Cat health symptoms of kidney problems can lead to serious health issues for a cat. Chronic kidney failure happens to older cats more than it does to younger cats. Cats develop kidney problems gradually over time and usually do not show any signs until it becomes serious. With proper check ups and blood tests veterinarians can find problems before they become more serious.

Causes of Chronic Kidney Failure

Once a cat has chronic kidney failure, they will need special care and treatment. Kidney failure is irreversible and can lead to other health problems. Kidney failure is caused by many different reasons including trauma, bacterial infections, medications, toxins and cancer along with fungal infections and autoimmune disease. Kidney failure may also be due to hereditary or congenital abnormalities.

Some Cat Health Symptoms of Kidney Failure

One sign the cat has a medical problem is inability to urinate. The chronic kidney failure problem may be caused by kidney stones, urethral obstruction or bladder stones. If this symptom occurs, seek immediate medical attention before the problem becomes fatal to the cat. Kidney failure shows no early signs, but as it progresses, sign start to appear.

Another symptom of kidney failure is increased thirst. Because the cat is drinking more water, the urine does not bring along all the toxins in the kidneys, which remains in the kidneys and results in kidney failure. Other cat health symptoms of kidney failure are poor appetite, depression and lack of energy.

Cat health symptoms of kidney failure are diagnosed by blood tests and urinalysis. The BUN levels of a cat with kidney failure will be higher than a cat in perfect health. The Creatinine levels will also be higher than normal, which leads to the diagnosis of kidney failure in the cat.

Treating Chronic Kidney Failure

Treatment of kidney failure in cats requires kidney transplant or dialysis. By the time kidney failure is diagnosed the cat may already have so much damage to the kidney that any type of treatment would not benefit the cat and a decision to euthanize the cat before any more suffering occurs would have to be discussed.

Because every owner wants their cat to live a healthy and happy life kidney transplants have become more popular in cats and has allowed them to live a good life. If a kidney transplant does not happen, other methods of treatment may help the cat such as dialysis, which in most cases does work as it filters the kidneys and eliminates the toxins. This procedure requires weekly visits to a veterinary clinic for treatments, which requires a few hours of treatment. For more info see http://www.aboutcathealth.org/cat/Cat_Health_Issues/Ear_Issues.php on Cat Ear Issues.

If the cat has kidney failure a low protein diet helps maintain lower BUN levels, which helps with the metabolic system, but not the renal problems. Proper diets and proper fluid intake requires dedication on the owner's part. If the cat has a kidney transplant, hospitalization and further medications will be required for a successful kidney transplant that functions properly. <bio>You can also find more info on http://www.aboutcathealth.org/cat/Cat_Health_Issues/Cat_Health_Tips.php on Cat Health Tips and http://www.aboutcathealth.org/cat/Cat_Health_Issues/Cat_Wiskers.php on Cat Wiskers. http://Aboutcathealth.org is a comprehensive resource to find more information about cat health. </bio>

There are two primary types of kidney failure in humans. The first occurs fairly suddenly and is called "acute renal failure". We'll talk later about the causes of this condition.

The second disease is more insidious and occurs over time. It is called "chronic renal failure". This type of kidney failure has causes of its own. The treatment for both types of renal failure is roughly the same, with dialysis and kidney transplant being the most common treatments.

One of the most common causes of acute kidney failure, also called acute renal failure, is the sudden loss of blood flow to the kidneys such as seen in trauma, surgery, septic shock, heavy bleeding, burns or acute dehydration. Infections can cause kidney failure, especially if they cause the kidneys to be infected as well. More rarely, acute tubular necrosis can cause the disease.

Sudden blockage of the kidneys can result in acute kidney failure as does auto immune diseases and diseases that clot the small blood vessels of the kidneys. Some of these conditions include having a transfusion reaction, having malignant high blood pressure (extremely high blood pressure), scleroderma or bleeding disorders of pregnancy like an abrupted placenta or a placenta previa.

Symptoms of acute kidney failure are many. The most common symptoms are a stoppage or slowing down of urine production, swelling of the ankles and legs, fluid retention elsewhere in the body, decreased sensation of the hands or feet, change in mental status, high blood pressure or nausea/vomiting.

Chronic kidney failure affects the kidneys more slowly but results in many of the same problems with the kidneys. In fact, it can occur over several years. While there may be no symptoms in the beginning, eventually the disease is as symptomatic as acute renal failure. Symptoms occur when the kidney function is less than 10% of normal.

Chronic kidney failure occurs in 2 out of a thousand individuals in the US. The most common causes of the disease are diabetes and high blood pressure. These two diseases account for 65% of the cases of chronic kidney failure. Other diseases are more unusual and include glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, and conditions where blockage or back flow of the urine occurs on a regular basis. Kidney stones and recurrent infections can affect the condition as well as recurrent infections in the kidney.

Symptoms of chronic kidney failure include weight loss, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, headache, frequent hiccups and generalized itching. Eventually the symptoms are similar to acute kidney failure and one can see poor urine output, nighttime urination, easy bruising, decreased alertness (with drowsiness, lethargy, confusion or delirium), seizures, muscle twitching, poor sensation of the hands or feet and high blood pressure.

Both chronic and acute kidney failure result in the build up of fluid and waste products inside the body so that there is a buildup of nitrogen wastes in the body as well as other waste products. Almost all body systems are affected by kidney failure. <bio> http://www.kidneydirect.com/kidneyfailure.html brings you the latest news on kidney failure.
Kidney disease in older cats is especially worrisome. It is also known as chronic renal failure and is a common problem in older cats. It is seen in cats of all ages, but mostly older cats.

Symptoms of Kidney Disease in Cats

• Your cat is drinking much more water than usual • Your cat is urinating much more than usual

These will be the most noticeable symptoms for you and your cat. When the kidney is not functioning properly, it can't concentrate your cat's urine. However, your veterinarian will probably conduct some blood tests just to rule out any other illness, as this can be a sign of another illness.

Unfortunately, the symptoms don't usually become apparent until about three quarters of the kidney is already in failure. Just as unfortunate is the fact that kidney disease (chronic renal failure) in cats has no cure or way of reversing the damage. The disease will continue, but there are ways you can make your cat more comfortable in the years she has left.

Treatment can include the following --

1. Diet: You might hear or read things that suggest certain special diets for your cat. However, the most important thing is that your cat is eating. If your cat doesn't like the diet and refuses to eat the food, it doesn't do much good. Feed your cat the foods she likes to eat, staying with nutritional, healthy foods. Don't feed your cat just dry food. They will need the moisture from other foods to help keep them hydrated.

2. Nutrition: Your veterinarian might suggest a special food called Renafood, which can help better your cat's kidney function. You might need to crush it into your cat's regular food, but most cats actually like it.

3. Supplemental Fluids: Your veterinarian can give your cat supplemental fluids at their office or teach you how to do it at home. This is one of the best ways to keep your cat hydrated.

There are many ways to help you help your cat live out a happier and healthier life and the most important part of that is keeping them hydrated. Your cat's kidneys can no longer keep the water because of the damage that is already there and it can't be reversed. Ask your veterinarian what else you can do to keep her hydrated, because this will in turn keep her more comfortable. Your vet might suggest some homeopathy, herbs, flower essences and/or acupuncture to help make your cat feel better.

Your vet may also suggest some medicines to help. There are some that can help, just make sure you have all of the information on them (including side effects) in case you find your cat may have some unwanted effects from them. <bio>For more information on pet health visit http://natureshealthypet.com </bio>

For the average person, getting a kidney infection is relatively uncommon. There are some conditions, however, that can lead to kidney infections. The medical term for this kind of infection is called pyelonephritis. It can lead to kidney failure and also to spread of infection from the kidneys to the bloodstream, leading to a dangerous case of gram negative sepsis, which can be fatal in the elderly.

Kidney stones can be a cause of chronic or recurrent kidney infection. Stones are foreign bodies inside the "pelvis" or urinary side of the kidney and can allow bacteria to seed onto them. The kidney stones then become a reservoir for bacteria, leading to recurrent infection.

Prostate disease can cause kidney infection. When the prostate is enlarged or inflamed, it can result in a back up of urine from the bladder all the way up to the kidneys. This can trap bacteria in the urinary tract and can lead to both bladder and kidney infections. These can be very dangerous because prostate enlargement is most common in elderly men who often do not fight off infection well. The mortality rate from kidney infections is higher in the elderly than they are in young people.

Any kind of narrowing or blockage further down the urinary tract can cause kidney infection. Children can be born with abnormal ureters that cause them to develop kidney infections at a very early age. Only through X-Rays involving dye can the blockage be found and repaired. Anytime a child gets frequent bladder or kidney infections, especially boys in which infections are rare, an X-Ray should be done to determine whether or not the child is born with an abnormally placed ureters or ureters.

Women in pregnancy are prone to kidney infection. They often present with blood in the urine and extreme pain on the side where the infected kidney is. This can cause irritability of the uterus and preterm labor.

Most kidney infection problems occur when bacteria come up from the outside through the bladder and up inside the ureters. In rarer cases, however, the individual can have infection first in the bloodstream, a condition called gram negative sepsis. Because the kidney filters blood, it can collect bacteria and cause infection in the kidneys themselves.

The signs and symptoms of a kidney infection are often unmistakable. The individual experiences a fever with flank pain on the side where the kidney is infected. They also have bacteria, blood and sometimes kidney cells showing up in the urinalysis. This is a very painful infection and must be treated aggressively.

The primary cause of a kidney infection is that of bacteria called Gram negative bacteria. They are the type of bacteria found in the stool and because of the proximity of the rectum and the urethra, bacteria from the stool can come up through the urethra, into the bladder and up through the ureters to the kidneys. <bio> http://www.kidneydirect.com/kidneyinfection.html brings you the latest news on kidney infection.
Your veterinarian has just told you that your beloved pet is experiencing kidney failure. What does that mean for your dog and for you as a pet owner as you care for him? Kidney failure means that the kidneys are not functioning properly and are unable to remove waste products from the blood in the body. This does not mean that your pet is unable to produce urine, which is a common misconception. In fact, a dog that has failing kidneys might be producing large amounts of urine, but the body's wastes are not effectively eliminated.

The kidney's primary function in the body is to help to maintain and regulate chemicals in the blood, and is a filtering system for waste products that come through the dog's urine. When the kidneys are not working as they should, the toxins in the blood will not be filtered out. As a result, your dog's survival is threatened by the buildup of toxins and waste in his system.

The size of your dog may give you an idea of when your pet may experience kidney difficulties. Large dogs may begin to have symptoms as early as seven years of age, whereas smaller dogs don't normally experience them until between 10-14 years of age. There are naturally exceptions where dogs much younger than these ages may be affected. It can be a normal part of aging, though, so it is important to watch for signs that your pet is uncomfortable.

What symptoms would you see if your pet has kidney failure or is in the early stages? Your dog may have blood in his urine, be drinking more water than usual (dehydration), vomiting, have loss of appetite, be more lethargic than usual, experience diarrhea, have a stiff gait when he walks, or you may see the condition of his coat diminish. Urination can be a symptom too, but for every dog it is different. They may urinate more than usual, less than usual, or you may see a complete lack of urination.

If you suspect your dog is experiencing kidney failure, take him to the veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment. There are two phases of treatment.

The first phase is meant to kick start the kidneys. Large quantities of fluids are fed to your dog intravenously. At the same time, electrolyte replacement, primarily potassium, is taking place. One of three things will happen after this first phase: 1) The kidneys will function again and continue to do so for a varied amount of time, from weeks to years. 2) The kidneys will function during the treatment, but not after. 3) The kidneys will not function at all.

The second phase of treatment may include a special diet, fluids given at home, and medications. There are even a few veterinary medical sites who offer kidney dialysis for dogs.

Many veterinarians will tell you that your dog could respond well to treatment and could live up to four more years with the proper treatment, and of course, a great big dose of love from you. <bio>Joann Henry operates "Doggie Health Care" http://www.DoggieHealthCare.com, a blog all about our pooches health.
Each year, in the United States, thousands of men and women are diagnosed with kidney cancer. Kidney cancer, like many other forms of cancer, can be fatal, but it does not always have to be. If you are able to receive an effective course of treatment, you may able to live the rest of your life, cancer free. However, it is extremely important that you receive treatment in a timely matter.

The early treatment of kidney cancer relies on the early detection. While your physician should be able to make the official diagnosis, you are advised to be on the lookout for common kidney cancer symptoms. When understanding kidney cancer and its symptoms, it is important to remember that you may not display all of the symptoms; however, that does not mean that you do not have kidney cancer. In the event that you display any of the kidney cancer symptoms, mentioned below, it is advised that you seek medical assistance immediately.

Abnormal colored urine is urine that is discolored. This discoloration is different than the traditional color, which should be a yellow color. Many individuals will be able to notice a chance in their urine color, but that is only if the change has not already occurred. If you feel that the change has already occurred and gone unnoticed, you are advised to be on the lookout for urine that is dark, cloudy, or mixed with blood. In fact, bloody urine is also another one of the many kidney cancer symptoms.

Rapid weight loss is also considered a kidney cancer symptom. With kidney cancer, this weight loss often results in a reduction of body mass up to five percent. It is important to note as to whether or not your eating habits or exercise patterns have changed. Often times, the weight loss associated with kidney cancer is sometimes confused with intentional weight loss.

Flank pain is another one of the many kidney cancer symptoms that you may display, if you have kidney cancer. Flank pain is also commonly referred to as side pain. In many cases, this pain is often unbearable to handle, even if the pain does not occur on a regular basis. This pain, even though it may not result from kidney cancer, often signifies some sort of kidney trouble. In addition to flank pain, abdominal pain and bank pain are both considered kidney cancer symptoms.

Weight loss, bloody urine, abnormal colored urine, and back, flank, and abdominal pains are known as the most common symptoms of kidney cancer. Although they are the most well known, they are not the only symptoms that you should look for. Additional symptoms include paleness, constipation, and excessive hair growth, especially in females. Although you should be on the lookout for these symptoms, you may have a difficult distinguishing whether or not your symptoms are signs of kidney cancer. This is because many of these symptoms are often referred to as common symptoms, meaning they are present among a number of health related illnesses.

All of the above mentioned kidney cancer symptoms, whether they result in a diagnosis of kidney cancer or not, are serious health issues. These serious health issues should be disused with a healthcare professional, such as your primary care physician. Since a number of the above mentioned kidney cancer symptoms can be difficult or impossible for a physician to detect on their own, it is up to you to take responsibility for your health. Whether you know for sure or not, as to whether or not you display the symptoms of kidney cancer, it is still advised that you seek medical assistance. The only harm will come from not getting it. <bio>Kidney failure and http://www.healthline.com/channel/kidney-cancer.html are difficult to treat but easy to diagnose in most cases.
When it comes to cancer, many individuals automatically think of lung cancer or breast cancer. Although lung cancer and breast cancer are the most commonly diagnosed types of cancer, they are not the only types of cancer that you need to be concerned with. In fact, you should also be concerned with kidney cancer. Kidney cancer, like many other forms of cancer, comes in a number of different forms. One of the most commonly diagnosed forms includes renal cell carcinoma.

With Renal cell carcinoma cancer, as well as many other forms of cancer, diagnosis is the key. Without being diagnosed, many individuals are unaware that they even have kidney cancer. Kidney cancer, if diagnosed in the early stages, is treatable. However, to be treated in the early stages detection is important. The best way to prevent yourself from developing a fatal case of kidney cancer is to familiarize yourself with kidney cancer symptoms.

Common kidney symptoms include unusual colored urine, bloody urine, weight loss, a swelled abdomen, and abdominal, back, and flank pain. In the event that you display any of these kidney cancer symptoms, especially a combination of symptoms, you are advised to contact your healthcare professional immediately. Once your physician is aware of your symptom displays, it is likely that he or she will order a wide variety of different tests. These tests may include, but are not always limited to, a CBC, urine tests, a SGTP, liver tests, and kidney x-rays. Once a diagnosis has been made, you and your physician should work together to decide on the next course of action.

Knowing the above mentioned kidney cancer symptoms is one of the best ways to treat and diagnose kidney cancer, including renal cell carcinoma; however, it is not always enough. In addition to familiarizing yourself and keeping yourself up-to-date on common kidney cancer symptoms, you are advised to keep a close eye on your body and your overall health. The above mentioned symptoms make it possible to know what to look for, but it is important that you look.

One of the many reasons why it is important to not only know the most common kidney cancer symptoms, but also apply them to your body and your health, is because not all healthcare professionals will do it for you. Each year, in the Untied States, thousands of cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed. While that number may seem high, it is only a small percentage of the population. For that reason, many healthcare professionals will not consider kidney disease without your urging. Therefore, you will need to on the lookout for the display of symptoms.

When it comes to seeking professional assistance, from a healthcare professional, there are many individuals who do not. This is because many are actually unsure as to whether or not they are displaying the symptoms of kidney cancer. Many kidney cancer symptoms are also symptoms caused by other health problems. Whether you feel that you have kidney cancer or not, it is still advised that you seek professional assistance. As previously mentioned, abnormal urine colors, bloody urine, and abdominal swelling are all common kidney cancer symptoms. Whether or not you have kidney cancer, these are serious health issues that need to be addressed.

At the current moment, there is no exact cause for kidney cancer; although there has been a connection made between smoking and cancer. There is also the increased risk of kidney cancer if one or more of your family members have been diagnosed with it. Although it is always important to be on the lookout for the above mentioned kidney cancer symptoms, you should be even more cautious is you are at an elevated risk for developing this disease. <bio>Very few people show http://www.healthline.com/channel/kidney-cancer.html, that's why it is important to get checked at regular intervals to see if your kidneys are properly functioning.
Having a kidney transplant is often the last ditch effort to save the life of an individual whose kidneys have failed and no longer process waste products in the body. Statistics reveal that a total of about 9,000 kidney transplants occur every year from cadavers and about 3,000 transplants occur from living related donors. Living unrelated donors account for 9,000 transplants per year. Sadly, there are more than 56,000 individuals waiting for kidney transplants at any given period of time.

The first successful kidney transplant was done in 1954 in both Boston and Paris. These were kidney transplants done between identical twins which don't have problems with rejection. The biggest problem was tissue typing--finding a suitable match for the recipient and making sure that rejection is kept to a minimum. This is why many donors are relatives who are a good match or living donors who are a good tissue typing match for the recipient.

Living donors are carefully evaluated to make sure they are medically and psychologically able to donate their kidneys for kidney transplant. The living donor transplant used to be done via an open procedure but it is now increasingly done through laparoscopic surgery, which is easier to tolerate. Kidneys from living donors have a better success rate than do kidneys from deceased donors.

Kidney transplant from deceased donors can come from those whose hearts are still beating but are brain dead, as well as from non-heartbeating donors. The kidney can survive on ice for several hours before transplant so that technically, a person can be deceased and still donate their kidneys. The kidney is then kept in a cold solution prior to donation. The best organs for kidney transplant come from the brain dead donors.

Doctors judge compatibility for kidney transplant by assessing the ABO blood type of the donor and recipient as well as the HLA and minor antigens. If many of these match, the risk of rejecting the transplant and further dialysis is much decreased. In addition, immunosuppressants are used to keep the immune system in check. In the US, only about 17% of transplants have no HLA mismatch whatsoever. This improves the success rate remarkably.

Because kidneys can be kept cold for several hours, the kidney transplant is usually done in a different place from where it was harvested. In addition, the kidney is also placed in a different place from where a normal kidney would be. The most common spot for kidney transplant is the iliac fossa in the lower abdomen. The blood supply must come from somewhere other than the renal artery.

In situations where the kidney transplant recipient is a diabetic, the pancreas is also sometimes transplanted at the same time in order to turn around some of the diabetes the individual has. This almost always requires a deceased donor although partial pancreas transplants in living donors has been done. The patient can also receive a kidney transplant first, followed by a pancreas transplant at a later date. <bio>http://www.kidneydirect.com/kidneytransplant.html brings you the latest news on kidney transplants.
Kidney stones are one of the more painful kidney diseases known. If you've ever had a symptom of kidney stones, you'll never forget what it feels like. Both men and women can get kidney stones but it appears there is a slight predominance of men. In fact, the typical individual with a kidney stone is a white male between the ages of twenty to sixty with a positive family or personal history of stones before. About 60% of all of those with stones that have calcium in them will get a second stone within 10 years.

Before an individual even develops a symptom of kidney stones, the kidneys are busy forming those stones. The conditions that favor the development of kidney stones are low blood volume, low fluid intake and an excess of a molecule that precipitates out in the urine. The substances that make up kidney stones are primarily calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate or uric acid stones. They pass through the kidney and end up in the urinary side of the kidney, in an area called the renal pelvis. It is there that the stones precipitate out into hard stone-like globules.

One doesn't get a symptom of kidney stones very often if the stone is big enough to remain inside the renal pelvis. It can get caught on parts of the kidney and can just get bigger. In fact, one of the few symptoms of kidney stones that remain in the pelvis of the kidney is the presence of recurrent kidney or bladder infections. This is because bacteria are incorporated within the stone and the stone acts as a reservoir for bacteria.

The primary symptom of kidney stones is extreme pain in the side or flank. The pain often radiates to the groin area and is so painful, it is likened to the pain of childbirth. When someone has such a symptom, it is important to consider doing a plain X-Ray of the kidney and ureter area to see if any kind of calcified nodule can be seen. This represents the stone itself and it is usually found stuck in the ureter. The other test that is sometimes done is a dye study using X-Rays. This test checks for the presence of a blockage in the ureters or decreased flow past the ureters.

Another symptom of kidney stones can be nausea, vomiting and sometimes a fever. If the stone causes an infection in the kidneys, the urinalysis can show infection cells in the urine. Even in the absence of infection, red blood cells will often show up in the urine sample.

When someone has a symptom of kidney stones and evidence of stones on X-Ray or urinalysis, the treatment is generally supportive. The individual is given pain medication, antibiotics and is sometimes told to strain their urine for the presence of the stone. The person also needs to drink a lot of fluids to help push the stone past the point of the ureters and into the bladder.

In some cases, the symptom of kidney stones is so severe that hospitalization is necessary. The person may need to have the stone broken up by means of shock waves used by ultrasonic machines. In rare cases, the individual has a huge kidney stone that can only be managed by surgical removal. After treatment, the person will need to keep their fluid intake up and may need to take medications to reduce the further incidence of stones. <bio>http://www.kidneydirect.com/symptomofkidneystones.html brings you the latest news on kidney stone symptoms.
One of the causes of gout that many people fail to consider is impaired kidney health. If you're trying to manage kidney problems, you're at a greater risk of hyperuricemia, and are therefore more prone to experiencing gout attacks.

The reason for this is if the kidneys are not functioning at their best, they struggle to process and remove excess uric acid from the body, allowing it to build up in the bloodstream and ultimately crystallize in the joints.

The people most likely to suffer from gout as a result of a kidney disorder are those who have adult polycystic kidney disease, the most commonly inherited form of kidney disease. Symptoms include pain in the back, kidney area or lower sides, headaches, UTI's and blood in the urine.

If you believe you might have any form of kidney disease it is important to see your doctor right away. You will also want to educate yourself as to the many ways in which your life will be affected and which treatments will best suit your needs. You will need to understand the relationship between your kidney disease and your gout in order to treat it properly.

Similarly, it seems that gout can also increase the risk of experiencing kidney stones. Between 10 and 40 percent of gout patients will experience kidney stones at any one time after they have developed hyperuricemia. Though the stones will typically be composed of uric acid, they may also include other materials too like calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate, or additional substances combined with uric acid.

If you're suffering from kidney stones you can probably expect to experience one or all of the following symptoms; acute pain in the lower back/side, groin or abdomen, nausea, vomiting, blood in the urine and sometimes fever or chills.

However, the good news is that there are steps you can take to improve the health of your kidneys, therefore avoiding the development or kidney stones, while minimizing the chances of a gout attack at the same time. For example, adopting healthy lifestyle choices in terms of exercise and diet will increase your resistance to all of these problems.

Uric acid build up can also cause more severe problems for the kidneys; chronic uric acid interstitial nephropathy (kidney damage) occurs when there is a build-up of uric acid crystals to the point that they block the exit of fluids from the kidney. However, when properly managed, this condition can be reversible in many cases. Also a sudden increase in excess uric acid can lead to full kidney failure, however this is very rare.

To keep kidney's healthy and avoid gout flare ups treatment may include simple steps such as changing some of your dietary choices, but may also include more specific therapies like the use of vitamin C, which is becoming increasingly recognized for its abilities to lower uric acid levels in the body. It's also important to make sure you drink sufficient amounts of water to keep your body well hydrated at all times as this helps to dilute uric acid levels and gives the kidney's a helping hand in flushing out the unwanted uric acid.

The decision for the treatments you'll be using will be directly related to the causes of gout that are influencing your attacks. Get to know your body so that you'll be able to make informed decisions along with your doctor. Be sure to ask questions and educate yourself for the best possible treatment.<bio>Grab your free copy of Lisa McDowell's brand new Gout Newsletter - Overflowing with easy to implement methods to help you discover more about the causes of goutCurrently over 20,000 fellow gout sufferers are members of Lisa's newsletter, why not join them and discover how gout disease can be treated effectively without expensive medication.</bio>

In the worst case scenario, an individual will need to be on dialysis or receive a kidney transplant to replace the diseased kidneys.

There are several different types of kidney disease, some of which are worse than others. Kidney disease can be "acute", meaning it is of a fast onset or "chronic" meaning the decline in kidney function is slow. Both kinds of kidney disease can be due to autoimmune disorders, toxins, medications or infections. Diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure can gradually worsen the function of the kidneys.

Another classification of kidney disease occurs when the kidneys leak out certain body fluids or substances. One of these diseases is hematuria or blood in the urine. This can come from sickened kidneys that leak out blood cells from the capillaries in the kidneys. The other is fairly common and is called proteinuria. Proteinuria is when protein, mostly albumin, leaks out from the body. This can become so great that there is not enough protein in the blood of the rest of the body. We need our protein to keep the fluid in the blood vessels and without it, fluid leaks out into the tissues all over the body. This condition is known as "nephrotic syndrome".

The presence of kidney stones is another kidney disease. This can occur when a person secretes too much calcium oxalate into the urine and doesn't drink enough water. Uric acid can cause kidney stones as well. The calcium oxalate or the uric acid builds up in the urinary area of the kidneys and precipitates into a stone that, if passed, becomes very painful. Kidney stones do not fit well in the ureters and they get stuck, causing a back of urine and extreme pain. Infections can occur with kidney stones as well.

Hypertension can cause kidney disease or, in some cases, the medications that treat hypertension (high blood pressure) can cause kidney problems. In some cases, a person has a blockage of one or both arteries leading to the kidneys. The kidneys respond by releasing vasopressin which causes the blood pressure to rise remarkably. There are specific blood pressure medications that address this problem. In some cases, surgery to correct the blockage may need to be done.

Chronic pyelonephritis is another kidney disease. This is a condition where infection seeds into the kidneys (one or both) and causes chronic pain and inflammation in the kidneys. Hematuria can result from this type of kidney infection.

There is one primary kidney disease which is cancerous. Renal cell carcinoma is a type of kidney disease that can occur spontaneously. The cancer can cause pain or bleeding in the area of the kidneys. A CT scan of the abdomen can detect this form of kidney disease. Often, if the cancer doesn't extend beyond the outer capsule of the kidney, the kidney can be removed and the cancer is highly treatable.

Kidney disease can be hereditary. There are a number of rare hereditary kidney diseases that result in leakage of blood or protein from the kidneys. These diseases can sometimes be managed medically but, in other cases, dialysis or kidney transplant are necessary to cure the underlying problem. <bio> http://www.kidneydirect.com/kidneydisease.html brings you the latest news on kidney disease.
Often a laparoscope will be used to perform kidney surgery on a patient as it is thought to cause them less shorten and shortens the time it takes for them to recover (although this may not be true for people who have kidney cancer).

A laparoscopy allows the surgeon to perform an operation by inserting a device with a camera attached through a small opening in the patients body. Research has been carried out at 4 different hospitals around the world to compare laparoscopy surgery against the usual "open surgery" for people diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. According to a study in the Journal of Urology the two procedures produced the same results.

It was find that those patients who had their kidney cancer removed using a laparoscope usually did better than those who had open surgery. It was found that they loss less blood, spent less time in hospital and so were out of work for less time as well.

Unfortunately, although this procedure may be better for the patient they are much more complex and time consuming for the doctor. In fact it can take doctor's many years to decide whether a new treatment will achieve the same results as the more standard types of surgery available and that have been performed for many years.

In a study carried out by Dr Andrew J Portis and his colleagues on 133 patients suffering from kidney cancer and who had surgery (entire kidney tumor was removed along with any remaining normal kidney) to January 1996 he found that the 64 who were treated using the laparoscopic technique loss less blood, spent less time in hospital but it took the surgeons longer to do the operation. The other 69 patients were treated using open surgery.

Also it was found that there was not difference in the number of patients that survived in the two groups and they both had the same rate of local recurrence of the cancer that they were suffering from.

When looking at the results of the study they based them on four standards so had four ways in which to compare the two procedures against each other.

In fact the evidence shows that the patients whose kidney cancer was removed by use of the laparoscope method did just as well as those who had been treated using open surgery.

Certainly things may well improve with this kind of kidney surgery as the doctors learn more about how to use the equipment correctly and so their skills improve. <bio>Lee Dobbins writes for http://surgery.health-g8way.com where you can find out more basic information on different types of surgery including more about kidney surgery. </bio>

If you are having some health troubles, you might want to consider if you are suffering from symptoms of kidney stones. Developing kidney stones is a very common occurrence these days. A kidney stone is a stone-like, hard mass that could form in either or both of your kidneys. Most times a person will have the stones without experiencing any symptoms of kidney stones. However, as they begin to travel to the bladder from the kidneys, one will likely begin to experience some severe pain.

Additionally, as they travel you might experience a block in urine flow or even bleeding, which can really bring on the onset of symptoms of kidney stones. What happens when kidney stones form is that the kidney's function is to clean the blood filtering out waste products and water, which produces urine. However, the urine contains crystals which can form kidney stones. Generally, a person never notices these crystals, unless it becomes so large that it blocks the urine flow out kidneys and body. If this occurs, you will then begin to feel the symptoms of kidney stones.

Symptoms of kidney stones include fever, chills, and a burning like sensation while urinating. You may also experience the urge to urinate frequently, vomiting, and nausea. Your urine might be smelly, cloudy, or bloody, as well as experiencing extensive pain in the groin, rib, or back areas.

Of course these symptoms of kidney stones can also signify instances of a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) or cystitis, which are generally more common in people than suffering from a kidney stone.

To determine the cause of symptoms of kidney stones your doctor will like do a series of test to identify the stones, determine the location, identity, and size of the stones. These test will likely include blood tests to test for the presense of chemicals, urine analysis looking for the chemicals, xrays to view the stones, an IVU (Intravenous Urogram) which is a special x-ray to view the stones when normal x-rays are not enough, or an ultrasound.

If you are found to have kidney stones, the treatment recommended will depend one the cause and type of the stones. In most cases, surgery is not needed, your doctor will have you drink lots of water, as well as exercise to pass the stone. If the stone cannot pass, infection, blockage, or kidney damage occurs, surgery will likely be necessary.

You can work to avoid kidney stones and symptoms of kidney stones by drinking plenty of water daily, avoiding excess levels of calcium such as those found in green leafy vegetables or dairy products. You should also watch your intake of poultry, fish, and meat, which could lead to instances of uric acid kidney stones. <bio>Sarah Miles is a writer with a background in healthcare and provides articles for numerous websites and publications.
Is there a natural remedy for kidney stones?

If you are looking for a natural remedy for kidney stones for either for yourself or for your loved ones instead of the conventional methods, you shouldn't have a difficulty finding it as more and more people are inclined to more natural and healthier solutions. This results to a more and more stores carrying natural and alternative medicines.

Your local health food stores should have different types of alternative medicines including a natural remedy for kidney stones. Also, there are many diet changes you can consider in order to prevent kidney stones.

As you know, kidney stones are not a joke. They are very painful because it blocks the urine flow as the stone passes. This causes the stretching of the urethras and kidney. This can take weeks and worse sometimes months or longer along with the pain coming in periodic waves. The size of a kidney stone varies. It can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball.

One obvious but often disregarded as a natural remedy for kidney stones is to increase your fluid intake. Eating a low protein diet is another healthy alternative for kidney stone problems. This is because protein increases the levels of uric acid and calcium in the urine.

Also try eating less meat. It has been shown that people who are inclined to eat more vegetables are not prone to kidney stones. Another good idea is to avoid eating large meals especially late at night. What happens is that these foods tend to promote crystal-forming concentrations. Avoid sugars, salts, caffeine, and alcohol. Believe it or not but they increases the amount of calcium in your urine.

You can also increase your vitamin C intake and make sure you consume foods rich with all these necessary minerals such as magnesium. Magnesium is an important component in our body and can be found in foods such as corn, potatoes, bananas as well as oats, bran, brown rice, barley, bran, buckwheat, and rye. <bio>Rose Antonio has two sites: http://www.green-tea-expert.com as well as http://www.theteaavenue.com/.
Bayer's Trasylol problems are growing following increasing reports of the drug's side effects. Trasylol has recently been linked to a higher risk of kidney damage, heart attack, and death in the five years following a patient undergoing bypass heart surgery. In 1993 Trasylol (Aprotinin) was approved by the Federal Drug Administration. Aprotinin is manufactured by Bayer under the brand name Trasylol. Over the past several years Trasylol sales continued to increase even though studies indicated serious Trasylol kidney damage side effects.

Most heart surgery patients don't know if they were given Trasylol during their open heart surgery. Many patients suffering from Trasylol kidney damage side effects don't know if they were given Trasylol during their surgery because the surgeon made the decision whether to administer the drug to stop excessive bleeding during surgery.

Trasylol affects the way in which blood clots. It is given to open heart surgery patients to prevent excessive bleeding side effects. Trasylol is mainly used during repeat coronary artery bypass surgery to reduce the amount of bleeding both during and after surgery. The drug has been in use for 13 years and a million patients have received it. One of the most serious complications for bypass surgery patients is excessive bleeding. Clotting medications such as Trasylol reduce the amount of blood transfusion needed during surgery. In 2006 The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) published a study that reported Trasylol problems with an increased risk of developing heart failure, kidney damage, myocardial infarction, and stroke in bypass heart surgery patients.

On September 21, 2006 the FDA's Cardiovascular and Renal Drug Advisory Committee met to evaluate current data regarding Trasylol side effects. On September 29, 2006, the FDA issued a public health advisory stating that it had new information that Bayer failed to disclose an earlier study that it had conducted involving 67,000 heart surgery patients. Preliminary review of this study suggested that Trasylol side effects included higher risks for stroke, congestive heart failure, kidney damage, and death. Bayer failed to disclose this study during the Advisory Committee on September 21, 2006.

Dr. Dennis Mangano, the lead author of the NEJM Trasylol side effects study, has noted that Trasylol problems occurred more frequently than those linked with the drug Vioxx. Dr. Mangano relates, "In fact our findings raise even more troubling concerns, for:

(1) aprotinin has been on the market for three times as long as Vioxx, yet few comprehensive safety studies have been conducted since approval;

(2) the life-threatening complications with aprotinin found here occurred far more frequently than those with Vioxx; and

(3) far less expensive generic alternatives to aprotinin which are equally effective in limiting bleeding have been available, but have been underused."

The observational study concluded, "Our findings raise serious concerns regarding the safety of an approved drug intended to limit blood loss in at-risk patients undergoing surgery." Mangano related his opinion regarding the ongoing use of Trasylol, stating "In good conscience, I could not administer (Trasylol) to this group of patients, especially given the availability of safer alternatives." Trasylol problems continue to be studied and the FDA is monitoring Trasylol kidney damage side effects and advising physicians to consider limiting the drug's use. <bio>Steve Fields http://www.injurygroup.com </bio>

If you have already suffered from the effects of a kidney stone, you will be well aware of how painful it can be.

But what is a kidney stone =96 and how does it form?

Firstly, what do our kidneys do?

Your kidneys are bean-shaped organs, each about the size of a small fist, located near the middle of your back, just below the rib cage. They act as very efficient trash collectors. Your kidneys process around 200 quarts of blood each day and sift out about 2 quarts of waste products and extra water. This waste and extra water become urine, which flows to your bladder through tubes called ureters. Your bladder stores urine until you go to the bathroom where you excrete it through your urethra.

The wastes cleaned from your blood by your kidneys come from the normal breakdown of active muscle movement and from the food you eat. Your body uses the food for energy and self-repair. After your body has taken what it needs from the food for energy and self-repair, the waste products are sent to the blood. If these wastes were not removed by your kidneys, the wastes would build up in the blood and begin to seriously damage your body. Other functions of your kidneys include helping to control blood pressure and to make red blood cells.

What then is a Kidney Stone?

It is a solid piece of material that may form in the kidney from waste substances in the urine.

A kidney stone, once formed, may stay in the kidney or travel down the urinary tract. A small kidney stone may pass all of the way out of the body causing very little pain, or even no pain at all.

A larger stone may become stuck in a ureter, in the bladder, or in the urethra[which is the tube leading from the bladder which allows you to urinate]. A problem kidney stone can block the flow of urine and cause great pain.

The four major types of kidney stones:

=95the most common type of kidney stone contains calcium. While calcium is a normal, and very necessary, part of a healthy diet the calcium that is not used by the bones and muscles goes as a waste product to the kidneys. Most of the time, the kidneys flush out this extra calcium in the urine. However at times, some calcium remains in the kidneys and eventually joins with other waste products to form a stone;

=95struvite stones may form after an infection in the urinary system. These stones contain the mineral magnesium, which may have come from your diet, and the waste product ammonia which has resulted from your body processes;

=95uric acid stones may result if there is too much acid in your urine. If you tend to form uric acid stones, you may need to reduce the amount of meat you eat;

=95cystine stones are rare. Cystine is one of the building blocks that make up muscles, nerves, and other parts of the body. Cystine can build up in the urine to form a stone. The disease that causes cystine kidney stones is genetically based, that is, it runs in families. <bio>John Vanse has an integrated network of health related websites.
