It is as if we are allowing ourselves to be sculpted by bland and repetitive consumerism, our individuality being chiselled away by a tedium we cannot even be bothered to challenge with any will. <br /><br /> Life need not be like that. We are each blessed with a powerful mind; but normally people have forgotten or, most likely, never even knew how, to use it. It is such a waste of our own greatest resource. <br /><br /> One way to start to extricate ourselves from the mindless quicksand is to gently exercise our minds, using mindfulness and meditation as a way of bringing ourselves more emphatically into the real world, and start the process of exercising control over our minds and our lives. <br /><br /> Creating a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/mindfulness+meditation" rel="tag">mindfulness meditation</a> is a gentle but powerful exercise. But how do you go about it? <br /><br /> A Simple Mindfulness <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/meditation+exercise" rel="tag">Meditation Exercise</a> <br /><br /> As with any <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/meditation+session" rel="tag">meditation session</a>, you need to get into a relaxed and comfortable position, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/eyes+closed" rel="tag">eyes closed</a>, and then commence with deep <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nasal+breathing" rel="tag">nasal breathing</a>, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/focusing" rel="tag">focusing</a> your thoughts on the breathing to ease yourself into a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/meditative+state" rel="tag">meditative state</a>. <br /><br /> Once you feel that you are calmed by your breathing and that your breath is under your rhythmic control, then you can move on to focusing on your own body, a part at a time. I was first taught this at yoga class, where we were taught to concentrate first of all on the left foot, focusing on it from a position above ourselves. Then move up the body slowly, left ankle, knee, thigh and so on. When reaching your head, you then do the same in reverse on the other side of the body: right shoulder, right elbow, right hand and so on. <br /><br /> Once you have completed your tour of your own body, as if you were someone else examining it, then it is time to open your eyes and increase your mindfulness of your surroundings. <br /><br /> To do this, focus on any object in the room; it does not have to be anything special: a cup on the coffee table, a vase, a plastic flower, anything. Try to maintain that focus for half a minute, and then move on to any other object. You can repeat this several times, always maintaining a focus on your own body and your own breathing, creating a triple harmony with each object on which you focus. <br /><br /> By using this simple mindfulness meditation you are increasing awareness both of yourself and your surroundings, in a very gentle and easy way. It can serve as a prelude to some mental task, as well as being part of an ongoing mindfulness campaign to strengthen and expand the use of your own mind. <br /><br /> For example, most days I write, but sometimes I just do not seem able to concentrate on what I am supposed to be writing about. This article therefore is necessarily an overview and brief introduction to the wide range of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/buddhist+meditation" rel="tag">Buddhist meditation</a>.<br><br>Buddhism has taught meditation to its adherents since the 5th century BC. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/gautama+buddha" rel="tag">Gautama Buddha</a> (or simply "the Buddha", meaning "he who has achieved enlightenment"), the founder of the religion and its supreme teacher sought escape from this world and found it in meditation. Since then, this has been passed on to his followers.<br><br>Broadly speaking, Buddhist meditation has as its goal the achievement of a deeper state of relaxation, or a heightened sense of awareness, a knowledge of the true nature of things. Ultimately, all meditation is seen as the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/path+to+enlightenment" rel="tag">path to enlightenment</a> (a state in which a person is freed from all delusions about the world) and nirvana(a similar state, where one is free from greed and hate). Buddhism teaches that the root of all suffering and pain in the world is ignorance combined with greed and desire. On reaching nirvana, the soul is freed from all suffering, and indeed from the very cycle of rebirth.<br><br>Techniques for meditation vary between different schools of thought -- for example, there are hundreds of traditional methods of achieving mindfulness (a state of mind in which you are strongly aware of the present moment and distant from your own thoughts) and there are thousands of mental visualisations used in meditation. Different forms of meditation are designed to develop different desirable characteristics: concentration, loving-kindness, compassion, wisdom, freedom and so forth. Many techniques are common however, such as a focus on breathing as a means to reach tranquility and awareness. This method, known as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/anapanasati" rel="tag">Anapanasati</a> has been recommended as a method by itself to reach nirvana.<br><br>This technique usually involves sitting comfortably, back straight and with no difficulty breathing. The meditator breathes normally, observing their breaths and simply becoming aware of them. No attempt is made to regulate, simply to observe and become aware of the body and its functioning. Meanwhile the meditator is trained to focus on eliminating thought. To an untrained meditator, thoughts will constantly break the calm of meditation, but with practise, true mental tranquility can be achieved. While this simplifies, the ultimate goal is to eliminate thought and clear the mind through a series of stages to reach nirvana.<br><br>The philosophy of Buddhist meditation is therefore one of liberation -- the teaching that man can escape from his self-imposed suffering through awareness of his surroundings and focusing his thoughts. Buddha sought to escape from old age, illness and death, and provided, through meditation, a prescription to his followers, an exhortation to follow him and hope to achieve his fate. Let's say the assailant is still in the "threatening mode". Do you wait for him to attack? Well, if you follow the philosophy of a defensive art, you must wait=85 <br /><br /> If you want to survive however, you must attack first. <br /><br /> Attack first?? That's barbaric! But are you really attacking first? The old question goes: "What does the journey of ten thousand miles begins with?" The common answer is "The first step". The more appropriate answer is "The thought of the first step". Thought proceeds action. Therefore the assailant was attacking with his "mind" and when you seemingly attack first, you are just beating him to the punch. Hence, you remain defensive. If the assailant hadn't confronted you in the first place there would be no confrontation. This is not a play on semantics to justify a moral dilemma. This is a fact. <br /><br /> Now, many "decent" people, confronted in such a manner will hope that they can maybe talk their way out of it. The ole' "I'm not looking for trouble" speech. This is a fine speech but it usually ends with the assailant sucker punching the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/victim" rel="tag">victim</a>. While the victim prays for a peaceful outcome, the assailant attacks. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/true+martial+arts" rel="tag">True martial arts</a> training should include the development of that intuitive perception through disciplines such as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/zen+meditation" rel="tag">Zen meditation</a>. The benefits of a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/mindfulness+meditation" rel="tag">mindfulness meditation</a> in relation to martial arts are immeasurable. To be honest, the victim in the above paragraph was more than likely overcome and frozen with fear to begin with. Regardless of any <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/martial+art+training" rel="tag">martial art training</a> the victim might have had, it's useless if he cannot move. If you are relatively calm during the confrontation due to a regular regiment of meditation, you will know when it's about to hit the fan. If your mind is running in fear and your heart is in your throat, chances are you will miss the signs. <br /><br /> The signs are there. In this situation, the walking itself is the focus of your meditation, rather than a candle or a mantra or your breathing. <br /><br /> Obviously, depending on where the walking is taking place, you may also need to be aware of other external influences as well, such as joggers and cyclists. <br /><br /> In a walking meditation, you should concentrate on the actual experience of walking. Notice the pressure on each foot as it touches the ground and the relief of that pressure as your foot rises again. Take in the experience of the muscles in your legs. Notice when they tense up and when they relax. Feel the changes in your toes as they meet the ground. Recognize what is happening to your ankles as you walk along. <br /><br /> As well as the stress relief that a walking meditation naturally brings, you should also experience a feeling of energy and invigoration.     <content:encoded><![CDATA[ Today, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/arthritis+patients" rel="tag">arthritis patients</a> are not only more receptive to complementary therapies- what has been called alternative therapy- but actually prefer it to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/conventional+medicines" rel="tag">conventional medicines</a>. <br /><br /> There are many reasons for this. These reasons include the adverse publicity surrounding the side effects of medicines such as Vioxx and Bextra, cost of pharmaceutical agents, insurance restrictions that make it difficult for patients to get the types of medicines they need, and the widely held concept that "natural" implies safe. <br /><br /> As has been demonstrated on multiple occasions, a natural remedy is not necessarily safe, nor is it necessarily even effective. <br /><br /> However, there are natural therapies for which there is little evidence supporting their usefulness in conditions like arthritis, but also a paucity of data showing they are harmful. <br /><br /> Such is the case with meditation. Meditation not only is safe but has had beneficial applications in other rheumatic conditions such as fibromyalgia. <br /><br /> A recent study has demonstrated that meditation may also be useful as an adjunctive treatment for <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/rheumatoid+arthritis" rel="tag">rheumatoid arthritis</a> (RA). <br /><br /> A <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/meditation+training" rel="tag">meditation training</a> program, called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/mbsr" rel="tag">MBSR</a>) was developed by Dr. Kabat-Zinn and other researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. MBSR teaches participants to focus the mind in a special way. This technique is supposed to increase clarity and calmness. <br /><br /> Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine assessed the effect of this <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/meditation+therapy" rel="tag">meditation therapy</a> on depressive symptoms, psychological distress, general well-being, and disease activity among <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ra+patients" rel="tag">RA patients</a>. The results of the study indicates that there are potential benefits of MBSR and that it can be used with a conventional course of physical and pharmacological therapy. <br /><br /> Sixty-three adult RA patients were selected to participate in this novel pilot study. The subjects averaged 54 years in age and predominately women. All patients remained under their rheumatologist's care and continued to take their routine medications throughout the study. <br /><br /> Thirty-one of the participants were randomized to receive MBSR therapy, starting with an 8-week training course followed by a 4-month maintenance program. The remaining 32 participants were assigned to a waiting list, agreeing to attend assessment sessions in exchange for free MBSR training at the study's conclusion. <br /><br /> Both groups of participants underwent psychological and rheumatological examinations at baseline, and again at 2 months and 6 months into the study. Researchers used the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised, a self-report questionnaire, to evaluate depressive symptoms and psychological distress. Overall well-being was measured by the Psychological Well-Being Scales, made up of questions designed to evaluate positive outlook and approach to coping with difficulties. RA clinical factors were assessed by the Disease Activity Score in 28 joints (DAS-28). <br /><br /> Researchers compared scores of psychological and physical disease symptoms among MBSR participants with those of the control group. Patients receiving MBSR found the program to be enjoyable and continued throughout the follow-up period. <br /><br /> After 2 months, both groups showed improvements in depressive, psychological, and emotional symptoms, with no significant difference between the MBSR group and the control group. By 6 months, however, gains in the control group had largely disappeared, while MBSR participants maintained or improved further in psychological outcomes. By the end of the study, the MBSR group achieved a significant 35 percent reduction in psychological distress. <br /><br /> The meditation program had no impact on RA disease activity, measured by the DAS-28, which is a composite score derived from swollen joints, tender joints, and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). <br /><br /> The studies flaws include its small sample size and the relative homogeneity of the control group. <br /><br /> The study showed that patients with RA may benefit from a meditation program such as MBSR class. MBSR is also safe and appealing to participants. The lead investigator, Dr. Elizabeth Pradhan, also states, "For doctors wishing to offer patients a complement to medical management, mindfulness meditation may offer hope for improving psychological distress and strengthening well-being in patients with RA." <br /><br /> (Pradhan EK, et al.     <content:encoded><![CDATA[ If you feel that you could manage your <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/depression" rel="tag">depression</a>, anxiety, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ocd" rel="tag">OCD</a> or stress if only you had the tools, then why not try a good self-help book. This is a cheaper option for those who cannot afford private therapy or give those waiting to see an NHS <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cognitive+behavioural+therapists" rel="tag">Cognitive Behavioural Therapists</a> (<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cbt" rel="tag">CBT</a>), the foundation to begin to manage their own mental-health. <br /><br /> There is wealth of self-help books out there and it can be overwhelming deciding which ones will be most useful. I regularly prescribe reading and practical exercises taken from self-help manuals as part of CBT and NLP treatment at my therapy practice in Hertfordshire. In this article, I list and describe some of the books that I have found most useful in relation to specific problems, in a bid to make choosing the book for you a bit easier! <br /><br /> For <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/obsessive+compulsive+disorder" rel="tag">Obsessive Compulsive Disorder</a> <br /><br /> My book of choice is "Overcoming Obsessive Compulsive Disorder =96 A self-help guide using Cognitive Behavioural Techniques" by David Veale and Rob Willson. This book is a clear and practical step-by-step guide to regaining control of your OCD and your life! The book contains a CBT approach that is specifically aimed at OCD. This is very important since some CBT approaches used to treat other problems such as anxiety and depression can be unhelpful when applied to OCD. This book is applicable to OCD in it's varying forms, e.g. for those who experience pure obsessions, for those who carry out internal mental rituals and for those who display compulsive behaviours. What I like about this book is that it is very frank and can help to show the person with OCD that they need not be ashamed of the content of their intrusive thoughts, images and urges. Some of the people I work with using CBT in Hertfordshire, have found that they need help in applying the book from a therapist. <br /><br /> For Depression <br /><br /> I recommend " The Cognitive Behavioural Workbook for Depression" by William Knaus. This book combines <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cognitive+behavioural+therapy" rel="tag">Cognitive Behavioural Therapy</a>, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/rational+emotive+behavioural+therapy" rel="tag">Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy</a> and common sense in an easy to follow format that includes practical exercises that can help you find your way out of a depressive state. By practising the techniques presented in the book, you can learn the skills to defeat depressive thinking. The book takes into account all factors related to being depressed that can make any action difficult and gives you tips on how to deal with procrastination, lack of energy and motivation. <br /><br /> I also recommend "The Mindful way Through Depression =96 Freeing Yourself From Chronic Unhappiness" by Williams, Teasdale, Segal and Zinn. Mindfulness is a technique that has its origins in Buddhism but that is used without any religious connotations within the field of cognitive therapy to help people learn to break the cycle of mental habits such as rumination and self-blame which perpetuate depression. Mindfulness involves disengaging from this type of mental activity. This book is written in the format of a program and includes a CD to follow of guided mindfulness meditation practices. <br /><br /> Mindfulness techniques are very useful for anxiety and OCD disorders also. <br /><br /> For Anxiety and Stress <br /><br /> A useful book that I use with people seeking CBT therapy, Hertfordshire is "The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook" by Edmund Bourne. This is a really comprehensive book that gives step-by-step guidance in overcoming anxiety and covers various factors including relaxation and meditation skills, exercise, coping with panic, dealing with negative self-talk and irrational beliefs, visualisation, self-esteem, medication, nutrition and more. <br /><br /> Finally a book that it more general but useful for anxiety, depression or stress is "Mind Over Mood - Change the Way you Feel by Changing The Way You Think" by Greenberger and Padesky This is a simple to follow book that really targets illogical and irrational thinking styles that drive depression and anxiety.
