And while we're on the subject of stopping distances, the distance that it takes your vehicle to stop depends on four factors. A higher speed, heavier vehicle, weaker brakes and poor road surface will all increase the distance that it takes you to stop. So it's important to know the capabilities of your vehicle and learn to drive within them.

And one final word about stopping distances. If your car is equipped with an ABS braking system, it will prevent your brakes from locking up and allow you more control, but it won't bring your car to a stop any quicker.

This was a project on a 4-lane road with 1/2 of the two lanes on my side paved... and the other 1/2 getting prepared for paving to continue. The problem is that the 1/2 that was paved was the left lane and this caused a height difference andquot;ridgeandquot; of approximately 1 - 2 inches of asphalt between the two lanes (of course I was in the right andquot;low-sideandquot; lane).

This wouldn't have been a problem if I could have stayed in the lane I was in... but once into the paving area all cars had to merge from the right to the left lane. Speeds on this road were about 40 miles per hour and on a normal motorcycle this would have been scary enough! On a chopper (let alone a wide rear tire) it was one of the scariest things I have had to do. In the moment before the transition I tried to slow down as much as I could in the andquot;bumper to bumperandquot; traffic, gripped the handlebars firmly, and then once there was an opening in the traffic to move over I tried to make the andquot;cutandquot; at as sharp of an angle as was possible.

Let me just say that andquot;I made itandquot; but it was really an unstable situation for a few seconds. It made me remember why Driver Education schools teach you that andquot;if your tire goes off the road... stay off the road and slow way down... and then sharply turn back on when there is a safe margin to do soandquot; and that is in a 4-wheel CAR!

I think that was the closest I have come to andquot;going downandquot; on a bike in over 20 years... so, I am writing this down so I don't forget. When you have to cross over and onto a ridge that is running parallel to your path of travel:

Slow down as much as possible (I didn't do this enough). Get a large safety margin between other traffic (Wait for a large opening). Get a firm grip on the handlebars. Try to cross-over the ridge at a strong angle (don't try to ease up on the ridge). I didn't do any of these things very well and it almost ended in a crash. For me, my biggest mistake was #1... so next time I am faced with this I will be sure to slow down much more and get a better angle on the ridge.

You've bowled enough to know that it's a serious sport. Closing your eyes, holding your breath and hoping for the best as you hurl a house ball towards the waiting pins is not your best choice...and you know it.



But just how does that "pro" in the next lane over make his bowling ball do those awesome tricks?



His ball screams from one side of the lane to the other, only to come out of nowhere, right into that sweet spot and "STRIKE!" again and again.



The answer is simple. By taking advantage of the ball's center of gravity, he gains incredible control over how his ball moves down the lane.

How does the center of gravity work?

Out of all the factors that can affect how a bowling ball moves down the lane, the center of gravity is the one that can make the biggest difference to the beginning bowler. Look at the balls in the pro shop. You will notice a small, off-color dot. This mark denotes the center of gravity on that ball. Just beneath this spot are a couple of ounces of extra weight, which allow the ball to roll straight when the finger holes have been drilled. The ball would wobble down the lane without this extra weight.

Clever bowlers realized that by drilling the holes slightly off of the center of gravity, the ball would be heavier on one side, shifting the center of gravity to that side. The ball would react differently when thrown, hooking to one side or the other, ensuring better control of the ball and hitting more pins, depending on the placement of the grip holes. Amazing!

Pupils from Radnor Valley County Primary School learned how to use laser speed cameras to measure the speed of speeding cars, which can cause accidents necessitating car insurance claims.

However, speeding motorists -- who often risk increased car insurance premiums, not to mention accidents; large and small -- could perhaps have been a little surprised when asked to explain their actions to schoolchildren, according to the Powys County Times newspaper.

PC Lyn Heard told the newspaper: "I would expect a motorist, who would have to answer to a group of school children, to modify their future behaviour while using the roads."

Sarah Morris, a road safety project manager, added: "Inappropriate speed on Powys roads is one of the major causes of road traffic collisions."

The following tips are all suggestions for ensuring the safety of the cyclist - as well as any others traveling on the road either on another cycle or in motor vehicle.

1. Make the motorist know you are there - where bright colors at all times and have front and rear lights on your bike after dusk and before dawn or in inclement weather.

2. Ride defensively and be predictable so motorists know that you know what you are doing and feel comfortable on the road with you. Be courteous and respectful of the rules of the road and conditions at any location.

3. Don't weave in and out of empty spaces on the side of the road between any parked vehicles. Others on the road cannot see you and predict what you are going to do. Cycle in a straight line parallel with the traffic and with parked cars.

4. Use hand signals for turns, lane changes and stops. Use your left arm with a finger pointed for left turns and right arm with a finger pointed for right turns. It helps gain mutual respect between the cyclist and motorists.

5. As with motorists, be aware of your surroundings as you ride your bike. Always be aware of other cars, children and pets by scanning each side street and residential areas.

6. When traffic is stop and go - you - the cyclist, can move as fast as the vehicles in the traffic. Don't weave in and out of the vehicles in traffic. Ride well into the lane when the traffic is stop and go. If you hug the curb, you are less visible and it is tempting for drivers to squeeze by.

7. Don't try to gain ground at red lights by passing a line of cars on your left. It is illegal and can cause an accident if the first car is making a right on red or if oncoming traffic has a green arrow allowing them to make a left turn crossing in front of you and the vehicles stopped along side of you. Wait out the red light and proceed with the same actions as a motor vehicle.

8. Be aware of sun glare in early morning and late in the day. Not only will it hinder your clear view of the road, but it hinders the motorists too and they may not see you. If possible, alter your route so that you don't ride directly into the sun.

In summary, always keep in mind, IF A MOTORIST CAN'T SEE YOU - THEY CAN'T AVOID YOU! Be aware of your surroundings and while pedaling always be prepared to brake.
