Can I? Will I be able too? What if I fail?

You have the training, skills, and knowledge necessary to accomplish a task or conquer a challenge, but a doubt or a fear of failure keeps you from moving toward your desired outcome. Sound familiar? The Self-Help world is filled with advice and technologies to render every doubt into a certainty. I know of at least a dozen (neuro-linguistic programming) and that are sure-fire recipes for eliminating doubt. Understandably, a life filled with certainty has an appeal, but let us not toss the `doubt' baby out with its old bathwater. The skill of proper doubting is an extremely useful resource.



Of course entertaining a doubt might not be the perfect activity while or approaching a potential dance partner; a doubt is a very useful thought to have when considering one's perceived barriers and weaknesses. Like a that never gets around to putting something off, a person that gets into the habit of doubting his doubts might just find doubt's .

Think of something you know, or truly believe to be true. A classic example would be "the sun is going to come up tomorrow". Most of us feel fairly certain about that idea. Notice how it feels, and even pretend to know where you feel that feeling. Is it inside, or outside of your body (remember, you're pretending), if there is an image associated with this certain thought is it bright or dark, close or far away, a still shot or a like a movie? Imagine you have a place somewhere inside or outside of your body you can call your `position of certainty'. That position is where your strong beliefs and certainties exist. Play with that certainty until you're familiar with its experiential structure.

Next, do the same exercise with something you doubt. Make it an obvious doubt such as "I doubt I'll ever sprout wings and fly" or "I doubt I'll ever be president of MicroSoft". If you don't doubt either of those two suggestions, good luck, and pick your own. Notice how you doubt in terms of the same qualities that you observed with the thought you were certain about examined above. Imagine or pretend there is a `position of doubt' somewhere around your body.



Now, think of a thought you are certain of, or believe firmly, that you would rather not be so sure of. Examples of this might include "I don't deserve success" or "I'm not good enough". Make it a problematic certainty that you wouldn't mind doubting. It probably shares many of the structural qualities with the strongly believed thought you examined above. Check and see.

Finally, imagine rapidly taking that last certain thought that you would like to doubt, and quickly changing it's qualities and location to resemble a doubt. If, for example, certainty is big and bright, and doubt is smaller and dark, take this thought that you'd like to doubt and quickly shrink and darken it, and snap it into the `doubt' position. Do that a few times=85. certainty to doubt=85. certainty to doubt. Do this as fast as you can. Remember, your brain works much faster than you think. Now, take a deep breath, and re-examine that thought you'd like to doubt. You will probably notice it feels, well, more doubtful. Of course, you can also do the reverse, and change a doubt to a certainty. Never doubt the value of proper doubting. Your brain is a playground=85so play.

If you see the value in this process, but just couldn't get the hang of it, I recommend contacting a local hypnotherapist or NLP practitioner to help you discover doubt's ability to free you from debilitating beliefs. Debilitating beliefs are often unconscious, and require the trained eyes and ears of a hypnotherapist to uncover.

Once upon a time, Jake and Fear were . Fear was Jake's constant companion, and Fear helped him a lot. Fear saved him from lots of troubles and dangers, and helped him choose right paths and ways in his life.

Whenever Jake would carelessly go with the wrong company of "friends" or make a very careless decision, Fear would butt in and remind him of his father's counsels and admonitions. When walking right in danger's path, Fear would whisper a word of warning to him from proceeding.

Fear would also tell him the proper behavior when Jake was in front of the elderly and other people in authority. Fear would give him the ability to do and say only the respectful and kind words to people. Fear would also tell him to be polite and humble when there was a conflict with people he was related with. In short, Fear has been helping him to keep out of troubles and dangers. Fear was really a friend. Jake liked Fear's company.

Then one day, Jake met Doubt. Doubt seemed very concerned and sincere about Jake. Doubt said his closeness to Fear was remarkable -- but alarming. Doubt threw lies about Fear, distorting the truth that Jake knew about Fear. Worse, Doubt said Fear was actually taking him to a perilous direction, with Jake being unaware.

Jake asked Fear about the things Doubt told him. They had some discussions that somehow went a bit sour. They parted ways with some misunderstandings.

Then one day, Jake heard that Fear had suddenly died.

Doubt lost no time in scaring Jake about Fear. Doubt said that Fear's and his unsettled "dispute" with Jake might to come back from the dead. Thus, the ghost of fear started to haunt Jake. He would remember the times when Fear accompanied him and warned him of bad things. But this time, he feared the voice of Fear.

The more Jake listened to Doubt, the worse he became afraid of Fear. Fear seemed to be no longer a friend, but a spooky entity that sought his destruction.

End of the parable.

The best way to "exorcize" or get rid of these "ghosts" of fear is to make fear somehow a friend again. You can use your fear to help you if you face the truth about it. Your negative imagination creates your ghosts. A crazy imagination is good if you use it to create a "friendly" ghost. This is what I recommend.

I am a firm believer in "following your gut" and I've had to learn the difference between intuition and self-doubt. For me, what works best is to listen to what that doubting voice is actually saying. If its message is mainly lack of belief in your ability or your deservedness, then ignore it and forge ahead. As you gain self-confidence, you'll hear from that little voice of doubt less and less often.

The dictionary defines self-confidence as confidence in oneself and in one's powers and abilities without any suggestion of conceit or arrogance. This is exactly what you gain when you fake it, take risks and stop letting doubt control your next move. The doubt demon loves artists. This sensitive bunch of individuals falls prey to it so easily, from to Woolf. This reared its ugly head when Stephen King threw the beginnings of Carrie into the wastebasket. We all owe our gratitude to his wife, Tabitha, who picked it out of the wastebasket and encouraged her husband to keep going. Some struggling writers don't have such champions. Many writers ask themselves: Am I good enough? Am I wasting my time? If I was really talented I would be (published, successful, rich) by now. These kinds of thoughts are evidence of the doubt demon. The doubt demon can only be conquered by a concerted effort to give it as little attention as possible. Not just by you, but by the people around you.

As a published author, and one who has been in the business for several years, it's hard to say this, but not everyone you know will want to see your writing dreams come true. Not because they're mean (some are), but because they are unhappy with their own and don't want to see you change or cannot share in your dreams.

Avoiding the doubt demon is basically impossible for most of us, but there is something you can do about it. When you are facing the doubt demon make sure only to speak to friends or family members who are truly invested in seeing you succeed. You can identify these individuals three ways. The:

1. Always have something upbeat to say. You say, "I just got another rejection. I must suck." They say "No, you just sent it to the wrong editor." If they say something like, "You get a lot of rejections maybe writing isn't your thing," they are not someone you want to discuss your dreams with. As artists, we know the and how they can impact people (read any bestseller). The spoken word is just as powerful (ask any leader) and you need to protect yourself from all negative input.

2. Are basically happy. Sorry, but unhappy people can't give you the support you need. If they're bemoaning man troubles or their jobs they likely won't have the energy to lift your sagging spirits. Unfortunately, the phrase 'misery loves company' is true. So look for happy, optimistic individuals for support. You don't need many. One will do.

3. Make you feel good. No matter what, they are enthusiastic about your efforts, ask about what you're up to, and are generally interested in what you're doing. At times, when I've begun a story and it's not coming together I have a friend who I always call. I know I can depend on her to say or do something that will make me feel good. If someone makes you feel bad, take them off your list.

Fighting the doubt demon is hard on your own. You need to find a cheerleader to place in your corner. As I've said earlier, even if it's only one person have someone you can call to give yourself the boost you need. The wonderful thing about a cheerleader is they can come in two forms: Those who read your works and those who don't. I know people who continue to support my writing ambitions, but who have never read any of my work. They believe in me and that's support enough. So go out there and find your demon fighters. Early Life

Stefani was born in Fullerton, California on October 3, 1969 and grew up in Anaheim, an Orange County community just down the road. She was raised in a stable home by her mother and father, and enjoyed what many would consider a "normal" childhood with her two brothers.
