This is a question asked by many young people who one day aspire to be a pilot, or more specifically a law enforcement pilot. The standard answer you will hear, is that most police agencies "hire their pilots from within." This is true for the most part but let's take a closer look at this possible career choice. Another related question I see often is how much do law enforcement pilots make?

Indeed there are some agencies who hire civilian pilots. We will take a closer look at this in a future article.

First let's look at where most of the law enforcment pilots are found in the United States. By far the vast majority are found in state and local law enforcement agencies. In other words your local police and sheriff's department, or your state highway patrol. Yes there are a number of federal agencies who employee pilots, but the vast majority are local law enforcement agencies.

Take LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) for example. They operate approximately 18 aircraft, most of which are helicopters, and have somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 people assigned to their aviation unit. They are one of the largest law enforcement aviation units in the country, if not the largest.

I probably don't have to tell you that the helicopter dominates the law enforcement aircraft inventory, though many agencies will operate one or two fixed wing aircraft for prisoner transports and surveillance operations. So the majority of law enforcement pilots are helicopter pilots.

The vast majority of agencies do in fact take their sworn officers and deputies, and either train them in house, or send them to flight school to obtain their helicopter pilot license. Why do they do it this way instead of just hiring people who are already pilots? Well I can't answer for every agency, but suffice it to say that the majority do, do it this way and they have for many years.

So how long would you have to spend on the ground as a patrol officer before being able to transfer into a law enforcement air unit? This varies significantly from agency to agency. There is usually a minimum amount of time, such as 2 or 4 years, and then there is the actual time and experience you will need in order to be competetive for such a position. I know of some law enforcement officers who were able to transfer into their air units with as little as 5 or 6 years on the department.

About that pay. Most law enforcement pilots do receive a premium pay for being a pilot in the air unit. However, all you really need to do is look at the salary of a law enforcement officer on a large department with about 10 years on. This will give you a good idea of what a law enforcement pilot makes. Depending on the part of the country I would estimate most law enforcement pilots are making $60,000 to $70,000 at a minimum. Some make much more. There are two types of certificate one can get. One is an entry level certificate. This certificate allows you to get entry level positions in your profession. The other certificate is a professional certificate. This certificate is for those already in a profession that want to specialize in certain area of the profession. This is more like continuing education for the professional. The easiest way to explain this is through the examples presented below.

One example is someone who gets an entry level certificate in paralegal studies. This certificate allows you to get entry level job as a legal assistant in law firms or law department of organizations.



On the other hand, a professional in the criminal justice field can get a certificate in paralegal studies. This certificate is a form of professional studies that helps keep them current in the profession. It also helps him or her get more specialized training as paralegal. The hope is that such specialization will help in career advancement.

Another example is someone who gets an entry level certificate in law enforcement. This certificate will enable the person get entry level position in police departments or other law enforcement organizations.

On the other hand, a law enforcement professional can get a certificate to help him or her specialize in an area of law enforcement. It could a certificate that helps him or her perform better as an investigator. This type of law enforcement certificate will strictly focus on investigative skills. The person doing this is again hoping this certificate will help their career advancement.

A final example is an entry level certificate in homeland security. This person will acquire the skills to handle basic homeland security duties. The person will be employed by local, state, or federal homeland security organizations.

On the other hand, a homeland security specialist can get certificate in homeland security that helps him or her perform their job better. This type of certificate could be in the area of counter terrorism. This will keep them in the cutting edge of counter terrorism and help him or her stay ahead of terrorists. Again, the idea here is to keep them relevant in the profession, with the hope that this relevancy will help their career advancement.

Any way you look at it, a certificate in criminal justice can only help the individual that acquires it. An entry level one helps one get a job and a foot in the door of the profession. This foot in the door leads to paychecks. A professional certificate helps one specialize. This specialization leads to career advancement and more money.

I have only given a few examples of certificates in criminal justice. There are a lot more. Covering all of them is beyond what I can do in this short article. With such staggering figures, what have many cities opted to do? They set up photo enforcement.

How Photo Enforcement Works Photo enforcement, while relatively new in the United States, has been in use in Europe and Australia for two decades. This is how it works. Cameras, positioned on a pole about 12 feet high and roughly 80 feet behind the intersection, are connected to wire sensors. These sensors are placed into cuts in the roadway. It is through these wires that electricity travels, creating an electromagnetic field as it does so. Vehicles running over the wire create an interference in the electromagnetic field, thereby triggering the camera.

How do cameras determine which cars and drivers to take pictures of? Another network of wires is set up a few feet away from cameras. These determine the speed of the vehicle crossing the red light. Because these cameras have viewfinders that cover entire intersections, two photos are taken once the sensors are triggered. The first photo shows the vehicle before it enters the intersection. The second shows the vehicle in the intersection. In both photographs, the red light is visible.

Image Capture: During and After Automated speed enforcement operate on pre-determined speed thresholds, 11 miles per hour over the posted speed limit, for example. Thus, it only captures images of vehicles moving at or exceeding the established speed threshold. When violations occur, the system captures not only the images of the vehicle and the driver, but also the vehicle's speed data. These are then sent to authorized personnel who review the vehicle's registration information. The resulting citations are sent to the vehicle's registered owner through the mail.

Photo Enforcement: Advantages Perhaps the biggest advantage of photo enforcement is that it is the solution to limited enforcement resources. After all, there are too few traffic cops and simply too many reckless drivers. Additionally, it provides quick physical documentation of the offense and the offender, thereby minimizing red light running and its resulting accidents. Photo enforcement is said to have a behavior modification effect on drivers. Once drivers see red light cameras, they slow down and drive more carefully.

Photo Enforcement: Disadvantages Photo enforcement, however, is not without its flaws. In fact, its most vehement detractors are drivers who claim that photo enforcement isn't a tool for safety, but for moneymaking. For drivers, the system's worst flaw is that it does not make distinctions between vehicle owner and driver. It doesn't matter who sped through a red light; the vehicle's owner will get the citation. Another disadvantage is the time lag between infractions and citations. A third comes in the form of prohibitive infrastructure and installment costs. In relation to this, the difficulty in selecting intersections and equipment suppliers may be a big source of headache, too. The final and the biggest drawback to photo enforcement, however, is that it is always coupled with legislative issues. In some states, even, photo enforcement has been declared illegal.

Without public and political support, photo enforcement will never even see the green light in other American states. Clearly, the system has a long way to go before it becomes the unanimously accepted solution to the problem of red light running. But reality can be different. The role played by crime scene investigators on TV can be different from real life. This is why some things need to be set straight about the CSI career. This article will address the 3 things all aspiring crime scene investigators must know before they become one.

1.Those aspiring to be crime scene investigators must know that not all law enforcement agencies will hire a civilian CSI. There are various reasons for this.

One of the reasons is that the agency may not be big enough to dedicate a person to doing this job. So what these types of agencies do is have a police officer to play the role of CSI. This way, the officer can be doing other things when he or she is not collecting crime scene evidence.

Another reason is that the budget is just not there to support the position of a CSI. Like everything else in life, money is also an issue for law enforcement agencies. They have budgets and limited resources they have to live under. What these law enforcement agencies do when there is a crime is request for the help of a CSI from other friendly law enforcement agencies. This way, they save the cost of having a CSI on staff.

2.A CSI must be available to work 24/7. Crime has no appointed time. It can happen any minute or hour of the day. It does not know the weekend.

So, somebody who wants to work as a CSI must avail themselves at all times. You may be called in the middle of dinner or in the middle of your kid's birthday party. You have to be ready and willing to pick up and go to the crime scene.

3.In the past, most crime scene investigators were trained in-house by law enforcement agencies. Thanks to television, this is changing. You now have colleges offering CSI education. You can get anywhere from certificate to masters degree in crime scene investigation.

But keep in mind that all the education will not replace the additional training you will receive by the law enforcement agency that employs you. There is nothing like real life training and guidance from real life CSIs. But the education you get from college will definitely give you an advantage, both in getting the job and performance after you get the job.

I have covered the 3 things I believe you should know before becoming a crime scene investigator. There are of course other things you have to know. Granted the Drug Enforcement Administration has extensive training to prepare you for the job, a degree in criminal justice, police science, or law enforcement will give you a leg up on the competition.

Because employees know what is expected of them and what will happen if they violate the rules, a code of ethics goes a long way towards encouraging ethical behavior. However, codes cannot possibly cover every situation. Companies must also create an environment in which employees recognize the importance of complying with the written code. Managers must provide direction by fostering communication, actively modeling and encouraging ethical decision making, apart from investing in training employees to make ethical decisions.

Sometimes, even employees who want to act ethically may find it difficult to do so. Unethical practices can become ingrained in an organization. When a dog is being trained, a bond develops between handler and dog that reinforces the behavior that is to be expected from the dog. 2. Ask yourself after you read a paragraph, "What exactly did that paragraph say?" Spend a couple of seconds summarizing the contents of the paragraph. While doing this look at the paragraph to help you remember where important information is located.

3. Without fail there will be one or more questions asking you to identify the main idea. Usually a passage will have a few sentences stating the author's main idea. While reading, underline these sentences. This will save you valuable time.

5. If you are totally confused by a sentence or phrase in the passage, read the sentence before and after the difficult sentence to clarify its meaning. If you're still confused, move on. Don't dwell too long or you'll lose valuable time.

6. Try to visualize by forming a mental picture of the events described in the passage as you read. When you are able to visualize something, it's easier to comprehend.

7. Answer the questions based on the information in the passage, not prior knowledge. If you don't agree with something stated in the passage this is not the time to argue your point. Remember your goal is to get the highest score. In this part of the test, you are being tested on your ability to read and comprehend, not your knowledge of the subject.

Do read actively, not passively. Pause briefly after each paragraph to think about the points made by the author. Jot down a brief outline as you go.

Don't get too concerned with details as you read a passage, especially long passages. Just take notes of where the details were in the passage. You can quickly list statistics, numbers, dates, names titles, etc.

Do pay attention to the passage structure. Is it organized chronologically, by comparison of two or more arguments, or was there some other classification system? This will help you locate details later.

Do summarize the passage. Take a few seconds to recap the main idea of the passage. This may help you answer several questions quickly.
