When you recognise someone as being successful in what they do how do you define what it is that makes them such a good performer? If you have one of these people in your organization then you will want to replicate their way of doing things and instill this in others. NLP models what the successful person is doing. It defines very clearly what they are doing, how they do it and the thought patterns that they put into it.

For the top performer you want to copy there is a problem however. They may not know exactly what it is they are doing. They operate at a high level automatically. Neuro linguistic programming has a number of tools and devices to find out what makes one person so good at their job.

Modelling to find Excellence

Having found a model you need to work out what they are doing differently. You need to look at what they do. That is the physical side of things such as posture, timekeeping and body language.

You then need to find out from them what they are thinking and saying to themselves when they are doing their job. To find this out you will need to ask searching questions. NLP provides a large range of tools for this. IT must be said however that there is quite a large range of differing practices and methods available from different proponents of neuro linguistic programming.

The hardest part to define is the behaviour they have that is intuitive to them. They do not know exactly how they do their job so well. They will have many inbuilt beliefs and values that they use on autopilot and hardly know they are using. Their whole person will be a mixture of how they have developed over years and how they themselves have modified their own behaviour. A good NLP person will be able to discover these ingrained behaviours, beliefs and values..

Helping Others Improve Their Performance

Once you have defined your successful model than you can concentrate replicating this in other people. This can be through training programs or close working with the successful person.

The training has to be in 2 parts to achieve good results. The first part is the seen behaviour and language. You can simply observe what the successful person is doing. A good sales person will always ask for the order. There are no ifs and buts about this. It is what a salesman does as part of his job. If another salesman doesn't ask for the order every time then they know how to change their behaviour. Start asking every time.

The second part of the training is to improve the unseen behaviour. Its not just asking for the order but the way you do it. This involves the whole person. Their character, emotions and inner mindset. To train in this area is where NLP Modelling has its main focus. You can change the crooked thinking that someone has and their attitude to their job performance through neuro linguistic programming.

So to use NLP modeling you need to find your model and replicate it through study and then training others.<bio>John Taylor is a Master NLP Practitioner, he writes extensively on the topic of Neuro Linguistic Programming on his "Talk About NLP" blog and in his "NLP in 30 Days</bio>

NLP gives a person the opportunity to change their life for the better. I fact it offers a path to excellence in areas of your life that you may feel would be impossible. The main focus of neuro linguistic programming is to improve your life to the point that you achieve your life aims. You will not only just get to the finishing line but excel in the process and be first past the winning line.

We all live our lives wanting to do well at work and in our relationships and NLP helps you discover how you can achieve this by focusing on your mind and finding new ways of doing things. You can change your behaviours and attitudes by applying the procedures of neuro linguistic programming.

Excellence at work

You may be on a career path that you are happy with but want you to improve to reach your professional goals. NLP can use your mind and in particular the language structures of your mind to change your work situation. It can help you better your own performance. More than this you can tackle things like difficult relationships and negotiating skills and achieve new levels of performance.

Excellence in Sports

You can be sure that many of the 2008 Olympic competitors have used NLP to get to the top of their chosen event. It is recognized as an almost standard technique to help athletes envision their success in their races and events. They can see themselves winning their event even before they have started the race.

If you know you are going to lose, you have just lost. So it is vital to remove this negative thinking and change mental attitudes. NLP gives great confidence to sportsmen and sportswomen in their chosen sport helping them over perform.

Excellence in Personal Development

There are so many areas in your personal development that can be helped through neuro linguistic programming. You can rid yourself of negative emotions and fears and replace them with positive and confident feelings towards life and all its challenges. You can stop your potential being limited by the input of others by changing the ingrained thoughts and actions through the use of NLP.

You can also tackle specific wants and needs in life such as weight loss and phobias.

Excellence as a Way of Life

NLP promotes a change in how you look at life and how you are in life. The surprising thing is that the resources you need to make these changes are seen as being within the individual. The external help comes from NLP practitioners who can help and direct the individual to find these internal resources. The helpers can assist a person in finding out where their inner thoughts and language are going wrong. These can be replaced by more positive and helpful mind messages that bring change and success in life.

Neuro Linguistic Programming can literally change a life from being ordinary to being excellent. For people who are going nowhere in their life it can change it for the better permanently in a very short time<bio>John Taylor is a Master NLP Practitioner, he writes extensively on the topic of Neuro Linguistic Programming on his "Talk About NLP" blog and in his "NLP in 30 Days</bio>

Language is central to everything in neuro linguistic programming. What you say and how you say it can change the way you relate to others. If there are people who you meet with at work or socially that you find difficult to get on with then you can use the techniques of NLP to get through these obstacles.

According to NLP the most important part of communication is to take responsibility for your own communication. You must make sure that you say clearly what you mean. You can then check that the words have been understood by the listener in the way you meant. It is by the same token important to be sure that you have understood what is being said to you

When you have problems with people in your communication NLP can structure things so that you can get your message over better and be a better manager too. One thing you need to consider early on is that you might be the problem rather than the other person. Neuro linguistic programming can show you where you have wrong thinking and beliefs about your own self. It can give you clear strategies to change the thinking in your brain and the words that you say.

You need to understand that the other person and build up a rapport with them. Do not make assumptions about them that you cannot validate. You need to establish an initial way of relating to each other. You will then be able to see what the other person's standpoint is and how they think. You can then look at building on this rapport with clear and decisive communication -- and this works both ways.

Practice makes perfect and you need to use NLP review techniques to get better over time at communication. You will find that some methods work very well for you and others will simply not fit in with your character and style. The important thing is not to get so lost in all the NLP details that you forget to communicate.

Understanding where others are coming from

You need to acknowledge the worlds people come from. They will have different education, upbringing and cultural backgrounds. They will also have grown up in different environments. So it is no wonder that you need to work at your communication. You also have your own background that comes with all its own idiosyncrasies.

NLP uses tools and patterns of language to help you get through all the differences and misunderstandings. When you communicate you are not only speaking and hearing words. You use all your senses to give and hear what you are saying. So you have visual information as well as auditory input to take in. You can use NLP to do a better job of filtering the mixture of messages. Now you can also model your own speech and output on people who have better communication skills. You can use borrowed techniques to improve your own communication.<bio>John Taylor is a Master NLP Practitioner, he writes extensively on the topic of Neuro Linguistic Programming on his "Talk About NLP" blog and in his "NLP in 30 Days</bio>

We all negotiate every day. In business sales the negotiation is a core skill for anyone who has to purchase and sell products and services. The familiar sales rep model does in fact hold plenty of relevant instruction for how to negotiate well but by using the principles of NLP you can be quite clearer about how you are negotiating and how you can get to a satisfactory end result. There are a number of simple techniques that are used with neuro linguistic programming that help you ensure that you are successful in business.

Winners and Losers

The classic idea of a win - win situation is almost inherent in the way you negotiate. NLP looks at the negotiation process from three points of view. The first is your own viewpoint and how you see the result of the process. You need to have clarity about what would be a successful outcome. You also need to set boundaries set on where you are prepared to move to and where you are not.

The second viewpoint is that of the other party in the negotiation. You need to gain both knowledge and feeling about the position they are in and the sort of outcome they are looking for. Sometimes your projected outcome will be very compatible with the other persons. Other time they will not be close at all and you will need all your negotiating skills to effect a mutually agreeable deal.

The third viewpoint is to try and look at your deal or arrangement from a completely objective standpoint. This can be very difficult where strong emotions are involved. You need to see from the outside looking in whether the hoped for end result works for both parties and ends up with achieving the desired end result.

Create a Great End Result Before you Start

Using NLP you can create in your mind an end result that you are completely happy with and works for both parties. NLP will help you focus on what you really want rather than what you think you want. Most times there is one main objective that ou are striving to achieve and you need to be absolutely sure you know what this is. If you do not know for sure what your goal is you will not hit it and you will come away from the negotiating with the wrong outcome and bad feeling.

Relationships and NLP Negotiating

You need to be in some sort of relationship with the other person to negotiate with them. If your meeting is a one time event this is very difficult. In most situations you will have an ongoing relationship established and can build rapport with the other person. You can use straight talking and honest open dialogue as well as positive body language to both relate well to them and achieve your preferred outcome to the negotiations.

Neuro linguistic programming uses a whole range of tools to achieve a successful negotiation. These tools can be learnt and practiced to help you get better results for both you and the other person.<bio>John Taylor is a Master NLP Practitioner, he writes extensively on the topic of Neuro Linguistic Programming on his "Talk About NLP" blog and in his "NLP in 30 Days</bio>

Trance in Neuro Linguistic Programming

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is a great method of creating personal change, either in ourselves or in a client if we are a coach, therapist, counselor or other change worker.

As a master practitioner and trainer of neuro linguistic programming and a certified hypnotist, I use both NLP and hypnosis to help clients. So what is the relationship between the two?

The fact is that NLP and hypnosis are very closely linked. Many hypnotists use standard NLP patterns when working with a client in trance. In addition, any NLP exercise is likely to involve the client focusing their attention inward and as such is likely to induce a trance state.

However there is a more subtle, and therefore more interesting link, between NLP and hypnosis when dealing with clients who have problems (rather than clients who simply want to focus on self-improvement). The fact is that any problem we face is a form of "trance". By problem I do not mean that we need to buy milk, or that we need to pay our rent, rather I mean a pattern of behavior that repeats itself seemingly outside our conscious control.

Suppose a client smokes cigarettes. He doesn't want to smoke. He wants to stop smoking. Yet he walks into the store and buys a pack of cigarettes. He sits in his car and opens the pack, pulls out a cigarette, puts it into his mouth, lights a match, lights the cigarette, and inhales. How is this possible when he doesn't want to smoke?

The answer is that he goes into a trance. The actions leading him to buy the cigarettes, or to light and smoke a cigarette, are performed by his unconscious mind, even if his conscious mind is screaming "stop it!" while he is doing it.

So how do we use this information? Firstly it tells us that there is likely little point in arguing with his rational conscious mind. That part of him already knows he shouldn't smoke. We can prove in any and every way possible the dangers and health risks, the costs both financial and social of smoking. It will do absolutely no good.

Of course, if the client comes for hypnosis, then we can induce trance and present arguments and convince the unconscious mind directly.

Otherwise we have to find another way of breaking the "smoking trance". One way of doing this is to induce a "non smoking trance" to counteract the "smoking trance" they already have. There are undoubtedly many great reasons the client has for wanting to stop smoking. We can discover these benefits by asking "What will you gain by being a non-smoker? How will your life be different?" Let's take an example:

"What will you gain by being a non-smoker?" "I will be healthier" "And when you are healthier, how will your life be different?" "I will be able to play soccer with my son" "And how will that be?" "That will be fantastic! I'll be able to run round the park with him, I remember playing ball with my father=85"

As the positive implications of the change are explored, the client enters into a positive experience, in this case an age regression to when he was young. This is a form of trance. So now we have two trances, the "smoking trance" and the "playing soccer with my son" trance. Which is the bigger trance? It is time to find out.

"That's right. You'll be able to play soccer with your son. That will be fantastic! Just like when you played ball with your dad. And as you feel that, and you think about seeing the cigarettes in the store, how do you feel?" "Well, I wouldn't buy them=85"

Call it battling trances. This is the key to personal change. <bio>Shawn Carson is a certified hypnotist and http://www.nlptrainingnewyork.com/what-is-nlp.php NLP Master Practitioner and http://www.nlptrainingnewyork.com/training.php Trainer.
You can break Accelerated Learning down to three basic elements. The first is emotional or state control, secondly there is self beliefs and thirdly the tools and techniques. Often accelerated learning concentrates on tools and techniques. To get results with the tools and techniques you need to the negative emotions and limiting beliefs. Focusing on the first of these elements, this article will demonstrate how Neuro Linguistic Programming can make a great difference to your learning ability.

Not everyone had a useful experience of schooling and may be left with emotional baggage. Being in the perfect state for learning can be obstructed by this point.

Some school systems work with a narrow range of learning styles. If this did not suit you at the time you might be left with some emotional baggage from those days. Consider at the age of nine being embarrassed in front of teachers and the class about reading. The emotional baggage may show up in later years as a fear of giving talks, going on courses or reading new books.

Much of school work has a right and a wrong answer. Not following the teacher labels you as wrong and this might have left an emotional charge. Being called names by peers, sometimes even teachers may have affected you significantly. When improving study skills it is vital to let go of these emotional charges.

Being too excited, energised or enthused to concentrate on the job at hand can also be an challenge.

Studying sometimes involves a calm, focused concentration albeit in some circumstances a high energy state might be required. For example practicing stage routines with your rock band would need a completely different state to writing a politics essay. Getting the right state for the situation is important.

The right state for learning is important and Neuro Linguistic Programming has lots of tools to help. You can let go of unwanted emotions, hype yourself up or calm yourself down. Whatever is needed for the right study state there are Neuro Linguistic Programming tools that can help get you there. Whether that is high energy or calm concentration.

Using Anchoring, an NLP tool you can build the ideal learning state for any specific subject and access it any time you want. Modelling and how you use your mind is what NLP is about. Using this methodology NLP will allow you to create a system process that is individual to you and that you can use to achieve things far quicker than before. NLP Training Courses are geared to give you the system to be able to do this.

Going on an NLP Practitioner Course will make a big difference to your study skills. Once you have dealt with unwanted emotions NLP will show you how to change limiting beliefs as well as how you process information the most efficiently. From doing this you will be studying more efficiently regardless of the huge number of accelerated learning tools you will also study on a good NLP Practitioner Course. <bio>Find out more about NLP Training Courses and Accelerated Learning at http://www.theNLPcompany.com </bio>

Before further discussion, let's analyze the 3 words (Neuro, Linguistic and Programming) to provide you with a glimpse of what NLP is about:

Neuro: refers to the human nervous system that includes the brain and the five senses controlled by the brain.

Linguistic: refers to the verbal and the non-verbal languages that we use to communicate with others and with ourselves (inner-conversation)

Programming: the process of structuring or engineering our linguistic or neurological systems, in the context of NLP, to achieve a particular result.

NLP is a quite complex concept but its fundamentals are very easy to absorb. There are four vital fundamentals to NLP which will be discussed later in this article. These four fundamentals can be considered as steps towards a more better you. NLP has been applied in a diverse range of fields including but not exclusive to:

Business
Education
Sports
Healthcare
Psychology
Sales and Marketing
Coaching etc.

People have been using NLP to remove many mental blocks that were acting as hurdles to their potential. To a large extent, what you achieve using NLP depends upon your frame of mind. However, in general, a person achieves the following common advantages from using NLP:

- Controlling the state of mind.
- Helping others to know and to get what they really want.
- Developing confidence and improving communication skills.
- Removing obstacles in your personal or professional life.

The fundamentals, or rather steps, of NLP are fairly simple in comparison with the overall concept of NLP. At the same time, these steps are quite powerful as they are designed after in-depth analysis of human mental patterns, various behavioral mechanisms, goal setting and achieving strategies. The human brain is the most complex machine on the face of the earth. We can never exploit it 100% but using NLP, we can at least make use of its potential power.

Step 1:

Knowing What You Want -- This is the first step or fundamental of NLP; you must know exactly what you want. If you don't have any clear picture of your goal, then it's unlikely that you'll achieve it. There's a well know phrase "If you don't know where you're going, you'll end up somehwere else" which says a lot about the lack of clearly defined goals. If you know what you want, you will be able to structure your plan before moving towards your goal.

Step 2:

Taking Action - When you know what you want, you can take the appropriate action. Put your all focus towards your actions that you take to achieve your goal. In the above example, this would be the eqivalent of identifying the destination on a map, deciding the best means of travel and then planning a suitable route.

Step 3:

Carefully monitoring the outcome of your actions - For example, you know your destination, you've planned your route and you've decided to travel on your motorcycle. But when travelling in an unfamliar part of the country you need to frequently check that you are following the correct route by comparing your location with your map. It's important that you make sure that you are travelling in the right direction and you are on schedule to arrive at your destination on time.

Step 4:

Adjust what you are doing -- It might surprise you to know that an airplane spends approximately 95% of its flight off its exact course. It the job of the pilot to make small adjustments in altitude and heading to correct for the prevailing weather conditions. Similarly, when we are striving to achieve a specific goal it's important that we monitor progress and take corrective action from time to time to keep on track. This is called behavioral flexibility. We all need to be flexible enough to change what choices we make and actions we take to achieve our goals.<bio>John Taylor is a Master NLP Practitioner and has worked with many individuals, teams and organisations to help them to make lasting and enduring changes.
So what is this NLP stuff, I guess your thinking? Well, it stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. And now your thinking 'Neuro Linguistic.. what?' right?

Okay to me, to put it simply, it's how through our language (linguistic) we can change (programming) how our mind and body (neurology) works. From reproducing excellence, to clearing out fears, limiting beliefs, behaviours and in turn actually acquiring the feelings, behaviours and positive mind-sets we want. When we came to earth we weren't given a manual on how our brains worked, but I like to think of NLP as that manual.

So let's break this down a little:

Neuro: The nervous system (the mind), through which we experience our life via the five senses:

• Our Sight
• Our Hearing
• Our Touch
• Our Smell
• Our Taste

Linguistic: Our Language and other nonverbal communication systems- through the internal images we hold in our mind. For example how you perceive the world around you. I.e. is the glass of water half full or half empty? It's whatever you believe, right?

Programming: The ability to discover and utilize the programs that we run inside ourselves- such as beliefs, feelings and behaviours to achieve our specific and desired outcomes in life.

Okay to put it simply, changing your mind therefore your results.

So where did it come from?

NLP was created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the early 1970's. Richard and John met at the University of California in Santa Cruz. Richard was a student at the university, he was a mathematician, computer expert and therapist. Whereas John was a language professor at the University.

Together they began to study experts in field of human change and development, where they began to uncover some interesting patterns in renowned therapists in America. When studying and modelling the therapist Virginia Satir for example (a very successful family therapist in Palo Alto, California) they discovered that she had the ability to affect and change her clients behaviour by being very specific. A little later, Gregory Bateson told them of a brilliant hypnotist in Arizona who would get his results utilising hypnosis and artfully vague language patterns. This guy was called Milton Erickson, he was a medical doctor and he took hypnosis from the stage to the therapy.

The successes that Bandler and Grinder discovered led to the Meta Model (Satir's process) and Milton Model (Ericksons process) being created. The Meta Model is very specific and the Milton Model is vague and ambiguous. These language patterns would get results in minutes and hours rather than the psychotherapist's months and years.

This was the start of Neuro Linguistic Programming. Through the experimentation of their discoveries and using the techniques which they modelled from people who got great results, they created processes of learning.

John and Richard studied the strategies of people who were the very best in their field, which in NLP we call Modelling. Once they organised these techniques, they taught their students to replicate them and used them with their own clients. Their students would then be able to install the behavioral changes using these techniques inside themselves.

Through this attitude of this experimentation and learning NLP has been expanded throughout the years. From the original training of eight, there are now many experienced and effective NLP trainers throughout the world.

NLP begins to give us the tools for personal change so that we live the life we truly deserve. Whether that be in our health, relationships or careers.

In addition to therapy, NLP has been used successfully in sales, business, education and many other vocations and to me that's a brief history of NLP to date.

Your Friend,
Joseph Clough<bio>Joseph Clough, Celebrity Mind Coach, NLP and Hypnosis trainer, coach and author. http://www.josephclough.com http://www.josephcloughtrainings.co.uk http://www.empoweringsounds.com No.1 Resource for Hypnosis CD's and MP3 donwloads by Joseph Clough</bio>

If you ask yourself "what stops me from getting whatever I want from life?" you may find that the answer you give yourself is very revealing.

Was your answer: your partner, your parents, not enough money, not enough time, not enough love, bad luck or simply fate? All of these answers are basically saying that the reason you are not more successful or more fulfilled in one or many areas of yourself, is due to circumstances outside of your control.

What NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming teaches us is that in order to influence our external world we have to understand how our thinking affects our internal world, ie our unconscious. By understanding this we can then bring the circumstances within our control and change them.

Our conscious mind actually holds very little information at any one time, and research has shown that we can hold only 7 plus or minus 2 chunks of information in our conscious mind at any one time. Which, as you can appreciate, isn't a whole lot of data.

Meanwhile our unconscious can receive billions of pieces of external information at any one time and process them with no effort. The unconscious mind is awake even when we are asleep and continually processing information.

From this we can see that what we tell our unconscious is of vital importance, as whatever we tell it to do - it will do. But what are we telling our unconscious to do?

If you say to yourself - "I deserve to be rich", but the programs running in your unconscious mind, which have evolved as you have grown up respond with " you - you loser, like that's ever going to happen, you never succeed at anything" you aren't going to get very far along the road to riches. Therefore in order to progress these programs need to be changed.

It is never going to be enough to listen to something that tells you 'what' to do - you need something that tells you 'how' to do something. This is where NLP comes into its own, as it not only tells you, but it shows you how to achieve whatever you want from life and how you can achieve your goals. It is practical information that often marks the difference between what succeeds and what fails.

NLP stops you running the same old programs in your mind and getting caught in a loop of failure. Your conscious mind can tell you a million times that you need to shape up and achieve success but this just won't mean anything until your unconscious mind comes on board. Once the two are aligned, the world is your oyster and success in any area of your life - whether it be money, work, business, relationships, you name it - can be achieved. NLP is a fascinating subject and the more you learn the more you want to know, but more than this it offer a practical blueprint for change. Whatever you want, the only path to achieving it is to change, not the external circumstances, but yourself. The rest then falls into place. <bio>Alison Wood Change Your Life With NLP http://eden2003.successnlp.hop.clickbank.net </bio>

NLP neuro linguistic programming procrastination overcoming self improvement personal development hypnosis

Procrastination is often discussed as one of the major barriers to self improvement. By self improvement we mean any actions that we take, including changing our behaviors, or beliefs, or developing new skills or resources, which could be called personal development.

Neuro linguistic programming or NLP offers powerful tools to help us make the changes we want in our lives. Because procrastination is an internal, almost unconscious process, it responds very well to the tools of nlp which are based on psychological principles.

Let's spend a moment examining the structure of procrastination using nlp tools. NLP states that we all have an individual experience of reality based upon our own unique map of the world. We each have unique beliefs, values, memories, experiences, skills, and sensory preferences, ie that some people prefer to see things, some to hear things, some to feel, some to taste or smell.

If this is true then how can we yalk of something like procrastination? Doesn't it have to be different for everyone? The answer in neuro linguistic programming terms is yes, it is different as to details. However, the behaviors arising as a result are similar (ie a failure to get things done that we want to do). Also the internal "structure" of procrastination is often similar from person to person. What do we mean by that? We mean that if we apply NLP Modeling to procrastination we will see a similar "strategy" being used to avoid doing things. The details of the strategy might vary but the pattern is the same. It goes something like this:

=95 Think of something you have to do (but don't really want to do). Say it's paying your bills. Maybe you see a picture or a movie of an untidy pile of bills, or maybe its an internal dialogue or voice that says "sigh, have to do the bills" =95Notice how you feel about the thought of doing it. It maybe something like "pay the bills, ugh"!

=95 Now think of a lots of things you could be doing right now. These may vary from the irrelevant, to the mildly pleasant, to the downright fun. Again maybe you see pictures or movies of these things spread out in front of you, or hear a seductive internal voice saying "oh I should balance my checkbook first, hmmm why don't I just watch a little TV first, ahhh, the weather is so nice shame to waste it, let's go for a walk".

=95 Pick one of the things, say the walk in the park (after all it is a beautiful day). Make that picture big and bright and close. Make it really attractive.

=95 Go for a walk in the park (don't pay the bills).

Sound familiar? There are likely several elements that make the "have to" task undesirable. These may include some or all of the following:

=95 An unattractive picture of the task. It may be untidy. It may be incomplete, with no "end in sight" =95 An unpleasant feeling associated with the thought of the task. =95 An unpleasant inner voice complaining about the task =95 No sense of accomplishment that will come when the task is complete.

Try this NLP thought experiment for overcoming procrastination:

=95 Imagine the task you want to do. Say paying the bills. What picture comes to mind? Make the picture more attractive by changing it. Examples of ways it could be changed are to move it directly in front of you, rather than seeing an untidy pile or bills scattered throughout your house, separate the bills in your mind's eye until you can see each one separately and neatly organized. Experiment to find out what looks good.

=95 Notice any feelings you have now. Maybe they are not as bad as they were. If there are still negative feelings notice where they are. Your stomach? Your chest? Change them, turn them into a tingle in your fingers and toes for example.

=95 Notice what your internal dialogue is saying. If it is negative "pay the bills, ugh", change the voice to a seductive "it will be just marvelous when this is done, I will have the rest of the day free".

=95 Step into the experience of the task but at the end, see yourself mailing the bills and step into that experience feel yourself dropping the bills into the mailbox. Hear the mail-box close. Feel how great that feels! Say "fantastic another job done!".

NLP helps people overcome procrastination and other issues. The exercises are most effective when they are tailored to how the individual experiences reality, and when you have someone to guide you through the exercises. <bio>Shawn Carson is director of http://www.nlptrainingnewyork.com/ International Center for Positive Change and Hypnosis in New York City, offering training in http://www.nlptrainingnewyork.com/what-is-nlp.php neuro linguistic programming and hypnosis, http://www.nlptrainingnewyork.com/coaching.php coaching, one on one change work for personal change, self improvement, weight loss, smoking, goal setting and achievement </bio>

Looking for self improvement ideas? Interested in personal development? NLP offers a straightforward way to make those changes and become more resourceful individuals.

Neuro Linguistic Programming provides us with self improvement tools to enhance our own personal development, to be in control of our inner states, and to make the most positive choices and decisions in our lives.

"To be or not to be". Even Shakespeare realized that having a choice is so important to the individual. Having the ability to weigh up the options, make a judgment and then make a selection empowers us and gives us control in the way we live.

Think of the millions of decisions we each make everyday. The easy choices of what clothes to wear, cash or charge, eat in or take away, the bigger decisions, Ford or Honda, Republican or Democrat, East or West Coast, and yet we are not always aware of one of the most important and life changing choices we can each make every day.

I remember when I first moved here to New York City from London, I was overwhelmed by the choices I was being asked to make=85and that was just ordering breakfast at the local diner. Having decided I wanted a fried egg with toast, the waitress proceeded to rattle off the list of ways my eggs could cooked, =85over easy, over well, sunny side up etc etc. Once that matter was settled we moved on the decision about the toast=85what kind of bread I wanted, whole wheat, white, rye=85and whether I wanted it buttered or not. By the end of ordering what I considered to be a fairly standard meal, I had already made a large number of decisions. Now, these were hardly life altering choices, but just goes to demonstrate that our lives are full of options and that most of us are accomplished decision makers. Even in the areas of lifestyle, political affiliations, or religious choice we make the decisions that shape our lives with thought and consideration.

Yet how much thought and consideration do we put into the choice of how and what we choose to think about our inner state, our emotions and reactions to events. How frequently do you, or those around you, complain that "he/she's making me feel=85.. angry, mad, unloved" etc.

Before I learned about NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) I didn't realize that I had the ability to make one of the most fundamental and important choices in my life. I was certainly one to say things just like that. "You're making me so angry" was one of my stock phrases and at the time I really believed that the other person's behavior was making me furious. I was all too keen to blame someone else for the way I was reacting or feeling.

Now it is not the emotion of anger that I want to discuss here, it has its place in the wide range of emotions needed to live a rounded life. It is the "you're making me" part of the phrase that we are discussing. Just by saying those words I was giving control of my emotions to the other person. How can another person's behavior "make" me do or feel anything? If I am to believe that I am in control of my own mind, that there is no one living inside my head but me, and that it is my own thoughts that drive my emotions and behavior, then I must be the one who is making myself angry.

In NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) this means living at "Cause" rather than "Effect", to choose to be at the `action' position rather than reacting to other peoples' behavior or choices. Being at "Cause" means, very simply, in this example:

=95 having the ability to choose what is best for me =95 controlling my own internal state or emotion =95 taking responsibility for my emotions and behavior =95 creating more resourceful options

as opposed to being at "effect":

=95 reacting to others behaviors or emotions =95 giving control to someone else =95 being led rather than taking the lead =95 limiting my choices

Being at Cause places me in a more resourceful state, one where I can opt to take responsibility for my choices rather than act in response to others. We pride ourselves that we live in a free democracy, where we have a choice as to who to vote for, the news channel we watch, or the music we listen to. Now, with NLP and the idea of "cause and effect" I am able to choose to be in control of my reactions, of my inner state and my emotions. I can truly choose "to be or not to be". <bio>Sarah Carson Director of the International Center for Positive Psychology and Hypnosis http://www.nlptrainingnewyork.com </bio>

So the concepts behind NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) sound interesting to you and you're wondering where to get started with implementing such strategies. You will probably face the question as to whether it might be beneficial to your life and business to hire an NLP coach. Each year there are thousands of people who benefit from scientifically based coaching programs, and a coach can help you design a specific plan of action using proven techniques. Sure you might be able to pull together a plan on your own, but this article will share how a coach might have the expertise and experience to help you shape your future and live life more fully, and right now.

Coaching has become a widely popular service and is familiar both to big business through corporate coaches and to television audiences through the popular show "Starting Over". Coaches who utilize NLP concepts believe every person has the potential and ability to realize their dreams. An NLP coach can help you understand what you want from your life and what you will do to get it. A coach can help you clarify your goals and remain focused until you achieve them. While you build your confidence, improve your skills and achieve your goals a coach can guide, encourage and instruct using proven neuro-linguistic practices.

An NLP coach isn't going to do the work for you, but will help you design a plan to achieve your own success. As you already can guess, a professional coach is likely to have an arsenal of proven techniques, tested and perfected through their own practice. Aside from that, a coach is going to have the advantage of being a neutral third party who has no emotional attachment to your past failures or successes. The observations of a coach are more likely to be clear, and the insights could possibly be more accurate, because they are in a position to view your behaviors more objectively than you, a friend or a member of your family could ever do. A coach is also more likely to be up on the latest techniques and advancements in NLP practices. All of these advantages can be combined to help you fully realize your potential, achieve higher levels of personal effectiveness and self mastery.

Since the premise behind NLP technique is that you can recreate success by doing what the successful people do, why not consider following what thousands of other successful people have done and get the outside assistance of a trained and professional NLP coach? <bio>Robert Greenshields is a marketing success coach who helps business owners and independent professionals who are frustrated that they're working too many hours for too little reward.
Is it possible to reprogram the brain? Can reprogramming the brain change our behavior? Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a combination of Linguistics, Semantics, Hypnosis, Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology. It's about how we interpret the world we experience via the input through our senses: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile, olfactory and gustatory. It's about how we represent the world to ourselves and to others.

The events in our life have continually accumulated and have been stored in our subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind, in turn categorizes, generalizes, interprets and filters the inputs related to the events. This process creates what is often referred to in NLP as "our map" of the world. Furthermore it is thought that the different events and experiences create "states" in our physiology that are stored by our physiology and which in turn give rise to our behavior or reaction in given situations.

It has been demonstrated how the way we interpret the world is shown through movement of the eyes. Individuals vary in the way they experience events. Some experience them kinesthetically, i.e. feelings, others visually, some verbally (auditory), or any combination thereof. For example, we may ask a person "how was the party last night?" If the eyes turn to the right and downwards, it is likely that person is searching within for a memory of how she felt at that party. A person who is more auditory may turn her eyes left, an indication she is recalling conversations or music. A more visual person's eyes may turn upwards and to the right, indicating she might be recalling what people were wearing, or the decorations etc.

The responses those individuals will give to the question "how was the party last night?" could go something like this: "Oh! I felt really great, I had an awesome time". The auditory person may say: "The music was loud but I could still hear what Bill said about Nancy". The visual person: "The place was done out with silver balloons and blue ribbons, it created a really pleasant atmosphere."

So can our interpretation or "map" of the world be altered or "tweaked" to suit our purposes, change our perspective, or change our behavior? I say a definite yes! With the reservation that any alteration or tweaking needs to be done by an experienced and ethical practitioner with the full consent of the subject; otherwise the results could be detrimental.

Due in part to its open-ended philosophy, NLP is controversial. It is at times criticized in the scientific community as unproven or pseudo-scientific. Amongst those who watch for fraud, it is criticized for exaggerated claims and unethical approaches by a number of practitioners. There is also some dispute among its developers and proponents regarding what NLP is and is not.

At one seminar, a participant, who was an engineer, asked me "did I believe?" I said I did, but that it may not work for everyone. During the course of the seminar this participant, having disagreed with something the presenter said, stormed out never to be seen again; proving my point exactly.

Having studied NLP, and volunteered during demonstration of techniques; having applied techniques to several clients with great outcomes I can only say it worked for me and it worked for them. I definitely am a believer...and yes, it is possible to reprogram the brain! <bio>Alfred Bellanti is a NLP Master Practitioner and the webmaster of http://www.n-l-p.com.au </bio>

Did you ever try to do away with a harmful behavior, only to fail? There is an extensive list of ordinary problem behaviors that people often try to alter or eliminate using self-hypnosis or NLP. The most common are: Overeating and weight loss; stop smoking; quit chewing tobacco; stop nail biting; increasing self-confidence; overcoming insomnia and sleeping better; improving memory; and managing stress.

WHAT THE MIND CAUSES, THE MIND CAN CURE: The motivation for our behaviors starts in our thoughts. If you stop and think about it, all of these unconstructive behaviors are the result of negative thinking. In other words, you think and motivate yourself into all of these behaviors. Or at least you think yourself into feeling anxious, and that can be the origin of these behaviors. And in view of the fact that you think and motivate yourself into these behaviors, you can think and motivate yourself out of them as well. In order to think and motivate yourself out of them, you will need to know specifically how to go about doing so.

DESIRE: You are almost certainly reading this editorial because you want the motivation to make some personal changes. And that is fitting for the reason that the first building block in the "Motivation Formula For Your Success" is that you must want or desire to change. If you have read this far, at least a little part of you wishes a change.

BELIEF IS REQUIRED FOR MOTIVATION: Before anyone can eliminate a negative behavior, that person must be motivated to do so. Merely wanting a behavior to change is not adequate.

Our motivation comes from the things that we believe. If we believe that something very important to us will get better or "become enhanced" if we alter our behavior, then we will feel a high level of motivation. Conversely, if we believe that something very important to us will be placed in jeopardy if we don't alter our behavior, we will also experience motivation to alter our behavior.

Some simple examples of these motivational beliefs would be:

If I take some weight off, then I'll be able to find a companion.

If I kick my smoking habit, then I won't have to worry about cancer.

If I stop biting my nails, then my hands will look a lot more attractive.

TECHNOLOGIES THAT CAN CREATE THE BELIEFS THAT LEAD TO MOTIVATION: Neuro-Linguistic Programming - which is commonly known as NLP, provides methods that are able to instantly produce the element of belief. You can study more concerning this by reading the articles "How To Get Motivated To Exercise Using Hypnosis And NLP" and "Motivation Theory - How To Quit Smoking Using NLP And Hypnosis For Motivation." These articles are both available in my free hypnosis research library.

DECISION: The dictionary definition of the word "Decision" is making up one's mind / a verdict or judgment. When you believe a concept that gives you a powerful feeling of motivation to make a change, you will feel compelled to make a decision to eliminate a negative behavior. Decision is the key that unlocks the door to compelling action.

ACTION: The dictionary defines the word "Action" as an act or deed / to do or perform. Taking action means that rather than just daydreaming about making personal changes, you will actually take steps to bring about your desired changes.

SELF-TALK: One of the many reasons that most individuals are unsuccessful at eliminating a negative behavior is because of what they say to themselves. Self-talk is important because repeatedly it is an important part of what caused the negative behavior to begin with.

I'd like you to think about this for a moment: Let us say that you want to kick a cigarette addiction. The first thing that you are likely to say or think to yourself is: "I'm not going to smoke cigarettes anymore."

It is universal for people to tell themselves what they aren't going to do. Unfortunately, when we tell ourselves what we aren't going to do, we are actually programming ourselves to do it!

SELF-TALK EXERCISE: Say the following to yourself: I can't see blue. I can't see polka dots . . . . . . .

I'll bet your mind showed you the color blue, and then it showed you polka dots. That's because when we tell ourselves what we aren't going to do, in order to make sense of it our mind must make an image of us doing whatever it is that we would like to stop doing. And when we imagine ourselves in a behavior, our mind compels us to produce that behavior.

SUMMARY: In order to get rid of a negative behavior, we must first want or DESIRE to eliminate it. BELIEF is the element that leads us to MOTIVATION. MOTIVATION is the drive that leads us to DECISION. DECISION is the impetus to ACTION. Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a technology that we can use to facilitate beliefs, motivation, decisions, and actions.

When we tell ourselves what we aren't going to do, we make a mental picture of ourselves using the behavior that we want to alter. And that mental image gives us an urge to participate in the negative behavior. So if we want to abolish a negative behavior, rather than tell ourselves what we won't do, we must always tell ourselves what we will do.

To stop smoking say: "I can live without them."

To eliminate cravings for high calorie foods or to stop chewing smokeless tobacco say: "I can live without it."

To reduce stress say: "I'm relaxed and calm, both mentally and physically."

To overcome insomnia say: "I fall asleep promptly, and sleep soundly throughout the entire night." <bio>Alan B.
NLP or neuro-linguistic programming is a set of tools based on modelling successful people in all walks of life and has been around since 1976. The central concept is based on our language and behaviour developing from our world experiences and perceptions. Language and communication skills are fundamental for leaders. After years of modelling great communicators NLP builds significant skills sets in this area and they can all be learned. By learning and training in NLP great gains can be made in communication, image, and role in the world.

The business world is full of people wanting to:

=95 be noticed by the boss, =95 make clients and customers come back for more =95 get the right quality, price and delivery from their suppliers =95 motivate their teams to go the extra mile

Effective communications is the key to many challenges in the corporate environment. And a good NLP practitioner course is the answer to building this skill set.

NLP techniques can help increase effectiveness in workers, communicators, and most importantly, leaders in a variety of ways. One of the key areas of NLP is the building of rapport. It is a skill that in its simplest form involves matching, the language and behaviours of those your are in contact with. Rapport is well known in the business community but imagine adding hypnotic language and unconscious persuasion techniques to the mix. All of a sudden you will find sales staff and key account managers dramatically improving their sales and client relationships. NLP is also shown to be effective as an internal communication device. Managers can communicate clearly with staff thus improving motivation, productivity and the work environment.

Despite neuro linguistic programming being a tool used in the mental health profession as a therapy, the police service and intelligence agencies since the seventies, NLP is relatively new in the business world. NLP programmes are starting to be used to improve communication internally between staff as well as externally to improve sales and customer service. Many programmes are now included as part of management and leadership development.

Other uses for NLP in the business world would include preparing companies for organisational changes, developing marketing techniques, customer service and recruiting.

Rintu Basu, a developer, trainer and master practitioner of NLP and Hypnosis, has provided proven results for many large companies throughout Great Britain.
NLP is becoming a familiar buzz word among forward-looking business, self-help and self-improvement circles. But what exactly is NLP and how can it help me? This article will cover the basic precept of NLP techniques and provide an example of how they can be used to change the perceptions keeping you from achieving your full potential.

NLP is the acronym for Neuro Linguistic Programming, the science that was developed in the early 1970s. NLP embraces several techniques in its attempt to bring changes to a person's thinking, learning and communication. Proponents teach that our mind and body (neuro), and the things we say (linguistic) interact and together form our perceptions of the world. This perception is also referred to as our 'model' or 'map' of the world. NLP teaches that we act and feel according to our perceptions of the world around us and not necessarily as a reaction to the real world we're in. NLP then concludes that an impoverished or unrealistic set of beliefs will create a map for us that narrows our field of choice and as a result brings us problems.

So what do the practitioners of NLP do about these beliefs and our world maps? Is there a concrete plan that can change these maps or are they something we're stuck with? NLP believes these maps can indeed be changed, and one of the methods used to do so is called the Meta-Model.

The NLP Meta-model is a complete set of questions designed to challenge and expand the limits a person has imposed on themselves through their model or "map" of the world. When a person is talking about a situation or a problem, their word choices (which NLP calls "indicators") will actually distort, generalize and completely delete portions of the true experience. An NLP practioner will apply specific language patterns in an attempt to help the client recover the information beneath the surface of the chosen words.

NLP was originally developed to understand the language patterns of successful therapists so the results of these therapists could be replicated. Since then, the practices have been expanded to include solutions for business, self-help and other self-improvement areas.

Applied to business, a meta-model could be utilized to help an individual elaborate on the details of a problem, a proposal or objectives by seeking the important information being veiled by the person's perspectives. By applying specific language patterns designed to delve deeper into the situation, the true situation can be revealed, as well as a plan for action and a clear understanding of who is to play what role in the situation being examined. <bio>Robert Greenshields is a marketing success coach who helps business owners and independent professionals who are frustrated that they're working too many hours for too little reward.
NLP was created by observing and modeling people who were exceptionally talented within the field of therapy. NLP stands for Neuro-linguistic programming. "Neuro" relating to the brain and "linguistic" refers to the language used, and how it is used. "Programming" describes the patterns and habits you create, learn and persistently follow. As we experience the world through our senses, the information is translated into thoughts/ words. The thoughts affect our physiology, emotions and behaviour which can be heightened or dampened depending on how you use language within your own brain.

Therefore, NLP is the use of effective techniques and strategies to create changes in your thinking and communication to achieve different and better results.

More and more people are realising the value of NLP in enabling them to become more effective in their chosen field. In fact, NLP techniques and models are now being used in a diverse range of areas including education, business and human resources, sport, personal development and health.

Business NLP techniques enhance a variety of business activities. They are often present in courses about selling, presenting and team-building. Other applications of NLP in business include, teaching people to communicate more effectively and persuasively, public speaking and presentations, detecting decision-making strategies in others, making employee training more effective by working on beliefs, practical tools for employees to achieve peak performance and boosting motivation by aligning work with values. Instant rapport.

Education NLP provides a model of how we communicate with ourselves and others. NLP can used in teaching to improve the ability to impart information in ways that makes learning easier. For example, identifying natural learning styles, use of presuppositions and language patterns and eliciting states in learners that are congruent with learning.

Sport NLP is used by sport coaches to aid their clients in reaching and maintaining peak performance. Interventions include modeling and learning successful strategies from leaders in sporting fields, setting performance goals and overcoming plateaus and blocks.

Health NLP offers a cognitive model and practical tools that can help you improve the health of yourself and others. It is becoming widely accepted within mainstream healthcare that there is a link between our thoughts, behaviour and health. NLP practitioners who choose to work within therapy can help individuals lead more satisfying lives in a number of ways. This may include, helping individuals to change limiting beliefs, habits and behaviour, facilitating people to manage states and emotions and helping individuals to find meaning in life by setting achievable well-formed goals. <bio>Gemma Bailey is qualified hypnotherapist and NLP Master Practitioner.
This article describes the reverse spin or backward spin, a kinesthetic version of the swish pattern of neurolinguistic programming or nlp.

The backward spin was developed (as far as the author is aware) by Richard Bandler, one of the founders of Neuro Linguistic Programming. It is part of his new set of techniques called Neuro-Hypnotic Repatterning or NHR (Trade Marked Bandler).

I use it extensively in my hypnosis practice at the Center for Integrative Hypnosis, in New York, NY, particularly with clients who are in a quite intense negative state when they enter my office, or clients who demonstrate the appropriate kinesthetic sub-modalities (as described below). It is one of my favorite ways of trance forming fears of all kinds.

Jane Experiences the Pattern

So let's get on to the pattern. Jane is my hypnosis client. She entered my office one day in a negative state. She had come to see me as a hypnotist, so was expecting trance work, however for her own benefit I wanted to have her at least moderately relaxed before we began any formal trance! I asked what was the matter and she began to relate the terrible day she had had, and how bad she felt, while unconsciously circling her hand in front of her.

The exchange then went something like this:

=95Jane: I've had this terrible day, and I really feel bad [speaking fast =95and circling her hand in front of her, her face looking strained] =95Me: So you've had a terrible day, and you feel bad [matching her voice =95and hand movement] =95Jane: Yes that's right! [continuing her hand circle] =95Me: So now what I want you to do, is to move that feeling outside =95yourself [I move my hand further from my body, demonstrating to her =95what I wanted her to do] =95Jane: Huh [looking a little unsure, but moving her hand further away =95from herself] =95Me: Now, reverse the spin [I begin to move my hand, circling =95in the opposite direction] =95Jane: What!? [matching my lead by reversing the direction of the circle] =95Me: That's right,in the opposite way, now move it back inside and notice how it's different =95now [moving my hand, still circling, close to my body] =95Jane: Oh, what just happened=85[the strain leaving her face completely] =95Me: Now that we messed with the way your mind and body had recorded that feeling you had, let's go even further, so you can feel even better, now, as you're spinning that feeling in the opposite direction, I want you to think of a time you laughed out loud, something you found irresistible funny [Jane starts to smile] =95Me: That's right, feel that laughter and imagine putting that into the spin [Jane starts laughing, head nodding] =95Jane: wow! that's funny =95Me; that's right, and as you feel that good feeling, notice how different you feel when you try to think about that negative state you had..[Jane continues to smile, shaking her head in disbelief] =95Jane: I can't seem to get it back, it's like it doesn't matter anymore..wow..

By giving Jane control over the feeling, dissociating her, and turning the feeling into the "opposite", her state changed completely, and she learned a new way to change unwanted feelings. We were then able to complete a useful hypnosis session.

The Pattern

Here is the pattern:

=95Pick an issue you want to work through =95Notice how it feels when you step into that feeling =95Notice which way the feeling spins. Note that all kinesthetic feelings =95move, and ultimately return to their starting point, otherwise we would =95not be able to feel them. Some move clockwise, some anticlockwise, some =95horizontal, some vertical, don't worry exactly how the spin is. If you =95cannot initially locate the movement, exaggerate the feeling until you =95notice some movement, not increase the size of the spin until you can =95feel it clearly. There may be some temporary discomfort (after all this =95is a negative feeling) but we will soon bring it under control! If you =95wish you can move your hand in a circle to fix the spin in your mind. =95Now imagine the spin is moving outside your body, still spinning the =95same way but now outside you. =95Now reverse the spin (and the movement of your hand if you chose to =95move your hand in a circle), still outside yourself. =95Now move the spin back inside your body, now rotating in this opposite =95direction. Notice how it is different. Now, think of something funny and you literally start to change the chemicals and hormones coursing through your body (laughter does that) =95If you wish imagine adding color, or sparkles, or other elements to the =95new spin to make it feel even better.

We teach this and other techniques during our neurolinguistic programming and hypnosis trainings in New York.
In the twenty years or so since its inception, NLP has acquired a variety of reputations. Few who have encountered the power of Neuro-Linguistic Programming have remained neutral. At the extremes, NLP has been hailed as the ultimate fast fix and a panacea for personal growth. Alternately, it has been derided for being "techniquey," gimmicky, manipulative, and mechanical. The truth is, NLP is neither the cure-all nor the cold, cerebral event that some of its most ardent--and often less informed--promoters and detractors claim.

A Brief History

Neuro-Linguistic Programming was developed in the early-to-middle 1970s by John Grinder, a linguist, and Richard Bandler, an information scientist. Like many others, they had observed that people with similar education, training, background, and years of experience were achieving widely varying results ranging from wonderful to mediocre.

Bandler and Grinder were intrigued by these differences. They wanted to know how effective people perform and accomplish things. They were especially interested in the possibility of being able to duplicate the behavior, and therefore the competence, of these highly effective individuals. In short, they set out to "model" human excellence in such fields as education, business and therapy. What emerged from their work came to be called Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

While the name is awkward--and some object to the word "programming"--it is nonetheless descriptive. Neuro refers to the brain and neural pathways of the human organism. Linguistic is about the content (verbal and nonverbal) that moves across and through these pathways. Programming is the way the content is directed, sequenced, and connected by each of us to produce the thinking patterns and behaviors that are our experience of life. As educator and writer Sid Jacobson puts it, "There is a relationship between perceptions, thinking, and behavior that is neurolinguistic in nature. The relationship is operating all the time, no matter what we are doing, and it can be studied by exploring our internal or subjective experience."

Maps of Reality

It has long been recognized that human experience is based on internal reality maps. The structure and content of the latter determines the former. Our inner maps of reality comprise most of what we deal with as human beings. These inner maps determine what is real and unreal, achievable and not achievable, believable and not believable, for each of us. Understand another's map, and you can understand (and share) their experience of themselves and the world. Change the map, and you change them and their world.

Study of the structure of experience led Bandler and Grinder to notice external signals and cues that were the keys to understanding the "how" of certain kinds of thought processes and behavior. They were able to assemble their understanding of these cues and signals into a system that allowed its user to know how another human being creates his or her experience--how they organize and maintain their unique internal map of reality that corresponds to and organizes their experience of the external world.

A variety of creative and brilliant people were quickly attracted to Bandler and Grinder's unique work and discoveries. They helped to expand the NLP models and organize them into a vast and rich set of tools, skills, and information--a process which continues today.

Information Processing, Communication, and Sensory Experience

In NLP, we first distinguish between inner and outer sensory experience. We are all familiar with external sensory experience--the continual flow of sights, sounds, feelings, smells and tastes that make up our experience of the outer world. Our inner experience, our thoughts, emotions, responses, ideas, etc., are also comprised of information in these same five sensory systems.

Even words are multisensory events, although most of this sensory experience is deleted from conscious awareness. For example, if I write the word "walnut" on this page, you must internally access some combination of inner pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes and smells if you are to understand it. Your experience of "walnut" is unique and is comprised of your own internal sequencing and combining of distinct inner sensory events. In other words, thinking is a sensory event. Thoughts are composed of inner pictures, sounds (including words), body sensations, tastes and smells.

Most of our communication with each other, and almost all of our inner sensory representations, operate (for good or ill) outside our conscious awareness. These inner representations--what they are and the order in which they occur--combine to make up our individual reality map. And this map determines what is and is not possible in our world and our lives. Again, understand the structure and process of someone's map, and you can better understand that person's experience of life. Change the organization of the map, and you change the life experience.

Above all else, NLP is about understanding and gaining access to human experience at the structural or process level--in addition to the level of content. Put another way, NLP is a set of models and methods--highly learnable, reliable, and effective--for understanding how human beings create and maintain their experience of themselves and the world around them. NLP enables us to know how we, and others, create our unique maps of reality. It enables us to understand our own and others' processes of decision-making, communication, motivation, and learning.

Understanding our own map of reality enables us to make changes that lead to the life experiences we want. Understanding and having access to another's map of reality makes it much easier to step off our own map and respectfully step onto the other's. When this happens, the result is an experience of deep connection that is often experienced as a precious gift.

An "Operator's Manual" for Human Relationship

NLP's contribution, then, is to increasing the depth and effectiveness of our relationships--beginning with self and extending through personal and intimate relationships to our professional and work lives and, finally, to the therapeutic arena of working with others to bring about healing, change, and growth. NLP provides the tools that enable this rich connection with self and others to happen.

Chances are you have already encountered NLP, in one form or another, without its being identified and without your realizing it. NLP is so useful for the whole experience of being human that many of its original tools and distinctions have already integrated into education, training, business, and therapy--becoming part of the "common sense" wisdom of our society.

Experiencing the Structure of Experience

The whole issue of the "structure of experience" or the "process of experience" as used in Neuro-Linguistic Programming can be difficult and deadly dull to communicate with words, but easy to demonstrate with experience.
What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis, in general, is a psychological situation wherein an individual shows signs of changes in the behavior, thought, or attitude. On the other hand, some people may undergo an increase in suggestibility and subjective feelings of an "altered state of consciousness."

The hypnosis applications varied widely. Some of the people include the use of hypnosis for entertainment and health functions.

Hypnosis is not a type of therapy. Most of the psychologist use hypnosis to conduct psychological related techniques. During the presentation of technique, the subject will learn how to obey the commands and engage in behavior they might not normally choose to perform.

* What is post-hypnotic suggestion?

Post-hypnotic suggestions are the feeling carried out after the termination of hypnosis. This feeling is the response of the subject to the specific suggestions of post-hypnotic phenomena. A suggestion is given apparently during hypnosis stage. During this stage stimulus is served while the act becomes a response.

A post-hypnotic suggestion and a conditioned reflex serve a similar purpose except that the former is not established by repetitive trial.

Normally the post-hypnotic suggestion is a compound task for the subject because it can turn into a more hypnotic injunction. It is often called out because of several single sessions of hypnosis.

* What is auto-suggestion?

Auto-suggestion more popularly called autogenous training is a process wherein the subject trains the part of subconscious mind. Normally it is being performed because the subject wants to create some particulars inside the mind. Some people want to practice autosuggestion training because they want to schematize their mental level for a given purpose.

Acceptance of auto-suggestions may be quickened through mental visualization of what the individual would like to believe. Autosuggestions can be seen as an aspect of "self-exhorting", meditations or other form of similar activities.

Applications of deliberate autosuggestions intended to change the way a subject believes in terms of physical or psychological aspects.

* Is "highway hypnosis" really a kind of hypnosis?

Highway hypnosis is a mental state in which the person can drive an automobile in a great distance, responding to external events in the expected manner. In this state, the consciousness is clearly divided between the driving task and the person's thoughts on several concerns.

Based upon the theory of Ernest Hilgard, the highway hypnosis was developed in a stream of consciousness. According to the theory, highway hypnosis can be a usual experience. The common sense suggests that when driving the full weight of consciousness is brought to mind reception.

* What is neuro-linguistic programming (NLP)?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a compilation of pseudoscientific self-sustain rituals proposed for programming the mind. Richard Bandler and John Grinder introduced NLP in 1973 as a set of models and principles to describe the relationship between mind and language.

NLP is based upon the New Age principles such as the belief in unlimited potential through access to a subconscious part of the mind. Some psychologists describe it as a "therapeutic magic".

The practice of NLP is initially attracted mostly psychologist because of its magical effect. At the present times, it also attracts business and sales people.

* How is hypnosis different from meditation or relaxation?

Hypnosis does not have the exact process compared to meditation and relaxation. In the process of meditation or relaxation, the goal is to have a more relaxed and meditative state. This process can affect the body and mind in a better way.

What makes hypnosis different is that getting into the meditative state of mind and later on the hypnotic process will use the state of mind to transmit and deliver the messages throughout your body.

Compared to meditation, state of mind is the main goal of hypnosis and becomes actively responsive to words, thoughts, and ideas. <bio>Hank Taylor is a regular contributor to hypnosis-related books and sites such as 'Hypnosis Question and Answer.'
