The ONET Occupational Database

The information I will describe below was developed by United States Government agencies including but not limited to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The ONET database is a treasure trove of occupational data and is the largest of its kind.

At the heart of the process is a concept called the ONET Content Model. Go to www.onetonline.org to read along. It will be helpful for your career search to be acquainted with the job titles that the leading occupational source identifies as related occupations.

How They Do It

In order for the ONET database to provide what I call the 'transition trees' for every occupation, they needed to develop a codification and classification system that they call the SOC taxonomy. SOC stands for Standard Occupational Classification and the taxonomy is a group of standardized characteristics they use to develop job profiles in hundreds of occupations. The taxonomy includes 812 occupational classifications/profiles today.

Why It is Important for You

The ONET database is the only database that combines and relates occupational classifications with Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.(KSA's). It is the KSA library of characteristics that make up the backbone of every occupational profile. Each worker possess a unique set of knowledge, skills, and abilities -- but you also share commonalities among and between many other occupational profiles. These are referred to as the 'related occupations' that are discussed and analyzed below.

The SOC Taxonomy

Here is an example of how the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) taxonomy model works. The SOC was developed by the Department of labor to classify the entire population of occupations. Occupations that share knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics are grouped within the same SOC family. Most of the occupations titles are strongly related, but sometimes titles you might think are related are not. I tested this theory on two titles that I assumed would be related, but found out otherwise.

I have known several computer programmers and many technical people who are also amateur musicians. I've read that the reason is that programmers and musicians share a love of mathematics and patterns. To test that theory I analyzed the ONET taxonomy to see how closely Computer Programmers and Musicians were related.

Computer Programmers are categorized under SOC 15.
Musicians are classified under SOC 27.

A search for 'Computer Programmer' returned 504 occupations sorted by relevancy.
Music Directors and Music Teachers had a relevance score of 1 out of 100. This is the lowest score.
Mathematical science teachers also had a relevance of 1 out of 100.

According to the experts at ONET, there is a weak link between computer programmers and musicians on the ONET Relevancy scale.

Next, I followed the daisy chain of 'related occupations'. Here is what I found:

Level 1. Computer Programmer (SOC 15) is related to Computer Operator (SOC 43)
Level 2. Computer Operator is related to Desktop Publisher (SOC 43)
Level 3: Desktop Publisher is related to Film and Video Editors (SOC 27)
Level 4: Film and Video Editors is related to Fine Artists, Including Painters, Sculptors, and Illustrators (SOC 27)

I searched on the Musician Occupation and found this:

Level 1: Musician (instrumental) (SOC 27) is related to Film and Video Editors (SOC 27).
Yet, there is no direct link from that title to Musician. The KSA profile seems to flow in one direction.

Conclusion:

Everyone has an "X" factor. While the taxonomy is a valuable tool and I encourage everyone to use the ONET system, let's recognize that creativity and imagination cannot be placed in a box.<bio>Perry Maisin is a business communicator with 25 years of experience in resume writing, business process documentation, and technical staffing.
Government career outlook predictions aren't developed yet for the Virtual Assistance industry, whether that's because it's a relatively new field or because the tasks done by VAs are as varied as the VAs themselves remains to be seen. One has to examine similar fields and skill-sets to see how VAs will fare in the years to come. By looking at these similar fields, you can see that the growth outlook for Virtual Assistance is above average. The question of "Will this job still be around in 20 years?" can be answered by looking at the services that a specific VA is offering and closely-related "traditional" employment fields.

The most important thing to remember, though, is to keep current with technology and software that can progress your business. If you only know outdated technology, then you and your business are outdated and your clients may go elsewhere for service. Keep adding to your services and learn everything you can about your niche market and what they currently need.

With many businesses restructuring and downsizing (getting rid of middle managers), companies are utilizing more and more secretarial and administrative support staff to take over those duties. If you offer administrative support as a VA, and market yourself as an off-site solution to those downsizing companies, your "job security" looks pretty good. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that you will have competition from on-site employees for these positions.

If you offer more specialized services than administrative support, you have different chances for sustaining an ongoing career. Here are two examples:

If you offer Public Relations (PR)services, your occupational outlook is rosy. With so many different types of organizations -- such as businesses, nonprofits, universities, hospitals and more - looking for media specialists and PR specialists to do more than just "tell their story." Creativity, initiative, good judgment and the ability to communicate effectively are some of the skills necessary to succeed in this job. There's lots of competition in this role, but employment/contracts for PR specialists is expected to grow faster than average, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

If you offer Desktop Publishing services, your occupational outlook is also great. Many companies are beginning to outsource these services, as opposed to having in-house staff. With experience and/or a degree in graphic design or a related field, desktop publishers have a variety of different organizations to market themselves to. VAs offer an affordable alternative to hiring a graphic design firm.

Whether you specialize in desktop publishing and graphic design or public relations or another niche specialty, it's clear that Virtual Assistance is catching on and the VAs who are out there aren't going anywhere. With more and more employers and companies looking to outsource projects turning to offsite personnel to fulfill these needs, the view of using "virtual" workers is changing. It's no longer as common to hear objections such as "How do I know you'll really be working?" when proposing using a VA to someone who never has before. Many people have heard of VAs now or know someone who uses theirs. In most cases, once someone has a VA on their team, they don't turn back to in-house staff to fulfill those duties.

To check out similar fields' occupational outlooks, visit the Occupational Outlook Handbook (2006-07 edition) put out by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics at http://www.bls.gov.. <bio>If you're an aspiring Virtual Assistant, claim your free e-report "Virtual Assistant Business: A Basic Guide to Start Your Own" at http://www.virtualassistantbusiness.com </bio>

Let's see what makes working as a scientist so rewarding.

Challenging Work

The work of scientists is similar to that of engineers. They use their creativity, energy and talents combined with their mathematics and science background to help solve everyday problems. Scientists get to work in the design, creation and development of new products, as well as work in the production, monitoring, maintenance and even testing of these products.

Career Tidbits

Here is some interesting information about a career in science according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook.

- Scientists generally work 40 hours per week, but may be asked to work more under tight deadlines and heavy work schedules. Their daily tasks often involve work in a laboratory or even in the field.

- Scientists constantly need to learn new things in order to keep on top of the latest research and technological changes.

- Scientists typically work in a group on a research project. Collaboration is a big part of being a scientist.

- Gaining a bachelor's degree in your particular area of interest is a minimum. You may want to pursue an advanced degree. You will most likely be surrounded by people with a Ph.D and even some with medical degrees. You will not be able to go much further than a position as a Research Associate without an advanced degree.

- Scientists commonly gain employment in academic institutes (like universities and non-profit organizations). They may also work in corporate environments.

A career as a scientist is a very prestigious career field. Many important people in history were considered scientists. The best scientists are those that are curious about the world we live in and strive to make it a better place. <bio>Check into career opportunities as a scientist at http://www.sciencecareersecrets.com. </bio>

Engineering is a great career choice for many. With 1.4 million engineering jobs in the U.S. alone, it's no wonder this career field is a popular one. Let's take a look at a few reasons why engineering is such a hot and rewarding career.

Challenging Work

Engineers get to combine their creativity, mathematics and science background with technology in order to help solve everyday problems. They get to work on the design and development of new products, help with their production, monitoring, maintenance and testing.

In alphabetical order, the main engineering specializations are: aerospace, agricultural, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, electronics, environmental, health and safety, industrial, marine, materials, mechanical, mining and geological, nuclear and petroleum.

Career Tidbits

The following list includes some interesting information about this career field according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook:

- Engineers generally work 40 hours per week, but the workload may increase under tight deadlines. Daily engineering tasks often involve work outside the desk space including lab research, field work, exploration and construction sites, monitoring stations and more.

- Engineers need to continue their educations to keep on top of the latest research and technological changes. Some companies offer funding for this. Not staying on top of the changes can mean the difference between maintaining employment and being laid off.

- The Internet has opened the doors for telecommuters (who may often come aboard for less money via long-distance arrangements), but local engineers are still in demand. Engineers often work on-site teaming up with others and their support staff.

- In 2004, engineers with higher degrees (Master's and PhD's) earned more. And for specialty engineers, workers earned well into the 6-figure ranges.

- Rapid growth in the technology sector means companies must seek the means to stay ahead of competitors with product and technology development, testing, and monitoring. Therefore, engineers are in demand and will be for some time to come. <bio>So check into career opportunities in your area and see what rewards you can reap as an engineer! Within occupational therapy the term "occupation" is used in its widest sense to refer to the wide variety of roles and activities that a person engages in during everyday life. Occupational Therapists recognize that occupations give structure and meaning to a person's life. Occupational Therapists believe that if a person is not able to engage in an adaptive way with occupations that are important and meaningful to them, this can have a detrimental effect on their well-being.

It is this approach to physical, psychological and social dysfunction that makes the Occupational Therapy profession unique. Occupational therapists are concerned with treating the effect of illness or injury as it relates to the persons ability to function. For example, an Occupational Therapist working within the specialist area of hand rehabilitation, would be very knowledgeable in biological sciences and physical medicine and be able to communicate and work allied to surgeons and physiotherapist colleagues working in this area. The difference would be that whilst the physiotherapist may focus on the restoration of, movement, and strength of the hand muscles, the Occupational Therapist would focus on the persons ability to use the hand during activity and occupations. So, an occupational therapist may spend time retraining the person to be able to grip a telephone or sign their name, if these were activities the person highlighted as important for them to work on.

Occupational Therapists have developed their own theories about occupation and also draw from the academic discipline occupational science. In addition, occupational therapists also need to understand information from a variety of other disciplines because they work with people experiencing illness, disease and social problems. Therefore, during the three to four years degree level training, an occupational therapist will be taught from disciplines such as sociology, psychology, psychiatry, physical medicine, developmental theory and biological sciences such as anatomy and physiology. Occupational Therapy's knowledge base includes these disciplines.

Occupational Therapists work in such a variety of settings and it would be impossible to have an in-depth understanding of information from all of the disciplines mentioned. Therefore, occupational therapists will usually specialise in an area after a few years of their career and develop a deeper understanding of theories and practices that are specific to their chosen area.

For example, an Occupational Therapist working within the field of mental-health will become knowledgeable about information from psychological and psychiatric disciplines and use such information and techniques in their everyday practice. They will also work alongside professionals from such disciplines, the OT's role to bring their unique understanding of occupational theories and models to the professional skills mix.

Occupational therapy has organized the vast amount of information from other disciplines into frames or reference. These frames of reference contain complementary theories that can be applied within a specific area of practice (Creek, 1997). Occupational Therapists specializing in mental health draw from frames of reference such as cognitive, cognitive behaviour, human developmental, occupational behaviour, psychodynamic and rehabilitative. Again, which frame of reference the occupational therapist used will depend on the unique needs of the client and also what is favoured by the setting in which they work or which approach is most supported by clinical evidence of effectiveness.

Occupational therapists working within the field of mental-health today, will often become very familiar and competent at working from and using techniques from the cognitive behavioural therapy frame of reference because this approach is currently very popular and well-researched. I now practice privately, working with individuals experiencing psychological, emotional and behavioural problems and my main frame of reference is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Edinburgh.

In sum, occupational therapists are highly qualified and professional trained healthcare practitioners who draw from the same knowledge base as other well -known professions, whist at the same time having a unique focus that is occupational in nature. Occupational therapists focus on the person and their life as a whole as opposed to just focusing on symptoms and illness labels. Occupational Therapy is available from the NHS and there are now more and more occupational therapists practicing privately. The college of occupational therapists would be able to provide you with a list of private practitioners with specialist skills in different areas. I am able to offer Occupational Therapy, Edinburgh and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Edinburgh.

Every mother I have ever known has prayed for an "EZ labor". Unfortunately, and this is especially the case in first time moms, the birthing process is anything but easy! Still, if you do your homework, have a plan of action and implement it, you can make the birth of your child easier on you than it otherwise would have been. Many expectant mothers are plagued by questions surrounding how painful labor actually is, whether or not to get an epidural, if non-medical techniques can provide enough pain relief to get you through the process and more. Others are just absolutely terrified, which is totally and completely normal.

The trick to having an EZ labor is to be as educated as possible about the birthing process, because when you know what to expect you know how to plan ways around certain things. Also, the more you know the less likely you are to have panic attacks when you think about the pain you'll be going through. One thing a lot of women experience when going through labor is getting physically sick. Drugs or no drugs, lots of women find themselves vomiting more than they'd otherwise prefer. Some drugs, however, cause more nausea than others and include nubain, demerol, morphine, diluadid and stadol. These are all narcotics that can contribute to ill feelings, and if that's a concern of yours you might want to avoid them all.

When it comes to preventing feelings of sickness and having the most EZ labor possible, you should look into sucking on a hard candy or taking anti-nausea medications. As far as pain goes, you're more likely to experience greater levels of it if your pregnancy is induced. So, naturally, if at all possible you might want to avoid that. Water birth, on the other hand, some women swear by and others avoid. Looking into whether or not it is something for you might be worth your time. <bio>If you're pregnant, be sure to visit the Pregnancy Forum at http://www.ThePregnancyForum.com/ today.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is a U.S. Department of Labor organization devoted to the health and safety of American workers. They offer various tactics to reduce MSD's (musculoskeletal disorders) in the workplace. Their Outreach and Assistance program, designed to interface with workers directly, is one of four in their "four-pronged" approach to aiding the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. The other aspects of the "four-pronged" approach are: Guidelines, Enforcement and the National Advisory Committee.

Ergonomics is the science of designing and maintaining products, machines and work environments that cause the least stress upon the human body and result in the fewest instances of injury and discomfort. The four prongs of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's approach to ergonomic safety have different areas of focus. The Enforcement branch has to do with the inspections carried out by this and other organizations to assure that work environments are as safe as they can be. When they find organizations that violate standards of ergonomic safety they alert authorities and attempt to alter the situation. The National Advisory Committee branch controls the applications of research related to the study of ergonomics. The Guidelines branch develops industry specific guidelines based on statistics related to ergonomic industries in the workplace. Finally, the Outreach and Assistance branch helps businesses, small and large alike, identify and apply good practices in ergonomics to their workplaces to increase the safety and comfort of their employees.

OSHA releases studies on specific industries to help those industries create a more ergonomically satisfying environment for their employees. One such industry is the Retail Grocery industry. They first identified some of the risks particularly associated with employment in the Retail Grocery industry, specifically, force, repetition, awkward posture and static postures. OSHA maintains that these factors dramatically increase the chances of the Retail Grocery employee of serious injuries and illnesses such as, muscle strains and back injuries, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, Epicondylitis and trigger finger. OSHA identifies certain activities, such as stacking shelves, that place employee's bodies in awkward positions that they must maintain for a period of time. Some of their solutions are as simple as the following, related to icing produce. They recommend a better ice machine that takes the stress of scooping and loading ice away from the worker by letting gravity and the ice machine pour ice into buckets on a cart below the machine. In this way, the ice is ready to be transported when the worker approaches the machine, cutting any bending, scooping and lifting the employee might otherwise have had to perform and making the overall experience more physically pleasant. <bio>Leon Groom writes about http://www.ergo-items.com/keyboards.htm, http://www.ergo-items.com/keyboards/split/ergosplit.htm and http://www.ErgoLance.com </bio>

Quick, name the city in the United States that offers nurses the most career opportunities. If you guessed New York City, you hit the nail on the head. In 2005, there were nearly 70,000 jobs for skilled nurses in New York City. But there's more to the demographic than just numbers. When it comes to nursing jobs, New York is number one in more ways than one.

Salaries

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean salary for a registered nurse nationally is $52,810. In New York, 72% of all registered nurses are earning more than $55,000 annually. The average salary for a registered nurse in New York is $64,000 as compared to the national average of $49,840. (all statistics from BLS). A licensed practical nurse can count on a salary in the $30,000-$45,000 range. New York is the single top market for nursing jobs across the country.

Flexibility

Registered and licensed nurses have incredible flexibility in work schedules and types of jobs. Nursing jobs in New York offer a wide range of opportunities that can fit nearly anyone who enjoys working with and helping people. There are nursing jobs available at prestigious teaching hospitals and universities, at inner city clinics, at upscale doctor's offices and in schools or with the health department. A New York nurse might specialize in obstetrics or dermatology, in pediatrics or oncology or in any one of myriad other specialties. Nowhere else in the world is there such a wide variety of nursing jobs available.

Scheduling is every bit as flexible. As hospital and other medical facility administrators try to cope with the shortage of nurses (predicted to hit 800,000 by 2020); they've started offering schedules that fit anyone's way of life. It's not unusual for a nurse to work three twelve hour shifts in a week and have four days off, or work just weekend nights -- for a premium salary.

Career Options

New York has a lot to offer nurses in the way of career opportunities and continuing education. The state is home to some of the best teaching hospitals in the world. Nurses who are ready to move on will find it easy to make a lateral move to a different type of nursing, or to climb the career ladder in nearly any nursing specialty field imaginable. Here are just a few 'non-traditional' New York nursing jobs.

Community Health Nurse

Not all nurses work in hospitals and nursing homes. Community health nursing jobs in New York include on site nursing in transitional residences, or home visit nurses who help people stay in their homes rather than ending up in a nursing home or institution. Working in community health can include being part of ground-breaking research, combating an unexpected epidemic or teaching new young mothers how to care for their babies in their own homes.

Policy Makers

For nurses who want to make a difference on a wide scale, there are many nursing jobs that include opportunities to help make policy. Nurses are integral team members at insurance companies, in government and on hospital boards. As a consultant to city and town councils, nurses help ensure that patient and family needs are met when the big companies make policies that affect nursing and medical care.

Occupational Health Nursing

More and more large businesses are including an on site nurse on their payroll. Occupational health nurses may work for a single company, doing preventive and assessment nursing, or work for a clinic or rehabilitation facility helping patients recover from sports and work-related injuries, or learn to live with limitations caused by their medical conditions. New York is at the forefront of many trends in nursing, and a nurse who chooses to specialize in occupational health will find many nursing jobs in New York.

Teaching Specialties

Nurse educators are very much in demand in any large city, and New York is no exception. Whether teaching nursing in a formal nursing school or delivering continuing education in the form of in-services and specialty courses, there's a place for a nurse with a talent for passing on knowledge to others.

In short, New York has a little of everything for those interested in pursuing a nursing career. From rural nursing to inner city health, there are thousands of open nursing jobs in New York. <bio>Rita Henry is a contributing editor for Nursing Job Finder, the leading job and resource site for the Nursing Industry.
The statistics tutor is one of the most sought after tutors in the academic industry, especially in the grade and high school levels. These are individuals who teach students who are taking up statistics better understand their current lessons in the class. Sometimes these students need the help of a tutor on statistics because they have a slow learning pace and would not be able to catch up with the lessons being taught in class. On the other hand, there are those who want tutors because they want to advance their learning for better performance in class. Either way the statistics tutor has all these things set out for him or her and his or her tutorial work.

Of course, this kind of level of practicability requires a lot of responsibility to be fulfilled. The statistics tutor has to take measures in order to assure that all those students that he teaches gets all the help with the statistics problem that he or she needs. Otherwise, who would want to consult a bad tutor? It is important that matters such as these are taken into high regard to as to improve the knowledge and understanding of the students in statistics, or to the very least help these students cope with their statistics class. Here are some tips as to becoming a better statistics tutor.

First of all, at the onset of the tutorial sessions, the tutor in statistics must know his or her student well. This is very important because it is only through knowing the level of learning or personality of the students can the statistics tutor provide the correct modules for the student in question. This task goes down on two levels. First, which is the general aspect, the tutor in statistics must know the tutee over-all. Among the important information that he or she would need is which level of statistics the student is under (whether it's middle school or high school, etc.). This will give you good idea as to which references to consult and which modules to bring out. Secondly, the statistics tutor should constantly update himself of the daily or regular progress of the tutee. This involves correlating the student's current lesson in class with the lesson he will tackle with the student for that specific session.

Furthermore, if the students have homework, do not answer it for them. As the statistics tutor, it is his or her responsibility to guide the student in answering his or her own homework. This is because if the tutor gives away the answer to the student without any effort from the part of the latter, the student will merely develop dependence on the statistics tutor and not learn anything at all, which is a total opposite of why these tutorials were consulted in the first place. Help the student help himself.

Tutors should constantly update themselves with what is being taught in school and are always expected to know what the students need to know. Otherwise, the whole concept of learning outside or after classes loses the whole point.<bio>Jeremy is a senior member of SB, a Los Angeles based online tutoring company which offers statistics homework help</bio>

The United States Department of Labor has developed a set of guidelines that can assist the owner, operator or manager of a business in accommodating in the workplace an employee that suffers from cumulative trauma disorders of CTDs. More information on these guidelines can be found through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) which is an agency of the U.S. Department of Labor. OSHA maintains an Internet website at http://www.osha.gov.

When it comes to workplace accommodation, there are different types of problems associated with CTDs. For example, one of the areas that people with CTDs suffer involves fatigue and weakness. Accommodations for this type of condition, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, include:

-Reduce or eliminate physical exertion and workplace stress

-Schedule periodic rest breaks away from the assigned workstation

-Provide for the employee a more flexible work schedule and a more flexible use of leave time

-Allow or permit the employee to work from home

Some employees have found that they are suffering from fine motor impairment as the result of CTDs. The U.S. Department of Labor through OSHA has suggested accommodations for this type of impairment, including:

-Implement ergonomic workplace and workstation design

-Provide alternative telephone and computer access for the employee

-Provide arm supports

-Provide grip and writing aids

-Provide a book holder and a page turner

-Provide the employee with a note taker

-Provide ergonomic workplace tools and other ergonomic adaptations

Finally, there are people afflicted with CTDs that suffer from gross motor impairment. Once again, the U.S. Department of Labor through OSHA has recommendations for accommodating people in the workplace that suffer from CTDS. These accommodations include:

-Modify the workplace to make it more readily accessible to the employee

-Provide more accessible parking for the employee

-Provide a more accessible entrance to the workplace for the employee

-Install automatic door openers for use by the employee

-Modify the workstation to make to more ergonomic and accessible for the employee

-Make sure that equipment and materials used by the employee are accessible readily

-Move the employees workstation closer to other areas which the employee accesses regularly

-Provide the afflicted employee with carts and related lifting and moving devices

Again, this information can be accessed in greater detail through the U.S. Department of Labor and OSHA at http://www.osha.gov. <bio>James Brown writes about http://www.ergo-items.com, http://www.ergo-items.com/cursor/trackballs/ergonomic_trackballs.htm and http://www.ergo-items.com/accessories/ergo_accessories.htm </bio>

If you have been looking all over the internet for a quality labor union website that will give you timely and accurate information you may feel quite frustrated. There are many sites out there that claim to provide you with this information, but when you visit they always seem to fall short. This isn't something that is intentional, there is just a lot of information to cover and if the people who run the site are not dedicated to getting all of the information out there to you, you'll find that it simply cannot give you the data that you are seeking.

When you find a quality labor union website you will find that it has up to date news on it. This may involve information on boycotts as well as information from different counties. There is simply a lot of information that you could glean about your member status and the benefits that are available to you, but only if you have an accurate and up to date resource. While you may be frustrated with your efforts to find such a place, there is hope that someone could get on top of this information and keep it updated.

A labor union website will also provide you with information about all of the services and resources that are available to you because you are affiliated with such an organization. These services may include discounts on legal services, insurance services, mortgage and real estate services, health and dental care, and even help buying a new car. These are services that will potentially provide you with unlimited savings and it would be good to have this information in hand when you need it. The problem that many people, like you, have is that they don't want to have to jump through hoops to find the benefits and then have to jump through more hoops to find the providers that will give you this help or discounts.

If you have given up hope on finding a labor union website that can help you, you may want to give one more website a try. This website is known as Union Power and will give you news, updates, relevant information and statistics, as well as information on all of the benefits and services that are available to you. The website offers information to all members, not just a distinct few or those that work in a specific industry.
One of my friends, a former community college student at the school at the same time I was working there, has decided to go into biotech research. She is technologically confident and at the same time is fascinated with and good at working with the environment, and hopes to make some important contributions to our area (Northern California). So what does it mean to do biotech research? What does it take to get into the field of biotechnology? And how much dough can you make?

Biotech research can involve anything in the life sciences, from 'human health and computational disease mapping to crop and tree improvements,' as those studies are done by students at the Biotech Research Center at Michigan Tech, from 'forensics, [the] testing of biotoxins, and management of the nation's organ transplantation process' to 'drug development, medical diagnostics, biomedical engineering, and environmental analysis,' such as those done at Virginia Biotechnology Research Park, or from biogenetic engineering, farming, or nutritional assessment and engineering to toxicology, biomedical imaging and engineering, or food, drug, and environmental technologies, as conducted by University of California Biotechnology Research and Education Program (UC BREP).

How much a person in biotech research makes depends on what funding the biotech research facilities are backed by. At the Biotech Research Center at Michigan Tech, for instance, funding is at $8.3 million, provided by such organizations as the U.S.Department of Energy (DOE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Health (NIH), and the U.S. Drug Administration (USDA).

At the same time, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the biotech research engineers (as well as the biomedical engineer) make an average of $48,503 with a bachelor's degree and around $59,667 with a master's degree.

But will the jobs in biotech research be there when my friend and you finish your degrees. Well, again according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the projection for job growth in the field of biotech research in particular but biotechnological engineering in general looks good through 2014, with the growth 'much faster than average.

This, BLS declares, will be attributed to the aging of the population, the increased focus on health issues, and the demand for 'better medical biomedical engineers.' Because of the sensitive interest in biotech research and biomedicine, more degrees are granted in these fields or area sand hopefully, more grants are awarded. <bio>Luke T.
Labor Unions

If the employees request the establishment of a labor union, the employer must assent and offer assistance. Moreover, certain thresholds apply which require employers to hire a full-time employee labor representative (companies with at least 200 employees must hire one employee labor representative, with more hires necessary at higher thresholds). Joint Ventures and WFOEs must allocate an amount equal to at least two percent of the actually paid monthly wages of all the employees as trade union funds (this amount must be paid to the local labor bureau if the enterprise has not established a trade union). The trade union must use these funds in accordance with the trade union fund management measures issued by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, of which the labor union is required to be a member.

Labor union representatives have the right to attend board meetings, although they do not have voting rights, and they should be invited to attend board meetings if labor issues are discussed. The trade union performs a significant advisory function with respect to individual and collective labor contracts, termination of employees, mediation of conflicts, layoffs, and assisting laid-off employees in finding new employment. The labor union may not impose its will on the employer in these matters. Interestingly, labor unions do not even have the right to strike. However, labor union consent is required in some Mandamp;A transactions.

Communist Party Organization

If the employees request the establishment of a Communist Party organization in the workplace, the employer must assent and may be required to provide assistance. A Communist Party organization must be established in any workplace with at least three Communist Party members, and the employer has an obligation to accommodate and support it (details of this obligation are still ambiguous at this point but will likely vary according to the size of the enterprise and the level of Communist Party membership among employees). <bio>David Carnes is licensed to practice law in California.
Need help with statistics? Try asking your teacher for extra help or a tutor who might be willing to share some study time with you. But if you can't the best way to teach yourself statistics is to find your own resources for your own benefit. You can search for them on the internet or you can consult the books in your library. There are so many ways that you can do to get help with statistics, and all of which can be done in your free time when you are not in your statistics class where you can ask your teacher.

Try looking for other references that might help with statistics. But of course, make sure first that you check how the prescribed textbook in school explains it and if you don't understand the formula, problem or principle, then you can go to what we could call as secondary sources. But if you don't know where to start as to which book to look for, try checking the bibliography pages of the textbook. Usually, the better textbooks will give its readers other sources for more readings and even recommend them for expanded learning. But if there are none, don't worry. The good thing about statistics is that the principles and formulae don't change at all, only the explanations differ from book to book. Just make sure that the book you will be picking out of the shelves are those that are similar in terms of the designation of you educational level as the textbook on help with statistics.

With the textbook, try checking the examples or the problems that have been solved for the reader. This is good if you have already understood the principal definition and scope of the formula or principle and only need to find more examples to help with statistics. But if you have not understood the concept well yet then perhaps the book you are holding will better enlighten you on the matter. Also, take advantage of the present problems that are provided for the student for review at the end of each chapter. They will definitely help with statistics.

After you have gone around the textbooks, perhaps one or two aside from the textbook prescribed by your school, you can also try the internet for help with statistics. For example, certain notable websites such as the Math Forum and other sites cater to students who have questions on particular fields in mathematics. Of course, this means that you will find good help with statistics because it falls under these subject matters. The good thing about these sites is that they usually explain and induce learning through example rather than just explaining theories. Before you post a question, you might want to check the posted questions first which have already answered because they might have the same question as yours. Also, check under your level of category so as to narrow your search.

A little bit of diligence and resourcefulness will definitely get you all the help you will need on you statistics class. You can even do a little bit of extra research to impress you teacher for extra points the next time you move on to the next lesson.<bio>Jeremy runs Statistics Brain, an Orange County based online company which provides statistics homework help</bio>

By the year 2020, the United States will face a nursing shortage of 800,000 unfilled registered nursing jobs -- and very few of those jobs are in traditional hospital settings. These days, a registered nursing job is as likely to take you into a laboratory or someone's living room as it is to put you at bedside in the recovery room. If you're just starting your career in nursing, or looking to make a change, take a look at some of the non-traditional settings that have registered nursing jobs available.

Home Health Registered Nursing Jobs

Home health care is one of the fastest growing sectors of the nursing profession. As hospitals and insurance companies struggle to lower the costs of delivering care, they've found that providing nursing care in the home makes more than financial sense. Most patients improve faster when they're in the familiar setting of their own home. Registered nursing jobs that involve home health care include geriatric nursing, visiting nurse jobs and community health nursing. Some popular home health registered nursing jobs include:

- Newborn visiting nurses make home calls on new mothers who have just been released from the hospital. They offer suggestions and assess physical and medical needs of both mother and child.

- Visiting chronic care nurses help keep patients at home who only require a few hours of skilled nursing care per day or week. They may change feeding tubes or start intravenous medications, assess medical needs or change dressings after surgery.

- Early intervention nurses work with families who have young children with medical needs at home. An EI nurse can make the difference between keeping a child at home or choosing institutionalization.

Occupational Health Registered Nursing Jobs

Occupational health is a growing field, and there are many different positions for registered nurses within it. An occupational health nurse may do initial assessments and physical examinations on site, assess medical needs if someone is injured on the job site or provide medical information and advice to employees of a company.

Public Health Registered Nursing Jobs

Do you dream of making a difference on a wide scale? Public health nurses are often involved in making policies that affect the population of entire cities and states. Among the options for work available in the public sector for nurses are:

- Clinic nurses do hands on patient care in a clinic setting. Registered nurses and nurse practitioners deliver care and advice to families and patients on nutrition, health, preventive care, birth control and medical care.

- Nurses working for the Department of Health may be involved in infectious disease control, monitoring compliance with health guidelines and consulting on medical policies for hospitals and other medical facilities.

School Nursing Jobs

School nurses work on site to help manage the medical needs of students. These days the school nurse may float from campus to campus, or be assigned to one school. Many schools now offer on site clinics for students, and a nurse working in a school clinic may be a student's primary health contact. They're responsible for doing emergency care, assessing medical needs and providing family contact points for school students.

Hospice Registered Nursing Jobs

Unlike traditional nursing homes, hospices offer round the clock skilled nursing in a homelike setting. Hospice nursing jobs offer the opportunity for a registered nurse to provide a personal touch to severely ill and terminal patients in a less clinical setting. Hospice nurses work under the supervision of doctors, but often have far more autonomy in making medical decisions.

A nursing career opens so many doors that it's impossible to fit them all into a brief overview. For more information on registered nursing jobs and career opportunities, visit the Bureau of Labor Statistics web site. <bio>Rita Henry is a contributing editor for Nursing Job Finder, the leading job and resource site for the Nursing Industry.
When the average math student does his statistics homework help might be needed in order for him to maximize the education purpose of that math assignment. Statistics is a branch of applied math which deals with the collection, processing and interpretation of data through various mathematical processes and formulae. Generally it is one of the first complex subjects that the math student will encounter in his or her entire formal education life. This entails that there will be a lot of adjustments as to the study habits and learning approaches to the subject, and the faster he or she adjusts to these changes the better will his or her entire performance be.

Going back the statistics homework help, it is a great deal of truth that many parents can no longer supervise nor advise their children in their homework, especially in terms of statistics or other math related assignments. This leaves the children with the task of either doing the homework alone with no guidance from the teacher or having to find other sources of help. Of course, an ideal student would be advised to take the latter measure so that he or she can find the statistics homework help he or she needs.

Enumerated below are some of the important details and practices that a student should know when self studying statistics in order to best get the most statistics homework help. Generally, these will guide the student as to what exactly to look for to better understand his or her homework. Most of the time these statistics homework help students by giving them bring home math problems related to the statistics subtopic they dealt with during class.

First thing that the student should know is to familiarize oneself with the terminologies related to the assignment. For example, if the homework calls for the solving of the mean, the statistics homework help in identifying which term to find that is actually the mean. As for the case of the mean, the description would be "the average of a set of numbers, which is achieved by adding all the given values and dividing them by the total number of number of numbers there are". At this point the student would already have his or her own idea as to how to derive the mean.

Secondly, deriving the formula related to the statistics homework help in answering the problem itself. Sometimes the formula alone already helps the student solve the homework without going to the third step. Usually these formulae are illustrated in textbooks right after they are defined.

Lastly, statistics homework help can be sourced from referencing other similar examples. Conveniently, these examples can be found right after the formula where you can find the definition as well. By comparing the manner in which the examples are solved and how the student's own homework problem should be solved, he or she gets a better view of the proper approach of similar problems in different perspectives.

So generally, you can find all the information that you would need in one statistics textbook.<bio>Robert is a senior member of MGT, a Los Angeles based online tutoring company which offers statistics homework help</bio>

Labor pains are part of giving birth to a baby. Mostly these are bearable and there are a lot that can be done to prevent suffering. By understanding where the pains in labor come from and what can be done about it, you are most likely to have a satisfying childbirth experience and wonderful birth memories.

Labor and birth of the baby is the effect of dilatation of the cervix, and contractions of the uterus and abdominal muscles. Dilation is the first stage of labor. In the second stage, strong expulsive efforts cause the advance and birth of the baby.

During your pregnancy, changes happen in your body to prepare for these events. The ligaments of your pelvis loosen to permit your pelvis to relax and allow your baby to come out. Other changes occur to adapt your body to accommodate childbirth. Despite these changes and modern medicine, it is unrealistic to aim for a childbirth without any discomforts.

Labor is said to begin when your uterus starts to contract regularly. In the days before the onset of labor, you may experience minor contractions that feel like tightening, and cause discomfort rather than pain. These contractions are important in aligning and positioning the baby for birth.

The first labor pains are grinding, scattered and irregular. Many women describe it as bad menstrual pains. The first labor pains are usually felt in the front site of the pelvis and groin. Pain is mainly caused by pressure on the abdominal and pelvic area due to powerful uterine contractions and stretching of the cervix, vagina and perineum. During labor, contractions increase in frequency and intensity and can become painful.

As labor proceeds, the pains start to appear in the abdomen. The cervix has to stretch to allow your baby to eventually pass through your birth canal. When the opening to the cervix is fully dilated, the second stage of labor -- during which your baby is born -- starts. As the baby's head advances further, pains are commonly felt at the back, hip and groin area. When the baby's birth is near, stretching of the perineum causes burning sensations. At this stage many women feel like they are going to burst. Majority of them, however, suffer only minor tears, if any, especially if good laboring positions and movement have been used to help the baby to rotate and find the easiest way out.

The baby passes through your birth canal and is born by a combination of the continuing contractions of your uterus, and your conscious effort to push your baby out by using the abdominal muscles. The physical and mental relief after vigorous laboring, and the ecstasy of getting your baby in your arms, are such a victory and pleasure that the last stage of labor - which is the birth of the placenta - is often unnoticed by the mother. As the placenta is much smaller than the baby is, and the birth canal is open, the uterine contractions push the placenta out easily.

We are so conditioned to expect pains in labor that its significance as part of the birth process is discounted. There is no need to automatically opt for epidural or -- on the other hand -- to give birth in severe pains without any labor pain relief. Unmanageable pain during labor and delivery is not normal or needed. Labor pains, when they are correctly managed, have an important part in assisting and guiding your body to give birth to a baby. <bio>Lena Leino, author of Easier, Shorter and Safer Birth, created an At-Home Labor Contraction Follow-up Chart so that you could easily document and see the progress of your labor.
