Of course in a camp with no fence the animals you have come to see, do come into the camp especially at night. Close encounters with an elephant browsing three feet from your tent is what a camping Kenya safari is all about.

As a family our first experience of an in Kenya safari was at the famous Galdessa Camp in Tsavo East. With two small children and apprehensive parents we felt that a fixed camp was going to be about as close to the wilderness as we could cope with, and so in the purest sense of the word it wasn't a camping Kenya safari, but Galdessa is a camp with no fences or walls. The `tents' were thatched bandas and a great deal more civilized than we expected with electricity, running water, and comfortable beds. Most important of all we were sealed in, zipped up at night with good well fitting mosquito nets.

On he way to Galdessa, and by the way we had our own family vehicle and driver arranged hrough the Manager at Hemingways. He wisely said that for our first in Kenya Safari it was the best way, because we could stop when we wanted and view as long as we wanted, and how right he was.

The few vehicles we saw were mainly like mini buses crammed with tourists, which looked no fun at all.

He aso said that if a luxury african safari was our ideal, then to start at Galdessa would be best, and how right he was again.

On our six hour drive from Malindi we had already seen several giraffes, elephants, but several hundred yards away, a lioness looking for her cubs, and a whole variety of bambi like creatures, water buffalo, and then very close to Galdessa two very large bull elephants, one of whom we passed at about fifteen yards, and exciting that was too.

We hardly passed a vehicle, and whilst our journey was just before the long rains arrived in April, the weather was clear and warm. The rains howver came a few days later, and even overnight this was seen by a considerable rise in the water level in the river due to rain up country.

We duly arrived at Galdess for our first night ever on a Kenya safari, nd were led to our banda, being shown on the way, elephant tracks, lion footprints, and hippo prints as well, all on the path inside the camp. We were told in no uncertain terms that on a camping kenya safari site like Galdessa, we were not under any circumstances, even in daylight to leave our banda unless we were with a member of staff, because of the high chance of an encounter with an animal.

After dark, we had to get into a safari vehicle to go the the dining area, because there was a bull elephant in the camp, and indeed on returning to our banda later by vehicle the bll elephant was browsing outside our back door, an we crept past about 10 feet away to the safety of our tent.

A visiting hippo in the middle of the night, right next to the tent, and the early morning evidence that a lion had been within touching distance of the tent really made our stay at Galdessa.

The food at lunch and dinner was spectacularly good, the views of the river from the central lounge/dining hut was excellent, and the surprisingly hot shower in our ten all adde to make the first night of our first in Kenya safari a memorable one.

Galdessa is a must on any Kenya safari tour, and a definite stop on a luxury african safari. They are marvellously situated beside waterholes and natural salt licks, there is all day and all night game viewing without leaving the hotel, thanks to the floodlighting. There is even a bell system in the room to waken guests if a good sighting arrives in the hours of darkness!! There is even an underground viewing hide so close to the waterhole, that you could almost reach out and touch.

The great spread of height in the Park means different species in different environments, and up high the moorland is very reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands, butat 10,000 feet the bamboo thickets hide the bongo a rare and elusive forest antelope.

If you have come to see the big five,then elephants dominate the waterholes, and lions hve to give way. Leopards can be sighted there but mostly a night.

The Park also contains large numbers of black rhino.

Aberdare National Park is not a malaria area because of the height, butrecautions must continue to be taken, because you will be coming from or going to spots where Malaria is a real danger.

The Great Rift Valley is really one of the great wonders of the world, and it can be seen as far north as the Middle East, and then this gigantic fault line goes down through Africa as far as Mozambique, a distance of around 5400 miles in length.

It is impossible to describe the sensation when you first see it in Kenya, or do justice to what it feels like when you approach the Great Rift Valley, and the ground just vanishes from under you, as this great Rift opens up, cutting Kenya neatly in half, separating East from West.

In the south the valley walls are sheer cliffs rising to over 6000 feet at Lake Naivasha.

There are three national reserves in the Rift Valley are all in the remote area north of Isiolo and they are the Samburu, Buffalo Spring and Shaba, which are accessible with only a little difficulty.

Something not to be missed are the Lakes area of the Great Rift Valley, and the descent to explore them in the floor of the Rift.

The first is the beautiful deep green Lake Naivasha, and the Lake Naivasha basin hold two small National Parks. The first Park in the area is the Mount Longonot National Park which rises up to over two thousand seven hundred metres around a young volcano.

The next park is Hell's Gate which is famous for natural Hot Geysers, and is relatively small at 68 square kilometres.

Going northwest you come next to Lake Nakaru and its world famous park made to protect the pink lesser flamingo.

This is followed by Lake Bogoria, and the reserve here is almost all lake which has huge interest to ornithologists.

Then finally we come to the tiny Lake Kamnarok Reserve with a 4000 foot deep valley.

As a consequence the amount of wildlife to view has increased enormously, making Nakuru a very worthwhile part of any African safari trip. It is at an altitude of 5700 ft, and covers an area of over 188 sq. Kms.

Its height above sea level alone means that the vegetation and wildlife are considerably different than say at Tsavo which is mainly much lower and closer to the sea.

The lake itself is shallow and alkaline, and varies in size from 5 to 30 square kms depending on the time of year. It is the alkaline nature of Lake Nakuru that causes the huge numbers of visitors each year. It is no exaggeration to say that one species more than any other has made the lake famous throughout the world

Lake Nakuru is best known for the huge stunning flocks of lesser Flamingo, and for many this is the highlight of their Kenya safari holiday, but there is far more to see in the Park than just the pink Flamingos.

The differing environments from the lake itself to wooded and bush grassland, to rocky escarpments and ridges means a great diversity of wildlife.

Hippo of course ca be spotted in the lake along with 400 other species o birdlife, and on the shore, waterbuck, zebra, black and white rhinos, buffalo, leopard, lion, Rothschild's giraffe, warthog, to name but a few, plus large python snakes.

The Lake Nakuru National Park is the only completely fenced national park in Kenya, and is easily accessed by tarmac road from Nairobi, and Naisha airstrip during the dry season. It is fenced to keep out poachers and so the protected rhino population is growing.
