Vacation Rentals: A Budget-friendly Solution

Vacation rentals, London tourists should know, are one of the easiest ways to stay in the city without breaking the bank. If you cringe at the hotel prices of cities such as Seoul or Moscow, for example, then you would be alarmed at how much everything costs in London.

This is how vacation rentals London-style works: a landlord leases to you an apartment, fully furnished and ready for occupation. Use of apartments like these are more long-term than hotel stays, so vacation rentals, London-style, may be availed of for three days or longer. In exchange, you pay a sum that covers not your daily stay, but the entire duration of your visit.

Vacation Rentals: Options

A gaggle of lodging options are available for tourists who are considering the vacation rentals London has to offer. There are one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments. However, if you want to experience first-hand the colorful traditions and history of London, then why not explore other options?

The vacation rentals London proffers are not limited to modern apartments. Other excellent options include properties that belong to the National Trust and Landmark Trust. These two are organizations that safeguard historic buildings and estates sprawled throughout Britain. They rent these out to vacationers. So, if you are adventurous enough to prefer the historic to the convenient, then you should leap at this opportunity to relieve a piece of history. You could stay in a cozy farm cottage or inside a 500-year-old castle.

Vacation Rentals: At the Heart of the Bustle

The good thing about the vacation rentals London districts provide is that these are very close to the most visited tourist attractions, most of which are in Central London. These include Westminster Abbey and a dozen of theaters, museums, and old structures. These lodgings are found close to the shopping districts, too. Price is definitely one of the less savory things about London, but many tourists go shopping, nonetheless, because the products sold in London are of the highest quality. The West End of London, particularly Trafalgar Square, is a world-renowned shopping area.

In planning your London vacation, remember to make not just flight and lodging arrangements, but also transportation provisions as well. Many websites, such as http:www.Holiday4You.com offer free information about London's vacation rentals and public transport, be this road, rail, air, or water. Oh, and while in London, you must never forget to take a cab. London cabbies are as much a distinctive part of the city as its <bio>Looking for vacation rentals in London ( http://www.holiday4you.com/arizona.htm )?
Living in London is a dream comes true for many. For these people, it is a city where everything is possible. For many it is the beginning of a dream. London has seldom disappointed one who has lived there. It has a rich treasure of history, culture, education, natural beauty, modern amenities and employment opportunities. It imparts a sense of pride into its citizens. The reasons are many, and significant ones too.

London is the cradle of the largest urban economy of Europe. It rubs shoulders with Tokyo and New York in being a significant powerhouse of the world. The multicultural population of London is one of its greatest advantages, and thus attracts all leading global businesses. The predominant use of English law and language also gives it an edge over competing economic powers.

Employment in London

The British economy is presently in a vibrant state as it boasts of an annual growth rate of 2%. That London contributes significantly to this success story goes without saying. The employed population of the city is almost 3.5 million. Moreover, the wages this workforce enjoys are almost 20% more than what is enjoyed by the rest of the country. Thus, more and more people are attracted to London and they seldom have complaints about their pay packets. Manual labour has an average salary of £20,000, while urban white-collar jobs offer attractive six-figure salaries. The greatest drawbacks of the people staying and earning in London are the exorbitant costs of living and housing. Rental costs and housing expenses in London are almost double of what they are anywhere else in the country. But the problem is tackled by many by putting up at the fringes of the capital and traveling everyday.

Major industries in London

Finance happens to be the lifeline of London's industries. It is the largest of all the industries London has. The city boasts of being the base of more than fifty of the top hundred companies of UK, and more than hundred of the top five hundred companies of Europe. The newly developed Canary Wharf houses the global headquarters of esteemed companies like Barclays, HSBC and Reuters and hence functions as the secondary financial center.

Apart from finance, an industry which is growing big and fast in London, is the creative sector. Compared to other countries, the growth of the creative industry has been significant. It employs more than 4,000,000 workers and has an annual turnover of more than £14 billion.

Educational opportunities in London

London provides excellent educational opportunities to deserving candidates. Esteemed universities like the University of London, London Metropolitan University, University of Westminster, Royal College of Art and prestigious colleges like King's College London, Imperial College London and London School of Economics and Political Science attract students from all over the world. London residents can get the best of education, as a degree from any of these institutions is considered priceless.

Leisure spots in London

London has many beautiful places that can delight a tourist. There are lots of Hotels and places to stay in London too. But the best thing about London is that people living there for decades also never stop being tourists there because of the attractive and interesting spots that never seem to get old. The Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, the museums, the palaces, the churches and the parks never cease to attract the veteran visitors.<bio>Openroads is a great source for tourists or visitors looking for Hotels in London, offering a fine selection of places to stay in London for budgets of all types.</bio>

When people think of London they think of the Royal family, the Parliamentary government, and years old tradition. If you plan on visiting London, be sure to stop by these must-see attractions for their history, their beauty, and their regal stature.

The Tower of London is almost a thousand years old and is home to the crown jewels. Make sure to plan ahead and get tickets to the Ceremony of the Keys, a 700 year long tradition of locking up the Tower at night. Tickets are free but you'll need to get them 6-8 weeks in advance. Because the Tower of London is a hot tourist spot, lines are hours long. To avoid the long lines, buy tickets at any Tower Hill tube station. With your tickets in hand you can bypass the line and walk right in.

Buckingham Palace is probably London's most famous building, and still a working Palace and home to the Queen. If you go in the summer months when the Queen is in Scotland you can get a tour of the staterooms. Buckingham Palace is also where the famous "Changing of the Guards" takes place. You can see this every day at 11:30am.

The Palace of Westminster and what is now the Houses of Parliament features the famous clock tower Big Ben, which chimes every 15 minutes. If you think of any postcard from London, you'll recognize the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben. It contains the House of Commons and the House of Lords. While there you can see the Parliament in action by making an appointment ahead of time. The building itself is a masterpiece in its own right. Big Ben and the House of Parliament is one of the top attractions in London.

Westminster Abbey is a cathedral used by the Royals for funerals, coronations, and weddings. It is considered to be the nation's cathedral. Its architecture is breathtaking and its history is astounding. Poet's Corner pays tribute to Shakespeare, Chaucer, Dickens, T.S. Eliot, and several others, some of which are buried there. Also here, is the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Famous Royals like Queen Elizabeth I is entombed here as well as Edward the Confessor.

Once atop the Tower Bridge, the views are outstanding. This is the most famous bridge that spans the Thames River. When you buy a ticket you can go into the engine room that is responsible for lifting the bridge. You can also see video and interactive displays inside the bridge. This is a must-see for London tourists.

If you are visiting London soon, please check into the Westbury Mayfair Hotel. They have exclusive rooms and an ideal location next to the finest stores in London. While it may be a bit pricey, your experience will be unmatched.

A trip to London just wouldn't be complete with visiting the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower Bridge, and Westminster Abbey. Make sure you add these destinations to your itinerary. You won't be disappointed! <bio>http://www.ratestogo.com </bio>

London is the major metropolitan area and the capital of England and the United Kingdom. Since its inception, London has been an element of many significant actions and phenomena down through history. The city's heart is the very old City of London that retains its medieval boundaries to some degree; but since the 19th century the given name "London" has also been used to refer to the entire area, which has grown up around it. Today the immensity of this metropolis forms the London region of England.

After knowing the brief history of this city, when a person goes there, they find out that London is the world's most important business, economic, and one of the world's primary cultural centers and it has power over politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion and the Arts.

All of the above add to its position as a leading global city. There are four world heritage sites in London that are visited by every tourist:

1. The Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret's Church
2. The Tower of London
3. The historic settlement of Greenwich
4. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

London's population is influenced by a wide variety of peoples, cultures, and religions, and the most interesting one discovers is that over 300 languages are spoken within the city. The Consensus of 2006 states that it has population of 7,512,400 within the borders of London, and it is the most crowded metropolis in the European Union. London is the existing Olympic City and will hold the 2012 Olympics. You can find more information regarding this, and a lot more, on the website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London

On visiting London one should never miss the biggest parkland areas in the middle of London, which are the Royal Parks consisting of Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens located at the west side of central London, and Regent's Park on the northern side. The last park houses London Zoo - the world's ancient scientific zoo. This old zoo is situated near the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. Near to central London are the minor Royal Parks of Green Park and St. James's Park. Hyde Park especially is well-known for sporting activities, and from time to time holds concerts outside.

There several large park areas those are located outside the central city:

1. Remaining Royal Parks of Greenwich Park in the south-east
2. Bushy Park
3. Richmond Park in the south-west
4. Victoria Park
5. East London, east
6. Primrose Hill to the north of Regent's Park (that is an admired spot to view the city horizon).

There are some open places which are more casual and semi-natural present, like the 791-acre Hampstead Heath of North London. Places that are considered to be the most attractive sites for people are Kenwood House, the old home and a well-liked spot in the warmer months where traditional concerts are hosted next to the lake, making the time the most memorable along with the scenery and fireworks.

The amusement district has its focal point around Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, where premieres of world film are hosted, as well as enormous electronic advertisements. London Hotels are the most popular choice amongst tourists; also you can find many cinemas, clubs and restaurants, including an area housing specialty shops. Shoreditch and Hoxton in the East End have an excess of bars and galleries. The active shopping precinct is Oxford Street. This street is almost one mile (2 km) long. This is Europe's busiest shopping street where you will love to go, shop around and have lots of fun.<bio>Openroads is a great source for tourists or visitors looking for London Hotels, offering a fine selection of places to stay in London for budgets of all types. They also have a range of discounts and offers for other attractive travel destinations around the world.</bio>

Once you have decided to go on a vacation of a lifetime you have decided to travel to London. Not to visit the queen, but see the sights, tour the place and experience the grand old culture of a royal kingdom.

Whatever your reason is, you will need some help in planning your trip to London. Finding cheap airline tickets to London could help you a lot. It could save you a lot of cash which you would need to spend for a tour and for accommodations.

With cheap airline tickets to London, you need not spend more than what you need to get there. After all, the purpose of your trip is to enjoy what London has to offer by way of sights, sounds, scents and shopping that you can savor.

You do not go to London to enjoy the plane cabin and then have a regrettable stay in in the suburbs. Thus you need to prepare yourself to get cheap airline tickets to London.

First, you need to keep in mind that ticket prices change constantly. They could be cheap at this certain hour and shoot up the next day and your dream of getting cheap airline tickets to London one day may go down the drain on the next day. So even if you have already decided on the day of your leaving, be prepared to make some adjustments and keep your eyes and ears open for any news about changes in ticket prices or any little tidbit about the airline company of choice. A bit of change in management or a fluke in the market could head you for an ultra cheap airline tickets to London.

But then again, it could mean also mean the reverse and you could end up with a ridiculously pricey airline tickets to London. Nobody would want that so be flexible for a bit of adjustment that could be worth those cheap airline tickets to London.

Secondly, you need to book early. Even though you may be up to date on information regarding cheap airline tickets to London, you may not be able to get your hands on them until it is too late. Although these cheap airline tickets exist, you will only be assured when they are actually in your hands and paid for! Until they are actually paid for, they still exist in somebody else's pocket which could really turn out bad for you. At least when you book early, you will always have the option to change your tickets when the offer for cheap airline tickets to London comes along. The early bird usually gets the worm anyway.

Thirdly, remember to buy cheap airline tickets to London from suppliers and direct agents who have direct access to them. Do not buy your cheap airline tickets to London from middle men because chances are, they are really not that cheap. Intermediaries, after all, get their profit by adding a percentage to the tag price of your cheap airline tickets to London. So you do not really end up paying the actual price of those cheap airline tickets to London.

Finally, if you are searching for online websites who are offering cheap airline tickets to London, be passionate about it. It does not mean that you need to crash your computer hardware in search for those cheap airline tickets to London but you do need to hunt for online sellers who can really sell those cheap airline tickets to London. Maybe you can also tell your friends about your success in finding a cheap airline ticket to London and save them the hassle of hunting for one. <bio>If you liked this article, you might also like my other must-read guide to getting cheap airline tickets. click here: http://Airline-Ticket-Guide.useful-tips.com/ Article Written By: Jed Baguio </bio>

If you have been planning your vacation for quite a while, it's most likely that you would want to get the best out of it. There are endless stories about vacation disasters and you wouldn't want to have one of your own. If it's the United Kingdom you've been salivating for, here are a few places, events, and tips to make the most of your dream vacation.

Preparing for the trip

While some people have an affinity towards spontaneous travel, some of us would like a well-planned vacation. This is especially true if you have been working so much and you've only had a shot at a vacation for the first time in years. If this is the case, then you'd probably want to be prepared and make the most out of it.

Fix your schedule- knowing how long your vacation is crucial - the date when it starts and ends. This is the factor that you'd be able to base your whole itinerary on. You'd be able to check the dates of festivals and events that fall within the span of your vacation. Also take into account the travel time, opening and closing of establishments (museums, clubs, restaurants etc.). Having an itinerary doesn't mean that you have to follow it to the dot. It best serves as a guideline rather than a book of law. This way, you have a good idea how to move about.

Read up- Reading up on a place's history helps you better appreciate it once you are there. Stonehenge may seem like a pile of rocks for some, but what they may not know is that it is a mystery that is yet to be solved. Research also allows you to know about certain etiquette that you'd have to exercise when you're in a particular country. Some gestures that are fine where you stay could be offensive in another. After all, you wouldn't want to pick a fight in a foreign land.

London anyone?

U.K. holidays just aren't complete without visiting the city of London. With all of its double-deck buses, British Bobbies, and red telephone booths, London is quite the experience especially if you haven't been there yet. During the day, you may visit its historical landmarks such as the Tower of London, British Parliament, Big Ben, and the London Eye. If you'd like a brief history of London and have a bit of a scare at the same time, visiting the London Dungeon would be an ideal activity. The fun doesn't stop when the Sun goes down; there are a lot of pubs and clubs that you may choose to go to. You'll see a collection of fun locals and tourists out to have a pleasant evening.

There are so many other places that you can visit during your U.K. holidays. You could practically take out a map of the United Kingdom, randomly point at any location, and still find a fun filled activity in that area. Places such as Cardiff, Edinburgh, Northern Ireland, and the city of Bath are all vacation-worthy spots that would give you your money's worth.<bio>This article was brought to you by Springfields Army Stores, a leading supplier of camping equipment in the UK</bio>

London is one of the cultural capitals of Europe and has loads of sightseeing and activities for tourists of all ages. There are an innumerable amount of things to see and do in London but here are some "must see" sights that shouldn't be left out of your travel itinerary.

The British Museum is vast and is so big that seeing everything in one day is near impossible. The Greek and Egyptian exhibits are especially impressive and are considered by some to be the best permanent museum installations of their kind.

The British Airways London Eye can be seen from all over central London; it is the tallest observation wheel in the world. Views from this wheel are impressive to say the least and it will give you a better orientation for your remaining sightseeing.

St. Paul's Cathedral is over 300 years old and remains a spiritual landmark for Great Brittan. It has hosted weddings and funerals for Great Brittan's royalty and leaders. The architecture is impressive and a beautiful piece of history.

The National Gallery located at Trafalgar Square is another must see that is impossible to cover in just one visit. The art contained at the National Gallery ranges from Leonardo da Vinci to Monet and is sure to impress even those who are not art savvy.

The London Zoo at Regents Park is home to an impressive amount of animals and is a big draw for families with children. There are daily animal shows and it is so large that two days should be given to see the entire park.

Another gallery that is sure to interest all ages is the Tate Modern Museum. The art installations use different kinds of mediums and range from Andy Warhol to Matisse. The building itself is a work of art and is a "must see" on your trip to London.

The Tower of London is another sight not to be missed. It was built of bricks imported from France and is most popular for its many executions. It was even dubbed the "bloody tower" after it was speculated that Richard III murdered his nephews there.

Another museum to take in is the Natural History Museum which contains one of the world's largest collections of dinosaur fossils. This is another big hit with the children but is sure to impress adults as well.

If you're in the mood for a fun and frightful experience do not miss The Madame Tussaud's Experience. It's a wax museum full of ghoulish figures; some of them are electronically animated which adds to the excitement.

Finally a trip to London would not be the same without a visit to Westminster Abbey which has become one of London's most stunning churches. It is not only an architectural masterpiece but it is also the burial place for many famous figures.

London is a fun and exciting city for all ages. Ensure you include as many "must see" sights as possible to get the full London experience and the most out of your vacation. <bio>Focusing on latest developments in Benidorm, Ray Walberg writes primarily for http://www.alicante-spain.com .
Few vacations can rival staying in elegant London hotels and exploring the history of the British Empire. Think of yourself, after listening to a classical music concert in Royal Albert Hall, crossing the street to the north to view a marvelous monument to the Prince Consort, Prince Albert. With the last notes of Vivaldi's Four Seasons still playing in your mind, you gaze up at the centerpiece of the Albert Memorial, a seated figure of Prince Albert covered in gold leaf. Then, you take your time, strolling around to view the impressive sculptural Frieze of Parnassus, which depicts 169 composers, poets, architects, painters, and yes, sculptors. You return to your hotel, stopping first for a cup of tea in the lobby, and then go on up to your elegantly appointed room for the night.

Strolling through Hyde Park the next morning, you gaze up at Wellington Arch, also known as Constitution Arch. Planned in 1825 by George IV to commemorate Britain's victories in the Napoleonic Wars, you are told by a local Londoner that it was conceived as a grand entrance into central London from the west. Also within the park, south of Serpentine Lake, is the Diana, Princess of Wales memorial, an oval stone ring fountain opened in 2004. Whether your taste for history is for queens and kings of another age or more modern royalty, London wraps you in its charms like no other city in the world.

Truly a city of the visual arts, London offers over 240 museums, from the traditional to the modern. The National Gallery on the north side of Trafalgar Square, houses 2,300 Western European paintings from the years 1250 to 1900. The Tate Modern is Britain's national museum of international modern art, housed in the former Bankside Power Station. Since the museum's opening in May 2000, the Tate has become a popular destination for Londoners and tourists alike.

Affording a London vacation was once limited to those of wealth and privilege, but this is no longer the case. Using the internet site http://londonhotels4u.com, you will discover you can experience London elegance at a very affordable cost.

By liaising with London hotels directly, this site offers stays at fine hotels without the high costs you might expect in a world-class city. Additionally, the hotels are located near the London Underground, colloquially known as the Tube. This subway system, which is itself both a delight and an experience you will remember for a lifetime, covers much of Greater London and even some neighboring areas. Choosing hotels that are within easy access to the Tube offers a way to explore and experience London that is both very affordable and highly entertaining--not to mention extremely efficient.

Each day in London brings memories to last a lifetime. Experiencing luxury in London hotels, sampling a great city's culture and its history---never has it been more affordable or more elegant. <bio>By a freelance writer for http://www.londonhotels4u.com/ .
London is one of the biggest and most diverse cities in the World. It has an excellent transport system, but if your time is limited, what sights should you make it your priority to see?

The following list is drawn from memory, on the basis that if I can recall them with fondness, they're most likely worth a visit:

1. Houses Of Parliament.

There are very fine buildings. Admittance is free, but you may have to queue. Due to security searches, you may not be able to get in at all, as they have to let the Members Of Parliaments (MPs) and their guests in first. The searches can take time.

However, it's worth the wait. The interiors are very grand indeed, and the staff are friendly.

2. Statue Of Eros, Piccadilly Circus.

This is the geographical heart of London. The statue itself is handsome, but it's more just to say you've been there. The only other interesting feature is the neon advertising hoarding adjacent. This, and Leicester Square, are not much frequented by native Londoners; you will only meet more tourists in these places.

3. London Eye (or The Millenium Wheel).

It offers excellent views of central London, and is quite romantic on a clear, moonlit night. This needs to be booked in advance, otherwise you may not be able to get on. You can book this novelty online.

4. Tower Bridge.

This is best traversed by night, and in a London black cab. A fine example of Victorian workmanship.

5. Tower Of London.

Here are kept the Crown Jewels. This are impressive, but most impressive for me was a brief film clip shown there of the coronation of the current Queen Elizabeth. A very moving piece of ecclesiastical theatre.

Other than that, the ancient weaponry displayed has a kind of thuggish dullness about it. Also interesting are the ravens, who have their wings clipped to stop them flying off. You may see them hopping about outside.

6. A Red Double Decker Bus.

You can pay a small fee, and travel on one of these for a few stops. A pleasant, interesting and efficient means of transport.

7. The Tube.

This is the underground train system. In itself it's not remarkable, but it enables the ignorant tourist to pop up like a gopher at their destination, instead of negotiating the buses and the streets.

8. A Black Cab.

One could see the sites mentioned above in a black cab, at night. This is a high-quality, licenced taxi service, and a nice, if expensive way to get around.

9. The Side Streets.

Get off the main streets like Oxford Street and Charing Cross Road, and travel in parallel on the side streets. You'll see more of the real London, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how much less crowded it is.

10. Sites worth seeing outside Central London: Portobello Road, Camden Market, Kew Gardens.

Likely to disappoint: Buckingham Palace, Oxford Street, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square. I'm afraid these are not as interesting as their propaganda. One would go to see them just to boast you'd been.

You should get: 'The A-Z of London'. It is sold at any newsagent. This is a handy book of maps, with a good index. Even native Londoners find it essential in finding unfamiliar places. Don't leave your hotel without it; you might think you know the way, but you'll likely get lost, and even the locals may not know where you need to go! <bio>Niccolo Svengali is the webmaster of travel ( http://travel.arooty.com ), hotel ( http://hotels.arooty.com ) and education ( http://education.arooty.com ) web sites in Palermo, Sicily. </bio>

After a while of grinding long hours of grueling work, you're finally a few days away from a well- deserved vacation. The question that now lurks in you're mind is where to spend it. It's possible that you've had your eyes set on the U.K. for quite a while but not really sure where to start. Whether you decide to start there or not, England is definitely a place you shouldn't miss when you are planning to have a vacation in the United Kingdom.

We're going to London!

No trip to England can be complete without a visit to its capital, London. There are countless things to see and mostly are marvels of architecture. One of the landmarks that people often associate with London is the Clock Tower. This is the tower that a lot of people think is the Big Ben. The truth is that Big Ben is actually the bell inside of the Clock Tower. Other man made marvels located here are structures such as The London Eye, British Parliament, The Tower of London, and St. Paul's Cathedral.

Aside from the architecture, London is also rich in culture. One of the attractions tourist flock to see is the Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace. The guards that are on duty are relieved of their post by another batch of sentries, done by a well-choreographed ceremony. This usually starts at around 11am, so if you are used to waking up after lunch, then maybe you'd like to adjust that body clock a little bit.

Stonehenge

Without any idea of it whatsoever, Stonehenge may seem like a boring pile of rubble. The thing is that tribesmen have laid out these stones in ancient times, and it has puzzled archeologists as to how they were able to transport the stones there with the technology of their time (or lack thereof). There have been a lot of theories as to what they used these stones for. Some say that it could have been a ceremonial temple used by druids; some say that it was used as an ancient clock because of its relation with the position of the Sun and the Moon. Another theory is that the whole area of its location (the County of Wilshire) is actually a burial ground and Stonehenge is a temple of their memorial. Regardless of what its purpose is, it's captivated the minds of scientists and tourists alike.

The Roman Baths

Even people in ancient Rome appreciated the spa experience. The Roman baths, which is located in the city of Bath, was a place of public bathing. It is still well preserved and there are many stories and exciting facts behind it. Gladiators would go to the baths after a fight (an additional initiative to win aside from not dying), and would relax and replenish. They would use certain stones to scrape of grime and dead skin from their bodies that was actually collected and put in containers. The reason for this? Women would actually rub it all over their faces, believing that the glory, bravery, and other qualities surviving gladiators would rub off on them. It may seem unhygienic but it was the norm of that period.<bio>This article was brought to you by Springfields Army Stores, a leading supplier of camping equipment in the UK</bio>

London is one of the world's most visited cities. With its combination of historic buildings, renowned museums and galleries and the best in dining, clubbing, entertainment and now a new range of boutique hotels, you won't run out of things to do.

Where is it?

London is the capital of the UK, set on the river Thames. Served by several airports, including London Heathrow, London Gatwick and London Stanstead, and with direct train links to the continent via the Channel Tunnel, and to the rest of the UK via domestic operators, the city is easy to get to.

Where can I stay?

It's no surprise that London is full of hotels of various sizes and standards. Famous and expensive hotels sit alongside smaller guesthouses, but it is the boutique hotel that's currently proving a popular choice with visitors. Small and stylish, with impeccable service and a real atmosphere rather than one manufactured by the marketing department of a large hotel chain, staying in one of these hotels can only make your trip to London more enjoyable.

What can I see?

There's so much going on in London that even the residents don't see it all. Plan your stay so that you enjoy a little bit of history at the Tower of London or St. Paul's Cathedral for example; some of the treasures and paintings in the museums and galleries; a show in the West End and some great drinking and dining. If you're staying in a good hotel, you can rely on the concierge or reception staff to help you buy tickets or plan your itinerary. Don't forget your camera, and make a long list of the things you want to do the next time you visit.

How do I get around?

Like all major cities, London has a modern public transport system. A comprehensive underground network takes you to all parts of the city, with prices working on a "zone" basis, which makes it easy to calculate which tickets to buy and how much they will cost. If you're planning to use the underground a lot during your trip, ask for details of saver tickets. London's famous red buses are easy to use and reasonably cheap at just £1 for central London journeys. Alternatively, you could take a traditional "black cab". These hackney cabs can be hailed from anywhere and the drivers have to pass a stringent test so that they can take you anywhere you need to go. Adept at avoiding traffic jams, happy to hold a conversation and with honest fare meters, a journey with a hackney cab driver is a real London experience. You can hire a car, but if you're staying within the city, it's far easier to use public transport. <bio>Chic Retreats is a worldwide collection of cool, smart hotels with less than 30 rooms and an eye for design and style.
