Sleep is essential in order for us to be able to function normally everyday. A good night's sleep will refresh our mind and body providing us with the energy and spirit to face a new day. Lack or sleep can cause a variety of disorders that can disrupt our lives, making our daily activity and interaction with others difficult.

Understanding REM Sleep Disorder

Rapid eye movement or REM during sleep occurs when we are actively dreaming, which happens approximately 20 to 25per cent of the time we are asleep. During this time the brain is as active as when you are awake, the blood pressure increases but the body is inactive with the muscles experiencing paralysis or loss of muscle tone, which is normal during sleep.

When you will experience REM sleep disorders, your body's muscle will actively take part in your dream actions as well as causing reactions such as, talking in your sleep, moving body parts, shouting, jumping and walking. What causes REM sleep disorders is not yet exactly known but it has been recorded in patients with neurological disorders such as, Parkinson diseases, Shy-Drager and Lewy body, which is also known as dementia.

Treating REM Sleep Disorders

There are a variety of drugs available to treat REM sleep disorders however; choosing the right type for you can only be done by your doctor. He can do so after he has carefully examined your condition and considered your medical history or other medical conditions you may have at present as they may also be part of the cause of your REM sleep disorder.

Patients that suffer from REM sleep disorders should take preventive steps while sleeping such as, placing sharp objects away from the bed so he or she does not get hurt when moving in sleep. If possible have someone sleep close by to help stop the person from hurting himself in the sleep and if possible place the bedding on the floor in order to avoid the possibility of falling from the bed or consider installing bed rails.

Helpful Tips

Usually REM sleeping disorders occur in elderly people with an existing neurological disorder due to which reason do not self medicate and/or use sleep-inducing drugs without a doctor's prescription as they could further deteriorate the condition. However, you may want to try natural remedies such as aromatherapy baths, candles and massages that helps relax the body into a deep and profound sleep mode. <bio>Simon Peters is the owner of http://www.on-sleep-disorders.com, it is THE best source for advice on the subject of insomnia and sleep disorders . . . </bio>

A person with RBD sleep disorder acts out dramatic as well as violent dreams while he or she is in a rapid eye movement (REM) stage sleep. It is also accompanied by shouting as well as grunting, and seems to resemble other sleep disorders that involve motor activity such as sleepwalking or periodic limb movement disorder. However, these conditions do not occur during REM sleep as is the case with RBD sleep disorder, and is characterized by sleep paralysis.

One will notice RBD sleep disorder in men of 60 years of age or above though it can occur in those who are still quite young as well. This condition is the subject of many family anecdotes, and may often not reach the ears of those that matter most =96 doctors. It has thus led to inexact statistics relating to such incidences. In fact, it was first described in 1986, but there is no sure known cause why such a condition arises.

RBD sleep disorder does occur while there is rapid eye movement sleep in which brain activity patterns are like wakefulness that can be documented by polysomnography as well as other sleep tests. Another characteristic of this condition is a state of atonia or muscle paralysis, and the body is still, but the brain is extremely active.

RBD sleep disorder by itself will not cause the patient to feel sleepy during the day though it is found to be present along with other sleep disorders which could result in daytime sleepiness. Some of these disorders include sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorder as well as narcolepsy. It will also cause the bed partner to be awoken, which is how the patient will become aware of such a condition.

Not Mental

RBD sleep disorder is not a psychiatric disorder and patients do not have a mental problem though it is most often found to affect men, and is uncommon in women and children. It is believed, that less than one per cent of the population has such a condition. People more advanced in age are most prone to such a condition and anyone with a neurological disorder may also be afflicted.

RBD sleep disorder is likely to affect (it is believed, up to 33 per cent) of those people suffering from Parkinson's disease and it is believed, that 90 per cent of those with multiple system atrophy are also likely to get this condition. RBD sleep disorder gets worse with time and so, requires consulting a sleep specialist to minimize the risk to both the patient as well as his or her bed partner. <bio>Simon Peters is the owner of http://www.on-sleep-disorders.com, it is THE best source for advice on the subject of insomnia and sleep disorders . . . </bio>

Even with a significant amount of research and studies being conducted examining the connection between mercury and autism, many people still do not fully understand this connection, or whether a connection even exists at all. This is due to the highly conflicting nature of these studies and published information. This article will attempt to clarify the treating mercury poisoning autism link.

Before we can truly understand the connection between mercury and autistic children, it is important to clarify what exactly autism is. Without delving into too much detail, let's just classify autism. In that case we'll say that, like ADD and ADHD, autism is a neurological disorder, or ND. Essentially this means that autism is a disorder affecting the nervous system. This becomes important when we learn that one of the main causes of neurological disorders is believed to be heavy metal poisoning, such as that from mercury and aluminum.

In recent years, the number of children being diagnosed with autism and other neurological disorders has rapidly increased. And while the reason for this is hotly debated in academic circles, one theory claims that the increase is due to significantly more exposure to heavy metals such as mercury for today's children. The claim is that there are increased levels of mercury in our food, water, and air.

But can mercury really be targeted as a cause for autism? To many people, the answer is an unequivocal yes. They believe that an increased exposure to such heavy metals at a very young age is what is causing this recent spike in the diagnosis of children with neurological diseases like autism.

Is there a Treatment?

There is a new form of autism treatment that is currently gaining a lot of momentum. Known as biomedical treatment, this method attempts to solve autism by rectifying the root of the problem =96 the physical condition of the nervous system. This is contrary to the common opinion of experts that autism is a psychological disorder, because the outwardly visible symptoms all indicate as much. However, the theorists in support of biomedical treatment argue that these symptoms are simply a by-product of an unhealthy nervous system, making autism a physical disorder.

The ultimate goal of biomedical treatment, then, is to rid a child's body of toxic substances, and to begin to mend already-existing harm done by toxins. However, this method of treatment is not universally considered an effective medical treatment. Despite this, there are many popular treatment programs based upon the biomedical treatment school of thought. And while slightly different in their approach, the goal of each is to rid the body of unwanted toxins, and to increase levels of healthy nutrients.

Once again, this treatment method is not universally accepted in medical circles. But, it is gaining momentum, and a good chunk of the supporters are parents who claim to have seen positive results in their child as a result of treatment. Because of this, the treating mercury poisoning autism link may very well be worth looking into. <bio>By Rachel Evans.
Orbital Cellulitis is an infection that affects the eye and the skin and tissues surrounding the eye. It basically affects the eye and the other parts of your eye structure within the eye cavity. This disease can affect people of all ages and sexes and is a serious condition which should undergo treatment as soon as possible.

This is caused due to bacteria which causes the infection. There are three types of bacteria that cause orbital cellulitis. These are Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes and Haemophilus influenzae. Once you contract any of the bacteria mentioned above, your eye will get infected and there will be lots of other complications too.

The bacteria are contracted directly or from other areas of the body. The most common of such areas are the sinuses. Once the bacteria moves into your eye, then there are a number symptoms that can help you identify if you have the condition or not. Some of the common symptoms are swelling of the eyelids, swollen eyeball, difficulty in moving the eyeball, fever and other mild discomfort. These symptoms are deceptive in the sense that they may be mistaken for another eye condition which is not as serious as Orbital Cellulitis. If you have Orbital Cellulitis, then the fever will keep recurring. You can use this to identify if you are suffering from the condition. Once you start experiencing these symptoms, you must consult a doctor and get your eye diagnosed.

After the diagnosis, there are a set of ways in which the diagnosis can be confirmed. These include, blood tests, x-ray, ct scan and cultures of the discharge from your eyes. The most conclusive test is the culture test as you can directly identify the bacteria in your eye.

The condition is treatable although it depends on the extent of the infection. The main treatment is antibiotics, but there may be other complications that may result in surgery. If you have contracted the bacteria from the sinuses, then there is a chance that some of the bacteria are still there. This requires surgical drainage of the sinuses and at times even the eye. This surgery will ensure all traces of the bacteria are wiped out from your body. You should ensure that the treatment is prompt and you should get admitted in the hospital for observation as it is a potentially damaging condition. An eye care specialist is the ideal person you should visit in case of such diseases.

If this potentially damaging disease is not treated promptly, then some serious complication may arise. These can be menegitis, loss of vision and neurological deficits. As the bacteria are in your eye, there is a high chance that your brain also gets infected. This is the reason why this condition is potentially damaging.

As you can see above, unless you receive a diagnosis, you cannot identify whether you have Orbital Cellulitis. As soon as you start experiencing the above mentioned symptoms you should rush to an eye care specialist who can conduct all those tests to confirm his diagnosis so that you receive the antibiotics as soon as possible before any potential damage.<bio>Visit our website if you are interested in more articles about laser hair removal treatment, acne, skin care, laser acne treatment and more.</bio>

Parkinson's disease, especially in its early stages when the symptoms are mild, is not easy to diagnose. The non-specific, and easily overlooked signs of Parkinson's disease make it difficult to spot, and unlike many illnesses, there is no one laboratory test or radiological exam that will provide a definitive diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

Patients exhibiting Parkinson's-like symptoms may undergo blood and urine tests, or CT or MRI scans to exclude other conditions, but none of these provide a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. The best way to test for Parkinson's disease is to conduct a systemic neurological examination that includes tests to gauge a patient's reflexes, muscle strength, balance, coordination, gait, and overall movement. However, according to information presented on The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research website, up to 25 percent of Parkinson's disease diagnoses are incorrect.

Why is there confusion about diagnosing Parkinson's disease? The simple answer is that the symptoms of Parkinson's disease are not clear cut, and therefore, it is easy to mistake them for other conditions, or to classify them as Parkinsonian when they are not.

Here is an overview of the top three conditions mistaken for Parkinson's disease:

* Multiple system atrophy (Shy-Drager Syndrome). This is a rapidly progressing disease that first features autonomic nervous system insufficiencies (dizziness, lack of bladder control, impotence, etc), and then takes on Parkinson's disease-type symptoms, such as rigidity, bradykinesia, tremor, postural instability, and difficulty walking. Some neurological specialists have speculated Shy-Drager syndrome may be a form of Parkinson's disease rather than a separate condition, but for the time being, it remains its own entity.

* Supranuclear palsy. This disorder results in rapid paralysis of eye movements, difficulty speaking, rigidity, and subtle mental shifts. Supranuclear palsy is a disorder of a different part of the brain than Parkinson's disease, and patients with this condition do not tend to respond to standard anti-parkinsonian drugs such as levodopa. The speed at which this disease progresses also sets it apart from Parkinson's disease.

* Benign essential tremor (familial tremor) is a gradually progressing condition that presents as tremors in the hands and arms on both sides of a patient's body, and occasionally the head. Unlike Parkinson's, familial tremor does not affect the legs, and the two illnesses respond to different drugs.

Beyond those three, there are several other conditions that are confused with Parkinson's disease, including multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), Striato-Nigral degeneration, normal pressure hydrocephalus, pseudobulbar palsy, Wilson's disease, Hallervorden Spatz disease, olivopontocerebellar degeneration, Huntington's disease, dystonia, and brain tumors.

With such a variety of illnesses sharing the same symptoms and characteristics, it's not surprising Parkinson's disease is often misdiagnosed. People who have mild symptoms, or who would like a second opinion, should ask their doctor about having the diagnosis confirmed by another physician. With early diagnosis as the key to maintaining longer-term independence and a high quality of life, it is important to have an accurate diagnosis so that appropriate treatment therapies can begin immediately. <bio>David Williams contributes to several popular web sites, most recently http://becid.com and http://depek.com </bio>

Physical therapy tables are necessary fixtures for every therapy program. Physical therapy tables are utilized to augment more than just physical therapy programs, but pediatric therapy programs, geriatric therapy programs, neurological therapy programs and others. The physical therapy tables in our inventory are designed to accommodate the needs of almost every patient, whether they're in a wheelchair or require the use of walkers or other mobility aids. Each physical therapy table is easy to move, simple to adjust, and the crank handles on the physical therapy tables are retractable so they won't present an obstacle or hazard to either patient or healthcare provider. The physical therapy tables we carry are simply vital for any rehabilitation program and physical therapy procedure.

The purpose of physical therapy is to help patients regain the use of their muscles, bones, and nervous system through the use of exercise equipment, heat therapy, cold therapy, massagers, whirlpool baths, among a myriad of other techniques. Every physical therapy treatment plan attempts to relieve pain, improve strength and mobility, and train patients to perform necessary tasks in order to resume their everyday lifestyles. Physical therapy is often prescribed to rehabilitate a patient after many injuries, illnesses, and disease such as:

- Amputations - Arthritis - Burns - Cancer - Cardiac Disease - Cervical and Lumbar Dysfunction - Neurological Problems - Orthopedic Injuries - Pulmonary Disease - Spinal Cord Injuries - Stroke - Traumatic Brain Injuries

The duration of any physical therapy program varies depending on the severity of the injury or illness being treated as well as the patient's response to therapy.

Physical therapy tables are commonly used in exercise regimens, the best known and most widely used form of physical therapy. Depending on the patient's condition, exercises may be performed alone or with the assistance of a therapist. An exercise regimen will incorporate rehabilitation and exercise equipment including physical therapy tables, floor mats, stationary bicycles, walkers, wheelchairs, practice stairs, parallel bars, and pulley weights among others.

Physical therapy programs also incorporate hot and cold therapies. Heat therapy can be applied with compresses, paraffin wax therapy, or by soaking in a whirlpool. This strategy aims to stimulate a patient's circulation, relax muscles, and relieve pain. Cold therapy can be applied with ice or soaking. As well, massagers can help improve circulation, relieve pain and muscle spasms, reduce swelling, and help the patient to simply relax. Electrotherapy may also be used to stimulate muscle and make them contract, helping weakened or paralyzed muscles respond again.

Geriatric physical therapy encompasses a broad area of issues that concern people as they age, but is typically focused on the elderly. There are conditions that affect many people as they grow older including arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, hip and joint replacement, balance disorders, and more. The use of physical therapy treatment tables in geriatric physical therapy will help restore dexterity, movement, cognizance, object recognition, and more.

Neurological physical therapy focuses on individuals with a neurological disorder or disease, including cerebral palsy, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, stroke, spinal cord injuries, and others. Common problems associated with neurological disorders include vision impairment, poor balance, paralysis, and loss of functional independence. Therapists use physical therapy treatment tables to work with patients to improve these areas of dysfunction.

Pediatric physical therapy uses a wide variety of modalities to treat disorders in children. Physical therapy tables will be utilized as work stations to improve motor skills, coordination, as well as cognitive and sensory processing. Children with developmental delays, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and torticollis are a few of the patients treated by pediatric physical therapists. <bio>To learn more visit our http://rehabilitation-products.medical-supplies-equipment-company.com physical therapy tables section or read more about the benefits http://rehabilitation-products.medical-supplies-equipment-company.com/PPF/p= age_ID/199/article.asp physical therapy. </bio>

Almost everyone knows something about Autism, heard the name or read something about its symptoms, but the true fact if the matter is that autism is not known and that it is kept only for the friends and families of those how are and have been affected by this condition.

In the widest and most general description Autism is a mental condition, mainly effecting the ability to communicate and focus attention on what sometimes seems like an inability to show affection and feeling towards others. One of the most popular ways of defining autism is that the autistic person is detached from the environment, it is like having a glass wall between you and the autistic who you are trying to communicate. Autism has been the cause for many studies and a lot of experimentation, it has many scientists and psychologists working all their lives to try and understand this mystery better, to try and ease the suffering of the families and relatives of autistics everywhere, in getting this wall down, improving the communication and help improve that life quality of autistics.

There are different levels of autism, usually even before diagnosing the seriousness of the condition you can have several indications of the severity of the condition, many parents confirm that they already had an idea of some kind of neurological problem or a mental condition in their mind a few months after the baby was born. When a baby is diagnosed as suffering from autism the next step is to find a second opinion, not because the doctor might be wrong, but to reconfirm the diagnosis and to learn more about autism, as well as averaging the level of autism the person has.

The lake of social interaction abilities and the other symptoms of autism do not mean that autism equals retardation, as some autistics are highly skilled and many are in fact geniuses in many different areas, some autistic have phenomenal mathematical skills, it has been clearly proven that some autistic have a superior overall ability in math, as well as outstanding memory skills.

One of the recognizable and very unpleasant physical expressions of autism is that the autistic person has repetitive movements, even repeating a word or sentence, these movements and convulsions are one of the signs needed to define autism behavior, on top of the repetitive movements there are, sometimes catatonic behavior which is misinterpret by many who are not aware of autistic behavior.

The most important things the public has to learn is that with recent findings, autism has been found to be much more complex and that some experiments have resulted in communicating with people of different levels of autism, we should know and remember that they are not retarded and sometimes even gifted, that they are oversensitive to information and store it immediately, they are curious and intelligent and deserve attention just like any other person, it has also been found that although they are incapable of showing affection that certainly have deep and strong feelings. <bio>Jonathan Mayheart has been writing and publishing his articles on the internet for a few months, he currently writes about health, mental problems and their cultural and personal effects at http://www.autism.advice-tips.com/ </bio>

Following two recent studies, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) announced a Permax recall on March 29, 2007. The Permax recall includes both the name brand Permax (peroglide) and the generic versions of peroglide. Current studies have revealed Permax heart valve disease in around one-fourth of Parkinson's patients who have taken Permax over an extended period of time.

Permax Valvulopathy (valve injuries) first came to the attention of the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002. Permax was approved by the FDA in 1988. Prior to the Permax recall, the FDA added a black box warning regarding the risk of serious heart valve damage.

Permax side effects including heart valve damage were revealed in the studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). High rates of valve leakage were found in up to 20% of patients prescribed Permax. Dr. Robert Temple, the associate director for medical policy at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, stated that Permax (Peroglide) was linked with a fivefold increase in regurgitation of the mitral, atrial, or tricuspid valves compared with the general population. The side effects revealed in these studies were further evidence of the ongoing problems leading to the Permax recall.

Permax, which is also known as Peroglide, is used in the treatment of Parkinson's patients and also for a condition called Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). Parkinson's disease is caused by the degeneration of neurons in an area of the brain involved with movement control that results in a progressive neurological disorder. Restless legs syndrome is also a neurological condition, however it is often misdiagnosed even though it affects around 2.7% of people in the United States. Permax heart valve damage has been reported in both Parkinson's and Restless Legs Syndrome patients around the United States. The Permax recall is expected to affect the future treatment of both Parkinson's and RLS patients.

Permax was released in 1989 after being developed by Eli Lilly. Over 500,000 people have taken Permax since 1989 to treat Parkinson's and RLS. Two European studies were conducted in Britain and Italy. In the Italian study, of the 155 people who had taken Permax, 23.4% of them developed Permax heart problems. The British study involved 11,417 people who were taking the drug. Patients in the British study were 37 times more probable to develop Permax heart damage problems. Serious Permax heart valve disease has also been reported by the Mayo Clinic in patients who took the drug and were later diagnosed with heart problems.

The FDA has announced that due to the Permax recall patients with Parkinson's should:

=95 Contact their healthcare professional to discuss alternate treatment options.

=95 NOT stop taking Peroglide (Permax) without consulting their healthcare professional, since stopping Permax can be dangerous and several other effective treatments are available.

The FDA has stated that the effect of the Permax recall will not be immediate. There will be a delay which will allow doctors and patients to arrange for appropriate replacement treatment options. Following the Permax recall, the companies that manufacture and distribute peroglide (Permax) are cooperating with the FDA in the removal of the drug from the marketplace. <bio>Steve Fields - To learn more about http://www.injurygroup.com/ Permax Recall please visit our website.
Have you found yourself having a hard time concentrating on the tasks at hand? Perhaps you find yourself getting restless and starting to get involved in physical exercises or becoming a more outgoing person. If these are things that are happening in your life, then you may actually be dealing with a problem that is called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a problem that is usually found in young children, especially children that are under the age of seven.

Yes, it is true that children are more commonly affected than adults are by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Believe it or not, this is a condition that is beginning to affect more and more children and it is often seen in the children of famous people, such as celebrities. The symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are actually very similar to those found in normal kids. However, it is important that you learn and understand more about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

According to published reports on the disorder, it is a neurological syndrome and a mental syndrome as well. In fact in some cases it has actually been known as a condition of the brain that does not allow the person affected to properly focus. This leads to the condition where a person who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has problems focusing, they may also have problems concentrating, which can go on to become a severe problem, since it is hard to achieve anything without being able to concentrate and focus.

Also, in the United States along, it is estimated that between 2- 5% of children that are school age are now showing signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, in adults, it usually affects between 2-4% of people, although it is rarely actually diagnosed in adults.

One of the main reasons that it is difficult to diagnose these symptoms in adult patients is that they have been going through the symptoms and dealing with the condition since they were a child. Even though they probably showed manifestations of the problems when they were children, over time they have become more physically and mentally mature. As they mature they learn new skills and acquire more knowledge, which allows them to better deal with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in their life. So, it becomes a problem to actually diagnose this problem.

CONCLUSION

Ask yourself after reading the above if any or all the symptoms described fit you in any manner? If you think they do then seek competent medical advice. Keep in mind the factors like age, current stress level and general life conditions before you come to a firm conclusion on this. If you happen to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as an adult, it can make your life more difficult to deal with, so you need to have treatment from a medical professional. Even though you may have developed methods for coping with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, you still need to get professional help, since your coping methods may fail you from time to time. <bio>Lorenzo Hughes makes it easy to understand attention deficit disorder, quickly and easily.
If you find that you are suffering from a weak urine stream, you may be surprised to find out that it is a fairly common condition that affect people of both genders and all ages. The people who primarily suffer from this often-ignored issue are older men around the age 40 who have enlarged prostate glands, if if this describes you, you'll find that there are several ways to look at this condition and also to treat it.

If you notice that you are experiencing hesitation or delay when it comes to urination, you should start thinking about the causes and what you can do about it as soon as possible. It can be hard to detect, as it comes on gradually, and it may be a small problem for years before you think to have it treated. If this condition is left untreated, you'll find that it can even result in full urinary retention, where the individual finds himself unable to urinate at all. Because this later problem is a direct result of the former situation and because it can result in bladder discomfort and distention, the sooner you get this problem treated the better.

The primary cause for urinary hesitancy, as this condition is called, is an enlarged prostate gland. As men get older, there is a good chance that their prostates will enlarge, and because of this, you'll find that they can the enlarged glands can pinch urethra, resulting bladder muscles that are thicker and more sensitive. This can greatly affect the urine stream over time, but you'll find that this is far from the only cause. A urinary tract infection, especially one that keeps recurring after treatment, or some prescription drugs could be the culprit, as could certain neurological disorders. It is also possible that the temporary inflammation of the prostate gland is to blame.

When you are looking into the treatment for a decreased or irregular urine stream, you need to remember that any symptoms like vomiting, blacking out or persistent fevers are reasons to seek medical advice, but you'll find that barring anything that extreme, you'll have several different options in front of you that you can try at home. Looking ahead and planning for the worst, remember to keep a good record of your urination patterns so that you can report them to a doctor as necessary.

Some men find that the application of heat to their lower abdomen, just a few inches below the navel, can relax the muscles there and help strengthen your urination flow. Similarly, massage or light pressure over your bladder can help you stimulate the urination flow to where it is stronger as well. Many men also find that the issue of dehydration can be problematic, so make sure that you drink the requisite 8 cups of water a day. Drinking cranberry juice, which is a natural diuretic, can be advisable as well.

If you feel that an infection is to blame, make sure that you go to your doctor for the right kind of antibiotics. There are many reasons that you might be experiencing this problem, so keep an open mind, and if necessary, speak to a professional!<bio>Visit ProstateOlympus.com to be aware of the reality of Prostate Gland.</bio>

Autism is a neurological, developmental disorder, which can inhibit the normal developmental growth of individuals. Symptoms of autism include impairments in social skills, as well as communication skills, repetitive behaviors, and poor speech patterns. Because the severity of the symptoms will vary, some individuals diagnosed with autism may be able to live on their own, while others become totally reliant on someone to care for them. While there have been theories that autism may be caused by immunizations, there has been no scientific data found to link the two together.

Research has been conducted to find a connection between autism and immunizations and research will be continued to discover what causes this damaging disorder. However, none of the data collected, from the research conducted so far, has been able to prove this theory. The National Childhood Encephalopathy Study was investigated in 1997. The study was to find a connection between neurological function and the measles vaccine. Researchers did not find any connection between the two and if anything, only confirmed that the measles vaccine did not contribute to any neurological disorders or dysfunction.

Several other studies done over the course of the next nine years were also conducted to find the link between immunizations and autism. Again, none of these have shown as strong link between the two. One of these studies, conducted in 1998 by Wakefield and colleagues, suggested that the MMR vaccine caused intestinal abnormalities and developmental regression in children within a few weeks of receiving the MMR.

However, this study had its problems, including the fact that only 12 children were used in the study, they did not use any healthy children for control subjects, and at least 4 out of the 12 children involved had behavioral problems before they experienced any symptoms of bowel abnormalities. Due to the fact that so much was wrong with the research, many of the researches retracted their opinions of the results and none of the results gained can be used as supporting evidence.

What does all of this mean? Generally, for any theory to be proved, scientific data must point one toward the answer. None of the research conducted in trying to find a link has been proven. Many studies are going on that are following the theory that autism is linked to a genetic abnormality.

Recently, a study was conducted on over 30,000 Japanese children, born in Yokohama between 1988 and 1996, that has really taken hold as proof that there is no connection between the MMR and autism. Basically, what this study shows is that even after the MMR was replaced with single vaccines, the number of children diagnosed with autism has continued to rise. What this means is that parents should no longer be worried they are putting their children in danger when they get the MMR.

The fact is that throughout the years of research, not one study can prove that there is a link between the triple immunization, MMR, and autism. The research will continue, however, for the cause of autism in the hope that we will not just find a cause, but a cure, as well. <bio>Rachel Evans.
The number of women affected by MS increased by 50% during the interval between 1980 and 1990, compared to the number of cases in men , which is almost the same every year, indicate the latest research of US Department of Health and Human services. The autoimmunity of MS makes even more necessary the research on the fourth main cause of disability among the women in America .

The MS' autoimmune character is given by the attack of the body against myelin, which seriously damages the nerve and the fibers. Same as the other autoimmune diseases, MS occurs much more often in women than in men (about 75%).In return, the progress of these diseases is more rapid in men.

Because the statistics hadn't have been improved since 1976, and more and more cases have been reported in the last 30 years, Curtis Nooman, PhD and his team of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Register in Atlanta actualized these statistics.

His results prove that the women are 2.6 times more often attacked by MS than the men. The disease mostly affects people around 50 years of age. The race also represents an important factor: white women are significantly more predisposed to MS than those of other races.

It is difficult to explain the reasons that determine MS to make such discrimination. According to Noonan, there are some hypotheses, but not a clear answer related to this question. The new discovery regarding treatment for this disease will provide essential help to the permanently increasing number of affected women. But these very improvements are considered by Nooman to be a reason for the increasing wave of MS cases in women. He attributes that to the so many new methods that can diagnose it, which in the past was not easy to perform. But these opinion may be contradicted by the fact that in men no such situation has occurred.

What makes the women the "favorite" victims of MS?

To determine what makes women more predisposed to MS forms the object of a large number of researches. For now, even if there are a few starting points that may point to the right direction, only speculations and hypotheses can be made. If the truth was able to break through these speculations, it would be a revolutionary discovery and even the gate to a cure for both women and men.

The first object of the scientists' research is represented by the feminine immune system that is thought to hold the key to the autoimmune disease's mysterious ways.

One of the main hypotheses is based on some scientific facts that involve both MS and pregnancy such as the fact that the symptoms enter remission during pregnancy and get worse after the baby is born. A daring analogy was made between the reaction of the organism to pregnancy and the one it develops in case of autoimmune disease. The hypothesis goes even further and blames the cellular transfer between the mother and the fetus and the other way around to favor the apparition of MS.

In the past, the worsening of MS during pregnancy was associated to hormonal changes. Nowadays, Michael D. Lockshin, director of the Barbara Volcker Center for Women and Rheumatic Diseases places the old hypotheses among the other clues for this mystery. "Hormones unequivocally involved in the sex differences. They are, however in my belief, part of the process, not the cause", he says.

Genetic factors are also considered to increase a person's predisposition towards MS. This predisposition affects his or her entire family although the disease developed by each member may not be the same. One family member may have gout, other -- osteoarthritis and other -- MS.

The neurological exam

The very neurological exam will be preceded by a discussion with the doctor about the characteristics of the symptoms: what are these, how often do they occur, what do they look like, etc. the MS is a condition in which any additional piece of information may be extremely important.

The examination will focus on:

* - Mental capacities and emotional factors. * - Reflexes, vision, balance, movement, coordination of the movement and sensations.

The duration of this examination including medical history usually is up to 2 hours

What is the purpose of neurological examination?

A complete physical examination also includes neurological examination but is a less accurate one in case there is no suspicion of nervous system conditions. A much more careful examination is performed for people that have MS symptoms.

The result of the exam may be normal which means that all the functions of the nervous system develop their activity as they should, or abnormal, which indicates weakness, partial or total blindness, problems of balance or coordination and the alteration of sensations.

The symptoms of MS are of many different kinds, depending on where the lesion has occurred. But there are damages that don't develop symptoms, which need other examinations and tests in order to correctly diagnose MS. <bio>For more information visit http://www.multiplesclerosisresearch.com </bio>

Some autism behavior management treatments are also advised such as autism behavior cognitive therapy. When combined, these procedures and tools will surely result to an observable positive change in an autistic child's behavior and outlook in life.

Autism Behavior Checklist

The autism behavior checklist is the first stop to make. This will include certain aspects of behavior which need to be modified such as manners, attention span and a child's level of maturity. It is crucial to monitor the progress a child is making, or in some cases, failing to develop.

In order to make the checklist work, cognitive behavior therapy should be applied. This can happen with the help of special education centers which teach children with autism the right ways of life through thoroughly researched manners. Hand in hand with such professional help should be the parent's or guardian's devotion into reinforcing the lectures whenever the kid spends time with them.

Autism Toys

To reinforce the lessons and therapy, a child with autism should gain access to the best neurological toys. These are playthings which stimulate and enhance the brain's function, in order to make up for an autistic child's way of thinking. Mostly, these consist of easy to moderate puzzles and colored toys. The use of these toys will also train the children to lengthen their patience, a trait which most autistic kids lack.

There are also toys which produce sounds and visuals which easily catch a child's attention. The development of such toys is a clever move since children with autism often suffer from short attention span.

By utilizing all these tools, anyone will be able to treat a child with autism with utter warmth and care. As you can see, these methods are very easy and the tools aren't too expensive. As such, bringing light and joy to an autistic child's world is as easy as can be.

If you are experiencing troubles with your child regarding autism, just apply all that you have read in this article. Combine it with a lot of love and care and you'll see that bringing happiness to life's greatest blessings is as easy as one- two- three. <bio>http://www.howtoall.com/Healthfiles/howtocopewithachildwithautism14.htm http://www.howtoall.com/Healthfiles/howtodetectsignsofautisminachild13.htm http://www.howtoall.com/index.htm </bio>

A team of highly trained therapists is there to help and guide you through this time of need.

Most people associate physical therapy with just exercise and massage, but the practice has broader aspects where its main goal is to rehabilitate a person back to their optimum health prior to their injury. Physical therapists are knowledgeable in some aspects of medicine such as the study of a disease or injury, its causes and the possible treatment approach for it. Therapists are trained in diagnosing and treating these injuries through proper assessment and through the application of manual skills in order to help get their patients back in tiptop shape.

The most common conditions treated in therapy centers are those with cardiovascular and pulmonary problems, neurological, and pediatric, as well as orthopedic, and geriatric cases. There are centers that specialize only in one or two of these conditions but a majority of the clinics handles all of these conditions. It would help to know about your condition so that it would be easier to find the right center that will cater to your needs.

Here is a description of each area that is usually treated by physical therapists.

Orthopedic conditions -- this includes dysfunctions in the muscle and bones. Patients may have undergone surgery due to an accident or an illness that affects the muscular and skeletal system. Treatment of these conditions will include exercise and training to help improve their condition. Modalities are applied to help relieve pain and swelling so that it will not limit the patient's capacity for recovery.

Geriatric conditions -- this focuses on those who have conditions that arise due to old age. Conditions such as arthritis, incontinence, osteoporosis, and even the complications that go with cancer are addressed. Specific techniques are applied to address the issues that go with old age, while always keeping in mind to provide the patient comfort and reassurance at all times to make the adjustments easy. Usually majority of the patients are in a reconditioned state due to lack of activity, so the therapist will try to improve their level of fitness so that they will still be able to function normally in society.

Neurological conditions -- these include patients who suffered from stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and spinal cord injuries. Any condition that involves the nervous system falls under neurological conditions. Treatment of these conditions entails a lot of hard work and patience for the therapist, the patient, and the family. It may involve various aspects that have to be addressed according to the condition so that the patient will be able to function normally, independently, and get back to their usual daily activities.

Pediatric conditions - deal with children, adolescents, and infants with conditions that may have developed while they were still in their mother's womb, during delivery, or while they were growing up. Early detection of developmental delays, congenital and non-congenital disorders will greatly affect the outcome of the therapy. Conditions that are usually found in pediatric patients are developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and spina bifida. If these conditions are not detected, the child may suffer with the disorder and once they reach adulthood, it will be harder to be treated and the outcome may not be too favorable.

Cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions -- these conditions involve the heart and the lungs. Conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Myocardial Infarctions, heart attacks, and emphysema are several conditions that are treated by physical therapists. Their main goal for such patients is to develop their endurance and stamina for them to be independent and functional even after suffering from their conditions.

There are also therapy centers that provide fitness and health, and conditioning treatments for those who want to remain fit and are doing so as a preventive measure. Here are some Physical Therapy centers that may address all, if not some, of the conditions mentioned.

ALGENT HEALTH

One of the most preferred Therapy clinics; they aim to provide excellent care to their patients with a personalized touch to be able to restore them to their normal level of capacity. Specialize in the disorders of the muscle and skeletal system; they aim to assess and treat these disorders using manual therapy for the patient to regain normal function during their activities of daily living. They provide the following services:

(a) Occupational Therapy and Hand therapy -- specializes on the function of the extremity, they help in making the daily activity tasks easy such as opening jars and zipping by making devices and tools to make these tasks trouble-free

(b) Women's Health -- specializes in conditions such as pelvic floor weakness, pre natal and post partum pain and dysfunction

(c) Sports Medicine -- provides care for athletes who underwent surgery and need a specific program for their sport.

(d) Wound Care -- cleansing, debridement, and bandaging

(e) Working Conditions -- they provide programs that will help improve working conditions to prevent injury or re-injury.

(f) Back to golf - a program that focuses on developing your skills to play the game by knowing the physical mechanism and limits of your body

(g) Functional Capacity Evaluation -- a way to determine the safety and condition of the work environment of the patient who sustained an injury while working

(h) Manual Lymphatic drainage -- usually done with patients who had undergone surgery or has been impaired by cancer; this light massage will be able to help the circulation and the immune system to recover from the disease.<bio>For more information on Physical Therapists please visit our website.</bio>

About one in every 10 five-year-olds experience bed wetting. This is why bed wetting in young children is an acknowledged and accepted condition, similar to experiencing measles. That is, children develop immunity from measles and they eventually outgrow bedwetting.

Bed wetting in older children, although less talked about, is also an accepted condition. Parents even seek out the help of health professionals to find solutions to stop or reduce the bedwetting. Among teenagers, bedwetting is already embarrassing. Yet, there are recognized remedies to address this condition of some unfortunate teenagers.

Among adults, bedwetting is an issue that has become taboo. Adult bed wetters do everything so that their condition will not be known by any of their friends. Invitations from friends asking them to be house guests leave them in terror. And their bed wetting may be the major reason why they never pursue more intimate relationships with their loved ones.

Unfortunately for people suffering adult bed wetting, there is very literature available that dwell upon their enuresis problem. And many adults who have this problem refuse to seek medical help. For those who actively search for treatment, they run against a wall.

Almost all physicians, such as general practitioners and urologists, do not know how to deal with adult bed wetting. Psychologists and psychologists offer no answers. Even people who practice alternative medicine, such as acupuncturists, hypnotherapists, and homeopaths, have nothing in their sleeves to help a person overcome adult bed wetting.

Some adults who suffer bed wetting even undergo an experimental method, called the Pavlovian method, which is just two-steps behind from masochism. The psychologist Pavlov has nothing to do with this method, except that it was based on his theory of classical conditioning.

This Pavlovian method entails the adult to place himself under an extremely cold shower each time he accidentally voids his urine during his sleep. The cold shower is a form of punishment. And theoretically, if a person suffers, he will no longer wet his bed. Such method is a failure simply because there is an underlying reason for adult bedwetting

Adult bed wetting is often triggered by a certain medical disorder. A doctor should conduct tests, such as urinalysis, urine culture, and neurological examination, to determine which medical problem has led to adult bedwetting. Some of the identified problems are:

Diabetes Cancer in the bladder Infection in the urinary tract Enlargement of the prostate gland Presence of stones in the urinary tract Defects in the nervous system, particularly the central nervous system

If the above medical problems are addressed or alleviated, the adult bedwetting can be ultimately stopped. In the meantime, the adult may turn to medications that will reduce the frequency of bed wetting. <bio>For more information on Bed Wetting, visit http://www.bed-wetting.info Great articles and info for both young and adult bed wetting. </bio>

Living with the effects of Attention Deficit Disorder can be overwhelming and enormously demanding. Everyday activities that are barely noticed by other people take on a whole new set of challenges when you have Attention Deficit Disorder. The impact on one's daily life can really only be understood by those who have also experienced it. For this reason, many who suffer from this condition often find participation in an Attention Deficit Disorder Support Group to be enormously helpful.

Those who have studied Attention Deficit Disorder are unclear as to its origin but are in agreement that it is most likely a neurological condition; the effects of which are manifested in inattentiveness, hyperactivity, or in some cases, a combination of both. Because of the prevalence of research being conducted, Attention Deficit Disorder has been brought to light in the last decade resulting in more and more diagnoses. Along with behavioral therapy, and in most cases, medical treatment, patients often find support through an Attention Deficit Disorder Support Group to be an integral part of their treatment.

For many, an Attention Deficit Disorder Support Group means the chance to be with people who understand. For young people especially -- who are at the age when fitting in is of paramount concern -- it can be a tremendous relief to be in a room where they are just like everyone else.

For adults -- many of whom suffered through childhood before Attention Deficit Disorder was discovered -- the opportunity to interact with those who face similar challenges can be a rewarding experience. Many of these adults are left with feelings of insecurity, having been misdiagnosed, misunderstood, and untreated for most of their lives. An Attention Deficit Disorder Support Group allows them the chance to unleash these feelings of inadequacy in a safe and supportive environment.

Attention Deficit Disorder can affect every area of a sufferer's life, including their social interaction. Because of certain behaviors and challenges associated with the disorder many who suffer from it choose to isolate themselves rather than face social rejection. The Attention Deficit Disorder Support Group can mean a whole new world for Attention Deficit Disorder patients.

For information regarding Attention Deficit Disorder Support Groups the Internet can be an unrivaled resource. Look for support groups online; many will also have information about groups that meet in your local area. Additionally, any medical professional who treats Attention Deficit Disorder will commonly have information about Attention Deficit Disorder Support Groups.

Through medical treatment, emotional health, and a thriving Attention Deficit Disorder Support Group, sufferers of this disorder need no longer suffer alone. <bio>For easy to understand, in depth information about attention deficit disorder visit our ezGuide 2 http://attentiondeficitdisorder.ezguide2.com </bio>

Attention Deficit Disorder is a chronic neurological disorder, which is predominantly diagnosed in children. Statistics estimates that 2-5 % of the population is affected by ADD, considering the rare possibility for cases of Adult ADD. ADD is one of the disturbing pediatric disorders in the United States, since 5 million are affected by this disorder. Attention deficit disorder is the old name of the disease with characteristic symptoms of hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity, which is later renamed as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AD HD). The disorder is classified into three distinct subtypes, ADHD predominantly combined type, ADHD predominantly inattentive type and ADHD predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type, on the basis of the pronounced characteristic symptom.

Children with ADD show distractibility, forgetfulness, impulse control, and disorganization. It is often misdiagnosed as any learning disability disease, however, pervasive symptoms for six months must be suspected. Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders describe particular symptoms for the children belonging to each type of ADD. The inattentive type shows the symptom such as careless mistakes due to inattention, trouble in playing games that require concentration, failure to follow instructions, avoiding school projects and seminars, forgetfulness, distractibility and recurring losses. The hyperactivity-impulsive type shows symptoms such as restlessness, difficulty in staying seated, wanting to run and climb all the time, answering before a question has been completed, and excessive speech. The combined type will exhibit both types of symptoms.

Usually, children with ADD will have certain learning disabilities, anxiety, depression, low thyroid, and tendency to violate rules and regulations. It is quite interesting that the features of gifted children are often misinterpreted as symptoms of ADD. In adults, ADD is characteristic with symptoms such as low esteem, procrastination, boredom, anxiety, depression, mood swings, relationship problems, forgetfulness, restlessness, sleep problems, and addiction.

Treatments for ADD are not effective to provide a complete cure, to date, since the exact cause of the disease is not identified. The only known fact is that the disease is brought on because of some sort of neurological problem. It is suspected that impairment to the neurotransmitters can be the possible cause. Physicians prescribe several medications, which help the ADD patients to control their symptoms effectively. The simulative medications include methylphenidate, dextroamphetamine, and benzphetamine. The brand names such as Ritalin and Adderall are some of the widely accepted drugs for ADD treatment. The psychotherapies such as behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, relaxation therapy and neurofeedback are suggested to improve the social behavior of ADD patients. In addition, nutritional supplements such as zinc, amino acids, and fatty acids such as Omega 3, are recommended to enhance the condition of ADD patients. <bio>Jason Rickard is the owner of Your Favourite Shop - http://www.yourfavouriteshop.com - Offering White Noise and Relaxation CDs - Visit Hapa Health - http://www.hapahapa.com for more articles. </bio>

You are going about your day and suddenly you get the urge to move your leg. You can't control it, it will move regardless of what you do. Afterward, the movement gives you a weird feeling of relief. What in the world is this?

Or, you are in bed sleeping at night and you wake up when your legs jerk quickly. Startled, it takes you a few minutes to fall back asleep. What in the world was that?

Restless Leg Syndrome Explained

If these situations sound like something that has happened to you, you might be one of the millions of Americans who suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome. Restless leg syndrome, also referred to as RLS, or Wittmaack-Ekbom's syndrome, is an uncomfortable and widely misunderstood and misdiagnosed condition, thought to be caused by a neurological disorder.

Understanding what causes restless leg syndrome is a feat that doctors haven't quite mastered yet. Reasons for what causes restless leg syndrome runs the gamut from dehydration, a brain disorder, some forms of medications, stimulants like caffeine or the consumption of some fats and carbohydrates.

Doctors consider there to be two types of Restless Leg Syndrome. Primary Restless Leg Syndrome comes from genetics and will generally last throughout your life. Secondary Restless Leg Syndrome comes from non-hereditary sources like medications and stimulants.

How to Treat Restless Leg Syndrome

Because the exact reasons for what causes Restless Leg Syndrome isn't known for sure, the methods to treating the condition will vary from person-to-person.

If you think you have Secondary Restless Leg Syndrome resulting from some medication you are taking, ask your doctor if you can discontinue using the medication to see if it helps.
Autism is a condition that can be treated, this is the prime reason why in suspected autism cases it is best that the diagnose be made earlier than later, it must be pointed out however that autistic behavior is not a frequent thing among health communities and families, so this should not be a major concern for parents. Nevertheless it is always recommended to use experts to establish some kind of diagnosis as regards to behavioral abnormalities.

One of the many essential features concerned with children of autistic disorder is their tendency to create odd interests and poor attention and focus. Additionally, they also deficit in social interaction. Most authorities in this subject affirm that these features clearly indicate autistic factors yet they admit that these are not enough to diagnose autism among children younger than 3 years old.

Moreover, the inconsistency of symptom manifestation often hampers the proper diagnosis of autism more than the abnormality itself. There are virtually lots of factors affecting this inconsistency.

Autism can also be correlated with other conditions such as mental retardation, childhood psychoses, Asperger disorder and a couple of other neurological disorders.

Often, diagnosis begins through these three determining factors. Keep in mind though that evaluation of these three stages would not suffice the data so as to conclude that a child truly has autistic features.

Physical and neurological examinations Examination of medical history including those that manifest through relatives. This also consists of birth history and developmental conditions, and Medical tests to help rule out other diseases

Diagnostic criteria are used to formally determine if a child is truly subjected to autistic features. Comprehensive diagnosis can be done through routine developmental screening which concerns mostly all developmental features that are absent or deficient with autistic children.

After the recognition of these factors, the child may be given audiologic evaluation, screening test for autism and blood lead test.

During evaluation it is vital that the children are diagnosed by an experienced clinician. He must be well-learned with concerns pertaining to psychology and pediatrics.

For an initial evaluation, you as a parent can do the following:

Observation on social impairment which manifests through the following: a. impairment of non-verbal interaction b. weak ability to build peer relationship as observed during different developmental stages c. lack of emotional and social reciprocity which is prone to isolation

Observation on communicational impairment which manifests through the following: a.delay or lack of development in language facilities, more specifically the spoken language b.lack of social plays suitable for each developmental stage c.inability to maintain social conversation d.idiosyncratic language or marked repetitive use of words

Noticeable patterns of activities, behaviors and interests manifested through the following: a.continuous preoccupation with specific parts of an object b.motor mannerism c.limited patterns of interests d.observance of rituals or non-functional habits

Due of course to the difficulty of diagnosing autistic features, it is best to subject the child to professional evaluation. It is not as easy though as with other diseases so be patient with findings means for efficient and effective diagnosis. <bio>Jonathan Mayheart has been writing and publishing his articles on the internet for a few months, he currently writes about health, mental problems and their cultural and personal effects at http://www.autism.advice-tips.com/ </bio>
