But in truth, the revenue is not a totally effective tool to measure the effectiveness of the sales department. As with any <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/key+performance+indicators" rel="tag">key <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/performance+indicator" rel="tag">performance indicator</a>s</a>, there need to be a combination of measures which take into account by the scope and the quantity.<br /><br /><br /><br /> Calculating the revenue produced with the existing sales department is simple. It's a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/mathematical+calculation" rel="tag">mathematical calculation</a>. But, by <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/drilling+down" rel="tag">drilling down</a> in the key performance indicators for the sales department, you begin to get a better picture of the effectiveness of the sales department. For example, if the only performance indicator used for the sales department is the revenue for the company, the changes in revenue may have nothing to do with the sales department at all. It could be the effectiveness of the marketing campaign, or it could be the fact that the only other supplier of the product just went out of business. Perhaps the niche group that you're selling the product to just became much larger, such as a product which targets people over the age of retirement.<br /><br /><br /><br /> The point here is that measuring the revenue is not a complete nor necessarily <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/accurate+measurement" rel="tag">accurate measurement</a> of the performance of the sales department. <br /><br /> However, if you were to measure the number of new leads developed by the sales department during as specific time period, or the ratio of leads to sales, then you begin to get a more accurate picture of how well the sales department is doing. Once you have developed <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/measurement+tools" rel="tag">measurement tools</a> to help you define such statistics, then it is a fairly easy step to defining how effective the sales department is in doing the job of selling. <br /><br /><br /><br /> While isolating performance indicators so that you're measuring performance in the person or department where the responsibility lies is critical, the company can't lose sight of the fact that many elements may operate to make a successful overall business.<br /><br /><br /><br /> In setting key performance indicators to measure the company's progress toward reaching its goal, it is the process which is as important as the results. Using concepts such as the Balanced Scorecard process especially the modified versions which have become popular in the last decade is an excellent tool to first define and agree on goals and objective, then to define the measurement tools which will be used to determine if the objective is being met.<br /><br /><br /><br /> In the above example, the marketing department may be responsible for increasing the visibility of the product by a marketing campaign, but it is up to the sales department to take those leads and convert them to sales. It's the principle of the structure of marketing primarily the broad <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/definition+of+marketing" rel="tag">definition of marketing</a> and how it applies to small businesses as well as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fortune+500" rel="tag">Fortune 500</a> enterprises. <br /><br /> The idea for this issue was bouncing around in my mind for more than 10 years after a conversation I had with a software company where I was serving as the VP of Business Development. The conversation was around <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/business+planning" rel="tag">business planning</a> and marketing. <br /><br /> We were developing the business plan and the subject of the day was <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/sales+and+marketing" rel="tag">sales and marketing</a>, especially the hires and structure of the departments. The CEO that I was talking with was an ex big business (Fortune 500) executive with an old fashioned look on business planning and marketing. We got a bit stuck on what was marketing and how we would structure the departments. <br /><br /> The problem was simple. The CEO wanted to have a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/marketing+department" rel="tag">marketing department</a> and a sales department. He wanted them to be different cost centers, different departments running independently from each another. I wanted to have one department working together under one cost center. I thought the concept was simple and the decision very easy. I was wrong, very wrong. <br /><br /> What I considered a very easy decision stretched into an argument. I really did not understand what the problem was. After all, isn't sales a part of marketing? Isn't marketing a universal term that explains how to "Market" products and services? How to place products and services out in the world? Isn't sales just one part of that whole process? Well, as it turns out not many people know this and not many people see it this way. <br /><br /> For some reason, businesses, tradition, bosses, schools, have separated sales from marketing although in definition sales is just one part of marketing, and if the whole <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/marketing+strategy" rel="tag">marketing strategy</a> is done correctly the sales are the easy part. <br /><br /> I can see the dilemma, after all, how do you teach sales at school to university students? I remember when I was in school sales was a bad word. Nobody said "I'm majoring in sales" or "I want to be a salesperson when I graduate". This is without realizing that everything in the real word is about sales, from your resume to your interviews, raises, promotions, owning your business, asking for investments or loans, everything. <br /><br /> Is there a practical business solution? Yes, education. Understanding marketing and what it is and how to use it is the name of the game. And creating a solid marketing plan and a department capable of unifying sales and marketing is the goal. This will make sales a part of marketing and salespeople will love you for it. After all you will make their life easy by applying killer marketing techniques to help them close more sales and be more profitable. To do this you have to become a marketing expert, everything you do is marketing, the way you deal with employees, customers, investors, the bank, suppliers, everything. <br /><br /> What is your homework? In the past few years, shopping at a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/department+store" rel="tag">department store</a> has become my best friend for this very reason. <br /><br /> I love going to a department store especially when I am in a hurry because I can pick up almost anything I need in one stop. Whether I am looking for clothing, shoes, jewlery, makeup, or something for my home, the department store usually has just what I need. It is much easier for me to shop in one place that I know provides a variety of great products. There is nothing better than entering a department store and then leaving it an hour later with my entire list accomplished. <br /><br /> I also enjoy shopping at <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/department+stores" rel="tag">department stores</a> because usually they are very reasonable in price. I do not have the money to spend on unique stores and specialized boutiques all of the time, so a department store is often a great alternative. I can usually find great name brand items at a fraction of the regular cost. Keep track of sale flyers that come in the newspaper or sign up to receive weekly <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/store+coupons" rel="tag">store coupons</a> through your <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/email+account" rel="tag">email account</a>. There are ways to make shopping more reasonable, especially at department stores. <br /><br /> Another great thing about a department store is that I can usually find items for everyone in my family, regardless of their ages or preferences. It is an amazing thing to be able to enter one store and come out with something for my grandmother, my father, my husband and my three year old daughter. I love it. I just move from department to department until I have accomplished everything I need. I cannot begin to think of all the time I save by just going to a department store or two rather than to a speciality shop for all the ages of people I need to shop for. <br /><br /> One of my favorite times of the year to utilize a department store is the holidays. Shopping during the holidays is magical no matter what, but there is no place quite as magical as a well-decorated department store. Department stores are often filled with great deals and specials based on the amount of money you spend there. <br /><br /> I encourage everyone to explore the possibilities that shopping at a department store offers. The <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/marketing+department" rel="tag">marketing department</a> people were serious and analytical, always busy with statistics and campaigns and meetings. The sales people were breathless, always on the go, always on the phone or going to meet customers, always on the cusp of some enormous deal, some magic sale that would catapult the company's turnover way over the annual target. As a junior it seemed to me that the marketing people and the sales people were from two different planets. I now know that they were simply two parts of the same continuum. <br /><br /> Marketing can be described as the set of activities that are undertaken in order to generate leads, while selling is the act of turning a prospect a hot lead into a buyer and later a repeat customer. The marketing and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/sales+functions" rel="tag">sales functions</a> of any organization are glued together by leads. If there are no leads, the two will fall foul of one another. I saw this in that business I was describing earlier. But leads work both ways. The marketing department has to deliver them and the sales department must act upon them to maximum advantage. But leads must first be generated and that is why marketing tends to overwhelm the sales function when the two are discussed. <br /><br /> The various forms that marketing takes are well known because they are so visible. They range from cold canvassing to brand or corporate advertising, through to the more targeted <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/types+of+marketing" rel="tag">types of marketing</a> such as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/direct+response+advertising" rel="tag">direct response advertising</a> and referrals, where the particular benefits of the product is explained to the customer. If this is done properly, then qualified prospects will actually approach the sales people for assistance. Sales people love those leads. It is in fact when the sales people take over the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/communication+function" rel="tag">communication function</a> that the lead ceases to be a lead and becomes a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/prospective+customer" rel="tag">prospective customer</a>, then a customer and finally a repeat customer. <br /><br /> Actually I have painted a somewhat idealistic picture of the lead relationship between the marketing function and the sales function. It is just not that simple because not all leads are equal. An extremely tiny percentage leads are customers who are ready to buy. Most of them are merely interested in possibly buying at a future date and some are just mildly interested, just browsing. That's why it is important to have some sort of lead management system so that potential customers can be turned into buyers and buyers can become repeat customers. <br /><br /> All follow up communication should be friendly and informative, definitely not hard sell. The company representative should be regarded as a helpful expert rather than a rabid sales person. Fortunately many of the follow up functions can be automated to take the form of email, direct mail, voice broadcast and fax broadcast. Obviously the lead would be encouraged each time to call directly if they have questions or a ready to buy.
