indicated also that it has the world's 3rd largest catchment or drainage basin. It follows the Congo River and Amazon River. Aside from this, it can drain about 41 percent of the total 48 US contiguous states. This basin can cover over 3,225,000 square kilometers, which also includes either parts or all of the 31 states as well as 2 Canadian provinces. Thus, this drainage basin is emptied at the actual Gulf of Mexico.

The Mississippi River's major tributaries are as follows:

1.Mississippi

•Yazoo River
•Big Black River

2.Louisiana

•Red River

3.Arkansas

•Arkansas River
•White River

4.Kentucky

•Ohio River

5.Illinois

•Kaskaskia River
•Big Muddy River
•Illinois River
•Rock River

6.Missouri

•Missouri River

7.Iowa

•Skunk River
•Des Moines River
•Maquoketa River

8.Wisconsin

•Chippewa River
•Wisconsin River

9.Minnesota

•Crow River
•Minnesota River

10.Wisconsin and Minnesota

•St. Croix River

When it comes to the drainage area of the Mississippi River, it actually drains the areas between the renowned Appalachian Mountains and Rocky Mountains. This is excluding the areas being drained by the Hudson Bay which is through the North's Red River, Rio Grande and the famous Great Lakes. It is also noted that the actual retention time from the popular Lake Itasca towards the Gulf would be around 90 days.

With regards to the Upper Mississippi River, it is further divided into 3 distinct sections:

1. The headwaters -- This is from the actual source towards Saint Anthony Falls.
2. A somewhat series of lakes that are man-made in between St Louis, Missouri and Minneapolis.
3. Middle Mississippi -- This is a "free flowing river" that runs downstream of the actual confluence with St. Louis' Missouri River.

The tributaries for the Upper Mississippi River would adjoin the:

• Minnesota River -- Twin Cities
• Des Moines River -- Keokuk, Iowa
• Wisconsin River -- Prairie du Chien
• Ohio River -- Cairo, Illinois
• Missouri River and Illinois River -- St. Louis, Missouri

With regards to the Lower Mississippi River, the sub-tributaries would include the:

• Platte River -- Missouri River's tributary
• Tennessee River -- Ohio River's tributary
• Arkansas River -- Arkansas
• Atchafalaya River -- Louisiana (Mississippi's major distributaries)

Thus, the fresh water that flows from the famous Mississippi River going towards the renowned Gulf of Mexico doesn't combine immediately with the salt water. It will stay intact while it flows towards the Gulf, and towards the regarded Straits of Florida. Then, it will enter the so-called Gulf Stream. After this, it will round Florida's tip and go up towards the southeastern coat towards Georgia's latitude. It is only after this that it will mix with the ocean thoroughly and will not be detected by the assigned MODIS anymore.

The average annual discharge of the famous Mississippi River is between 200,000 up to 700,000 cubic feet. Even if it is the world's fifth largest river by volume, this is only a fraction of what the Amazon River can do. It can move approximately seven million cubic feet during the wet seasons. At an average the famous Mississippi River can only stand with about a 1/11th fraction of the Amazon's capability. Thus, even so, it is still twice of the regarded Columbia River's and six times the popular Colorado River's volume.<bio>For more information on Mississippi River please visit our website.</bio>

You can see beautiful scenery or enjoy a workout traveling over some rapids. The New River white water rafting trip is one of the greatest you can go on. Below are a few things you should consider before taking the rafting trip especially if you have never gone white water rafting before.

The difficulty level of a rafting trip is important especially if you have never gone rafting before. A level five rafting trip is strenuous and takes a great deal of skill. When you are new to river rafting you should start out with a level one to a level three. This will give you plenty of adventure without being too difficult for you. If you have questions it is best to call a guide who does New River white water rafting trips and speak to them about the difficulty levels and which trip might suit you and your family. When considering taking your family on a white water rafting trip you will need to ask at what age your child can go. Some rapids require your child to be a little older while other spots on the river can be for the younger child.

The more experience you have the more fun you can expect. Of course it will take a little work, but going over a level five rapid makes up for the work you might have to put in during some part of the trip. A guide will make certain that you have a life vest and will give you some pointers on how to handle the paddle during certain parts of the New River white water rafting trip.

Once you have established the skill level there are a few other things to consider such as the proper clothing and shoes to wear. Depending on the time of year you choose to go rafting you may need a few extra layers or some sunscreen. As far as shoes go you will want to wear something that will not fall off your feet, as you will need to put your feet in footholds to protect yourself from falling out of the boat.

Taking a trip on the New River white water rafting is an experience you will never forget. Taking simple precautions is important as is choosing the proper difficulty level. Speak with a guide to find the best trip for you. You will also be able to choose the amount of time you go on the trip. There are all day trips or half day trips depending on how long you wish to stay out. If you go on an all day trip you will want to make sure about who will supply the lunch meal. Often all day trips will provide you with a meal.

You may want to go as a group or along to meet new friends, but either way you will want to make sure to plan enough time to enjoy the rapids for days. Since the price is right, you may want to plan for a few different locations in the area. <bio>You can also find more info on http://www.whitewaterraftingtripsguide.com/White_Water_Rafting_In_Washingto= n_State on White Water Rafting In Washington State and http://www.whitewaterraftingtripsguide.com/White_Water_Rafting_San_Francisc= o on White Water Rafting San Francisco. </bio>
