Whilst most people have heard of psychologists and psychiatrists (although people often confuse the two!) and understand them to be professionals qualified to work within the field of mental-health, many are not so sure about the professional skills an occupational therapist posses and how they can be helped by this profession.

I am an Occupational Therapist and my specialist area is working within mental-health settings or in the community with people experiencing mental-health or emotional difficulties. I decided to write this article to explain what occupational therapist does and is trained to do within the field of mental-health.

Occupational Therapists believe that people have the ability to influence their own health and well-being through their occupations. Within occupational therapy the term "occupation" is used in its widest sense to refer to the wide variety of roles and activities that a person engages in during everyday life. Occupational Therapists recognize that occupations give structure and meaning to a person's life. Occupational Therapists believe that if a person is not able to engage in an adaptive way with occupations that are important and meaningful to them, this can have a detrimental effect on their well-being.

It is this approach to physical, psychological and social dysfunction that makes the Occupational Therapy profession unique. Occupational therapists are concerned with treating the effect of illness or injury as it relates to the persons ability to function. For example, an Occupational Therapist working within the specialist area of hand rehabilitation, would be very knowledgeable in biological sciences and physical medicine and be able to communicate and work allied to surgeons and physiotherapist colleagues working in this area. The difference would be that whilst the physiotherapist may focus on the restoration of, movement, and strength of the hand muscles, the Occupational Therapist would focus on the persons ability to use the hand during activity and occupations. So, an occupational therapist may spend time retraining the person to be able to grip a telephone or sign their name, if these were activities the person highlighted as important for them to work on.

Occupational Therapists have developed their own theories about occupation and also draw from the academic discipline occupational science. In addition, occupational therapists also need to understand information from a variety of other disciplines because they work with people experiencing illness, disease and social problems. Therefore, during the three to four years degree level training, an occupational therapist will be taught from disciplines such as sociology, psychology, psychiatry, physical medicine, developmental theory and biological sciences such as anatomy and physiology. Occupational Therapy's knowledge base includes these disciplines.

Occupational Therapists work in such a variety of settings and it would be impossible to have an in-depth understanding of information from all of the disciplines mentioned. Therefore, occupational therapists will usually specialise in an area after a few years of their career and develop a deeper understanding of theories and practices that are specific to their chosen area.

For example, an Occupational Therapist working within the field of mental-health will become knowledgeable about information from psychological and psychiatric disciplines and use such information and techniques in their everyday practice. They will also work alongside professionals from such disciplines, the OT's role to bring their unique understanding of occupational theories and models to the professional skills mix.

Occupational therapy has organized the vast amount of information from other disciplines into frames or reference. These frames of reference contain complementary theories that can be applied within a specific area of practice (Creek, 1997). Occupational Therapists specializing in mental health draw from frames of reference such as cognitive, cognitive behaviour, human developmental, occupational behaviour, psychodynamic and rehabilitative. Again, which frame of reference the occupational therapist used will depend on the unique needs of the client and also what is favoured by the setting in which they work or which approach is most supported by clinical evidence of effectiveness.

Occupational therapists working within the field of mental-health today, will often become very familiar and competent at working from and using techniques from the cognitive behavioural therapy frame of reference because this approach is currently very popular and well-researched. I now practice privately, working with individuals experiencing psychological, emotional and behavioural problems and my main frame of reference is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Edinburgh.

In sum, occupational therapists are highly qualified and professional trained healthcare practitioners who draw from the same knowledge base as other well -known professions, whist at the same time having a unique focus that is occupational in nature. Occupational therapists focus on the person and their life as a whole as opposed to just focusing on symptoms and illness labels. Occupational Therapy is available from the NHS and there are now more and more occupational therapists practicing privately. The college of occupational therapists would be able to provide you with a list of private practitioners with specialist skills in different areas. I am able to offer Occupational Therapy, Edinburgh and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Edinburgh.

For the protection of consumers and UK residents, the United Kingdom has instigated a system of certified energy assessor professionals to measure the efficiency of the energy use in each of its residences. The focus and the mission behind the legislation is to encourage both residential and commercial installation and use of green energy and renewable energy resources.

Each certificate for each energy assessor has to be produced by those with the federal government has determined qualified and competent to do so. The UK government is still evaluating additional measures to verify the competence of each energy assessor.

At this point in time, the legislation in the UK for evaluating an energy assessor says that she or he must be suitably competent or qualified to produce an energy assessment. By suitably qualified the legislature means someone who has experience and or learning and training equal to the requirements of the National Occupational Standard regulations for that occupation.

An energy assessor of the UK government is going to have the responsibility of completing primary tasks that relate to the newest of the United Kingdom measures for energy efficiency. While energy assessment is now offered by various organizations, only a portion of these energy assessors are actually trained and have earned an Energy Performance Display Certificate. This certificate is what gives them the authority to call themselves an accredited energy assessor. Each energy assessor must know and follow the newest version of the UK governments National Calculation Methodology. There are several different methodologies, dependent on whether a structure is residential and or about to be sold or rented, under construction, or of mixed use.

An energy assessor needs to meet two criteria in order to practice. The first is the energy assessor qualification, a document of energy inspection that shows technical competence. In the process of being updated by the National Occupational Standard, the qualification will be approved by the national Qualifications and Curriculum Agency.

An energy assessor also needs accreditation. Accreditation may be possible in several specializations such as construction, commercial and residential. The scope of qualification will cover many energy inspection areas. An energy assessor will be evaluated in his or her assessment of energy performance, perhaps in buildings under construction, in rental properties or in single family homes, for example. Each energy assessor is only allowed to conduct energy inspections in the area or areas covered by her or his current accreditation and qualification.

Additional limitations may be placed on an energy assessor beyond the types of dwellings or circumstances. An energy assessor might, for example, be determined certified for a specified number of years, after which he or she might have to retrain, upgrade his or her skills and or retest for a new certification.

Several companies in the United Kingdom have the approval of the Secretary of State to oversee the accreditation for energy assessors who wish to evaluate the energy efficiency of existing structures. These companies are RICS, Northgate, NES, Elmhurst and BRE. Many labour unions offer classes and certification and recertification training for energy assessors as well. <bio>James Copper is a writer for http://www.propertycareerskills.co.uk </bio>

The ONET Occupational Database

The information I will describe below was developed by United States Government agencies including but not limited to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The ONET database is a treasure trove of occupational data and is the largest of its kind.

At the heart of the process is a concept called the ONET Content Model. Go to www.onetonline.org to read along. It will be helpful for your career search to be acquainted with the job titles that the leading occupational source identifies as related occupations.

How They Do It

In order for the ONET database to provide what I call the 'transition trees' for every occupation, they needed to develop a codification and classification system that they call the SOC taxonomy. SOC stands for Standard Occupational Classification and the taxonomy is a group of standardized characteristics they use to develop job profiles in hundreds of occupations. The taxonomy includes 812 occupational classifications/profiles today.

Why It is Important for You

The ONET database is the only database that combines and relates occupational classifications with Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.(KSA's). It is the KSA library of characteristics that make up the backbone of every occupational profile. Each worker possess a unique set of knowledge, skills, and abilities -- but you also share commonalities among and between many other occupational profiles. These are referred to as the 'related occupations' that are discussed and analyzed below.

The SOC Taxonomy

Here is an example of how the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) taxonomy model works. The SOC was developed by the Department of labor to classify the entire population of occupations. Occupations that share knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics are grouped within the same SOC family. Most of the occupations titles are strongly related, but sometimes titles you might think are related are not. I tested this theory on two titles that I assumed would be related, but found out otherwise.

I have known several computer programmers and many technical people who are also amateur musicians. I've read that the reason is that programmers and musicians share a love of mathematics and patterns. To test that theory I analyzed the ONET taxonomy to see how closely Computer Programmers and Musicians were related.

Computer Programmers are categorized under SOC 15.
Musicians are classified under SOC 27.

A search for 'Computer Programmer' returned 504 occupations sorted by relevancy.
Music Directors and Music Teachers had a relevance score of 1 out of 100. This is the lowest score.
Mathematical science teachers also had a relevance of 1 out of 100.

According to the experts at ONET, there is a weak link between computer programmers and musicians on the ONET Relevancy scale.

Next, I followed the daisy chain of 'related occupations'. Here is what I found:

Level 1. Computer Programmer (SOC 15) is related to Computer Operator (SOC 43)
Level 2. Computer Operator is related to Desktop Publisher (SOC 43)
Level 3: Desktop Publisher is related to Film and Video Editors (SOC 27)
Level 4: Film and Video Editors is related to Fine Artists, Including Painters, Sculptors, and Illustrators (SOC 27)

I searched on the Musician Occupation and found this:

Level 1: Musician (instrumental) (SOC 27) is related to Film and Video Editors (SOC 27).
Yet, there is no direct link from that title to Musician. The KSA profile seems to flow in one direction.

Conclusion:

Everyone has an "X" factor. While the taxonomy is a valuable tool and I encourage everyone to use the ONET system, let's recognize that creativity and imagination cannot be placed in a box.<bio>Perry Maisin is a business communicator with 25 years of experience in resume writing, business process documentation, and technical staffing.
Occupational health and safety and public health and safety are two areas that have become increasingly important, but also easier to manage, in recent years. There has been an increase in awareness of Health and Safety concerns in the general public and employees.

The increasingly litigious cultural atmosphere has brought health and safety to the forefront of most public and business decisions. This has been paralleled, however, by a growth in the availability of health and safety professionals, and also in better and more detailed health and safety information on the Internet. More help is available at http://www.health-safety-now.info..

Occupational health and safety measures can take many forms - from the management of physical risk in your place of work, to employee health and safety concerns about noise or stress levels.

The important thing for businesses is to have a plan for every possible health and safety situation that could arise, or that all could be feasibly predicted anyway.

Depending on your business area, there may be an organization that monitors the health and safety in your workplace - this particularly applies to dangerous locations such as railways, nuclear installations and mines, and to workplaces involved with vulnerable people, such as nursery schools, care homes and hospitals.

The occupational health and safety of these businesses will probably be monitored and checked regularly by an independent organization.

If such a group does not cover your place of work, it is recommended that you invest in a professional health and safety inspection. Alternatively you could appoint a permanent group of occupational health and safety experts, depending on the size and needs of your enterprise.

Public health and safety may be monitored by a government agency, or independent health and safety professionals may be employed to judge the health and safety of a prospective project or place of work.

Public health and safety should take into account both the health and safety of the public sector employees and of members of the general population whose health and safety may be affected by a project. <bio>Pearl Deloria has an SME management background, specializing in health and safety issues. This importance is recognised by the Independent Financial Advisers who help and advise employees and companies alike on the benefits of a company or occupational pension scheme.

Types of occupational pension

If the company offers an occupational pension scheme, this generally means that it also makes contributions to its employees' pensions and may also include benefits to the spouse, partner or dependents of the employee in the event of their death.

Although the particular scheme in place in any one company will vary from workplace to workplace, it will fall into one of two broad categories:

-	Final salary schemes -- as the name suggests, this type of scheme bases the pension on the salary the employee is earning in the final years of his employment and the number of years he or she has worked for that employer;

-	Money purchase schemes -- individual employees receive pension benefits based on the amount of money that has been paid into a pension fund and the performance of the investments in that fund.

Who pays?

Company pensions generally rely on regular monthly contributions being made by both employee and employer, based on a percentage of the employee's salary. Some of the benefits of such schemes -- "death in service", for example -- are unlikely to continue to be available, however, if the employee has left the company's employment and is a deferred member.

In the case of a money purchase pension scheme, the combined employee and employer contributions remain invested in the pension fund. Annual statements on the current performance of the fund and forecasts of its future performance will continue to be sent to the former employee and deferred member.

Pension transfers

Employees have the option of transferring their accumulated pension from the occupational scheme into a personal pension plan or, if they have changed jobs, into another company scheme.

The implications and costs of doing this, however, are by no means straight forward and anyone thinking of transferring from an occupational pension scheme, or anyone with any questions about company pensions in general, would best seek independent financial advice.<bio>Sean Horton is a Director of Enhanced Wealth, a whole of market mortgage broker and IFA specialising in mortgage advice and the associated areas of company pensions, protection, and life cover.</bio>

They offer various tactics to reduce MSD's (musculoskeletal disorders) in the workplace. Their Outreach and Assistance program, designed to interface with workers directly, is one of four in their "four-pronged" approach to aiding the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. The other aspects of the "four-pronged" approach are: Guidelines, Enforcement and the National Advisory Committee.

Ergonomics is the science of designing and maintaining products, machines and work environments that cause the least stress upon the human body and result in the fewest instances of injury and discomfort. The four prongs of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's approach to ergonomic safety have different areas of focus. The Enforcement branch has to do with the inspections carried out by this and other organizations to assure that work environments are as safe as they can be. When they find organizations that violate standards of ergonomic safety they alert authorities and attempt to alter the situation. The National Advisory Committee branch controls the applications of research related to the study of ergonomics. The Guidelines branch develops industry specific guidelines based on statistics related to ergonomic industries in the workplace. Finally, the Outreach and Assistance branch helps businesses, small and large alike, identify and apply good practices in ergonomics to their workplaces to increase the safety and comfort of their employees.

OSHA releases studies on specific industries to help those industries create a more ergonomically satisfying environment for their employees. One such industry is the Retail Grocery industry. They first identified some of the risks particularly associated with employment in the Retail Grocery industry, specifically, force, repetition, awkward posture and static postures. OSHA maintains that these factors dramatically increase the chances of the Retail Grocery employee of serious injuries and illnesses such as, muscle strains and back injuries, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, Epicondylitis and trigger finger. OSHA identifies certain activities, such as stacking shelves, that place employee's bodies in awkward positions that they must maintain for a period of time. Some of their solutions are as simple as the following, related to icing produce. They recommend a better ice machine that takes the stress of scooping and loading ice away from the worker by letting gravity and the ice machine pour ice into buckets on a cart below the machine. In this way, the ice is ready to be transported when the worker approaches the machine, cutting any bending, scooping and lifting the employee might otherwise have had to perform and making the overall experience more physically pleasant. <bio>Leon Groom writes about http://www.ergo-items.com/keyboards.htm, http://www.ergo-items.com/keyboards/split/ergosplit.htm and http://www.ErgoLance.com </bio>

There are two parts to qualifying as a domestic energy assessor in the UK. The first is assessment, the second is training. Both are provided by the NHER. Lets take a look at what is involved in the assessment of domestic energy assessor candidates.

Called the ABBE Level 3 domestic energy assessor diploma, the certification is a brand new part of qualifying. This requirement to become a domestic energy assessor became available at the end of 2006, as part of the about-to-be-implemented home sale regulations on energy performance compliance. Considered a vocational related qualification (VRQ), it is based on competence.

A would-be domestic energy assessor would achieve this diploma through not only assessment but examination as well. The UK government puts out a National Occupational Standards report, which spells out what a domestic energy assessor candidate would need to do to achieve this diploma.

There are 5 categories of compliance with domestic energy assessor National Occupational Standards. The first category is to work in a professional and effective manner, which would be both assessed and tested. The three parts to this category include the development and maintenance of effective work relationships with coworkers, consumers, vendors and other interested parties.

This category also includes proof that the candidate can manage her or his own resources and time well, that he or she is engaged in self-improvement in work areas, and conducts her or himself in an ethical and professional manner always.

The second category of compliance, for determination of domestic energy assessor qualification, is a look at whether the candidate is prepared for the energy assessment. She or he must agree with and confirm the instruction that must be undertaken for the assessment and must be prepared to conduct relevant inquiries about the property.

The actual performance of energy assessment practices and procedures falls into the third category. Here is where the candidates ability to adequately inspect property and determine the performance of its energy and to record the findings of her or his inspection are assessed.

The fourth and final category of compliance to the standards for domestic energy assessors is the ability of the candidate to produce and explain the required energy performance certificates (EPC.) Include in this category are the specifics of produce the EPC document, issuing it for the homeowner and explaining what is contained therein.

A government regulated UK assessment center is tasked with determining if a candidate qualifies as a domestic energy assessor. The center must ensure that the candidate has obtained the necessary level of energy-efficiency knowledge and skills.

This is determined by the training courses the candidate has completed, and the portfolio of evidence presented that the candidate has performed EPC assessments adequately. The candidate may be instructed to train further, or may be found ready to take the ABBE exam that will certify him or her as a domestic energy assessor. <bio>Pete James runs Energy Assessor Courses for people that want a new career.
RULA is a risk analysis screening tool that provides a rapid assessment of the relative risk relating to a worker's performance. RULA assesses biomechanical and postural loading on the whole body with particular attention to the neck, trunk and upper limbs.

The tool was developed Dr Lynn McAtamney, a co-founder of COPE, leaders in Occupational Ergonomics, in conjunction with Professor Nigel Corlett, of University of Nottingham.

A RULA assessment requires little time to complete, no specialist equipment and the scoring generates an action list which indicated the level of intervention required to reduce the risks of injury due to physical loading on the operator.

RULA is intended to be used as part of a broader ergonomic study. The reliability and validity of the tool was established in a series of studies conducted with VDU users and sewing machine operators.

RULA is of particular assistance in fulfilling the assessment requirements of both the European Community Directive (90/270/EEC) on the minimum safety and health requirements for work with display screen equipment and the UK Guidelines on the prevention of work-related upper limb disorders

Step 1 - Observing and selecting the posture(s) to assess

RULA is used to assess moments of a work cycle by observing the range of postures adopted whilst undertaking tasks prior to selecting the posture(s) for assessment. Depending upon the type of assessment, selection may be made of the longest held posture or what appears to be the worst posture(s) adopted. For example, when the work cycle is long or the postures are varied it may be more appropriate to take an assessment at regular intervals. It will be evident that, if assessments are taken at set intervals over the working period, the proportion of time spent in the various postures can be evaluated.

Step 2 - Scoring and recording the posture

Decide whether the left, right or both upper arms are to be assessed. Score the posture of each body part using the electronic tool. Review the scoring and make any adjustments if required. Select calculation button.

Step 3 - Action Level

The grand score is compared to the Action Level List. Since the human body is a complex and adaptive system, they provide a guide for further action. In most cases, to ensure efficient and effective control of any risks identified, the actions lead to a detailed investigation. This is described further in "Reducing the Risks of Work Related Upper Limb Disorders: A Guide and Methods" available from The Institute for Occupational Ergonomics. <bio>James Bowden is a Director of COPE, the UK's premier occupational Health and Saftey, Occupational Ergonomics and Manual Handling specialists http://www.copeohs.com </bio>

Adults and Asthma

This article talks about Asthma for the grown up and elderly. We know that asthma has many medical implications.

Adult asthma normally comes from one of three conditions. First off, some adults that have had asthma their entire lives or that have had it since childhood are in one condition. In the second, the asthma was there during childhood and then all symptoms of asthma were gone for a period of time and then sometime later in their adult life, asthma has come back. Finally, there are those adults that are first getting asthma during their adult years. In this case, the asthma is almost always brought on by occupational asthma conditions, or poor working conditions or exposure to triggers that over time developed into asthma in the individual.

Anyone that has asthma, including the adult, can find the help that they need in treating and living with it. As you will learn as an asthma patient, there are many types of medications on the market that can be used to treat asthma both in the episodes that you may experience (asthma attacks) as well as in the day to day living arrangements. Those that have had asthma as a child and then had no symptoms of asthma for much of their life only to have it resurface are often the hardest patients to treat. Here, something, possibly contaminants or even infection, has caused the resurgence of the asthma and it is often a severe case when this happens.

In cases where occupational asthma is the culprit, it is often the asthma specialist's first course of action to determine what the trigger is that is causing the asthma outbreaks. Then, the first treatment for this type of asthma will be to avoid that trigger. Of course, your doctor will help you to determine what that is and will work with you to determine just what can be done to help provide you with relief from your asthma. Even as an adult, it is important to seek out the help you need for asthma. <bio>Roger Thompson writes about asthma, health related issues and jobs for http://www.Idohealthcare.com </bio>

Government career outlook predictions aren't developed yet for the Virtual Assistance industry, whether that's because it's a relatively new field or because the tasks done by VAs are as varied as the VAs themselves remains to be seen. One has to examine similar fields and skill-sets to see how VAs will fare in the years to come. By looking at these similar fields, you can see that the growth outlook for Virtual Assistance is above average. The question of "Will this job still be around in 20 years?" can be answered by looking at the services that a specific VA is offering and closely-related "traditional" employment fields.

The most important thing to remember, though, is to keep current with technology and software that can progress your business. If you only know outdated technology, then you and your business are outdated and your clients may go elsewhere for service. Keep adding to your services and learn everything you can about your niche market and what they currently need.

With many businesses restructuring and downsizing (getting rid of middle managers), companies are utilizing more and more secretarial and administrative support staff to take over those duties. If you offer administrative support as a VA, and market yourself as an off-site solution to those downsizing companies, your "job security" looks pretty good. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that you will have competition from on-site employees for these positions.

If you offer more specialized services than administrative support, you have different chances for sustaining an ongoing career. Here are two examples:

If you offer Public Relations (PR)services, your occupational outlook is rosy. With so many different types of organizations -- such as businesses, nonprofits, universities, hospitals and more - looking for media specialists and PR specialists to do more than just "tell their story." Creativity, initiative, good judgment and the ability to communicate effectively are some of the skills necessary to succeed in this job. There's lots of competition in this role, but employment/contracts for PR specialists is expected to grow faster than average, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

If you offer Desktop Publishing services, your occupational outlook is also great. Many companies are beginning to outsource these services, as opposed to having in-house staff. With experience and/or a degree in graphic design or a related field, desktop publishers have a variety of different organizations to market themselves to. VAs offer an affordable alternative to hiring a graphic design firm.

Whether you specialize in desktop publishing and graphic design or public relations or another niche specialty, it's clear that Virtual Assistance is catching on and the VAs who are out there aren't going anywhere. With more and more employers and companies looking to outsource projects turning to offsite personnel to fulfill these needs, the view of using "virtual" workers is changing. It's no longer as common to hear objections such as "How do I know you'll really be working?" when proposing using a VA to someone who never has before. Many people have heard of VAs now or know someone who uses theirs. In most cases, once someone has a VA on their team, they don't turn back to in-house staff to fulfill those duties.

To check out similar fields' occupational outlooks, visit the Occupational Outlook Handbook (2006-07 edition) put out by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics at http://www.bls.gov.. <bio>If you're an aspiring Virtual Assistant, claim your free e-report "Virtual Assistant Business: A Basic Guide to Start Your Own" at http://www.virtualassistantbusiness.com </bio>

Going to this nation's wonderful national parks can be a lot of fun. However, a lot of planning can be required even for short trips.

In this article you'll get 5 tips on how to have a smooth trip the next time you go to a national park.

1. Plan adequately - Trying to just toss some equipment in your backpack or car and go at the last minute is a recipe for a trip that has to be cut short. Even when going on a two day trip, it helps to plan out all of your gear an menus. You should also look to find what permits, if any you will need. Fortunately, this can be accomplished in a few hours by using the internet and contacting the national park service ranger station at the park you intend to go to.

2. Consider other forms of transportation - If trying to get to a distant park, you might find good local buses or even trains. Two examples are in Central California, there is a public bus that goes down the coast and can take you to several great parks. There is also Amtrak, which can be a lot of fun to travel on with a backpack. It is very comfortable and goes near many great outdoor destinations.

3. Keep track of all contact information for the people who are going - It is frustrating when you have planned an outdoor adventure, but due to poor logistics, you are being stalled at some boondocks gas station, because of miscommunications with other people in the group who are arriving by different means. By thoroughly planning out details and being able to contact people as you go, you should avoid these problems.

4. Don't overpack - The boy scout motto is 'be prepared'. This is good advice for most things, except it is possible to be over-prepared, especially when you have to carry those preparations in a backpack! If you have 3 pairs of pants for every contingency, a dutch oven to 'prepare' lasagna, and other such frivolous items, the quality of your outdoors adventure will drastically decrease. Instead, I suggest bringing only the bare essentials (enough to make absolutely sure you can survive), but not much more...then buy what you need as you go.

5. Research different areas to find the trip which is best for you. You don't have to choose the first trip that is suggested. There are literally hundreds of national parks to choose from such as Yellowstone national park, Glacier national park, Yosemite national park, Zion national park, Rocky Mountain national park, Arches national park, Sequoia national park, Grand Canyon national park and Denali national park. You might find it fun to experiment with something new. You can visit http://www.nationalparkfun.com to find a list of national parks in your area.

So follow these tips and you'll definitely avoid some of the mistakes I've made when backpacking, such as bringing way, way, way too much stuff. The less things you bring, the better (as long as you don't put yourself in danger). If you find you need extra provisions along the way, you can always buy them at a mini-mart or supermarket near the park.<bio>J Green is an experience backpacker who has done dozens of multi-day trips.
After deciding to enhance the look and feel of your house, you should gather a few listings of contractors before settling on one. Need help finding a contractor? While general, as well as sub-contractors advertise in the newspaper, telephone book, and the Internet, there are also professional organizations, such as the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), as well as the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), who can locate worthy contractors.

Once you've narrowed down potential contractors, you should check out how he or she conducts their business. For starters, you may contact the local Better Business Bureau to see if any former clients have placed a complaint against them. Also, visiting a job site allows you to see the contractor work on current projects. During a visit, it is important to note the safety, cleanliness, neatness, and conduct of the worker(s). This is a telling sign as to how your home improvement project might be handled.

If you like what you see and have learned after conducting research, you should make an office visit or place a telephone call to potential contractors. When carrying out an interview, you should ask questions that pertain to the size of your project; financial limitations; timelines; dates; scheduling; liability insurance; workers' compensation; licenses and certificates; and previous clients and job experience.

During the selection process, you should ask to see the licenses of potential contractors. You should also know that an occupational license is not acceptable enough to reward a construction project. To get an idea of the type of work they may offer, you should request and contact the references of past customers. When inquiring on payment terms, avoid contractors who ask to be paid in cash or demand large payments before any work is completed.

Once you choose a contractor, it is important to stay on top of their actions. For instance, it is essential to make sure your contractor obtains all of the appropriate permits for major jobs. If your home improvement project involves the addition of a room; creating a second story; or remodeling major areas, it is rather key to choose a contractor that is qualified enough for the job. This means checking credentials and scrutinizing their past work history. Also, before any work is started, a clear and fair contract should be drawn up and signed, which is one of the best ways to protect both the interests of homeowner and contractor. <bio>Visit http://www.contractorrolodex.com/ to help you find a contractor that meets your needs. </bio>

"Employment is nature's physician and is essential for human happiness" Galen, ca 180 AD. In 2003/04 30 million working days were lost to illness that were caused by work related issues. Two million people believed they were suffering from a work related illness in 2003/04. =BD a million people were said to be suffering from stress/depression or anxiety. 183,000 claimed to have breathing or lung problems. Hearing problems were sustained by 81,000, skin problems by 31,000 and heart disease/attack by 66,000.

These harrowing figures are a shocking insight into the abuse of health and safety in the work place. Although these figures have improved slightly now; health concerns due to occupations are still a major problem.

An occupational disease is a chronic ailment that occurs as a result of work. It is when symptoms of diseases are more prevalent in bodies of workers than the general public.

Improving organization, work practices, addressing issues such as workload (over or under), matching workers skills to their jobs and having clear lines of accountability and responsibilities are all appropriate steps to prevent ill health occurring in the work place. The right work patterns, security and ensuring a `happy' work place as well as good communication and safe working practices not only improve the safety of the work place but also creates a better working environment.

Examples of occupational disease are:

=95 Black lung disease =96 normally seen in coal mining industry

=95 Carpel Tunnel Syndrome - occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The symptoms are usually burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers with some people even stating their fingers feel useless and swollen even though they appear fine.

=95 Radiation Sickness =96 seen in the nuclear industry

=95 Byssinosis =96 disease of the lungs caused by breathing in cotton dust or dusts from other vegetable fibers such as flax, hemp, or sisal while at work

=95 COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease =96 the symptoms of COPD are a persistent cough/phlegm, shortness of breath and chest infections. Once the damage of COPD has taken effect it cannot be reversed. COPD is damaged airways in the lungs, causing them to become narrow, making it harder for air to get in and out of the lungs.

=95 Silicosis =96 The Oldest of all work related diseases. It develops over time when dust from Silica is inhaled into the lungs. A persistent cough, with or without sputum, shortness of breath and chest tightness are all symptoms of Silicosis. All of these usually appear over many years of exposure to high levels of Silica dust, with the tissue of the lungs becoming damaged by Fibrosis and being replaced with solid nodules of scar tissue. Even after the exposure stops, the disease still progresses.

=95 Asbestos =96 work related disease due to asbestos exposure can be highly serious. Mesothelioma is cancer of the pleura and asbestosis is a form of lung fibrosis, both of which are a direct result of asbestos, as well as bronchial cancer.

=95 Occupational Lung Disease - covers a range of damage, affecting things such as the tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs (airways), the tiny air sacs where oxygen is transferred from the air we breathe into our blood stream. Other damage may affect the thin lining between our lungs and ribcage. Symptoms include chest pain, prolonged coughing, breathlessness and wheezing

=95 Occupational Asthma =96 it has been said that by 2010, the cases of occupational asthma are to be reduced by 30%. Occupational Asthma remains the most common form of work related illness. Dust from flour and grain; Industrial baking, farm work, grain transport. Wood dust, from hard wood, western red cedar, carpentry, joinery and sawmilling. Colophony, mostly found in soldering fumes but also present in glues and floor cleaners Dust from latex rubber, from jobs involving latex gloves used in nursing and dentist work. Dust from insects and animals are all causes of Occupational Asthma.

The above list is only a small section of work related illness and disease that can affect many employees. <bio>Helen is the web master for Accident Consult; specialists inhttp://www.accidentconsult.com/articles/showarticles/AccidentTypes/1/Acci= dentsatwork.html accidents at work claims. </bio>

As an NLP master practitioner who runs an NLP practice in Herts, I am one of the first to sing the praises of NLP as a therapy tool, as I believe it can be a really effective instrument for change work, when used in the hands of a good NLP practitioner.

However, as an occupational therapist, and having worked in mainstream NHS mental-healthcare, I also believe that NLP at times sends out a misleading vibe, which cannot be said of some of the more traditional therapies. By this I mean that NLP can give the impression of being this magical therapy that will cure people in minutes, when years of psychotherapy, counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy etc. has had little or no effect.

The result of this misconception about NLP, is that clients can turn up for a consultation at NLP Herts, expecting the therapist to wave her magic wand, with little or no effort on their part. Like all therapies, NLP relies heavily on the client's commitment and motivation to want to change.

A good therapist or NLP practitioner will want evidence of this commitment, in terms of the client being willing to engage fully in the process, particularly spending initial therapy sessions learning the fundamental principles of NLP such as the major frames, the communication model and presuppositions.

It is crucial for the client to 'buy into' these principles such as the frame 'being at cause' and to fully understand the impact of the way they filter life experiences on their state and behaviour, before any of the 'magic' can begin.

Unlike other therapies, NLP does have specific techniques such as the Fast Phobia Cure, Swish, Change Personal History and Parts Integration that are rather glamorous. In my opinion, these techniques do work very well, only always when they are supplemented by the more mundane psycho-educational work.

I recently had a highly agitated client turn up for a therapy consultation expecting that I could 'do something' immediately to help him feel better. This client had experience of other more traditional therapies and my hunch is that he would not of expected the same of his psychotherapist!

NLP is not about a therapist doing a technique on a client that will solve all their problems in an instant. It is a highly effective therapy that can lead to new options in thinking and behaviour when the client works alongside the therapist. Like other therapies such as CBT, NLP strategies and any new positive behavioural and emotional habits require practice and hard work by the client.

So, if your looking for a quick fix, NLP isn't it! And any practitioner that tells you otherwise is probably after your money. Don't let this put you off seeking NLP. It is very effective and if you want change in your life and are prepared to work towards it with the therapists support, you will have change. NLP is available at NLP Herts.

Karen Hastings is an NLP Master Practitioner, and a senior mental health Occupational Therapist.
Asbestos is well recognized as a health hazard and is highly regulated. An estimated 1.3 million employees in construction and general industry face significant asbestos exposure on the job. Heaviest exposures occur in the construction industry, particularly during the removal of asbestos during renovation or demolition.

Asbestos fibers can enter the air or water from the breakdown of natural deposits and manufactured asbestos products. Small diameter fibers and particles may remain suspended in the air for a long time and be carried long distances by wind or water before settling down.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is strongly related to exposure to asbestos particularly occupational exposure. Mesothelioma is the most serious asbestos causing disease. Mesothelioma is a disease that is almost 100% preventable; the only known cause is via exposure to the deadly mineral Asbestos.

There isn't any cause of mesothelioma other than asbestos, and it's obvious that the major source of the substance is Kubota. According to various researches done, the odds of developing mesothelioma decreased 6.3 percent for every 10 kilometers farther from the asbestos source. Mesothelioma has a latency period of 20 to 50 years after the first exposure to asbestos.

Many employers and the manufacturers of asbestos knew about the dangers when they exposed employees to this material.

Indeed, reports Forbes magazine: "asbestos defendants are very likely now paying compensation for every occupational disease known to man. Tomorrow's epidemic: The epidemic of asbestos disease is expected to peak in the next decade. Usually, a period of 10 to 40 years or more passes before the asbestos victim exhibits the first asbestos disease symptoms.

There is a long latency period between exposure and the development of asbestos disease symptoms. Each state has its own set of deadlines, called statutes of limitation, for allowing victims of asbestos disease to file lawsuits. The victims of asbestos disease deserve to have these issues clearly and squarely addressed. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause permanent and irreversible damage and disease to vital organs. All types of asbestos cause disease and death. <bio>Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is strongly related to exposure to Asbestos.
Quick, name the city in the United States that offers nurses the most career opportunities. If you guessed New York City, you hit the nail on the head. In 2005, there were nearly 70,000 jobs for skilled nurses in New York City. But there's more to the demographic than just numbers. When it comes to nursing jobs, New York is number one in more ways than one.

Salaries

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean salary for a registered nurse nationally is $52,810. In New York, 72% of all registered nurses are earning more than $55,000 annually. The average salary for a registered nurse in New York is $64,000 as compared to the national average of $49,840. (all statistics from BLS). A licensed practical nurse can count on a salary in the $30,000-$45,000 range. New York is the single top market for nursing jobs across the country.

Flexibility

Registered and licensed nurses have incredible flexibility in work schedules and types of jobs. Nursing jobs in New York offer a wide range of opportunities that can fit nearly anyone who enjoys working with and helping people. There are nursing jobs available at prestigious teaching hospitals and universities, at inner city clinics, at upscale doctor's offices and in schools or with the health department. A New York nurse might specialize in obstetrics or dermatology, in pediatrics or oncology or in any one of myriad other specialties. Nowhere else in the world is there such a wide variety of nursing jobs available.

Scheduling is every bit as flexible. As hospital and other medical facility administrators try to cope with the shortage of nurses (predicted to hit 800,000 by 2020); they've started offering schedules that fit anyone's way of life. It's not unusual for a nurse to work three twelve hour shifts in a week and have four days off, or work just weekend nights -- for a premium salary.

Career Options

New York has a lot to offer nurses in the way of career opportunities and continuing education. The state is home to some of the best teaching hospitals in the world. Nurses who are ready to move on will find it easy to make a lateral move to a different type of nursing, or to climb the career ladder in nearly any nursing specialty field imaginable. Here are just a few 'non-traditional' New York nursing jobs.

Community Health Nurse

Not all nurses work in hospitals and nursing homes. Community health nursing jobs in New York include on site nursing in transitional residences, or home visit nurses who help people stay in their homes rather than ending up in a nursing home or institution. Working in community health can include being part of ground-breaking research, combating an unexpected epidemic or teaching new young mothers how to care for their babies in their own homes.

Policy Makers

For nurses who want to make a difference on a wide scale, there are many nursing jobs that include opportunities to help make policy. Nurses are integral team members at insurance companies, in government and on hospital boards. As a consultant to city and town councils, nurses help ensure that patient and family needs are met when the big companies make policies that affect nursing and medical care.

Occupational Health Nursing

More and more large businesses are including an on site nurse on their payroll. Occupational health nurses may work for a single company, doing preventive and assessment nursing, or work for a clinic or rehabilitation facility helping patients recover from sports and work-related injuries, or learn to live with limitations caused by their medical conditions. New York is at the forefront of many trends in nursing, and a nurse who chooses to specialize in occupational health will find many nursing jobs in New York.

Teaching Specialties

Nurse educators are very much in demand in any large city, and New York is no exception. Whether teaching nursing in a formal nursing school or delivering continuing education in the form of in-services and specialty courses, there's a place for a nurse with a talent for passing on knowledge to others.

In short, New York has a little of everything for those interested in pursuing a nursing career. From rural nursing to inner city health, there are thousands of open nursing jobs in New York. <bio>Rita Henry is a contributing editor for Nursing Job Finder, the leading job and resource site for the Nursing Industry.
For those most passionate about their music, a job in music education is a natural fit. Far from being a case of andquot;those who can't do, teachandquot;, those who take music education jobs are talented not only as artists but as teachers who want to pass their love of music on to another generation, to ensure that there is always music in the world.

Once upon a time, a degree in music education was seen as a 'fallback option'- the job that would always be there if a performing or production career didn't work out. That time is long gone now as states have cut funding for enrichment education across the country. While the job outlook for music teachers is still good, the Occupational Outlook Handbook says that jobs for musicians and teachers will grow at about average or a little faster than average rates through 2014 - school departments, private institutions and universities have the luxury of being able to be choosy about whom they hire to fill music education jobs.

One of the best ways to hear about music education jobs and openings is to establish a network of contact within the music education community. While basic networking is good, there are ways to network more effectively to concentrate your focus on finding and improving your chances of being hired for music education jobs.

Network locally.

Lucky you, you actually have three different sources of local networking that can help you narrow your job search focus. As an educator, get involved in local organizations for teachers and get your name out there. If you've made contacts while interning and practice-teaching, keep up with them, and ask their advice and guidance in your career path. By all means, let them and others know that you're looking for a job in music education. Other teachers are often the first to know that one of their own is leaving.

School department contacts are invaluable.

In most cities, the school department must post vacancies internally before advertising them to the general public. Those vacancies are often posted on a bulletin board in each school within the district. Let teacher friends and contacts know that you're looking and ask them to keep an eye out for you. Knowing that a vacancy is posted internally can give you a leg up on the competition and cue you to submit your resume and cover letter for music education jobs before they're advertised.

Network online.

Join national and local music teachers associations online, particularly those that hold regular events, symposiums and have a discussion board. Many of them post job openings for members, and more than a few allow members to post job leads and requests for job leads on their boards. Some organizations that you might consider joining include:

Technology Institute for Music Educators (http://www.ti-me.org/)

Music Teachers National Association (http://www.mtna.org)

Teachers.net Chat boards (http://teachers.net/mentors/music/)

The National Association for Music Education (http://www.menc.org/)

Keep in mind that in networking, you get out what you put in. Don't just join a group and start soliciting for music education jobs. Look for what you can offer - the more you become involved the more visible you'll become and the more willing others will be to recommend jobs to you. <bio>Rita Henry is a contributing editor for Jobs In Music, the leading job and resource site for the Music Industry.
