The United States Navy is a very integral part of the United States Armed Forces. The U.S. Navy has played many crucial parts in our nation's history. The U.S. Navy has been the master of the seas for a very long time. Ever since World War I there has not been a navy in the world that can compete with us.

However the U.S. Navy was dealt a tremendous blow during World War II when a naval base was attacked at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 8th, 1941. This was a very brutal attack that the Japanese made on the U.S. Navy, but they did not cripple our forces. The U.S. Navy rebounded from that attack and went on to help defeat Japan, Germany, and Italy to end World War II. Many people think of the U.S. Navy as just a bunch of ships that wait off shore and stop the other country's ships from doing anything. However this is not the case, the U.S. Navy has a wide array of equipment that help to support the Armed Forces carry out the attack plan designed by our country.

The U.S. Navy does have many different types of ships that are used during wartime. Some of these ships are used to carry men, vehicles, and planes, like aircraft carriers, and amphibious assault ships. Other ships are used to attack warships, and can even be used to launch attacks on land targets as well. These types of ships include battleships, cruisers, destroyers, and frigates. The U.S. Navy also has submarines which can be used to carry out underwater missions that include research, rescue, and other specific wartime missions.

Many people realize that these ships are part of the U.S. Navy, but quite a few people do not realize that the Navy also has over 4,000 airplanes that it can deploy. Probably the most famous squadron of airplanes in the world is the U.S. Navy's flight demonstration squadron known as the Blue Angels. I remember seeing the Blue Angels when I was a kid and being amazed that they could fly in a formation so close to one another without crashing. The next time someone tells you that the U.S. Navy is just a bunch of ships; you can tell them the Navy is much more than that. <bio>Get yourself a Pearl Harbor US Navy Fighting Knife: http://www.thompsonoutdoors.com/-p-117.html or a Navy Seal Knife: http://www.thompsonoutdoors.com/-p-42.html . </bio>

Army rings, military rings, and navy rings are considered as one of the top men's accessories next only to ties and a good watch. Almost every man worth his salt knows what kind of army rings, military rings, and navy rings to buy. They should not be hollow, but solid-backed. Authentic rings are also usually made of solid gold or silver. These rings are not metal-plated with a token dipping in gold. These are made with the good stuff. Of course, having a good ring does not end with buying it. Proper maintenance is key if you want your ring to last. Even if your ring can beat that of Frodo's, it still needs to be cared for.

These rings are still jewelry and ordinary metal jewelry care is enough for light cleaning. However, for stains that won't budge, resist scraping. Instead bring your army rings, military rings, and navy rings to a professional jewelry cleaner for expert cleaning. But for those who want to save some bucks (these rings aren't cheap), there are a few tricks to keep your ring from being damaged and some tips for light cleaning.

First, keep your army rings, military rings, and navy rings free of perspiration and dirt. This goes without saying that before doing any potentially dirty and rough job like mowing the lawn or home renovation, it is better to take your ring off. Perspiration may discolor your ring if it is soaked for long periods. Dirt particles are rough and can scratch your ring. Even if your ring is solid gold and not like the cheap gold-plated ones, it is still better to take precautions.

Second, avoid exposing rings to chemicals like detergents or chlorine. Why? Because army rings, military rings, and navy rings don't mix with laundry. Also, only insecure show-offs wear rings in swimming pools. Aside from being tagged as an insecure show-off, your are throwing away a fortune by discoloring and tarnishing your rings in water with chlorine.

Third, always wipe rings using a clean cloth to remove surface grime. The cloth must be soft and smooth to improve the luster of your army rings, military rings, and navy rings. Do this before storing your rings because surface dirt like oil and dust may cling to your ring and cause permanent discoloration. Store rings in soft individual pouches or in their original, velvet-lined box. This will keep them from getting rubbed or scratched against each other.

Lastly, don't be rash and quick to use those advertised jewelry cleaners and polish. Unless from reputable manufacturers, they are likely to discolor your army rings, military rings, and navy rings. Instead, like a true Boy Scout, make a simple solution of mild detergent and water. Dip a soft fabric in it and wipe your rings with the cloth. In the same manner, use water to remove the detergent and soap residue from your rings. If you don't know what a detergent is, rubbing alcohol will do. Just don't forget to wipe it off your army rings, military rings, and navy rings. It is still a chemical, you know. <bio>For more valuable information on army rings, please visit http://www.armyrings.net </bio>

If you choose this career route, you may find yourself working as a: social scientist, conservation scientist, science technician, atmospheric scientist, physicist, astronomer, computer scientist, medical scientist, biological scientist, scientific researcher or a number of other science-related fields. Let's see what makes working as a scientist so rewarding.

Rewarding Career

The work of scientists is similar to that of an engineer. Both scientists and engineers use their creativity, energy and talents combined with their mathematics and science background to help solve everyday problems.

Scientists get to work in the design, creation and development of new products, as well as work in the production, monitoring, maintenance and even testing of these products. Often times the products scientists create help members of society live happier, healthier lives. Science brings understanding to the world we live in.

Science Career Stats

The following list includes a few useful statistics for science career seekers:

- Scientists usually work 40 hours per week. However schedules may change due to experiment and research loads. Scientists often find themselves working in a laboratory or even conducting field research.

- A requirement of scientists is to constantly stay on top of the latest research and technological changes since they often perform cutting edge research.

- Scientists typically collaborate with others on their research projects.

- Gaining a bachelor's degree in your particular area of interest is a minimum. You may want to pursue an advanced degree. You will most likely be surrounded by people with a Ph.D and even some with medical degrees. You will not be able to go much further than a position as a Research Associate without an advanced degree.

- Scientists commonly gain employment in academic institutes (like universities and non-profit organizations). They may also work in corporate environments.

A career as a scientist is a very prestigious career field. Many important people in history were considered scientists. The best scientists are those that are curious about the world we live in and strive to make it a better place. <bio>Copyright © 2006. All Rights Reserved.
Sporting a manly ring can boost any man's confidence. Army rings, military rings, and navy rings are among men's top choices. There is nothing like the power and authority (even imaginary) associated with what these rings represent that is appealing to most men. However, all rings are not created equal. The market is flooded with rings that are of low quality. So before investing your cash in these flimsy imitations, here are a few things to look and ask for in buying an authentic, classic ring.

Quality products are made from quality materials. Before being blinded by a ring's gold sheen ask if that ring is made from solid gold. Be wary because some manufacturers use cheaper metals such as brass. The finished rings are then given a thin gold plating. Cheaper price for the same look right? Be careful though because platings are easily scratched and prone to wearing off. Over time, your golden ring will have a mottled appearance of patches of gold and brass. Since you are buying army rings, military rings, and navy rings for their powerful appeal, buy one whose appeal would last. Classic rings are made of solid gold. Meaning, the price you pay for them is worth it since they will last long. Their value as an investment would also fetch higher rates as time passes.

Classic army rings, military rings, and navy rings are characterized by having solid backs. They are not hollow like the cheaper rings. The classic rings' solid backs also gives them substantial weight to resist pressure. They are made for longer wear because the risk for crushing them when bumped, or any deformity is minimal to almost none. They are also less likely to irritate your skin than rings that were hollowed out. Classic rings are also more comfortable because of their solid back structure. Better or even perfect fit is guaranteed because classic rings are largely custom made.

Cheaper rings are mass produced unlike classic rings. As a result they have pits, uneven surfaces, and ugly marks. On the other hand, classic rings are hand crafted. This means that there is more attention given to details. Finishing is done by a master polisher. The rings, especially the army rings, military rings, and navy rings are carefully polished to give them depth and bring out their classic beauty.

In the final analysis, cheaper army rings, military rings, and navy rings are only good if you don't intend to keep and wear them for long. However, if investment, quality, and long-term use are what you had in mind, forego buying cheap rings. It would be better for your finances and worth your investment to buy classic rings. After all, when it comes down to it, classic rings have the best value and quality worth their price. <bio>For more information on Army Rings Military Rings, please visit http://www.armyrings.net </bio>

What exactly is a credit union? What are the benefits of a credit union? Learn the answers to these questions plus others in this quick look at the basics of credit unions.

First of all, what is a credit union? It is a not for profit financial institution that is owned and governed by its members, through a board of directors.

The primary difference between a credit union and a conventional bank is ownership and control. Specifically, the fact that credit unions are owned and controlled by their members, whereas conventional banks are usually owned by stockholders.

Since credit unions are run not for profit and owned by their members, they have historically offered better interest rates to their members -- all profit can be re-invested to the members, rather than raising stock prices, as a conventional bank would do. So, often times you can get better interest rates on savings accounts and lower interest rates on loans through a credit union, when compared to a conventional bank.

Not everyone qualifies to join every credit union, though. Regulations require that a credit union restrict its members to a specific demographic group. For example, a credit union might service only people who work at a particular company, or are members of a specific organization. However, most credit unions will allow a member to always remain a member, even if they no longer qualify for a membership.

In the United States, a credit union may be chartered through the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) or in some cases, under the authority of the state. Unions chartered through the NCUA will have Federal Credit Union in their name, and are insured through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF). Credit Unions chartered under the state government may be insured through the NCUSIF or through a private insurer.

Credit Unions are actually used most in Canada, where over one third of the population is a member of one. <bio>Learn about the Navy Federal Credit Union at http://usacreditunions.com/NAVY-FEDERAL-CREDIT-UNION </bio>

A trip to Chicago is not complete without a visit to Lake Michigan. While there are many ways to make a stop at the lake happen, one that guarantees a good time is a visit to Navy Pier, located right there on Lake Michigan.

Opened in 1916, the Navy Pier has played host to a number of different occupants, including the United States military and the University of Chicago. Neither remained, and in the early 1990's, the Pier was renovated to become the entertainment and recreation complex it is today.

Restaurants, shopping, rides and shows, the Navy Pier has a little something for everyone. Staying at a downtown Chicago hotel means the Pier is just to the East and will be easy to enjoy! If the weather's right, the Pier is walking distance from most hip Chicago hotels.

Not up for a stroll? Catch a free ride on one of the city's many trolleys or hop in a taxi. The concierge at any hotel in downtown Chicago will be able to give you simple, easy directions as you head out for adventure near the lake.

Exploring Navy Pier:
Seeing Navy Pier for the first time can be a great adventure. First, you'll come across the water display at the fountain- always a pretty site, and a fun spot for children to splash in when the weather's hot. Strolling onto the Pier, the Family Pavilion is next up. There, both kids and grown-ups will find options sure to please. Wandering through a children's museum and catching an Imax movie are perfect ways to get young minds thinking, and not to shabby for grown-ups, either!

Those without kids in tow might want to spend their time exploring the many shops and boutiques that the concierge at any luxury hotel in Chicago is quick to recommend. When it's time to grab a bite to eat, this area offers several restaurant choices. As you leave the pavilion, take note of the lovely blooms at the Pier's botanical center.

Dock Street, not open to vehicles, is the perfect path for a meandering walk alongside the lake. Street entertainers, like jugglers, mimes and singers, are often set up in certain areas along the street, which makes for a fun walk, since you never know just what you'll stumble across! One evening, set out from your downtown Chicago hotel and visit Dock Street for a stunning fireworks exhibit. The show happens twice a week, and is a booming display that shouldn't be missed.

The dramatic fireworks set a fun scene that's a perfect compliment to time spent at the Pier's amusement park area. Giant Ferris wheels, swing rides and a traditional carousel all provide an opportunity to have a little innocent fun. Miniature golf is also available, for those with a competitive streak.

If you're in the mood for a performance, there are several options that fit the bill at the Pier. Free performances by singers, dancers, comedians, theater groups and cultural celebrations take place at one venue, while big-name, national stars perform at another location. Other than the Imax theater, there's also a playhouse dedicated to Shakespeare's works that can be a fun night out, especially if you stop at the English pub nearby.

No Pier experience is complete without a trip around Lake Michigan on one of the many vessels docked at the Pier. Recommended by many Magnificent Mile hotels, the different boat tours and cruises are a great way to experience Chicago.<bio>Norma Berry has an interest in the downtown Chicago luxury hotels .
Mannose: is one of the 8 Glyconutrients. It helps to build tissues and aids with communication between the cells. It assists the body in strengthening the immune system and repairing itself. Mannose helps the body produce cytokines, which fight off infections and serious diseases. It is found in the leaves of the Aloe Vera plant, which has been used for many centuries to promote the healing of wounds.

Mannose is similar in structure to glucose. It is a sugar compound made up of 6 carbon atoms. It is found in many plant polysaccharides and glycoprotein. Plant polysaccharides are also known as mannans, hence the name for this saccharide Mannose.

The liver in order to make glycoprotein absorbs mannose. It is also absorbed from the intestines walls into the blood stream and lastly into the cells. Glycoform synthesis in mammals uses dietary mannose. Mannose is readily absorbed by the body and clears within several hours. It is made into Glycoprotein in the liver, intestines, brain and even fetus.

People have been taking diet supplements for over 150 years. They were 1st given to sailors in the Royal Navy to prevent scurvy; a disease caused by lack of vitamin C. It was given in the form of lemon or lime juice, as these fruits are rich in vitamin C.

Since then other diet supplements have been developed to aid in prevention of other illnesses and for improvement of health. In 1941 the 1st RDAs were published. They were meant to be a guide for the basic nutrition intake for the public. The Food and Nutrition Board of the U.S. National Research Council published them. In Europe and Canada they publish a similar report.

Since the last 10 years scientists have been researching the carbohydrate group of foods, among them Glyconutrients. Scientists, until recently, have not given any importance to this complex group of foods but now with the advent of Glycobiology (study of Glyconutrients) research is revealing new facts about these vital nutrients.

Diet Supplements are best taken at room temperature with cold water. They will be most effective when taken this way. They are usually taken on a daily basis. It is important to take these supplements with your doctor's advice. Supplements cannot cure diseases but they can help the body protect and heal itself better.

Taking these glyconutritional supplements will help you to improve your health and well being. In today's busy world it is important that we try to maintain our health and we can do this with the help of supplements such as glyconutrients.

Note: Glyconutrients are not intended to heal, treat, or cure any disease. <bio>Zach Thompson is a Glyconutrients Consultant.
According to recent research, hummingbirds may have very small brains but excellent memory when it involves food. These small birds weigh 0.7 ounces or less and their food consists of nectar and insects.

Research published in the journal Current Biology proposes that hummingbirds can remember their food source and actually plan with some precision.Susan Haley from the University of Edinburgh said, "To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that animals in the wild can remember both the location of food sources and when they visited them,"

Healy, along with scientists in Britain and Canada, have studied the Rufous hummingbird that lives in the Canadian Rockies. The Rufous hummingbird can remember the location of specific flowers and the last time they visited them. These are two examples of episodic memory previously considered exclusive to humans. Healy stated, "Hummingbirds that defend territories of many flowers remember which flowers they have recently emptied."

In the birds' feeding grounds, scientists kept track of how frequently the hummingbirds visited eight artificial flowers filled with a sucrose solution. Once the flowers were empty the scientists refilled half after 10 minutes and other half after 20 minutes.

Scientists discovered that the birds' returned to the flowers according to the refill schedule. The flowers refilled every ten minutes were visited by the hummingbirds sooner than those refilled every 20 minutes. Healy commented, "We were surprised that their timing abilities were so good and that they managed to cope so efficiently with as many as eight different flowers."

The Rufous hummingbird has the longest migration route of all US hummingbirds. In the winter, the Rufous hummingbird migrates 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) from Canada to Mexico. In the spring they return home to reproduce.

Scientists believe that the hummingbird's brain has become extremely developed because they travel long distances and don't have time and energy to waste looking for food. <bio>Madeline White specializes in flower delivery online.
Like anyone else, from time to time active and former personnel of the US Military will find themselves in need of some money fast. They may have a bill that needs paying, a project that needs completing, or a repair that needs done and not have the time to save up for it. That is where personal military loans come in. These loans are offered at a lower interest rate with favorable terms to those in the military or formerly in the military. Whether you were in the USAF, USMC, US Army, Navy, or even the National Guard you are eligible for these fast and easy loans available from many financial institutions.

Military loans can actually be used for a number of purposes. You can use them for bills that are running behind, repairs on your car or home, or even child related expenses that can surprise you. You can even use the money for a much needed vacation or debt consolidation. New baby on the way? You can use a military loan to pay for that new nursery or baby supplies you need at the last minute. The uses for a military loan are endless.

There are actually several military loans available. Some are good for anyone in any form of the armed forces. Others are for individual branches. You can get Air Force loans if you are a member of the Air Force, Marine loans for the marines, Navy loans for the Navy, and so forth. No matter how you serve, you can get loan service.

Your military loan will offer you a number of advantages. First of all, the interest rate is generally well below that offered to civilians for a personal loan. They are definitely lower than credit cards as well, which makes them good for card consolidation. Secondly, military loans are quick. You fill out an application, gives some information, and are given an answer in a matter of hours. The money can then be sent to you by wire, mail, or even direct deposit no matter where in the world you are. In fact, you can even have the money sent to a family member. Finally, even if you have credit problems or some debt out there already, military loans can often be approved for you. They are structured to be paid back through your military pay in many cases, so that late payment or late fees are never a factor. The money is gone before you get it, which is good for you. Finally, there is rarely any penalty for early payment of military loans.

Military loans are a great way to go if you are in the military and in a financial pinch. The benefits above should help you understand what a great deal this is for you. Take advantage and consolidate your credit cards, go on vacation, or decorate the nursery for your newest addition. Military loans are there for you in almost any situation. <bio>Military loans (http://Mili-Loans.com) available at reasonable interest rates if you know your facts. Army Loans (http://ArmyLoans.info) or Air Force Loans (http://AirForceLoans.info) are a great way for military members to get their needs met. </bio>

Maybe we haven't conquered outer space yet, but there's little argument that we have made bang-up progress since the first attempts to get into the heavens. The space age actually began in 1946, when captured German V-2 rockets were used to take measurements in the upper atmosphere. Prior to this, scientists used balloons that went up about 20 miles and radio waves were used to study the ionosphere. This continued to about 1952.

The U.S. had been considering launching orbital satellites since 1945 under the Bureau of Aeronautics of the United States Navy. The U.S. Air Force at first considered satellites to be a tool for science, politics, and propaganda. Following pressure by the American Rocket Society, the National Science Foundation, and the International Geophysical Year, military interest picked up and in early 1955 the Air Force and Navy were working on Project Orbiter, which involved using a Jupiter C rocket to launch a little satellite called Explorer 1 on January 31, 1958.

Meanwhile, in 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the earth's first artificial satellite. It sent back the first images of outer space, beating the United States by one year, and resulting in the first satellite transmissions from room. >From that we have evolved to what we take for granted today in terms of satellite television. This is considered the beginning of the room race between the U.S and the U.S.S.R.

This contention between the Soviet Union and the United States pretty much ushered in the beginning of satellite intercommunication. By 1973, Canada's satellite Anik I became the world's first satellite television network. It was primitive by today's standards, but it was a start. See more of this subject at http://www.yesastronomy.com.

Today, the method of Satellite TV has gotten very effective: we now get clear signals, reliable transmission, and several providers that guarantee that there's always something good to watch. And, with VCRs and TiVo you can record your favorite shows and watch them when it's convenient for you.

The coach potatoes of this today thus began their affections for TV satellite networks. HBO began broadcasting their signals to cable companies, who sold you access to the channel via subscription. The problem, naturally, was that for every channel you subscribed to you had to pay a little extra. This was not acceptable news for the austere channel surfers who want to have over 100 channels accessible. And it got pretty frustrating for those who heard about a new movie or sports event being shown, only to discover that the signal was blocked and accessible only to premium subscribers.

But soon cable companies and satellite dish companies recognized the potential in making satellite television transmission accessible to everyone at an affordable price. Today it's hard to find a household that does not have cable or satellite broadcasted into their habitat.

So maybe the space race of history isn't what it used to be. We may or may not colonize Mars in our lifetime. But at least we can watch transmissions from around the world in real time. Remote control fans rejoice! <bio>Yvonne Volante, the author, is a big fan of star-gazing and writes for yesastronomy.com, which is the premier astronomy and space resource on the internet.
The advent of the modern Global Positioning System -- or GPS -- can most often be found on the dashboard of a car. So popular is this technologically advanced mapping system, that newer cars are even being designed with GPS included as a standard feature. But what many fail to realize is that GPS began as much more than a device used by the directionally challenged. GPS began as a revolutionary and promising piece of equipment designed by the United States Government.

The possibilities of GPS first began to materialize when Russia put Sputnik into space in 1957. Those following the travels of the spacecraft from the ground realized that they could track its progress based upon the strength of its radio signal; and this one fact opened up a whole new world of possibilities. The U.S. Navy was the first government faction to dabble in GPS; in the mid 1960's, they launched the Transit System -- a system of six satellites that circled the earth and helped missile-carrying Navy submarines pinpoint their location. The United States Department of Defense designed and operated the first modern GPS; the first satellite was launched in 1978.

Today, this system includes the operation of 24 satellites that continually circle the earth and is used for a variety of functions that include GPS mapping, navigation, and tracking. With the assistance of these invisible satellites we can pinpoint our location, the location of someone else, or the location of a place we want to travel. What is more incredible is the size and compactness of such a system. The modern GPS can fit into the palm of your hand and yet holds enormous power.

GPS has literally transformed the world; and its possibilities for the future can not even be imagined. We can only wait and see what lies ahead for the evolution of GPS. <bio>For easy to understand, in depth information about GPS visit our ezGuide 2 http://gps.ezguide2.com </bio>

<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/glyconutrients" rel="tag">Glyconutrients were virtually unknown as little as 10 years ago. The whole group of carbohydrates and saccarides was largely neglected. With the advent of Glycobiology scientists have since come to learn an increasing amount about these vital nutrients.

Dr McAnalley did some of the first research with Glyconutrients in 1995. He developed and filed patents for Glyconutrient formulas in 1996. Scientists began to realize the importance of polysaccharides and Glyconutrients in the body and how taking supplements with these nutrients can be very beneficial to your health.

He and his research staff started their work when they isolated and researched acemannan from the Aloe Vera, plant. Aloe polymannose (acemannan) is a polysaccharide that is nontoxic. Many of the health benefits from this ancient healing plant can be credited to this natural polysaccharide. Since that time Dr McAnalley has invented over 66 patented products. He is a renowned speaker and held many prominent positions.

Because of his pioneer work on Polysaccerides and Glyconutrients a whole new research is being conducted into these nutrients. This is called Glycobiology (the study of Glyconutrients) Scientists are discovering more and more about the uses of these substances and their important functions in the body.

Having neglected the study of carbohydrates for so long scientists are just now taking steps to understand the complex make up of this class of foods. As they dig deeper they are uncovering the mysteries of the body functions and how the cells actually communicate with each other. They are also discovering the body's natural healing mechanisms and how this can be improved with these vital nutrients.

Scientists are also studying the pharmacokinetics of these substances. This is the study of how these Glyconutrients, polysaccharides, disaccharides and monosaccharide absorb, excrete, effect metabolism and react with the body.

With this Glycobiology research scientists can uncover all the different uses these nutrient have and unlock the different chemical compounds found within the complex carbohydrate family of foods. As they unlock the compounds and chains of saccarides they will get more insight into these substances and see how they can improve our health.

Dr McAnalley's long years of work have paved the way for other scientists and research students to continue in their quest for more information about the carbohydrate family of foods (polysaccharides, and Glyconutrients). As they continue to learn more we shall see more information on how we can improve our health with these vital nutrients.

Many nutritional supplements are being developed for these Glyconutrients. One of the most well known is Ambrotose. This supplement was developed by Mannetech and provides all the components required for your body to manufacture Glyconutrients. This is useful to you, as the foods we eat today do not have enough of this vital nutrient for our bodies to maintain a good state of health. When you take these supplements you can help your body heal and maintain its health and improve your lifestyle by being the healthy person you should be. <bio>Zach Thompson is a Glyconutrients Consultant.
For any of us who have been lost while driving, the road map has been our guiding light, identifying roadways and landmarks to help us find our way. But gone are the days of tri-folded paper maps that require the use of illumination and attention taken from the road. The modern Global Positioning System -- or GPS -- has transformed the process by which we find our way. But, contrary to popular belief, GPS navigation is not a new invention designed for strictly consumer use.

The Global Positioning System marked its beginnings in the 1970s but seeds of its existence were sown prior to that. We first saw the possibilities of satellite navigation with the launching of Sputnik in 1957. Russian scientists who were monitoring the progress of Sputnik found that they could track its movement based on radio waves; this set the foundation for GPS. The U.S. Navy used an elementary form of GPS in the 1960s when they used six satellites to help their submarines pinpoint their location. But GPS as we know it was designed and implemented by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1978 when they launched the first operational satellite.

Today, 24 satellites circle the earth and provide an enormous amount of information in terms of plotting location. A derivative of this technology in modern times has been GPS navigation -- a system that allows drivers to map their routes. GPS navigation comes in a portable unit that can be removed and transferred from vehicle to vehicle when needed. But because of the growing popularity associated with this system, GPS navigation units are now mounted as standard equipment in newer cars. Of course, GPS navigation is also essential to water navigation as used by boats and ships.

But GPS navigation is not solely for the use of vehicles. Outdoor enthusiasts -- with an eye towards safety -- will often carry a hand-held GPS navigation device; the modern equivalent of a compass.

GPS navigation has allowed us to explore new terrain as we venture forth with confidence, knowing that, no matter what, we will find our way. <bio>For easy to understand, in depth information about GPS visit our ezGuide 2 http://gps.ezguide2.com </bio>

Born on January 10, 1903 (103 years old), Herbert Hamrol is one of the oldest employees at the grocery store where he works arranging shelves two days a week.

"I've been there going on 68 years. Two days a week -- and you wouldn't want to work for nicer people."

But this year his celebrity status has increased ten-fold, because he is one of the Eyewitness survivors of the 1906 San Francisco quake (the San Francisco earthquake and fire of April 18, 1906 - 05:12 AM local time), which killed thousands of people and nearly destroyed the city -- More than 3000 Deaths, Injuries: ~225,000, Property Damage: $ 400,000,000 in 1906 $

"As small as I was, I remember my mother carrying me down the stairs with her left arm as she held onto the banister," said Hamrol, trying to recall memories from 100 years ago this week, memories from the day that transformed his life.

Painful memories Hamrol and his family lived downtown, where his father worked as a grocer and his mother took care of the children. He remembers the family having to pack up and leave for Chicago to stay with relatives after the quake. After just a few days in the Windy City, the family came back to the Bay Area. His parents seldom spoke of the tragic day. "I think it was just too painful for them," he explained. Hamrol has one enduring memory - the feeling of his mother's arm.

"She carried me in her left arm and used her right hand to grab the stair rail," said the 103-year-old Hamrol. "That's all I remember."

Like Hamrol, Violet Lyman was just three when the estimated 7.8 magnitude quake ((The "traditional" magnitude of 8.3 for this earthquake was based on work by Richter [1958]. More recent research indicates that estimates in the range from 7.7 to 7.9 are more reliable.)) shook her house so hard it threw her uncle out of bed. Her family survived and managed to relocate, but she remembers how many others were not so lucky.

"It was tough because people had no homes, no food, no nothing," said Lyman. Violet Lyman, could still see a cow running along a street and smell smoke from the fires.

The quake left more than 225,000 people homeless. Many of them lived in tent cities set up throughout the area.

Chaos and panic The oldest person who survived the quake is 109-year-old Chrissie Mortensen remembered the smell of smoke from a city in flames.

"People gathered their possessions, taking carts, or whatever they had, to move out to the park, or any place they could camp," recalled Mortensen, who was in third grade at the time.

Lyman's family decided to leave the city. Although the quake didn't destroy her home, food was so scarce that her mother had to wait in line every day for rations distributed by the Navy (U.S. Navy Operations During the 1906 Earthquake and Fire : U.S. Navy Firefighting Operations, Operations of the U.S.F.S. Chicago During the San Francisco Fire, Operations of the U.S.S. Boston, Operations of the U.S.S. Princeton, Establishment of Curtin Hospital, Praise for Lieutenant Freeman, Gov. Pardee's Belated Letter of Thanks to the U.S. Navy).

One day an officer noticed her mother wearing a sailor cap and asked if anyone in the family was in the Navy. Her mom answered "yes," and was told to pack up her things. The next day several officers moved the whole family up to Vallejo, where they remained.

Celeb status 100 years later San Francisco celebrated and mourned an infamous anniversary early this morning, 100 years to the minute after the city shook and burned in the great earthquake and fire of 1906.

This year Lyman will participate in a 1906 quake anniversary event.

"It's taken me over 100 [years] to become famous!" she quips.

And a century later, Hamrol says he and other survivors are proud to call themselves native sons and daughters of San Francisco -- a city that went through one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history.

"I think it's a marvelous achievement that the city of San Francisco has done to come back from something like that," he declared. <bio>My name is Charlie, I first came to the bay area with friends in 1971, shortly after my return from Vietnam. In week six the best three games are Air Force-Navy, BYU-Utah State and Utah-Oregon State. However, we think you'd be better off getting BYU Cougars tickets if you had to choose only one. Because the Utah game is on Thursday, the BYU game is on Friday, and the Air Force game is Saturday, you don't have to decide if you don't want to. But if you can only get tickets for one game, make sure they're BYU Cougars football tickets.

1.BYU-Utah State: Not only is this a rivalry game out in Utah, but it's also a chance for the Cougars to deliver yet another decisive reason to the BCS that they deserve to get into the top five. Right now the Cougars are 4-0 with a No. 8 ranking, ranked No. 11 in the nation in total offense. It would be a miracle if the Aggies made a game of it, but even still counting them out at home is not an option.

2.Utah: Oregon: Fresh off their win over then-No. 1 USC, the Oregon State Beavers will take on No. 15 Utah, an undefeated team that's been getting a lot of buzz lately. The Utes and the Beavers are a very, very close second here. We gave BYU-Utah State the edge because they're traditional rivals. Will Oregon State have another upset in them? Or was last week a fluke. We'll find out on the national stage for a Thursday night game.

3.Navy-Air Force: An Armed Forces rivalry. Both teams with winning records. http://Accuscore.com says that the Falcons have the edge in this one, 60-40, but my gut says that Navy's not going to give up easily. This will come down to the fourth quarter, but I see the superior air game of (you guessed it) Air Force prevailing in the end.

4.UNLV-Colorado State: UNLV is 3-2 and Colorado State is 2-2, which makes this game more compelling than the last two on the list. On paper this looks like a very even matchup, with not a lot separating either team. We give the edge to Colorado State because they're at home and they managed to hold Houston, the nation's No. 1 team in total offense, to just 25 points (and beat them) two weeks ago.

5.Wyoming-New Mexico: New Mexico has a chance to rack up some points against Wyoming, as the Cowboys are coming off two straight losses where they've given up more than 40 points. Should be a high scoring affair with New Mexico coming out on top.

6.TCU-San Diego State: TCU looks much better on paper, but don't let the records fool you. San Diego State, even at 1-3, can do a lot of damage through the air. This is the game that's most likely to be a blowout, but that's only bad for fans of the Aztecs. If you're getting TCU tickets, then this might be the game of the week for you.<bio>The preceding article was written by Brent Warnken and sponsored by one of the most popular places to get sold out tickets, StubHub. If you are looking for BYU Cougars football tickets, or sports tickets like baseball tickets, basketball tickets, football tickets, soccer tickets, college sports tickets, or even concert tickets and theater tickets, Stubhub.com is your best bet.</bio>

There are as many different writing styles as there are writers. Some meticulously develop their characters, while the plot sneaks stealthily up on you. Other writers prefer to put the plot first and let the characters develop along with the storyline.

There is no doubt in my mind that Paul Mark Tag belongs to the second group. He wastes not one word on character development, preferring to launch into the plot at a speed approaching Mach 1. Now don't get me wrong, this is not a bad thing, it is just a writing style.

Prophecy has at its very heart a very interesting precept. The ability to foresee the future, some call it, a gift, some call it a curse.

Set in the very near future (2009) Prophecy goes to work. An old safe is found on a construction site, it also happens to be the site of the great Johnstown flood of 1889. The town was destroyed, and its 2,200 inhabitants met a watery grave when a sportsman's dam gave way. The only thing inside of this rusty old safe is a sealed bottle containing a letter. The letter was purportedly written by one of the Johnstown victims, Ms. Augusta Schmidt. The disturbing aspect is that the letter was written prior to the flood, the day before to be exact, and it details her choice to stay and die with her family, rather than run for safety.

Since the late 1940's the super powers, and some of the not quite super powers have expanded huge sums of money chasing the goal of ESP. He who owns the view of the future, owns the future, is the argument used.

Paul Mark Tag introduces us to a new explanation for the phenomenon, ESP is in the human genome. It is a rare naturally occurring mutation in the DNA. So rare, it may occur only once in every 200 million people. Prophecy is based on a plot line where both American and Russian scientists have discovered the gene mutation, and the ensuing battle between the interested parties to conquer the gene.

Our heroes are Navy scientists Dr. Victor Mark Silverstein and his assistant Linda Kipling, neither of which are DNA experts, but rather meteorologists. They become the central focal point of the various groups when it seems like they hold the key to this strange 'prophecy gene.' Rogue CIA operatives, a senator with Middle Eastern connections, and the very shady organization known as The Blade Of Sinai all become obsessed with owning the Prophecy Gene.

While the plot line sometimes lacks credibility, and the characters are ever so slightly over the top, don't be put off. This book was designed to be a wild ride on the wings of escapism, and it certainly delivers. This is just the sort of novel to lose yourself in these dreary winter days.

You can get your copy from Amazon. Paul Mark Tag also has a web site with information about Prophecy and his first novel Category 5. Until he retired in 2001 to write fiction full-time, his work revolved around meteorology and his career with the Naval Research Laboratory. <bio>Simon Barrett is an adult educator in Calgary, Alberta.
It might sound kind of crazy, but I absolutely love my wife's cardigans. For those who are wondering, cardigans are a certain type of sweater. From what I've seen, they are usually made from a thin fabric and have buttons all the way up the front. I've always been someone who attaches particular pieces of clothing to memories and events, so maybe that is why I really love her cardigans.

The first time I remember seeing my wife in a cardigan sweater was when I picked her up for our first date many years before she became my wife. I'll never forget how innocent and nervous she looked, and that she was wearing a navy cardigan with her skirt. She explained to me later that she had almost twenty cardigans when we met and that it took her nearly an hour to settle on wearing the navy one.

Another time I remember my wife and her cardigans was when she accompanied my family on a three week trip to Italy just before we were married. My parents invited her to go with me, my siblings and their spouses, and it made for quite a great family trip. I was at her apartment the night before we were leaving and she was having the hardest time packing her clothes. She wanted to be comfortable on our trip, yet she wanted to impress our family, and so she was trying to find the best clothes she had. I remember laughing at her and saying that her clothes didn't matter, and eventually she let me help her pick a few of her best cardigans to take along on the trip.

In the ten years I have known my wife, cardigans are the one kind of clothing that she has never gotten sick of. I've seen her replace almost every other article of clothing she owns, but when it comes to her cardigans, they just keep getting more and more piled up in her closest. Fortunately for me, I'm told, I find my wife's little obsession with cardigans to be rather funny. I guess it would drive me crazy if I didn't.

As you'll probably guess, my wife also brought a few cardigans on our honeymoon. Each time she'd pull one out to wear I'd smile. By the time we married the fact that she loved to wear cardigans was so her that I just had to smile each time she chose to wear one for dinner or anything else.

So I guess I love my wife's cardigans because of all the memories I have with her wearing them and because they are such a staple of her wardrobe. It's the small things in life that really mean something, and her cardigans mean something special to me. <bio>Triston Huntsmin is busy as an author, husband and father.
The discovery of pheromones in 1959 led to several developments in the areas of relationships and behaviors. Pheromones were originally associated with the chemical substances that animals usually excrete to send a message to their own species. Further research on the topic widened the definition of the word pheromones to include other species such as human beings. In fact, pheromones in humans became one of the favorite subjects of researchers all over the world.

Technically, pheromones in humans are linked to the reproductive process and the attraction between men and women. According to studies, the effects of pheromones in humans can be largely detected in the relationship between the mother and child. Studies have shown that infants usually display instinctive attachments to their mothers through the smell, texture and sounds that can be associated with the mother especially when she is nursing.

Like in the case of animals and insects where the young often pick up messages through the pheromones left by their mothers, infants display distinctive characteristics of recognition. Such recognition led scientists to believe that pheromones in humans also function much like the pheromones in other species although in a less pronounced manner.

Aside from the studies conducted on the relationships between mother and child, there have been studies conducted regarding the effects of pheromones in humans when it comes to attracting the opposite sex. Although there has been much criticism regarding this matter and how it was not acceptable to some people that attraction between a male and female human being could be reduced to a simple interplay between the pheromones in humans, several scientists have made some discoveries in this area.

According to some studies, pheromones in humans play a big role when it comes to facilitating attraction. In most instances, the effect of pheromones in humans is termed as the X factor that makes some people more appealing to certain groups of people. Scientists believe that like the insects which send out genetic coding when they excrete pheromones to attract their mate, pheromones in humans may also contain some kind of genetic coding which may be easier to decipher by certain types of people.

Do pheromones in humans really work like the pheromones in insects and animals? A number of scientists would like to believe that they do. However, there are also many who vigorously object to such a conclusion because if we equate pheromones in human beings with that of other species, this could mean that like animals, humans could be made to falsely respond to certain synthetic forms of pheromones. <bio>Tisha Diaz recommends scented and unscented pheromones for men and women at http://www.pheromonespro.com/ where you can also get free pheromone samples and more in-depth information in the pheromone community forums. </bio>
