<content:encoded><![CDATA[For people who somehow do not know what the World Cup is, it is the world championship of football or soccer as the Americans call it. It is held every four years and involves almost every country on the planet Earth is involved. This is why almost after the finals were over; they begin starting the tournament almost right after the finals. It takes almost four years to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/whittle+down" rel="tag">whittle down</a> to the teams that play in the finals. <br /><br /> By the time the tournament finals, they have whittles down about 200 teams to 32 teams. The 32 teams are divided into eight groups that have four teams. They compete against each other in round-robin tournament that whittle down the teams to the knock-out stage. In the knock-out stage, it is when the teams have to win the game. If they lose the game, they are out of the tournament for good. The final game this year was between France and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/italy" rel="tag">Italy</a>. <br /><br /> Italy was able to make it to the based on a balanced attack. This means that their defense was as good as their defense. They only allowed two goals throughout the finals. They even beat the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/host+country" rel="tag">host country</a>, Germany. <br /><br /> France made it to the finals by <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/sheer+force" rel="tag">sheer force</a> of will. Half the team was retiring this year. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/zinedine+zidane" rel="tag">Zinedine Zidane</a>, the captain of the team, was also retiring after the tournament. His experience and his teammate's experience allowed them to get them to the finals. Zidane was honored with the Golden Ball award for being the best player in the tournament. They even beat the host country, Germany. <br /><br /> France made it to the finals by sheer force of will. Half the team was retiring this year. Zinedine Zidane, the captain of the team, was also retiring after the tournament. His experience and his teammate's experience allowed them to get them to the finals. Zidane was honored with the Golden Ball award for being the best player in the tournament. <br /><br /> The final game could have been seen as the old versus young. A team, full of nearly retired people, was playing against a relatively young team. IT won because the oldsters acted like youngsters. One of the Italian players said something to Zidane about his mother. Instead of being the cool-headed oldster that he usually is, Zidane head-butts the Italian player and is thrown out of the game. Zidane is not there for the penalty goal phase when the game ends 1 to 1. France loses the game because one of their members decides to act like a 5 year-old. <bio>Dana Bradley writes about <a href="http://www.teamlogoandgear.com" >http://www.teamlogoandgear.com</a> and <a href="http://www.teamlogoandgear.com/Coupons/FansEdge.com.html" >http://www.teamlogoandgear.com/Coupons/FansEdge.com.html</a>. </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Fred Zollner, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, founded the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/detroit+pistons" rel="tag">Detroit Pistons</a> in the 1940's. The team was originally named the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons. Immediately, the Pistons entered into the National Basketball League (<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nbl" rel="tag">NBL</a>), composed primarily of teams sponsored by corporations in the Midwest. <br /><br /> Led by Bobby McDermott, the team's guard, the Pistons dominated the NBL and made it to the series championship the first year they competed. However, they lost to the Oshkosh All-Stars. Two years later they were defeated at the NBL Finals again, this time by the Seboygan Redskins, but by only a single point. <br /><br /> In 1944, they at last won their first championship title and they followed that up with another championship win in 1945. Three years later, the Pistons team transferred to the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and in 1949 the NBL and BAA joined to form the National Basketball Association or the NBA. The Pistons were the NBA's premier squad. <br /><br /> The NBA's first five seasons featured the Pistons in the playoffs and twice the team advanced to the division finals. In 1954 and 1955, the Pistons, which now included Andy Phillip on guard, Larry Froust on center, and George Yardley on forward, advanced to the NBA finals but tragically lost to the Syracuse Nationals by one measly point. In the 1956 finals, the Pistons lost once again, to the Philadelphia Warriors. Until 1964, they continued to qualify for the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nba+playoffs" rel="tag">NBA playoffs</a> but never gained their championship title back. <br /><br /> During the 1980's, draft picks and trades brought many new players to the team: Isaiah Thomas, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/kelly+tripucka" rel="tag">Kelly Tripucka</a>, Vinnie Johnson, and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/bill+laimbeer" rel="tag">Bill Laimbeer</a>. Three years later, Chuck Daly signed on as the team's head coach and he eventually led them to the 1984 NBA playoffs. With additional players like Joe Dumars and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/adrian+dantley" rel="tag">Adrian Dantley</a> and Daly's refreshing leadership, the team was getting closer and closer to that national championship. Still, during the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals, the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/boston+celtics" rel="tag">Boston Celtics</a> defeated them. However, in 1988 the tables turned, and the Celtics lost to the Pistons, due to the Piston's solid defense, made up of Dumars, Laimbeer, Johnson, and recent recruit Dennis Rodman. <br /><br /> In the late eighties and early nineties, the Detroit Pistons moved to the Palace of Auburn Hills and added Mark Aguirre to the roster. They made it to the NBA finals in 1988, 1989 and 1990 and like old times, they were again one of the top teams in the league. The Pistons relied on a bruising defense and sharp shooting and they registered 63 regular season victories. In the 1989 NBA Finals, they swept the Los Angeles Lakers and followed suit in the 1990 Finals, beating the Portland Trail Blazers. At last, they could claim the title of champion. <br /><br /> Later, the Pistons began to fade as their roster disbanded. At the same time, the Chicago Bulls emerged as a dominating team in the Eastern Conference. However, 1994 brought in a high draft pick, Grant Hill, who helped out the struggling team. <br /><br /> In the 2004 NBA Finals, the Detroit Pistons, led by guard Chauncey Billups and teammates Richard Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace, Tyshaun Prince, and Been Wallace, won the championship title, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers. <bio>Jack Peterson has an interest in Sports related topics. <content:encoded><![CDATA[ <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/air+guitar" rel="tag">Air guitar</a> is the only way that many people will ever break into the music industry. It takes no skill. Anybody can do it. And you can do it anywhere because your instrument is always with you. Being able to play air guitar used to be a thing that nobody respected - until now. With the many <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/championship+contests" rel="tag">championship contests</a> in the country, the Air Guitar World Championship has now entered the fray. Playing the air guitar is no longer just something that the spastic-looking guy does when he is drunk. It is becoming a respected pastime. <br /><br /> Being able to play the air guitar is quickly becoming a popular pastime. There are competitions held where fellow air guitar players meet and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/compete+against+each+other" rel="tag">compete against each other</a>'s air guitar playing abilities. The competitions follow the form of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/elimination+contests" rel="tag">elimination contests</a> in that you can only move on by winning each of your matches. Regional winners move on to compete in the national finals. Their airfare and expenses are paid for in order to get to the venue for the competition. Winning the national finals will move the air guitarist to the world finals in Finland. This is the final stop. Money is not offered as a reward for winning, so it seems like a long way to go just to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/gain+notoriety" rel="tag">gain notoriety</a> as the Air Guitar Champion of the World. <br /><br /> The rules are straightforward and self-explanatory. Each performer will play a song that they have chosen, and hopefully practiced, for <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/sixty+seconds" rel="tag">sixty seconds</a>. Then there is the compulsory round, which is where the judges pick a song for you, and you have to play their song for sixty seconds. The tricky part about the compulsory round is that the sixty seconds of the song can start from anywhere within the song. Therefore, you could be stuck playing the end of a song that you don't even know. The rules say that you must play an invisible instrument, and that instrument must be a guitar (drums are not allowed). Also, air roadies are allowed but they have to clear the stage before the performance can begin. There is a rule that prohibits back up bands, so if you were thinking of bringing your friends along for the ride, make sure that they stay in the audience and not on the stage. Performances are judged based on your technical ability, stage presence, and the "airness" of your performance. <br /><br /> Sometimes things like this cause one to be torn between art appreciation and craziness. Is there really a need for the Air Guitar World Championship? Should one just be thankful not to be entered in the competition or dating someone who is? However, one can also see how this art form, or expression, would be a fun, different, and exciting way to spend a weekend. Hey, at least you get to travel for free. The optimum way to enjoy something that involves pretend play as an adult, it would seem, is to tap into your inner child and - rock on! <bio>Josh Scalf is an experienced guitarist that offers great advice and resources to the beginner guitar player. The best thing to do is prepare and plan ahead of time so that you have adequate time to study. <br /><br /> Vitamin C ensures good health and immunity. With both Venus Williams and her younger <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/sister+serena" rel="tag">sister Serena</a> Williams the winners of multiple <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/grand+slam+tournaments" rel="tag">Grand Slam tournaments</a>, both sisters training under the guidance of their father and the face that both are well ranked within the competitive field of women's tennis, it's little wonder that the two often come face to face in <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/final+match" rel="tag">final match</a>es (and that, from time to time, they play side by side in doubles' final matches).<br><br>That's what has happened at the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/wimbledon+championships" rel="tag">Wimbledon championships</a> a number of times. Venus Williams and her younger sister Serena came face to face on the center court for the finals at Wimbledon this year - in 2008 - and many people wondered about the potential outcome of the match. A big reason for the curiosity that many felt about whether Venus or <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/serena+williams" rel="tag">Serena Williams</a> would take the championship is simple: since 2001 when the sisters met in the 2001 US Open final when Venus Williams won the match, younger sister Serena had held all of the power on the course.<br><br>While approaching the match at Wimbledon this year, both <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/venus+and+serena+williams" rel="tag"><a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/venus+and+serena" rel="tag">Venus and Serena</a> Williams</a> appeared to have some anxiety about the play that was going to take place. Based on the amount of time that they've spent training and competing, its little wonder that, soon after the final match at Wimbledon began, both Venus and Serena entered into the match with the desire to win; both sisters approached the match in a fully competitive mindset. <br><br>Early in the match, it appeared that Serena Williams was going to have the advantage over her older sister. Her serve came on more powerfully and she seemed to rev into a higher gear quickly; on the flip side of the coin - or in this case the flip side of the court - Venus Williams seemed to struggle, at least initially. All it took, however, for her to get into the game and to regain her focus in the match was to make a few great returns. Power of the match, of course, volleyed back and forth across the net in much the same way that the ball did - until Venus Williams went on to break serve.<br><br>While Serena Williams never backed down and continued to do all that she could to reclaim the match, it seemed as though once Venus Williams had a taste of the possibility of success she was unwilling to back down. Though no one wanted the match to end after Venus Williams'' match point in the second set, the reality is that the excitement of this competition was one that hasn't often been matched in Wimbledon history.<br><br>Both Venus Williams and her younger sister Serena approached the match hoping to come out on top; it is a tribute to their familial bond that, after the end of the Wimbledon women's finals, Venus not only celebrated her championship but also consoled her younger sister on the loss that had just taken place on center court.<bio>Payton Brooks is a senior sports writer at <a href="http://www.sportsviews.com">Sportsview</a>. <content:encoded><![CDATA[The 2006 <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fifa+world+cup" rel="tag">FIFA World Cup</a> (officially titled 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany, sometimes referred to as the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/football+world+cup" rel="tag">Football World Cup</a>) finals are scheduled to take place in Germany between 9 June and 9 July 2006. Qualification for the tournament is now complete, with all 32 competing teams confirmed. The 2006 finals are the 18th to be contested. <br /><br /> A total of 12 German cities have been selected to host the World Cup final tournament. The stadium capacities shown are all seated capacities. Many of the stadiums have higher capacities for German domestic football matches as some of the seats are replaced with terraces.Starting from <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/germany+2006" rel="tag">Germany 2006</a>, the winner of the past World Cup had to qualify for the Finals. Only the host nation qualifies automatically from 2006 on. <br /><br /> In the qualification process for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the six FIFA confederations were allocated a share of the 32 spots available on the basis of the strength of their teams. The final distribution was as follows:Europe - represented by UEFA : 51 teams competing for 13 places (Germany qualified automatically as host nation for a total of 14 places) ;Africa - 51 teams;South America -10 teams;Asia - 39 teams;North, Central American and Caribbean -34 teams;<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/oceania" rel="tag">Oceania</a> - 12 teams. <br /><br /> For the first time ever, the defending champion (Brazil) does not qualify automatically. The <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/hosts" rel="tag">hosts</a> (Germany) will retain their automatic spot. In 1934, the defending champions (Uruguay) declined to participate and the hosts (Italy) had to qualify, but in the tournaments between 1938 and 2002 (inclusive), the hosts and the defending champions had <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/automatic+berths" rel="tag">automatic berths</a>. <br /><br /> The original distribution of places between the six confederations called for Oceania to be given one full spot in the final 32; however, this idea was seen as giving Australia a virtually certain place in the finals, being by far the strongest footballing nation in their region. This decision was reconsidered in June 2003 and the previous distribution of places between Oceania and South America was restored. <br /><br /> The main surprises in European qualification at World Cup Germany were the absences of 2002 third-place finishers Turkey (eliminated by Switzerland after a momentous playoff), 2004 European Champions Greece (eliminated by the Ukraine), and established sides Denmark (eliminated by the Ukraine as well), Russia (eliminated by Portugal), and Belgium (eliminated by Serbia-Montenegro and Spain). In Africa, 2002 quarter-finalists Senegal (eliminated by Togo) and established sides South Africa, Cameroon, and Nigeria (eliminated, respectively, by Ghana, C?te d'Ivoire, and Angola) unexpectedly missed the trip to the Finals. The other zones saw no major upsets. While representing Oceania, from the beginning of 2006 Australia is part of the Asian Confederation, and will represent Asia in following World Cups. <br /><br /> If teams are even on points at the end of group play, the tied teams will be ranked as follows:greater number of points obtained in matches between the tied teams, goal difference in matches between the tied teams, greater number of goals scored in matches between the tied teams, goal difference in all group matches, greater number of goals scored in all group matches,a play-off on neutral ground, with extra time and penalties if necessary (in qualifying),drawing of lots (at the final event). This is a change from the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where total goal differential was the first tiebreaker. <br /><br /> Thirty-two years after the last football World Cup in Germany, the 2006 FIFA World Cup will again take place in Germany. For the first time after the reunification of both German states, the entire world will look to the New Germany, situated at the heart of Europe. <bio>World Cup Football i <a href="http://www.worldcupfootballi.com/">http://www.worldcupfootballi.com/</a> offers information about the soccer world cup. </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[For those who are passionate about tennis - those who want to watch as the world's best players come together, there are few events that have more meaning than the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/wimbledon+championships" rel="tag">Wimbledon Championships</a>. Each summer, the world's best players meet on the grass in one of the longest running tournaments in <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/tennis+history" rel="tag">tennis history</a> in the Championships at Wimbledon.<br><br>This year, in 2008, the Championships at Wimbledon happened for the 122nd time. In the men's <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/final+match" rel="tag">final match</a>, Roger Federer - a five <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/times+men" rel="tag">times men</a>'s champion - and Rafael Nadal of Spain took to the court to compete in the finals. As this was the year that Roger Federer lost his first place world ranking in men's tennis, a great deal of attention was paid to the match long before it began as well as for the duration of the competition.<br><br>The <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nadal+federer+match" rel="tag">Nadal Federer match</a> went a full five sets - five sets that drew so much attention that the championship match is now available on DVD for those who, unlike Roger Federer, are interested in <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/watching+the+game" rel="tag">watching the game</a> played time and time again. The rain and the wind - and of course the lighting that came into play along with the weather - all contributed to the end of Federer's sixty-five match winning streak.<br><br>There was some degree of spin to the questions that were posed to Roger Federer after the championship match was over and the players had left the court for a conference with the press; questions about whether he felt that playing against <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/raphael+nadal" rel="tag">Raphael Nadal</a> had had any benefit to him, and about whether or not his approach to the game were asked. Roger Federer's response was blunt, almost to the point of curt, when he replied that he learned nothing at all from the match. It was obvious that the loss to Nadal was frustrating to him.<br><br>Of course, those who follow the game of tennis who were drawn in by the Nadal and Federer championship at Wimbledon were watching both the Olympic Games in Beijing and the US Open carefully as well. As the field of competitors in the US Open narrowed, it had begun to look as though there could be a Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal rematch and speculators were questioning whether or not the two would again meet at center court for a championship round. The speculation, of course, underwent additional pressure when the Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal semi-final was delayed due to stormy weather.<br><br>Ultimately, whether or not Roger Federer was hoping to compete against Rafael Nadal in the finals at the US Open has proven itself to be irrelevant; there will not be a rematch as Andy Murray took Rafael Nadal down in the semi-finals and will be going on to face Roger Federer for the title. Still, those who are looking to see whether or not Roger Federer will be able to make a comeback and take the title are bound to be looking forward to the match to see whether or not he can end the season on a high note.<bio>Payton Brooks is a senior sports writer at <a href="http://www.sportsviews.com">Sportsviews</a>. <content:encoded><![CDATA[This summer's <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/european+football+championships" rel="tag">European Football Championships</a> held in Switzerland and Austria has been hailed as a massive success. The vast majority of games were full of excitement and goals and there were very few unsavory incidents. Many supporters and experts have expressed their belief that the tournament was one of the best ever. The eventual winners were Spain who were regarded as the best team not only by virtue of the winning <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/score+line" rel="tag">score line</a> but also they were the team that played the best football, scored the most goals and conceded the least.<br><br>This year's European Championships was the thirteenth time it has been held since its inauguration in 1960. The tournament format was based on four groups with four teams in each. They played off against each other once and the top two teams qualified for the quarter finals. The group stage of Euro 2008 provided a fantastic display of open attacking football.<br><br>The opening game of the 2008 tournament was played out between co-hosts Switzerland and the Czech Republic. The Swiss had high hopes that they could impress but it looked like the pressure of expectation lay heavy as they struggled. They suffered a huge blow by losing <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/star+striker" rel="tag">star striker</a> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/alexander+frei" rel="tag">Alexander Frei</a> during the game before losing 1-0.<br><br>In Group A, Portugal eased to victories over the Czech Republic and Switzerland to become the first team to qualify. In a dramatic final game between Turkey and the Czech Republic, the former emerged victorious after coming back from two goals down to score three in the last 15 minutes of the game.<br><br>In Group B, pre-<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/tournament+favorites" rel="tag">tournament favorites</a> Germany beat Poland before surprisingly losing to Croatia in the second game. They eventually qualified in the last game but failed to impress in a narrow win over co-hosts Austria, who were also eliminated in the same game.<br><br>Group C was seen as the tightest group with Holland, France and the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/world+cup+winners" rel="tag">World Cup winners</a> Italy battling with Romania. However the Dutch seemed to be one of the most <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/impressive+teams" rel="tag">impressive teams</a> in the tournament after comfortably beating Italy 3-0 and France 4-1. With Holland comfortably through, Italy and France met each other to decide the final qualification. In a tense game the Italians proved to be more resilient as they won 2-0.<br><br>In Group D Spain and Russia demonstrated some of the best attacking football in the whole tournament. The Spanish with their quick one touch football and the clinical shooting of Fernando Torres and David Villa easily qualified with victories over Russia, Greece and Sweden. The Russians followed with an impressive victory in the last game against the Swedes.<br><br>The quarter finals are typically the point when the best raise their game. This is often the case with Germany. Having struggled to qualify from the group stage, they impressed by defeat a good Portuguese team and became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals. They were joined there by Turkey who in a dramatic finale managed to level the game against Croatia in the last minute before defeating them in a penalty shoot-out. Holland failed to continue their earlier impressive performances by losing to Russia and Spain managed to defeat Italy on penalties after a tense game.<br><br>The semi-finals provided fantastic entertainment. Turkey once more demonstrated their tenacity, but ultimately were unable to restrain Germany who progressed to the Final 3-2. Spain eased through after defeating Russia for the second time in tournament.<br><br>The Euro 2008 Final was played on 30 June. Spain won 1-0 with a goal from Fernando Torres and subsequently won the tournament for the first time since 1964.<bio>Visit our lively <a href="http://b0o.com/">Football Forum</a> and talk about the <a href="http://b0o.com/football-manager/">Football Manager</a> video game.</bio>]]></content:encoded>

They have been nicknamed the "Red Devils" and "United". Their home ground is the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/old+trafford+stadium" rel="tag">Old Trafford stadium</a> located in Greater Manchester. The capacity of this stadium is 76,312 and is of only two stadiums in England, which have been given the UEFA 5-star rating. The current chairmen of the club are Joel and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/avram+glazer" rel="tag">Avram Glazer</a> and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/sir+alex+ferguson" rel="tag">Sir Alex Ferguson</a> has been the manager of the club for the past 20 years and the current captain is Gary Neville. <br /><br /> Manchester United have had to fight their way to the top to be the best soccer team in England. They have had their share of hurdles in the past like the bombing on Old Trafford during the Second World War and the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/munich+air+disaster" rel="tag">Munich air disaster</a> which claimed the lives of eight players of United when the British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on take-off at Munich, Germany. Manchester United were recently defeated in the semi-finals of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/uefa+champions+league" rel="tag">UEFA Champions League</a> on the 2nd of May 2007 by AC Milan where Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite A.K.A Kaka scored the opening goal of the match only to defeat United by 3-0 at San Siro. But one should not forget that Manchester United is the first and only team to win the Treble. They did this in the year of 1998-99, when the Red Devils won the Premier league on the final day by defeating Tottenham Hotspurs 2-1, which was enough to put them ahead of Arsenal who defeated Aston Villa 1-0. United won 2-0 against Newcastle United in the finals of the FA Cup. United also went on to win the UEFA Champions League by defeating Bayern Munich in the final 2-1 during injury time. This was considered to be one of the greatest comebacks ever witnessed in the history of football. The Red Devils have won the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/english+premier+league" rel="tag">English Premier league</a> 16 times, the FA Cup 11 times (a record), the League Cup and the UEFA Champions League Cup twice and the Intercontinental Cup and the European Super Cup once. <br /><br /> Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign Ronaldinho in the year of 2003, but the deal fell through. This was because the Manchester United and PSG could not agree upon the fee and lost the bid to FC Barcelona who signed Ronaldinho for =A350million. Manchester United's current first team line up consists of goalkeeper Edwin van der sar; defenders Gary Neville (captain), Patrice Evra, Gabriel Heinz, Rio Ferdinand; midfielders Michael Carrick, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs (vice captain) and forwards like Wayne Rooney and Luis Saha. Their current starting line up has skilled substitutes on the bench comprising of players from all over the world. They are the Premier League Champions of 2007 with only one match to go in this season and Chelsea six points behind them at second place. Manchester United is to face Chelsea in the finals of the FA Cup on the 19th May 2007 at the new Wembley Stadium. <br /><br /> Considering The Red Devils achievements in the past and the way they have grown as a soccer club and the way they have handled the difficult situations, they can be considered as the greatest soccer club of all time. <bio>Bob Zenoti is a freelance writer of various on-line content. He was named Rookie of the Year, was a member of 6 <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nba+championship+teams" rel="tag">NBA championship teams</a>, was a six-time <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nba+mvp" rel="tag">NBA MVP</a>, was named <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nba+finals+mvp" rel="tag">NBA Finals MVP</a> twice, was selected the All-Star team 19 times, league scoring champion twice, and selected as a member of the NBA 35th and 50th Anniversary All-Time Teams. And, no one was too amazed as Kareem had been a dominant force in basketball since his high school days. <br /><br /> Kareem's first or original name was Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor (he would later change it to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). He went by <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/lew+alcindor" rel="tag">Lew Alcindor</a>. His basketball dominance began in high school, where he led Power Memorial High School to a 72 game winning streak and an overall record of 96 and 6. As a sophomore at Power Memorial, he averaged 19 points and 18 rebounds for an undefeated team. His high school team was unbeaten in Alcindor's junior season as well. The next year, for the first time in 72 games, they lost a game to DeMatha Catholic High School (of Maryland), 46-43. It was the only loss for Power in 3 years. In 1965 Lew Alcindor finished his high school career with 2,067 points and 2,002 rebounds, both of which are New York City records. Kareem was the greatest high <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/school+basketball+player" rel="tag">school basketball player</a> of his time. <br /><br /> He chose UCLA to continue with his basketball development, and once again, he was a dominant force in college. Back in those days, freshmen were not eligible to play varsity, but in a exhibition game, with 31 points, 21 rebounds and 7 blocked shots Alcindor led his freshman team to a victory over UCLA's 2- time NCAA Championship varsity team, 75-60. During his first ever varsity game (66-67), Lew Alcindor set a UCLA scoring record with 56 points. He averaged 29 points and 15.5 rebounds with a ..667 shooting percentage for the year as UCLA went 30-0. They would end the season with a victory in the NCAA Championships against University of Dayton, 79-64. Lew Alcindor would go on to lead UCLA to 2 more NCAA Championships; he won a national title every year in varsity basketball in college! Alcindor finished his UCLA career with 3 National Championships, Named 1st Team All-American 3 Times (67,68 and 69), selected as Player of the Year in 1967 and 1969 by The Sporting News, United Press International, the Associated Press and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, and Named Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Tournament in 1967, 1968 and 1969. Finished lording over the NCAA he then took his game to the NBA. <br /><br /> He was drafted as the first pick in the 1969 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks were a young team in only in it's second season. In his first year Alcindor averaged 28.8 points (2nd in the NBA) and 14.5 rebounds (3rd) to lead the Bucks to an improved record of 56-26. They would reach the Eastern Division finals only to be beaten by the Knicks. Lew was awarded the League's Rookie of the Year Award. <br /><br /> After acquiring the legendary Oscar Robertson, the Milwaukee Bucks went on to become a dominant team and recorded 66 victories in the 70-71 season. Alcindor was awarded the NBA Most Valuable Player Award and his first NBA Scoring Title. The Bucks went on to dominate in the playoffs, going 12 and 2. They swept the Baltimore Bullets in 4 games in the NBA finals. He had won his first NBA title and was named NBA Finals MVP. It was after this series that he announced that his legal name was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, which translates to "noble, servant of the powerful one". <br /><br /> Kareem Abdul-Jabbar went on to win the NBA Most Valuable Player award during the 71-72, and 72-73 seasons. In 1974 the Bucks were once again in the NBA Finals, but would lose to the Boston Celtics. Kareem asked for a trade during the 74-75 season. In 1975, the Lakers acquired Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and reserve center Walt Wesley from the Bucks for center Elmore Smith, guard Brian Winters, and rookies Dave Meyers and Junior Bridgeman. <br /><br /> Kareem won the MVP award in the 75-76 season, but the Lakers failed to reach the playoffs. He again was named MVP in 76-777 when the Lakers made the playoffs, only to be stopped by the eventual champion Portland Trail Blazers. In 1979 the Lakers drafter Earvin "Magic" Johnson, and this would begin a run of Championships. The Lakers would go on to win the 5 NBA titles in the next 10 years. All the while Kareem was putting up dominant performances game in ad game out. <br /><br /> When Kareem retired in 1989, it marked the end of a dominating era in the NBA. Kareem left the game as the NBA's all-time scorer (38,387 points / 24.6 ppg), 17,440 rebounds (11.2 rpg), 3,189 blocks, and a .559 field-goal percentage in a career over 20 years and 1,560 games. He had scored in double figures in 787 straight games. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had cemented his name in history as the greatest center in the history of the NBA and more than likely, of all time! <bio>Albert is a basketball junkie, and he follows the college and NBA game. The Knicks were members of the now-defunct Basketball Association of America, which merged with the National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association in 1949. In the NBA's first ten years, the Knicks played in three straight NBA Finals games, from 1951-1953. They are one of only two teams from the original NBA that are still located in the same city. The Knicks won their first game against the Toronto Huskies, 68-66.<br /><br />The Knicks continued to field respectable teams in the 1950s, but witnessed a marked decline in the 1960s. <br /><br /> From 1960-1966, the Knicks finished in last place in their division each year. Two of the worst losses in Knicks history happened during this time: a 162-100 loss to the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/los+angeles+lakers" rel="tag">Los Angeles Lakers</a>, and Wilt Chamberlain's famous 100 point game was against the Knicks on March 3, 1962. Over the next few years, the Knicks drafted some quality players: Willis Reed, the future <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nba+rookie+of+the+year" rel="tag">NBA Rookie of the Year</a>, Bill Bradley, and Dave Stallworth. After showing promise in 1967, the Knicks General Manager hired Red Holzman to be their head coach; the Knicks made the playoffs again that year. In 1969, the Knicks made it to the finals but lost to the Boston Celtics. <br /><br /> The Knicks won an impressive 18 games in a row during the 1969-1970 season; they finished that year with a 60-22 record=97the best in the team's history. The Knicks would <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/meet+the+los+angeles+lakers" rel="tag">meet the Los Angeles Lakers</a> in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nba+championship" rel="tag">NBA Championship</a> in 1970. They won in dramatic fashion in game seven, when an injured Willis Reed walked on the court and shot two baskets=97this incident was later voted one of the greatest moments in <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/madison+square+garden+history" rel="tag">Madison Square Garden history</a>. The entire starting five from the 1970 Knicks team has had their jersey numbers retired. <br /><br /> The team failed to return to the NBA Championships in 1971. They played in the NBA Championship again in 1972, but this time the Knicks lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. The following year, the Knicks turned the tables on the Lakers and defeated them in five games to win their second NBA Championship in three years. 1973-1974 was another impressive year for the Knicks; they reached the Eastern Conference finals where they were defeated by the Celtics in five games. Willis Reed retired after this season, placing the Knicks' future in jeopardy. <br /><br /> The rest of the 1970s were pretty unremarkable for the New York Knicks, except to mention that a young bench player and defensive specialist named Phil Jackson was a member of those teams; Jackson went on to coach the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers to a total of nine championships; tied with professional basketball coaching legend Red Auerbach. <br /><br /> After a disappointing 1984-1985 season, the Knicks won the first pick in the first-ever NBA Draft Lottery; they chose center Patrick Ewing from Georgetown University. Ewing won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 1986; however, the team did not fare as well that year. The Knicks went on to win four division titles with Ewing, as well as two Conference titles. <br /><br /> Today, it seems that the Knicks are in another one of their multi-year declines. If history is any indication, some new blood will shake up the organization again and put the Knicks on the road to winning another NBA Championship. <bio>Johnny Moon contributers to the NYC travel blog at <a href="http://www.NewYorkHotelDeals.us/blog" >http://www.NewYorkHotelDeals.us/blog</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Although she is no longer the number one tennis player in the world, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/maria+sharapova" rel="tag">Maria Sharapova</a> is still absolutely the most famous and most watched female <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/tennis+superstar" rel="tag">tennis superstar</a> as well as the world's highest paid female athlete. <br /><br /> Her parents were originally from Gomel, Belarus but they moved to the infamous Siberia in Russia in 1986 after the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe. Sharapova herself was born in Nyagan, Russia on April 19, 1987. She now resides in the United States but has retained her Russian citizenship. <br /><br /> After moving with her family to the Black Sea Resort at the town of Sochi at age three, she started playing tennis later at the age of four. Her first racket came from the father of tennis star <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/yevgeny+kafelnikov" rel="tag">Yevgeny Kafelnikov</a>, who hails from Sochi. By the time she was six, she showed enough talent on the court to catch the eye of superstar <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/martina+navratilova" rel="tag">Martina Navratilova</a>, who then spoke to Sharapova's parents, urging them to send the young girl to the United States for professional tennis instruction. <br /><br /> The parents were not rich people yet they took a gamble and followed Navratilova's advice. Accompanied by her father, Sharapova went to Florida and enrolled at the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nick+bollettieri+tennis" rel="tag">Nick Bollettieri Tennis</a> Academy, the same tennis school that produced former world number ones such as Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. Due to visa problems, the father and daughter were separated from Sharapova's mother for two years. <br /><br /> In the beginning, Sharapova's father worked at several jobs to pay for her tennis lessons. But things would get better soon enough. The giant sports talent agency, International Management Group, soon granted Sharapova a full scholarship to ease the financial burdens on her father. <br /><br /> In 2004, Sharapova defeated two-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) in the finals to become the third youngest winner of the prestigious Wimbledon women's singles event, following the footsteps of Lottie Dod and Martina Hingis. She also became the first Russian to win the event. On her way to the finals, Sharapova pulled off stunning three-set victories against Ai Sugiyama (5-7, 7-5, 6-1) and Lindsay Davenport (2-6, 7-6, 6-1). <br /><br /> On September 12, 2005, Sharapova rose in the rankings and was named the number one tennis player in the world. She was only 19 years old. <bio>Jonathon Hardcastle writes articles for <a href="http://thetennisstop.net/" >http://thetennisstop.net/</a> - In addition, Jonathon also writes articles for <a href="http://igolfcentral.net/" >http://igolfcentral.net/</a> and <a href="http://erecreationstation.com/" >http://erecreationstation.com/</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[ You have taken singing lessons and were told by your friends that you are a great singer. You know deep down inside you that you are a singing talent yet to be discovered. <br /><br /> Now that you are well and ready, having developed your own unique singing style, you want to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/launch" rel="tag">launch</a> your singing career. You <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/realistically" rel="tag">realistically</a> realized that without any previous professional singing experience it is difficult for your singing career to have a breakthrough. <br /><br /> Singing agents, recording labels, club owners and employer of singers will naturally be <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cautious" rel="tag">cautious</a> before they hire you because they <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/have+never+heard" rel="tag">have never heard</a> of you before and what if you fumble on your first professional performance? That will be an embarrassment for them and may even cost them money. <br /><br /> Instead of being a singing talent, they are afraid that you will become a singing terror! Even if they recognize your singing talent and employ you, your professional singer's fee will be low because you are an unknown. <br /><br /> So how do you make a name for yourself as a singing talent so that you can launch your singing career successfully? One easy way is to take part in as many <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/singing+contests" rel="tag">singing contests</a> as you can. <br /><br /> Not only to take part, but to win many of them. By winning singing contests and competitions, you will win fans and singing talent scouts and employers will start noticing you. By virtue of these people approaching you for singing contracts to sign you up instead of the other way around, you are now a being recognized singer with great talent and can ask for higher professional fees because they will be competing with each other for your singing performances. <br /><br /> Naturally you have to be a great performer and good singer to win singing contests, so you must know your own <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/strength+and+weaknesses" rel="tag">strength and weaknesses</a>. You must be able to convince the judges that you are worthy to win the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/singing+competition" rel="tag">singing competition</a>. How do you do that? Just must be very well prepared. <br /><br /> I am sure you must have watched the TV singing competition show "American Idol". You must be laughing and rolling on the floor when you see American idol wannabes making a fool of themselves in the preliminary rounds. There were those who were tone deaf, those who have forgotten the song lyrics, those who were just disastrous singers and a pain to listen to and those who are so outrageous in their performance that they over perform ridiculously. <br /><br /> Now, you will notice that the contestants that make it through to the later rounds do not share the characteristics and antics mentioned above. Those who made it to the finals are class acts in themselves. Why? This is because they know where they are, understand their singing skills they have at their disposition and use them to their maximum potential and of course, they take singing lessons from the singing coaches. <br /><br /> In short, they were well prepared for the singing contest. So you should learn from the mistakes of those contestants that did not make it and learn the good habits from those that made it to the finals. <br /><br /> Armed with these skills, then go and join any singing contests you can find and yes, when you are ready, only when you are ready, then join the American Idol singing contest. Who knows, you may be the next American idol and achieve worldwide singing super star status. Wouldn't that be a fantastic way to launch your singing career? <bio>Chris Chew is a jazz pianist. She captured 18 <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/grand+slam" rel="tag">Grand Slam</a> singles titles and 40 Grand Slam doubles titles. <br /><br /> She was born in Czechoslovakia on October 18, 1956 and at age 18 defected to the United States in 1975. She was granted US citizenship in 1981. Her given name was Martna Subertova but her parents divorced when she was three and her mother remarried a man named Miroslav Navratil, who would later one become her very first <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/tennis+coach" rel="tag">tennis coach</a>. Martina later on adopted her stepfather's name and added the feminine suffix "ova." <br /><br /> By the time she was 15, Navratilova was making her mark on the tennis scene. She won the Czechoslovakian national <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/tennis+championship" rel="tag">tennis championship</a> in 1972 and turned professional the very next year at age 16. Her first professional singles victory came in 1974 in Orlando, Florida. <br /><br /> She is best known as a strong left-handed serve-and-volleyer with magnificent volleying skills and an aggressive and powerful game. Her excellence on the court raised the quality of the women's game to new heights. Early in her career, Navratilova was on the overweight side and received some sharp remarks from the press for it. However, showing her firm determination, Navratilova soon whipped herself into shape with a punishing fitness routine that she maintained throughout the rest of her career. Eventually, a high level of conditioning soon became a hallmark of her game. <br /><br /> In 1978, she won her first Grand Slam singles tournament at Wimbledon, defeating <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/chris+evert" rel="tag">Chris Evert</a> in three sets in the championship. Her victory propelled her to the top of the women's rankings and she was named the number one female tennis player in the world for the first time. Evert and Navratilova would meet again in the Wimbledon finals a year later and Navratilova would once again prevail. <br /><br /> In 1981, Navratilova bagged her third Grand Slam singles title, once again by defeating Evert in the finals, this time in the Australian Open. In 1982, she would go on to win both Wimbledon and the French Open. <br /><br /> By the mid-1980s, Navratilova hit her stride and embarked on her domination of the women's tennis scene. After losing the French Open in 1983, she would go o to win all three remaining Grand Slam tournaments that year -- Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open. Amazingly, her defeat at the season-opening French Open was her only loss for that season and she went 86-1 win-loss for the year. That is the best-ever winning percentage for a professional tennis player for a single season. <bio>Jonathon Hardcastle writes articles for <a href="http://etenniscenter.com/" >http://etenniscenter.com/</a> - In addition, Jonathon also writes articles for <a href="http://igolfcentral.net/" >http://igolfcentral.net/</a> and <a href="http://universeofentertainment.com/" >http://universeofentertainment.com/</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Attention rubgy fans! Are you an aficionado of "the ruffian's game played by gentlemen?" Are you thinking about heading to France for the 2007 <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/rugby+world+cup" rel="tag">Rugby World Cup</a>? Surely you want to be on hand to see if England will keep their champion standing, or watch as some other country wrests the top spot away from them. France, Australia, and New Zealand were right in there for the 2003 Cup; they will surely be back in force. And who knows? There is always the possibility that a team could come out of nowhere and prevail. No way you want to miss any of that action! <br /><br /> If the thought has turned into a definite plan to attend some if not all of the September 7-October 20 mega-event, you better get your tickets (one place you can try is the main event site at www.france2007.fr). But don't stop there! Now is also the time to nail down your living arrangements. Wait too long, and the search for good accommodations will make you feel like you're in the middle of a scrum yourself. <br /><br /> If you are anywhere near serious about getting as immersed in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/games" rel="tag">games</a> as you can, the last thing you want to do is deal with arranging multiple accommodations and then bounce around from <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/venue" rel="tag">venue</a> to venue with luggage in hand. Your best bet for maximum rugby enjoyment is to rent a short <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/term+apartment" rel="tag">term apartment</a> for the duration of your visit and use it as your base camp. And your best bet for base camp is Paris. <br /><br /> With the great <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/train+service" rel="tag">train service</a> and central location of the French capital city, having an apartment that you can call home will let you make forays into the countryside to take in however many games your stamina can handle and then return to regroup. You can easily ride the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/chunnel+train" rel="tag">Chunnel train</a> to get the Cardiff and Edinburgh games if you are a real hard core fan. Sometimes, though, you won't have to travel too far: A number of games (including the semi-finals and finals) are scheduled at venues in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/paris+metro" rel="tag">Paris metro</a> area. <br /><br /> With all the advantages of Paris (oh, and there are other interesting things there besides rugby stadiums), there is one disadvantage: vacation apartments will be at a premium, if they aren't already. Places with good amenities in interesting neighborhoods and enough space for your whole party are getting snapped up as you read this. <br /><br /> If you are any kind of rugby fan, you have a responsibility to be in the best shape possible to go nuts rooting for the team(s) of choice. This means that you need to pay as much attention to your between-game experience as you do to your in-stadium one. Your best strategy? Follow up your ticket purchase by nailing down a place you can hang out between games. Right now. <bio>Rita Borges is Managing Director of Paris Luxe (<a href="http://www.parisluxeapt.com">http://www.parisluxeapt.com</a>), a firm specializing in short term rental of upscale and luxury Parisian apartments. <content:encoded><![CDATA[ In Mexico, soccer started developing in different regions of the country, with the first form of an organized championship being the Primera Fuerza, which was a local league consisting of various teams around the Federal District area. Players were semi-professional during this time, in a time where Europe had already promoted soccer professionalism. <br /><br /> With FIFA gaining strength as an international soccer governing organization, Mexico decided to organize a national <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/soccer+organization" rel="tag">soccer organization</a> of their own in 1927, called the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/federacion+mexicana+de+futbol" rel="tag">Federacion Mexicana de Futbol</a> Asociacion (FMFA), who became a member of FIFA in 1929, just in time to participate to the first World Cup with the newly formed Mexican <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/national+soccer+team" rel="tag">National Soccer Team</a>. <br /><br /> Although participating in the first World Cup, the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/mexico+soccer+team" rel="tag">Mexico soccer team</a> wasn't considered a soccer power at that time, which was confirmed by their lack of results in <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/world+cup+qualifications" rel="tag">World Cup qualifications</a> until 1950. Although the team was now a constant presence at the World Cup, they had difficult times competing against the more powerful European and South American nations and only won 1 match in 5 tournaments, against Czechoslovakia in 1962. <br /><br /> But in 1970, in an effort to promote soccer nationwide and seeing the economical importance of hosting a World Cup, Mexico managed to get hold of the rights to organize their first World Cup in history. The Mexico soccer team managed to reach the quarter-finals on this occasion, which is still their biggest international performance to date. <br /><br /> However, they would equal this performance 16 years and 4 World Cups later, again on home ground, as they would organize the 1986 World Cup, considered by many as the most entertaining in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/history+of+soccer" rel="tag">history of soccer</a>. <br /><br /> Nowadays, reaching the quarter finals of a World Cup is considered harder than it was in the 70s or 80s and although <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/mexican+soccer" rel="tag">Mexican soccer</a> progressed substantially, they're still suffering in major competitions when facing soccer giants from Europe or South America. However, the future is looking a lot brighter for Mexican soccer in general and for the Mexico national soccer team. <br /><br /> Club soccer in the country is now deemed as one of the richest in the Americas and some powerful clubs take part in the Copa Libertadores, a competition that was normally allowed only for South American clubs. <br /><br /> Several top quality players have moved from the Mexican league towards more powerful ones, the clearest examples being Rafael Marquez and Giovani Dos Santos, who were bought by Spanish side FC Barcelona and are both important members of the squad. <br /><br /> With these two players in the team, as well as several other emerging talents playing in the national league, the Mexico national soccer squad looks tougher than ever and ready to beat their quarter-final best finish in the upcoming World Cup in South Africa, 2010. <bio>Niv Orlian is the author and the owner of href="<a href="http://www.soccer-fans-info.com" >http://www.soccer-fans-info.com</a>, a website that provides information on various topics related to soccer.
